Okay, I've been sitting on this chapter for a couple of months, telling myself I won't post it until chapter 12 is finished. I've decided to post it in the hopes that it might jolt me into writing a little something each day..
So yeah.. I hope you all like it. Also, if you're a greens lover, this ones for you đ Chapters - 11/? Fandom - The Powerpuff Girls Characters - Blossom, Bubbles, Buttercup, Brick, Butch, Boomer Tags - Slightly AU, aged up characters, future fic, married life, adulthood, parenthood, drama, romance Sequel to Poison & Wine - best to be familiar with this story for clarity Summary - Blossom has some demons to face, Bubbles has some demons to beat, and Buttercup has three demons to raise, thanks to Butch. PPG & RRB in their mid 30's trying to navigate adult life, marriage and parenthood - slightly AU but not really. âChapter 11: Thatâs top Dad-ing if you ask meâ snippet: The blonde puff had gotten to her feet, her youngest daughter hovering behind her. Boomer sighed with relief, glad to see her smiling and hoping he could keep her spirits up so sheâd find Christmas as enjoyable as she usually did.
âGrandpa and Grandma brought the Christmas cookies we made at theirs the other day over - we should leave him one of them!â Bridget proposed to her mother and cousins, who nodded back in approval.
âAnd a glass of milk.â Bonnie suggested.
âI dunno, I think Santa prefers a glass of whisky, or maybe rum.â Buttercup interjected, eliciting a smirk from Bubbles.
The blonde puffruff considered this. âWeâll leave him both.â
âWe gotta put carrots out for the reindeer too.â Rosalie added. âBut there are nine reindeers so we need to leave out nine carrots, okay? Not just one - it isnât fair.â The young puffruff said, folding her arms across her chest.
âNine carrots? You wanna leave nine carrots out?â Butch reiterated, and the young girl nodded at her uncle.
âMaking nine reindeers share one carrot, when theyâre doing so much work - itâs inhumane!â She insisted.
Brick shrugged at his brother. âShe wonât budge on it.â
âNine carrots it is.â Butch murmured with a smirk.
"Nine carrots, Christmas cookies, milk and whisky - Santa and his reindeer sure are lucky this year.â Bubbles commented as she poured some hot cocoa into a mug from the pot on the stove.
âItâs pretty low payment for 24 hours straight of work.â Blake muttered idly from the sofa. âBeing paid in cookies and alcohol seems pretty inhumane to me too.â
Rosalie blinked at her brotherâs words, before turning to her father. âMaybe you should leave him some cash too, Daddy. Does $50 seem fair?â
Brick scoffed at the suggestion. âI think Christmas costs me enough as it is.â He murmured in reply, as Blossom slapped him on the arm lightly as she passed him.
âSanta doesnât need money, sweetie.â The pink puff assured her daughter, scooping down low to pick her up and snuggle her into her arms. âSeeing happy children all over the world is payment enough for him. And the cookies and yummy drinks are just an added bonus.â
But Rosalie didnât look convinced. âSanta sounds like a chump to me.â

1826 Monday 24 April
6 5/60
11 3/4
Read over, sealed, and took down for the post my letter written yesterday to âMrs Lawton Dr Belcombeâs King Street Scarbroâ - wrote a note to Mr Sunderland to ask for his bill for attendance etc on my uncle and [deed?] which took me till 7 1/4 - Dressed - took up tome iv. de Faublas - Charles Howarth came at 9, and James Holt in about 1/4 hour gave the latter the paper had written (before dressing) authorizing him as my agent and Charles Howarth to go down into the pits to inspect and measure them -
About 9 1/4 one of Mrs Macauleyâs sons came with a message from his mother to say she understood from Gill who I suppose a tenant of hers, that the fence-wall between her wood and the great stubbing field let to Mark Hepworth at yew trees was my uncleâs fence - said I believed this was a mistake - that my uncle had built the wall thinking it a pity there should be no fence at all, but we had kept from repairing it, because it was not of right our fence - a few shillings - 2 or 3 shillings would do all that was necessary to it - it was a good wall - I wished to be upon as good terms as possible with all my neighbours - at all rates, we should not disagree about such a trifle be it as it might - but I would send Jackman to speak to Mrs Macauley - the young man mentioned that there was a bit of very bad fence Sowden ought to make - he cut the wood of it, but refused to repair it - Said I would speak about it - if he took the wood, he ought to make the fence -
Came up to my book again and altogether read (very carefully) from page 72 to 108 tome iv. vie du Chevalier de Faublas - Breakfast at 10 26/60 - Came upstairs at 11 1/2 - wrote all the above of today - making out the milk account - settled it with Benjamin Bottomley - making out an account for my father meaning to pay him as the probable future treasurer of the Boothtown charity, the balance of ÂŁ4.7.3 due to it from my uncle -
Some time downstairs talking to my aunt - she is making another will for the purpose of making some little alterations in the lagacies reducing them from two hundred to one to save me expense when anything happens to her she is all consideration for me -
Read over the letter M- [Mariana] would not let me send to her mother written 6 January last - From 2 35/60 to 4 writing out the copy of this letter to shew to Dr H.S. Belcombe till 5 writing out (also for Dr H.S. Belcombe) the message sent throâ Mrs Milne - and looking for and writing out the answer received throâ M- on the 31st ultimate -
My father came - paid him for the last 5 weeksâ milk - offered to pay off Joseph Smith for him on Wednesday - surprised to find he meant to keep him for an indefinite time to do this and that - made no observation - at 5 25/60 went out with my father - walked with him to the top of the bank - he means to make some alteration there - to take in a good deal of the old road - stood talking - got home at 6 5/60 -
Dressed - dinner at 6 20/60 at which hour Mr Freeman came - waited 1/2 hour till I had dined - gave me a check on Rawsonsâ bank for £300 - asked him to make up the sum of £2000 before the 10th of July - will if he can - took my acknowledgement of having received £300 as per check - promised to give him a bond for the £2000 when I had got the whole - will pay up whatever odd interest may be due before the 10 July next, and all interest to be due on that day and the 10th of January in future - shall probably agree about getting the stone in Yew Trees wood - He is to let me have next Monday some heads of an agreement to be drawn up between us, and as soon as this matter is arranged he is to begin bearing - will probably give from 3/6 to 4/. per yard - may perhaps get 300 or 400 yards for the 1st 3 or 4 years - Mr Samuel Washington to measure for us - Asked him to recommend someone to value between us at the outset - he mentioned Mr Clayton of Southowram - a master quarrier very honest, fair-dealing, unbiassed man - had worked under them (the Freemans) till he had saved money enough to set up for himself - Mr Freeman has a quarry under Mr Walker Priestley in Southowram - give him 5/. per yard - why not appoint Briggs steward Mr Freeman has nothing against him but had some trouble about his sisters concerns whom Briggs married and he knows Briggs does not like him in his heart might be saying little things against him that he gave me too little etc etc and might thus give him some trouble - Brought Mr Freeman into the dining room to drink his wine with us and staid till after 8 - took three glasses of port besides a glass we did not appreciate of the old port turned white with age half a century in bottle said Briggs would tell him any point of law etc etc very kindly but he was afraid he was poor when he ought to have been saving he spent it all in fancies gigs horses etc -
Tea and coffee at 8 1/2 - my aunt and [I] talked over the choice between Mr Parker and Mr Briggs for a steward - inclined to the former - the latter being poor sticks in my throat poverty makes people not always the safest - Talked over our affairs and the propriety of being away from here out of my fatherâs reach for borrowing money from us etc my aunt has rewritten out her will today to be signed perhaps on Saturday by M- and Watson -
Fine morning till between 10 and 11, then threatening rain and from about 11 for the rest of the day showery - some heavy thunder showers - Barometer 1/2 degree above changeable Fahrenheit 47Ë at 10 10/60 p.m. at which hour came up to bed - wrote the last 27 lines which took me till after 11 - E..O.. -

for all yâall who are at uni/college or going to start uni/college at some point in the next year, my main pieces of advice to have a more enjoyable time than i did in undergrad are in this post. read away friends.
(poa 1) EVENTS: go to all of the campus events that you can (not just career ones) and spend money on some campus food instead of skipping both of these things on purpose as a strict way to save money. bc i did this in my second year of undergrad and it leaves you feeling super fucking lonely and shit. i didnât eat nice food bc it was âtoo expensiveâ. i avoided events in case the whole event or part of the event cost money. really not fun. basically i avoided all socialisation by holing up in the library in the quiet study floor until my next class. itâs really alienating and worse than being lonely.
(poa 2) SOCIAL PLACES AND MAKING FRIENDS OUTSIDE OF CLASS: even if youâre alone, go to the campus bar at least once a sem to have one drink (unless youâre driving of course) and see if you make friends at the bar. bc i went to the bar a grand total of twice while i was in undergrad bc i didnât trust myself to drink safely bc i was always alone on my days at uni. trust yourself more, i guess, is the message here. mainly i avoided the bar too bc i got so drunk at a philosophy wine & cheese night in first year, that a norwegian dude in his late 20s at the time had to escort me out so that i didnât embarrass myself any further and also so that i didnât do anything dangerous. like i was like 18/19, but iâd drunk an equivalent of a bottle of wine (like 8 glasses i suppose) in like an hour bc i didnât know when to stop drinking and when to start eating while i was drunk. so i just got really fucking wasted by accident mostly. everyone at the that w&c night had to constantly ask me if i was driving home or not bc i was that drunk. it was BAD lmao. the main life hack here is to learn your alcohol limit and learn how to drink responsibly EARLY so that a whole party of people donât have to follow you around and donât have to baby you the whole time that youâre drinking lmao. on the whole, stay safe with alcohol kids.
avoiding the bar bc of the story above etc made uni so much fucking worse. bc by avoiding all the social events and social places to meet people by camping out in the library with my food from home and avoiding anything that cost money on campus (besides a coffee/coffee milk drink thing that i liked buying. and also transport costs for a while)... i didnât make ANY longlasting friends. like i left undergrad uni with literally zilch friends when everyone else still has a group of friends that they talk to now that theyâve graduated.
(poa 3) TALKING TO PEOPLE IN CLASS: donât be afraid to talk to people in your classes. bc i avoided talking to people until they talked to me; but it always ended up that no one would talk to me anyway. (bar maybe my friends who ended up in the same classes as me by chance or one to two people who were in all of my/most of my classes throughout uni)... so it was really fucking lonely. also i didnât bother dating either so maybe that was a mistake hahahaha đ.
finally, you know who some of the nicest people actually are???? mature aged students. donât discount/ignore them bc they have a tendency to ask annoyingly detailed questions or keep the class for longer sometimes or debate the lecturer/tutor. i made more friends with mature aged students in their like late 20s/early 30s to maybe early 50s or whatever; than i ever did with the prententious dudes in my actual fucking age bracket (18-24).
bc for some reason the guys in my age bracket irritated me the most and i always felt that they didnât really want to talk to me anyway, and i didnât want to talk to them either anyway hahaha. but the mature aged students didnât get on my nerves as much i suppose, bc they had more important things to worry about than splendour in the grassâs lineup or other music festival lineups and/or their contiki holidays that i couldnât afford to even think about going to or on. idk it was weird. but maybe thatâs just because men in arts degrees who are in my age bracket are the fucking worst lmao. but anyway.
so yeah these are my pieces of advice for uni yâall. have fun.
#life#about me#shut up ilona#uni#uni life#ilona whines about shitty life to her followes lol#ilona tries to give advice#splendour in the grass is essentially australias coachella i think#for people wondering what it is#its super overrated tbh

2

3
Polaroid Pop Instant 3Ă4 Photo Printer & Digital Camera
Being able to hold photos of special moments hits different. Polaroidâs wireless Pop Instant camera is a game-changer for making it possible to take, preview, edit and print 3.5 x 4.25 photos. Arplis - News: When I first saw this Easter sweet from MĂĄlaga called nazareno, which literally translates as nazarean, my first thought was: hot cross buns! Their look is very similar, so I wonder if they are influenced by each other (maybe a traveler that brought...
A few differences are that, in the nazareno, the raisins are soaked in MĂĄlagaâs sweet wine, and it also incorporates candied fruit and walnuts. As for the cross âcharacteristic on both of themâ, the recipes vary: some use flour and water while some are icing sugar based. However, my very favorite is the cream cheese frosting. So the recipe Iâm bringing you today is the MĂĄlagaâs nazareno with the less-malagueña cream cheese cross. In my opinion, the best of both worlds! Nazareno hot cross bun. The word nazareno alludes to the men that carry the religious images that process through the townsâ streets in Spain during Holy Week. They wear a peculiar outfit composed of a habit, a cape and a capirote, a cone shaped hat with a veil that covers their head and face. These outfits have their origin in the middle ages and symbolize the personâs repentance from his or her faults. Traditions run deep in Spain and Holy Week processions are one of the most popular of these traditions. It is almost surreal to watch the empty Spanish streets this year, with people confined to their homes due to the Covid 19 pandemic. But the sentiments run deep, and people are observing the holy season from their balconies âmusicians playing their instruments or singing saetas, the sorrowful songs sung during the processions. For more on the traditions of Holy Week and Easter in Spain you can check the Idiosyncrasies section of this blog, or by clicking here. Thereâs nothing traditional about the Holy Week of 2020, and the less-than-festive prospects of Easter Sunday. It will be forever remembered as the most strange one in our lifetime. This week in Spain, where Holy Week processions are the norm in most every town and city, a new saying has been coined: âla procesiĂłn va por dentroâ, the procession is inside us. Holy Week is still happening, Easter Sunday and the celebration of Christâs resurrection will still happen. But it will be a much more inward experience this year. We will not have large family gatherings; we will probably not dress up for a religious service (or yes?) But we can still make it special âby cooking a special meal, a delicious dessert, attending the church service through live streaming. You can dress up, too! And if you head straight to the recipe for nazarenos, you can even have a very special breakfast as well. The photos that accompany this post are from Springbreak and Easter last year, when we traveled to Miami and, like itâs our tradition, spent Easter Sunday with our friends. One day, sooner or later if we stay home and beat the pandemic, weâll travel, and will celebrate with friends again. HAPPY EASTER! NAZARENOS, MALAGAâS HOT CROSS BUNS Ingredients: 3 1/2 cups flour 1 cup milk 4 Tbs unsalted butter 1/4 tsp nutmeg 1 tsp cinnamon 1 tsp salt 1/3 cup sugar 2 1/4 tsp dry yeast (1 individual packet) 2 eggs 1/2 cup dark raisins 1/2 cup yellow raisins 1/3 cup sherry (or other sweet wine, MĂĄlagaâs if available)  2 Tbs candied fruit (I used dried apricots) 1/3 cup chopped walnuts 2 tsp olive oil (for greasing the bowl)          For the glaze: 1 Tbs honey 1 Tbs water          For the icing: 1 cup icing sugar 4 Tbs cream cheese 1 Tsp vanilla extract 1 Tbs unsalted butter, at room temperature 1/2 Tbs water (if necessary)  Place the sherry and raisins in a small bowl to soak. In a small saucepan warm up the milk with the butter until the butter melts. Sprinkle the nutmeg and stir to mix. Remove from the stove and set aside. In a larger bowl sift the flour. Add the cinnamon, salt and sugar and mix with a wisk. Add the yeast and mix. Add the eggs and the milk mixture and stir to mix with the dry ingredients. Continue working the dough on a floured surface, rolling into itself and pushing back, until fairly elastic, about 10 minutes. Form a large ball. Grease a large bowl with olive oil and place the ball of dough in it. Cover with a damp cloth and set in a warm, dry place to rise for a minimum of 1 hour. The dough will double in size. Drain the raisins. Remove the dough from the bowl and place it on a clean surface. Punch it down and spread the raisins, candied fruit and walnuts evenly over the top. Roll the dough onto itself and then into a ball so the fruit and nuts are evenly spread. Roll the dough into a log and cut it in half. Roll each half into a log again. Split in half, then each half into thirds, then each piece in half. You will end up with 24 pieces of about 50 gr each. Roll each piece into a small ball. Preheat the oven to 375ÂșF. Line a large oven tray with parchment paper and place the small balls of dough on it evenly spaced. Cover with a clean, damp cloth and place in warm, dry place to rise, about 30 minutes. The balls will double in size. Remove the cloth, place the tray in the oven and bake for about 10 minutes or until golden (mine were ready at the 8 minute mark, so check closely during the last minutes of baking).  Prepare the glaze: mix the honey with the milk until well combined. Prepare the icing: in a small bowl, mix the icing sugar, cream cheese, vanilla extract and melted butter. Add the water if necessary. Scoop the icing into a pastry bag and place in the fridge to chill. Remove the buns from the oven and brush with the glaze. Let cool completely before piping the icing in the shape of a cross (use a steady hand to pipe horizontally, then transversally, over each row of buns). You can eat the nazarenos as is or sliced and buttered.    Notes: To create the warm environment for the dough to rise I turned the oven on low temperature for a few minutes, then turned it off and placed the bowl inside, with the door half open   You can make the dough in a stand up mixer with the hook attachment The nazarenos are better when consumed the same day. If you have leftovers they are excellent warmed up for 8-10 seconds in the microwave You can freeze the nazareans in a platic container    The post The nazareno, âhot cross bunâ from MĂĄlaga â Easter at home appeared first on MAMA ĂA. #Breakfast #Bread #DessertsAndSweets #Merienda #SemanaSantaYPascua

Great Wines of Italy 2018 Bangkok
Another December, another round of wine scrum. There I was, again, negotiating a capacity crowd of stemware-wielding, purplish teeth-baring oenophiles for my vinous spoils.
To be exact, a staggering 191 premium wines from 98 producers. James Sucklingâs Great Wines of Italy 2018 Asia tour was back and bigger than ever.
The bustle of Bangkok was nothing compared with frantic scenes in Hong Kong or Beijing, observed visiting winemakers. That said, no sooner had the door opened things got into full swing.
More wines, less time
Something tells us perhaps the shortened programme â there goes our one-hour head start before people clock out from work â has something to do with cost management. Omission of some big-name labels suggests as much. Then again, it remained a small price to pay for the admission price we paid, in a country where wine spells luxury.
But I digressed. Naturally, the early birds flocked to wherever 100-pointer juice flowed, drained and vanished in record time, leaving a trail of empty Ornellaias or Tignanellos exhibited posthumously to disgruntled latecomers.
However, the sheer number of exciting picks meant there was no time for regret. Something else would come along.
Suffice to say, I was extremely content to have followed the heart rather than the points. Though I barely scratched the surface, my experience was all the more rewarding for when winemakers reciprocated aficionadosâ enthusiasm with full attention and spirited exchanges in between pours.
Hereâs my far-from-exhaustive fabulous dozen from the walk-around tasting:
Riecine â14 Toscana Rosso Riecine Visibly limpid, hauntingly weightless. Beautiful mesh of red fruit, violet, white pepper and blood orange, laced with racy acidity and minerality. Smart, trim, nothing in excess. Picture a whispery tĂȘte-Ă -tĂȘte with Rooney Mara. Incredibly cerebral, soulful sangiovese in purezza. Some whole bunch, extended skin maceration, Ă©levage in concrete.
Riecine â15 Toscana Rosso La Gioia More quintessential Chianti Classico: richer, fuller by comparison. Expressive sour cherry and red fruit emerges front and centre, as sweet spice, sandalwood and leather chime in harmoniously. Judicious oak and supple tannins add substance to style with plenty of verve. A classy 100% sangiovese which lives up to its name: true joy in a glass.
The reason these translucent beauties shun the Gran Selezione pedestal, according to the engaging winemaker Alessandro Campatelli, is colour-obsessed red tape no less. To think that the Consorzio wouldâve learned a thing or two from past blunders...
Pieropan â15 Soave Classico Calvarino Heady aromas of pear, apple, grapefruit and spring flowers wow the senses with real piquancy and thrust. Dripping with pristine orchard fruit, chalky minerals and brisk acidity on the sapid palate. Leesy and complex, it closes long with a peculiarly saline, nutty twang. Decidedly scintillating. 70% garganega and 30% trebbiano di soave on volcanic soil, aged sur lie in concrete vats.
Pieropan â15 Soave Classico La Rocca Harvested late and oaked, this radiant white bears richer concentration and definition, with a tropical (papaya!) twist. Honeyed and minerally, bright acidity lifts the tactile palate as it powers to a flavoursome finish. A peach of a wine, this offers fascinating contrast side by side with Calvarino yet thereâs very little to separate them. 100% garganega on chalky clay, aged sur lie in large old casks.
Pietradolce â14 Etna Rosso Vigna Barbagalli Lady Etna is enigmatic: floral, briary, smoky, with tar and menthol in the bouquet. Concentrated wild berry and slick oak inform the smoldering, youthfully austere palate. Distinctively earthy with puâer-like finish. Mind the silken yet potent tannins. Has the stuffing, both gravitas and grace not unlike nebbiolo. From century-old, pre-phylloxera vines at contrada Rampante.
Alta Mora â14 Etna Rosso Guardiola Likewise earthy disposition to this fragrant single contrada. Mineral vein underscores dark fruit, wet clay, tar, florals, pomegranate and Mediterranean herb, all framed by dense noble tannins. Tightly-knit and sleek rather than sinewy, with excellent complexity, line and length. More animated and savoury than Barbagalli. Nebbiolo again pops into mind yet with a personality all its own. A winner from 150-year old vines.
Nittardi â15 Chianti Classico Casanuova di Nittardi Pure sangiovese from acidity-retaining altitudes at Castellina. Just old tonneaux and some time in concrete. Bright cherry is joined by violet, dark berries and a whiff of good olâ barnyard. Sappy palate grips and extends with a dusty, spicy kick. Riveting. One-time owner, Renaissance rockstar Michelangelo Buonarroti â hence the artsy label tribute â makes for an excellent conversation piece.
Proprietor LĂ©on Femfert revealed that Rhys, one half of the mischievous Matthews on The Wine Show â and an Emmy-winning actor â downed a glass filled to the brim, presumably in desperate need of inspiration for his label doodling showdown with co-host Goode. Guess what, it did the trick.
Castello di Volpaia â15 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Coltassala Red fruit, incense, florals and vanilla leap out of the glass. The extravagant perfume a result of sandy soil at Radda altitudes and 24-month worth of new French oak. Deep sweet cherry luxuriates in milk chocolate in the mouth, rendered a voluptuous spin by said wood. Fresh acidity and firm ripe tannins provide impeccable balance. Freshly-minted Gran Selezione, kind of self-explanatory if you find it a touch modern.
San Polino â13 Brunello di Montalcino Helichrysum Spellbinding aromatics. Ample acidity and a wall of mouth-coating tannins shape the chiseled architecture which frames black cherry, raspberry, blue flowers, new leather, tobacco and baking spice. Brooding and tight, there is no doubting the latent potential i.e. depth, intensity and vigour. Long ferment, large Slavonian cask aging equal classic brunello par excellence.
It was the Fanti rep Luca Vitiello who pointed me in San Polino direction when I requested his recommendation. Nice lad. Speaking of which, his lithe, fresh-fruited Fanti â13 Brunello di Montalcino is disarmingly charming, delivering succulent berries and watermelon with lip-smacking immediacy, not that it wonât benefit from some bottle age.
Argentiera â15 Bolgheri Superiore Ornellaia next-table might have stolen the limelight, but this snazzy overachiever stole the show. Blueberry, blackcurrant, cedar, wood spice and graphite meld seamlesssly with super polished tannins and opulent oak to compose a symphony of decadence. Apparently well-endowed yet supple in its caress. The proverbial iron fist in a velvet glove.
Jermann â16 Vintage Tunina Venezia Giulia An intriguing blend of chardonnay, sauvignon with autochthonous ribolla gialla, malvasia istriana and picolit. Intense nose and full-bodied palate are handsomely laden with gooseberry, apricot, white blossom and lemon drop in citrusy overtone. Steely acidity balances juicy weight with aplomb, as pithy aftertaste lingers on. Not for nothing does it consistently rank as one of Italyâs top whites.
A winemakersâ vintage
To say barolo is conspicuous by its absence would be an understatement. With 2014sâ bad rap weighing on my mind, this wettest of vintages in recent memory seemed to have put a damper on baroloâs hot streak at first taste. A weaker field and palate fatigue arguably didnât help.
But hindsight is a beautiful thing, in all probability, so could be some of these ugly ducklings. What this winemakersâ vintage might lack in flesh and bones, it more than makes up for in finesse and sultry appeal, eager to please with minimal cellaring. 2014 might turn out to be nothing more than just a speed bump.
Between the inebriation and camaraderie, the wine-drenched evening was a lot to take in. Evidently, Bangkok embraced vino italiano with gusto â some had one too many, those jovial strangers who egged me on to give the irrepressible Frescobaldi ambassador, Erika Ribaldi a peck on the cheek, to which I respectfully obliged.
Good-natured fun apart, the tasting is always about finding that something which tickles your fancy. Iâm constantly told, and often repeat, that to get to the bottom of Italian wines, non basta una vita. â KY

The post first published at https://familydestinationsguide.com/best-family-hotels-new-york-city/

From world-class museums and expansive parks to global cuisine that will leave you wanting more, there is never going to be a time when you run out of things to do.
When you are traveling with kids, a city like NYC is best enjoyed when you set up a base at a centrally located property that is designed to host families.
Here, I have compiled a list of the best family hotels in New York for you to choose from!

In addition to fun perks like child-sized robes and slippers, coloring books and DVDs, the hotel can also provide a wide range of baby-proofing material, bottle warmers, strollers, baby monitors and so on.
If your kids are older, they may enjoy the different tours that the property puts together especially for children.

Long Time, Big Province
Itâs been awhile. Weâve been in Canada for 24 days. It seems like itâs been ages and not at the same time.
We rolled into Banff in a rented car, big olâ 2017 Toyota Camry (free full-size upgrade from the tiny, cheap car we paid for). This was cheaper than two people taking any of the shuttles to Banff. Insane, right? This way we got to stop wherever we wanted to as well, which was nice.
There we had our first Tim Hortonâs experience. It was underwhelming, but cheap and reasonably tasty. I got something called a B.E.L.T. which is a BLT but on a bagel and has one of those egg âpattiesâ in it too. The bagel was a pretzel bagel which made it all worth it. Since then, weâve been to Tim Hortonâs quite a few times and the noveltyâs worn off.
We stayed at the International Hostel in Banff, which is expensive as hell for a hostel, and therefore shared a bed, which was comfier anyway. We were able to ditch our packs in their storage area and go out for some drinks, which we did, and âhelpedâ (more like carried) some 19 year old kids who had gotten absolutely smashed get home to their campsite. Dumb kids. This was our first run in with dumb kids.
We headed out the next day to the trailhead at Lake Minnewanka. Well, thatâs where we thought the trailhead was, and once there we asked just about everyone and no one knew where the ACTUAL trailhead was. We ran into some French guys doing the same route as us and we ended up hiking a few km back down the road looking for the trailhead which didnât exist where they thought it was (to be fair, it was hidden) and we reached Upper Bankhead eventually (where the real trailhead was). We finally got on the trail at around 6pm and not feeling fresh whatsoever. We spent awhile getting to the campsite (all uphill on a gravelly road that was somewhat annoying to hike on) and spent time getting used to our packs. Once we were at the campsite we had a quick dinner and found a spot to pitch our tent (a secluded site on a bed of moss, which was heavenly for sleeping). We pitched it in the dark and slept pretty heavily.
The next day was the trek up to Cr15 (the campsites are named by landmarks and how many km they are from their respective trailheads). It was an easy enough hike and we spotted a few lines of packhorses/donkeys with their handlers going somewhere north of the campsite. We passed by a wardenâs cabin and came to an unmarked three-fork and sat down to try to figure out where the campsite was; we realized then weâd left one of our two-way radios somewhere on the trail so Martin went back to attempt to find it (he didnât). This was the second item we were relieved of prematurely (the first one being Martinâs hat, which he left in the ladyâs car who had given us a ride to Lake Minnewanka. That was our first hitchhike, by the way). We crossed a tiny little bridge across a river after a French guy pointed us in the direction of the campsite and we set up camp. It was pretty wide-open which was great, since we got enough wind at the food/eating area to keep the mosquitoes at bay.
A short tangent here: the backcountry campsites are mostly laid out in a similar fashion. Thereâs a picnic table (of sorts), a fire pit with a grill, bear hangers for food/packs made from metal braided rope, and then the campsites are 50m-100m away from the food/eating areas. They also have pit toilets.
We stayed at Cr15 a couple nights and did a bit of laundry and reading in the sun, then headed to the last stop in our loop, a site called Ek13.
The hike from Cr15 to Ek13 was torturous. There was a significant elevation gain and the trail ran between/on top of the foothills of the Vermillion Range. The trail was pretty rough in places due to horse traffic (horses can really mess up soft trails). I almost lost a boot to a really deep spot of mud.
It started out so well though.
We had a nice saunter through dry riverbeds and followed the âtrail is this wayâ hiker signs until the trail spat us out on a riverbank. But where was the bridge? After maybe an hour of looking upriver, downriver, and aroundriver, we asked someone at a horse stable a bit downriver of the trail how to get across -- ends up we just had to CROSS THE RIVER.
The river was waist deep, fast, and very cold. Martin helped me across and went back for our packs. We dried off and set out on our way. It was a long and arduous hike, but we got there. We pitched our tent in a nice spot not too out of the way and tried not to get murdered by mosquitoes during dinner. Some guys came in near midnight (we were still awake) and set up camp.
We made acquaintances with the guys who came in late -- they were two Canadians who were old friends and camping buddies. They had apparently brought an entire supermarketâs worth of food. Martin and I just looked on in disbelief as they pulled out fresh milk, fresh sausages, and even a 6 pack of fresh eggs. We had a giant breakfast with them as they were kind enough to offer to share everything. Martin was happy to have real milk in his tea (instead of the powdered stuff weâd been using). They left us some delicious yogurt-nut bars and some amazing dill soft cheese called Boursin (cheese! I was all over that). We planned to stay a couple nights... and then things went wrong.
Martin had gathered some dandelion greens to make a fresh sauteed side for some of the summer sausage weâd brought along. He was pouring the boiled off fat from the summer sausage into the greens when the fat/oil spat... badly... all over my right hand.
Cue screaming and 2nd degree burns.
An hour later after Iâd held my hand in the glacial stream nearby we did our best to bandage it up and assess the damage. It blistered pretty good. There was fluid in all of them and it hurt like hell. I couldnât really use it to do anything so we just sat around in our tent for a few days.
It helped that we were way up in the mountains and somehow were getting cellphone internet.
Our batteries were running out and my hand was healing, so we decided to head back into Banff after a short day-hike to Elk Lake. The Canadians were back from their unorthodox river camp (they didnât bother crossing), and poured us some wine from a bag theyâd brought (?!) and shared some slightly less legal substances as well. They were horrified at the state of my hand (it did look pretty bad, to be fair). Elk Lake was beautiful and teeming with fish, the sunset over the mountains was incredible, Martin tried to climb a slope but realized mountains are actually really fucking high, we saw some snow, and I managed to burst all my blisters (nooooo!).
The biggest fear about my hand was risk of infection but we did a good job at keeping it clean. After the hike to the trailhead, which was long (and I was flagging badly near the end), we collapsed onto the shuttle back into Banff to stay another couple nights at the hostel. We had a good time in the city but fuck, itâs way too expensive.
We decided to hitch out north toward Jasper, originally intending to stay at the hostel but it was full. In fact, everything in Jasper appeared to be full besides the overflow campground a few miles north of town. We amended our plan, and Iâm so glad we did.
We took a free shuttle up to Lake Louise, saw Lake Louise, saw all the tourists, saw a mother moose with her two baby (still huge) meese, and went back to the village site. We got advice on where to thumb from the Parks people and some firefighters and got water from an auto repair shop near the highway. A lone girl from British Columbia going to Saskatchewan Crossing for some film work gave us a lift maybe 15 minutes later. She dropped us off at the trailhead for Hector Lake, which was only a few km off the Icefields Parkway.
The campsite was full up but we got a tip off there was a really nice spot down on the point of the lake, to the left. And there was. We walked in, happy to find a place to sleep, and in awe of how fucking beautiful the lake was. It blew Lake Louise completely away in terms of beauty (and also there were barely any people). The barrier to entry was crossing another small river, but this time only knee-high and not as cold. I discovered some communal river-crossing shoes and did better at crossing this time.
We stayed there until the food ran out because it was such a nice spot. We laid by the lake, did a lot of reading, and canoeing in the free campground canoes. The last night before we were intending to leave, we heard some people yelling while we were about to settle into our tent. Ends up some kids had gone out in the canoes and gotten blown into the opposite shore (the wind picks up awfully quick out there and itâs a big lake). Awhile later we found them after lending a hand (and some lights) to the frightened teenagers. They were wet and cold and the girls were grateful but I donât think the guys even said âthank youâ for our rummaging through the brush for over 30 minutes to find them.
Some other group of guys originally offered them a place to stay that night but I guess they wanted to get the kids out of their hair so told them theyâd lend headlamps and walk them to the river, so they ended up leaving late, around midnight, and that was that.
We hitchhiked from Hector Lake to Jasper courtesy of a nice German girl in a big truck. Item #3 went missing in her truck, a can of bear spray (1 of 2) which mustâve rolled under the seat during the drive. She dropped us off slightly out of town and we made the walk in.
Pictures and tales of Jasper to come in a later post.

Unpinned -Â Aged T-Bone Roast with Green Peppercorn Sauce and Yorkshire Puddings
Wow, thatâs a heck of a long title for a blog post. Welcome back, dear reader! As you can see, weâre sticking to our FANCY food trend right now and cooking up some OLD MEAT! âWhat the heck is old meat?â you may ask. According to Wikipedia, dry aging is a process where meat is hung or placed on a rack to dry for several weeks. It results in meat that is more flavorful and tender due to science and magic. And at first I scoffed and thought that Iâd prefer my food NOT left in a cupboard for a few weeks, thank you very much. But now that Iâve tried 45+ day aged T-bone? Ruined. Iâm ruined for boring normal meat for life.
And so I present to you:Â Aged T-Bone Roast with Green Peppercorn Sauce and Yorkshire Puddings
Verdict: Is the Pintrest photo complete bullshit? - Not really! Thatâs pretty much what it looks like, although we donât use polished wooden platters to eat off of.
Is it crazy expensive/time consuming/confusing? - Yes. Because weâre on a fancy kick. That shit is like $50 A POUND.Â
Does it taste good? - YES. It tastes like itâs WORTH $50 a pound.
Aged T-Bone Roast with Green Peppercorn Sauce and Yorkshire Puddings
INGREDIENTS
1 kg aged T-bone steak
1 T olive oil
Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
For the Yorkshire puddings
2 free-range eggs
125 ml milk
60 g flour
œ t salt
65 ml oil
For the green peppercorn sauce
375 ml beef stock
1 T olive oil
2 shallots, finely chopped
250 ml cream
2 T brandy (or 1 t brandy extract, which is alcohol free)
2 T slightly crushed green peppercorns
COOKING INSTRUCTIONS
Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Make the batter for the Yorkshire puddings 1 hour in advance.
Beat the eggs with the milk, add the flour and salt, and mix until smooth. Transfer to a jug and set aside.
Heat a frying pan, rub the meat with the olive oil and season. Brown the steak on both sides.
Remove from the pan, reserving the juices in the pan. Place the steak on a roasting tray and roast for 20 minutes, or until done to your liking.
To make the green peppercorn sauce, place the beef stock into a clean saucepan and simmer until reduced by half, about 10 minutes.
In the pan containing the meat juices, heat the olive oil and fry the chopped shallots until soft. Add the reduced stock, cream, brandy and peppercorns. Simmer until thick, about 15 minutes.
Remove the steak from the oven, cover with foil and allow to rest in a warm place for 15 minutes.
Increase the ovenâs temperature to 220°C.
Place 2 t oil into each mould of a muffin tray. Place into the oven to heat up. Once the oil is hot, pour in enough batter to half fill each mould and return to the oven immediately. Bake for 15 to 20 minutes until golden and risen.
Serve immediately with the T-bone and green peppercorn sauce.
Here it is, all its dry-aged beauty. The first thing you may have noticed about this recipe is that the cooking temperatures and certain word spellings seem a little...foreign? Backwards? UNAMERICAN? Only my dear cooking partner James would be crazy enough to find us a UK recipe that required constant googling of â180 degrees Celsius to Fahrenheitâ (also god bless spell check because units of temperature measurement are hella hard to spell).Â
The next thing you may notice is that the recipe calls for brandy, which I have quite a lot of sitting on my bar. This did us absolutely no good when I failed to pack it and bring it with me to the Kent household. So rather than trek back out into the cold, we improvised and used âWhite Christmasâ rum and brandy spirit mix. Itâs a cheap and delicious way to booze up your hot cocoa and I highly recommend everyone grab a bottle the next time they spot one - excellent bang for your buck, and surprisingly delicious in a cream shallot sauce!
Thankfully a few years now of writing this blog has taught me a couple of things (remember the pie fiasco that required a whole bunch of dough refrigeration at 11pm?). I now actually READ the recipe before we begin, and so we knew to make the Yorkshire pudding mix first, so that it could chill while we worked on the steak. I wouldâve left it for the 24 minutes it took us to finish the steak. James insisted we wait the full hour. Damn it.
MMM. Searing stage. Not nearly as quick as the skirt steak from our last attempt, but still surprisingly fast. I had fewer concerns about poisoning ourselves since this beauty just sears for flavor but bakes in the oven for actual, yâknow, cooking.
My mouth is watering while writing this blog post. Canât you just SMELL this picture?! It was amazing.
Then it was time to chop the shallots, wherein (as is custom) my eyes turned into pits of fiery red splintered glass shards. And there was much rejoicing. Rews and raw onions just donât mix.
Hereâs our reduced beef broth, getting the olâ shallot and cream treatment. I donât know what brilliant human realized that cream + broth = magic, but I love them for it.
Getting saucy! I probably spent 15+ minutes staring at the wall of spices in my local grocery store trying to find green peppercorns. Were they squishy? Dry? Did I need to pick them out of the tri-color peppercorn grinders? Were they strange British slang for something else, like capers? I did eventually find them, and behold - our green peppercorn sauce was born.
The steak while it was ârestingâ. Yup, thatâs actually a thing we did. I figure if youâre gonna drop $50+ dollars a pound on some meat, you may as well do everything you can do to make it taste perfect.
Yorkshire pudding time! I canât be the only one who had no clue that Yorkshire pudding does not actually refer to pudding. Itâs a popover. Yes, I know - I was as shocked as you are. We heated the oil in the tin then poured our batter mix in. There was some serious bubbling and splatter, but we survived.
Little poufy pudding puffs, ready to bake!
LOOK AT THEM GO!
James modeling his Yorkshire puddings. Arenât they cute and slightly grotesque looking? Like bread mushrooms. Or golden squishy rocks. They were delicious.
(I suppose they just look like popovers, really)
The table set for four, with some tasty peas on the side and epic red wine courtesy of Daveâs Fresh Pasta, where our hosts are part of their wine of the month club. The fancy meat is thanks to the brilliant folks over at M.F. Dulock, who offer an amazing meat share program.
My plate in its final form. I LOVE the bones.
Final final verdict: This was a fairly time-consuming recipe that wasnât too difficult - things just needed time to rest and chill. Worthwhile, as it was INCREDIBLY delicious. If youâre ever looking to cook for a super special occasion or find a crazy deal on dry aged beef, go for it. Just be forewarned that it will ruin your appreciation for regular meat forever.Â

Watch out for these 7 Halloween safety pitfalls
In the spirit of Halloween safety, here are seven ways to reduce the risk of poisoning and allergic reactions while trick-or-treating.
Bruce Ruck, managing director of the New Jersey Poison Control Center at Rutgers New Jersey Medical Schoolâs emergency medicine department, offers the following safety advice to the 41.1 million children whoâll head out on Halloween night:
Check the wrapper. Before allowing children to eat candy, inspect it for tampering. Signs of tampering may include opened wrappers, wrapping that doesnât match the candy inside, labels with misspelled words, or candy that looks or smells strange.
Watch for marijuana edibles. Be aware of how similar these products can look like store-bought candyâwith similar names and packaging, but whose spellings or wrapper color might be slightly different. Ecstasy pills or other drugs can also look like colorful candy. These products may contain high concentrations of drugs, causing the potential for severe effects in adults or children.
Be alert to food allergies. One in 13 children under the age of 18 in the United States is allergic to foods such as peanuts, wheat, milk, tree nuts, or eggs. Many children can have severe reactions. If your child is allergic, monitor the candy and other treats they take.
Use caution with face paint and makeup. Face products may cause skin irritation. Parents should purchase items from reputable sources with a recognizable or name brand or check the ingredients for known allergens. Apply the product to a small area first. Some cosmetics and paints, especially those that are imported or found at bargain stores, have been found to contain lead. Anyone who uses face paint should wash their hands with soap and water before eating.
Skip the non-prescription costume contact lenses. These products could contain chlorine, iron, or other dangerous chemicals and are not approved by the Food and Drug Administration, according to the American Academy of Ophthalmology. Only buy decorative contact lenses from retailers that require a prescription and sell FDA-approved products.
Be careful with alcohol. Many at-home Halloween parties serve alcohol. Itâs important to realize the alcohol content in beer, wine, liquor, and cocktails/punches affects children and pets differently than it does adults; even ingesting a small amount could lead to serious health complications or death. A person who seems very drunk or has passed out may be showing early signs of alcohol poisoning and be in real danger. Immediate medical help is essential. âSleeping it offâ is never a safe option. Know the critical signs of alcohol poisoning.
Watch your pets: Chocolate, cocoa, candy, and other products containing xylitol, an artificial sweetener, are poisonous to pets and can cause vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, or even death.
If a child, adult, or pet has ingested a potentially dangerous product, you can call the New Jersey Poison Center at 800-222-1222 for immediate medical advice from doctors, nurses, and pharmacists who are on call 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

My mom posted some old people meme on facebook
It said:
Checking out at the store, the young cashier suggested to the much older lady that she should bring her own grocery bags, because plastic bags are not good for the environment,. The woman apologized to the young girl and explained, "We didn't have this 'green thing' back in my earlier days." The young clerk responded, "That's our problem today. Your generation did not care enough to save our environment for future generations." The older lady said that she was right our generation didn't have the "green thing" in its day. The older lady went on toexplain: Back then, we returned milk bottles, soda bottles and beer bottles to the store. The store sent them back to the plant to be washed and sterilized and refilled, so it could use the same bottles over and over. So they really were recycled. But we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Grocery stores bagged our groceries in brown paper bags that we reused for numerous things. Most memorable besides household garbage bags was the use of brown paper bags as book covers for our school books. This was to ensure that public property (the books provided for our use by the school) was not defaced by our scribblings. Then we were able to personalize our books on the brown paper bags. But, too bad we didn't do the "green thing" back then. We walked up stairs because we didn't have an escalator in every store and office building. We walked to the grocery store and didn't climb into a 300-horsepower machine every time we had to go two blocks. But she was right. We didn't have the "green thing" in our day. Back then we washed the baby's diapers because we didn't have the throw away kind. We dried clothes on a line, not in an energy-gobbling machine burning up 220 volts. Wind and solar power really did dry our clothes back in our early days. Kids got hand-me-down clothes from their brothers or sisters, not always brand-new clothing. But that young lady is right; we didn't have the "green thing" back in our day. Back then we had one TV, or radio, in the house -- not a TV in every room. And the TV had a small screen the size of a handkerchief (remember them?), not a screen the size of the state of Montana. In the kitchen we blended and stirred by hand because we didn't have electric machines to do everything for us. When we packaged a fragile item to send in the mail, we used wadded up old newspapers to cushion it, not Styrofoam or plastic bubble wrap. Back then, we didn't fire up an engine and burn gasoline just to cut the lawn. We used a push mower that ran on human power. We exercised by working so we didn't need to go to a health club to run on treadmills that operate on electricity. But she's right; we didn't have the "green thing" back then. We drank from a fountain when we were thirsty instead of using a cup or a plastic bottle every time we had a drink of water. We refilled writing pens with ink instead of buying a new pen, and we replaced the razor blade in a razor instead of throwing away the whole razor just because the blade got dull. But we didn't have the "green thing" back then. Back then, people took the streetcar or a bus and kids rode their bikes to school or walked instead of turning their moms into a 24-hour taxi service in the family's $45,000 SUV or van, which cost what a whole house did before the "green thing." We had one electrical outlet in a room, not an entire bank of sockets to power a dozen appliances. And we didn't need a computerized gadget to receive a signal beamed from satellites 23,000 miles out in space in order to find the nearest burger joint. But isn't it sad the current generation laments how wasteful we old folks were just because we didn't have the "green thing" back then? Please forward this on to another selfish old person who needs a lesson in conservation from a smart ass young person. We don't like being old in the first place, so it doesn't take much to piss us off... Especially from a tattooed, multiple pierced smartass who can't make change without the cash register telling them how much.
And I replied:
Yeah but like as soon as you could throw all that way, you all also did that. I mean that didn't happen during the time of the younger generation....instead they were handed the amazon on fire and melting sea ice. Moreover, even though it was the boomers (well some of them) who started what we now call the environmental movement, they're also the ones who abandoned it in the 80s to suck up cocaine and even drink their copious wine out of boxes they threw away. So I'm not really sure this is a fair or accurate estimation. Also: mom you're tattooed and it doesn't stop you caring about the environment.

Arplis - News: The nazareno, âhot cross bunâ from MĂĄlaga â Easter at home
When I first saw this Easter sweet from MĂĄlaga called nazareno, which literally translates as nazarean, my first thought was: hot cross buns! Their look is very similar, so I wonder if they are influenced by each other (maybe a traveler that brought them from one place to the other?)
Traditions run deep in Spain and Holy Week processions are one of the most popular of these traditions.Â
This week in Spain, where Holy Week processions are the norm in most every town and city, a new saying has been coined: âla procesiĂłn va por dentroâ, the procession is inside us.Â
And if you head straight to the recipe for nazarenos, you can even have a very special breakfast as well.Â
The photos that accompany this post are from Springbreak and Easter last year, when we traveled to Miami and, like itâs our tradition, spent Easter Sunday with our friends. One day, sooner or later if we stay home and beat the pandemic, weâll travel, and will celebrate with friends again.Â
HAPPY EASTER!
NAZARENOS, MALAGAâS HOT CROSS BUNS
Ingredients:
3 1/2 cups flour
1 cup milk
4 Tbs unsalted butter
1/4 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp cinnamon
1 tsp salt
1/3 cup sugar
2 1/4 tsp dry yeast (1 individual packet)
2 eggs
1/2 cup dark raisins
1/2 cup yellow raisins
1/3 cup sherry (or other sweet wine, MĂĄlagaâs if available)Â Â
2 Tbs candied fruit (I used dried apricots)
1/3 cup chopped walnuts
2 tsp olive oil (for greasing the bowl)
         For the glaze:
1 Tbs honey
1 Tbs water
         For the icing:
1 cup icing sugar
4 Tbs cream cheese
1 Tsp vanilla extract
1 Tbs unsalted butter, at room temperature
1/2 Tbs water (if necessary)
Place the sherry and raisins in a small bowl to soak.
Add the eggs and the milk mixture and stir to mix with the dry ingredients.Â
Drain the raisins.Â
The balls will double in size.Â
Remove the cloth, place the tray in the oven and bake for about 10 minutes or until golden (mine were ready at the 8 minute mark, so check closely during the last minutes of baking). Â
Prepare the glaze: mix the honey with the milk until well combined.Â
Prepare the icing: in a small bowl, mix the icing sugar, cream cheese, vanilla extract and melted butter. Add the water if necessary. Scoop the icing into a pastry bag and place in the fridge to chill.Â
Remove the buns from the oven and brush with the glaze. Let cool completely before piping the icing in the shape of a cross (use a steady hand to pipe horizontally, then transversally, over each row of buns).Â
You can eat the nazarenos as is or sliced and buttered. Â Â Â
Notes:
To create the warm environment for the dough to rise I turned the oven on low temperature for a few minutes, then turned it off and placed the bowl inside, with the door half open  Â
You can make the dough in a stand up mixer with the hook attachment
The nazarenos are better when consumed the same day. If you have leftovers they are excellent warmed up for 8-10 seconds in the microwave
You can freeze the nazareans in a platic container  Â
