So I know cost of living is high as hell, like no duh, but at the risk of sounding detached from the world, I haven’t ever lived on my own or had a job so far. Fortunately, my family is able to afford an adult living in the home and going to college (with tuition remission from my mom working there) on top of my younger siblings and everything.

So I decided to do some math, just to get a little more perspective.

I whipped out the calculator and typed in a wage I heard people working for, talked about as of it was a pretty low pay here but still legal: $12 an hour. Multiplied by an eight hour work day and five day work week. If I worked $12 an hour, full time, and missed no days, I’d make roughly $2050 after slightly lower than the medium income tax in my area.

Then I looked up average monthly rent in my state, and that was $1300. Typical rent of a 1 bed 1 bath apartment was $1094. With the lower rent, the remaining money I would have would be 956. With the average rent it’d be 750. The rent does not cover anything but the building. Not water, not electricity, not heat/AC, not anything but permission to exist inside the space. There’s still food, clothes, car payment and/or bus fare bc the cities are anti-pedestrian in design, and working buses makes you lucky here.

(Also if I did actually work any job that takes any effort for an hour and someone handed me 12 dollars I would seriously consider punching them in the teeth bc of how insulting that is.)
