Prize Task: The Most Awkward Item For Somebody Else To Take Home

I gotta say that there are some A+ submissions in this one. Bob goes for a pretty baseline political joke which I would describe as uninspired. Sally bringing in balloons creates a fun thing to do on the stage at the end of the episode and I do appreciate that. However, Nish and Mark are the tops here. A bathroom would be harder to get home than a bunch of curry.

This is interesting because "the ground" can mean different things in different contexts. One could imagine a game of "The Floor is Lava" where stepping on the carpet might not feel like it's in the spirit of things.

Alex breaks it down in studio by explaining that it is okay for him to step on the carpet, but when he leaves it he can't return. I think I get the heart of what he's going for, but it's a messy rule. Nish appears to shuffle his feet a bunch of times on the carpet, but Mark is the only one who gets disqualified.

There's another question in whether you measure the maximum distance the coconut ever got from the living room or just where it ended up at the end of the task. It really doesn't feel like Sally got her coconut to the post office in the allotted time (especially since it couldn't travel by car).

Furthermore, Alex said Aisling got it further than Bob but for some reason Bob got 4 points.

All this said, there are so many problems here that I think I have two choices: (1) Defer to the original scoring. (2) Completely discredit the task. Seeing as this task never seemed particularly controversial, I'll defer to the original scoring but switch Bob and Aisling.

VT 02: Create the best graph.

I'll fill his boat with piss.

What constitutes the best graph? The most important factors would probably be interesting subject matter, accuracy, and ease of comprehensibility.

Nish's graph is easy to understand -- spending time with him is fun at a 1:1 ratio . . . although who knows what units of fun are measured in. It's also clever because he uses himself as the y-axis and makes the thing vertically. It's not a particularly interesting subject, but it's fine.

The point Mark is trying to make is that individual politics is an incredibly small factor when held up against the vastness of eternity. I believe it's supposed to be a bar graph, but the scale is intentionally done poorly to help effectuate the point so I'm not sure. It's kind of ambiguous what the y-axis is measuring (there's a percentage symbol, but percentage of what?). Greg dismisses it because he immediately forgot the subject matter and I am in agreement that it wasn't an amazing effort.

Sally's graph compares how much sex she gets versus how much sex she wants over the course of time. It's easy to understand and I would be bold enough to say it's interesting subject matter. The only downside is that she builds it out of a variety of different objects, so it's not very pretty.

Aisling's graph is attempting to compare the number of women and men on Taskmaster by series. The data is pretty easy to visualize, even without a graph: 1/5, 1/5, 1/5, 2/5, 2/5. Lots of problems here. The lines shouldn't start at zero (unless we're including Edenborough as Series Zero), the show didn't begin with more women than men in the cast, and the lines should be flat for the first three series then adjust beginning with Series Four. This is an easy last place.

Bob does a bar graph of units of piss by county. I can't verify it's accuracy, so I'm giving it five.

I almost want to give Sally a point for the unfairness of it all. Alex did not make his puns in a minute, he made them over the course of days. No points for either of them.

This is an obvious contender for the best task in the entire show. I think the opinions on this one are pretty well settled. The team of three writes a very funny and unhinged song, but Mark and Nish absolutely knock it out of the park. Greg was still splitting points here so the team of two somehow only get three for the best creative work anyone has produced on the show.

I really really want to give them five, but absent a disqualification four is the maximum.

Live Task: Throw the egg through the hoop and catch it as many times as possible. You may not touch the net or post.

This looks pretty straightforward.

Alex blowing the whistle and Nish immediately losing his egg is the funniest, most predictable thing ever. For some reason Aisling starts the task standing on the base of her hoop, so she definitely touched it. By the end, Bob is the only one who pulls off a successful throw and catch.

As unfair as it seems, logistically the other four contestants should probably be put into joint second. Aisling should be disqualified, but I read this one as disqualification stopping score accumulation rather than outright losing you the task.

I triple checked my math because I in no way thought I'd have Mark beating Bob. I think it ultimately boiled down to evaluating what he did objectively whereas Greg enjoyed randomly docking him for laughs. Even so, I was pretty sure Bob was going to win so this is a stunner.

In the end, I gave Nish two more episode wins than he had in the real show. Aisling never ended up getting one (losing that tiebreaker with Mark hurts).

With that, I can say goodbye to Series Five. Series Six is next and it's worse, but I won't let that stop me. If I end up doing a regrade of Champion of Champions, it'd likely be after everything else. It's taken me six months to get through five seasons and they get longer from here, so it'll be interesting to see if I'm still plugging away at it by then.

Anyway, having gotten through five seasons, my version of Champion of Champions would have been Josh, Richard, Dave, Hugh, and Mark. I'd honestly say we're better off with the cast that we got.

Come Away With Me

So, this is my first ever fan fiction, and it is a rea person fic. I know they are controversial and a lot of people find them uncomfortable, so if you don’t like it, please feel free to keep scrolling. “We can walk it back later. We can and we will.” Lili delivered the line as she wiped a very real tear from her cheek. Cole had been eating lunch at craft services after finishing up his scenes for the day, and he was waiting for Lili to finish up as well so they could head home together.

However, he had gotten distracted from his sandwich when he heard the broken sound of Lili’s voice as Betty, speaking to KJ as Archie. His heart broke as he watched her swipe at her red-rimmed eyes and tuck a loose strand of hair behind her ear. When the director finally called “cut” on the scene, she took a deep, shaky breath and KJ gave her a bear hug and said something that made her laugh before walking off to head back to his trailer. Cole smiled a little to see his girlfriend’s spirits lifted, even momentarily. He stayed back for a moment to let her collect herself before walking softly to her and offering a hand to lead her back to her trailer.

They walked in silence, Cole knowing that Lili would need the time and fresh air to separate herself from the heartbreak her character was experiencing. When they got to her trailer door, he went inside with her and sat on her couch and scrolled instagram while she changed and washed her face, only speaking when she started collecting her things in her bag to go home.

“Hey Lil, you doing ok?”

“Yeah…Yeah, I am,” she said with a somewhat-forced smile, much less bright than the usual 100-watt grin reserved just for him. “It’s just that this episode has taken so much out of me. I’m just ready to get home and rest ASAP.”

They still had several days left of filming that episode, so Cole was a little worried. Even the table read had had a few cast members dabbing at their eyes. But he knew that Lili’s anxiety had been worse since the Teen Choice Awards. The time on the red carpet, on stage, and the exposure at the airport as they headed back to Vancouver right away had taken a lot of energy out of her. To be filming this challenging episode right away couldn’t be easy on her, but he hoped that some relaxing and Netflix plus a good night’s sleep would help her get back to herself.

Cole stayed quiet on the way home and even as they entered their apartment, giving her her space. Lili dropped her things, immediately heading to the bathroom. He heard the bath water start to run and he put the kettle on and got down a mug and a bag of her favorite tea. A half hour later, Lili emerged from the bathroom wearing her favorite white button down that he’d worn at Coachella along with light blue panties that he could just barely see the edges of underneath his shirt. Her hair was in a messy bun and her soft skin was pink and splotchy from the hot water. She smelled of chamomile and lavender. He smiled as he handed her the mug of tea and pulled back the throw on the couch for her to snuggle into him. He kissed the top of her head in response and draped his arm over her waist as she sipped the perfectly cooled tea.

No sooner than she’d finished the mug and set it on the coffee table, he heard her soft breaths even out and he knew she was out for the night. He gently extricated himself from underneath her, and turned to lift her off the couch bridal-style and deposited her into their bed. She had hardly stirred even with all his awkward movements, and he hoped that this deep sleep would help her to wake up feeling refreshed and ready to start over.

Cole had the next day off and he’d spent it at home, doing his best to recover from his own anxiety after the Teen Choice Awards. He took a walk to take a few pictures around Vancouver and played video games, and even called his brother to catch up.

He had felt a little better that morning since Lili had woken up with a smile and left for work with her usual pep back in her step. She seemed more herself and he hoped her scheduled scenes for the day would be less taxing than yesterday’s. He knew she had a night shoot that evening so he didn’t wait up for her. After hitting a bar down the street with friends, he crashed in their bed and sleep found him quickly, for which he was thankful because he had to be on set bright and early.

However, his dreams of sleep were crushed a few hours later when he awoke to see that the clock read 4 am. More alarming, however, was the sound of quiet sobbing coming from the living room.

Cole flung his legs out of bed and padded softly into the living room where he saw his beautiful girlfriend on the patio with the throw from the couch wrapped around her, her small frame shaking slightly as she sobbed and hiccupped into her folded arms.

Cole knew better than to ask what was wrong. He knew she had had to shoot late into the night and may have only been home for a hour or two. He quietly took his place next to her on the floor of the balcony and asked, “Which scene?”

Lili lifted her head and smeared her sleeve across her eye. He noticed that she hadn’t even bothered to wash off her Betty make up before leaving set - something he had never seen Lili forget to do. After a few moments of silence between them, punctuated only by her breath catching on its way in and out of her body, she whispered, “the bus stop.”

Cole nodded his understanding and wrapped his arm around her shoulder to pull her into his chest. He had seen her rehearse that scene and even then his heart had wrenched at her pain. He knew her acting was phenomenal, but he also knew that the emotions she portrayed on screen came from a very real place inside her, as he was the one who saw the aftermath of every scene, including the most difficult.

He thought several months back to when they filmed episode one and, more specifically, her scene with KJ where Betty confronted Archie about his feelings for her. Cole and Lili had just begun to get to know each other then, but when he had come across her sobbing in Betty’s pink homecoming dress behind one of the set props, he sat down by her and wordlessly let her sink into him and cry until she was done, and then he walked her back to her trailer, using every quirky joke he had to try and bring a smile back to her face on the way.

A moist feeling on his chest brought him back to the present, and he realized that Lili’s tears had slowly soaked through the sweatshirt he’d worn to bed. Only when the cool night air hit the wet spot and gave him a chill did he realize that Lili was shivering behind her sobs, and he gently helped her to her feet and into the bathroom to help her get ready for bed. He sat dozing outside the door while she showered, and brushed her hair silently when she came out wearing his t shirt from that day with her favorite sleep pants. She climbed into bed with him and, with a shaky breath, she let sleep consume her instantly. As he watched her face slip into a peaceful expression, he realized that that was the first time he had seen her calm and happy in days. And it was then that he knew he had to do something to take her away from this when it was over.

The last scene either Lili or Cole had to film for the episode was their scene together at Pop’s. As he sat across from her and spoke his lines, he knew the anguish he saw on Betty’s face was actually Lili’s. She had thrown herself into this episode so passionately, and even as his heart swelled with pride for her incredible talent, it also ached for her. Between takes, his mind wandered to the backseat of his Jeep where his red suitcase sat full of both of their most comfortable clothes to last them the weekend. He had had to sneak it out while Lili was still asleep that morning, and hid it underneath the blue woven blanket he kept in the back. One last time before filming again, his mind ticked through all the reservations he’d made to make sure that everything this weekend would run smoothly and be a balm to Lili’s anxiety.

A while after filming, he emerged (de-juggified) from his trailer to meet Lili and as he walked toward her across the parking lot where their trailers sat, he was grateful that he’d planned their little surprise getaway. Her feet dragged the ground and her normally glowing face was sunken and marred by heavy bags under her eyes. When she met him he slung her bag off her shoulder and onto his in one fluid motion, and took the brunt of her weight as she sunk into him. He turned them both in the direction of the Jeep, and as he opened her door for her to climb in, she finally spoke in a small, tired voice.

“Can we please go to Taco Bell for dinner? I really need a soft taco. And one of your famous Baja blast margaritas.”

Cole smirked sheepishly and responded, “Taco Bell sounds great, but we’ll have to save the margaritas for another time. I may be quite the scoundrel but I don’t drive with open containers in the car.”

Lili’s brow furrowed in confusion. “What the hell are you talking about? We’re just going home…aren’t we?”

Cole thought about how to spring the news on her as he put the Jeep in drive and turned around to back out of his parking spot. He hadn’t really gotten to that part in his plans, so he decided to just come out with it. “Well, actually, we’re going to Whistler. You’ve just been so exhausted this week with filming this episode and I thought it seemed like you could use an escape from the Couv for a while. If you don’t feel up to traveling though, I totally understand. I can call and cancel everything, though all I really reserved was the hotel and dinner because I wanted you to be able to deci-“

Cole’s nervous rambling was cut off when Lili choked out a sob next to him. He slammed the brakes on his coast through the parking lot but before he could start apologizing, Lili mustered up the last of her energy to lunge across the gearshift to give him a salty, tearful kiss. She leaned back to her seat and wiped tears from her eyes as she grinned stupidly.

Cole sat frozen in the driver’s seat with a confused but optimistic smile. “So the vacation was a good idea?” he tried tentatively after a few breaths.

“Yes, Cole, this is the sweetest, most considerate thing anyone’s ever done for me! Thank you so much, seriously, you have no idea how badly I need to leave Vancouver right now. But we have to stop at the apartment so I can pack - I don’t have anything! I don’t have any clothes or my moisturizer, I-“

Now it was Cole’s turn to cut Lili off with a soft, smiling kiss. “Don’t worry, love. Everything has been taken care of. I promise. Do you trust me?”

America’s design community comes into its own

A heated plagiarism scandal that rocked design discourse, a splashy return to 1970s maximalism, and independent design came out on top. With New York City’s annual NYCxDesign festival now officially concluded, these are just some of the lasting impressions from two weeks that were chock full of events, launches, and installations.

Held less than a month after Milan Design Week and Salone del Mobile—the world’s largest and longest-standing trade show dedicated to furniture and product design—NYCxDesign is our most comparable stateside counterpart, with several fairs and countless pop-up events spanning the city’s five boroughs. Yet despite the fact that New York is home to a higher density of design professionals than anywhere else in the country, NYCxDesign has often been regarded as an afterthought to industry insiders: Larger brands and furniture houses will often present the same collections just previewed in Milan, and often with activations much less grand than those presented abroad. (It’s hard to compete when Milanese pop-up venues are often ornate, centuries-old palazzos, open to the public just for the occasion.) What’s more, NYCxDesign has rarely been able to contain itself to a single, tidy week—last year, it ballooned to span nearly the entire month of May, making it a marathon event that might dissuade international visitors from being able to take the whole spectrum of events in a single visit.

All of those factors, however, also give NYCxDesign some distinct advantages: There’s no shortage of homegrown talent, and with the high cost of attending and exhibiting abroad, many local designers opt to go all in on their home turf. With cross-disciplinary collaborations, spirited debates, and a host of openings celebrating independent work, this year convinced us that American design may have finally, refreshingly, come into its own as a platform where designers can speak to a broader audience. This year’s edition of NYCxDesign genuinely felt like a cultural event, more akin to fashion week or a film festival than a staid trade show. Read on for our top five takeaways.

Rise of the designer-curator

In the age of social media, are any of us not curators? This year saw a surge in a particular breed of multi-hyphenate—the designer-as-curator-and-exhibitor—with a number of independently organized group exhibitions in a show of tight-knit community. Last year, in the jarring wake of Trump’s presidential election, the all-women design trio of Egg Collective mounted a show of work by women designers in their downtown showroom, in a positive and constructive flex of dissent against the state of affairs. As a follow-up to the widely lauded effort, this year they teamed with Lora Appleton of Kindermodern on Designing Women II: Masters, Mavericks, and Mavens, featuring an international and cross-generational mix of mixed-media works by Nicola L., Mimi Jung, Mira Nakashima, Bari Ziperstein, and more.

Manhattan was particularly hard-hit by the decline of brick-and-mortar retail this past year, with a string of closures in previously high-trafficked districts—look to the formerly boutique-packed stretch of Bleecker Street in the West Village for a prime example of how digital-first commerce has affected neighborhood streets IRL. The vacant storefronts are signs of a changing industry, and for some designers, a serendipitous boon. At a former Superdry clothing store on Broadway—one of several vacancies on the main thoroughfare in Greenwich Village—several studios banded together to present Next Level, a group show of work by their peers and friends, partly looking to channel the cultural fervor that completely overtakes Milan during their design week.

“[Eskayel] exhibited at Salone for the first time ever this past year, and it really opened my eyes as to what was possible,” said Nick Chacona, a partner at the Brooklyn rug studio Eskayel, one of the show’s organizers. “Events are so integrated into the city there, and we wanted to bring some of that approach here to New York.”

In East Williamsburg, the tongue-in-cheek design collective Jonald Dudd (no, that’s not a typo) curated Return of the Living Dudd, a group show housed in a recently abandoned, half-gutted 99 cent storefront. Framed as a “platform for dissenting objects,” it was easily the wackiest batch of works to surface all week—ranging from vessels with live-oozing goop in swirling shades of pink and green, to a seatless chair made of square bathroom tile—all placed in a collage-like disarray upon a swooping, cobalt-blue carpeted backdrop that evoked an appropriately internet-bred aesthetic. As the curators Lydia Cambron and Chris Held held forth: “Punx not dead.”

Their DIY ethos was a refreshing counterpoint to the hallowed halls of Jacob J. Javits Center—home to ICFF, the longstanding trade show anchor to NYCxDesign—and gave the corporate approach a run for its money. New York’s new class of designer-curator-whatever brought out some of the most compelling work of the festival.

Fashion, design, and internet culture collide

Chunky geometries, tubular forms, furry surfaces, and supergraphic patterns were all out in droves this year. It was a signal that 1970s maximalism and a fashion-influenced approach to interiors are still driving many independent designers. Was a secret memo circulated to all of the cool young makers, or has the Internet given birth to a globalized ur-aesthetic? Seen at the various booths of design fairs WantedDesign, ICFF, and Sight Unseen alike, it stood up alongside the enduring popularity of midcentury and Scandinavian modern design. Seemingly more concerned with form than comfort or function, many of these works channeled an approach to furniture and interiors driven by fashion.

The idea of how fashionable trends spread, particularly in our internet-driven society, became a topic of heated debate after Kamarq, a Japanese startup aspiring to be the “Netflix of furniture,” was forced to cancel its debut collection within hours of its launch, after copycat claims on Instagram went viral overnight. The designers of the collection, fashion personality and former Lady Gaga stylist Nicola Formichetti, and PJ Mattan, a consultant behind brands like Hem and Bezar—neither of whom had previously ever designed furniture, and extolled the idea of a “fast fashion” approach to home interiors—suggested their tube-and-slab forms were so basic so as to allude authorship, while many others (including this writer) saw undeniable likenesses to a 2015 Matter collection by independent designer Ana Kras. The Wing cofounder Audrey Gelman, artist Katie Stout, musician Dev Hynes, and Hem founder Petrus Palmer were among the many creatives who commented to weigh in on the controversial topic that, fittingly, cemented Kamarq as a “fast fashion” brand indeed.

In general, the fashion world played a significantly direct influence in NYCxDesign this year, with trendy downtown boutiques Philip Lim, Creatures of Comfort, and Opening Ceremony among the many fashion fixtures that teamed up with local furniture designers as part of Sight Unseen‘s curatorial project Field Studies, which paired creatives across various disciplines to produce unique one-off pieces, with proceeds going to a range of charitable causes. Even the big brands got cuddly with the fashion world: Swiss furniture juggernaut Vitra launched a series of dresses and skirts with Akris, featuring iconic patterns by the legendary midcentury textile designer Alexander Girard.

The ecological imperative

The model of a circular economy—by which resources and materials are continually circulated, from by-product to manufacture, in order to drastically reduce waste—has been simmering within critical design discourse for the past several years. And while such thinking has begun to infiltrate even Milan’s luxury-focused design week, it emerged in top billing at NYCxDesign, where some of the most highly attended projects applied the progressive model toward working proofs of concept.

At the sunglasses shop Retrosuperfuture, architect-designer Arielle Assouline-Lichten of Slash Objects presented an installation inspired by traditional Japanese rock gardens, but traded stone for rubble-like mounds of shredded tires and recycled rubber. Designer Kim Markel, who often works with discarded plastic bottles to mold translucent, candy-like creations, paired with cosmetics brand Glossier to create a luscious armoire with pink-tinted panels made from the company’s packaging, saved and collected for months by its employees. For her spindly side tables, she lathes spun stone dust, the powdery composite waste left behind from stone cutting. And in Brooklyn, the MINI-backed design incubator A/D/O continued its recently launched, year-long program tackling the global clean drinking water crisis.

Communal dining proved to be the basis of a winning engagement at WantedDesign Manhattan, a smaller trade show of international exhibitors, where the Finnish Cultural Institute of New York hosted a working pop-up cafe called the Zero-Waste Bistro (full disclosure: this writer will be participating in a program with FCINY this year). Designed and built entirely with recycled materials, it also served a revolving tasting menu of delectable, prix-fixe meals minimizing scrap food waste, with dishes like coconut husk ice cream and chopped asparagus salad, from the chefs of the Helsinki-based concept restaurant Nolla. The project was co-curated by Harri Koskinen and Linda Bergroth, who also designed the space using recycled and compressed Just water bottles and TetraPak waste to dazzling effect, like a pointillist tableau or digital rendering made real. The pop-up bistro was, above all, a tasty sight and experience to behold. The future of design must be ecological, that much is sure—and, as the event’s sold-out seatings proved, style and taste need not go by the wayside to achieve an environmentally responsible outcome.

The performative power of objects

The demands of maintaining a creative practice in a highly digital, politically asinine time is not an easy task—which may be why many designers also took to physical works to explore performative and expressive narratives. While also exhibiting at ICFF as part of the curated Collective Concept presentation, Brooklyn-based designer John Sorensen-Jolink of Coil+Drift—a former dancer turned furniture and lighting maker—presented Home Unimprov at a Soho gallery. Bringing both sides of his work together, the show explored our bodily relationship to designed environments, combining live choreography and short films centered around a trio of conceptual chair designs.

Over at Colony, an independent design cooperative in Chinatown, founder and curator Jean Lin presented works by Fort Standard, Meg Callahan, Moving Mountains, and more, under the overarching theme of Balance/Imbalance, both physically and sensorially, through color, form, materiality, shape, and even sound. “Perfect balance is a lie, but magic can be found in the space between balance and imbalance,” says Lin, who last year organized a show around the theme of lightness, in response to the tumultuous and heavy American political landscape.

At WantedDesign Manhattan, Polish design studio Kosmos Project presented Future Illusions, a collection of illustrative landscape rugs inspired by video games, complete with a participatory, choose-your-own-adventure element. The designs can be purchased as-is, or uniquely customized through a series of personality quiz-type questions that algorithmically generate a unique variation on a theme. The overall concept, the designers said, was to show both sides of the coin when it comes to big data–and ultimately make viewers more aware of their consequential choices.

Toying with tech

While big consumer tech brands made a splashy arrival to Milan‘s traditionally furniture and interiors-focused design week last month—with high-profile activations from Google Home, to Sonos and even Instagram—in New York, technology found its way into design show with a decidedly more homegrown and experimental slant.

At Sight Unseen’s highly curated satellite show of emerging talents, Drew Seskunas of The Principals teamed with musician Ashley Olsen to create a custom 3D printer. Sound waves of the singer’s voice were translated into physically rendered wax forms, which were then used to mold aluminum candlesticks—rigorously traversing from immaterial to material, it was an undeniably engaging experiment: call it design synesthesia. Hailing from Warsaw, UAU Project exhibited a more market-friendly approach to 3D-printed wares, with a colorful range of lights and small tabletop objects made from a reused corn byproduct. They were available for cash-and-carry, or, for a reduced price, as a digital file compatible with any desktop 3D printer.

Darlings of the hospitality and contract market, lighting studio Rich Brilliant Willing wowed with a series of conceptual, working prototypes exploring the new formal possibilities of OLED technology and 3D-knit textiles. The team took a minimal, sculptural approach to thin, pliable strips of OLED, which read more like ambient surfaces or screens. Unlike traditional bulbs or LED diodes, partner Theo Richardson explained, OLEDs naturally emit soft, diffuse light—meaning no shade or additional element is required. Instead, the studio added its first experimentation with 3D-knit textiles into the mix, sheathing each of the OLED strips—molded and hanged to gently bend by the weight of its own heft—with translucent, graphic-patterned sleeves.

Not all young designers embraced new-fangled technology; some even eschewed it the name of mindfulness. At Hands to Work, the third edition of Furnishing Utopia, a now-annual group show sponsored by Design Within Reach, dozens of designers were commissioned to develop simple, useful items and tools with an intent to engage and transcend the tradition of Shaker design. The overall vibe was gleefully analog, as visitors were invited to engage in “sensory isolation,” and left to their devices in an all-white room containing only a tidy tray of gravel and an immaculately designed dustpan and brush. Among the wares displayed on the main exhibition floor: a wheeled planter by Jamie Wolfond, a basket bound with cable ties by Shigeki Fujishiro, and a wooden dish rack by Studio Tolvanen.

Ah, the Met Gala— one of the biggest star-studded events of the year. Unless you’re an A-list celebrity or fabulous designer, chances are you will never know what it’s like to attend the “Oscars of the East.”

But thankfully, enough celebrities and guests have spoken about the event that we have a glimpse of what it would be like to actually get into this storied ball.

From pricey tables to celebrity interactions, here’s what it’s really like inside the Met Gala.

The Met Gala serves a purpose — to raise money for the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

The Met Gala, known formally as the Costume Institute Gala, is a fundraising gala for the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. It’s essentially an annual ball that serves as a glamorous arena of high fashion for designers and celebrities.

It’s hosted by the chairwoman of the gala, Vogue’s Editor-in-Chief Anna Wintour, with famous faces usually co-chairing the event. This year the honor went to Amal Clooney, Rihanna, and Donatella Versace. Last year, it was Katy Perry and Pharrell Williams.

Though it’s been around since 1946, Wintour took over as chairwoman of the gala in 1999 and ever since then, it’s gone from a philanthropic event to the “Oscars of the East.” In addition to a red carpet spectacle, guests can expect a cocktail hour and formal dinner.

It’s hosted on the first Monday in May every year at the Met in New York City.

The Met Gala takes place every year on the first Monday in May (obviously the inspiration behind the title of the documentary, “The First Monday in May,” about the event).

That money goes to the Costume Institute, by the way — in 2015, more than $12.5 million was raised, according to The Times.

Oh and just in case you thought you could save for it, Wintour reportedly has a say over every single invitation.

If you do get invited, the invites are pretty nice.

The invites are just as classy as the event itself. Obviously, Wintour wouldn’t settle for a generic e-vite, so guests are given gorgeous invitations that features what the theme will be with typically an artistic flair, such as a Richard Avedon photograph or a Man Ray painting.

This year, there is an age restriction.

At the 2016 Met Gala, Willow and Jaden Smith were two young stars in attendance.

There was never an age restriction in place at the Met Gala — until this year. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the rule was established because the gala is “not an appropriate event for people under 18.”

This means that young Hollywood faces like Maddie Ziegler and the kids of “Stranger Things” aren’t eligible to attend.

However, there is an exception to the rule. Guests who are under 18 are allowed to attend, as long as they’re chaperoned by their parents.

If you do get to go, you must dress to the nines.

Guests at the Met Gala go all out when it comes to what they wear. Since the Met Gala is associated with a museum show, guests typically dress thematically — sometimes the show will honor a designer, like this year’s Commes des Garçons gala, or perhaps it will have a broader directive, such as “Manus x Machina” or “Model as Muse.”

From this theme, celebrities are typically courted by designers to wear their custom looks. These are often dramatic and daring dresses or accessories. Sometimes it backfires — think Madonna’s risque Givenchy look in 2016— but often it wows, such as Rihanna’s robe designed by Chinese couture designer Guo Pei in 2015.

Getting inside can be a hassle.

The Met Gala takes place every year at New York City’s Metropolitan Museum of Art. Guests arrive at the bottom of the Met’s famous staircase and walk up the red carpet. The tent is filled with flashing bulbs and the screams from pedestrians cramming in to try to glimpse the stars and their dresses.

But it’s worth it, considering the gorgeous interior.

Planning for the event happens over the course of the entire year, according to Vogue, which means that the interiors get more fantastical with every event — from the Met’s grand staircase decorated completely in bamboo in 2015 to a double helix of roses in the great hall in 2016, each event is more outrageous and decadent than the last.

The guests at the Gala are led inside and around the museum, typically through the Costume Institute’s upcoming exhibit, as well as allowed to mingle for a cocktail hour.

Eventually, everyone is led to where the performances and dinner will take place — in 2016 and 2017, it was in the gorgeous Temple of Dendur room, while in 2015, Rihanna performed in the courtyard of the American Wing. Regardless of where it occurs, you can be sure it’s impeccably decorated.

In 2015, Anna Winter made the decision to ban photos or social media posts from inside the event. Of course, many celebrities ignored the ruling, including Kim Kardashian, Kerry Washington, and Alicia Keys.

It was rumored Winter was thinking about punishing those celebs who broke the rule, but no action — that we know of — was ever taken. In 2017, even more celebrities broke the no social media rule.

The rule was likely to keep celebrities’ privacy since they let loose inside.

Easily the best part about going to the Met Gala are the performances and watching the celebrities interact with one another. From bathroom selfies (hey, celebs are people, too!) to Justin Bieber meeting Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, the Met Gala is like celebrity prom on steroids.

You’re also likely see new friendships or romances forming — in 2016, Hiddleswift became a huge thing after Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston danced together at the Met Gala.

And though this all sounds fun, some people hate the Met Gala.

Not everyone has fun at the Met Gala. Gwyneth Paltrow famously said she had no fun whatsoever: “I’m never going again. It was so un-fun. It was boiling. It was too crowded. I did not enjoy it at all,” the Goop maven said.

Amy Schumer similarly hated the event, calling it a “farce” to Howard Stern and saying the entire event was like a “punishment.”

Demi Lovato also said that one star treated her so terribly that she felt like drinking alcohol, and had to leave the event early to go to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting.

And then there was Lena Dunham, who drew intense backlash after criticizing not only the Met Gala, but Odell Beckham Jr., the famous New York Giants wide receiver who she was seated next to.

“I was sitting next to Odell Beckham Jr., and it was so amazing because it was like he looked at me and he determined I was not the shape of a woman by his standards,” she said in a conversation with Amy Schumer in her Lenny Letter. “He was like, ‘That’s a marshmallow. That’s a child. That’s a dog.’ It wasn’t mean — he just seemed confused.”

Many accused the “Girls” creator and star of unfairly singling out Beckham, while others called her comments at best problematic and at worst racist for immediately sexualizing the gaze of the black man seated beside her.

Dunham, meanwhile, said it was a joke about being “an average-bodied woman at a table of supermodels and athletes.”

This year’s event will likely be one of the most memorable — and controversial — yet.

Dolce & Gabbana’s 2014 Milan Fashion Week presentation included pieces with religious art.

This year’s theme is “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination.” The gala has selected a variety of themes over the years, but this year’s pick is already being called controversial.

According to Vogue, approximately 150 pieces will be on display. Some of the well-known names participating this year include Dolce & Gabbana, Coco Chanel, Balenciaga, and Valentino (all of which have incorporated religious elements in their clothing at some point).

There will also be 40 pieces loaned straight from the Vatican, some of which have never left Rome before. The pieces include the mid-18th to the early 21st centuries, like a pair of shoes worn by Saint John Paul II and a papal tiara given to Pius IX by Queen Isabella II of Spain.

In keeping with the religious theme, the exhibit will take place across three different locations: the Anna Wintour Costume Center (which is part of the Met), the medieval galleries (also part of the venue), and The Cloisters (a museum that’s part of the Met, but located in upper Manhattan).

The gala will be co-chaired by Amal Clooney, Rihanna, and Donatella Versace (who is a sponsor this year).
