Brother Jack
Delta knew right away that he couldn’t afford to stick to the forest behind the house. Eleanor would always find him. She could just appear at his side. He didn’t dare look at her mind straight-on, but he could feel her fury radiating out of the house. It was directed at the others now. She wasn’t thinking about him.
He had to take a chance.
He didn’t run for the woods, but for the road. He kept to a deer path in the trees until he got to the road—he didn’t want to chance the girls seeing him go, only to alert Eleanor—then turned toward town and ran for it.
He could run like hell. The sun beat down on him. He hadn’t gotten very far when he hit another small group of Sisters. These were Tenenbaum’s youngest. They shouted altogether when they saw him, but he didn’t stop. He just plunged past them at a full sprint.
He’d been engineered to carry a suit that weighed a full ton. He’d been given ungodly endurance. Every breath utilized oxygen more efficiently than a normal human being; every ounce of food he ate, more energy. He was a freight train given flesh and he flew.
He could tell that Eleanor was too far to suss him out by about the sixth mile. He only slowed down by the tenth, and by that time, he’d hit town.
He immediately felt like he’d made a mistake. Cars kept stopping in the street to gawk at him. Pedestrians crossed the road when they saw him, sometimes at a jog. He looked in a window at himself and shuddered. He was filthy from working in the yard all day, and he was wearing his old shoes with the holes in the sides. He was so tall, and he didn’t look right. There was a way to look and he didn’t have it anymore.
A black-and-white car marked with a seal drifted to a stop across the street, then pulled a U-turn and rolled up beside him. Delta hunched his shoulders, kept his eyes forward.
“Hey,” a man said. “You. Big guy.”
Delta looked over his shoulder. A man in a dark uniform and sunglasses was stepping out of the car. Another man in dark glasses sat at the steering wheel, holding a radio.
“Yeah, you,” the policeman said. “Come here.”
Delta shook his head.
“You keep walking, and I can arrest you for resistance,” said the cop. His hand rested on his weapon.
Delta hesitated. He wasn’t afraid of the policeman or his gun. For the first time in a long time, he thought about what it would mean to kill somebody. He could cross that gap between them in a second, and he could twist the cop’s head off in the next.
His hands twitched. He turned to face him, drawing upright. At his full height, he stood eight and a half feet tall. To the cop’s credit, he didn’t flinch, but he did unbutton his holster.
“You better not cause trouble,” said the cop. “I put in a call to the state hospital. They’ll pick you up in 30 minutes.”
“There you are,” a man said in a colorless voice. “Hey, thanks officer. I’ve been looking for this guy.”
Delta scanned the street. A big white guy in a Panama hat, long-sleeved shirt, and slacks was strolling up the sidewalk toward him. He wore aviator glasses. And hell, he was a lot bigger than most people. Delta’s eyes locked on him, wondering.
“This guy’s yours?” asked the cop. “I don’t recognize you. Are you from out of town?”
“Yep,” said the stranger.
Delta brought his hands up and started signing, hoping against hope. He didn’t dare make sounds. Making sounds would make it worse.
“Who are you?” he asked.
To his shock, the big guy signed back.
“A friend,” he said. “Hold still. Don’t scare the guy.”
“Okay.”
The cop relaxed and buttoned his gun. “Oh, I see. Deaf mute?”
“Just mute.” The guy’s voice was rough and grumbly like from cigarettes. “Don’t worry, his bark is worse than his bite.” He turned to Delta. A white man, probably. Looked old, perhaps in his sixties. “Come here, will you, buddy? You’re scaring the people out here.”
He also signed at him: “Don’t worry. We have to get you off the street.”
“What do you want?” Delta asked.
“I’ll tell you once I deal with the fuzz.”
“What’s he saying?” the cop said.
“That he got lost,” said the stranger. “He wondered where I’d gotten to.”
“Okay, okay. Just get that guy off the street,” the cop said, sliding back into the car. “He’s scaring people.”
With that, the stranger walked up to him—Delta had backed up under the awning of a sub shop—and held out his hand. There was a gap between cuff and arm. It was an old, wrinkled arm, liver spots on the hands. But once this close, Delta could see the faint traces of Plasmid scarring across the knuckles, down the arm, across the palms, like jags of lightning.
Delta rolled his arm and looked down. He had the same scarring, faint and shining in the sun. Suddenly he felt cold.
Delta shook his head “no.”
“Please go away,” he signed. “I don’t need help.”
“You’re going to get shot without me. Trust me.” The stranger set a hand on his wrist. His palm was rough.
“You’re from there,” Delta signed.
“Same as you,” the stranger signed back. “Come on. I’ve got a place for you to stay.”
“I already have a place,” Delta said.
“So why did you leave it?” asked the stranger, taking him by the elbow. He wasn’t signing anymore, but speaking aloud.
Delta found himself following. What else could he do? The idea of going back to the farmhouse closed his throat. He didn’t want to see Eleanor. He didn’t want to see anyone. He wanted to disappear.
It was astonishing for him to realize that he hadn’t suffered from an intrusive memory once since fleeing the house. He held himself a little straighter. He had a clearer head than he could remember since… well, the beginning. Thoughts seemed to be coming to him faster. That was a good sign, right?
“So where were you going?” asked the stranger. He directed him down a quiet side street. Delta followed.
“I don’t know.”
“A guy like you stands out. You aren’t safe here. Maybe you’d be safe in a big city. Maybe.” The stranger looked up at him, unsmiling. “There are people looking for you and your girls, you know. Powerful people.”
Delta stared down, eyes wide.
“Who?” he asked. “Why?”
“Can you imagine a whole military filled with people like you?” asked the man. “Big, powerful, always following orders?”
Delta shuddered. “But that would hurt them.”
“They don’t care.” The man smiled grimly. “Look, I need something from Dr. Tenenbaum.”
With that, the man whistled. From a side street, two skinny guys in bib overalls came running, both holding paper bags filled with groceries. They wore faded ballcaps and shoes that were just a little too big. Delta’s first thought was that they were mechanics.
They pattered up on either side, staring up unabashedly into Delta’s face, and the smell of them hit him like a brick. He stared back in shock. These weren’t guys—these were Sisters. There was the unnatural height, the unnatural slenderness, the strange eyes. Both were dark-skinned—one probably had parents from India; the other’s might have been from Mexico. They were cured Sisters, too. No fingers picked at his thoughts.
“Tell me,” said the stranger. “How close is too close for your Sister?”
“Six, maybe seven miles,” Delta said. “I need to get out of town.”
He couldn’t believe how easily it came out of his hands. The idea of leaving Eleanor filled him with an overwhelming relief.
“You want to leave your Sister?” asked one of the girls. Her eyes were huge.
“Yes.” Delta glanced aside into a storefront. “She…”
He couldn’t think of what to say. She told his secret to everybody? She wouldn’t listen to him when he said no? She didn’t care about his feelings? It all sounded so silly when he thought about it.
“Don’t know much about Alpha series,” said the stranger. “I never met one. But I heard they each only had one Sister. I’m guessing your Sister is the, ah… possessive type?”
It felt horrible to think it. Possessive—Eleanor, possessive. Admitting to it felt like name-calling, so Delta said nothing. He looked away.
“We have to assume she’s headed this way,” said the stranger. “So we do one of two things: we jump on a train or we get on a bus. What do you feel like doing, Mr. B?”
Delta rubbed his arms. “What’s fastest?”
“John Barton, there you are,” a familiar voice drawled out. “Now I know you aren’t heading off somewhere with strangers.”
Delta whirled. So did the stranger and the Sisters. Sinclair leaned out the window of his car, rolling a cigarette in his mouth.
“Augustus Sinclair,” said the stranger in a wondering voice. “I knew you were around here.”
“Who’s he?” asked one of the girls, signing.
“Oh, I’m just the friend of this big lug here,” said Sinclair, jerking his chin up at Delta. “Come on, big hoss. You’re coming back with me.”
Delta shook his head, backing into the wall.
Sinclair laughed.
“Some things never change,” he said. “Chief, what on Earth could possess you to come all the way out here? Those girls back home called me cryin’ up a storm.”
Sinclair was talking like they hadn’t kissed at all! Delta burned. Could no one hear him? Would no one take him seriously at all? Was he cursed to be shunted from one person to another for the rest of eternity?
“Looks like the big guy’s made up his mind,” said the stranger. “Gotta say I understand the sentiment.”
“I must admit, I’m at a bit of a loss,” said Sinclair, swinging his door open. “You know who I am, but I haven’t got a clue about you.” He pushed himself upright, balanced on the car. “Do give me the pleasure of your introduction.”
“Oh, we’ve never met.” The man took off his glasses and his hat and shook his hair out. He was gray-headed, had a short, scruffy beard. When he raised his head, he smiled. His irises glowed faintly gold. “The name is Jack Wynand. You knew my father.”
Sinclair’s smile never broke. He laughed and leaned back against his car.
“Well, well, well,” he said. “Must say, never thought I’d see you in the flesh. Tell me, what use do you have for an old Alpha model, anyway?”
Delta bristled. Sinclair wasn’t looking at him. Sinclair’s eyes were locked on Jack’s.
Jack bent his head. “It’s less about him and more about Tenenbaum,” he said. “If she can revert Big Daddies…”
“Now how’d you figure that out?” Sinclair asked.
“…then she can revert me.” Jack bent his head. “I want ADAM stripped from me. I don’t care what it does.”
The Sisters shrank at his sides, faces full of misgiving.
“With your luck, it’d shrink you to a fetus,” said Sinclair.
“Then that’s what I want,” Jack said.
“Well, son, you’re too late,” Sinclair said. “No ADAM left. Not a drop. Takes gallons for something like that, from what I understand.”
“And you?” asked Jack.
“Me?” Sinclair asked.
A car stopped behind Sinclair’s, honked, and then slowly pulled around them. Sinclair waved at them, gave them an apologetic grimace, turned back to Jack.
Jack spoke again. “So they saved you, and they saved Dr. Porter, but they didn’t save this man here.” Jack jerked his thumb over his shoulder.
Delta glanced down at the thumb, then at Sinclair. Sinclair didn’t skip a beat. His brows rose and he gave Jack a brilliant smile.
“I see you’ve done your homework!” he said.
“Answer me,” said Jack. “Why did they save one of the biggest sharks of Rapture before one of his victims?”
Sinclair’s smile was finally cooling. “Well, son, if you don’t know, then I don’t think you ought to.”
Delta felt the flicker at the edge of his mind a second too late.
The air shuddered. There was a tearing, popping sound. Suddenly Eleanor was directly behind him, pressed up against his back. Delta closed his eyes, shoulders sinking. The two Sisters whirled to face her, mouths agape. Jack turned slowly, fingers flexing. He dropped his cigarette. It fell from his fingers like he’d forgotten it.
“Oh, Eleanor,” said Sinclair. “You’re a sight for sore eyes. Your boy’s made a hell of a friend today.”
Big Sisters slowly stepped out of the alleys on either side of them, eyes locked on Jack. They were wearing slacks and jeans and what Tenenbaum called their “garden shoes.” Their fingers were curled into claws. There was a heaviness in the air that could not be explained by the weather.
“I think you better get moving, son,” said Sinclair, leaning back against the car.
“I’m going with him,” Delta signed.
Finally, a reaction. One of the Sisters gasped. Eleanor’s hand tightened on his wrist. Sinclair went white.
“Honey, you don’t want to do that,” he said.
“Nobody cares what I want,” Delta said.
“That’s not true!” Eleanor said. The words poured out of her so fast that at first they weren’t comprehensible.
“There are only two people here who know what it’s like to be us,” Jack said softly. His fingers were twitching, twitching, twitching. “Don’t you agree, Subject Delta?”
“I don’t want to fight,” Delta said quickly. “I just want to leave. I’ll go anywhere.”
“Daddy!” Eleanor said. “Don’t!”
Her voice was panicky. Delta savored it—until she pushed into his mind. She was simply there, effortlessly, and she could see everything, and she was crying, but he couldn’t push her out, he wasn’t equipped to push her out, they’d never made him as anything other than a gun she summoned at a whim.
He roared and twisted out of her grip. The Sisters all jumped, Sinclair twitched, and even Jack sprang back. Delta thrilled to it. Yes, jump! Good old Subject Delta! Good old chief! He’ll do anything you ask for a smile and a pat on the back!
“You all think I’m a child!” Delta said. “You all think I’m an idiot!”
“I don’t think that at all!” Eleanor said.
“Stop telling me what to do!” Delta said. “I’m tired!”
“Eleanor,” Sinclair said. “Maybe I should take over.”
She whirled on him, her mouth opening and shutting. Sinclair was white, and he was no longer smiling. His eyes locked on Delta’s.
“You know what you need, honey?” he asked. He held up a hand. “You need out of this sun.” He extended a finger. “You need a sit.” A second finger rose. “You need a cold drink.” A third finger. “And more than that, you need to get out of this little town before the sheriff shows up. Come on. I’ll take you to my place.”
Eleanor shook her head over and over, but the Sisters were moving in. One grabbed her arm. The others kept a healthy distance from Jack and his Sisters, both of whom had set their bags of groceries against the wall and shoved their hands into their pockets.
Jack hadn’t moved at all. He had watched. He had listened. His eyes were unnaturally bright.
“Delta,” he said, “if you come with me, I promise I’ll treat you like a person deserves.”
Eleanor sputtered, frozen between taking complete control of his body—forcing him back to the house—and letting go. Jack waited, only watching, only listening. Who knew what he wanted? But Delta was staring at Sinclair, swaying in place like one hypnotized.
Suddenly all of his memories seemed so foolish. How long ago had they been, anyway? Sinclair probably had a new boyfriend already. He probably got over Delta back when he died the first time. He’d locked him up in a room. What kind of guy locked people up in rooms?
“Are you going to lock me up?” Delta asked.
Now it was Sinclair’s turn to flinch. His eyes were wet.
“Oh, John,” he said.
He said it in such a defeated, quiet way.
Delta sighed. He sank down.
“I’m going with Sinclair,” he said. “Thanks, Jack.”
The Sisters relaxed. Eleanor’s mind grudgingly lifted from his. She rubbed her arm across her face.
Jack glanced up at him. “You’re making a mistake,” he said.
“I know,” Delta said, and stepped into the street.

Hermitcraft Fic Rec!
HELLO. i have hundreds, HUNDREDS of hermitcraft fanfiction bookmarked and living in my brain without rent. Breaking this up into categories for some of my PERSONAL favorite fics in the fandom- including categories for shipping, crossover, and worldbuilding.
Some of these fics are from 2019 but generally speaking you don't need knowledge of past seasons you should be able to pick up on just about all of them. a lot of these are mostly included BECAUSE they're older and therefore, harder to accidentally stumble upon. put in no particular order.
If your fic is on here and you'd like it removed, send an Ask with the fic, a dm, etc
World Building
The Parting Glass / To Pass The Jungle You Have To Go All The Way Around - Sekrap.
Doc has been trying to forget. He has done everything everyone told him he should do to make the memories go away. And still the jungle calls for him. / He was a monster. Then, a man. Now, a machine. Doc, once a normal Creeper, was not meant to live. Let alone become a Player. He learned to speak, he learned to fight, he learned to build. Some things stayed the same. aka- the Domestic Creeper au.
____
Carpet Trick - CrazyCatMeow
You all know the double carpet trick right? What happens when that joint with a tired mad scientist meet.
Mob hybrids can't see carpets <3 extra silly and very lighthearted
____
Window Pane - blueticked
Tango and Impulse discuss the brand new presence of Helsknight.
It's not a coincidence that all the evil personas have red eyes.

____
"I know" - KindaJustHere
Bdubs was used to death. He was used to being killed by his fellow hermits. He was very used to being killed by Grian. Maybe a little too much.

____
For the Record - Anonymous
Tango shrugged. “Yeah, I guess I did. Xisuma’s teaching Impulse some Galactic Standard so he can cheat at enchanting or something. Apparently Xelqua’s, like, some sort of god in Xisuma’s culture? It was kind of unclear, I wasn’t paying attention when Impulse told me.”
“Huh,” Grian said vacantly. “How about that.”
oops! Grian is Xisuma's god. amazing
____ GrianMC - SixteenthDays
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,” Techno says frankly.
“You know,” Grian says again. “Your- Watchers.”
Techno squints for a moment before understanding visibly dawns behind his eyes. “Ohhh, you mean Chat?”
(On watchers, and Watchers.)
This IS technically a crossover but its more worldbuilding than anything else. its literally so funny. i love it
Crossover
These Days I Don't Feel Like Myself At All / Mercury (No One Can Unring This Bell) (Series Ongoing) - RoguishOne (DarkWolfMoon)
TommyInnit had died. Again. To Dream. Again. And it sucked exactly as much as he thought it would because he'd wanted to move on and have a chance to actually live this time. Seems he won't be getting that.
Then he gets pulled out of Limbo, but he doesn't wake up back in the cell with Dream or next to his bed on the server. He doesn't wake up on the Dream SMP at all.
Little does he know that this is the least of his worries.
i want to scream and cry and hypervenilate thinking about this fic series. literally cannot recommend it enough. your life will be ROCKED. THE WRITING IS SOOOOO OGOOOD . i just want to shake. i cannot put into words what this fic makes me feel.
____
Shells in the Foam (a Hermit!Tommy fanfic) - Cedarwhisp21
When Dream attacks Tommy in Logestshire, Tommy runs. Badly injured, he somehow manages to slip between worlds and wakes up in a badlands biome, on a server far from home, with no other players in sight.
The Hermits are surprised when a new player logs in, and confused when no-one's at spawn. Five days later, after waiting for the new player to introduce themselves, Xisuma uses his admin abilities to access their coordinates. He takes Impulse with him to welcome the new player to Hermitcraft, but instead of the beginnings of a base, they find something a lot more concerning.
NEEDS NO INTRODUCTION. the NUMBER ONE kudo-ed hermit fic . by my beloved. and using the one of the beloved au by pertrichormeraki . its so good and im sooo glad i was here for the ride of seeing it unfold <3

Scared as hell - Nhi_theuserof_this
Grian was one of the closest people to Fundy at this point. He wants to be honest, really, but with the rest of his family history being a total train wreck, he spends an awkwardly long time dancing around what he wants to say.

I Hate You (I Promise I Don't) - BewitchingNotes
If someone asked Grian why he was relentlessly pranking Etho now that he was finally back in Hermitland, he'd say it was just for pure fun.
To Etho, it meant Grian was mad at him.
To everyone else, Grian had a huge crush on the redstone user and obviously didn't know how to communicate it.
OR: Grian just wants Etho's attention, Etho misreads this as Grian being mad at him, Grian thinks Etho hates him because of his pranks and everyone else just wants these boys to communicate properly already. Grian's love language is pranks...i love it

A Few Thoughts About Hurt/Comfort
I have been asked this month to make a post about hurt/comfort in Avengers comics. And I love h/c -- I actually have a massive number of WIPs right now that are h/c -- so I am very happy to talk about it! Anyway, this is not really all that planned out and this mostly turned into an excursus on Tony Stark's pain. I'm sure you're all surprised.
Like pretty much everyone else, I'm sure, I have found that everything lately has been... pretty tough. And the coping mechanism that really got me through last year and this year was reading and writing a lot of h/c, on the theory that, however lousy a day I'm having, I can absolutely make sure that Tony Stark has a worse one. And then I can make sure he gets hugs. Wish fulfillment? Why, yes. (Once at Hallmark I was trying to find a "get well soon" card, forgot what it was called, and described it to my wife as "a hurt/comfort card.") I think Marvel Comics -- the Avengers side, in particular -- is an interesting canon for h/c for a lot of reasons. Though, honestly, if you asked me to recommend you, a hurt/comfort fan, a new fandom, I would probably just hand you some Starsky & Hutch DVDs. Go watch "The Fix" and get back to me later. If you like that, there's way more where that came from. But there's still lots to love in Marvel! Superhero comics are really a goldmine as far as the hurt side of h/c. Because superheroes, and you probably have noticed this, get hurt a lot. They get hurt repeatedly, in fantastical ways that are probably impossible in real life both physically and emotionally (at least, I don't think anyone's invented mind control yet), and even the heroes without superhuman healing powers tend to get physically hurt a whole lot worse than actual people can take. Currently in Iron Man comics, Tony has a broken back and is dealing with this by locking himself into the armor as a backboard and injecting himself with massive doses of painkillers. He's busy! He's got stuff to do! He doesn't have time to lie around and heal! So, basically, if you name a kind of pain that you would like to see happen to a character, it's probably happened to superheroes. Multiple times. The downside, though, is that comics do not really deliver that well when it comes to the comfort part of h/c. They could. It's not inherent to the medium that they don't. But because of the serial nature of comics and also the fact the primary audience is dudes who want to read about people in spandex punching each other, a lot of the time they don't really feel the need to provide closure and write about people dealing with any of the hurt. (Raise your hand if you're still annoyed with the end of Hickman's Avengers run.) But at the same time, I think that's a quality that makes Avengers ripe for h/c fanfic. Because, generally speaking, fandom likes to provide the things that canon doesn't, and fandom is more than happy to provide the comfort. If you enjoy canonical h/c in comics, I think you really can't go wrong with Iron Man. One of the big innovations of modern Marvel Comics was the concept that heroes would also suffer from relatable human problems, and in practice what this means is that a lot of heroes start with a fully-loaded angst-ridden backstory and origin story, ripe for h/c. So Tony starts out by incurring a heart injury that he fully expects is going to kill him, which he responds to by vowing he won't get close to anyone so they won't be sad when he dies, and throughout the early Silver Age is constantly on the brink of death as his heart nearly gives out on him practically every issue. And then even after his heart gets (mostly) better, there are various plots involving his armor being detrimental to his health and him choosing to fight on anyway. It's hard for me to think of another superhero hitting that particular variety of h/c in exactly the same way. Sure, superheroes risk their lives constantly, because this is how superhero comics work, but Tony is the only one I can think of who is this constantly this badly off, physically. Like, think of all the other heroes who have had a continual solo presence as fan favorites across Marvel history -- Captain America, Thor, Spider-Man, Wolverine, maybe even Deadpool. You know what those guys all have? Healing factors! For the most part, they are not running around continually on the verge of death, and while there are certainly memorable arcs involving several of them being severely injured and/or dead, you really have to work at it. It's not their constant state of affairs, whereas Tony is the kind of superhero who shows up to a fight already bleeding out under his armor. Yeah, I know Extremis gave him a healing factor. But he didn't have it very long, and also he did some extremely dangerous things while he did have it; I'm pretty sure I've never seen Wolverine saying that he'll just solve a problem by cutting off his own foot. So, anyway, yeah, there are a bunch of good arcs involving h/c for Tony. If you're looking for physical injury, he has a whole bunch of heart problems over the years, gets several new hearts, then ruins his brain, et cetera. That level of hurt is basically the background pain of Tony's life; every so often, his heart will get damaged or he'll have to live in the armor or the armor will be killing him, et cetera. If you're looking for more unusual trauma, I am, as always, going to rec Manhunt, a relatively obscure arc in late v3 (IM v3 #65-69) in which Tony has an extremely bad week. His tech is stolen and used to bomb a building. Then he gets shot in the chest. Then while he's at the hospital a nurse tries and fails to poison him, and she then tries to beat him to death. Then he checks himself out of the hospital and a helicopter shoots missiles at him. Then he becomes a fugitive from justice. And then, oh, yeah, he has to fight the Mandarin. It is... a lot. (Volume 3 of Iron Man is pretty good as far as h/c possibilities. You've got a lot of physical pain, Carol's drinking arc, the Sentient Armor, both DreamVision arcs, and Manhunt. Manhunt is finally supposed to be out in trade this month, by the way.) There are of course the drinking arcs, which probably count as their own type of hurt. But if you haven't read the second drinking arc (IM #160-200), please do. Marvel likes to up the stakes on events (Fear Itself, Secret Empire) by making Tony drink, and it does work, I think. I feel like I've spoken at length about Tony's drinking elsewhere so I don't really want to rehash it all here. And then there's the emotional pain. Angst and drama is something that happens to a whole bunch of characters, yes, especially in comics, but somehow Tony seems to end up with possibly more than his fair share of it. Fandom likes to make a lot of Howard Stark's A+ Parenting, so much so that you might think, if you didn't know canon, that this was just fandom running with a throwaway mention of Tony's terrible childhood and making it worse. But, no, canon really does go there with a reasonable amount of frequency. Howard's actual first appearance is in a flashback where he's ordering teenage Tony to break up with his girlfriend because she's the daughter of one of Howard's business rivals. And then we get into the verbal abuse, and the physical abuse, and the time Howard made Tony take his first drink, and the part where Howard was a demon in hell who Tony fought while he insulted him. And more! Currently, in canon, Howard is alive again and is in league with Mephisto for the express purpose of ruining Tony's life. Also when Tony was a baby, Howard tried to trade him to Dracula. I think you can make an argument that fandom is actually showing restraint when compared to canon. Tony also has a whole lot of Terrible Exes whose presence and/or former presence in Tony's life can be used for a lot of hurt. If you've read any amount of fanfic, you probably know that the exes who get the most play in fandom are Sunset Bain and Tiberius Stone -- not that Tony and Ty were ever canonically a couple, of course, but fandom is definitely enamored of this idea. Ty and Sunset both have relatively similar interactions with Tony in canon, in that they are both liars and emotional abusers, heavy on the gaslighting, with the purpose of becoming more successful than Tony. They both also attempt to murder Tony, although this is after he figures out they're evil, at least. (Yes, I know, this is not how either of them usually appear in AUs.) Tony also has a bunch of exes who also have just straight-up tried to murder or otherwise hurt him, sometimes while they are dating, and sometimes before Tony dates them: Whitney Frost, Indries Moomji, Kathy Dare, and Maya Hansen come to mind. There are probably more I'm not thinking of! But, yes, if you want to write about a guy in a series of terrible relationships, please consider Iron Man comics. If mind control is one of your favorite flavors of hurt, Tony's pretty good for that too. We all know about The Crossing. I suppose when I say "mind control" I mostly mean "armor control" because there are an awful lot of plots where someone else makes Tony's armor do whatever they want it to do and Tony is along for the ride -- Demon in a Bottle, Sentient Armor, and Execute Program are the first things that come to mind. There is also a fairly obscure What If that is What If Iron Man Lost The Armor Wars in which Justin Hammer apparently really wants Tony in a mind control collar to take off all his clothes and lounge around in his underwear. No, really. I think a lot of pain for Tony often revolves around his issues with control, generally -- his alcoholism comes into play here again. The entire aftermath of Civil War is also notable for its propensity to hurt Tony over and over and over. Is he stoically soldiering on through his grief after Steve dies? Hell, no! He cries, like, six separate times. He 100% blames himself for Steve's death. It's great. Everybody loves The Confession and the funeral in Fallen Son, but one of my personal favorites is Avengers/Invaders, in which Tony is confronted with a time-traveling Steve from WWII and in order not to screw up the timeline, he can't tell Steve he knows him. He is clearly not coping well. He shuts himself in a room with a giant wall of pictures of Steve! Also there's a part where he has to try to convince Steve he can trust him and he ends up having to tie Steve to a chair to talk to him, and Steve looks at him and asks, "Who did you kill to get where you are?" and I feel like that is probably one of the worst moments in Tony's life. No wonder he gave himself amnesia. So now we might want to ask, okay, but why is hurting Tony in fanfiction so much fun? I mean, I can tell you why I think it's fun. I can't speak for anyone else. One reason is that he is very emotional and very affected by everything he does. Sometimes you will see people complaining that the heroes of m/m fanfic cry too much and this is not realistic. This is not a problem if you're writing Tony! He can cry as much as you want and it's perfectly in character. I don't think it would be as fun to hurt him if he didn't express so much of his pain. But he does. He also feels guilty, and for me that's a very satisfying character element. If he were well-adjusted and didn't blame himself for so many things, it wouldn't be nearly as fun as watching him blame himself for everyone whose death he thinks he is responsible for, whether or not he is. And then he just keeps going, and it's, y'know, nice to watch him be resilient, too. So, I guess, I think hurting him is interesting because it's easy to hurt him, his weak points are pretty obvious, and he reacts a lot. Steve doesn't hurt quite as much as Tony does, in canon. It's certainly possible to hurt him -- I mean, they did actually kill him after Civil War, after all -- but I don't think the canonical patterns of hurting him are as numerous. Obviously deseruming Steve is a fairly popular go-to in terms of physical hurt; he's been deserumed at least three times that I know of. I think's easy to see the appeal there of taking a character who is fairly physically resilient and making him... much less so. Certainly Marvel seems to see the appeal. But other than that I don't think he has any other really common way to get physically injured. Unlike Tony, whose origin story is basically "oh no, I've acquired a disability," Steve's origin story is "I drank a serum that cured all my disabilities." Which, I mean, great wish fulfillment but there's not really as much there to poke at. Pretty much all of Steve's pain is emotional, but, unlike Tony, his pain isn't often specifically in response to someone directly, purposefully hurting him. Hickman's Avengers run is a big exception, yes. His pain seems to come up most often as a kind of situational angst. He feels like a man out of time. He feels out of touch with the modern era, with people his own age. He feels guilt because he feels responsible for Bucky's death. He feels like he can't trust the government and therefore he can't be Captain America. He worries that he doesn't know how to have a normal life. And, yes, these are deep and important worries but it's different than, like, Indries Moomji dumping Tony with the intent to make him sad enough to start drinking. Very few of Steve's villains want to personally ruin Steve's entire life the way Tony's villains do; mostly they just want to do things like bring back the Nazis. In terms of Steve's potential for h/c, I think Steve is harder to hurt than Tony is. Physically, he is definitely harder to hurt. You can deserum him, sure, but unless you want everything you write to be a deseruming fic you're probably not going to want to do that more than a couple of times. And if you want to hurt him physically while he has the serum, you have to hurt him hard. Usually past the point where a regular human would ever survive it. He's also harder to break, emotionally, than Tony is -- which means it's very satisfying when you can get him to break, but this is a guy who's only cried twice (that I remember) in canon. So if you want to get him to cry, you really, really have to wreck him, and he doesn't have as many obvious weak spots. He also doesn't generally sit around blaming himself for things that aren't his fault, and the whole "stewing in guilt" genre of plots for him basically came down to "he was sad that he thought Bucky's death was his fault," and that's really the biggest regret he seems to have, and also Bucky's not dead anymore. The Steve/Tony relationship itself, I would think, is also appealing to h/c fans because canon provides a lot of ways for them to hurt each other. Some people only ship pairings who would never, y'know, take turns beating each other half to death in major event comics. (And for a lot of Marvel Comics history, that was also Steve & Tony, so if you want them to be BFFs who have never fought, you can just set your fic earlier.) They have definitely hurt each other both physically and emotionally, so if you're looking for something easy and satisfying as a h/c fan, you can just read or write something where they... make up. What about Marvel characters other than Steve and Tony? Surely some of them are angsty, yes? Well, yes, but also it depends on the particular flavor of angst that you like. If you like the way Tony hurts, you may very well enjoy Doctor Strange comics, because they have a very similar attitude towards life -- they are both former alcoholics whose origin stories involve physical disabilities, who routinely make tactical decisions that negatively affect their continued existence and/or happiness a whole lot. It's very much an "I must suffer alone in the dark and no one will ever know what I am doing to save the world but it's the right thing to do" sort of vibe. Like, you can read comics where Strange is lying in hell with two broken legs, hallucinating that Clea has finally come to save him. Strange's biggest fear, akin to Tony's control issues, is basically that one day he's going to be an asshole again, so he's out there trying as hard as he can to do good. Also, if you like tentacles, he has all of them. I mean that. Carol also occasionally hits similar angst spots, and her drinking arc is great. A lot of people like Natasha, too; I have read zero Black Widow comics but I get the impression many people enjoy her brand of angst. The mutant metaphor is a little different in terms of overall vibe, but some people really like it as a source of angst -- the whole "protecting a world who hates and fears them" thing. It may not work for you, but if you like your hurt to include things like systemic oppression, go pick up some X-Men comics. Start with something like God Loves Man Kills. I feel like I liked this sort of thing a lot more as a teenager but that I kind of aged out of liking the mutants quite so much. It's also worth mentioning that not everything that hits the spot in one universe will be the same in the others, and I'm mentioning this because I feel like I have to say something about MCU Bucky. MCU fandom seems to get a lot of mileage out of Bucky's guilt about being the Winter Soldier, everything he was forced to do, et cetera. I have definitely read my share of those fics, and FATWS sure went right for that angst too. But as far as I can tell, he doesn't hit the same way at all in 616. And I like him a lot in 616; I'm always pleased when he shows up on a team. (He was so good in Strikeforce. Everyone was so good in Strikeforce.) But the thing is, 616 Bucky is, basically, phenomenally well-adjusted, given everything he's gone through, and I'm including the time he wrestled a bear in a gulag. He gets over having been the Winter Soldier, and now he's just, y'know, a guy with a cool arm who likes to bring guns to every fight to horrify his teammates, and he snarks at Clint. If you're looking for that angst, that is really not him these days. He's all better. So pretty much all that is canon. So what do we do in fandom for h/c? Well, as far as I can tell, a decent amount of it is canon-based or very canon-close -- there are a whole lot of stories exploring the angst of Civil War or Hickman's Avengers run. Tony's drinking comes up a fair amount, and if one of Tony's Evil Exes comes back to haunt him, it's pretty much only Tiberius Stone. I don't think I've read a lot of fic with Steve getting deserumed; it doesn't seem as popular in fandom as in canon. When Steve gets hurt, he tends to just get physically whumped pretty hard, and there's a fair amount of that for Tony too, but of course Steve can take more. There's also a thriving, uh, subgenre of pain involving Hydra Steve doing terrible things to Tony, presumably the terrible things he would have wanted to do to Tony in canon if Tony had had a flesh body. There's the usual kinds of h/c setups that appear in basically every fandom as well -- sickfic, whump, dub-con/non-con. You get the idea. But since fandom in general likes to take specific inspiration from canon, there's a lot of fic where the hurt tends to resemble things that happen more in canon. Like, I feel like comics fic probably has more tentacle fic and more mind control than canons that don't come pre-stocked with those. Probably everybody has a whole lot of "tied up by bad guys," though. And then, of course, fandom brings the comfort that canon does not. This is true in pretty much every fandom -- I mean, you aren't going to find a lot of actual canons where Character A saves Character B from mortal peril and then there's gay sex -- but, like I was saying, comics don't provide a lot of closure before it's onto the next thing. Usually with a different creative team, who has no interest in wrapping up anything from the last team. Steve and Tony talked about the incursions exactly once after Secret Wars and nobody mentioned the part where Steve spent several months trying to hunt Tony down and kill him. Tony is never going to remember the events of Civil War. Hydra Steve died ignominiously in a fire and no one has ever talked about him again. Honestly, if you're looking for a way to get some comfort in your fanfic, picking an event, any event, and just having the characters talk about it will be way more than any of them get in canon. I feel like honestly that can often be a pretty satisfying to read. And even though comics canon physically hurts characters pretty often and pretty badly, they also often skip right past the recovery. Maybe you'll get one page of a character in a hospital bed at the end of the story arc. Maybe you won't. Demon in a Bottle has one splash page of Tony going through alcohol withdrawal and then he's all better. I think Manhunt skips to Tony getting out of the hospital at the end. That's just not a story that they want to tell very often. The second drinking arc is notable in that it devotes almost as many issues to Tony's recovery as it does to getting him to rock-bottom. Similarly, Steve is done with his Nomad angst way way faster than you probably think he is (though The Captain does go in for a fair number of issues). So one of the things we often want to do in fandom is focus on all the bits that canon skips over, both in the "why did no one ever mention this story arc ever again" way and the "wow, so how long are they in the hospital after that" way. That's really all I can think of about h/c! I'm off to write some more of it!

Chapter 4
“We could use a healer over here!”
Clint’s voice had come over comms, and you looked around the area trying to figure out where ‘here’ actually was.  You eventually spotted both him and Natasha with a group of children, sheltering under a bridge.
You took a quick looked around, and ran out from your hiding spot, vaulting over a stone fence as you charged in the direction of Clint and Natasha.  Gunfire immediately broke out and you caught a bullet in the side.  It slowed you for a moment as a hot pain flared out and then died back off.  By the time you reached Natasha and Clint, the only sign that you had been shot at all was a hole in your catsuit and some already drying blood.
“Think this might be above your abilities,” Natasha said.  She was cradling a young boy, and when you moved closer she moved her hand showing you where their leg now had broken exposed bone.
“Fuck,” you cursed, crouching down.
“She said a bad word,” a very young girl said.
“She sure did.  And right now you all have special Avengers’ permission to say as many bad words as you know,” Clint said, as he loosed a couple of arrows. “Ready… set… go.”
The group of children all broke out into random cursing and you looked at Natasha.  “I’m gonna try blood.  Pray to Thor that we match.  Can you get that bone back into alignment?”
Natasha nodded.  “Okay, malysh,” Natasha soothed and took one of her lives out of its leather holsters.  “This is going to hurt a lot.  But I need you to be very brave for me and hold as still as you can.  And when we’re done, we’ll make sure you get home safe with your family.  I promise.”
He nodded weakly and she held the leather holster to his lips.  “Bite down on this, little one.”
The boy bit down into the leather and Natasha quickly snapped the bones back into place with a loud and gut turning crack.  The boy screamed into the holster and passed out. You took the knife that the holster homed and cut open your arm.
You had been part of the Avengers for over three years now.  One mission had turned into many and you had gone from being a new recruit to a full-fledged agent.  You settled into life at the compound and the memory of a time where you were scared and didn’t know exactly how you could use your powers to help people.
You had friends and a routine and you dated on and off and when you were off you would hook up with Natasha and Clint because they were just that little bit too hard to resist.  Especially when you’d just gone through a breakup.  You considered them your best friends and you loved their relationship dynamic.  They were hilarious together and their way of showing affection was so perfectly them.
Most of your missions were with one or the other or both.  The closeness had made you be able to work like a well-oiled machine together, being able to predict each other’s patterns and counter each other.  This particular mission was a big one though.  A small town in the Midwest had been attacked by domestic terrorists and the whole team had been sent out to stop it.
As your blood mixed with the boy’s, nothing seemed to happen.  You cursed the stupid limitations of your powers and you were just about to let your own wound close back up when you noticed the bones and flesh knitting back together on the boy’s leg.  You had to keep twisting the knife in your own wound to keep the blood flowing and your hand was beginning to shake from the pain.  As the wound closed you let go of the knife and your own cut rapidly healed.  Color returned to his skin and his eyes fluttered open.
“Thank Thor,” Clint sighed.  He turned back to look at the kids like he was planning what the next move should be and there was a crack from a bolt of lightning behind him, making him jump
“You can save the thanks for when I have actually helped,” Thor teased, playfully.  “Come, your extraction has arrived.”
A huge armored vehicle pulled up at the bridge and the side opened.  Clint ran to the side of the truck and began loosing arrows out past it, creative cover.
“Come, little ones,” Natasha said.  “Onto the truck.”
You and she herded the children into the vehicle, carrying the injured boy into the back and putting him on a stretcher.  When you were all safe inside, Clint climbed in and pulled the door closed behind him.
“Hold tight,” the agent driving called back.  Clint sat down on one of the benches as the truck took off much faster than you expected.
“How close are we to being done with this?”  You asked as a little girl climbed up into Clint’s lap and clung to him.  He wrapped an arm around her and held her steady as the truck bounced over the rough terrain.
“Captain Rogers is mounting an assault on the last remaining group now.  Shouldn’t be much longer,” the agent called back.  “You were the last group that had been cornered by them.”
“Thank god,” you sighed and let your head fall back against the wall of the truck.  You immediately regretted it, as it banged against metal.
You sat back up and watched Clint with the little girl.  She had calmed down and was gradually drifting off to sleep against him.
“Clint looks really good with kids,” you whispered to Nat.
She nodded.  “Yeah, he’s a natural with them.  I think because he is basically a giant child.”
You snorted and bumped her with your shoulder. “You were good with them too.  You guys gonna have kids someday?”
Natasha frowned.  “Can’t,” she said, trying to keep her voice neutral, but the slight strain giving away her pain.  “We want to.  But… the Red Room did something to me.  Having children creates weakness, so they sterilized me.  But… not… I mean… I have been pregnant but it ended up in a late-term miscarriage.”
“I’m so sorry, Natasha,” you said.  If it was anyone else you would have wrapped your arms around them and let them be weak.  Natasha would rather stab herself in the eye than let that happen though, so instead, you leaned against her a little, hoping that your weight might be comforting and allow her to be strong.  “Have you ever considered adoption?  Or surrogacy?”
She nodded.  “Surrogacy is out, it’s something about the genes.  They have a self destruct in them.  We applied to adopt but were told in no uncertain terms that no one is allowing an ex Russian-assassin adopt a child.”
“That fucking sucks,” you said, not quite sure what else you could say.  It did fucking suck and you wished there was something you could do.  You weren’t used to hearing that crack of pain in her voice.  It was akin to seeing Wanda in actual tears.
Natasha laughed softly.  “Yeah.  It does.  I’d love to be a mother.  But I guess for me, that isn’t to be.  I have escaped what the Red Room did to me.  I’ve tried making up for it.  I send money to the families of my victims.  I save people.  But they will always have this over me.”  She sighed and looked over at Clint.  “He says he’s okay with it.  I know that he would never complain about missing out, but I hate that my past has taken this from him too.  When he called me to tell me he met a healer that day when he met you, I got a little excited.  I thought… I hoped maybe you could undo what they did to me.  But that’s not how your powers work.”
You shook your head.  “I’m sorry.”
She rubbed your thigh.  “Not your fault.  You didn’t do this to me. They did,” she said. “Just have to accept that maybe after everything I did, I have to just be happy with the ending I get.  I am lucky I have him.  It’s enough.”
Tumblr media
You couldn’t stop thinking about the things Natasha had said on the way back to base, through the cleanup, on the ride home, and through the entire debrief.  Your powers couldn’t help fix what had happened to her.  Even if you gave her a full blood transfusion they couldn’t fix something that had been done to her so long ago.  You needed an exchange of fluids and it to be fresh.
Normally a surrogate wouldn’t work because whatever they’d done kicked in late on in the pregnancy due to genes.  But if you were the one that was pregnant, the issue wouldn’t be old, your powers would be here, correcting mistakes and potential health issues before they happened, and as far as fluids, they’d be soaking in them, and sharing your blood supply.  You didn’t know for sure if it would work, but the more you thought about it the more you were sure it would.
You thought about what it would be like having a baby for someone else.  It took a special kind of person to agree to put their body through that for almost a year and then to give that baby up.  It wasn’t for everyone and it would be hard, both physically and emotionally.  Clint and Natasha were your best friends and you might be the only chance they had to have kids together.  If you could give them that, you wanted to try.
After the debrief, everyone scattered to their rooms or apartments to sleep it off.  You couldn’t turn your mind off and so after half an hour of pacing your room, you went to Natasha and Clint’s apartment and knocked on the door.
Clint answered the door and looked you up and down, grinning.  “You didn’t get enough of us this week?”  He teased.
“I just… I wanted to…” You shook your head and took a deep breath.
“No offense, dorogáya,” Natasha said, coming over to the door.  “It’s been a long week and Clint and I just want to have some couple-time.”
“Right, yeah.  I’ll leave you to it,” you said, tapping your hands nervously on your thighs.  “I just… I wanted to say…”  You took a deep breath and let it out in a huff.  “Let me do it.”
“Let you do what?”  Clint said, putting his arm around your shoulder.  “Babe, what’s wrong?  You’re so worked up.”
Your eyes flicked between Clint and Natasha.  You didn’t know why you were so nervous.  This was a nice offer.  If they said no then they said no.  “Natasha,” you said.  “Nat.  Let me carry your baby.”

ATLA AO3 Fic Recs!
idk about how y’all are handling the state of the world rn, but i have retreated into the “consume every available fanfic ever” phase!! for anyone else who wants to read lots of Avatar: The Last Airbender fanfiction, i’ve gathered a list of some of my favs so far!! i’ve split it into gen series, zukka series, gen fics, and zukka fics because those are the types of fics i thrive in. they’re not in any particular order other than that.
i will say that a funny trend i recognized was that Haicrescendo on AO3 (@sword-and-stars on here) made it on to every single list because everything they write is amazing hahaha, feel free to do as i did and just read all of their atla fics. anyway!! here goes, hopes this helps people, ill prolly add onto it at some point haha.
GEN SERIES:
What We’re Given by Haicrescendo
The premise of the story is that Zuko, Iroh, and the crew set out when Zuko was banished, found out that the Sky Bisons never died out, turn their ship into the Jasmine Dragon (a tea shop on a boat!!!), and never hunted the Avatar. This series is so good, it’s currently updating every Friday I think and I love it so much.
Dragon of the Yuyan by 00AwkwardPenguin00
Summary is: “In which Zuko is fostered/adopted/raised/recruited by the Yuyan Archers of Pouhai Stronghold, and destiny hiccups.” Y’all I adore this series so much, I receive so much serotonin every time this updates. The plot develops really really nicely, the OC’s are my fav people ever, and the way the author uses the signing is just perfection. It’s currently updating every Saturday I think.
kintsugi by discordiansamba
Summary is: “au in which a banished for good zuko ends up being hired by the beifongs to watch over their daughter- or, zuko and toph never took that field trip in canon so now she gets to hog him for three whole years”. If y’all know me, y’all know I love some Zuko and Toph friendship. This story is PEAK bonding, it makes me so happy.
ZUKKA SERIES:
Quarantine and Chill 2020 by Haicrescendo
Literally what it says on the tin haha. Series about roommates Sokka and Zuko as they’re stuck in quarantine, first two are explicit, there’s four total so far, and I love them all. The characterization is immaculate, the banter had me cackling, and all in all just a great series!
Carry On For You by Haicrescendo
Summary is: “Not the Pokémon AU you asked for but the one you’re getting anyway. Featuring: full time gym leader and local cryptid Zuko, badge challenger Sokka, and Katara who can only look at so many memes before she flips.” Yall I know nothing about Pokémon but this series!!! It brings me SO much serotonin. I adore this series so much, we get Zuko interacting with animals at the same time as Zukka develops and Iroh is there and I just love it.
the best laid intentions by alittleduck
Post-show fics for the most part. Summary is: “Centers around members of the Gaang coming out to their well meaning but woefully unprepared friends. Part one is centered around Zuko coming out as gay, the second one is centered around Toph coming out as a lesbian and the third one is centered around Sokka coming to terms with his bisexuality.” I love this series a lot, it’s super cute and I thrive on LGBTQ+ gaang fics. We got gay Zuko, lesbian Toph, and bi Sokka and they make me so happy.
GEN FICS:
Embers by Vathara
Ooo boy, this is a long fic, but it is my absolute favorite fanfic in possibly any fandom I’ve been in. The summary for this fic is: “Dragon's fire is not so easily extinguished; when Zuko rediscovers a lost firebending technique, shifting flames can shift the world...” I dunno how to put it any better than that without spoilers!! It rewrites canon from I think Zuko and Iroh getting into Ba Sing Se on. Expect politics, interpersonal tension, several plot lines overlapping and weaving their ways through the story, amazingly developed OC’s, and just incredible writing overall. Definitely a must read.
For Hearth and Home by Haicrescendo
Post-show fic in which Zuko hangs out with a baby all day while everyone falls in love with him. Summary is: “In which Fire Lord Zuko is a total mess and somehow people manage to love him for it anyway.” Honestly I think that sums up the plot, this is just such a pure story, it cheers me up like instantly haha! This is one of the cutest and most relaxing fics I’ve read.
The Family You Choose by TunaFishChris
Show rewrite soulmate fic with the Gaang as family! Summary is: “Some people are born with soulmarks. Zuko has them, but his grandfather burned them off because they ‘make you weak.’ Team Avatar has a few things to say about that.” No spoilers, but I love a good soulmate fic and I’ve never seen a concept quite like this one!! I think I’ve read this two or three times at this point. Amazing.
Unwanted Friends by FoiblePNoteworthy
This was inspired by The Family You Choose by TunaFishChris (see previous), and I love it so much. It’s the same concept, but minus Suki and told from the other’s perspective at an earlier place in the timeline! If y’all end up liking The Family You Choose, you’ll like this one too!!
Perfection is Overrated by Jagged Cliffs
Post-show fic. If you’re like me and have a soft spot for fics where Fire Lord Zuko is an absolute sweetheart to the palace staff, then you have to read this. One of my all time favorite fanfics. Everything about this story makes me happy.
Another Brother by AvocadoLove
Show rewrite. This is a WIP, I’m actually still reading it rn but it’s really good!! It’s about if Hakoda found Zuko as an 8 year old injured on a Fire Nation ship and brought him home to the Water Tribe. No spoilers here, but it’s a really good pure story and I love it so much so far.
Salvage by MuffinLance
Show AU WIP. Ooo goodness I love this story! Summary is: “Mid-Season-One Zuko is held ransom by Chief Hakoda. Ozai's replies to the Water Tribe's demands are A+ Parenting. Hakoda is… deeply concerned, for this son that isn't his, and who might be safer among enemies than with his own father.” Zuko is an angsts bby whomst I adore, Hakoda is my favorite ever, and the OC’s are legit the best. MuffinLance is another author where every fic is amazing! This fic in particular tore me to shreds and then makes up for it in absolute amazingness.
OUTLINE: Amnesia!Zuko Joins the Earth Army by MuffinLance
Show rewrite, I can’t remember from what point exactly, but it’s before Ba Sing Se. Summary is: “Zuko loses his memory and becomes an Earth Kingdom war hero. His father is going to LOVE this.” Written in outline/concept form, I adore this so so much. This fic is why I post concepts of stories I’ll never write, cause this story made me realize people enjoy reading them!! And this is sooo enjoyable, I fuckin love this fic.
ZUKKA FICS:
The Good Vanilla by Haicrescendo
Show AU-ish from the Western Air Temple I think. I think this is the fic that made me fall in love with Zukka actually omg. A beautiful fanfic that shows how Zuko and Sokka slowly fall in love, no spoilers here, there is lots of cooking.
Quit your life and come train Pokemon. (orphaned)
Modern Day AU. Another one of my starter Zukka fics!! Sokka kinda maybe falls in love with Aang’s roommate Zuko. There is nerdiness and awkward situations and ~emotions~. It makes me happy, definitely one of my favs.
by the stars above, i knew we were in love by theycallmesuperboy
Post-show fic. This one tore me to shreds!! It’s a fic about Zuko working his way up to proposing to Sokka. No spoilers, just saying that this story hurt me in all the best ways. Amazing story.
Unchained Melody by AvocadoLove
Show rewrite from Hei Bai’s Forest episode, WIP. Basic premise is that Sokka turns into a ghost, and Zuko is the only one who can see him. The dynamic between Zuko and Sokka is just explored so well here, and the banter is perfection. There are so many things I could say about different parts of the story, but I don’t wanna spoil a thing, so go read it!! Love this fic.
Sea Cranes by Druddigonite
Show AU. Summary is: “Between chasing the Avatar and dealing with his disgrace, Zuko begins to cough up flowers.” It’s a really interesting concept which I’d never heard of before, but I loved this fic! Just enough angst to tear my heart up and then mend it back together.
Hotman by callmecaramleh
Set during the Western Air Temple Arc. Summary is: “Toph decides she needs to know who in the gaang is hot. This leads to quite a bit of trouble for Sokka.” I love this fic so much. It’s so clear that they’re awkward teenagers here, and as an awkward teenager I love the dynamic!!! I just adore these boys so much.
Something Good Can Work by beersforqueers
Bookstore AU!!! I live for a good bookstore AU, as well as library and café AUs. Anyway, summary is: “Bookstore AU! In which Sokka tries to not-so-subtly pick up the cute boy working in the bookstore, and the cute boy is totally oblivious. Because the cute boy is Zuko.” They’re adorable and flustered. It’s precious, another fic that brings me outta a bad mood in like a minute flat. I love this!

Women in SPN—Is it Really That Bad?
TL;DR: Somewhat, yeah, it kinda is.
This is going to be a series of long ones, people.
Before I jump head first into this giant vat of weird toxic shit, let me say something:
The thing about most of the female characters is that on their own? They’re perfectly fine, ranging from serviceable to the occasional flash of thematic brilliance. Barely any of them qualify as “this is hateful on its face and incompetent regardless of context and the writers should feel bad for ever conceiving of it”, i.e. the normie benchmark for justified criticism. It’s only when you put these characters next to each other that a worrying pattern emerges;
Although discussions about sexism in the media were very much a thing in the mid-2000s, as well as shows with characters whose primary role wasn’t to serve a man’s needs, I can’t honestly claim that the flaws of SPN are out of the norm for its time; and
The first few seasons could really do with a PSA at the start of each episode, something along the lines of “A part of the reason why female characters are killed off or written out with such regularity is rabid superfans who couldn’t abide anything with tits brushing against J2, srsly, the writing team and the 2000s’ fan base were a match made in hell, except it wasn’t the writers who couldn’t do with bitching on their LiveJournals about the gall of women to exist in the show, choosing instead to harass the creators and actresses and wives and call them every sexist insult under the sun AND I MEAN WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE HAS THERE EVER BEEN A CESSPIT AS DISGUSTING AND NUKEWORTHY AS THE SPN FANDO—“
Tumblr media
Anyway.
SPN has a legacy (as a posterchild for not knowing when to bow out gracefully, but legacy nonetheless) and isn’t watched in 2005 but in the year of our Lord Today. Meaning that as time goes by, the issues surrounding the show’s production retreat into the background and only what’s on the screen remains, to be judged on its own merits.
So let’s run down a list of the more noteworthy and relevant female characters of the first arc, focusing on their characterization, role in the narrative, and end. In the conclusion to this series of posts, the sum of characters will be analyzed as a whole to see if there are any unique tendencies in the show’s handling of women as opposed to that of men. I’ll do this for the original five seasons as the recent finale went out of its way to say that nothing after season 5 was strictly speaking necessary so why bother.
(Also because I died of frustration in season 8 and vowed not to subject myself to any more of the post-apocalypse fanfic era)
Angels, while strictly speaking genderless clouds of energy, will be classified as men or women depending on the apparent gender of the vessel they spend most of the time riding. The same goes for demons where I also take into account their stated gender while they were alive. That’s because although beings like Meg, Ruby, Anna, or Lilith can’t technically be considered women in the show’s present day, their consistent preference for conventionally attractive and/or female vessels throughout the original arc makes claims of genderlessness essentially meaningless. For all intents and purposes, we’re watching girls and women on screen.
Tumblr media
Baby—the only true NB of the first run
All right, time to jump.
Tumblr media
Say hi to our ladies!
Mary Winchester
Tumblr media
Killed in the very first scene to give the story a reason to exist, she remains an active presence throughout the first arc where she has a wide-reaching influence on the plot and characters, driving the conflict on several levels. Fleshed-out more and more with each appearance to be more than just “the dead mom”, she’s portrayed as protective, pro-active, capable, and assertive, mirroring the duo’s desire for normal life and their inability to have it. Her story comes full-circle in season 5 when the personal tragedy of her fate is embedded in the wider tragedy of the Winchester family curse and the overall theme of destiny.
Status: Dead as of s5
Importance: Major
On her own: Textbook example of fridging… and that tropes aren’t bad in and of themselves.
Jessica Moore
Tumblr media
Comparatively, if anyone doubts fridging can evolve into something meaningful, Jess drives the point home by having no personality and no point but to prop up her boyfriend before she ends up pinned to the ceiling, the reveal of which is the most interesting thing about her entire existence. At best she’s a symbol of Sam’s civilian life, at worst an obstacle to be removed for the story to happen.
Status: Dead as of s5
Importance: Major in terms of manpain, non-existent otherwise
On her own: A cardboard cut-out, barely qualifies as a character
Missouri Moseley
Tumblr media
A psychic and the primary reason why John Winchester even knows to wipe his ass. Appears once over the course of the first arc yet everyone wants her to come back years later—that’s how awesome she is. Has this fantastic trait of being compassionate and empathetic while not taking a single speck of shit from anyone, especially when it comes from the two main dumbos who might just as well have been raised in a barn. Is very particular about the pristine state of her coffee table.
Status: Alive as of s5, killed in s13 (wait, what?)
Importance: Major…ly wasted potential
On her own: As strong a character as Bobby Singer, and as worthy of being elevated to the main cast.
Lori Sorensen
Tumblr media
The writers can’t figure out why anyone in the universe would care about Jess either so they insert an intentionally awkward romance subplot to convince people the time’s not yet ripe for Sam to stop grieving and start slaying. The result’s… erm… well, awkward. Lori’s naïve, sheltered, devout though accepting of her non-repressed friend, and sort of on a religious crossroads because of her hypocritical preacher father. I guess the virginal power of her virginal virginity does… something in the plot? Primarily a vehicle for Sam to mark the stages of his moving on.
Status: Alive as of s5
Importance: Minor
On her own: A bit done. Like a bit lot. Like a “could be a trope namer” bit lot.
Meg
Tumblr media
Boom, baby!
Arguably the chief antagonist of season 1 and one of the best things about it. The first one to point out the pervasive toxicity of the Winchester family business, so props for perceptiveness. Possesses the standard qualities of a lower-level henchman—manipulative, no-nonsense, and quietly sinister which, while not exactly groundbreaking, sets her apart from the other bad guys in the season as they tend to have no distinguishing characteristics at all. Plus Nicki Aycox makes the role seem more unique and “lived-in” by projecting a sense of understated amusement at the two main chucklefucks. Is one of S1’s turning points in blurring the lines between monsters and humanity. Has a face transplant twice—once to have revenge (good on her) and the other time to pursue someone else’s goals again before getting stomped into the ground like a mook.
Status: Alive as of s5 (?), killed in s8
Importance: Major
On her own: The actresses do most of the heavy lifting. Which doesn’t mean I don’t love watching the character burst onto the scene and announcing the end of the Winchester brand of bullshit.
Layla Rourke
Tumblr media
A terminal cancer patient in a religious cult, she’s a more mature take on a Lori-type character and the themes of faith and doubt. Serves as a conduit for Dean’s budding survivor guilt, self-loathing, and sense of worthlessness. Is kind and cheerful, with strong hints that she’s relying on forced optimism to get through the days; also understanding of the circumstances of others while realistically freaked about the possibility of death. Weirdly, she enters the episode already in a state of acceptance and leaves it just as accepting when it’s confirmed that yeah, she’ll die soon. All expressions of anger at the injustice and senselessness are left to her mother which somewhat undermines the “struggling” portion of Layla’s character and renders the final scene where she makes peace with her fate a bit hollow.
Status: Implied dead
Importance: Minor in the overall narrative, major in the episode and Dean’s development
On her own: I want to like her, I really do, just… if only she were allowed to get pissed, once.
Cassie Robinson
Tumblr media
Dean’s ex and that’s pretty much all there is to her. I struggle to pinpoint a single personality trait of hers—the 2000s idea of a “strong woman” and “not like other girls”, perhaps? Undermined as a love interest because TPTB don’t show the happy or any parts of her relationship with Dean so really, why should anyone care if two sniping assholes with little to no chemistry get back together? Memorable for being in a horribly scored softcore scene which YouTube tries to convince me lasts for shy over a minute, not the week I remember it to. Involved in the show’s first and last attempt at incorporating the issue of anti-black racism.
Status: Alive as of s5
Importance: Minor
On her own: She’s in the racist truck episode. ‘Nuff said.
Sarah Blake
Tumblr media
A sophisticated people-person conversationalist with a love of high art and a deep sense of introspection. Ascends to the state of godhood by being able to pull off pigtails while adult. Bonds with Sam over responding to loss by crawling into a shell but deciding to move on. Doesn’t care for your fancy schmancy fine dining, Romeo. Isn’t ashamed to openly talk feelings which includes her explicitly asking Sam if they have a thing going on (honestly, this is such a breath of fresh air for a normcore romance). Despite being scared out of her wits, she refuses to be shoved into the helpless civilian box after learning about the existence of the supernatural; Dean creates a Pinterest wedding board in response.
Status: Alive as of s5, pointlessly dragged back to be murdered in s8
Importance: Minor in the overall narrative, major in the episode and Sam’s development
On her own: A great love interest that has enough writing behind her to fool you into thinking she’s something more.
Up next, whenever I feel like it, seasons 2 and 3!

Your thoughts on Isaac, William, Frankie an Jack 🎤?
OHHHHHH CROW I COULD GO ON ABOUT THEM FOR HOURS.
this post is SUPER FUCKING LONG so for the first time in my life im using a read more link.
I'm gonna start out with Will, who, a little fun fact, isn't actually named William! His full name is Willis Grossman. His parents thought it'd be funny. Will doesn't know his full name.
Here are some other fun facts about me and @functionentropy 's Will (along with other characters below) (he is also the one who has been making this entire creepypasta interp with me! Go check out their art or else /lh):
Will was born in the late 1800s early 1900s!
His parents were a lot like a Bonnie and Clyde duo, and they cared and loved for Will very, very much.
Will always looked up to Isaac! He wanted to be exactly like his grandpa when he grew up. Isaac was also a wonderful grandfather as well.
Will, on his 13th birthday, got Isaac's mask as a gift. When he got it, Isaac said to him: "keep it safe. It's a family heirloom.", Will uses that excuse as to why he still wears it to this day.
Speaking of Isaac, he's the underrealm equivalent to a tumblr sexyman. Everyone thinks he's hot shit, but that also goes for a lot of serial killers residing in the underrealm. Will unfortunately had to see his grandfather on magazine covers talking about the underrealm's HOTTEST NEW KILLER. He hates it.
Will ran away from home after Isaac died at around the age of 20 to 21, and considering he was a legal adult, his parents couldn't do much. They're still looking for him. (How, you may ask? Well, a little thing about the underrealm is that it stunts growth. You're essentially unable to die of old age down there. Think shitty immortality. His parents are looking for him, and they know he's in the underrealm- so that's how they are still around!)
Will had the worst time in the underrealm for the first few years he was down there. He wasn't immediately enrolled in the institution and he had a hard time holding down a job. Eventually he met Frankie! They live(d) in an apartment together. The first time Frankie met Will he thought he was Isaac and told his landlord and him HELL NO. Frankie does not like Isaac. Cue [will's offended gasp] and him saying he's his GRANDSON, and WHY IS HE ACTING LIKE ISAAC SUCKED? Cue Frankie making fun of him for being a grandpa's boy.
Frankie and Will had a bumpy relationship for a while. Will wasn't always a good person. Not really bad, just a fucking dumbass.
Speaking of Frankie...
Here's stuff about Frankie!
Frankie's origin story is essentially the same in this interp. Except for the fact that Frankie very much HAD A PAST. (which. If u wanna know more........I would love to talk about it......but this is about CURRENT Frankie so if u wanna know more bro just pop up in my dms or send another ask im feeling wild tonight)
After Amy passed (which was NOT due in part to the operator in this universe. The operator just found her like that) he was found by Bell (prince beelzebub, ruler of the underrealm at that point). You should know Frankie wasn't always an adjusted and normal fuckin person. He was like a rabid dog for a good while there.
While Frankie was unhinged he fucking death rolled Daisy the first time they met. (Daisy is an oc! I'm willing to talk more about him if you want the deets. He's interesting :]) because of this Daisy is the only one allowed to openly make fun of Frankie. (Playfully, of course.)
Daisy and Bell both basically helped Frankie adjust to society.
Frankie is autistic! So is Will. And Isaac. All. Everyone. Everyone has autism. (Shhhh. i'm projecting.)
Frankie can see souls! He's a very good judge of character because of it. However Frankie doesn't know what he's seeing is people's souls.
Frankie goes specifically after bad people. He'll take jobs from bad people, but he'll kill them, too. He says "he's sending them back to where they belong".
Frankie was the first to really show Will killing isn't just something you do. It's more than that. Will had never really processed death and murder of his fellow man like that before. He has a hard time even processing people as people sometimes, outside those of whom he cares for. This is because of Isaac. Isaac taught Will that people are bad- all of them. And that killing them is preventing them from hurting others, even if they haven't yet.
Frankie is a good guy and honestly a softie deep down. He worries and cares for all those who are close to him, even if he doesn't act like it sometimes.
Frankie says Toby "kidnapped him" and "made him diseased". 1. Frankie can very much leave the household at any time and 2. Frankie is referring to the operator sickness. Speaking of that-
Frankie was dragged through the operator's own personal hell! (Aka the realm they reside in more often than not, aka the place that Tim gets tossed around in near the end of marble hornets.) Reason being was because he threatened Toby's life. The operator is very protective of Toby.
Speaking of that, someone else was around when Toby met Frankie...
ONTO LAUGHING JACK!
ohhh man. Oh man. Oh baby. This clown is FULL of illness. Alright. So let's start off simple:
Lj was of course, made for Isaac. That's still a consistency. What isn't is that lj was around Isaac for a lot longer than in the original story. They developed a very close bond over the years they knew eachother, but, all good things must come to an end.
Lj returned to his box when Isaac left for boarding school. However, unlike the original story....Isaac didn't really come back to open the box. In fact, the most Isaac did was...well, I'll wait to spill that for Isaac's part later.
However! Eventually the house got passed off to another family. Years, and it mean YEARS later someone found lj's box in the attic! They were an unfortunate casualty.
After this, lj went and hunted Isaac down. Cue gore filled murder scene.
Things to note: LJ feels HORRIBLE about what he did to Isaac. He regrets it everyday. He wishes he had never done that to him.
But, time skip a bit.. we're further in the future now. LJ has his carnival set up and hidden away in an empty spot in the forest. He eventually comes across a wandering spirit because of this. This wanderer just so happens to be Sally!
LJ takes her in and swears to protect her with his life. In a way, you could say he sees her as a chance of redemption.
Sally was a wandering spirit, meaning she never really was stuck to one spot in particular- also meaning she wasn't very strong. Because of this, LJ gave her some of his own angelic essence. This boosted Sally and essentially made her a poltergeist!
(Note: Sally doesn't know how she died. Also, none of the things in her og story happened to her in this one. Fuck mishimishi. All my homies hate mishimishi.)
A little while after this they actually meet Toby and Jeffery! But this is getting long and to explain THAT entire debacle would make it even longer. but again I fully invite you to send more asks or just straight up dm me if you wanna know!
Now, last, but certainly not least..
ISAAC GROSSMAN.
OH MAN. Isaac is a DOOZY. Just like LJ, this baby is chocked FULL of illnesses! *slaps the top of his head like the roof of a car* but also, fair warning here: im gonna be talking about some heavy stuff. Abuse, physical and mental, gore, just. Death in general. Cannibalism, and EXTREME MENTAL ILLNESS *loud airhorn* so if any of that stuff gets to you steer clear of this part!
Anyways, let's start out simple!
Isaac was born in victorian England.
Isaac's mother was terrible towards him. I'm talking mental and physical abuse. She was a horrible, horrible woman.
Isaac's father...he wasn't a good person either, but he didn't beat Isaac. Nor did he really mentally abuse him either. He just...let it happen. He didn't even hurt his mother like he did in the original story. Isaac's mother was just plain bad for no good reason.
Isaac was sort of. Born having mental illness. They didn't just develop for him due to the abuse he experienced, though they certainly DID make it worse. There were other mental issues he has now that developed due to the abuse, however.
LJ was quite literally a godsend for Isaac. Metaphorically and not Metaphorically. LJ made Isaac happy, gave him comfort, and was basically like the mom he never had.
that's why it was so hard on Isaac when he had to leave lj behind. For a while he even had hallucinations of lj while in boarding school (which only furthered his future belief that lj was a hallucination brought on by the need to cope).
Isaac's first technical "murder" you could say was at boarding school. He pushed a shitty teacher down the stairs when there was no one around and they died. It wasn't even premeditated- more like it just sort of..happened.
Eventually Isaac graduated. When he did, he promptly returned home and killed his parents, as you do. /s
Isaac killed his mom in a rather violent fashion in comparison to his father- he whiplashed her so hard she fucking died.
Not long after this Isaac started his..well. I guess you could call it career.
Basically you know what happens after that. human skin chair, yadda yadda yadda, underrealm's sexiest killer, you know the drill.
Isaac did more than the human skin chair though! In fact, he uh. He. He did a lot. He did. SO much. But that was because Isaac believed in not wasting any part of the body. Which means Isaac not only made human skin chairs, but he was an avid cannibal, as well. (Fun fact, this very much extended to Will's father, mother, and Will as well. Will didn't know they were eating human for a long time. He had to realize that on his own.)
Eventually, Isaac punched his ticket because of LJ. But..I'd be a liar to say he really died.
No, our wonderful boy Isaac didn't die. He became a ghoul. Which, by the way, only further fucked with Isaac mentally! He's so ill. Some other things happened which I won't say here because they're spoilers for the fanfic I'm working on (Oh yeah the hyperfixation is that bad, but if you wanna know, again, I fully invite you to ask), but basically Isaac eventually gets taxidermied by, drumroll please..TOBY!!!! yeah. Toby does taxidermy as a job. He invited a new type of it for taxidermying Isaac. It was to repay daisy for something he did for the group.
But to say, again, that THAT was Isaac's end, would be another lie! No no no. Isaac was alive during the entire process! The good news is that he's never looked better after he escaped daisy's house when it got exploded by Frankie. Which..that's uh..another story for another day. This post is already insanely long and I am NOT putting it in the main tags.
So yeah! Im absolutely crazy for these dudes and I love all of them. By the way if you couldn't guess before Frankie and Will very much get together and are so so gay. Another little thing: Isaac is gay too, he had a past relationship with a man by the name of Dr. Locklear! Locklear is French German and his accent shows it. They were very close but fell out because of Locklear being involved with the institution and...a certain foundation.
I'll leave it to you to ponder on that one.

so. it’s finally time to talk about [my] nano.
i’ve kept my nano project pretty under wraps so far, mostly because it’s been out of my hands. i wasn’t actually planning on doing a for real for real nano; instead, i thought i would dedicate some time to my fanfic (spoiler alert, but i haven’t yet) or work on finishing up revising fairbone (spoiler alert: i did revise one chapter, but i still have like half of it left to go and a nov 30 deadline...rip). if that didn’t work, i thought i would pick a wip i started over the summer or one i had half developed (let’s just say the ideas note i have really boomed over the summer and like...yeah). in conclusion, there were many wips ready for me to work on them, including ash heart, which i really want to write but haven’t figured out how to.
instead i started a new wip.
well, it’s not necessarily new, persay. it’s an idea i’ve had stewing since like late september/early october and planned out a good portion of. however, deciding to start it was a last minute decision - and by last decision, i mean that on october 31st i finished developing the barebones of character development and basic plot lol and then gave it a go. it’s honestly been going crazy well. as of today (november 9th), i just hit 21.2k words. i’m hopeful about this year, while also not wanting to jinx stuff, but like...wow. but writing is has made me realize that, wow, this book is going to be crazy long probably...like i’m 21k words in and we’re still like in the exposition idk what’s going on. but hey, i finished planning out the rest of the basic plot for it today!!!
right. onto the wip details.
honestly, the only reason i haven’t introduced this wip is because a) i want actual stuff done on it and like a proven commitment, because i feel like too often i introduce wips i don’t actually go anywhere with and i hate it, b) i don’t have a set title and c) i actually have no idea how to summarize this.
the novel i’m working on right now is the first of a projected trilogy. i say projected because i have a vague idea that it belongs to a trilogy, but like not a lot of plot except some vaguely connected ideas that should happen in the future. in it, i used a lot of characters from these violent ends, which i tried to write for camp april 2020, but like just their basic barebones; i changed a lot to fit the story, of course.
not to sound nerdy, but it is like....harry potter inspired, but ONLY in the magical boarding school sense. of course, right now all i have is magical boarding school shenanigans, which i don’t really like because i feel like it unfairly sets the book up as like fun magical stuff when it’s really about murder & politics & student activism (+ a lot of other things ending in -ism). the whole activism part came from watching the trial of the chicago 7 and i was like, bingo, this is what this story needs.
kay but ANYWAYS. onto the story. like i said, i can’t really summarize it, but there are lots of themes of classism, feminism, the affect on youth and youth’s effect, manipulative adults, revolution, terrorism, sibling dynamics and found family vibes, like all that stuff...packaged into a magical boarding school off the coast of maine setting...recipe for disaster!
mainly i’ve been writing in ophelia’s pov, because she’s my main girl and she’s problematic, but also she’s trying her best and just having a little difficulty fitting in. some other main characters are her twin brother, sebastian, and two other boys, asriel and vincent, who have an initially animistic relationship with ophelia (& kind of each other?) but it’s like enemies to friends (to lovers?).
anyways. here are some carefully curated excerpts below the cut:
i. vincent and asriel meet on a train (ch. 1)
The boy pursed his lips together. “It’s unusual,” he said, finally. “That’s all.” But he was looking at Vincent as if he was noticing him, which meant he was lying, or at least withholding the truth about something. He added, “You’re not from around here, are you?”
“Do you mean geographically?” Vincent replied, raising an eyebrow. “Because I’m from New York.”
A small glimmer of a smile appeared on the boy’s lips, though it vanished as quickly as it had come. “From the Magical World,” he clarified.
“What gives it away?” Vincent asked sarcastically, waving a hand across his body. “My impeccable taste?”
“Among other things,” the boy said.
ii. sebastian and ophelia discuss grief on a ferry (ch.2 )
“You and mom talked?” Ophelia asked, surprised. She hadn’t exactly been keeping track of them, but she was sure she and Sebastian had spent much of the day together, as they were wont to do.
Sebastian looked at the floor. “Yeah,” he answered, hoarsely. “At least she wants to talk about Des. Dad doesn’t, and neither do you.”
Ophelia sighed, wondering why, today of all days, her sister was haunting them. Maybe it was because there should have been three people heading to Rijevduct, instead of two. Maybe Mother Magic was reminded of the loss of one of her own.
“I’ve let her go,” she said. “You should too. We have too much of our lives ahead of us to mourn Desdemona forever.”
“I don’t mourn,” Sebastian said, words uncharacteristically sharp. “But I do grieve.”
“Isn’t that basically the same thing,” Ophelia mumbled, closing her eyes and feeling the press of a headache behind them.
“Sorrow,” Sebastian said, the word a soft shudder. “And sad endings.”
“What?”
“That’s what makes a good tragedy,” Sebastian answered. “I read it in a book.”
iii. headmistress alexeyev gives a speech (ch. 2)
“Eight years ago, seventy two students were slaughtered here. Some died on the very spot where you now stand today.” Ophelia glanced down at the floor, seeing the motion repeated instinctively around her as well. She looked over at Sebastian, who had closed his eyes instead, a pale flush meeting the faint color in his cheeks. His throat bobbed as he swallowed, tennis shoes scraping against stone as he toed them against the floor, as if he was shaking something only visible to him off.
“It was a tragedy,” Headmistress Alexeyev continued. “I say this because it is the truth. It was a tragedy, and not one that should never have happened.” She inhaled; Ophelia saw her chest rise, shoulders with it, in a sharp motion before she exhaled, body rearranging itself into poise once more. “I speak of this to tell you to assure you that Rijevduct is safe. I know there have been continuous doubts over the security of this school since that day eight years ago. I cannot, of course, guarantee that you will not come to any harm here. I cannot tell you that Rijevduct is the safe haven you were taught it was growing up; events have already proved that it is, in fact, not as impenetrable as one might think.”
Ophelia frowned, confused as to the line of reasoning. She had thought the whole point of the year of transition was to make sure that Rijevduct was infinitely more safer than it had been—and they had all been under the assumption that Rijevduct was virtually impenetrable until the massacre, which had led to the heightened security measures they saw today.
“I can, however, promise you that I, and everyone here today, will do anything in their power to keep you safe,” the Headmistress said. Next to Ophelia, Briar bowed her head, lowering her eyes and swallowing, the action almost a convulsion of her throat and mouth. Ophelia brushed her hand, lightly, in question, and the other girl just shook her head, looking away purposefully, so that Ophelia lost sight of her face and her sad eyes.
“These next three years will be far from easy. Gone are the sheltered lives where your parents could kiss your injuries goodbye, or sing you to sleep at night. Rijevduct is far from the cold, real world, but it is close enough when it comes to not asking you what you want first. This is an adjustment period. This is learning how to survive—and I will tell you this; surviving means many different things to many different people. You will have to decide on your own what this will mean for you, and how you will apply what you are taught here to your futures. Be wise. Be proud. Be humble. Cry. Laugh. Live. As your Headmistress, I, along with your professors, will be here throughout your time.” She raised her glass, “To the worthy,” and then drank, turning and walking back to her seat, which she lowered herself into gracefully.
iv. sebastian pov! (ch. 3)
There was a dead girl in Sebastian’s first period Magical Theory class. She was sitting diagonal from him, on the Glass side of the classroom, in an empty chair, staring straight ahead at the chalkboard. Sebastian tried not to look at her too obviously, his eyes straying from the open book in front of him to her cautiously, beneath the sleeve of his sweater.
She was sitting blankly in the chair, scraping her shoes against the ground, though they could not leave any scuff marks. Though she was the same faded shades most girls were, Sebastian could make out her pleated pale blue plaid skirt, which brushed around her knees, and the stained white blouse that might have once been spotless, but had been marred forever by the circumstances surrounding her death—objectively, that was to say, with blood. Her dark brown hair fell into loose curls around her shoulders, little silver studs glinting dimly, unable to catch the light. Her knee high socks now pooled around her calves and ankles, revealing a rotting bandaid on one of her knees. One of her tennis shoes was peeling at the toes, looking as if it had been ripped apart.
Her fingernails had all been pulled off. Sebastian was good at analyzing ghosts by this point; he recognized the bloody flesh and bone of the nail bed. There was also blood matted across her head, trickling down her temple, with bruises covering her body; they peeked out from beneath the collar of her shirt, blackened across her cheekbones with a sunken quality in particular to one of her cheeks, as if the bone had begun to cave.
Subjectively, she was far from one of the worst that Sebastian had seen.

Note
So,about Miller's clone wars books, you mentioned you might have some thoughts on it and i would like to hear them, if you're up to? I read some time ago and don't really remember if had any jedi bashing or not, i just recall having fun while reading.
I wouldn’t say that the books are Jedi-bashing, just that they get the Jedi wrong. There’s a lot of conflation of love and attachment, and the typical “Jedi can’t show emotions” thing going on. It’s just done for whump instead of bashing.
Actually, yeah, I think that’s my main issue with these books. Not really how it portrays the Jedi, but rather that stuff is done for the sake of whump regardless of whether it actually…fits. Which would be fine if this was a fanfiction tagged as whump, but this is official material associated with the TCW TV show. The EU may not have been strictly “canon”, but it was at least intended as the equivalent of fanfiction with a big flashing neon “canon-compliant” tag. And I feel that these books fall very flat in that regard.
And yeah, I guess I’m not really the biggest fan of whump in general. I like angst fine but…I get burned out on this particular brand of it, because it usually just doesn’t feel earned or built up enough for me. I’m not sure if I can exactly put my finger on it but there’s a way that the prequels and TCW justify their tragedy to me that these books just don’t capture. It’s a really careful thing, to handle angst properly, and if you go too far then it gets really tiring.
But that’s obviously a personal preference thing. For those who like whump more than I do, I’m sure these books are a lot more appealing - so don’t let me put you off of them if you enjoy them. These books just didn’t resonate with me for a lot of reasons…
(rambling more specifically about what I liked and didn’t like under the cut)
I think the books (which again, I haven’t read Siege - only Wild Space and Stealth) do have their strengths. I think Miller is really good at writing playful banter - those character interactions are absolutely on point. I couldn’t stop laughing when in Stealth, Obi-Wan pretended he had no idea where Anakin could’ve possibly learned how to be so sarcastic.
But uh…most anything outside of playful banter? Not so much a fan of those interactions. The way it’s written…it’s like they have only two levels of interaction, and the instant there’s any tension between characters, they invariably take that tension to 11, with no stops in between. It makes everyone come off as really bitchy, because they’re the same level of upset regardless of how minor or serious the trigger. I don’t mind characters arguing but this constant level of it wears on my nerves. Everyone’s written as though they’re 30 seconds from having a breakdown, and I’m sorry, but I just can’t see how these people are supposed to survive three more years of war if they’re already so close to their breaking points.
Especially Obi-Wan. I’m sorry but this is the worst offender in regards to doing things for whump rather than fitting with the character”. The characterization of Obi-Wan is just…really, really fanficy. And I don’t mean to malign fanfic, because I do love transformative works…but characterization is often a mixed bag, and, as in these books, a weird mix of highly on-point moments which exactly hit what you’d think the character would do/say/think, and moments that are the complete antithesis of that, and moments that are just really, really off without being able to exactly pin down why. And I get that a lot of this is subjective, and a lot of people can and do fit this with their interpretation of the character, but I just can’t. I can’t see Obi-Wan being as dysfunctional as he’s portrayed here and making it through the genocide of his people and Anakin’s betrayal and then living 20 years alone in exile. That’s not the kind of thing you get through if you already hate yourself for years before that.
I don’t know…it’s almost like Miller felt like Obi-Wan had to be this dysfunctional, that he needed to be equally as unstable as Anakin, just in a different way…and I just don’t see that from the films or TCW. I know a lot of people really like this interpretation. I don’t. It’s not that I think Obi-Wan is perfect, because he’s absolutely not. He’s fallible as anyone else would be. But the idea that characters need to be dysfunctional in order to be fallible or interesting doesn’t sit well with me.
Maybe I’m reading it wrong, and this is all supposed to be a temporary thing Obi-Wan is struggling with. I don’t remember it being quite as bad in Wild Space, after all, so maybe his characterization in Stealth is all supposed to be an after effect of Zigoola, and he’ll make peace with all of that by the end of Siege, presumably after his terminally ill friend/love-interest inevitably dies tragically in his arms? Somehow it doesn’t seem likely to me that that would make his self-recrimination/self-loathing/refusal-to-take-care-of-himself/etc any better, but I could be wrong. If anyone knows if Siege addresses my issues with Stealth then I’d probably be much more encouraged to read it.
The part that really soured my opinion, though, was when we got to the scientist, and how all that was handled. I get it, Miller was trying to present a situation of “someone’s in trouble, Anakin wants to help, Obi-Wan also wants to help but knows that they must stay focused on their mission, they both have good points”...except that the scientist was at the center of their mission, she was being forced to make the bioweapon they were trying to stop, so Obi-Wan’s “oh no, just like Qui-Gon, Anakin’s picking up strays that we can’t afford to be distracted by” makes NO sense to me. In helping her they’re helping their mission. And the part where he's thinking about how they have to succeed in their mission at all costs, and even considers Shooting the Hostage himself is really...not Obi-Wan, to me? Yeah there are a lot of lives on the line, and maybe this was supposed to be him struggling with the Dark Side (it didn’t really come across as being written that way to me though, but I could at least accept that more), but the way it was all written didn’t really seem to justify itself, and doesn’t seem in character for Obi-Wan (I realize this book was written very early in TCW’s run, so the Citadel arc wasn’t out yet, but...in the Citadel arc Anakin is the one saying that the Jedi don’t go far enough to succeed in the war, and Obi-Wan gives him some raised eyebrows for that). And the way he gets hung up on the scientist having been coerced into making the bioweapon because she was unwilling to sacrifice her family is so odd to me, because 1) they have limited time, and it doesn’t make sense to spend that time dwelling on things that can’t be changed, and they need her cooperation so it’s better to be tactful than openly judgemental, and 2) Jedi don’t expect non-Jedi to follow their beliefs and make their sacrifices, which is how this whole thing comes across.
Anyway, I’m sure people can come up with justifications and explanations for why this all works but it doesn’t work for me and there wasn’t enough going for the story otherwise for me to try and make it work. YMMV.
Oh, and also with both Wild Space and Stealth, I really get the sense that Miller wanted Padmé, Bail, Obi-Wan, and Anakin to end up in a four-way but for obvious reasons wasn’t allowed to write them as such, so settled for making various insinuations whenever possible. It’s actually more amusing than annoying, but it certainly doesn’t help it feeling like a mislabeled fanfic.
Anyway, if you like these books that’s completely fine. But they’re not for me and I don’t agree with their take on Star Wars or its characters. I can go into more specifics if you want, but it was more about the general way it was written and the characters characterized than any specific passages or moments.

I don't think Sam ever actually "gave up hope" in the future timeline. He kept dragging Dean along with him, trying to keep fighting. But losing Eileen is what made Sam have a "death wish," according to Dean (or Chuck, maybe). I'm really not a die-hard Sam/Eileen person necessarily, I could take it or leave it. But your comments about them always seem like you're saying that they don't even really care about each other, and that's just... not true.
Okay this is gonna be a convoluted sentence, but I need everyone to follow along with this one: If anything I’m saying about Sam and Eileen’s relationship is being interpreted in such a way that the reader believes that I am implying that Sam and Eileen do not care about each other, that’s the reader’s inference, and not what I am actually saying.
It is obvious in s15, just as it was obvious in 11.11, 12.17, and 12.21 that Sam does care about Eileen. And that Eileen obviously likes Sam (and Dean, for that matter… her interactions with Dean are just about as cute, for anyone who hasn’t picked up on that… like in 12.17, more than half of her conversation ARE WITH DEAN, and Dean clearly cares about her, too. Even if it’s always been presented in a slightly different way, or possibly in a less… intense? way than her interactions with Sam.
That said… in the future timeline– that is, in CHUCK’S STORY HE WAS SHOWING TO SAM– Chuck’s STORY (which, remember, he planted Eileen in Sam’s life in 15.06 specifically to become Sam’s love interest, for the purposes of Chuck’s story) said that Sam’s had a death wish ever since Eileen died. Because that would line up with CHUCK’S STORY as it had been playing out all season that had made her into Sam’s love interest. That story also suggested that Dean… LOST THE WILL TO FIGHT after he had to lock Cas up in a Ma’lak box. Not that Dean had a death wish.
(I mean, we know this is accurate but this is how Dean personally reacts when he loses Cas. We know how he reacts when he loses anyone else– think about what he did when Charlie died. He went on a murder rampage against the Stynes for killing her. When Mary died he broke some furniture and went full bore toward both resurrecting her and stopping Jack. But without Cas, Dean loses the will to fight. Sam has… always been different. He referenced Jess in 15.04 to remind us of how he was after she died in the pilot episode. Just like John, he picked up the revenge mission and ran with it. But for Dean, Cas is different. Without Cas… Dean gives up.)
But if we are to believe this is a True Seeing of future events that WILL actually happen in reality, we have to disregard the fact that Chuck is a supremely unreliable narrator. And the guy is not a great liar. And it’s been lampshaded repeatedly this season that he’s not a particularly good storyteller either.
To Becky’s horror, all Chuck seems to care about are the monsters, and he gets angry and tries to argue when Becky tells him that NOBODY cares about the monsters. That we all care about the characters. And Chuck’s pretty much been trying to prove how great the monsters are ever since. Have you noticed that pretty much every episode this season so far has involved monsters? Ever since they got the hell rift sealed up, anyway. Ghosts and demons apparently aren’t good enough for Chuck, and from 15.04 on we’ve had vampires, werewolves, witches and djinn, a marid, werewolf, and now (FINALLY! Chuck is probably thinking) Leviathans, leviathan blossoms, a mention of Eve, and whatever that rando corpse was in Purgatory, aka Monster Heaven.
And yet, Chuck’s line is that without him in the universe, it would be Nothing But Monster Apocalypse, as if he was the one holding all that at bay. And just… dude, do you think we’re all “crazy and stupid” like you attempted to convince Dean that Sam was for telling him the truth about how you had manipulated their lives in 14.20? He pulled a similar string of lies with Amara (who saw through his lies), he pulled a similar string of lies with Becky (who still tried to be kind to him anyway, even after he treated her like a jerk). So I’m wondering how anyone trusts anything he says now, you know?
Chuck made the monsters. He LIKES the monsters. And it’s like he’s writing his ending out of spite over Becky’s critique of his “fic” in 15.04. Becky doesn’t like monsters? Doesn’t think the stakes were high enough? Well, he’ll show her! What does she know? She’s not a real writer anyway, right? Just a fanfic writer who wants them all to sit around an talk about their feelings. Ew, right?
>.>
So, yeah, this is how I approach anything that we’re told is part of “Chuck’s process,” or Chuck’s story. With the assumption that he’s lying. Because writers lie.
(This was also a staple of his character in s11. This is exactly how he wrote back then. Metatron called him out on it several times, but even then we know he was still trying to lie his way out of direct responsibility for anything. He blamed Dean for not having killed Amara (!!!????) as if that was something Dean was supposed to be able to do. He blamed Amara for “blocking him” when we’d seen her literally tearing through the world looking for him. Then after all that, he said they CAN’T kill Amara because it would create an imbalance in the universe and the universe would collapse. Pick a story and stick with it, Chuck. We also know when he writes himself into a corner, he invents something on the spot to fix it, such as Chekhov’s Equalizer Gun. Or going WAY back to 5.10 and the apocalypse that failed… The Colt, which was supposed to kill anything, failed to work on Lucifer, because it didn’t fit Chuck’s desired plot, all of a sudden there were five exceptions to the Colt’s powers. Shocker, that… >.>)
Rule of thumb: If Chuck is saying something, there’s a super good chance you should at least inspect it with a measure of doubt, run it through the BS filter for good measure, and then give it 24 hours or at least one (1) more installment of canon before you begin to trust it…
But back to your original question. If Sam and Eileen hadn’t at least LIKED each other, Sam would never have even CONSIDERED any sort of a relationship with Eileen, and Chuck’s plot would’ve been foiled a heck of a lot earlier. Chuck’s a bad writer, but he’s not THAT bad of a writer…
eta, because after posting I realized I never addressed the first part of your question: Sam gave up hope when he refused to cast the spell to lock Chuck up. That’s what Chuck is referring to. And it wasn’t anything to do with Eileen that made him “lose hope.” Which is Chuck’s phrase for what happened... maybe “lost the will to cast that spell in particular because of the risk of a specific set of consequences,” is more accurate. Because Sam remained defiant (or disbelieving of Chuck’s story) up until Chuck told him that their fate as cheesy vampires wasn’t the worst of it. The worst of it was that Sam and Dean would give up, and the world would be overrun and succumb to the monsters. That not just the Winchesters, but all of humanity, would lose. THAT is what Sam could not put at risk.
Okay, I just needed to get that in there :’D

Unit 5- Twins Are Very Stupid
If you haven’t taken the Exam 1 quiz for Fanfiction 101 go do that!! That quiz covers material from the first four units: Rules for the Universe, Formatting, Face Claims, and Names. Everything from this unit onward will be a part of Exam 2.
Much like cliches in regular fiction, there are a plethora of cliches that exist in fanfiction. Some are specific to certain genres, some are on a wider scale as a whole. For this unit we are going to dissect common themes and ideas first based in specific genres (re: fandoms) of fanfiction and then open the floor up to widespread cliches as a whole. We’ll start with Twilight.
In Twilight, the biggest cliche we see is Bella Swan having a sister who is, “not like her sibling at all!” This isn’t original. It isn’t creative, and 9/10 times the unique sibling is a lot like Bella Swan they just talk more than her. Regardless of your feelings towards Stephanie Meyers and her books, what this shows me is a writer who is uncertain of how to approach the quiet, observational, internalized thinking of Bella Swan as a character. It also shows me a writer who believes loud is the complete opposite of quiet and because someone shouts their opinions more boisterously than the next girl, that makes them unique. Neither statement is true. Imagine Bella Swan’s sibling really being the complete opposite of her. Like, imagine Bella’s little sister in Seattle doing coke off a stripper’s asshole. You can’t. So don’t say that she’s the opposite. She isn’t, and that’s ok. Siblings can have common interests and like the same thing, and your OC is not a bad one if they are similar to Bella Swan. A better contrast to Bella Swan would be an OC that’s athletic. Bella Swan from the get-go is described as someone who is not an athlete, doesn’t spend time in the sun, and likes to be by themselves. A sun-kissed volleyball-playing little sister would be more contrasting to Bella Swan than someone who is again, her but louder.
In BBC’s Sherlock the biggest cliche the Editor and I have seen is Sherlock having a twin sister who is also a detective. Now in Unit 3: Face Claims, we discussed that Sherlock’s sibling shouldn’t be the voice of reason or conscience while also doing the exact same thing as him. This still stands. If Sherlock has a twin, that twin shouldn’t be seen as “the good one” or “the nice one” when they shoot the same things, break into the same places, and act just as manic as he does. It isn’t consistent. The twin should not be a carbon clone that is smarter and prettier and gets along with everyone else. That’s not a character, that’s a Mary Sue that solves crimes. There are 10,000 jobs in the world, and the best way to break the monotony of Sherlock’s twin is to make her something that isn’t a detective. Make her her own person. For example, Sherlock could have:
A twin sister who works as a crime statistician for the government. She’s been given a cushy office she doesn’t deserve because of Mycroft and she tries to call her brothers once a week. They don’t necessarily answer. She needs to use criminal trends to track where Moriarty will be so Mycroft can have him arrested and interrogated.
A sister who went to school for law, and became a powerful and wealthy corporate attorney. Sherlock paid off everyone in a mile radius? She paid off everyone in a 5-mile radius. She makes sure his bills are paid, his fridge is stocked, and that he and John are happy without either of them knowing. She uses her knowledge of the law to find holes in Baskerville’s policies that would allow Sherlock and John to sneak in.
A twin sister who’s a mom of two and likes to paint. She teaches at the local college and babysits her neighbor’s kids when she’s out. Mycroft is the godfather of both of her kids, and she likes to crochet when she has the time (she never does). She needs to figure out why the painting is a fake and what book fits the cipher.
My point is that Sherlock can have a twin. I don’t care, and that doesn’t trigger me like it triggers the Editor (I think she just has something against twins). Sherlock’s twin should have a personality of their own. The cliche in this genre is Sherlock having a twin that’s essentially, “genius but better.” If you make her exactly like him you limit the potential to make a story that’s compelling. You also break the rules of the universe, as you’ll have to go back and rewrite all the episodes to include her. Don’t do that to yourself.
In Supernatural, The big cliche is the boys having a teenaged Winchester sibling and/or a guardian angel. Bonus points if Cas is the guardian angel. I’ve also seen a lot of ‘Sam Winchester’s Guardian Angel’ and if that’s you after all the things that character has gone through you need to be fired. These ones just don’t make sense. They break the rules of the universe and make the cast have to bend over backward just for the character to exist. The original work should not be broken to fit your narrative. You have to make your prompt work in their established universe. Unfortunately, teenaged Winchester siblings do not work. There is not enough of a time gap between what we know about the story and this prospect to fit a 16-year old child. The same stands for Dean Winchester’s child. It doesn’t fit, so don’t try and force it to fit. You can have a teenaged hunter be significant and interact with the Winchesters without them being blood. By forcing them to be blood you go against one of the main themes of the show: Family don’t end in blood. Stop making Bobby Singer’s child OCs, or Cas’s, or Sam’s, or another illegitimate John Winchester child because we already have one who spent god knows how many years in hell. Instead, John Winchester could have family he’s estranged from. An older sister or brother who left the Winchester house after they turned 18 and never looked back. You could create a new pair of hunters, an OC who runs the halfway house for Hunters. Garth stepped in as Bobby when he died. Who stepped in for Jo and Tess? There are more options and much more creative options than pigeonholing one specific cliche.
Moving on, in the same vein of not needing an OC to be bound to the cast by blood, Hermione/Harry/Ron’s twin sister is a huge cliche. Sometimes the Hermione twin sister is also, “not like her sister at all,” a phrase that usually means, “also brilliant, but more attractive and funnier.” The origin of these OCs, however, is minuscule to the fact that they always either end up dating Draco Malfoy or are in a love triangle and/or square, where all the boys in Harry Potter (Cedric Diggory, Fred Weasley, George Weasley, Dean Thomas, and Draco Malfoy) are in love with the OC. As a matter of fact can we just get rid of love triangles altogether? They’re exhausting and not realistic. They don’t add enough to the story to make it meaningful, and an OC should have a story that’s more compelling than “which boy am I going to end up with?” Also, usually, these stories tell you in the title. I’m talking about the [Fred x reader], [Draco Malfoy x Reader] titles, though the same is true for any writer who puts [Love Interest x OC] in their title. What is the point of a love triangle my guys? What are you doing? We already know before we even read the first chapter who the main character is going to end up with, so why bother wasting our time with a love triangle?
The other Harry Potter cliche, is the youngest Weasley sibling who is a girl. This is a huge no-no and should be stricken from the record entirely because, once again, it breaks the rules of the universe. We know from the Harry Potter books that Molly Weasley wanted and craved a daughter and kept having kids until she got one. This is why Ron is the least loved, as he was the last boy in the family before Ginny, as said by the Horcrux in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows “Least loved always, by the mother who craved a daughter. Least loved now by the girl who prefers your friend” (Rowling 375). What this means, is that if you make an OC who is the youngest Weasley sibling, and a girl, you completely go against the desires and intentions of Molly Weasley as well as devalue and undercut the importance of Ginny Weasley- her tokenism as the only girl is tied to the significance of being the first and last daughter Molly Weasley ever had. Without that, with another girl there is no need for Ginny Weasley, and as we’ve discussed numerous times here: Your OC should never replace a member of the cast. What is acceptable, however, is Ginny Weasley having a twin sister, or even being a triplet. If you are sold on a youngest-girl Weasley fanfic, make them a twin or triplet of Ginny. If you go above or below her you break the rules of the universe. They have to stay on her level. In addition, please see Unit 4: Nameberry.com to properly name your Weasley sister OCs, as they have to fit the style and vibe of being named after nobility. Moving on.
The next handful of cliches don’t apply to any particular genre. Every genre is equally guilty of having these cliches, and what we’re going to do is use some works for specific examples of these cliches, but know that they apply to everyone; not just the work we’re referencing.
If a character is marketed as a strong and capable badass who is independent and a boss and kicks ass and takes names, they should not turn into a wimp because their love interest wants to “protect” them. “Protection” as a whole is such a cliche. It’s in practically every story. If a character has been described as strong and has up until this point kicked a lot of ass, that character will not break down and destroy all the character development they just made for the sake of a love interest. A character who is described as strong will also not let their love interest try and stifle them like that. “Protection” is overused, and unless the character is going to crumble like a daisy at first blood or is living in a war zone, they can handle it themselves.
Again… We’ve all seen Pretty Little Liars. It’s almost funny how many cliches came from that show and book series. Let’s talk about evil twins. I don’t just mean evil in the Alison DiLaurentis way where she stole her sister’s identity and had her carted off to inpatient treatment, I also mean evil in that they are everything their cast member sibling is, but superior. This is evident in so many siblings and twin fics. The evil twin is usually better at everything than the cast twin, and systematically destroys the cast member’s life for fun. Now, I’m not saying this isn’t a valid plot point. What I am saying is you can’t make the evil twin better at everything than the cast member twin. That’s not realistic, and it negates the need for a struggle. A villain is not a more intimidating adversary because they’re better at everything than the hero. An evil twin is not scarier or more frightening as a villain because they can do 3 flips into a punch while the hero only can do 2. Also if the villain is so wonderful and so much better how is it realistic when the hero defeats them? It isn’t. “The same but better” shows me as a reader that the writer is uncomfortable with character creation, and making stakes that mean something or seeing their character struggle.  Not only will it make the OC more realistic, but it will make the story more fun to write.
A writer uncomfortable with the struggle is another cliche we see often. It takes the form of characters who are perfect, who hit every step just right and have the best comebacks all the time. We as people fail and fall down, and characters are meant to be a reflection of us that we can relate to. An audience won’t relate or root for a character that always accomplishes their goal. It actually makes the character boring because, we know they’re going to do what they set out to do so why bother reading? Characters are allowed to have flaws. Those flaws, and seeing consequences for those flaws are what make a character compelling, and for every positive attribute that a character has we should see 1-2 flaws that reflect that attribute. For example, in my own original work Trapped, the main character is an alien on a planet that is thousands of years ahead of Earth in technology, intellect, and scientific advancements. One of these characters is an upstart student training in one of the top labs to be a doctor. He has people working underneath him, and he’s clearly achieved. His work ethic is incredible and he is dedicated to his field. However, his dedication has cut him off from his family- their relationship is strained to the point where one of his siblings entered the same field just to catch a glimpse of him. He is afraid to be emotionally vulnerable because he has to have the answers to all these questions. He doesn’t know how to relax, because he’s always at work and this has cost him a life outside of the lab. He gets annoyed easily because he thinks fast enough to see the answer and becomes frustrated when he has to work with other people. We’re going to revisit this in the next unit, but a character without flaws is a boring character because the flaws are what allow us as readers to do our own analysis and find a deeper meaning in someone as a whole.
Our final cliche is the ire of the Editor’s existence. It is twins who are separated at birth or end up in foster care that magically find each other at the start of the story. I also kind of hate this cliche, because again, we’ve all seen The Fosters or is it Switched At Birth? I don’t know, and I don’t really care. If you have a character who is taken from their actual family, you need to double-down and commit to the issues that OC would have. That character wouldn’t show up on someone’s doorstep and magically be taken into the family as one of their own. Life doesn’t work that way. The foster care system is a horribly broken system (at least in the US it is) and that character many times won’t have access to that. In the US, for that information to be given there needs to be reciprocated interest in both the fostered child and the biological parent (usually the father). In divorce proceedings, the courts will almost always give the child to the mother unless the mother has a severe strike against her that would make her unfit to keep a safe environment for her child (prison time, drugs, etc.). The courts really dislike the idea of taking a baby away from its mom, which means that fathers rarely get custody of the child, and a non-blood relative even less than that. When the child is underage, the biological parent can’t show up on a doorstep and demand to see their child. They need to go through the courts and express a desire in having a relationship with their child. The child would then get an advocate, who would speak for them in court and make sure their wishes (to see or not to see their parents) are expressed. The foster system is messy and wrong and sometimes cruel, and if you are going to write switched at birth or foster-twin stories, you need to do your research on the judicial system. It isn’t just showing up on a doorstep with a birth certificate. It’s gritty and messy and if you want it, you have to take in it all.
Next week we are going to talk about realism, and how to really capture both the voices of cast members, as well as realistically write living scenarios. Remember to take Fanfiction 101 Exam 1 if you haven’t yet, and everything from this unit until Crossovers will be on Exam 2.

Everything Has Changed
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All I knew this morning when I woke
Is I know something now, know something now I didn't before
And all I've seen since eighteen hours ago is green eyes and freckles
And your smile in the back of my mind making me feel like
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Tina's POV
What hadn't I encountered in the past forty-eight hours? Upon meeting Mr. Newt Scamander, my already crumbling world was thrown into an even larger pit of chaos. Several people had died, including Credence. I had failed to save him from his adoptive mother and my own co-workers as well, which made me a pretty lousy Auror. After nearly being executed for assisting a criminal, what chance did I have at reclaiming my job?
Thankfully, there was one good thing to come out of all this destruction. Newt and I had become friends through the process of finding his creatures, which turned out to be very different from the kind of connection we shared when we first met. If I've learned anything in the past couple of days, it's that things (people in particular) are not always what they seem. I still found it hard to believe that Graves was Grindelwald in disguise. How long had he pretended to be my former boss? With a horrible feeling in my stomach, I remembered how Graves wiped the mustard off of my lip after I had stormed into the Major Investigative department. It had been Grindelwald all along. I quickly turned my mind to other matters.
All the creatures I had seen recently (not to mention rules I'd broken) made me feel as if I was living someone else's life. Who was this alternate version of myself and where did she come from? Perhaps she had been kept hidden under the surface for so long that she had been forgotten. After all, doing so was necessary in order to perform well at my job. That's why many criminals turned out to be nothing more than normal people who felt as if they had no other choice. They did what they had to do to get the job done.
Then there was Mr. Kowalski. He was simply in the wrong place at the wrong time. Newt's carelessness had hopelessly entangled him into the world I worked so hard to protect, the one that was being threatened by the darkest wizard of all time. Even if Newt's creatures hadn't escaped, there was still the destruction caused by the Obscurus (unfortunately Credence) to deal with. Well, it was dealt with, all right. Enough dwelling on the past, Tina, I scolded myself. It was rare for me to do so, but the past few months had been tough and I could feel myself sinking deeper into a place of hopelessness more than ever before.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
And all I feel in my stomach is butterflies the beautiful kind
Making up for lost time, taking flight, making me feel right
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Despite all that had transpired, I could recognize some sort of light in this continuous tunnel of darkness. Besides meeting Newt, I had been reminded of what it felt like to be an Auror. I wasn't exactly on the right side this time, but the rush of adrenaline felt eerily similar. After playing by the rules for so long, I had experienced a taste of what it was like to be on the run. My mind still had a hard time believing that I had been in such a perilous position. It wasn't every day that I got my own wanted poster.
The past forty-eight hours were definitely impulsive, to say the least. I acted on my instincts, which proved to be right in the end. Thank goodness. I don't know what I'd have done if things had turned out worse than they did. It didn't always work, but sometimes refusing to acknowledge the worst possible outcome allowed me to believe in the more average yet more likely outcomes of any given situation. If I had to describe it, I'd say that dwelling on the worst thing that could happen often made me feel trapped. It made me feel like it was the only option and that there was no hope. Whatever I faced, I had to think positively, something I struggled with considering my childhood.
It's hard to 'think happy thoughts' when your parents die young and you're left alone to raise your younger sister. There was no time for wishful thinking or innocent daydreams, not when someone else depended on me. I clearly remember Queenie leaning against me, her head on my shoulder, asking, "When do you think I'll meet my husband?" I smiled weakly, the direct result of a hardened heart. Tired and a tiny bit irritable (but trying my best not to show it), I replied, "I don't know." There wasn't time for me to fantasize about my future husband (did he even exist?), and it showed.
On the flip side, Queenie thoroughly enjoyed pretending to be the damsel in distress. She could defend herself, don't get me wrong, but she also didn't mind donning a pretty pink dress while I came to her rescue. As much as Queenie enjoyed being the princess, I equally enjoyed playing the role of her savior. After all, guys weren't the only ones with the power to save others. Perhaps it was this specific moment in time that sealed my fate. The day our parents died, it seemed like the whole world had fallen on my shoulders. So I did what I had always done best: taking care of others.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Come back and tell me why
I'm feeling like I've missed you all this time
And meet me there tonight
And let me know that it's not all in my mind
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Come on, Teenie. Please?" my sister whined. "Alright, I'll go" came my reluctant response. Every part of me wanted to stay home and spend some time alone yet I knew how important this Valentine's Day dance was to Queenie. She had been going on about it as soon as she had found out. Not only that, but she insisted I accompany her to fulfill my duties as a sister and wing-woman. I could tell she was still hung up over Jacob, so I ultimately agreed, shaking my head as I slipped on the dress I wore whenever I had to go undercover. Here goes nothing.
I smiled as I watched Queenie enchant yet another lovestruck lad, no magic necessary. Her looks were more than enough to persuade practically any man to dance with her, even those that came with dates. She simply had an unspoken connection with everyone, some sort of invisible quality that allowed her to fit in wherever she went. Despite my best efforts, I was a little bit jealous. I knew she struggled in other areas and found her Legilimency to be a burden sometimes, but I envied how easily people liked her. Queenie was sweet and someone others could relate to. Me? Not so much.
As I watched my sister dance, I couldn't help but think back to the question she asked me during our childhood. I manipulated it slightly so that I would have to answer it on my own behalf. When would I meet my future husband? An even bigger question formulated before I could stop it: what if I had already met him? After all, there was no guaranteed way of knowing who my future husband was until we were married, and I had no idea when that would be. I wasn't exactly against the idea of marriage, but I also didn't see any reason to rush into things. In fact, I thought it made more sense to wait before settling down. Unfortunately, my fellow Americans didn't share this philosphy.
I would never admit it to anyone other than myself (even that was a challenge), but I had truly missed Newt and hoped he would return to America. He had unintentionally caused a large amount of trouble, sure, but there was something about him that made me want to learn more. More about him, more about his creatures, etc. Thankfully, we had been sending letters back and forth since that day on the docks. I thoroughly enjoyed receiving a letter from Newt; it was a Goldstein family ritual. Every time a letter came in, Queenie and I would huddle together and read it silently, my thoughts practically spoken aloud as I read. Sometimes I wished I was the only one who read the letters-they were addressed to me, after all-yet I knew they made Queenie happy to know that I was happy.
My peaceful thoughts continued as I reminisced on recent moments. Reality bled through just a little, flashes of Queenie dancing coming into focus. The two intertwined to form a nice fantasy where Newt was here and the possibilities were endless. I knew daydreaming was childish (not to mention pointless), but pretending Newt was somewhere in the crowd gave me a sense of contentment. I could dance with him, and Queenie would surely make things less awkward between us. My heart fluttered at the thought of it. With a lighthearted smile, I sighed, hoping that Newt felt even the slightest amount of affection that I felt for him.

What would you say are the best and worst fandoms you are/have been in? Does negative fandom experience impact your enjoyment of a story?
*screams in fear*
Tumblr media
Kidding. But in my experience: all fandoms iz the same. Doesn’t matter if it’s sports, or movies, or music, or stories. It’s always the same thing. Fiction in particular is my main fandom, and I think the fact that the art we consume is often seen as a personal part of us, as a part of our identity, makes it hard to extract ourselves from the reality that someone who criticizes something we like, or who likes a different part of what we like, or who dislikes exactly what we like, is not criticizing you. I think people also have a tendency to make it personal and assume everyone has the same needs as them, when that’s not true. Sometimes what’s good for you can hurt someone else, and vice versa, which is why empathy and nuance are vital to a good fandom experience.
Thus far, I’ve had extremely positive experiences in the Hunter x Hunter fandom (when we’re not dead) especially in the Kurokura subset. I think a lot of hate comes from outside the fandom; I think what, for me, makes a fandom suck is when fans within the fandom start gatekeeping about how you have to ship something (even if you both ship it!) and harassing ppl with different opinions via vaguing and outright lying about your interactions with them.
Sometimes a negative fandom experience affects my enjoyment. Sometimes it does not. The MDZS fandom has... woof sometimes, but tbh, I’m still just as excited about posting for it as before the Bad Things, and the Reylo Star Wars fandom has a lot of hate from antis (like, to an extent I feel is perhaps unparalleled), but it hasn’t affected my enjoyment of the story or ship at all.
There are two cases I can think of where the fandom has kind of ruined my enjoyment, and I’ve discussed them both before. *shrugs* However, both times there are other factors the affect my enjoyment of the fandom that are unrelated to my experiences with the fans. The first is actually a subset of the one of the fandoms I mentioned loving (a shipping subset). I’m now no longer interested in producing content for said ship (I wrote two fairly well received fanfics for it), but I would’ve probably stuck it out if it weren’t for the fact that live action’s portrayal of a ship I always multishipped kind of made me prefer the latter instead of preferring the former like I had before. But now I have another option I prefer, so why subject myself to intellectual dishonesty and bullying? (Note: many fans of the ship are WONDERFUL and I love them and still vaguely ship it; the loudest voices in any fandom are always the awful ones, though.) As for the other... the bullying was in particular out of control in the first fandom I actively produced metas for, and escalated to the point where I was having anxiety attacks, vomited from stress, sobbing pretty much daily in the bathroom at work, and well you get the picture. Bullies will always find targets though. Anyways, the story’s ending was also something I disliked, hence why I withdrew from that fandom--if I had liked it, though, I might’ve stuck it out. I can never really know.
*whispers* gatekeeping your own fandom is a sure way to ensure it dies. I’ve seen it happen numerous times to fandoms I’m only loosely interested in (Finnrey, got told I wasn’t wanted because I liked Reylo), the first fandom I mentioned

this is a day late (sorry, i was under a lot of stress yesterday, rip!) but to celebrate fanfic writer appreciation day, here are recommendations of some fics i feel havent gotten enough love.
Desperate Times by kagayaki - not everybody knows this, but despys story started with kota. he was "born" chasing after him with a bouquet of flowers, and died chasing him too, falling short in matches again and again and unable to match his brilliance. here, kagayaki adds golden lovers context and gets into despys head the way they do so well to make the situation feel all the more brutal.
are you aware the shape i’m in? (my hands they shake, my head it spins) by veroniques - chuck and trent struggle to communicate, overcome their fears, and seize the kind of relationship they want. it shocks me how little fic there is for them and this is probably the best one. lots of pain, but theres hope in sight.
The Boy Who Went Into The Woods And Disappeared by beedekka - 300 words of dreamy ddt-era golden lovers. kenny is always chasing and losing kota, huh?
Turn Yourself by reason_says - a perfect answer to the question of how andras is functioning within oedo tai, if she really is a demon. she criticized them for not being heelish enough, but maybe theres a deeper reason for that… and this is just one of the best drabbles ive ever read, the word choice is beautiful.
love isn't as easy as it seems by dirtylittlewar - great bushi/naito that shows us exactly why these two choose each other. set in one of the most mundane parts of their lives, yet of the utmost importance to them, i think.
White Lovers by hard-luck-hero - an adaptation of taichi and gotos twitter interactions into a lovely white day uh…"romance". sweet and antagonistic at once, with japanese cultural details.
The Bloody Fool by Mithen - on commentary during the new japan cup, rocky said that some in chaos had been talking about kicking yoshihashi out. this fic addresses that in a positive way and makes us all love yoshihashi even more. basically no one has seen it cause it was an exchange gift and yall need to read it, its so good.
You show them ! by Nine (8has) - a douki fic that carefully cuts through the contradicting statements we were given about him this past bosj, amidst an overbearing taichi, an irresistible king, and an absent older brother. dramatic and enriching.
No Reason In Particular by buckleupbaby - *obviously* we need to stan murder friends with benefits. but beyond that, this is one of buckleupbabys best that i dont see talked about a lot. the addition of a new faction member can cause growing pains sometimes. this has naito characterization to end them all, in my opinion.
A Victory Cry by noctecat - johnny falls headfirst into heel logic, and ciampa lovingly guides him every step of the way. perfect understanding of these characters and why we might want a good person to make very bad choices. (axel reccing wwe fic??? oddly enough, yes. my friend who makes me think about diy, you know who you are.)
Hana Returns by Nickman300  - in which we get to have maximum joy and anguish for not one but multiple relationships in probably the best ensemble fic ive ever read. two ex-lovers who know each other too well get back together and begin to work through the parts of their lives that had been keeping them apart. im known for having long comments, but for this ive written uh. several thousand words, its just that good. i first read this when i knew nothing about stardom, its very accessible.
finally, an author…
butchboigirl - i tried to limit myself to wrestling fic since thats probably what everyone reading this is into, but this author is too important to me to not mention. they are literally the best writer i have found online, ever. and yet they are not nearly popular enough, probably because their subject, which happens to be my gender, is very niche. you can find their ao3 here, where theyve written incredible takes on the notebook and beauty and the beast. more significant for me personally is their original stories, which feature real butch/femme and butch/butch love, and blinding amounts of intimacy.
theres a couple fics i wish i could rec that i can no longer find-- one was a non-wrestlers au undisputed era h/c set in the early 2000s and the other an overview of drew gulaks history, from his time on the indies into his breakdown after losing tony on 205live. both had so much feeling in them, and i appreciate the authors for what they gave me at the time of reading!

Tom x Julia - NSFW ALPHABET
A/N: For this NSFW ABC, I decided doing things a bit differently… Tom and Julia themselves will be answering it!
Disclaimer: Characters belong to Pixelberry Studios.
Rating: +18 (NSFW. If you'd like to not be tagged on this type of content, tell me! If you'd like to be tagged on my Tom x F!MC fanfics, tell me!)
Word count: +2,500
Interviewer: Hello, and thanks for agreeing on answering this… uh, quiz. It’s a very intimate and explicit interview, so if you two could go on details, the better.
Tom: How intimate?! What do you mean explicit?! Julia, to what did you drag me onto?!
Julia: Thanks for having us! And relax, Tom, it’ll be fun! Okay, let’s do this! What’s the name of the quiz again?
I (with a smirk): "NSFW Alphabet"
*Tom immediately blushes*
T (murmuring): Oh my god, I’m having a bad feeling about this…
I: Alright, let’s begin: A = Aftercare. What are you like after sex? What do you do after steamy time? Fall asleep? Pillowtalk? Go for another round?
J: We just cuddle and talk. We're not the type to fall asleep, so we usually go grab something to eat…
T: Yeah, all that exercise always leaves me starving.
I: Oh, and what do you usually eat?
T and J (in unison): Pancakes
J: We make them together. It's a cool pastime, you know? Cooking together. You know a lot about the other person… Like, how messy Tom is in the kitchen.
T: In my defense, that bag of flour was already open! When we're too lazy we just order pizza, though.
I: Next letter… B = Body part. What's your favourite part of your partner’s body?
*Julia and Tom share a look, their eyes roaming each other's body and they both blush at the same time*
T: You go first. You're the one who brought us here.
J (rolls her eyes, avoiding making eye contact with Tom): It's weird. You'll find it stupid.
I: We won't. Take your time.
*Julia takes a deep breath and starts speaking again*
J: It might sound a bit weird, but--
T: Oh my God, is that my di--
J: No! I mean, I like it too, but… uh, it's not that thing! I mean, it's not my favorite thing! *Julia's cheeks turn pinker and pinker as she gets more tongue tied. Tom looks confused and the interviewer has to bite back a laugh* Uh, I really like this little tummy that shows up when you sit. *she confesses in a really, really low voice*
T: What?! Tummy?
J: Y-yeah… I actually am not a fan of ripped off bodies. They don't look natural to me. And that little tummy is… adorable.
T: Then maybe I should start drinking more beer. Because I got this tummy definitely from beer.
J: Absolutely not. You're insufferable when you're drunk.
I: What happens when you get drunk?
J: He starts telling these stupid jokes, but can't finish them because he's already laughing at it. And he laughs at literally anything. And he got this really loud laughter.
T: Hey, those jokes are gold! And you just turn into this killing machine when you're drunk! *Tom turns to the interviewer* Last time we went to a karaoke we got kicked out of there because she started picking up on fights with everybody!
J: Of course, no one knew how to sing decently there!
I: What about you, Tom? What is your favorite part of your girlfriend's body?
*Both the interviewer and Julia look at him expectantly, while his face flushes slightly*
T: I… really like her hips.
J: You mean my butt.
T: No! It really is your hips! They're... soft.
J: Ah, this is why you're always literally grabbing them! And looking at my butt! You perv--
T: Uh, what's the next question? *he takes a sip on the bottle of water that the interviewer offered to them before*
I: C = Cum. *Tom almost chokes on his water* Anything related to it.
T: Uh, what do you want to know about it? It happens, yeah. I make her cum and she makes me cum. This is what is supposed to happen, right? Isn't it?
J: Breathe, Tom.
*He takes a deep breath, trying to compose himself. Julia chuckles softly*
J: Yeah, we love making each other cum. Tom won't admit it out loud, but he loses his mind when I swallow it.
T: Oh my god, Julia…
J: I can see it on your face, babe.
I: Onto next letter… oh, this one is nice! D = Dirty Secret. What is a dirty secret of yours?
T: Uh… our first time was in a photo booth. And I got pictures of when Julia almost literally attacked me.
J: Shut up, you got into it very fast. And Tom is the biggest softie™ ever, but he might go rough… if I ask nicely. Right, Tom? *she smirks at him, trailing a finger down his arm, seductively and he has to shuffle away from her. Julia laughs*
I: Oh, how rough?
J: Hm, I guess I still have some marks here… *attempts to lift her t-shirt up, but Tom interrupts her*
T (with his face bright red): What's our next letter?! E?!
I: Exactly, E = Experience. How experienced are you? Do you know what they’re doing?
T: I've had like zero experience before Julia. She taught me everything I know.
J: And Tom's a fast and very eager learner. *she bumps her shoulder playfully on his and he ducks his head, a shy grin on his lips* I've had a few previous relationships, but Tom definitely is my first love and serious partner. But I thought you had a girlfriend in high school?
T: I had a girlfriend during sophomore year for three weeks, until I got fed up of her calling me 'senpai' all the time. I had some crushes after it, but they never developed to something more, until I met you.
J: Aww… I love you, Tomoichi Sato.
T: I love you too, Julia Vance.
I (smiling at them): This is all very sweet, but shall we continue on our interview? F = Favourite Position. I guess no further explanation is needed.
T: We never talked about it before, but… I love when she rides me... And when she takes control.
J (pretends to be shocked): Gasp! Oh, really?
T (shoves her from her chair, making her laugh loudly): Jerk!
J: Yeah, I'm pretty sure everyone knows who's the sub in this relationship. *chuckles* I like when you get behind me, Tom...
T (genuinely surprised): For real? *Julia nods, smiling sheepishly*
J: I don't know, it's so exciting to me. Because in a sense I don't know what, or more specifically, when it'll happen, you know? Since I can't see your face. Does it make sense? It doesn't matter if we're standing or lying down; that's the position that gives me more pleasure.
I: Woo, are you feeling the air getting hot and bothered in here? I certainly am. Alright, next one: G = Goofy. Are you more serious on the moment or more humorous?
J: If we aren't being goofy, then you bet something’s wrong.
I: Yeah, I can feel it. H = Hair. How well groomed are you?
J: I keep it trimmed.
T: Same. None just feels… unnatural? I don't know.
I: Okay, what about I = Intimacy? How are you during the moment? We're talking on the romantic aspect.
T: To be honest, intimacy is everything. Without it, we can't be ourselves with one another. I've never felt as connected to someone as I feel with Julia.
J: Yeah, and sex definitely helps bringing us even more closer.
T: Having sex without intimacy is just a weird concept to me.
I: J = Jack Off. Anything about masturbation.
T: Hmm… I confess I started masturbating a whole lot more after meeting her. Especially when we're apart because we almost literally live on the other side of the country from each other. And the longing sometimes is just too much.
J: We might even do some… hmm… very explicit video calls sometimes… Right, Tom?
T: Yeah, I always have to lock my door, because Andy has no sense of privacy and enters my room whenever he wants, usually to borrow a game. *Julia bursts out in laughter*
J: And when we’re finally together, we both love stimulating and pleasing each other.
T: Yeah, Julia has this really cute face when she is close to come.
I: Ooh… K = Kink. Any kink, you two?
T: Is dirty talking a kink?
J: C'mon Tom, we both know you like a light BSDM.
*Tom blushes furiously*
T: Nothing too rough, though! I can't stand pain.
J: Yeah, you're a big baby.
T: Julia loves getting it on in public spaces.
J: And you never can say no.
I (chuckling softly): Okay, L = Location. Got any favourite places to do the do?
T: I'll be honest, nothing is better than doing it on a comfortable surface like a bed or a couch.
J: Taking a shower together is nice too and saves water!
I: That's true. Now, tell me about M = Motivation. What turns you on? What gets you going?
J: I lose my mind whenever Tom gets this frown, like when he's playing a particular tough level or when beating monsters. That night when you showed up with that baseball bat and killed those lake monsters, I swear, I almost took my clothes off right there. I just didn't because Parker and Danni were there too.
T (laughing): Oh yeah, I can get pretty sexy when fighting for our lives. I guess my biggest motivator (and indicator that I'm doing something right) is when Julia calls my name while… I don't know, just her can make me feel this way when she says it.
J: Like this, Tom…? *she purrs into his ear before pecking on his neck and the boy's face turns red immediately* And if you want to turn Tomoichi Sato on, just kiss his neck. That is his most sensitive area.
I: What about turn offs? Something you wouldn't do? A N = NO?
J: I am completely against mixing food with sex. That would be so anti hygienic. Hell no.
T: The idea of inflicting pain is just awful to me.
I: O = Oral. Who prefers giving? And receiving? Who got better skills?
T: I'm much more a giver than Julia.
J: Because you're so eager to please me. And I ain't rejecting if you want to give. Of course I prefer receiving. Tom's skills are on point. He knows exactly what to do and how I like it. I taught him right. *she winks*
I: Interesting, very interesting… How's your P = Pace? Are you fast and rough? Or more slow and sensual?
T: I guess it depends on our mood, what we feel like doing in the moment. We like experimenting, learning what each other enjoys more.
J: We usually start slow and picks up speed from there.
I: What are your opinions on Q = Quickies rather than proper sex? How often do you do it?
J: Quickies are great to release some stress and when we just can’t hold back anymore, but don’t have enough time (which can happen pretty often).
T: ...Though proper sex is unbeatable.
I: And do you take R = Risks?
T: I mean, we've done it in public spaces with people around more than I'd like to admit.
J: But we always use protection. I make sure he wears a condom. I ain't taking that risk.
I: Alright, we're finishing it, guys! Just hang in there a bit more. Tell me about your S = Stamina. How many rounds can they go for, how long do you last, etc.
*They share a look*
T: I don't know, I would say we're average?
J: Sometimes we can go for 2 to 3 rounds… And we last just enough to usually come together (sometimes he lasts longer, sometimes I last longer…) and that is fantastic.
I: T = Toy. Do you own any toys? If yes, do you use them? On each other or on yourself?
J: My best friend thought it would be hilarious giving me a fucking dildo a few years ago. *Julia rolls her eyes annoyedly* I had to keep it safe so my parents or Elliot wouldn't find it. Though I confess it became rather useful after I met Tom and, you know, we started this long distance relationship thing. We use it only on me, because I don't think it's safe or hygienic to use this type of stuff on more than one person.
T: We use some ties sometimes. It's nice.
J: 'It's nice'. Oh my god, look at your face! *bursts in giggles*
I: U = Unfair. How much you like to tease.
T: Jeez, Julia is so unfair! She likes sitting on my lap when I'm playing, or grinding on me and… Yeah, you got the picture. She's teasing me literally all the time.
J: Well, I can't help it if you make me horny! Just by standing there! Looking adorable and sexy all the time!
I: Let's talk about V = Volume. How loud you are? What sounds do you make?
*Tom giggles*
T: Julia can get… very loud. Like, very. It's good though, because I know I'm doing it right.
J (with her cheeks flushed): Good for you and your ego, because, uh, poor Andy. I bet that other time he heard me.
T: Who wouldn't?
*He avoids a punch from hers*
J: Anyway, yeah, I definitely am the loudest. Though Tom makes all these whimpers and moans.
T: Which turn you on even more.
J: Yeah, they're so cute and, uh, sexy.
I: This is the second time you call him cute and sexy.
J: I mean, haven't you seen him?! *she points to her boyfriend, who chuckles*
T: Thanks for being my number #1 fan, Julia. It's reciprocated. *he kisses her forehead and she rests her head on his shoulder, sighing contently*
I: Okay, W = Wild Card. You can tell me anything. Something you never told each other. Is there something you'd like to try? Anything.
*Tom ducks his head, a bit embarrassed*
J: What?
T: You know… Since you usually wear more loose clothes, the first time I saw you completely naked, I was... surprised to know that you actually have breasts.
*Julia bursts out in laughter*
J: Oh, this is why you kept staring at and touching my breasts with so much interest! I'm loving this interview, so many revelations!
I: Since we're talking about sizes… X = X-ray. Tell us what's going on behind all these clothes!
T: Uh… I'm average? Nothing special in here.
J: Well, since we're already talking about my breasts, I wear 32C.
I: Y = Yearning. How high is your sex drive?
T: I'd say average again? It depends on the day and on our mood.
J: Yes, sometimes we’ll want to bang until we both pass out. *chuckles* There are days that we just want to cuddle and watch some TV. Though I can say for sure it got a bit higher since we started dating.
I: Alright, final letter! Z = Zzz. How quickly do you fall asleep after sex?
T: We actually don’t usually fall asleep afterwards. Although I feel physically tired, my mind is wide awake.
J: Me too. Like we said in the beginning of this interview, we end up talking. Or grabbing something to eat!

Come at me with the lore, fam, after making my own overly complicated fanfic for almost more than a decade with its own magic system nothing surprises me
//OH BOY YOU’RE IN FOR A TREAT
I’m putting it under a cut to save your dash.
TW: A lot of stuff. Rape, sexual abuse, abortion, murder... just... just prepare for the worst.
//Okay, so, Blazblue AU.
Key characters here are: Kagura Mutsuki, Ragna the Bloodedge, Celica A. Mercury, my OC Riku Akasaka, and of course Ren and Goro.
First off, in the BB world, there is a one-world government police state that’s currently been having a bunch of in-fighting and schisms since... forever. They had a civil war (the good guys in this fight lost 8( ), and Kagura has been trying to fix shit for uh... a long time. He’s got the true heir to the throne (Homura Amanohosaka, I think? Their name is long.)
This is an alternate canon where Kokonoe decided to bring her dead aunt back to life like, 3 games early. So it diverges during Calamity Trigger, or The Only Game I Understood (tm). Celica has this power to absorb seithr, or magic energy that can also kill you. The main villain’s body is kind of MADE of seithr. The main villain, Terumi, had a plan to merge with his host and make himself unkillable by linking his life to Noel Vermillion’s. But because Celica decided to show up and cling to Ragna, plans did not go through, but the time loop didn’t restart. Ragna’s plans are at a standstill as well, and he gets attached to Celica, and... it’s complicated.
To sum up Ragna’s story super quick because it’s side information-- He falls for Celica, they have twins, Ragna realizes that his soul-eating grimoire could kill said kids, gets Jubei to cut it off of him, and they live mostly happily for a while until Celica starts dying of seithr poisoning. Then Terumi decides to finally pay back for having his plans ruined, kills Celica, burns Ragna’s house down AGAIN (you know, for extra trauma), and kidnaps one of his kids. The other had a power like her mother so she didn’t get taken because being near her made Terumi sick. Ragna nearly died in all of this, spent years trying to make a decent life for his daughter, got arrested, and then after basically making prison hell for everyone else with his anger and violence, was basically given a plea deal by Kagura of “Look my dude, get on my side in this government coup I’m doing and we’ll basically give you your daughter back, a job, and a steady income. We cool bro?” Aaaand by the time Akechi is around he’s a parent with 7 kids, 2 who are the same age as Akechi and grew up being his friends.
Kagura is the part where it gets relevant to Akechi. Kagura hears about this scandal with the Fumizuki family (long story short Shido is a Fumizuki in this case because it’s a Duodecim family they haven’t used yet, and it means “month of erudition” so I figured a focus on intelligence above all else would be fitting...) involving a bastard kid whos mom just died. Now the whole family is looking to basically throw this kid as far away from them as possible.
Kagura, at this point, is a walking scandal magnet and has stopped giving a fuck. He married a woman literally nobody in his family liked, started a government coup, gave Ragna the Bloodedge the sweetheart deal of a lifetime and more. His wife is my character Riku, who uh...
Goddamnit, another character break. You see why I said this would take a year and a half? XD Anyway, Riku. Riku is one of the last Japanese people in this setting. Japan got magic nuked in Blazblue, to put it bluntly. A giant world-ending monster decided to appear there first. Japan is *still* not inhabitable centuries later. The Japanese people are very few and far between, and Riku’s family is one of the last families that can boast a 100% Japanese heritage. Y’know. Except for Riku. Because her mom went and married an outsider without her family’s permission. Her mom doesn’t give a single solitary fuck what others think and does what she wants. So she’s actually only half Japanese, and her family treats her and her older brother like shit for it. They’re basically only cared about if they’re “useful”. Her brother went into the military academy to basically gain info for the family (they like to hoarde grimoires as well so the NOL and the Akasaka family kind of hate each other), but he “mysteriously went MIA”. I.e. was violently murdered and had his grimoire stolen. Riku went to the academy after to figure out what happened to her beloved onii-chan. It... did not go well for her. TW sexual abuse- she was raped in her freshman year, ended up pregnant, and when she went home in her third trimester, the head of her family forced her into an abortion that caused serious damage. They cut her hair off and basically sent her back to school traumatized and miserable. And now everyone in school treats her like a whore. She decides fuck it, if they’re gonna treat her like that, she’s going to use being a “whore” to her advantage. She slept her way to status, and, using her own special abilities, gathered a bunch of blackmail on literally everyone in the NOL. Nobody can mess with her, but she also has no one she can rely on.
She was initially trying to use Kagura as well (trying to get put in intelligence so she could ruin the people who made her life hell), but Kagura noticed she didn’t actually seem to enjoy sex. He helped her get surgery to correct the damage done to her (he only convinced her to go along with this by saying it was for his own benefit. She did not trust him. He said basically he wanted to be the first person to make her enjoy sex.) She eventually began to open up to him and trust him when she realized they were very much alike. They both were isolated from their families for not following tradition, both had many enemies, and both genuinely wanted to destroy the government around them and create a better world. She joined him in the whole government coup thing, using her intelligence-gathering skills. They’re newlyweds when Akechi is a kiddo.
Understandably, considering all of this, Riku doesn’t really want kids... the trauma of it all is a bit too raw. So Kagura wasn’t really planning to adopt him? He figured he’d give him temporary housing, then send him off to Ragna. Ragna would gladly adopt the kid after all. But he and Riku found out they were very attached to this sad little kid who didn’t understand why everyone looked down on him. Riku, in particular, could relate to his problems.
So Akechi gets a nice, (mostly) stable family! He meets Ren in middle school. Ren outed a pedo teacher that was very well-liked by most of the students and staff, getting him fired and arrested. So, he was something of an outcast. Akechi, upon hearing this, decides that Ren is a hero. (And Ren p much instantly had a crush on him after that). The two grow up as childhood friends. They’re pretty inseparable. Ren doesn’t really like being at home with his family (they’re very much the type that says nothing to avoid being a target for potential assassination. The NOL has been legit very dangerous their entire lives, after all. So their outspoken, determined child causes them no shortage of headaches), so he’s always hanging out at Akechi’s place.
You can probably guess that, actually knowing Akechi’s life story, Ren *actually* assaulted Shido when he saw the dude trying to assault another woman. He was genuinely enraged and just kinda lost it. >>; Thankfully connections save Ren. Kagura basically goes “Ok so enjoy going to the military academy as a reform school. Also you need someone to keep an eye on you. ....My son can do that.” Really... he just wanted Ren to look out for his son.
See, Akechi in this verse is still very concerned with status? He feels that he owes it to his mother and father to live up to his family name, because they’ve done so much for him. He wants to be accepted by the Duodecim as a whole. Riku and Kagura tried their very best to keep him the hell away from all of that political bullshit, but the kid decided to go into the military anyway. He’s not physically the strongest, and he’s pretty naive and childish, deep down. His parents are pretty damned sure that Goro will be eaten alive if left on his own there. (The military academy is, for the record, it’s own massive city. So they wouldn’t exactly be able to keep an eye on him.) So, Renren gets asked to protect his friend.
They also get chosen by two grimoires while there. These are the Rebel’s Grimoire and the Hero’s Grimoire. Grimoires are basically... to put it bluntly, training wheels for magic. Most people suck at magic by nature. Hell, most people don’t even USE grimoires. They use the even bigger training wheels that are Ars Magus. Grimoires usually specialize in a particular ability. They have their own rules, conditions for use, and often choose their hosts. People fuse with their grimoires over time. If the two become completely synchronized it’s called a Remix Heart. (This is the only important lore information from Remix Heart btw, I saved you from reading a crappy fanservice manga, you’re welcome.)
The Hero’s Grimoire picks a host with a strong sense of justice. The Rebel’s Grimoire picks a host with a very rebellious spirit. The catch is, they always pick their hosts at the same time, and the hosts are always very connected souls, two sides of the same coin. The Rebel’s grimoire also likes to do this *wonderful* thing where it latches on your face and only accepts you if you rip it off. If you don’t, it kills you! Fun times. Goro turned around to look at Ren when this happened, and the Hero’s Grimoire embedded itself into his spine. (Ren’s looks like a pair of glasses when not in use, Akechi’s looks like a crow tattoo with a weird growth between his shoulder blades.)
The two grimoires are sentient and talk to their owners while giving them similar but contrasting powers. Ren can use his Third Eye ability from the games, destroy barriers, teleport through shadows, and has very little presence-- almost nobody notices him around unless he’s pointed out or makes himself known. Goro has the same third eye ability, can create barriers/obstructions, can obscure his movements in bright light (either dazzling people or simply teleporting in light), and has a glamour that attracts others to him. (Ren uses this to basically cling to Akechi at all times while nobody notices him. He loves it. Akechi hates it, because PLEASE STOP HITTING ON ME I HAVE A BOYFRIEND HE’S RIGHT. HERE. )
The phantom thieves also still exist in this AU! They have a different MO but similar intents and goals. Basically, they steal back what the NOL has taken from others. Or, if said thing can’t be replaced (like, say, innocence, trust, etc) then they’ll take what they consider a karmic equivalent (status, power, etc). It actually all started because Ren wanted to get Riku’s grimoire back (Akechi was still vERY upset that the government had it, how dare they do that to his family). So Akechi is on the team from the beginning. Whether he wants to be or not.
There’s a lot more but this is just the basics... @_@ I told ya it was a lot.
