#this same shit happened with Cowboy Bebop and Death Note
Text
They need to stop making live action versions of anime!! my 63 year old dad just got me into fucking one piece!! He started watching it bc he liked the giant fish on the picture and thought that perhaps it was about fishing but now he’s absorbed into the lore!! Fuck you Netflix for getting my dad (and by extension me) into One Piece I’m coming for you fr

not to wear a tin foil hat here
but im almost convinced These People are doing this shit on purpose
they know what they are doing is bad and the audience won't like it, and yet they slap some diversity so that Those Fans associate it to a bad show
it happened to Netflix death note, cowboy Bebop and now i'm feeling the same vibe for lotr
Those Fans won't understand the show is bad AND has diversity. They will definitely think the show is bad BECAUSE of diversity
Bezos I hate you

My Review of Trigun
Tumblr media
How did I get into this anime? Let’s just say this was one of those animes that used to air on Saturday nights back in the day that I would every now and then come across while waiting for either Full Metal Alchemist, InuYasha, or Cowboy Bebop to air. But I never did watch a full episode or know a damn thing about this anime. So I’m just jumping into this anime blindfolded. All I know is that this was Johnny Yong Bosch’s first anime role.
Tumblr media
Who is Vash the Stampede?
A frequent question that comes up throughout the series! Rumor has it that he wears a long, red trench coat and sports a Mohawk hairstyle. Some say he’s a notorious lecher. Many recount him shooting up their villages to a pile of rubble just for the heck of it. He has quite the reputation as he has a $$60,000,000,000 bounty on his head and is often known as the “Humanoid Typhoon”.
Tumblr media
In reality, Vash the Stampede is…a bit of a dingus. He just happens to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and things kinda get out of hand. But that doesn’t stop two insurance agents (Milly Thompson and Meryl Stryfe) from following him around to confirm Vash’s identity and keep his actions to a minimum. At first, it’s hard to tell if he’s a stupid-genius or just flighty and gets lucky one too many times. But when shit goes down, don’t be surprised when you see this doofus get serious.
BETWEEN THE SUB AND THE DUB: Okay, what sad company did this use to belong to, Geneon, Bandai, or ADV Films? Oh, Geneon! That means good voice actors from L.A. put in really shitty roles. On the contrary, this was a fairly decent English dub. And on a severely positive note, this was indeed Johnny Yong Bosch’s very first anime role (and a main role at that). This was like fresh off his time as a Power Ranger! And I gotta give props for giving this guy a chance at voice acting. This role was the launching point to what has been a very successful career for Bosch. As for the sub, let’s just say I’m happy any time I get to hear Hiromi Tsuru in something besides Dragon Ball. Here’s what you might recognize these folks from.
JAPANESE CAST: *Vash is played by Masaya Onosaka (known for Bill on Pokemon, Isaac on Baccano, Jadeite on Sailor Moon, Kero on Cardcaptor Sakura, Leeron on Gurren Lagann, France on Hetalia, and Spandam on One Piece)
*Meryl is played by Hiromi Tsuru (known for Bulma on DBZ, Ukyo on Ranma ½, Yubel on YGO GX, and Mika on Gravitation) [R.I.P.]
*Milly is played by Satsuki Yukino (known for Kagome on InuYasha, Mion/Shion on Higurashi, Tae on Gintama, Amakata on Free!, Hiiragi on Natsume Yuujinchou, Mutsumi on Love Hina, and Yoruichi on Bleach)
ENGLISH CAST: *Vash is played by Johnny Yong Bosch (known for Ichigo on Bleach, Lelouch on Code Geass, Makoto on Free!, Izaya on Durarara, Artemis on Sailor Moon redub, Koizumi on Haruhi Suzumiya, and Yukio on Blue Exorcist)
*Meryl is played by Dorothy Elias-Fahn (known for Kaoru on Rurouni Kenshin, Naru on Love Hina, Tomoe on Rozen Maiden, Hakuei on Magi, Houki on Fushigi Yugi, and Amane on Tenchi Muyo GXP)
*Milly is played by Lia Sargent (known for Dorothy on The Big O and Judy on Cowboy Bebop)
Tumblr media
FAVORITE CHARACTER: Milly! I don’t need a reason, it’s Milly!
SHIPPING: I didn’t really start thinking about shipping until more than halfway into this series. I thought there might be something between Vash and Meryl, but then again maybe not! Then I saw the backstory of Vash’s “younger days” and falling for the one woman who showed him compassion.
Tumblr media
Yes, this is the same woman we consistently see in Vash’s flashbacks, Rem. Ooh boy, it’s one of those stories! So yeah, never mind my thinking with Vash x Meryl ever happening. I feel like Vash will mourn Rem’s death for a long time that I don’t think the whole thing with Meryl will ever work.
Tumblr media
And as for Wolfwood x Milly…
FUUUUUUUCK! WHY DID YOU RUIN THIS CUTE COUPLE?!
MILLY WAS HEART-BROKEN!
…At least she got to have one night of passion with Wolfy-boy before the unthinkable happened.
Tumblr media
THAT DARN CAT: If you watched this series, you might have noticed a little black cat spotted in nearly every episode. It’s there in the opening theme. It’s there in random places throughout the series. It’s there in the ending theme. What’s up with this cat? Well, there are a lot of theories surrounding this particular cat (or Kuroneko). Some say it’s really Rem inside that cat since you see it in literally every episode around Vash. Others say it’s because the creator of Trigun wanted to just mess with your minds with the kitty walking around in random places and towns. Seriously, it will always appear in every new town Vash and the gang comes across! As an avid cat enthusiast, I’m fine with whatever the result. Just as long as no harm comes to the little Kuroneko.
HALFWAY POINT: Halfway into the series we notice something more when it comes to Mr. Vash the Stampede. First of all, those horrifying scars all over his body! Second, that mysterious girl he often thinks about. I mean, we see flashes of her in the opening sequence. And third, the reason why he never kills. Vash has the ability of causing so much damage when pushed to a breaking point. One of the many reasons why he’s known as the “humanoid typhoon”! And that was perfectly shown when Vash chases the residents out of a town (so there would be no casualties), totally demolished the town during a fight, and made an indent on the moon!
Tumblr media
But the story takes a sharp-left turn into WTF territory when we learn about WHAT exactly Vash is. Vash is a plant. Vash also has a brother named Knives. And while Vash has a mentality that all beings have a right to live, Knives has a “kill them all and let God sort them out” point of view. Now the existence of Vash and Knives came with a lot of controversy, especially in the ship that they were on. But that girl who Vash cares for, Rem cared for them regardless of what they were. Rem had high hopes for a peaceful world with coexistence. Too bad Knives had other motives and killed her.
ENDING TO TV SERIES: Vash has tried so hard to keep Milly, Meryl, and Wolfwood out of harm’s way. He knows there are some pretty bad people after him, including his polar-opposite brother, Knives. Vash hates death and wants to save as many people as humanly possible. He doesn’t want to see any more needless death. Probably from his flashbacks and losing Rem! Unfortunately, this doesn’t go so well.
Tumblr media
I can see how iconic this death was now after witnessing it. Wolfwood, the priest who would hook up with Vash every now and then when they’re up against some ruffians, now finds himself in a crucial decision. He gets orders that he must eliminate Vash. And Wolfwood ends up dying instead in a very dramatic death scene. God-damn! And just that scene where Milly is sobbing freakin’ eats you up inside.
At least she had one night of passion before the unfortunate happened!
Tumblr media
Vash hates the thought of having to kill anyone. But he might not have a choice if Knives is coming after him and even hires a powerful foe from a previous episode and the guy that killed Wolfwood to take you out. Once Vash met up with Knives, he winds up having some pretty sick flashbacks of Knives. But our homeboy was able to take out Knives, the desert area gets water, and…
I’m gonna have to read the fucking manga for more, right?
Tap dancing fuck!
Tumblr media
BADLANDS RUMBLE: 12 years after the series ended, Japan decides to release a side-story in the form of a movie, bringing back our favorite characters like Vash, Wolfwood, Milly, and Meryl. And yes, reuniting the cast…in Japan.
By 2010, Geneon was as good as dead and FUNimation licensed Trigun. In short, they managed to get Johnny Young Bosch to reprise his role as Vash the Stampede. But everyone else was replaced. And surprisingly, the people they got to do Wolfwood and Milly were pretty freakin’ close to their original voices. Meryl’s voice, come on I know Luci Christian any-damn-where! Vash helps a young lady take out a big-bad guy (who turns out to be his father). And it has the feel of the original series where it’s set in a western town with lots of booze and shoot-em-ups! It’s an interesting side-story to the Trigun trilogy.
Trigun was a pretty good anime. I mean, not one of my favorites, but I can definitely see a lot of people sticking by this classic. Maybe you can chalk up my blah attitude to the fact that I’m not fond of westerns and I kinda took it out on Trigun. Or the fact that there was so much more that the anime could have covered before the end and the ending kinda felt off to me! Like I thought I was expecting more. But I suppose that’s what mangas are for. To be honest, the stories that really grabbed my attention were the back-stories with Vash and Knives and Wolfwood’s final episode.
*sniffles* At least Milly got one night of passion before he died!
If you would like to check out Trigun, all the episodes are available through FUNimation and Hulu (in both Japanese and English). And if you really like the anime, why not purchase the hard copies? Both the series and movie are available for home video.
Okay, that took me a while, but I’m glad to finish Trigun. What’s next on the FUNimation list?
Tumblr media
EEHHHHHEEEHHHE
Fuck is that supposed to mean? What is that? Is that even in English?
Tumblr media
YOU WILL BE HORRIBLY MUTILATED: The Isekai
Do you mean Re:Zero? That’s great…but that review’s not ready yet. And it probably won’t be until after April 2021! So let’s cast caution to the wind and pick another FUNimation licensed anime.
You’re watching Sarazanmai next. It’s best if you don’t ask questions.
Sarazanmai? The fuck does that even mean?!
Tumblr media
OH. MY. GOD.

The first KyoAni series I watched was back in 2006.
I was just starting high school at the time and was also just getting into watching anime. Til then I had just watched whatever they had on YTV (a Canadian channel), you know, Pokemon, Sailor Moon, Digimon, Yu-Gi-Oh! all the kids stuff. Fullmetal Alchemist started to pull me into more serious shounen types of anime and then there was Bleach. I was in the middle of Bleach, grinding through the hundreds of episodes of standard action and prolonged fights. It was cool to me, I liked the characters and sword fights, I was content.
Then a friend told me to watch Air. She said it really affected her and strongly urged me to watch it. I was hesitant at first. The art style wasn’t what I was used to, I hadn’t really seen a moe-type anime before. But, being a dumb kid going into high school, of course I wanted to impress this girl, so I watched it.
It was unlike anything I had ever seen before. The conversations flowed naturally, not like the stiff writing I was accustomed to. The characters, how they acted, the world, it all felt so grounded and real. Of course the art was weird at first, but once I actually saw it in motion that perception melted away. If anything the characters in Air moved so fluidly and authentically that it felt like Bleach was the unnatural show in comparison. I had also never seen a slice of life series before. I had only watched anime about battles and fantasies, I hadn’t seen a show (live action or not) that was just about people. People doing things, people talking, people crying, people with problems. The story wasn’t straightforward and that mystified me. The ending left me feeling confused and strange, but I wanted more. I had been touched by the KyoAni magic.
Then I watched The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. I heard it was good, and read online it was by the same animation studio. This was the one that changed everything. As good as Air was, Haruhi was on a whole other level. It was all so interesting. The set up, the plot, the characters, the way I had to watch it in broadcast order and keep track of the non-linear storytelling. Bleeding in these other-worldly elements into a daily school life felt like a new concept, even though that was exactly how Bleach began. The reason it felt so different was because of how it was framed, the amazing fantastical stuff wasn’t the focus, in fact it barely showed up in some episodes. The real focus was on the people. Once again they felt so real and lifelike, they acted like actual teens would. It was funny and clever and so dense with quality. It was like I had hit a goldmine of anime.
After that point I stopped watching Bleach altogether. It was simple math. Why waste my time on 200+ episodes of Bleach when I could get an experience just as gripping in a short-but-amazing 14 episodes? Other interesting anime stories and experiences had to be out there too. I went on the hunt for more of the classics. Cowboy Bebop, Trigun, Hellsing, FLCL, Wolf’s Rain, Death Note etc.
It was when I took on Lucky Star that I started to take notice of KyoAni’s distinct mark of quality. Buttery smooth animation. Genuinely well executed comedy. Cute characters. This sort of attention to detail that was hard to find elsewhere. I got into the mindset that whenever I watched a series by KyoAni I wasn’t going to be let down. That mindset has never changed. I began to hoard their backlog like a dragon on his pile of gold, saving watching their shows until I felt the time was just right.
Clannad After Story was one that really stuck with me. It still does. To this day it’s my personal favourite series KyoAni has made. Even with all their newer stuff I still love Clannad the most. To me it’s slice of life at it’s peak, a perfect mixture of drama and comedy with a healthy mix of tears. I won’t hesitate to admit I bawled like a child by the ending. It’s affected me in ways that nothing else ever has, and I know countless other people feel the same way. This one was the moment that solidified KyoAni as the best anime studio in my eyes. The only series I love more than it is Gurren Lagann, but in terms of watching something that’s grounded in our world, Clannad can’t be topped. KyoAni’s consistent track record of amazing anime is unbeatable in my opinion and as the years kept rolling by that idea only got stronger.
A couple years later I started becoming more obsessed with watching anime. Browsing online Pokemon forums led me to a sub-board where people kept up to date with current anime series. Before long I dipped my toes in. In my first actual season of watching *new* anime, Nichijou started to air. The look of it reminded me of Lucky Star, and I knew it was by the same animation studio so I jumped into it. It was even funnier than I imagined, easily becoming my favourite anime comedy series, each episode had me laughing my head off. For the next 25 weeks I eagerly anticipated every Saturday. The ritual of sitting down to catch a new episode was so ingrained into my mind that yes, I STILL remember that it aired on Saturdays nearly a decade later. Saturdays were Nichijou Days, every week, no questions asked, until the very last episode had aired.
After that I was in. Any season past that point when a new KyoAni show premiered, I would watch it. Hyouka, Chuunibyou, Tamako Market. Even Free!, it didn’t matter what. I would go online and post gifs and awe at the animation. I would listen to the theme songs wherever I went. I always found myself captivated by the beautiful storytelling that held together each series. Watching KyoAni’s episodes would be the highlight of any week they had a show airing. Every year there was a new project to get excited for, a new thing to end up loving.
Going back a bit... At the same time frame as Nichijou I was just as obsessed with video games as I was with anime. I had chosen games as my career path. I wanted to be a game designer, or someone who worked on games. I was dumb and young and hopeful, so the actual position didn’t matter. Reality hit soon after. For monetary reasons outside of my control I couldn’t continue with games as a post secondary education. I was pulled from my university Game Design course just one semester in. Because of those circumstances I missed my opportunity to get into the other Game Design course at a more cheap local college. I was left distraught. It was then that I had to make a choice. Take the college’s other course offered to me... or wait an entire year for my next shot. That course was Animation.
Without my current love of anime I probably would have reconsidered. The affection for the anime medium had been nurtured inside me for years at that point. I don’t think I’d had the same love for it as I do without Kyoto Animation and all their shows. I’d still be watching low quality stuff like Bleach, I might have even gotten bored of it and stopped watching anime altogether. The path I took was because I had seen Clannad, because I had seen Haruhi, because I had seen Air even. KyoAni literally changed my life. Without them I wouldn’t have gone into an animation career. I wouldn’t have ever got my name in credits of Avengers. I honestly don’t know where I would be, if I would keep trying with video game stuff or go some place completely different.
It was devastating to hear about the fire yesterday. I’m still torn up about it and I’m probably going to be feeling like shit for a while. I don’t think I can express enough how much my heart goes out to them. KyoAni has affected me so personally, and I know the same goes for millions of others. Their work is something no one else can replicate, the amount of heart and soul that goes into each production is palpable. I felt it from the first time I ever saw it in Air and I can still feel it now. I pray and wish them all the best in this horrible time. There is no taking back what happened. Someday I hope they can return to doing what they love. It will be a long and difficult journey getting there, but if their hearts are anywhere as strong as the ones they’ve given to all of us then I know they can make it through.

Live Action Cowboy Bebop will most likely suck
I’m sorry but I just know the live action Cowboy Bebop is going to suck or at the very least be rather unsatisfactory. At best its going to look like another Ghost in The Shell or Death note with there live-action movies being mediocre at best or mired in some sort of controversy. My hopes of it being any good are low, and exceptions of an outrage or it being lambasted are high. By the mere fact that this live action adaption of a beloved property is being done by Netflix.
How many shows have they cancelled yet continued to keep promoting trash. This is the same company that canceled “I Am Not Okay With This” and “Mindhunters” manged to get the original creators of Avatar who then parted ways with Netflix over creative differences. These are the people who choose to give “13 Reasons Why” four seasons. Essentially allows what can possibly be described as soft-core cp onto their site with Cuties.(Just run a list of things that come to the top of my head)
Best case scenario is that the Netflix original live action Cowboy Bebop keeps the Netflix staff locked in a broom closet while the writers actually work. Even then my hopes would only be increased slightly.
Even then the series could simply be helmed by the wrong people who could be incompetent, don’t care about the property, are greedy and lazy and are making something anime related as an easy cash grab, they could be a massive fan of anime but they completely miss the point of themes and probably see the plot as something else.
When I’m making this its the 17th so it will come out in three days. I hope it turns out to be good and the anime community’s paranoia proves to be wrong in this case. Undoubtedly though Netflix has earned a reputation and they are doing everything in their power to keep it apparently.  Regardless of what happens the social media shit storm will be entertaining. And if anyone has any hate send it towards the writers, producers, and director. don’t send hate mail or death threats to those that no control over the script. And also fuck Netflix for making decisions for entertainment possible.

Heres a Thread of Anime Recommendations Because Friends Always Ask:
To start with, these are just my opinions and I haven’t watched every anime in the world. So if you have other recommendations, add them!
BEGINNER ANIMES: Most beginner animes I particularly like are pretty long (100-300 episodes) but I have a few that are not. I genuinely don't remember the first anime I watched, but these are my recommendations
Naruto/ Naruto Shippuden: Naruto and Naruto Shippuden pretty much go together for me. Naruto doesn’t start out the best, a lot of the characters turn you off because they are either really whiny or just all broody which isn’t particularly my cup of tea, but by around episode 20 (the start of the Konoha Crush arc) you are HOOKED. Naruto Shippuden, on the other hand, is good from the start and is (in my opinion) why I still love the series as a whole to this day. Naruto was one of my first anime, so I will always have a special place in my heart for it.
PROS:
Great characters
Excellent character development
Awesome plot
Lots of action (once you get into it)
Fight/background music is great
Comes in dubbed and subbed
CONS
Not the best theme songs (not a problem for me in particular but I didn’t want to leave that out)
Fight scenes are pretty long
Long series in general
Tons of filler episodes
Inconsistencies
Helpful Hint: Look up the filler episodes if you watch this series. It makes the series a lot shorter and saves you from bullshit plots plots that don’t particularly add to the story
Hunter x Hunter (2011): I haven’t finished this series yet and haven’t gotten that far into it, but I really like it so far. The whole plot is interesting and easy to follow and just a wholesome show in general.
PROS
(as I mentioned earlier) Easy to follow
Great characters
Shorter fight scenes
Interesting plot
Currently releasing dubbed and the voice actors aren’t Shit are perfect for the characters
Good background music *cues spanish guitar*
Good fight scenes
CONS
A Relatively long series (not a bad thing but you just have to invest a lot of time into it)
Hard to get hooked (the first arc is slow)
Constant hiatus
Chimera Ant arc dragged on for too long
Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood: Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is genuinely one of the best animes I ever watched. Everything about this show is great and I cant give it enough love.
Pros
Fights were perfect length
Characters are likeable (even a lot of the villains to be honest)
Good character development
Not an obscene amount of romance (I’m looking at you, Sword Art Online)
Plot is great
Perfect show length
Subbed and dubbed
CONS
The First Episode is Slightly Confusing
Pokemon: I watched this show when I was a kid, either Naruto or this show was probably my first anime but I’m not sure. It’s a pretty good show but isn’t my favorite of all time. I still think it’s a good start into the anime world, though
PROS
Genuinely funny characters
The pokemon weren’t “boring”– They had personalities of their own and made the show a lot more entertaining at times
Great movies
Antagonists are charismatic
Dubbed and subbed
Nostalgic
CONS
Plot is pretty basic
Boring at times
The newer seasons aren’t that good
Fights aren’t that great
Characters weren’t that complex
Overrun (in my personal opinion)
Quite long
Attack on Titan: I genuinely liked Attack on Titan for a long time before cancerous fans started polluting my feed. I still watch it (I haven’t watched all of season 2 yet, though, oops) and I do really like the show. I just some of the toxic fans.
PROS:
Good plot
Fights aren’t drawn out usually
Great plot
Dubbed and subbed
Still coming out
Amazing art
Good opening
CONS
Eren (the main character) comes off as an Asshole is angry 90% of the time (which is understandable, but annoying)
Mikasa (the main characters friend) is very whiny
A lot of the character’s you see all the time are really underdeveloped
Many fans are toxic
Takes a long time for new Seasons to come out
HONORABLE MENTIONS IN THIS CATEGORY (aka stuff I haven’t watched/ watched a lot of but everyone “raves” about
Dragon Ball Z
One Punch Man
Assasination Classroom
One Piece
Madoka Magica
SCI-FI/PSYCHOLOGICAL HORROR: I personally haven’t watched a lot of psychological horror/sci-fi even though I want to. This is probably because my life has been consumed with rewatching animes I have been watching other stuff instead. Anyhow, here are my favorites:
Death Note: I love this anime a lot. The plot, the characters, the everything. I haven’t watched it in a couple of years, but is for sure on my top 10 list even still today.
PROS
Great character development
Great plot
Makes the watcher think
Intense
Dubbed and subbed
CONS
Normal Length (about 40 episodes)
Some of the characters are annoying (by some I mean one in particular)
Complex plot (not a con for me but a lot of people prefer easy-to-follow anime)
Dubbed voice actors don’t really go with the characters (also not a problem for me because I usually prefer subbed over dubbed)
First episode doesn’t “hook” you in
Parasyte: I haven’t watched a lot of this show so I cant particularly criticize it as much as the others just because I haven’t watched the whole thing. But from what I’ve watched, it seems like a decent show.
Pros:
Decent length
Interesting plot
Pretty easy to follow
Good character development
Subbed and dubbed
“Hooks” you in quite easily
Opening is a bop
Cons
I don’t have any huge cons about it so far, all I could really say is that its “gruesome” but then again I haven’t watched a sci-fi/psychological horror one that isn’t like that
Tokyo Ghoul: Another anime I haven’t finished, but I have read a lot of the manga and do genuinely enjoy the show. It has all of the elements I like in a show and more. I just haven’t watched enough of it because I am already watching 2 anime’s and don’t want to completely flunk out of college.
PROS
Great plot
Characters are interesting
Easy to follow
Subbed and dubbed
Decent length
CONS
Dubbed isn’t the best
First episode was pretty fast paced
HONORABLE MENTIONS:
Cowboy Bebop
Steins;Gate
Psycho-Pass
Code Geass
ROMANCE/SLICE OF LIFE ANIME: I feel like these go hand and hand. A lot of these could go under a “fantasy” tab but I honestly haven’t watched a lot of fantasy that weren’t also “romance” or “sci-fi”. This tab is going to show how hopelessly romantic I am, oh my God.
Also, keep in mind most of these will be relatively short (12-24 episodes) just because
Nijiiro Days: This genuinely is such a funny and great slice-of-life anime. The friendship and the different personalities of the guys in this show is so great. I watched it earlier this year, and it has become one of my favorite slice-of-lifes of all time.
PROS
Funny
Decent length
Characters are interesting
Easy to follow
Not the typical “romance” anime (theres not a bunch of unnecessary drama, no unreasonable jealousy, etc)
Wholesome
 CONS
Can feel a bit repetitive at times
There isn’t a lot of “character development”: most of the characters stay the same
Hanasaku Iroha: I haven’t watched all of this show, but I love it so far. It’s unlike any slice- of life I’ve seen before. Theres not a huge amount of romance in it, it’s mostly about the the relationships the main character develops throughout the show.
PROS
Funny
Decent characters
Interesting plot
Not a stereotypical “slice of life anime”
Decent length
Great art
Wholesome
CONS
Subbed only
Isn’t an anime you can binge
Some of the characters are assholes rude to the main character for genuinely no reason other than jealousy
Nana: A great romance anime that leaves you in shambles. It has some great bops in it. It takes everything you thought you knew about romance anime and completely turns it around and makes you wonder “why?”
PROS
Interesting
A lot more realistic than most romance animes
Dubbed and subbed
Good music
Decent characters and character development
CONS
Can feel repetitive at the beginning
First few episodes aren’t that great
Makes Rethink Everything you Once Thought About Love
A lot of jealousy
Durarara!: I watched this anime early last year and really liked it. I have to admit that I didn’t like the second season as much as the first, but it was all really interesting to me. I didn’t know if this was considered sci-fi or romance, but I decided to put it under this category anyways.
PROS
 Hooks you in easily
Funny
Action-packed
Characters are interesting
Has some character development
CONS
Some episodes are quite boring/uneventful
Second season isn’t that great
Ao Haru Ride: Not my favorite anime of all time, but still deserves to be on the list. It’s genuinely the typical School Romance Anime. I bet a lot of people would like this series, I think I didn’t like it because I went through a breakup right before watching this series.
PROS
Characters have decent backstories
Art is pretty
Average length
Funny
Cons
Characters can be quite annoying and are pretty “typical” people
So much unnecessary jealousy
Feels drawn out
Kaichou wa Maid Sama: I walked into this anime expecting not to really like it, and was pleasantly surprised.  I honestly thought it was going to be lolita trash but it was so much more. I love the manga and wished that they made the whole manga into an anime, but, alas, you cant always get what you want.
PROS
Wholesome
Makes you scream because of how cute it is
Great plot
Enjoyable
Hilarious
Dubbed and subbed
Not the stereotypical “romantic comedy”
CONS
Not the whole series
Dubbed isn’t great
The main Character can come off as annoying
Yona of the Dawn: I loved Yona of the Dawn, other than the fact Pierrot didn’t do the whole manga. Because of this, I recommend reading the manga after you finish the 24 episode series, because so much more happens.
PROS
Decent length
Subbed and dubbed
Great plot
So much action
Action sequences don’t take up an entire episode
Easy to get hooked on
Adorable as a whole
Great art
CONS
Not all of the dubbed actors fit the characters
Not the whole manga (by “whole” I mean all thats been currently released)
Antagonist has a stupid reason for going after the protagonist (in my opinion)
Ended the series without a great conclusion
Kamisama Kiss: I also wasn’t expecting great things from this, I thought looking at it that it was kind of strange because it’s literally a fox human, but my friend made me watch it, and I was blown away. This series made me cry more times than I care to admit. The whole series as a whole is just magnificent.
PROS
Great plot
Really sweet
Unique
Warms your heart
Funny
Dubbed and Subbed
Dubbed actors are perfect for the characters
Easy to binge
Although it’s not the whole series, it concludes at a good spot
CONS
First episode doesn’t hook you in
Not the whole series
Snow White with the Red Hair: I watched this series earlier this year and really enjoyed it. I only had a few issues with it as a whole, and they are just minor things. If you are interested in fantasy and romance, you should start with this or Kamisama Kiss.
PROS
Relatively short
Great characters
Excellent art
Warms your heart
Easy to binge
Dubbed and subbed
Dubbed voice actors fit the characters perfectly
Easy to binge
CONS
Some of the Episodes aren’t Interesting
Not the whole series (I recommend reading the manga)
Ends without any real conclusion
Lovely Complex: Lovely Complex has a special place in my heart as the first romantic comedy I watched at age 12. I’ve rewatched it once when I was 14, and let me tell you, if you romantic comedy, this is it. I don’t think I’d like it as much if I rewatched it now, but it still deserves to be on the list because it has a special place in my heart.
PROS
Funny
Really sweet (when you get farther in to the series)
Easy to binge
Relatively short
CONS
Characters can come off as whiny
So much unnecessary drama
Doesn’t “hook” you in per se
Characters are pretty bland
Toradora!: I wasn’t amazed with Toradora!, I did like it though. Toradora! is just a run-of-the-mill romantic comedy I’d probably watch in middle school. Although it didn’t stand out in my life, I think a lot of people would still like it, and I have to give it credit where credits due.
PROS
Short in length
Easy to binge
Hilarious
Sweet
Dubbed and subbed
CONS
Typical romantic comedy story
Characters aren’t that interesting to me
So much unnecessary drama
Unreasonable Jealousy
Your Lie in April: Such a great show. Like genuinely I am amazed how unique and bittersweet this whole show was. I watched this last year on a whim and by the ending I was shocked and crying.
PROS
Excellent art
Excellent music
Great plot
Realistic
Some interesting characters
Hooks you in
CONS
Some characters personalities are kind of bland
Isn’t good to binge (please, trust me, take it slow, or else you’ll contemplate the show for too long)
There are some episodes that are kind of meh if you don’t particularly like music  if you don’t like music, this show is not for you
Kimi ni Todoke: Really a pretty sweet show. I liked that the minor characters and main character a lot more than the main characters love interest. The show, all in all, is pretty good if you’re looking for something basic to watch.
PROS
Easy to follow
Decent length
Funny
Decent plot
CONS
A few of the characters are bland
Pretty generic
Second season is just a bunch of drama
Tonari No Kaibutsu-kun: I think I watched this pretty soon after Lovely Complex. Decent show, all in all, just a few issues with it. It reminds me a lot of Toradora!.
PROS
Easy to follow
Average length
Funny
Some interesting characters
CONS
Generic plot
A lot of unnecessary jealousy
A lot of drama
Main character and love interest get annoying at times
Say “I love you”:  This was a decent show. I really liked it when I first watched it, but didn’t really like it the second time. I feel like most romantic animes you can only watch once, then it kind of loses its charm.
PROS
Easy to follow
Gets straight to the point
Wholesome
Warms your heart
Most of the girls in the show are really realistic
CONS
Relationship is unrealistic (but we can dream, right?)
Guys in the show are pretty bland
A lot of unnecessary drama
Generic Plot
Silver Spoon: Silver Spoon is a slice-of life anime that I went into with no real expectations. I honestly just chose to watch it because it was the only thing I found interesting on netflix at the time and decided to watch it on a whim. Let me tell you, this is genuinely one of my favorite slice-of-life animes of all time. The characters are great, the plot is great, and I honestly can’t believe it doesn’t get more attention.
PROS
Not that long
Unique
Great plot
Funny
Interesting characters
CONS
Hard to get in to
Takes a while to get hooked
Ouran Highschool Host Club: I didn’t know if I should put this under the romantic comedy section, but it for sure has comedy. This show sounds extremely weird when you read the summary, I know, but trust me, it’s hilarious. I genuinely love this show and it’s characters with all my heart and wish they made more of it.
PROS
Average length
Hilarious
Great characters
Great plot
Can honestly watch any episode of the series in any order and get the same result (minus the 1st and last 3)
Theme song is a bop
Hooks you in easily
CONS
Not the whole series
Can feel a bit repetitive at times
Not the best conclusion
HONORABLE MENTIONS
Princess Jellyfish
Spice and Wolf
Orange
Fruits Basket
Clannad
Kokoro Connect
Sorry this is so long! I didn’t realize how many animes I thought were decent. I’ll make a separate thread for movies sometime soon so I dont make this any longer. I hope this helped a lot of you guys out!

Prayers for the wicked must never be forsaken.
I jokingly tag all my Thane Krios reblogs and posts as ‘Sad Murder Lizard,’ but I think it sums up my thoughts on him pretty well.
When you first meet him, it’s very cool- neck snapping, vent crawling, sauntering down darkened ducts to casually take out guards, starting a gay awakening in salarian janitors… as introductions go, it’s great.
And then you learn he is dying. And holy shit, is this the trait in which his entire character is built upon; death and redemption. He tells you this, several times over:
The universe is a dark place. I'm trying to make it brighter before I die.
And later, during his loyalty mission trigger:
As I face the end of my body's time here, I find myself dwelling on my mistakes.
Well alright, it’s a suicide mission! Hop aboard, sad murder lizard, you’re recruited. Plenty of room on the Normandy with similarly inclined folk staring at the end of a barrel.
So Shepard sits and talks with Thane over tea, and the first conversations are surface- religion, his sickness, where he’s from. Given what choices you make, he can be quite dry in wit- not Garrus levels of snark, but it’s there.
The second conversation, however, is when the fucked up shit starts surfacing. You learn he’s been an assassin-in-training since he was six, given to the Compact by his parents to the hanar:
They were training me. I was not to be used and thrown away. I was an investment.
Oh but don’t act shocked- sorry, did I mislead you? They saw me as a person, honest. And anyway, I didn’t really kill my first man until I was twelve. This is normal, yes?
And if you fire back that it sounds like slavery, he gets very defensive:
They rescued us – some of us- from extinction. We owe them our lives. Don't insult me, Shepard. Anyone can refuse to serve. Few do.
So let’s talk about that Compact. When I first started writing about drell, I was trying my hardest to see it from the hanar’s point of view; that their intentions were honourable and good, and to some individual hanar, perhaps. Thane gives a mauldin Thomas Hobbes quote about the drell homeworld:
“When all the world is overcharged with inhabitants, when the last remedy of all is war, which provideth for every man with victory or death.” As Rakhana died around them, my people slaughtered each other for mouthfuls of water.
Out of the billions left to die on Rakhana, the hanar took 375,000 drell to the ocean homeworld of Kahje. Later on, thanks to Kepral’s fucking them up, their life expectancy actually decreased: out of those 375,000, Thane tells you:
There are only a few hundred thousand of us left, after all.
I’m going to assume drell are not a mono-religion culture, but to Thane’s religion, where the literal goddess of the afterlife carries you across the sea, it’s very easy to imagine the deep effect it had to most. We the lucky ones have been carried safe and sound, and placed on welcoming shores by our saviours.
The drell at the time weren’t even space faring, nor had they discovered the Relays. They had “no fusion power,” which given the janky space science the writers are prone to can either be taken to mean actual (still a theory)  fusion power, or (already proven, thanks Manhattan Project) nuclear power.
If drell were pre-nuclear power, that means Rakhana fucked itself over during their version of the industrial revolution; the hanar literally took a race that barely made aeroplanes and cars into a world full of Mass Effect relays and made them their servants.
And this fits in very nicely with what Thane tells you the third time you speak to him. That his accountability for his actions are not his own, because drell do not think of their body and souls in the way humans, asari and turians do. So when he kills, it’s on whoever ordered him to make the kill- he was the gun, not the one who pulled the trigger.
My body is merely flesh. Flesh whose reflexes were honed to kill. My body was only the tool they used. If you kill a man with your gun, do you hold your gun responsible?
As lines of defence go, it’s fairly shit, isn’t it? You can’t argue anything back to him, the game won’t let you.
It’s also of note that during this conversation he lets slip his infamous “sunset eyes” solipsism, and his Wife In The Refrigerator is mentioned.
Irikah at least gets to speak in the Foundation comic, and I like some on the things they introduced about her. We learn she was a scientist, and worked researching a cure for a hanar disease; that she really did stand defiant in the laser dot of his sniper rifle.
But it was still her role to die, and I did not get the impression she was her own person in either the  comic or through Thane’s dialogue. In a 24 page comic about her husband I would understand this can be hard to achieve, but she still was a prop created for Thane.
Her death is glorified, too. There’s an entire panel of Thane kneeling in her blood; her attacker goads Thane by telling him she “tasted sweet” when she died, and of the “unspeakable” things they did to her.
And so Thane went after them all in a suitably badass manner. It’s a common storytelling trope: John Wick, Akira, Cowboy Bebop, Logan/Wolverine, The Punisher… Revenge yarns are fun to watch, but the reason for the revenge always seems to be an afterthought.
All of this could be dealt with Thane telling you what he loved about her; perhaps the pride he felt because she helped people with her work, not like him, he was just a killer- that she was a good mother; how she liked her tea- just something other than- defiant, wife, murdered.
Fridging aside, we learn that Thane tried to be a family man. In the comic, he flat out states he didn’t know how to be a husband or a father, but did it anyway. When he asks Shepard for help finding his son, we see he starts to contradict himself:
My body is blessed with the skills to take life. I didn't want that life for Kolyat. I hoped he would find his own way. If he hated me, so be it. He would not have shared the path of sin.
He calls it sin, his life. Gone is the “it was a honour, Shepard” defence and in its place is a man who knows the paths he walked down were dark:
I'm trying to make it brighter before I die.
The loyalty mission hinges on finding Kolyat so his son doesn’t make the same mistake. What’s interesting here is two things introduced to underpin this. The use of Captain Bailey, who looks the other way to help because he sees a parent who gives a damn and knows what estranged father feels like, and Mouse.
Mouse the drala’fa, the forgotten duct rat. Mouse who Thane gave chocolate to, but not Kolyat. Mouse who he took a photo of. Mouse who he used for his wetwork, to spy on his targets. Mouse, who is more observant than he lets on:
Whenever you talked about your kid, your eyes got like that. Like they was someplace else. Sad. He had that holo you took of me, you know. That's how [Kolyat] proved who he was. But when he turned it on, his eyes got like yours do.
Interestingly with Thane, I find the Renegade options reveal meatier options (and snarkier responses.) It’s through Renegade Thane begs Kolyat that he knows no other life:
I was six when the hanar began to train me. I didn't know any better. Your mother woke me from my battle sleep.
That’s him admitting it was a hard life, a life no child should have. There’s no honour of the Compact there, but a lonely man trying to reach out to his son to not make the same mistakes he did.
If the mission is a success and you slap/shoot Kolyat, Thane tells you about Irikah (in an offhand manner I take issue with, as mentioned.) But the main takeaway I get from this conversation with Shepard is this:
It is difficult. All things worth keeping are.
That’s him realising his mistakes, and having some semblance of hope for the future. The last conversation you have before the last mission, no matter if you romanced him or not, is Thane telling you he walked to his death with open eyes. That when you met him snapping necks in Dantius Towers, it was his last target, because he knew without Shepard there, he would’ve died.
If you fail the loyalty mission, Thane walks to his death again, because taking bad is not that same creating good, and that:
Entropy always wins.
If you romance him, you know he’s now terrified he’s woken from his battle sleep and had a reason to live again (Kolyat, Siha) only to have the ticking time bomb in his lungs and the Collectors remind him what little time he has left:
[I will] take the time left given and praise all I know for allowing me to walk my final days with hope and certainty that I am worthy of more than my cold isolation, solely because you believed.
So Mass Effect three happens; Thane is a bit of an afterthought here. From a cold logistical gaming writer POV, I can see why it happened, but it still sucked to endure if you: 1) romanced Thane and 2) actually liked the character.
The writers seemed that take the letter to a romanced Shepard from the Shadow Broker dossier and used it to shape Thane’s narrative for the third game, as well as for the Citadel DLC. Kepral’s isn’t magically cured in the space of six months; no space magic happens for Thane to return to the Normandy and be at your side again.
If I’m honest, I like this aspect of his story; Thane Mod exists for those that do not. In my opinion, death has always shaped his character; it is his constant companion, still.
The reunion you have as a romanced Shepard is very much him “letting you go,” in some ways. After apparently getting it on in a hospital (classy, Shep- classy) the second conversation is him telling you that:
Live well with the time you have. Perhaps we shall see each other again.
No tu fira here yet, that comes later. To fit in with the narrative of the DLC, you can perhaps argue he’s keeping himself out your way as his sickness is worse than he’s letting on. Thane knows Shepard’s role in the Reaper war is important; he would only hold them back.
Which of course means that the game codes you as single there after, and you can’t tell Vega to get jumped when he’s all flirty, or brush off other advances.
Cerberus coup time, and Captain Cutscene (aka Kai Leng and his silly sword) is here. Thane goes out in the way he wanted; not coughing in a hospital bed, but trying to do some good saving a Councillor.
Thane is at least given a goodbye here; he dies with his son and either his Siha or his “only friend” by his side. He prays for you, not him. He wants the last thing he hears to be Shepard’s prayer, not his.
No one in the game recognises the sacrifice, and you need to buy a DLC to be allowed to grieve. When Garrus stands by the memorial wall to talk about the Virmire survivor -if they died, if they didn’t- Thane isn’t mentioned. All the headcanon in the world can create a reason why, but it’s still a dick move from the writers.
The DLC memorial scene is interesting. It has a stilted, awkward Kolyat not understanding why he has to have it (which, for a race built on memories, is hilarious, and I head canon that some drell don’t see the point of memorials, since they never forget anyway.)
Even if you don’t romance him, he sends vidmails to you, his only friend. You know he tried to reach out for you, but circumstances meant you couldn’t connect.
The main interesting thing I take from the funeral scene, is that the Council want to make Thane a recognisable hero. Thane Krios’s name would be associated forever with an act of good, not his “path of sin” as an assassin. He became his wife, defiant in the sight a scope. Or rather, a Cerberus sword.
So, to summarize: Thane Krios- death becomes him, death defines him; in his sacrifice, he will be remembered as a hero, not as a villain: Your mission gave me purpose. A cause to die for. A chance to atone. I was able to speak to my son again. I can leave my body in peace.
NOTE: Despite someone who has so far written a fanfic about Kolyat and has a lot of thoughts about sassy lizards, I’ve been very quiet on Thane/Kolyat’s dynamic in this little essay. It’s an interesting one to talk about, but it deserves its own separate post, which I’ll get around to at some point.

Dude, "Aku No Hana" as to be one of my top 5 favorite animes (certainly behind Cowboy Bebop and Digimon Tamers, but up there). I feel it's cringey af, but in a good way. Your thoughts on the characters/uncomfortable moments?
A ITE
warning: spoilers ahead
Bruh Aku no Hana was a fuckin experience. It was like an uncomfortable, awkward tumbling car crash that kept me tense the whole fuckin time for no god damn reason. I think the uncanny rotoscoping helped a lot with that because god damn.
I liked that the main characters were as multi layered as they were, and that everyone had their own flaws and shit. I also appreciate how they drag to light some subjects that are uncomfortable to usually talk about and deconstruct them or at least present them for what they are.
Like the madonna whore complex is RAMPANT in earlier parts of the story, with Saeki being idealized to the point that Kasuga admits that he was scared of the real Saeki having any flaws, and the demonization of Nakamura which ends up giving way to showing just how fucked up and desperate for friendship she is while having serious problems that hurt everyone around her a lot. A lot of the themes revolve around sexuality and perceived perversion as a way to highlight the repression of sexuality in small towns (and Japan in general maybe?) and how that kind of environment can seriously fuck up kids going through puberty when they start having those kind of thoughts while society tells them that sexuality is something that shouldn’t be talked about.
Also I liked the fact that the main character (and Nakamura less directly) is, whether intentionally or not, a middle finger to those characters who sit in the back of the class looking down on everyone around them for being ‘boring’ or not as ~speshul~ as they are. Those kind characters bug the shit out of me because they’re meant to be wish fulfillment for those awkward kids in class that have few to no friends. That shit is harmful my dude, because those kind of characters can encourage those people to justify their own shortcomings in a way that makes them actively make their problem worse and gives them a condescending view of their peers, alienating them even further. You know, the type of person that misinterpreted Death Note and thought that Light was completely justified? I’m sure you’ve met people like that, I know I have.
Okay I kinda went off on a tangent but the point I was trying to make was that the fact that Kasuga’s pretentiousness and condescending view of his peers is portrayed as something negative is fuckin great. He even admits that he knows that he’s just the same as everyone else and tried to convince himself that he’s special to make himself feel different, and I appreciate that.
Like I read the manga immediately after watching the anime because I really had to know what the fuck was gonna happen. It was a huge ass downer but very interesting, and I constantly wanted these characters to better themselves. The choice to rotoscope all the people instead of anime-ing it up was something that kind of... helped the story. Like holy fuck shit was jarring to look at a lot of the time, but for me it helped me find everything these people went through more believable? I’m not sure how to explain it, but uh... So the manga is good, and I like the anime, but the rotoscoping vs the drawings gave me two completely different tones. The anime felt horror-ey, thriller-ey and uncannily close to “real” but off, but when reading the manga I distinctly felt like “yup this is a manga”.
The COMPOSITION AND COLOURS IN THE ANIME THOUGH. GOD DAMN. Like some of the choices they made in it were amazing and holy fuck. Any time they wanted to represent Kasuga’s monotonous, boring, samey life, they used the same exact shots of the same exact places with different lighting and effects based on the time of day. During scenes that broke away from the repetitive moments they never used those repeated shots even if they were happening in the same exact place. The only time I can remember them reusing a shot for one of these was for that one scene at the intersection through a mirror. Every time it was used to show repitition Kasuga was moving from right to left, but the one time it was used differently he was going in the opposite direction.
Like god fuckin damn the series gave me a lot of different things to think about. I couldn’t stop thinking about koe no katachi while watching and reading it. The two weren’t similar at all, honestly, and the few common points that they touched upon were handled in completely different ways, but just the way that both addressed some serious, real shit and went on to show how these serious issues ended up shaping the characters and the people around them made them remind me of each other, despite almost everything about them being different.
Anyway, I would advise at least giving it a look to anyone who isn’t made too uncomfortable with the subject matter, and if you’re watching the anime please try to work past the rotoscoping if it puts you off, there’s a lot more to Aku no Hana than how pretty the characters look.

Ajin is so great wtf! (no spoilers, no worries ) ALSO, lots of other anime recs mentioned
I started watching an anime last night that @danisnotonfire and @amazingphil keep mentioning especially in their liveshows -- Ajin. I think I thought it was something completely different, like a continuation of another series or something. But I was bored last night and saw it on Netflix so gave it a go.
What the actual fuck, guys! This series is AWESOME so far!!
It actually gives me a lot of Tokyo Ghoul vibes, and from what I can see they first started serialization as manga about a year apart, with Tokyo Ghoul first. But Ajin feels sort of like, if Tokyo Ghoul had focused on the start of all the craziness in Tokyo instead of after there was the full formation of their law enforcement crews and etc etc.
The designs have sort of similar vibes too, from the elite dude in LE to the MC to the MC’s childhood best friend who I also wish was in the series more just like in Tokyo Ghoul, but the personalities aren’t all the same.
I’m not finished with what’s out of Ajin in anime yet--just finished the first season last night, saw the first ep of season 2 this morning, will have to wait till after work to watch the rest this week. So I probably will avoid tumblr for a bit just to avoid spoilers until I’m up to date on the anime at least. Also, I see there are 9 volumes of manga so I’ll probably read the manga too if I continue to like the anime.
I’m feeling about Ajin so far the way I first felt about Tokyo Ghoul -- that I really like it, although sometimes the government or LE make really weird decisions as if it’s to make sure the MCs win, but imo the bad guy in Ajin is way cooler than TG. He’s way more intelligent about the way he’s systematically dismantling shit. Actually, the way social media is integrated into Ajin reminds me a bit of Zankyou no Terror which I ALSO really loved the fuck out of in the beginning but the fucking ending of that and the choice to MC that stupid ass girl totally ruined the series for me.
Also, while I loved the hell out of Tokyo Ghoul, I’ve so far been largely disappointed by Tokyo Ghoul:re (so much so that I stopped reading the manga months ago but I plan to give it another go soon).
So right now, Ajin is reflecting the love I had for Tokyo Ghoul and Zankyou no Terror, but has yet to disappoint me like both of those did. I hope that continues going forward because wow would it be nice to finish an anime series or continue a manga series with as much love as I started it lol
Anyway, Dan and Phil--you guys give good anime recs! (More about their other recs behind the cut)
I also watched Magi after you kept talking about it, even though I’d tried reading the manga years earlier and didn’t like it. But then I gave it another go and now I fucking love that series. Alibaba is the actual fucking best and has become one of my favorite anime characters, period. I’m a few chapters behind on that one because I think the series is ending soon and I kind of wanted to read it all at once, but we’ll see.
Also, I know I’ve watched or heard of a number of the other ones Dan has mentioned in his anime recs. And for the most part, I also have liked or even loved those. Dan’s videos are: Anime Will Ruin Your Life, Dan’s Anime Recs, and Dan’s Anime Recs #2. Also here’s Phil’s video where Dan and Phil cosplay.
The main place where we differ is I didn’t much like Erased (can’t fully recall why), Sword Art Online I gave a go for an episode but didn’t get into it (but this may be a generational thing; I have been into anime like 13 years longer than Dan so I think it’s just that SAO feels like a really new concept if they haven’t seen the 10,000 anime like it I watched ages ago, but it ALSO may be that maybe it gets way better later and I just didn’t give it a good enough chance), and.... that’s actually it. All the other ones he lists I either love, really like, thought was cool, or haven’t seen yet.
Honorable mentions:
I started Haikyuu!! because they mentioned it and OH MY FUCKING GOD THANK YOU DAN AND PHIL.
Chihayafuru--my friend recced this separately to me, said it was one of her favorite series ever. I did start watching it and liked it, I stopped it because idk I just took a break, it’s a bit slower moving of a story than I usually do. BUT it’s good!
Madoka Magica, Soul Eater (the bit I’ve read), Black Butler, Death Note, Free!, these are all good.
Neon Genesis Evangelion and Cowboy Bebop are classics. If you haven’t watched them you have to! Kaworu all the fucking way in Eva <3333333, and Cowboy Bebop is just all around incredible.
Tokyo Ghoul I watched on my own before they recced it --like I said, I liked that too; Tokyo Ghoul imo is super good, it’s just :re that’s meh. Your Lie in April is really good for the most part (although a relationship thing of it bugged me because I knew from the start what was going on, not because spoilers but because it was obvious to me, so that kind of ruined the story a little because I think it was meant to be a plot twist, BUT it’s still quite beautiful and moving)-- Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood is fucking incredible and if you haven’t seen that WHAT ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE. Magi is awesome. I started reading Parasyte because I got the first volume in the $1 bargain box at rightstufanime. I have Stein’s Gate but haven’t watched it yet.
Attack on Titan was one I was suuuuuper into when I first started reading it/watching it when it first came out but then idk. I got caught up to the manga, had to wait for chapters, the art quality deteriorated/changed, I didn’t like most of the characters and the one I did like kind of wasn’t around as much, so I lost my love of that series. I’ll probably watch the anime sometime to see what happens because the anime is much more well done than the manga, in a shocking turn of events that’s contrary to usual.
Fruits Basket is another classic and IT’S SO FUCKING CUTE AND GOOD, if you haven’t seen that WHAT ALSO ARE YOU DOING WITH YOUR LIFE.
re:ZERO I’d found on my own and I loved it. I agree with Dan on having that as a rec. It’s very interesting.
Yuri on Ice I feel pretty meh about. I know everyone thinks it’s the best thing ever but I think it’s really poorly written and I don’t really care too much about the characters. idk if I’ll even bother watching season 2. We’ll see. I kind of don’t like any of the relationships tbh. Not really a fan of the two MCs.
Hunter x Hunter ... I think it’s good through the Yorknew City arc, and I love the FUCK out of Kurapika as a character just generally in anime/manga ever, but I don’t really like the series after that. I am behind on the latest chapters. I tried reading it when the new ones came out after the hiatus but I was kind of turned off by the first 2 chapters and set it aside. Eventually I’ll continue that again.
The rest of the ones Dan has mentioned, I have yet to see but I think I’ve heard a number of them before on other recs.
You should watch his videos for more information on those anime, also you can get a free trial at Crunchyroll using their codes if you need it. tbh I did eventually buy Crunchyroll so I can watch anime on my roku and I’m really happy with this decision. I will continue to pay for it because it’s super nice--even just in watching One Piece for the 10,000th time with my friend.
That became way more rambling/in depth than I planned lol I was just gonna be like “LOLZ AJIN = GOOD SO FAR WOW! :D” but then I wanted to link Dan’s vids and basically say that I do think you should listen to Dan and Phil’s recs. So far they seem like they have really good taste in anime.
And that’s coming from a 33 year old who’s been watching anime/reading manga since 13/14, and has seen/read a shit ton of series over that time. I’m pretty critical of series by now. And for the most part, Dan and Phil have been recommending genuinely awesome series. And I’ve found new series I wouldn’t have watched without them so I’m really happy.
Anyway those are my thoughts! I’m excited to watch more Ajin when I get back from work today! PLEASE DON’T LET ME DOWN AJIN T_T
