my adventures in trying to make a (one) simple gif today
so i’ve been doing some animation recently and i use flipnote studio on my ds for it bc it’s easy (i could never be a traditional animator bc i rely so heavily on being able to flip through frames and watch the whole animation so far as i work) but yeah so i’ve been doing a lot of that recently, and i finally finished something that i felt like i’d want to post here? well on my art blog but this site in general, finally something i felt was worth posting, right
the thing is uh. well ok you can export flipnote files as gifs, which is what i wanted to do, and it should have worked fine except it didn’t uhh. so when you export it as a gif it’s saved to the sd card in a specific folder (which you can’t change), and then you plug the card into your computer and find the folder on there, easy peasy. except whenever i tried to open that folder my entire laptop crashed, literally blue screened, which has never happened to this computer as far as i remember. i tried it three times & it crashed every time, and since i can’t change which folder the gif file goes into, that method is a complete bust
so what else can i do? well you can also export it as a video file (.avi to be exact), but the image quality isn’t great, and image quality is important because in flipnote you draw in pixels, so it’s instantly obvious if it’s not a crystal clear image. the only other option is to save individual frames as jpegs, which doesn’t provide a clear image either, but it’s better than the video format, so i. went and saved all 62 individual frames of this animation as jpegs (which isn’t too bad, considering i’ve had animations go over 120 frames before, and i’m generally  pretty patient when it comes to mundane repetitive tasks like this, so)
so alright ok cool so i’ve got the frames, now i just have to put them together and make them into a gif right. easy. except not easy because ok. first i have to deal with the jpeg image quality bc like i said it’s immediately noticeable if it’s not a clear image. so i took all the frames into my shitty version of photoshop (elements, not even a full version) and messed w/ the brightness/contrast until it all looked good. for 62 individual frames, i did all that. then i realized since i’d be posting it online i wanted my blog url on it, so i wrote it out in pixels, since the whole animation is pixel-based, and put it in the bottom corner of the gif. the thing is, though, ps is not a video editing program, it works in separate layers like, an art program, so you can’t just overlay something once over all of it as a whole. so i had to go and paste the url onto every individual frame (62 of them, remember), but even THEN when you copy+paste smth in ps it doesn’t put the copy on top of the original thing you copied from, it puts it right smack dab in the middle of the canvas, and on TOP of that it doesn’t paste to the actual layer you hit paste on, it creates a new layer on top of that just for this dinky little thing you’re pasting, and if you want it to go onto your target layer you have to merge the two layers together after the fact
so i had to paste the url 62 times, and then move it to exactly the right spot so it wouldn’t move around while the gif played (62 times), and then merge the layers down 62 times so that i was back down to 62 layers instead of 124 layers (that, if converted to a gif, would rapidly alternate between the animation and this shitty little url in the corner at 12 fps, which, i’ll just save u some imagination, would not be pleasant)
ok so after i finally got all THAT finished (which took a pretty good chunk of an hour, btw) i tried exporting it as a gif, but since my version of ps is shitty it doesn’t actually have an animation feature, you have to click “save for web” and make it a looping gif in a weird menu there, but it’s pretty limiting on file size and also you can’t pick the frame rate? i have the original on my ds playing at about 12 fps but the way you pick the speed on this menu is “delay between frames” and the fastest you can go is 0 seconds, which sounds good but you don’t get to pick how long each frame is held for, so even at its fastest speed the gif was still way too slow
so instead i took it into my version of clip studio paint, which is pro, not ex, which is really important because in ex you can animate using an unlimited number of frames per project but in the pro version you only get a measly 24 frames per project (2 seconds of animation at 12 fps, 1 second at 24 fps), which is not nearly enough to accommodate my 62 frames. but i thought i’d give it a try anyway bc hey, maybe i could figure something out? ? (spoiler i couldn’t. i couldn’t figure it out.)
it took me a bit to actually get a handle on how csp’s animation function even worked, so that’s points off for making me poke around a bit and waste even more time, but it was fairly easy to manage after looking up a quick tut online so it’s ok
but it’s kind of not bc ok reminder, 62 frames of this damn ass thing (at this point my emotions are breaking into “damn ass” territory) and i can’t figure out how to import all of my frames into the timeline at once? there’s a function called “specify cel” which is how u tell it which layers you want to be frames in the animation, and there’s another function called “batch specify cel” which u would think means u can specify a bunch of cels at the same time, but i couldn’t figure out how to make it work and i was getting too tired to wrangle gongle into telling me anything i wanted to hear so i just gave up and, u guessed it, specified every single one of my 62 cels individually across three timeline folders, which could each only carry 24 frames
so uhh, cool, i have finally transferred my animation from the animation program on my ds to an “animation program” on my laptop. what now. well, not much, sadly
the worst part about the csp method not working is that it worked beautifully at 24 frames per animation. as soon as i plugged those cels in it played like a charm, at the right frame rate and everything, it looked so good! but i couldn’t combine them all into one animation, so i ended up exporting three separate 2-second gifs like “hmm maybe theres a way to combine these outside of a dumbass program” (me, a fool, thinking that) and after about 5 minutes on gongle decided it was impossible and. gave up. that’s that
anyway, for what it’s worth, here’s the 4 gifs i managed to make today, the first one is the dumb ps one, a complete gif but played too slow, and the other three are the dumb csp ones, played at the correct speed but all chopped up into pieces

On March 20, 2020 my soap making channel hit 8K subs. Then I came up with an idea to create a letter for my future self. To celebrate together with her. I wonder how long would it take to hit 10K from 8K? I’ll patiently wait. I’ll keep this video unlisted and will only publish when I reach 10K milestone. Stats to date, I have 124 videos now and I wonder on how many videos will this channel have by then? Will I be still working overseas? I pray that by then, cure for Covid-19 is available. To my future self, Remember to publish this video when we reach 10,000 subscribers. Remember to answer my questions and update the description box with your answers. Remember to thank our soap sisters and bubble brothers, we owe everything to them! I know that in the future, you will continue to chase our dreams, in doing so always take a moment to look back. Share your blessings to your family, friends, to everyone and lift everything back to God almighty. I love you so much, Cathy #clumsysoaper Dearest Past Self, We made it! 10000 soap sisters & bubble brothers in our mini soap making family. We now have 139 videos. Today is 14 Aug 2020, it took almost 5 months from the day you decided to make a time capsule for me. No cure for Covid-19 yet but Scientists are doing all they can to find a vaccine. Yes, I am still working overseas. Working from home, (a few days after you made the time capsule video), though I sometimes go to office to do some lab work. I really can't believe that we can reach this far. I owe everything to our Soapmaking family. I owe it to you also for doing all the hard work and preparing the way from me. Btw, I am working on something big. Something that you've dreamed about when we are still a little girl. Don't worry, I won't share yet until it is ready. Before I end this message, I would like to dedicate all our hard work to our loving Mama, to our Papa in heaven, to our younger brother, his wife and our nephews! I lift everything back to God, for without Him. I am nothing. To God be the glory. Love, Your Present Self, who used to be your Future Self. ☺️🥰💕 P.S.
