Math masterpost!
So you want to learn math. Good. Math is amazing. I studied physics for two years and I miss it SO MUCH. Learning math isn't just cool, but it's a great way to improve skills such as:
Resilience: sometimes you will get stuck for a while on a problem - this is absolutely normal for college-level problems. You won't start from here though;
Self confidence: mastering a subject known to be difficult is fun;
Problem solving: you will be less likely to just sit down and do nothing if something comes up in your life, you will be able to try to find a solution.
It will change your approach to failure as you will become more flexible in your thinking.
Unfortunately most people never learn how to properly study math. We all probably know how to study a book over humanities. We start by reading the material, then we take notes of the keypoints. But this method doesn't work with math, and math teachers often don't really know either.
For the basics I've made this post here. To sum it up:
Please don't start with "but i suck at it". Because then your brain will actually prevent you from learning (self-fulfilling prophecy, anyone?);
Realise that you need to master one topic before covering the next one or you won't be able to progress;
Really, the methods you use for things like literature or psychology or whatever won't work
Now I'm not a genius, I always was and I always be a terrible student. I have adhd, depression and chronic pain, all of which add a difficulty layer with learning.
I feel like most people fail because of the first point. I've seen this with people I've tutored IRL, people I try to fix their pc... Don't be the person that gives up before trying because no one likes that. Just don't. Remember that you are learning on your own and no one is going to grade your excercises. Now take that and make a poster out of iy.
Now, resources Where To Find The Stuff.
Khan Academy. I didn't follow this courses becuase well, university, physics, but everyone references them.
Professor Leonard
The Math Sorcerer
3b1b (curiosities in math)
Vsauce2 (fun)
numberphile (this for understanding math memes)
r/learnmath resources are great!
A great study method
Proofs? Proofs.
A 3 page document on learning math (but it's cool)
Terry Tao's famous post "there is more in mathematics about rigour and proofs"
Remember that, even if you don't like a specific youtuber, source or anything it has been a while since college and high school teachers started to upload their own material. Generally, looking for like "calculus pdf" will give you a lot of resources. Youtube is full of university courses of every kind and it's so good to access all of this knowledge for free. I cannot recommend you anything regarding textbooks because I still have my high school one. Also yes, i've used the Rudin as a complementary textbook in university but that's a bit too much.
I really, really want to emphasize the mentality part. Leaning formula is useless if you feel like garbage because you weren't able to solve the first exercise you picked up after a decade not doing anything.
My personal and sparce advice:
Unless you have dyscalculia don't use the calculator. I know, I KNOW. But this "lazyness" will make everything 10 times more difficult.
Beware about overlearning. Basically, when you solve everything at the first attempt and you keep doing the same thing over and over because it feels good, but the truth is that you are wasting time. This is the time to move forward.
Try to differentiate between a knowledge error(did I actually study the subject?), a conceptual error (did I understand the material), or a mere calculation/distraction error (fo example a missing sign, writing the wrong thing etc)
Try to solve the problems in different ways if you can.
After a certain time, It will be useful to review things done in the past, (ref: spaced repetition method).
Write everything down. Reasonings, steps etc. It will be easier for you to review them.
This posts keep crashing so I have to call it quits now.
but:
have fun

Hereâs my long awaited ramble about why I love constitutional monarchism. Iâm almost entirely referring to the British monarchy here because I am British and live in Britain.
In a constitutional monarchy, your monarch is a figurehead. A unifying figure for the people of the nation. The monarch is like a living embodiment of centuries of your nationâs history. So on and so forth. King George VI stayed in London during the Blitz for example, showing solidarity with his people and acting as a symbol of Britainâs unwavering determination in WWII. The king is still in London, we are still in London. Here we are still, facing the music. Et cetera. The monarch is a non-partisan figure, acting as a unifying figurehead when partisan politics become increasingly divisive. I like constitutional monarchism in particular because I feel that the monarchy and the government have this symbiosis wherein they both ensure the other is acting constitutionally. Say some undemocratic group tried to coup the government, the king could dissolve parliament. The constitution limits the monarch so society remains democratic. Constitutional monarchy is this combination of the best parts of democracy and the best parts of monarchy in my opinion. Heads of government can come and go but a monarch remains as long as they live.
So why a constitutional monarchy rather than a republic? In a republic, the president represents their party, not the nation. Their allegiance belongs to the party. Their allegiance belongs to securing reelection, protecting their image, and so on. However, the monarch represents the nation. The monarchâs non-partisan alignment allows them to act a figurehead for the whole country, not just the Labour Party for example. Thus ensuring stability. When Britain faces its darkest hours, the people can look to the monarch as a symbol of British identity and so on (again George VI during WWII). The roles of head of state and head of government are separated under a constitutional monarchy. This removes some of the burden for holders of both of these roles. Governments can be volatile (like Liz Trussâ disastrous premiership). However, the monarchy is infallible. When the monarch rises to the throne, they swear an oath to serve their nation for life. Hardly a legitimate point but itâs more fun than a republic. The pomp of it all is fun. It looks amazing. The coronations and the crowns and the palaces and everything looks so cool.
The heir is raised to take the throne when their parent dies. Thus, they spend their life preparing to take on this role. They are raised knowing that they have a great responsibility to fulfil. They know the role that will one day fall upon them, so they are trained for this role.
Now, the cost. The Sovereign Grant funds the maintenance of royal residences and the official duties of the head of state. In exchange, the monarch sacrifices revenue from the Crown Estate. In 2022-23, the total Sovereign Grant amounted to ÂŁ86.3 million, around ÂŁ1.29 per person in the U.K. Here is the royal familyâs financial reports for 2022-23. As of 2024, the Sovereign Grant is set at 12% of the Crown Estateâs revenue. The Crown Estate amassed ÂŁ1.1 billion net profit in 2023-24. Here is parliamentâs website about the monarchyâs finances. The net recurring benefit of this is estimated to be ÂŁ197 million annually and the non-recurring benefit to be ÂŁ761 million (https://researchbriefings.files.parliament.uk/documents/CBP-9807/CBP-9807.pdf)
Furthermore, I think a constitutional monarch maintains democracy through acting as a figurehead and the power to dissolve parliament in the event of figures in parliament threatening democracy. Here is The Economistâs Democracy Index. Notice that quite a few of the highest ranking nations are constitutional monarchies (so Norway, Sweden, Denmark, and the Netherlands).
Another thing I would like to add is that generally members of the royal family engross themselves in charities and the like. HM King Charles III, for example, is a staunch environmentalist and has been for many decades. Heâs campaigned for things like the environment and sustainability and walkable cities and so on. For example, the town of Poundbury in Dorset and his founding of Duchy Originals (now partnered with Waitrose) - whose profits go The Princeâs Charities. Furthermore, Prince William also founded the Earthshot Prize in 2020 which awards ÂŁ1 million to winners that contribute towards environmentalism. The royal family also funds the arts, for example, King Charles III is a patron of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.
To conclude, I believe constitutional monarchy is the most beneficial system of government because of the continued stability it offers to a nation. The monarch is a non-partisan head of state and thus the people unite under the monarch as a symbol of the nation and its rich history and traditions. Both democracy and monarchy work together in this symbiosis to uphold each other. The constitutional monarchy is the culmination of centuries of history, it has evolved and grown from autocracy to the modern dayâs liberal democracy.
#I started waxing poetical towards the end.#I may have missed some things that I wanted to say. I evidently have a lot of thoughts on the subject#monarchism#constitutional monarchism#pro monarchy

Did you make your silly little outfit? I've been looking for patterns and tutorials and if you have some favorites would you share?
If you bought your silly little outfit, I'm in the market for finding them as well as making them
Hi! Yes I made the coat and the waistcoat of my silly little outfit myself!! I'm glad you like them!
I'm not good enough at sewing to do my own patterns or work fully off actual historical ones unfortunately, so i did them mostly off this pattern for the waistcoat + this one for the frock coat (with a couple small modifications as I went on my part). they're okay as patterns go I'd say, they have the strong benefit in that they're fairly specific in time period + historically focused, so they're not like. any old waistcoat and coat from any time (bc these things change a lot!!) -- although I def remember them being a little unclear in some parts which took a bit puzzling over (for me at least) to sort out what was going on
if you're looking for historical patterns, these guys are really good from what I can tell; although I haven't fully finished anything from them yet I'm currently in the middle of making (with some adjustments for hip/waist ratio lol) these breeches from their pattern and it has been great so far! the added benefits of this one is that they have a blog where they take you through tutorials of some of the patterns step by step with pictures (e.g. the breeches) which has been Really helpful when I've gotten stuck to see it being done. they also are based quite closely off of actual period patterns from what I can tell
If you're better with patterns than I am, there's this invaluable book called The Cut of Men's Clothes 1600-1900 (PDF here) which has actual historical tailor's patterns you can look at, as well as discussion & illustrations of the periods of clothing. This is a really cool book that I look at a lot, but to be honest the actual patterns are a little beyond me at my skill level. Hopefully I'll get there though, I'm working on it!
Not patterns strictly but this is a very cool blog (also here on tumblr with a main here) about sewing historical clothing + the process of sewing it which I have found very cool
#i hope that's helpful! I'm honestly a little new at this so most of what I've been doing is just fooling around figuring things out haha#not sure what level you're at of things so idk whether this is all stuff you know already#thoughts#ask#ajulian

DYNAMO | Steve Rogers x Reader | part 2.
HYDRA has made their share of human experiments. You're just one of them. One of the least successful ones. One of the least functional ones. At least your life in the facility gave you a few things: unwavering resilience, cool(ish) superpowers and a great sense of humor. Steve Rogers would strongly disagree with that last one. A single chance encounter with him reluctantly brings you into the Avengers Compound, and you're determined to make his life as miserable as you can. Feeling's mutual.
AO3 | Masterlist | Playlist (coming soon!)
notes: part 2 is up! I've had this written for a while and I didn't want to wait to post hehehe. Not a lot of Steve interaction this time around though, just getting the plot going </3 (warnings: mentions of human experimentation, violence, cursing) (2.5K words)
2: CONDUCTIVE ACCORDS
âSo, Iâve been thinking about what that thing you asked me,â Natasha slides on a stool next to Steve, and he raises one eyebrow at her, silently waiting for her to elaborate. He asks her lots of things, all the time. âon the girl with the electric powers. And then I remembered something.â
She opens the laptop sheâs brought with her, and Steve feels dizzy by the lack of, well, anything, in her desktop area. Heâs aware she has a meticulously crafted system, and that it never fails her, because she is Natasha Romanoff. But come on. Thereâs not even a Google Chrome on there.
After a couple of clicks a PDF is up on the screen. Medical records, and a picture attached. Yeah, thatâs her alright-- he could spot that intense gaze anywhere.
He reads her name on the top of the page and tests it on his tongue.
âOrâŠA-7463. They refer to her mostly like this, anyway. She was part of an experiment to get people into manipulating energy.â
âSeems like they were successful.â Heâd know. His body was still recovering from that.
âAlmostâŠThey wanted an army.â Natasha scrolls down, and more pictures come into view. They all have a bright red VERSAGEN stamp over the pages. Failures.
Kids.
That makes Steve grimace. âShe was the only one who survived.â
âYes. And when I came across these for the first time I thought--â
Steveâs head whips to Natashaâs face. His eyebrows meet at the center of his face.
âYou knew? You kept this from us?â
âWell, it didnât seem relevantâ"
âAn enhanced HYDRA agent walking around free isnât relevant?â
âSheâs not so much an agent â sheâs more of a victim, donât you think?â Natasha sighs, and closes the laptop. Steve perks up in his stool, staring down at her, even though he knew damn well that intimidation tactic wouldnât work. But he wants her to know that heâs angry.
A victim. She didnât seem like a victim when he was writhing on the ground like a fish out of water.
But those cries of pain he heard then werenât his. His jaw was too busy being clenched shut to utter any sound.
Steve pinches the bridge of his nose, trying not to feel sympathy for the girlâwoman, actually; from her files she is around 23 something now.
Sheâs HYDRA, still. And hasnât turned herself over to justice. There was something off about it, Steve could feel it even though he couldnât pinpoint it exactly.
âAnd I figured theyâd have eliminated her already.â That brings Steve out of his own thoughts. She had been slipping through everyoneâs fingers, then â and that was intriguing.
Maybe they could get her to collaborate. Take down HYDRA once and for all. Smash all the heads, burn all the tentacles to a crisp. From the inside, or at least with an insider on their court.
Even though their first impression was less than positive.
âWe should take this to Fury and the others.â
âAs if we needed another one of those.â
âTonyââ
âNo, no, let âim talk, Natasha. Those what?â Bucky plants both hands â one human, one a prototype â on the table in front of him.
âThoseââ
âWill this ever stopâŠâ Steve shoots a sympathetic look at Wanda, though Tonyâs remarks were never directed at her.
âThose what, Stark?â
Since Bucky Barnes had moved into the Avengers compound with the rest of them, his and Tonyâs bickering had become a constant. They revel in civility until Tony decides heâs bored and it all begins again.
âOkay, children, you can stop now.â Fury drops a manila folder on the table â theatrics, because he never opens it, and instead uses a controller to turn on a screen behind him right after. It works though, as all of them turn to look at him. Steve rests his chin in his hand.
The face of a young A-7463 is up on the screen, staring right at him once again. A mystery wrapped inside a challenging gaze. Steveâs need to figure out just what she wanted and who she was grew more every time he looked at her.
Wouldnât you like to know, Cap.
ââŠso we make her an offer she canât refuse: freedom in exchange of information. Of course, with the bonus of not letting another superhuman on the loose.â
âTemporary and conditional pardon isnât really freedom, Fury.â
âWell not everyone is as lucky as you, Barnes.â Bucky clenches his jaw at the same time Steve does his.
But itâs different. Bucky was a prisoner of war. He was forced into it. Whoâs to say which side the girl was really on.
And those powers⊠she could be dangerous. Taking her down would probably need all their forces combined. They all agreed on that, at least.
But the plan was set: find her, convince her to cooperate in exchange of a conditional. Keep the girl and her powers under their watch and their control.
Finding her would be Natashaâs job. Steve and Sam would play the diplomatic part. Or theyâd try.
He had a feeling that would be the hard part. Maybe they should cause a power outage in the vicinity just in case.
A-7463.
He thinks about your name again. Itâs fitting for a hurricane, and heâs about to walk right into it.
Thereâs something humorous about having blue hair when you have electric powers.
Your hair is dyed a deep indigo now â and it should make you easier to spot in any normal circumstances, but not in Los Angeles, it doesnât. This specific shade of blue was sold out in all of the Sallyâs you walked in. So, like the sensible person you were, you broke into an apartment and stole a jar of it. You know, as you do.
The good thing about this city is that there were plenty of empty apartments for you to stay in â granted, most of them were just arranged to look livable, but a couch is a couch and for a night, thatâs enough for you.Â
Itâs not like you can rent an AirBnb.
Your mousey life has been going okay so far â since meeting Captain America over a week ago, you managed to stay lowkey, powers included. A blackout in L.A. would be a dead giveaway.
The balmy air of the city fills your lungs and clings to your skin as you munch on the other half of the burrito you got for lunch. You havenât been able to eat much these daysâsomething about the migraines left you with barely enough energy (ha) to keep yourself alive.
Youâd never thought youâd miss the devils in lab coats and gas masks, but you almost do. Itâs hard doing it yourself, and you donât have the access to the drugs they used.
The view is pretty from the top of the building youâre sitting on, all windows and lights and cars going up and down the elevated highways. Itâs nice. You wonder what New York would look like, but you donât have the guts to go up there. Too close.
âNice view you got there.â
A womanâs voice makes you jump and drop your food on the floor. You groan in frustration, but your breath gets caught up in your throat when the red hair comes into your line of vision.
Natasha Romanoff.
Sheâs leaning casually against the door that leads to the staircase down, and you know itâs to stop you from getting to it.
âSmart move with the hair. I almost got to three other people before finding you.â
You shrug, but inside you feel a little spark of pride.
âYou made me drop my dinner.â
âSorry about that. Although half a burrito barely sounds like dinner to me. Iâll buy you a decent mealâif you agree to sit and talk to me.â
The offer was tempting, and Romanoffâs face made you want to trust her. You were starving, really, until the realization that she was going through an effort to keep that expression on made you take a step back and your appetite vanish.
âNot hungry. And Iâm not really a conversational kind of girl.â
âWe have a proposition you might be interested in.â
âAn apartment behind bars? Rogers already made that,â Casually averting your eyes back to the skyline, you begin scanning the horizon for the rest of them.
âTheyâre not here. Relax.â
âLie.â
âYes and no. They came with me, but theyâre not close enough to ambush you.â
You donât miss how she skirted around the actual reason she was here â a proposition. Bullshit.
âRight.â
âNot that I think they couldnâtâbut they wonât. Trust me.â Her voice sounds much closer than before, and you turn your head to meet her intense gaze as your hairs stand on end. Sheâs sizing you up; you know her methods.
You had classes on all of them before you got out.
A former field of study standing right in front of you, casually inviting you for dinner. You wonder if she knows you feel like youâre caught in a mousetrap.
âShould I?â
Natasha chuckles lightly. âNot if youâre smart. Now, I am dying for that Pho across the street, so Iâm heading there. Offer stands until I walk out that door, and Iâm not leaving without you. Noodles or handcuffs, take your pick.â She sighs as you square your shoulders and keep looking ahead. You can hear the creak of the door at the same time your stomach rumbles.
Oh, screw it. Might as well take your chances.
âWaitââ You catch up with her a second before the door closes. When in Rome.
Well, L.A.
Turns out the choice between food or handcuffs wasnât one. You inhaled the Pho like it was your first meal in days, because it kind of was, and then you got your wrists bound behind you on the next.
There was just a little scuffle in the middle.
Honestly, it wasnât your fault; Captain America and the Falcon descended on you just as you were leaving the restaurant, your belly still warm from the food.
All you managed was a snarl as you leaped away from the three and gathered the blockâs electricity on your body. One by one the lamps were out, and your face was illuminated by the familiar blue glow.
Captain Americaâs shield deflected your first blast before being hurled in your direction, lodging itself on the wall behind you. The next hit him right on the chest. Your lips curled into a smirk.
And then the energy vanished from your hands. As if evaporated into the air.
Groaning, you concentrated on bringing it back and directing yourself to your second target. Spots filled your vision, and your head felt like it was being split open.
It was a fraction of a second, and the Falcon took it. He knocked you over your middle and handcuffed you. And that was the end of it. You vision was too blurry to react and you had to make an effort to keep yourself conscious. The lights returned to the street. Shit.
Your powers are unreliable, you know as much. And now here you are, being strapped into a high-tech aircraft by none other than Mr. America himself.
âAbsolutely fucking not.â
They had finally shared what the proposition was.
You could be arrested. Or you could be arrested, but with a pretty bow on top.
âYou donât have a third choice here. This the most generous weâve been to anyone ex-hydra.â
âExcept for Barnes.â Rogers clenches his jaw, now even more pissed than he was by your swearing. âPity you and I are not besties then.â
His hairs are still unruly from your energy blast, and it makes you smirk. No hair gel is invincible.
Natasha must have caught a wave of it too, because you notice her usually impeccable hair a little bit frizzy. You almost feel bad â she did buy you dinner, after all.
Thereâs something almost empathetic to her demeanor, but it must be to break your resistance. Good cop, bad cop, as they say. Youâre honestly surprised Rogers is the bad one this time.
He must really hate HYDRA. And so do you.
Thing was, you were kept in the dark on most of their operations. You didnât even know where your base was until you escaped from it: two days away from civilization across the frozen tundra.
And this felt like walking back to it, except with a government issued name.
âI donât know all these things about them like you think I do,â You start, and you meet eyes with Sam Wilson.
âWeâll take whatever you got.â Heâs frowning, as if heâs undecided about you.
âAnd then let me go.â
âYou will be pardoned. But youâll stay at the compound for the time being.â
Thatâs that pretty bow on top.
However long or what would be done with you after said pardon, no one was willing to make that clear.
âThatâs a shit deal. Prison or prison! Who did you guys learn to negotiate with, the Russian mob?â You squirm on your seat, but the cuffs on your wrists and ankles are tight. Your powers nowhere to be found. All that lab fuckery for nothing.
âYouâll see the living conditions are pretty good there.â Natasha arguments. âAnd we have a pretty damn good doctor that can figure out whateverâs going on with you.â
You look at her like a deer caught in the headlights. Youâve always thought she had no special powers, but now youâre wondering if she can read minds.
All three of them are staring at you now.
âYour nose is bleeding.â She explains it, and you hastily wipe it on your shoulder. There goes your last good hoodie. âAnd I read your file. We did.â
Your file. She has your file, the thing youâve been looking for, the answers you need.
As if on cue, the pounding on your head returns. You close your eyes, letting your head fall back and knock softly against the wall. All you wanted was to just live. No stupid powers. No running. No Avengers, no HYDRA, no migraines and nosebleeds. The boring life everyone complains about.
You didnât want to waste away while your own body turned against you, mad someone tampered with it until things went haywire.
The promise of a solution at last makes you go quiet.Â
âFine. The Avenger Disneyland it is.â

OKAY SO. First question: Are there other diseases that can spread despite being cooked?
The answer is no, not really. Prions are just really fucked up. But! If meat isn't cooked to the proper temperature and held there for a while, you can end up with meat that looks cooked, but still is dangerous. This is especially true with ground meats, which is why you should never order a rare ground meat burger.
The reason ground meat is a problem and not steak is because the bacteria and viruses that cause illness tend to vibe on the outside of the meat, so with steak, as long as the outside is properly cooked, you're pretty safe. With ground meats, every surface is mashed together and thus the whole product has the potential for bacteria and viruses.
As for being a carrier of disease- generally, in a slaughterhouse setting, the animal is examined before slaughter, and then after slaughter, indivual spots are examined for signs of disease to ensure bad product doesn't make it to the market. I know that at least the esophagus and the lymph nodes are checked off the top of my head (my dad has been involved in the opening of the second ever ostrich slaughterhouse and had a GREAT time trying to figure out the esophagus stuff).
Thankfully, I found these fun and cool PDFs about the pre and post mortem inspection processes! So here those are if you wanna take a peek- https://www.fsis.usda.gov/sites/default/files/media_file/2021-11/17a_HQ_LSIT_Antemortem_07-02-2019.pdf https://www.fsis.usda.gov/sites/default/files/media_file/2020-08/PHVt-Post_Mortem_Inspection.pdf
Doing these inspections on a Human Person would likely be sufficient for determining if they were a carrier for a disease or not. But we also have the added bonus of humans being a lot easier to tell if they're sick by virtue of. We know what sick humans look like because we are also human/human adjacent in this setting. Also because you can just ask.
Now- here's the fun part!! In a kitchen setting, meat is not your only concern! Veggies used in salads and for garnish are also a hot bed for food borne illness, since they aren't cooked and washing often isn't enough to get E. Coli off your lettuce. That's why it's important yo be aware of food recalls and ALSO have separation of raw meat, cooked meat, and veggies. You GOTTA have separate areas for preparation of each (I've heard that a lot of kitchens use color coordinated cutting boards!).
I....don't know how to apply food safety to fucking someone in a kitchen where you then do slaughter and cooking. Or actively having sex with someone during the slaughter process. Uh. I think it would break the rules. But I....don't know. Which rules. This is not something that comes up in normal food safety, I'm sure you understand. I think as long as Morell washes his hands afterwards it's- it's kinda okay?? ITS HARD TO APPLY REAL WORLD LOGIC TO THIS.
In conclusion: it would probably be fine for kiddo to eat human as long as Morell follows USDA guidelines at least a little.
As thanks for reading this ramble, please take this baby ostrich photo!
You have a lot of info, and it's nice to have someone with a clear idea about this stuff...as much as it can be applied to fucked up porn scenarios.
I'm glad that the kiddo and Piglet will probably be fine if they eat some, at least physically. I had told pin about Prion disease in an RP we did a long while back, as that was how my troll, Liva, was convincing Morell to stop feeding Piglet other humans. This updated information is nice to know so I don't further spread misinformation, even if in reality it's probably fine to use whatever to spook people off actually eating each other.
As for Morells cleanliness, uh, he is not at least in regards to butchering and sex, he's a gross man and doesn't wash his hands for cooking after I'm pretty certain. Piglet will have to hose him for her safety, hands, mouth, dick, everything if she can manage to get him to listen to her. The good news is I think he stops fucking people after meeting her so there's at least one less thing to worry about carrying disease.
In a world with magic and Krulu hovering around making sure his employees play things don't die so they don't have man baby tantrums none of this really matters though. Even without Krulu directly getting involved though, there's Patches and or Liva's magic, which probably can't fix everything ever but can probably fix enough. Patches probably won't help out of the goodness of his heart, he'll need to be nagged by Morell but Liva will, and verbally rip into the chef the whole time for being so bad at taking care of his "wife".
Aahh hello little babies! I would give them little head kisses if they weren't still in the inside phase, they're still vulnerable when they're that little I believe. Thank you for the picture and the interaction, I find it very sweet that you wanted to info dump for me, I'm around if you'd like to again.

A Comprehensive List of Essential Comic Making Resources
It's very easy to get surface-level information about the art of making comics. But if you want the real shit, some curation will help. Some of these are neat informative images. Others are books that you'll have to find yourself. There will be some links to videos. Let's get into it.
[Link to a WordPress version of this post so you can share with your friends who don't use Tumblr]
ESSENTIAL BOOKS
There are enough books by professional, highly regarded comic artists and writers out there that you never need to buy a "How To" book by someone without industry experience; something to keep in mind.
Making Comics by Scott McCloud Scott McCloud is maybe a little too afraid of making definitive statements, but otherwise this is an incredible macro-level overview on the subject of making comics. Understanding Comics is also essential; Reinventing Comics is more of a time capsule. Perspective for Comic Book Artists by David Chelsea A comic artist who doesn't know perspective is like a guitarist who can't do alternate picking. This book, which is itself a comic, is a very effective resource on the subject of perspective. I made a short video about a cool trick from this book that they don't teach in art class:
youtube
This book has a sequel, Extreme Perspective for Artists, which is good at being what it is, but the advice is a lot less widely applicable. Framed Perspective Vol. 1 and 2 by Marcos Mateu-Mestre Going to be honest, these books are mostly redundant if you've already read the [imo] superior David Chelsea book, but they aren't bad books in isolation and if you get the perspective sickness like I did you'll probably want to read them anyways.
Figure Drawing for All It's Worth by Andrew Loomis Andrew Loomis wrote a bunch of highly regarded illustration books, but this one is my favorite. It has a lot of great practical advice related to drawing figures in perspective together, which begin with the iconic "John and Mary Problems". Here's another essential Loomis diagram:
Drawing Scenery: Landscapes and Seascapes by Jack Hamm I really need to re-read this one, and take it seriously this time, because my rocks look like shit. The other Jack Hamm books [Cartooning the Head & Figure, Drawing the Head & Figure] are also good. Writing for Comics by Alan Moore This is a very brief book, and it's maybe not super revelatory, but none of the advice within is bad. Writing for Comics & Graphic Novels by Peter David Nothing groundbreaking here either, but also not a book that will teach you wrong lessons. PROTIP Remember that any books about writing craft will be applicable to writing comics in many ways; books about writing comics specifically might have a few specialized tidbits, but 90% of writing advice transfers across mediums. Chuck Palahniuk wrote a series of essays on writing that I really enjoy that are floating around in a PDF somewhere; I'm not sure if that PDF turned into Consider This. Eclipse Tips from Top Cartoonists by Various This book is long out-of-print and rare, but you can see a flip-through of the book here. There's a lot of great stuff in it, but the most essential part is probably Scott McCloud's bit. [PROTIP: Using an upscaler on a screenshot of a book can make small text a lot more legible; the image below was upscaled.]
Will Eisner Books by Will Eisner I'm going to be honest, I once read Comics and Sequential Art and found a lot of the information within to be very pointless musings about things [e.g. "What if I drew some panels over a skeuomorphic drawing of a comicbook?"]. But Eisner's books are held in high regard by a lot of people, and obviously he was a talented cartoonist. Maybe I read his worst book on the subject. How to Draw Comics the Marvel Way by John Buscema Read this historically significant book, absorb the four or five nuggets contained within, and take everything else with a grain of salt.
Morpho Art Books by Michel Lauricella I find these art reference books a lot more useful than equivalent resources. A lot of comic artists could definitely benefit from reading Fat and Skin Folds; it's not always about muscles! How to Draw: The Best of Basic Training by Various Wizard Magazine used to have a feature called Basic Training where various comic artists would give tips on how to draw. A lot of these tutorials were perhaps too short to be good, and some of the gross ones reek of an assumption that women won't be reading them [see: Sultry Women by Adam Hughes], but there were some real gems in there. Artists such as Joe Kubert, George Perez, Kevin Maguire, Scott McCloud, Steve Lieber, Mike Mignola, and Brian Bolland contributed. The image below is from a piece on drawing realistic women by Terry Moore.
The Complete Idiot's Guide to Creating a Graphic Novel by Nat Gertlet and Steve Lieber I've never personally read this book, but Eisner-winning Steve Lieber is a highly respected cartoonist and Gertler had been Eisner-nominated before writing this book. I imagine it's a solid resource. How Comics Work by Dave Gibbons and Tim Pilcher Another book I haven't personally read, but obviously Dave Gibbons is a master of the medium. Frank Santoro wrote a mixed review about this book for The Comics Journal. Words for Pictures by Brian Michael Bendis I remember flipping through this for a while in a Barnes & Noble and thinking it was entertaining. The Art of Comic Book Writing by Mark Kneece Kneece doesn't have a very substantial bibliography as a comics writer, but this book is highly regarded by many people. The DC Comics Guide to . . . by Various DC made a whole series of books related to various facets of comics craft. I haven't read most of these myself, but they're all well-regarded and were written by top talents such as Dennis O'Neil and Klaus Janson. The only one I have read is The DC Comics Guide to Digitally Drawing Comics; solid book, implies good things about the other books in the series, but this specific volume is only really worthwhile if you use Photoshop. The Art of Comic Book Inking Third Edition by Gary Martin et al I've never read the third edition, but I have seen the first edition and that was a good book in itself, with the subsequent editions being more highly regarded. The third edition features contributions from a murderers' row of comics professionals: Terry Dodson, Adam Warren, Brian Bolland, Kevin Nowlan, Mike Royer, and many others.
ESSENTIAL BLOG POSTS AND SUCH
Jesse Hamm's Writings on Alex Toth I can't tell you how many times I read Jesse Hamm's LiveJournal posts about Alex Toth [and a handful of other artists] during class in highschool. Unfortunately a lot of the images are now broken, and so you'll need to pull out the Wayback Machine to make sense of some of these. Don Simpson on King Kong Don Simpson, across his various blogs, has made a lot of neat process posts, but these two posts about his King Kong comic are probably his most essential. Rough Riders: Kong Art from Concept to Finish First Kingdom: Kong Thumbnails from 1990 Shit I Wish Scott McCloud Told Me This old Tumblr has been ravaged by time; the formatting has been ruined after years without updates and inactivity, and much of the advice was written by people without credibility [cough]. But there were some real nuggets here. Jim Shooter on Comics Craft There's a website that compiles Jim Shooter's opinions on various facets of comic craft. Shooter was mostly known for being an editor, but he did write and layout some highly regarded comics in his time. Probably worth watching these videos as a companion piece of sorts, especially if you're not familiar with Shooter's ethos. Kelly Turnbull Tutorials The most useful tutorial is Let's Draw Abs, but you might find some use in the other ones. Matt Fraction on Daredevil: Born Again The triangle stuff here sounds made up, but apparently it was intentional. The Schweizer Guide to Spotting Tangents You're going to want to avoid tangents, which can make pictures look visually confusing. Jim Rugg's Octobriana 1976 Process Zine This PDF costs $5, but it's worth it to see over 300 pages of sketches, breakdowns, insights, etc.
THE BEST CARTOONIST KAYFABE EPISODES
I do realize that Cartoonist Kayfabe was a divisive Youtube channel; if you'd like to hear more of my thoughts you can read an article I wrote about the channel on my blog here. In short, I think Cartoonist Kayfabe was one of the greatest educational resources on comics craft. Here are the videos from the channel I found the most educational:
youtube
Thumbnails, Layouts, and Roughs Dark Knight Returns Original Artwork Watching the Watchmen The Charlton Comicbook Guide for the Artist / Writer / Letterer Frank Miller's Conversation With Will Eisner Templates for Faster Comic Making The Killing Joke Brian Bolland Layouts How to Draw Comics the Bill Griffith Way How to Ink Comic Books Absolute Batman: Year One Famous Artists Course: Composition Full Make More Comics Playlist
OTHER NEAT YOUTUBE THINGS
Helioscope PDX Helioscope PDX is a large studio in Portland shared by many cartoonists, and they have some neat videos. Terry Moore's Youtube Channel The guy who wrote and illustrated Strangers in Paradise has a Youtube channel where he posts neat, often wholesome videos. Strange Brain Parts Not actually a channel about making comics, but as far as analysis goes Strange Brain Parts is the best comics channel on Youtube. Neat!

COMICS WITH PEAK CRAFT
This list is obviously far from being exhaustive, but I think all of these comics are at least a 9/10 on a craft level, if not also a dramatic level.
OMAC by Jack Kirby A lot of Jack Kirby's 70s books with Mike Royer and D. Bruce Berry on inks are really impressive visually, but what makes me recommend OMAC so often is that it's only eight issues long. There's an incredible panel in issue 2 where OMAC is standing outside of a door and listening to a conversation, and it has an amazing foreground-background element. One of my all-time favorite panels.
By the 70s, almost every panel Kirby illustrated was a masterpiece. So many incredible compositions designed to guide the eye in a circular motion; check out this late-period composition from Captain Victory, which not only guides the eye in a circle but also has a lot of depth.
The Dark Knight Returns by Frank Miller The 16-panel grid this book uses is masterful; really absorbs the reader into the world and creates a special, often intimate atmosphere. Weapon X by Barry Windsor Smith The compositions, atmosphere, pacing, etc in Weapon X are perfect.
Born Again by Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli At least as good as Batman: Year One on a craft level, but also a more entertaining story.
Sim Hell and Fatal but Not Serious by Adam Warren These comics are very effective at creating a sense of space, and also the lettering in these books is incredible. I wrote an entire article extolling the formalism of these books.
Wonder Woman: Earth One by Grant Morrison and Yanick Paquette If you want to see what modern 3D-model assisted fastidious comics craft looks like, check out this book!
Watchmen by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons Do I need to say anything?
ODDS AND ENDS
Wally Wood's 22 Panels That Always Work Wally Wood made a reference sheet detailing 22 visually interesting panels to help him work through dialogue scenes and meet deadlines, and it wasn't long before every working comic artist had a copy of it taped to a corner of their drafting table. Here's the original, as well as a visually cleaner remake by Michael Avon Oeming.
Jim Steranko's The Laws of Action Solid advice on how to liven up figure drawings.
Alan Moore on Word Counts Moore recounting a guideline from editor Mort Weisinger: What he said was: if youâve got six panels on a page, then the maximum number of words you should have in each panel is 35. No more. Thatâs the maximum. 35 words per panel. Also, if a balloon has more than 20 or 25 words in it, itâs going to look too big. 25 words is the absolute maximum for ballon size. Right, once youâve taken on those two simple rules, laying out comics pages â it gives you somewhere to start â you sort of know âOK, so six panels, 35 words to a panel, that means about 210 words per page maximum⊠[so] if youâve got two panels youâd have 105 each. If youâve got nine panels, itâs about 23 â 24 words â thatâll be about the right balance of words and pictures. On the subject of drawing stuff digitally; -Krita is a highly regarded piece of open source software. I personally use Medibang Paint Pro, but I wish I didn't, because Krita has a lot of useful features. I'm unfortunately too used to the way Medibang feels. Clip Studio Paint is a popular paid piece of software that's still quite affordable. -I own a Cintiq and Intuos [drawing tablet with screen, drawing tablet without screen]. Granted I've only used my Cintiq a handful of times because my computer doesn't have enough video outputs, but I actually find that I enjoy the Intuos a lot more; a computer monitor is generally going to be a more pleasurable screen to look at than a Cintiq screen, you don't need to worry about your hand covering or touching things accidentally, and for most people it will be more ergonomic. It also doesn't take up as much space and it's a lot more portable with a laptop. Oh, and it's way cheaper. Remember that art tablets use drivers; it's my understanding that a computer can't have, say, Huion and Wacom drivers installed at the same time. So, if you're planning on getting a screenless drawing tablet and upgrading to one with a built-in screen [not something I recommend for the reasons I've established], consider the driver situation, because you'll probably want to be able to use both at different times, and also probably won't want to regularly uninstall and reinstall drivers. Carapace There's a free piece of software called Carapace that can be used to create perspective grids from photographs. A download link can be found in the description of this video.
Using Blender A lot of modern comic artists use 3D software to position complex items for tracing purposes [e.g. spaceships, cars, etc]. Blender can also be used to build locations you'll revisit a lot , and the grease pencil tool can be used to place skeletons within a space to stage complicated scenes while maintaining perspective. As you can see below, checkerboard textures can be applied to objects to try and make it easier to make sense of perspective
A thing I was working on for a one-page dungeon Blue-Line Pencils You should buy some non-photo blue pencils if you don't already have them. They're designed to be visually unobtrusive, which makes them great for drawing perspective grids and skeletons, and the color is designed to be easily filtered out of scans. They can also be erased.
EPILOGUE
I've been reading about making comics for over a decade, and I think this post more-or-less contains everything worthwhile I've seen on the subject. Remember that the most important thing is actually sitting down and practicing your craft. I do have one big thought relating to comic craft philosophy; a lot of people really love heavily premeditated comics by guys like Dave Gibbons, Frank Miller, David Mazzucchelli, etc, but they also want to make as few iterations as possible and / or draw directly onto the board. I'm a firm believer that the only way someone can really create a book like The Dark Knight Returns or Watchmen is by creating a lot of concept art, illustrating detailed layouts, making a lot of notes, etc. You have to adopt the same seemingly impossible working methods that these artists used in order to get a similar end result, or at least I think so. If you can't get anything finished while using such working methods, that's a workflow issue, and there's nothing wrong with that. Jack Kirby did everything improv and he was one of the greatest comic artists ever. But I do think studying and emulating the ways people made great comics, while taking into account advancements in tech, is very important.

Blog Post: 4/13/23
This week we finished our last project. YAY! I had said in a previous blog that I had hoped we would do the Nature poster next. I was lying. Now that our process books are finished, I don't have any more energy left to do another project. The process book drained all the energy I had left. I am delighted with my book and how it turned out. It was cool to see how my book started out a couple of weeks ago and how it looks now. Creating the book was a lot of work, but that work paid off in the end. The past couple of days were mainly spent making finishing touches. I added my letter of intent as well. The last thing I worked on was the cover. The cover, along with my bunny illustration, is one of my favorite parts of my book. The only other struggle I had with the book was uploading it. Blurb was not being nice to my other peers or me, so I spent today's class trying to figure out how to upload my book. I ended up going with uploading a pdf versus going through InDesign. The amount of copies of files I have for this book on my computer right now is ridiculous, but I'm glad I have the copies in case something goes wrong. Luckily nothing went wrong.
This week's reading is on Typographic Design Process. In the Art and Design world, it is essential to have a process before you start creating. However, starting the process is an uncharted land with no specific way to go about it. Most designers start somewhere between the realms of logic and intuition. However, each designer is different regarding how deep they dive into these realms. Some rely solely on intuition, while others rely entirely on logic. Some have an even balance of reliance on both. As a designer, figuring out what works for you is essential. Not everyone approaches an idea or task the same way, which is completely fine. That one thing is what makes the process stage great. You get to see how everyone approaches their task in different manners. Also, a designer must have patience when going through a process. Like anything else, the design world sometimes throws unexpected curveballs that alter the process. As a designer, it is your job to adapt to these curveballs and press forward. At the end of the day, the goal is to reach the final destination or the product. The path to this destination has infinite pathways. However, you never know which paths work or not if you don't take a chance on them.

15 Things You Must Know About Logo File Types
If one is making a logo for the very first time then the chances are that you do not know about the various kinds of logo files. But it is a good idea to have knowledge of the files that are a part of the process of designing a logo. It is the job a designer to have an insight on all aspects of files. However, it is true that there are a huge number of options when choosing the right file format, and they are not all equally good. In fact, if you choose the wrong type of file your image quality might take a hit.Â
Here Are a few Basic But Critical Things You Should Keep In Mind About Different Logo File Types
01. Vector And Raster Are Two Main File Types
There are several different types of logo designs files. Broadly they can be categorized as either raster files or vector files. The most precise mathematical points are used in vector files These files can be shrunk or grown to any size one wants. Even if the size is increased and the images is made huge it still looks good and it does not lose its quality.Â
On the other hand raster files are made using pixels. These images if they are grown or shrunk then their quality suffers. Thus it is for this reason that vector files are preferred.Â
02. JPG Is The Most Used Format for logo design files in 2023 and beyondÂ
The use of Joint Portable Graphic Design or JPEG files is used for printing on a small scale in homes and at the workplace. When one is trying to use this kind of file it is best to have Microsoft office, Powerpoint, and Word are a must.Â
Due to the fact the the size of the file can be reduced and these files can be compressed that is why they are most commonly used for sharing of images and archiving them.Â
The downside is that the quality suffers.Â
Logo Design?
03. PNG Has Many Advantages for aspiring graphic designers
Portable Network Graphic file which is also known as a PNG files uses pixels. It is most commonly used for websites on the internet and for digital stationary. There are a ton of benefits for users. You can shrink it or make it big and the quality remains the same.Â
This is mostly preferred by designers due to the accuracy of the colors. It is mostly used for newsletters, presentations and the like. However, the drawback is that it uses a lot of space and takes forever to download.Â
04. PDF Is A Good Choice For An Ongoing Design Process to choose among a logo file types
A logo is never made in an instant it will made and remade many tmes over. It is during this process that the best way to save it is the Portable Document File or PDF. When you start to make a logo you can look at your progress.Â
This can be used on just about any browser and just about any type of device including but not limited to smartphones and tablets. You can keep various versions to mark progress.
It also lets you stay in touch with your client and you can keep sending them project updates until they find the one they love and want.Â
05. AI Files Work Only On Illustrator is something you need to keep in mind when making a graphic designÂ
AI files are a great way to store things and in fact maybe even better than PDF. However, it cannot work if you do not have illustrator.Â
06. EPS Files Are Best For Flexible Resolution which is an important consideration in the logo design process
EPS [Encapsulated PostScript ] these files are great if you want to work with different resolutions. You can change the size and the resolution as much as you want and get great results without any loss.
This is the reason that people prefer this over the alternatives if you want to hire someone or do it yourself.Â
07. SVG Files Are Text-Based Files and a new way to save graphic designsÂ
SVG [Scalable Vector Graphics] this is one of the most recent tuples of log files. These files are normally not very large. They are vectors so they can be made of any scale you like.Â
Another special thing about these SVG files is that they are coded in a language called XML. This is a super cool language that uses text. It is widely readable.Â
08. Vector Files Are Ideal For Unlimited Resolution which is becoming more important in graphic designÂ
Vector files rely a lot on lines, points, curves and the use of many other kinds of shapes. These files can be made of any scale and have great quality.Â
These vector files can also be edited. You can get the best kind of quality for any image or design that you like. These can be updated as often as you want.Â
This is the reason that a lot of people prefer vector files as their preferred format. It is highly recommended that whenever you are going to hire a company or a freelance professional that you ask them to give you updates in vectors.Â
These vectors will make sure that the logo looks great no matter it is being shown or one what size.Â
09. Raster Files Are Pixel Based And Lose Resolution and are not favored for this reason while coming up with graphic designÂ
These raster files use pixel dots. Every square uses just one kind of color; these tiny pixels are closely bonded. This bond is what gives in qualityÂ
However, there is a down side to this as well. When you make them big or small then pixels will be distubed and the quality will suffer. These should only be for printed and not digital material.Â
10. GIF Files Are Good For Web Projects and of growing importance in graphic designÂ
We all send a ton of them every day. This kind of logo file is one of the most common ones out there. These show things in animated form.Â
These files have so many different colors in fact there are 256 kinds of colors in the RGB color space. The files are always small. These images are loved as they don't long to load.Â
11. TIF File Retains Original Image Data and are loved for making graphic designÂ
The Tagged Image file is also known as the TIF. This is much loved and it does not lose anything when it is compressed. This means that the file does not suffer no matter how much they are shrunk, grown and saved and resaved all the time. They are used to print pictures.Â
12. INDD Files Are Good For Layout-Related Options much loved in making graphic designÂ
These Indesign documents are also called INDO.These are used to make newspapers, magazines, eBooks among other things. You can make them by using Adobe. It is a great way to make designs that everyone will love. It is the new in thing for designers in 2023 and beyond.Â
13. Color Matters When Using The Files in the graphic design process
One thing we see when several file types are used is that colors are very important. Most computers rely on about 7 kinds of colors.Â
14. Use Files That Create Other Formats when making graphic designsÂ
It is true that there are many different types of source files. They need to be used with a degree of flexibility. You do not need to keep every kind of file saved. Most people work using PNG and JPG formats. Other formats used are SVG, EPS and PDF.
15. Consider Different Logo Files For Print And Web when making cutting edge graphic designs in both 2023 and beyondÂ
One size does not fit all and this is also true for making and saving logos for both the internet and on print. The reason being is that the colors used on both the internet and print. If the same file is used then the quality takes a hit.Â
Thus it is for this reason that when you make and save logo designs for different places including both print and digital you need to use various different kinds of files. Thus if the file is just for print use CMYK. If you want it for both print and digital then RGB files.Â
These are just a few things that we need to keep in mind when making and saving logos to send to our customers. The are a ton of companies that one can rely on in order to get these things right.

once again i am answering asks in a big compilation post. included is... gotham, patrick stump, tips about drawing backgrounds, tips about drawing in general, links to my faq, and infinity train
like.... the tv series? No... Iâve drawn dc comics fanart before, though. But itâs been years since Iâve been really into it. I like jumped ship like 10 years ago when the New 52 happened LOL.
AFJHDSLKGH Iâm sorry I (probably) wonât do it again??
Actually full disclosure I have a truly cringe amount of p stump drawings/photo studies in my sketchbook right now LOL. Heâs just fun to draw... hats, glasses, guitar, a good shape... but I donât think Iâll rly post those until I can hide them in another big sketchbook pdf.. probably Jan 2022. Stay tuned........ (ominous)Â
(ominous preview)
These are all sort of related to backgrounds/painting so I grouped them together even though theyâre pretty much entirely separate questions.... ANYWAYS
a) How is it working as a BG artist? Is it hard? What show are you drawing for?
I think youâre the first person to ever ask me about my job! Being a background artist is great. Itâs definitely labor intensive but I think that could describe pretty much any art job (If something were rote or easy to automate, you wouldnât hire an artist to do it) and I hesitate to say whether its harder or easier than any other role in the animation pipeline. Plus, so much of what truly makes a job difficult varies from one production to the next, schedule, working environment, co-workers etc. But I will say that I think while BGs are generally a lot of work on the upfront, I think theyâre subject to less scrutiny/revisions than something like character/props/effects design and you donât have to pitch them to a room like boards. So I guess itâs good if you donât like to talk to people? LOL
A lot of my previous projects + the show Iâve worked on the longest arenât public yet so I canât talk about em (but I assure you if/when the news does break I wonât shut up about it). But Iâm currently working on Archer Season 12 LOL. Iâm like 90% sure Iâm allowed to say that.
b) ~~~THANK YOU!! ~~~
c) What exactly do you like to draw most [in a background]?
@kaitomiuryâ Lots of stuff! I really like to draw clutter! Because itâs a great opportunity for environmental storytelling and also you can be kind of messy with it because the sheer mass will supersede any details LOL.Â
I like to draw clouds... I like to draw grass but not trees lol,,, I like to draw anything that sells perspective really easily like tiled floors and ceilings, shelves, lamp posts on a street etc.
d) Do you have any tips on how to paint (observational)?
god thereâs so much to say. painting is really a whole ass discipline like someone can paint their whole life and still discover new things about it. I guess if youâre really just starting out my best advice is that habit is more important than product. especially with traditional plein air painting, I find that the procedure of going outside and setting up your paints is almost harder than the actual painting. Thereâs a lot of artists who say âI want to do plein air sometime!!â and then never actually get around to doing it. A lot of people just end up working from google streetview or photos on their computer.
But going outside to paint is a really good challenge because it forces you to make and commit to lighting and composition decisions really quickly. And to work through your mistakes instead of against them via undo button.
My last tip is to check out James Gurneyâs youtube channel because hes probably the best and most consistent resource on observational painting out there rn. Thereâs lots other artists doing the same thing (off the top of my head I know a lot of the Warrior Painters group has people regularly posting plein air stuff and lightbox expo had a Jesse Schmidt lecture abt it last year) but Gurneyâs probably the most prolific poster and one of the best at explaining the more technical stuff - his books are great too.
e) Do you have tips for drawing cleanly on heavypaint?
@marigoldfoolâ UMM LOL I LIKE ONLY USE THE FILL TOOL so maybe use the fill tool? Fill and rectangle are good for edge control as opposed to the rest of the heavy paint tools which can get sort of muddles. And also I use a stylus so maybe if youâre using your finger, find a stylus that works with your device instead. Thatâs all Iâve got, frankly I donât think my drawings are particularly clean lol.
f) Tips on improving backgrounds/scenes making them more dynamic practicing etc?
Ive given some tips about backgrounds/scenes before so Iâm not gonna re-tread those but hereâs another thing that might be helpful...
I think a good way to approach backgrounds is to think of the specific story or even mood you want to convey with the background first. Thinking âI just need to put something behind this characterâ is going to lead you to drawing like... a green screen tourist photo backdrop. But if you think âI need this bg to make the characters feel smallâ or âI need this bg to make the world feel colorfulâ then it gives you requirements and cues to work off of.
If I know a character needs to feel overwhelmed and small, then I know I need to create environment elements that will cage them in and corner them. If a character needs to feel triumphant/on top of the world then I know I need to let the environment open up around them. etc. If I know my focal point/ where I want to draw attention, I can build the background around that.
Also, backgrounds like figure compositions will have focal points of their own and you can draw attention to it/ the relationship the characters have with the bg element via scale or directionality or color, any number of cues. I think of it almost as a second/third character in a scene.
Not every composition is gonna have something so obvious like this but it helps me to think about these because then the characters feel connected and integrated with the environment.
Some more general art questions
a) Do you have any process/tips to start drawing character/bodies/heads?
I tried to kind of draw something to answer this but honestly this is difficult for me to answer because I donât think Iâm that great at drawing characters LOL. Ok, I think I have two tips.
1) flip your canvas often. A lot about what makes human bodies look correct and believable is symmetry and balance. Even if someone has asymmetrical features, the body will often pull and push in a way to counterbalance it. we often have inherent biases to one side or another like dominant hands dominant eyes etc. you know how right-handed artists will often favor drawing characters facing 45 degrees facing (the artistâs) left? thatâs part of it. so viewing your drawing flipped even just to evaluate it helps compensate for that bias and makes you more aware of balance.
2) draw the whole figure often. I feel like a lot of beginner artists (myself included for a long time) defer to just drawing headshots or busts because itâs easier, you dont have to think about posing limbs etc. But drawing a full body allows you to better gauge proportion, perspective, body language, everything that makes a character look believable and grounded.
Like if you (me) have that issue where you draw the head too big and then have to resize it to fit the proportions of the rest of the body, itâs probably because you (I) drew the head first and are treating the body as an afterthought/attachment. Sketching out the whole figure first or even just quick drawing guides for it will help you think of it more holistically. I learned this figure drawing in charcoal at art school LOL.
oh. third mini tip - try to draw people from life often! its the best study. if you can get into a figure drawing/nude drawing class EVEN BETTER and if you have a local college/art space/museum that hosts those for free TREASURE IT AND TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT, thatâs a huge boon that a lot of artists (me again) wish they had. though if youre not so lucky and youre sitting in a park trying to creeper draw people and they keep moving.. donât let that stop you! thatâs good practice because itâs forcing you to work fast to get the important stuff down LOL. its a challenge!
b) Iâve been pretty out of energy and have had no inspiration to draw but I have the desire to. Any advice?
Dude, take a walk or something.... Or a nap? Low energy is going to effect everything else so you gotta hit that problem at its source.
If youâre looking for inspiration though, Iâd recommend stuff like watching a movie, reading a book, playing video games etc. Fill up your idea bank with content and then give yourself time/space to gestate it into new concepts. Sometimes looking at other art works but sometimes it can work against you because itâs too close.Â
Also something that helps me is remembering that art doesnât always have to be groundbreaking... like itâs okay to make something shitty and stupid that you donât post online and only show to your friend. Thatâs all part of the process imo. If you want to hit a home run you gotta warm up first, right? Sports.
I should probably compile everytime i give tips on stuff like this but thatâs getting dangerously close to being a social media artist who makes stupid boiled down art tutorials for clout which is the last thing i want to be... the thing I want to stress is that art is a whole visual language and there are widely agreed upon rules and customs but they exist in large part to be broken. Like there's an infinite number of ways to reach an infinite number of solutions and thatâs actually what makes it really cool and personal for both the artist and the viewer. So when you make work you like or you find someone elseâs work you like, take a step back and ask yourself what about it speaks for you, what about it works for you, what makes it effective, how to recreate that effect and how to break that effect completely, etc. And have a good time with it or else whatâs the point.
for the first 2, I direct you to my FAQ
For the last one, I donât actually believe Iâve ever addressed artwork as insp for stories/rp but Iâll say here and now yeah go ahead! As long as youâre not making profit or taking credit for my work then Iâm normally ok with it. Especially anything thats private and purely recreational, thatâs generally 100% green light go. I only ask that if you post it anywhere public that you please credit me.
(and I reserve the right to ask you to take it down if I see it and donât approve of itâs use but I think that case is pretty rare.)
a) @lemuelzero101 Thank you!!! I havenât played Life is Strange but actually that seriesâ vis dev artist Edouard Caplain is one of my bigger art inspirations lately so thatâs a really high compliment lol. And yeah I hope we get 5-8 too...!
b) Thank you for sticking around! Iâve been thinking about Digimon and Infinity Train in tandem lately, actually. Theyâre a little similar? Enter a dangerous alternate world and have wacky adventures with monsters/inanimate objects that have weird powers... thereâs like weird engineers and mechanisms behind the scenes... also frontier literally starts with them getting on a train. Anyways if anyone else followed me for digimon... maybe youâd like Infinity Train? LOL
c) @king-wens-king IâM GLAD MY ART JUST HAS PINOY VIBES LOL I hope you are having a good day too :^)
a, b, c, d) yessss my Watch Infinity Train agenda is working....
e) aw thank you!! i think you should watch infinity train :)

Just Ask
Prompts: Hey⊠So, I was wondering if you could write a fic where one of the sides are dyslexic? Since that usually just ends as "Oh, I can't read, oh no!" and not like the actual neurodiversity it is. Yes, I admit, I want to relate to one too, but⊠Well. It'd be awesome if you would, but if that's too tall an order or too specific that's fine too. If you do, though, maybe college AU with roceit? -anon
Hi you're amazing! I love your writing and brand of writing and just I've read a lot of your stories and I love them all kskejejwuwugfhsv-
I was wondering, if you take requests, that maybe you could write a human AU with fake dating Roceit? With confident fat Janus because we need that! Or not, that's your choice!
(I sound like some snob asking for a highly specific coffee shi-) - anon
oh babe y'all wanted to be FED huh
Read on Ao3
Warnings: slight ableist/fatphobic language
Pairings: roceit
Word Count: 2487
Sometimes, you can get all of your work done in the library. Sometimes, people are ableists.
And sometimes there's something wonderful in finding out there's someone there for you as well.
Roman scrubs his hands over his face and sighs. Between waiting ages at the printer or absolutely destroying his retinas by staring at a screen for hours on end, he isnât unhappy with making the choice to save the environment by using less paper but god.
âAt least this pdf was convertible,â he mutters, scrolling down to see how many pages he has left. The last four werenât and reading without the right font is a fucking pain in the ass.
Seven pages left. Great.
Roman focuses on the screen and starts to mutter under his breath again. Focus on the word, figure it out, make the sentence, move on. Pause to take notes, make sure itâs legible to read later, and repeat.
A computer and heavy bag thuds onto the table next to him and he jumps, almost knocking his coffee over. He looks up, glaring at the person who stares down their nose at him like heâs some sort of stain. Rude.
âYouâve been here for like, three hours, dude,â they say, like thatâs supposed to justify their behavior, âmove. I need this spot.â
Roman looks around. Thereâs like, four more tables open. âCanât you just go sit somewhere else?â
âNo! This is my spot! You can go sit somewhere else.â
âWell,â Roman mutters, glaring at his screen again, âI was here first. So you can either wait until Iâm done or sit down.â
âDude, I swearââ
âExcuse me,â comes a smooth voice that has no business being this polished in the fucking library, âis this person bothering you, sweetie?â
Roman turns around and his mouth drops open.
âJ-Janus?â
Janus raises an eyebrow, crossing his arms and glaring at the dick with the heavy bag. Who, as a matter of fact, seems to be muttering and stuffing shit back into said bag.
âSorry Iâm late,â Janus drawls, still sounding way too confident and way too much like he knows whatâs going on, âgot held up after class.â
âUh, no problem,â he mumbles, glancing over his shoulder to see the asshole is still standing there, âjust, umâŠworking.â
âAh, well then, you wonât mind if I join you.â And with that, Janus sits down with a flourish, propping his chin up on his hand and fixing the asshole with an impressive look of disgust. âAnd youâŠyou can leave.â
âLook, buddyââ
ïżœïżœïżœMy partner and I have work to do,â Janus says, swiftly cutting them off and making sure Roman has no idea whatâs going on, ânow leave.â
Romanâs really glad there was no ambiguity that Janus couldâve been talking to him, because heâs about ready to bolt. Only when the asshole has retreated does Janus turn his gaze to him.
âSorry about that,â he says, flicking a speck of imaginary lint from his gloves, âhe seemed like he was bothering you. Thanks for playing along.â
âOh, uh, no, Iâm, uhââ Janus raises an eyebrow as Roman stumbles over his wordsâ âsorry. Uh, thanks?â
Janus chuckles. âOh, no worries, sweetie. I was happy to do it. AlthoughâŠâ
Janus squints at him and Roman fights the urge to squirm under that gaze.
âYouâre in my seminar class, arenât you?â Roman nods. âThe one that let out three hours ago?â
âYeah, uh-huh.â
âHave youâŠbeen here since then?â
Roman nods, trying to get back to work and, you know, maybe get out of here, only for Janus to reach across the table and still his hands as he goes to pick up the pen again.
âHave you eaten?â
âWhat?â
âEaten,â Janus says slowly, mouth stretching into a smile, âlunch, sweetie.â
âUhââ no, is the correct answerâ âI was going to?â
Janus just gives him a look.
ââŠno.â
âMm.â Janus glances at his computer and notebook. âYouâre not by any chance attempting to read all of the assignments in one go, are you?â
Romanâs guilty flush seems to answer that question for him. Janus sighs and itâs such an odd mixture of disappointment and fondness Roman hasnât earned that his brain spits out the only question he actually wants an answer to.
âWhy are you here?â
Janus chuckles. âIn the library, at this school, or are we already to the point of questioning the very nature of existence?â
Roman just blinks at him.
âOh, relax, sweetie, Iâm teasing.â Janus glances off in the vague direction the asshole wandered off to. He leans a little closer. âI know howâŠdifficult it can be to try and do work when they bother you.â
Romanâs cheeks flush. âOh, uhâŠthanks, then.â
Janus waves a hand. âItâs none of their business why youâre doing so much work at once. Even if it does make you skip lunch,â he adds with such a pointed look that Roman canât help splutter.
âI was going to! And youâre not my mother!â
âNo,â Janus purrs, âbut like any good partner, I like to make sure my sweetie takes care of themselves.â
Roman does not squeak, despite Janusâs chuckles, but he does start to fiddle with his pen. âI canâtâŠstop yet.â
âWhy ever not?â
âCan you stop,â Roman blurts, scrubbing his hands over his blushing face, âplease? For like, two seconds?â
âSorry, youâre just adorable.â
âStop, dude, seriously, if you want an actual answer to the question?â
âIâm done,â Janus chuckles, âIâm done, sorry.â
Roman takes a deep breath. He fiddles with the pen. âItâs justâwith my dyslexia, it takes a while toâŠfind the, umâŠâ
âZone?â
ââŠsure.â
Janus hums in understanding. Then he reaches into his own bag and pulls out a book of his own. âThen we may as well work together until youâre finished.â
Roman blinks. Hi, hello, brain is confused, what just happened in the last five minutes?
Janus waves a hand in front of his face. âHello? Sweetie? You okay?â
âSorry, Iâm justâtrying to process what happened.â Roman blinks again. âBecause it seems like some asshole tried to take my seat, you came up and pretended to be my partner to scare them away, proceeded to badger me about taking care of myself, and now youâreâŠstill here?â
Janus nods. âThatâs how I experienced it too, thatâs correct.â
ââŠso now whatâre we doing?â
âWell, Iâm also going to try and get some work done, youâre going to finish your work, and then weâre going to get lunch.â
âAnd what about the dude that now thinks weâre partners?â
Janus looks at him and shrugs. âIâm game if you are.â
Roman blinks again. IsâŠJanus suggesting they fake being in a relationship to, what, defend Romanâs right to sit wherever the fuck he wants for however long in a library?
âWhatâs in it for you?â
âPardon?â
âYou heard me,â Roman says, âwhatâs in it for you?â
Janusâs fingers still on the book heâs pulled out. He sighs and looks up at Roman.
âHow long have you known about your dyslexia?â
Jumping around a bit here, arenât we? âAbout six years, why?â
âAnd you know how to manage it? For you?â
âUh, yeah, why?â
âThat doesnât mean it goes away,â Janus says softly, âitâs still work, you justâŠknow how to do it now.â
âYeah, it still takes me time to do things, whyââ Romanâs eyes widenâ âoh. Oh, wait, you meanâwait, what do they have against you?â
Janusâs mouth tugs up into a smirk. âHow sweet.â
âShut up,â Roman mumbles, âyou know what I mean.â
Janus just winks at him before sobering. âWell,â he says wryly, gesturing at himself, âsurely you can understand thatâŠnot everyone treats you very well when you arenât the circumference of a toothpick.â
Oh. Theyâre those kind of assholes. Something Janus chuckles about when that thought gets out before Roman can stop them.
âQuite. I can manage them, but itâs still work.â He looks at Roman. âMaybe we can split the load?â
âIâm down with that.â
âWonderful. Now,â Janus says, mock sternly, âget back to work. We have lunch to get.â
Roman chuckles. âSure, sure, donât ask to borrow my notes.â
âI would never, I just forget things like a cool person and make things up that the professor likes to hear.â
Yeah, this is gonna go just fine.
As it turns out, it does. Roman wonât lie, he wasâŠskeptical about the viability of this plan of theirs. Heâs read the stories. He knows how this works. He knows about the misunderstandings and whether itâs a bet or a dare, something goes wrong.
ButâŠnothing does.
Watching Janus tear anyone to shreds is entertaining enough in class, where Roman gives up on taking debate notes and just watches because goddamn, but when he gets to stand there and just glare at some ableist while Janus verbally decimates them? Poetic cinema. He debates sneaking some popcorn into his jacket pocket but that would take away from the power of his glare.
And it is nice to have someone else do the work of glaring assholes away from his table when heâs working on reading. He would be lying if he said that actually having someone else to talk to isnât part of it. Itâs so much easier to keep track of where heâs messing up so he can focus on it during his exercises later.
âYou know,â Janus remarks as they leave the library one day, âyou can ask the professors for editable pdfs.â
âHuh?â
âFor your font stuff.â Janus nods toward his backpack. âI know you like to change the font so you can read it better, most of them have editable copies of the materials.â
âNot for the eBooks and scans and stuff.â
Janus huffs, waving his hand. âHow do you think they get the audio transcripts for the recorded versions? They have to transcribe it anyway, just ask for those.â
Roman stops. âHowâŠhow do you know those exist?â
Janus just taps the side of his nose and winks.
âCanâŠcan you do that?â
âOf course.â Janus links his arm through Romanâs. âAnything for you.â
That shouldnât do what it does to Romanâs chest.
Because yeah, okay, maybe Janus isâŠreally cute.
Like, unfairly cute.
No one should be able to rock that hat all the time. And the gloves. And the pocket watch. And the curly hair. And the attitude. And the impressive vocabulary. And the razor-sharp wit. And he actually knows how to flirt! What is flirting? All Roman knows is Gay Panicâą and Sufferingâą. What is this? Why is it allowed?
And why, oh why, did Janus have to be the one that started the fake-dating idea?
Because hereâs the thing. It would be so easy to just be friends with Janus. It would! Theyâre already friends now, fake-dating kind of does that to you. And Janus, despite what he wants everyone else to believe, is a fucking dork. His actual laugh is squeaky and bubbly and ugh, Roman could drown in it. And heâs really kind. Itâs not the same breed of kind that Romanâs used to, but goddamn, Janus is so sweet when he lets himself be. And itâs been so long since Roman had like, an actual friendâŠ
But it would also be so easy to be more than friends with Janus. To actually be able to take him out for dates and not just lunch at their janky cafeteria. To be able to spend time together that isnât just for show, or platonic, or just hanging out ranting about stupid dead supposed-to-be-smart people.
Again, Romanâs read the stories. He knows how this is supposed to go.
So when he takes a little longer to pack up one day, enough that Janus notices and eases himself back down into his seat with a soft, real, âwhatâs wrong, sweetie, let me help,â Roman prepares the bittersweet ânothing, Iâm fine,â and to swallow down everything real.
But insteadâŠ
âCan we, um, actually date?â
Janus blinks. âCome again, sweetie?â
Roman fiddles with the buckle on his bag. âI, um, I really appreciate what weâve been doing, and I, um, Iâm super happy being your friendâŠâ
âThe feeling is mutual.â
ââŠbut I, umââ god, why are words so hard?â âI think I would actually like to tryâŠdating you. For real.â
He peeks up nervously at Janus.
âIsâŠis that okay?â
Janus sits there, silent. He blinks a few times. Then a slow, real smile spreads across his face.
âRoman,â he says softly, almost too quiet, even in the hush of the library, âwhy do you think I proposed this idea in the first place?â
Oh.
Oh.
Roman blinks. âWait, youâyou?â
A pretty flush covers Janusâs face. âWell, IâŠwas planning to ask you normally, but then I saw you being absolutely tormented andâŠpanicked.â
âYou panicked?â
He throws his hands up. âWell, what was I supposed to do? The most gorgeous person in my seminar was being bullied and I was supposed to just let it happen?â
Wait. Back up. Roman is what?
âAnd yes, maybe I...wanted an excuse to be your friend first, but as I said, I panicked and soââ
âYouâwait, you think Iâm pretty?â
Janus stops, mouth open, before heâs scoffing. âRoman, have you seen yourself?â
âUhââ
âAt least youâre pretty,â Janus mutters under his breath, âpretty and dumb, but pretty.â
âHey!â
âYou can be big of brain and dumb of ass at the same time, sweetie.â
âOh, says the man whose idea was to fake-date me because you wanted to actually ask me out!â
âI will not be lectured on dramatics from a theater kid.â
âThatâs ex-theater kid to you.â
âOh, you know once you go, you never come back.â
Roman giggles. Then heâs laughing. Janus joins in and oh, this is much better than shoving feelings down and pretending they donât exist.
âYouâre such a fucking dork.â
âNo,â Janus purrs, reaching over to boop the end of Romanâs nose, âIâm your fucking dork.â
Oh. Oh, that soundsâŠreally good. Romanâs chest is really warm now, when did that happen? Janus smiles too.
âSoâŠdinner?â
âYouâre paying.â
âIâll pick you up at six.â

TRICUBE TALES
I'm going to start moving (and updating) reviews from my website, and today I wanted to start with a rules-lite system that packs a surprising amount of punch: Tricube Tales by Richard Woolcock of Zadmarâs Games. Thereâs a lot I want to say about it, which is crazy because itâs also pretty lite and simple. Also, the damn game is free (full thing in the DTRPG preview) so you can easily check it for yourself.
Iâll keep this brief: Tricube Tales is a minimalist, lite RPG using a mechanic where you roll 1 to 3 six-sided dice, and if any of them hit the target number you succeed. It uses fluctuating difficulty (a base scale of 4, 5, and 6) and Players make all the rolls. This makes it a great system for solo gaming and asynchronous play-by-chat games over Discord.
Character creation is very straight forward, appearing almost too simple but there is weight for it. Hereâs what a playable character looks like at a glance:
Sam Strongblade, a Brawny Dwarf Soldier Perks: Dwarf Stamina Quirks: Wooden Peg-Leg Karma: 3 / Resolve: 3
Thatâs it. You can glance at that, have an idea of what the character does, and maybe dismiss the fact that thereâs no stats (Karma and Resolve are point pools, which Iâll explain in a bit.)
That first statement is your archetype, which includes a trait (Agile, Brawny or Crafty) and a concept. Your archetype will help determine if youâre rolling two or three dice (or 1 if it has nothing in common with the action being performed). Your Perks establish special qualities, powers, abilities or unique equipment. Often you can spend a Karma point to use a perk significantly in an action (such as lowering the difficulty). Quirks, likewise, can hinder the character. A player can actively choose to work their Quirk into the narrative, taking a penalty but in doing so restores 1 Karma.
So, if you havenât guessed yet, Karma is the luck/fortune/power pool that lets the players do cool things. Resolve is the stress/health/endurance pool for every character. When a character hits 0 resolve, theyâre taken out of the conflict, and the victor (either PC or GM) gets to narrate what happens. When this happens to player characters, they return next scene, their Resolve restored but now with an Affliction â usually a temporary quirk, but sometimes these can become more serious. Character death isnât off the table as long as GM and Players agree to the arbitration.
Running things on the GM side is pretty easy-peasy. Most challenges are static pass-or-fail; more elaborate obstacles or tasks are assigned a pool of Effort tokens (where each successful die roll against it removes a token). Combat encounters can track multiple foes separately or you can just say âa horde of goblinsâ and track a single pool of effort tokens.
Thereâs a lot more going on â the game covers some quick ground on genre rules, like handling cybernetics, fear, magic & psionics, varying power levels, superheroes and vehicles. For the most part, all of these are just common-sense guides for arbitrating things based on context. This may be the deal breaker for some â this is a game system where players and the GM should be comfortable going back and forth making their own judgment calls on how things go down. Itâs pretty much âRoll the dice, and if you succeed â narrate what happens.â It was a system originally designed with kids in mind, but obviously it has appeal to older gamers as well.
I love the damn thing. Iâve played solo games with it, and even made a pocketfold game based on it.
Definitely check it out, and if you dig it â toss the guy a couples bucks. Buying the game gets you a PDF scaled for tablet/PC use as well as a Word doc so you can hack it and make your own stuff with it.

I think we should start a protection squad (although they donât need it because they can protect themselves) for Sun Wukong and Guanyin
âBegone monkie kid fandom trying to down grade these really interesting characters with interesting personalityâs and backstory ( the both of them like seriously Guanyin backstory is so cool) to a villain wile trying to justify your angsty backstory (that are no where near as cool as monkey who fights gods and Person who has 1000 arms and heads to help people in need) for the actual villainâ
So who wants to join
Me:*raises my hand*
Ps: sorry if I got Guanyin backstory wrong am not an expert on it.
Haha okay so some critiques on the jttw & associated media western fandom & fandom in general coming up, so please skip this upcoming text wall if you don't want to encounter my undoubtedly ~devastating~ words (i.e. don't like don't read as people love to say, & if I have to be inundated with images of my notp every time I go into the sun wukong tag then I imagine people can be chill with me expressing my opinions & giving people fair warning that I WILL be critiquing common fandom trends, but no need for you to see that if you donât want to. Cool? Cool.)
-----
PFFFFFTTT oh man there are many times when I feel like signing up for such a protection squad...when it comes to the current western jttw & Sun Wukong fandom I do feel like I'm often swinging at a rapid pace between "well it's fandom & people are allowed to make the stories they want" & "I am once again begging my fellow monkie kid enthusiasts (& sometimes creators) to do more research into the og classic/show it more respect so you can avoid any potentially offensive/off-the-mark misunderstandings of the status & cultural context of the characters in their country of origin (I promise it's super interesting & I can provide you with links to free pdf copies of the entire Yu translation, i.e. the best one ever created, so feel free to ask!) & maybe also stop constantly stripping away all the nuance of Sun Wukong's character for the sake of either making him an entire asshole so your little meow meow can look completely innocent in comparison and/or making the monkey king's entire life & character revolve around said meow meow."
Like I get that fandom's supposed to be a kind of anything-goes environment, but one thing that honestly seems to be true of a lot of fandoms--and the western one for Sun Wukong & co. is certainly not immune from this--is that there often seems to be a kind of monoculturalization at work in what stories are created & what character interpretations are made popular. Across a multitude of fandoms, you frequently see basically nothing but the exact same tropes being made popular & even being insisted on for the canonical work (especially hasty redemption arcs & enemies to lovers these days), the exact same one-dimensional character types that characters from an original work keep getting shoved into, the exact same story beats, etc. And I get it to an extent, as fandom is generally a space where people just make art and fic for fun & without thinking too hard about it & without any pressure.Â
This seems to, however, often unfortunately lead to the mentality that itâs your god-given right to do literally whatever you want with literally any cultural figure without even the slightest bit of thought put into their cultural, historical, and even religious context, even (and sometimes especially) when it comes to figures that are really important in a culture outside your own. For such figures--even if you first encounter them in a childrenâs cartoon--you should be a little more careful with what you do with them than you would with your usual Saturday morning line-up. It of course has to be acknowledged that there exists a whole pile of absolutely ridiculous & cursed pieces of media that are based on Journey to the West & that were produced in mainland China, but for your own education if nothing else I consider it good practice for those of us (myself certainly included) who arenât part of the culture that produced JTTW to put more thought into how we might want to portray these characters so that at the very least (to pull some things Iâve seen from the jttw western fandom) weâre not turning a goddess of mercy into an evil figure for the sake of Angst(TM), or relegating other important literary figures into the positions of offensive stereotypes, or making broad claims about the source text & original characterizations of various figures that are blatantly untrue, or mocking heavenly deities because of whatâs actually your misunderstanding of how immortality works according to Daoist beliefs. Yet while a lot of this is often due to people not even trying to understand the context these figures are coming from, I do want to acknowledge that the journey (lol reference) to understand even a fraction of the original cultural context can be a daunting one, especially since, as Iâve mentioned before, it can be really hard & even next to impossible to find good, accessible, & legitimate explanations in English of how, for example, the relationship between Sun Wukong and the Six-Eared Macaque is commonly interpreted in China & according to the Buddhist beliefs that define the original work.Â
That is to say, I do think itâs an unfortunate, if unavoidable, part of any introduction of an original text into a culture foreign to its own for there to be sometimes a significant amount of misinterpretation, mistranslations, and false assumptions. There is, however, a big difference between learning from your honest mistakes, & doubling down on them while dismissing all criticism of your misinterpretation into that abstract category of âfandom drama.â The latter attitude is kind of shitty at best and horrifically entitled at worst.Â
Plus, as Iâve discovered, there is a great deal of interest and joy to be drawn from keeping yourself open to learning aspects of these texts & figures that you werenât aware of! I can say from my own experience that Iâve always really enjoyed & appreciated it when individuals on this site who come from a Chinese background--and who know much more about the cultural context of JTTW than me--have taken the time to explain its various aspects. It often leaves me feeling like woooooaaaahhhhhHHH!!!! as to how amazingly full of nuanced meaning JTTW is like dang no wonder itâs one of Chinaâs Four Great Classical Novels.Â
And I guess that right there is the heart of a lot of my own personal frustration and disappointment with the ways that fandoms often approach a literary work or other piece of media...like donât get me wrong, a lot of the original works a fandom may grow around are just straight-up goofy & everyoneâs aware of it & has fun with it, yet the trend of approaching what are often nuanced and multi-layered works in terms of how well they fit and/or can be shoved into pretty cliche ideas of Redemption Arc or Enemies to Lovers or Hero Actually Bad, Villain Actually Good etc...well, it just seems to cheapen and even erase even the possibility of understanding the wonderful complexity or even endearing simplicity that made these works so beloved in the first place. Again, I feel like I need to make it clear that Iâm not saying fandom should be a space where people are constantly trying to one-up each other with their hot takes in literary analysis, but it would be nice and even beneficial to allow room for commentary that strives to approach these works in a multi-faceted way, analysis & interpretations that go against the popular fandom beliefs, & criticism of the work or even of fandom trends (yes it is in fact possible to legitimately love something but still be critical of its aspects) instead of immediately attacking people who try to engage in such as just being haters who donât want anyone to have fun ever (X_X). Â
----
Anyway, I know I didnât cover even half of the stuff you brought up in the first place anon, but I donât want any interested parties to this post to suffer too long through my text wall lol. I was asked to try my hand at illustrating Guanyin, but as with you Iâm nowhere near as informed as I should be about her, so I want to do more research on her history and religious importance before I attempt a portrait. Iâll try my best, and do plan to pair that illustration with my own outsiderâs attempt to summarize her character. From what little I do know I am in full agreement that her backstory is so incredibly amazing...just the fact that she literally eschewed the bliss of Nirvana to help all beings reach it, and even split herself into pieces in the attempt to do so (with Buddha granting her eleven heads and a thousand arms as a result)...man, I can see why sheâs such a beloved & respected deity.Â
----
As for what western fandom commonly does with everyoneâs favorite god-fighting primate...I can talk about this at length if thereâs interest, but for this post Iâll just say that I guess one lesson from all of this is that for all the centuries that have passed since Journey to the West was first completed, literally no one drawing inspiration from the original tale in the west (lol) has come even slightly close to being able to equal or even capture half the extent of the nuance, complexity, religious, historical, and cultural aspects, and humor that define Wu Cheng'en's story of an overpowered monkey who defied even Buddha.
So thank the heavens we'll always have the original.

Ok so I am not big fan of Amazon. I have bought a few ebooks on Kindle for small romance writers since that's where they're selling their ebooks. But outside of the stuff I get cause it's only on Amazon, I tend to prefer to avoid kindle.
So as yall know, I recommend various alternatives for reading ebooks in the language you're studying:
Pleco - if you're studying Chinese this is one of the best options. It allows you to read web pages, and ebooks pdfs etc, has generated audio for words and the entire text, great definitions, and can Google translate passages.
Kyreader - free ebook reader for ios. Features a good click dictionary/translation of words, generated audio for the entire text. Can generate audio and recognize text on pdf files which is nice. I've tested it for chinese, French, japanese and it worked well for all 3.
Moonreader+ - one time purchase ebook reader for Android. Features a good click dictionary (once you figure out how to set it up), generated audio for entire text. Seems to work as well as Kyreader. (Only thing is I do notice I need to go in and manually change my phones text to speech language whenever I change the language I'm reading and want generated audio).
Idiom - free web page reader and YouTube video dual subtitle tool. Features click dictionary (its as good as lingq but not as good as Pleco), generated audio for text, and for youtube videos features translations for each line and ability to replay any line/skip to various lines. It is less perfectly tailored for chinese than pleco, but overall for Any Language Immersion I recommend this app. It works about as good as lingq, but Idiom is free. (Only thing I do notice is on android I have to change my text to speech language on my phone settings depending on the language I'm reading in Idiom if I want generated audio, on iphone the generated audio automatically spoke in whatever language I was reading).
Now. There are a couple particular reasons I do like lingq and Kindle in... some ways for language learning.
Lingqs coolest feature, in my opinion, is how it COUNTS the amount of words you've learned/looked up. So you can track your progress. However, lingq has a lot of weak spots in my opinion. I prefer to recommend dongchinese for chinese learners if you want the word learned tracking feature, or perhaps Readlang for language learners generally (though I have not explored Readlangs features much).
What I like about Kindle? 1. I can buy Japanese ebooks on amazon.jp and read them on kindle... which is the easiest way I've found japanese ebooks (print books are easier to find but then I can't use digital click dictionary tools). 2. Once you figure out HOW to set up amazon.jp and a corresponding Kindle account, Kindle has very good definitions (they are lacking pinyin for chinese though). There is no audio in the click dictionary in Kindle, which sucks compared to Pleco (or idiom), but the overall extent of definition quality is quite good (better than lingq and idiom). Kindle also has a feature that tells you how long it is taking you to read each section, and based on your reading speed then how long until you finish the novel! This particular feature is so cool to me! Because often a difficult part of reading in a target language is trying to figure out how much time I need to plan to set aside to read a chapter or X pages, and how many hours a novel is going to take so how many hours I need to read per day to finish that novel in a reasonable time frame. Just an FYI if you were looking for that specific feature, Kindle has it.
#rant#reading#reader tools#kindle#its cool to me to see how long its taking me to read in a given languahe#and if the reading speed time is improving

sadness over a3! eng i guess
oof just on my 700th day.....
kinda sad because of the announcement about A3! ENG server shutting down soon due to financial difficulties at LIBER/CYBIRD in the past two years (covid-19 related, etc.). according to a rather in depth reddit comment that had links to LIBER's publicly available financial reports + some financial reports from LIBER's parent company, Aeria, in english, covid-19 really hit LIBER hard since they had to cancel many money making events, from pop-up shops for the typical anime merch trinkets (keychains, plushes, pins, etc.) to the huge in-person events (voice actor meetups, the stage plays of MANKAI LIVE, etc.). due to shrinking player base on the ENG server + major loss of profits on both JPN and ENG servers, LIBER had to choose one or the other and they chose the JPN one, which i totally understand since it's way bigger there and the JPN fanbase will continue to give the franchise money more often. also, another person found a financial report/estimate from the google play store or something, and A3! ENG only made ~$20K to ~$10K in the past few months, which i guess is not enough to keep a server and localization company afloat.Â
i got pretty attached to the characters and it was a great game to help get by during college. and honestly, while i am very sad about this, again, i understand why LIBER did this, looking at their financial report from 2020. I would LIBER save the entire franchise rather than shut all the servers down, making us all unable to see our favorite actors ever again, even if it means that we ENG fans will have to go thru the extra steps of finding/reading fan translations, wikis, etc., to read any further stories from where A3! ENG left off. still, A3! ENG's localization was something special. i'm saying this as a TKRB JPN player who read the wiki for all the character voice lines and then had to see the official TKRB ENG localization make Yamabushi Kunihiro a rapper for some reason? lol. it was....weird.... meanwhile, all the memes and slang in A3! ENG didn't seem out of place and all fit their personalities because 3/4 of the troupes were all high school to college age and 3 of them were ~Gamers~. Out of all the gachas i've played, i feel like the only other F2P gacha game that had this incredibly smooth, all cultural jokes/puns translated in a way that still makes sense/fits the character/doesn't require a galaxy brain and some TL note to understand, is probably dragalia lost and that's only because it has frickin Nintendo localizing/publishing it globally for CyGames. Nintendo. i'll eventually read the fan translations of A3!'s Act 3 on the wiki, but it won't be the same without Kazunari's super high-energy influencer slang of "'whoa fam! that's totes 'blammable, gotta take a pic!" or Itaru's gremlin Gamer speak of "lol get rekt noobs" or Tsuzuru's tired dying breath of "that ain't it chief." the appropriate slang and relatable meme speak of the localization really helped humanize these characters as people of their respective ages, rather than just a typical formal speak or some directly translated JPN slang -> ENG that turns out super awkward that can be found in bad localizations.
going back to the reddit comment too, the death of A3! ENG servers could have bad repercussions in the future for other joseimuke games. josei, if you for some reason have been in the anime fandom but still don't know this term, is basically the genre of stories/video games/media/etc aimed at women. it's the mature adult counterpart to seinen, media aimed at adult men. basically shoujo/shonen = elementary/middle school/high school aimed while josei/seinen = high school/college/adult aimed if that helps. Joseimuke is a part of josei that is not specifically romance. while some josei/joseimuke can overlap with otome, aka female aimed dating sims/romance media, they have many things about them that make these all separate genres. one of the official A3! ENG translators and a known fan translator of another joseimuke gacha, Mahou Yaku/Wizardâs Promise, minami, goes more in depth with this in a twitter thread.Â
A3! was an actor raising game, and a big part of it was found family and relationships that were platonic. yet it got advertised as an otome, which has more connotations with dating sims and brings to mind other shoujo/otome games and anime where the cast is all high schoolers and the setting is most often in a high school. but, other than some characters making flirty jokes or implied to have crushes on Izumi/player character, many character relationships with Izumi are platonic and not romantic at all. Spring Troupe in the game also jokingly calls themself a family. the entire Mankai Company is basically found family. plus, since the game actually has time passing in story and the characters age with each year, half of the characters arenât even in high school anymore. a large majority of them are in college or are graduated by now, with only a few still in high school. iâm not surprised if a reason that some people left the game was due to feeling bored with the slice of life/not romantic story, feeling that they were lied to about it being an otome, which was falsely advertised since it is a game meant for the older teens/adults demographic of josei/joseimuke.
iâm worried that other japanese companies will look at this shut down as a âjosei/joseimuke doesnât work well in the westâ and never localize other josei/joseimuke gacha games like Mahou Yaku, EnStars, Twisted Wonderland, Helios, etc.
while i like otome and shoujo, i, as a 23/soon to be 24 year old college graduate and now tax paying adult, want more stories that have more mature themes and characters that are more my age so i donât have to feel awkward when iâm playing some dating sim and i, a literal 23 year old adult, and trying to woo a 16 year old. itâs...a little awkward to say the least. i would gladly welcome more mature media that is categorized as josei/joseimuke.
sorry if this is all over the place, but overall im just sad that A3! ENG is shutting down. i donât know if iâll join the JPN server yet. iâm def going to read the Act 3 story via fan translators on the wiki, but A3! gameplay was...boring lmao. as much as i love A3!, im sure that the constant event grind/burnout and boring rng gameplay turned people off too and i dont blame them. i felt the burnout bad since i participated in basically every event since day 1. it. is. rough. iâm not joining the hellish thunderdome that is the JPN server and im not ranking anymore as a F2P player lmao. literally had to play almost every waking free moment to get into the 30%-20% bracket as a F2P person and i never got to top 20%-10%, much less top 1% lmao. iâm donât whale enough lol.Â
i feel like i should probably just. crack open my genki 2 textbook and uhhh totally legal pdf copy of tobira. so i can just. get the JPN version of games in the first place so i donât have to worry about getting shafted since overseas fans are often considered expendable.Â
i wish that, when any games that are online end, gacha or mmo or anything, anything online, companies will let fans archive things. or like. release a book that is just the story text or something. like. CYBIRD is letting us still technically play the game and have the story and all, but what if they eventually later shut everything down? why not just release a pdf/ebook thatâs just the text of the eng localization for some money? iâd buy it. for nostalgia and rereads and all and also archiving purposes. i think iâll try to help with any english localization archive projects if i can so that the hilarious and incredible localization that was a work of love from the translation team doesnât just disappear forever.
well.
thatâs it for now. as i said, guess iâll head to the app for one of the last times to read the last unread stories and mini stories i have left, then the wiki for Act 3, and then i guess iâll crack open genki 2 and bunpo.....
some fun random links for you to think about!
random ffxi article that came to mind (if ffxiv ever shuts down in the next 20 years or whatever iâd be cool to get a statue of my character at the end)
and death of a game playlist by NerdSlayer Studios on Youtube that has me thinking a lot about game preservation and losing MMOs and games
the lost media wiki  and blameitonjorgeâs lost media iceberg
other gacha games iâve played that have shut down that i think about sometimes because the loss of A3! ENG isnât my first rodeo:

Hey guys!!! I've been working on a post-canon Wandersong fic! Come watch Bard have Issues :- )
The first chapter is a shorter one, sort of like a teaser/exposition! Check it out right freaking here or on ff.net (with non-ideal formatting) bc i don't really wanna post on AO3. The second chapter is in the works >: 3

Chapter 1
(General warnings: inability to breathe; heights)
Your footsteps used to echo through sacred halls no human had walked before, accompanied by the eager beating in your chest. Heartbeat â footstep â echo. A heavy, impending rhythm.
The only thing you heard was the glorious cheer of the crowd. The anticipation of victory made every breath ring like brass, like the blaring trumpets that would surely welcome you home. You felt golden, and colossal, like the Sun. Both of you had no choice but to shine.
The edge of your blade vibrated with a song of its own, metallic and crackling with static electricity. And you let it sing.
Time after time, you would sound the sharp final note of this intoxicating symphony.
Each time, for a split second of silence in your speeding heartbeat, you would be left alone, in a dark without a sound. A moment of ultimate finality in a place that was no longer a place.
Time after time, you would be brought back into the light and air, reaping your rewards, letting the world's ecstatic cheer crash against you like waves, flood you, fill you.
Not this time.
This time, the dark does not subside.
This time, you have nowhere to go back to.
What is worse, perhaps, is that you have nowhere to be.
The place that is no longer a place is all you have now. The cosmic opposite of spaciousness means that, in the suffocating absence of air, you are not granted the relief of feeling the walls close around you, the world smother you. There are no limits to the vacuum; there is no vacuum; there is no thing.
When your bare, hoarse voice escapes, lonely and flat, there is no ether to reverberate through, no echo to harmonize with you.
You are nowhere. You are a song that cannot sound. You are the only morsel of consciousness to vaguely grasp your own melody.
You are barely anything.
You are irreversibly alone.
***
A note catches in Bard's throat, and for a moment they are breathless, and shaken. Then they cough â like the fuzzy wheezing of a clogged flute â and feel the air fill their lungs once again.
Miriam's voice sounds from high above, impatient and strained with effort.
- Hello?? A little help???
Kiwi shakes off the uncomfortable reminder of last night and raises their head, up to the tops of two twin trees, where Miriam is trying desperately to keep her broom straight. It does seem quite hard to do with just one hand, while the other is occupied, clutching one end of a rope stretched between the two parted crowns.
Kiwi clears her throat one more time before singing out:
- A lit-tle bit high-er! đ¶
Miriam grumbles, and her broom lurches up just a bit. The rope now runs parallel to the ground, a level bridge from where its other end is glued to the opposite trunk.
- Now??
- Perfeeect! đ¶
From down below, Bard can't quite make out her movements, but they can imagine them vividly: Miriam pressing the end of the rope into the tree bark, letting the adhesive substance on its tip fix it in place; then her wrapping her fingers around it, face shifting into a concentrated frown. They can almost hear the quiet exasperated sigh, masking the nervousness Miriam always feels when casting less familiar spells and never wants to show.
As a thick woody vine stretches and knits itself along the length of the rope, connecting the flaming-red leafy tops, Bard claps their hands excitedly.
- Great job, Miriam!!
Miriam is already floating down to the ground. She is trying really hard to not look relieved.
- Yeah, - she mutters, glancing to the side, - thanks. Let's just... hope it holds. - She nods at the free space behind her, impatiently inviting Kiwi to join her on the broom, to rise back up to the connected crowns.
- Sure you're holding on well?
Bard adjusts their position in the hold of a curving branch and flashes Miriam a slightly tense smile.
- All good here! đ¶
Miriam frowns.
- Don't fall. Here you go.
Bard takes one end of yet another piece of rope from her hands and holds it up to the level of the previously conjured vine above their head. The sticky mushroom mash takes hold, but they do not take their hand away as to not test the glue with the rope's weight.
Miriam flies over to the other tree trunk, stretching the rope along the already formed scaffold. She glances at Bard nervously, and they give her an enthusiastic thumbs up â before immediately fretfully grabbing the branch below him, having almost lost his balance.
- Don't fall! - Miriam exclaims emphatically. Her tone is nothing short of disbelief: perhaps at the fact that she has to repeat herself so soon, perhaps at the fresh confirmation that the warning is actually warranted. - Eya... Just. Hold on, hold the rope, and don't.. stare while I do this.
Kiwi graciously looks away, letting their glance glide across the treetops shimmering in the light evening breeze. It's a new, fascinating perspective from this high up: the mass of moving, rustling red stretching all around them, making them forget about the ground below.
Bard takes the moment to appreciate the old trees, some of the tallest ones in the forest, raising him above their smaller siblings, into this weird valley of whispering leaves. Here, there is only the gentle waving of foliage and the sky that goes on and on, painted gentle orange by the setting sun.
Saphy was right. This is the perfect spot for a little perch, especially with the two crowns so conveniently close together. The thought brings Bard a gentle kind of joy. It is as if the forest itself was encouraging the initiative, eager to accommodate humans' curiosity.
Bard breathes in, taking in the calming alien view, and swings their legs in the air softly to the tune of the simple song they are so used to humming. It comes out a bit more strained, this time. There is a slight tightness in their chest, but they will not dwell on that. It can probably be chalked up to balancing many, many feet above the ground.
The rough bark of a newly formed vine softly bumps against Bards fingers, and they accommodate it, letting the woody liana reach the trunk and sink into it, as if having grown out of it many years ago. Miriam is doing amazing!
- You're doing amazing! - Kiwi promptly shares aloud, slightly breathless. Magical feats never lose their novelty, not to them.
Miriam skips past the usual embarrassment at being complimented and straight to a quizzical look.
- You sure you don't wanna' help?
- I'm helping! - Bard replies readily, feeling just slightly disregarded. Miriam fumbles.
- Ugh, no, I... - the words come out loud and annoyed in her rush to explain herself. She pauses - with obvious effort - and takes a few seconds. - ...Yeah, you are. Thanks. Just... aurgh, - she gives a jerky impatient shrug, - you know what I mean!!
Bard does know. Combining spellwork and singing is something the two have been experimenting with quite a lot. Bard could probably orchestrate the movement of the vine, direct it with their voice while Miriam is inducing its growth, instead of her sending it along the pre-marked trajectory of the hemp rope. But they shake their head, perhaps a bit too hurriedly.
- This is better! And you're doing great!!
Miriam examines their face, looking skeptical, vaguely confused.
- Fine, - she mutters in resignation. - If you say so. Toss me the next one.
Bard complies.
Their humming has stopped now. Instead, they turn their full attention to Miriam, promptly forgetting her earlier request. She throws a slightly irritated glance in their direction, but does not say anything, letting them observe as a new sprout rises out of a previously bare section of the bark.
Kiwi looks at the sturdy vines that will hold wooden planks, that will in turn hold a shiny new telescope. One of the many Elara has prepared for her world-wide project, to direct everyone's questioning eyes to the sky, to the novel, unfamiliar stars. Together, the people of Earth will explore the horizons of this young universe that has become their new home.
The thought of stars tickles Bard's throat, like the beginning of a song. The faraway lights, so tiny against the vast dark night sky, trading rays and stitching into constellations, must be creating a symphony of their own - one Bard is so eager to discover.
- This is gonna be great, isn't it? - they ask, their eyes clouded by visions of otherworldly landscapes.
- Yeah... - Miriam is silent for a moment, and Bard comes back to earth to look at their friend, questioning. - I don't... know much about stars... But if the astronomer lady says we can help--
- Of course!! đ¶ - Kiwi all but jumps up in a rush of passion. - We just need to look! We will find something really cool!!
Miriam smirks, but the smirk is unprecedentedly close to a smile, only adding to Bard's emotional high. They swing their legs in the air excitedly. It's new, and thrilling, seeing their friend like this: with the steadily growing readiness to find joy in the world around her.
- I'm glad we're doing this together, Miriam, - they say, smiling, as they shuffle to the side to secure yet another piece of rope against the trunk. - I like sharing things with you.
Miriam's hand holding the rope jerks just slightly as she looks away, momentarily flustered.
- Uh... yeah. Me too, - she blurts out, then draws a breath. - It... wouldn't be the same on my own. Or. You know. Without you.
The last vine is grown, and both of them sit down on the soon-to-be-platform, listening to the rustling of the leaves and watching the sun slowly sink towards the horizon.
Bard glances over at Miriam and examines the new look on her face, the one they've been spotting more and more. It is quiet surprise, like stepping out into the garden early in the morning and being met with a perfect gentle breeze. These days, the world seems to keep startling Miriam in the best of ways.
Miriam appears to have felt their gaze and meets it, eyebrow raised. They do not feel the need to explain, simply smile and dangle their feet happily. Miriam smirks and turns her face back to the gentle peachy sunset.
- ...It's gonna be nice, - she says contemplatively, - spending time here.
Kiwi takes a deep breath and feels the tightness in their chest ease and melt away.
- Yeah.
The walk back to Saphy and Miriam's home in the orange twilight is comfortable and special. Bard rants about the trees back in Langtree, and how different they are, and how she never climbed any before, in all her time living out in nature. Miriam grumpily recounts all the times she had to, to get potion ingredients back when she hadn't yet learned to properly fly a broom. When exiting the woods, she points out a specific tree which, she is convinced, has a personal vendetta against her, always tripping her up on its bulging roots. There is that unmistakable comfort of familiarity in her voice. For Miriam, exasperation often seems to be the easiest way to express her deep fondness for everything that is home.
They both take a second at the edge of the forest as the colorful house comes into view, just as the last rays of sunlight fall down the roof, then softly go out, one by one.
Saphy welcomes them with a boiling cauldron. (Her firm habit of using it indiscriminately, for food and for potion-making, is something Bard is still getting accustomed to.) Over dinner, she asks the two about their exploits with genuine, animated interest. Miriam shares the details, half-begrudgingly, throwing quick glances at Bard in moments of self-consciousness. They chime in readily and take the opportunity to praise Miriam's skills, seemingly making her more miserable in the process. It is a new and sweet routine for the three of them.
It is well into the night by the time Kiwi and Miriam get to setting up the guest cot, and Miriam keeps stoically fighting back her yawns. She isn't great at staying up past a certain hour.
- It isn't very bouncy, - she mutters, dissatisfied, as Bard plops down onto the thin mattress.
- It's great! - Bard reassures, running their hand over the clean sheets. - Goodnight, Miriam!
- G'night, - she mumbles sleepily, already walking towards the rope ladder hanging from the second level. With her hand on one of the rungs, she lingers for a moment and looks over her shoulder. - Are you still sure about tomorrow?..
Bard tenses up for a moment and does their best to shake it off.
- It... Yeah! It has been a while, so...
The rest of the sentence hangs in the air between them, irresolute. Miriam sighs quietly and makes her way back to the cot.
Their friend's arms wrap around them in a steady, comforting hug, and Kiwi suddenly feels very fragile. They return the embrace, hands on her back, and stay there for a few seconds, allowing themself to feel small.
Miriam pulls away and looks at them, eyelids heavy and droopy.
- Need... - a big, poetic yawn finally escapes her, despite all the efforts, -...company?
Bard shakes his head.
- You should get your rest!
- ...Yeah. Probably best, - Miriam grumbles and turns away with a final awkward pat on Bard's shoulder.
Halfway up the ladder, she sighs in annoyance and pauses, hanging from the wall with her head turned.
- Could you maybe try counting sheep this time? Silently??
Bard gives a couple of hurried flustered nods. Sharing space with other people again is proving to be difficult to combine with their musical routine.
- Sleep well, Miriam! And, - they grope for words for a bit, but don't find anything better than, - thank you.
Miriam nods slowly, turning away.
- Yeah. You too.
Bard dresses down and flops on top of the cot, hands on their chest. They listen as the house fills with the familiar duet of snores and quiet whistles and smile to themself, thinking about how rapidly Miriam nods off when she is tired enough.
Lying in bed and exploring the authentic years-old webs in the corners of the room, Kiwi goes over the events of the day in her head, and ponders what is waiting for them tomorrow.
A glum gnawing feeling rises in their chest, clawing at it from the inside. They push it away. It will be okay. And they won't be alone.
They lie there, trying not to worry. About tomorrow, about last night, about what this night will bring. They try not to think about the nightmares, and about the tightness in their chest, and the labored sounds of the once-effortless tune.
They close their eyes and dutifully imagine a sheep. A reeeally fluffy one. With big, shining eyes, and with a spring in its step, ready to conquer the highest of fences.
- One đ¶, - they sing to themself, as quietly and softly as they can.
The note does not come out right.

How (not) to say âfuckâ in Etruscan (and other things I cannot believe I spent so much time tracking down for a throwaway joke in a Witcher slash-fic)
Buried in chapter 4 of my fic Something Nice is a joke which, as much as it amused me, no-one else is going to get unless I explain it. So here we go.
For the last few people in this fandom who haven't heard yet: The Witcher 3's vampire-language is Etruscan. To my knowledge, there's never been an official statement from CDPR to confirm this, but the evidence (ie. that basically all the vampire vocab can be found in online Etruscan sources) seems pretty solid. To explain why this made me go oooooh that's so NEAT, we need a little context.
Context!
The Etruscans (in my admittedly far-from-expert understanding) were a people who lived in Italy back before the Romans got around to conquering-slash-assimilating the rest of the peninsula, and the language they spoke is one of the most frustratingly mysterious of the ancient world. Most dead languages are at least related to something modern linguists have a decent handle on, but Etruscan seems to have been related to almost nothing else spoken â it may even have pre-Indo-European roots (a whoooole other tangent I am in no way qualified to cover).
Surprisingly, we do owe our modern Latin alphabet in part to the Etruscans, since the earliest Roman alphabets were adapted from the Etruscan (who got it from the Greeks, who got it from from the Phoneticians, and so on). The Etruscans may even be the reason we're stuck with so many weirdly redundant K-sounds (not only K and C, but X and Q, which are really just 'ks' and 'kw' with an overblown sense of superiority).
But being able to sound out every surplus K-word from an Etruscan inscription isn't much help nowadays when there are no surviving Etruscan dictionaries to tell us what it actually means â not even a decent Etruscan Rosetta stone to give us a push-start. So while modern linguists may rattle off Ancient Greek fluently or puzzle out Egyptian hieroglyphs from thousands of years before the Etruscans even had an alphabet, the Etruscan vocabulary available to us nowadays remains embarrassingly limited. Bits have been figured out from context or thanks to loanword exchanges with their neighbours (plenty of ancient Greeks and Romans certainly spoke Etruscan, even if they failed to write it down), but a lot is still as mysterious to the experts as it would be to you and me.
So why to I love the idea of using Etruscan as the Witcherâs vampire-language so much? Basically, if you want a language that will sound both old and reliably alien to anyone listening to it â be they the mainstream English-speaking market or the original Polish-language audience â Etruscan is a damn good call. You're not going to have much vocabulary to draw from, but it's not like there's a lot of vampire-chatter in the game anyway. It's a cool little easter egg for fans nerdy enough to try and figure out what they're saying.
Translations and Sources
You arenât going to find a lot of great Etruscan language sources on the web â few of the easily-discovered online sources on Etruscan vocab appear to have been updated within the last ten years, and lord knows how consistent some of these are with current scholarship (let alone how sure linguists can be about anything with a task like this). All the same, have some links you may find useful:
Etruscology â Brief, but more readable than most
Lexicons.ru Etruscan Glossary â Probably one of the best collections of many terms in one place
Maravot.com Etruscan Language pages â Hard to navigate, but gosh there are a lot of vocab here I have not seen elsewhere
Old, Tripod-hosted Etruscan Glossary â I think these are mostly just the same terms from the Lexicons page, but in harder-to-use format
Etruscan word search â Decent, but not the most extensive vocab
Introduction to the Etruscan Language â Looks to be from Maravot.com, but in pdf format
Paleoglot.comâs Etruscan tag â Blog by an actual linguist who regularly discusses Etruscan material, and who even created their own translation applet! â which was, unfortunately, in flash, and is thus no longer usable. (There is a certain irony that even the tools available online to help you understand Etruscan are written in a language that is now no longer supported or understood by any modern browser.)
Not that translating whatâs in the game is going to be easy, oh no. Take, for example, the oh-god-please-don't-kill-me ceremonial greeting Geralt has to offer to the Unseen Elder to survive that meeting â "Eclthi, lautni ama".
'Eclthi' is apparently a "demonstrative (locative)" (âhereâ, âthereâ, etc). "Lautni" is trickier â it means a freed slave, but may also imply a familial relationship or a client of sorts, while the root âlautnâ apparently designates simply âpossession.â House slaves in the ancient world were often considered part of the family, and freed slaves were an important class in many ancient cultures, who often maintained relationships with their former masters, so you can see the internal logic, but what sense was the Witcher using it in? Itâs hard to know.
"Ama" is possibly worse â most translations seem to have taken it as "to be", but sometimes also âto loveâ, or even "now" or "meanwhile." Then you hit the question of Etruscan grammar, and I have no idea where Iâd even start. So, with a little creativity, you could probably translate that phrase as anything from "take this and consider me a friend" to "meanwhile, this is family" to "a demonstration of love from your slave." I mean, you've got the same general theme going there regardless, but there's a lot of ambiguity in the inflection.
For what it's worth, I feel garasham's translation efforts are easily the most convincing I've seen â they have the above line as âHere I am a slave / a friend / kindredâ FWIW. (Mind you, given the wiki doesn't even try to do more than offer you one possible meaning for each word, there's not exactly much competition out there).
So, bringing this all back to that fic and how to say âfuckâ in Etruscan...
I've already gone to the web's Etruscan dictionaries once while I was writing Forget-Me-Not, seeking inspiration for a 'real' name for "the Queen of the Night" from the first Witcher game. Neither 'queen' or 'night' got me far, but the Etruscans did apparently have a goddess of the moon called 'Aritimi, Artume or Artames', which worked pretty well. If anything it's almost too close to the better-known Greek goddess Artimis, who was obviously a relative (ancient cultures bleed into each other even when they're not bleeding all over each other, nothing new there), but I'm not going to be picky.
However, being a) a giant nerd, who b) writes a lot of smut, and c) is no more mature deep down inside than the rest of us, I couldn't resist seeing if I could find some slightly more obscene vocabulary. Did the Etruscans have a word for, say, 'fuck'?
Alas, if they did (and I mean, they totally did, c'mon), the web wouldn't tell me about it. Nor could I find much else relating to sex or genitalia (male or female), or even a decent word for 'thrust'.
On the flipside, there were a couple of different terms meaning 'plough'. And anyone who's played â well, any of the games, but especially Witcher 2 â would probably realise exactly why that filled me with so much glee.
Speaking of which, here, have a picture which is in no way related:
The fact that the various Etruscan terms meaning âploughâ could also apparently be translated as things like âto worshipâ or âto act through movement, including ritual acts,â or that an important mythological figure was âa prophetic child who sprang from a freshly plowed furrowâ was in no way discouraging.
The word I ultimately picked was 'esari'. Admittedly, variations on the prefix âar-â/âara-â/âarasâ were much more consistently attested to throughout the various online Etruscan dictionaries as âterms meaning plowâ, but figuring out how to convert an Etruscan prefix into a satisfying word is officially where even my enthusiasm for all this nonsense gives out. Esari was, by comparison, already a much more solid-sounding term, so letâs go with that.
Why go to all this trouble anyway? Well, the honest answer is âentirely for my own amusementâ, but the nominal excuse comes right back to âso I could give Regis and Geralt this little exchange during a sex scene.â
"Unless you have any particular objection," said Regis, moving to straddle Geralt's body, "I thought we might engage in some esari... hm, what was the equivalent term in your language again?" The vampire leaned in close to Geralt's ear as he made a show of remembering his answer, "Ah, yesâI thought I'd fuck you."
Never let anyone tell you you never learnt anything from porn!
