Resources for animal artists

As an animal artist I am always trying to find good resources that I can use in aiding my artworks or for studying animals and animal anatomy. Here are a few that I have found that have been really helpful and wanted to share some for any other artists that may need more resources to learn from. I also try to look for resources that do not include AI generated images as it can be difficult to find regular photos in-between all the new AI spam on Google images.

iNaturalist - This is a website in which users can upload pictures of animals and have them identified by other users for identification purposes. There are a large amount of photos for various species of animals and some included videos. I recommend starting with explore and hitting the species tab to get a list of different species that you can start referencing from. Love this site for bug references!

ArtProf- ArtProf is a website created by Clara Lieu, who was a professor at the Rhode Island School of Design. This website focuses on teaching art online for free and is a great resource for artist who are beginning or for educational materials. Seriously recommend checking them out and they also have thousands of image resources that you can use as well as a YouTube channel. Definitely recommend them! National Museum of Wildlife Art- This is the website for the National Museum of Wildlife Art, which is a museum in Teton County, Wyoming. This museum features a collection of thousands of animal artworks created by various artist from around the world. This website is really nice to use when wanting to study other artists animal artwork from past eras and recent ones.

Biodiversity Heritage Library- The Biodiversity Heritage Library is a digital library that provides information on biodiversity and resources for old literature and artworks that have been collected from different eras such as from the 17-18 hundreds. They also provide a collection of hundred of thousands of old illustrations of different species and old scientific illustrations of animals.

I hope these resources help any artists who are looking for resources to use in learning more about animal art. I also recommend going to museums and zoos, as they can be great resources to learn from, especially zoos as you can do live drawings of the animals, which helps with observation skills. Of course if it is not possible for you to go to these places in person, I hope these resources help you and many more that can be found online.

So we know the Wilderness is that of a Spirit, and Spirits have those they love, whether familiars or fellow Spirits, right? Well imagine this.

So User is a spirit, beloved of the Wilderness, both the Spirit, and the wilderness as a whole. However she has a physical formation, taking care of the cabin and the wildlife for her wife.

When the man in the cabin first arrived she hid, yet the Wilderness soon drove him mad, to suicide. So it was User’s responsibility to care for the cabin, which was ultimately their home now that the man was dead. A burial took place, and plants grew where his corpse was placed.

Then there was peace for a while, until the plane crash occurred. User had the option of disappearing or staying to help the victims. Her choice was to stay.

When the Yellowjackets saw that light when they were at the lake that led them to discover the cabin, that was User, spirit magic and all that. She was leading them into her home, but they didn’t make for good guests per say.

The Yellowjackets do not truly like User much as they find the woman odd. They find it odd how animals flock to her, how easily she navigates the life, how she seemingly protects and provides for them.

When Laura Lee climbed into that plane, User pleaded to her wife to let the girl live, and whilst that plane exploded, Laura Lee miraculously managed to live. She suffered burns and such but she survived.

When Lottie starts to lose herself, User was a constant comfort for the girl, how she seemingly felt like she was on her medication when she was out.

And so now it is Doomcoming, whilst all of them are outside, enjoying the event, User remains inside, in the attic, talking to her Wife, who was in her form that could be seen by the human eyes. And then Jackie and Travis sneak up to the attic, but stop, seeing the pair. Then the drama starts,

What im getting from this is that:

The user originally lived in the cabin with her wife who let's say she eloped with at a young age and ran away from society with to avoid hate and violence.

So... let us say that users wife died, and became what we now know as the Wilderness as a spirit. User left alive continues to be a good wife and care for her spirit wife by taking care of the cabin and caring for the wildlife.

When Cabin guy comes and user has to leave the cabin so she doesn't get hurt because a random man coming into your home isn't exactly a safe situation, let's say Wilderness wife is *not* happy, and like you said, he becomes teeth in the dirt where flowers, fruits, and vegetables sprout in his dead wake after Wilderness wifey makes him kill himself. Dare we say possessive Wilderness Wifey.

Now that cabin guy is dead, User could move back into her lovely cabin. But let's just say she fell ill and succumbed to the dirt as well, becoming a spirit alongside her Wilderness wifey.

But once again when the Yellowjackets come, not so good guests, and Wilderness wifey doesn't like that so she starts "playing" with them. But, low and behold, user has some away over her wife, so when the plane explodes, Laura Lee doesn't die, but survives, albeit with burns.

i want to say that: what if user as a spirit, takes on a physical form of a girl on their team (who never existed, but using spirit magic, she can put it into their heads that that player did) effectively blending in and being able to watch the girls as something more than a spirit.

So user is the one to deal with Laura's burns.

When Lottie runs out of her medication, she doesn't fall into delusion. Which is odd. And she finds comfort in a teammate she doesn't remember having.

Doomcoming, instead of *everything* that happens, they just get a bit high and some of the girls make out is all. Nothing rapey or fucked up. Afterall this story is a much more pleasant one where they have the protection of an all nice spirit.

Travis and Jackie go up into that attic and find user, who in this form still looks like their teammate, making out nasty with a seven foot tall woman (let's say she looks like the antler queen with the veils and antlers) who looks strangely ethereal.

And its like, who TF is this woman that their teammate is making out with??

Travis and Jackie get so spooked and embarrassed at the sight they don't end up hooking up, and the next morning when they all wake up with hangovers after Jackie highly ranted about what she saw— user starts getting questions (Wifey has dissipated from her physical form and user can feel a rabbit watching her cheekily).

And that'd be the lead up to the bot I think

My SWtOR Secret Santa gift for @ishallobservethis! I had to do something with Felin soon as I saw she had a "tripped and fell in love by accident" arc with Koth. I love the Smuggler, I love accidentally falling in love pairings, and Koth always need more love. So I wrote them a little scene between chapters 7 & 8 of KotFE.

Despite her best efforts in the moment, Felin had never been all that good at subtlety. So it wasn't really a surprise when Koth caught one too many of her 'surreptitious' glances in his direction.

It was enough to prompt him to look up from his half-disassembled rifle, arching a brow at her. "Need something , Outlander?"

"No, um, I just... the stuff with the Heralds was... a lot." Felin set down the tools she'd been using to repair her own blaster. "Wanted to be sure everyone's okay after that, you know?"

"And I'm first on your list?" A wink. "I'm flattered. And fine. The rifle took damage, not me." He shrugged. "Not the first time I've been in a fight like that, anyhow."

Former military. Right. On the run for deserting because he had a conscience. He was used to danger, used to Zakuul and Asylum and didn't need her fretting over him. But I want to.

She didn't want to dwell on why that was. She cared about all her comrades in arms, that's why.

"Good," she said, clearing her throat. She picked up the tools and went back to work. There was just a little carbon scoring to clear away, but better to have it in working order now, under the circumstances. "I gotta ask, Koth," she started after a few minutes' companionable silence working side by side, "especially after that mess, what exactly did Lana tell you that had you all gung-ho to bust me out?"

"Bunch of stuff," Koth laughed, turning back to reassembling his rifle. "Findin' the lost riches of a crime lord, taking down some bigshot admiral--not to mention a near-mythic Sith. Or was he a Jedi?" He shrugged, brow furrowed as he slotted the casing back together. "Point is, she spun you up as this dashing hero who thrives on long odds."

Felin chuckled. "Somethin' like that. And what, your curiosity got the best of you?"

"Somethin' like that," Koth said, shooting her a grin. "Gonna take someone experienced with long odds and pulling down powerful Force users to deal with Arcann and Vaylin. Wanted to see if you were the real deal. She didn't mention you have a great smile, though."

She smirked down at the blaster. They'd traded flirty banter a couple times in the swamps; if he wanted to go again she was happy to play. "Can't imagine how that slipped her mind, it's one of my best features."

"Guess she was distracted by the skytroopers and Knights and wildlife chasing us," he deadpanned.

"I do bring a flare of adventure to the lives of most people I meet," Felin joked, biting back the odd little squirm that didn't want to see him hurt in the course of this adventure.

"Only most?" Koth asked, half-joking, as he secured the last pieces back in place.

"Some are too boring to be helped," she said with exaggerated drama, biting the tip of her tongue. as she finished and holstered her blaster. "Not you, though," she winked.

"Well, that's a relief," Koth said with a laugh. "Think I'd be a little intimidated if you found my life experience boring."

"You mean running from a galaxy spanning empire with a price on your head isn't normal for you, Vortena?" Felin said with faux-shock.

"Right now it is."

"Touché."

The hum of the engines shifted, rocking the shuttle just a little. The computer beeped, and Koth wiped his hands on his jacket as he leaned over to check it.

"We're dropping out of hyperspace," he reported. "Almost there. I should check on the Gravestone repairs when we land. If we're gonna use it to save the galaxy."

"Yeah, be bad for that hope--and the engines--to go up in flames when you try to take off," Felin said dryly. "Would hate for our dashing heroics to end before I have a chance to really see what y- the ship can do."

Koth chuckled, sent her a smirk. "Have a little faith, Outlander. Let me show off her moves." His expression sobered as a view of Asylum flashed outside the shuttle. "Be careful down there, huh?"

She nodded as they headed to strap in for landing. "Do my best."

The flicker of relief in his eyes made her heart skip a beat. Or two. Maybe she wasn't the only one worried.

Maybe she liked that thought a bit more than she should.

Physical Abilities: I have quite amazing dexterity and flexibility I'd say. Sure, I might not be the strongest of them all, but I've kicked plenty of ass. Is that how you say it?

I'm usually practicing kickboxing and a little Taekwondo, so I'm not physically unfit either.

Weapons: I mostly use magic to fight and summon weapons! Like firearms, crossbows, spears and so on so forth. If we do hypothetically get so upset at one another that it evolves into a fight, I mainly use a staff made of vines and thorns.

WIP’S:

She’s a Genshin insert i made, I’m not sure what to do with her now that I don’t play the game much🙁 I named her Mari (ik, so original...!) and I designed her character to be about light and life. Her character corresponds with the next character, who im going to Name Ezra for the sake of not confusing anyone.

She’s a hydro polearm user, and is usually found in Sumeru and Liyue. She frequents any gardens or botanical areas found by Ezra, and is usually baking or doing other domestic things for her friends. Def the type to make her fighting really graceful tbh..She’s the more friendly one of the two, and is seen more frequently in public compared to the other.

Another genshin oc (😭😭). I made it that he was a sort of god or spirit of death. As l said before, his name is Ezra. I wanted him and Mari to appear as polar opposites, but actually be really close. Almost sort of a yin yang type of thing. He's more of a shut in, and can be found looking after the plants & wildlife for Mari while she is gone.

I Imagined he would be an electro swords user, but I never actually got into his character as much as I'd like to. As said before, Mari likes to bake) & is found baking for her friend frequently. His favorite dish of hers is the flan, and in return for making him food, he looks out for the animals & special plants she is especially fond of. He's never seen by the public, as some have said that seeing his true appearance drive even the purest souls mad (so edgy!!! & emo 😍!!)

Harveston Kelkkarotu/Sledathon and Finnish representation🇫🇮

Hello!

Now that i've finally played through the whole event, i want to talk about all the finnish inspirations and representation i've found in this event, and there is a lot of it!

I'm finnish (Finland swede to be exact) myself why would i else be making this hehe

This is the most proper finnish rep i've ever seen aside from Lotte and her home in little witch academia. And to also make something clear, Sami rep ≠ finnish rep and vice versa, to not intertwine these two.

And before we start, because swedish traditions have as well been mixed into this event, i will be color coding anytime i'm talking about something Finnish and something Swedish

Alright lets get to it!｡･:*:

First thing's first, the name for this event that they used in the JP server, Kelkkarotu, is made up of two actual finnish words, Kelkka (sleigh, sled) & Rotu (race)

All tho the word rotu is a word used more for breeding, like ex. A dog race, while kilpailu would've been more appropriate for a sled race. Either way i think this was a really neat addition and am sad that it wasn't carried over to the EN server :,)

Mount Moln

The game is correct that the word translates to cloud, but moln is actually swedish, the word for cloud in Finnish would've been pilvi.

Marja

The name Marja means berry! But it is as well a pretty normal finnish name that you could find someone have.

Kokko market

once again the translation is correct. Kokkon are usually seen around easter or midsummer, but can also been done off of those holidays.

It is also really common to find plenty of different home made sweets at the markets depending on what holiday or season is going on. As well as handmade wooden things, some more useful such as butter knives, spoons and cups, But also decorations or souvenirs.

I'm so happy they mentioned it as it was something i was NOT expecting.

within Finland (and a few other countries) we have a thing called jokamiehenoikeudet/allemansrätt/everyman's right. Which as Epel describes it you're free to roam public or private forests and nature, pick berries and mushrooms as well, but it all to be done respectfully of course. You are not to disturb the wildlife or nature by ex. being unnecessarily loud, breaking plants or trashing nature. i as well really love how Epel brought up when Grim wanted to go get some himself, that he was not gonna get squat from the villagers. Cus once berry and mushroom picking season is amongst us, it's on.

A user made a fantastic post Here listing each plant Jade mentioned, and safe to say every single one can be found in Finland (an other nordic countries). Seen them all myself too! (also who brought the nestle??)

Fika/kahvi

Even tho the idea of sitting down to enjoy some sweet treats originates from Sweden's fika, it is still very common within Finland as well!

we call it kahvi/kaffe and it's the same idea of sitting down for a cup of coffee with family or friends and enjoying some cookies and other goods. We usually do it on the weekends or free days in our family, or anytime we visit someone or vise versa.

Foods

As again, the sandwhich cake (voileipäkakku/smörgåstårta) originates from Sweden, you will still find it at ex. Finnish family gatherings, birthday parties or other events.

FISH SOUP!

Due to the amount of lakes an water that makes up Finland, fishing is very common here and so is the food. The most common type of fish soup that you'll have here is lohikeitto (salmon soup).

Respect for the elderly/seniors

this is definitely a stretch on my part but still think it's fun to mention^^

in finnish we have a thing called 'Teitittely', it's hard to explain as it it is not used in the english language, but rather than directly referring to you (sinä) we use a more indirect 'you' (te) to show respect for our elderly and other occasions. If or once they would prefer the person to stop, they just need to request that there is no need to be as formal.

Pancakes

Again was very surprised out of all things that they referenced a type of pancake we have here (pannukakku which literally translates to pancake)

The pancakes that Epel is talking about look like this, and are put into the oven. it's hard to describe the texture of the inside, like a really soft sponge?

On the topic of pancakes~ i want to also mention the ones that we saw at Kokko market (that the bois mistook for takoyaki), all tho i have never seen or heard of pancakes being done the way they were in the event, during autumn or colder seasons if there is a market you will usually find at least one stall making flat (lettu) pancakes on a big pan!

which you can then buy and fill however you like. The most common fillings are apple- and strawberry jam, and/or whipped cream. And some even add sugar to them. People like to roll them up and either eat them by hand or cut in slices, kind of resembling a cinnamon roll.

Extra thoughts

I won't be commenting anything when it comes to the clothing, as it seems that they are loosely inspired by traditional Sami attire. And not being Sami myself or having any relations to it i am in no place to comment about the rep.

but the embroidery on the outfits are a really nice and familiar touch^^

The backgrounds were lovely and had a very cozy feel to them, but didn't find any particular reference or inspiration of note.

Even tho the mix up of swedish and finnish traditions most likely was an accident, aside from mount moln it still works in our favor! be that if Epel is finnish or hecc, even a finland swede!

Welcome to The Log Cabin ask blog! This is a blog all about the lives of the polos from Sunrise, but mostly focusing on the relationship between Indien, Tuu, and Armo. Additionally, this blog also has a fan character named Snarl that will make very frequent appearances.

The headcanons and characterization of these characters is explained here but I’ll just write down the most important traits and information below as a TLDR. More characters from V3 will be introduced and explored only if they are needed for the narrative or if a user wishes to see them.

Indien

- A trusted friend of Indien

- Always has a group of wild animals following him everywhere

- He enjoys singing when the moon is at its highest, dancing but only if someone is with him, and he’s known to make the occasional joke or two despite his intimidating demeanor

Armo

- He/Him, 27

- Always on the run but refuses to say why

- Owns a small ranch a few miles from the cabin

- Invites himself in without knocking (Tuu is guilty of this too sometimes)

- Incredibly laid back and loves to crack jokes

- Owns several horses and occasionally drops them off to the cabin (without prior notice). His favorite horse is named Isabelle

- Enjoys practice shooting (cans, bottles, handmade targets, anything that isn’t alive), dancing, playing his guitar, and singing

- He’s also known to be good at imitating certain animals

Snarl

- They/Them, 25

- Feral and extremely hostile

- Stays with Indien and barely tolerates everyone else

- Hardly stays in the cabin but sometimes visits

- They eat bugs, small animals like squirrels or birds, and wrestle large predators for fun

- They are very cat-like in personality when not hostile and surprisingly playful

Just read through all of The Great Light and The Endless Winter, and HOLY SHIT, PAL!! I LOVED IT!! THE CHARACTERS, I'M!!! ;w; And I like how you *very* seriously took into account how severe radiation poisoning would affect the cats and the wildlife in the aftermath of such an event! And how the clean-up of such a disaster would affect the wildlife and feral animals, too!! It's obvious that you put a TON of research into this whole project, and I LOVE you for it!! MIMIKO, NANAKO , & FAMILY .

one — Contrary to canon, Mimiko and Nanako do not address Suguru with his family name nor with the honorific 'sama', at least not in private. They use these formalities only when speaking in front of strangers, enemies, and people they're still vetting. In private and around close 'family' ( such as Miguel and Manami ), they call him either: Suguru, papa, or Otō-san; their preference is papa.

two — I know Suguru was shown as being very egotistical and crazy as the years went on, and while I do think he would come off as such when stressed, in the midst of a violent episode, or dealing with an enemy, he was not like this in front of his daughters. He knew how to compartmentalize his work. Kind words and a smile were always used when regarding them.

three — Suguru did not only work hard to make his vision of a peaceful future a reality, he did it to provide Mimiko and Nanako with a life they deserved . . giving them everything he did not have growing up. New clothes, music lessons, instruments, art supplies, vacations to international spots ( away from humans ), and so forth. He spoiled them .. to a point.

He still emphasizes the importance of learning history, calligraphy, foreign languages. For things which Suguru did not know how to do, such as reading sheet music, he either hires or recruits 'curse users'* he trusted to teach them. His favorite thing to teach the girls is science. More accurately, compassion and empathy for nature and living things. Ironic? Yes. It wasn't simply thinking dogs and cats are cute; it was about learning animal facts, having a community garden, and helping any injured wildlife they found.

four — He considers all his close comrades as family. If someone wants to fight and die for his cause, he won't say no, but he will not force someone to do something dangerous if they do not wish it. It's a very difficult mentality to keep up as the years go by. He does think sacrifice is necessary, but he also does not want to witness anyone die with how few of them they are. He never required anyone in his found family to use the 'sama' honorific around him in private.

five — Mimiko and Nanako are the most important people in his life. He loves them so much it quite literally hurts him. He always makes sure they are safe and several someones or somethings have an eye on them at all times.

*NOTE , Suguru does not refer to sorcerers who do not conform to jujutsu politics as curse users; he finds that insulting and crude.

Revan + Padme

As like most days Revan was in the main hall of his home hovering about six feet above the ground. At times he would glimpse images of his past some of the future and as well as the present. he felt the war raging in the galaxy. There would always be another war. No matter in the past how many times he tried to stop them or even start one to protect the republic it may work for a time but it was the way of things. It was why he had chosen this almost empty planet. Personally he loved his new planet. It was quiet if there were some settlers they were few and far in between. Same with miners the wildlife tended to be too much for them though the animals seemed to like him well enough. Lush forests, waterfalls, lakes, and of course the mountains. That was where he lived in the largest of the mountains over his many years he had carved it out with his lightsabers the perfect home that had some similarities to a temple. There were many rooms workshops, storage for all his collections of lightsabers and other weapons and armor, a few droids that roam around, his library with holocrons and datapads, deep in the mountain a hot spring and of course a hangar for his ship and speeder. Then it was like a wave hit him all at once. As though the force itself was being attacked all at once. Force users being killed at a level he had not felt for a very long time. Then in an instant the flashes of deaths vanished and he saw a pregnant woman being choked by a Sith on a fiery planet before the Sith was attacked by a Jedi. In that instant he took action the first time in a very long time. Getting in his ship powering it up and heading out into the galaxy again. His ship was not all that pleased after sitting so long but she still worked well enough. It took several days to get to the planet Mustafar. He landed on a distant pad and made his way out on the surface. He arrived seeing what he had seen in his vision of the sith attacking the pregnant woman and then dropping her as he started his fight with the Jedi and the pair moved away. He moved over quickly and feeling that the woman was alive he put her to sleep using the force. He took a moment to grab some parts from the ship and downloading the database and star charts before returning picking the woman up and carrying her back to his ship and laid her down. He took off and returned to home plotting the course with the updated star charts and was off for home. He kept a careful eye on the woman the entire time healing her throat but kept her asleep waking up could be to stressful for her after what she had just been through. They arrived to his home and he carried her off the ship and to his room he figured that she would be most comfortable there and he stopped using the force to make her rest she would wake more naturally now though he could not guarantee that she would not be stressed. Afterall she would wake in a strange place with a stranger, but after being attacked by a Sith he hoped that it would not be the worst. As he waited for her to awaken he had a couple of his droids going around to clean and one to make some clothing for the woman and the babies.

And while we're comparing this:

There is no town or city in the USA that is only Mansions and Rich People. Even Pacific Palisades (which honestly I've never been through and maybe heard of in passing before these fires) have lower and low income areas. Have buildings where people work. Have restaurants and grocery stores. Schools where teachers work. Fire isn't a moral avenger. It's just fire. It consumes anything it can. So this fire is hurting A LOT of people, not just rich people. You're just hearing about the rich people more b/c they already have a platform.

LA County is really really big. The Palisades fire is one of (last I checked) four fires going on. Santa Ana winds (ever seen The Holiday? Those winds, they come and go and sometimes change directions) make fire season so much more precarious and dangerous. Lack of rain this winter and an unwillingness to listen to indigenous experts on land care makes those fires potentially devastating, because our cities butt up against wildlife areas, either preserves, parks or just wide swaths of land. Our fire department (that is currently being supplemented by prison volunteer labor) is struggling to fight these. If LA city is lucky, they can get help in, but it's not going to be like that show 911 or 911 Lone Star where the cavalry drives in. It's bureaucratic, it's slow, and it's only if others are able to.

ALSO, just remembered, a few months ago State Farm canceled a ton of insurance accounts in the area, because the fire hazard was rising. So people who had been paying into the system, for months or for years, who were trying to be responsible and invest in their future, got the rug ripped out from under them.

I remember people on tumblr scolding other users for mocking London citizens for complaining about the heat wave years ago. People were dying, even though the temperatures weren't "that bad". London infrastructure wasn't meant to help moderate heat, it was meant to keep heat in, and air conditioning was hard to get if it was even available. That awful freeze Texas had a few years ago, I saw people shut down others making fun of desperate families who died because of smoke inhalation or chemical inhalation because they were burning fires inside their house, sometimes their furniture, they were so desperate for heat. The people who were dying were more likely to be poor and/or minorities, regardless of how they voted.

So for the love of all, cut that out. Stop saying "Burn the Rich" or that Pacific Palisades got what was coming to them. They absolutely didn't. Two of my husbands co-workers lost everything, one came close. They're not well off, they just got lucky in being able to buy a house there, or they're a two income family so they can afford the HCOL and wanted to live closer to the ocean or have better schools for their children. You're going to say they deserved it? Shut up, or start helping.
