Today I found and bought two new Sofia The First magazines in a magazine stand, in a town next to mine. (That's what the post is about) 🪻✨️💗
I live in a small town, I came to the neighboring city (a slightly bigger one; where there is a cinema, adequate medical care and clinics, things that are scarce in my town and everyone comes here when they need one of these things) to do an eyesight exam, because recebtly I've been feeling my vision getting worse. Going to the clinic, I found a magazine stand on the other street, and I asked my family (who were with me) if they could accompany me there later. I did the exam, and I'm still under the influence of the eye drops, so it's been torture to write this text, but I need to tell you what I found. You won't believe it: TWO DIFFERENT EDITIONS OF SOFIA THE FIRST MAGAZINES! THOSE THAT ARE NO LONGER PRODUCED! IN FACT, SEVERAL COPIES OF THEM! There were like, 7 magazines from the same edition, perfectly new, never touched, ON THE FLOOR. (And no, I'm not from Rio De Janeiro, there are a lot of sidewalks with this pattern here in Brazil)
A while ago, I think it was in January, I was wondering if I should also go to this city and look for Sofia The First merch, because in my small town I've already looked at all the stores and there's nothing left to see here (how many, about 4 ? 5? Yes, it really is a small city, I know all these places and you can visit them all in 1 or 2 hours at most, walking down the street, without a car). I found some stickers and birthday invitations, I posted them a while ago, I used them for journaling in my sketchbook.
(@shychick-52 do you see the Donald Duck magazines there?? When I saw them I immediately thought about you, they're on the bottom left of the pic and there's more in the top right. Pato Donald is Donald Duck, Tio Patinhas is Scrooge McDuck's name in Brazil. I don't know a thing about Ducktales, I'm sorry!)
I literally gasped. I was just going there for fun, as I like books, magazines and vintage products like records and CDs, so I really like physical media. Those places full of trinkets are extremely fun for me, and whenever I have the opportunity I like to look at everything, down to the smallest details. I love music and vinyl stores, stationery stores, party stores, haberdashery, so a magazine stand sounds amazing to me too! I hadn't been to one in years! (I never went thrifting in my life. It would be an amazing day to spend an evening)
There weren't only Sofia The First ones, you see, these kinds of magazines aren't produced anymore since kids don't have any interest in them. So most of the children's magazines there were dated around 2012-2016! You don't even have to look for the dates to know that, the Strawberry Shortcake ones, Frozen (FROZEN, DUDE! FROZEN!!!) (In one of my STF magazines there's even an ad of these Frozen magazines, they were produced during the same time), there were Disney Junior ones (If you look closely you can see the Lion Guard cover on that pic where I show you the pile of STF magazines, it's on top of them), Disney Princess, EVEN MONSTER HIGH. I didn't took a pic of this one, but as far as I know, you don't find these anywhere anymore. I felt like going back to 2015, when I was a kid those activity magazines and visiting the magazine stands were extremely fun, the themes on the children's magazines were exactly these, I remember the sticker albums, so many good memories. It makes sense, since they're the same ones, but they were never sold.
Besides the children magazines, they sell mangas, magazines, books, word search and activity books, cooking books, comic books/magazines (superhero themed or not- DC comics, Marvel, but also Disney and national works, for example our beloved Turma Da Mônica), and even toys and stuff.
So I figured maybe I'd find silly things here too, it's a bigger town but after all it's still small, it's just 40 mins away from mine, maybe I could find little birthday hats that I can cut out? Gift bags? Maybe stickers and coloring kits, silly things. Of course, knowing about the magazine stands there, something that my hometown NO LONGER has, inside of me had a small amount of hope that I could find something, but not much, as I live in the rural/interior part of Brazil and many products are bootleg, you know those princess books with wonky faces written "princess coloring book"? Stuff like that. But there was still a shred of hope, despite knowing that there probably wouldn't be anything interesting. I just went there because I have fun searching for little things.
AND WHEN I GOT THERE.... THE MAGAZINES WERE JUST THERE. AT THE ENTRANCE. ON THE ?!?!?!?!? FLOOR?!??!??! (You can see the pic up there) ON THE DIRTY SIDEWALK FULL OF DIRT AND DUST AND ALL KINDS OF NASTY THINGS?!??! HELL NAH
It was like they were just waiting for me to get them, they were the first things that I saw. I KNEW THAT I WOULD FIND SOMETHING. In fact, as I always hope to find cool things in these stores I frequent, I always expect something. I'm usually disappointed, but I always try to find it. AND THIS TIME I FOUND IT. NOT ONE, NOT TWO, BUT LIKE A DOZEN of STF magazines from the same edition, still packaged AND WITH THE GIFT. ALL OF THEM.
As my parents had work to do in our town and needed to return, I had to look at everything quickly. Luckily the magazine stand was small, so I was able to look at a few things, and while the attendant (who seemed bored (thankfully, the fact that she was very slow gave me time to look a little more)) served other customers (she was slow with them too, which gave me more time thank god), I continued looking at all sides of the stand, observing every small detail to look for treasures. If there were several copies of an issue of Sofia The First magazine still packed there, then there must have been more, hidden behind that enormous amount of information. I didn't had enough time because my parents needed to go back home, but I wish I could have saw the content from the Disney Junior magazines. I opened it and looked through the pages, only the last two pages were about Sofia The First, but I still had a lot to look so I put it back and went to search for more.
That's the one I got, the edition I mentioned
12 brazillian reais are worth around 2,50 dollars. For us, in talks about value, it would be like- 5 dollars? Not too cheap like literal 2 dollars, it's like, a cheap price, but not that much. For us, I mean. I don't know if you get what I mean, my explanation was terrible
Before, as we were late for the exam and the whole family was going (we all went to take the exam) I only took with me my cellphone and headphones, I didn't bring my money or even a purse or a backpack. My father bought me the magazine, I got so happy. Actually, he just let me have it and gave me the money, so I went to the attendant. The magazines had an elastic band around to secure them, as you can see in the pic, and I took them to the girl and asked for her help to get one out. As I'm used to being very friendly, and I was very happy, I approached the girl, asked for her help, and as she got them out of the elastic band, I kept talking "I can't believe I found this!! They are no longer produced, they are rare items, and I'm collecting them! I didn't think I would find anything like this here, it definitely made my day." I noticed that the attendant wasn't very friendly back, in fact she was very quiet and seemed a little bored, but I didn't care, I was too happy to worry about judgement looks from people I don't know, at least I was friendly and I did my part. My young brother later told me that when I turned my back she looked confused and shrugged, perhaps thinking "to each their own, right?". She went to serve the other customers and in the meantime I continued to look through the magazines, hoping to find more.
Important detail: I still had eye drops, my pupils were extremely dilated and I could see nearby objects blurred, so searching thoroughly was very difficult. Imagine looking at all that information without being able to see things closer than 1m from you. I'm still convinced I didn't manage to look at everything. I found more Disney Princess magazines (dated in 2014? 2015? somewhere around that) and that's when I saw it. I literally had to crouch down to look at the magazines in the lower sections of the shelf, they were stacked and they covered each other, and when I saw the Sofia The First logo I quickly grabbed it. IT WAS ANOTHER EDITION - A FLOATING PALACE THEMED ONE. Unfortunately this time it was out of the packaging, and I have no idea if someday there was even a gift with it, but I don't care, it was amazing to find this.
That's the Disney Princess magazines I was talking about! In that first pic I took, at the start of the post, you can see a Belle themed one. The Ariel themed magazine looks so old that the paint is stained and started to fade (it was in the front showcase while the other ones were carefully placed inside the stand), thankfully the STF ones were brand new. Well, almost.
Now that I'm home and I'm already seeing a little better, I'm gonna show you the magazines. Not all of them unfortunately, because a post only supports 10 pics and each magazine has 15/20+ pages so like... yeah. I wanna scan them and put them in a Google drive folder, or at least post a video about them in my YouTube channel, but that's more unlikely. If I had all of them, definitely, but I don't think it's worth recording a video if it's not with all the issues, don't you think? Anyway.
What's written in the first one: The Queen's Birthday Party! (This one came with the necklace)
In the second one: Sofia's vacation!
Let's take a closer look at the necklace
I'm fighting the urge to use it. I really want to use that tag in my sketchbook and the charm of the necklace in something like a keychain, but I cann'ttt bring myself to destroy something that is not produced anymoreeee😭😭😭
In the Floating Palace magazine, there is not even a single page where the sea monster is in. Not even a single one.
But in the "Queen's Birthday Party" one, there are three pages where Cedric is in! Yayy!!! They did him justice!!!
If anyone's curious about Miranda's birthday party, it's a comic and someone already posted it on Tumblr. Here is the link.
You know, that "Queen's Birthday Party" it's very exclusive, I don't remember the show having any episode like this, and the next activities in the magazine talk about the vacation they did in the comic and also the birthday party. Besides that, we have a lot of activities related to Tilly and family, and the main arts and crafts activity from this magazine is making a family tree. I believe that this magazine's topic is family.
I can't show you all the pages, but at least I can publish the pages Cedric is in and add more stuff to my Cedric merch masterlist (and personal research)
Well at least he's there. I have seen this art around like 20 times but they remembered that Cedric is a Sofia The First character so that's good I guess
They did him dirty here
AND THIS!!!! THIS ABSOLUTELY THIS!!! MY FAVORITE ONE!!!1!1!!!1!1!!1
YOU GUYS DON'T KNOW HOW LOUD I GASPED, WHEN I TELL YOU THAT I ALMOST STARTED JUMPING AND SCREAMING "YIPEE YIPEEE"
I'll translate it to you this time, so you can understand how I'm feeling right now

Whenever I get asked about my hobbies/interests, I draw a blank.
What exactly do I like to do? What activities I find fun?
I like to write. From a young age, I’d make things up. It didn’t matter if it made sense or not, as long as I got it down on paper. English was one of my favorite subjects in school. Attempts at fanfiction or original stories. There’s something about using my voice to talk to a potential audience.
Drawing has been in my life ever since I could use a crayon. This is another method in creating. Making up what characters would look like. From fan art and fan characters to random people, it’s like being a parent almost. And then showcasing said child to the world.
I like participating in various crafts. This is why art class was one of my favorite subjects in school. Paint, clay, fabric, yarn. It didn’t matter if I became a master at it. It was the joy in creation that was worth it. Learning new things like redoing t-shirts into pillowcases, taking up knitting to make scarves. One of these days, I’d like to learn calligraphy.
Since I like writing, of course I’m going to like reading as well. My favorites from childhood were Stellaluna, Anansi the Spider, Miss Spider, and Bunnicula. When I got older, it went from short stories/novels that were assigned in class to novels I’d pick up because the plot sounded interesting, such as one called The Broccoli Tapes and Zach’s Lie. I remember it was the eighth grade where I was introduced to Edgar Allan Poe. Later, I enjoyed classics such as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Outside of class, I remember one series I was hooked on: The Astonishing Adventures of Fanboy and Goth Girl and it’s sequel, Goth Girl Rising. I would read those over and over. Reading is what further influenced my interests in writing.
When I was a kid, and for a short burst as an adult, I enjoyed baking. It’s fun to follow recipes and see if you will have the same result. What’s also fun was decorating the desserts. One time, my mom even commissioned me a cake for a potluck at her job. When my dad turned 50, I made him a cake and drew a scorpion on it. He liked it so much, it was his Facebook profile for a long while.
If I didn’t include video games in this, something is wrong with me. I grew up with the SNES, my dad bragging that he bought it and several games on sale at a Kmart that was closing. My sisters and I would play as much as we could. Then we upgraded to the Gamecube, the Wii, the Wii U. I eventually got my own 3DS and Switch. If you haven’t realized already, we’re pretty much a Nintendo family. Just the feeling of pride in completing a game, getting emotionally invested in stories, loving the designs and music. Damnit, I love video games.
Anime and manga are a big part of me as well. I vaguely remember watching shows like Sailor Moon, Dragonball Z, and what else was played on Toonami. I really got into it with InuYasha, especially when my best friend and I bonded over that. There’s also the fond memory of watching other anime on YouTube, when it would be mirrored or episodes broken into parts. I can’t remember what my first manga was. My best friend owned a lot of InuYasha volumes, and I vividly remember trying out Fruit Basket in the 8th grade. In high school, I got along with others who had the same interests and even became friends with some.
After typing all that up, I wonder what happened. I rarely do those things anymore. Once in a blue moon. A temporary spark.
But for the most time, I’m just on my phone. Scrolling. Seeing others create, play, or watch, you’d think that’d inspire me. It did the opposite, made me not want to do any of it. I curse myself for not wanting to pick up one hobby and work on it for a bit.
Things happen such as work and family. I feel like I never have time and when I do, I rather not do anything.
Recently, I’ve picked up knitting again. It’s a scarf my mom commissioned years ago. At this point, I don’t think she wants it anymore. I’m determined to finish it, but who knows how long until I put the needles down again.
I hate that I barely do anything I like anymore. These things are what make me, me. And without them, what am I?
An empty shell?

yaku san as The sugar daddy please, nsfw nafw nsfw lemme fuck that
A/N: I’m here after I lose my mind over the new chapter because oh god OH GOD he is THE daddy I’m- I just- You’ll know once you read the thing because I’m not ok...
Warning: not exactly manga spoilers but kinda?, sugar baby-sugar daddy dynamics, nsfw
Word count: 1535
Yaku knew he wanted you the moment your eyes met
he’s the handsome young athlete who frequents the family type restaurant you worked at and you’re the part-time worker who begged for more shifts because you just needed the salary to pay for your tuition
when you shyly looked away after noticing that he had been staring at you, the clear desire to steal another glance obvious as you deliberately turned your back to him, he was hooked
he made a move almost immediately, leaving his card together with a heavy tip when you gave him the check
the card was a formal one but on the back, you see the words that made your heart raced as you stared at the black ink at night, your phone in hand as you shakily punched in those digits
Call me?
he responded quickly after you sent the initial message and making it clear that he was interested in you, asked you if you would like to meet him up for dinner that weekend
you felt small when he showed up at your door in a suit that was probably worth your entire month of salary, feeling ridiculously under-dressed even though you already pulled out your nicest outfit
you shivered when he took your hand, pressing a soft kiss at the back and whispered with a smile, “I know you’ll blow me away, but my my do you look beautiful tonight...”
the place he took you was grand, floor-length windows by the table at a secluded corner of the restaurant and the most prestige part of the city below your feet
it was when he left the table temporarily that you had a moment to look at your surroundings to see just how lavish everything was
he already had everything planned before you even walked through the doors so you had no number to look at, but you didn’t need the figures to know that if it wasn’t for him, you would likely never dine at a place like this ever in your life
the opulence was blinding but most importantly, he was so lovely. Even though it is clear that there is a difference in status between the two of you, he never once made you uncomfortable or came off as arrogant
and the feeling that someone like him wanted you made you bolder and bolder, throwing in a few flirtatious remarks of your own
you did not move away when he put his hand on yours, index finger trailing down your wrist
Blinking your eyes to adjust to the light, you had a sudden moment of panic when you sat up to see the unfamiliar hotel room that you were in.
Until the aftermath of your date slowly reappeared in your head and the feeling of the silky bedding rubbing against your bare legs was starting to make your skin heat up.
His lips were on you the moment the door locked, his hand rough against your waist as he tugged and clawed at the dress you were wearing. The smell of his cologne invaded your sense as he trailed wet kisses down your neck, your hand clawing at his back for leverage as your head went hazy at his rampant assault.
This was all overwhelming. His hand fondling your tits as he yanked down the collar of your dress roughly, the way he didn’t seem to mind fucking you against the door if you hadn’t pulled him towards the couch in the center of the room in between moans, the fact that you had met this man for fewer times than you could count with one hand but yet all you could do was arched your back off to let him slide your panties off as he pushed your legs apart.
Your hands were fumbling to just get his belt off while his hands wander all over your naked body. You whined at the feeling of the metal bands that clad his hand, licking your lips at the thought of them being inside of you but for now, you were simply taken over by the urge for him to just mess you up.
Holding your knees, he hooked your legs around his waist as he lifted your lower body off the couch. Your hand gripped at the couch as he nudged his leaking tip against your sopping folds, your nails digging into the soft velvet of the cushion as he hilted in you. His name was the only thing you could get ahold up as he set a feverish pace, the groans and grunts that fell from his lips making you clench.
Your face was getting hotter and hotter the more you recalled the bits and pieces of last night. God, you could barely even look at the room you were in without thinking of something that you had done on there. He proceeded to try and move your tangled bodies to the bed after you barely regained your breath from the round on the couch, only to get distracted by your pants at his ear midway and slammed you against the window that made up one wall of the room with your chest pressed up against the glass.
Oh god, he fucked you against the window. You sighed into your palms, trying to brush away the visuals of your wrists being held up above your head as he rutted against you.
You let out a soft gasp when you felt something tickling the side of your waist. Yaku pulled you closer to him lazily, peppering soft kisses on your stomach as he chuckled at how you tensed up.
“Morning, princess.”
“Morning...” you said, brushing away the tuft of hair that fell on his face with the tip of your finger as he sat up to kiss you square on the lips. The crisp white blanket fell off of him as he sat up, showing the red marks on his chest that was faded but still very much so visible.
Ah, those were from when you two actually got to the bed and you straddled his lap...
You smiled as you leaned on his shoulder, burying your face at the crook of his neck as his hand slid to the small of your back. It had been a while since you last had such good sleep, the mattresses this hotel uses must be of very good quality.
In fact, you could not even recall the last time you woke up without an alarm- wait...
“What time is it?”
Yaku furrowed his eyebrows when you suddenly flinched away, colour leaving your face when turned the clock on the side table towards you.
“Fuck, I’m late for work.” you groaned, “I’m gonna get into so much trouble for this. God, I’m so sorry-”
Your leg was already dangling off the mattress when you felt a strong grip at your wrist, stopping you from leaping off the bed.
“Do you like that job?”
You paused before answering with a dry chuckle, “I need that job.”
“Quit the job, I’ll take care of you.”
“What?” you muttered. Slowly turning around to look at him, you froze in the realisation that he was absolutely serious.
“I can’t-”
“Hey,” his voice was gentle as he put your hand to cradle his face, turning to his side to speak against your pulse point, “I really like you and I think this can work. Let me help, hm?”
You sucked in a deep breath, unable to ignore how tempting the offer was and the way goosebumps were already forming on your skin at his hot breath on your inner wrist.
“Thank you.”
He beamed, letting go of your hand to hold your shoulder instead. Your breath hitched when he kissed the dip of your collarbone, your arms hooking around his neck immediately.
“No need,” he said with a wink, and you knew you were not leaving the room any time sooner when he trailed down.
he wasn’t lying when he said he will take care of you
not only are your bills handled, he is basically spoiling you at any opportunity that presented itself
nice clothes? fancy lingerie? flying with him whenever he is traveling? you name it
so smitten by the sight of you beneath him in all the lavish things that he bought for you
gold necklace on your neck and nothing else?
red bottom heels and naked from the heel up?
he spoils you but he insists that you’re the one who treats him too well
shows you off at galas and events where you hang off his arm
it’s an arrangement of sorts, sure, but above all he just liked having you around
and all the luxuries aside, you just couldn’t imagine not falling asleep in his arms anymore
you have spent countless nights with him at the fanciest places around the world but the hotel room that you first went to remains a favourite and whenever there’s a special occasion, he books the exact same room that night for celebratory purposes
makes sure to fuck you against the window at least once every time
he also proposed in the exact same room, some time down the line

A Brief Retrospective Look At MVA (In The Anime)
Well. Here we are. Every end of the time is another begun. After what has felt like years of anticipation (mostly because it actually has been years), My Villain Academia has been fully animated. Well, "fully" may be the wrong word here, but that's something I'll get into later.
To honour the end of the arc, I decided to do two things: One, I re-read the entirety of the arc in the manga all in one sitting; Two, I rewatched all five episodes of the anime's adaptation back to back once again. My life is pain and I know not of sleep. Anyway, the reason I did this is because of a little project I proposed to myself back just before the first episode aired; Once MVA was done and dusted, I would go back and give my own retrospective on the whole thing. Because why the hell not, sounds like fun. This will also hopefully be less emotional than my thoughts I shared as the episodes were still airing, but who knows?
So, let's begin. And I wish to start by stating that My Villain Academia is my absolute favourite arc in the manga. It did a lot of things right. It focused entirely on my favourite faction, the villains. It offers a glimpse into their lives and goes a long way in humanising them, particularly Spinner and Shigaraki. It sets up key points for others too, such as Mr. Compress' habit of thinking more about the bigger picture than the others, which would factor into his major reveal during the Paranormal Liberation War and of course the formation of the Front itself. It introduced us to Rikiya Yotsubashi, one of my favourite characters in the manga, even if he honestly peaked in this arc and was never as good again. And it gave us a large-scale, grueling fight for supremacy in which I found myself actively rooting for the League. It is, in my mind, the very best of BNHA, the only arc I would want them to do well in the anime. They could screw up literally everything else and I would be happy if MVA was even just as good as the manga, it didn't even need to be better. I would have been delighted to have an excuse to experience the arc all over again, seeing my favourite moments with the sublime soundtrack and voice acting.
Yeah…
But before I get to that, let us take a little trip of sorts down memory lane to see the road to MVA, what led to it. So, 2021 rolls around. What a fun year. It's just 2020 without the excitement of everything being so uncertain, and frankly it's been really fucking boring as a year. However, BNHA Season Five was announced. In February, we get the first trailer for the upcoming season. It's... It's fine. Obviously, it focuses heavily on the Joint Training Arc (in fact, that is all it shows) and although I despise that arc with a passion, it's not too bad. I had not watched the anime since Overhaul ended, so my plan was I just wouldn't watch JTA and would wait until the big attraction, MVA. And so, Joint Training starts. And it goes on. And on. And on. I checked back almost two months later to discover it still wasn't over yet. Now I found this odd. Joint Training Arc was horrible for many reasons, but the big one was that it dragged on for so long as a result of Horikoshi's health complications, which is by no means his fault. But, surely the anime, which would consistently release on a weekly basis, wouldn't have the issues associated with this. Episodes of BNHA have always encompassed around three to five chapters, and Joint Training's were shorter than usual, so why was it taking more than ten episodes to adapt it?
Very strange, but I didn't question it much. Then, the key visuals released, confirming that MVA was at the very least happening. Great, wonderful. I love it. We've got the whole gang there, seeming like they're in Deika, looks pretty good.
Wait, did I say whole gang? Yeah, my bad, there was someone missing. Spinner. Now, I am not the biggest Spinner fan so I wasn't prepared to riot over his exclusion like I would have been if Compress wasn't in it. But this was starting to get strange. Spinner was the main narrator of MVA. Even if his importance was not on the level of Shigaraki, Twice and Toga, it was certainly more than Dabi and Compress, who did both appear in the art. Why was he excluded? Obviously, I bet you're all having a good old chuckle to yourselves right now because in retrospect, this makes perfect sense now.
Alright, then. I heard from a friend around June time that Joint Training was finally over. Awesome, great, time for the good stuff- why is there a Christmas episode here?
Yes, this was probably what really started to get the alarm bells in my mind going. The Christmas episode- in June. Very, very strange. Also, absolutely no mention of Rikiya, which even if they were reshuffling things, I would have expected him to appear in the episode of Bakugo and Todoroki getting their licenses, since it directly ties in. Concern levels rising, I shrugged it off and waited for next week.
Bam. Major reshuffling. Now, Endeavour Agency comes first, fuck you if you want context for who the hell the PLF are or the significance of Destro's memoirs. This was really starting to worry me now. I told myself that the key visual meant that MVA had to be happening, but it was starting to seem like the villains were being shafted. A fact not helped by the new OP.
Look, I'm sorry. I don't mean to complain or whine, but season five's second OP is just bad. The music is fine, I have no problem there. But the visuals are just awful. Not only is there an extended focus on that stupid bloody trio of Midoriya, Bakugo and Todoroki, not only is there more screentime given to characters who don't appear in MVA or EA than the main cast of the former, but the animation itself is just so stiff and lacking. It had potential, but the visuals are the worst out of any recent anime opening I've seen in a good few years and this was what got me really panicking.
Boom, a beach episode smack in the middle of Endeavour Agency to promote the upcoming movie. Boom, adapting two chapters per episode during EA. Boom, the Shirakumo episode, which I always thought was part of the War Arc and not EA. But finally, mercifully, the title leaks came and it was revealed that episode 20 of season five would be the start of MVA.
20. Out of 25. And it was pretty obvious that they weren't going to end the season with MVA, so really, up to 24. Ohhh no…
But hey, I'm an optimist sometimes. I was excited to just finally be clear of all this nonsense and get to the real good stuff. Hell, in preparation, I watched the entirety of the season up to that point. I finally realised why JTA took so long and it's one of the most depressing things I've ever learned, in a bad way. Were all those flashbacks really necessary? EA was okay, as someone who as a manga reader, already had the necessary context for the PLF stuff. The beach episode, I watched half of, got too bored and skipped the rest of. And you know what, I liked the Shirakumo chapters. They weren't as good in the anime, but it was nice to see.
And then, finally, in comes episode one of My Villain Academia, on a cold, dark August morning. I even bought Crunchyroll Premium to watch it as soon as possible, I was excited. All the messing around, all the crap, it was finally over and the time had come to enjoy what this season was really all about.
I can now safely say why Bones kept pushing back MVA, because if I was them, I would be embarrassed to show this.
No, that's not fair. I promised I wouldn't get too snarky, so let's reek things back in. As a whole, MVA has been… fine. Just fine. Not good enough to justify the bullshit, but not horrendous (mostly.) In fact, right now, I'll give a ranking of the episodes, my worst to best:
5) Episode One
4) Episode Two
3) Episode Three
2) Episode Five
1) Episode Four
Yeah. So, there's a clear pattern here, that things more or less got better as time went on. From just straight up bad, to still not great, to alright, to the final two episodes being what I would comfortably call good. This is not a good look. I'm sorry, but Episode One, an episode that I just called bad, is still one of the season's best in spite of that. That spells out awful things for this season as a whole. But what exactly made this such a disaster?
Well, cut content is the big thing. MVA in the anime cuts out:
The League's battle with the CRC
Their struggle with poverty
The sushi joke setup
All of Spinner's character
All of Rikiya's character, including most mentions of Detnerat and Miyashita
Fairly integral pieces of Skeptic's character
Most of Giran's integrity and bravery
This doesn't look too bad at first. It could be far worse. We got basically everything else from the arc, so what? Well, I would already be annoyed about all of these cuts, but the issue is that they cause a knock on effect. Without the establishment of the League's poverty, the payoff of Toga's duffle coat now makes no sense. Without the setup of Spinner's characterisation, his battle with Hanabata now feels hollow. Rikiya's surrender to the League now makes even less sense, as his love of human life and desire to cause no more death is completely non-existent. The first time Rikiya being a CEO is mentioned is in the closing minutes of the arc. The sushi scene is hamfisted into a two second flashback just so that the payoff makes some sort of sense, but again, it is hollow without it being at the start (this is also the first mention of the League's poverty and it literally happens just as they are freed from it.) Can you see how these little seemingly unimportant cuts spiral into bigger problems? I would have been pissed even if they hadn't caused some tremendous cascades, but the fact that they did just makes this from a subjective issue to an objective one.
Yes. They did some things well. Toga's backstory is mostly intact, SMP is just as satisfying as the manga, Tenko's backstory is one of the best things the anime has ever done, the awakening is very well done, I adore the PLF formation as much as I did in the manga. Everything important is intact, but as I keep saying, you cannot just keep the bare minimum and expect it to work. How about in the next arc, they decide to cut everything involving Bakugo out, and only keep him jumping in front of Midoriya because it's the only absolutely necessary thing he does in the arc? People would be pissed, and it's the same thing that's happening here. It's a problem, it's not just a bad adaptation, it leads to bad storytelling in general.
The animation. Now, I do not believe this is a be all, end all. BNHA's anime is never going to look as gorgeous as Horikoshi's art, that is a fact and I do not begrudge them for that. They have a week to draw hundreds upon hundreds of frames, it's not a process that lends itself well to good looks and the animators and artists do their best with what they have. This does not change the fact that it is extremely hit or miss. Some things, Tenko's backstory in particular, look fantastic. Other things, mostly every action scene, make me laugh at how bad they can look and some things, particularly Twice and Re-Destro's hideous designs in the anime, make me cringe. The lighting is also an issue. Garaki's lab looked fantastic, but every other scene is just boring mid-afternoon with dull, basic lighting. I don't expect huge detail, but sometimes, it fails to achieve competency and as an extremely popular show, I don't think that's okay. I don't blame the animators, I blame the higher ups. And while I wouldn't mind the poor animation and art in an MVA that at least has all the story content, this does not have that and so I am even harsher than I would have been.
MVA was rushed. That's not up for debate. It took forever to get to it and once it came, things moved so quickly that they gave me whiplash, with no time to think or lament. Now, this could be attributed to the story structure of the arc, which is essentially a series of big fights, and it just isn't as bad in the manga because I can stop at any time to catch my breath. But I think it's worth noting that the anime at least highlights these issues. Curious dies in the same episode where she first appears, really driving home how pointless she was in the end. Episode Two alone tries to cover everything from the journey to Deika up until Jin finding Toga's body. That's a lot of content to fit in one twenty minute period and it was bound to feel messy in the end. I will say that, much like everything aside from the animation, this did get better as time went on, with episodes three, four and five adapting more reasonable amounts of content, compared to one giving us almost nothing and two giving us too much.
At the end of the day, that was it. The show's over. MVA has been closed in the anime. It will never be given a chance to improve, to go from just fine to anything even close to the manga. Why did this happen? I don't think we'll ever truly know. Some blame the new movie, others the studio's lack of faith in the villains, and there are those who say that it's just how fate turned out. I personally think it's a combination of all of these things. Without the movie, that beach episode wouldn't exist, giving more time to MVA, without the studio's hesitation, we'd perhaps get stuff like an actual good OP and perhaps some more general hype for it (I mean, MVA didn't even get a trailer.) Whatever the reason is, we got what we got. My verdict is something that's very overplayed as of late, but seriously, just read the manga with the fantastic soundtrack playing in the background. The anime's adaptation of MVA is not worth the time investment, when you could read the manga in roughly the same length of time and get more content, a more coherent plot and beautiful artwork.
So, what may come next for Season Six? I don't know. Season Five has definitely been one of the most unpopular seasons in the anime, with a lot of people speaking out against it, but this mostly seems to come from the Western fanbase, so it's up in the air if Bones will learn from their mistakes. Since they'll have a full season to do presumably the War and Rouge Deku arcs, then I feel like they'll put on a better show. But we just don't know. Spinner had his spotlight stolen this time around, will Compress suffer the same fate in Season Six? Dabi and Toga will probably be handled well, since they have inexplicably high amounts of popularity, but with his own lack of recognition rivalling Spinner's, I can see Sako ending up much the same way. Time will tell, I suppose.

Living Together (MatsuKamu)
Wrote short 1K post-hpa/non-despair/wheeeee MatsuKamu as per request. I’m probably going to tack this to the Matsuda anthology on Ao3 but not right now because it’s Saturday.
But yeah. Enjoy. <3
Somehow, he should’ve known that even graduation wouldn’t be an escape. Sure, he was stupid enough to think otherwise at first, and how fucking humiliating the whole ceremony had been. He was so relieved that his face fucking hurt from all the smiling. Junko was never going to let him live that shit down, but at the time he hadn’t cared. He had been too happy to care. Too happy to think.
Head in the fucking clouds, all he could think about was what laid beyond the damned academy. He was so stupidly excited to buy a place overseas. The states, specifically, to continue his medical training and learning. Oh how stupidly fucking excited he had been to get as far away from Japan as he could. To start a new life, a new everything—to get that much closer to being the best damn doctor to have ever walked this godforsaken planet.
His desperation from before as well as his despair—he had been eager to turn his back on it. To escape it.
But, of fucking course, escape was impossible. Sins clung to your fucking soul, as they always said. But, rather than confronting them in the eternal damnation that was sure to follow his death... It was instead in his new fucking living room.
“How spacious,” Matsuda’s sins remarked. They looked around and settled on the couch. Like they belonged there. “Yes, this will do for the both of us.”
And Kamukura Fucking Izuru gave a nod of approval. He wasn’t bothered by anything. Not by Matsuda’s stupefied silence, not by Matsuda’s face distorted from shock, not even by the deafening clatter of Matsuda’s newly gotten house keys against the tiles.
“Everything is of acceptable quality and this area is quite safe,” Kamukura went on to say. “You have picked well, Matsuda Yasuke.”
“What...the actual...fuck...”
“Please take good care of me,” Kamukura dully added. As if this served as a satisfactory explanation. As if Matsuda was going to accept this readily and happily.
He did not.
In fact, he fainted from shock.
--
He wakes up sprawled on the couch, a stringy long-haired demon looming over him.
“I will stay with you from now on,” the demon declared, and there was nothing to do but let out an agonized yet resigned groan.
“Urgh...”
--
At first, Kamukura Izuru was little more than a cat. Just there. Just existing. Just staring at him. But sometimes, he’ll just be in some other room the entire day. Occasionally, Kamukura Izuru would walk into his study, but by the time Matsuda rose his head to acknowledge the other—yep. Kamukura was already gone. Didn’t even close the door behind him. Dick.
He can’t even be bothered to cook—! Not that I want an Ultimate House Spouse...
...former Ultimate? He wondered.
Kamukura Izuru was designed to be an Ultimate first and foremost. So, then, why...?
I guess if he wanted to leave then HPA couldn’t exactly stop them. They sunk so much wealth into that investment only for him to get bored and wander off—can’t say those fuckers don’t deserve this.
Still, as he typed away, he found himself wondering further.
Of all the places to go...
Kamukura Izuru peered into his study again. Looking every bit like a mild-mannered but still intimidating spirit. Seriously. In another world, Matsuda would’ve had his guts ripped out by now. Instead, Kamukura Izuru is just staring at him again.
“Hm.”
Well. Responding to emails was getting pretty fucking dull. So.
“I want to go somewhere,” Matsuda announced loudly, stretching his arms out as he does. “Let’s go.”
Kamukura Izuru ducks out quickly. By the time Matsuda gets his coat and some worn-down flip-flops, Kamukura Izuru is already waiting loyally by the door.
Kamukura Izuru has also stolen his shoes. The ones he usually wears for work.
“Guess we gotta do some shopping,” Matsuda gripes and gets zero response from the shadow trailing after him as he leaves. “You’ll behave, right?”
The shadow doesn’t so much as ripple.
--
“Does anything catch your eye?”
“Boring.”
“Fucking figures,” he swears in Japanese, mindful of the kids loitering about nearby. One of them keeps tugging at their parents’ clothes and pointing at Kamukura. The children are quickly ushered away, and Kamukura Izuru is regarded with nothing short of distrust and disdain.
Kamukura doesn’t pay them any mind, but Matsuda’s frown can’t help but deepen.
That bad mood persevered as he bought whatever clothes on clearance that would fit. If Kamukura didn’t care, he shouldn’t care, either.
He told himself that, but the mood never improved.
“Urgh.”
Even picking up books didn’t lift it.
“Not sure if I like these as much as manga,” he mutters darkly, flipping through a comic. “If we’re able to return to the country, maybe we should visit Akihabara...or would you rather Shibuya? Or how about Kichijoji?”
“Boring,” is Kamukura Izuru’s response.
What an amazing investment Ultimate Hope turned out to be. The encapsulation of human capability and talent can’t even be bothered to hold a conversation.
Matsuda sighed.
--
“Here.”
So, in addition to clothes, Matsuda bought a bunch of useless apparel. Puzzles, coloring books, games, comics, the works. All of which he dumped on a desk set up in the corner, very carefully detached from his personal shelves.
“If you’re going to live with me, it’d help if you...lived,” he tells Kamukura Izuru. “It’s either these or some recreational activities.”
“Why is this necessary?” Kamukura asked, which, hey, was a step above just dismissing everything as boring. So.
“You followed me for something, right?” Matsuda shot back. “If you cared about necessities, you wouldn’t have sought me out specifically. And with how smart you are, you would’ve predicted my reaction being along these lines.” He takes one rubik’s cube and shoves it into Kamukura’s hand. “Mix this up so that it takes me longer than ten minutes to solve it.”
Kamukura starts before he can finish. Likely because he knew already what to expect. And because he knew—
“If this is your way of saying I need to actually atone to you personally, it’s fine.” Matsuda swallowed. “I thought you’d be fine if I left you behind, but apparently I was wrong. I’m sorry for that. Let’s do our best together...or whatever.”
Kamukura just hands him the cube. Without another word, Kamukura busies himself with one of the more advanced puzzles. Specifically the 5000 piece that seemed to be of various carnations.
Snorting, Matsuda supposed that was that.
(It later turned out that somehow, without him noticing, Kamukura Izuru had swapped a few stickers to make the puzzle unsolvable. It took Matsuda over an hour to figure that out and he was beyond pissed.)

Remote 10 Dance Ball
I know this is coming way late (as in, 3 months after it occurred!), but I’d always been planning to write up a report about the Real 10 Dance event that took place shortly after vol. 6’s release in Japan. Before I get into the explanation of what exactly this is under the cut, enjoy this promo image that ticket holders were able to print out at Japanese convenience stores (mine had to be printed by friends who live there and then scanned to me)
The Real 10 Dance is a series of events that have taken place over the past few years featuring real life pros performing routines inspired by the manga, meaning that most of the dances feature male-male couples (though they all have female partners in their regular careers, for these performances they dance together, and the women are given a group number to perform). The most recent live event took place in September 2019 shortly after vol. 5’s release, and there was another planned for 2020 in Osaka, but it was delayed and eventually completely canceled due to Covid restrictions. Wanting to still put on the event in some form, they later announced that it would take place virtually, and would be branded as the Remote 10 Dance Ball. For the cost of 1,000 yen, viewers could watch a stream of the event as many times as they pleased from the time it went live on March 20 until the viewing deadline 72 hours later. Unlike the in person events, there were no merchandise buying opportunities, but there was the option of paying additional 1,000 yen tips to either the performers, the production committee, or Inouesatoh herself. Choosing any of these options would give that ticket holder access to a code to print the postcard shown above, as well as a link to view a 17 minute making-of video of the event.
Before I get into the rundown, The Real 10 Dance Twitter account posted a preview video a couple weeks before the event, which you can watch if you’d like to see some of the action instead of just still images (and the only ones I’ll share here are those that were posted publicly, since they were pretty adamant about no screenshotting/recording of the event…not gonna lie, I did attempt to screenshot a couple parts, but due to the shaky streaming quality, the official photos are much better than what I was able to capture anyway :P) Also, I only made bare minimum notes while I was watching this (and was drinking hard cider), so I’ll give as much detail as I can remember, but there are definitely things I’ll have forgotten by now.
The show started off with one of the female pros giving a demonstration of how to apply makeup for competitions. After this came an introductory show with all of the participants dancing to the opening theme from La La Land.
Next up was some of the pros talking about the characteristics of their costumes, such as the Latin outfits having features like illusion netting to make their limbs look longer, and fringe to create movement.
After this, some of the pros gave tours of the dance schools that they run, which also served as advertisements for those who may be interested in signing up for lessons.
Then came some step demonstrations, showing specific panels from the manga and then describing how to perform the moves. This included Al and Suzuki’s rumba walk from chapter 18, and the throwaway oversway from the chapter 4 scene where Sugiki turns Suzuki into a princess. For the oversway, they performed the move a few different times, using prompts such as “do it like the world’s about to end” to show how the same move can feel very different depending on the emotion behind it.
This was followed by an interview with former standard world champion Christopher Hawkins. The interview was conducted in Japanese, as he is fluent in the language (Inouesatoh tweeted about him being the inspiration to have Norman speak some Japanese in the story, though she acknowledged that Chris’ abilities are far above Norman’s very basic phrases). It included two interviewers asking questions that were submitted by Inouesatoh and her editor. It started off with some basic talk about the process of training and getting prepared for competitions, then moved on to topics like whether he had any competition related superstitions/habits, such as how some dancers will have a pair of lucky underwear they always wear when competing. He said he had a specific order to how he would button his shirt and attach his cufflinks (as in, not just going straight up or down, but skipping over some and coming back to them), and if he didn’t do this specific routine it made him feel like the competition would go poorly. After telling this story, he laughed and said that he’s never told anyone about this before, so it was definitely an interesting question. Then came probably the most important question for fans of 10 Dance: since the series centers around men dancing together, what sort of experience does Chris have dancing with other men? (Funnily enough, for some reason, the male interviewer first asked this question in Japanese, then rather enthusiastically asked the question in English as well lol). Chris said that of course he’s danced with male students a lot in the course of teaching them, but outside of that also had times where he would train in the female role so he knew how it felt to be the following partner, and therefore could become a better lead. He mentioned some performance he did with another high level male dancer that was pretty amazing (forgive me, I didn’t catch the name at all, or even whether he was a standard or Latin specialist), which caused the female interviewer to joke about writing a love story about the two of them.
Then came the main draw of the event, the dance show! I’ll include the song, dance style, and an image from each performance below.
One Way or Another by Blondie, jive
Lady Marmalade (I believe it was the Moulin Rouge movie version), ladies group cha-cha
Half of Me by Ken Hirai, rumba (I don’t know if it’s just because it made me think of the melancholy rumba shown on vol. 6’s cover, but this made me both want to cry and watch it multiple times over, definitely my favorite because apparently I like to punish myself with sadness :P)
All of Me by Michael Bublé, foxtrot (this was filmed both in the performance space and out on the streets in one of the locations used in chapter 33, as shown in this video from one chilly looking morning. Also, this dance featured a leader switch partway through!)
If I Can’t Have You by Shawn Mendes, cha-cha
Finale with all participants to It’s Time to Dance from “The Prom” musical
Last up was a virtual art exhibition featuring 17 sketches by Inouesatoh, including the most powerful sexual stimulant in the known universe, Bathrobe Sugiki.
Overall, I was very happy to get the chance to witness this event. Normally, the number of people would be limited to just those who were in Japan and able to purchase tickets before they sold out, but this remote version allowed a much larger number of people from all over the world to watch (I bought my ticket not even knowing if it would be region locked or not, but thankfully it wasn’t). I hope that the world situation improves and they can put on the event live and in-person again (even better if I could somehow find a way to attend when that happens!), but I think this was a great alternative, and probably a good way to make some revenue in a time when the ability to stage events is limited. The price of 1,000 yen was an incredibly good deal for all the content that was presented (and you better believe I slammed an extra 1,000 straight to Inouesatoh; the only merch I’ve been able to buy is secondhand, and while this satisfies my needs as a collector, it unfortunately doesn’t provide any support to the author). If real life performances are still a long way off and they decide to do a virtual one again, you bet your ass I’ll be right there in the (imaginary) front row!

Title. Burnt Out, Part Two
Pairing. Suna Rintaro x Fem!Reader
Summary. In which he’s intoxicated and opens up about things he never got the chance to. Part two of Burnt Out, Suna Rintaro’s point of view.
Warnings. Excessive intake of alcohol, cursing, and manga spoilers.
Suna Rintaro started dating his long-term girlfriend L/N Y/N in highschool. She was the type who kept to herself and had a small, yet golden, circle of friends. She got along well with his volleyball team because she had a great personality, and she went along with teasing their friend Miya Atsumu.
He met her when he was in preschool and he made her cry because he accidentally took her chuupet. His mom made him apologize and they bonded over a whole pack his mom bought for them to share. A few years later, he realized he liked her in his last year of middle school, when he got upset over losing his last competition with the team and she was there to cheer him up with a pack of chuupet.
He admits he’s not one for romantic gestures, but his feelings for her were always sincere. Growing up, Suna lacked the energy nor the personality to make much friends, so he was always relieved knowing she was there. They grew up together, and that’s something Suna would never replace. He associates his childhood with her and their love for chuupets.
Throughout their relationship he tried his best to show he appreciated her. Though what he liked best about her was that he didn’t need to try. He always assumed she knew and she understood his actions. After joining a pro team he got a bit busier, but he assumed she would understand.
“Quit assuming Y/N-chan’s gonna stick around for your shit. Sure, she’s always been the best of us for understanding your...detachment to everyone else, but she ain’t a saint. Get ‘yer shit together or she might just finally up and leave.” Atsumu once told him, but Suna tries not to dwell in anything the piss haired dumbass tells him. But what he said was true.
Which is why Suna decided to gamble. He told his teammates and the twins that if he won the next three consecutive games and the team placed top three in the league, he’d finally propose. Osamu told him not to gamble with life, his teammates told him not to blame them if they lose, and Atsumu rejoiced and called him brilliant. Suna’s not sure how he feels about their response, but he’s willing to risk it. Because it’s for her.
After the third win Suna went with his team to celebrate, mostly because he was in a good mood and because he was nervous yet excited at the same time. But then she called.
What if she found the ring he loosely hid in his sock drawer? What if she thinks it’s for someone else? Oh god, what if she thinks he’s cheating on her? What if-
“Actually-” “By the way-”
He lets her go first because he cares like that. But suddenly he wishes he didn’t.
“I don’t think we’re in love anymore.” Oh. With that one sentence all the pride and joy brimming up his body is flushed down by sorrow and dread. Color drains from his face and he feels like he’d stopped breathing. Suddenly all those “what-ifs” didn’t sound so bad anymore.
“I’ll pack my bags while you’re at work tomorrow.” Suna ends the call there because he’s scared she might hear his life crashing down through the phone. Still a bit shocked, Suna lets his body slide down the dingy alleyway. No tears fall because he’s not an emotional person like that, but the turmoil in his head makes him itch for a distraction.
He hears the loud cheers of his teammates inside the bar and finds the perfect solution.
-
“Rintaro-kun, get ahold of yourself!” Komori Motoya whisper-yells at his intoxicated teammate. Said intoxicated teammate is currently stumbling over his own two feet as he tries to walk in a straight line with one arm slung over Komori’s shoulders.
Komori mumbles a few strings of curses as he drags the man to the elevator. “Why did you even drink this much?” He asks no one in particular, mainly because the man in question was too busy laughing at his own reflection in the elevator mirror.
Komori remembers that MSBY has an away game, which probably means they’re all together in a hotel or probably running late with practice, and decides to call Sakusa for help. Much needed help, as he hears another groan from Suna. If he pukes - no, he won’t even think about it. Shaking his head, Komori pulls out his phone and dials a number. It rings four times, before his cousin’s cranky voice mumbles out, “Hello?”
“Sakusa! Is Miya still around?” Komori urgently grunts out, simultaneously hoisting up his teammate who’s currently being dragged down by gravity and alcohol. “What could you possibly need from that moron?” He can imagine the scowl on his cousin’s face, but he decides to focus on more important matters.
Like the idiot now hanging loosely on his shoulders. Suna’s a bit taller, so Komori has to drag his feet through the floor with one arm and keep his phone pressed to his ear with one hand. “Tell him it’s about Rintaro-kun.” There’s rustling and the sound of the phone being handed off to someone else, and then Atsumu’s croaking out a, “What-,” obvious that he was awoken from his sleep.
Komori’s not in the right state of mind to feel any remorse, so he gets to the point. “Miya, do you know Rintaro-kun’s girlfriend’s number?”
“Why?” Atsumu grumbles, still half asleep. The sound of a boisterous laughter through the phone snaps him awake, though, as he recognizes the familiar sound. “Holy shit!” He shoots up, sheets strewn on the floor. Sakusa looks like he’s about to commit a crime.
“Komori, listen - whatever he does, make sure you get it on camera!” (Komori hears Sakusa mumble, “You’re a shitty person,” and Atsumu bark back with a, “Shut ‘yer trap, Omi-kun!”) Choosing to ignore his idiocy, Komori urges on, “Do you know her number or not?”
“I mean yeah, but if ‘Taro’s that drunk then I’m pretty there’s problems with Y/N-chan.” Komori feels a vein pop, both because Suna’s weight is really starting to push down on his shoulders, and because Atsumu’s proving himself to be pretty useless in this situation.
“I don’t care anymore! Can you just text me her number so I can drop this idiot off?” Komori huffs. Atsumu hums and hangs up, seconds later texting him Y/N’s number. He hands Sakusa (who’s now unsurprisingly wearing gloves) back his phone and plops back down to his comfy hotel room bed, remembering to check on his friend the next morning.
-
Komori finally makes it to the address sent to him by Suna’s girlfriend after about thirty minutes of dragging the said man through crowds and avoiding the judgemental looks from people passing by.
He wastes no time in pressing the doorbell before he’s met face to face with the girlfriend-in-question. Her eyes are red and puffy, and she looks about as bad as Suna does, though a lot more sober. Miya was right. He thinks to himself. Relationship problems, huh?
“Ah, thank you for bringing him home safely, Komori-san!” She bows. Her voice is strangled and hoarsed, but the politeness is still there. “I’m so sorry for bothering you, I can take him from here.” Y/N holds out her arms, and perhaps because of how heartbroken she looks, Komori gently shakes his head.
“I can set him down on the couch. He’s not exactly lightweight, you see.” She simply nods, not having enough energy to go back and forth over the matter. “Thank you so much.” She says with another bow. Once Suna’s bodyweight is off his shoulders and he can feel his full body again, Komori waves his hand to show that it was no big deal.
He silently hopes he’s not overstepping, before mumbling on his way out, “I hope you two work it out.” She responds with a weak smile and another bow before locking the door behind him.
Finally alone again, Y/N steps towards her now-ex boyfriend, and decides to help him feel more comfortable by removing his shoes. Suna complies by grumbling something that can’t be understood, so Y/N continues with cleaning him up.
“Sit up real quick, ‘Taro.” She whispers. Suna obeys and sits up with his eyes still closed. His movement releases a whiff of beer and his usual cologne. Y/N has to hold her breath because of the pungent scent, but she continues to care for him with gentle hands.
Suna opens his eyes and though everything is still blurry, he could easily recognize her anywhere. He grabs hold of one of wrist that was busy yanking off his coat from his body and pulls her closer to him. She slightly falls down on where he’s seated on the couch, but she catches herself before she could completely crash down on him.
“Hi.” Suna mumbles into her neck.
“Hey. Let’s get you into some more comfortable clothes, ‘Taro.” Y/N tries to pry herself off him, but his hold on her tightens and now she finds herself engulfed into his chest with two strong arms wrapping around her frame. “Don’t wanna. Just wanna stay here.”
“Okay.” Y/N decides there’s point arguing with an intoxicated man and allows herself to melt into his hold.
But then she remembers their conversation from earlier, and her cruel decision of breaking it off without an explanation. Guilt overwhelms her and soon she attempts to pry herself off again, and this time she’s successful. Suna whines.
“Come back.” His voice is an unfamiliar pitch higher and he’s making grabby motions at her with his arms. “Try to sober up a little first, okay?” Y/N calms him down before heading into the kitchen to grab a glass of water.
It only took ten seconds for Suna to follow suit, albeit still drunk and wobbly, but he is able to hold himself up until he grabs hold of her from behind, her warmth heating up his frozen body once again. “Don’t leave me.” Y/N’s not sure if he means now, or in general. Does he even remember their phone call?
Nontheless, he isn’t in his right mind, and Y/N doesn’t want to say anything that might cause him to react wildly. “Okay, let’s sit down though, yeah?” Suna nods, and his hair tickles the back of her neck. They awkwardly shuffle through the kitchen back to the couch, where Suna continues to snuggle into her chest. Y/N finds herself combing her hand through his tangled hair, somehow finding comfort in this rare display of affection.
They stay like that for a couple minutes, Y/N sitting awkwardly down on the couch and Suna’s overgrown body slumped over hers as he clings onto her waist for dear life. Y/N decides not to beat around the bush and tries to clear the elephant in the room.
“Did this happen because of what I said?” It’s a stupid question, and Y/N knows the answer to it, but she doesn’t know why she needs to hear it coming from him. Suna only nods, not once breaking away from his hold on her.
“Do you want to talk about it now?” Y/N offers. Maybe, if he’s being this uncharacteristically clingy right now, then he’d be more comfortable with opening up.
“Don’t leave me.” Suna mumbles again, this time Y/N can feel the desperation in his voice.
“I won’t. Not right now, at least. But we need to talk about it.” Y/N’s hand is still combing through his dark locks, and for a second she thinks he fell asleep because of it, but he speaks up again.
“If I ignore it will you take back what you said?” Suna tries to bargain. Y/N lets herself laugh, though it comes out choked because of how dry her throat was from crying. The sound however, makes Suna lift his head up from its place on her chest, his chin resting just above her breasts as he stares straight into her eyes.
“I’m being serious right now.” Everything about him is delirious, but his eyes scream that she should listen to what he’s about to say.
“I don’t know what changed, but I’m sorry if it’s because of something I did.” Y/N can easily tell that he’s just starting to sober up, but not enough for him to totally pull away or stop talking yet. “It was because of something Atsumu said,” She finds herself confessing. Perhaps she hasn’t totally sobered up from the bottle of wine she finished a few hours ago.
“That bastard.”
“- back in highschool.” Suna shows no remose towards what he said. Highschool school or now, Atsumu is still Atsumu, and he said what he said.
“When you guys fought over who’s fault it was when you lost a game, he told me I was dating a rock.” Suna tilts his head in confusion (and Y/N tries not to make it too obvious that she’s getting ticklish every time he moves). “A rock?” He grumbles with a scowl on his face. (He totally looks like an angry puppy right now, but Y/N decides that this isn’t the right time to gush over it).
“And then I got a wedding invitation from Mika and Daishou-kun. I drank a little too much too, so my thoughts just spiraled down negatively.” Y/N sighs as she relives the emotional turmoil she went through that evening. “I let my emotions and something Atsumu said years ago get the best of me, and I really hurt you. I’m sorry, ‘Taro.” Y/N doesn’t notice the tears streaming down her face as she cups his face in her hands. Suna leans into her touch and hums.
“I think I can understand what Atsumu said, though.” Suna mumbles out. He gets up from his comfortable spot, and Y/N feels herself missing his warmth right away.
And then he heads into the bedroom, much more sober now, and Y/N stares at him him out of curiosity. He comes back out within seconds with something in his hand and sets it down on the coffee table as he sits back down next to her. Y/N gasps.
“I told myself that I was gonna do this after winning three consecutive games. I think I was gonna do it even if we didn’t, though.” Y/N switches her gaze between her lover and the velvet box that contained a ring.
The ring itself was simple, yet elegant. There’s a single big diamond sitting in the middle of a silver band, and its beauty makes up for its simplicity. The ring is true to Suna’s character, though she suspects some of his friends had a say in picking the ring (there’s no way Suna would have been able to decide on it himself).
“This wasn’t how I planned for it to go down, but I feel like if I don’t do it now, I might not get another chance.” There’s a certain sincerity in his eyes and desperation in his voice that makes Y/N’s heart ache, both out of happiness and guilt for what she did earlier that night.
“I know I’m not gonna be the best husband - hell, I wasn’t even close to being the best boyfriend - but what I do know for sure is that there’s no one else I’d want to be with other than you.” Suna grabs the box from the table and gets down on one knee in front of the couch, where she’s still seated with tears streaming down her face.
“I promise I’ll try my best to open up more. I won’t let you get bothered by something that idiot said in highschool again, and I’ll make sure you’ll never have to question my love again.” Suna finishes with a smile, “So, Y/N, will you marry me?”
Y/N doesn’t trust her voice so she chooses to nod vigorously instead, launching herself into his welcoming arms. He falls back from the impact but his hold on her is still tight. Everything is in place again, and the figurative fire between them sparks again. If they tried hard enough, even a burnt out match can still be relit.
“Wanna mess around and pretend we broke up because of what Atsumu said?”
A/N. Also another re-uplod. Thank you for reading! You can tell I was pushing my ‘komori is team mom’ agenda bc I love my boy. Anyways, sorry if the ending got a bit cheesy but I don’t really know how to write it without making it cheesy - chuu

The warm sunlight woke you up as it was hitting your eye and immediately afterwards the smell of coffee hit your nose, making you sit up in your bed.
You yawned and stretched a bit before getting up and going into the bathroom to get ready for the day.
Usually it would be a normal day of work for you and your roommate Sugawara, but you were lucky to be able to take the day off today.
You felt yourself getting giddy as you thought about the events of today. Finally you´d see your old high school friends again! It´s been way too long and you couldn´t wait to meet them in person after all these years. You made sure to stay in contact but still, talking on the telephone wasn´t the same as meeting in person.
Sure, you former third years met up as often as you could, occasionally some of the others would join but it was simply impossible for your schedules to work out for all of you. And the reason for your meeting was something you were beyond excited for: it was the game between the Adlers and the Black Jackals, teams consisting of some of your old acquaintances as well.
“I can´t believe Shoyo is back!” you went downstairs in your pajamas to greet Sugawara who was just reading the newspaper.
“Yeah me too. And that he made it into the team after the years he was gone… I can´t wait to see him” he smiled at you and handed you some breakfast.
You thanked him and joined him, immediately starting to eat. This whole day felt so sentimental, it was weird not to stand on the sidelines anymore, it felt so wrong not to calm Hinata, Yachi and Yamaguchi down before the match. You missed being a part of this, but more than anything you were so proud of Hinata to make his debut in such a renowned team.
When he told you that he met Oikawa in Argentina you were quite surprised, he really did come around, yet something about this whole match didn´t sit right with you.
It was unfamiliar, even uncomfortable to see Kageyama in the opposing team. They once were the duo that always thought of something new and crazy, always up for the unexpected, and now they were rivals.
Bokuto had promised you that his new setter Atsumu was just as good, but you had to see that for yourself.
“I´m so excited to see Daichi and Asahi as well, it´s been too long. I´m so glad we´re able to watch this game with our friends” you exclaimed, making Suga laugh slightly.
“I´m just glad we worked so well and got done grading so quick, imagine having to work today” he sighed. You worked at the same school as teachers while Asahi was studying abroad and Daichi became a police officer.
It truly was amazing what had happened ever since you graduated.
College was absolute chaos, Suga and you were roommates ever since you could remember, but managing the work for the classes, the essays, the practical semester, the jobs to pay the rent… it was stressful.
Somehow being out of college and finally teaching was way more relaxing than college itself.
And now you would see Hinata and Kageyama going up against each other, it was terribly exciting, yet you didn´t want any of them to lose. It was like you raised them after all.
Well, you were just a mere manager then, but still, you got quite attached to those two and were pretty sad when you graduated with the others.
“Don´t ruin the mood, Suga!” you whined and he apologetically raised his hands in the air.
You really didn´t want to imagine the mountain of paper work that usually waited for you in the office.
“We should probably get going to get good seats” you reminisced and Suga nodded.
You went back up to your room and went to your drawer, planning to just pull out whatever and throw it on as you usually did.
But something made you stop. This oh so familiar fabric, the scent was long gone and yet you swore you could still smell him on it.
Without thinking about it, you put on the hoodie that Kuroo once had given to you when you were still together.
The thought of him made you smile, yet it left a bittersweet sting in your heart. You really thought you were meant to be, your relationship endured all of high school and even the first year of college, but that was it. With him being in Tokyo and you in Miyagi, the distance was just too much. And with all the exams and studying you couldn´t even talk that much.
It made you really sad, that was already in the past but you still weren´t over him quite yet. It made you feel pathetic.
But was it really so wrong to want something that you didn´t even fight for? Neither of you did, you just accepted the fact that the distance was too great, which was stupid. You thought too much about it, about him. You only knew what he was doing through Hinata who got the information from Kenma.
Did you even have the right to be in his life anymore? If he wanted you to be, he´d reach out.
But maybe he thought the same, yet you didn´t want to text him, fearing to annoy him in some way.
Wearing his hoodie felt as if he was here with you, you swore you could still smell him on the fabric, but that was hardly possible. Maybe you just liked to imagine that. As you liked to imagine his hands around your waist, his head nuzzled in your neck as he told you how unfair it was that his hoodie looked so much better on you.
With one last sad smile you joined Suga in the car to drive to the stadium.
You were lucky since you left your home early and got a nice parking lot that was near the stadium.
You basically ran all the way to the entrance to see the others, Suga following close behind.
Neither him or you could contain your smile as you saw Asahi and Daichi waving over at you, once you finally made your way through to them, you initiated a big group hug.
This.
You missed this, this feeling, their laughter echoed in your heart, almost bringing tears to your eyes, never did you want to think about losing touch or losing them, it would be too devastating.
As you walked in, you first bought some onigiri from Osamu and caught up with each other.
“Isn´t that Kuroo´s sweater?” Daichi pointed out once you all sat down, you luckily managed to get good seats.
The question made your heart sting, you had no right to wear it, yet you did, chasing after something long gone.
“Yeah, it is… it´s weird isn´t it?” you softly said with a sad expression on your face.
“I don´t think it is, you broke up and still loved each other. I think it´s more hurtful to break up with someone when you´re both still in love. If it would´ve been a bad break up you´d be over it by now. But you still love him, so naturally it hurts more. Besides, he never came to get it back, so there´s really nothing wrong in wearing it” Daichi explained, making that fuzzy void in your heart appear again.
“Don´t you think it´s pathetic that I still love him?” you whispered again, a frown appearing on your face.
“No, it isn´t. Besides, I bet he still loves you too. Trust me, the decision wasn´t easy for him either” Suga added, but before anyone else could say anything to that, the players walked onto the court and a big grin formed on your face as you saw them.
It was weird, you cheered for both teams and very loudly at that, but you missed this.
You missed the adrenaline, the absolute awe of seeing Bokuto´s service ace, seeing Hinata fit in so well, seeing the odd quirks each player had, how far they´ve all come.
It made you sentimental, thinking back on the time you had your first training camp. The same feeling of nervousness and the unexpected was what you felt right now.
That´s also when you met Kuroo first.
He was such a dork back then and the whole process of asking you out was awkward, but the memory brought a big smile to your face and your heart clenched.
You remembered him texting you about his day and when you finally could meet, you´d lay in his bed and listen to songs that reminded him of you.
In the first year of college, you explored the cheapest shops you could find in each other´s city, he got you a cute key chain that broke ten minutes afterwards.
And when you went out to eat in that ramen shop in the back alley that looked really sketchy only to rush through the rain after.
And then it was over just like that.
Because no matter how hard you tried, it wasn´t enough.
You didn´t even realize you were crying until Suga pointed it out when the game was over.
“I´m fine...” you sniffed: “Just thinking about him. Again...” you groaned and wiped your tears away in frustration.
“I should be over it, shouldn´t I?” you whispered.
The teams were already off the court, showering and getting dressed for the interviews.
You excused yourself to go to the restroom, you couldn´t be this glum today when you were with all your friends, it wasn´t fair.
The chattering of the crowd around you was blocked out by you, it was mere white noise, you kept your eyes fixed on the ground as you made your way through the masses, until…
“(Y/N)? Is that you?” you stopped in your tracks, you must´ve heard wrong, but when you turned around to face the owner of the voice, it really was Kuroo.
It was like fate was making a sick joke about you.
You pondered whether you should face the situation like an adult or just make a run for it, the more seconds you stared at him in shock, the latter sounded greater than anything else.
He hadn´t changed at all, well, other than the suit he was wearing. It was something you never thought you´d see him in, something so official and important looking, you always thought he´d look out of place in it, but seeing him like this now made butterflies erupt all over again.
“Tetsu...” you whispered, as if to make sure it was real, as if to make sure it wasn´t just a stupid daydream of yours.
He fought his way through the masses to get to you and for some reason you let him.
Maybe you were like a deer in the headlights, frozen in fear, or maybe you were just curious where this would go.
“Hey, it´s been a while… I didn´t think I´d see you here today” he said, awkwardly scratching his head.
He cursed himself internally for calling out to you, this was a stupid idea. What was he thinking? That you´d jump in joy to see him? That you´d run to him and throw your arms around him like nothing ever happened? Yeah, bullshit.
None of that would happen, you didn´t miss him. He fucked up and regretted it more than anything else, and now he had the audacity to actually approach you again? Great job, Kuroo…
“Well, me neither…” you said at the lack of better words.
You just wanted your heart to stop pounding so much, you cursed your feelings.
“You look great” he said, voice cracking a bit, he was trying his hardest to keep his cool, not to break down crying in front of you. He saw your puffy eyes and it broke your heart, it broke his heart how wrecked you were when you broke up, how utterly defeated you agreed with him that this was for the best.
“Thanks…. You too. I never thought I´d see you in a suit” you commented, trying your best to sound neutral but you couldn´t hide the way your voice shook.
He nodded, letting out a short shaking laugh and explained his career path to you, you just nodded along, smiling in pain and congratulating him.
At least he chose something that made him happy in the end…
“I can´t believe my hoodie still looks better on you… didn´t think you´d keep it after everything” he said quietly.
He looked into the distance, not having the guts to look you in the eyes, but it was the same for you. Yours were still glued on the floor.
“I don´t know why I did” you admitted and somehow his heart clenched at that.
“I´m sorry. I know it´s way too late for that, but if I had my priorities straight back then, if I had fought more for us, maybe we could´ve been together still” he blurted out without thinking, all of his regret was apparent in his voice and it took you aback.
“Fuck. I´m sorry, that was stupid… I don´t wanna put any pressure on you, it wasn´t your fault, I just… I really miss you. But it´s not my place to say anymore, I´m sorry” he did it again, screwing things over and making them worse than they were.
Kuroo was about to leave to interview Hinata when you stopped him.
“I miss you too… it wasn´t just your fault, Tetsu… I shouldn´t have let you go just like that” you announced, admitting that it didn´t sit right with you how you just broke up without a real reason for it.
He gave you a warm smile.
“Do you think we could try again? And this time do it right?” he chuckled, to which you nodded heavily, smiling right back at him.
You just couldn´t let go of each other, you didn´t want this warm feeling to ever disappear.
“I´d love that. We should get coffee sometime when you´re free.” you suggested and quickly exchanged numbers before he had to excuse himself to get to the interview.
Kuroo apologized for being late to Hinata and you went back to your friends with a smile you couldn´t shake.

It’s a bike not a truck (Katsuki Bakugou x Reader)
The image is not mine
Warning: A bit of a manga spoiler
Masterlist
Next up: Denki Kaminari x reader (Requested)
Summary: Bakugou and the reader go on a date but in the middle of the date the Bakusquad interrupt their date.
Bakugou POV
This date was going great (Y/N) is having fun, I was getting toys for her every chance get. I wanted to get a big ass stuffed animal but this fucking games are fucking rigged. But i did get her a bunch of little ones that she had to hold them all in a bag. Now we were walking around seeing all the roller coaster, games, food stand and a giant ferris wheel.
I could noticed that she was staring at the ferris wheel and the she started to talk to me.”Can we go on the ferris wheel?” she looked up at me while pointing at the machine. I looked up at the machine and started to say.
“How about we eat something before we go ride it.” I said to her
“Okay, what should we eat? There a lot of stands around here.” She asked has she grabbed my hand and intertwined her fingers with mines. When we got close the section of the food stand. (Y/N) looked around and pointed at one of the open tables. When we sat down and i started to say.
“Well, we got Pizza, tokoyaki, funnel cake and some other shit. What would you like to eat.”
“How about we share some tokoyaki with that spice sauce you like.” I raised my eyebrow.
“Okay, be right back” I went to the shop that was selling the type of food and ordered the plate with a couple of drink. Wile i waited i looked around my surrounding. There a lot of people tonight good thing i bought the tickets in advanced if not i think they would have been sold out. The worker called my order and i picked it up the tray and started to walk back to the table.
The second that i could start to see the table i saw yellow, red, pink, purple and (H/C). God damn it, no, not now, not here. Why are you idiots here. I got closer and i could hear laughter, I walked further and (Y/N) saw me and pointed to to her side. When she pointed at her side everyone turned around and saw me. I place the tray on the table and sat next top her.
“Baku-bro! What are you doing here?” Said Kirishima all excited.
“It’s non of you business.”
“There an even greater question at hand. What are you guys doing here together?” Mina questioned has she looked at me while on the other side of (Y/N).
“It’s obvious they are on a date” Kaminari said with a shit eating grin on his face.
“WHAT!” Yelled Mina, Kirishima and Sero. While Shinsuo was just stoic face.
“Baku-babe, you finally grown some ball.” Said Raccoon eyes while sticking her tongue out at me.
“WHAT DID YOU SAY YOU BITCH!”
“Katsuki, calm do--”
“Finally going to get your dick wet, and not be so god damned mad all the time.” Knock off pikachu interrupted. I could give a shit right now because what he said made me even madder.
“Deki!” Sero yelled.
“Sero can you tape his mouth?” Shinsuo asked and he just gave him a thumbs up and proceeded to take some tape of his elbow.
“Wait no.” Sinsuo grabbed him and Sero taped his mouth.
“(Y/N), why didn’t you tell anything to us girls?” Mina said has she wrapped her hands around her arm.
“I’m sorry, Mina. We were trying to keep it a secret until we were sure.” she confess to her best friend. “But anyway, Katsuki let’s eat the food going to get cold”
“W sat back down and decided to eat out meal. After we ate out food Mina decided to take (Y/N) to play skee-ball. While the guys decided to pull me away to go play bumper karts. I was even more pissed this date was turning out to be horrible. Why in the hell did this idiots have to interrupted. So, i took out my anger out my smacking into Denki.
“C’mon, bro. Why are you so made?” Kirishima yelled at me while he bumped into Sero.
“Yeah this amusement park is cool as hell.” Pikachu yelled has he bumped me and i got even madder and bumped into Shinsuo.
“SHUT UP.”
“His just mad because Mina stole his girl.” Shinsuo said and before i could say anything a bell went off alerting us that our time was up.We got off the karts and went on our way, i went faster then the rest of them.
“Bakugou don’t leave us.” Sero yelled, I just kept walking further away from them until I spotted the girls and went their way. When I got closer to them the saw me and stopped. The girls had bags of candy and when Mina spotted the other boys she took tiny bags full of hard candy, gummies, lollipops and other types candies.
They took their bags and start to open it and eat their candy. When i looked back at (Y/N) was eating cotton candy, she looked up at me and moved her hand forward has asking me if i wanted any.n. I shake my head no and i could see that her other hand was full with bags. She moved her hand forward and i said no agan, That is when she swallowed the piece of candy that she had in her mouth and started to say.
“Babe, i’m asking you to hold it i want to give you something.
“Oh.” I grabbed the base of the sugar treat and she starts to search in one her bags, She took out a orange plastic bah with decorating on it. The bag was filled with candy just like the other but she was about to give to me she said.
“I bought this candies just for you the shop owner told me that this are spicy and i got them for you.” She said with a smile on her face and placed the bag on myu other hand.
“Thank you.” I took one of the gummy candies and ate one. I could feel my cheeks getting warmer, I could also feel eyes on us. This was getting embarrassing, just leave, I turned around and started to yell.
“WHAT ARE YOU STARING AT!” I grabbed (Y/N) ans stated walking way from them. I could start to hear them yell at us.
“Bakugo is finally a man. He’s finally a man.”Kirishima said with tears coming out of his eyes.
“Keep it PG, Bakugo.” Yelled Mina has she waved at (Y/N), has she waved back.
“He’s definitely going to become a man now.” Said Kaminari.
“Kaminari do me a favor.” Shinsuo asked him,
“Yea-” The second that Kaminari responded his eyes were frosted over meaning that he was under Shinsuos control.
“Now Kaminari, punch your self in the face.” When he said that Kaminari punch himself square in the nose.
“Really, Kaminari. Are you a dumb-ass.” Sero said, then he took his tape and wrapped it around Kaminari who at this point was bleeding from his nose. We just kept walking away from them.
We were far away from them, so i stopped and grabbed (Y/N) hands correctly and intertwined my fingers with her. I looked down at her and she was looking at me with a smile that very much like. We kept walking and we were around a lot of rides but i was interested in one in a particular ride that was at the end of all the booths.
“Bakugou, where are we exactly going?” She asked me with curiosity all over her face.
“Just wait until we get there.” I said with my normal tone voice. That is were we saw it the ferris wheel. Luckily the line was empty, so that was great.
“We’re going to the wheel!” She said all exited, looking up at me.
“Yeah, i told you we would go once we finish eating.” I said without looking at her, because i know that if i looked at her i was going to blush even harder then I already am.
Once we got to the front of the line the worker asked for out ticket and i gave them. When the workers small door for the ride and (Y/N). Before I got in I asked one of the workers if he could stop the ride at the very top. Once i got in she sat on the opposite side of the cart. She started looking at her surroundings.
This is the only time i could sit down with out getting made fun off. How the hell did i get so fucking lucky. She is sweet, caring, nice and very soft spoken. So, how the fuck did get to be with someone so fucking nice. I still don’t understand.
“I’m sorry.” For the first time in my damn life. God i feel fucking weird, (Y/N) was even more surprised. Because she had her eyes widened .
“What do you mean you’re sorry.” She raised her voice. She stood up and sat next to me."
“This most be the worst date you've ever been to. I wanted this to be something special but it’s not” I was looking down at my hands. She grabbed the side of my face and turned my head to face her. I was now looking at (E/C) orbs.
“Katsuki, just because our friends found out that we are dating it doesn’t mean that it was a bad date.” (Y/N) said while pleasing her other hand on the other side of my face.
“Are you sure? Because that walking charger doesn’t know when to shut his damn trap.” I said angrily.
“Katsuki, if we take what Kmainari says to heart, we might as well be idiots like him.” She said while laughing. I smirked. The ride stopped signaling us that we’re at the top, we look out the window and we could see the whole park. Her eyes were shining from all the light of the park.
“You might be right” I turned her face to face me. We were close enough that we could feel each other breath. I got a bit closer and kissed her. The kiss didn’t last that long.
“Have I ever mentioned that your kisses are great?” She said
“Ha, Of course they are great.” I said with a bit of a smirk.
“You say that has if you ever had a girlfriend.”
“OI!” She just laughed

thirty one: sloth
a life of depravity. video games. manga. white cheddar popcorn. a life of emptiness. video games. manga. white cheddar popcorn. a life of whims. video games. manga. white cheddar popcorn. white cheddar skin. white cheddar ceiling. white cheddar smeared on the inside of the closet door, upon which hangs two canvas tote bags full of crumpled receipts.
this summer i am walking in a circle around an old memory of myself. looking back on the last twenty years it seems that i have spent every school break in more or less the same fashion with the occasional interruption of a vacation or a trip to visit family in some faraway country. after a semester of over-exertion and chasing beautiful girls with eyes for everyone but myself i tend to retreat inwards, which many may find a waste as school breaks are precisely when one leaves the cage and goes careening wildly down the street, but not everyone is a freak of nature. some people are freaks of god. other people are just freaks.
at this point i am inclined to believe that we are all freaks, which removes the purpose of the freak-non-freak delineation to begin with, so instead let us say. we are all normal. because we are all people. and people are all a little insane.
it isn't an honor. but we're honored all the same. that's how you carry your contradictions forward, like bodies slung over your shoulder that you'll put down one by one at every bar you walk into as an offering to the barkeep, who pretends you're not there until you slap a dollar bill on the counter.
did you know? there are dollar bills in america. in singapore, the dollars come in coins. big fat golden coins. i like to stack them in my palm and pretend i'm the sun.
i am discovering a hundred new ways to lie on a bed and use my laptop's keyboard without snapping my wrists in half. we may have snapped them into quarters. but we will not touch the halves.
the other day i got out the sewing kit in my luggage and mended my favorite pair of shorts. i've been meaning to tell you this for a while. i'm inexplicably proud of myself for doing it, though i guess if i prod a little deeper it's probably got something to do with the process of recovery, of mending, of putting back together. anyway it's an old pair of shorts. my mother bought them on vacation in korea in 2013. eight years is a long time to be a pair of shorts. but i have lived longer.
the waistband within which lies a strip of stretchy fabric that may have been lycra or just some generic elastic or another had been falling apart through most of the spring semester and because the stretchy fabric is white and the shorts are black it started to look like my underwear was peeking out everywhere i went, and i was left with no choice but to fix it. i own exactly one pair of good shorts. i don't have the willpower to buy more shorts. purchasing things is its own kind of torture. and the mended shorts look very good. there's a bumpy ridge along two stretches of fabric where i darned the flapping tongue of the waistband shut. when i run my fingers along it the texture is rough and uneven, like choppy waves in a baby pool. i like it.
consider this: if we keep fixing things then we will never run out of things to break.
as a literature student i am inclined to turn everything into a circle. i think it's easier to live that way, to assume the laws of cause and effect apply to all living things, myself included. the alternative is too lonely. the alternative is to think that this room with its soprano air-con unit and its creaky bedframe will go back to being nothing when i leave in ten days. have i mentioned i'm leaving in ten days? i'm leaving in ten days. i'm doing it. i'm leaving.
there's a joke in zootopia (2016) where a sloth takes something like three whole minutes to laugh at someone else's joke. it's not very funny. some people take trains. others travel by foot. your point is?
my point is summer is hot and all my bones are crooked now. i doubt they'll ever be straight again, which is perfect because their owner never was to begin with, so now the physical literature and the actual literature can act as cross-references for each other. the dentist sticks one hand in your mouth but it's not enough so she sticks the other one in there too. you're overcome with the desire to bite down but you need to keep your part-time job. it's hard to pay rent. you're twenty-seven years old. you're living in a world our parents didn't want to give us out of fear that we would realize they had nothing left in the closet but cobwebs. it's dying.
anyway i play my video games and i read my manga and i stare at the empty popcorn bag until it gives me the answers to the really important questions like what is the meaning of life and how come some babies are born with hair and others aren't? and i ignore some text messages. and i reply to others. and people get annoyed with me and i lie in bed and i think about stories where no one dies and friendship is the literal key to magic. and at the end of each sticky mango-colored day i get my laptop out and i pull open this blog and i write about it. i write about what living looks like. are you listening? this is what living looks like. like a mountain cut in half to let the morning through.

“‘Electricity’, activate!” Letting out a resonant voice, Hikotarou raised his PDA up high.
Isn’t this guy reading too much manga? Should I stop looking up to him after all? Sukuna thought, hands buried inside his pockets, yet the PDA’s screen started glowing green before his eyes.
“Eh?”
As if to sneer at his foolish reaction, a green shine burst from within the terminal. Drawing a zigzag track in the empty air, the green lightning pierced a PET bottle about five meters away. A chemical-like smell of melted plastic drifted from it.
Sukuna approached the burned PET bottle, and as if to say that he was acting without thinking, he touched it.
“Hot!”
Instantly, he flung it away. The PET bottle made a loud noise as it hit the ground. White smoke dissipated in the wind. A blistering appeared on Sukuna’s hand.
“What’re you doing?” Hikotarou cackled a laugh.
With his back turned to that laughter, Sukuna was looking down at his hand, forgetting to even blink.
That was real. It was neither magic nor a trick. A real supernatural power.
He had never even imagined that something like it existed in this world. Games were games, not reality. It was exactly because he usually played many of them that Sukuna was perfectly aware of this much – or at least he intended to be.
However, the words that Hikotarou had said to him one day came back vividly. A video game that one could play in the real world. That was most certainly a fact, not a metaphor or anything of the sort.
Sukuna heard an unfamiliar noise. A steadily pulsating beat. That was something Sukuna could hear from nowhere other than his own chest. A fragment of a world that had only ever exited within fiction and fantasy was unmistakably floating before his eyes – this truth was making Sukuna’s heart beat loudly.
“How’s that? It was true, wasn’t it? You believe what I said now?”
It was a wholly different story that Sukuna was annoyed at Hikotarou, who, in a stark contrast with him, was smirking proudly and pushing his PDA against Sukuna’s cheek. He gave quite some thought to knocking down the device, but that would be lashing out while being in the wrong, which was pathetic. After reflecting a little, he decided to attack from a different opening.
“You said you’d bought this thing, right? How much was it?”
When asked, Hikotarou quickly averted his eyes and said in a low voice, “1k.”
“So expensive! Ain’t that the same amount as the promotion points!?”
1k was a short for 1000. In order to rank up within JUNGLE, the points had to be consumed, and the points required when an E-rank was promoted to an L-rank were exactly a thousand. When thinking about earning that many points in an honest manner, it would likely take almost a month.
“Also, didn’t you say this was disposable or something? Don’t tell me this is the end.”
“O-Of course not! I said it was disposable ‘cause there’s a frequency limit! We can still use it!”
“How many times more?”
“Four...”
Meaning that item cost 1000JP for five times of use. Unfair overcharging was an understatement for it. And out of all things, Hikotarou had spent a valuable opportunity to make fair use of those 200JP on a PET bottle. Most likely with the sole purpose of showing Sukuna something nice.
The moment he thought this, something welled up within him.
“Fufu,” he snorted as if about to burst out, a roar of laughter following suit. “Ahahahahaha! What’s with that? Such a waste! Aren’t you an idiot!?”
“Sh-Shut up! It’s fine! Those are my points after all!”
“Even so, you—for something like that—”
“It’s ‘cause you wouldn’t believe what I said if I didn’t do something like this!”
A worked-up Hikotarou was so amusing that Sukuna laughed even louder. If his classmates saw him now, they would be wide-eyed and shocked. Sukuna himself had just found out for the first time that he could laugh with such a strident voice.
“Damn, it ain’t something to laugh so much for. You’re always making such a sour face too,” Hikotarou said with a strained smile. It was apparently influenced by Sukuna’s burst of laughter.
And so, for a while, the two players laughed together.
“But how does this thing work?” After laughing for some time, Sukuna scanned Hikotarou’s terminal with his eyes. “Doesn’t seem like there’s any mechanism planted in your PDA. It’s the same model as mine.”
“Yeah. Everything is apparently thanks to JUNGLE’s personal use app. Everybody calls it ‘ESP app’.”
If one could use psychic powers upon signing in, then there was indeed no social media more revolutionary than this one. It was about enough to become explosively viral, but it had its own reasons to remain as underground.
According to Hikotarou—
“There are these two types, the ‘skill’ and ‘item’, in the ESP app.”
“Skill” referred to powers that could be used constantly. If people called something a “psychic ability” in JUNGLE, it normally indicated one thing. That when rising to G rank and above, they could choose only one power and use it limitlessly. From among many abilities, they would select just one that matched them and nurture it in their desired direction.
On the other hand, any player could use an “item”. However, it was disposable – as Hikotarou had just showed, one had to spend copious amounts of points for each time of use. In exchange, it could be used in combination with skills to develop various strategies.
“You can clear high-level missions by combining those two – that’s what the upper-rankers are doing, it seems. Well, this is just what I heard, since I’m still in a low rank.”
“Huun. Sounds like you can do a lot, depending on the combination.” Looking through JUNGLE’s store, Sukuna nodded as if impressed.
“Yeah. Sukuna, you should think now about which you’re gonna pick when you turn into a G.”
“That so? I can also use it?”
Up until the present, Sukuna had lived a life where “things that he could not do” did not exist. Which was why he had never once thought that he wanted superhuman powers like those from mangas or movies.
The reason for Sukuna to have butterflies in his chest when he saw the “ESP app” was that JUNGLE had destroyed his world.
It was such a wholly different world that it could completely overturn the things imposed on him until now – the tedious common sense and reality – by his parents and the people at school. Coming in contact with a power none of them could imagine and racing to a place their hands could never reach – how thrilling that was!
When he realized, Sukuna was gripping his PDA strongly. This was neither him fleeing from suffocation nor rebelling against parents. Sukuna had just now come to know the true appeal of JUNGLE.
“Right. Aah, that’s right! I’ll rise too! Then, I’ll use even more amazing powers and accomplish bigger missions!”
“Yeah! That’s the spirit!” Hikotarou nodded, laughing.
Sukuna was also grateful that he existed. Hikotarou was the one who had told him about JUNGLE and showed him its real charm – it was all thanks to him.
If he could one day clear up all sorts of missions using various kinds of psychic abilities with Hikotarou, it would surely be extremely, tremendously fun.
It was Sukuna’s first time being excited ever since he was born.
◆
“Well, see ya tomorrow,” Hikotarou said at the three-way junction on the way home that day, waving his hand.
Sukuna stopped walking involuntarily, as their talk had been at the most interesting part. They had looked into the JUNGLE store list, discussed about this and that combination and just as he figured out the best combo, he had started talking about it.
Sukuna’s house was on the right side of a Y-shaped three-way junction. Hikotarou was about to walk toward the left side. Wordlessly, Sukuna went to Hikotarou’s side.
“Sukuna?”
At Hikotarou’s surprised look, Sukuna pouted and turned away. “It’s fine to go the long way around sometimes, ain’t it?”
Hikotarou blinked repeatedly. That gaze was annoying. Enough to make him almost unwittingly forget the invisible combo that he had finally come up with.
“That so? Then hang out with me for a bit.”
Hikotarou did not try to tease him for it. His countenance surly, Sukuna replied with nothing but a “fine by me” to that grinning face.
And so, Hikotarou took a detour. The place he stopped by was a drugstore in front of the station and what he bought was cat food.
As Hikotarou held two one-kilogram dry food packages with both arms, Sukuna asked as if skeptical, “You had a cat?”
Hikotarou averted his eyes with a rather subtle expression. “It’s not like I’m keeping it.”
Through that single sentence, Sukuna was somewhat able to understand the situation. He followed behind Hikotarou, who was walking mutely.
Eventually, the two arrived at a vacant lot on the outskirts of town. In a corner of said vacant lot, where weeds grew boundlessly, there was a cardboard box. Cries of “mew, mew” that seemed to beg for something could be heard coming from inside the box.
“They were four at first,” crouching down and opening the food package, Hikotarou whispered as though talking to himself. “One was the mother and the others were kitties. But one day, the mother was gone, and when I came to see them after a while, the two other than this one were dead.
Sukuna looked around. On a spot at a short distance from there, he could see two small stones lined up beside the block wall.
“This guy here was about to die too, but I did a bit of research, and after I gave him milk and brought him something warm, he managed to recover one way or another.”
“Won’t you try to take it home?”
Still crouched, Hikotarou looked up at Sukuna. He had on a weak smile. “We can’t have pets at my place. My da—my father hates this kinda stuff.”
“Then—I know; how about you use JUNGLE? Send out a mission to find him a foster parent.”
Hikotarou laughed dryly, “I think whoever takes it on will probably just take the points and send the cat off to a health center.”
Sukuna went silent, crouching down.
The little cat was dirty. Its fur and skin were muddy, its tail bent. It was engrossed in eating the food, but once it looked up, its eyes had hardened mucus on them.
Hikotarou took out a tissue and gently wiped it off. “Wanna pet it?”
“That okay?”
Hikotarou raised his voice as he laughed at the dumbfounded question. With a sour face, Sukuna reached out a hand and touched the kitten. Perhaps thinking that he was food, the kitten thrust its nose onto his palm and sniffed it incessantly. It was ticklish. His mouth distorting, Sukuna endured the sensation. Finally, the kitten pushed its body onto Sukuna’s hand and its sleeping breath began to ensue.
As if not to disrupt the revolving, throaty sound, Sukuna complained in a low voice, “Hey. What do I do about this? I can’t move.”
“Won’t it be fine if you don’t move?”
“You!” He let his anger show, but the kitten might awaken if he moved recklessly. As if having bitten into a bitter-tasting bug, Sukuna looked down at the kitten. “Does it have a name?”
“Yeah. He’s also Nine.”
That was Hikotarou’s handle name. Sukuna stared at him with a look that said, “Don’t give it such a confusing name”, yet Hikotarou was gazing down at “Nine” and laughing.
“I’m glad it’s summer right now. A parentless kitty wouldn’t survive if it were winter. Even then, many dangerous things will likely happen to him, but if he grows up just a bit more, he’ll get by on his own—”
“I’ll,” Sukuna opened his mouth before thinking of anything. “I’ll keep it.”
Hikotarou looked at Sukuna with wide eyes.
“My parents probably won’t allow it, but even so, I’ll keep it. I think I can do it. My house is big. I can think of lots of places that neither my parents’ nor the servants’ eyes could reach.”
“Sukuna—”
“That should be better for this guy than here. I can put up a box, a blanket and things like that in our unused warehouse, and a toilet too, I guess. I don’t know about that stuff, but I’ll look it up later. You can also come over when you feel like seeing him.”
As if angry, Sukuna was making a surly face. Hikotarou looked at that expression of his with rounded eyes. Unable to bear the gaze, Sukuna stared down at the little cat once again.
“Of course, only if you’re okay with it.”
Hikotarou replied to Sukuna’s mumbled words, which sounded like an excuse, with a smile that seemed to shine, “It is! I’m counting on you, Sukuna!”
Sukuna laughed sheepishly. The kitten’s sleeping breath ensued windingly from within his hand. While feeling its body temperature on his palm, Sukuna inferred his opinion by muttering a few words, “By the way, can’t you change the name Nine?”
“Nope.”
◆
The home of Nine the kitten was soon found.
There was a wooden shack in a corner of the Gojou estate. Originally used as the gardener’s warehouse, it was now abandoned as the garden tools had been moved to a storehouse in the main residence. The shack, which Sukuna’s parents obviously did not go anywhere near and neither did the servants, was perfect for his purpose. He had arranged the kitten’s needs in a corner of the cramped and dim shack.
He could not possibly bring that cardboard box home, so he had laid a blanket over a basket woven from wood, making it into an improvised bed. The kitten Nine had raised its voice in protest against being moved from its former location, but it soon quieted down after being tossed into the blanket.
He had left it with a box of food, a water bowl and litter for its toilet. He could not take it outside, so he would have to raise it there for a while.
Looking around the small shack, Sukuna had nodded to himself. The kitten would surely be okay there. Nobody would find out. Convincing himself of this, Sukuna had cautiously left the shack and returned to the main house.
Today was the day to eat dinner with his mother.
“How was school, Sukuna?” such words came out of her red lips.
His knife, which had been carefully cutting the meat, stopped moving completely.
Sukuna looked at her with upturned eyes. The appearance of his mother enjoying an elegant dinner on the other end of the pure white tablecloth and silver candlesticks, with two servants at her left and right sides, was almost like the queen of a nation.
“Just normal.”
“‘It was’.”
“It was normal.”
His mother titled her neck a little. With a slight movement from her gaze, one of the servants moved soundlessly and poured wine into her glass.
“Have you been getting along with your friends? Your face has been bright lately. Are you having fun?”
Sukuna was silent.
If she was asking if he was having fun playing with a friend, the answer was yes. But not with the friends she had provided for him – Ninomiya and his former followers. It was with a smart and lively boy named Kue Hikotarou.
What would his mother do if she found out about Hikotarou?
She did not approve of anything that did not act in accordance with her will approaching him. Needless to recall the matter with Ninomiya, if his mother knew about Hikotarou, she would certainly try to keep him away. He could not think that she would be appreciative of things like JUNGLE.
Hikotarou might have to transfer schools because of him. As this possibility crossed his mind, Sukuna was horrified.
After thinking a little, Sukuna answered, “Yes, I am having fun, Mother.”
So you have nothing to worry about. So don’t meddle in anything and leave it as that. Leave me alone—
His mother drank a sip of wine, smiling. “Is that so? Then I’m glad. Your happiness is my happiness—”
Suddenly, the smile disappeared.
She stood up from the chair as if kicking it away. The glass collapsed with a smashing sound, the wine spilling and dyeing the tablecloth red. Approaching the frozen Sukuna with big steps, she firmly grabbed the hand that was still holding a knife and raised it with force.
A raspy voice came out of her lips, which were once tightened into a thing line, “What is this?”
Stock-still, Sukuna looked at it. He had a burn on his right hand. It was the wound that he had earned himself right after school today, when Hikotarou showed him the ESP app.
It had happened due to his own carelessness, and until just now, Sukuna had even forgotten that he had a burn. After all, it did not particularly hurt and he thought it would heal soon.
But his mother was different.
“Explain, Sukuna.”
Sukuna’s mother thought of him as a treasure. He was her property, like gemstones and rings. Of course his mother would be angry if said property was damaged. Whatever the property itself thought did not matter.
Sukuna spoke with a voice that sounded like a gasp, “It—is nothing, Mother. This is just—”
“‘Just’ what?”
“I was eating something hot during lunch and... I touched the food with my fingers...”
It was a painful excuse if he were to say so himself, but he could not think of anything else. Talking about Hikotarou was out of question. If he said he had borne it in class, there was no mistaking that she would check with the school for confirmation. If the lie were exposed, Sukuna’s mother would thoroughly investigate his surroundings.
If this happened, Hikotarou’s existence would definitely be revealed. And if she found out about Hikotarou, farewell would be waiting in the not-too-distant future.
Sukuna’s mother stayed dead-silent, peeking at his face fixatedly. Halting his breath, Sukuna accepted her gaze.
“Is that so?” muttering these few words, the mother let go of Sukuna’s hand.
Sukuna pulled his hand to his chest as if stealing it back. His heart was beating with strong thumps.
As a Crescent Moon-like smile once again crept on his mother’s red lips, she reached her hand out to caress his head. “Mother has an urgent matter to take care of. I will be going now, but you can eat dinner by yourself, right?”
Swallowing saliva as if swallowing lead, Sukuna answered, “Yes.”
“Really? You are a good child, Sukuna.”
Stroking Sukuna’s head in a noticeably rough manner, his mother turned on her heels. The way that the wine splashed on the back of her skirt looked like a spurt of blood was forever seared into Sukuna’s eyes.
◆
Five: You there?
Nine: I am. Got any business with me?
Five: Nothing that you can call “business” in particular.
Nine: Then what is it? Can’t sleep?
Five: Hey. Didn’t anything happen to you?
Nine: I don’t get what you mean.
Five: I mean, like...
Five: Didn’t anyone, like your parents or people from school, say anything to you?
Nine: Aah, I get it. Is it about JUNGLE?
Nine: I told you, didn’t I? That the level of anonymity is super high in JUNGLE. You can change the app icon anytime so nobody can tell who you are just by looking, and you can also hide that you installed it if you feel like it. You’re scared of being found out ‘cause you’re from a good family, right?
Five: No! That’s not it!
Nine: Then what is it?
Five: Like I said...
Five: It’s nothing.
Nine: What’s up with you?
Five: I said it’s nothing!
Five: Just, if anything happens at school, make sure to tell me. ‘Cause I might be able to do something about it.
Nine: Don’t say such creepy things out of nowhere... What, you mean something’s gonna happen to me?
Five: I don’t know. But this is a what-if.
Nine: Yes, yes, thank you for your kindness.
Five: I’m serious!
Nine: Then I’ll answer seriously; I won’t rely on you even if that happens. JUNGLE players are independent by default. No matter if they have friends, they don’t do that kinda thing. Aren’t you the same?
Nine: ......
Nine: Sukuna? You awake?
Five: I am.
Five: I get it. It’s just like you said. Forget about that.
Nine: Ah, that so? Then are you done? I ain’t done with tomorrow’s homework yet.
Five: Haa? You should finish homework the moment you get it.
Nine: Shaddap! G’night!
Five: G’night.
◆
The next day and the one after, Hikotarou did not show up at school.
Sukuna was fretting about all sorts of things, yet it was not as if he could do anything. Hikotarou had said that in the chatroom, but if Sukuna’s mother attempted to keep him away, there was surprisingly little that Sukuna could do.
Sukuna’s mother loved him and tried giving him whatever he wanted. However, it was completely impossible to change her opinions through his. Plead as he might, his mother would do as she willed. His voice would not reach her.
But that did not mean he could fold his arms and watch.
He was the first and only friend that Sukuna could respect ever since he had been born. Just thinking about this friend having to go somewhere far away because of him made chills run through his spine.
Until now, he had never experienced so much fear and anxiety. Although he did feel suffocated and disturbed by his mother’s actions, he had never felt dread.
Before he realized, Sukuna had sneaked out of his room and headed to the shack. He opened the door gently. Relying on the light of his PDA, he found the basket he had left in a corner. Wrapped in its blanket, the kitten Nine had been sleeping soundly.
However, perhaps noticing Sukuna, Nine looked up at him with its round eyes. Raising a sweet cry of “mew, mew”, it scrambled its way up the basket, crawled out and ended up rolling down to the floor with a thump.
“Ah, h-hey—”
He frantically picked Nine up, but this time, it climbed up his arm. As he let it do as it pleased out of not knowing what to do, Nine reached Sukuna’s shoulder, rubbed its head against his neck and curled up on the spot. It was warm and ticklish.
Sukuna’s cheeks slackened. Supporting Nine with one hand, he made sure it would not fall. Sitting down in a corner of the shack, he whispered in pauses, “I gotta protect him, huh.”
As if to respond to his talking to himself, Nine cried out a “mew, mew”.
◆
Even though he had consolidated his determination, on the very next day, Hikotarou popped up in front of Sukuna as he was getting ready to go home.
“Hey, Sukuna. Have you become an L ranker ye—ouch, owowowowow!”
As Hikotarou waved his hand lightly with the same bright smile as usual, Sukuna forcibly grabbed his wrist and went out to the corridor.
Hikotarou raised his voice in protest, “Wh-What’re you doing?! That hurts!”
“Shut up! Why did you take days off!?”
While Hikotarou was not coming to school, Sukuna had imagined all sorts of bad things. Such as, he could be preparing to be transferred or his parents could have told him to stay away from Sukuna. That was why he was awfully irritated by Hikotarou’s carefree smile.
However, Hikotarou, who had no idea about that, said while cackling a laugh, “My bad, my bad. I was just a bit busy with missions lately.”
Apparently, Hikotarou had been absent from school due to fake illness. As he said that he had been running around town while pretending he was at school in order to accomplish JUNGLE missions, Sukuna was flabbergasted.
Feeling spent, Sukuna leaned against the wall. He gave Hikotarou a sharp gaze. Fretting had made him look like an idiot.
At that moment, he realized something. Hikotarou’s forehead was just slightly swollen above his right eye.
“What’s that?”
As Sukuna pointed at it, Hikotarou raised his voice with an “aah” and said, “I hit it in the middle of a mission. Nothing to worry about.”
“Nobody’s worried.”
“Thought so. That aside, wanna go on a mission now?”
At Hikotarou’s shining eyes, Sukuna asked curiously, “Missions can be done in duos?”
“What, you didn’t know? There’s an urgent mission coming out now!”
“‘Urgent mission’?”
Despite finding the unfamiliar term strange, Sukuna tapped on JUNGLE and opened the “mission” tab. As he did so, the words “urgent mission” were indeed dancing over the top row. Unlike the other missions, a large red font was used for it.
The title was “Urgent Mission: Uwagami Town Survey”.
“Activating urgent mission. The mission content is a survey around Uwagami Town. Please record the cityscape and roads of Uwagami Town in photos and videos and upload them. For the photos, the reward is 5 JP each, and for the videos, 50 JP per minute. We will pay double the reward for videos near Uwagami First Street. Details are as follows─”
Sukuna dry-swallowed. “This is around here?”
“Yeah! So it’s a chance! It was activated just now, so most of the players haven’t noticed!”
Hikotarou was excited. Of course he was. Uwagami Town – moreover, the First Street – was precisely the surroundings of Uwagami Elementary, which Sukuna and Hikotarou had to pass through. Meaning that they would earn JPs just by taking pictures of this area. It was as if dirt had turned into gold.
“All right! Let’s go!” Squeezing his PDA, Sukuna gave a broad nod. As if he were infected by Hikotarou’s enthusiasm, his chest started throbbing.
◆
Uwagami Town was a high-class residential area located in the heart of the city center. The adjacent Shimogami Town was a government district where governmental facilities were concentrated, and many people who belonged to government agencies lived in it. In particular, there were police officers stationed in front of mansions where important people lived, watching for suspicious figures.
To start off, Sukuna took a picture of one of said police officers. The police officer merely squinted without saying anything.
“First, 5JP!”
“Let’s go steady! Steady!”
Talking loudly to each other, the two took pictures one after another. A two-lane main street that ran from east to west through Uwagami Town, an enormous building under construction, a vast parking lot, commercial buildings lined up as if to jostle one another, a spacious park and the children playing tag in it.
Upon a more careful look, there were countless other people taking pictures like Sukuna and Hikotarou. Salary men, high school girls, housewives and even elders who, no matter how one looked at it, were over 70 were positioning their PDAs to photograph and record the streets. Amongst them, there were also those who were being interrogated by police officers due to taking pictures too unreservedly. They indeed looked suspicious.
The chances that Sukuna and Hikotarou would be questioned were slim, but they somewhat did not want to be regarded as the same as those people, so they started moving to less popular locations.
“Let’s go, Sukuna!”
“Ah, wait!”
The main street of Uwagami Town stretched through a beautifully maintained city, but when one entered one of the back streets, an old townscape spread out. The back alleys, so narrow that it seemed people would have a hard time just passing each other in them, had branches and leaves hanging over them as if they were tents. Hikotarou and Sukuna sprinted under the sunlight coming through the gaps between the leaves, storing everything that caught their eyes in pictures.
At the veranda of a wooden house, an old woman was napping with a cat on her lap. Just beside the gutter stood an outdated red post. In front of a mysterious shop, there were three lined-up statues of tanuki. Sukuna photographed them all with refreshing surprise.
“It might be my first time coming to a place like this.”
Hearing the whisper that leaked from Sukuna while taking pictures, Hikotarou made a skeptical face. “Your house is around here, ain’t it? Never went exploring?”
Sukuna shook his head. The only part of Uwagami Town he knew was the main street up to the school and its surroundings. He had never made side-trips or eaten outside – he was never given the choice to go “exploring”.
Because by no means would his mother allow such a “vulgar” conduct.
Head tilted, Hikotarou said with a nonchalant voice, “Hu~n... Welp, that’s okay. Then, I’ll be your guide!”
“You know much about it?”
“This area’s my backyard!” Hikotarou said, full of confidence and grinning.
With just a step, they jumped over a stream fortified with concrete. As an unknown dog barked at them, Sukuna laughed at Hikotarou for dropping his PDA. They hopped onto the block walls and rushed through as if to sew the gaps between the houses.
All of it was a new world that Sukuna did not know about. Every time he took cuts of said world, his JP went up. He was accumulating the power to open novel worlds. Absorbed in it, Sukuna pressed the shutter over and over.
Eventually, by the time that this unfamiliar world began to dye itself in the colors of sunset, an electronic sound suddenly echoed from the PDA.
“Urgent mission concluded! The cumulative JUNGLE Points will be calculated now. Please note that any subsequent shooting will not be converted into points!”
As the end of the mission was announced, Sukuna and Hikotarou looked at each other’s faces at the same time.
“How many did you take?”
“About 200, I guess. I’ll probably rank up with this!”
As Sukuna said so, Hikotarou grinned. “Then let’s celebrate!”
Hikotarou turned around, going back the way they had come from. Sukuna followed behind him.
Two arrived at the shop with the tanuki statues that they had seen on the way. The sign that the tanuki were holding had the words “snacks shop” on it.
Sukuna stared at it in puzzlement. “What’s a snack?”
“For real?! No, well, that’s right. You’re a rich kid.”
Sukuna was offended by the disbelief in the way he spoke. However, Hikotarou opened the glass door unconcernedly and stepped into the store.
It was small and dim. The objects tightly crammed into the cupboards and baskets were all things that Sukuna did not get very well.
When he picked one up and inspected it, he found that it was a bag with richly colored gummy-like things inside. It looked like some new type of poison, but he could not rule out the possibility that it was food.
“Sukuna, you’re taking that? Then me too,” Hikotarou said, stealing it from Sukuna’s hands.
“No, hum—”
“Granny~, I’m leaving the money here~.”
“Aight~.”
Ignoring Sukuna’s voice, Hikotarou put money on the front edge of the unattended entranceway and then took cider from the refrigerator. Without time to do as much as be surprised at this innovative system, in which the owner of the shop did not have to even show her face, Sukuna was taken outside by Hikotarou and the two sat down next to the tanuki.
“My treat. We’re celebrating your raising of status!”
Being handed the colorful gummies bag, Sukuna stared fixatedly at it and opened his mouth in hesitation, “Hey, is this...”
“Edible?” was what he intended to ask, yet Hikotarou was devouring them without paying him any mind. Apparently, it was really food.
He opened the seal. If his mother knew Sukuna was eating something that had any foreign substance in it, his mother would probably pass out. That was why Sukuna closed his eyes, readied himself and threw it into his mouth.
“How is it? Good?”
As Hikotarou asked innocently, Sukuna said with an indescribable facial expression, “Tastes like chemicals.”
“That’s what’s good about it. Feel like you’re gonna get addicted to it one of these days?”
“Don’t wanna be.”
Sukuna washed his throat with the cider. Heaving a breath, he looked at the tanuki statues beside him.
“I didn’t know this kind of store existed at all.”
“Told ya that this area was my backyard, didn’t I? There’s lots of other places like this one!”
Earnestly impressed with an “eeeh”, he casually asked, “So your house is around here?”
Hikotarou’s smile instantly thinned. “Hm, well, kinda like that.”
Hikotarou’s complex facial expression caused Sukuna to hesitate asking any further, so he kept his mouth shut. It might be that he did not want to talk about his home circumstances. It was not as if Sukuna wanted to pry either.
Hikotarou was completely different from his “school friends” of until now. He knew Sukuna was a member of the Gojou family, but was not swayed by that. He saw Sukuna for what he was.
So his home circumstances did not matter.
“I see,” Sukuna replied with a mutter, looking up at the sky.
A large airship was crossing the sky, which was painted in sunset colors.
As he ate the mysterious gummy candy and drank the cider, a question left Sukuna’s mouth out of the blue, “By the way, what was so urgent in that urgent mission?”
“Eh?”
“Well, ain’t it kinda weird to make a survey of the city into an emergency? Just what’s the reason to investigate the city in such a hurry?”
Folding his arms, Hikotarou began to think. “Now that you mentioned, it’s indeed suspicious. The reward’s too high in the first place.”
“For starters, who issued that mission? I’d never heard of an urgent mission until now, y’know?”
Sukuna opened his PDA, which was in the middle of charging, tapping the “mission” tab. Even if a mission had already ended, one could check the details from the history category.
Hikotarou explained while doing the same as him, “Just like the name says, urgent missions are missions with a high level of urgency. They’re easy to spot ‘cause they come from the top of the list, but they charge a lot, so not many people issue them. To begin with, only upper rankers can activate these. Well, the one who issued it was—”
“H. N”.
That was the name of the player who had triggered the urgent mission. Apparently formed of just initials, the handle name was tasteless and dull. Even as they tried jumping to the user page, most of the information was private. There was no doubt that this was a top ranker, but they found out nothing more.
Staring in a daze at H. N.’s user page, Sukuna opened his mouth, “Since we’re at it, let’s try to guess. This guy’s objective, I mean.”
“I’m in.”
Meaning that, just as when Hikotarou’s mission and Sukuna’s JP gains had been speculated about, they would try to conclude what goal this H. N. person had that warranted issuing an urgent mission.
“It told us to take pics of the city. Is he a cameraman or something?”
“There’s no way a pro would use photos taken by amateurs. He’s better off doing it himself on that matter.”
“So, in any case, he just needed a big amount of them? He used lots of users for it ‘cause he wouldn’t be able to handle it on his own?”
“If he were taking a bunch of pics alone, he might be warned off by the police. But if it’s done in large numbers, he’d get the pics even if one or two people were caught. Besides—” Sukuna pointed to a sentence in the mission details. “Here says, ‘back alleys that aren’t on the map will give you bonuses’. So he wants info on backstreets, secret paths and the like?”
“For what?”
“The only thing that comes to mind right off the bat is, well – a preliminary investigation, I guess.”
“Of what?”
“Let’s see; some kind of data—”
“Like an escape route?”
The duo’s smiles disappeared at this casual phrase.
Those were disturbing words. As they could not grasp the whole picture, their imaginations were awfully agitated. Pulling their faces close to each other’s, the two continued the “speculation”.
“Escape route for who?”
“If he gotta run, he must be a criminal.”
“Like, say, a robber?”
“There’s government buildings here, so ain’t it more possible that he’s a terrorist?”
Silence.
The “caw, caw” cry of the crows echoed comically. The two burst into laughter at the same time.
“N-No way! There’s no chance that’d be it!”
“Y-Yeah! None, none! No way there’d be terrorists in Japan!”
While laughing, they were aware there a somewhat dry ring was mixed in it. Indeed, something of that sort was, first of all, probably impossible. However, it was not as if it did not exist.
Most importantly, there was nothing they could do now. They had already submitted the photos. No matter what H. N. was scheming, they could do nothing about it.
Even so, unable to erase the vague fear he had once acquired, Sukuna peeked at his PDA. In that moment, a fanfare-like sound played from the PDA. A holographic image of a deformed parrot character – Jumpy – appeared, dancing around Sukuna and Hikotarou’s general area.
“Urgent mission accomplished! 2745 points added to your JUNGLE Points! Rank up! Five has been promoted to JUNGLE L-ranker. Congratulations.”
Just like dates changed, the rank display in his own page was replaced with a flashing noise. From E-ranker to L-ranker. Along with that, the functions that had been restricted until now were unlocked as well. New rank mission ordering rights, mission activation rights, AR function usage rights—
Sukuna felt that his world had expanded yet again.
When he looked to the side, Hikotarou was raising his cider bottle with a cheerful smile.
“Congrats on your promotion, Sukuna!”
“Thanks.”
As Sukuna gave a lopsided smile, he and Hikotarou had a toast with their cider bottles.
Yeah, that’s right.
JUNGLE was the source of Sukuna’s power. It was a window that showed a new world to someone like him, who was bound hand and foot by his parents and simply made to walk the rails that had been decided for him.
No matter how shady it was, he could not think of losing it. That was about as terrifying as losing Hikotarou.
“Hey? Sukuna?”
He came to his senses. It seemed Hikotarou was calling him.
“A-Aah. What is it?”
“Just wondering how the cat Nine is going.”
“Aah, he’s so well that it’s a problem. He climbed on my shoulder a while ago—”
“Eh~, what’s up with that? He’s never done that with me!”
Laughing at Hikotarou’s sullen face, Sukuna said, “Then come see him next time. He’ll be happy too, for sure!”
“Yeah, true. One of these days.” Hikotarou laughed faintly, filling his mouth with cider.
◆
He woke up early that day.
“6AM?” as he whispered, a yawn came out. Sukuna turned off his PDA, put it in his sleepwear’s pocket and got up from his bed.
He had to wake up earlier than usual ever since bringing Nine in. That was the expected, as he was the only one looking after it. He had to set up a time to take care of Nine before going to and after returning from school.
He quietly slipped out of his bedroom and headed to the first floor, sneaking out through the window of an unused guest room. He had secured this “escape route” by making use of Grass Root. He picked places where the servants would not be and times when they would not be around, rushing within the stipulated period.
Therefore, he was at ease. He had made sure that by no means would anyone find out about it.
Upon opening the door, Sukuna learned that this was nothing but an assumption.
Nine had disappeared from the shack.
His heart resounded with a strong thump.
He wondered if it was hiding somewhere. It was a kitten. It might have crawled into a spot that would not cross his mind.
However, he could not find such a breach anywhere in the shack. Neither could he hear its voice. It would always come crying loudly and cling to Sukuna whenever he arrived.
There was only an empty basket and a blanket that had grown cold in there.
He peeked into the bowl that he had filled to the brim with water. It had not decreased in the slightest. Was it not going thirsty or hungry, wherever it was? For starters, where had it even gone? His own expression full of anxiety was reflected over the water in the bowl.
As he looked at himself in blank amazement, a sweet voice coiled around him from behind, “Sukuna.”
His body trembled with a start.
As he turned around with eyes wide-open, his mother was standing at the shack’s entrance. Her red lips were forming a smile. Both her arms were holding a basket with a pure-white kitten on it.
“If you want something, you can just tell your mother.”
Grinning at him while he was motionless as if frozen, Sukuna’s mother left the basket with the white kitten by his feet. Not making the littlest movement, the white kitten stared fixatedly ahead, as if already disciplined to do so.
Words finally spilled from his dry mouth, “Where’s Nine?”
His mother tilted her head, but after catching on, she at last said, “If you mean that filthy one, it has been disposed of.” She spoke while smiling, “You wanted a cat, right, Sukuna? If so, you should purchase a proper one.”
Her hand caressed Sukuna’s hair. As though she were admiring a treasure.
“You mustn’t touch such a dirty stray cat like that one. What if you were scratched and contracted some disease? My dear Sukuna, I can’t let you do that.”
Sukuna looked down at the white kitten. It was well-manneredly, quietly sitting in the basket. There was a luxury accessory, adorned with a golden chain and red ribbon, fitted around its neck.
It was a choker.
While he was looking down at the kitten, a dark emotion gushed forth within Sukuna. It was a sensation that he had tasted countless times until now. When those people had tried to provide him friends. When he found out that those people were watching his room. That was the feeling that welled up inside.
He had managed to swallow it down until now. He had been able to control it. Because he was aware, somewhere in his heart, that there would be no going back once he laid it bare.
But he believed that, if he gulped it down now, something within him would definitely end up broken.
Therefore, Sukuna reached out and took the bowl full of water in his hand. As he glared at his mother, the smile disappeared from her red lips. Fear did not surge even as he saw this. More strongly than that, the dark emotion – “hatred” – was filling Sukuna from the inside.
“WHO—” He swung up the water bowl. “—SAID I WANTED A CAT?!!”
Sukuna slammed it at the kitten.
The bowl did not hit it directly. It collided with the nearby wall, bouncing off a big splash. Struck by said splash, the kitten let out a cry and jumped off the basket. It ran to a corner of the shack and gazed up at Sukuna as if scared of him.
When he saw that look, the dark feeling was gone like a retracting tide.
The kitten was not at fault for anything. It was simply brought here unknowing of anything and made into a replacement for some stranger. It was shameful and pathetic of him to take his anger out on it. He felt like he had become the same kind of person as his mother. Sukuna sensed that his own hatred was aimed at himself.
On the other hand—
Any facial expression had vanished from his mother’s face. She was as expressionless as a Noh mask. Lips sewed into a thin line, she stared intently at Sukuna.
Sukuna did not return the gaze. However, he did not attempt to explain himself either. It was not that he feared doing so. But because he was repulsed of even speaking to her.
After a moment of silence that could be deemed as an eternity, his mother muttered in a few words, “Really? I see.” She then turned on her heels, exiting the dim shack.
Left behind, Sukuna did nothing. He crouched on the spot, burying his face in-between his knees. Recalling Nine’s voice whenever it called for him, the softness of its fur whenever it snuck up to him and the ticklishness of its breath whenever it sniffed him, Sukuna cried with his shoulders shaking.
The white kitten was observing Sukuna.
◆
The next day, Sukuna found the collar that the white kitten had been wearing inside his residence’s trashcan.
That was what happened to the things Sukuna said he did not want.
◆
What should he say to Hikotarou? Lying on his bed, that was all Sukuna could think about.
The answer did not come to him. There was no way it would. The one who had offered to take in the kitten Nine, which Hikotarou found and had been taking care of, was Sukuna himself. There was no way he could tell him that his parents had found out about it and gotten rid of it.
Ever since losing Nine, Sukuna had secluded himself in his room, refusing to go to school or even eat, thinking about this all the while. His parents had knocked on his door and spoken words mixed with persuasion, and every time he heard their voices, he desperately had to overcome the urge to clear them away using the ESP App.
What should he say to Hikotarou? This question without an answer occurred to him whenever he opened JUNGLE and saw messages from Hikotarou piling up.
Amidst his spiraling thoughts, Sukuna became someone who did nothing but fiddle with his PDA. After all, he was able to escape from this reality just by staring at the several lined-up missions in JUNGLE.
The reality was catching up quickly.
It was no coincidence that Sukuna had activated Grass Root at that moment. He was wary of his parents perhaps trying to force him out of the room if he kept shutting himself in it.
Only the security surveillance cameras of the lowest floor could be viewed on Grass Root, but it could detect if someone were to break through the door of his room. He had not decided what to do when that happened, but he imagined that he would likely have to use an item from the ESP App.
However, that did not happen.
The one projected in the surveillance camera was not the robust guard-man. It was a man clad in a wrinkly suit and a boy who he was bringing with him.
“Hikotarou? Why...?”
With the words that he had whispered in a daze, Sukuna awoke at once. There was no “why”. It was because his parents had found out that Hikotarou existed.
Sukuna felt goosebumps. He jumped out of bed and rushed to the door of his bedroom, but gave up on opening it.
There were lookouts on the other side. His mother had arranged a sleepless watch so that she could deal with Sukuna whenever he came out. If he came out, he would quickly be caught and transferred somewhere else. And then, he would never get to see Hikotarou again.
The door’s no good. I need a different means of escape—
He looked back. Outside the window, he could see the trunk of a garden tree about three meters away. Even if one jumped off the windowsill, they would not be able to reach it.
That was the case for ordinary humans. However, Sukuna was a JUNGLE player.
Taking out his PDA, he opened it without hesitation. He activated the item “physical strengthening”, which was within the power of L-rankers.
Instantaneously, a green electric current burst out from the PDA, ran through Sukuna’s whole body and then disappeared into thin air. However, that strength remained within Sukuna. Each time his heart struck a beat, a force that was not his own circulated his blood vessels, his muscles absorbing it.
A countdown appeared on his PDA. He did not know the reasoning behind it, but once this period was over, his power would be gone as well.
In short, he had no time to waste.
Sukuna opened the window and jumped up. The unbelievable jumping power more than compensated for the three meters. The momentum was so strong that he almost missed the tree trunk, spiraling around it when he reached out and clung to it. His eyes spinning from the gymnast-like maneuver, Sukuna jumped from branch to branch and landed as if rolling down.
Sukuna broke into a run barefoot.
It was not as if he could do anything by running. Sukuna’s parents would not listen to his opinions. Rather, they may consider Hikotarou even more dangerous as a cause of his rebellion against them.
However, he had a feeling that he would resent it for the rest of his life if he just watched the current situation with a finger in his mouth.
From the position of the surveillance cameras, he calculated the place where Hikotarou would be at right now. It was one of the normally unused reception rooms. He ran along the outer walls, taking a wide turn around the mansion. Holding onto the reception room’s window, he quietly peeked inside.
And so, Sukuna experienced a lifelong regret.
“Good job on your report,” his father said, sitting on an extravagant chair.
The middle-aged man and Hikotarou were standing opposite to him, on the other side of the office desk. The middle-aged man was giving his father a toadying smile. Hikotarou, standing next to him, was merely staring at his toes with a mask-like expressionless face.
Sukuna’s heart began to beat copiously fast. If he kept looking at this scene, he would lose something important. Even though he knew this, he was unable to take his eyes off it.
“You might be poor, but since you have enough brains to be able to talk to him as an equal, we have selected you to be his friend as a special case.”
Sukuna’s breath caught. The conversation he was hearing through the window was as vague as a nightmare, with no sense of reality to it.
“Make sure to do your job modest and humbly. I have already transferred this month’s payment.”
“Thank you very much! Hey, you show gratitude too.”
While bowing repeatedly, the middle-aged man put his hand on the back of Hikotarou’s head and squeezed it with force. Unresisting, Hikotarou let himself be handled and bowed his head. He weakly muttered incoherent words.
He was extending his gratitude. To Sukuna’s father. To the power of the Gojou household.
His father leaned his body against the backrest and looked down at the two. “However, your interactions seem to be going too far lately. My wife is worried that Sukuna might have become defiant due to bad influence from you.”
The face of the middle-aged man quickly turned pale.
“Who was it that put in word so that someone from the fallen Kue family could somehow attend that school? I would like you to be a bit more aware of that.”
“M-My deepest apologies! Hey, you!”
The middle-aged man grabbed Hikotarou’s head violently. Hikotarou let him do as he pleased. He was mumbling something – perhaps apologizing?
Enough already. I don’t wanna see any more of this.
He did not want to see Hikotarou – his friend – like that. Still, in the end, that “friend” was also nothing more than something those people had arranged for him.
After watching Hikotarou receive punishment for a moment, his father raised his hand. “Do that somewhere my eyes can’t reach.”
“Yes! I-I always—”
“Enough of that. Sukuna is what matters now.”
Hearing the name, Hikotarou sluggishly raised his head.
“He has been confining himself in his bedroom all the time lately. I called you here to convince Sukuna. Talk him into it and bring him out of his room.”
“O-Of course! Hiko! Get ready at once!”
“Hum.” At that moment, Hikotarou’s voice sounded clear for the first time. “Sukuna has been absent from school all this time... Is he sick or something like that?”
Snorting, Sukuna’s father narrowed his eyes as if to poke fun at Hikotarou. “There seems to be no problem with his health. Apparently, he had picked a stray cat recently. By the looks of it, he got angry because we disposed of it. Honestly, children are so...”
Hikotarou went stiff. His small hands balled into fists.
“If he wants a replacement, we can provide anything he wishes. So hurry and do something about this. It will be bad for our reputation if the current situation continues as it is.”
Hearing the words of his father, who thought of no one but himself, Sukuna slammed the windowsill with his hand, reinforced by JUNGLE’s superhuman abilities. The only one who noticed the sound was Hikotarou. His eyes alone moved, taking in Sukuna’s figure. Their gazes met for just an instant. Yet Sukuna would probably never forget those wide-open eyes.
Sukuna peeled his body away from the window. He had lost all reason to stay in that place.
The “physical strengthening” was still within its effect time. Making full use of that power, he ran. Tears spilled as he rushed through the estate’s garden.
That was the first friend he had made ever since he was born. For the first time ever since being born, he had admired someone and thought of him as even cooler than himself. He had taught Sukuna about many things. Such as the enormous power that he had never even imagined and a new world that he had never so much as noticed, even though it was lying right next to him. He deemed the memories of breathing in the air of freedom and of playing around shoulder-to-shoulder with him as brightly sparkling jewels.
However, they were not jewels but glass marbles arranged for him by the adults.
He had nothing. The resounding beating of his heart, the new world that shone so vividly – everything had disappeared. Right now, the all that surrounded Sukuna were adults so filthy they made him want to throw up, as well as the fakes they had provided for him—
No.
“That’s not true,” Sukuna muttered little by little.
At the same time, an electronic voice echoed from the PDA in his hand, “The effect time of item ‘Physical Strengthening’ has expired. If you wish to extend the effect time, please add extra JUNGLE Points—”
“Extend effect.”
“Voiceprint authentication confirmed. Consuming JUNGLE Points in order to maintain effect duration.”
Hikotarou was a fake. A fake that his parents had prepared for him. Whenever he was with Sukuna or whenever he laughed, he had been probably making a fool out of Sukuna deep down.
Nevertheless, it was not as if everything was fake.
Only this power, JUNGLE, was real. True strength. A tangible world. Beyond that window, a new world was spreading out. That was the sole truth.
And right now, having wiped the tears away, Sukuna was seeing yet another world.
In that world, Sukuna was free. Sukuna was lonely. Having lost his only friend, Sukuna figured that there was no longer anything chaining him to that place now. The exciting world that he had once had a glimpse of together with Hikotarou was lost forever, and the only thing spreading out before Sukuna was a desolated, perishing world.
Yet he had no options anymore but to jump into it.
Strengthening this resolve, Sukuna set forth while gritting his back teeth.
◆
On the day that Sukuna used JUNGLE’s superhuman abilities to the fullest, stealing everything he could take and vanishing from the Gojou house, a large number of thieves attacked Uwagami Town.
Multiple government officials’ homes were raided at the same time. After suppressing the police officers guarding them as if it were nothing, the thieves robbed all houses of information related to secrets of the state and disappeared into the back streets and alleys of Uwagami Town.
The Metropolitan Police Department identified the case as a large-scale beta case due to the clear criminal techniques and the testimony of police officers describing them as “physical abilities that would usually be impossible”. The command of the investigation was transferred to Scepter 4.
Sukuna only came to know about it much later.

The Realization of Importance
Part (2/3)
This was in my drafts for so long... So I thought not to let the cliffhanger stay for more time.
A/N: This is to say that all the characters and the main story line belong to Voltage Inc. Only the fictional story is a work of mine, as well the fictional characters, Hana, Touma and Akari. Also this story is based on dream event, because I had this as a dream many days ago. It might be a little different from the usual genre, a little more angsty, so this little girl wants to know your honest opinions about the work. Be honest and do let me know what you think. But, if it feels a little bit dreamy or weird, you can discontinue reading from here.
Part 1 II Part 3
Part (2/3)
Okay, now that I have cried so much and wiped away my tears, it's time to figure out things. How this all happened, or maybe I am still snoozing.
MC: But first, I need to find somewhere to live for now...
I can't probably return to my apartment, because the other me might be living there. Even if I go there, I will feel awkwardness surrounding me. So, I decide to take shelter in Asuka's home for tonight.
[Asuka’s Home]
{A/N: This is not shown in the MS, so I just added a fictional place}
A surprised Asuka greets me at the door.
Asuka: MC?
MC: Hey Asuka, if it's not troublesome, can I stay here for the night?
Asuka: Of course, come in.
Relieved that Asuka didn't doubt me, I put the slippers on and sit on the sofa in the living room.
Asuka: Color me surprised though, what brings you here, and today itself?
MC: Hmm? Can't I visit your home and stay over like we did in university days? I was just hit with nostalgia and-
Asuka: That's not the case. Didn't you tell me during lunch that you and Dr. Kasumi are going home together for the first time in two weeks of exhaustive work?
MC: ...
Now that I think about it, I arrived here in the evening, so it might be possible that I didn't know about the schedule beforehand. For now, I have to find an excuse to convince her.
MC: Err... yeah! Kasumi had some post-OP scheduled with new interns, so he told me to leave early, but due to the weather...
Wiping my hair and damp clothes with a towel, Asuka nods her head as if she understood what I meant.
Asuka: Poor girl... You could just have given a call, so that I could have rushed there.
MC: Asukaa!! You are literally my paradis-
Asuka: But, that would have caused Dr. Kasumi to blame me for stealing his girl.
MC: Wha?
With her light banter, we both break out into a laughter. She is really a savior to me, even though she doesn’t know the situation now.
Getting into a pair of PJs that Asuka gave me, I lie down on the sofa. Events of the day start reeling in my mind. Now’s the time to figure out what exactly happened. Is it just a dream? But it’s too realistic... Or what if I am thrown to another world, just like what happens in mangas?
A little bit confused, I open up to do list on my cell phone to check the schedule, but the next sight leaves me agape.
MC: I am a new resident in cardiovascular surgery starting from tomorrow?!
And my name is not MC, it’s... Hana? Well, it’s better this way, as anyone will not get confused anymore. After all, I am someone who is not meant to be here...
MC: Gahh! I will think about it tomorrow, otherwise who knows what will happen to my brain... I might as well get an ischemic stroke in this situation.
Putting a lid to my thoughts, I doze off to sleep.
{A/N: From here, actual MC is Hana, and the other MC is just MC. I just came with a random name for the MC.}
~
Sekai: MC, you will be all fine... Don’t worry...
Hana: Aww Sekai, thank you... You really are my- wait what? Why are you addressing me as MC?
With a shock, I sit up.
Hana: Just a dream, huh... Guess I better hurry up.
With a short yawn, I prepare for the day.
[Morning: Dean’s Office]
Matsunaga: ...and therefore you will be assigned in the cardiovascular surgery starting from today.
Hana: ...
Matsunaga: Hana?
Hana: ! Ye-yes! I completely understand. It is a pleasure to be working with you all.
I bow deeply.
Matsunaga: Though I have to say, you really look like Dr. MC. Are you sure that you are not her long lost twin sister?
Hana: It’s a pure coincidence, haha. But I have a way to recognize both of us!
Matsunaga: Oh?
Hana: Yes. Look at this!
I show him the pearl beaded hair pin in my hair. I bought it when I went to the zoo with Kasumi. But, he might not remember this too.
Matsunaga: That’s a great way. You are really a smart girl!
Smiling on the approval, I bow once again, and leave the office to my work.
On my way to Cardiovascular medicine department, I decide to take a turn towards the EICU. After all the act I put there, I should at least apologize properly. It doesn’t matter if Kasumi doesn’t remember me now. Even though it hurts me to change my behavior towards him, just like strangers for now, I can never let the boy who suffered so much to lose his smile once again. Now, only my job matters!
[Seimei University Hospital EICU]
As expected, everyone is there for the morning briefing, including the other me. I take a deep breath and knock on the door, making all of their gazes turn towards me. The confusion would have all been over now.
Hana: Good morning, everyone. I am here to apologize for the mess I created here yesterday. I am sure I had hit my head somewhere yesterday that I-
Takado: Can I tell you a copycat? You are exactly the same as this one over here, talking without stopping...
Hana: ...
They didn’t blame me for yesterday. I guess that’s good for now.
Hosho: I am now starting to believe that miracles are true.
Hana: Wha?
Hosho: Yes. I have never in my life met people with such exact features. It’s interesting but confusing at the same time.
Hana: Oh, about that, I have a solution! Look at the hair-pin tucked here. You will recognize me. And it’s not like I will work in the EICU. I have been assigned to the Cardiovascular Surgery from today. So I will rarely visit here.
Kasumi: Oh.
What makes him say that... Well, I can’t think of that myself. Maybe his curiosity is piqued, that’s all.
Kyogoku: Drop by the Pediatrics if you need any help.
MC: We would appreciate your help in the ER too.
Ok, now what? WHAT THE WHAT?! The legendary bodyguard is lending me a hand if I get in any trouble? And the other me... she is like 100 times more sweeter than me. No wonder Kasumi deserves a better one like her, not someone like me who behaves like a child till now.
Ekuni: And, if you run out of snacks, I can recommend you some.
Why are they all so sweet? Keeping my fast beating heart to myself, I mutter a small ‘thanks’, bow once again and leave the EICU. But, I feel a gaze looking at me from behind. Maybe I am hallucinating...
[Seimei University Hospital Cardiovascular Medicine Department]
After some greetings in the Cardiovascular Surgery Dept., I get to work at once. Apparently due my good grades here too, I am immediately handed a case of a surgery.
The patient is 11 year old, who is admitted today morning, has tetralogy of Fallot. This disease is generally congenital, which causes cyanosis, that is, bluish skin and oxygen-poor blood to flow out of the heart and to the rest of the body. If treatment is not done soon, it may become more severe.
Without any other delay, I head to the cabin where Touma is. Oh yes, Touma is the patient whose case I have been handed now.
[Seimei University Hospital Private Cabin]
When I enter the cabin, I see a gloom Touma sitting on the bed with his mother, Akari.
Hana: Good morning, Akari, Touma.
Akari: Good morning, Dr. Hana.
Even though she smiles, I can see her face washed with sadness. It’s okay, after handing so many cases with Kasumi, I have stabilized myself enough to deal with my anxiety. I reach out to her, and with my hand on her back, I look towards Touma, who is also a little bit scared.
Hana: How are you, Touma?
Touma: I- I am fine.
Hana: I know you came here way early in the morning. How about we go and get a drink for ourselves to cheer you up?
A little happy, he nods.
Touma’s treatment is starting from today afternoon, so luckily, saline and other devices have not been put on him for now. Means, he is free to move.
Holding his frail hand, I lead him to the refreshment zone.
[Refreshment zone]
I grab myself a can of coffee and give a bottle of orange juice to him.
Hana: So, what is Touma’s favorite activity? Hana is curious.
Touma: I like gardening, and going sightseeing.
Hana: Oh? You know how to plant flowers?
Touma: Yeah! Not only that, I know how to plant vegetables and fruits too! You know Hana, I harvested a lot of fruits, like strawberries, grapes last year that we had my friends and mama’s friends to finish it up.
Seeing Touma’s eyes sparkling, confiding in me and trusting me by calling my first name, I couldn’t help but smile.
Hana: Wow! You are really talented, little one! What about sightseeing? What places do you like?
Touma: I like Hokkaido. The weather there is so beautiful! But... I know I couldn’t do that after the surgery.
The little sun who was brimming just now with happiness, looks like the flame of a flickering candle.
I hold his hand and say.
Hana: I know you can do it. With me here, you can share anything you want. You are strong to handle every problem that comes to you. I can get that from your passion of gardening. Even if a storm comes, you can do anything to protect your little space, right? I want that confidence of yours in you too.
Touma goes silent. I see his face, surprised, and a little... flushed?
Touma: I brought some dandelions for you, Hana. I thought they could be my thank you gift to you for listening to me.
Hana: Thank you. That’s so sweet of you.
Oh my god. How sweet and mature he is! I was not even half of it during my teenage.
Touma: But, I have a favor to ask.
Hana: Sure, as long as it’s in my reach, I can do it for you.
Touma: After I recover, can you visit with me somewhere?
Hana: Where to?
Touma: I want to show you my garden.
Hana: Oh, sure. I would love to!
The happiness that left his face comes back.
Touma: It’s a date, then!
Hana: ...
What did I hear now? A. DATE. What?! But sighing, I put away the awkward thought and my lips curve upwards.
Touma: Although... Who is that guy behind you?
Surprised that I didn’t notice anyone, I turn backwards and see...
Hana: ?!!
~
This got a bit long, so I broke it further into two parts. Last part is on the last phase of editing. I will try to post it by tomorrow. Who do you think stands behind Hana? What will happen next?
Stay tuned.

Gochiusa BLOOM episode 7 impressions
Previously: 6 - 5 - 4 - 3 - 2 - 1
In real world Halloween might have been a month ago, but in the world of Is The Order a Rabbit it’s exactly the season for all things spooky. And maybe things become a little too supernatural for a slice of life show. In the last episode we’ve seen how BLOOM symbolizes the growth of the characters. And as we enter the second half of the season, another meaning is revealed...
But first let’s visit Ama Usa An, where horror-loving Chiya is decorating the traditional Japanese teahouse for Halloween. Since Halloween is decidedly not a traditional Japanese holiday, it looks kinda surreal, but Chiya’s grandmother is more worried about souls of the dead coming back to life, especially that of Chino’s grandfather (see season 2 episode 9 for more of their backstory). Of course the soul of Chino’s grandfather isn’t actually dead, but is inhabiting the body of a rabbit. It’s not clear how exactly this happened and Cocoa might have been involved.
Speaking of Cocoa, we see her practicing with the magic set she bought in the first episode of the season. She tries to make something appear in her hand, but nothing happens. Clearly you can’t just learn to summon matter into existence in Gochiusa world, or can you? Anyway the shot focuses on a candy laying on a table before the opening sequence cuts in. This must be the object Cocoa has tried to summon and it’s also clearly a foreshadowing for something.
Meanwhile, Maya and Megu are trick-or-treating in matching werewolf(?) outfits hoping to score some free candy. Interestingly the tradition of giving out candy on Halloween has descended from a medieval practice of sharing so-called “soul cakes” which represented the souls of the dead.
Meanwhile the staff of Rabbit House are dressed as vampires. The theme of vampires fighting werewolves brings up to mind the Twilight series although I’m sure the idea came up many times throughout history. If you look closer, you’ll notice that Cocoa, Rize and Megu have fake fangs (I think Maya’s is natural), although they’re not consistently drawn between scenes, even though in the manga they’re drawn correctly. Maybe they’ll fix this in BD. The only one whose fang is not shown is Chino, and ironically she is the one who actually bites somebody.
Also the flashback of Chino “roaring” at the mirror reminded me of the scene from Celestial Method where Noel (also voiced by Minase Inori) roars at a dinosaur standee. To be fair it sounds completely different but I just can’t help but compare them.
Also while I was browsing through my copy of volume 6 I found a cute illustration card that seems to be relevant to this episode, but includes Mocha and Cocoa as the wolves and Chino as the vampire (here’s a highres version).
I think I bought this particular volume in Japan on the day it was released. Good times...
Next MaMe go to Fleur de Lapin and are greeted by Sharo dressed as Little Red Riding Hood (bunny version). This costume appeared earlier in an illustration for the rabbit chapter from the previous episode.
This is also a rare scene where other employees of Fleur de Lapin can be seen, as usually Sharo is shown working there alone. Even in the manga, Sharo is the only employee shown in this scene. In the end it turns out that Sharo is a wolf in disguise and craving for some meat. Which is weird because Sharo hasn’t been shown eating or cooking any meat before.
Anyway, next stop is Ama Usa An, which is called the Witch’s Mansion now. Chiya mentions the beginning of the Sabbath, and the manga chapter’s title 今宵は甘兎サバト also mentions the Sabbath. This might be confusing because in Judaism and Christianity the Sabbath is the day of rest and happens weekly (on Saturday or Sunday). However since we’re talking about witches, this actually references the Wiccan concept of sabbat, or one of eight festivals in the Wiccan calendar. In particular, Samhain, one of the four Greater Sabbats pretty much coincides with Halloween and celebrates the beginning of winter.
Chiya does this thing where the protagonist’s hand hurts only to awaken their dark powers, I’m not really sure where this trope comes from but I’ve seen it referenced in anime before and it’s a common chuunibyo stereotype. In this case, Chiya did really just hurt her hand. There’s also some sort of runic circle drawn on her bandages, but if you look closer it says shiratama anmitsu matcha parfait in hiragana.
Maya and Megu agree to help Chiya, and become her “familiars”. Even though familiars are better known as a video game mechanic today (which is what the “level up” scene references), witches were associated with familiar spirits since medieval times. A familiar often took form of a small animal, such as a cat. Unfortunately MaMe don’t even know which animal they are, so clearly they didn’t take their backstory as seriously as Chiya did. Their ears and tails look canine to me, so I can see Megu being a fox spirit, but Maya being a cat is less believable. Also during their confrontation Megu confirms that Maya’s fang is her yaeba (snaggle tooth).
As a revenge for the trick MaMe pulled on her, Chiya gives them a selection of pumpkin tarts, one of which is laced with wasabi (which she calls ”Russian roulette”). This seems like a common thing for her, since she did the same with botamochi in season 2 episode 6, and with green tea in season 2 episode 7 (except she used aojiru instead of wasabi). However this time, it was Chiya’s grandmother who put wasabi in two of the tarts, unbeknownst to Chiya. By the way in the manga it wasn’t shown that Chiya got one of the wasabi tarts.
Chiya goes shopping for some pumpkins, but is helped by Rize, and later Sharo gives her anti-pain medications, reminding her of how Chiya tended for her when she was sick in season 1 episode 12. It’s not mentioned in the anime, but Rize also had a “motivation” for helping Chiya, as she hurt her leg before (see season 2 episode 2). Chiya invites Rize and Sharo to dinner and brings up the wasabi-laced pumpkin tarts. According to Chiya the probability of getting wasabi is 1/3. Initially there were 7 tarts, of which 2 had wasabi. Megu, Maya and Chiya eat one each, with Chiya’s having wasabi in it. That leaves 4 tarts with 1 wasabi, so either Chiya’s calculation is incorrect, or somebody ate one more tart.
Apparently last day was just a warm up to Halloween (All Hallow’s Eve’s Eve?), so next day Megu and Maya come to Chiya again and try to summon something. A larger and slightly different version of the runic circle previously seen on Chiya’s hand starts glowing and we see that the 3 white rabbits correspond to three people holding hands. There’s also Anko corresponding to the black rabbit in the middle. By the way, in the manga the sign on Chiya’s hand was just a hexagram, and the summoning ritual didn’t have any visible symbols.
Anyway, they want to summon a messenger from demon world/hell, and coincidentally Cocoa and Chino come in (dressed as vampires) and try to attack (cuddle) them. Chiya, Maya and Megu form New Chimame-tai which works because Chiya and Chino have the same first syllable. However Chi is written with kanji instead of katakana in this version (because Chiya’s name 千夜 is one of the few given names among Gochiusa characters that’s always written with kanji). This defeats Chino, and Chiya consoling Chino like a big sister defeats Cocoa as well.
Ok let’s move on to part B, which is the really important part of the episode. The streets of the town are filled with people dressed in various costumes. Cocoa’s classmates can be seen among the crowd, and Aoyama and Rin are enjoying a boat ride on River Sanzu.
Our main character have also prepared some new costumes for the occasion. First we see Chino, dressing up as Phantom Thief Lapin, while Rize is going as a police officer. Soon Chiya and Sharo join them, who somehow independently of each other also went with a Lapin costume. At least Sharo had a good excuse. For Chiya, Lapin’s gloves obscure the bandage on her hand, so maybe that’s why she chose this costume. But what about Cocoa?
Well, she kinda got lost and we find her at the location that you will recognize if you read my episode 5 review. Cocoa says it looks a little different than usual, almost like a different world (isekai). Well, there’s a lot of evidence to support this hypothesis. First, in a scene that parallels episode 1, Cocoa finds a lost child and tries to calm her down with a magic trick. However you might notice that the child’s head is literally a pumpkin with a moving mouth.
And her mother is also a pumpkinhead. Cocoa doesn’t encounter any other people during this segment, even though you’d think a spot that overlooks the town like this would be quite popular. Well, she does encounter one more person, a mysterious masked magician with an angora rabbit on her head. She also wears a G-clef pendant indicating some sort of music connection.
Now, since y’all had already watched the episode, it wouldn’t be a spoiler to say that this is the ghost of Chino’s mother, Saki. The rabbit on her head is the ghost of the original Tippy before its body was taken over by Chino’s grandfather. The original Tippy was a female rabbit, by the way, a fact established early on in the series. In Sing for You OVA (for which I wrote a not-very-detailed review by the way) it’s established that Saki was a singer and even had a record released.
Anyway, as a ghost, Saki doesn’t speak (although she still can giggle and such) and doesn’t physically interact with Cocoa (only indirectly, by casting candies at Cocoa). Nevertheless she does teach Cocoa how to do the candy trick correctly.
Meanwhile, the rest of the group tries to call Cocoa’s phone but she doesn’t answer. This is another evidence for isekai theory. Cocoa is just out of range, you see. Rize and Sharo swap their costumes (the most unrealistic part of the episode) and Sharo starts “policing” the Lapins on how the real Lapin would talk. Chiya has a bright idea to shout out for Cocoa and call her big sister. However Cocoa would obviously only react if Chino calls her that, so Rize encourages Chino to say it louder (referencing her training for the choir in Sing for You).
Cocoa and Saki hear Chino, and Saki looks at her daughter from the terrace. Chino also looks up... but doesn’t see anything. She does get a hunch that there’s something up there though, so the group finds Cocoa eventually. Meanwhile Saki feels like her time is up and makes for a quick exit, literally disappearing.
This is where Cocoa returns to the “real world”, as the current Tippy calls out for her. Why was Tippy with Cocoa anyway in the first place? Cocoa looks around and there are in fact lots of people there as expected.
Cocoa thinks that Tippy speaking is an evidence of a ghost, despite her interacting with a real ghost just a few moments before. The 3 Lapins arrive and start arguing who is the real Lapin. Chino says that it’s the one who gets away with everything in the end, implying she will take the whole Cocoa for herself. However Sharo arrests Cocoa for making everyone worry.
On the way back, Chiya recalls the legend which was also mentioned by her grandmother at the beginning of the episode about the spirits of the ancestors coming back for this one day and then returning to heavens. Chino looks up to the sky, while Tippy gives her a solace in the fact that he was once again turned away, implying that he expected to return to heaven with the other spirits.
Tippy also seemed to know what Cocoa was talking about in an earlier scene where Cocoa said she forgot to give thanks to somebody. Just what’s up with Tippy and why is he not allowed to enter Heaven is a big mystery here.
Cocoa also notices Chino being distressed and shows her the magic trick with the candy. It turns out Chino remembers this trick from her childhood, and we get to see a full flashback with Chino’s mother even getting a few speaking lines (delivered by none other but Nana Mizuki). Since the candy was probably a part of the magic set, it’s no coincidence that it has the exact same wrapper in the flashback. The color of the candy matches with Chino’s clothes at the time but you can also think of it as a combination of Saki’s white and Chino’s blue.
By the way, in the manga Cocoa conjures up two candies, and they have a plain wrapping so there wasn’t One Specific Candy like in the anime. Also in the flashback, Chino is carried by her grandfather. His face is not shown, but Takahiro is seen in the background (with Rize’s dad) so by exclusion it had to be him. And in the current scene Chino is the one carrying Tippy like this.
The episode ends with Cocoa asking Chino to tell her more about her mother, while a star is seen rising in the sky, presumably symbolizing Saki’s spirit.
Let’s go back to Cocoa meeting Saki scene one more time. Like I explained, it’s heavily implied that Cocoa isn’t really in the same world as the other characters when she meets Saki’s ghost. Of course Gochiusa had supernatural elements from the start, such as a certain talking rabbit who happens to be Chino’s grandfather. But now we have a ghost of Chino’s mother and Cocoa is the only one who can see her, but Chino can’t? Just what the heck is going on here?
But wait, there is a rational explanation for all of this! Cocoa had a hallucination triggered by all the Halloween celebrations. She imagines helping a lost child just like Chino did before (and told Cocoa about it later) and then imagines the ghost of Saki teaching her magic, because subconsciously she wants to be like Saki. She had seen Saki before on a photograph, but haven’t heard her speak, which is why the ghost can’t talk to her. Hearing Chino call her onee-chan brings Cocoa back to her senses. But how did Cocoa learn the trick if it was just her imagination? Well, consider the fact that she was practicing this exact trick at the beginning of the episode. By the time she shows it to Chino, she has already practiced it a lot of times, but maybe she only realized the crucial part (feint) during the hallucination. Either way, the blue striped candy wasn’t given to Cocoa by Saki, she had it from the start, as part of the magic set! The candies that Saki uses to show the trick to Cocoa all disappear when Cocoa returns to reality.
Saki appears one more time in the bar time scene with Takahiro, who is listening to her record Silver Spoon from Sing for You OVA and then calls her by name. I think this is the only time the name “Saki” is mentioned in the show itself, and it’s not mentioned in the manga at all (unless maybe in some recent chapters which I haven’t read yet). The first time it was revealed was during April Fool’s day Clockwork Rabbit event, as a solution to a “puzzle”. Her name is written in katakana as サキ, however one of possible readings of the word “saki” is 咲き which means “bloom”. Now consider how the last few seconds of the opening animation it cuts from a blooming field of dandelions to Saki:
The dandelions connection to Saki was previously seen in season 2 episode 1 and Sing for You. Saki’s character design doesn’t really say “blooming of dandelions” to me, but consider that a dandelion turns into this:
Now that’s more like it! Although it reminds me of Tippy as well. Anyway, that was a very mysterious episode of Gochiusa BLOOM and let’s see what happens next! Only 5 episodes remain...

Survey #357
“your magic white rabbit has left its writing on the wall / we follow like alice, and just keep diving down the hole”
Are you better at telling stories or writing them? Writing, by a long shot. What’s one song you hate, but know every word to? i'm a barbie girl in a fckn barbie woooooorld What’s your favorite magazine? I don’t read magazines. If you could be an animal for one day, which animal would you choose? Probably a house cat. Be indoors and safe, able to just nap... lol. But I'd want another cat as a friend, too! Do you prefer outdoor or indoor concerts/events? Indoors, by a mile. I get hot outside way too easily. Do you know if you were a planned child? I don't know. What’s your favorite gem? Dragon's breath opal. As an adult, do you want to live in an apartment or a house? I'd like to live in a house, especially with the pets I want. I doubt many apartment complexes would allow multiple reptiles and inverts. Do you like the stem or leafy part of the broccoli? It doesn't matter much to me, but I prefer the stem. The texture is more likeable to me. Do bats frighten you? No, I adore bats! Does Paris appeal to you? Yeah, it's a pretty place. Are you a KPOP fan? No, I've never really checked it out. How long was your longest relationship? Over three and a half years. First time you kissed the last person you kissed? We were outside roasting marshmallows one night. Do you have to really know someone to kiss them? Absolutely. I don't dish 'em out for nothing. Were you anyone’s first kiss? No. If you had to be named after one of the 50 states of America, what state would you WANT to be named after? I actually think "Nevada" would be kinda pretty as a name? Do you think morals are universal or relative to the beliefs, traditions, or practices of individuals or groups? I've wondered this for a long while, really. I lean towards it being a mix, maybe? But more towards universal, I think... with some exceptions. This answer is all over the place, I honestly don't know. Is torture ever a good option? If no, why not? If yes, when? No? I think the "why not" is obvious... You just don't. What do you think is one one of the most undervalued professions right now? Teachers, garbagemen, retail and food workers... There's a lot. Have you ever seen anyone have a heart attack? Thank Christ no. Have you personalized your answering machine/voicemail? No. Have you ever had Fiji brand water? I actually don't believe I have, though it's always looked appealing to me, haha. What’s your favorite horror movie? The Crazies and the first Silent Hill, as well as both Blair Witch Projects. What was the worst thing a friend has either done or said to you? I'd rather not even think about things the bitch said to me. Are you biracial? No. When was the last time you got mad and broke something? I've never broken something when mad. What color dress did you wear to prom? My first was maroon, second one was black. Who is the cutest baby you know? My friend has a daughter named Scarlett who is absolutely gorgeous. Have you ever thrown a rock at a window? No, because I respect people's fucking property. Has anyone ever thrown a rock at your window? No. Does your hair react well to dye, or does it damage it? It likes to not take dye at all. >.> I have only had one instance where a friend dyed it red and it stuck for months and months, but we kept it in for a couple hours, I think. My normal hairdresser says it's because my hair is really healthy and I guess rejects it. What kind of pet do you wish you had? I ramble plenty about how I want tarantulas and more reptiles, haha. I also DESPERATELY want to rescue or foster an opossum. When was the last time you were diagnosed with something? Are you concerned about anything regarding your physical or mental health at the moment? I haven't been diagnosed with anything in quite some time, I believe, but as I'm going through the process of being approved for TMS therapy for my depression, my bipolar diagnosis is being questioned, which is... strange to me. It's been acknowledged by many a doctor that I have bipolar 2, but if insurance recognizes my primary diagnosis as bipolar, they won't cover TMS because it can massively excite the mania portion of bipolarity, and therefore I can't do it because we can't manually afford it. I'm willing to take the risk by far, as I've never had issues with mania, but I can't without insurance. I'm just waiting to hear back from them... What is one blanket judgment you tend to make about people (like, you judge all people who live at home, all people who drink, etc)? Does this judgment come from a particular personal experience? I really don't know. How do you react to other people yelling or slamming doors? Is this something you ever do too? I get very scared if it's a man. I don't like anyone doing it, and my anxiety will spike regardless, I'm just terrified of angry men. Have you ever lost your cool at work or somewhere else important? What happened as a result? No. Who has the power to break you? Jason still might. I don't know. Is anyone in your family blind? My sister is legally blind in one eye. Do you believe in evolution? Yeah. I do find the concept odd, that ALL LIFE originated from one thing, but I sure ain't got a better explanation, so. What job do you think people should be paid the most for? Surgeons, maybe? I dunno, that's a big question. Were you ever held back a year in school? Did you ever skip a grade? No. Have you ever been given a hickey? Have you given one? Yeah to both. What is your least favourite thing about your full name? I have the most basic white bitch middle name in the world, lol. Do you like the age you are? Eh, I don't mind it much, but I think it'd be better to be in my early 20s versus mid 20s. I'm just always so tired now. I can't believe I used to refuse to go to sleep before 10:30. What’s your favourite kind of poptart? The chocolate sundae one. If you had to eat one type (Chinese, etc.) of food which would it be? American bc I'm not very adventurous with food at all. When did your family immigrate to wherever you live now? *shrug* Are your fingers long, or short? Long. Mom's always said I have "piano fingers." Do you play Pokemon Go? If so, what level are you and who’s your buddy? Yeah, I love it, but don't play it nearly as much as I want because I don't exactly go anywhere, lol. My bud's Charmeleon, and I'm probably like five EXP from level 28. Do you ever sit indoors and wear sunglasses or a hat? I don't own either, so. Do you know how to read animals’ behavior? I honestly think I'm very good at it. Do you like playing video games? If so, what do you usually play? Yes, but not as much as I used to. All I really play nowadays is World of Warcraft. The only working console I have is a PS2, and I haven't bought a new game in probably a couple years, but there are definitely ones I want to play, mainly on PS4. Just can't afford it right now. Have you ever viewed the moon through a telescope? No. Do you know how to properly eat food with chopsticks? No. There's no way I could, given my tremors. Do you prefer reading books, comic books, manga/graphic novels, magazines, or the newspaper? Books. When is the last time you ate donuts? It's been months, man. I've seriously been craving a glazed one, though. Krispy Kreme sounds amaaaaaziiiiiing. Has anyone ever called you sexy? Somehow. Do you like raisins? NO NO NO NO NO. Have you ever overheard a conversation you weren’t supposed to? More than once. Do you like ants? They're genuinely extremely fascinating animals, but they're seriously annoying nevertheless. Did you like the movie Antz? I loved it as a kid. What was your favorite ice cream flavor when you were little? Chocolate. Is it still your favorite? Eh, depends on the day. By the way, what is your name? Brittany. What time zone do you live in? EST. Do you like cats? I love cats. What’s the most creepy experience you’ve ever had? One night when my mom and sister were at the beach for a dance competition, I was having trouble sleeping, and it only got worse when my dog Teddy started freaking the fuck out, barking loudly and staring intently at the foot of the bed. I was so scared that I tried to force his head to lie down, but he fought against me. I was terrified, but got up out of the bed and went into the living room to call my mom at like 3 in the damn morning, and she had to have our neighbor come over to sleep in the house with me (I was in a different room that night). You can't convince me that there wasn't paranormal shit going on. I think the house was haunted honestly, for multiple reasons. What’s the most boring game to exist? Why do you dislike it so much? Hm, I dunno. What’s the coolest place that you've ever been to? What’d you do there? Disney World was very memorable as a kid. We just went around collecting signatures, going on rides, all that fun stuff. I'll never forget fireworks at the castle. If you’re interested in having a long-term relationship with someone, do you think that waiting a certain amount of time before you first have sex is a good idea? Or does it not matter? I think it's a good idea, personally, mostly for the sake of reducing the spread of STDs. Just because you think you'll be long-term, doesn't mean you will be. Besides that, isn't there a science that sex and feelings of love are connected? Like, sex is impossible without at least some underlying emotions? I might be entirely wrong, in which case forgive me for spreading misinformation, but if that's so and things don't go as planned, you've gotten emotionally invested in someone too early and wind up getting hurt. You do you, I just don't think it's smart. Have you ever discovered something big by looking through someone’s phone, Facebook, email, etc.? No. Have you kept anything from your past relationships? (Things they left at your house, gifts, notes, etc) Do you think that’s a big deal for future relationships or not? Yeah, like plushies and little stuff like that. When it's tiny things like I just mentioned, I really don't think it matters. I think some things might be questionable to keep, but at the same time, I don't think it's really wrong to keep memories of a happy time, if the thing still brings you joy and has been emotionally disconnected from the ex? Idk. Do you have any financial regrets? Either way, what’s an example of a GOOD financial decision you’ve made? Going to and dropping out of college three fucking times. I don't know about a good financial decision seeing as I'm not even in charge of my own finances, nor really have any to begin with. Are you a believer in “signs” from the Universe about things in your life? If you are, can you think of a particular example? No. Name some things that one or both of your parents are really good at or really interested in. Mom LOVES medical stuff, like watching surgeries and stuff like that. She is also absolutely incredible with children. Dad likes sports a lot, hockey and football especially. Think of a good friend of the opposite sex (currently or in the past). Have you ever had any sort of “more than a friend” or sexual thoughts about them? If not, can you explain why? Well, we dated briefly, so... It was awkward to, but I let myself imagine sexual situations a few times to help myself understand if I really did like-like him, or if he was truly just a brother to me. Turns out, he's a bro. If someone told you that you would never achieve something and you ended up doing it, would you have any interest in finding that person and showing them? I'ma be honest, yes. I wouldn't actively seek them out, but rather just hope they somehow find out or I run into them or something. What is the most jealousy-induced thing you’ve ever done? Apparently, be the girl Juan liked instead of this girl that literally threatened to deck me. Guess what? We're friends now lmaoooo.

I just saw some interesting question on Twitter and thought of asking you bc, ya know, ur great So the question is as the following: why do you think Bruno recruited Abba exactly when he could’ve picked anyone else? I mean it’s already kinda mysterious since in the manga no one mentions anything about this and the anime just threw in that rain scene tho it’s non canon but it still doesn’t really say much about their relationship prior to that scene and how Bruno knew about Abba
IMO it comes down to chance, and the other person being somewhat distinguished when the chance comes.
We see this with Fugo. We learn Bruno has decided to form a team, so he’s on the lookout for any person he deems a good addition to the team. He happened upon Fugo at the restaurant and recognized his intellect. So Bruno uses that chance encounter to persuade Fugo to join.
When it came to Abbacchio the following could have happened.
Bruno has already moved to Naples (a while back, while Abba was still in the workforce or school). We also know from his backstory he was a very devoted member of Passione: from a very young age he tried hard bc that’s how he bought Passione’s protection for his dad. That’s why later on he feels very betrayed by Diavolo: Bruno did give his all.
So even before Bruno decided to become a capo, he was an active member in Naples (likely winning Polpo’s support). Living in Naples he must have known the neighborhoods and possibly the police force. Maybe not by name, but he knew what kind of corruption each region was known for. For example, policemen near the airport let people like Giorno scam tourists. Maybe Abbacchio’s section is in charge of keeping order at night: a lot of bribes for illegal activities etc.
Also when a policeman is shot and killed, it must make at least local news. So everyone in town would know this guy ended up dead and his partner quit. I don’t know if anyone interviewed Abbacchio, at least to have a version of the events: the guy jumped to protect me from getting shot-- I’m now quitting the force. That in itself would have been interesting: why would a policeman quit, since it comes with the job: your partners may die. Maybe it attracted Bruno’s attention since he’s sharply looking for people to add to his team. And an ex-cop is very valuable to the mafia: training + connections and insight into the police/law.
We also know that right after quitting Abbacchio becomes an alcoholic. I don’t know if Bruno frequents bars that often, but let’s assume by chance he went to a bar one day and finds this guy drinking his heart out as usual. Abbacchio may have let out his life-story and Bruno adds 2 and 2: it’s the cop from the news or newspaper. And Abbacchio may have talked how he took the bribe and that’s why the partner died.
Now Bruno got very lucky this time. He happened to come across a man who’s very devoted (he had this idealistic view of the police-force and was so hurt by the unfair death of his partner he quit). Plus he’s a very strong and already-trained in combat, and like I said ex-cops are valuable to the mafia. Furthermore, Abbacchio has hit rock bottom, so if Bruno can persuade him to join his team Abbacchio will be forever grateful.
It won’t be hard to track the guy (word of mouth + mafia connections). Maybe Bruno shows up at the same bar a few more times, and learns more about Abbacchio. Eventually he shows up at his door step, saying: I will give you a reason to live in exchange for your loyalty and duty to me. Obviously Abbacchio will take his hand: he has hit rock-bottom and was a chance to atone for his bribes and killing his partner. Even if it’s the mafia, if he does right by one man, he can give his life meaning.
I know it sounds like Bruno is manipulating the situation and he is. He’s using all the weak points against Abbacchio to persuade him to join. And let’s face it, it’s the mafia, Bruno will do what he can to form a strong team. You want the best people after all, one way or another. But I also think he saw the loyalty and strength Abbacchio had and did sincerely think he could become something: they all had ambition to raise in ranks, even though it was the mafia world.
