Holiday Plans (Monstrous Roommates AU fic)

So the thing is: Fireworks go boom.

There were raised voices in the kitchen, which was surprising. Thomas rose up out of his doze and headed over, more or less sitting on the kitchen pass through. All four of his roommates were gathered around the table, which had lots of pieces of paper on it, and Logan’s laptop to one side.  The paper proved to be a map of the surrounding area, from the looks of things printed off Google and patched together.

“-this does of course, not include people who have just gotten them somewhere and will let them off whenever they please.”

“Yeah but those are quieter.” Virgil countered. Patton whined uncomfortably, leaning against Roman. Roman was perched on the counter, and kissed Patton’s neck in response.

Virgil glared down at the paper. 

“We can’t do anything about those. So planning for them is out.”

“Barring weather conditions they’ll start here at eight forty five on the second, continuing here and here until ten at the latest.” He drew points on the map, and after a moment’s study, Virgil drew circles around them. 

“Again, the weather’ll change it, but that’s about the range.”

Thomas moved past them, and brushed up against Patton and Roman, letting them know he was there with a chill.

“Hello Thomas.” Roman said brightly, but looking in the wrong direction. 

“Over here.” Thomas corrected, pushing himself to become visible. “Sorry, went through you a little bit.” 

“So that’s what that was.” Patton gave a weak smile. 

“What’s going on?” Thomas asked. Over at the kitchen table, Logan and Virgil had changed pen colors, apparently, and were discussing the third. 

“Fourth of July plans.” Roman explained. 

“Ah, gonna find the best place to watch the fireworks?” 

Before anyone could answer, there was a sharp echoing bang somewhere down the street. Patton jumped and whined, fingernails looking at little dark and thick where he was holding on to Roman’s arms. 

There was a pause, then another bang. Outside there was a flash of light. 

“... firework.” Logan said after a moment. “Not gun.” 

“You’re sure?” Virgil asked. Logan nodded.  Now that he was looking, Logan looked a little strained as well, and Virgil was chewing on the cord to his hoodie. 

“Not quite.” Roman smiled at Thomas. “My beloveds do not care for fireworks. Logan is bothered by the lights, Patton is bothered by the sound, and Virgil hates both of them. Our last home was in the city, and the fireworks usually were set off at the edges, or more lost to the city sounds.”

“And assholes who shot ‘em off early got caught by the police. All cops may be bastards, but at least they knew a fire hazard when they saw it.” Virgil said grumpily. 

“We weren’t quite prepared for how… enthusiastic the area was last year.” Logan explained. “This year, I have made some charts, and Virgil is helping me estimate how far the sound will carry.” He frowned down at his map. “We’re in an overlap for no less than three displays- and four on the fourth itself, oddly enough.” 

“So I’m guessing no barbeque?” Thomas joked. 

“We will probably be leaving tomorrow morning.” Roman confirmed. “I quite like fireworks, but I wouldn’t want to leave them alone.” 

“You don’t have to.” Patton mumbled. “You could stay and have a blast.” he gave a weak smile. 

“Thank you, no.” He kissed the top of Patton’s head. “If I want to see fireworks, I’ll take a trip down to Disney.”

“Disney.” Virgil and Logan groaned together, and Virgil made another mark on the map, down at the edge. 

“I never thought it was an option.” Patton told Thomas. “When I was younger I just had to put up with it, because no one else seemed to have a problem.” 

“If we can’t find a good place, it’s going to be noise canceling headphones and a lan party this year.” Virgil grumbled. “I mean, fun, but I’d rather not be forced into it. But we don’t want to go too far, and we need someplace to stay. So it’s tricky.” he sighed. “I remember I liked the fireworks when I was a kid, but now it’s just too bright and loud.” 

Logan reached out and patted Virgil’s shoulder, staring down at the map. 

“Why don’t you guys go somewhere else entirely?” 

“Well, I’m still concerned about the epidemic, personally.” Logan pointed out. “Of the four of us, I am the most likely to contract a disease. Beyond that…” he shook his head. “It’s not as if we can travel far outside the United States in any good time. So anywhere we went we would be faced with the same problem. I think preparation like this is as good as it’s going to get.” 

“Last year of highschool, Logan and I went camping. We hiked for miles out into the wilderness.” Patton offered. 

“The stars were lovely.” Logan remembered. 

“Yeah, but you were so sore you could hardly walk back.” Patton gave a whine of concern. 

“We perhaps pushed too hard.”

“It took us twice as long to get back.” Patton admitted. “We ran out of food and I had to hunt. So even if we were near a big enough park, I don’t know if I’d wanna risk it.” 

“I should hope I’m in better shape now, with all the effort I put into physical therapy.” Logan huffed. “But I suppose it’s better not to take that risk.”

“I mean, I could probably carry you back, but I’m not a huge fan of camping in the first place.” Virgil said with a grimace.

“It sounds like you need an off highway motel. Most of those are further away from towns.” Thomas suggested. “If you had more time, you might be able to find like an island rental in the keys.”

“I vote that!” Roman said excitedly. “No fireworks for you and a beach for me!” 

“Yeah, sure.” Virgil said sarcastically. “You find one and I’ll put up with being on a boat.” 

Roman pulled out his phone and started typing, and Virgil rolled his eyes, going back to his intense map-marking with Logan. 

“Are you going to be okay Thomas?” Patton asked suddenly. 

“Yeah, I’m used to being alone.” Thomas admitted, flickering a little bit. He didn’t like it, but really, being a ghost lent itself to being lonesome.  From the expression on Patton’s face he felt bad about it. Logan and Virgil argued quietly about locations and populations. 

They were still at it a half an hour later, when Roman’s phone pinged and he looked at it.

“Ah-ha! I’ve got it!” 

“What?” Virgil looked surprised. 

“I put out some feelers- okay, Remy helped, and he and his mind-witch want to come as well.” Roman smiled brilliantly. “We have, should we want it, a private island for the week. With a nice little vacation home.” there was another ping. “Ah-” Roman’s shoulders shook as he laughed looking at the message. “Apparently it’s a summer home of someone Remy knows, and they go north for the Fourth. And it’s no longer optional. Remy says he’s going to show up at our door tomorrow. With a minivan.”

“If Remy’s willing to drive a minivan, it must be serious.” Virgil said with a straight face. 

“Ah well.” Logan looked at the map. “It was a fun mental exercise.”   He began folding up the map, and putting the pens into a cup. 

“We should go pack, I guess.” Virgil rubbed the back of his neck. “Sunscreen time.” 

“I wish you could come with us.” Patton told Thomas.

“Yeah. Me too.” he smiled, and faded out.

Random Sanders Sides Story Ideas

1. Patton is used to repressing his feelings. What he's not used to is repressing his new wolfish tendencies. In which Patton finds out he's a literal Woof Man and tries desperately to hide it from his roommates in increasingly ridiculous ways.

2. Thomas finds himself isekaied into a fantasy world where humans apparently don't exist. The mythical creatures he meets there may be ablento help him get home, if he can just get them to work together. Featuring centaur!Roman, faun!Patton, merfolk!Logan, naga!Janus, harpy!Remus, and drider!Virgil.

3. An AU of the cult classic game Vampire: the Masquerade- Bloodlines. Thomas is an ancient vampire who doesn't like to play a part in the petty clan politics. Over the centuries, he ends up gaining a collective of ghoul underlings who are more like family. Living peacefully becomes hard when the most recent ghoul he takes in, Virgil, becomes caught in the crossfire of a breach in the Masquerade.

4. Remus is a stuntman who's broken every bone in his body and then some. Roman, the leading actor of the movie they're working on, is becoming suspicious if the man is even human. As truths are revealed, the suspenseful horror film starts becoming reality, and Roman refuses to become a victim. Featuring make-up artist Janus, director Patton, script-writer Logan, and cameraman Virgil.

5. Janus, a powerful arch fae, is banished from his grove when his disdain towards humans becomes too great. Believing himself to be superior, Janus dives head first into human society to prove his point. Alternatively, local arch fae gets kicked out of his fairy ring and immediately gets stabbed upon entering human society. It'd be a shame if some humans were to take pity on him and make him experience...emotions. Featuring truth-seekers/monster-hunters Virgil and Remus.

Silly sanders sides au I made up: the kids show au!!! As the name would suggest, the basic premise is the story of Sanders Sides but if it was a tv show for younger kids instead of a webseries for whatever the age demographic for SaSi is supposed to be.

C!Thomas is a child in this one (like eight/nine I’m thinking?) and on his birthday he receives a magic (kind of not really? I’ll get to that) mirror and with it he can travel into his mind and meet his sides! With his creativity, logic, and morals by his side he goes on adventures through his mind fighting imaginary monsters and even other sides. Through these adventures he learns lessons about himself and how to deal with problems in the real world. This au is pretty light hearted compared to the other ones I’ll post about, there are story developments and bad things do happen, but since it’s meant to imitate a kids show it’s a lot more sanitized and everything always works out eventually.

It’s sort of vague whether or not Thomas��� adventures or imaginary or not and if the mirror is actually magic, I think it’s kind of implied it is his imagination? But like in the same way it’s implied the canon sides are imaginary so nobody cares and we all collectively treat them like they’re real

The biggest difference in the characters other than age is our creative side, I picture Thomas’ creativity not have been split, at least not when the story starts. So we have Romulus aka King Creativity (we’ve all accepted that piece of fanon right?) hanging around. I picture at some point there’d be a big fight between him and Patton that results in the split, imagine like a two part special. In the end they’re able to save Romulus (it’s a show for young children afterall) and decide to keep him aswell as Roman and Remus around, so sometimes they’ll be seperate and sometimes they’ll be fused depending on the situation.

All of the sides are kids in this one but not all of them appear the exact same age as Thomas. Logan is the youngest (do yall remember that thing that was going around a while ago about Logan being the youngest when Thomas was a kid cause the logic part of your brain develops later or something idk). The creativity twins are around Thomas’ age but a bit younger. Romulus and Janus are both the same age as Thomas (Janus might be slightly older but just barely). Virgil is older than Thomas, sort of imitating Thomas’ perception of a mean older kid type. And Patton is the oldest (he’s still a kid though).

I haven’t mentioned orange but I will probably add an orange side if I do more with this au, I think he’d be anger. I’m a firm believer in him and Patton being related somehow so they’d probably be siblings in this au. Not sure when that split would happen but that could maybe be after Romulus’ split because Patton feels guilty about what happened. “You can’t get angry anymore! Look what happens when you get angry! You hurt people” or something like that. I think he’d appear the same age as Logan.

The dark sides aren’t really a plot twist here, especially since two of them might just- not exist at the beginning of the story. They do get introduced over time though in probably the same order as in canon. They get redemption/acceptance arcs over time as well.

I had a Sanders Sides x Big Mouth/Human Resources idea that I don’t plan on using for anything but I want to write about it so doing it here. This is more of a Human Resources AU of Sanders Sides because I saw like one episode of Big Mouth.

Obviously Thomas is the human and the Sides are his human resource workers.

Logan is a logic rock, of course.

Remus is a hormone monster obviously.

Virgil could be an anxiety mosquito or a shame wizard but I love the idea of him being a depression cat. Maybe a depression kitty who went to an anxiety mosquito college?

Roman is an ambition gremlin.

Patton fits as a lovebug but I like the idea of him as an empathy owl. Maybe a grief sweater?

Janus as a hateworm makes sense aesthetically but not really with hateworm lore. That man is an addiction angel.

It's been ages since I last posted something on this side blog, but I plan on doing a small refresh on character references later on (and continue the story by how Volume 2 goes down in the AU).

For now, I got a new list of confirmed celebrities in the MH World. Some are already existing in g1 and g3, and some are made up! This series is dedicated to any/all celebrities in the MH World that are parodies of real-life celebrities, so you won't find Casta Fierce or Catty Noir here. Fander Fic Rec Friday (#2) (Tagging these #fander fic rec friday if anyone else wants to join in to share some recs of their own.)

Three Days at Castle Winterburg by Odaigahara Fairytale AU (Intrulogical) Rating: M Logan has lived his entire life without experiencing fear. Never one content to be lacking in knowledge, he sets out on a quest to learn it. His search brings him to the haunted Castle Winterburg, and several bizarre encounters with the malicious entity within. Notes: This is basically an Intrulogical retelling of "The Story of the Youth Who Went Forth to Learn What Fear Was" (but with a much more interesting ending). One of my absolute favorites. The Touch Transcends Language series by IfFoundPleaseReturnToJanus (Bluewic) Fantasy/Modern with Magic (Anxceit) Rating: E Janus is a fae prince taken captive by hunters, Virgil is a hunter on the outs with his peers. Neither speaks the other's language, but when they wind up cornered by a common enemy they have to find some way to communicate in order to survive. Notes: I don't read a lot of smut (nor is romantic Anxceit usually to my tastes), so it speaks to the plot in this "Porn with Plot" that it managed to reel me in. A story about two individuals navigating an intense infatuation when they can't speak the other's language was pretty unique. Not to mention the all the other character interactions later on, which were extremely enjoyable. (As a slight warning, Roman takes a very antagonistic role in this series, which may not be to everyone's liking.) Coffee by HorseCrazyWriter76 Coffee shop AU* (Gen) Rating: G This is a Very Normal Coffee Shop AU. Notes: *Look, I don't know how to describe this one without giving away the fun. I can offer an unreality warning, but that's about it. The Ghost Janus AU series by SoDoRoses (FairyChess) Supernatural AU (Dukeceit, LAMP) Rating: T Remus is a ghost obsessed eccentric who has just bought his dream home (i.e. one that is definitely haunted) and Janus is his thoroughly deceased new roommate. It's a love story. Notes: One of my favorites/most re-read fics. Was inspired to re-read it once again by the next fic on the list.

WIPs You Haunt Me and I Like It by sevenstevearmy Supernatural AU (Analogical, Royality) Rating: M Logan and Roman are roommates, Virgil is the ghost haunting their apartment. After Logan and Virgil fall for one another, they proceed to fake a "long distance" relationship to keep Logan's friends from suspecting that he's dating a ghost. (Which is a lot less funny than it sounds when mental health struggles and insecurity decide to get in the way.) failed bounties and fresh bonds by delimeful Fantasy AU (Gen) Rating: T Virgil is a child giant living on his own in the woods. Remus is the hunter the villagers send after the "monster" living on their borders. Note: Adoption fic with protective Remus. Sanders sides but as centaurs by Annadekiller Modern AU/Slavery AU (Gen) Rating: Not Rated (see notes) Dystopian AU where centaurs exist and despite being sapient are treated as beasts of burden. After meeting Logan, Thomas does what he can to save the abused centaur from torment. And then it happens again. And again... Notes: Saw this one so many times before I actually gave it a look. If I were going to put a rating on it, I'd put it at an M for occasional violence and brief but frequent depictions of torture and abuse. Lots of hurt/comfort, though. The worldbuilding is interesting, and the occasional forays into crime drama were kind of an unexpected treat.

I have decided to use this blog for general SaSi content along with ocs because reasons, will tag accordingly (TCM au posts will use the tags they’ve been using) so uh sanders sides swap au that’s been rotating in my brain for a while

No one swaps what they represent but they swap roles in the story more or less

Patton swaps with Janus, Roman swaps with Remus, and Logan swaps with an orange side I made up. Virgil is now the protagonist instead of c!Thomas but Thomas doesn’t really take Virgil’s role, I will explain how that works. (Under the cut cause this got very long)

This takes place in a universe where c!Thomas’ life went differently in a variety of ways that led his perception of what parts of him are good and what parts are bad to change very rapidly. I’m not sure how everything ended up the way it did exactly and in case I do end up doing things with this au I’m not going to reveal what I do have decided just yet. (I will say Thomas was unable to pursue his passions here and has a corporate job he hates which is kind of relevant) But whatever happened differently led to the worse parts of the canon light sides being emphasized and the better parts of the canon dark sides being emphasized. Eventually leading them to trade places in terms of how Thomas viewed them.

Sel (Janus. short for self perseverance or selfishness), Ideas (Remus), and Defense (Orange, he’s anger in this au btw) are aware of this, they know they weren’t meant to be in the positions they are, at least not like this. All of them are secretly terrified of losing the positions they’re in. Feelings (Patton), Pride (Roman), and Logic (you know who this is) are also aware of this, and it infuriates them. They were supposed to help Thomas, they want to help Thomas. They just want what’s best for him but for some reason he can’t see that. If they have to push things farther to get things how they should be then so be it.

Caution (Virgil) is a new side, the first they’ve had since Thomas was a kid/teen, he just got here and knows nothing about how things got the way they did. He decides to record his journey to find his place as a part of Thomas, and these vlogs are (for the most part) the pov we would see from.

This au has a bigger emphasis on the mindscape, it’s bigger and more complicated cause I thought it would be cool idk. Specifically it’s part of how Janus keeps the sides he wants repressed hidden. There are parts of the mindscape said to be unsafe that no one’s supposed to go into, Thomas doesn’t know why and when Caution shows up, neither does he. Thomas decides to sneak in one day (he’s more reckless here plus the idea of the supposedly dangerous and scary part of the mindscape always intrigued him) with Caution tagging behind him because if he can’t stop Thomas from acting like a dumb horror movie protagonist he might as well go with him to keep him safe.

What they find is actually a lot calmer than what they expected, maybe even less chaotic than what the rest of the mindscape can be at times. It’s nice but it almost seems fake, too perfect to be real. They look around until they. hear. something. Virgil gets them out of there before either of them can see if the ominous voice in the allegedly unsafe part of the mind is actually dangerous and upon returning get lectured by Janus. Virgil asks wtf that voice might’ve been, Janus says (lying) that he isn’t sure, maybe a monster, an illusion, nothing good that’s for sure. They walk away but Virgil stays by the entrance just a second longer than Thomas and Janus, for a second he sees something try to exit before being forced back inside.

It didn’t look like a monster or an illusion or whatever Janus said was in there though, it looked like another side. Of course the embodiment of anxiety overthinks this so eventually he decides to sneak back in there alone.

And then nothing bad happened to any of them ever (lie)
