Growing up with strict, neurodivergent parents while neurodivergent yourself will have you as an adult acting like you've recently escaped the feywild. What are the tricky rules? Is everything accounted for? How do I ensure I don't accidentally step over the line into Impoliteness. You know the consequences aren't death and dismemberment but you might look down one day and find you've lost your shadow and all of your friends if you're not careful

(Brief content warning for appetite disregulation and talking about eating habits)
So in light of ADHDAlien's cool posts and some of my ADHD friends and family starting college or being newly diagnosed, let me, a whole ass adult (somehow?) with a job, also share what has helped me with my ADHD so far! Conversation time!
Background: I was diagnosed at 7 and prescribed methylphenidate 18mg ER, starting immediately upon diagnosis and having maintained the same dose except for during college, where I scooted up to 20.  I'm very responsive to medication of any kind, and higher doses make me uncomfortable physically, so be aware that this is the babiest of baby doses.  Ritalin has a stronger effect with less intensity than Adderall, and for people who have severe symptoms, Adderall may be the only one that works.
In high school I began doing organizational tutoring to better manage my course load, and that was the single most helpful thing I did, but that may not be accessible to anyone.  So here are some things that I've employed on my own.  They may not be helpful for everyone, but in the event that they are...
-Time is fake, and the sooner you realize it, the more sense it'll make.  We can't connect the current events in our brain to the end result, (usually done via anticipatory dopamine, which is literally what ADHD is: lack of that) and ergo we can't process that 2pm is [_______] from 3pm and we need to get ready at 2:15 or something...  Like what.  That's fake.  The time it takes to complete a task is also fake.  Divide your tasks into days/assign sub tasks based on either 1. necessary order they need completed in, and 2. energy, instead of based on estimated time.  For me that's been far more intuitive.  
-Body Doubling or inviting people over as an external motivator to do a task.  Invite a friend over to motivate yourself to clean your room or make food.  Either bc they show up and help or even just tell you to do it, or bc you want your space to be nice when they've arrived.
-SNACKS.  Eat eat eat!!!  You are hungry, more often than your body will acknowledge!  Small things like fruit snacks or a pack of crackers you can eat slowly, one every few minutes while doing a task are ideal.  Since we have shit anticipatory dopamine, we just have to reward ourselves, and food does an ok job.  That said: be careful with dark chocolate, it can be an appetite suppressant if the cocoa content is high.  Same with caffeine.  My stimulants also make me more sensitive to caffeine side effects.
Also, take snacks with you during the day, because if you're like me, you get tired easily if you don't eat often.  Chocolate milk or drinkable yogurts are great fast energy boosts.  Plus they're fortified with vitamin D, which in my latitude is in short supply.
-In the same vein: Have low effort, high calorie food on hand.  You will have times when you can't summon the energy or get sucked into a hyper focus wormhole and don't have time or spoons to cook.  Frozen dinners/personal pizzas/canned soups... whatever to get meal-quality food into you fast.  If you eat meat, take advantage of cured or preserved meats that last a long time and are harder to let spoil.  Some are stable at room temp, like jerky.  If you don't, peanut butter seems to serve people well (can't relate tho, allergic)
-A lot of this is revolving around food, but ime regular meals and easy foods I can get myself to make and eat is something I struggled and still struggle with a lot.  Prep snacks when you have spoons and time to do so.  Hard boiled eggs before bed.  Make extra portions' worth of rice with your dinner. Anything to have extra calories on hand ASAP.  Also, rice cookers and any kind of automation is a lifesaver.  Just set a timer to remember to get it out later, or pair it with when you're hungry and motivated to get it out and won't forget >.>
-Setting timers. Sucks.  it really does.  but it's better than not setting timers.  If you have a "it's time to leave for class or work" alarm, make sure you have everything packed and you're dressed BEFORE the alarm goes off.  With time blindness, that can be hard, but we do typically process abstract "x BEFORE y", just not "15 minutes before y".  Switching from direct numbers to just "this has to be DONE by y time" is easier ime. 
-Wear an analog watch.  Helped me with time blindness so much.  I could watch the minute hand crawl as I walked across campus and it cemented how tasks or going places took.  I can link "this takes this space on the clock" easier than "this is (abstract number)".
-AUTOMATE WHATEVER YOU CAN. I'm not just talking about rice cookers and dishwashers and roombas, though those absolutely count.  I also mean computer programs--zotero for citation formatting, writing or finding macros or scripts for file processing so that you reduce the number of clicks while working.  LEARN TO USE EXCEL and clone sheets, if applicable for your job.  Anything you can press a button for instead of having to think about is more that will get done during a day.  
-If you have a pressing task that is making you sad or just has been hovering over you, or a big assignment: take the anxiety as a sign to prioritize it, and set aside an entire day for it.  I'm not joking.  Take a mental health day and do your taxes.  Even if it only takes an hour, time is fake to us.  Energy is not.  Escapism or productive procrastination (doing other tasks that do need done, though less pressing, while avoiding another) devour insane amounts of time.  If that is your One thing slated for that day, then it'll get done.  Promise.  
-Yes, use a schedule planner, but GET ONE WHERE YOU CAN SEE THE WHOLE WEEK ON ONE PAGE SPREAD.  That way, when you break up assignments (I may do a post about how to do this, but it's integral and entirely what my organizational tutoring was for) you can see how everything fits into the week and where you will put tasks that roll over between days.  Teacher planners are good for this.  This shit got me through my college projects.  Also: write in the assignments and important deadlines for your whole class syllabus right when you get it, for students.  It'll take like 2 hours but you can SEE where things fit in physical space instead of abstract time.
-Write lists, not for the purpose of doing the things on them, but just to sort out what's rattling in your head.  I rarely LOOK at lists after making them, but knowing it's all down on paper means I'm no longer worried about forgetting it, and threads it into my brain piece by piece, I can process each individual concern.  What should be on these lists?  Anything bothering you: deadlines, worries, emotional chaos.  Anything that circulates in and out of your conscious thoughts.  Chores you haven't done, inadequacies.  It's like defragmenting a drive when you write it down.  
-Your RSD makes it feel like people don't care for you.  Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria is literally so central to my experience, and I don't see it talked about beyond "it exists and it makes me feel The Awful".  It impaired my ability to have healthy boundaries and connections to people, because it compounded with my insecurities to make me feel like people weren't showing me they cared or giving me enough encouragement.  I got frustrated and I felt like my emotional needs were unfulfilled.  It took a lot of therapy to get to the root of it: that I felt unsupported and was reaching to people I shouldn't for external support, when most of the pain I was looking to heal was internal.  It is okay to ask for help!  There's just a part of RSD where you have to learn to separate what is your OWN pain in response to yourself, your own echo of self-loathing attaching itself to another's behavior, and what is genuinely hurtful behavior.  I don't mean that you are accusing anyone of this; rather until you separate the pain you feel from the impact of others, you will feel trapped and controlled by their reactions.  It's complicated.  I advise therapy if it's accessible, but even knowing to look out for it will help.  Admitting the words "I am in pain because I hate something about myself, and their reaction makes me aware of it" is a huge first step.  Yes, spoken aloud.
-If you're breaking stim toys or wringing your hands, crushing things... You're freaking out and you need to go deal with whatever is bothering you.  Your unconscious movements will register before the importance of the emotion itself will.  I find my emotions are like my appetite, it's inconsistent when I will actually process them on a conscious level.  Learning to watch my hands helped me realize when I was overwhelmed.  It may be another cue for you.
-Go decompress when you're overwhelmed.  You may still feel functional: you should not attempt to work through it.  It will continue to haunt your processing until you go stare into the void over your water bottle and breathe for a while.  I advise going home early too, if possible.  Our emotions tire us more than we process.
-Try taking an ibuprofen or acetaminophen when you're starting to get physically tired or frazzled.  Dopamine disregulation also prevents us from modulating background pain signals adequately, I notice I get achy.  
-Exercise if you have the means and time.  Especially if there's a facility at work/home/school so you don't have to convince yourself to go to a secondary location.  Somatosensory and kinesthetic feedback good.
-If you take a break from something, go touch stuff and move around.  Again, somatosensory feedback good.  Walk around the block and touch bricks, etc.
-Use your scenery as a memory aid.  Your workspace is your working memory, your HUD.  I have told my coworkers not to move anything in my work area for this reason.  Where I have left things and what is nearby reminds me what I was doing.  Same principle as listing; all of it externally in front of you, digestible without worry of slipping your mind.  
-In tandem with above: control clutter.  Excess input that is no longer relevant will only confuse you.  Old notes, etc.  It's okay to throw things or memos out that you wanted to do but don't feel like you ever will.
-Your physical location and status ground you.  Going to specific locations to get work done, or dressing specific ways for certain tasks helps link what you're doing now to the task later, and signal to your brain that you're in focus mode.  I can't get shit done in pajamas.  If I'm not dressed by 12pm, that day is gone. 
-If you can't see it, it doesn't exist.  Chores, clothes, etc.  The best ways to store things are in plain sight.  Clear bins, cubbies, etc.  Again, your space is your brain.  Sort items in places that are relevant to their use.
-If your space makes it hard to do chores, your brain will too.  Arrange your furniture to the best of your ability in a way that facilitates easy movement and makes sense to you.
-Cut your losses sometimes.  If you cannot finish the project you started that's taking up space in your room, you're not a bad person for throwing it out.  Plants you can't save.  Art you won't finish.  Waste production is a societal problem, but you have to prioritize your mental health.  Using disposable lysol wipes instead of rags that will add to laundry, etc.  It's okay to need the time saving route.
-If you have the means, it is okay to spend extra for convenience.  That's literally why the product exists.  If it's more compact or automates something, it was built bc it will help people, especially you.  Time IS money, or for us, tasks ARE spoons.  Pay extra for delivery if you can't leave the house.  I was raised very frugal and disposable anything was very hard to justify to myself, but sometimes it is just necessary to have something DONE and not need to clean or maintain things.  You are rationing your energy, it is not laziness.
-ENCOURAGE YOUR BRAIN TO BE ITSELF.  It will feel forced, especially if you've been masking hard for years.  I had to direct myself to go touch flowers awkwardly or pick up bugs, and at first I didn't feel anything.  I just reminded myself that the bug was cool and tried to look real hard at the details.  Reminding myself I used to love this.  And then at some point I wasn't pretending anymore, and I was sending pictures of jumping spiders to my colleagues like "look what I found outside!"  That love some of us have for the present experience, the deep connection we have to our surroundings due to how much we rely on them for our processing... that is so valuable and such a source of joy.  Fight for it.  Fight your mask, fight the expectations people have for you to act a certain way, fight the notion that unbridled interest with and engagement with small details is "childish".  It is not. The world is free dopamine.  Grab heaping handfuls.  
I may write up a followup for the fundamentals of organizational tutoring; it was what really carried my ass through college/uni and more people need access to it.  
Anyway, I hope this helps someone.  Not everyone's ADHD is like mine, and not all of this is universal, but maybe you and I have enough in common that my experience is valuable to you.

DAYS 43-49

DAY FORTY-THREE
7:30 AM - Up a little early so I can close on my house. The process is pretty easy and I feel safe about it and such. We do it on the front porch with 6 foot folding table.
8:30 AM - I need to re-caulk the side door trim before I can start painting so I do that while I make my chemex. This is fun (not) because I don’t own a caulk gun. 
10:30 AM - Eat a plant yogurt
12:00 PM - Snack on chips and salsa – damn the salsa I made is so good this time. Also make salad for lunch. I’m set up in the kitchen today which is clearly a bad scene because I keep going to the pantry for more snacks. Relocate to the bedroom.
2:00 PM - I really should get my barre class out of the way today. I have a 4PM happy hour and I know I won’t want to work out after that, so I do a 10 minute low impact ride and then start class.
4:00 PM - I get done with most of the class and hop on zoom. Make refried beans in the instant pot for dinner while we chat.
5:00 PM - Finish the zoom and knock out the last 10 minutes of barre. I don’t like to split the classes up like that but oh well. 
6:00 PM - Finish making the beans as well as rice and jackfruit for burritos. K isn’t hungry so I watch an episode of The Challenge before making the burritos.
7:30 PM - Ok these are really good. Dang! I don’t want to drink tonight so I open a La Croix and try to hydrate.
DAY FORTY-THREE TOTAL: $0
DAY FORTY-FOUR
8:00 AM - I’m awake and I feel really good. K is still pretty conked out and I get the idea to go to Cartel. I haven’t been in a few months because cases were super high but now seems like a good opportunity. This is the one thing I do behind K’s back. It’s contactless and it’s super safe so I don’t really consider it to be a risk but I know he isn’t ready to drink things directly out of containers they’re served in on the same day you buy them so let’s just leave this between us. Buy a hot oat milk latte and tip $10. $17.57 
10:00 AM - Make a chemex so K doesn’t suspect anything. Hang with him on the couch for a bit and then start moving around the furniture in the kitchen to start taping.
11:30 AM - Take a break to cook breakfast - tofu/egg tacos with field roast sausage.
12:15 PM - Back to taping. It takes forev, but I think I did a good job.
3:45 PM - First coat done. Watch an episode of The challenge before I apply the second.
5:30 PM - Done with the second. Watch more of the challenge.
7:00 PM - Dinner tonight is pozole. I take my time making it and drink a glass of wine while I cook.
8:00 PM - Dang this is so delicious.
DAY FORTY-FOUR TOTAL: $17.57

9:00 AM - Woah I am SO SORE. What the hell? My quads. Make a chemex and work on putting the kitchen back together, but I run out of time and have to meet with S and her BF on zoom. K joins me and it’s a really good time. 
11:15 PM - Ok back to tape removal. 
12:15 PM - Done! / Looks good! Make more tofu tacos for breakfast.
2:00 PM - My boss is applying for citizenship in the US and she asked me to help build her a website. I have totally spaced it over the past two weeks and get cracking on it today. Make some good progress and send her what I have.
4:00 PM - Watch some episodes of The Challenge. For whatever reason this feels like the first time I’ve actually relaxed this weekend and I am here for it.
6:00 PM - We drive to a bar I DJ at on the reg during non-pandemic times to do a pick up of their Valentine’s Day special. Neither K or I are big V Day fans and we feel like this is good enough to “celebrate.” We get two veggie dogs, fries and a bottle of wine to take home. J (my friend who owns the bar) runs my card for $31ish and I tip $20. K insists he pays and he venmos me $50. $1.89
7:00 PM - I haven’t had fries in like… a year. And these ones are really delicious! The wine is good too. Spend the rest of the evening catching up on my blog. I haven’t felt very motivated to work on it this month.
8:00 PM - Get a charge from Amazon… S is buying movies again. Make a venmo request for $16 and she fulfills it. $0.19
DAY FORTY-FIVE TOTAL: $2.08
DAY FORTY-SIX
8:30 AM - WOW I am still sore WTF. Make a chemex and notice my tea kettle has a rust spot. Damnit. At this point, I would rather just buy an electric kettle with a gooseneck spout to get rid of both of my kettles, but I’m trying to stick to my budget this month. I’ve been covering K’s groceries throughout the pandemic and he owes me around $2k at this point. Because of this, I’ve kind of cut back on clothing and other frivolous purchases until he starts to pay me back so I can still save money every month. But rust is rust and I don’t want to get sick. Buy a Stagg EKG kettle with a nice wood handle. $160.62
10:00 AM - plant yogurt, a clementine and Pure Barre weekly charge. $15
12:00 PM - It’s salad time but I’m kind of out of tempeh and am a little burnt out on the miso Asian vibe anyways. Toss together some greens, bell pepper, onion, carrots, snap peas, cucumber, and a frozen Quorn spicy chicken patty and top it with cashew ranch. It’s honestly really good. 
4:00 PM - Call M to wish him a happy bday. Tell him either next Sunday or the Sunday after that we will do a lunch thing together in his backyard to celebrate. Drink a nuun while we chat.
5:15 PM - I do a pure barre workout but make the mistake of doing it on my work computer at the post-workday slacks are coming in hot this AM. My body’s HR doesn’t really pick up but I still feel proud of myself for pushing thru the soreness.
7:00 PM - K and I eat big burritos for dinner with jackfruit, beans, rice, lettuce, tofutti sour cream, cheeze, and jalapenos with chips and salsa. They’re so good and I am sad that we’re out of tortilla chips and salsa now.
8:00 PM - Since dinner was kinda big and I had fries yesterday, I spend the evening hydrating instead of drinking wine. K and I watch a 4 part docuseries on Elisa Lam & the Cecil Hotel. At some point he goes off to work on some stuff and I wrap up this website I’m building for my boss who is working on getting her green card.
DAY FORTY-SIX TOTAL: $175.62
DAY FORTY-SEVEN
9:00 AM - Make a chemex. Finish the site and send it to my boss who approves. Hopefully I don’t have to actually post it for her. I hate dealing with hosting and such. 
10:00 AM - I don’t really want yogurt today and find a small portion of tofu scramble leftover from Sunday. Heat that up and top with truffle hot sauce.
12:00 PM - Kill the rest of the salad ingredients today by making the same dish as yesterday but with peas instead of red bell peppers. Review the site I made for my boss. She sends me a $100 amazon gift card! How sweet.
5:00 PM - Get sucked in a meeting and am not able to leave until 5:30. I’m not interested in exercising this late so I zone out on the couch for a bit and snack on some gf pretzels. Start a new season of The Challenge. Drink a glass of wine.
7:00 PM - Heat up leftover pozole for dinner. Eat with K while we “watch” a hockey game. 
8:30 PM - Pour another glass of wine and chat on the phone with Q. I end up feeling super antsy halfway through our conversation and decide to take a walk. I do a nice loop down to the lake and back to my house. Next time we decide that we will walk together.
10:30 PM - I check my phone after our conversation to see 100 slack messages from various team members. Looks like there is something going on which will affect the report I have to give tomorrow. Read thru, ask some questions and feel good about what I have to change.
DAY FORTY-SEVEN TOTAL: $0
DAY FORTY-EIGHT
8:15 AM - Up a little early today so I can adjust my report. Make a chemex while I pull numbers.
9:30 AM - Present the info. It’s good stuff! My boss is out of town so I think today should be pretty chill. Get a note from my bank that the wire of leftover funds from the mortgage stuff has been transferred to my checking totaling $1250.39. 
12:00 PM - Make broccoli fried rice for lunch. Things turn chaotic for the rest of the day and by the time I know it, it’s 4:00 PM
4:15 PM - Decide to cut out early today and take a live barre class. 20 minutes in (10 minutes before 5), I get a message from my teammate asking to hop on zoom. She has computer issues so I’m actually able to finish the class before she’s ready. 
7:00 PM - Finally done working. Rinse off and make pasta for dinner. Drink 3 glasses of wine. 
9:30 PM - K and I play Mario Kart for a while before turning in.
DAY FORTY-EIGHT TOTAL: $0
DAY FORTY-NINE
8:30 AM - Today has to be more chill than yesterday… It just has to be. Make a chemex. See that my hair dresser is selling shirts for her shop. Venmo her. $25
12:00 PM - Prep chicken seitan shreds. Broccoli fried rice for lunch with seltzer. 
1:30 PM - Finish making the seitan, eat an apple, gf pretzels and carrots. I realize I forgot to eat breakfast this AM. Ugh.
5:00 PM - My butt is super sore from yesterday but I do my barre workout anyways. It’s so nice to not be interrupted. My cal burn is low but I don’t even care. It’s just nice to move.
6:00 PM - Rinse off and prep dinner. We make buffalo chicken sandwiches with roasted potatoes. They turn out pretty good and I’m excited to eat them over the next few days.
8:00 PM - Drink a glass of wine. I google if I can have more since I’m getting the COVID vaccine tomorrow and it seems like one is ok but maybe not more so I decide against it.

Fitness Diary
I took a rare moment last night to browse reddit, the r/xxfitness subreddit to be specific. Often, people ask for Instagram “fitspo” or inspiring blogs to follow. But last night, I clicked on a thread asking about the concept of “fitness diaries,” where you can read about a person’s day to day life with a focus on their fitness regimen. The closest thing that was linked refinery 29′s “wellness diaries.” This post is inspired by what I read, and a chance for me to reflect on what I do day to day to promote wellness within my life. I’m also going to take the opportunity to also include my day to day spending here, as it feels like a less stressful way to take a look at my budget. 
Saturday 8/17
Following an unexpected late day at work (in the OR until after 9:30pm), I slept in later than I usually like. One thing residency has taught me though, is to not feel badly about getting the sleep I need. After sleeping in, I headed over to a local coffee shop, and got a breakfast sandwich (egg, bacon, cheese) on a bagel with spicy cream cheese ($7.50)  Sat outside and enjoyed the food and lovely weather, with some premium dog watching. I tried to work a bit on our wedding website, but my computer had limited battery. Other things on the docket for the day; laundry and getting the quarters I need to do it, grocery shopping and meal prepping. I’ve also been interested in walking to Outdoor Voices and looking at my favorite shirt that they released in a new color, which I put off last weekend after a 24hr Friday shift and 14hr Sunday shift left me with limited time. 
In the end, I got my quarters and then took a walk to Outdoor Voices, where I bought my favorite shirt in new cactus green, then accidentally fell in love with a tank that I hadn't expected to find. I justified it as fitness motivation (totally legit, right?). Hit to my wallet; $85. After that, I sat outside on a little bench and ate a green apple I had in my backpack. Still hungry and thinking about my walk ahead, I stopped at sweet greens for a harvest bowl ($11). Spent a few lovely minutes eating it by the water, then started my trek home. Total distance walked for this portion of my day came to 7.1 miles. 
Once home, I cleaned a bit and gathered my laundry. Then, in an attempt to cut down on my morning expenditures, I made a batch of superhero muffins from my favorite cook book Run Fast, Eat Slow. Made with zucchini, carrots and almond flour, I count these muffins as a way to get vegetables into my breakfast and cut out some carbs (in comparison to days I eat a bagel for breakfast). I usually stick these muffins in the freezer, because I find they mold quickly in the summer heat of my apartment. Then, every morning, I take 2-3 out and bring to work - they are shockingly good even if they are still a bit frozen. (Though my fiance swears it is really sad that I eat them frozen, he says they taste like “sadness” because I don’t have time to let them defrost before I chow down.)
I end up meeting a friend for ceviche, and we also order fries and amazing frozen yogurt to split ($18). Then I head home and ride a 30 minute peloton ride while the wash cycle on my laundry is going. Emma Lovewell kills me on this ride, but during the cool down I notice I’m about 3 away from beating my 30minute PR, so I power through the cool down instead of taking it easy. New PR! Then bonus 4 flights of stairs one way to get my laundry. 
5 minute core workout. I can’t bring myself to do the full 10 minute program I’ve been doing, but 5 is better than none. Plus I have that new tank to motivate me! Shower then off to bed.
Total distance walked: 8.09 miles
Total Peloton Peloton’d: 30 minutes + 5 minute core
Total day cost: $121.5 (eek!)
Planning to post later tonight with my Sunday. Hopefully I can be more succinct and spend less....

My weight is something that has always fluctuated and that I’ve always had a hard time with, even when I was dancing all the time and trying all sorts of “diets.” Over the past two years I found myself in a really dark place, and the weight started piling on for a number of reasons. No, I’m not telling you that as an excuse--it isn’t one. I simply wasn’t taking care of myself like I should’ve been. I was eating fairly well but not well enough, skipping meals I just felt too tired to eat (and sometimes, I’d go an entire day without one), and when I’d go to the gym, I wouldn’t do much more than the elliptical for an hour or a half hour plus some resistance training that really wasn’t challenging me. I knew I needed to work differently, but I had no motivation and my heart just wasn’t in it at all. The combination of graduate school and work was, to be frank, kicking my ass. On top of that, my social life had become nonexistent, I had no boyfriend, and didn’t really feel like I had anyone aside from two close friends who no longer even live in the same city to talk to.

I’d always been thicker for a dancer, at my fittest usually being mistaken for a cheerleader or gymnast. This was also the time when I was extremely involved with martial arts, which literally shredded my fat in those tougher spots right off. I’d gone from literal fighting shape with a six-pack to fat, and on my kind of build (which is average height and very curvy), even being a little chubby shows. 
So here I was, in this dance class for a style I’d never tried before feeling very much like a potato among shorter, more toned versions of Victoria’s Secret models. It was a bit overwhelming to say the least, though it was fun.

I tried cutting carbs (more on that later), had a brief and desperate stint of limiting myself to one small meal a day (unhealthy and disastrous--I gained weight), and several other things that were so ineffective they aren’t worth mentioning. I thought that maybe despite my age my metabolism had already begun slowing down rapidly. 
Not knowing what else to do, I decided to see a nutritionist. 
We started meeting regularly, and she worked to figure out what exactly was going on. On paper, I wasn’t eating particularly badly: I had a few off days here and there, but combined with the amount of exercise I was getting daily (from walking back and forth to work and class, those 3-4x a week gym sessions, plus the new dance class additions), she had a little trouble deciphering what was wrong at first. I was particularly frustrated--I’d lost weight before, dropped my body fat percentage to a staggeringly low but still healthy amount for a female, and yet nothing I was doing now seemed to be working. My weight just fluctuated naturally as it always had. I had my resting metabolic rates checked, and some other tests run too.
Well, I thought when everything checked out to be within normal range, at least I was finally having some fun. It still wasn’t enough for me, though. Not really. I’d dance around my apartment, listening to the kinds of music I used to dance to--hip-hop in particular. It always had been my strongest style, and I decided to try out the studio’s advanced class. I kicked it into high gear. As much as I may not often admit it I’m a highly competitive person. I see either someone who’s better than me at something and what to get to their level or surpass them, or I see myself and want to overcome that current self and transform it into something better. This, for better or worse, was exactly the blend of both I needed. I could dance like the people around me, and where I was a little rusty I knew I could get back, but I didn’t look as strong as them just because of my body.

I also make good use of frozen fruits that keep forever and that I can throw into a blender with some Greek yogurt. Breakfast is often something like a grilled chicken breast with eggs (my ultimate weaknesses is Chick-fil-A’s egg white grill when I need a speedy breakfast on the go), a poached egg with half an avocado and a slice of wheat toast, or something along those lines. I’ve also tried the toast + peanut butter + banana thing, though it was a bit sweet for my taste. Lunch is a bit broader: I enjoy salads but not enough to have them daily, and lunch admittedly tends to be my least healthy meal of the day. I had a cheeseburger today for example, which I do not recommend, but if you’re going to do something like that, just make sure you’re opting for a side salad or something similar instead of fries. My aim for lunch tends to be a light salad or a something like a burrito bowl with very little to no rice. I focus on lean meats and vegetables for both lunch and dinner, so depending on what I’ve prepped or am planning to make/have, I make the according adjustments to my lunch. 
One thing I cut out completely--and a cut that pains me as it will my fellow Southerners--is sweet tea. I love sweet tea. I grew up on sweet tea and it’s quite literally the taste of home. This is something I had to ween myself off of over the course of a couple weeks on the days I ate out, ordering 1/2 sweet, 1/2 unsweet drinks. I’m happy to say I’ve already broken the habit, and it’s already become natural for me to order or make unsweet tea and either drink it as is or add just a pinch of natural sweetener in. Likewise, I cut back on sugary coffee drinks, though that wasn’t as difficult for me. I don’t mind the taste of black coffee, so that’s all well and good.
Once I did all of these things, I started noticing little things. Those leggings that had been too tight suddenly started to fit perfectly. My workout pants that I’d gone a size up on because of my chubbier areas started falling off--literally, to the point where I constantly have started having to pull them back up. My stomach and waist area--which is the one and only area I always have lost weight quickly in--has already gone from being jiggly to flat. My lovely (yes, this is sarcasm) Viking arms I inherited from my dad and my thick cyclist legs I inherited from my mom are already slimming down and toning. I started bodyweight circut classes and free weights again, though I definitely still enjoy my resistance days. It turns out I don’t need any additional cardio now that I’m dancing again, and I really only do short stints of it for stamina purposes.
And suddenly, it’s all been put into perspective. 
My biggest block was settling for not enough. 
I was eating in a more healthy way than the average person, but it wasn’t enough. I was working out regularly, but not in a way that was enough. I had no real routine or regulation for what I was eating beyond just staying under a certain calorie count, and not a good enough routine in the gym.
I’m not saying don’t go get on that elliptical or treadmill if that’s something that makes you feel good and helps you. Everybody’s different. Some people really can drop weight as long as they’re up and moving, and it really doesn’t matter what they do during that time. Others, like myself, need more specific exercise, and from experience I know mine is a combination of dance or martial arts and weights/bodyweight. Running does nothing. Ellipticals do nothing. Cycling does nothing. I have to do weights, and I have to have workouts that engage my entire body.
I’m happy to say within the past month of really hitting it this hard, not only have I lost weight, but I’m nearly down a size in everything (the latter of which is more over the course of two months). It really was just making the right changes and remembering what works for me, along with figuring out the new things that work for me since I obviously no longer live under my parents’ roof like I’d done the first time I’d really gotten fit. I had to figure out a way to cook for myself and make the right decisions when I do get fast food. I had to really start putting in the right work at the gym.
And you know what? It’s worth it.
I’ve even developed something of a social life through my classes again, and I’m loving every minute of it. It’s worth it to go into those classes and meet people, encourage them while they encourage you, and let them help to make you the best you can be through their sheer dedication and skill. 
As for the darker mental side of it all, depression and anxiety don’t go away, but you can train yourself to push through them again, and you might just find those spells starting to dwindle a bit when you do. For me in every way, shape, or form, these changes have all been worth it. 
Find what works for you and go for it not halfway, but all out.

Favorite Binge Food? I don’t binge-eat. But if you mean, like, a guilty pleasure/indulgence? Frozen yogurt with oreo crumbs and way too many sprinkles. 
What made you want to lose weight? Well, my shunt failing back in 2014 was a HUGE wake-up call to my own mortality...And then--this is going to sound weird--but I was actually watching Daredevil on Netflix when it first came out, and I thought about how fit he was. I thought, Man, I need to get into better shape. And I have been eating better and working on my fitness ever since!
Favorite Exercise? Power walking or crunches.
What Makes You Slip Up? My sweet tooth, and vacations (everyone should splurge now and then!)
What Makes You Strong? Knowing how my very life is a gift, and I shouldn’t take this body for granted. It is able and capable, so I should challenge it to be its best.
How Many Calories Do You Consume A Day? Roughly 1,700, slightly more if I exercise.
What Do You See When You Look In The Mirror? A body that is able and capable, and getting healthier by the day.
Are You Depressed? Not sure...I have anxiety, so dealing with it is a mental burden that not a lot of people understand, which only makes me worry about the physical ramifications of anxiety. And also, my grandma just passed away this past September, so it’s been rough ever since...
Ever Been To A Psychologist? Yes, because of anxiety.
Are You On Any Medication? Currently, yes, for anxiety, plus allergies and asthma.
Favorite time to workout? Ideally, early afternoon.
Favorite workout shirt? In fall/winter, anything with thumbholes; in spring/summer, this blue cotton tank that one of my best friends gave me.

Exercise you dislike most? I don’t like getting super out of breath, because I have asthma and it freaks me out. I also don’t do heavy weight-lifting, so those are a no-go.

How do you get to your place of working out? Just walk outside!
Would you workout if you didn’t have to in order to stay fit and healthy? I slacked off too much in college...Knowing how I feel now vs. how I felt then, I would. It wears me out to sleep better, and I have energy the next day.

hey, you know what’s really fun, but also essentially impossible? doing things after a dog barks directly into your ear hole before sunrise the third morning in a row!!!
this time it was really cool because i had taken the dogs out around 12:30 right before i went to bed so that cleo would not feel motivated to wake me up BEFORE 5 AM again. but later in the morning i found out that she actually just barked at my mom and dad to let her out literally every single hour between 12 and 5. and then when they kicked her out of their room to try and sleep a little bit she came back up to my room and jumped on my face and barked in my ear. so i kicked all the dogs out and she RATTLED MY DOOR AND HOWLED AGAIN ALLLLLLLLLLLLL MORNING!!! also she managed to soil two spots on the carpet near the stairs somehow, despite it only being less than four hours between trips outside. 
so i gave up trying to sleep before my alarm went off at 9. then i fed the dogs and let them outside and cleaned up the poop. then i went back in my room and internally cried for a good 15 minutes before i finally got in the shower. i was almost too tired to, but i did shave my legs and clip my nails and wash my hair and brush all of my teeth. i wanted so badly to go back to sleep but by then it was after 10 and i am trying not to take naps because i don’t like having obnoxious nightmares and also it messes up my sleep schedule.
i must have done things in the morning but i don’t really remember... i watched some youtube videos. i will stop eventually... 
i was really too tired to even think about dealing with anyone today so i didn’t look up local activities to try. poor wiley was hot and tired even indoors. 
i had my thai leftovers for lunch and caught on fire. someday i will learn. i think it burned so much it just made me completely forget about my usual stomach pain and nausea. after that i got out some dry dust wipes and cleaned out half the window blinds and the little tables by the couches. tomorrow i will do the other half. 
my head really hurts... i spent a while today going through some steam recommendations in preparation for the summer steam sale. i figure, the more games i find that i’d like, the more likely it will be that at least one of them will become affordable with my budget during the sale.
mom said we could go out for ice cream/frozen yogurt after dinner since my brother and i had done our chores almost every day the whole week. then she forgot! she agreed to do it tomorrow, but i don’t really believe her. maybe i will just kidnap my brother and drive us over to the frozen yogurt place.
ummm i don’t recall a lot between that and dinner. oh, i stole the bag of hershey’s chocolate and ate a few and then returned it saying “i desire no more chocolate.” 
and i had to sort through a bunch of old books looking for ones i wanted to keep. i found some pretty interesting ones! and i wanted to save my dream analysis book because i like it and should probably take another look at it. but i found some really REALLY dumb books my parents have bought over the years. “how to choose the sex of your baby!!!” the dreaded Puberty Book and A Whole Bunch Of Life/Relationship/Woman Advice From White Dudes I Dont Care About. also apparently we had like five variations of the chicken soup for the soul books but i only ever recall reading one. there was a story about a kid that died from like cancer (i think she wasn’t christian? it was chicken soup for the christian teenage soul so the narrator probably said she went to hell) and i cried really hard when i read it and didn’t pick up the books ever again after that. 
so i don’t know why there were five of them.
hahaha mom had over a dozen books on management efficiency that looked like she had gotten them when she was studying to be an accountant. and dad’s zillion books on history (mostly us history). he actually, like, had books that weren’t written by white dudes sometimes? so i don’t know how he turned out so racist. 
mom made spaghetti for dinner. it was fine. i buried it under a mountain of parmesan cheese. while we were eating mom mentioned we would be in hawaii for an extra three days after the rest of the family left. i just about dropped my head into the tomato sauce. but then i heard we would be hanging with my late aunt joyce’s daughter and her family! 
my brother asked who she was and mom said “oh, you know, my cousin. you’ve met her before.” and my brother said “ok who is she” and mom said “i could say something that will make you remember” and my brother said “ok who is she” and mom said “the one with the girlfriend.”
my brother made a disgusted face. “oh. why are we spending time with her.”

when he saw me he said “i don’t have a problem with stuff like that, i just find it strange.” 
and mom said “it’s very strange.” 
and i said “YOU’RE strange.” 
“everyone is strange,” my brother agreed. “but that’s really strange.”
“your hair is strange,” i interrupted.
dad made some asinine comment about how i tolerate any opinion. i said “no” and my brother was about to say something but i cut him off. “you’re sixteen, i don’t respect your opinion.” he thought that was pretty funny so that got us off the topic and instead arguing about how much of an old fart i am.
later when i was back upstairs i sent a message to asher. “fortunately, this has not changed my coming-out plans of ‘never.’”
when the sun went down i took wiley over to the mailbox. it was still too hot though and he didn’t even protest that much when we went back inside like 6 minutes later.
then i spent the evening watching a bunch of youtube videos! i finished the queue i had lined up instead of coloring the owls. probably gonna do that in the morning. i will pencil it into my schedule as a suggestion. i ran out of time tonight because i saw that folding ideas had finally uploaded another video. 
oh, and marisol came and picked up her dogs. she apologized for cleo being such a butt and i helped her load them and their supplies into the car. i think she had planned on paying me? but it didn’t feel right pressing about it while she was exhausted. and i don’t remember if she actually offered to pay me or what i might have said about not worrying about it. i do need the money... but it would be awkward to ask. wouldn’t it? but i can’t wait like a whole week. maybe i should talk about that with my therapist tomorrow.
because, like, i don’t really mind watching her dogs? but it was a huge time and energy investment for me and it did prevent me from working on/thinking about a bunch of stuff for therapy because i was so god dang tired. and it would feel weird at this point to do such a huge favor for literally nothing. yet again!!! 
i don’t even really feel greedy about it? at this point i recognize that letting people thank me for doing things, or letting them chip in for gas if i’m driving us somewhere or whatever, actually is more helpful to everyone than insisting on shouldering the whole cost. because it helps your guests feel less awkward and it does really relieve some of that pressure on the favor-doer. like, usually my friends (real friends at least) like to help out as much as i do! and i always feel kind of put out and nervous when they don’t let me help, like maybe they will call on the incident later in a bad light or that they are burning themselves out. so i don’t put them in that situation, just by accepting their offers.
but if they don’t make the offer and i still ask for compensation am i an asshole at that point? or is that an assertive thing to do?
i am going to call it a night just a little bit early tonight... i want that extra twenty minutes of potential sleep. or at least laying quietly in the dark not hearing any loud annoying noises. eve’s snoring is ok. she is not loud and annoying.
oh, one more thing. today i unfriended a couple people on facebook. i also found a few of my recent classmates and added them instead. i unfriended a couple villanova classmates that regularly tag craig in their posts... sometimes along with me. THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!!!!!
since by “not taking a side” at the time and essentially ignoring me when i started becoming a suicidal recluse as i realized no one liked me (at least, liked me more than they liked craig), i decided to circumvent the whole awkward conversation and just unfriend them instead of asking them to tag either me or craig, but not both, in their posts. because they’re just gonna tag craig anyway and just phase me out of their social media even more. 
because you know what? i don’t care about them either. i’m not interested in salvaging my friendship with people i haven’t seen in years and weren’t even really all that nice to me when i was in classes with them. 
sometimes you just gotta bail. and that’s ok. i’ve done it before many times. there isn’t really any point in hanging out with people who value their friendships with predators more than they value the safety of their other friends. my social circle is smaller, but the lack of actual predatory men who have actually violated other people (sometimes, but not always, me) is worth it.
i feel like that’s something i am having trouble getting my therapist to understand. and every time i try to bring up examples to show the rationale behind my decisions and habits, she tells me i’m living in the past and need to let it go. 
ok, yeah, i should probably let it go sometimes. and also, not just live moment to moment without considering how people have acted in the past when making decisions in the present! because that’s what learning is!!!
i can’t figure out a good note to end this on. when i think i’ve come to a conclusion i find that i have more words to spew out on the page. so i will go to bed now. i hope you are doing ok.

Kind of problems they usually run into: Used to be stuff like evil Power Rangers, giant monsters, and intergalactic evil space beings. But now it’s, like, heated class discussions and Prof. Tanner taking her favorite parking spot in the teacher’s parking lot.

6 self-care steps for a pandemic — always important, now essential
Airline attendants say it well: if the plane hits turbulence and the oxygen masks come down, place a mask on yourself first before turning to help others. This is absolutely critical. If we don’t, we may not be able to help anyone.
Well, we’ve all hit the same turbulence, folks, and we all need to take good care of ourselves, our bodies, and our minds.
Healthcare providers on the front lines of the coronavirus pandemic absolutely have to be functioning well in order to do their jobs well. At such a stressful time, with so much change and uncertainty, combined with the pressures of patient care during this pandemic, it almost seems like too much. How are people like doctors holding it together? Could we all learn from their tips on coping?
This week, I reached out to my colleagues in the Massachusetts General Hospital Healthy Lifestyle Program to find out. We’re all primary care physicians within the Division of General Internal Medicine who have been urgently redeployed to new and different jobs, such as staffing our makeshift COVID-19 surge clinics, learning new technology to provide much-needed telehealth, and creating serious illness plans with our most at-risk patients.
During a period when stress and fear are running high, these six strategies from my colleagues can help.
Acknowledge the turbulence
Ben Crocker, MD, is the medical director of a large primary care practice and a healthy lifestyle advocate. “Social distancing and the loss of work and/or routine are tremendous pressures, both physically and psychologically,” he says. “At the same time, our society tends to specifically reward heroic efforts that show that we can continue to perform at the same level, all while keeping a brave face. Many people are struggling to work full-time remotely while simultaneously caring full-time for their family at home. Those who continue to work on the front lines may feel the need to overload their schedules, or commit to too much.”
His advice on this is relevant to everyone, not just front-line providers. Check in, he urges. Mourn your losses. And check out, too.
“Check in with yourself,” says Dr. Crocker. With so much news and instructions flying around about what to do and how to do it, take time to listen to what your body and mind need.
During such frantic times we may tend to ignore acknowledging the loss of “the way things were.” We forget to mourn, or grieve, or simply express our sadness about not being able to socialize, see a close friend, attend a favorite exercise class, interact with neighbors and family, or worship collectively. Grant yourself the time and space to acknowledge your loss. This can help you stay grounded with the current state of life.
“And allow yourself to physically, mentally, emotionally check out on a regular basis,” he adds. “Intentionally create ‘shutdown’ time in your schedule. This can be healthy time alone, for meditation and quietude.”
Fuel your body with healthy food
Helen Delichatsios, MD, has a degree in nutrition and runs healthy cooking classes for her patients.
“In times such as these, nutrition and healthy eating can easily fall to the wayside,” she says. “However, if anything, it is more important than ever to appropriately fuel our bodies and to do so in a mindful way. We have increased physical and mental stress, and healthy eating is vital in supporting our immune system to stave off illness and recuperate faster if we fall ill.”
Anne Thorndike, MD, usually works in the cardiometabolic center, helping people at high risk for heart disease change the way they eat and live. “We’re all eating at home more,” she notes. “This is a great time to explore new recipes you’ve been meaning to try. Be creative with what you have stocked in the house. Plan your grocery list so you have the basics on hand for healthy meals. Frozen vegetables and fruits are a great option when you can’t buy fresh produce on a regular basis.”
Amy Wheeler, MD, is also certified in obesity medicine and runs healthy lifestyle sessions for patients. At home, she’s been adapting healthy recipes she usually makes with fresh ingredients by using simple substitutes. Try her easy, adaptable recipe for Quarantine Chili for a family of five:
“Last night, I diced an onion and potato, then added one chicken breast cut in chunks, 1/2 small can diced green chilies, 1/4 cup salsa, 3 to 4 teaspoons paprika, 1 teaspoon cumin, a sprinkle of cheese, some leftover rice, 1 can yellow corn, and 1 can tomatoes. Once the chicken is cooked, try a dollop of Greek yogurt on top instead of sour cream.”
Use fresh ingredients if you have them, or canned or frozen if you don’t. Goes nicely with tortillas, but it’s also great right out of a bowl.
Move your body
“We are all spending less time commuting, driving our kids around, and doing errands,” says Dr. Thorndike. “Use the extra time to take a walk or do some exercise at home. Even housework can be a way to be physically active!”
Dr. Wheeler finds it helps to set SMART goals: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Timed. These are by definition small steps that are easy to achieve, and thus fuel motivation.
“I have been making little SMART goals for myself,” she says. “Daily goals like ‘I will take a 20-minute walk outside at 10 am today, while wearing my mask and performing social distancing.’ Or ‘I will find three flowers with different colors on my walk.’ Helps me get out of my PJs, off the laptop, and appreciating nature — very relaxing!”
Prioritize sleep
Our bodies need sufficient sleep in order to function. Me, I’ve been working hard to keep a schedule, setting my alarm for my usual early morning time, and going to bed just after my kids. This helps to ensure I get a solid eight hours of sleep, so that I’ll be at my best when I’m called into clinic.
It can help to see the light — and dark (literally). “Spend time outside in nature,” Dr. Crocker suggests. “Exposure to the visible diurnal rhythms of the day/night is an added benefit.” For additional tips on getting the rest you need, see this blog on sleep strategies for uncertain times.
Find ways to connect socially
Dr. Delichatsios loves to cook at home and has been having virtual dinner parties.
“Why don’t you invite some people over for dinner?” she suggests “In our family, we call them FaceTime Dinners, Zoom Dinners, or Skype Dinners. These platforms have allowed us to ‘go out to dinner’ and connect with many friends and families, when before we were often too busy to meet up in person.”
Dr. Crocker has a great suggestion that can be a win-win for working parents and their relatives. “With school out, if you have kids and any extended family, invite the relative (grandparent, aunt, uncle) to teach an online lesson once a week on the same topic or a rotating topic. Allow that special bonding time between your child and their relative to unburden your time.”
He also found a way to continue choir singing from home. “Try a different way of connecting with friends and colleagues — a chat room, or Zoom meeting over a meal. I joined a 20-voice choir that I’ve never physically sung with and sang in a recorded five-part arrangement — all from my home!”
Find ways to ease stress
Everything you’ve read to this point can help you manage stress and anxiety. Eating healthy, being active, and getting enough sleep all help us to mitigate the effects of stress and anxiety on our bodies. One more technique is positive thinking.
Remembering and acknowledging the good in our lives is a powerfully positive action. “Practicing gratitude for what we still have — our health, our families, our homes, food, whatever it may be — rather than rehearsing the daily ‘loss’ of life and routine as we know it, is an important health practice,” notes Dr. Crocker.
In our household, we take turns saying grace before we eat dinner. One part of grace is to state something we’re grateful for, and usually it ends up being a bunch of things, sometimes silly ones like our cats cuddling with us, or the sun shining. But it always makes us smile!

I'm a 5'10", 160 lb guy that just turned 42 a couple weeks ago. I rarely see progress posts from older people, so hopefully some of you 40+ folks will see this and post your own stories; I'd love to see them.
  During my 20s and 30s, I mostly sat in front of a computer for 8+ hours a day, rarely exercised, and never really paid any attention to my diet. As a result, my weight slowly ballooned from about 155 in my early 20s, to ~190 at my peak in my early 30s. At 190 lbs, a helpful friend pointed out that I was fat (it happened slowly and I honestly couldn't see it), and I was able to bring my weight back down to a more reasonable 175 relatively quickly through cardio and programs like P90X. I never attempted to adjust my diet because I believed that exercise was the key to weight loss.
  Throughout my 30s and early 40s, I hovered around 175 lbs, where I basically looked "fine" - at least with a shirt on, anyway. I knew I was out of shape, but I had neither the motivation nor knowledge to make changes to my physique.
  I started taking my health more seriously when I hit 40, and I took up running. I've always been a terrible runner, and had awful shin splints when first starting out. It took me several weeks to get to the point where I could run a single mile at a ridiculous 12-13 minute pace, but I was ecstatic at the time. I stuck with it, and over the next year I worked my way up to ~30 miles per week. My 5K mile pace was down to about 7:20 and I felt really good about myself. I felt fit for the first time since my teenage years!
  Even then, my physique hadn't changed much. I'd dropped a few pounds, but I still had a decent belly and no muscle to speak of - I was pretty much the definition of skinny fat.
  Everything changed just over a year ago, in October 2017. I was visiting a friend that happened to be into bodybuilding, and I agreed to join him for a workout. Until that day, I had never touched a barbell in my life. The most I'd ever done with weights was some curls with light dumbbells in my living room while watching TV.
  That day was a serious wake-up call. I had always assumed that I was about average as far as strength went, but on that day I discovered that I was weak AF! My friend took me through the big 4 lifts, and the only one that I didn't feel completely embarrassed by was squats, where I able to successfully complete 4x12 reps with the empty bar, although I seriously struggled. I could only overhead press the empty bar for 3-4 reps, and had to drop down to something like 12.5 pound dumbbells to get a full 12. Similarly, I could only bench the empty bar for maybe 5-6 reps. It was a real shitshow!
  That's the day that I decided I needed some muscles. So I jumped into weightlifting.
  TL;DR version: Was skinny-fat for all of my adult life, realized I was also weak af recently, decided to change!
Training
As an absolute beginner, I stumbled onto this subreddit and found the recommended workout routines. I thought I'd give the dumbbell stopgap routine a try for 2-3 months, because I already had a set of adjustable dumbbells, and I wasn't yet sure if I wanted to join a gym, or just install equipment in my basement. So that's what I did, and if nothing else it got me used to scheduling workout time into my day.
  In late January 2018, I bought a power rack, olympic bar & plates, and bench and set them up in my basement (pic of my setup if anyone is interested). I decided on Phrak's full-body 3-day LP program, as it was geared toward beginners.
  I stuck with Phrak's for about 3 months and saw some pretty good beginner gains. I went from struggling with the empty bar on all movements to 5x70 OHP, 5x110 BP, 5x150 SQ, 5x155 DL (no idea on 1RMs). Still weak, but improving!
  Around May of this year, I switched over to a 5-day nSuns 5/3/1 program. The volume increase compared to Phrak's was a bit shocking, but I stuck with it. I decided to do nSuns on a cut, which in hindsight may have been a mistake, but I still managed to make some pretty good gains. By November my 1RM looked like: OHP 110 lbs, BP 160 lbs, SQ 245 lbs (no idea on deadlift; I'm scared to go too heavy). Compared to some of the numbers I see you guys and girls throwing around, I'm still weak - but I feel a whole lot better about myself!
  I recently started a bulk and switched to a PPL split to mix things up a bit, but I'll probably return to nSuns at some point to try it while bulking.
  On weekends, I run (both Saturday and Sunday). Usually not more than 10 miles per week.
  TL;DR version: Started my weightlifting journey with a dumbbell-only program for a couple months, graduated to a full-body 3-day barbell program for 3 months, been doing a 5-day barbell split program since. Went from struggling with the empty bar to (barely!) benching my weight, and squatting ~1.5x my weight in roughly a year.
Diet
Probably the most important adjustment I made was to start using MyFitnessPal around the time I started lifting. Going from guessing about my daily caloric/protein intake to having detailed information has made a tremendous difference.
  Other than logging everything with MFP in order to hit my calorie goals (~1600 while cutting / ~2200 while bulking), I shoot for at least 150g of daily protein.
  I meal prep once per week, and thus tend to eat mostly the same things on weekdays. A typical day might look like:
  Breakfast:
shake (1/2 frozen banana, 8 oz almond milk, 1 serving greek yogurt, spinach, 1 tbsp flax seeds, whey protein)
2 eggs
toast or light english muffin
  Snack 1:
cereal (something low sugar like Cheerios) with almond milk & blueberries
  Lunch:
5 oz chicken breast or thigh
100g brown rice OR 6 oz sweet potato
green vegetable (broccoli, brussell sprouts, etc)

shake (almond milk, casein protein - maybe peanuts and/or oats if I'm bulking)
  On weekends I typically eat what I want, though I always try to hit 150g+ protein. I still track my calories but I don't beat myself up too much if I'm out with friends and go over by a bunch. I'm a social drinker and probably average 3-4 drinks per week (usually weekends).
Supplements
Whey protein wherever I need it to hit my protein goal, although usually I find that I can get there with mostly real food.
One scoop of casein protein before bed on lifting days.
5g creatine daily - just started this a few weeks ago and haven't really noticed any difference.
Goals/Questions
My main goal is to put on some more muscle mass while staying relatively lean. From my reading, it seems like most of you recommend alternating cut/bulk cycles to accomplish this. My last cut put me at just over 150 lbs, and my plan is to bulk up to 175 lbs or so and then cut again - with the understanding that the "ideal me" (more muscle, less fat) probably weighs around 160-165 lbs. Does that make sense?
I do want to also improve my running, which has taken a backseat to weightlifting this past year. I know the two goals (lifting / running) aren't that compatible, so if anyone has any advice/tips I'd love to hear it!
I'd like to improve my numbers a bit more, maybe eventually hit 1.5x bodyweight bench and 2x bw squat. I'm assuming that just continuing to put in the work will allow me to eventually hit those numbers, although my progress is definitely slower than many of you (I'm 42, so that's not unexpected either). Any suggestions?

I had baked Choco-Chip muffins a few days back but I didn’t do any post on it, though I had taken pics of muffins for Choco-Chip muffin doing a post. This Choco-Chip cake recipe is a quick bread recipe. You can make muffins, loaf, cake using this recipe with little variation in the liquid ingredients. The recipe uses eggs but you can replace eggs with buttermilk or yogurt or any other egg-replacer to get the eggless version. The whole house was filled with the warm and nice aroma of baked cake. As soon as my daughter entered the house said what’s special today, it smells so good.. it’s either Choco Chips Cookies or Cake. My son was a bit unwell so he didn’t eat any and asked me to keep some for him for the other day. The elder one asked me to pack some pieces for her friends for the next day’s lunch. The cake was soft, fluffy and a yummy treat for them with a glass of hot chocolate milk.
For this Choco-Chip cake, I have used Vanilla Bean Paste for flavoring. You can use your regular Vanilla extract or essence. I usually use small chips for the cake or muffins. If you don’t have any chips in hand, then you can also use any good baking chocolate. Chop in chunks(as per your required size) and add to the batter. Pls note, the texture of Whole Wheat Cakes is little dense as compared to all-purpose flour cakes. Also I have not used any baking soda in it. If you are making the eggless version please add 1/2 tsp baking soda along woth any egg-replacers. Pls see notes in the recipe card.
Let’s see how I bake this Choco-Chip Cake.
Choco-Chip Cake
Kids favourite Whole Wheat soft and fluffy Choco-chip cake.
2 Cups Whole Wheat Flour
1 Cup Butter
3/4 Cup Castor Sugar
1/2 Cup Brown Sugar
2 nos. Eggs
1 Cup Chocolate Chips
1 Tsp Vanilla Beans
1 Tsp Baking Powder
1 Cup Milk (use as required)
Pre-heat oven at 400F or 200 C.
  Mix together flour and baking powder.
In a bowl beat both the sugar and butter together.
Beat in eggs one by one. Don’t overbeat the eggs as the batter can curdle. Add vanilla beans and mix in the batter.
Fold in flour with light hands. If you are making cake, add some milk to adjust the consistency of the batter. The cake batter should be of dropping consistency.
Dust the choco chips lightly with flour, and fold in the batter.
Transfer batter to the pan lined with parchment paper, add some more chips to the batter and bake at 400F or 200C for 35-40 minutes.
Check for doneness by doing the toothpick test. Insert a toothpick in the center of the cake it should have crumbs when taken out. 
Take out the cake from cake tin and cool on wire rack. Once cooled, store in an air-tight container.
Cake stays good for 4-5 days when refrigerated and can be frozen also for about a month. I never froze it as this finishes within 2-3 days.
All-purpose flour can be used instead of Whole Wheat flour. Only reduce the amount of milk as all-purpose flour soaks less milk than whole wheat flour. 
As mentioned in my other posts also, we like to have moderately sweet desserts,  you can increase the amount of sugar as per your requirement but not more than the amount of flour used. Keep the total amount of sugar 1/4 Cup less than the amount of flour used. e.g if you have used 2 cups sugar than use a total of 1 3/4 cup of both sugars in total, not more than that otherwise the cake will be overly sweet.
Add more of brown sugar in proportion to castor sugar will give a little dark color to the cake.
For Eggless cake add 1/2 Tsp of baking soda in flour along with baking powder. Also, you can use1/2 buttermilk or yogurt as egg-replacers. Adjust the consistency by adding the required quantity of milk
The Choco-chip cake it was soft, had a good crumb and kids loved it . The only thing that I was not happy was that I baked I baked in a pan that was not deep. I wanted to bake a round cake for the post but should have used a deep round pan to get the right height. I usually bake this in loaf pan, didn’t know why I choose this round pan. Will update the pics whenever next I bake it in a loaf pan or a deep round pan or a loaf pan of 7X4. Baking time and temperatures remain the same.
