Leif leaves his gift to Laslow to be carried by messenger owl today. The day of, the aviary friend swoops around, locating the man and dropping off a bouquet and notecard for him before flying off again.

The bouquet itself is a colorful affair. It features flowers from all over the rainbow. Marigolds, sunflowers, begonias, geraniums... the whole works. Their scent is fresh and their vivid colors pull the eye in their large assortment. That it could fit in the bundle at all, looking as fit to bursting as it does, is a feat in itself.

The attached note card reads as thus:

'This is my gift for the Winter Festival from me to you. I know you like flowers, so I tried to arrange something with what I had, thinking of how you told me there was a language to it. I still don't think I get it, but I tried to make something anyway.

I picked flowers I thought looked bright. You seemed ready to give up on yourself and your dreams back when you taught me this, but the future can be bright. That's what I wanted to say.'

It was no definition that could be found in any floral dictionary, but it was the one he had come up with nonetheless.

'The more of them, the brighter the future. So I picked lots. I don't understand it at all, but I mean what I say here now at least. So don't give up.

Fresh from a friendly sparring match with a student, Laslow exits the training grounds, ready for a shower and some snacks. He hums softly to himself, stretching his arms above his head.

A shadow falls across him. He pays it no mind, at first, as all kinds of animals shoot across the sky at all hours of the day. But this shadow is persistent; wheeling around until it hovers a few feet above him. Face tilting up, he finds a large, colorful bouquet hanging delicately from the claws of a messenger owl.

Laslow grabs the bouquet, pulling the attached notecard free as the owl soars away. Some bright petals flutter to the ground, likely jostled from their journey.

The future can be bright. Ah, if only Leif knew exactly what those words meant to Laslow! It's a truth he's lived, fought, and bled for. How often he repeated the phrase like a mantra during miserable marches through ash-choked land. Leif understands it completely; if a flower can find a way to bloom, there are still bright days ahead.

He tucks the notecard into his jacket and takes a deep inhale of the assembled blooms. They fill his nose with springtime and sunshine and the drone of bees floating lazily on a warm breeze. Whatever meaning this particular arrangement of flowers might have had no longer matters--it's a symbol of friendship, of encouragement when your spirit is at its lowest.

The bouquet is placed on Laslow's desk, right in the square patch of sunlight that hits it around noon.

Later that evening, a small bouquet of yellow chrysanthemums are left on Leif's doorstep. The attached note is simple.

Leif,

Thank you for your gift! I understood your meaning loud and clear, flower language accurate or not. (How did you know sunflowers are a particular favorite of mine?)

You'll be glad to know I didn't give up. Everything's sorted out now, and my future looks as bright as I've ever seen it.

No actually, you are so real for making Narinder cave into mortality. I do this too!! I always go off based on the official art I’ve seen of him even if it’s not technically canon, because even if he is really angry after being usurped, maybe he realizes he is technically free.

He really has a choice as to who he gets to be now. He COULD take the crown back, but he gets hit with the bliss of peace in the cult one day (while he’s, idk sitting under a tree, or gets wrapped up in daily life) and he goes, “Wait, this is actually kind of nice” - and BAM character development.

A lovely friend of mine got my 10th Doctor illustration signed by David Tennant yesterday and also gave him a little gift I prepared! ✨️ She managed to record what he said, and I have listened to it nonstop since she sent it to me, haha. He's been my favourite person and actor for over a decade, and the fact that he's seen my art and likes it means the world to me!

The gift included most of my good omens prints, bookmarks, stickers and a personal letter. I hope he got the chance to look through them!
