I've been working through a bunch of perspectives aaall weekend and am watching through some more right now while I'm working on a commission, and bdub's ep was SOO good. His editing is so lovely! I love the serene and cinematic vibes, an absolutely delightful episode to watch. Amazing interior on his build as always. Very cozy. Hope the mailbox thing takes off, hermits crawling out of their bases and holes to check their mail every morning... such a wholesome and mundane everyday event to think about.
Also, Grians wheat & sunflower field.... such a lovely image. I hope it gets kept for the rest of the season, I absolutely love crop and flower fields. Really makes me wish minecraft wheat and sunflowers both grew a bit taller!
Tango also FINALLY getting to do regular ole' minecrafting again after being locked to a dungeon for months and months is gonna be super fun. I loved decked out of course but his regular minecrafting is where its at for me, he always blows me away with how good at everything he is...
Joel was also a very silly little goofy boi. I love his longer series so its gonna be exciting having an excuse to catch his videos more often now that he's on HC! I click very well with his sense of humour I just prefer him interacting WITH people!
Hmm what else... Pearlie a little Silly as always. Gem's skin design for this season is so cute can't wait for a good chance to draw it. Zed... gonna be interesting to see his antics as always. Mumbo's starter base is cool and his GRAPHICS! for this season. So amazing (yes I saw the binary yes I am crying)....
There are probably some I'm forgetting and still a few eps I haven't even caught yet (Ren, False, Impulse, Cleo...), so its a lot of fun to have a long watch list like this :0 I hope I get to catch them before peoples ep2s start rolling out!!

Round of Randoms #1 - Shorties
Tumblr media
The one with the skeleton, the cat boys, and the card game.
Look who's back!
After a much-needed break to cool off from the Aikatsu marathon, here I again to delight the world with my unnecessary opinions. XD
You may be asking yourself, what is this? Well, I was thinking of what to do to come back to the blog, but still on my break mindset and I didn't want to get back to my regular stuff. So I thought about it and decided to get back to my roots and one of the reasons why I created this blog in the first place and went down on my anime list and see what was there that I could watch and bring to here. I've made a huge list of things, divided them into categories, and I'm planning to watch them in between the regular shows I comment here. I was lazy and pretty much only picked stuff that came out this year, but is still a somewhat diverse range of the usual things I talk about here.
Since I wanted something quick and easy to do at first I went with my "shorties" category that is composed of shows with a run time of 15 minutes or less per episode, and "one-shot" OVAs, in other words, things that I could watch on a single day with not much trouble. These are "reviews" of the entire season so they won't be as detailed, but that was never the point of these to begin with, If there's a show on my list that I have a lot to talk about I'll probably do it on a separate post.
Anyway, let's begin.
MYSTERIA Friends
Starting off is MYSTERIA Friends (or Manaria Friends in the original). This wasn't a show that was on my list actually, but once I saw that it was only 10 episodes of 15 minutes each and that both Yoko and Nana were voicing characters on this show I was "okay, I need to watch this now". I had no previous knowledge of anything related to this show and I was kinda excited to see what it was about, I don't know what I was expecting from it, but in reality, I got really disappointed.
Like, the show technically is gorgeous, I think that because of the shorter airing time they could pay more attention to the drawing and animation and you get stunned by the visuals. The soundtrack is also pretty decent, there's nothing exceptional aside of maybe the insert song Nana's character sings in one the episodes, but the general background music is pretty effective on putting yourself on that world.
Tumblr media
With that being said, this is probably where the positives end. The show has no plot, which in itself it's not a problem, most of this short shows are episodic anyway and that's one of the charms of this type of anime, but in this case it's a problem because it just seems empty, the show seems to be trying to talk about inter-species relationships, but it actually never touches on that what gives this "empty media" vibe. This ties in with another problem that is the fact that this fantastic, magical setting has no purpose of being there other than aesthetics, I feel that the excuse of going "magic medieval" was we gonna show how this human and this half-demon can get along and bring peace and harmony to this world, but they never touch on the topic and it becomes pretty obvious that they only went with that route because the author has a thing for girl dragons.
Which ties in with my biggest problem, the useless ecchi. Honestly, the amount of ecchi they got to put in such a short amount of time is unbelievable, like, right on the second episode Grea is pain because she's molting, but the scene is shot as like she's having sex and the moans are more like pleasure moans rather than moans of someone who's in pain, and is just so uncomfortable, and to add more into this weirdness Anne steals the shed skin of Grea's tail and in the final episode she's smelling that like those pervs smelling on panties and IT'S SO AWKWARD. This threw me off so much, I think I only got through because the show was very short and I know the suffering would be very low, otherwise I would definitely have dropped it right on episode 2.
Tumblr media
Skull-face Bookseller Honda-san
Honda-san was that show that I had always seen people commenting on and was very interested in watching since the beginning, but I never did because I'm lazy, so when I decided to do this I knew I had to put the show on the list and finally watch it, and that's a decision I definitely don't regret making.
Tumblr media
Honestly, this show is so good. It's not that comedy that will let you laughing your pants off, but it doesn't mean that it ain't funny. It's mentioned in the show that the manga that originated from this anime was written by Honda-san himself about his experiences working on a bookstore, I don't know how truthful the stories are, but is this sense of "damn this really happens irl" that makes everything way much funnier and it is a true joy to watch. The anime isn't ambitious, I don't think it's trying to convey a message or make a commentary or anything, but this doesn't come as a detriment for the show, this anime didn't need any of that and they don't try to make it be about something big. It's just a wholesome show about life that is really comforting, especially if you're an adult that already had some experience with retailing.
What else do I have to say? I love the style, I love the soundtrack, I love the weird situation that happens, and the characters are just amazing, aside of Honda-san I love manager Armor she's lots of fun, and Chief Pestmask (who's VA is, look at that, Hikasa Yoko once again) who doesn't appear a lot, but when she comes she sure leaves an impression on you. This show did crush my fantasies of working on a bookstore someday, but I loved every second of it anyway. XD

Hey, Your Cat Ears Are Showing! Season 2
So when I heard Hora Mimi was getting a second season, I was both excited and apprehensive. This one of the rare short shows that have an episodic narrative but that has an overall plot to the whole thing, and I was quite satisfied with the ending of season 1, it was sweet and heartwarming as the rest of the series was and I really didn't think a second season was needed, thus I really didn't watch it while it was airing. But this was the perfect opportunity for me to finally watch it.
And this season was a very good surprise, it expanded on what the first season had built and it became three times gayer by giving Dong Dong and Jin Zhu partners, Jin Zhu partner being an Ear People but from another species, which made this season even more fun and cute. The final arc of this season where they established that Da Shu and Miao had met each other before the events of season 1 is probably the only thing I don't like about this sequel because on my eyes it looks silly, but I wouldn't call it a negative that renders the show. Hora Mimi remains a very adorable, heartwarming show that everyone definitely should check it out.
Tumblr media
The Girl From the Other Side
Totsukuni no Shoujo was never on my radar for mangas so I wasn't aware of its existence. A few months back I saw someone reblogging gifs from this OVA on my dash and I got really intrigued by it, the aesthetic was kinda similar to Ancient Magus Bridge but it was darker and it had this antique style to it that made me fall in love instantly.
Tumblr media
Since I don't know the manga, I'm not familiar with the characters and their stories, but even though I was in the dark I could grasp the concept without major difficulties because the characters are very expressive, and the music is very well used on passing to was what is going on with those characters. I thought an anime with no dialogue would be boring, but this OVA was very captivating, not just by its visuals but also by the narrative and the music that got me hooked from beginning to end. I feel like this is a very shallow review of the thing, but I don't think I'm smart enough to elaborate more on what to say about this show.
I'm not familiar with the manga and I don't know how things work there, neither I know if such style could hold up for an entire season, but I definitely wanna see more, and I'll definitely look up the manga if I can make my tablet work again someday.
Tumblr media
Zenonzard THE ANIMATION - Episode 0
And to wrap up we have Zenonzard, which was another show that I wasn't aware of until I decided to do this thing and it's only here because the poster looked cool, and it was officially available on youtube with subs and no region locks so I thought, "why not?"
This is probably the weirdest of the bunch since it's a show based on a card game, and I haven't watched one of these in ages, and it's weird, but I was kinda into it? Like, I don't like that most of the girls in this show have ginormous breasts and this thing of a female coming to an apparently normal boy saying "I choose you" seems that it's going to backfire and will create a huge mess in the future, but as the episode was progressing I was getting more and more into it?
Tumblr media
The plot doesn't seem as good, if they even have a plot. It does a crap job at explaining what this game is and how it works, and also the CG used for the monsters is horrendous. But it got me interested, it had some great music playing and I think this is what caught me the most, even though there's one song, that I believe is sung by Nanase who did voices for Aikatsu, that I feel like it was very misplaced. I also like the futuristic aesthetic, I'm a sucker for these things and I was pleased for the most part of it.
I don't know if this will become a thing, but if they actually release an anime and if they publish it on youtube like what they've done with this ONA/Special/Prequel? I may keep watching it. Which comes to as a surprise to me.
Tumblr media
And this was the first Round of Randoms (provisory name) of this blog. I quite enjoyed doing this thing, I think I'm gonna keep doing it to always have something different and new around here. What did you think of it? Have you watched any of these shows? What are your opinions about it? Is there any show you have to recommend? And what's a good name for this new thing I'm trying to do? Thank you so much for sticking with me until the end, and I'll see you guys at another time.

debating...how should I approach the season 12 reunion in lyric comic??
option a: canon
they just open the door and boom wth?? wash?? tucker??
saves song time and also is a good lead up to dramatic felix and carolina reveals but also BORING >:(!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
option b: dumbass
the door goes open and there’s the initial moment of surprise but then the serious vibe of the lyric comic gets a record scratch noise because wash is like :0 but TUCKER is like D:< and then he absolutely DECKS wash in the face and goes frECKLES SHAKE??????? WHAT KINDA!!!! BULLSHIT FUCIKING STUPID SAISIS and then they get into a slap fight
this is what it is currently in my storyboards and it’s fucking hilarious but also takes up a lot of song time
option c: emotional
absolutely not just an excuse to draw tucker showing emotion other than sarcastic or angry
the door goes open and there’s the shock and everyone’s a little scuffed up and wash lowers his gun like?? wth what are you guys doing here and im still going to have tucker smack wash but less funny and more depressing and then go in for the hug !!!!! and  he’s not really?? crying he just;;god he looks so different from the beginning of the comic and it --
this is a good option time is probably ok?? but the feel of it doesn’t quite go with the flow of events that come right after.
i might draw this anyway regardless of what goes in the lyric comic

I actually really appreciate this response! I’m gonna go in and make a counter argument because I still think a lot of what was said here is untrue, but you definitely don’t have to read it. Thank you for giving me some legitimate reasons :)
1. In episode 8, we actually get confirmation that Mike does believe El is dead. He says,
“That thing took her. Just like it took Bob.”
He draws a direct comparison between El and Bob right after Bob’s death. If he wanted to imply he still thought she was alive, he could’ve easily drawn a comparison to Will instead. Mike never stopped calling El, but it wasn’t because he thought she was alive. Maybe he did, at one point, but by the time she returns he does think she’s dead. The calling seems to be more out of survivor’s guilt than anything else. He tells Will that he kept seeing her, that he felt like he was going crazy. This implies he saw El on multiple occasions and heard her voice but he thought he was experiencing the same thing Will was, which is why he brings up going “crazy together.” At the time, both Mike and Will had been under the assumption that Will’s episodes were caused by PTSD, so we can assume that Mike may have thought he had it as well in the ways he would see and hear El.
Also, I think Mike looks a lot different when he’s not giving up on someone. Season 1 shows him having a hard-stop refusal to give up on searching for Will and he had 0 proof Will could be alive beyond what El kept telling him. Mike saw El, multiple times, but never went out looking for her. He would’ve found her in Hopper’s cabin at some point, but he only called.
That thing about El collapsing into Mike - that was actually unplanned while filming. Even though it did happen, Mike barely held her for ten seconds before moving her off him so they could go look out at Billy.
That thing about El calling out for Mike is 100% true! Can’t argue against that one.
2. For this one, I’d like to point out that Mike is doing something a lot of people dealing with grief do; talking to those they miss. People will visit graves or write in journals to communicate with their lost one, which is what Mike seems to be doing here. I disagree that Mike was telling her about having a bad day for comfort because he doesn’t ask for advice or tell her why he had a bad day, he just tells her what happened.
El does lean on Mike at the hospital for comfort, again, I can’t argue with that. I do think it’s important to note that we see her do the exact same thing with Hopper shortly after that. El does rely on Mike for some level of comfort, but based on that (and many other parallels) it seems that El is relying on him in the same way she relies on her father. Basically, though she relies on him for comfort, it doesn’t seem to be under a very romantic context.
The thing about El telling Mike about Max and Brenner is being picked out of the much larger situation in which El isn’t talking to him. I don’t see how she was seeking comfort from Mike by telling him that stuff and then completely avoiding him. It seems sort of like an explanation/excuse to get Mike to leave her alone rather than her going to him for comfort.
3. The SBP was cute as shit, hard agree on that. This is honestly the only moment in the show where I feel like Mike and El are actually having fun together. I fucking love that scene, it’s adorable, though it doesn’t give me any romantic vibes
I’m gonna try and not let my byler bias get in the way here, so I can concede that the snowball was kinda cute. It was definitely a sweet moment, though I think there’s a lot more underlying this scene than meets the eye for both Mike and El. I thought their reunion was cuter tbh
For the M&M scene, I find it kinda hard to see how the moment was cute simply because it only happened thanks to Lucas and Mike doesn’t really do anything other than give her M&M’s, try to spin his ‘species’ joke into a more positive light, and say he likes her clothes (though i do believe there is symbolic value there).
Other than these three moments, none of their other scenes when they’re dating are really all that cute because when you really pay attention to them, they usually reveal one or both of them not actually enjoying the moment (ex; the kissing scene in s3. mike wouldn’t let el touch him and she shut down his attempts at singing). They had a few moments in s1 I thought were adorable, but that was all before Mike kissed her.
4. This one is a bit more loaded, so I’m gonna break it down into sections
Ship Parallels
The only proper parallel that you mentioned regarding ships was the Jancy/Mileven parallel in s1.
I talked about this already, but Mileven wasn’t supposed to parallel Lumax. That was an accident during filming.
A very important thing that you’re missing in your point about the Snowball/movies/Enzo’s parallels is that Mike had a moral obligation to take El to the Snowball that isn’t present in those other relationships.
In 2x01, we learn about Mike’s three basic moral pillars, which he teaches to El. One of those is that “A promise is something you can never break.” Mike and El didn’t just agree to go to the Snowball like Jopper and Lumax did. Mike promised her that he would take her. In Mike’s eyes, taking her to the Snowball wasn’t a choice because of the promise he made her over a year ago. Even if he did actually want to take her, that doesn’t erase the fact that he had set himself up to not really have a choice without going against his own moral compass. Finn once described them as “a married couple without the option of divorce,” which rings true in this scene.
Even though those scenes are parallels, there is a huge difference between Jopper and Lumax vs Mileven, and that’s the fact that Jopper and Lumax started out as friends before they started dating. Mike and El were never really friends, except maybe towards the end of s1 which was only a few days.
A ship Mileven often parallels is Stancy, but that’s an entire other can of worms and I don’t wanna make this too long lol
Paralleling Itself
The parallel you mentioned about Mike bringing Eggos to El in s1 and s4 isn’t really very supportive of Mileven. Mike giving Eggos to El was a very familial thing (he was feeding her, housing her, and teaching her about the world), which means this parallel is also showing that their relationship still hasn’t moved past that point in time, in Mike’s eyes. Mike hasn’t progressed in their relationship like El has.
I agree with the emotional reuniting in s2 and s4! I just don’t think there was any romantic undertones in either of those scenes. In s2, he hugs El and has a short conversation before getting angry with Hopper about hiding her the whole time while he thought she was dead. In s4, they have a sweet reunion and they touch foreheads before Mike sends her off to Will.
The thing is, both of those scenes are also direct parallels to Hopper and El’s reunion. El tells Hopper that she never stopped believing he was out there just like Mike tells El he never gave up on her (which we know actually isn’t true). El and Mike touching foreheads is also the exact thing El and Hopper do upon reuniting. So, the implication of those two scenes between Mike and El are ultimately more familial than anything else.
Now, for both of Mike’s attempted love confessions (assuming you mean the grocery store and SBP) I’d ask you to really consider the words Mike is using. Where were they used before Mike uses them? Who says them?
In the grocery store, Mike tries to tell El that love makes you crazy. If you know anything about Mike and Will’s relationship, you’ll know how important the word crazy is to both of them because of their conversation in 2x02. He’s trying to say he loves her, but he uses the word crazy and El doesn’t get it.
During the monologue, Mike mentions that he was scared of telling her he loves her because it would hurt more if he lost her. That is almost exactly what Will said El was feeling in the painting reveal scene. His entire explanation for not being able to tell El he loves her is him reusing Will’s words (not that he knows they were actually Will’s).
5. I have a lot of problems with the monologue, but the big 2 are the facts that Mike is being paralleled to Brenner and that Mike lies.
Mike is being compared to Brenner, but he is being shown as a version of him who believes in El and admires her rather than someone who wants to use her. Those parallels aren’t to show that Mike is a bad person or that he wants to use her, but rather that he holds the same fixation on her powers that Brenner had which is something El wants to break free from. She doesn’t want to have her powers be admired or seen as special. She wants to be seen as normal.
Mike hadn’t used El for her powers since s1, and I think you might misunderstand our argument about Mike and his relationship with El’s powers. It’s not that we think he wants to use them, it’s that her powers are consistently shown to be Mike actually understands about El and likes. That’s not meant to be slander against Mike, because he always puts great value on the unique qualities of all the people he cares about, but it does show that the way Mike loves El isn’t enough. He doesn’t have much else to say about her besides her powers. He doesn’t have any real happy moments to fall back on and he isn’t able to talk about any of her qualities as a person because he doesn’t really know her. She’s been lying to him for six months. Before that, they spent all their time making out. He admires her special qualities that she doesn’t want to be admired for because he doesn’t really know much else about her. That’s why the “you’re my superhero” line isn’t actually a very good line for them. El doesn’t want to be a superhero, she doesn’t want to be a monster, she just wants to be herself. Mike sees her as something she doesn’t want to be seen as.
Clarifying this real quick; Mike mentions 1 memory to El. The day they met. What he says about his life starting when he met El in the woods is fucked up but, again, let’s think about the situation. Mike is trying to save someone he cares about from dying and the only weapon he has are his words. Mike is also using outside sources to build his confession to El. What Mike says about his life starting when he met El is fucked up for a lot of reasons, but from Mike’s perspective? Using the memory of when they first met is what saved Will. Even in the one memory he uses to try and save El, he’s making a callback to it because it was the memory that worked last time. He doesn’t mention the Snowball or their time in Hopper’s cabin or even their good memories in s1. He goes back to when they first met because, to Mike, that’s the only memory of them he thinks will save her because it’s worked before.
6. Mike being scared of losing El after saying “I love you” doesn’t make any sense, in my opinion. He lost El because he didn’t say “I love you.” El was begging him to say it before she got arrested. If you really love someone romantically, why would you sit there and not say the one thing that would make that person feel better? Especially if it were true?
Also, Mike doesn’t have trouble making heavy declarations. He’s able to have deep, heavy conversations with Will just fine. He’s able to communicate how he feels to El in s1. Being a socially awkward nerd isn’t what’s preventing him from saying “I love you.” Lying is his problem.
I think that’s something we agree on: Mike is a shit liar. Mike is lying when he tells El he loves her and she’s very aware of that fact.
Tumblr media
This is her reaction to Mike’s first “I love you.” She doesn’t look happy or relieved or surprised, even. She’s wincing, she’s in pain. Yes, she’s being choked by vines, but this is her reaction specifically to Mike saying “I love you.”
A little fun film fact; lightning is often used to show when a character is lying in cinematography. Right after Mike says “I love you,” thunder and lightning hit to show that not only is it a lie, but it’s an impactful one. An important lie.
Again, thanks for giving some actual reasoning!! I don’t see many milevens who actually try and break down their reasoning like this, so it was nice to see another perspective :)
milkvans tell me what’s actually appealing about mike and el’s love story beyond them being “canon and in love” without saying something factually incorrect about the show challenge (impossible mode)

Leafs @ Sharks - Game 12 - Oct.30.17
KEY NARRATIVES
Toronto Maple Leafs (7-4-0) vs San Jose Sharks (5-5-0)
The biggest story going into tonight is Patrick Marleau's return to San Jose. As mentioned in the first preview, Patty spent his entire career up to this season in San Jose. The Center/Winger was drafted second overall by a young Sharks team in 1997, picked just after Joe Thornton who would end up traded to and sharing most of Marleau's time and success in San Jose.
While Marleau's track record would earn him anything from reverence to devotion on any team, the fact that the Sharks had only existed for six years before they drafted Patty means he's a genuine cornerstone of the team's history. He holds the franchise records for Games Played, Goals, Points, Powerplay Goals, Shorthanded Goals, Shots, as well as a number of other more granular records. While Joe Thornton is still with the team, at 38 himself, it seems unlikely that anyone will be overtaking Marleau anytime soon.
Tonight is also the first game in the often dreaded California Road Trip. The way schedules break down for most Eastern teams results in one home and one away game against each Western Conference team. To reduce travel, the games against the three California teams are usually scheduled consecutively and in a short timeframe. For the Leafs that means the following lineup this year:
Monday - Sharks Wednesday - Ducks Thursday - Kings
They also have a game on Saint Louis' home ice on Saturday which will bring them to four games in six days. It's a brutal schedule against teams that aren't easy to beat on a good day, let alone on their own turf while you're traveling. It's also particularly scary considering the Leafs have lost three of their last four games. It would be nice if these kids could have gathered up a couple cushion points on that three-game homestand they just completed, but hey sometimes you just wanna play on expert mode.
Don't screw it up.
In more frightening news, in spite of Josh Leivo's fairly brilliant performance on Saturday, which had him coming away with an assist and great underlying numbers, it appears that Babcock is planning on icing the same lineup he used at the beginning of the season. JvR and Matt Martin are both back in the lineup, Brown is back down on the fourth line, and Marner us up next to Bozak and JvR again. While there's no excuse not to play JvR if he's healthy, putting Matt Martin back after Leivo's showing sends a  conflicting message from a coach that keeps claiming "hard work is what gets you in the line-up" and yet not rewarding Leivo, who not just works hard but usually produces in every game he plays as a fill in.
If anything, Bozak is actually on the thinnest ice, though slightly more protected than the wingers due to the Leafs' comparatively smaller depth at center. Yet, we did see him bounced down to the fourth line and Marleau moved to center towards the end of the train-wreck against the Flyers. Even though the lines aren't reflecting it in this game, it will be interesting to see how the lineup looks throughout the week, with back-to-backs and travel giving all the more incentive to sit a player or two to keep the team fresh.
On a much more fun note, one thing a game against San Jose always delivers is the glorious play and beards of Joe Thornton and Brent Burns. Joe Thornton is, as mentioned above, the longtime former team and linemate of Patrick Marleau. His claim to fame, besides the beard, is a unique and deadly playmaking ability, which can be seen in his high Assist to Goal ratio, and the high goal totals of his lucky linemates.
On the other side of the ice, Brent Burns is one of the best offensive defensemen in the league, and last year's Norris Winner (best defenseman award). His forward-like ability to score makes him hard to judge as a pure defenseman, extremely fun to watch, and a slam dunk on your fantasy team.
While I will give you their numbers for identification, it's not particularly necessary. You can pick them out using the following aesthetic markers:
Thornton: Dead-eyed, Grey-bearded Man of the Sea Brent Burns: Toothless, Wild Pirate Captain
I’m just saying you wouldn’t be shocked to see either of them wielding cutlasses on the high seas.

You're welcome... or I'm sorry... I'm not really sure but it's your problem now.

THE HIGHLIGHTS
youtube
THE POST GAME
Score: L 3-2
To begin, I was under two false assumptions going into this game. The first was that the time of the Sharks had ended and the age of their core and the loss of Marleau had transformed them into a wounded buffalo primed for the taking. This was completely false. Watching them play was shocking, and looking at their numbers after the game was even more so. That's a damn solid team.
My other false assumption was that the Maple Leafs were good at playing hockey.
Something's critically wrong here. While Matthews, Nylander, and Co. performed to their usual dazzling standard, watching them try to carry the rest of this team was like watching a pony try and carry a 500lb man. The fourth line was such a trainwreck that together they ended the game with a Corsi For percentage of zero. ZERO! Over three periods they took no shots while allowing the Sharks to fire sixteen at Freddie. They also took at least two penalties while drawing none.
Tyler Bozak, who's been having a rough go of it all season, was so bad in this game that Babcock benched him at the end of the third, pulling Marleau from Kadri's wing to have him center for JvR and Marner (which, side note: as much as they haven't wanted to play Marleau off the wing, I didn't hate him as center on the offensive second/third line). He moved Brown up to fill Marleau's spot and then only rolled three lines for about the last ten minutes of the game, resulting in the following top nine:
Hyman - Matthews - Nylander JvR - Marleau - Marner Komarov - Kadri - Brown
At first, you want to be mad at the players for underperforming as they have been. Except, ignoring the natural shutdown of a team’s offense when they have the lead in the final minutes, the Leafs dominated on those new lines the end of that game. If not for the empty netter, they would have tied this game up (not that they deserved to, but for the grace of Frederik Andersen, who had perhaps his best game of the season). The Matthews line, which was untouched, looked amazing. The Kadri line was on the ice for the would-have-been-tying goal. I thought Marner looked better than he has a lot of the season next to Marleau, and JvR almost tipped one in. They all looked dangerous, something the Leafs haven't looked consistently since the first few games of the season.
So if it's not most of the skater's fault, who's is it?
While I won't begin to even touch the idea that Babcock isn't a great coach, he's making some terrible decisions right now. There's a weird vibe in the room and on the ice, perhaps, but the biggest issue was that there were players in the lineup that are clear weak links that lead to a completely broken chain.
Matt Martin plays less than eight minutes a night. He’s not good enough for either powerplay time nor penalty kill minutes. You know who can play on the powerplay? Josh Leivo.
Kasperi Kapanen can play both.
Yet they're both sitting in the press box night after night.
It's the same story on the blueline. Roman Polak has been a predictable disaster in the games he’s played, and the Sharks, like their namesake, smelled blood in the water and targeted him all night. He had the worst Corsi of any defenseman on the team (CF% 39.29) and currently has the 18th worst possession numbers in the entire league among defenseman who have played more than 50 minutes. Whether you're going by numbers or an eye test, that's not a player who's doing so well you can justify sitting Connor Carrick, who's much younger and fast enough to keep up with the rest of the team.
The point is that something has to change. The attitude displayed in the last few games needs to shift, but the biggest weakness on this team right now isn't youth, it isn't the defense, it's the roster decisions. What they're doing isn't working, and I believe the tide will at least temporarily turn on Babcock if changes aren't made to the lineup in the game against the Ducks on Wednesday. Considering it's the first night of a back to back, there's even less excuse not to weave at least Carrick and Leivo or Kapanen into the lineup, just to keep the rest of the team fresh. Ideally, I'd like to see them try out the lines they threw together at the end of the third period for a whole game, and ice the following fourth line:
Kapanen - Bozak - Leivo
Doubtful, but a girl can hope. At this point, if the same lineup is put out against the Ducks, the team approaches the quotable definition of insanity:
"Insanity is trying the same thing over and over and expecting a different result."
And it's time we get a different result.

Leafs @ Sharks - Game 12 - 10.30.17

Note
rubs m little gremlin hands together So the idea is your run of the mill puzzle owner swap, but with an important key: it’s jaden yuki of gx, and he’s about the same age he would have actually been in dm. (by my estimation, maybe 9? i forget where i got that number) the basic setup is that in this au yugi and jaden are cousins, so when jaden gets hit with the dreaded Parents Are Never Around disease that seems to be plaguing the world of yugioh, he goes to live with yugi and his grandpa. young kid or not, yugi’s excited to have someone to hang around with and shows him the puzzle, and after hearing that he’s been working on it for 8 years with no real luck, jaden fills with hubris and asks if he can try. and of course you gotta humor the kid, right? his hubris is awarded, and the puzzle is completed.  this of course kickstarts the story as usual with the difference of who exactly gets overtaken by the pharaoh and how that dynamic works. seeing as yugi seems to get taller whenever he’s taken over, i went with the funnier route of making jaden’s body genuinely age up when yami takes over. this does mean that they can’t really pretend to be the same person(or be particularly confused on that front), so they come up with the dumb excuse that this is his older cousin, Judai. noooo it’s not weird that they look exactly the same and seem to have the same fashion sense, what are you talking about? stop being Silly. i did decide early on that while i’m mostly sticking with DM’s story i’m definitely not skipping the vibe of season 0. because frankly, given haou and yubel(who i will work into this once i’ve gotten that far in gx), it’s just more fitting to make good on the horror aspects. but besides that, having a host so tiny and genuinely helpless is bound to make the pharaoh damn protective. as though he wasn’t already... a few dynamics i’ve decided on 1. Ishizu is very fucking concerned. not only is the pharaoh in a body he was not destined for, but the one he was supposed to end up in is RIGHT FREAKIN HERE and the one he ended up in is a DEFENSELESS CHILD. she takes a more active roll in the cast, feeling that she needs to protect this kid while her brother is out there. she’s also lowkey projecting on jaden as a second chance at being a good big sister to marik but i don’t think she’s realized that’s what she’s doing yet. 2. being as obsessed as he is, marik could not give less of a shit how small the host is. frankly, that just makes him more convinced that the pharoah must be gotten rid of. honestly, hiding behind a defenseless child. such cheap tricks will not work on him! this would later evolve into yami marik being happy to kill him and regular marik being fairly sickened with himself for going so far over the edge. 3. yami bakura usually doesn’t care because he’s an evil dickwad, but because jaden can see duel spirits, sometimes the dynamic is.... odd. he’s more likely to go after yugi as a sort of lois lane than directly target jaden, but he’s not above doing that, either. 4. they could literally transform right infront of seto and he wouldn’t believe anything spooky was going on. he just wants a reasonable, non-magical explanation for why it’s so hard to find anything about this judai person or why he has to talk to jaden any time he wants to challenge him. seriously, imagine if you had to talk to mokuba every single time you wanted anything to do with seto. ridiculous. 5. Pegasus is aware of their little ruse from the beginning, but isn’t it so much more fun to let everyone else be confused?  6. i’m sure i’ll have thoughts about noah at some point but right now all i’ve got is that he won’t be aware that there’s ANOTHER kid in here besides him and mokuba until everyone’s already trapped. i have some drawings for this au if you wanna see em, tumblr’s just being goofy right now (i had to retype this whole explain...). but yeah! that’s the tiny jaden au in summation. i also figure he’s still gonna end up going to duel academy by the time gx is supposed to come around which i’m sure shakes up some things, but i’m focused on small boy.
not sure if you're still into yugioh but did i ever tell you about my Tiny Jaden Au?
Tell me of this (also yes I am I can't get out)
