I just finished reading a book that really frustrated me and sometimes during reading characters behavior made me want to throw this book out...and every time they made something really annoying one of my first thoughts was “That would never happen in Fitzsimmons AU...”.🤷🏼‍♀️So yeah tomorrow I will stick to FS fics 🖤

I wish I could watch “Christmas at the Plaza” tonight but hopefully I will see it in nearby future :). Rom-com with lovely Liz is all I need <3.

the good

I guess I want to start with the good stuff. I really liked how the movie focused on GIselle and Morgan as stepmother and daughter, but also two people that really need each other. The first movie was about Robert and Giselle and I really feel like there wasn’t much more development there. So I wasn’t upset that Robert got sidelined (hes also kind of the most boring character outside of his role in Enchanted, sorry McDreamy).

The first half of the movie was a bit, too much. But the second half is where I really started to enjoy it.

Obviously the costumes and set design were incredible. Amy Adams was going for an Oscar with her Jekyll and Hyde Giselle moment. The way her voice dropped to be evil, need I say more?

The story was enjoyable! The call backs felt a little forced, but still cute. The songs were... disney Decsendents level if I’m being honest. And i dont even mean that in a bad way its just, a grown ass woman singing them was a bit secondhand embarrassing.

also, james mardsen, as always, is an absolute delight

the not so great

My issues were with how over complicated the plot was. Enchanted was sooo good because of how simple it was, while also being very smart. It’s a fairy tale turned on its head and it’s clever. Disenchanted isn’t. Really clever? The eising wand felt a bit too convient. The pacing is too fast to really dwell on the issues the characters are having. 

And speaking of issues, there are too many lmaoo. Giselle and Morgan are both struggling to find their place. A cartoon-turned real girl feeling out of place and a teenager moving to a new town. There was a lot of potential. Unfortunately, they kinda just turned Giselle into a selfish stay-at-home mom (also, was the baby really important??? what happened to her fashion business). Giselle’s character struggles to stay cartoonish and real, which is ironic because that’s her whole deal. It’s been like 10 years since she started living in New York, how has she somehow went backwards in her character development. 

imo, the movie should have been more about Giselle losing that fairytale touch while dealing with the very real and complex emotions of being a new mom and stepmom. Maybe she woke up one day and realized how different she’s become. But no, its just this weirdly selfish need to move to suburbia. Also she’s a stay at home mom beefing with pta moms for some reason. Everything feels so half-baked, which is interesting since they did do reshoots due to inital mixed reviews

Speaking of pta moms, they really built up the whole prince and princess of the festival thing for no reason other than giselle setting up that, quite frankly, cringe worthy cupcake stand at the highschool. and for morgan’s extremely bland love interest. 

I guess my biggest problem was how it compared to Enchanted. I’m sure, on it’s own, DIsenchanted is a great movie. But Enchanted was about Robert and Giselle breaking each other out of their monotonous, monochromatic lives. Giselle learns to be more Real, while Robert learns to embrace spontaneity. Disenchanted feels a lot like Giselle trying to play both roles, with Robert doing absolutely nothing. I said earlier how I actually like Robert being put to the side, but it is frustrating how Robert didn’t notice Giselle strugging at all. He does not to help her. imo, the minute he saw her acting evil should have broke the spell or at least pushed through a little and made him concerned. He has big “ignorant dad in a sitcom” energy, which sucks.

the bad

okay im not film expert, nor am i a choreographer, but man, was I the only one that felt disappointed by the music and spontaneious dance sequences. The town square scene and inital scene with morgan and robert singing were probably the best because of how silly and self-indulgent they were. They felt like they wuld fit in Enchanted, which, again, is funny since the song is literally a reference to the first movie.

But some of the sequence felt like I was being danced at? Like these two 40 year old women were doing well choreographer tiktok dances at me. It took me out of the movie so quickly and I struggled to enjoy it. I really wanted to enjoy Badder, but the second half of the song just felt weird. Like they were hoping for a tiktok banger or something. But yeah, Enchanted may have only had 4 songs, only 2 of which were sung by main characters, but they’re all bangers. What Disenchanted makes up for in songs, it lacks in quality.

Sorry super busy with the festival and work but yeah… idk. I am going to try to be as spoiler free as I can. Also I hope you actually get this because it’s gonna be long and I’m on mobile rn! The film as a whole was enjoyable and I thought the storyline was interesting, but I do think Harry’s performance was lacking. Overall he did a fine job, and his physical acting was good, but some of the line deliveries were… bland and very “I’m-just-learning-how-to-act”. He was just reciting the lines not actually putting proper intonation behind them. I think he could improve and do better in future roles (hopefully / maybe). His character is very much a himbo, and while I get why Patrick falls for him, I actually don’t get why Marion does aside from Tom is pretty. But that could be because we get to hear Patrick’s internal monologue. The film does do a good job and showing how all these characters are flawed and products of their time, so I think in that sense it was quite well. And as Harry mentioned I do see how they showcase the parts of ourselves we don’t always like. Really my biggest issue with the film is Harry’s acting. I think it’s also more noticeable because the rest of the cast was very strong. Linus Roache as the older Tom did an excellent job showing the bitterness, resentfulness and pain of a what that character would be feeling in the later timeline after going through his whole life, which really juxtaposes with H’s performance. I was sitting next to a press person and me and the girl (also industry) next to me where talking about the fact that we were disappointed in H’s performance and the press lady quietly laughed (rude but oh well) and while she couldn’t agree with us out loud we could tell she was like… yeah I’m definitely talking about his performance in my article. Also unrelated but apparently she had been promised a ticket for in conversation with Taylor Swift and then they took it away. So I just want to point out how much of a mess TIFF has been with tickets this year (and every year) because all of us industry people were complaining too! Now to talk about the actual conference part. I wish the moderator had asked Michael Grandage more questions as the director of the film but that’s coming from me being in the industry and wanting to hear from the filmmakers. I get marketing wise people care more about the actors. We were all also a bit disappointed that we couldn’t ask questions since in other TIFF screenings you often can but this was being recorded and showcased live so it wasn’t for us in the theatre. I did think Harry did a much better job talking about this film that what I saw him saying in Venice for DWD. You can tell he did care about this story a lot. He definitely put lots of thought into it. (Or they talked to him after Venice haha). He was a sweetheart and even blew a kiss to one of the people in the front row (I really wish I had moved closer once the film ended but I didn’t want to be craning my neck during the actual film so I had sat in the middle of the theatre). He definitely was looking at us in the audience though and subtly interacting. It’s funny though because they did ask for us to stay in our seats during the press conference and a bunch of people not only left when the film ended but also midway through the press conference. It does always happen but it is still always rude and bothers me. Don’t come to a screening where the filmmakers are going to be talking afterwards if you can’t stay! Oh and some poor person’s phone went off in the middle which my friend told you could be heard in the live stream lol. Anyways there’s my opinion and experience - E

I love Maki so much, it’s actually her story line with Mai that got me actually invested into jjk. Like before that i was liking it but when i read that i was like OWO I NEED MORE NOW. I just love like....normal siblings storylines, like legit ask me about Choso i love Choso so much for this exact reason but we are talking about Maki now. I love how her background with Mai is very complicated and you can’t really call one or the other right. Like of course Maki has every right to leave an abusive household on her own terms and Mai has no excuses in wanting her to stay in said abusive household just so they can be together but you can also understand how abandoned and thrown away Mai would have felt at that moment. Like sure theyd probs treat her a little better then Maki because she can actually see curses but they also still clearly treated her badly and as a servant because her technique is weak. You can understand how she would have felt betrayed by being left behind by the only person who should have been on her side in this horrible situation. I just really love Maki and Mai and by god i hope they get to met again and talk and work together MAKI AND MAI TEAM UP PLEASE. I’m not sure can their relationship ever be really good i feel like there's a lot there to work through but i also really want them to start working through it. Aside from that I just love her cuz shes Maki and she’s a badass. I love women who are so fucking driven and ready to fight their way to the top when the world has given them crappy cards. She’s a fighter and she’s a survivor. She’s made from tough stuff, she has survived being fuckin set on fire. I LOVE her redesign its so fuckin good like holy shit i already thought she was cool but now she looks like 10 times cooler the cape the fuckin cape. Anyway i like her a whole bunch i hope her and megumi work something out about the zenin clan and id also like to see more of her thoughts from her about that whole situation. Because she’s not able to prove herself and win over the clan like she wanted to :(. But i guess that doesnt really matter anymore with the whole situation going on. She has already proven herself to be tougher then Naobito and by god i hope she puts Naoya into the ground, actually i hope this is where her and Mai will team up and put him into the ground together.

I also really love Yuuta, like he has the same soft boy protag vibes as Yuji but he also looks fucking depressed and anxious 90% of the time which just makes it all the better??? Like i love Yuji, but Yuuta has been through so much shit, he’s been terrorized by a curse of his own making for years, Rika had probably hurt a bunch of people because of him and like you can see it in his face, that dudes a wreck, have you see his fucking eyebags he hasnt slept in 25927 years and i love him so much. He’s so kind and caring and god if i dont love characters who go absolutely stupid feral for their friends. When the fanbook came out and it was like his biggest stress atm is not being with his friends i was like ;-;. I’m just a sap, I love him, I love how much he has progressed from this anxious stressed out kid to someone who can act calmly and tactically and even offer valuable advice to his underclassmen, he has grown so much! It’s just nice to see him coming into his own and becoming more confident into himself and his power. I’m really fucking sad hes gonna be separated from the squad again after JUST saying he doesnt want to be away from everyone again. Anyway his oscar worthy performance in Shibuya really fuckin got me like, the whole time i was thinking ‘noooo Yuuta wouldnt do this nooo its gojos student they are basically step brothers by teacher he wouldnt do this’ BUT i wasnt sure! I still felt like him becoming all fuckin feral for his friend was perfectly in character and also like really thematically interesting from the stand point of two protagonists clashing together. But honestly im glad he was just putting on an act, idk would my heart be able to handle villain Yuuta for long ;-; Another thing I like about Yuuta is Rika, like man I LOVE Rika, half of my upcoming curse!Gojo au is based on what Yuuta and Rika are. I was SO fuckin hyped to see her return like I was as hyped for Rika’s return as I was for Yuutas. Sure we don’t know if that’s ACTUALLY Rika or something else but god I hope we find out soon. Anyway I absolutely LOVE Yuuta’s n Rika’s dynamic like im feral for this shit. 1. Big monster girlfriend and smol human boyfriend 2. Master and servant allusions 3. THEY ARE AN ACTUAL PARTNERSHIP. Like sure Yuuta is in control but Rika is the one lending him her power and basically agreeing to play along, he needs to earn the strength to wield her. Like they aren’t on completely equal terms and boy would I love if they were cuz completely equal curse sorcerer partnership would be so! Cool! But they are the closest thing to that. Like she isn’t a shikigami like Megumi has or anything like that, her and Yuuta feel like actual partners who depend on each other’s strengths and cover each other’s weaknesses and I DIG THAT SHIT SO MUCH. Would I have loved if they developed a truly equal partnership and that Rika didn’t have to go? Yes. Am I happy with what I got? Also yes. Yuuta monsterfucker king. That whole ‘This is true love’ bit, amazing I love him.

 Panda is the only second year I don’t passionately love ajkkjbj sorry Panda but you’re just Panda. Like I like him, I like the concept of him, I like how he obviously sees himself as not the same as the humans and doesn’t really understand them and I would love to see him explored more, his third core, his relationship with Yaga who’s basically his dad, his relationship with other sorcerers, but I’m not feral about him like I’m about Maki and Yuuta. I think he’s a neat character and a funny joke and I love when he and Toge interact they are prank bros its cute. But that’s p much all I feel about him hjvbjhbj sorry Panda

personally, the only superhero shows i feel is worthy of any oscar or emmy buzz is doom patrol and into the spider-verse. im so sorry. i know people are willing to fight their mom for the mcu, but mcu films really don’t have the range to be nominated for any awards other than costume design or visual effects because there's more heart put into that than their own characters or story. maybe if the mcu didn’t have the budget to make their films as distracting as ever, people would actually realize how horrible their films are. like, what allegories do they even have? what issues do they deal with that everyday people can relate to? not saying this to be mean or anything but there are literally so many other movies that feature heroes/super powers that are far more inspiring and motivational than anything the mcu can produce.

As for your actual question - that’s some truly excellent and interesting timing, considering that I rewatched BoRhap (with @incblackbird) literally three days ago. :P It was already my third rewatch, and while I enjoyed the movie overall, I liked it quite significantly less than upon the last time I saw it. Of course, there’s been gazillion discourses about BoRhap, whether it’s genius, extremely evil, etc., but since it’s such a broad topic (and I think some of my opinions could potentially outrage certain parts of the fandom), this time I’m going to stick to purely cinematic terms.

Needless to say, the soundtrack is excellent - with music such as Queen’s you don’t really have to do much, but they made a good choice of songs, alternating between their best known hits (We Will Rock You, Somebody to Love, Bohemian Rhapsody) and songs to fit the narrative (Doing All Right, Now I’m Here, Who Wants to Live Forever, Love of my Life). It’s practically impossible to leave the screening of BoRhap without at least one Queen song stuck in your head.

The cast was overall very good, too. My personal favourites in terms of acting were Gwilym Lee (who I liked even more than Rami), Rami Malek, Lucy Boynton and Allen Leech - I think they did a great job with their roles as they were written (whether their characters were well written or not is a subject for a whole another discussion). All the side characters were well acted, too (Mike Myers, Meneka Das and Aaron McCusker, for instance, I found particularly memorable), but I must admit I wasn’t a big fan of Joe Mazzello and Ben Hardy, but even they weren’t bad. So, acting is definitely one of the strongest points of the film.

Moving on, I also think they did a great job when it comes to costumes (Brian lending some of his old clothing definitely helped) and make-up (except for Roger’s wigs, perhaps); the choreography and stage movement for the characters were super well done, too - and it definitely wasn’t an easy task!

Now, let’s discuss cinematography. I will talk about editing in a separate paragraph, so for now I’m gonna stick to other aspects. The composition of shots struck me as rather mediocre, nothing particularly exceptional in either good or bad way, it was pretty basic but rather correct. Of course, there were some shots I really liked, but if I were to start adding screenshots the post would become way too long. XD The colours I really liked, especially in the musical scenes - they were vivid and lovely, and they used a combination of colours that I tend to appreciate in cinema, like various shades of blue and red. Finally, the camerawork - for dialogue scenes it was correct; again, rather average with some use of handheld camera which served no particular dramatic purpose, but it wasn’t nowhere near very bad, also it’s quite a common thing in modern biopics I would say. Handheld camerawork isn’t bad in default, but my comment largely comes from my personal preferences: in most cases I don’t really like it, especially when it’s particularly shaky. Then, there are scenes in BoRhap which display excellent camerawork, namely Live Aid and We Will Rock You scenes. If most scenes were filmed like that, I would give the movie a higher rating.

Before I move to the worst (imo) cinematic aspects of the movie, let’s have a look at writing. It is probably the most divisive thing in the fandom - people seem to either adore or absolutely loathe it; my stance lies somewhere inbetween. The first time I saw the film (I’m gonna remind you that I’ve seen it four times), I had certain objections, but the script didn’t bother me all that much; I was mostly simply having fun in the cinema. With every next watching, the experience was getting gradually worse, but even now I don’t hate the movie. Yes, some of the dialogue is cheesy, trite and makes me cringe a bit - certain parts of the script definitely end on an “overly sentimental” territory, I can’t deny that. Knowing quite a lot about Freddie, Queen and their stories, I generally think they deserve a better script; some characterisation was a bit offputting and chronology was all over the place. Having said that, I understand where some of those narrative choices come from, as scripts for mainstream movies require oversimplification of events, archetypes, and patterns. And quite frankly, I don’t think BoRhap differs any drastically from most modern biopics; it’s not a masterpiece, but - in my opinion - it’s also not bad overall. Regardless the flaws of the script, the movie still managed to emotionally affect a huge, if not major, portion of viewers, entertain and move them, and honestly? I think that was pretty much the point. Btw, there were some lines that I really loved, like “Puritans in public, perverts in private”, and I still think that their decision to cut from Live Aid performance to Ray Foster’s grim face during We Are the Champions was the funniest shit ever. XD Would BoRhap’s script benefit from sticking to historical accuracy? I’m gonna say yes, I think so - the scenes that were the closest to actual events are definitely the strongest - but this approach would require tons of changes, including narrowing down the narrative scope and probably the characters, too. Also, a lot of people keep forgetting that this is not an arthouse, niche film and therefore resorts to narrative and cinematic choice that compromise between satisfying the fans and the newbies; it’s meant to tell a (simple) story and entertain, not educate and provoke existential and philosophical debates. Still, I think the script could have been done a bit better, because some scenes  (the tour “Now I’m Here” montage) feel a bit...random?

Finally, the infamous editing. I totally agree that it was one of the most undeserving Academy Awards that year, because some scenes were simply atrocious, with their unmotivated and overly fast cuts and unreasonably ridiculous face that doesn’t fit the dialogue scenes, and those are honestly the worst when it comes to pacing and editing. I think the editing is the worst aspect of BoRhap; but even here, I could point at some examples of pretty amazing editing (Oscar-worthy? Not necessarily, but definitely very good); again, I’m gonna bring up Live Aid and “We Will Rock You” scenes, especially the latter, because less people talk about it. I already mentioned that it has some really nice camerawork AND colours, but also the editing is actually really cool, because it’s cut to the music! Which makes me think: “what a shame!”, because if they went with different editing choices, the movie would be affected in a positive way. The way we have it, it’s either a hit or miss (sadly, mostly miss), and the badly edited scenes are pretty striking, so the ones that are done nicely are unfortunately a wasted potential.

Okay, this is already waaay too long, so I’m just gonna finish with a few general remarks. Well, despite BoRhap’s flaws, I still like and enjoy it. With every screening slightly less, but enjoy it anyway. I don’t think any amount of discourse will ever take away my positive experiences and memories from seeing it twice in cinema. It sparked my previously dormant love for Queen and united me with some people in the fandom and in real life; making this movie made Brian and Roger happy; as a result, I like this movie. It brings back a lot of positive recollections, which sometimes is more important than critical discussions. And boy, do I adore those - I’m often critical and I adore analysing stuff academically; but I think that not all daily interactions require those and depending on who’s asking and what about, I’m capable of switching between the two options. If somebody asks me in 25 years whether I remember the times of BoRhap’s release, I’ll be far less likely to say “yeah, the editing sucked and writing was cringy, I remember the discourse on tumblr and instagram” than “Yes, I remember that chilly evening in December when I had a really fun time and ended up with 10 Queen songs stuck in my head”, because the latter is the experience I want to remember.

She exploded at the poor waiter, calling him trash and idiotic. He actually started crying.

I haven’t finished his full filmography yet, I’ve pretty much focused on the movies where he’s the main character so here’s my top 3. 1) Le Fidèle (Racer and Jailbird): I’ve been pretty vocal about how much I love this movie but here I am talking about it again. I’m gonna be real honest with you, the beginning might be a bit slow but it’s totally worthy in the end. This movie is a journey, you’ll feel a lot. He’s the main character so he’s in it a lot. His performance is so so so so good I can’t even find the words to describe it. Every single emotion you wanna feel are there.. Happiness, sadness, extreme sadness, and it has miss Adèle Exarchopoulos as the other main character so it was a win win for me. She’s just as good. Honestly I’ve enjoyed this movie so much it might be one of my favorites of his and in general. If you tend to watch reviews I have to tell you, this movie has a lot of bad ones, I personally don’t agree with them lmao but yeah, just a heads up if u wanna look it up first.  2) Rust and Bone: Alright, this movie is so beautiful. Marion Cotillard’s performance is outstanding so is Matthias’. The way this movie was shoot was also very pleasing. There isn’t a single thing about this movie that I didn’t enjoy, it got my attention from the beginning and I’ve never felt bored of it. It’s a bit sad as well but honestly.. In my humble opion of a person who doesn’t know a thing about movies and cinema it deserved an oscar for how beautiful it was.

3) Bullhead: This movie is very very intense and it has a few triggering stuff in it so if you’re not confortable with these things, please avoid it! There’s a big big mention and you can also see it of bullying, drugs and addiction (oh and there’s an explicit s*x scene, that lasts a sec cos it’s just a p**** being showed, but those are there in almost all the movies I’ve ranked so far). Also, there’s a particular scene which is extremely violent. You can’t really see anything but it personally shocked me a bit to the point that I felt like either skip that scene or taking 5 minutes to continue the movie so yeah, anon, I’d say only watch this movie if you’re confortable enough because certain stuff can be pretty triggering and/or being a bit.. I don’t know, extreme I guess, for me that scene was. I ranked Rust and Bone before this one beacuse I liked it more but Matthias’s performance in Bullhead might be my favorite, after le fidèle, he’s sooo into his character you can almost not recognize him. It’s almost mesmerizing. It’s sad, not gonna lie. I feel like I’ve only ranked you sad movies lmao I’m sorry, well Rust & Bone isn’t super sad tbh. Anyway, yeah, beside all of that 10/10 would recommend!

I know you said 3 but I’d like to give you a fourth one which is Fréres Ennemis this one is also triggering in a way, it has mention and graphic of drugs, guns, blood.. So yeah, like I said before be careful. Matthias was born to do these types of movies to be honest, it’s about friendship, betrayal.. Just very good.  I have to say that I’ve yet to watch movies I’m very very interested in which are: The Mustang (Honestly.. Matthias and horses.. I’m in) & A Bigger Splash (It has Dakota Johnson so I’d give it a go beside Matthias’ movies are usually extremely dark and this one isn’t so it’s a nice change lmao).
