The grass grows long and thin out by the Wandering Isle, it is a contrast to the wisps and depths of cut grasses you grew up with in Ravka. But that's the point. You like that it doesn't remind you of home, that it is different than where you lived a life that feels like it isn't yours, that it was so long ago no trace of the person you are could be found in the same body that was belonged to you.

There is a tugging on your sleeve and you look down and a younger version of your own eyes glimmer back up at you. "Yes?" you ask gently.

"He's here," the s is a little prolonged as age is yet to wear off the childish draw of words, but it's sweet, "can't you hear him?"

You shake your head and look up to see the stone path pathed into the long grass, guiding someone right to your door. Tolya smiles up at you, and you feel the sun beating down on your shoulders, the warmth of the rays that only seem to shine this bright when he is around.

Tolya catches your child who is all too eager to jump up at him, eager to play. And Tolya, the saint he is, is always so eager to return the enthusiasm.

You're not sure where you would be without him, having lost your husband to the war was hard, it is hard for any widow, but having a child to raise alongside that grief, even as the war ended nothing seemed to be easier. Not without Tolya. Tolya has been invaluable.

"You came," you smile at Tolya.

"Have I ever not?" he asks. You hold your arms tight around yourself, watching the two of them.

"You two, keep each other distracted, I am going to make us some food," you tell them.

"Let me help," Tolya tries, but the small hands clinging to his arm hold him gently back.

"You always do more than enough," you assure him, "I will bring the food out."

You knew everything was going to be hard, your life hadn't been much less than difficult for as long as you remember, you married your husband and you lost him in a relatively short span of time. You were alone, and lost and overwhelmed, and you thought trying to keep yourself afloat might just be exactly what drowned you. But there was Tolya. Tolya who you'd known was true to his word, but never could have imagined was this true, this... saving.

Tolya promised you when you told him you needed to leave, and that you felt so alone, that the distance would never stop him from making sure neither of you felt absent. Neither of you felt forgotten. He promised not to let you drown. Tolya loves your child like his own, and you know that, you see it. And he is here every moment he can spare, and moments you're sure he likely cannot spare, but he does anyway.

You weren't sure you had room for everything in your life before, and you were sure you'd never make room for anything else, but with Tolya, it doesn't feel like he takes up room, instead he makes room.

You're watching the two of them through a window, not paying the attention you should be, and you slip, you manage to keep your curse quite as you clutch your bleeding hand. "Saints," you reach for something to wrap yourself up with and you notice Tolya in the doorway.

"You're bleeding," he says, trying to figure out if you're more hurt than you're letting on.

"You're fast," you tell him. You look out the window.

"Looking for ladybugs," Tolya reassures you. "I can hear both your heartbeats from anywhere on this property. Please, let me help."

You sit down and let him help you with your hand. You try not to watch him, and in doing so you stare out the window. The smiling and the sound of giggles are clear even at this distance. There's a few excited yells of "I think I found one... no... just a fly." You laugh to yourself and you turn back to see Tolya's lips gently curled up at the edges.

"I... It doesn’t hurt at all. You’re incredible," you say, staring down at your hand in his. He smiles. You realise how childlike you must sound, you don't doubt he has been dealing with cuts and scraps since before he was your child's age. You've just never seen him use his capabilities before, and although you've known what he is capable of in theory, in practice it feels just like magic. You could have done with magic like that when- you cut off that trail of thought quickly.

"It's not much," he tells you. If he could, he would take every pain away, the big ones, the small ones, the aches and pains, the wounds that lay beneath, he would take it all away, never let pain touch either of you ever again, if only he could.

"Do not try that, not with me," you tell him, giving his hand a small squeeze, something you shouldn't be able to do right now. "You know you make such a difference here, it feels different when you're away."

"I feel like I make the most difference here," Tolya says, looking back towards the door. "It feels like I am always being pulled back here, every time I go away."

"We miss you," you told yourself over and over that you wouldn't say that, not like this, not with such a soft tone that gives away just how much you feel his absence. You told yourself time and time again you would not say that because it is not fair on Tolya, that he already does so much, he is already stretching himself thin being here, that you feel you already get so much of him, that it's unfair to make him feel like there should be more to give. But there was no better thing to say, no truer thing.

"I miss you both," he tells you, and with the gentlest of touches runs his thumb over your knuckles before letting himself breathe in deeply. "Now come on, let me help you."

"You never stop," you tell him. He smiles.

"I do not consider helping you a burden," he states. You feel a pair of watchful eyes on you in the doorway, you'd been focused on not saying a million little things that were threatening to pass your lips that you hadn't heard the pitter patter of feet running up to the door.

"Food?" comes an almost tired voice.

"Yeah, food," you nod getting up again. You let Tolya help this time, humming gently as he stands beside you.

"I should bring my sister around," Tolya says, throwing you a glance even though the words aren't aimed at you.

"Tamar," comes an eager giggle.

"It's been a while," you say, laying the plates.

"She asks about you," Tolya says, "she wants to know where I am spending all my time."

"She could visit you know," you remind him, "I think we would be far to selfish in keeping you all to ourselves." That comment earns a pout, and the pout earns a chuckle from Tolya.

"I like that you two keep me to yourselves, I would stay here forever if I could."

'If you wanted me to.' It's silent, it's unspoken, it's five words that are far too simple for all the meaning they carry, all the complexities tied up in barely any words at all. The complexities poets could fill books with stand between the three of you, and unpacking it might take a lifetime. But you would spend your life doing it if you could, if it was wished of you, if he wanted.

'I never want anything less.' You know 'we' would be just as true a statement, but in the silence, in the space where the words can lay unheard and un-whispered you can be more honest than you need to be. So you are, in the silence, just a little too honest about how much you want him to stay, and in return, in the silence, in the places where the words are never heard, he is a little too honest as well, about how he never wants to leave.

may 28th review— the kinks are the village green preservation society!

what better way to start this blog than with the album it’s named for! the kinks are the village green preservation society by the kinks (shortened to VGPS from here on out) is the 6th album by the kinks and the second in what was considered one of their musical runs (something else, VGPS, arthur, and lola vs the powerman).

this album is truly an experience and while I’m super biased towards the kinks as a band, I do think this is a great album with lots to offer musically and lyrically.

1. the village green preservation society

• what. an. opener. the entire song sets a nostalgic but ironic and sarcastic tone that carries through the rest of the track. all the references to old british… things basically. the vibe is so wanting of a better, older time and the idea of a village green (which to my understanding is sort of like a park minus all the swings and stuff, basically a nice open area void of anything urban) preservation society as a concept, doing their best to hold onto traditional british society here, is done super well. preservation societies are a real thing, and it’s interesting to think that through all the social change of the 60s, this song was really only concerned with the way things were. food for thought (or am I insane?)

2. do you remember walter?

• I couldn’t tell anyone why, but this song reminds me of mr. blue sky for some reason?? I’ll admit, this one took some warming up to. apparently, walter was a real friend of ray davies’. after drifting apart for a few years they reunited and found they had nothing to bond over or talk about. I don’t know if I’m just a punctuation nerd or what, but it comes across more as if ray is asking if someone remembers walter rather than if walter remembers something (do you remember walter? vs. do you remember, walter?). I honestly think both are pretty valid listens of the song, and could be combined into ray asking him if he remembers his old self.

3. picture book

• PICTURE!!! BOOK!!!! this song was my third top song of 2023. the fun guitar riff, the jaunty upbeat tone, the imagery that comes with the music in this one. this is a song where I think the music does a lot of the storytelling. the tambourine in the background and the campfire song esq riff makes it so just, fun sounding. even then, I feel like the opening line is just a little ominous?? “picture yourself when you’re getting old” is just such an insane line to open with. like yeah. picture yourself fighting the inevitable passage of time but at least the guitar part is fun :) I know the entire album is meant to be nostalgic and a love letter to the way ray davies grew up, and I’m going to say the word nostalgic 20000000 times, but it’s seriously just the set vibe. picture book is a wonderful look back at childhood memories through the lens of someone who didn’t know how much they’d miss those days once they were gone.

4. johnny thunder

• fun fact, new york dolls guitarist johnny thunders did get his stage name from this song! in all honesty, I don’t take much from this song tbh. it’s just one of those I’m happy to listen to, but won’t actively seek out, you know?

5. last of the steam powered trains

• a really solid blues-rocker! in the review I watched (vinyl mondays are great!!) abigail devoe mentions that this is the song that kinda loses the nostalgic focus of the album. I agree for the most part, but I don’t think the britishness is lost at all like she adds. steam train preservation societies are a thing and I think that’s more what ray was going for. that sense of holding on if that makes sense? anyways, musically this song is the most rock out of the baroque landscape and I really enjoy it for what it is.

6. big sky

• your girl loves a good old critique of religion. ray’s sarcastic nature shines through here and the idea of a “big sky” being uncaring towards humans is only a little scary. the switch between spoken word and singing also vaguely reminds me of church? going from songs to preaching to more songs. maybe just a me thing? who knows…

7. sitting by the riverside

• this song. wow. I think this is where the music tells most of the story. the big build into the dissonance after the first and third verses is so off putting yet so, fun with the honky tonk piano in the background. you really just have to listen to know what I mean. anyone who’s a fan of a day in the life by the beatles would probably like this one!

8. animal farm

• this song, sadly, has no relation to the orwell novel of the same name (which is kinda what I was hoping for when I went in, at least we have pink floyd!) this song is pretty straightforward in its imagery. ray laments his home life and instead wants to live with animals on a farm, and have a much “simpler” life. I think this can also be a way for ray to express his disdain for city life? the “people are real people” line seems to be a jab at city goers and how people in the countryside are more genuine. just my thoughts, though.

9. village green

• in my opinion, one of the best songs from this album. the opening orchestra is beautiful yet haunting and I love the way that vibe carries throughout the song. there’s such a genuineness to lines like “I miss the village green” which is just so. straightforward in its writing and delivery. ray does miss the village green and all the simple people. the delivery is so melancholic and I just can’t get enough of it. he’s melancholic yet jealous and nostalgic and maybe even a little angry at what could have been. this is the kinks at some of their finest imo. just. wow.

10. starstruck

• ray davies seriously just hates city life. this entire song is just one big warning about city life and how it’ll affect you. it’s pretty pessimistic, honestly, but it’s not like anyone was complimenting ray on his wonderful personality. it sorta reminds me of life on the road (for anyone who’s also a big kinks fan). ray is very obviously not a fan of the usual rockstar life and the manufacturered. on the music side, the harmonies in this one are great and the vocals are probably my favorite part! that chorus will be stuck in your head for days.

11. phenomenal cat

• now this song is just plain weird. apparently it’s about a cat who tries LSD??? it sounds a lot like a children’s song or fairytale and the chorus is just so goofy. dave davies sounds like he’s seriously on helium. bringing up vinyl mondays again, I agree with her comparison to syd barrett!! if you liked piper-era pink floyd, this is a great song for more of that storytelling.

12. all of my friends were there

• this song is apparently based off of a true story in which ray was supposed to play a show, but got sick and didn’t go on, and all of his friends were in fact there :( this song has a much better plot twist though, and I like the music hall vibe of this one! not the best song on this album, but I have fun with it.

13. wicked annabella

• probably the least “oh I miss old britain!!!! woe is me!!!” of this album. the drums in this song tho?? the vocal delivery???? there’s still plenty to enjoy here and it’s a fun track that has some great witchy vibes pretty similar to rhiannon or witchy woman tbh. if your name is annabella and you like the kinks you basically won the lottery here. dave pops off on these vocals and his scratchy tone is a lot better suited for songs like these.

14. monica

• somehow a song about a prostitute was snuck on here and made it onto the radio through subtle writing. the beat here really shines! it’s got a beachy vibe and I could definitely lay around on a pool float with this song in the background, it kinda loses the theme of the album, but with the way recording for this album went I’m really not surprised it lost focus on some tracks (for anyone who wants to hear the full story of its creation— shoot me an ask!)

15. people take pictures of eachother

• as someone who comes from a picture family (my mom is a photographer and my grandma is insane about her pictures) this song really hits tbh. the whole idea of people just taking pictures of each other to prove they exist is somehow still relevant today?? (enter “we are a society” and “instagram bad” here.) anyways, especially for me, it can be hard to find the balance between preserving memories and wanting to live in the moment without a camera shoved in someone’s (or my) face. the reference to the oak tree from village green (the song) makes me think this was meant to be a closer, but who knows.

overall I give this album a solid 8/10!! it has its weaker moments, but the stronger songs seriously hold up to the test of time and I still revisit some of them and find new things to enjoy.

"Milo!!! Milomilomilomilo! Look what I got!"

Milo lowers their book and glances up, and their eyes immediately widen in shock. "Woah. Is that–"

"It is!!" Coren says gleefully, hugging it to their chest. "An actual, real-life guitar! It's probably not tuned right and I think some of the strings are kinda busted but– so cool, right?"

"So cool," Milo agrees. "Where on earth did you get it?"

"Oh, the, um, the junk store," Coren says, with a hint of forced casualty. Milo nods in understanding. The junk store–so called because it mostly carries, well, junk–is...maybe not exactly a store. It doesn't take any company's scrip, just deals in bartering, which seems like it should be illegal, but the store is a fixture of their neighborhood and it's never been shut down that Milo's heard of, so...

"Yeah, I had to trade in a bunch of old clothes and some food—don't give me that look, Milo, I'm fine!—but I got it! And I can kinda play it! Here, look."

And without any further warning, Coren sits down on the stoop across from Milo and begins to pluck at the strings.

It's slow, and awkward, and even Milo can tell it's not very good. But as it plays, slowly, Milo begins to recognize what it's playing.

"I think I know this song!" they say.

Coren beams at them, and Milo's heart swells. "Yeah?! Good! It's an old song, a folk song, I think. I'm pretty sure I've heard it somewhere, can't remember where, but– um– yeah." It looks down at the strings and starts playing again, apparently abruptly embarrassed.

It's still not very good. Pretty bad, actually, objectively speaking. But Milo doesn't care. They think it's wonderful.

"Oh, Ray, I didn't know you had a piano."

"Oh! Uh, yeah. I- It was given to me by my family, um, I wouldn't actually buy something so- so frivolous, er-" Ray flails for the correct thing to say with increasing panic. By the time he'd woken up Milo and told them Coren was gone, it seemed too late to go after it, and Milo had simply said "Ah. I see." 

Ray had expected them to leave after that, but instead they'd started wandering around Ray's house like a ghost. Ray wants to ask them to leave, or remind them that they do both have to get to work soon, or tell them that she does want either her spatula back or compensation, but some instinct of politeness has been holding her back. And now-

"Do you play?" Milo says, looking at him directly for the first time this morning. Ray is startled by the focus in their gaze, which usually seems to be looking somewhere else entirely. If he didn't know better he'd say they look eager, but- no, that can't be it. He's never seen Milo look eager for anything in the whole time he's known them.

"...A little," she says. "Used to, anyway, I haven't had time to in...oh, geez, several years?" She forces an awkward laugh that, judging by Milo's stare, is not remotely convincing.

"Can you play something now?" Milo says.

Ray hesitates. "I- I'm out of practice. And you'd owe me, you know-"

"I know," Milo says easily. "We'll rebalance the book later. One song? Please."

Ray, pretending his best that he doesn't really want to (it's been so long, when will he get another chance?), says "Fine. One. Any requests?"

Milo answers so quickly Ray's a little suspicious. "I don't know the name, but it's this old folk tune. It's like- da da dada, da da dada, da da daaa dada dada..."

"...Yes. I know it." Ray shuffles through her music and sits. "Nice and short. Okay."

She plays– hesitantly at first, she is out of practice, but slowly picking up speed, though she flinches every time she hits a sour note. By the end, though, she's closer to smiling than she has been in a long time.

"That was nice," Milo says, and Ray turns to look at them. He'd nearly forgotten they were there. "Thank you, Ray. I'll see you at work."

With that, they turn and leave, abrupt and purposeful, as if nothing odd had transpired whatsoever. Ray is left standing in the doorway, staring after them and wondering why on earth they would want to hear something that made them look so terribly sad.

Did something happen after that scene, did they fight? or maybe Ray fight someone else? idk but thought i would share haha

Ooh YES, actually this reminds me of a post I made during filming time (feels like forever ago now!) here which calls attention to that little bruise we see. Since then we’ve seen a bit more of Ray in that shirt—just so we can view everything side by side, I’m gonna include the pics here (in no particular order)…

Ok, I believe that’s every time that white/black shirt appears! With all of those in mind, maybe they spend the day together, then they go to the club (the same club Sand sells his plum wine, it seems), Ray tries to serenade Sand with a song, they drink and smoke together and Ray gets something on his shirt so they go to the dressing room (😶)…and then they get into a fight? Or Ray fights someone else?

The timeline is confusing because Ray is definitely wearing the shirt when he has the bruise, but I don’t see the bruise in any other pic (besides the BTS one). That could imply that he gets the bruise in a later scene. After the dressing room scene, does he put the black/white shirt back on or change into something else?

I’m probably overthinking this, lol. But anyways, yes, I agree that bruise is super interesting and I’m excited to learn how all these scenes fit together! Can’t wait for the episode to air so I can find out how bad my timeline theories are, haha.

The trivia was something else entirely! I didn't know the reader was going to witness the cookie vanilla's death, even INFRONT of the reader's face at that! Though the reader do kinda see the archers cookies of the town getting squash by the big monster hound, and surprisingly the most things I found good about is golden cheese pov! I like her pov very much! I wish you could do more but I guess I shouldn't force you? I love how golden cheese was seething at reader, not knowing the full truth! I do wonder.. what will happen if she realized too late though.. I wonder how much emotions she's going to feel knowing that a Super loyal subjects of hers.. wait Reader isn't a subject in that chapter anyways lol but dam.. it most hurt if she decided to leave the reader alone then realize next day that reader was never at fault and their friends are! Like imagined you left your loyal subject to die an unjustified way, golden cheese realizing why Reader acts shy all the time, timid all the time with everyone because of the freaking thing called friends! Golden cheese basically realizes that reader have a hard time and get beat up all the time, getting called useless, nuisance, waste of space.. etc... GC was basically even pissed that she didn't waste her precious time bothering the friends with her graceful presence. Like heck she knows they don't deserve it! and the death of what if she didn't arrive.. would GC left with regret?

Though it kinda left me guessing.. why did she let them live after all that? I mean if I'm a queen, I would probably throw them back to the Colosseum for all the things they've done!

I also wanna see what she reacts when reader finds out about golden cheese's previous anger about the reader's when the reader finds it coincidence through a conversation with someone! Because golden cheese shouldn't practically be alone, since all the time there should be a servant serving her.. I wonder if golden cheese would be disappointed or mad?

(Golden cheese being mad is SSSSSSOOOOO HOOTT, SHE COULD DO ME)

And I was a little unhappy about Golden cheese indulging the reader because the reader wish that GC touch them..

"Golden Cheese is hundreds, if not THOUSANDS, of years old. Intimate acts have lost their impact on her. She does them purely for entertainment and as a reward now"It was a very....cynical way to take the story. So...yeah, I'm BEYOND glad I changed it. That would NOT have made my audience happy.

Yeah I would hate that shit, all that and the tags are Golden cheese x Reader.. I ain't hating but imma be mad if that trope ended up in the story because I'm not gonna lie? I would have dropped the story, because I interpreted that as golden cheese doing this out for fun.. that kinda hurts yk?.. but still I guess I know why.. mortal is mortal, God is God..

Though God x mortal trope is kicky and itches me in a good way, I love it.

Ughhh.....

Y-yeah, I really am super glad that I changed those things you mentioned.....So, super early on, before I was aware that many people were reading, and I was mostly writing for myself....I-I.....I wanted to be "realistic" in my portrayal of a God x Mortal relationship....My reason for this is that I wanted to prioritize making Golden Cheese as in-character as I could, and I was so insecure about her liking me that I thought "in-character" meant "unrequited". She would've still cared about Reader - saying this again, she would've STILL CARED about them as her subject. Her care for them wouldn't have been fake. And she would've still enjoyed her time with them. But....y-yeah, it was gonna be a more cynical "Did she ever truly love them back, or was she just granting them their wish like she told them she would" angle to it.....

....before I realized that....I didn't wanna do that. I wanted to indulge myself and my audience. That's what X Reader fics exist for. Sure, I did still wanna do her character justice, but that didn't mean sacrificing the relationship. I could still write her as well as I could while still embracing the fluffy and spicy moments completely without any shame. So....I changed it. I hope that explains it better! It was something I went back on pretty quickly after starting to write chapter 9. ^^

Wh-when I get down to it.....th-the power imbalance trope (which includes God x Mortal) is one of my favorite things, too....M-maybe it's another one of the reasons I fell for her......*cough* butanyway-

I-I'm glad you liked the chapter 6 part. N-nothing really to add here, you basically got it all right....It was pretty satisfying to share that, since I had people asking me about it on here before. I-I'm also glad that you aren't put off at all by the fact that she was mad at them for a time.....

I will say that no, Reader never learns about it. They shouldn't....Oh, and the reason she leaves them alive is that she wants them out of the kingdom and away from Reader as quickly as possible. If they were put back in the Colosseum, it would've taken long enough that Reader would've heard about it and....she knows they would've felt awful about it, even if it wasn't their fault. They would've blamed themselves, still calling those cookies their friends.....They should never think about them again.....So....she did that for their sake.

But....yeah....I-I'm so sorry this wasn't enough....Th-thanks for reading it anyway....I-I'm bummed now.....but at least you found stuff in there to talk about...!

But unlike Turbulent Storm that is catchy and can be sung, this Absolute Perfection doesn't really get stuck in my head.

But it's at last, like finally, a Nagisa-center song holy sheet, how many years have it been? Even in Adam, Melting Rouge Soul is Ibara-center. and in shuffle, it's just Sakumas. And the MV is also kinda lacking at a glance with the only effects being butterflies, light up tower, color-changing sky, lotus on the ground, fire sprinkler, some smoke & lighting (basic) and the random ray of divine light at the beginning. Oh and the giant gate.

But if I imagine that stage irl, it's extremely cool though, with sheer size of everything and the fricking 360° sky changing colors (the heck is this stage, are they in the Las Vegas round building). It's amazing.

And I absolutely love the giant gate, it reminds me of Virgo Shijima's ability.

Wait, I'm here to roast. So I get that their theme in this song is like eastern paradise, but those clothes are inexcusable. It's not that bad, but the white pearl necklace is just… horrible…

Meanwhile, I dislike the pearl necklace on the MV with passion. It just looks gaudy or like Miss Piggy from the Muppets or Lisa Simpson (sorry not sorry). The illustrated picture doesn't look as bad as in the MV though.

So, this was a little harder than I thought it would be. Some songs remind me of Yami Bakura simply because I heard them for the first time when I was looking at Yami Bakura art or something like that (so purely accidental association).

1.) Froe Char - Meanings (and several of their other songs, tbh) - This one is partly accidental association, but I kinda feel like this one vibes beyond that too. This is probably the strongest one here of the three.

Dark, hypnotic, subtlety oppressive, persistent droning that slowly gets more intense is what I get from the main sections of the song. (Looking mostly at 2:19, if you're short on time. But the build up is nice. Also, I just realized I don't know the lyrics, so I'm basing this on sound only.) Hazy, slightly weird, dream-like. For some reason, I get really specific blade imagery in my head from this one. Anyways, lol

You know what i get it yeah when it comes to members in groups that get super popular. It basically happens in every single group, it’s almost unavoidable (and don’t come at me saying any insert group bc you know that’s a lie). I know when it can get super biased towards one member and a company pushes them to the front and center too much it can cause not just a rift between fans but also within members themselves. Like obviously, I can totally see why a company would want to capitalize on a member’s fame because logically it makes the most sense. More exposure to them means more money, but if there’s anything i learned about trickle down economics (is that it’s a fucking joke) is that this kinda thing doesn’t work in the long term for the benefit of an entire group. This kind of dynamic has no right way to go about it, but it needs the cooperation of the whole group for it to work. Popular members NEED to also advocate for their peers and set it straight. The times i see this happen in real life I find generally really benefits the whole group. They gain more respect from their fans and their other members get appreciation. But anyways that’s just a small little anecdote. Not super well thought out, but there’s probably more i could say but yeah.
