okay so I didn’t have the motivation to do Appreciation Week at first, but seeing @yonpote do it all in one day has inspired me so let’s do it! (but with screenshots and stuff bc Yeah LMAO)

Day 1 - Favourite Dan and/or Phil quote:

the entire opening from the pinof 7 bloopers is hilarious but by far one of my favourite quotes (one that has continually haunted me since 2016, when I watched it for the first time) is:

D: Stand still!

P: Stencil!

D: … I’m gonna hit you. [laughs] Shut up!

I quote this weirdly often in my fics. In fact, I’m pretty sure two of my recent published fics use it as a reference. I didn’t realise until now that I was partially misquoting it XD

I also can’t not mention, from Basically I’m Gay (the entire part from when Dan starts talking about Phil is linked, quote starts about twenty seconds later):

D: We are real best friends, companions through life, like actual soulmates […]

maybe he was trying to be ironic, but there’s something intensely poetic about his body language when he describes them as actual soulmates

I’m obsessed with it, but in like the way people don’t shut up about Pride and Prejudice, maybe, idk I’m just bisexual and hoping that I get half as lucky as the boys have

there are many more moments tbh I could say LMAO

Day 2 - Favourite Dan and Phil Series:

OUGHHHHH THIS ONE IS ACTUALLY REALLY DIFFICULT—

what is now called Season 1 of the Sims 4 and the Undertale playthrough are VERY close contenders, but I think my favourite series is actually the DITLs! (there’s no playlist for this one rip)

you can easily split them into two or three sections (depending on if you count any of The Making Of videos for TABINOF, the calendars, or the prep for II as DITLs), and each section has something wonderful to enjoy!

the ‘local’ DITLs (Manchester and London) are incredibly domestic, with the boys just going about a semi-typical day, and the Festive DITL honestly just turns that up to a hundred, I love the domestic ones so much

the ‘holiday’ ones too (Japan and Australia) are also super fun, because we get to see the boys doing silly touristy things like holding koalas or hanging around one of the busiest intersections in Tokyo (I also keep hearing conspiracies about the Australian one LMAO)

the ‘making of’ videos are their own unique source of slice-of-life entertainment, because They’re Getting Important Stuff Done but they’re making it entertaining for us too

my favourites are the original DITL and Festive DITL <3

Day 3 - Favourite Dan and/or Phil Outfit:

used @phanoutfitsblog’s screenshots for most of these, with the exception of Dan’s initial look in the baking video (also I’d be lying if I said that Sister Daniel wasn’t high up on this list hhhh)

can Phil stop being pretty for FIVE MINUTES JEEZ— it’s actually incredibly difficult to pin down favourite outfits for him bc he just. Keeps. On. WINNING.

his red shirt in the red carpet roasting video is probably the most iconic so far but it could really have been literally any other outfit he’s worn in the last several years

and Dan’s no slouch, either! this man is gorgeous and he ROCKS it! he wore this particular shirt (?) to an interview (or at least it was framed like one) and he looks INCREDIBLE in it but I can’t remember where I found the other screenshot so I won’t post it lmao

his initial appearance in the Halloween baking video before he changes into Sister Daniel is also equally pretty bc of the makeup and honestly? gimme your gender Howell

other honourable mentions include a recent magazine shoot that I’ve forgotten the name of (some phan I am LMAO, shame on me for only remembering the pink), and his dystopia motorcycle twink shirt from the red carpet video

Day 4 - Favourite Joint Content

oooh, difficult question, that’s like choosing a favourite child! still, the answer to this one is a lot simpler than Day 5 below, because it’s the original PINOF, as well as the photobooth challenge!

while PINOF wasn’t my initial introduction to the boys (that goes to the Sims 4), it’s one of the earliest things I watched of them, and almost certainly what got me to stick with them! (along with the Sims 4… LMAO)

Dan says he was being ironic when he said ‘this is the most fun I’ve ever had, and maybe it’s the tism kicking in, but he doesn’t sound sarcastic or ironic when he says that

it’s pretty clear from the get go that they’re two boys (boys in love, even) making a silly video, having absolutely zero idea that it’s going to change the world <3

the pb challenge, meanwhile, is just incredibly funny, I remember almost hurting myself from laughing so hard the first time I watched it XD it hasn’t aged perfectly, but that’s most things from ten years ago

the honourable mentions list is VERY long so I won’t put all of them here LMAO, but the Get Down video is one of them XD

Day 5- Favourite DanAndPhilGames video

oooh, another difficult question, here, because more often than not, the answer is yes! I could say the Halloween baking video one day, and the Katamari video the next, and one of the Sims 4 building videos because I’m a sucker for renovations (also, the GAY WEDDING and the RETURN in general!), and honestly there’s so many videos I’ve forgotten over the years (LOVE NIKKI!) but I think I’m gonna say the finale of Undertale!

it makes me cry every time I rewatch the series, and it’s such a beautiful story, and yeah I’m a mess just thinking about it, because the fact that they chose to be pacifists from the get go is one of the genuinely sweetest things I can think of

Day 6 - Favourite Solo Video(s)

oh no I don’t actually know how to fully answer for Dan, but at a guess… yeah who am I kidding, it’s BIG and We’re All Doomed! :D (yes I know WAD! isn’t a video (yet, hopefully) but it overrides literally everything else bc I loved that night so much)

BIG, as a queer person, is just honestly so incredibly important to me, because being able to listen to other queer people — very successful ones, too — and how they’ve struggled in ways I’ve been fortunate to have never suffered, and how they overcame it all, and are still dealing with it to this day? yeah I’m still so proud of Dan for it all, he deserves the life he’s made for himself <3

WAD is in a similar vein to this, but with the addition of me being able to actually MEET Dan and then watch him on STAGE as he did his comedy show! I made him laugh with a joke about Australian summer being hell, and that’s probably one of the best things that has ever happened to me <3

honourable mention goes to his Keep On Movin’ video, bc that’s just damn impressive

Phil, meanwhile… I have so many videos to choose from, and while Coming Out To You carries the same importance as BIG, if not more since I watch it more (I love them equally, but COTY is only eight minutes long okay), I am actually struggling to choose a favourite outside of it!

mostly because all my favourite Phil videos… are joint content videos!

that being said, his fourth ACNH video is incredibly sweet, and I think I might go rewatch the series!

also his house review videos (the apartment one and the expensive house one) are pretty iconic

AND the sleepless night series— can you see why I’m struggling? :’D

Day 7 - What do Dan and Phil mean to you?

(oh god I am so sorry for this monster)

I don’t remember 2016 being a particularly rough year for me, despite the many star-studded losses (rip Anton Yelchin especially), and maybe it would’ve been that way even if I hadn’t found Dan and Phil, but finding them at what could be considered their initial peak of fame was probably one of the best things that could have happened to me, because I was just a year into my experiences with internet fandom, and what better way to do that than get yeeted into the chaotic world of two British dorks on the net that everyone and their cat shipped?

I may have missed out on the radio shows, sure, and I missed out on pretty much every YouNow and Rize show and whatnot because I’m a goose, but I came into the fandom just in time to see TATINOF live, even though I couldn’t get a meet and greet ;w; one day I’ll catch Phil

I distinctly remember being at the Gold Coast Eisteddfod, which was an hour south of Brisbane, on the same night as TATINOF, and absolutely booking it back with my mum to Brisbane, stressing the entire way even as we got McDonalds and I got changed out of what was either my school uniform or my performance uniform (I can’t remember) into something more normal for a night at QPAC

and yet, once I was there, I had probably one of the best nights of my life, because TATINOF, in my opinion, is the best thing the boys have ever done on stages (II and WAD! are very close tho don’t get me wrong)

someone helped me draw cat whiskers on my face, I remember chatting happily to other phannies around me (what about, I have long forgotten), and I remember how loud it was, and how much I didn’t mind that, for the first time in my life

I bought more merch at II and WAD!, because I was either given more money or I actually had money to spend since I got my job by WAD!, but, even when disappointed by the fact that I couldn’t afford much, I have cherished my TATINOF lanyard since that fateful night in August 2015, because it symbolises just how much I love the two gay dorks who are now two of my biggest queer role models

the fact that they chose us over fame and fortune in the entertainment industry? I’m so grateful for that, because it means, even though we gave them utter hell (I wasn’t quite one of them, but I probably did a few minor demon things as a teen LMAO), they cared, and still care, about us, the audience

this is getting SO long and waffly, oh my GOD, this is why my current fic is eleven k long already, uhhhh tl;dr they’re weird and queer (affectionate), I’m weird and queer, and I am so glad I found them, because having them in my life is one of the best things that’s ever happened to me, down to graduating from high school and university and having their videos to watch <3

okay that’s enough sappiness this took me like three or four hours love y’all <3

2023 Writer Year-In-Review

Big change for me compared to last year—in addition to NaNoWriMo, I actually posted fanfics! I tried to add some new questions to this year’s edition, I hope they might even move out of my tiny circle.

Total Word Counts: 51,920 for 2023 NaNoWriMo 15,570 on 2022 NaNoWriMo project 19,193 for July 2023 Camp NaNoWriMo (mostly fanfics) 28,310 in published fanfics (this number is overlapping with camp nano, I wasn’t paying attention, so I’m not going to add everything together)

Total Number Of Completed Works: 10 Total Number of WIPS worked on this year: 10 or so How Many WIPs do you still have: 23

Looking back, did you write more than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you’d expected? I wrote way more than expected! I seriously didn’t think I would do NaNoWriMo again. And I published ten fics! That’s ten more than last year!

Did you take any writing risks this year? The NaNoWriMo project was definitely a risk for me. I basically had an idea and no outline. It was quite a challenge to my perfectionism issues—I had to basically never reread anything and just keep going, fully aware that I can better foreshadow the ideas that came up halfway through in the next rewrite.

Biggest Surprise: I wrote for NaNoWriMo again, which I was pretty sure wouldn't happen lol, and hit the word count, all through discovery writing, and having very little idea where I was going with it.

Biggest Disappointment: I dropped that above mentioned project the moment November ended! I can tell it has potential, hidden in there. I will definitely return to it.

Do you have any writing goals for the new year? I’d love to at least finish the first draft of the 2023 NaNoWriMo project, bringing it to a tentative end so I can actually reread it and go from there. And keep writing fanfic, and maybe even work on the 2022 nanowrimo project…

Fanfiction Questions Below! (if you don’t write fanfiction feel free to skip or rework the questions for your original works.)

Fandoms I’ve written in this year: I wrote fics for 7 different fandoms! For the following kdramas: Island, Tale of the Nine Tailed, Memorist, Royal Secret Agent, W: Two Worlds, May I Help You?, and a little Korean Web drama called Handmade Love.

Your most popular story of the year? That would be Besides You with 327 hits and 47 kudos. However Superhero got the most comment interaction with 4!

The story that was easiest/or most fun to write: I Think He Knows was fun to write! I do just love brooding with a heart of gold formerly immortal male leads.

Hardest story to write: Rescue Me, Superhero, Restore, and Prayers & Promises were four works that I had left for dead, and came back and found them to be basically finished and just needed proofreading. (So just in case anyone wondered how I turned out three of those in like two days: they were actually done and I was hellbent on getting them out of my WIPs list)

Your sweetest story: That would definitely be Superhero. I altered my normal narrative style to better fit the child’s character, and I was really pleased with how it turned out.

Your saddest scene: I feel like I hit a lot of angst this year, but nothing really sad?

The sexiest moment you’ve written this year? *coughs* I wrote five pieces of smut. (Half of my fanfics were smut this year?!) Umm, I’m torn between Beside You and Don’t Blame Me? But also Never Be the Same and Take On Me???

Your favorite tag: (whether you use it the most or just something witty/perfect for the story) My brother announced to me that he reads all my tags (he was trying to embarrass me about one of my smut pieces) so I did a shout out to him in the next fic. He saw it within the day, I was actually impressed.

Most unintentionally telling story: (have you accidentally or purposefully exposed a detail about yourself?) Religious guilt seems to be a reoccurring tag this year. In all seriousness, not quite sure why, but yet it kinda makes sense? (its complicated lmao) And for some reason not one, but two fics ended with marriage proposals?! (I’m so single.)

Are any of your fics named after/heavily inspired by music? I’m RaisedonRadio and it would be concerning if—checks list—less than 8 of the 10 fics weren’t named after songs, haha! (I’m actually just really bad at naming fics…)

Good To You and Besides You are both songs by the band Marianas Trench, and are heavily inspired by the songs. Rescue Me is by OneRepublic, one of those more vibes than lyrics inspired. I Think He Knows by Taylor Swift was definitely on repeat for that fic, as well as Don't Blame Me. (Poems), Prayers, and Promises was more a steal the name of the song by John Denver, for some reason I think Cold by Corbyn was on repeat when writing that one. Take On Me was named more for the similarities between the MV and the series! Never Be The Same was for the vibes of the song by Camila Cabello but not really the lyrics.

What’s your own favorite story of the year? Maybe it’s cheating but I’m not sure if I can really choose? I know it’s not a common writer sentiment but I really do like them all for different reasons.

Like I churned out Good To You and Besides You within ten days of each other in July, after not writing any fanfic basically for a year and a half.

And then I pulled Rescue Me out of the dead drafts pile and made myself work on more description.

I Think He Knows was my first foray into a brand new fandom.

Don’t Blame Me is one of my rare canon divergence fics.

Restore was another dead draft that I found to be mostly complete, and decide to release into the world even if I knew there was so much more I could have done with it.

Prayers and Promises was not only another new fandom, but for some reason, I decided to write for a side character. It’s still sitting on just 1 hit and that makes it all the better that I really wrote it for myself.

Superhero was out of my comfort zone of writing for a kid’s perspective and I was so happy with how it turned out.

Take On Me was a draft sitting at less than 1k words and I challenged myself to finish it before the new year, and got it done in two days.

And then, to finish it all off with the intense desire to have ten fics under the belt for 2023, I wrote Never Be The Same in less than two days for the last drama I had watched, and the speed that the last two fics were actually finished was a huge change for me.

Fanfiction risks you took this year? I wrote fanfic for not one, but two fandoms that I had to create the first tags for on AO3! Also, as I started to slip into just writing for kdramas this year, I’ve basically become my own proofreader and editor at this point. Any mistakes are my own, lol.

My favorite part of fandom this year: That would be getting two kudos and a comment on I Think He Knows, one of the fics that is the first in its fandom tag. To actually connect with more fans of such a tiny project was so cool!

Writing reflection

What a frickin' year. I haven't been in a fandom like this since Scorpion which, for those who know, ended poorly for both the whole fandom and me as a person. I was unable to watch the season 4 premiere due to my Dad's death, and then it got cancelled before I could catch up. Jumping back into a fandom head first, after how miserable my last one ended, was scary but incredible.

I beat NaNoWriMo 3 times in one year for the first time since 2016. I wrote two novella length fics and a novel length fic from December 2022 until now. I've made friends with incredible people, learned how to use tumblr in a way that keeps me safe, and learned that I've grown past the person I was when I let other people drive me out of a fandom for writing fic in a way I enjoyed and being autistic. I feel safe in this fandom, not for the lack of drama (lord knows there's plenty of it), but because I've created for myself a space where I know I can trust the people I follow.

I am excited to vault headfirst into 2024. I have no predictions. I have no expectations. I just have hope, and I think that's enough.

But I really do hope I can keep writing, even if it's at a different pace from 2023.

Congrats on 3K followers! Very much deserved. I'm a new follower and was curious to know the story behind your blog (how long youve had it for and how you started out/transitioned into f1) only if you want to share your story of course (:

sit down and get some popcorn babes, here is my life story

Back story, I’ve been writing fanfiction since 2011, I started on quotev (If anyone remembers that) and it was solely 1D fanfics also i was way too fcking young to be writing fanfiction

I started this blog in like mid 2016 and it was mainly an mcu blog (cough cough Tom Holland/Peter Parker) and I wrote a lot of one shots and more on here, but that where the name ‘holllandtrash’ comes from :’)

I took a break from writing fanfic from like mid 2018-2020 bc I started school, moved across the country, dropped out of school, moved back home, went back to school, thought I was in love yadda yadda but I sort of fell out of writing during that time or if I did write, I would never post it

Oh but what happened in 2020 ??? Pandemic !!!! AND the 10 year anniversary of one direction so I actually started to get back into 1d fanfic writing (didn’t post any of it) but I fell back in love with fanfiction while I was stuck at home

I also fell in love w Harry Potter again and then I started a wattpad like mid 2020 and wrote a few HP fics on there that are horribly long and one of them isn’t even completed yet BUT that was most of my 2021, hp, tik tok, wattpad and school

That leads me to falling in love with F1 early in 2022 (I’m a new fan) and honestly for the entirety of last year I was still writing my Harry Potter fics, (shoutout to Elusive & Burn) I was in school up until May, had a full time job after that (still have it), broke up w my ex 💅 decided to save up to move across the world (still working on that part) but everything was going good up until December of 2022

I stopped writing because Christmas is always chaotic for me and my family and work was stupid busy and i was planning a 3 week trip for January and then I got back from that trip and suffered from a burst fucking eardrum of all things so I couldn’t work and i was stuck at home I was lonely and had no motivation

And then one day in February, still with the HP fanfic on hold bc I just couldnt bring myself to write it, I decided to log onto my good ol tumblr and what do I see but some F1 stuff and I’m like oh this is lovely (bc the season hadn’t started yet and i missed the drivers) and one of the first things I saw was a social media au and I was like hey wait…I could do that...

So I did and the Pierre smau (worlds collide) was my first ever piece of f1 writing- if you can even call it that, but then I was hooked. I stuck with the smau’s for the most part for the first few weeks but it was a really good transition to actually writing one shots and eventually back into chaptered fics

I wish I had liked or reblogged that first social media au I saw because it really jump started me back into writing after taking almost three months off

anyway now I am writing when I can, splitting my time between Tumblr and trying to write a real book. My Harry Potter fic on wattpad is still on hold and I would like to go back to it but it’s hard. But this platform really pushed me to just focus on what i love and all of the kind and supportive messages from followers like you remind me why I love to write, I want to write for other people, I want people to feel the things that I feel, even if just for a short amount of time

i'll try to publish a book one day but man writing is fucking hard so who knows

Be kind to your writing.

I’ve been posting stories on this site since 2016. It’s a little amazing to me to look back at the first story I ever posted (a somewhat controversial fic fill of God trying to set Lucifer up with a guy) and the latest (an anti-hero superhero story).

Being kind to my writing is the only way I can continue as a writer. Every mistake I’ve made - grammatical and otherwise - is entombed on this blog. There are stories that didn’t accomplish what I meant them to do, stories that were meant to grow into series and didn’t, and stories that haunt me to this day because I never figured out the right voice for them.

I have hundreds of messages from people who don’t like my writing or my beliefs (notably one anon who told me to stop writing about gay things and tenaciously begged me to stop for like three months lmaooo).

But

I have thousands of messages from people who love what I post. I still get overwhelmed thinking about some of those messages. They paralyze me with how wildly grateful I am that I, of all people, could share something that resonates. I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to fully describe the joy that this journey has given me. This blog has given me a platform for the types of stories that I want to write and a community of readers and writers who have relentlessly cheered me and others on.

When I first started on this blog, I was ghostwriting far below market rate. I’d just quit driving an ambulance. I was in a very bad spot mentally and I didn’t know what I wanted to do with my life. I’d been told that writing would never be enough, but it was all I wanted to do.

Creating this blog was a radical act of self-love. And it fucking worked.

Now? I self-published a book in 2017 and Im doing it again this year. Over 200 people support me on Patron and, with their help, I have the ability to write every day. I’m so ridiculously happy that I get to write and know that there are people out there excited to read what I’ve made.

I have pride in how far I’ve come. I look back at these old stories and I make an effort to be kind. The person I was - the writer I was - was learning. I still am learning. I enjoy reading my old writing. It’s entertaining! Sure there are bits that I don’t like, but it’s worth it to read old stories for the bits that I do.

After six years on this blog (september is my anniversary month!) this is my biggest takeaway.

Don’t be embarrassed by old writing. Be proud that you learned and grew from it. Celebrate where you’ve been and how far you’ve come. Treat your older stories as if the past you was reading them beside you. What did you need to hear then? Criticism and ridicule? Or encouragement?

Drink water.

Summary: Simon Snow dies in the White Chapel, and Baz has to live an immortal life without him. Or so he thinks. Every twenty years, when the Veil lifts, Simon and Baz are able to reunite. Something is keeping Simon from moving on, and Baz doesn’t know if he wants to find out what that is, because it would mean letting go.

And if there’s one thing Baz can not do, it’s letting Simon go.

Notes: Welcome to the fic that I affectionally call “damn Baz, you live like this?”, although Christina @facewithoutheart is the one who came up with the title Time After Time (thanks!)

I started this fic before Any Way The Wind Blows got published, so when it was still up in the air whether Baz was immortal or not, so back then I ran with the immortal!Baz idea and it turned into this. A few weeks ago I decided to finally revisit it and I’m happy to tell you that it’s almost finished. Yes, almost. The first four chapters are already finished and I hope to update this every Monday.

Before

2016

I almost did not go to the funeral.

In the end, I decided to go there to support Bunce. I wonder if I will ever forget the image of her screaming and clinging to Simon’s lifeless body. I don’t think I ever will.

It was short and, well, sweet. It was a private funeral. The entire World of Mages could mourn their Chosen One, the Greatest Mage who sacrificed himself to defeat the Humdrum.

We mourned Simon.

I didn’t cry. I never do.

After the funeral, Bunce came up to me to tell me that she’s moving to America. She’s going to Chicago. Her boyfriend Micah lives there.

“I never actually planned on going to America,” she had said. Her voice was raw because of all the crying. “Simon always thought that, but no way in hell I was going to leave him.”

Now, she has no reason to stay.

Wellbelove has also decided to leave, but she’s going to California. She wants to become a vet. A Normal vet.

I was never friends with either of them, but having them leave makes me ache. I did go to the funeral, but I did not go to the airport to say goodbye.

A lot of people don’t understand why I have come back to Watford. No one expected me to. This is the place where my mother and my boyfriend were murdered by the Mage.

But people don’t understand how much Watford meant to those two. Simon loved Watford more than anything, including me, probably. And I was not going to be the first drop-out in the Pitch family. My mother would’ve wanted me to finish my education.

It hurts to have the room to myself, though. Mitali Bunce, who is now the Headmistress, even tried to bend the rules, but magic can be unforgiving. I spend most my days outside my room and I spend the nights in Dev and Niall’s room.

I’m so grateful to have them as friends. No one else approaches me. They pity me, since they know what I’ve lost.

Everyone knows the true nature of my relationship with Simon. This was not the grandiose coming out that I had planned, but I also hadn’t planned on Simon being murdered. I still don’t fully understand how it happened. One moment, Simon and the Mage were holding each other. The next, they both dropped dead.

Dev and Niall try their best to distract me from my thoughts, but they weren’t there. They didn’t see what I saw. Still, I appreciate them.

With Bunce gone, I am the top of our class. I am asked to give a speech at the Leaver’s Ceremony. I decline.

2017

I don’t make friends during uni. Dev and Niall have become a couple and they’ve moved to Oxford together.

I try not to be jealous of them.

2022

Mitali Bunce is surprised to see me.

“Well, I must be dreaming,” she says when she reads my application again.

“You’re not, ma’am.”

Mitali looks up from my CV. “You sure you want this?”

I nod. Watford is my home. Watford brings me closer to the ones I’ve lost. I’m ready.

Dee’s favourite: Honestly, violent delights is just so sweet? I love all of their works, but violent delights has a special place in my heart. The sheer hilarity of WWX’s Golden Core just refusing to reside in JC’s body made me cackle. Also, it ended so sweetly. I really love it!

Ju’s favourite: This was hard, but I’m between “i’ll keep walking” because I love time travel and Wen Qing, and she is so badass on this one, and fixes everything, and in the end she has her family safe, including her new brother Wei Wuxian. And “in payment, a hand”, that is a very interesting series, and Wei Wuxian gets a family that he deserves, and the Jiangs also get what they deserve. It’s sad in the beginning, but it gets so soft at the end, and we can see wangxian intimacy, and how they love each other. It’s just really lovely, okay?

The interview:

Q. When did you start writing fics? Did you have fandoms before this one?

A. I started around 2009. My first fanfiction attempts were for the 2003 Fullmetal Alchemist anime and movie and pretty quickly petered off, but I really got into fanfiction when I reread and finished watching Naruto around 2016. It’s still the fandom I’ve produced the most published (and unpublished) fanfiction for, but I’ve also written some works in the Voltron: Legendary Defender and Bleach fandoms.

Q. What made you start writing for MDZS?

A. I actually wasn’t planning on writing for MDZS! I wanted to write SVSSS fanfiction when I first got into danmei and c-novels! But I found some really thoughtful meta posts on characterization in MDZS and the MDZS fandom, as well as some fics that I felt were really good and showed really good characterization, which made me lose most of my self-control. And then I found some prompts that were going around, and I lost the rest of my self control and now, well, here we are.

Q. What’s your favourite fic you’ve written?

A. For MDZS, it’s a work-in-progress, but i had to abandon myself (you took all of me). It’s allowing me to explore philosophy for the first time in a few years, and it’s given me a reason to really research what the setting of MDZS might have been like and how cultivation (in the context of xianxia novels) works and could work.

Q. What’s your favourite type of fics to read?

A. I love love love fluff fics in general! I also have been really enjoying canon-divergence fics for MDZS, there’s some writers in this fandom who do those “what if?” kind of scenarios really well. Honorary mention, also, to fics where Wei Wuxian is raised in another sect

Q. What’s your favourite comment? Or type of comment?

A. Any comment!! Honestly, the entire idea that people like my writing enough to tell me will always boggle my mind, especially if it allows for me (as the author) to engage with my readers.

Q. What motivates you to write?

A. Most of the time, just the simple need to get an idea down and tell a story. I’ve been writing fiction since I was in fourth grade and fanfiction has been a really good outlet for me in that regard. Occasionally I’ll dive back into original fiction, but fanfiction in particular already has a basis for characterization which makes it easier, for me, to write.

Q. Who’s your favorite author?

A. I honestly can’t choose a favorite fan author because there are soooooo many who are incredibly talented, but in terms of professional authors I love MXTX (of course) and Tamora Pierce! If you like historical fantasy, I highly recommend her Tortall and Emelan books.

Q. What is your favorite trope to read and/or write?

A. I loooooove soulmate AUs (as evidenced by how many of them I’ve written for other fandoms)! I also really love, in the MDZS fandom, to read and write time travel AUs. They allow for really cool exploration of what could happen and how one person’s actions could change the whole course of the story.

Q. Do you have any advice for new authors?

A. You don’t need to finish everything you start. I have folders just full of WIPs that I’m probably never going to finish, but all of those words and all of that plotting and planning still contributed to where I am today! Also, I highly recommend keeping those unfinished works because one day you might use them! I’ve reused ideas, dialogue, and even actual passages from my WIP when writing something new.

Q. What do you think is the most important element in writing? Plot, characterization, relationship?

A. Of course, all elements are important, but characterization! Characters usually drive every other aspect of the plot, the setting, and are usually make-or-break for me as a reader.

19. Tell me a story about your writing journey. When did you start? Why did you start? Were there bumps along the way? Where are you now and where are you going?

I started writing fanfic in August 2011. It was right after I came home from summer camp. I’d made a friend at camp who used Fanfiction.net, and it inspired me to make an account myself. ^^;

Initially, I wrote a bunch of weeb shit (Yu Gi Oh, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Fruits Basket, Naruto, etc)

In December 2013, I joined Tumblr. I went through a somewhat cringey Supernatural phase, and ended up posting a couple SPN fics on my FF account.

Then, in late 2015, I got really into Fall Out Boy. In March 2016, I posted my first RPF fic, to my main blog. It was Pete Wentz/Reader. It was set in the Sixteen Candles music video universe (so…Vampire!Pete).

I never actually finished it, because I got some rude comments about how writing fic about Real People was weird and cringey. 😔

Then, in July 2016, I started getting into MCR…and I wrote Party Poison/OC.

Someone I was mutuals with on main - trying to defend me - said, “well it’s not actual Gerard, it’s just a character he played. So it’s not weird haha”

Me in my head: I really want to write about Actual Gerard, though. Fuck. 😰

In October 2016, I created this blog, so I could write MCR reader inserts without shame. ^^;

From October 2016 to February 2021, I was consistently writing MCR fic. That’s an incredibly long time, and I’m so grateful for the friends I’ve made in this fandom. 🖤

But, as winter came to an end, MCR stopped being my special interest. In March 2021, I got really into the anime RWBY, and made an AO3 account, so I could post my RWBY fics there.

Then, In May 2021, I watched Eurovision, and it changed everything.

Mere days after Måneskin won the competition, I started writing a Damiano David/Reader fic. It was multichapter, which was huge for me, because I’d written literally nothing but oneshots for five years straight.

….I didn’t finish this fic, either. 🤦‍♀️

Sometime around August 2021, when Balboa came out, my brain switched special interests again, from Måneskin to Blind Channel.

…and that’s still where it’s at now, a year later. 🤷‍♀️ I don’t know how long this will be my special interest. Or what the next one will be after this. But, I’ve made so many great friends in the BC fandom, too. 💖 So, I hope I stick around for a while.

27. Who is the most stressful character you’ve ever written? Why?

….I had to think hard about this one, because fanfic is rarely stressful for me! I have so much fun with all my characters. 😄

I guess I kind of stressed about Demon!Niko, because that AU was far dirtier and more explicit, than anything else I had written in years. 😳

33. Do you practice any other art besides writing? Does that art ever tie into your writing, or is it entirely separate?

Writing is pretty much it for me ^^;

But, I don’t only write fanfic! Fun fact: I’ve been writing poetry since I was like, nine years old.

During middle school, I started reciting my poetry publicly. I even caught the attention of my local literary magazine, while competing at a poetry slam. The magazine was only published in the county where I lived, but I got to tell everyone I was a Published Author lmao

I also got second place in the school talent show 🥈

I took a break from it for a while, but, when I was 20, my friend convinced me to recite some poems at an open mic night at my university. I got so much applause, I was really blown away 🥰

I wish I could find an event like that where I live now. I really miss it. As for how it ties into my fic writing…I’m able to relate to Niko and Gerard a bit more, because they’re lyricists. Singing on stage and reciting on stage feel a little similar, I guess?

Hi guys, welcome to the first edition of The Tea Party, where I interview authors from the Minecraft Youtube fandom! Today’s guest is @squishyyyghost on Tumblr also known as Ship_On_The_Sea on ao3 and Wattpad!

Tell us a bit about yourself!

Well, my name really depends on who you know me as. Normally, I'm Squish, but people who know me for my dnf fics will recognize me as Ship. I go by she/they pronouns, and I'm most known for my dnf fics, notably 7 Minutes in Heaven, but it's 7 Days in Florida.

How'd you end up getting into the mcyt fandom?

Well, to be honest, I've been watching Minecraft Youtubers since about 2013; some of the first channels I subscribed to were actually Minecraft channels, believe it or not. The first fanfic I ever read was actually about mcyters. Despite that, I wasn't in the fandom then, I didn't even know what fandoms were back then. I think that honestly, I got into the mcyt fandom during the summer of 2020 after seeing a bunch of mcyters get recommended on my Youtube homepage and becoming invested in them, which led to me finding out about the mcyt fandom on Tumblr.

And then you started writing fics around the same time?

Not immediately. I got into a bunch around maybe April/May but didn't start writing fics until I got into the dream team at the end of May/early June.

What has been, in your opinion, one of the most rewarding things about writing for this fandom?

Well, I can think of two things, really. One is that this has been a great way for me to just write because I love doing it so much. The second is all of the positive feedback everyone leaves, it's been nothing like I've ever seen before. It's just incredible. I remember when I posted my first fic, I was so nervous but I was met with so much support even then. I think that honestly, the biggest reason I was able to write 7 Days to completion was because of all the support I was receiving from it since day 1 (both figuratively and in reference to the fic's chapter titles lmao).

Okay, random question time: favorite flavor of tea?

I... fam, I'm from the South- the only tea I've ever drunk has been iced and sweetened with sugar. My favorite drink is apple or grape juice though. My girlfriend loves tea though, I'm definitely going to try some when we meet up. We actually met bc of this fandom. She read 7 Days and followed me on Tumblr, and I recognized her Tumblr url from my ao3 comments and messaged her because I wanted to be friends, and it just kinda went from there. We just celebrated 6 months yesterday actually!

Congratulations! Speaking of your writing, is there something you've written that you'd like more people to read?

I feel like most of the oneshots I publish kinda fly under the radar for everyone because I think people just know me for 7 Days and don't realize I have other works, which is understandable.

How long have you been doing creative writing, not just in the mcyt fandom?

I started writing fics around 2016 because of a fandom I joined, so it's been almost five years of writing. Five years and I only have one completed fic, so it just kinda shows just how hard it has been for me to keep myself motivated.

I've written so many oneshots though. I wish I didn't delete my other Wattpad account that had my writings from that fandom, I think the oneshot book I had for it had roughly 50 oneshots that were written over the span of about two years

Holy cow, that's a lot of words.

Definitely. I mean right now with my 19 fics on ao3 I have a collective word count of 86,448 words.

Random fun fact, my fic "Thunder Singing Lullabies" was inspired by one of the oneshots in the collection, the title of the original oneshot was actually "Sick Stormy Mornings."

As always, I read a lot of fic and the majority of it is Larry. I like making lists and I like Larry so I thought I’d do some minimal research of the top 25 larry fics published/completed in 2019 in order of least to most kudos (with links). All of these fics are top notch so you should all check them out!

25.) Foolishy Laying Our Hearts on the Table by @runaway-train-works (11k)

“You think Harry wants that?”

“Dunno. Maybe. Wanna make him happy.” Harry takes advantage of the red light he’s pulled up to turn and look properly at Louis’ face. He’s not even looking in Harry’s direction though, focused instead on something out of his side window, head drooped, mindlessly playing with the string of his hoodie between his fingers, lost in his own world somewhere. For some reason, it makes Harry’s spine straighten.

“Because he’s your best mate?” Harry questions carefully.

“He’s my boyfriend.”

He couldn’t have heard him right. “What?”

Louis releases a deep breath, still not turning around. Harry wonders who he thinks he’s talking to right now. “He’s so pretty. Want to kiss him all day long. And buy him a big house and give him presents and marry him.”

The one where Harry is in love with his best friend Louis but doesn't think he stands a chance until some wisdom teeth and a rather unusual confession might just change his mind.

24.) Tainted Saints And Velvet Vices by @toomanydreamers (126k)

A self-fulfilling Hogwarts AU in which Louis is new to seventh year and Harry is the resident devil-may-care Slytherin set to make his entire experience a living misery. Due to less than favourable circumstances they're forced to forge an unwilling, tentative relationship for their own survival. Repressed emotions, decidedly unromantic ballroom dancing, Triwizard Tournament tasks, creative jinxes and twilight flying above the Forbidden Forest ensue.

“Harry, I-I’m so sorry…” Louis stutters out, trying to keep his voice level and even, to portray a depiction of strength, but with the way Harry is looking at him, staring at him like he has a personal passage way straight to Louis’ soul, it’s so hard, nearly impossible.

That simple opening phrase, that short introductory acknowledgement that is often rushed out so easily, painlessly, at a safe distance. Giving a doctor the ability to portray empathy without true emotion, without feeling the full brunt and sheer force of the underlying pain itself.

But Louis feels it, he feels the crushing agony laced behind the phrase, he feels the weight of the painful words slipping from his lips, the cause and effect that the three-word expression holds. The distantly empty “I’m so sorry” that doctors throw out in self-preservation, isn’t at all empty for him. Louis recognizes it, he understands it, he feels it.

a fated story of two broken and battered boys who barely survived the unimaginable and how the love of one little brave girl defies all the odds and somehow puts them back together.

22.) Raise a Glass to the Four of Us by @2tiedships2 (25k)

Louis stared at his luggage.

Well. Apparently not his luggage, because the clothing he was looking at currently was a: worth more than everything he currently possessed, b: not his size at all, and c: more suited for a fancy ass lawyer than a holiday in NYC with his best mates.

“Ooh, nice loafers,” Niall said as he pulled one out of the suitcase. “I love the rainbows.”

“Okay,” Liam began. “What do you want to do first? Eat, shop for new clothes, or spend hours on the phone with the airline?”

Louis continued to stare at the luggage.

“What am I going to do, Perrie? I can’t go on this retreat by myself. My boss literally said he wants to meet my omega.” Harry paused. “Okay, not literally but he definitely expects me to be bringing him.”

“Don’t people go on these things by themselves?” Perrie asked.

Harry shrugged. “Of course but that’s not the point.”

“What’s the point?”

“My boss is expecting to meet my omega! I don’t have an omega!”

“Is this a paying gig?” Perrie asked.

“You mean paying an omega to spend the weekend with me? I’m sure the resort has nice amenities. Does that count?”

“I take that as a no,” Perrie said with an eye roll. “It’s okay, Louis might be willing to do it for free.”

“Who’s Louis?”

Or the one where Harry is expected to bring his longterm omega to the company's mountain retreat. Since he hadn't told anyone that they'd broken up months ago, he now has to find someone willing to play the part.

Louis is a 30 year old multi-billionaire with a very dark past. He is violent and is a sadist with a taste for pain. Harry Styles is a 19 year old student who sets out to London after being kicked out by his homophobic father to follow his dreams. He wants to go to the best University to study but he needs a lot of money so he starts to work as a part time stripper at a gay club to support his studies and his life. The club he works at, Garland's, is part owned by Louis Tomlinson. When they meet, its life changing for the both of them.

“I’m sorry your highness, I think I misheard you, did you really say that you are hoping to meet your husband?” Oh god, Louis panicked. Was Prince Harry gay? Was he even allowed to be gay? Surely he wouldn’t be allowed to have a selection from a group of men, right?

Prince Harry looked partly like he wanted to laugh, but also very, very nervous about what he had just admitted, “Yes, sir, you heard correctly”

Or Prince Harry has 46 men and 13 weeks to find the husband of his dreams, Louis has a limited amount to time to live out a royal fantasy. They might just be exactly what the other needs.

Adrenaline makes Louis loose-lipped, and they both know it. He tightens his arms around Harry’s neck, buries his face in his hair. “I missed you,” he confesses, quiet. “Doesn’t feel the same up there by myself.”

The boy seems to also recognize Harry, because his lips curve into a knowing smirk.

“Harry is at the top of his class. He’s your best bet at getting familiar with things around here.” She explains.

Louis nods, his smirk still very prominent on his face. “Thank you Ms. Archie. I’ll be sure to take advantage of young Harold here.”

Summary: Two stories, eleven years, and the two boys that never stopped loving each other.

“To be fair, I did bend over the desk on purpose,” Louis’ voice comes crackling in the headphones. Harry practically breaks his neck whipping his head around at the sound of it, gaping at him through the glass panel. “You can’t really blame him for getting a little excited about that, can you?”

i started 2020 really happy, though i was still reeling from the shit relationship i was in for most of 2019. he was a cunt and we broke up in september 2019. i got attached again in feb 2020 to a guy i was seeing from late 2019.

my tumblr journey began in july (i don’t fkin remember what date it was anymore because it doesn’t matter) and long story short, tumblr has become my escape from reality. as most of you know i’ve been writing since 2014, just never touched this platform until 2016 because i was busy reading smuts WUPS but decided i wanted a more interactive platform with my readers so i ended up here.

first creation and most recent creation of 2020: my first creation was technically strike a chord, even if I didn’t actually publish it first (I was having issues with appearing in tags and I didn’t have any followers so I deleted it until I had some traction OOPS) and my most recent is cream & suga! so I started with yoongi and ended with yoongi! I guess that’s consistency for you

one of your favorite creations from 2020: oh, wow. this is a hard one. I think I’d have to say a human touch, because it was the one I struggled with the most- so when I finally finished it, it felt SO good. and everyone’s been so lovely, I can’t help but feel happy that I’ve created something that people enjoy.

a creation you’re really proud of: burning bright. I wrote it across two days and it was hard going but it was fun and I’m really proud of how it turned out, and I hope erin still likes it fdslkjdsf

a creation that took you forever: a human touch. it technically took months to write; I got blocked during it and had to work on other things, and I had to rework a lot of stuff. so glad I got it done and I had people supporting me!!

a creation you think deserved more notes: idk about “deserved”, but I really loved writing finding home and I think the premise is cute!

a creation you made that breaks your heart: wow most of my creations are marshmallow fluff so this is a hard one HMM.... things you said after it was over, probably. covid has led to me seeing my friends far less than normal and I was feeling really isolated early this year, and I ended up thinking about an old friend who I loved dearly and fell out of touch with. which is where the feelings in this fic come from. so there’s a lot of heartache around that, for me personally

a ‘simple’ creation that you really love: heavy lifting; I’m calling it “simple” because it was super self indulgent and I didn’t put a lot of effort into it, but it was a lot of fun and it’s made people laugh! so that’s nice

Most popular one-shot: I agonized over how to identify this: kudos, a ratio of kudos to hits? “Catch and Release” with 49 kudos since publishing a year ago today on my last birthday is definitely the most kudos I have ever received, but it has 693 hits. Whereas “I’ve Stumbled My Way Back”, which I published on the same day, has just 12 kudos but that’s with only 99 hits. It’s all relative anyway I suppose. Neither of them can really be called truly popular. Regardless, I’m proud of both of them, even if I’m not happy with the title of the first one.

Most popular multi-chapter fic: That is currently my only multi-chapter fic, Of Scrolls and Sleeping. It has gotten 8 kudos since I reposted it to AO3 in 2016. I originally wrote it in 2003 and posted it to the Sink into Your Eyes archive and the Astronomy Tower that same year. A Radiance That Travels will have more chapters at some point and already has more kudos, 43, in the year since I posted it.

Fic you were nervous to post: Pretty much everything I’ve ever posted. Trollbrain is the worst.

How you choose your titles: Usually I use song lyrics or “clever” wordplay that’s more pun than not, with varying degrees of success and satisfaction on my part.

Do you outline: Kind of, yes. I make a lot of notes on backstory and how I want things to go.

Complete: Complete is a relative term. I have 14 published works. I’d say 8 or 9 of them are complete.

In progress: In progress is also relative. I don’t really consider any of my unfinished works abandoned. I fully intend to finish them one day. When that day will be is anyone’s guess, despite my best intentions.

A Radiance That Travels is intended to be a multi-chapter work and more likely to be updated in the near future (I have a little over 1000 words of chapter two, but they need so much work and I haven’t touched it since April 2020). “I’ve Stumbled My Way Back” was initially supposed to be the first chapter in a longer work, but will more likely be the first work in a series of connected Shannara Chronicles one-shots. “Catch and Release” (I don’t really like this title) was going to be a scene in a longer Last of the Mohicans work but will also probably end up as one in a series of connected one-shots. 4 of my works are officially part of an Unfinished Tales series and are less likely to be completed anytime soon, but I am considering adding more unfinished works that are lower on my priority/interest list at this time.

As for unpublished works in progress, I have roughly 26 documents containing notes and snippets that correspond to the same number of potential works. Motivation is in short supply right now...

Coming soon: T_T Anything, please! I wish my motivation would return from the war...

Do you accept prompts: Well, I am a very slow writer and I hate disappointing people (ADHD/RSD) so I never ask for prompts, but if you don’t mind maybe never getting anything waiting, chat with me about ideas.
