I don't even know what to say. I'm absolutely astounded by the fact that y'all have welcomed me into this community so kindly. I never expected to be back on this site, let alone be a creator <3 If it weren't for the encouragement of my great friend, @photo1030, I would have never posted Fireside nor would I have had the courage to continue writing After Dark. I owe her and my other friends ( @rivetingrosie4 @tortureddpoett and @mr-inkslinger ) so much for reigniting my passions when I thought all was lost. He stands outside Dutch's tent, awkwardly shifting his weight from one foot to the other, a nervous and impatient energy coursing through him as he hears the girls flitting about inside to get you ready. The anticipation of having to wait until the wedding to see you is eating at him, gnawing away at the frayed ends of his patience like a taught rope ready to snap. He could barge right in there and swoop you off of your feet, stealing you away and carrying you off to someplace where you two can be wed quickly and quietly. But the instant he hears your voice behind those tent flaps, he knows that waiting for you will be well worth it.

"I'm sure we won't be long in here..."

A beat of silence passes between you, like two lovestruck teenagers, smitten and not knowing what to say. Knowing he's still standing out there, your delicate hand pokes out of the cotton fabric, outstretched and blindly seeking his for comfort. The smallest glimpse of white lace clinging to your wrist is illuminated by the morning rays of light: a sudden reminder grounding him to the certainty of what's occurring within the next few hours.

"I love you, Arthur."

He takes your palm in his and you notice the subtle clamminess there like he's nervous, for the first time in his life, at the prospect of living rather than dying. A ghost of a smile washes over his lips as his eyes are downcast to your shadow upon the ground, watching as it intermingles with his, washing the greenery in the shadow of a lover's promise, "I love you too, Darlin'. Can't wait to make you mine."

Seduce Me Situations!

Nicknames! What would Mika call her potential love interest and what would they call her as nicknames?

James- "James" is a short enough name to not really need a nickname, though Mika does call him "Jay" every once in a while. If they're dating then Mika's preferred pet name for James is "Sunrise" or "My bookworm", one is referring to his preferred color and the other his nerd-like tendencies. She's probably called him "Nerd" before too. James doesn't really give Mika a nickname until they're dating, then she's "Love". I can also see him call her "Doll". He probably would have called her something sun related if she didn't get to it first.

Erik- "Erik" is even shorter of a name but Mika still managed to shorten it to "Eri". She also calls him "My liege" whenever she wants to teasingly match Erik's flirtatious energy. If they're dating, Mika probably goes down the cheesy pet names like "Dear", "Love" "Darling", "Sweetheart", etc. Though a unique name that Erik loves to be called is "Orchid", Mika called him that as Erik's eye and hair reminded her of the orchids she would usually see. Erik, of course, calls Mika "Princess" (or "Highness" in the Harem route) and that's basically her name now. There is no Mika, only Princess.

Sam- There is no shortening "Sam"; Sam is usually the shortened name. Instead, Mika calls Sam just "Sam" for the most part. Though, she might playfully sneak in a "Jerk" sometimes. After they start dating, the nickname "Jerk" becomes almost as common as Sam's "Doofus" nickname for Mika. Also "Babe" I can see Mika calling Sam Babe. I don't see Sam being much a nickname person. Though something Mika will never call Sam is anything monster related. That is a nickname no-no.

Matthew- Finally! A name that doesn't need a stretch to shorten it! "Matt" or "Matty"! Probably Matty, Matty is cuter. At first, Matthew was a little embarrassed by the nickname "Matty" but he learned to like it. After they're dating, I can see "Blue Jay" being a sweet nickname, especially since Matthew can canonically summon birds. I can definitely see Matthew calling Mika "Miki" before they're dating, especially when the "Matty" nickname started. After they start dating, I can see Matthew occasionally calling Mika "Kitten". Why? ...All I'm gunna say is that if you know Matthew's wiki page, you know why. A little bonus, they absolutely use some of the most cringy, old people pet names in a joking/teasing manner.

Damien- Okay... hear me out. "Damin". That's a weird ass shortening but it's an inside joke. Another would be "Carrot" especially when they're first getting to know each other. After they start dating, I feel like the default nickname for Damien would be "Sweetie" or "Hunny". It's just so classic romance and they fit that. As for nicknames Damien would call Mika, again the classics. "Sweetie", "Hunny", etc. An interesting one would be "Usagi" or "Usa". Usagi is the Japanese word for Bunny/Rabbit and Damien's second language is Japanese so I think it fits.

Diana- There's a canon one! Di! (Which unfortunately fits most of her endings) But others that Mika would come up with would be "Dia" (Also a little inside joke) and "Ana". After they start dating, I can see Mika and Saero scheming nicknames togethers but they can never really agree on a lot of them as Mika uses the name Diana and Saero uses the name Ezaeur. One they did agree on was "Lily" as a nod to Diana's ancestor. As for what Diana would call Mika back, she already uses "Dear" a lot. She might add "Darling" in a few times too.

Hi Zae! Okay, so like ... I'm only saying this because it's been on my mind for a while ... And I just saw something, and it just hit me, and I'm on anon because like, I just have something to confess and it has something to do with Hazbin Hotel's voice cast and it's kinda harsh and I don't want people to think I'm mean, but like ... okay. So? That whole like sketch about "How Allosexuals treat Alastor" and your post about "Allosexuals breaking in and knocking over the plants? I can't stop thinking about it because I've felt like this is *EXACTLY* how Alastor's own (Allosexual) voice actors tend to treat him and talk about him though? And like, they maybe even set a precedent for this behavior? And it's annoying? Like, I love Amir but one thing I will say in Bosco's favor is that Bosco seemed to lean into to the "fan service" aspect a bit more than Amir does and I even noticed that like, um okay so like, in the little clip that goes around of Blake discovering RadioDust for the first time, Amir just kinda gives off this little "disappointed parent oh no no face"? Like he doesn't even wanna entertain the thought? But then he kind of gives in and is like "okay, I guess...:" when other cast members started talking positively about it, but he originally looked for a split second like he was about to scold someone or give a little lecture or something and to me that was just like: "My guy, I love you but at least Half of this fandom was built on RadioDust fanservice for the past five years, know your history! What are you doing???" Anyway, what I'm getting at is that sometimes, when I see the "allosexual breaking into your house and knocking over plants post, I want to reblog it and just be like "This is Amir Talai, though." And then I feel sort of bad. Should I feel bad? I don't think I can watch any Hazbin Hotel Cast clips on youtube without being lowkey annoyed anymore. Like, of course I still love them but I don't know...

Oof. Yeah, my friend, I totally get where you’re coming from. And this is just my personal opinion/reflection on the topic, but I feel like this is a case (with Amir personally) of having absolutely zero fandom experience of any kind before taking on the role that he did, as well as what happens when an allo who knows nothing about being ace tries to stay true to an ace character.

tl;dr because I kind of tend to ramble: I really think all we can do is speculate, since we don’t actually know Amir; but also, I don’t think you should feel bad about having a negative reaction to an allosexual speaking over ace people about an ace character, even if he is the voice actor and seems to be a decent person.

First off: no. I don’t think you should feel bad about looking at that and going “Amir Talai though”. It’s the energy he’s putting off, and it’s not your fault that it’s his actions that are pulling that response out of you.

I think Amir has, ultimately, good intentions when it comes to portraying Alastor as accurately as possible. But judging by his past tweeting and the (admittedly hilarious) list of things he’s had to Google since becoming Alastor’s voice, it’s very clear that he does NOT understand what fandom is all about. And he does seem to genuinely be trying! The Zoom call with Blake is particularly telling for all of them, because Amir was very “oh fuck” and Blake was very “OMG DID YOU KNOW THIS WAS AN OPTION??? :D” when, like you said, RadioDust kept the HH fandom alive for four years. Clearly, none of them actually dove into the fandom prior to the project, and I’m hoping that further exposure to the fans might help. As long as they’re not the same as the “we’re going to bully Joel Perez because we hate Valentino” people.

(Also, on Amir’s reaction there, I have no idea if it was “but Alastor is asexual and shipping him is BAD” or if it was “Blake what are you doing bringing this up now people are gonna get mad”, which… with certain people, particularly that very mean vocal minority in the HuskerDust community, is a valid concern. But he and Blake seem extremely close, so I’m not sure Blake would have put him on the spot publicly if he knew Amir would have a genuine negative reaction. But idk, this is all speculation on people I’ve only seen in panels and stuff like that.)

With Amir being allo… I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, because he has publicly apologized for misrepresenting Alastor’s ace spectrum in the past which does suggest that he’s listening to people, but it’s really on him to actually talk to asexual people so he has examples of real experience to draw from. So many people think that asexual automatically means sex repulsed and aromantic automatically means romance repulsed, and because of that, I can understand why Amir came into this with those assumptions. But since he IS so dedicated to the fans and he genuinely loves playing Alastor and wants to be as true as possible to him, he needs to stop looking at asexuality from an allosexual perspective. I haven’t seen anything at all recent from him on the subject, so his perspective could have changed?

But I don’t think you should feel bad about having a negative reaction to the way he’s choosing to react to ships. He is speaking over ace people, whether he realizes that he’s doing that or not, and that isn’t okay. And honestly, having that negative reaction is a good way to call attention to the problem, because if he knows the ace umbrella community has a problem with his black and white perspective on this, I think he’s more likely to listen to us. If part of your hesitation is that you like Amir (which, admittedly, is part of mine), it’s genuinely okay to like a voice actor in general and still be mad at them/criticize them for an aspect of their character interpretation, because ultimately Alastor is our representation, not his. And it matters more if a demisexual/grayaro wants to depict Alastor as their type of aspec than how an allosexual thinks asexuality should be.

On a related note, my husband and I are taking a RadioDust cosplay to a convention later this year, and both Amir and Blake are going to be there, so we’re hopeful we can tell both of them that we’re both aroace spectrum, married, and huge devotees of the ship (both because we’d like to help reinforce the fact that Blake himself is on board the ship and because Amir desperately needs help). idk if it’ll do anything but maybe it’ll at least get him thinking more critically about it.

The ‘get better’ Journey

My fitness journey is really beginning for me this year. It took some work to get to this point to be completely honest. Many years of being hard on myself, and still not getting to the point of being happy with my weight, and how I felt in clothing. Welllll, I had to get some issues figured out first. What was causing me to be so hard on myself? What things have I been avoiding to the point of eating boxes of girl scout cookies instead (literally no ragerts, but really)? What have I been afraid to actually take on? The little voice in my head always told me actions are what matter most; how you “feel” comes and goes in waves that ultimately it doesn’t even matter. I was so wrong, it’s actually quite insane how connected all parts of our being is. It’s synched in an amount of facets that still blow my mind when I see how my life is playing out. I had to realize I was never going to be happy with myself, not only because I wanted what was looking back in the mirror to be what I “envision” for myself; but because I wanted to become the better version of myself as a whole. Yes, being healthy is a MAJOR part of my dream self; but being calm, being in the little moments, wanting/ needing less, simplifying a crazy chaotic brain, understanding I can make mistakes, understanding the mistakes I do make sometimes take wayyyyy longer than I want to fix, being okay with not being okay, letting someone see the dark part of myself..the self I’m ashamed of, letting someone love those parts of me, opening up to more people about the real shit we go through, not that phony ass “omg my life is so great, I’m working on xyz, blah blah” but the, I woke up today not feeling like I had intention, or today I felt the sun shine a while longer and it made me realize the comfort I get from the slow seconds in the day. The perfect people can suck a dick, because it’s not fucking real. The bullshit the world has fed you, is toxic af. I’m a little sad it took most of my 20-somethings to figure this out. But when you lie to yourself about who you are, the people that are surrounding you are also liars. Big fat ones. I had to loose myself completely, and rebuild who I wanted to be, someone that I could admire ya know? I envy the people who get to start off life knowing exactly who and what they are destined to do. They make all of the right moves to get them to the places they want to be. I never worked that way, it was try this, hit a wall, sign up for this, fail, get up, jump, fall. Anyways, I definitely went on a bit of a tangent with this one. All in all, I’ve come to the huge happy hug of acceptance, and love. OF COURSE years of hating yourself take lots of practice, that sadly one motivational tik-toc, can’t erase. BUT the journey is kinda messy, and kinda fun, and super chaotic. I’m meeting the people that are meant to be in my life for the long run, I’m making the choices that are making me healthy, I’m taking better care of my soul, and my body. The process is new, but I’m taking it head on. -Zae

You woke up to the sound of your alarm, before promptly turning it off and bringing a hand to rub at your tired eyes. The moment you made a move to get out of bed you registered the soreness of your throat and a headache sneaking up on you, and you knew you were doomed.

You had caught the flu.

Worst thing is, it was all because of Hyunjin’s irresponsible self. He had showed up to dance practice utterly sick, and even though you guys basically forced him to take it easy and sit in the sidelines rather than dance, he was still there. Contaminating the air with his germs. Who even goes to dance practice knowing their body isn't up for dancing? Hwang Hyunjin the perfectionist, that's who.

So, with the looming promise of a headache and probably many other symptoms, you were going to have to sacrifice your day, as you knew better than to attend class with the flu. You stood up and, trying to ignore the sharp pain in your head, walked towards your bag, digging in for some painkillers before things got worse. You took them with some water you had on your desk and headed back to your bed so you could lay down, letting out an audible groan in the process.

You weren't really planning on moving around much that day.

You had closed your eyes and started wondering if you could maybe fall asleep again when you heard a knock on your door.

"Come in," you grumbled, pulling the covers up to your chin.

You heard the door opening, followed by Felix's low voice. "Hey, shouldn't you be getting ready?"

Your only response was to groan again, dragging the covers even higher so they would cover your head. This caused Felix to raise an eyebrow in curiosity, and to take a few steps towards  your bed.

"Is everything okay?" he inquired.

Accepting the fact that you needed to use words to actually communicate, you peeked over the comforter to meet his eyes. "I think I'm sick, and it's probably Hyunjin's fault," you muttered. "I'll stay in bed today so I can get better quicker."

Felix let out a small "oh" at that, and reached to feel your forehead with his hand.

"Y/n, you have a fever!" he said in a scolding manner. "Yeah, you're definitely staying home. Luckily for you, I only have two morning classes today and then I'm free, so I'll be back soon to take care of you," he said with a smile.

"Oh, you don't really have to do that, I can manage by myself."

"I know that, but I also know that being sick with the flu isn't fun," he said, walking towards the direction of your door.

A thought hit you before Felix could leave your room. "Hey, how come you aren't sick? You were exposed to Hyunjin as much as I was during dance practice."

Felix stopped for a moment and then turned to look back at you, a playful grin adorning his face. "Guess my immune system actually loves me, unlike yours."

You rolled your eyes. "Get out of my room so I can suffer in peace," you said while doing a shooing motion with your hand.

He closed the door behind him and you could hear a muffled laugh coming from the outside.

You were grateful you decided to stay in bed, because with the pass of time you started to feel worse. You had only gotten up to use the bathroom and to eat some breakfast, even if you weren't really feeling up to it.

Felix was right, being sick is very boring. The only thing you had done all morning was watch Netflix and mope over your sick self, because you were sure that trying to get some studying done wouldn't be the best idea when your head was bothering you this much.

It was nearing lunch time and you knew that Felix would be back soon, so you decided to text him.

you (13:18 pm): hey can u pls buy some tissues on the way

lix (13:19 pm): didn't we have an unopened box in the bathroom closet?

you (13:19 pm): ... I used them all

lix (13:20 pm): ...

lix (13:20 pm): okay, I'll be back soon u dork

you (13:21 pm): thank u!!! see u!!!

You locked your phone and left it on your bedside table, shifting your concentration back to the show playing on your TV.

Some time later you heard the distant sound of the front door being opened, and after a few seconds Felix entered your room with bags in his hands.

"I come bearing gifts," he announced as he plopped down the bags on your bed, and started taking the items out one by one. "I got you more boxes of tissues and some medicine, and I hope you're hungry because I got us food," he said while handing you a takeout box. "Oh, and some ice cream."

"You're an angel," you said while sitting up from your previously laying down position.

"Of course I am," he said playfully, putting down the bag on the floor. "Now scoot over, what are we watching?"

You ignored his question and shot him a wary look. "Aren't you worried you'll get sick too?"

"At this point I probably already am, so it's not going to stop me from cuddling you. Now scoot."

You did as he said, careful as to not drop the food, and he laid down next to you. After pressing the play button to resume your show, you both started digging in for the food.

This was one of the best things of being roommates with Felix, you thought. You had someone who would always be there for you, whether you were sick, bored, or just felt like hanging out with someone. When you watched any show together, he always provided side comments that made it a hundred percent better, the both of you cracking up all the time.

(except when you watched a horror movie together, which basically consisted of Felix clinging onto you like his life depended on it, and you trying to calm him down.)

When you ran out of food, Felix stood up to leave the empty containers in the kitchen. He came back after a few moments, plopping down next to you again.

"How are you feeling?" he asked.

"A bit better, my head is still hurting though." You pouted in his direction.

"Well, that desperately calls for cuddles, so come here." He opened his arms in a welcoming manner, and you wasted no time in getting closer to him and resting your head on his chest. His arms wrapped around your form, but after a few seconds he brought a hand up to run through your hair in a soothing way.

With the sound of the TV fading in the background, the only thing you could focus on was the way Felix's chest softly moved up and down because of his breathing and the sensation of his fingers on your head. That way you slowly started falling asleep, forgetting about any pain you had and just enjoying the company of the boy beside you.

with this year coming to a close and a new one just around the corner -- i want to gave some insight to new things that will be coming to my blog at the start of the year

before diving in, i want to thank everyone who’s stuck around! this year was a bit of a whirlwind for me and i truly appreciate you all for everything you’ve done! and now that i’m on my last leg of university -- and more time has opened up, i’m ready to start doing more things with you all!

Xavier Morales. Diamond’s very loyal bodyguard slash driver, and one of the people she trusts the most with her secrets. The man’s been with her for three years and she’s come to see him as an older brother, and a very good friend. The two often have very lengthy and deep talks when they’re in the car together, or seated next to each other on a plane. He literally goes wherever she goes, and is always willing to be there when she calls or needs a ride. Technically, he was hired as her driver but quickly became one of her main bodyguards.

☺ : What is your muse’s smile like? Do they smile often?

Zae (Ava romancer): sunny and warm! their face claim is Ruth Negga and I’ve always thought her smile is absolutely lovely, so Zae gets a pretty smile as well. they smile pretty frequently and it warms my heart. Violca (Morgan romancer): very sweet looking, but almost always uses only half of her mouth for it. also a fairly frequent smiler. Khalilah (Farah romancer): positively adorable and usually accompanied with a giggle. she’s on the serious and stoic side so it doesn’t happen a lot, though, which makes it sweeter when it does (usually when Farah does something silly to make her laugh). Trish (Nat romancer): usually looks kind of smug. lol. she’s kind of preoccupied with looking aloof and cool even when she’s in a good mood, but she shows her genuine, open-mouthed smile whenever she’s with Unit Bravo, Tina, or her mom.

⚠ : How does your muse react to possibly dangerous situations? Do they face them head-on, or do they plan out their actions first?

Zae: tries to talk their way out of it, firstly. they’re a bit more on the impulsive side for high stress situations, but they dislike that about themself and try to plan things through better. will generally always try to create peace first though, and really hates having to fight. Violca: internally tells herself to shut up, stay calm, and think. generally good at detaching herself from the situation and mentally planning things out (as befitting the knowledge/deduction MC). Khalilah: same boat as Violca, but a lot more easily scared than she is. usually refuses to go into things without a plan, and can flounder a bit if she has to stray from said plan for any reason. Trish: wings it, usually. gets angry if she’s in danger, or somebody else she loves is in danger, and is ready to throw down to keep people safe.

🏨  : How well does your muse sleep?

Zae: they were prone to insomnia even before the Murphy thing happened. after Murphy? it’s not great. they do their best with sleep supplements and white noise, but it’s definitely an uphill battle. Violca: has the longest process of getting ready for bed, on account of her prosthetic. also a bit of a restless sleeper, but only Verda and Tina are aware of it. Khalilah: generally pretty well, but the incident with Murphy has given her her own share of restlessness. the events of book 2 have added to it as well, even if that arguably ended better for everyone involved. Trish: heavy sleeper who’s out for the night once she goes to bed, but struggles to get there. she drinks a lot of caffeine and doesn’t like to be alone with her thoughts.

εїз : How does your muse feel about bugs and insects?

Zae: they are so scared of bugs and insects. they have the messy apartment. please free them.  Violca: mostly indifferent. I imagine she was the one rolling her eyes and putting them in a cup to take them outside while Bobby was freaking a bit when they were still together. Khalilah: thinks that they’re very cute, lol. she would’ve been one of those kids with an ant farm growing up, and possibly has an insect terrarium as an adult. Trish: also largely indifferent and raises her eyebrow at people who freak out at them. “it’s so tiny? why do you care?”

so, this year’s been super tough, but i’ve grown and learned a lot and i’m really happy with how far i’ve come. i look forward to moving ahead in the new year, seeing just how much further i’ll go, and getting so many more chances to love all my friends, make new ones, learn and grow alongside everyone. life sure is tough but, it’s thanks to all the fun and kind and wonderful people in this world that help make it worth living and exciting! thanks for sticking around with me for so long, and i wish all of you a happy new year!!

1. I’m pretty sure I have massive amounts of unchecked rage and repressed emotions locked behind a kind attitude and shy demeanor that has managed to lead people to label me as,��‘The Quiet One’. I’m probably due for a meltdown or just a long ugly cry. Stay tuned.

2. I studied Fine Arts in college and university but still can’t draw or paint to save my life. Well, I guess I can but when some would ask, WTF is that? I say, it’s ‘abstract’ then nod affirmatively and add under my breath, “hmm. Indeed.” then stare off  like any self respecting artist would. Art is still life though.

3. I play video games for a living. It’s not as glamorous as you think but does have its perks and I enjoy it for the most part. Unfortunately, no. I can’t ‘hook you up’.

4. I’m Asian. However, I’m lazy by nature and have a PhD in procrastination. I am my own dilemma.

5. I used to work at the airport and Ikea. No relation other than I’m familiar with loading things into things.

6. I’m Canadian. I understand French but as for speaking it, its a work in progress. Salut à tous les Montréalais/e out there, big yourselves up! No. I dont play hockey or live in an igloo, but my neighbor’s polar bear is pretty nice.

7. I  hate the number 892,342,956. It knows why.

8. I like animals, but never owned one. Maybe one day. However, I’ll never own or collect insects or understand why someone would do so willingly. Looking at you @rainbowreaper214 :)

9. I keep my sanity intact by consuming the 4 basic food groups of movies, anime, playing video games and reading comics. I have a huge backlog in each of those categories. Hit me up anytime if anyone wants to chat about it.

Report via TMZ -- The crew believed to be responsible for attacking and robbing YBN Almighty Jay and sending him to the hospital are in federal custody, but strangely ... it has nothing to do with the rapper. Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... cops have identified a street gang that includes Zae Numbafive as persons of interest in last weekend's assault on Jay. We're told the crew goes by the name "Jack Boyz." Zae and 3 other Jack Boyz members were arrested Wednesday in the Bronx as part of an unrelated federal investigation ... which is even crazier. The men are facing a charge of attempted murder in the aid of racketeering -- along with firearm charges -- in connection with the shooting of an off-duty NYPD officer. Another member remains at large. If convicted, they face up to life in prison. Our sources say the crew was questioned by investigators after their arrest about assaulting Jay as well, and 2 members admitted to being at the scene ... but didn't fess up to any criminal activity. We're told one of the Boyz also claimed to have past issues with Jay but said they worked it out ... but the rapper denied even knowing the crew. Ft/ Roman Reigns

"Where we going?"

 Glancing in my rear view mirror, I smiled at my three year old daughter, Zaleigh. Her eyes were on, Ellie, her elephant build a bear, a wide smile stretched across her face. Usually her hair would be hanging in her face but for the occasion, I pulled her unruly black curls back into a bun. Having her hair out of her face showcased her deep dimples and light hazel eyes. Everyone would say she looked like my twin but it was only the dimples, other than that we have nothing in common.

 "You remember I told you we were gonna see some of our family today?" I asked her putting my focus back on the road ahead of me.

 "Mmhmm. With the pool, mommy?"

 "Yep, Zae."

 She didn't ask any more questions, she put all of her focus back on Ellie.

 This was our first time back in Florida since Zaleigh was about nine months old. Her daddy moved us up to Kansas. He said it was for the betterment of our family but that wasn't it at all. It's been the longest years of my life without physical contact with my parents, other family and friends. But we're back now, that's what matters.

 Zaleigh's excitement had turned into nervousness after I had taken her out of the car. Usually she would opt to walk, or run, instead she begged me to pick her up and clung tightly too me when I did. There were so many cars parked in front of my parents' house, I realized they probably called all the family we have here and more. I could smell food from the grill and hear the laughing and talking that was going on in the backyard.

 Figuring no one would hear the doorbell, I walked us over to the tall, beige picket fence and opened it.

 Familiar faces of my cousins were the first people I saw. They hugged me and attempted to talk to Zaleigh but she was having none of it. Laughing it off, I told them to give her a little time in a few minutes she would be ready to talk. Walking quickly through the throng of guests, I made my way to my mom, who was sitting in a lawn chair with two women siting opposite her in lawn chairs as well. I approached her with a big smile feeling tears fill my eyes.

 "Mama." I called out catching her attention.

 Without any words, she jumped up and wrapped her arms around me and Zae. In response to the contact, Zaleigh wiggled around to see who it was. Her eyes lit up.

 "Nana!" Zae squealed holding arms out to her.

 Even though, Zae hadn't seen her grandparents in the flesh in years I was still able to FaceTime with them so they had a relationship. Happily, my mom took her from me squeezing her gently and placed kisses on the side of her face.

 "Is that PopPop's angel?"

 My dad marched right over to us smiling and holding his arms out for Zaleigh. My mom passed her to him then wiped the happy tears from her cheeks. Daddy kissed my forehead before walking away with Zaleigh.

 "My babies are finally back," Mama squealed pulling me back to the ladies she was talking to.

 "Oh, Melanie, you remember Patricia and Morgan?" She asked me as she pulled me to sit beside her.

 I nodded greeting them politely. Morgan is my mom's best friend from high school and my godmother. And Patricia is my mom's other best friend who has lived beside us my whole life. Her, her husband and their four kids. We all grew up together, her youngest son and I were best friends until I left for Kansas. I haven’t talked to or seen him in person in years.

 "Is that your baby? She's so big."

 "Yep, that's my baby, Ms. Patricia," I laughed looking over at her and my dad. "She turned three on Christmas Eve."

 "She is so pretty. She clearly got it from her mom."

 Before I could tell Ms. Patricia thank you, my mom butted in playfully telling her that Zae got her good looks from her. The compliment made me feel a little better. Back in Kansas the only thing people ever said was how she didn’t look like me at all and only a little like her father.

 “I think she looks like someone but I can’t put my finger on it,” Morgan added looking lost in thought.

My mom gave her a certain look then smiled at me again, pushing me towards the back door. "Go inside and bring those other plates out, Melly."

Mama sending me inside meant there was something she wanted to say that she didn't want me to hear. It was probably about Zaleigh's dad. I'm just not sure what else there is to say about him that she hadn't already. If that’s what she was going to talk about.

 I searched and searched the walk-in pantry for the plates but I didn't see them.

 "I didn’t think you were really here."

 Jumping from the voice, I turned to face them clutching my chest. I was going to yell at them until I realized who it was.

"You need a freaking bell, Joe."

 He laughed stepping inside the pantry away from the doorframe.

 "And you gotta stop being so scary, Melly. You act like something was gonna jump out at you."

 "This is why I never liked you."

 Him and I smiled at each other as he closed the gap between us and pulled me into a hug. He smelled as good as I remembered. He towered over me in the hug but I don’t mind. It’s always been like this through our friendship. Cheek to chest.

 "It's been a long time," He whispered still holding onto me.

 I nodded trying to pull away from the hug.

 "Not yet. Just let me hold on to you a little longer so I know I'm dreaming."

 He must have find out about what happened between Zaleigh's dad and I. I wouldn't be surprised if everyone in the backyard knew. Nevertheless, I stood in his embrace holding onto his waist. I'm glad to be back with my family and friends.

Joe and I ended up siting in the kitchen, at the breakfast bar, talking and joking around. We connected like we never left one another.

 "I can't believe you." I laughed reaching over to hit his shoulder.

 "I swear that's what happened," He said holding his hands up a if he was praying, "You can ask my brother."

 As he continued on with his story, I couldn't help but admire him a little. He looked a lot different since the last time I saw him. Longer hair, leaner, a lot more built and a full beard. I always thought he was handsome and is even more true now.

 "Mommy! Mommy!"

 Zaleigh ran through the backdoor straight for me giggling as she came over. Scooping her up in my lap, I kissed her cheek and brushed hair from her face.

 "Baby! Baby!" I squealed back at her.

 She bounced in my lap happily. "Can we stay here?"

 "I dunno, Zae. I kind of wanted to stay at our house tonight," I told her avoiding her puppy dog eyes, "Don't you wanna stay in your new room?"

 And here comes the pouting. I swear I hated when she pouted. It was something she did with her father all the time. Whenever she pouted, cried or even looked pitiful he would give in to whatever she wanted. He may not have been good a person to anyone but he was to Zaleigh for a while. That was all that mattered to me.

  "No. Wanna stay here. You go.”

  Narrowing my eyes at her, I gave her my best mom face. To be honest I’m still perfecting it, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. Once she decided to look away, I moved my attention to Roman who was smiling at us.

  “You should let her stay.”

  Zaleigh jumped at the sound of his voice. She turned in my lap to face him, her once pouty face now shifted into a smiling face. It was because she knew she was about to get her way.

  “Oh, no!” I said catching his attention. “You will not spoil her too. Her father and my parents have done enough.”

  “Not my daddy,” Zaleigh mumbled lying her head back on my chest. Joe and I locked eyes after she said until I looked away. “Just let her stay, Mel. You and I can do some catching up.” After all was said, him and I just stared until he grinned at me wiggling his brows. The wiggle had made Zaleigh laugh but it was the grin that got me. That damn boyish grin, it made him look so innocent but I knew better. That grin has gotten me in a lot of trouble in the years that I’ve known him.  

  Joe held his arms out to Zaleigh and surprisingly she reached out for him. As much as she talks, she can be super shy so with this being her first time seeing him, that she remembers, and she goes to him is shocking to me. She made herself comfortable in his lap facing me. Joe held her tiny hands in his larger ones and leaned down so he could talk to her.

  “If you wanna stay you gotta smile at your mommy, Princess,” he semi-whispered looking down at her. “No sad face?” The genuinely confused face made the both of us laugh. She is a character. “Nah. See mommy can’t turn down a smile.” Zaleigh seemed to be pondering it for a second, looking back and forth between Joe and I. She squinted her eyes and sighed, “How you know?”

  “Cause I’m mommy’s bestest friend,” he told her smiling over at me. My cheeks started to heat up and hurt from the big smile on my face. “Mommy best friend a girl.” Joe laughed taking a second to smooth his hand over his hair. “I’m her real best friend.”

  “Whats your name?”

  “Joe, Princess.”

  “Ace,” she squealed moving to throw her arms around his neck. With a confused look on his face he hugged her back and gave me a crazy look. All I could do was laugh, it was what I used to call him when we were kids. My mom told her about him a few times before. He hadn’t heard it in years I’m sure. “That’s me,” he said pulling away, “Now come on. Let’s smile at mommy and ask her really nicely.” They mushed their cheeks together and smiled, making me giggle. They looked absolutely ridiculous.

  “Can I stay, mommy? Peaaaase??”

  “Yeah, Mommy,” Joe added, “Peaaaase.”

  Staring at them, I tried to keep a straight face but failed miserably. When I fell into a fit of laughter Joe told her that was yes and to go tell her grandparents that she was staying. “You know she’s gonna expect you to rescue her like that all the time right?” I asked standing from my seat. “That’s alright with me. As long as I can rescue her mama, too.” Joe dropped his voice, something he did when he flirted. Some things never changed.

  “You’re my best friend, remember,” I asked.

  “For all intents and purposes, you’re right,” he shrugged pulling me to stand between his legs, “But there were times when we weren’t. Yeah?”

  “I don’t recall.”

  “We’ve got some time to go down memory lane.”

  “I’m a married woman, Joe. You should not be flirting with me.” I put my naked ring finger in his face making him laugh. Grasping it, he placed a kiss to where my ring should have gone.

  “I have reason to believe that you’re not married. And my sources never lie.”

  Slipping my hand from his grasp, I stepped away from her backing up to the back door. “We should get back out there before they send a search party.”

  “You’re right but we’ve gotta leave at some point. Right?”
