OOOOOOO Making some of them crazy would be such a interesting idea to see. I can somewhat imagine Bronya going a bit crazy with yk cocolia’s painting and maybe the other supreme guardians. Like if we would to go off on the idea of having the supreme guardians being enemies, maybe they could do some mind games on Bronya or something, just imagine the ANGST. Im 50/50 on the other characters like i can see them go a bit crazy but also i can see them not going a bit crazy, it depends on what kind of angst you want. Also, i should mention i imagined the reader being a child like Ib so the reader and the characters would have the same relationship that Ib and Gary had. Btw thank you for giving me an excuse to watch IB game playthrough again. I never played the game but had watch a youtuber who did a playthrough of it which got me hooked. Since i daydream a lot, you can be sure i will be sharing those ideas or prompts when i have the time to get on Tumblr!

Omg I really love the idea of the reader being a kid! It's so cute and would be even better for the story to flow! Also I'll see what I come up with for the characters, as I already have an angsty idea on how it ends hehe... I'll see when I have time for the series and to watch the playthroughs, as I have my apprenticeship coming up and stuff. for those curious i'll try to write out the nightmare and what happened. this is a long ramble and is under the cut.

So first off the entire dream was in the style of an old ps1 game with low poly graphics and grainy static that covered everything. the textures were all fuzzy smudges and darkly colored blobs. in the dream, I was walking around an empty apartment complex-type building, mostly down the halls and going into the little rooms that branched off. It was all very dark and cold and dirty with junk all over and tables upturned.

Through the whole dream, I heard someone speaking to me over the radio. IDK if they were a man or a woman or whatever. I just listened to what they told me to do or go and used a flashlight to find things they wanted me to collect.

I remember music but not how it sounded.

I remember a lot of circling back to places I'd already been to double check. I think that annoyed the radio person. I remember being scared a bunch when things had been moved.

There was this 1 section I remember very well.

It happened in a small room with a big pillar in the middle. Big square pillar that forced me to walk next to the walls and look out of the tiny windows. At one point, when the radio said something, everything went extra dark and the walls were alll blackish-purpled. It reminded me of the game Ib and that game's big blue doll character. Lots of dark blues highlighting things while purple smudges covered the walls and floor.

The windows changed and were now paintings of some teen girl/woung woman's face.

She was pale and smiling with her eyes scratched out.

The picture was the same in every single frame. There were a hundred windows that went all around the room. So her face repeated over and over and over as i slowly walked(the walk speed was shit) around and around and around and listened to the radio hum. There was red text under her that said something roughly to the effect of "Suicide is the easiest way to die. Please do so, now"

I remember the "please do so" the most but that's ROUGHLY what the first part said. The text was bright red and glowed, and kinda reminded me of an analog horror video with how it just. floated in front of the picture.

then the radio cut. and it was quiet. and i was very very alone.

aaaaand then i woke up cuz my cat was scratching at the door :") very odd dream

but yeah!

I still love ib so much it blew my mind when i first played it with my sister soon after it came out but literally ecery time i go into an art museum now i will see at least one painting or installation that will remind me of that fucking game

i was in the middle of another drawing and this idea hit me after listening to the mp100 ost for like the 20th time (some parts remind me of horror rpgs) but im having some Thoughts™ and want to get them out

mp100 x ib crossover/au (or as i call it, mib lol)

mob = ib obviously (they both even have red eyes, and i think thats neato) reigen = gary (do i even need to explain this one) minori - mary (more of a puppet role in this case than solely acting on her own - ) mogami - weiss guertena (both world famous, both put a lot of stock in their skill/profession, AND both created a twisted world after dying that is a hazard to the people trapped in it) also this was all inspired by me seeing the phrase "world of mogami" in a comment and my peanut brain instantly connected it to "the wonderful world of guertena"

im also thinking in this au, mogami still saw spirits and those are the subjects of his paintings, hence why they dont come from "real" dead people. minori/mary could be the exception that is hinted at in the game (im pretty sure there is a hint of one, but i think in reality none of them were based on real people) she could be someone mogami knew when he was alive, but she passed away when she was still young, and thus immortalized only her in a painting

so then the fact that all the paintings come to life and start attacking people makes a bit more sense (minori/mary is seeking a friend that she can truly trust, something she never had in life)

i think at the start of the game, ritsu is walking around with mob and at the moment they look at the ??? world painting, only mob disappears, leaving ritsu to freak out and try to find him back in the real world, but to no avail

an alternate ending could be where mob ends up the brainwashed one, and believes that he's reunited with ritsu, but its actually minori and he is still in the other world idk if this would take the place of the ending where ib chooses to stay with mary, but that could also still work (we all know mob has a good heart, but i dunno if he would sacrifice himself to help someone he doesnt really know, especially when he does already have a real sibling - ib was an only child and likely felt lonely, even if she had parents)

another idea on endings, the good ending where ib/mob returns, they go to the rose statue and standing there talking to ritsu is reigen, and mob is relieved to see both of them alive and well

rose colors: mob - still red reigen - dusty pink minori - blue

if you're wondering if mob still has his psychic powers, im thinking he does, but in the world of guertena/mogami, he isnt able to use them. hes got to figure out how to do things on his own, and that just makes everything even more terrifying for him.

oh and after thinking about dimple, he takes the role of the ant in the green room

like where could teru be shoved in here, im up for thoughts on that ik an obvious choice would be to make him mary, but if this is the wonderful world of mogami, i think it makes more sense to make her minori

Also this might just be blind nostalgia talking but it really reminds me of this old book series I read as a kid but never got to finish cause our shit library didn’t have the last book. But it’s called the books of elsewhere & the main girl looks like Coraline & in their old Victorian house you can enter the paintings, but it soon goes from a beautiful enchanted world to dark & sinister trying to I think kill her or turn her into a painting? But this show is really taking me back so I’m 😍😍

That sounds so interesting! That reminds me of this game I used to play called IB and it had a pretty similar concept. It was about this little girl who went to an art gallery with her parents and she ended up getting pulled into the world of the paintings where they were all trying to kill her. I love the whole Victorian vibe honestly, I’m super excited to watch Locke and Key

Ib is such a good game! My favorite ending is always been "A painting's Demise". It's just, i really really cared about Mary and seeing her think she got out just to have the gallery taunt her and remind her that she can never leave always got me. She could be creepy but just wanted to have friends and be in a nice place in the end.

tl;dr: tbh not much to go off on about. i think we see a new skin for Iron Bear, one with some stripes. amara smiles, i do talk a little bit about little sisters in bioshock but tbh i think this was all just a stylistic choice lol. oh and handsome jack’s masks- probably Mount Jackmore. i don’t want to get to freaked out over jack returning, but damn gearbox lol u had me there for a second. im pretty sure it’s just a reused cut quest from bl2 that they never got to implement.

Overall, I think I preferred the manga version better, but the anime really would have needed the luxury of either double length episodes or double the episode count to give me what I wanted I think. I went in with realistic expectations and I was not disappointed. The escape from and trashing of Golzine’s mansion has to be one of my favorite things in the manga. I love the Rambo aesthetic, I love the over the top weaponry, I love the emotional impact of the scenes that unfold. We lost some of our emotional impact in the anime translation, but that was a given considering where they’ve short changed us in other episodes. Like while I’m glad that we did manage to get a lot of iconic scenes, I could have lived with some time shaving to happen with Ash and Eiji if that meant the scene in the autopsy room had gotten a few extra pauses for emotional impact that it lacked.

Please be aware that there are spoilers below.

I remember when I first read the manga Ash and Alex were confusing me at first until I got used to Alex’s design since they both lacked tone in their hair. While my facial recognition has improved over the years, it’s nice to see them give Alex brown hair to help clear that up even farther. Also, I have to lol at Bones’ rattail in 2018, but at the same time, I can’t imagine him without it.

I know people miss Griff’s longer hair (and tbh I do too) but wow does he look like a lot of the guys I went to school with his hair like that.

I always liked that Yut-Lung approaches Ash cautiously and gets a feel for his state of mind before deciding how to give him the key. This scene between them really illustrates how they’re so very similar but different at the same time, but I think part of that is because I know Yut-Lung’s backstory from the manga, which makes it easier to see this, like the moon trying to talk to the sun, for lack of a less cliché way to put it.

It’s nice to see the flip in motion. I like how it seems like they gave Ash a proper form to make it seem more plausible.

I miss Ash saying “You too” to Max when Max says, “Don’t die.” Although I do kind of see why it got cut since it will give Ash a longer time to process what just happened with Shorter and open him up to forgiving Max about Griff now that he can see Max’s perspective.

Kind of you know makes you think about Arthur being a part of the government. In the manga timeline he’d be a viable presidential candidate or something. He could talk a good game about pulling himself from the streets and jeez. Like seriously just imagine that. Worst boy as some groomed politician.

I think in some ways I liked the dirtier, bloodier aesthetic for Ash in the manga, but I think that it would be harder to achieving in the anime since part of that is conveyed by lines that you wouldn’t really use here.

”I’m going to bust the lock!” and proceeds to bust the door down. I love it.

I’m not sure what music I was imagining for Eiji and Ash reuniting but this was not it. Something about the use of the base makes it seem kind of club-ish, though I can see why it’s being used so that the entire sequence can have a drive to it.

Of course Ashe is going to take the flashiest car with the flashiest color. That said I like the little details that remind us he’s seventeen. It adds to the horror element of the series.

I prefer Eiji shouting “I will wait for your always!” from a moving car while Ash gazes after him (as per the manga). That said, I do like that we get to see the gang’s reaction to all of this because their faces are priceless.

I’m just glad Ibe got to see that Eiji is all right. I can’t imagine what all of this must be like for him. He must feel a lot of guilt and responsibility.

And here we are yet again, not taking a moment to breathe and let a death really sink in. I mean we let Shorter’s death sink in last week, but I feel like Ash falling to the floor in shock and horror should have had a pause to it that we just didn’t get/couldn’t have.

One of the biggest, biggest drawbacks to this animation style is the tears become near-invisible or invisible against flesh tones. I noticed this a few episodes ago when Eiji exited Ash’s hospital room and you could almost see the tears but there just wasn’t enough definition that it looked weird on his face. Here we have Ash with tears streaming down as he fires the rest of his bullets into the man responsible for all this loss and pain in his life and I just had to print screen it and zoom in in Paint because I couldn’t tell if he was actually crying or not. Maybe it’s my color vision issues, but I hope when they retool their frames for the BluRay/DVD releases that they’ll find a way to make tears pop more.

Actually, I think we really should have had a touch longer on the emptying of the gun and the scream. It’s really a shame they don’t have the length of episode or length of series to really underscore these things.

I think I liked Sing’s line from the manga translation that went something like, “Is he planning to join Shorter?” a little better.

((Under the cut is me sobbing about why A Painting’s Demise is the saddest ending. I’m putting it under a cut because well it’s like all spoilers and way longer then necessary. If you want to skip my ramblings go all the way down the list to bullet point 9 for a quick summarization of why I feel this is the saddest ending.))

Okay so to start I want to say, I think A Painting’s Demise is the saddest ending because not one or two people die but it’s hinted at that everyone may have died. 

Now first things first is the part that is obvious why I’ll find sad. But finding Garry losing his mind in the doll room. Now no matter the ending this part always rips my heart up especially when it comes to Ib’s reactions to this part. This one specifically hurts me with Ib’s reaction. In the other endings if Ib doesn’t manage to snap Garry out of his insanity, she’ll press on and continue. But in this ending she just stops, she practically breaks down, she sits down next to Garry and refuses to leave his side.

Which brings us to more obvious reasons as why this ending is sad. To preface this, Ib has to have less then 4 bond points with Mary in order to unlock this ending. In game that means when Garry stops functioning, so does Ib pretty much and Mary has to leave on her own. She tries to get Ib to come with her but Ib refuses, instead staying at Garry’s side. Which to a child, especially a child like Mary, could be seen as Ib choosing Garry over her. That is something the game plays with a lot, people choosing one and another over each other. IE; Mary asking who Ib would save if she had too, Garry sacrificing his life for Ib’s, and Ib having to decide between following Fake Mom or Garry. Yet even though it seems Ib has chosen Garry over Mary, Mary still plans to return for Ib later. Which to me shows Mary as having a stronger bond to Ib then Ib does to Mary.

After this we have Mary in the gallery itself. Now let’s stop and think a moment about Mary and the gallery. The gallery is her whole life, it is her home, her friends and everything she’s ever known. So of course we can assume the gallery is important to her. In fact the gallery tries to help her and remind her to go back, to stay with them. This can either be the gallery art not wanting to lose their one friend OR the gallery trying to remind her she needs to take the place of Ib or Garry in order to escape. The gallery making one last attempt to help her.

But Mary ignores all this and keeps going until she finds the Fabricated World painting. She jumps through the gallery either forgetting or not knowing that she needed to take someone else’s place. Now once she enters the gallery she’ll find no one is there, the gallery is dark and the front entrance is locked. Now as though to add insult to injury, the gallery turns against her. Her own home turns against her and starts trying to scare HER. The messages on the walls turn from questioning and imploring to verbally assaulting Mary. To telling her she’s a bad girl and reminding her not only is her heart is fabricated but she can’t return.

For the first time in the game we see Mary afraid of the gallery, afraid of her own home at this point. She’s questioning if anyone is there and grabs her pallet knife for protection. At this point she starts talking about how she’s scared and starts asking for help. Once she reaches the reception desk the gallery has almost completely turned against her as it now shows a picture of HER dead. We've seen the gallery do this to Ib and Garry through out the game. But from my memory we don’t ever see it try to actually torment or frighten Mary until now.

As the screen gets darker at this point, and we can assume the gallery gets darker, Mary starts questioning why she’s the only one there. Once she gets no response to that she begins to cry for help, first asking for Ib’s help as she’s lonely, they beginning to become more frightened and crying for Garry’s help. Now this part always gets me because from the game we’ve seen Mary doesn’t care much for Garry. At least not in the way she cares for Ib. Yet when she’s in danger, when she’s scared, she still calls for him. From that response we can gather she had SOME sort of more positive feelings towards him or at least enough positive feelings to feel that when she was in danger she could call him and he would help.

BUT as if that wasn’t heartbreaking enough we have the name she yells at the end. After she’s done crying for help, when she starts to hear footsteps rapidly approaching, Mary yells for her father. There’s two ideas we can take from this, either she’s crying in one last desperate attempt for someone, anyone to help and is calling for him. Or in the dark, what we can’t see, is the person that was running towards her, the person attacking her and the only hint we have to their identity is “Father.”. Now I personally follow the idea that she’s crying for help from her father, not realizing that he is dead and cannot help. But I do also have to find it interesting that after a moment of silence, after the footsteps are done approaching the word she cries out is father.

So to recap why I believe this is the saddest ending.  Garry has completely lost his mind with no signs that he’ll snap out of it and return back to the Garry we know and love. Ib sees one of her closest allies lose his mind and not react at all to her. Which in response sends her to give up and refuse to move from a spot next to him. Meaning Mary has to leave on her own, without the friend she so desperately wanted. It can be assumed that both Ib and Garry are now trapped for god knows how long, possibly forever, in the fabricated world.    Meanwhile Mary dies(or meets some other horrible fate) in this ending in a world she knows nothing about with her HOME terrifying her and tormenting her until the point she is crying for someone, anyone to help help her. To the point she is crying for her dead father to save her with her not realizing he is dead. OR worse yet with her dead father being the one to attack her in the dark. If all that isn’t sad as all get out then IDK  what is.

I literally remember playing IB with that song blasting through my headphones at like 12 or 13. I absolutely loved Mary specifically as a kid, mainly because I was edgy. Anyone played Ib? I really really love Ib and MM so I want to do a thing featuring Jumin/V/Rika because V and Rika kinda reminds me of Garry and Mary and Jumin as Ib because he has deep connections with these two that’s why I didn’t use MC…

special chapter interpretation

I see a lot of peeps being disappointed by there not being chapter 30. So do I, but I actually like the special chapter bc not only it’s very artsy, there’s lots of stuff to analyze.

I woke up thinking about this and couldn’t go back to sleep so I’ll just get this out of my system.

I just woke up so expect some errors. If you’re down, go forth!

The world

I believe this represents Yoonbum’s inner world. This ‘world’ being dark, creepy, and weird is basically what Yoonbum perceives what he is (weirdo, stalker, killer) and how his life has been (it sucks). 

This world reminds me of the RPGMAKER game, Ib. And it could be that Yoonbum thinks that he’s a player in a game. A game that Sangwoo made?

Ticket man

Ugly and deformed, with eyes shut (looks to be sewn shut) and fingers cut off, I think it’s either Yoonbum’s uncle or Yoonbum himself. Him being at the ‘entrance’ marks the start of the ‘nightmare’ (Uncle). Him having no fingers, seeing nothing, and trapped behind a cage could be Yoonbum’s subconscious attempt at shutting his uncle or his other, undesirable side out.

Baby Seungbae

Yoonbum thinks of Seungbae as a baby. Babies understand nothing, innocent, stupid, and unreliable. Yoonbum can’t rely on someone like that, can he? Well, that’s what he believes, at least.

The thing dragging baby Seungbae away means that there’s a greater power above him, maybe the shitty police force, Sangwoo, or it’s an embodiment of Yoonbum’s mistrust on Seungbae, denying any of his attempt to help him. 

Clown and Sangwoo

Clowns are performers. They wear make-up, wear costume, and entertain people. No one knows what the real person is like beneath the clown persona. I think this is Yoonbum not understanding Sangwoo’s behavior, confused on which one is the real Sangwoo - The affectionate, loving Sangwoo, or the violent, mean Sangwoo.

Towards the end, The clown disappears, and Sangwoo appears in its place. I think it could mean either Yoonbum slowly understanding Sangwoo, or that Yoonbum perceives himself to becoming like Sangwoo - by becoming a killer. When you look into the abyss, the abyss gazes into you.

Sangwoo’s mom

There’s a painting believed to be that of Sangwoo’s mom inside Yoonbum’s inner world. It’s mysterious and unclear because Yoonbum simply doesn’t know who the painting is of.

Yoonbum knows at some point that Sangwoo sees another person in him - his mom. Sangwoo does this frequently in earlier chapter, telling Yoonbum ‘I love you’ and comparing him to his mom. Yoonbum thinks of this a lot, judging from the size of the painting being one of the largest.

Other

Jieun - Such a huge painting. Represents Yoonbum’s massive guilt of killing her.

Two Yoonbums? - Yoonbum’s self before and after.
