Hii i love love your works they are truly inspiring! I had a few questions if you don’t mind sharing a bit :)

The way your characters „speak“ and what words they use seems so real and i always wondered how you pinpoint their „personalities“? I love you characterization of Lily especially, she always came across like a real person.

Another question i had how you think of these plots and subplots. Do you have a strategy or any inspiration?

Hi! Thank you so much!

Hmmmm. This is always a hard question for me to answer because most of the time it’s just “idk my brain just did the thing and now I have this imaginary person talking at me” lol.

But there are definitely strategies and techniques I’ve employed over the years to figure out voice and (hopefully) get it right. A big one is to give your characters a defining linguistic trait or habit. For Sirius, it’s cursing. None of the other characters curse as much as Sirius, and on the whole I try to use it somewhat sparingly with other characters so it’s more impactful when they do. Remus curses near the full moon when he’s exhausted and annoyed. James curses in serious scenarios, when he’s upset or scared or whatever. But Sirius curses fluently, happily, and with gusto haha.

For James, he’s a bit more lighthearted/frivolous in his language choices. Lots of play on words and always ending things sort of trailing off with “and all that.”

Lily I genuinely don’t have a good answer, I’m sure I did character work on her at some point but these days she just exists in my head as a fully-formed person so I have no idea how to tease that apart 🙈

Ummmm I’m drawing a blank on the others but i know they have specific tells, I’m just sleepy. 😂

Plots and subplots are I think just the result of my brain constantly playing a game of “yes and” with itself. (By which I am referring to the improv technique and not the Ariana grande song lmao.) Pretty much the entire plot of TLE was born from me having a handful of completely unrelated scenes/headcanons that had lived in my head since my teen years, then putting those random scenes in a timeline and trying to make sense of how one could lead to the other etc. And just like…allowing myself to go a little crazy and be like “ok I want a scene where Lily dresses in a Muggle mini-dress in front of James, why would this happen” and then extrapolating from there. Ok so the scene in which she’s wearing a mini-dress needs to be at least somewhat scandalous to warrant the kind of attention I want it to get from James and others? Why is it scandalous? Maybe it’s scandalous because wizards are super conservative. Ok if wizards are super conservative what does that means in terms of how they view Muggles, specifically Muggle girls? It means they’re constantly slut-shaming them. If they’re constantly slut-shaming Muggle girls, how does that show up in Lily’s plot? She gets accused of being a boyfriend stealer. Etc etc etc. So much of the plot so far has been me working backwards from ideas that won’t happen for many thousands of words yet to come 😂😂😂

I guess my biggest tip is just to make time to be very bored and let your brain roam free. Walking is great for this 😂

i've been following syonr for quite some time now (read: caught up and religiously check updates on mondays) and i actually don't remember if i ever left a comment or just repeated the words in my head enough times i forgot to say them. which is a shame, because you deserve many many warm words for the world you created.

the way you pace the story is SOO good. every arc has delicious hurt/comfort, just enough tension to make you sit on the edge of your seat and the characters???? can we just talk about how your characterization is THE characterization in this fandom? every single character is fleshed out and has a role, they! are! written! with! LOVE! and i love them with all my heart.

i think you were the one who made mu qingfang my comfort character. i really liked him, but you just planted him straight into my soul. he's my pookie now. the best man. should be in every fic for real. you can guess how much i loved when sy lived with him and i adore every scene with him. just thinking about it fill me with warmth. also i generally headcanon mqf as aroace, but here??? yes, he and wqw are a perfect match. no one does it like them ❣️

i have this weird thing where i can't fully imagine what i'm reading and it's like i don't see stuff in my head but more like i sense it? feel it? sometimes i read a fic and it's beautifully written, but i feel uncomfortable just because it feels tight and grimy even if the story itself is light.

but syonr feels spacious, like i can breath fully and what i imagine matches with what is actually happening in the scene. i might be anxious out of my mind but i still enjoy every bit of it. the places you describe fit perfectly into the story. that is to say, my favourite/comfort scenes are bright and sunny :D

i'm not gonna lie i enjoy sy whump. this guy can be in so many Situations and i'm here for it.

and i ADORE bingyuan. they are so sweet and cute and SAFE for each other. it's really interesting how their opinion on sqq changed bc they have each other. sy needing security and validation and binghe's cold disdain.

there actually should be like 10 hours video essay on every syonr character ii i- cant they are wonderful.

ok ok imma. imma pull myself together and give every word the attention it deserves. *sniffles* I'm not the best at replying to comments in general, because I don't know how to accurately relay how much they mean to me. but. let's do this.

I'm so, so happy to hear all this.

syonr is definitely a love project at this point, for myself and aimed at svsss and also just storytelling in general. As someone who used to only write oneshots or shortfics, it's so fun to really, truly linger and dwell in this story as I explore it. It's freeing in a way that writing hasn't been for me in many years. And I'm so, so happy you think so too. Describing it as "spacious" is a compliment I didn't know I needed, and I love it.

MQF has been fun to explore, because he's a soft but firm character. The one in charge of keeping his sect siblings in some kind of good health- which is of course very difficult because cultivators are insane and they become more nuts the more powerful they are- and then I have had a fun time having him just. Being around SY as SY struggled with basically everything. I've also been delighted to figure out how to write WQW, as he barely says anything in canon, and I'm so happy you also agree he's a hottie. RIP to SY, but I will highfive MQF for getting the hottest man in his generation as his boyfriend. It is very funny to me that they're probably the healthiest relationship in syonr of all time, even as they keep giving SY jumpscares of the gay kind.

I also enjoy SY whump. This, uh, this might be obvious, considering what he has gone through so far. *looks at him* I planned the demon invasion for so long. Fucking up his hands was The Plan all along. Fucking up his self-esteem and confidence was also it. WHUMP!!!

But of course, angst and whump can only truly hit if you line it with fluff. BingYuan is fun to explore in this setting. I like having them be same age and all that comes with it. So much can change in a story if you just swap some things around! They're soft and gooey and idiots <3

When I first decided to let NYY play a bigger part in the story, I was nervous. Canon barely gives her anything, fanon goes in two very different directions with her and neither felt right. She's spoiled and sheltered, but always well-meaning, and I wanted very much to explore writing her in all her oblivious glory while also letting her be Pure Distilled Teenage Girl trying to figure herself out. I'm always, always so happy when people tell me they love her in syonr. It's very rewarding. Not letting her be part of the story was just not possible, either! I'm just glad people appreciate her so much.

Lady Jia... hehehehe :D she always seems to strike a nerve, as intended. And it was so much fun reading the comments for that arc, everyone trying to figure out wtf was happening! Very proud of it to this day.

Part of the thing I love writing in syonr is, indeed, relationships. I mean the entire fic is kind of a love letter to it, both bad and good. It's part of why there's different povs. SQQ's pov and SY's pov are both extremely unreliable when it comes to others, as are anyone else's. I don't think there's a single character in svsss that I dislike, which is also why it's so fun to figure out how other characters think about each other. YQY and SQQ has completely different views of SY, and we all know Binghe's pov is 99% Loving On SY.

I just. You truly made my day today, thank you so much. syonr is one of those stories I'm having fun exploring, a story I look forward to finishing but I'm in no hurry to do so. And also, I suspect, a story I will struggle to not write oneshots for once it's over. (or even before that. I do have plans for a MQF/WQW fic set in it...)

first of all, i just love her mask and am permanently sad that she never gets to wear it again. bonus for foreshadowing face reveal a few episodes down the line and making her an incredibly ominous cryptid like presence kind of. i just think she’s neat. next is erina in ep.32:

honestly i was really tempted to use a frame from when she was xanu possessed cuz it looked real fuckin cool, but i think this one’s more meaningful. she’s sympathizing with sips for once instead of trying to one up him (at least after a bit) and realizing how tough shit must’ve been for him. agh they make me insane. next is sips from ep.15:

from right after he ate bou claire’s heart. the buildup narration to him looking into the mirror is, ,, agghhh. the fact this was used to promo merch is funny also.

now for q. 25: technically, my first impression of gothi was her getting sips to do karaoke while drunk (lol) and that being the catalyst for EVERYTHING (this campaign is the equivalent of a snowball rolling down a hill). but now, it was her kind of managing and trying to quell sips’ anger best she could along with erina.

erina was just a memelord to me lol. sips wasn’t in the best condition the first few episodes, so my first impression was just that he was a bottomless pit of rage. now looking at the early episodes feels like looking at alpha minecraft in comparison to 1.21, especially without xanu or abby. sneeze was just a little guy.

ok freebie question time. i’m gonna pick q. 22 even tho there hasn’t been a new fic at all on ao3 since i updated my own fic (which makes sense considering we’ve kinda already met the goal of the series even if there’s a lot of stuff on the horizon). and i’ll pick all 3 of them + xanu for this cuz. why not

sips: a lot of the fics on ao3 4 this fandom are oneshots, so there isn’t much they’re able to explore if they’re low word counts, but my dream sips-centric fic would be like. a collection of missed/deleted scenes from his early life and time in ammurin with a kind of dream/void/death motif. bonus points if he’s trans

erina: i haven’t seen ANYTHING about her early life in kylandria being the child of busy royal entertainers, hell even her weapons are like a carnival trick, so i’d really like to see a bit of early life stuff again. are you sensing a trend. also her just dealing with royalty is fun and i have many ideas

gothi: early life again. listen she was a whole ass princess who was allowed to exist only because of her rank she was under so much pressure all of the time, especially with being buddies with xanu. did she ever talk to another defective foreclaimer. who are her parents. did they love her. ugh. also, seeing her interact with vicky is something i haven’t really seen before, so that’d be fun.

xanu: listen. i feel like he’d be the hermit on the high mountain type never interacting with anyone like thanos after killing half the universe. also, i feel like a lot of aspects of his character get discarded in favor of making him easier to digest and write, which i’ve done, and this does not do him any service. i think making all the fools gold cast kind of,, mlp headcanon designified is also fun and i want to do it. also bonus vicky

Dear gods this got so long; putting it under a cut.

Not again. When the blue lightning reappeared; Zoom had Joe in a headlock not even ten feet from him. Not again. “Zoom— Jay—“ 

You probably noticed the repeating 'not again' s before Joe died; this is of course because Zoom killed Barry's dad a week ago and he's about to lose his other father figure :) . So 'not again' was just some narrative haunting and a way to reference that without making it too on-the-nose. I think it worked well. Barry also calls Zoom 'Jay' as he did with Henry's death in an attempt to appeal to his humanity (but that may just be a headcanon of mine).

“No, I don’t have to.” Barry looked to Zoom with a speck of hope. “When we first met as Zoom and The Flash; you asked me what I wanted from you.” Apprehension built with each word. “I told you: everything.” Fear gripped his heart as that hope crumbled to dust. 

Yes indeed, I repurposed the 'everything' line from Enter Zoom for my own evil deeds. It's obvious at this point but right now Barry is desperate. He's too injured too even move, let alone save Joe; so when Zoom says that first line, he's hoping against all odds and reason that Zoom may choose to spare Joe. But of course.

“Then kill me !” His voice blended to desperation around the final word.

I took a lot of inspiration from Henry's death scene for how Barry would act with Joe's. And of course he's going to beg for Zoom to kill him instead because 1. he's always going to sacrifice himself for others (as we see in chapter 1 when he really does try) and 2. he cannot lose anyone else; especially right now and oh boy...

“Barr, Barr look at me.” In that moment, he did as Joe asked, tears in both of their eyes as they locked gazes. “It’s gonna be ok, son. You’re going to be ok.” Barry shook his head. “Tell Iris—” Joe stared past him, towards the team. “—And Wally, tell them I love them, and that they can get through this. All of you will.” His voice trembled but Joe was resolute. 

This hurt me. I knew there was a few things to accomplish with Joe's last words and I think I hit all of them. First off, his priority was to comfort Barry as best he could, tell him he'll get through this but there's another layer to that. This entire fic came from a line in the season 2 finale that Zoom says to Joe while they're in Zoom's lair: "You know what's gonna be great, Detective? After I beat Barry in the race and prove that I'm the fastest man alive on any Earth, he's gonna rot in a cage just like the one Jay's in now." Since Joe knows what's going to happen to Barry (and I hc that Zoom told him a bit more in this universe) ; he's not just reassuring Barry that he'll get through him dying, but that he'll get through whatever happens next. And in turn; Joe is also telling himself that Barry can get out of Zoom's plan for him; that he'll be ok. And of course; he doesn't think Zoom's going to kill anyone else....

Barry didn’t respond, couldn’t respond— instead speaking again to Zoom. “Please don’t do this. Jay, please, please—” An attempt to get to his feet sent him crashing into the concrete and his eyes closed for a millisecond in pain before darting back up. “I’ll do whatever you want, just let him go.” 

One last desperate attempt; Barry tries to sell his soul to save Joe. He really doesn't care what happens to himself in this situation and I think this was a good way to emphasize that. Also; wouldn't that be an interesting AU if Zoom took him up on that offer?

The world stopped. Barry’s scream was the only sound in existence as Joe fell, almost in slow motion. He reached out, straining himself to get to him. “Joe!” Joe seized on the ground and Barry’s shouts increased. A few plea filled seconds; then Joe’s chest rose, fell, and his body stilled. “No, no, Joe!” Cold air entered Barry’s lungs. “Get up—” A crack in his voice. “Joe!” but Joe lay unmoving, glazed eyes toward the night sky. “No, no, not again—” not again, not again— 

After rewatching Henry's death, I discovered he didn't die right away and had an almost-seizure on the ground for a few seconds first. Since Joe died the same way (Zoom's an asshole for that and it was very intentional); that carried over nicely. Oh man, poor Barry; a few of these lines are taken directly from Henry's death and I think they worked well. Also-- did you notice the callback to the first scene of chapter 1? " Cold air entered Barry’s lungs. " I will abuse temperature symbolism till the day I die and you will see it again.

“I don’t think you realized, Barry—” That voice cut through his pain and he tore his eyes away from Joe, to Zoom, who was grinning over his fallen form. “Just how much you have to lose.”

Some of my favorite Zoom characterization from this, actually. Zoom is having a great time, everyone Barry loves is right here; metaphorically lined up for slaughter. Barry has so much and To Zoom (in this AU at least), it just gives him more to take. I've thought about this a lot actually; Zoom doesn't care about anyone. Caitlin briefly, but as we've seen in this and canon; not enough. He doesn't have anyone in his life because he just sees that kind of attachment as a weakness. (I could probably poke around and figure out where this connects to his childhood trauma but I'd need more braincells for that. Either way; that's just my interpretation.) So he sees Barry with all of these people he cares about so much-- and is just amused because Barry doesn't see it.

Iris struggled in Zoom’s hold, crying and trying to reach her father. “Dad! Dad no! Barry—” She finally whirled to him and he couldn’t find words.

So; the order of deaths. Tbh, this was the order in draft 1 and I didn't really want to change it BUT there is another reason. Joe was killed first because he's the one Zoom initially threatened so it seemed fitting; plus I didn't want to make him watch Iris die. I'm not a monster. Iris on the other hand... well, in the first draft she ran after Joe when Zoom took him so she was already nearby (changed this for a couple reasons). But in this draft the reason more boils down to killing the people closest to Barry. Start with his Henry; his last biological family member, then the people he grew up with, then his friends. And this also worked well with my method for this chapter. The intent was to give both Barry and the readers less and less time to process after each death; so Iris with the second most time seemed fitting.

“Iris— I’m sorry, I’m sorry—” Barry made eye contact with Zoom, desperate. “Please don’t hurt her, Jay please—” His eyes darted between Zoom, Iris, and Joe rapidly; tears still falling. “I’m begging you, please. Please, don’t do this.” Iris struggled more but Zoom’s hold on her was stronger. “Kill me instead!” Forcing her to face him, Zoom placed his hands on either side of Iris’ head as Barry shook his own. “Jay! Don’t! Please!” He made the mistake of meeting Iris’ terrified gaze. “Iris—” He couldn’t lose her. He couldn’t. 

For Iris' death; I rewatched her death in 3x22 a bunch of times and took inspiration from that. A lot of the Barry dialogue was quite similar to when Joe/Henry died; something I noticed is that those canon scenes actually did have some overlap. And oh man, poor Barry.

My thought with how Iris acted in this scene is that she's kind of in that grief shock; similar to when she didn't want to leave Eddie even when the singularity is getting rapidly stronger right next to them. By the time she processes the danger; it's too late.

“Iris?” She stilled immediately at Zoom’s feet, landing with the back of her head facing Barry. “Iris, Iris please look at me, please?” She’s not dead, she can’t be— “Iris!” But she didn’t move. Pressure built in his heaving chest, suffocating him. “Iris!” Tears fell with new meaning.  Zoom, hand dripping blood, crouched into his blurred vision and Barry’s shaking fists clenched as he pushed himself up. The smirking face of their killer replaced grief with pure, unfiltered fury. 

I knew Barry's reaction to be different enough from Joe's death and I think this worked really well (I tear up everytime). Really wanted to bring in that 'losing your childhood and current best friend AND someone you love' feeling all at once. He's really in that denial stage until he sees Zoom.

Cisco was on the ground and Caitlin kneeled beside him— Cisco was seizing. In his mix of emotions, he almost missed Harry being grabbed and deposited next to Iris and Joe. Barry whirled toward Harry but a scream— Caitlin’s— brought him back around. From a distance, he could make out Caitlin reaching for her left ankle, Zoom standing on it and saying something he couldn’t hear. No— no, this wasn’t happening—

SO. The question no one asked nor needed to know the answer to-- who screamed at the end of chapter 1? Cisco! Let's just say the multiverse being destroyed doesn't feel very great when you have dimensional powers... This part is also when it truly hits Barry that he's going to lose everyone. Zoom moves Harry to where he killed Iris and Joe, and injures Caitlin so she can't get away. And that's where this line comes in

“Jay, come on, please—” Something inside him already knew, knew that he couldn’t save any of his friends— I have to try.

My favorite Flash line; arguably a core of Barry himself; "I have to try". Knew I wanted to use that at some point and I hope this hit right.

And trailing back a second-- for Harry's last words; Jesse is his priority. He wanted to tell Barry that he's gratefully for everything he's done for her, and if Barry lives long enough to see her again; to tell her he loves her. This in part comes from Escape from Earth-2 when Harry tried to sacrifice himself to keep Zoom off Earth-1.

“Let go of me—” Caitlin struggled despite her injury, but to no avail. “Jay please—” 

For Caitlin, I thought it would make sense for her to plead with Zoom, like she has in the show before.

Barry pleaded at the same time. “Jay, stop! Just stop! You’ve done enough!” Hoarse but powerful anger found his voice. Barry looked from Caitlin, to the others, and back to Zoom. “Please, please, please stop—” Zoom fixed him with a wordless stare, his arms moved and Barry already knew what came next. “Caitlin—” The snap echoed in the air for a third time. She fell, to join the others.

This is still Barry, so of course he's still going to plead but in the moments before her death; he's truly lost hope. But again-- he has to try. He can't even find the words to say to her so like Iris; he just says her name before the end.

And gods, the idea to have the bodies just pile up in the same place; probably my most painful of all.

Barry turned, just in time to see the last remnants of a breach vanish— Cisco gone along with it. He’s ok. Even as Zoom zipped to the spot and stared at where his friend had just been, that one thought fueled him. Cisco’s ok.

Ah. So originally; I was just going to kill everyone. But then I thought this would be more fun. Fun fact: I did consider having both Cisco and Iris survive because frankly; they're my favorites. But once I planned more I realized there was only one way for this to go. Plus, Cisco surviving was a matter of chance, in a way. It wasn't "who do I want to live" but "who the fuck could escape" and Cisco happened to have the powers to do so. You'll see how this ends up going...

All his injuries came back into awareness at once, grief charging each one. Caitlin— The back of her head faced him. Her limbs splayed out unnaturally and left foot bent at the wrong angle. Harry— only the top of his head could be seen past Caitlin, leaving Barry a brief, horrible moment to remember a man with his friend’s face. He doubled over but each breath sent a dagger to his rib, the movement josling a broken leg, and fueling a compelling urge to vomit. Iris— Her head had rolled to face him; eyes remained open, horribly blank, and her mouth slightly agape. All wrong — Joe— In a pool of his own blood, positioned the same as before. Grief seeped through everything from the injuries to his mind, where sorrow took over in floods as the weight of his loss finally took its full effect— Until he was left sobbing and gasping on the ground from the sheer pain of it all. 

Oh poor poor Barry. Throughout this chapter, it's been one death onto the next and I've given him hardly anytime to process it-- but in this moment, the dust settles and he just falls apart. It hurts me and will only hurt more as things get worse.

He didn’t notice Zoom appear in front of him, couldn’t even acknowledge the presence of their killer. “And now you’re all mine.” The words had no time to register before a black blur and burst of pain sent him tumbling into darkness. As a last thought in a mind muddled by grief, Barry could only hope it would consume him entirely.

I am in love with this part because it works so perfectly to set up everything that is to come in multiple different ways. I shant say anything else about it because spoilers.

…ok I’m still very behind on Haikyuu, so I don’t know a whole lot about them yet… won’t stop me from making an attempt though XD Their friendship makes me happy 😊

When I think they became friends (if canon already hasn't showed how they became friends)

I’m kinda leaning toward them meeting at volleyball club in Noya’s first year of high school- simple as that, a libero and his ace bonding over their shared interests and becoming a powerful team together 😊 I have to wonder if maybe Noya was drawn to Asahi because he saw a bit of himself in the guy- from what I’ve heard, Noya himself was quite the anxious little guy when he was younger, so I can definitely see him wanting to be the kind of friend he needed back then 🥺 And with Noya’s friendly demeanor and his efforts to include Asahi in conversations and invite him to hang out on weekends, show interest in his other hobbies and nudge him out of his comfort zone and all that, it’s only natural that they’d grow closer and develop the strong bond they have now- I love how despite their age difference, they seem to treat each other as equals and look up to each other, it’s really sweet :’)

3. A random headcanon I have of them

Somehow I ended up with the headcanon that Noya is prone to headaches, and I just love the idea of Asahi being a good comfort to Noya when he’s not feeling well- gives him temple massages, makes sure he’s getting enough water to drink and all that :’) And one time, there was some construction taking place close to where Noya lives, and it was giving him headaches and making them harder to get rid of, so sometimes Asahi would let Noya stay over at his place where it was quieter and rest until he felt better- maybe he even cuddled with Noya until he fell asleep :’) I love the idea of Noya learning that cuddling has scientifically proven health benefits, and just latching onto that fact and constantly using it as an excuse because the dude LOVES him some cuddles XD

5. A scene I wish we had of them

…tfw I don’t know all their scenes yet XD But judging from these questions, I’m guessing canon hasn’t shown how they met, so I’d love to see that… but other than that? I love me a good hug scene, so I’ll go with that XD if they had a canon hug scene i probably would’ve seen dozens of redraws already lol

I just wanna see Noya make a running start and jump up to hug his buddy, and Asahi is standing there with his arms wrapped around Noya while his tiny little legs dangle off the ground XD That’d be so cute, lol

13. What I think would have happened if they never met

From what I’ve heard, they don’t seem to have *quite* as much of a deep fated connection as some other pairs in Haikyuu? Like, they’re in each other’s lives and they care a lot about each other but they’re not completely floundering on their own either :’D So I guess their friendship is kind of like that one post about double chocolate chip cookies- it may not be necessary for them to exist, but I sure wouldn’t want to live in a world without them! 😊💕💕 I suppose they’d be fine, but their lives just wouldn’t be as enriched as they could be? I mean, Noya does have other good buddies that he has a lot of fun with, but like… since he had more anxiety when he was younger, maybe Asahi would get him in a way that others might not, and if they’d never met, Noya might not have that connection with someone he could relate to in his life 😔 Same with Asahi- while he has other good friends in the volleyball club too, Noya seems to be the one he clicks with the most :’) And without him around, maybe it would’ve taken a bit longer for Asahi to come back to volleyball club- I just love how the reason Noya so adamantly refused to play without Asahi is because he didn’t want the guy thinking they could get by without him 🥺 It warms my heart how well Noya understands Asahi and how supportive he is of him!! Always pushing him to do his best because he knows he has it in him!! I’m just really glad they DID meet, because they have such a wonderful friendship and they make each other’s lives brighter… they are a package deal your honor 💛

Chapter Seven

I went from pity (foetal position) to admiration (voice resistance, "Look at me, do I look like someone who doesn't know everything there is to know about pain.") to revolt regarding Anastasia in the span of few pages. Favourite segment so far.

Also, was Anastasia projecting her own desires to revel in the suffering of others, was it an educated guess, or has Dr Nero actually been going to watch her in the flesh? The latter would kind of ruin the whole solitary confinement thing, but it would also make sense to want to have that kind of involvement in her capture given that she is intertwined with the whole Elena and my child situation

Please, please, please explain why block and tackle are being nice. PLEASE

Also it's kind of sad that Mr Walden clearly thought og h.i.v.e. fans had all stopped caring during the hiatus with all the little series recaps sprinkled in here. I know the other books aren't devoid of them, and i get why they have to exist, but it feels like there are a lot more in bloodline/they go on for longer

Since I'm pretty sure everyone but otto complained about the texture of the suit, I think I can headcanon him as being hyposensitive to touch. I know Laura doesn't complain in the scene, but she's not the one basically telling the others to suck it up

Oh how I love being proven right two for two (suit malfunction, although I did think it would be otto and wing dealing with that to mirror the beginning of the book)

Due to spoilers, I know it won't happen but canon divergence where Anna makes Laura kill shelby and then makes otto torture Laura to death seemingly by his own decision, and then manipulates things such that wing kills otto "to save him from what he's become".

Chapter Eleven

Oh so they commit self-destruct on the volcano. I honestly like that idea more than Anna destroying it

Does Mr Walden have cats? Because he's totally correct, they would manage to bring down armed killer robots single-handedly

I get that there's a lot going on, but considering hive is basically a prison to penny (meaning she has no particular loyalty to it) and Laura was "responsible" for the disaster during the hunt, I was expecting much more of a dramatic reuinion between those two

Interesting that both otto and wing have been confronted with a raven not acting by her own will + somebody threatening to shoot her and otto had the more opposing reaction, despite wing being closer to her in bloodline than otto was to her in zero hour. Obviously, otto had been through animus, but wing's aversion to killing balances that back out.

Incorrect answers only: why has shelby attempted to break into nero's office? What foiled her plans?

I will be able to form coherent thoughts about the rest of this chapter in two to three business days. For now, we read onwards

Chapter Twelve

Now, we all know that Mr Walden only has a character yell out no when an unfavourable event happens towards their love interest (I am hoping so hard right now that I'm correct and am not implying any weird relationships with this statement). So uhh Franz likes Nigel confirmed?

(Rereading this, I realise that otto lets out probably the longest "no" of the series in OP when wing is shot. They are very much just friends. But I'm stubborn, so Franz likes Nigel confirmed).

So diabolus "you don't need to know how something works in order to break it" darkdoom has more destruction potential than his son

Aaand penny wants to abandon her childhood friend who did nothing wrong to her, even in her pov, but is amicable towards Laura. Got it

Otto had already established that Anna would enslave the world, not destroy it, because it's what he would do. In his encounter with her, he basically asks what's the point in taking over a destroyed world. Even seeing what she can do, what she's like, he seems to view himself as worse than her. Ouch.

Not going to lie, I was expecting more of a battle akin to the one against number one/Overlord in escape velocity. How did the animus give otto the voice? If it's intrinsic to the stuff and it was Overlord manipulating it such that only he had its power, it kind of implies that it was developed via using some sinistre descendents, perhaps only loosely related, as lab rats in order to manufacture it to begin with

I'm curious as to what torture Raven inflicted that nero's only reaction was to rub his wrists from the restraints. She had medical equipment, not anything like water to board him with. It's canon that the man was screaming. Obviously he wouldn't want to show pain to Raven given the circumstances, but not even a limp? His shirt sticking to blood? Due to not wanting to ruin this segment for myself, I will headcanon that due to their closeness, she might have been able to fight anna/Anastasia just slightly, just enough to hold back. Nero figured this out, given how he'd know how she'd typically torture (which i believe is confirmed in deadlock), and played up his screams.

Chapter Thirteen

Straight off the bat, I know this is a catch-up with our protagonists chapter, and in full disclosure, I hate when pieces of media do this. I think it's better to leave it to the imagination where they end up. As such, I don't know how much I'll ever have to say here

Wait. Is that Franz liking Nigel (or at least guys) confirmed? Goddamn, I never thought Mr Walden would have the guts

And it's certainly an... interesting narrative choice to have Nero abandon the fact that he knows damn well when elena died to be a typical father who forgets his child's birthday

Even if shelby left glove behind, let's be honest, she's sneaking off to go get some jewels every now and again

And just know that I am internally laughing at the idea of Laura becoming Oxbridge

Chapter One:

OK, opening with a scene of Nero + brandy into a flashback sequence... very Overlord Protocol. Wonder if that was intentional and if the books may be linked.

Nero is younger than I thought. Much younger.

Clumsy Max. That's all I have to say. See, I thought it was as he was bending to kneel when the shot happened, not bending to retrieve a fallen ring. It's kind of sweet that it's the one time we've seen him display nerves. And it killed his (finace? Girlfriend? Does the proposal count?), generating a Never Again type of instinct and the birth of the max we know and love

KILL ANASTASIA, MAX... oh, you IDIOT. Suppose plot gotta plot, eh?

Dr Higgs... why is that name familiar? Glass tanks. Did he work on Otto back in the day?

Laura seems much more bold than any other book. It's interesting, given that Deadlock has literally just happened.

Chapter Two:

So Anna is Otto crossed with the Contessa. And the whole initial want to know stuff about her creator? Aka her "parents"? I'm sensing AU potential centred around a more human version of her, yearning for a family to find and slowly being driven into insanity/violence

Oh my god, max on holiday? It's him, he's being controlled by something.

I forget that Raven and diabolus are only friends/kind of close in fanfiction. I have no point to make here. It's just very jarring to read max saying to her that he'll do all the talking as though it's all a political battlefield.

Also, we should actually talk about max's daddy issues

Why is Franz a gym bro now? I suppose he inspired himself to try to attain his ninja alter ego via his newfound shooting skills. Still extremely out the blue. (Oooh, And They Were Study Buddies).

...That better not be the extent of Nigel's self-acceptance arc. Or else I'll have to dust off the old ffn account, and nobody wants that. Mr Walden, my guy, I'm counting on you.

Ouch, Zero really did just exist to be told "a copy is never as good as the original" and then to have his successor be even better than him.

Chapter Three

Excuse me, I know Otto points it out immediately, but Wing advocating for more aggression? Interesting. Makes sense in context- a simulation, in which he would have been the one getting hurt if they took a more aggressive approach. I wonder if that's going to come into play, perhaps the other way around, in a real situation?

OK, so we all already know what The Three oldest archons abilities. So I’ve come up with my own ideas we could use for the younger archons! (And yes I’m grouping Ei, Venti and Zhongli as the older siblings since Ei Is 1000 years old Venti is 2,500 and Zhongli is 5,000-6,000 and the other archons are still in the hundreds I think)

Definitely a Bow User. And Is a Healer. But the their Ult can cause damage

I have a theory That during the Archon War The dendro Archin created the Regisvines to fight for them, and only two were left. I also Headcanon The dendro archon can bring plants to life and overwrite what each plant can do. (Maybe even bring mushrooms to life 👀).

Maybe They can create a giant plant from the ground that spreads Healing energies and since this is a god where talking about can Cure Curses (Ahem Vils Curses Ahem) and major Diseases and what not.

For Their Ult maybe a giant plant monster (kinda like how Gouba and Oz exists ) that will attack for them (could make for fun combos with different elements like if the dendro archon was wet Hydro Plant monster)

For Hydro archon!reader

Polearm or sword (theirs way too many Hydro Catalyst) Healer and Dps, Why? Cause I say so.

You’ve mentioned how Hydro archon summons a giant wave? I’ll do you one better and their E skill summons a giant sea creature of your choosing to soak the fighters (A cool visual is their polearm turning into a big dream catcher then going swoosh and Baam Maybe like A giant Water Koi fish finna drown your ass *ahem ace ahem*)

Now mihoyo likes to reference Their character form honkai impact into genshin impact (and since they took a characters look from Honkai and another characters abilities with the whole Dual ego thing for Raiden shogun and Ei) I’m gonna base this Ultimate Skill From a character from Honkai (for research search up Herrsercher of Sentience)

Since the Hydro archons whole thing is about Justice. Now here me out here. WATER WHIP. Just a giant whip of water that can go on for miles (maybe it’s salty maybe it’s like fresh water depends on our readers mood lolol). Like, It’s whip of water strong enough to cut diamond or whatever it would be very cool (Kalim would wanna see if he could do something like that with his UM Que jamil trying to stop him)

Maybe their hair turns into water too.

Pyro archon! Reader

Claymore. A Big strong war god needs a big strong weapon. Dps and Defense.

Now It’s not just one claymore, It’s DUAL-CLAYMORE, why? Cause it’s a war god that’s why!

I like to think the shield is like Xinyans and XiangLings combined and it’s constantly sending off tiny Fire Discs. Or just symbols shooting fire like what the Pyro Abyss mages can do

For Ultimate I like to think it’s like Childes Daggers but Bigger and on fire just a huge sword made of fire.

I can’t really come up with much for Cryo archon. But maybe a Catalyst that can summon a giant blizzard that drops down giant ice swords (kinda like Ganyus)

Maybe a healer too since The Tsaritsa is The archon of love?

What do you think about these abilities? Since you mentioned that the students and staff would assume their just strong mages I tried to be very creative with these abilities.

Also how I think the lore could go is maybe somewhere after leonas overblot and before azuls, Crowly has found a way to send Yuu home reluctantly. Yuu, grim and the aduece duo, and maybe some of heartslaybul or savana claw whoever you want come with them to the office to send them home. But Yuu is contemplating whether or not they WANT to go home now. But something goes wrong, maybe grim messes up the spell for the portal to work becuase (although he doesn’t want to admit it ) doesn’t want Yuu leaving, and their greeted with a surprise guest. Now this gives Yuu time to decide if they genuinely wanna go home and when teh archon finally has the materials they need to create a portal Yuu will tell them to leave the portal open (maybe put it into a tiny pocket mirror like the how we have the teapot) because they wanna stay for a little while or just until grim graduates (Que a happy fire cat ) and the archon whose grown attached to some people here was like ok “let our friends visit whenever they want, only if their headmaster allows it”

Now onto the headcanons

Anemo Archon! Reader and Mondstadt! Yuu

Everyone expected a lot of things not a person with Green eyes and (H/C) hair with green highlights. And an odd thing about them was the glowing stone on their person, Yuu didn’t have that?

Everyone’s freaking out because they’ve accidentaly taken another person from Yuus world.

And since Venti Is a well known famous bard In teyvat let’s say or Dear (y/N) is also a known bard and is not at all freaking out about what’s going on in fact let’s say our dear reader recognizes Yuu! And so now (Y/N) is now a new student (and a new headache for Crowley) in the ramshackle dorm! Yup! Just an ordinary human bard, Ehe~.

I’ll leave the rest of this up to you, Where Yuu has to explain what the world of teyvat is like (and why Yuu doesn’t have a phone (and a vision) because Twisted wonderland is far more advance in Technology and teyvat has JUST invented the Camera)

Anyways, for skills of the archons-

Dendro Archon

I think they'd use a sword or a catalyst tbh, if the skills you listed, it makes a little more sense to have them be more of a catalyst

For their elemental skill, I think they'd summon/throw something similar to Klee's and Aloy's elemental skill except they heal if someone in your party is nearby, their healing could scale by their EM or ER.

For their burst, I like your head canon for the Dendro Archon, so I might go off from that and your idea for their burst, just more tweaking. The dendro archon would be able to summon a large plant that heals AND deals Dendro damage by sapping mobs hp. The amount of life sapping it does and the healing would scale off their original HP (artifacts that give hp won't be of use)

Hydro Archon

I agree with hydro polearm or sword. Too many catalysts

Mmm... To be honest, I think you should have the burst be her skill... The whip idea is intriguing, but I think it would work more for a skill which can allow them to use it several times before waiting for the CD to go down. I think the whip skill would work better with Crit as well.

AND AS FOR THE MENTIONS OF WAVE AND A SEA CREATURE, I'LL DO YOU ONE BETTER BUT FOR THEIR BURST!!!! They summon a large tsunami which takes form of a monster/animal and lunges at the mobs (similar to Zhongli tossing down a dumbbell), however the amount of damage the burst can do is depending on if they are afflicted by the wet status the mobs are afflicted by. If already afflicted with hydro, the mobs would receive double damage while those with other elements afflicted on them would receive the element combination DMG and normal DMG while those that aren't affected by an element, they would receive normal damage. The amount of damage the burst does is scaled by EM.

Pyro Archon

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA CLAYMORE

Hmmm.... I think the skill would be they set an AoE with magma, mobs will receive damage from it and will continue to receive damage if they stay on it, but those who are in party, they will receive an ATK boost that scales from HP.

For the burst, I think I'll use a character from Honkai Impact with their special move which is Murata Himeko in Vermilion Knight: Eclipse battlesuit. Pyro Archon uses their claymore and another claymore but made of pyro and is far more larger and their cut scene has the Archon raise the pyro claymore above their head and slam it down to send pyro erupting from the ground (similar to the pyro axe wielding hilichurls)

Cryo Archon

I agree with catalyst

Mmmmmm.... I'd say her skill would beeeeee... Trapping several mobs or so in ice. They can either do 2-4 ice traps depending if you got their c1. (The ice traps are similar to Mirror Maidens traps BTW but it deals or affects the mobs with cryo)

For burst, I like the idea of summoning a blizzard/swords, but it's similar to Ganyu's. SO I'LL DO YOU ONE BETTER!!!! Cryo Archon will summon a blizzard which freezes mobs without having to use hydro, the freeze status lasts for a total of 15 seconds or higher if you got their c3

Hmmm... I like the idea, but imma tweak it a bit. The archon was in fact summoned through that portal because Grim decided to mess it up just for Yuu to stay a little longer, and so the Archon now resides in Twisted Wonderland as well in order to aide them until they can return back to their world. That way it makes more sense and makes it more fun.

Uh oh I’m talking more about timeline stuff but some time after the events of the big showdown and they’re dealing with the fact that Chuck is deciding to stay here on earth, Papa G and The Kid make him his own living space there in the junkyard with them. Not sure where or what it’d look like but it means a lot to Chuck (makes this face -> 🥺) I’d imagine since his species aren’t given their own names / have individuality he wasn’t given a space of his own to do whatever he wanted with

Since they no longer have the rings, Chuck helps Papa G as an extra hand doing work in the yard (Papa G had to get used to doing stuff without being his own company :[ ) and Chuck ACTUALLY LOVES HELPING imagine that one scene where Papa G and Chuck are working together to build the ice cream megaphone truck, they’re both really skilled at building stuff and enjoy it so it’s like that pretty often!

I swear to god Papa G needs to get Chuck a wheelchair / make him one, I want to believe that he does have one and we just didn’t see it at the end of the time skip -_- :prayer: but they totally deck it the hell out (you KNOW Papa G is capable of making deadly death machines and you KNOW Chuck would absolutely love that sh*t!!!!)

Anyway back to the time skip relationship development thing: PAPA G SHOWS CHUCK AROUND HIS HOUSE I wish we knew what inside the house looked like besides the kitchen sink lol but Papa G figured if he’s gonna be around here more often he might as well show him where HE lives! Papa G is SUPER excitedly showing him all the weird stuff he’s accumulated over his lifetime. Chuck doesn’t Get the specialness of physical possessions and calls it Junk but Papa G doesn’t mind! He shows things and Chuck is confused about certain things (being an Alien) and Papa G is happy to explain everything to him.

Papa G shares Chuck his art and is showing him painting ;_; once again Chuck is a bastard and doesn’t totally get it. Papa G would definitely call HIM an artist, pointing out that all the building that Chuck does is artwork, those comics that he spent all that time reading was him appreciating the art, and that changes the way he views it. Chuck makes his own dam comics, I’d imagine the way he’d draw is very unique and the text is written in his language, and then it’s Papa G who doesn’t totally get it but is ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT IT!!!

Also Papa G totally takes Chuck out to the middle of nowhere to go look for junk, this is probably Chuck’s Least Favourite Activity LOL but they do spend a lot of time talking about anything, I’m really curious about what the kind of things they’d even say when they’re not faced with any threat and are only with each other *looks up at the sky in thought..*

Chuck please go off about your previous life away from earth I feel like as soon as he came here he kinda just accepted himself being Stuck Chuck and therefore had no attachment to being a nameless body in an alien army. Also Papa G please open up about your messed up secret history that warranted the government keeping tabs on you and made you live almost completely isolated.

See^ I think whatever they got going on on a DEEP LEVEL could be wild and would have so much to unravel, Chuck’s life before this was probably just 90% seeing various people DIE and was simply made to Kill people for his leader. And. you KNOW Papa G has something Messed Up about him + Is Traumatized / got “bad flashbacks” + the whole seeing himself die and being numb to it. And now that they are people who are trying to save lives on their team they could Relate to each other as the two older guys with UNKNOWN HISTORY!!!!

I’m just really confused as to where this idea that Zuko is gaycoded came from. Like people are allowed to have that headcanon but I don’t understand where people are coming from when they try and claim that he was undisputedly gaycoded and trying to deny it is homophobic when he’s only ever shown romantic interest in women.

I made a pretty long post on the topic a while back, but the ultimate gist of it is this: there are a lot of elements of Zuko's status as an abuse victim and trauma survivor that resonate with queer folks. This is understandable and completely fine! However, there are some parts of the fandom who have taken that to the other extreme and will now insist that those elements are uniquely queer, and that they can only be read as some sort of veiled gay/coming out narrative, even though that doesn't make much sense since there is no part of Zuko's narrative which is unique to any sort of queer experience.

I think the problem really does stem from two things being conflated--Zuko's history of abuse and trauma, and trauma&abuse being something a lot of queer people have experienced. I suspect it goes something like 'I see a lot of myself in Zuko, and I was abused for being gay, therefore Zuko must be gay too in order to have had similar experiences.' This can then lead to feeling dismissed or invalidated when other people point out that those experiences are not unique to being queer--but on the flip side, abuse victims and trauma survivors whose abuse&trauma do not stem from queerness (even if they are queer themselves) can feel invalidated and dismissed by the implication that their trauma must be connected to their queerness or it isn't valid.

This is also where the 'people don't actually know what gay coded means' part comes in, and I realize now that I didn't actually get into what gay coding (and queer coding in general) actually means, since I was so hung up on pointing out how Zuko doesn't really fit the mold. (And the few elements that exist which could be said to count are because of the 'villains historically get queer coded bc Hays Code era' thing and mostly occur in Book 1, not because of how he acts as an abuse&trauma survivor.)

Under a cut because I kind of go on a tangent about gay/queer coding, but I swear I get back to the point eventually.

Queer coding (and it is notable that, with respect to Zuko, it is almost always framed as 'he couldn't possibly be attracted to girls', rather than 'he could be attracted to boys as well as girls' in these discussions, for... no real discernible reason, but I'll get into that in a bit) is the practice of giving characters 'stereotypically queer' traits and characteristics to 'slide them under the radar' in an era where having explicitly queer characters on screen was not allowed, unless they were evil or otherwise narratively punished for their queerness. (See: the extant history of villains being queer-coded, because if they were Evil then it was ok to make them 'look gay', since the story wasn't going to be rewarding their queerness and making audiences think it was in any way OK.) This is thanks to the Motion Picture Production Code (colloquially and more popularly known as the Hays Code), which was a set of guidelines which movies coming out of any major studio had to adhere to in order to be slated for public release and lasted from the early 1930s until it was finally abandoned in the late 60s.

The Hays Code essentially existed to ensure that the content of major motion pictures would not 'lower the moral standards' of the viewing public. It didn't just have to do with queerness--cursing was heavily monitored, sex outside of marriage was not allowed to be seen as desirable or tittilating, miscegenation was not allowed (most specifically interracial relationships between black and white people), criminals had to be punished lest the audience think that it was ok to be gay and do crime, etc. Since same-sex relations fell under 'sexual perversion', they could not be shown unless the 'perversion' were punished in some way. (This is also the origin of the Bury Your Gays trope, another term that is widely misunderstood and misapplied today.) To get around this, queer coding became the practice by which movies and television could depict queer people but not really, and it also became customary to give villains this coding even more overtly, since they would get punished by the end of the film or series anyway and there was nothing to lose by making them flamboyant and racy/overly sexual/promiscuous.

Over time, this practice of making villains flamboyant, sexually aggressive, &etc became somewhat separated from its origins in queer coding, by which I mean that these traits and tropes became the go-to for villains even when the creator had no real intention of making them seem queer. This is how you generally get unintentional queer-coding--because these traits that have been given to villains for decades have roots in coding, but people tend to go right to them when it comes to creating their villains without considering where they came from.

Even after the Hays Code was abandoned, the sentiments and practices remained. Having queer characters who weren't punished by the narrative for being queer was exceptionally rare, and it really isn't until the last fifteen or so years that we've seen any pushback against that. Buffy the Vampire Slayer is famous for being one of the first shows on primetime television to feature an explicitly gay relationship on-screen, and that relationship ended in one of the most painful instances of Bury Your Gays that I have ever personally witnessed. (Something that, fourteen years later, The 100 would visually and textually reference with Lexa's death. Getting hit by a bullet intended for someone else after a night of finally getting to be happy and have sex with her s/o? It wasn't remotely subtle. I don't even like Clexa, but that was incredibly rough to witness.)

However, bringing this back to Zuko, he really doesn't fit the criteria for queer coding for a number of reasons. First of all, no one behind the scenes (mostly a bunch of cishet men) was at all intending to include queer rep in the show. This wasn't a case where they were like 'well, we really wanted to make Zuko gay, but we couldn't get that past the censors, so here are a few winks and a nudge', because it just wasn't on their radar at all. Which makes sense--it wasn't on most radars in that era of children's programming. This isn't really an indictment, it's just a fact of the time--in the mid/late 00s, no one was really thinking about putting queer characters in children's cartoons. People were barely beginning to include them in more teen- and adult-oriented television and movies. It just wasn't something that a couple of straight men, who were creating a fantasy series aimed at young kids, were going to think about.

What few instances you can point to from the series where Zuko might be considered to exhibit coding largely happen in Book 1, when he was a villain, because the writers were drawing from typically villainous traits that had historically come from queer coding villains and had since passed into common usage as villainous traits. But they weren't done with any intention of making it seem like Zuko might be attracted to boys.

And, again, what people actually point to as 'evidence' of Zuko being queer-coded--his awkwardness on his date with Jin and his confrontation with Ozai being the big ones I can think of off the top of my head--are actually just... traits that come from his history of trauma and abuse.

As I said in that old post:

making [zuko’s confrontation of ozai] about zuko being gay and rejecting ozai’s homophobia, rather than zuko learning fundamental truths about the world and about his home and about how there was something deeply wrong with his nation that needed to be fixed in order for the world to heal (and, no, ‘homophobia’ is not the answer to ‘what is wrong with the fire nation’, i’m still fucking pissed at bryke about that), misses the entire point of his character arc. this is the culmination of zuko realizing that he should never have had to earn his father’s love, because that should have been unconditional from the start. this is zuko realizing that he was not at fault for his father’s abuse--that speaking out of turn in a war meeting in no way justified fighting a duel with a child.

is that first realization (that a parent’s love should be unconditional, and if it isn’t, then that is the parent’s fault and not the child’s) something that queer kids in homophobic households/families can relate to? of course it is. but it’s also something that every other abused kid, straight kids and even queer kids who were abused for other reasons before they even knew they were anything other than cishet, can relate to as well. in that respect, it is not a uniquely queer experience, nor is it a uniquely queer story, and zuko not being attracted to girls (which is what a lot of it seems to boil down to, at the end of the day--cutting down zuko’s potential ships so that only zukka and a few far more niche ships are left standing) is not necessary to his character arc. nor does it particularly make sense.

And, regarding his date with Jin:

(and before anyone brings up his date with jin--a) he enjoyed it when she kissed him, and b) he was a traumatized, abused child going out on a first date. of course he was fucking awkward. have you ever met a teenage boy????)

Zuko is socially awkward and maladjusted because he was abused by his father as a child and has trouble relating to people as a result. He was heavily traumatized and brutally physically injured as a teenager, and it took him years to begin to truly recover from the scars that left on his psyche (and it's highly likely, despite the strides he made in canon, that he has a long way to go, post series; it's such a pity that we never got any continuation comics >.>). He was not abused for being gay or queer--he was abused because his father believed he was weak, and part of Zuko's journey was realizing that his father's perception of strength was flawed at its core. That his entire nation had rotted from the inside out, and the regime needed to be changed in order for the world--including his people--to begin to heal.

That could be commingled with a coming out narrative, which is completely fine for headcanons (although I personally prefer not to, because, again, we have more than enough queer trauma already), but it simply doesn't exist in canon. Zuko was not abused or traumatized for being queer, and his confrontation with Ozai was not about him coming out or realizing any fundamental truth about himself--it was about realizing something fundamental about his father and his nation, and making the choice to leave them behind so that he could help the Avatar grow stronger and force things to change when he got back.

TL;DR: at the end of the day, none of the traits, scenes, or behavior Zuko exhibits which shippers tend to use to claim he was gay-coded are actually evidence of coding--they aren't uniquely queer experiences, as they stem from abuse that was not related in any way to his sexuality, and they are experiences that any kid who suffered similar abuse or trauma could recognize and resonate with. (Including straight kids, and queer kids who were abused for any reason other than their identity.) And, finally, Zuko can be queer without erasing or invalidating his canon attraction to girls, and it's endlessly frustrating that the 'Zuko is gay-coded' crowd refuses to acknowledge that.

Hello! I thought I might ask something about worldbuilding. You've mentioned beds for the Valar, and sleeping as well, so do you have any thoughts on like... how much they need to sleep, if it does anything for them that it does not do for elves/men, etc? I hope this isn't too vague or anything!

We only have sparse examples of textual evidence regarding the Valar and sleeping!

Namely, the scene where Tulkas and Nessa wed during the spring of Arda and Tulkas falls asleep. Now Tulkas is in many ways slightly different than the other Valar. He doesn’t have as clear a domain as them and he of course came later, separated from the others in the mind of Eru. So one could make the argument that his sleep is the result of having a more physical existence than some of the others

It’s also worth noting that both this and the other notable instance of sleep of a Vala, that is, Lúthien enchanting Melkor to sleep, involve dancing! Nessa dances in her joy at the wedding and at the Spring and Tulkas falls asleep watching her, feeling content and at peace and then Melkor, who is already in a reduced form due to the injuries from the Silmarils, and thus trapped in a physical form, falls asleep watching Lúthien.

It’s twelve in the morning when I’m writing this so I’m not as analytical as I’d like but I do think this is an interesting connection and likely related to the role that music plays in the powers of Arda and of Eä. I imagine that Melkor’s potential taunting of Tulkas regarding his falling asleep before Melkor destroys the lamps becomes significantly less satisfying after this incident

(also just imagine you get married and are so happy and at peace with the world that you fall asleep and then when you wake up you find that your arch nemesis has not only broken into your house and wrecked the place but also managed to cause a continent wide blackout...talk about crashing a wedding...)

Now onto my personal headcanons! I think what the Valar do is closer to recover and recuperate when necessary meditation than sleep. They are not originally physical beings and so sleep in the way that humans do, for them can provide relief to the physical forms they wear but isn’t vital as it is for humans and also will not provide the rest they actually need. The most important time for rest for them is in between changing physical forms. They will enter an almost trance like state where their physical form appears to fade away.

You say that like she's a bad person, she's really not. The curse she placed on Eda wasn't intended to be permanent and probably wasn't even supposed to take the effects that it did. She also feels guilty enough about it to throw herself into an abusive situation and spend almost her whole life trying to make up for it. Lastly, yes she hurt Luz, but let's not forget that Belos threatened her life upon Eda's capture and Lilith was running out of time and had no other option. No one is making Eda out to be the villain either, the only example I can find of this is a few fanfics where she treats Lilith a lot more harshly than she should, and even then, scenes like that are written in a positive light as if you're supposed to be on Eda's side, so with that in mind, the writers of these fics are clearly not even Lilith stans. In terms of how actual stans treat Eda, the worst they do is make her slightly ignorant of Lilith's trauma, kinda like the fandom, minus the "slightly", until she grows as a character and learns to see the red flags. If that's the problem you're talking about, then breaking news: Eda's not perfect either. She has flaws too just like literally everyone else in the show and people are allowed to write about them

There is far more Eda angst out there than there is for Lilith, where are you finding so much Lilith angst? LILITH is the one who's traumas are being ignored while Eda's gets all the attention. No one is saying that Lilith has worse trauma, we're only saying that her's is also severe and that it definitely exists.
