Hello,
I’ve been a participant of NaNoWriMo for six years now, and a forums participant on the Young Writer’s Program for three years.
You might be wondering what’s happening on the forums, either on the YWP or the main NaNo site.
As far as I’m aware and have been involved, we brought up some concerns about neglectful moderation behavior on the adult site. Several adults supported us, and came out with their own allegations about neglectful or abusive moderation (for example, a moderator luring teens to a fetish website, who was fired but not banned, another one posting openly about porn who is still a moderator, and similar concerns.) On the YWP, our moderators, Rob Diaz and Marya Brennan have allowed open bullying and instead tone-policed those who fought back. They have allowed predator behavior on the site in several circumstances under the statement of “it does not explicitly violate our Codes” (despite it being open predatory behavior), and Rob Diaz has said racist things to another user in response to a Thanksgiving PSA.
The Board of Directors has now said that they did not know there was a separate YWP forum in the first place.
On the YWP side of things, the forums are being shut down indefinitely, and we are awaiting another response from the Board of Directors.
Please do not donate to NaNoWriMo.
Contact local schools and make them aware of the situation, and discourage advertising the YWP to kids.
I will reblog other posts from my fellow YWP users that h give more specific details.

Off-Brand NaNo Update #2
I was having a cottage weekend with friends, so I didn't write then, but yesterday I wrote! Quite a lot in my standards! I finished the prologue (and also wrote for a scene that comes in a chapter, because I sometimes like to jump around).
Words written: 1 948 Current word count: 16 347 Time written: 3h 55m
Here's an excerpt from the prologue!
Rigantona’s mind went black. When she came to again the smell of smoke was overpowering. She lay in the tall grass. Air was filled with smoke and distant screams. The carriages had been broken by the blast. Two of the horses were still whining in pain. She stood up, body aching. A nail from the broken carriages had penetrated her arm, but she barely noticed. The landscape had transformed from the home she once knew to the fires of purgatory in an instant. The dry autumn grass had caught on fire quickly. Everything was burning and drowned in the red haze. Even the sky… She looked up to the serpent, which covered the sky. It’s massive long body circled above, reaching from one horizon to the other. There was no words to describe the ancient bottomless horror that she found from the distant corner of her soul. She was but an ant in the feet of the beast. The many set of wings of the dragon glided it’s massive body through the sky as it’s hundreds of burning red eyes stared down at it’s handiwork. Then the cracks between the black scales began to glow, turning fire red and eventually glowing white like hot metal. She watched motionless, tears streaming down her face, as the beast reigned it’s fire down on the city across the river and evaporated countless lives and homes in an instant. Strong gust threw her back to the ground. She allowed herself to lay there for a moment and cry in impotent desperation. What could an ant do?

I finished the third chapter of "Recreation," yay!
Tumblr media
Yeah, just the third chapter, not the whole fic or anything, but look at the date of the last update:
Tumblr media
So this has been in the works for perilously close to a year and a half? 👀I think that deserves a tiny celebration, especially considering how long I've been struggling with writer's block.
Tumblr media
John's probably wondering when "15 Minutes," his reader fic, is going to get updated, then. Welp, Chief, you're up next, so let's keep our fingers crossed, hm?
Tumblr media
At least this one updated in this same year, so that's something, right?
Tumblr media
(Uh-oh, I'm not sure if my Spartans are buying what I'm trying to sell here, meep! 👀😉)
Now, fortunately, I have the next GIF manip ready for Kai's reader fic but I didn't get a chance to make anything for "15 Minutes" before my computer parted ways with making GIFs. 😭 So I'll have to either use something more generic for "15 Minutes," not add a GIF or wait to add one until I can make them again. I dunno, we'll see. I actually want to get at least the 2 next chapters roughly written out for "15 Minutes" before I post chapter 7 because we're about to hit a very large cliffhanger and I don't want to risk having to wait a long time before resolving it. 🤞😣🤞
"Recreation," though, is going to get its next chapter posted as soon as I'm done with the editing. This chapter is super-sized, almost as big as the first 2 together 😳 but I'd say that should be fine after such a long gap between updates, right? 🤷‍♀️
Okay, just wanted to share some good news for once! 🤗🤗🤗

NaNo Update
I'll be honest, I gave NaNo a very half-hearted go this year because I wanted to get the words out. But the issue with trying to get the words out - which I've always had with this challenge - is that I don't like the words, and when I don't like the words, I don't find continuing the project very inspiring.
I'm super burned out from NaNo, the only way I could finish it at this point is if I pushed through the burnout but I'm not doing that. I loved Released so much, and I'm not ruining this project for myself.
Having said that, congrats to people who have made it to the finish line! Further congrats to people who are almost there! And a genuine well done to the people who tried and figured out, yeah no I'm not doing this. Walking away from something that you wanted to do, but can't is really hard; but you tried, and you understood your own boundaries and that's more important. It's not a failure to look after yourself.

3,000 words for nano today! Bringing my book to a current total of 26,830 words.
The first two days were okay, days three and four were rough, but today I more than made up for it.
And I’m about to really get my hands dirty with the good stuff! I’m excited. Everything truly feels like it’s coming together for the first time in a long time.

NaNoWriMo Day 14: Herald At Dawn
***I'm doing half a nano (25k not 50k) cause I have too much other shit to do (school)***
Today's Wordcount/Today's Goal Wordcount: 856/835
Total Wordcount: 12101/25k
Goal Wordcount: 25k
Snippet:
“You are the ones who wrote the article about the Ekker trial. I ought to have known. Where did you get that information, coincidentally? I have some people who would be very eager to know.“ ”We did not, actually,” said Bill. James smiled. “It was my coworker who wrote it, Alexandrina McLelland. You may have heard of her? I believe she tried to get a job here, several years ago, but was denied on unclear grounds.“ Internally, James laughed. Bill was good. He was really, really good. There was a flicker of recognition and anger across the editor's face. Walter Greely had refused to hire a woman ten years ago, and she had gone to work for his small time rival. Now she was the author behind the single biggest news story in the entire city until this morning. He did not like this fact one bit. ”I—I believe I do recall her, yes. Unfortunately the position had been filled by someone already at the paper and there had been a mix up in the job posting.” Bullshit, thought James and Bill simultaneously.
Notes: my scriviner deleted 300 words from the word count and i cannot find them anywhere, even though i read through the entire thing and there doesn't seem to be anything missing, so that was one of the more terrifying hours in my entire life. But!!!!! I still wrote today, and I took a physics quarterly exam, so I'm very proud of that. the snippet today is a bit long but I think its worth it, i fucking LOVE it. Greely is a jackass and he's just realised how much he fucked up. (Also thank you Aster for helping me come up with a suitably rich asshole name, thank you)
Herald At Dawn taglist (ask to be added/removed): @thelaughingstag @gr3y-heron @another-white-void @amethyst-aster

Off-brand NaNo Update #1
Obviously I'm not using the official nano org website or anything anymore after hearing about all the shitty things, but I've never really done it properly anyway so it doesn't really change the way I do it. I learned yesterday about TrackBear from my friend. It's very cool, you can similarly track your progress as in the nano org website, but it's even better (you can track for example time instead of words!). So I made my own extremely low stakes nano goal, writing every week 7 hours during November, so 30 hours in total. I'll be tracking my words too, but I'm not putting goals for that.
I'm working on Bear Castle Cycle (I changed the working title again from Bear Castle Cronicles). I'm on my millionth rewrite of the first draft. I again made some major changes to the story (before starting this draft last year). The story has four distinct storylines that intersect very little, and I'm currently writing Valeri's storyline and I'll also start with Faerathos', since I recently re-outlined it. I still need to re-outline Fiolev's and Cassia's storylines. If I end up doing that in this month, I'll count the time spent on the outlining on my goal.
I already started after the midnight, by writing whooping 35 mins, during which I wrote 221 words for the prologue. I had mostly rewritten the prologue before, but I skipped the last scene since at the time there were still things I hadn't figured out about it. I'm now almost done with the prologue.
Words written: 221
Current word count: 14 399
Time written: 35 min

NaNo Update – Week 3???
Tumblr media
(An exchange from one of the missions, illustrated by LS. Quincy: the world’s most eloquent and diplomatic protagonist.)
Hello again! We’ve been busy. The “update every week” thing sure didn’t turn out... but it’s because we’ve been busy! A few missions have been successfully drafted since last update, and a few more outlined.
L.S. and I are at 63k words combined. Writing skill checks and narrative branches is just slower and full of more fiddly work. That said... it’s very satisfying to see our Act 1 Episode 1 progress excel sheet turn green one cell at a time.
...So far, my favorite drafted mission is the previously mentioned “attend a child’s birthday party” one. Hands down the most frightening experience in the game thus far.
