like. it ends the same way. but what if it's different this time. what if he doesn't turn around, what if he makes it out, what if hades is kinder, what if orpheus sees the storm earlier, what if eurydice didn't have to go.

idk this is a specific experience with my show but. in my school's hadestown, we installed a trapdoor into the front+center of the stage. at the end of doubt comes in, as eurydice sings 'orpheus you are not alone...' the side door of the stage opens, bathing orpheus and eurdyice is this blinding white light. they're so close!! they're there! they're walking towards the exit!!! but eurdyice stops in the center of the stage, basking in this light, this feeling, this love, and without her footsteps... orphues panics. he's so close. he turns around

its dead silent. that light is still there, bathing them. they were so close. they stare at each other, so much love and relief and fear and terror and realization and grief and love. "its you" orpheus murmurs in awe, relief, love. "its me" eurydice gasps in shock, horror, love, knowing.

"orpheus" eurydice calls out, only to clamp her hands over her mouth as she sobs. she knows. but in this final moment, all she shes is the love in his eyes and can she even blame him? she cant

"eurdyice" orpheus sings out, a delicate smile on his face, falling at her tears, he's stumbling towards her, holding out his lantern to see her through the darkness.

he's so close. he's right there. two more steps he could reach her. five more steps, he could pull her into his arms. even now you think 'he can save her. he'll pull her into his arms and they'll make it to the door and they'll go home'

but she's gone. the trap door falls beneath her feet and dark red light glow from below and she falls, back down into hadestown, and orpheus crumbles to the ground, guitar and later hitting the cold ground as he gasps, begging, cries, collapses in on himself. the cold, blinding light still bathes him. he was so close.

the light disappears as the door closes, orpheus's sobs shudder into sniffles and he lays on the ground, before the trap door, stage lights go up.

"alright," hermes says, standing far far upstage, on the stairs, watching this whole story play out again, as she's seen time and time before. and she's gonna sing it again. because maybe this time...
