Nothing is more more vulnerable than the words in our mouths, because nothing has more power." The colonizers figured out the power of language early on. One of the first steps they took was to suppress and eliminate the native languages. The next step was to enact violence if one was caught speaking native languages. The third step was to remove the children to ensure that these native languages would die and not be accessible to future generations. Language has always held power. Language has always been the start of revolution. Language has always been used to uphold white supremacy, racism, patriarchy, xenophobia among many other-phobias. If they control the language, they control the narrative. In other words if they can silence your words, they can break your spirit. If they control the words, they can mold your thoughts. Pay attention to the story they are trying to tell you about the insurrection at the Capitol. ¤ Whose power and perspective is reflected in the words you are hearing? ¤ What words are being used to describe the failed insurrectionists? ¤ Who is describing them as simply "angry people"? ¤ What is to be gained by using certain words? ¤Who are these "Americans" of whom they speak? ¤ If the language of colonized and enslaved people holds no power, why go to such great lengths to exterminate them? ¤ Who decided to make your words foreign on your own land? Words matter. They always have. At the very core, your words reveal who you are and what you believe.
