Ever so slightly, daily and nightly, in little ways, everything… stays.
adventure time lore is insane. it starts off just being a goofy kids show that has magic for no reason, but then you learn that all magic users are manic and/or depressed (what betty calls sadness and madness). because it turns out magic is actually a cosmic force beyond mortal comprehension, that itself was learned from cosmic entities that predated the existence of time itself inside a sea of monsters. and "magic" really is just understanding more about the nature of the universe than most people. that, in a way, reality isnt "real" and understanding that allows you to mold it. and thats magic. but that drives you to insanity and/or apathy. and there are beings who hold significant cosmic importance who are more prone to magic. and the reason magic became prevalent on earth is because of a nuclear war a thousand years ago, which released the entity that represents the destruction of all life onto the world. and after a nuclear apocalypse this gave way to a new earth, where magic could thrive. but a lot of the beings we see arent even magical, theyre just mutants from what happened 1000 years ago. and humanity as we know it has been all but wiped out. but everything stays the same because cycles of war and violence continue. and it doesnt matter if its nukes or magic. everything stays the same, but still changes.

How to Edit an Over-Length Story Down to a Specific Word Count
One of the most wonderful things about writing as a hobby is that you never have to worry about the length of your story. You can be as self-indulgent as you want, make your prose the royalist of purples, include every single side story and extra thought that strikes your fancy. It’s your story, with no limits, and you can proceed with it as you wish.
When transitioning from casual writing to a more professional writing milieu, this changes. If you want to publish, odds are, you’ll need to write to a word count. If a flash fiction serial says, “1,000 words or less,” your story can’t be 1,025 and still qualify. If a website says, “we accept novellas ranging from 20,000 to 40,000 words,” your story will need to fall into that window. Even when you consider novel-length works, stories are expected to be a certain word count to fit neatly into specific genres - romance is usually around 80,000 words, young adult usually 50,000 to 80,000, debut novels usually have to be 100,000 words or less regardless of genre, etc. If you self-publish or work with a small press, you may be able to get away with breaking these “rules,” but it’s still worthwhile to learn to read your own writing critically with length in mind and learn to recognize what you do and do not need to make your story work - and then, if length isn’t an issue in your publishing setting, you can always decide after figuring out what’s non-essential to just keep everything anyway.
If you’re writing for fun? You literally never have to worry about your word count (well, except for sometimes in specific challenges that have minimum and/or maximum word counts), and as such, this post is probably not for you.
But, if you’re used to writing in the “throw in everything and the kitchen sink” way that’s common in fandom fanfiction circles, and you’re trying to transition only to be suddenly confronted with the reality that you’ve written 6,000 words for a short story project with a maximum word count of 5,000...well, we at Duck Prints Press have been there, we are in fact there right now, as we finish our stories for our upcoming anthology Add Magic to Taste and many of us wrote first drafts that were well over the maximum word count.
So, based on our experiences, here are our suggestions on approaches to help your story shorter...without losing the story you wanted to tell!
Cut weasel words (we wrote a whole post to help you learn how to do that!) such as unnecessary adverbs and adjectives, the “was ~ing” sentence structure, redundant time words such as “a moment later,” and many others.
When reviewing dialog, keep an eye out for “uh,” “er,” “I mean,” “well,” and other casual extra words. A small amount of that kind of language usage can make dialog more realistic, but a little goes a long way, and often a fair number of words can be removed by cutting these words, without negatively impacting your story at all.
Active voice almost always uses fewer words than passive voice, so try to use active voice more (but don’t forget that passive voice is important for varying up your sentence structures and keeping your story interesting, so don’t only write in active voice!).
Look for places where you can replace phrases with single words that mean the same thing. You can often save a lot of words by switching out phrases like “come back” for “return” and seeking out other places where one word can do the work of many.
Cut sentences that add atmosphere but don't forward the plot or grow your characters. (Obviously, use your judgement. Don't cut ALL the flavor, but start by going - I’ve got two sentences that are mostly flavor text - which adds more? And then delete the other, or combine them into one shorter sentence.)
Remove superfluous dialog tags. If it’s clear who’s talking, especially if it’s a conversation between only two people, you can cut all the he saids, she saids.
Look for places where you've written repetitively - at the most basic level, “ ‘hahaha,’ he laughed,” is an example, but repetition is often more subtle, like instances where you give information in once sentence, and then rephrase part or all of that sentence in the next one - it’s better to poke at the two sentences until you think of an effective, and more concise, way to make them into only one sentence. This also goes for scenes - if you’ve got two scenes that tend towards accomplishing the same plot-related goal, consider combining them into one scene.
Have a reason for every sentence, and even every sentence clause (as in, every comma insertion, every part of the sentence, every em dashed inclusion, that kind of thing). Ask yourself - what function does this serve? Have I met that function somewhere else? If it serves no function, or if it’s duplicative, consider cutting it. Or, the answer may be “none,” and you may choose to save it anyway - because it adds flavor, or is very in character for your PoV person, or any of a number of reasons. But if you’re saving it, make sure you’ve done so intentionally. It's important to be aware of what you're trying to do with your words, or else how can you recognize what to cut, and what not to cut?
Likewise, have a reason for every scene. They should all move the story along - whatever the story is, it doesn’t have to be “the end of the world,” your story can be simple and straightforward and sequential...but if you’re working to a word count, your scenes should still forward the story toward that end point. If the scene doesn’t contribute...you may not need them, or you may be able to fold it in with another scene, as suggested in item 6.
Review the worldbuilding you’ve included, and consider what you’re trying to accomplish with your story. A bit of worldbuilding outside of the bare essentials makes a story feel fleshed out, but again, a little can go a long way. If you’ve got lots of “fun” worldbuilding bits that don’t actually forward your plot and aren’t relevant to your characters, cut them. You can always put them as extras in your blog later, but they’ll just make your story clunky if you have a lot of them.
Beware of info-dumps. Often finding a more natural way to integrate that information - showing instead of telling in bits throughout the story - can help reduce word count.
Alternatively - if you over-show, and never tell, this will vastly increase your word count, so consider if there are any places in your story where you can gloss over the details in favor of a shorter more “tell-y” description. You don’t need to go into a minute description of every smile and laugh - sometimes it’s fine to just say, “she was happy” or “she frowned” without going into a long description of their reaction that makes the reader infer that they were happy. (Anyone who unconditionally says “show, don’t tell,” is giving you bad writing advice. It’s much more important to learn to recognize when showing is more appropriate, and when telling is more appropriate, because no story will function as a cohesive whole if it’s all one or all the other.)
If you’ve got long paragraphs, they’re often prime places to look for entire sentences to cut. Read them critically and consider what’s actually helping your story instead of just adding word count chonk.
Try reading some or all of the dialog out loud; if it gets boring, repetitive, or unnecessary, end your scene wherever you start to lose interest, and cut the dialog that came after. If necessary, add a sentence or two of description at the end to make sure the transition is abrupt, but honestly, you often won’t even need to do so - scenes that end at the final punchy point in a discussion often work very well.
Create a specific goal for a scene or chapter. Maybe it’s revealing a specific piece of information, or having a character discover a specific thing, or having a specific unexpected event occur, but, whatever it is, make sure you can say, “this scene/chapter is supposed to accomplish this.” Once you know what you’re trying to do, check if the scene met that goal, make any necessary changes to ensure it does, and cut things that don’t help the scene meet that goal.
Building on the previous one, you can do the same thing, but for your entire story. Starting from the beginning, re-outline the story scene-by-scene and/or chapter-by-chapter, picking out what the main “beats” and most important themes are, and then re-read your draft and make sure you’re hitting those clearly. Consider cutting out the pieces of your story that don’t contribute to those, and definitely cut the pieces that distract from those key moments (unless, of course, the distraction is the point.)
Re-read a section you think could be cut and see if any sentences snag your attention. Poke at that bit until you figure out why - often, it’s because the sentence is unnecessary, poorly worded, unclear, or otherwise superfluous. You can often rewrite the sentence to be clearer, or cut the sentence completely without negatively impacting your work.
Be prepared to cut your darlings; even if you love a sentence or dialog exchange or paragraph, if you are working to a strict word count and it doesn't add anything, it may have to go, and that's okay...even though yes, it will hurt, always, no matter how experienced a writer you are. (Tip? Save your original draft, and/or make a new word doc where you safely tuck your darlings in for the future. Second tip? If you really, really love it...find a way to save it, but understand that to do so, you’ll have to cut something else. It’s often wise to pick one or two favorites and sacrifice the rest to save the best ones. We are not saying “always cut your darlings.” That is terrible writing advice. Don’t always cut your darlings. Writing, and reading your own writing, should bring you joy, even when you’re doing it professionally.)
If you’re having trouble recognizing what in your own work CAN be cut, try implementing the above strategies in different places - cut things, and then re-read, and see how it works, and if it works at all. Sometimes, you’ll realize...you didn’t need any of what you cut. Other times, you’ll realize...it no longer feels like the story you were trying to tell. Fiddle with it until you figure out what you need for it to still feel like your story, and practice that kind of cutting until you get better at recognizing what can and can’t go without having to do as much tweaking.
Lastly...along the lines of the previous...understand that sometimes, cutting your story down to a certain word count will just be impossible. Some stories simply can’t be made very short, and others simply can’t be told at length. If you’re really struggling, it’s important to consider that your story just...isn’t going to work at that word count. And that’s okay. Go back to the drawing board, and try again - you’ll also get better at learning what stories you can tell, in your style, using your own writing voice, at different word counts. It’s not something you’ll just know how to do - that kind of estimating is a skill, just like all other writing abilities.
As with all our writing advice - there’s no one way to tackle cutting stories for length, and also, which of these strategies is most appropriate will depend on what kind of story you’re writing, how much over-length it is, what your target market is, your characters, and your personal writing style. Try different ones, and see which work for you - the most important aspect is to learn to read your own writing critically enough that you are able to recognize what you can cut, and then from that standpoint, use your expertise to decide what you should cut, which is definitely not always the same thing. Lots of details can be cut - but a story with all of the flavor and individuality removed should never be your goal.

Unpleasant Pleasantries
Rohan Kishibe x JosukeSister!Reader
Trigger Warning: inappropriate stand use, mild suggestive themes
Rohan thought this to be the perfect opportunity to get back at that imbecile with the hair of a 60’s delinquent, but instead found something more fulfilling than revenge.
It was your first time meeting the famous mangaka, but Koichi insisted that you introduce yourself to the newly found stand user as a formality.
~
“It’s better to make friends than enemies, y/n! So please do this for me.” He begged, clasping his hands tightly together as he bowed.
“Koichi-chan, he ripped out pages from your face and tried to do the same to Okuyasu and Josuke. I don’t know if I trust this guy.” You sighed, nervous and even a little scared.
“It’ll be fine, when you tell him you’re related to Josuke, he won’t even think about trying anything!” Koichi’s eyes glistened, still silently begging you to go.
“Fine, but if I don’t show up back home in an hour, call Josuke please.” Koichi nodded enthusiastically, shouting thank yous while he ran off to find your brother.
~
Thanks to the written address Koichi had given you, it was easy to find the large Victorian mansion that belonged to the isolated artist.
“Come on, y/n. You can do this. Just a quick hello and you’re done.” You tried to psych yourself up, taking one last deep breath before approaching the walkway that led up to the door.
Knock Knock
You waited, your heart rate a bit too quick for your liking.
You could hear the steps on the other side slowly approaching and suddenly stopping, only to find the door creak by.
“Now who would be disrupting the Great Rohan Kishibe?” The man spoke in a sinister tone, swinging the door open.
Rohan Kishibe looked nothing like how you expected him to. He was built slim but still toned, his green hair neatly styled and face slim and sharp with a cute dolphin bandage placed on the bridge of his nose. His green eyes stared at you intently, as if he was trying to analyze your face as well.
“I-I’m really sorry I didn’t mean to cause you any trouble. My friend Koichi wanted me to introduce myself. I’m Y/N Higashikata. I’m a stand user and I go to school with the rest of the boys.” You stammer out, guilt hitting you for interrupting the presumably busy manga artist.
The man eyed you with a devilish smirk, clapping his hands together like he had discovered something amusing.
“You’re Josuke’s little sister! Oh how fun! You know, you’re too cute to be related to that boy. Now please come in, I’ll make you some tea and we can talk.”
“I’m actually the same age as him, and I’d love to join you but I got... study plans with K-Koichi!” You tried to avoid his stare but as he made eye contact, you knew you had lost.
“Nonsense! I’ll give him a call and let him know you’ll be studying with me, now please come in already.” His smile grew while he pulled you into his abode by your wrists.
The house was lightly decorated with manga related memorabilia on the wood carved shelves and many original panels from famous mangas hung framed on the soft toned walls, but the home still held a grand Victorian feeling to it.
Your original unease disappeared as you took in the grandeur of the mansion and the interesting items that adorned it so carefully. Rohan smirked at the curiosity in your eyes and the quick movements they made while you focused on specific areas of his home.
“Would you like a personal tour of the property before we study? I will warn you though, not all the rooms have been styled by yours truly yet. It’s a work in progress at the moment.” The smile he bared had you suspicious again, but you didn’t want to be rude to the owner of such a magnificent estate.
“As much as I would love to, your home is absolutely stunning, I sadly only have an hour to study. My mom would kill me if I got home late again.” A hefty sigh escaped your lips and you gave him your best upset expression you could muster.
You hoped he wouldn’t key in on your lying, remembering the warning Koichi had given you about his ability to discern genuine emotions from fake ones.
The mangaka squinted his eyes for a moment, causing your heartbeat to speed up substantially, but his face returned to its usual smile that you swore held a bit of deviousness underneath.
“Oh! it’s alright, dear. I understand. I’ll save it for your next visit. Let’s get to your work now, follow me to the kitchen. I’ll prepare us something and you can take a seat by the window.” He gently took your hand, guiding you to the kitchen and carefully pulling out a seat for you at his dining room table.
A beautiful bouquet set in a hand sculpted vase caught your interest on the table as Rohan busied himself with brewing a fresh pot of tea. The flowers were bright in color compared to the muted ones of the vase, but the contrast made both appear unique and appealing to the eye.
“I see you even appreciate the smaller details of a home. Though I am a mangaka, I do dabble in other forms of artistic expression. Take pottery for example, I glazed this vase in a muted color pallet so it could stand out on its own when beautifully bright flowers were placed in it. The two compliment each other nicely, don’t they?” He set down two tea cups and began to pour.
“Yes! And I especially love the bright purples in the lillies you picked here.” You gently touched a petal, Rohan now lightly tapping his cheek, pulling out a chair for himself to sit right beside you.
His closeness and unwavering gaze brought a heaviness to your chest, making you stumble over your words.
“Um-m thank you for treating me so well and letting me study in your home, Rohan-sensei.” You began to unpack your notes and textbook, Rohan scooting closer to analyze what you had written.
“No need to thank me, my dear. Now let’s get to your studies. What is it you need to work on today?” The smile he shares with you is comforting, but you can’t help but feel like he was plotting something.
You set your pencil bag down and prepare your notebook, trying to make yourself busy by setting up.
“Biology. I’ve only just recently started going to school in person, but I tested well enough to be placed in the highest class. Today we’re supposed to label all the organs in this frog drawing.” Your tone comes off as annoyed and Rohan picks up on it, tilting his head to the side while he reads your frog diagram.
“You aren’t a fan of biology? I’ve got a few anatomy sketches of animals you could use instead of this photocopied worksheet. Maybe that will help peak your interest?” He stands and saunters out to find his sketches, leaving you alone in the kitchen.
When Rohan returns, the two of you work on your Biology homework for about an hour, finishing the entire pot of tea in the process. You found out that Rohan was quite skilled at anatomy, having an entire sketchbook dedicated to the anatomy of many living things, including the likes of frogs and flowers. He was extremely helpful and fun to talk with.
As you packed up your bag, Rohan remained seated in his chair, playing with one of the lilies from the bouquet. You weren’t sure if you should head towards the door and leave Rohan or wait for him to stand and lead you out. You were about to speak when the mangaka interrupted with a swish of his pen in your direction.
“Heaven’s Door.”
You felt a sharp shove of air to your midsection, sending you onto the floor. Every movement you attempted was futile as the grinning artist looked down at you. A deep chuckle haunted you while he leaned in closer to your face. His hands gently caressed your cheek, opening it up like a book.
“I’m sorry, y/n. You’re interesting and I’d love to learn more about you, but I’m impatient. It’ll be far easier for me to just read you. Don’t fret, my dear. I’ll make sure you don’t remember this.” He flipped through your pages, ignoring the tears that ran down onto the very paper he was trying to read.
“Now let’s just read the juicy bits today. You were hospitalized along with your brother when you were only four, a strange parasite made up of Dio’s cells attacked your immune system at age twelve and had you bedridden until fairly recently.” The curiosity he held for your story excited him, the pen he held in one hand quickly wrote onto the notepad he placed on the floor beside your head.
You felt like sinking into yourself, ignoring his quips and teases as the embarrassment of the mangaka reading your thoughts and feelings enveloped you. It wasn’t fair. Why did he have to be this way? He was so kind before and just like a flick of a switch, he changed.
“Oh, now how did you escape that? Here we are, thanks to Mr.Joestar’s Hamon lessons, you not only came back from your illness, but gained a proper stand and the ability to wield Hamon just like your father and great grandfather! Wait, what’s this new paragraph about?” He squinted closely, reading your page out loud again.
“I have to visit Rohan Kishibe today because Koichi told me to. He practically begged. Even though I’m scared, Koichi gave me his word that nothing bad would happen. Rohan Kishibe looks very different from what I imagined a mangaka to look. Well, what did you expect me to look like?” His smirk grows as he continues on.
“Ah, another new bit is here! Rohan Kishibe is very good at anatomy, he’s been kind and helpful, I’d like to get to know him better. I think Josuke was just overreacting when he called Rohan Kishibe pure evil. I could see us being friends.”
His smile disappears skimming the next sentence, his usual tone of voice changed as he starts to read. He sounded upset, hurt even.
You were the one being wronged here! Why would he get upset? He doesn’t have the right.
“Josuke was right. Rohan Kishibe is not nice, he is terribly mean. He’s using me for his entertainment. He doesn’t care. Rohan Kishibe is not kind, he is not helpful, he is cruel, I don’t want to get to know him. I want to forget him.”
“I hate Rohan Kishibe. I hope to never see him again.”
Rohan paused, looking away from your pages, trying to focus on anything else for the moment.
“W-well, I’ll just fix this last paragraph and erase it from your mind. You’re being dramatic, I’m not as terrible as you describe me.” Chuckling to himself, he tries to laugh off his obvious pain and attempts to regain his composure.
“No! I won’t let you erase my emotions!” You shouted, a wave of Hamon spreading through his arm as his pen touched your page, his attempt to rewrite your memory foiled.
The mangaka was sent flying back, his right arm dropping the pen and your face finally shutting closed, returning your ability to move. Although you were upset at the betrayal of trust you gave the man, you felt a twinge of guilt in your heart when you spotted his still form draped across the wood floor, cradling the arm you had burned with your Hamon.
Running to his side, all thoughts of malice left your body while you attempted to get a better look at his injury. His arm was still intact thankfully, but it was badly burned and needed to be set correctly and quickly if he ever wanted it to heal properly. You took a deep breath and turned Rohan over to see if he was still conscious.
“Oh god, Rohan I’m so sorry. I don’t know what happened.” Your eyes fill with tears again as you see the artist weakly rest himself against the wall, still holding his arm close to his chest.
“No, no it’s alright. I brought this on myself. I accept that.” He grimaced, trying to take a peek at his injuries but too frightened to actually check.
“You read my thoughts and history, it wasn’t right but you didn’t physically hurt me. I don’t know how that happened, but I promise you I’ll fix it.” You swore to the manga writer, now searching through your backpack.
When you found your pair of scissors, you went into full first aid mode, removing the sleeve from his right arm by carefully cutting the loose cloth off. After tossing the short sleeve to the side, you cut the bottom of the skirt you were wearing off into a long bandage-like shape of clothing and ran it under the cold tap water from the kitchen sink, returning to the injured Rohan.
“I’m going to wrap your arm with this, it won’t be painful if you let me use my stand, but I’m going to ask you first before I use her on you.” The man nodded, accepting your offer to erase the pain.
“Under Pressure. She’s a stand that has the ability to manipulate emotions. She can change them within a radius or focus on only one individual. When she focuses on a single person, she is only able to change their emotion to the opposite of what is being felt.” You began to wrap his arm, nervous about what he might feel when you placed the wet fabric loosely around it.
All Rohan could do was bite back his lip to avoid making any embarrassing sounds. Instead of the immeasurable pain he imagined to come with dressing a freshly burned wound, he felt a wave of euphoria. He now understood what you meant by the “opposite” emotion would be felt.
The artist never knew wrapping his burned arm would feel so good, every touch caused his breath to hitch in his throat and his eyes to water. It confused him, even though he understood that the opposite of pain was pleasure, it still startled him every time you did one more pass of the homemade bandage.
He tried his hardest not to be flustered, but when you finished off his arm by tieing the last bit with a knot, he let a small whimper escape his lips. His hand shot up to cover his face, it’s hue now a bright crimson.
Your cheeks turned bright pink as well. You turned away swiftly, to avoid eye contact.
“U-Um just stay put. I’m gonna borrow your phone for a second and let you catch your breath.” Scratching the side of your cheek, you stand up and make a b-line for the phone, dialing your home and hoping that Josuke would pick up. You glanced at the clock set on the wall, it read 8:15.
I’m late.
As soon as the phone line rang once, you spotted the front door to Rohan’s manor fly across the main hall. Peeking your head out from the kitchen, you see a furious Josuke with Koichi in pursuit.
“ROHAN-SENSEI! WHERE IS MY SISTER YOU CREEP?! SHE WAS SUPPOSED TO BE HOME 15 MINUTES AGO!” He yells out, his voice echoing throughout the home.
“Josuke! I’m here! I was just about to call you. Listen, I messed up bad and hurt Rohan. He’s in the kitchen bandaged up but I need you to heal him all the way.” You run to Josuke, giving him a tight hug while trying not to cry from the stress of the situation.
Josuke squeezes you once and let’s you go, looking you over from head to toe so he could make sure you weren’t injured as well. When he spots your torn skirt, his aura radiates a dark malice you’d never seen him show before.
“Wait Josuke! I did this to myself, we didn’t have bandages so I cut some cloth.”
He looks you over again and sighs heavily, the purple hue that was full of rage, leaving him.
“Ok, fine. Where’s that jerk? I’ll fix him up real quick so we can go home.” He grumbled, following you into the kitchen.
Even though Rohan wanted to refuse any treatment from Josuke, he finally accepted the help when you threatened to cry on the spot. His arm had returned to its previous state, unburned and fully functional, thanks to Josuke and Shining Diamond.
Josuke picked up your backpack and held the now fixed front door open for you, while Rohan stood and waved goodbye. You awkwardly returned the wave and made your way back home, your thoughts chaotic and confused.
On the one hand you felt guilty for putting Rohan through such an immense amount of pain, but you were also upset at the humiliation he put you through by reading your life with Heaven’s Door. These thoughts plagued your mind as you laid your head to rest for the night.
~
It was roughly two in the afternoon when Rohan Kishibe knocked on your front door. A short but older woman answered, complaining about the loudness of the knocks when she looked over the artist.
“Oh, my apologies. You’re that Rohan Kishibe my kids talk about. How may I help you, Mr. Kishibe?” She asked with a warm tone to her voice, leaning against her door frame and smiling up at him.
“Is y/n in? I’d like to deliver this to her personally.” He spoke softly, shaking the box he held in his hands.
Your mother couldn’t help but chuckle to herself. He appeared to be anxious and uncomfortable, most likely it was his first time gifting something like this.
“She’s not home yet, but give her five minutes. Why don’t you come in? You can wait for her up in her room, just don’t go raiding her drawers or anything.” She joked, Rohan’s cheeks turning vivid scarlet.
“I’m only pulling your leg, sweety. I know you’re better than that. Now come on! Have a seat at her desk and I’ll bring you up some lemonade.” Rohan followed her inside.
When they reached your room, Mrs.Higashikata opened the door and waved her hand to your desk seat.
“Pull up that chair there and I’ll be back with some refreshments.” Her smile gleamed at him. She walked off to the kitchen, leaving the artist alone in your room.
Rohan browsed around your room, taking in the personality that was apparent by the many bits of decor that gave your little private space a peculiar style. Your walls held photos printed on Polaroid film, sketches presumably drawn by you, and posters of your favorite video games and shows.
When he glanced around your room, he was immediately caught off guard when he spotted two volumes of his very own manga, propped up and on display in your bookcase. To say he was flattered was an understatement, he was completely floored. You were a fan of his?
His heart was heavy all of a sudden, he felt a dreadful pain in his chest while he held the book in his hands. He turned his head toward the doorway when he heard your voice greet your mother. To regain himself, he quickly skimmed through the pages of the manga he was holding, hearing your distant conversation come to an end.
You entered the room. Dropping your bag at the corner of the closet, your eyes never leaving Rohan while you take a seat on your bed. The mangaka gently placed your copy of Pink Dark Boy back in its original position, turning around now to face you.
“I’d like to humbly apologize for my abhorrent behavior and actions yesterday. I was terrible. I know it might be asking too much of you, but I brought you this as a peace offering. I want us to start over. I’d like to get to know you the right way.” He passes you the box he was carrying with him, nudging you to open it.
Casually unknotting the bow and removing the lid from the bottom, you slowly lift what appears to be a white sundress out of the box. It was beautifully made and looked to be just your size.
“I know it’s not the skirt you tore, but I felt like you deserved something a little more unique.” He averts your gaze quickly when you attempt to gauge his reaction.
The mangaka appears to be flustered, apparently not very used to apologizing. His eyes held a fear of rejection but also a glimmer of hope. A breath you never knew you were holding was released with a quiet hum.
“It’s beautiful, thank you, but do know that buying me things isn’t going to repair my trust in you. We can at the very least start over though.”
Rohan smiled to himself, thankful for your empathetic nature, and nodded a quick yes.
“Now that the pleasantries are out of the way, how about we take that dress and enjoy some tea at the cafe? My treat.”

Summary: Outer Banks’ famous flirt, unnoticeably falls in love with his workplace’s introverted girl.
A/N: Anonymous asked: Hi!! I'd like to request an imagine where JJ falls in love with an introverted girl, shy and lowkey - so basically she is his opposite, and he realizes that the way he usually flirts with girls wont work in this case... but she falls for him eventually and they get together. Just some cute fluff. 💕
Here it is anon, I hope you enjoy this imagine, thank you for requesting it. I don’t know if it’s something you asked for, but I tried my best. Please write to me if you would make any changes.🥰 *REQUESTS ARE OPEN, JUST GO TO ASK ANNIKA*
---
It was another, of JJ’s least favorite days. The sun was work-class’ biggest challenge, but they couldn’t go against anything because the money that needed to go to their families can’t wait for lazy people. And JJ, being JJ, pushed by his father to bring home some money so he could drink them or smoke them away, was sent to one of Outer Banks’ most favorite flower gardens, to lift bags of fertilizers and soils.
His whole body was shaking since he hadn’t eaten for days now. But the boss was there and observing the work they’re doing. He wasn’t any type of Kook, maybe somewhere in the middle, but he gave small jobs to people who needed a bit of money for living a day or two. But for JJ, everyone who gave jobs to other, was a Kook.
He thought his whole life ended, since he had carried more than 50 bags of soil and fertilizers. That was it for JJ; giving up was the only way he’ll stay alive and continue with living his normal teenage life, careless and free. But when he thought about the pain of his dad’s fists against his young body, it hurt less than the lack of air he got while working.
Until, she walked in. Hair falling off her shoulders, as she tied it in a messy bun. Her smile grew bigger, at the man stood behind JJ. She politely greeted the older workers, wishing them an easy work, and hugging JJ’s boss. Their smiles and eyes were the same, and it wouldn’t be hard for anyone to realize that they’re related. But she was then, gone behind the amounts of trees and flowers. And JJ didn’t even notice it; he was caught stunned in a second and didn’t even realize she wasn’t there. Regret heated his brain and he had nothing to do in the moment to find her and at least ask the girl for her name.
-JJ! -someone yelled his name. He turned around to find his boss, gesturing him to come over. He shook off the dust from his hands and jogged over. -Can you please, carry the flowerpots to the center of the flower garden please?
-Sure, of course Mr. Y/L/N. -said JJ, immediately getting to work. As he approached, what JJ supposed was the center of the flower garden, he heard a few quiet mumbles. But as he approached it more, they turned into clear sentences. He stopped in his tracks, to take a peek behind the big tree.
-You should be strong, really, really strong. So kids could love and cherish you, every day they play in their gardens. And you also need to stand tall for them; and their families will be motivated to continue life, even with the amounts of difficulties they go through.
JJ was stood there, taking in ever word that came out of her mouth. And was more surprised that they came out of the girl that took his whole heart in just first sight. She was full on, having conversations with the flowers.
-Y/N! Y/N! -many kids came running to her and surrounding her on the beanbags.
-Hi, little sweet peas. -she greeted them.
-We want you to teach us about meaning of the Forget Me Nots flower, pretty please. -the little one put his hands together and pouted at her.
-Okay, I will. -she smiled at them and all their concentration was on her, -Hmm...the flower has powers, to protect humans from witches, for example symbolizing luck and protection. It means true love, and if you give this flower, to someone you love it means you respect them. It’s a promise to the other person, that you’ll never forget them. Being truthful to them and expressing the long-lasting connection that’ll never be shaken.
-Thank you Y/N, I’ll give it to my mum. -said one of them and they all happily separated around the flower garden.
For JJ who was still stood with the flowerpots behind the tree, felt a different excitement, something he had never felt before. This feeling was strange and foreign, and he knew it wasn’t going to be that easy for him to get closer to her. She was nothing like those Tourons who were easy-minded to get closer to; rather she was as precious as a flower.
And not only was it strange for him to feel something, for a person that’s not really his type, but also suddenly questioned why he softened at her view and how she didn’t reject the kids from telling them, about the beautiful meaning behind a beautiful flower. JJ collected the strength, and showed up in her view. Her shyness could be read in her eyes, and her cheeks immediately bloomed into a shade of pink. She continued with taking care of the flowers, and JJ spun around to see where to put the flowerpots.
-Sorry, -he said, catching her attention, -where do I put these?
-Uh---she rubbed the back of her head, -put them beside the counter.
-Thank you...-JJ gave her a smile and did as told.
-----
-How was work? -John B asked, placing two plates on the table for him and JJ. JJ, being hungry, he dived into the food his friend made filling his mouth with big bites. -Slow down champion, there’s enough food.
-It was the best work day I’ve had in my life so far.
-Something different happened today, or did they give you more money?
-That and something way, way different. -JJ talked with his mouth full.
-What’s up?
-There was a girl; the little kids she tutored on flowers said her name, but I couldn’t make it out from their little baby voices. John B----she was the most precious thing I’ve laid my eyes on. She was like this---magician, that suddenly made everything many times better and lighter in the flower garden. You should’ve seen, how the kids took in everything she taught them. It was breathtaking.
-Did you talk to her or something?
-I just asked her where to place the flowerpots.
-That’s it? -John B made and unimpressed face.
-What, bro? I didn’t know how to approach her.
-You? JJ? Maybank? Didn’t know how to approach a girl? Unbelievable. Dude, you’re the biggest flirt on this island, approaching a girl is a piece of cake for you.
-Well, see, it wasn’t. She’s different. Different from the ones I flirt with. You can tell, by just the look in her eyes, dude. That princess isn’t just blankly titled with the word; she really is one.
-Woooow, JJ Maybank fell in love with a completely opposite girl of him. I could see it and not believe it. Love really caught you by the collar bro. -he teased his best friend, -Huh, also, Kie’s coming over with Sarah later; they wanted to introduce us to their very good friend.
-They’re bringing her to the kegger, we have one tonight. -he downed the left over water in his cup and walked to the kitchen to leave his empty plate in the sink.
----
Kie and Sarah got ready together, picking up their friend from her house on their way to the kegger, like decided. She was sat at the back of the car, playing with her fingers. Nervousness had trapped her in a cage and she couldn’t slow down her beating heart. As Kie stated, she wasn’t a kind of person, to freely go to unknown places in crowds with unknown people. And they even hardly persuaded her into meeting the other three boys, of the Pogue group.
John B was talking to Pope; both of them discussing about the minimal number of people that started to attend keggers, while JJ was going in for the drinks of course. Kie stayed with her friend, and Sarah went to collect the boys so they could come and meet her.
-John B. -he said, shaking her hand.
-Y/N, nice to meet you.
-Pope.
-Y/N.
-There’s another one, but he’s---said Sarah, waving at JJ as he came in her sight, -coming here, right now.
-This is JJ. -said Kie, introducing the blonde to Y/N. From the second his eyes recognized her face, they slightly widened and he got that same excitement as earlier. It was because of the same girl he saw at the flower garden and talked to John B about, The girl that rearranged his entire system.
-Y/N. -she said shaking the bemused boy’s hand.
-JJ. -he held a longer grip of her hand.
The whole night, JJ didn’t even look at another girl; his eyes were glued to her shy figure. She didn’t have those famous red, plastic cups in her hand like the other two girls and she talked less than them. It was too obvious Y/N wasn’t used to these kinds of gatherings. The looks and glares she got sometimes, seemed to make her too uncomfortable, so from time to time she scooted closer to the group, as if she’s hiding.
-...and then Sarah and I somehow, decided to get matching everything, themed, are you ready?....dolphins...the theme was dolphins and I couldn’t be more happy about it. -said Kie.
-JJ. -Pope nudged him, -JJ. JJ.JJ.
-Yes. -he snapped out of his thoughts.
-What yes bro, I didn’t even ask you a question? -Pope laughed following his gaze to see what he’s looking at, as his eyes land on the quiet girl opposite him.
And many more days like the kegger passed by. The Pogues got to know Y/N a bit more, and she seemed to get comfortable around them. She did wood figurines with John B, talked science with Pope, went shopping with Kie and Sarah and got the new taste of the outside world better, and it definitely felt way more fun to her to be able to have an activity outside her room or the flower garden.
All of them were so welcoming and she appreciated the time spent with them, but if she was to choose, who made her the happiest, it would be that blonde that she saw every day at the flower garden. They went surfing together, got ice cream; JJ attended her flower teaching classes; Y/N helped him with work, they made food together, caught fish and many many more activities. He helped her fight the shyness away and was more than happy to have a friend like him.
But, that ‘friend’ started to slowly leave her, when she unnoticeably stared at him for way too long, or would wait for his text so she could peacefully go to sleep. She felt so happy next to him and somehow always wanted to spend more time with JJ.
-Y/N! You need to come to the Chateau like right now, JJ got into a huge fight with some Kooks, his whole face is bleeding, we literally soaked three cloths in blood till now. Please come, he keeps saying your name. -Kie shouted from the other side of the phone.
Panicked Y/N barely tied her shoes, trying to get to the Chateau as fast as possible. It was nighttime and she didn’t care about the lack of people on the streets; the only thing she had in mind was helping hurt JJ. She entered the Chateau and fairy lights lit up the whole place. On the ground, there was a white carpet on leading to the house and a flower. She immediately knew what flower it was and when she lifted up to read the note; her eye catching another flower not too far away, then another one and another one, she collected a lot of notes and a whole bouquet of forget me nots. The notes were:
“YOU”
“ARE”
“THE”
“ONLY”
“FLOWER”
“THAT”
“MAKES”
“THE”
“BOUQUET”
“IN”
“MY”
“HEART”
“STAY”
“ALIVE”
She came closer to JJ, him holding the last note and the flower. Y/N took it from the flower and opened it to reveal more writing than the other notes. JJ on the other hand, wasn’t in his every day clothes; he tried his best to be elegant but with his own style.
“I never saw this coming, but definitely looked forward to it after. Y/N, you’re the most insanely unique girl I’ve laid my eyes on. Would you let us both, complete this bouquet?”
Y/N looked up at JJ with her nervous look and it took her only a second to nod with her head in agreement. She loved him and he loved her and if she was to let her shyness get in way, then it meant her pushing her love away. His worried expression softened and he slowly stepped closer to her and passionately placed a kiss to her lips. The other Pogues got out and cheered for Y/N and JJ.
-New love is born Poguies! -shouted Kie.
-Yeah baby! -Sarah jumped, -Let it be love!
-I say the same thing. -JJ said to Y/N and cuddled her on his chest.
After all, Y/N changed JJ and JJ changed Y/N, both of them becoming each others most love persons and it was enough for them to be together. That Forget Me Nots bouquet was safely placed and taken care of in their hearts.

Orchard, 21.03.21: Vitamin Z
Vitamin Z
This week I was reminded of why I started this course of changes. I don’t know how appropriate it is to refer to someone as your muse today, but I knew regardless. It’s like an adrenaline shot to the heart, one of those cinematic, dramatic ones that snaps you out of the in-and-out, humdrum, mundane world around you and pulls you, heart-first, back into why you started what you were doing.
I probably won’t meet her again. I’m sure that ship is at a nicer dock perched on a virtuous coastline and carved out of six-pack abs. But, I’m grateful.
It’s easy to find the flaws in someone who rejected you. In her case, I couldn’t find any. She was just right to turn me down.
I missed her. I miss her. But there’s wonderful women everywhere. And I’ll take to heart the changes I need to make so that I don’t miss the next her that crosses my path.
Budget
In the spirit of that, I sat down to figure out my budget for the next year. And it’s looking surprisingly optimistic.
My goal is to move up to Syracuse. With my financials figured out, I just need to not lose my job and I should be able to make it my next June.
Needless to say, I was happy to learn that.
Facebook Writers
What I wasn’t so happy about is the series of Facebook groups I’ve joined. As you can tell, writing personal things isn’t really my strong suit. Certainly not in situations like this, where I’m making myself do it. But, considering that I am one writer out of hundreds of millions in the world, I imagined it be nice to acquaint myself with some people. Marketing for writers isn’t easy, after all. Especially when you’re not named.
But the communities are all pretty…vitriolic.
A man asked which of two covers worked better for his book. Being a group of writers, he received dozens of detailed responses. Answers wherein the speaker was more interested in showing off their understanding of literary and publishing nuances than actually answering the questions.
My response: “Number 1.”
A woman made a detailed list of the stereotypes applied when male writers write sexually active males against how they write sexually active females. Of course, the problem was these were stereotypes in writing. “Men who sleep around are great! But women who sleep around are sluts!” “Men who aren’t interested in sex are focused, driven by success in life! Women who aren’t interested in sex are lesbians!”
She applied this long list of writing faux pas on the shoulders of male writers. And this led to more arguing.
People post clips of their book as they’re writing it. A commenter tells them to use more commas and write shorter sentences. A poster volunteers themselves to give out their opinion, making sure to note that they’ve run a blog for the last ten years, so you know their word has value.
A Facebook certified “Conversation Starter” describes The Face by Dean Koontz as “tiresome, tedious, ostentatious” with “florid prose and so many extended metaphors”. This followed by a flood of comments about how much Dean Koontz sucks and questions of how he got so popular.
I’ve never read Dean Koontz, but I’ve heard of him. I don’t recognize any of these people by face or name.
Crabs in a barrel. There’s no success too small for these people to put down. There’s no templar too noble for them to not shit on. There’s a million complex, pretentious, “it depends”, pseudointellectual answers to simple questions like, “Does the blue cover or black cover look better?”
I’m happy I didn’t go to college to write. I can’t imagine what it’d be like to some out this exhausting.
It feels like people don’t understand that there’s success to be had for everybody when it comes to writing. There’s not always fame and critical success. Or an interview tour or a movie deal. Or a place in a high school text book or pop mythology. Or billions of dollars in the bank and vacations to hunt sharks with a shotgun.
But success is available to everyone. Appearance may vary.
I don’t know if I’ll stay in these groups. Or if a non-collegiate writer like me would be expunged. But I take peace in the knowledge that if I ever want to know what type of writer I don’t want to be I can just open up Facebook, click on the group, scroll half a page down, and find some example of how not to pursue this career.
In the Name of Love for Shaman King
I should also make it clear that I’m going to forego the Shaman King breakdown I intended to write. I have enough distractions from what it is I need to do.
I’m disappointed twice over. First, I don’t have the ability to pick up a new discipline and edit a video together. Maybe if I were more patient or observant, but I’m just not there yet. Secondly, I let the new viewers, the ones who get legitimately excited to experience something I used to love, who craft theories and breakdown themes, get to me.
My love of Shaman King inspired me as an artist and a writer. And while I put down my colored pencils nearly a decade ago now, I still write. And I still carry those themes of spirituality and optimism into the stories I craft.
And that’s the best way for me to present my love. Through my actual work. Through what actually inspires me. Through patience. And not a six-hour list of things I love about the series.
And that wasn’t a jab at legitimate reviewers. That was the plan.
Mom
Also, I was given a mattress by my mom this week.
Family’s a weird point for me. I don’t know if I’m ready to get into that, but I feel that I need to do a better job as someone who owes his existence to other people. I forgot who it was, but someone once said that there are two types of parents. You can be a role model or you can be a cautionary tale.
Coworkers
I’m in a good place with my coworkers, too.
The front-of-house is mostly college-aged—closer to my age than most of back-of-house—and their optimistic look on life keeps me grounded in positivity as well.
I didn’t work in too many kitchens after culinary school, but they could definitely get rough. It’s nice to be able to enjoy your work.
Commitment to Making Flash Fiction as Flash Fiction
I needed to reassure myself in my commitment to writing flash fiction.
I made an assurance to edit one of the stories when I posted it to Reddit a few days ago. It didn’t take me long to realize I shouldn’t have done that. Flash fiction is the nice decompressing poop that you take in the morning before you begin the stuff you legitimately work on. And if it’s nice enough you may even be compelled to mold that poop into a decent short.
I got myself caught up. I was afraid that, having posted many of these low-quality poops online, people would begin to judge me as nothing more than a poop writer. And when it came time to actually try to get people to read my web serial, they’d be like, “I don’t care if it’s free. You’re a poop writer. I can’t waste my time with you.”
Yahtzee Croshaw does a series called “Dev Diary” on YouTube, where he breaks down the process of making indie video games. In one of them he talked about how perfectionism sinks in. How it’s tempting to keep your work to yourself, to keep it from being judged so that others may not, by extension, judge you. He said he had to remember that he was not his work.
And I suppose I have to do the same. I’m not a hobbyist with a single story that I’m convinced will put my name on the map. I’m a writer with dozens of different ideas and could get excited about a dozen new ones in the next week.
Boxing matches are won by throwing many small punches, not throwing one with all of your bodyweight and hoping it’s a hit.
A Non-Racist Uber Driver
I had a race-related discussion with an Uber driver.
It was nice.
Pre-College Memories
I reflected on my lackadaisical approach when it came to applying for college. I was short tempered and impatient and ignorant.
It’s thanks to Vitamin Z that I realized I don’t have to actually go back to school to do what I need to do.
But the effort I need to put forward will be monumental nonetheless.
I told you I’d come back more positive.

A good example would be yandere headcanons from Maridiaraba or Dialalagirl tumblr. Hopefully this makes my ask clear now!“
[MTK: Yandere…! \(♥ ∇ ♥)/It’s a veeeeery long post, but I hope it’s ok.
If you want more headcanon-like details or whatever about yandere, just ask! I We’d be more than glad to answer~!
ATTENTION: Be careful, since it portrays them as yandere, it may mention abuse, blood, death and similiar morbid themes; if you can’t take it, don’t read!]
Shuu:
He noticed you during a lesson in the music classroom, while you were arguing with some classmates about classical music; at first he couldn’t stand your loud voice, obviously, but his interest in you awakened as he listened to your passionate and quite clever speech.
He’d be within your surroundings all the time, apparently asleep; you might think it’s always a coincidence, but, actually, he even makes the effort to move in order to follow you wherever you go, silently and secretly observing you. Isn’t that stalking
When you try and talk to him, he’d always look disinterested and would either reply with a few words or not reply at all; although he’d like to tease you very often and he’d be quite responsive whenever you’re in danger or facing troubles…
… but sometimes you may not notice it, because you wouldn’t think it’s trouble in your opinion; remember the guy you were cheerfully talking to some days before? Well, he disappeared…Do you think Shuu might be involved? Nah, he’s too lazy, or so you thought…
… until he killed a man who was harassing you right in front of your eyes.
Reiji:
You were studying at a public library for you next exam/test; Reiji was looking for some textbooks for a school project and noticed you as you were reading a quite voluminous book about Maths, admiring the resolute and passionate gaze of your eyes.
He’d start frequenting the same library in order to observe you carefully; he’d start glaring at whoever dares to disturb you during your study - and he wasn’t pleased whenever you were together with your classmates, group-studying.
He’d start talking to you by faking to be interested in some of the books you borrowed, casually talking about Maths and, eventually, everything about the both of you; you would appreciate his company, because of his good manners and obvious cleverness (though you’d be a little taken aback by his strictness about your posture and stuff like this - but nobody is perfect…).
And as soon as he joins your study group for the first time, offering everyone a cup of the tea he has brought from home in a thermos, you’ll see your classmates falling asleep (?) one after the one, before you also fall into a deep slumber…
… just to wake up in a dungeon, feeling extremily dizzy.
Laito:
Why were you even wandering around the city late at night?! You saw him as he was flirting with some girls at a pub, where you had stopped to greet some friends; you had gone to the restrooms, only to see him licking one of the girls’ neck and… biting it?! Obviously, he had seen you, and you had seen the blood: you had screamed “I won’t tell anyone!” and run straight home.
Well, he had to check out whether you wouldn’treally tell anyone, right? Therefore, after “dealing” with the pub girl, he’d stalk you and find out where you live; he’d leave you alone for some time, just observing you in the meantime. He’d be surprised that you’re keeping your word, but amused that you’re always looking around you with a concerned and fearful look on your face… something he’d start to really like about you.
He’d finally show himself and reassure you he isn’t going to hurt you, starting flirting with you(and also touching you too much) straight away; you’d be quite uncomfortable and embarassed by his costant perverted remarks, but sometimes you’d find him fun when listening to his complaints about his brothers. Oh, he’d feed on you from time to time, since you still fear him and wouldn’t like to hear his dropped voice again, after trying to defy him once.
Laito thought everything was going smoothly, but… if he was once aroused by the idea of sharing his preys with Ayato, he couldn’t really see you with someone else. He started thinking it’d be nice to have all of you just for himself. ALL OF YOU.You’d wake up feeling dizzy after passing out somewhere, confused about your memories, and…
… why were you shackled to a beadhead, in a green unknown bedroom?
Kanato:
You used to help your parents at their pastry shop; you would always been the one taking and delivering his orders, sometimes even bringing him a bonus or free samples of you father’s creations, since he was a regular customer. Once, you had given him a little plate of mini cream puffs for Teddy, noticing how much attached he was to it; therefore he started paying more attention to you.
He’d start observing you and later talking to you, from asking to see the kitchen to giving you the permission to fix his Teddy’s ear, apparently ripped off by one of his brothers; he’d glare at any guy too close to you (and those young men would be found later in bloody puddles…).
You’d be quite interested in him because of his unusual personality and let him explore the kitchen or watch you when baking your own first cakes (you were sincerely a bit creeped out when he sucked your blood from your finger after cutting some fruits); he would always stay by your side as much as possible…
… maybe too much; it had become unsettling and troubling, therefore you kept yourself busy in the kitchen and let the other employees handling the customers, including him. And this didn’t pleased him at all.At night, as you and your parents were cleaning and tidying up, you heard your mother’s terrible scream and went to see what was happening: flames were burning your parents to death and…
… he was there, gazing at you with a sinister smile: “You’re mine~”.
Ayato:
Your best friend had managed to get you in her night school in order to see a basketball match between her class and another; he had noticed there was a new smell between his female classmates and wondered why you were here… maybe just to see Ore-sama playing?! If so, then he wasn’t going to disappoint you for sure!
You’d be fascinated by him; your friend had mentioned him to be the most handsome guy in th school and the best basketball player, after all. He’d purposely look at you whenever he’d scored, making you more and more drawn to him; after the match you’d approach him and enthusiastically praise him, and he’d be very, very pleased by it, so much that he’d tell ou to become his.
You’d naively accept, but very soon find out that you had better not to: he’d always appear beside you when you’d least expect him to, interrogate you about the guy who was talking with you some minutes before (or directly pick a fight with him), scold you if you’d defy him… you’d only be softened a bit by his costant seeking of praise and attention (like a little child).
Wait, were those fangs? You were very shocked by this discovery and having second thoughts; refusing to let him feed on you, the two of you had a fight and you were about to leave him, after telling him that it was too much for you. He stopped you by painfully grabbing your wrist and pulling you to him…
… and God, you were frightend to death by his dark and grim gaze on you.
Subaru:
You were a sacrifical bride and had been sent to live with the Sakamaki brothers; he had warned you to stay away from him, but since you were often taking refuge in the garden from the others, you would meet each other as often, causing to get angry and trying to push you away.
Since you’d go to the garden in any case, he’d start ignoring you at first, only to begin watching you from afar, wondering why you were there despite his threats; later on he would silently keep you company and sometimes briefly answer your questions (yelling at you to be quiet when tired or bothered by them); he would threaten his brothers not to approach you.
He’d finally decide to make you his, starting to feed on you and always keeping an eye on you wherever you’d go; you’d feel somewhat safe with him and at the same time scared (after all, he was a vampire), longing to get away from there, but bitterly aware you couldn’t: he would have killed you, you were sure about it.
You didn’t know how much possessive he was until one of his brothers had tried to sink his fangs into your neck: he had immediately shoved him off of you and started punching him on the floor; you watched in horror as he reduced his brother to nothing less than a pile of blood and flesh. He had frantically stood up, turned to you and…
… promised you that the others were going to suffer the same fate as well.
Ruki:
Your father had suddenly lost his job, so you had decided to help your family by applying for some job and you had been assigned one as a housekeeper at the Mukami’s mansion - oh, and you were to start living there, too. You first met him because of this; but, somehow, it looked like he knew about yourself much more than he should have.
He’d make sure his brothers won’t involve themselves with you; unbeknown to you, he’d regularly check your mobile or anything connecting you to the outside world, often deleting messages from friends and those from your family telling you to come visit them once in a while; he’d always keep you busy with chores and sometimes invite you for some tea, talking about books (he’d ban you from touching the ones in his room, though, saying he’s quite fond of them).
Besides the few times you’d do something wrong and get scolded by him coldly (you’d receive lots of rewards too, since you’d be generally hardworking, patient and obedient), he’d be quite kind with you and would help you cooking and hold conversation with you; even though you can’t understand how he can often guess right about your personal traits, you’d think of him the world, probably even liking him!
Until one day, while cleaning the windows in his room, you took a break and looked at his bookcase; you noticed some papers coming out from some books and thought it’d be appropriate to fix them up: you should have never done it all of those these papers were about his plans to get you and monopolize you, even finding out he had cause your father to lose his job. You were very confused about your felings for him; then, the door suddenly opened and your heart began beating…
… and from his victorious smirk, you realized you were his forever.
Kou:
He was a little taken aback when instead of his autograph you had asked him for a interview; you had explained him you were running a blog about music, J-pop in particular. But what had really surprised him was your inner thoughts: you were totally honest about it and not showing any of the usual fangirls’ feelings; you were very serious about this.
Granting you the permission to interview him, you’d meet in his own house; strangely, his brothers would be absent, a disappointment since you had wanted to meet them too after reading all the things the idol used to tweet about his family; once seated in the living room, the interview would start with your first questions.
He’d very cheerful, but he’d sometimes tease you, however you’d be unflinching and keep on asking further about his carrier and personal life; you would ignore his winking and his mischievous smirks, and “politely” shift away whenever he’d be about to touch you.
Deep down, he was quite annoyed by your attitude, being unlike what he had always experienced with the other girls; he wanted to make you react, he wanted you to feel much more attracted to him than just his idol job and social figure. Therefore, as the interview ended and you stepped towards the exit, you suddenly felt pain in the back of your head and blacked out…
… your blog didn’t update anymore posts.
Yuuma:
He was looking for some new gardening tools and you were on shift that day because of your part-time job as the store’s cashier; first, he was taken aback by your strong and brave attitude when facing a customer who had tried to steal something and had feigned to be innocent; after that, the second thing drawing him to you was the radiant and honest smile given to your customers.
He’d spend more time than needed in the store just in order to see you as much as possible, glaring at any guy winking at you (and probably shoving him to the ground, once left the store); he’d manage to teleport inside the staff’s room to see the schedule and know about all your shifts.
He’d always greet or nod at you everytime your eyes meet, cracking a little smirk; you were just amazed by his height but you thought he was a quite nice guy, though you did notice him being a little rude to some poor young men; but you couldn’t think badly of him since he was always behaving fairly towards you (and kind to the granny who had lost all of her groceries on the ground… unless it was just an act…?).
And the day you got a surprise visit from your actual boyfriend, kissing and teasing you jokinly in front of everyone, he realized he had no other choice but to get rid of that annoyance; you were his, he was a much worthy match for you than that guy. Thus, when the two of you were on the way home…
… he just snapped his neck and only then you were scared by his height.
Azusa:
You had just met him out of nowhere, causing you a jumpscare; you had calmed down a bit, creeped out by his costant and silent staring at you, and asked him if he needed anything from you: his answer “You” had been a warning from the beginning, but probably you had been softened (or bewitched…?) by his fair and faint voice.
He’d gradually include his existence in your life, even revealing his real nature and his past to you; at first you’d be scared, but his honesty would appease you once again; the people around you would also stop seeing you, because of his costant eerie presence and also because you’d get so absorbed in him that you’d forget about them.
He’d seem too much clingy, but you wouldn’t mind since you’d think of it as a need of affection, just more fond than usual. He would beg you of cutting him with his knives and this is the only things left making you uneasy about him, but you will accept it as soon as you realize that’s it’s just a consequence of his past and think that you can “resolve” it.
Thus your overly self-confident attitude deceived you when you told him about moving in with him, in order to start living with him and help him overcome his self-harming habit. He was glad and victoriously (?) pleased by this…
… and now you’re locked up in his room for ever.

Calendars are an important part of our lives. In today’s world, people mostly use the web or mobile calendars. They can be found everywhere, including various software: booking apps, travel software, project management, admin panels, etc. Users may need calendars on websites for several reasons. The user may need to pick a date from the calendar to fill up a form or provide a date while delivering any information. Undoubtedly, this component can be called critical for business applications. Just imagine how much your business can suffer due to a badly tuned and developed calendar. Thus, this component should be given special attention and meticulousness in development. In this article, we will look at criteria for a good calendar in web applications. Also, we will show you the best libraries in different frameworks for building your own solutions based on them. Qualities of a good calendar for web apps We have picked the criteria for a good calendar from our previous article on date-pickers. Obviously, we can adapt these to calendar plugins. We divided our evaluation criteria into 4 blocks. Documentation. It is vital for whatever you’re using to be well-documented in order to learn how to build or reconstruct it. The product with no or lacking documentation does not have a right to exist. Customization. A great library should come with options that can be updated to add or remove certain functionality. This especially applies to open-source software. Compatibility. Who wants to visit a site with a datepicker that only works in recent versions of Chrome and Webkit browsers? Many business apps still work in legacy browsers. User Experience. Ask yourself whether the plugin will be convenient for the needs of your user? Does it fit your product style? The looks and quality of the docs are not that important compared to how the library will actually deal with your task. Top calendar libraries We have included various calendar libraries based on React, Angular, Vue, Bootstrap or jQuery. Some of them are more developed, some are easier to customize. Hope this catalog will help you in your work. Fullcalendar.io GitHub stars: 9400 Price and License: MIT Website/Demo: https://fullcalendar.io/ Github: https://github.com/fullcalendar/fullcalendar Type of installation: NPM, Yarn Frameworks: React, Vue, Angular This is a good choice for those who know what they want. There are no detailed step-by-step guides that describe what to do to get the goal. Only a brief Getting Started Guide and Documentation Page. Lightweight. The library is easily customizable and has many different components. The website, demos, and documentation give the impression of a mature product, which you’re not scared to use. With this, you can plan resources and mark events. Timeline view and various themes are also there. A good asset of this library is the documentation for developing in React, Vue, and Angular. Tui calendar GitHub stars: 7328 Price and License: MIT Website/Demo: http://ui.toast.com/tui-calendar Github: https://github.com/nhn/tui.calendar Type of installation: Via package managers or CDN Frameworks: React, Vue, Angular wrappers Tui is a part of a TUI library. It is built on top or jquery with options of using React, Angular and Vue wrappers. The calendar supports various view types: daily, weekly, monthly(6 weeks, 2 weeks, 3 weeks) and efficient management of milestone and task schedules. You can change the first day of the week, customize the date and schedule information UI(including a header and a footer of grid cell). The product has full documentation and can be installed via package managers of Content Delivery Network. CLNDR GitHub stars: 2760 Price and License: MIT Website/Demo: http://kylestetz.github.io/CLNDR/ Github: https://github.com/kylestetz/CLNDR Type of installation: Via package managers or CDN Frameworks: React, Vue, Angular wrappers CLNDR.js is a jQuery calendar plugin that, unlike most calendar plugins, doesn’t generate markup. Instead, you provide an Underscore.js HTML template, and in return, CLNDR gives you a wealth of data to use within it. HTML templates are well-suited to this task because they allow us the flexibility to specify where we want the data to go in our markup. CLNDR takes your template and injects some data into it. The data contains everything you need to create a calendar. Kendo UI Scheduler GitHub stars: 2160 Price and License: Apache License, $899 – $2199 Website/Demo: https://demos.telerik.com/kendo-ui/scheduler/index Github: – Type of installation: package managers Frameworks: React, Angular, Vue, jQuery Kendo UI is a big and advanced JavaScript framework. It contains tons of widgets and tools. Maybe it’s not a good idea to use its Scheduler Widget if you’re not interested in other components. The Kendo UI documentation is well written, and you can check out a bunch of Scheduler demos supplemented with code examples. Regarding the coding, it won’t take much time to build a basic scheduler and add some features to it. The default view is a little bit plain, but it’s easy to change that. React big calendar GitHub stars: 3254 Price and License: MIT Website/Demo: http://intljusticemission.github.io/react-big-calendar/examples/index.html Github: https://github.com/intljusticemission/react-big-calendar Type of installation: package managers Frameworks: React React big calendar is an event calendar component built for React. One True Pairing Interview: A Glorious "Fuck You”
Tom Fleming (formerly Wild Beasts); Photo by Jenna Foxton
BY JORDAN MAINZER
For Tom Fleming, the end of Wild Beasts represented the opportunity to start over. Just last month, he released his self-titled debut as One True Pairing, a name inspired by the concept of a perfect match between two fictional characters, but that Fleming co-opted to fit with the theme of romanticism for a better world. His touch-points? Combining the idealism of 80′s heartland rock with the grey-hued class frustration of discordant UK punk. But unlike fan fiction, Fleming was actually able to combine worlds, in real life.
Much of One True Pairing was written on acoustic guitar and recorded on a 4-track with one microphone so Fleming could really isolate the feeling of the lyrics. “If I get straight on the computer, I mess around” with “stuff nobody cares about at that stage,” he told me over the phone last month. Once he had about 6-7 solid songs and was happy with his melodies, he worked with mixer and producer Ben Hillier until they were satisfied with the songs. But Fleming appreciated his time alone, previously used to being in a band constantly bouncing ideas off one another, this time able to reflect on his own creations.
Don’t get him wrong: Fleming is still in touch with his former band mates, calling Hayden Thorpe’s solo debut Diviner a “beautiful record.” And while he’s performed One True Pairing songs live as a duo, he’s open to the idea of putting a band together. But for the most part, he’s enjoying calling the shots. “To be on the road for 10-12 years is a difficult life,” he told me. “I wouldn’t berate anybody for not wanting to do that into your sixties.”
Read on below, as Fleming discusses various songs on the album and their sonic and lyrical influences, as well as consciously differentiating from Wild Beasts.
Since I Left You: How did you achieve a balance with your first solo record between making a personal, artistic statement and a politically timely one?
Tom Fleming: I was very aware of a solo record being some kind of secret ambition I’d always had--it was nothing like that. I had no idea what I was doing after Wild Beasts. I didn’t want it to feel like an indulgence. I wanted it to have a reason to exist other than my artistic vision. In terms of being timely, I was bothered by a lot of things--it wasn’t an attempt to make a quote-unquote political statement. It felt dishonest and weird and a bit creepy to not write about what was in front of me or at least in some refraction. There’s a reason people turn a blind eye in the UK in terms of economics. They like to think they’re “woke” and these things never come up until you implicate them...I wanted to make something that had a logic outside of itself. But I was very eager not to make a singer-songwriter record from a singular perspective.
SILY: The tie-in for a lot of people will be Wild Beasts. Did you consciously decide to make something that sounds separate from that?
TF: Some of it is a reaction--not necessarily for the audience’s benefit, but because I got tired of doing certain things. Wild Beasts records were very layered and quite delicate in places. I am trying to approach this as “I am a new artist.” I’m not sure I particularly care what the artists in bands are doing next unless it’s good. I don’t think it carries over.
SILY: Whenever you see a new moniker that’s also the name of an album and a song, it’s gotta mean something. Would you say that the song “One True Pairing” is emblematic of this new chapter for you?
TF: Yeah. The name just kind of stuck. There’s a hopefulness and romanticism. The words appealed to me. Not having my name gave me a bit more freedom and a role to play with.
SILY: What about the song “Zero Summer” made you want to open with it?
TF: Lyrically, and in terms of the sonics, it’s got that kind of aggression and slightly sarcastic nods to 80′s heartland rock that’s on the record. It’s also about the life of T.S. Eliot. There are a few puns to myself in it. [laughs]
SILY: I definitely got the 80′s vibes on “Blank Walls” and the guitars of “Dawn at the Factory”, because you still did an interesting synthesis of 80′s heartland rock, but the synthesizers are used differently than Springsteen, Henley, etc. did.
TF: Thanks, man. That’s kind of what I was going for. British music is a refraction of American music, so I wanted it to be that. There’s a romanticism to what I’m doing, and I wanted to do that but also make it a bit twisted and a bit askew and have the lyrics be a bit off-message. [laughs]
SILY: Some of the songs are a bit of a slower burn, like “Elite Companion” and “King of the Rats”, which is much more vocal-forward. How did it feel to be the only one singing on the record as compared to your past experiences?
TF: It’s different. I felt like I had to sing differently. I was ready for it, though. I wasn’t the lead vocalist before. I realize how much of it is delivery. The lyrics on the page don’t feel like how they sound, not only with pitch and accent but the type of attitude you sing it with. I sing a lot more aggressively, too. Un-decorative. I wanted it to sound a bit intimidating and a bit less pleasant to listen to. I wanted it to be unavoidable. You’re gonna hear every word here.
SILY: A couple songs stood out to me for their epic arrangements: “Alive in the Resplendent Flames” and especially “Weapons”, which has a loud-quiet-loud dynamic with an explosive chorus.
TF: That was a sort of like Joni Mitchell-y guitar tune with a stealth chorus that comes halfway through the measure. “Weapons” is a little darker in tone, but both those songs both have themes of escape from marination in violence and oppressive threats. There’s a line in “Zero Summer” about being doomed to repeat the same things over and over. I was very wary of making a white boy singer-songwriter record, which I think has been done infinitely, and much better than what I could probably do. [laughs]
SILY: A lot of the good examples of those singer-songwriters records have a sense of personal sharing, which you do communicate in terms of your interaction with the world around you, especially as it comes to contemporary society and politics. You kind of felt there was a lacking in people making art about the situation we’re in or addressing it head-on. Did you feel a responsibility to do it yourself?
TF: I’ve been quite fortunate to get where I got to. There are a lot of things I won’t escape from my economic background way back. In the UK, there’s a kind of fatalism to what you can and cannot be. There’s a dishonesty about how woke people tend to be. It’s very selective and public facing. It’s not really addressing their own role in it. I wanted to implicate the listener. I wanted them to go, “Oh God, that’s what I helped to create.” I’m not the only one doing something like that, but I’m trying to offer a point and counterpoint to it.
SILY: What about “Only God Can Judge Me” made you want to end the album with it?
TF: There’s a glorious “Fuck you” about that song. It’s like a gathering together. There’s a sort of a summation. That was the only one written in the studio. We were playing around on guitar and decided to add lyrics. The lyrics of that song and the way it feels are me wondering, “What does all this mean? What do I do now?” It felt right thematically to put there. There’s an almost sea shantiness to it, which appealed to me.
SILY: Do you have a favorite song on the record?
TF: Oh man...hmm, good question. I come and go as to which one I like best. I think “King of the Rats” turned out well. It was written quite quickly. It was very much a feel thing. I like “Zero Summer” in that it begins the record with a “fuck you,” just like the end.
SILY: What’s the inspiration behind the album art?
TF: I love Jandek. His portraits are so off-kilter. I wanted to do something like that. It was the inspiration for me being in water...I didn’t want it to be kitchen sink realism.
SILY: How have the songs changed live?
TF: They’re more minimal, I guess. “Alive in the Resplendent Flames”, I’m doing a sit-down version of that, but for the most part they’re still full. This isn’t an acoustic show; this is a rock show.

Have you ever gotten “stuck” in the kitchen remodeling process? For example, many property owners find it difficult to pick out and pair cabinets and countertops. After all, it’s not just about liking the color and style of the individual materials: it’s also about whether they look good together in your kitchen.
Indecision doesn’t need to be a roadblock in your investment. Here are top tips to finding the best pairing of kitchen cabinets and countertops:
Talk to a professional
A professional remodeling contractor or designer can make your life so much easier. An expert will not only help guide you through the kitchen renovation process but can also provide you with context. A seasoned designer or contractor has worked in dozens—if not hundreds—of kitchens and can suggest cabinet and countertop pairings that work well together, based on your preferences and tastes.
If you’re taking the DIY approach, start your journey at a kitchen remodeling store. Many have kitchen design consultants on staff to advise homeowners on what colors, styles, and materials pair best together.
Select your style
Home remodeling shows have introduced a variety of kitchen themes into the popular lexicon, including “farmhouse,” “contemporary,” and “classic.” Each style has its own countertop and cabinet pairings. Think of these styles as guides: while you don’t have to completely emulate every aspect of a particular style, staying within their boundaries gives you a starting point for selecting sinks, appliances, accessories, paint, backsplash, and more.
Be sure to think about how your preferred kitchen style fits within the rest of your home. Your kitchen might contain an island, but it isn’t one. You don’t want your kitchen to stick out like a sore thumb from your living room, dining room, and other adjoining spaces. For this reason, a farmhouse-style kitchen might not be a good fit in a contemporary townhome.
Try before you buy
Many stores sell small pieces of countertop and cabinet material for homeowners to take home with them. Store showrooms are well-lit and designed to put countertops and cabinets in the best-possible light—pun intended. To get a feel for how a pairing will really look in your kitchen, you will need to get some samples to put under actual light in your kitchen.
If your kitchen features natural light from a window or skylight, set the materials down and then start a timer. At various points in the day, return to your kitchen to see what the materials look like in different types of light. This will give you a good feel for what the cabinets and countertops will actually look like when you’re entertaining, cooking dinner, or making breakfast.
Of course, this try-before-you-buy approach has another advantage: it slows down the process, giving you time to think about your choice before making the final decision.

Original Post from Rapid7 Author: Joe Agnew
This is part one in a three-part series on medical device security and risk management, particularly as it relates to vulnerability assessment. In part one, we discuss the processes and procedures to implement inside of a clinical environment to position the security team for success. Part two gets in the weeds and examines how to directly perform assessments on medical devices, and in part three, we put it all together with an example of how an organization would implement these ideas with a based-in-reality medical device.
In a past life, I was a security analyst at a major hospital. I found working in a medical environment to be simultaneously challenging and rewarding. Even though I wasn’t working directly with patients, the decisions my team and I made on a daily basis affected patients nonetheless, and this built-in level of satisfaction scratched a very particular community service itch for me. The challenges I encountered were innumerable, but I’d like to spend a little time talking about a very specific one: advancing my hospital’s security while avoiding negative patient outcomes.
A “negative patient outcome” is anything bad that happens to a patient as a result of medical action. There are two specific reasons why I bring it up. First, it’s important that information security professionals speak in the language of their organizations, and since patient care is a hospital’s No. 1 priority, technical teams that can speak in terms of patient care are the ones that stand the best chance of getting their initiatives approved. The second reason, of course, is much simpler: Information security should never harm a patient.
At Rapid7, we’re sometimes asked how our products—like InsightVM—do with scanning medical devices. It’s a logical question that results from a well-intentioned desire at completeness. Information security teams want to scan the whole network, with no exceptions, in order to identify every possible vulnerability and make appropriate recommendations for remediation back to the business.
I’d like to encourage teams prone to this disposition to take a more nuanced approach when medical devices are in play. It will require more effort and planning, but the end result will be better information, organizational buy-in, and no infosec-driven negative patient outcomes. The remainder of this discussion is going to follow three themes:
Manage the risk associated with your medical devices
Be intentional and tread lightly when scanning medical devices
Oh, and don’t scan computers that are plugged into people
Managing the security risks of medical devices
So, why scan medical devices in the first place? To find vulnerabilities, of course! In the service of our noble cause, we will get every vulnerability identified and every patch appli—okay, let’s just hold up a second.
In my cleverly built strawman here, we seem to be confusing vulnerability management and risk management, but it’s cool—let’s explore the vulnerability management piece for a second. How many medical device security vulnerabilities do people think are tracked by the major vulnerability vendors? We at Rapid7 (and at least one of our competitors) publish our vulnerability database publicly online. Do a bit of exploring and find a few medical device CVEs while you’re in there. Don’t worry, we’ll wait. *Lights cigarette*
It quickly becomes clear that vulnerabilities specific to medical devices are not commonly detected by vulnerability scanners. Do not despair, though! That doesn’t mean that vulnerability scanners are useless for managing medical device security risks. It just means they need to be used differently.
The great thing about vulnerability scanners in this use case is all of the information that gets gathered besides, well, vulnerabilities. We can use other data gathered naturally through scanning to tag the asset, assign it a criticality, and help us to make some next-step decisions. During a scan, we can expect to see at least this much:
Open ports
A guess at the services running on those ports
A guess at the operating system of the device
Some generic discovered vulnerabilities
For those looking for an enumeration of vulnerabilities, this is unsatisfying. If the running services are weird, they might not be enumerated properly, and if the operating system is some proprietary RTOS thing, the guess there is going to be a rough one at best. What is this good for? Building a fingerprint. Even if it isn’t 100% accurate, that set of ports, services, operating systems, and vulnerabilities allows us to uniquely identify that type of device on the network. In InsightVM, we can build a dynamic tag on these criteria to automatically mark these assets as they’re discovered.
The dirty little secret in clinical environments is that most teams don’t know what’s out there and don’t have a good way to figure it out. I would argue that the primary usage for a vulnerability scanner is to find and track these assets on our network. Once we know what we have and where it is, we can start with the individual risk assessments on them—that is, independent research of known vulnerabilities, network segmentation, and appropriate alerting mechanisms for devices that show up where they don’t belong. And, if you’re feeling frisky, you can start doing other vulnerability research, too.
This model has a few holes that need to be filled in. For one, we need to build fingerprints before we start wholesale scanning. There is a chicken-and-egg problem there. For another, we need to figure out what to do with the medical devices sitting in production (aka being used in daily clinical care).

Get Started
Be intentional with medical device security scanning
Look, there’s no easy way to say this, so I’m just going to say it: Those starting from zero with medical device scanning can’t just bomb the network with a scan, then start looking at weirdly identified devices to put together fingerprints. Not only are you setting yourself up for failure, but you are, in a very real sense, risking a negative patient outcome. Remember our third theme: don’t scan things that are plugged into people.
What can go wrong? Some devices may have a poorly implemented TCP/IP stack that is unfriendly to SYN scans. Some devices may dislike the speed with which enumeration occurs on them. Some devices might just have modest specifications that could tip over when touched in the wrong way. One example I know of from the field involved a well-known hospital’s paging system falling over from an nmap scan. While the IT and security teams tried to figure out what happened and restore the service, doctors and nurses in different rooms lost their ability to communicate for 20 minutes.
Being intentional with scanning means doing some homework before launching network sweeps. I recommend organizations strive to implement three processes:
Production medical device network segmentation
Pre-production scanning and fingerprinting
Maintenance cycle-based continuous assessment
First and foremost, confirm that medical devices are segmented from the primary network. This is critical and shouldn’t be done with the vulnerability scanner. Also, never assume the segmentation is done. Talk to the biotech teams and any other IT teams involved in medical device deployment, as this will develop a critical relationship and provide valuable intel. Moreover, trust but verify. Get out into the field, grab one of those biotech folks, find an empty patient room, and work with them to observe how these medical devices are deployed in the field.
This part is neither easy nor fast. It’s going to require looking through logs, getting on switches and firewalls, and poring through device configurations. Be sure to mind the organization’s goals, though. Patient care always comes first. A careless vulnerability scanning program that scans an environment while incorrectly assuming segmentation is in place might scan medical devices without even knowing it, generating an irresponsible risk of negative patient outcomes in the process.
Production segmentation is an ongoing task. In any environment, people make mistakes and assets get accidentally placed in the wrong segment all the time. In a PCI environment, this network boundary creep might generate an ornery QSA but won’t really change how scans get run. Because of the associated patient risks in a clinical environment, we must practice constant vigilance. A light discovery scan tuned for minimum impact and designed to simply identify assets should be used even in non-medical environments to defend against such mistakes. Identified devices are bucketed and properly scanned later, while unidentified devices (or even medical devices identified with a known fingerprint) generate alerts and potentially more extreme actions for remediation.
DevOps for medical devices
The other two processes essentially build out a DevOps-powered security process for medical devices. In pre-production, before devices are deployed for usage, information security must build a fingerprint on the device and perform a risk assessment. I’ve briefly addressed the fingerprint already. The risk assessment is itself a deeper subject (and this post is already pretty long, so kudos for getting here). Part two of the series will go into the “how” of performing a risk assessment of medical devices.
Suffice it to say pre-production is the time to try to break things. Scan, attack, throw the kitchen sink at it. It’s better to learn a device falls over from a particular type of scan during pre-production, rather than when it’s deployed to the network. Learnings here can be applied to the light discovery scan mentioned in the previous section.
It’s not one-and-done with medical devices, though. These devices already undergo regular maintenance cycles, likely maintained by a biotech-specific team. It’s important to identify which cycles are for the various deployed devices and that security gets inserted into that process. When just starting, you can keep it easy and make friends with the biotech folks so they notify you when devices are coming through. However, this should eventually be automated. Automation here could be as simple as watching for changes in the biotech testing environment and triggering scans on change, or as complex as a Jenkins server running through a bunch of automated tests that the biotech team does, with security tests in the same queue.
Again, throughout all of this, remember to never scan medical devices plugged into people. Instead, run a security scan before they go live or when they come out for maintenance—just do everything you can to minimize the chance they get hammered in your non-medical networks.
The upside (besides, you know, not killing people)
I’ve had countless conversations with information security teams that don’t believe vulnerability scanning poses a major threat to their environments. For the most part, they’re right. Everything I’ve described, and everything coming in part two, seems like overkill, with massive risk aversion and unreasonable precautions. However, here is a list of just a few of the awesome benefits beyond just avoiding negative patient outcomes:
An actual medical device inventory
Better perspective and understanding of the patient experience
A demonstrable SecDevOps process (buzzword!)
Rapport and relationship with biotech and clinical
Incredible learnings developed during implementation
Finally, let me go back to the start. Information security’s job is to manage risk within the context of organizational priorities. In clinical environments, there’s no priority more important than patient care. Taking steps to ensure your vulnerability scanners do not put patients at risk will not only keep people safe, but improve the overall efficacy of your security processes.
Check back next week for part two of this series, which will examine how to directly perform assessments on medical devices.
