Looking at Hoseok, you think, is exactly like being struck by lightning. Which is to say, every time, all the time, looking at Hoseok means you feel him everywhere, all over and all at once.Â
Inside the lighthouse, there is no escaping him.Â
Pressing your back against the rough concrete of the small light room, you tilt your head to the side as the totality of Hoseokâs warmth, ardor, and fidelity blossoms over you. He flowers deep in the nodes of your lungs, your breath constricted as you take him in, studying the curve of his lips, the slope of his nose, the way he wears the night as though he is the stars.
In the distance, waves rush to the shore, kissing the land with the same enthusiasm you wish to be kissing him, only to pull away from land; the water shy, anxious of the earthâs response to its affections. Over and over, the sea rolls like thunder. Every now and then, the light that spins overhead refracts downward, illuminating the blood that has rushed to his cheeks. Flushed, his lips part as he processes the words you have just told him, all red and red and red with understanding.
As though he is burning, as though you are not burning for him, your hands clinging tightly to your skirts as you hold your knees against your chest. It should be utterly unfair, you think, for him to appear so beautiful, so exquisite, even as he remains painfully stricken by your words. The searing ache in your chest germinates alongside your love, mind racing with the apologies he deserves. Your bones tremble with the force of remaining still, prepared to reach out and hold his face and tell him it was a lie. You want to smile for him, want to tease him, want to say youâd been terribly silly and that such jokes are best kept for nights when the sky is not clouded, not cold, and instead warmed by your shared rapture.Â
How you would like to give him all the kindest, all the softest, words in the world.
âIt canât be true.â
Heâs said this twice, the disbelief in his voice only just winning out against the grief. Hoseok repeats it again, taking a step towards you, eyes cast down to where you have slunk in shame and sadness. Hands limp at his sides, his fingers quake, torn between balling his hands into fists or running through his hair, their resting place for his worry. Deciding on neither, he simply stands tall and stoic, appearing so small in the light that cascades around the room.
Youâd glow for him if you could, if you felt like you deserved to illuminate any part of him at all.
Looking away from his woefully dejected expression, you turn your attention to the small gap in the wall beside you. A window once blocked the wind - stained glass, exquisite. It shattered during a storm, on a night when he pressed himself so deep inside you traces of his essence lingered on your tongue. He was deep enough it hurt, rolling into you with enthusiastic vigor. Tonight, the breeze smells of low tide, acrid in the back of your nose and sour, just like your mood.
âWe knew this would happen,â is your quiet reply.Â
A weak and pathetic excuse, you hate the words even as you say them. Shameful, you think with a grimace, to have pretended that you could have a happy ending, that convincing your father would have been simple. The lies you told yourself and Hoseok, the platitudes that fell from your lips to comfort him, turn on your now, betrayals stacked against you that weigh heavily your judgement. Youâve been childish, so childish, to assume you could have ever been happy.
Hoseok shakes his head, refusing to accept your answer. All fury and rage, he comes to stand before you and lowers to his knees, demanding you look at him. His presence is a live wire, the heat and energy from his skin is vital, a pull against yours that makes you regard him once more, confronted by his enduring beauty. Flooding your vision, he is all you see, all you can fathom, your world beginning and ending with his pleading eyes.Â
âBut itâs been years,â he argues, the high pitched tone of his voice wavering and taught with emotion. Heâs older than you, physically, but at this moment he has never been so young, so small, so gloriously human. âCenturies even. Itâs unfair to you.â
A huff of breath rushes through your nose, your scoff ripe with bitterness. âSomeone finally slayed the Sydral, as archaic as this ritual actually is. My father said I should have always expected it.â
âAnd so nowâŠâ Hoseokâs voice drifts, falling back onto his knees crestfallen. The corner of his lips drop into the beginnings of a deep frown, all manner and will to fight rapidly dissipating.
âI have to marry them,â you nod, answering his unspoken question.
For a long while, you hold his gaze, allowing yourself to get lost in the umber of his irises and missing the mirth that usually ignites their sparkle. It is just his breath that cascades over your skin, just the waves that rush beyond the light room, just the world that seems to turn onward, without you, time passing without either of you truly acknowledging it. In this silence, you see your history, your every moment spent with him: the day you met; the day he could not help himself any longer and kissed you soundly, without restraint; the first moment you told him you loved him; the first moment he said he needed you; the plastic ring he won at the pier arcade - extraordinary in all its ugliness - and the gentle, reverent, way he slid it over your finger, calling it a promise of fidelity.Â
In Hoseok, you see it all.Â
Similarly, he drowns in you, the pink of his cheeks deepening to rose with each passing breath. Posture falling slack, the strap of his ride suspender slips from his shoulder, the collar of his linen shirt loosening with the lack of restraint. A sliver of his collarbone becomes exposed, golden and rich, a tantalizing patch of skin you would caress and kiss if only the circumstances had been different. You wonder idly what he remembers of you, what he sees in your own dispirited expression. You wonder if he remembers the way he loved you, the way he loved you beyond your light and into your darkness.Â
You wonder if he remembers the way he ate your shadows - with his whole mouth, with fervor, with pride. You wonder if he remembers the way you devoured him just the same.Â
âThis is ridiculous,â he announces, finally. Turning to look out the window, he regards the sky solemnly, the curve of his profile imposing in its majesty. Eyes narrowed, it is the harshest he has ever looked, devoid of forgiveness. âItâs supposed to be me.â
Swiftly, you shake your head, adamant in your disagreement. You reach for him, leaning forward to rest your hand against his chest, against his heart where it thunders in his sternum. Warmth from his skin radiates into your blood, taking root between your joints. Hoseok worms his way into pieces of your spirit long left abandoned, and you swallow thickly, wondering if such affection as this is normal, if itâs always this way.
âIâd never have let you.â Your dispute is biting, sharp enough Hoseok turns his eyes back to you, jaw clenched and tight with silent fury. âYouâre human. It would have killed you. And then where would I be?â
âYouâd be sitting where I am,â he argues, emphatic.Â
Reaching for your hand where it rests, he covers it with his own, lifting it slightly to twine his fingers with yours. Unable to help himself, he inches closer, running his thumb over your knuckles and sending shivers along your nerves. Like always, his touch is a wildfire, the electric kinetic energy needed to set you aglow. Your mind swims with him the same way your body becomes whelmed by his devotion, but he does not let himself become distracted.Â
âDo you even understand?â Voice little more than a whisper, Hoseokâs gaze is penetrating, a bite to his veneration that demands your complete attention. Tilting his head to the side, he continues. âYou think I wouldnât die for you?â
You squeeze his hand with tenacity, acknowledging his sentiment, but he does not see all the things you have witnessed. He does not know the true menace of the Sydral, does not know its tricks, its many heads, its speed, its cunning; Hoseok would die for you, and death would find him quickly.Â
Instead, you offer him a small smile, one that is so fragile and close to breaking. Hoseokâs intensity burns within your chest, transforming his softness into the valor of a man that leaves you breathless. Salvaging your own strength, you lower your gaze to the white collar of his shirt, to the soft linen and the expanse of his throat where he swallows. This you can regard with pleasure, can regard without fearing you may shatter.
And so you smile, finding the will to fight him once more. âThe problem,â you begin, hoping the earnestness of your smile is enough to cool the rage that boils in his throat, âis that I know you would. And I would live my life alone, married to him while knowing you are gone. Would you really condemn me to such misery? My darling, I would die to keep you safe.â
This feels like anguish; this feels like dying, you think to yourself, growing ever more despondent the longer you feel Hoseok pleading with the emptiness that lurks behind your eyes. You canât bear to face him, not when the tightness in your throat becomes a threat, tears lingering on the precipice of spilling. Every time his gaze meets yours it is brutal in its honesty, violent in the way your love and lust tumbles so completely into grief.
âHow long?â he manages, breathing life to the very question youâd been hoping to avoid.Â
Your future is still so far away, distant enough it makes this moment, and every moment to follow, heavy with the pain of imagination. Still, youâve never been able to deny him anything.Â
Once more, you turn to view the window, regarding it with a vacant expression as though you are regarding time itself. âYou know this is the last time I can see you.â
âI know,â he bites out, unwilling to let you dodge the answer. âI mean how long until...youâre not mine anymore.â
âThatâs...not possible,â you offer gently, casting him a solemn, detached grin. âI am always going to be yours. Even when Iâm in his bed, even when Iâm thousands of miles away, even in death, I am yours.â
Hoseok pulls you against him, compelling your complete attention. Eyes wide, you study his face - the resolution of his passion fierce enough to be an earthquake against your sternum, a collision of meeting worlds. His arm winds itself around your waist while he still clutches your hand, the strength of his grip stinging against your knuckles. You tremble against his powerful frame, inhaling the deep scent of cedar and ambergris that always clings to him, the salt of the ocean that lingers on his skin, the dust that has saturated his shirt from the lighthouse, and you; your vanilla and lemon, the brightness of your own natural scent that emanates from your light and always seems to find him, not unlike rays of the sun.Â
Your mouth waters at this closeness, his own eyes darkened to a rich black as he studies you seriously. Youâve wounded him - worse, youâve denied him - and he presses the tips of his fingers into the soft muscles of your back, ensuring you cannot leave him. Not until he is ready to let you go. Â
âYou know what I mean,â he breathes, words lowered to a hiss. If he were a vengeful sort of man, he would be full of venom. Instead, there is only remorse in his insistence.
Closing your eyes, you sigh. âMonths, most likely. Tomorrow the rituals begin - the seven days feast, the Fate Tying, the Blood Gathering.âÂ
When you look at him again, your lower lip begins to quake. Saying the words makes it all feel immediate, tangible, as though your father stands in the dark corners of the light room casting his judgements. You almost feel him there, his presence always so sinister for a man blessed to command the light; he resides in the silent places, giving birth to shadows, prepared to pull you from bliss at a moment's notice.Â
âAll this pomp and circumstance from eras bygone,â you continue, grounding yourself in the firmness of Hoseokâs arms and chest. The bones of his knees press into your thighs; your hand caught between your twin heartbeats; you immerse yourself in the pain of this connection and remind yourself it hurts because he was always meant to be yours. âItâs been centuries since a goddess has been married off, and yet somehow Iâm the first for such a sentence. The wedding wonât be for at least five months.â
âThen we have time.â Hope saturates his words, his hold on you growing ever more unyielding. âYou can still come to me, we can still see each other,â he explains quickly, speaking in a rush. âNo one will have to know.â
Biting your lips, you raise your hand to the soft strands of his hair, carding your fingers through it. All silk and satin, you relish the texture as his desperation soaks into your pores.Â
âI wish that could be true.â Even as you speak, you focus on his hair, committing these small details to memory. The curve of his bang in the center of his forehead, the deep amber and dark sienna and all the golden highlights that come to life in the daylight, the way all of him, every piece, is soft enough to break you. Yes, you focus on it all. âAll the Old Gods will be gathering in Teylim. There will be more eyes on me than ever before. Ladies coming to fuss over my hair, my clothes, the oils I wear; men worshiping Daeus like heâs some kind of king when, really, heâs just lucky enough to be half of a god. I wonât be able to get away.â
Hoseokâs eyes roam your face, wild and storming, waiting for you to amend your answer. When you do not speak, his brow furrows and he exhales, a small whimper released from the center of his breaking heart. âSo this is it, then? This is really it?â
âIâm so sorry,â you whisper, moving your hand from his hair to cup his cheek.Â
He presses himself into your touch, turning just slightly to kiss delicately at your palm. The sweetness of his tenderness splinters the last of your courage, the tears youâve so valiantly held back starting to burn as they spill over to your cheeks.Â
âI wish it could be different,â you plead - with everyone and no one at all. âI wish for it everyday. Hoseok, I canât -â Distraught, you choke on your own words, and Hoseok pulls you firmly against him, resting your head against his shoulder. âI canât breathe without you. I donât know how Iâm supposed to do this.â
Hoseok says nothing at all as you dampen his shirt, tears spilling into the linen as you struggle not to collapse against him completely. When you are finally alone, you will succumb to the sorrow that has learned to occupy every chamber of your heart. When you are finally alone, you will eat the spirit of rage with teeth and fangs, and you will let the darkness have you, refusing to let the light erupt from your skin. But for now, you let the tears arrive of their own accord, aware that you are suddenly too sad to even weep, tears dripping into his shirt as means to remain a part of him.
Against you, Hoseokâs breath becomes uneven, his own shoulders shuddering as he minds his own heroism, fighting back his own tears. He quivers against you, his stuttering breath exhaled through his nose as he maintains his composure. The light room becomes almost too quiet, the blood rushing your ears drowning out the sound of the sea, narrowing your focus to just the shared heat between your bodies. You inch closer, removing any space that could exist between you, extinguishing any oxygen that would dare to separate you from him. What you would give for a thunderstorm, any sound at all to give life to the end of love, to the start of the war of loving.Â
Unable to stomach the quiet any longer, your mind seems to become unhinged. All the tiny, miserable little thoughts Hoseokâs love kept locked away worm their way past your lips, erupting to life as though your heartbreak has given them permission to persecute you.Â
âI wish you never found me,â you mumble, almost incoherent. Your tongue fumbles with the words, caught between weeping and speaking, making a mess of so much more than just his shirt. âI wish you never saw me. I could love you like that, on my own, from a distance. I could be strong enough to move through life not knowing you, loving only the idea of you. Youâre so much more than anything my mind could have fabricated out of childish desire. The reality of you is heaven. And now, Iâm hurting you. I should die for such a transgression.â
âDonât say that.â Hoseok pulls, easing you back and lifting both his hands to cup your face. Briefly you mourn the loss of his fingers and knuckles so rough against yours, but cradled between his palms, your skin tingles, making a festival out of this contact and celebrating the nuance of his fingerprints. He looks down into you, deep enough you feel him taking root in the center of your belly. You love him most when he looks like this - fierce and unforgiving - and you cannot help the way your body responds, aroused simply by the passion of him. âDonât you dare wish that,â he commands, voice thick. âThe day we met was the day my life started.â
âBut...â you struggle to find the words, drifting off with the implication that, now, his life is surely ending.
âI donât want to know who I would be without you.â Hoseok takes his time as he speaks, an art you cannot comprehend.Â
Behind his eyes, his mind races, words living and dying before they can reach his tongue. He has so much to say, so many more promises to make, so many more words of affirmation heâd like to give you. You see them all, recognize them all - for they mirror yours, are born from your own likeness; you know them all so well, you feel as though you could reach out and touch them.Â
âI canât fathom it, I wonât even consider it.â Shaking his head, he denies this completely, holding onto your stare with a fixation that borders on zealous. âYou came to me, and it felt like I could breathe. You came to me, and I felt like myself. Loving you makes me better, loving you is partly why I am alive.â
Itâs difficult to swallow around the lump in your throat, its size and prowess growing ever larger in the wake of his words. In the oncoming quiet, you wish he hadnât said it, wish he hadnât reminded you of the way you the oncoming storm of his presence before you met him. One look at him and you had seen it all, a life designed by the Fates - marriage, children, hope, happiness. In death heâd have joined you in Teylim, youthful, young, yours. With eternity before you, youâd bask in the rapture and the joyful silliness that comes with forever.Â
He felt it, too, saw it in your eyes. On your fourth meeting, he held you against him and promised you his life.
âI will put my child in your belly,â he announced, deliberate in the way he enunciated his words. You waited for the shock of such an exclamation to overtake you, but it never came. âI canât explain it,â he chuckled, amused by his own enthusiasm, âbut Iâm certain of it. I see my unborn children in your eyes. I think this is what the elders mean when they say there is always a plan, and you will always know it the moment you find it. Iâm so certain my whole life is tied to yours.â
The memory burns within your mind, a scorch of greed mixing immediately with longing. You wish the fire of it would incinerate it to ash, that it would vanish altogether before the Fate Tying. You can handle all of these frivolous little rituals, sure of yourself and your own strength, but the Fate Tying means to unmake you. At just the thought, your stomach begins to sink.Â
You will sit, hands clasped on your amber throne with the sunlight seeking your hair, your cheeks, your lips; Daeus will smile, wrapped in oak and evergreen, in the earth that flourishes beneath your light; and you will weep, watching as the Moirai unstitch your soul from Hoseokâs, peeling it apart inch by horrible inch, to thread it with the ugliness of Daeusâ strands. You will wonder, mouth dry and eyes wet, why the Moirai would bother making a man for you, would bother weaving your spirits together, only to unravel the work they had done, the love you had found.Â
The movement of Hoseokâs gentle caress, pads of his thumbs running across the bones of your cheeks, returns you to the present moment. Once more he whimpers, doing his best to keep you grounded with him, unwilling to lose you before he absolutely must. Digging your nails into his shoulder as you grab fistfuls of his shirt, you wallow with him, knowing that, just like him, you donât know who you would have become without him.
âWhat do we do?â you manage, reduced to a more pathetic version of yourself as you plead with him. Anyone else, and youâd be ashamed to appear so weak. âHow do I do this?â
âI donât know,â is all he can provide. âI donât know.â
âPromise me -â You cut yourself off, not entirely certain where the idea comes from, what part of you would willingly propose such a request, the meaning of what you had intended to say catching up to your mind the moment you heard your own voice. Hoseok waits patiently, and you lower your gaze to the curvature of his lips, wanting to kiss and kiss and kiss him, knowing your next words will scar you both. âPromise me youâll find someone else. Promise me youâll be happy.â
Without any hesitation, he scoffs, dismissing the idea altogether. âDonât ask me to tell a lie.âÂ
âI canât, Hoseok.â Now, it is your turn to hold his face, cupping his cheeks with veneration. Mind reeling, you envision it, certain you could take it. You are certain you would die for less. âI canât do this if I spend my life knowing youâll be unhappy. I canât do this knowing youâre alone.â
Slowly, gently, Hoseok lets the tip of his nose press against yours, rubbing it back and forth, back and forth. Breath a deluge down and over your lips and skin, he somehow finds it within himself to smile, empty of all amusement.Â
âItâs so unfair of you to expect that I could be happy with anyone but you,â he chastises. âIâd rather be alone, utterly and completely, than to be lonely with someone. They deserve better than someone who is with them out of loyalty to another person - a promise kept to the person they truly love.â
His rejection and refusal of your plea inspires a thrill in the pit of your stomach, all manner of possessive pleasure coursing through your veins. How easily he turns you into a selfish woman, how quickly his promises of fidelity make you lose all sight of strength and future vision. What sort of man is Hoseok that he should have such dominion over you, you think to yourself. But then, you know. You know as you have always known: Hoseok is your man, your lover, your soul.
Stroking his cheeks with your thumbs, just as he had done, reverently, adoringly, you bite your lip and feel your exhale shake. âSo what will you do?â
âIâll do as Iâve always done,â he shrugs, as though the very thought is not a bruise within his ribs. âIâll keep the lighthouse. Every night, Iâll let the beacon burn, and keep the light on. Even on clear days, I will let the light shine.â Hoseok smiles as he says this, the first real smile he has managed since he saw you on the shore this evening, waiting, just like always. âWhen youâre up there, perhaps you will see the light.âÂ
He shifts his gaze to the roof of the light house, looking up and beyond, past the clouds, up to the seat of the gods. Furrowing his brow, he hardens his jaw just slightly, eyes turning dark as he demands your father witness him.Â
When he looks at you again, he is a changed man - a boy trapped in the throes of love, and a man on the verge of letting himself perish.
âMaybe up there,â he murmurs, âyou will see my light and know that Iâm burning for you, just as Iâve always been. Iâll continue to love you. Iâll be good, Iâll be pious, and maybe when I die we will meet in Teylim and even in death Iâll watch you, staying close to your light like a bird in flight.â
âHoseok.â The quiver of your bottom lip disrupts the cadence of his name, besmirching it to little more than a sob.
Sucking air through his teeth, Hoseok leans forward, pressing his forehead against yours as his eyes fall shut. At such close proximity, you study the almost feminine length of his eyelashes, the pores of his skin, and wonder who or what god or demon you could barter with to stay inside him forever.
âYouâre supposed to be mine,â he whimpers, the sadness welling up in him like a mountain. âYou are mine, butâŠI will always be yours. Even when they untie us, Iâll be yours. They canât thread me with anyone else. I donât think my soul will allow it.âÂ
Unable to sustain it any longer, your desire for him rises to a swell, erupting beside your sorrow - just as fervent, and even more unyielding. His words are a comfort, an echo you will revisit over and over when you have long departed, but your skin has learned how to ache for his touch, learned how to anticipate the way he moves over you like water, and you need it. You need him.Â
The rest of your pitiful existence looms out before you, days and months and centuries passing without Hoseok to hold you and keep you, and you despise the very notion of it. You rebuke it, refusing to let yourself continue on without knowing how it feels to have him. Tonight, you do not want him as your lover.
Tonight, you want him as your husband.
âKiss me,â you announce, guiding his forehead away from yours, skin prickling with the lack of his warmth. âKiss me like itâs our wedding. I -â The tightness of your voice steals your breath, words hot and heavy in your mouth as you say them. âI want to know what a marriage bed truly feels like. I want to know what our marriage bed would be like.â
Mad with an unbearable passion, no longer contained, Hoseok heeds your words and lets his tongue wander over the seam of your lips. You cling to him, clutching what you can of his shape, his body, and you sigh in woeful euphoria, granting him unspoken entry to the recesses of your mouth - but he does not enter. Your lover has always been disobedient, reckless in the evening when your skin and your lips and your heart are presented to him, and tonight he is no different. Tonight, he scorns the hour, taking his time as he traces over your cupidâs bow with his tongue, rendering the turn of the earth meaningless. The heat of his breath tickles your skin, a cascade in which you luxuriate, and your eyes, blurred by the urgency of your desire, lose all sense of your surroundings until there is only Hoseok.Â
Hoseok - on you, around you, all over you, the rain and the wind all at once.
Only when he has had his fill of your lips does he press the whole of his mouth against yours, sucking languidly at your bottom lip. Skin growing tight, you keen into his kiss, consumed by greed. Slowly, he moves his hands down and down, letting his fingers trace indeterminate lines over your cheeks, your jaw, your bones until they rest at your neck. With his palm over your pulse, he holds you still, his touch a fever, his touch the sun, radiating deep into the caverns of your heart.Â
Filled with him, you think. Absolutely alive with him, Hoseok lets his palm cradle the tether of your life until you are certain he is the oxygen made to sustain your mortal form. You, living and breathing, are little more than remnants of departed touches, composed entirely of his affections, his affirmations, his adoration.
So, too, do you kiss at him, battling against him for any semblance of permanence, demanding that you be remembered. Feeling you writhe against him, insistent in your need for closeness, he hums in pleasure, a musical sound that traverses your synapsis with unhurried ease. Gooseflesh raises on your arms, either by a passing breeze or the way Hoseok leans in, harder, rougher, all manner of dominance in the way he so desperately seeks to have you, and you shiver, delighted by the peak in your senses; delighted, fundamentally, that you will commit every moment of this last evening to bodily memory.
Willing to be devoured, you surrender to him, feeling arousal leak from between your folds as though his savagery has given it permission to spill over. It soaks into your underwear where you briefly mourn the fact that it will not coat your thighs, not yet, and that Hoseok must wait to see how easily you could paint yourself in your wanting. Like always, he anticipates you and ardent your longing; perceptive and always acutely aware of the way you have grown wanton. depraved by the strength of his kisses alone.Â
Hoseok eases his hand to the back of your neck, determination apparent in his grip, and guides you forward to rest in his lap. Letting your legs settle on either side of his thighs, you straddle him, unwilling to break any contact he has with you, your skin, you, your hands on him. You come together like a cataclysm, the burgeoning tip of his erection firm and stubborn where it presses against your core, assertive and tantalizing even beneath the fabric of his trousers.Â
Itâs lewd the way you crave him deep inside you, jaw dropping as your mouth opens wide to gasp in delight. Hoseok wastes no time in letting his tongue glide against yours, explorative and eager, utterly deliberate in his stroking. Slowly, the tips of his fingers move from your neck to your hairline, ever deeper and ever more intrusive. A low chuckle rumbles in his throat as he runs his tongue over yours, grazing the roof of your mouth before he forms a fist in your hair and tilts your head back, swift and aggressive.Â
All at once he pulls away, face hovering just centimeters above yours and gaze hooded as he explores your lustful expression. A flush creeps into your cheeks, the control he has over the flow of your blood is always surprising even if it is to be expected. Hoseok seems pleased, evident in the familiar way his eyes have become blackened by the force of his yearning and the smile that has worked its way into the corner of his lips, a secret for only you to discover. He takes a pause, disregarding his haste, to regard you: your parted lips, your heated cheeks - a fire that has spread itself over your chests and breasts.
âYou are a vision of sin,â he murmurs, cocking his head to the side and tightening his grip in your hair. âWhat would all the gods say?â
Your own nails scratch tenderly into his scalp, gripping his hair to mirror his hold on you. Futile, you know. The strength in Hoseok is silent, a gift that makes him appear merely pretty until the seat of his power is fully revealed, a fortitude you could never mimic.
You swallow, preparing to speak, and watch the way Hoseok studies the movement of your throat. âThey would call me a harlot.âÂ
His gaze returns to yours, an otherwise thoughtful look turned menacing by the terror of his passion. âAnd are you?â
Tongue heavy in your mouth, you struggle with the few words you can manage. âThey will make me out to be,â you begin slowly, poignantly, âand it will be your fault. Youâve made me a slut.â
You hold onto the word - draping yourself over the âsâ, tapping your tongue against the âtâ - ensuring it lingers in your mouth long enough for him to taste it. Itâs his fault, really, that you will be judged and scorned and shamed for coming to your new husband wholly impure, the construct of your virginity eradicated by Hoseokâs insatiable appetite. Itâs his fault, you think, that you want him this much. That you love him this much. Your tongue caresses the word slut like it's your dearest companion, familiar with its shape and texture, and you lean upward, hoping to put it in his mouth.Â
If he is half of your soul, then he should learn how it tastes to be utterly reprehensible.Â
But he dodges the trajectory of your desires, moves away from your lips and your face entirely, diving down to your chest where he lets his teeth traverse the expanse of your sternum. Lifting his hand from your pulse, he trades one beat of your blood for another, fisting his hand in the collar of your dress to pull it down and expose the thin bit of flesh covering your heart. It thunders in your ears, your body a storm of his making, and you tremble as he positions himself to ravage your very spirit.
His teeth leave scars upon your nerves, eternal echoes within your pores that have you rolling your hips downward in encouragement. Again, you feel him, his cock against your core, enough to have you whimpering as though you are small and fragile, not the maker of your undoing. As punishment for your impertinence, Hoseok takes aim and bites down harshly at the slender bone of your clavicle.Â
âHoseok!âÂ
âI know you, Sparrow.â The husk of his breath is an avalanche into the marrow of your bones, the memory of his teeth still reverberating into your lungs. âYou always like it when it hurts.â
Your skin still stings, yet he is relentless. You quake in his hold as he bites at the bone once again, teeth inlaid perfectly where they had been before. Your skin bends beneath the force, ecstatic hiss descending into a low moan, giving away the truth of how well he truly knows you. The pain grounds you in the moment, allows you, too, to ignore the passage of time, the ebb and flow of the waves as though the tides have halted altogether. You are prettiest when you are red and purple, black and blue by the marks he leaves in his wake, and not once, not even when he breaks your skin to bleeding does he tarnish your light.
In his arms, you are illuminated, glowing with the same intensity as the lighthouse beacon. Heâs called you the heavenly sky for the way you glow under his affections, your inability to control your power when he makes you feel so impossibly good turning you into an evening star. You often forget you are blessed with a holy gift, the goddess of light as though your title has any meaning beyond providing you a seat at the table in Teylim. You often forget this is who you really are, someone happy, someone made of magic - a light kindled only under joy.
âI will make you ache for me,â he breathes, pushing the collar of your dress lower and lower, threatening to expose your nipple. âI want you alight, burning for me. Only me.â
Hoseok kisses deftly at the supple softness of your breast, diligent and greedy. His breath comes ragged, thick in the center of his lungs where he struggles around the insurmountable longing that puts force in his handling of your body. Working his tongue over the skin, he licks the stars out of the constellations of your pores, tasting the dust, the salt, the sea. Your hands run through his hair, messing the thick strands to a state of perilous disorder in your eagerness to move downward to the comforting solidarity of his shoulders.
Grinding your hips into his lap, the tip of his clothed erection slides along your slit, and you release a whimpered exclamation as the cloth of your underwear slips between your folds. Biting your lip, you breathe deep, Hoseokâs own groan of dissatisfaction vibrates into your chest. You feel him deep in your throat, his voice alongside yours, his desire matching yours in intensity.Â
Hand leaving your neck in favor of your waist, his grip tightens, fingertips pressing deep circles into the muscles of your back. Thrusting upward, he teases you, laughing darkly to himself with a rough nip to your breast. The motion sends your underwear deeper into your cunt, a pressure to your clit as erotic as it is cruel. It sends a shiver down your spine, inspiring tremors in your nerves that have you clenching your walls around nothing at all, seeking the bulbous head of his cock in need.Â
Pleased with himself, he raises himself from your chest to work at the buttons of your dress. Your nails dig into his shoulders, your own rolling back to present you breasts to him like a preening cat. Hungry, he takes the bait, slipping a palm under your dress to cup your breast. He presses against your nipple, a small wine tumbling from your throat to mingle with his whispered expletive. Rolling your nipple between his knuckle, he regards you momentarily, studying your dazed expression. Against him, you are an earthquake unto yourself, a cosmic shift of longing ravaging your blood, and you are pleased by it, offering him a smile of gluttony.Â
Abruptly, he releases your breast, hands falling to your hips as he raises to his knees, keeping you against him. Hoseok pushes your hips roughly against his, cock a threatening force against your core as he guides your bodies down to the floor, careful to keep the shift in position painless. Once more, he thrusts at you, and you feel yourself becoming soaked, juices no longer dripping into your underwear but instead crawling slowly down to your ass. The concrete of the floor is chilled, cold enough your back and hips arch indelicately in retreat, causing you to carelessly meet his thrust.Â
âFuck,â he mutters, returning his hands to your front as he sits back on his knees.Â
Hoseok avoids the buttons over your breasts, choosing instead to undo the buttons just beneath. Continuing onward, he takes his time unwrapping you, hungry for the pieces of your body he will mark as his. The heart of his lips parts on a silent exclamation, mouth falling open as he unveils more of your ample flesh. The light from your skin mixes with the lighthouse beacon, casting shadows of desire in his eyes, rendering him beastly. With his eyes only, he devours you; your body, the fruit of his immense craving.Â
Leaving your breasts covered, Hoseok exposes your hips, your stomach, your thighs. Your hardened nipples strain against the fabric, begging for release the same way your core clenches once again around nothing at all, swallowing more of your underwear in an effort to lure him deep inside you. He meant it this way, all too aware your sensitive nipples will tease you to a point of aching the longer they rub against your dress.
The sea breeze cools your skin, so much of you exposed you feel as though you have been submerged in wind and sky. Chewing the inside of your cheek, you mourn momentarily that it is not Hoseok that covers you, not yet. Still, you enjoy being naked for him like this - naked, vulnerable, safe, and his. You open your legs further, letting the wind kiss at the wetness of your cunt, your answering grin borderline salacious. How glorious to give everything and hide nothing from him. How glorious to let yourself be worshipped, his eyes starved for the pleasure of your sex. All this joy, and yet your frustration runs over, an overflow occurring with little thought.Â
âItâs not fair,â you whine, raising your arms to reach for him. âLet me undress you.â
Sitting up, you press your hands flat against his chest, becoming attuned with the ample hills and valleys of his muscles. Hoseok sits still and proud, lips reddened and wet from kissing you. Your light ignites the flush that dapples the tips of his ears, skin flushed by lust and longing. Throat running dry, you swallow thickly, committing his unrivaled beauty to memory. You refuse to forget a single moment of this, unwilling to relinquish a single detail of him.Â
Slowly, you ease the suspenders from his shoulders, humming in approval at the way the loose linen of his shirt relaxes in its newfound freedom, offering you more of his neck and collarbones. As your fingers work earnestly at his buttons, Hoseok takes his time admiring you, a piercing look both penetrative and heartsick. His hand comes to cover yours, unable to help himself, and he holds it tightly, raising it to his lips. His eyes remain locked on yours as he kisses the pads of your fingers, one by one, before slipping your index and middle finger into his mouth. Your lips part on a sigh that fades just as quickly as it came, feeling his tongue swirl over the digits with purpose.Â
And much the same way you did not expect his touch, so too are you caught off guard when he moves your fingers from his mouth and guides it down your stomach. Lower and lower, he guides your hand between your bodies where he slips it beneath your underwear. Your breath hitches, skin wet from his saliva and clit throbbing at the prospect of tangible contact, your own hand an ominous presence resting upon your mound.
âTouch yourself,â he commands.
Hoseok is so often the picture of tenderness in the way he makes love to you, always gentle and always mired in the totality of his affections. Occasionally, he is sharp and, occasionally, he is in control - only on days when he is starved, only on days when he is completely ravenous. Tonight, there is no room for argument. Tonight, he makes himself an unrelenting devil, unafraid to exert dominance.
âEventually we will remember little of how we undress,â he explains, pressing your fingers over your mound, dangerously close to your clit. âRight now, I need to see the way you will touch yourself for me when Iâm no longer around. I want to see it. I want to memorize it. Touch yourself for me.â
Removing his hand from yours, he nudges softly at your shoulder, and you obey immediately. Leaning back on your right elbow, you keep your hand in place as he grabs the band of your underwear and pulls it down. Lifting your hips, your tongue licks at your bottom lip where the skin has become dry and chapped, struggling to catch your breath as your desire becomes oppressive. Falling back on your tailbone, you spread your legs wider still, proud and impish as you slide your fingers down your slip, separating your folds to display your core.Â
But he sees nothing as he lifts your underwear to his nose, fisting his hands in the fabric and pressing it against his face. Hoseok breathes in deep, eyes rolling back slightly in the effort of keeping his eyes open, a growl rumbling in his chest like a warning. Exhaling into the cloth, he laughs to himself, a high pitched, small sound of amused embarrassment before he falls completely silent once more. And then, he breathes in again, just as deep, just as fervent, lips kissing at the wet patch you have created.
âIâm keeping these.â Easing your underwear away from his nose, he crumples the garment and buries it in the pocket of his trousers. Cocking an eyebrow in pleasure, he takes in your exposed cunt, licking his lips. âIâll fuck myself with them, imagining itâs you and your wet pussy.â
âPervert,â you tease, jutting your chin forward in mock derision.
âWhore.â Inspired by your nakedness, he begins to undress, gaze heated and focused on your wet cunt. âI told you to touch yourself.â
Your fingers easily breach the barrier of your folds upon their release, wet with Hoseokâs spit and your walls slick and dripping with your juices. Years ago, you would have been ashamed of being so soaked, a damp patch expanding in the concrete beneath you in visible proof. But you no longer care, not when Hoseokâs expression of thirst is so incorrigible.Â
You fuck yourself with your hand, fighting the urge to tilt your head back in relief - small as it is. In the heat of your lonely nights, you find it tragic your fingers never reach as deep as Hoseokâs slender digits; yours are too slim, knuckles not nearly as rough or pronounced. And when your mind drifts dangerously to thoughts of girth, your eyes drop swiftly to the pronounced shape of Hoseokâs straining cock. Swallowing the weep of appreciation that builds in your chest, your teeth chew at your bottom lip, clinging in anticipation.
Pressing the base of your palm against the hood of your clit, you whimper. Mild and meek as it is, your fingers bring a temporary relief, this satisfaction fleeting, and it will not be long before you are begging him to fill you.Â
âYouâre dripping,â he comments, interrupting your thoughts and removing his shirt in one swift motion. âAre you sure youâre not the princess of water? If I kiss your cunt I might drown.â
âIâm in love with you.âÂ
While not truly a detailed explanation, the words carry the weight of your whole chest, erupting with little thought. Your mind offers the only logical explanation for your wetness it can manage while your body grapples with the implication of Hoseokâs mouth upon your core.Â
âSay it again,â he orders, hands tugging harshly at the zip of his trousers.
A slow smile spreads over your lips, head cocking to the side as you admire his eager expression. âIâm in love with you.â
âAgain.â
âIâm in love with you.âÂ
This time, you say it with venom, as though you want it to hurt and hope that it will leave scars in its wake. Hoseok tugs his trousers down his thighs, rising to his knees, appearing regal and godly. Freed from its cloth restraints, his cock springs upward to rest against his stomach, and he smirks, chest and neck flushed as your focus shifts immediately to the purpled bulbous head.Â
Without hesitation, you remove yourself from your folds, the ache at your core only minutely grieving the loss of your small hand. Instead, you reach for him, fingers slick with your juices as you grasp the base of his cock with a gentle squeeze. Heâs heavy in your hand, rigid in the solid way that makes your walls clench and drip once more, mirroring the way your mouth waters. Slowly, you move your hand up and down the shaft, letting your thumb rub over the leaking tip with care.Â
Hoseokâs breath hitches, his hips thrusting slightly into your hand as you pleasure him. His own hands clutch at his discarded clothes, doing his best to exercise his dwindling patience, and you repeat motion, admiring the smoothness of the skin in contrast to the veins of his shaft.
âI always wonder how you will fit inside me,â you comment, moving your hand back down and studying the way your fingers do not meet your thumb. âYouâre so thick.â
He rolls his shoulders back in the aftermath of your praise, inhaling sharply through his teeth. Hoseok is always free with his praises, showering you in worship and stating it is his duty to devote himself to the goddess in his favor. Always, he does this, and always he seeks nothing in return. But you have always sensed, as attuned to him as you are, that praise from you sets his soul afire. One word of praise from you and you are certain he could eat the god of Daeus entirely, rendering him completely human.
âYou were made for me,â he explains, voice taught and words strained. Unable to hold back, he fucks your fist, seeking relief. âYou will always stretch to accommodate me, just like your life was meant to. Just like your belly was meant to, stretching with my children.â His gaze is penetrative, deeply serious for such an obscene state of being. âYou were meant to take all of me. My true home is inside you.â
Your grip loosens slightly at his admission, lips curling into a small pout. âI so desperately wanted to give you a child.â
A choked sound rumbles through his chest, and his hand reaches yours, pulling it from his cock to wind your fingers together. With his free hand, he nudges at your shoulder, easing you back to the ground with a darkness in his eyes that has your throat running dry. Automatically, your legs spread wide, offering him space to settle between them. The tip of his cock rubs carelessly against your slit, and your focus fades, mind emptying with the single desire to have him inside you taking root.Â
âPromise me you wonât give him children,â he commands, words thick with purpose.
He walks his hand languidly down your body, grazing over your chest, your covered breasts, to the flat of your stomach. Beneath him, you tremble, the tectonic plates of your spine shifting beneath his touch. Splaying his hand over your stomach, he eyes your skin with parted lips and a furrowed brow. Hoseok wars with himself, his thoughts tangible behind the darkness of his irises, expression swimming with strife.
âPromise me,â he repeats. âI donât think I could survive the thought of someone else's baby growing inside you.âÂ
Raising your hand from the floor, you card your fingers through his hair while you squeeze your joined hands, determined to win his attention.Â
âI promise,â is your soft whisper. âI shall bear no other child than yours.âÂ
Invigorated by your promise, he returns his gaze to yours and maintains it as he works his way down your body with his tongue, kissing everywhere his hands have been. Without warning, he buries his face between your legs to bite gently at your clit, this contact a thunderclap in your spirit. Back arching off the floor, your voice shatters around his name, teeth chewing over the syllables as tears prick at the corner of your eyes. Your bones hum with the stimulation, very existence stinging and resonating, while he sucks your clit into his mouth, soothing the pain into a deep, soul burning pleasure. He swirls his tongue around it, mouth greedy and impatient, the fullness of his lips a heaven unrivaled by Teylim, and your hand tightened in his hair, body writhing in passion.Â
Hoseok releases your clit with a wet pop before he kisses his way down to your folds, thrusting the flat of his tongue between them, impatient and hungry. Mindlessly, your legs spread wider, small gasps escaping from your chest as your lungs take in the scent of your sex and your hips roll upward, feeling your juices mix ceremoniously with his saliva. Consumed by the sheer power of your need, you feel yourself howl like a moonless wolf, rolling your hips against Hoseokâs face in erratic motions, inspired by the promise of your orgasm.
But Hoseok releases your joined hands, moving it quickly to your hips where he holds you still, growling against your cunt.
âYou shall not wander from me,â he says, moving his lips against your slit as he presses you into the ground. âKeep still and let me feast on you.â
Once more, he thrusts the full length of his tongue between your walls, sucking eagerly at the juices spilling into his open mouth. Heâs velvet and silk against your core, sturdy and solid while still gliding against all the places you have needed him most, and your voice careens off the ceiling, loud enough to drown out the ocean waves. Scratching your nails down the soft skin of your thighs, you fight back the desire to thrust against his face, wishing you could fuck his mouth and press yourself against the tip of his nose. All of it, every thrust of his tongue and every roll of your hips you suppress has you moaning, voice high pitched and growing erratic.
The feel of his tongue inside you inspires the deep desire for something larger, something thicker. Your orgasm is a threat in the center of your belly, spine tingling and tightening as each press of his tongue against your walls tames the beast of your racing heart. Hoseok buries himself between your legs with a diligence that borders on hysteria, holding you down and indulging in your
Still, his tongue only just hits the place inside your core that needs him most. You want him hard against your cervix. You want him deep enough to leave bruises on your softest pieces.
Tonight, you want the thick girth of his cock to splinter your bones. Tonight, you want his cock pressed against your cervix, a bruise you will carry for the rest of your life. Tonight, you want his cum so deep inside you it burns.
Tonight, you want him to love you and you want it to hurt.Â
âHoseok,â you whimper. âPlease, I -â
Hoseok thrusts two fingers into your cunt beside his tongue, silencing you with the rough skin of his knuckles spreading your walls even wider. The contrast between his fingers and tongue elevates your hips from the floor with force, disregarding the strength of his hand. You are beastly beneath his ministrations, finding yourself caught in a wild hour and feeling as though you have abstained from him too long. He forces your hips back down with the palm of his hand, groaning against you loudly enough you feel his voice reverberate up to your tongue, and you cry out, distraught.Â
Having left the top of your dress buttoned, your nipples strain against the cloth, sensitive and sending electric ripples down your arms, your shoulders - all along your nerves. Another breeze moves through the lighthouse, and it kisses at the sheen of sweat that has broken along your hairline.Â
Desperately, you want him. Desperately, you need him. But still itâs not enough.Â
âGod,â you keen, âI need to cum.â
Hoseok hums in understanding, the vibration of it moving deep inside you once more.Â
âOh,â you whine, so small and so close to breaking.Â
Hoseokâs tongue leaves your cunt, only his fingers remaining, and he moves his mouth to your clit where he sucks at the swollen nub deftly. Again, your hand scratches down your thighs, harsh enough to draw blood. Red and angry, the sting of these scores against your flesh makes you smile, a manic and monstrous expression you hope your father, Daeus, and all the gods can see. Frustrated and feeling the coil of your orgasm tighten, your other hand slaps into the ground, gripping at the linen of Hoseokâs shirt. You dig your nails into it, pretending it is him, his skin, his cock, anything substantial to torture him as he tortures you.
Against your cunt, you feel Hoseok begin to laugh, wearing the smirk of the devil as he sucks diligently at your clit.
His name begins in your mouth and dies on an exhale, eyes open wide as you stare up at the ceiling. Vision glazed and vacant, your body trembles as your orgasm lingers dangerously on the precipice of your nerves, skin growing hot and bordering on a point of pain. You hear yourself crying, you feel yourself pressing harder and harder against Hoseokâs eager mouth, and you struggle to discern if the rush in your ears is your blood as it moves swiftly to find him or the ocean that works swiftly to keep your coupling secret.Â
And then, without any warning at all, Hoseok once more latches his teeth to your clit.
Your orgasm takes you by surprise, a wave of heat in your blood and skin, your juice cascading into Hoseokâs waiting mouth. This orgasm is an eruption, a shockwave in your soul that leaves you trembling while his relentless motions of tongue and hand milk you to completion. The tears you have held back begin to spill, soaking your cheeks as you soak his lips, a great wave over you that leaves you breathless.
âCome up here,â you gasp. âCome up here and kiss me.â
Slowly pulling his lips and fingers from your cunt, you hiss as he eases his way up your body. Using the tip of his tongue, he traces the shape of your parted lips with careful strokes, still messy and dripping with your slick juices. At your core, his cock presses, the contact sending tremors up your spine and causing a whine of pain to splinter in your throat. Granted permission by the sound alone, Hoseok delves his tongue inside your mouth and demands you taste yourself - you, your cum; him, his breath, his spit, his flavor; all of it, mixed together. Your walls clench as you kiss him, devouring him, as your folds seek to lure his cock inside you.Â
Gasping against his mouth, you feel his tip press roughly against your core, your walls still sensitive but your body and spirit eager for his fullness. Hoseok pulls away from your lips to whine a low expletive, his resolve shaking and unstable, close to shattering by the force of his desire. His lips part on his sighs, breath slow and shallow, and still shimmering with you. Already, he had devoured you, drunk his fill and yet he still appears starved. As he lingers above you, Hoseok rolls his cock against your walls once more, a challenge, a reminder that he is exhausted by the prospect of not having his fill of you.
Moving your hands to his shoulders, you press your fingers into the soft skin of his back and muscles, letting them wander down and down until you grip the rounded flesh of his ass There, your grip tightens, threatening to push him inside you lest he waste any more time.Â
âHoseok,â you breathe. âI need you to fuck me.â
âYou want me to fuck you?â he mumbles, running his tongue over your jaw before biting at your chin. âTell me how badly.â
âPlease,â you whimper, rolling your hips up against his cock, a warning against the tip. âI need you so badly it hurts.â
Wordlessly, Hoseok thrusts himself inside you to the hilt, balls pressing against you with a loud slap. You feel him shake inside you, body shivering with the sudden heat enveloping his cock. Hoseokâs moan is a deluge, an ecstatic exclamation howled victoriously into the juncture of your neck and shoulders, and you smile blankly at the ceiling, mind empty of all things that are not the feel of Hoseok against and inside you.Â
His stillness is a tease you cannot endure, and so you clench yourself around him, his teeth biting at your skin as you release and repeat, urging him to move. The feel of his mouth at your skin, the feel of his heaviness pressed so roughly inside you, as your cunt leaking over him, back down into the floor where it coats your ass in its stickiness. Still, you pay little attention to anything other than his immense girth as it stretches you, your walls strained to accommodate him like always.Â
Feeling you drip over and under him, he pulls out and thrusts back in, a knock at the door of your cervix and the sudden feel of him so deep as you groaning his name. He challenges you, repeating the motion as your bodies slide back along the floor with the force of his thrusts, the piercing sensation stealing your very breath. You are gasping as you clutch him, breasts moving against the fabric and nipples aching with the sensation, letting him push your body to its limits.Â
âTell me you love me,â he grits out, an echo of your earlier promises.
âI love you,â you choke, the words incomprehensible.Â
âSay it again,â he hisses, executing a piercing thrust that has you gasping for breath, nails digging into his skin for purchase.
Squeezing your eyes closed, your hands move to the wings of his shoulder blades and you cling to him, a flightless bird. âI love you.âÂ
When you hear yourself say it, you realize you are crying, your voice a sob of affirmation around tears of grief. It should be impossible to love someone this much, with the devastating whole of your existence.Â
âTell me you love me,â you plead, barely able to speak around the way Hoseok punishes your cervix, a punishment for abandoning him.Â
âI love you.â Equally affected, his voice warbles over the words. Face buried in the crook of your neck, he presses the words over and over into your pulse.Â
âI love you, I love you.â
Slowing his pace, Hoseok accentuates his proclamations with brutal thrusts against your cervix. Slow as his thrusts may be, they are full of power and force, a pain against your walls and muscles ensuring you will never be free of him. Tears falling freely, your breath is as sharp as his thrusts, a burn in your lungs as you struggle to contain the cosmic feeling of love you hold inside.Â
âI know you like it when it hurts,â he grits out, thrusts relentless.Â
All you can manage is a nod, a moan, the dig of your nails into his skin, the acknowledgement that you would prefer it if he shattered you. You would prefer it if he left nothing behind of you at all.
âI know you like it when I stretch you, when you canât walk for days.âÂ
âI do,â you nod weakly, legs automatically spreading wider - until your hips hurt, until you are certain your bones will bruise from the way you have spread yourself open just for him.Â
Hoseok moans as a harmonic response to yours, the sack of his balls slapping diligently at your ass. You cling to him, holding him against you in despair, the vice grip of your hands matched only by the grip of your walls. Pleasure ripples through your synapses, an overload to your very synapses, little else registering in your mind apart from the places Hoseok penetrates within your core.
âDo you want me to cum inside you?â
The pleading nature of his tone does not go unmissed, his own anguish evident in the way his hand cups your breast and his nails scratch at the flesh, wishing for entry.Â
âYes.â
âWhat if I get you pregnant?â he muses, though he remains completely sincere. What if I fuck my baby into you? What will they do?â
âI hope you do.â It takes all your strength to speak without losing your breath. Once more your orgasm has started to build gloriously around the pain of taking him against your cervix, and you need him to know that you mean it. âI donât care if they scorn me.â
âIâll do it,â he bites out - not a threat, but a promise. âIâll knock you up, fuck my baby into you. Theyâll have to watch you grow someone elseâs child. What a sight, huh? Bet Daeus would love to see you deliver another manâs baby.â
âDo it.â
You see yourself, heavy and round with his child, glowing brilliantly like a constellation unto yourself. Carrying your offspring, you would be a supernova, the cradle of the very universe and you would celebrate it with every word breaking over laughter. Daeus would snarl at you, a sneer reserved for your growing belly; your father would find himself in a rage so beautiful and blinding, you think darkness would befall the earth, this winter sudden and unforgiving. The other gods would ignore you, this you are confident of and would take with pride. Youâd tease them with it, finding yourself immensely confident in the power of being pregnant with Hoseokâs child.Â
Youâd carry his child as though this were your real pilgrimage within Teylim, your true purpose.Â
And Hoseok, you know, would be your chosen king, god of the sun because he deserves it.
He deserves you.Â
âYeah?â he moans, hips picking up pace as he begins to chase his own high. Still, he loses none of the strength in his motions, seemingly motivated by your affirmation of desire.
âGet me pregnant,â you plead, biting your lip with shame at this impossible ask. A foolâs errand, a childish plea to change the way of things. âMake me stay with you,â is your final whisper.
Together, you both fall silent as he fucks you with vigor, silent and awestruck by the violence of your coupling. With each thrust, your voices become a symphony of your union. Gripping him tightly, you hope it reaches the gods, your father, all of Teylim. You hope they see the way Hoseok fucks you, absolutely unforgiving. You hope they see the way you make a mess of yourself for him, that you have already decided on a husband and he is no god, no hero, but a man who loves you as though you are the whole of the sky.Â
Hoseok trembles against you, and you sense his orgasm approaching in the way he gasps against your skin, thrusting harder and faster and, somehow, harder into your core. You are burning with the ache of containing him, but your own orgasm is cosmic, making its steady approach with each brutal thrust. Hoseok wanted to live inside you, wanted to give you a child, wanted to watch you swell with him alone - and it is these thoughts that send you over the edge, the universe apart from Hoseok melting into a white. In this orgasm, there is no air, no sea, no sky - only Hoseok; his breath, his smile as you cum around him, his ecstatic laughter.
You imagine yourself pregnant, learning to contain a sun inside your womb. You imagine him laughing, hands and lips at your belly. You imagine him happy. You imagine him happy, and your orgasm moves over you with the strength of a lunar tide, the same way your tears move over your cheeks, torn between sobs of bliss and sobs of grief for a life you will not have.
Hoseok continues to thrust into you with purpose, the last of your orgasm leaving you in shockwaves as the motions of his hips overstimulate your walls. It hurts to contain him, not nearly as much as it hurts to leave him, and you dig your nails into his skin, demanding all you can from him with enthusiasm. The world is tilted on its axis as he cums inside you, wave after wave of seed spilling into your core as you stroke tenderly at the hair at the base of his neck. Teeth chattering, you mumble his name, shivering as he spills himself inside you, and you pray, woefully, that he kept his word and left you with a piece of him.
âMine,â he says, stilling inside you as the last of his orgasm quakes his mortal form.Â
As his cock begins to soften inside you, the hand at your breast moves gently to the buttons. Your skin burns with the heat of the saliva he dripped against your neck, and he presses his cheek against your neck as he unbuttons the last of your dress. Exposed, now, to the sea breeze, your back arches slightly as the wind and his breath moves over your nipples. His hand cups your breast, too tender for the way he fucked you, and you are certain he is imagining your breasts full of milk, your body heavy, his wish granted, too.Â
Pulling his cock free, you both grimace at the feeling, and he removes his hand from your breast to instead smear the cum from your core that leaks from between your walls over your folds. He strokes the tips of his fingers against your slit, the stimulation making you hiss and writhe beneath him in retreat, before you are crying out his name, his fingers dipping inside to scoop his cum from your center. As he pulls his hand free, his studies his fingers carefully, smirking not unlike the devil, before he guides them over your breasts and lets it drip.
And then, without warning, he begins to write his name along your breasts.
âI am sanctifying you,â he explains. âAnyone who pulls down your clothes will find me. I have already laid claim to your temple.â
Your smile is composed entirely of sadness, a hope that has made a home of despair evident in your expression. Holding his hand in yours, you guide his soaked fingers between the valley of your breasts to your stomach, where you hold him still.
âWith any luck it will be visible here,â you offer, hoping he cannot hear how remorse has consumed you.
Hoseok frowns. âMy biggest fear is that you do become pregnant and that I cannot see my baby grow in you. That I wonât be able to raise our family with you.â
Furrowing your brow, you tilt your head to the side in consideration, battling the new found grief that consumes you. âDid you not mean it?â
âI meant every word,â he promises, moving his hand from your stomach to cup your cheeks. âIâd put twins inside you if I had any control. But you are mine, our family is mine. I curse the gods for taking it from me.â Hoseok falls silent, and you press your cheek into his hand, turning to kiss his mount of venus in encouragement. âThe day I met you I saw my life with you,â he continues, so quiet, and so unlike your Hoseok. âYou are half of my soul.â
Abruptly, Hoseok lifts himself up and pulls away from you. As he rises to a stand, he is still warmed by your touch, the glow from your magic still draped over his muscles, turning him amber and yellow. Heâs incandescent, as much as a god of light as you, more regal and more royal than any man who was lucky enough to slay a beast in your name. Running a hand through his hair, he regards you with dark eyes - embers burning in his rises of lust and longing, devotion and despair. He says nothing at all as he moves, naked and vulnerable, to the back corner of the room where he gathers his tools.Â
âWhat are you doing?â you hum. Reaching your hand out, you curl onto your side, writhing in the pillow of your discarded clothes, beckoning him back to you. âCome back to me. Itâs cold without you.â
He says nothing at all as he roots around, pulling out a thick screwdriver and hammer.Â
âHe will give you rings,â he says, more to himself than to you.Â
The words come softly, barely a whisper that cuts through the air. Settling in front of the fog bell on his knees, he begins to hammer the end of the screwdriver into the metal, carving and carving.Â
âHe will give you flowers,â he grits out bitterly, âand will see your smiles in the morning. He will bring you food and nectar, and he will watch you glow your brightest. He will watch you glow each time you remember my hands on you, my lips on you. In bed, he will watch you glow, thinking itâs him, letting his own ego grow so immense he will get off on his own power rather than you. But he wonât know, not like I do. Not like we do.â
Sitting up, you donât bother to cover your naked body, the breeze from the sea cooling your dampened skin. Licking your lips, you watch as his muscles strain with his pound of the hammer. Brow narrowed, jaw set, and hands gripping his tools with confidence, he marks the metal with a certainty born from a man learning to combat loneliness.Â
âHe wonât know,â he continues, words a grunt of demand and dominion. âNo one will know that each time he touches you, you are comparing him to me. You will be remembering me. I want you to remember me. I want you to think of me, I want you to look for the light from this beacon, and I want you to outshine the anguish. I am destined to look for you the way so many people look for the North Star. My every storm is guided by you. So donât you dare forget.â
The fog light spins overhead, clouds passing by and changing the refraction just enough to see the shimmer against his cheeks. Hoseok weeps as he carves, jaw unflinching, and hands steady with determination. A lump rises in the center of your throat, chest tight with the pain that comes from loving someone too much, entirely too much. Gasping for air, you move towards him, wanting his body pressed tightly against yours in comfort.
On instinct, you give him light - more light, so much light. From beneath your skin, you become torchlight, neon, candle flame; wrapping yourself around his back and shoulders, you rest your head on his shoulder and cling to him, becoming sunlight and firewood, banishing the darkness from his mind and mouth, a lamp unto his feet to lead him home. Pressing your lips at the juncture of his neck and shoulder, you feel him tremble beneath you, mindlessly leaning into you for more, endlessly more.Â
As you turn to watch his hands, your own tears soak the corner of your eyes.
âHoseok,â you breathe, regarding his craftsmanship.
âHe canât give you light like I can,â he murmurs, suddenly so small and so young, weakened suddenly by the ever looming distance between you. âHe can give you all the falsehoods of husbandry, but he canât give you light. He canât give it back. He is not your equal like I am.âÂ
Beneath the careful, diligent work of his hammer and screw, your name begins to take shape, just beneath his. The markings are deep, thick scratches unlikely to erode in any substantial length of time. Wind and sea will not wipe your names away, nor snow nor sand. Not even heaven, you think, could cause your names to smear.Â
When he finishes, the bronze bell glimmers beneath your light, your names encased in a heart he artfully crafted. You imagine it in a wedding band - silver, and not gold. Gold, you think, is too soft and too malleable. The gods prefer it, a sign of eternal wealth and glory, but gold bends. Gold is too impermanent, value placed in all the wrong places. You would give Hoseok platinum, would give him silver, would give him bronze. If you had the power to move the earth, you would give him iron and steel, anything equally as enduring as the way you will be immortalized in ardor.Â
âI canât believe this is all I will have of you.â Hoseok stares at your names, at the jagged lines he carved into the bell, mourning. Shoulders slumped and hands folded neatly in his lap, he laments quietly to himself as though in prayer. âAt the end of all this, this is all I have. Your name and a memory.â
Raising your hand to his chin, you turn his face to yours, biting your lip as he cries freely, tears staining the softness of his cheeks with salt.Â
âNo one will have me, not like you.â âHe can take me, he can take my light, he can take my name, but he will never have my heart. All of me belongs to you. I am yours. Swear to me that you are mine.â
The hammer and screwdriver fall to the ground at his knees, a loud clank so disruptive for the quiet paradise you have built at the top of the lighthouse. Enveloping you in his arms, he buries his face in your neck, lips at the center of your throat - a place he has been so often this night you are determined to call it his home - tugging your hair back to make space for him.Â
âIâm yours,â he swears passionately. âNot a single person will have me the way Iâve given myself to you. In a thousand summers, not a single one will pass in which Iâm not yours.â
The conviction in his words undoes you, your eyes wide as you stare up at the ceiling, at the base of the light, feeling as though there is no difference between the moon and the sun, not anymore. For you, they are interchangeable, each burning in an hour of love; which is to say, there will be no hour that passes in which you do not love him, no hour passing in which your light does not belong to him and his does not belong to you.Â
âI wish I could stay like this.â These affectionate speeches tumble from your lips, your mind empty of misgivings, wishing to be as honest as you are naked. âI wish I could stay this way, forever touching you.â
âTime is meaningless,â he muses, detached and distant, even as you hold him. âFor me, this is the end of my life. There will be nothing else after this. For me, it will always be this way. My arms will always be around you.â
For him, you are glad. For him, you are relieved that there shall be no other moment than this.Â

SEVEN MONTHS LATER
The seaside feels like the edge of destruction after so long away from it, gravity pressing at your bones. From where you stand, the unchanging nature of the earth makes a mockery of your nerves, the past beating against your sternum like a second heart.
You are poised and still, relearning the way the earth is unforgiving compared to the heavens. Too long have you been removed from such a tangible feeling of living, such a tangible reminder that you, too, are made of flesh and blood and all the things that break so easily, just like ocean foam. Your toes bury themselves into the rocky shore, rooting yourself like a tether as a promise that you will not run away, that you will not leave - not again. As though it senses your presence, the sea rages beneath a cloudless sky, the sunâs rays reflecting off the water, illuminated without any need of you.
The lighthouse looms along the hilltop, and you worry your bottom lip as you study its eternal guardianship. All these unchangeable things, loyal without you, and yet you stand here, begging for acceptance. You can hear Hoseokâs words like an echo, words not yet spoken but you anticipate them, the lump in your throat sinister in its tenacity.Â
How dare you, he will shout, and the tears on his cheeks will be your parting gift. How dare you haunt me here when I did not expect you, when I had already worked so hard to give you up.Â
Promises in the dead of night are easy to make when the daylight has yet to take anything from you. The earth remains unchanged but you are evidence of the passage of time, and you are certain Hoseok will have warred with himself so completely your memory of him is little more than a ghost of a man who died the moment he woke to find you missing.Â
He used to be able to sense you here. Back when things were new and things were simple, back even at the end, he would sense your presence along the water and come running, a smile already at his cheeks in welcome. Stroking your naked hip with the tips of his fingers, he told you all about his skin would tingle when you were close, a static on his tongue that told him something too important to be contained by the earth was waiting for him. Even before he knew you, before he knew it was you, he felt it, as though he had been made just to know you, to find you.Â
It used to be the same for you, a pull to the shore and a lightness of being that always made you stand here, in this place, waiting. Weeks passed before either of you had any idea you were near one another, before youâd even introduced yourself, and now it is the same. Your body combats the change in gravity with strength, though you realize too much has changed in you for the weight to feel the same.Â
The hair at the back of your neck stands on end, rising in anticipation as the air becomes thick and heavy. You feel him approaching, a magnetic pull against your back that has your posture shifting, pulling you to your full height regardless how heavy all of you feels. Still, he doesnât close the distance, and your lips part around a sigh, silently asking him to reach for you, to touch you.
But he wonât.
Not when he thinks you are the same as you were. Not when he thinks this is all just a memory.
Closing your eyes, you turn to face him, feeling tears burn against the lids. Hoseok makes no movement towards you, and, unable to hold back any longer, you open your eyes once more, weeping at the sight of him. Chewing at the inside of your cheek, you study the way he looks at you, the way his gaze traverses your form with a pained expression, the knot in his brow visible even from a distance. Heâs far from you, far enough you cannot touch him, but he, too, remains unchanged - still beautiful, still glorious, still the sun king himself, and you choke back a bitter cry at the way it seems only you are the one who was allowed to change.
âHello,â you try, offering a weak and unsteady smile.
Hoseok says nothing as he closes the distance, eyes trained at your middle, focused enough you feel him move inside you. He lets himself get close, close enough your skin calls out to his eagerly, begging him to touch you. You can smell him on the wind, the same musk, the same ambergris, the same dust that you remember, and your hands twitch at your sides, straining to reach out to him.Â
âWhat is this?â he manages, not looking you in the face.
âI -â A small cry cuts you off, and you press your hand to your lips, forcing yourself to keep your composure.Â
Hearing the anguish in your voice, he raises his gaze to yours and you see the way he mirrors your pain, confused and bewildered.Â
âTell me what this is,â he whispers, fierce and demanding.Â
âItâs exactly how it looks,â you explain, feeling terribly pathetic.
Itâs so simple, you know. Absolutely obvious. Your pregnant belly sticks out far enough now it leaves a distance between you, a gap where your child grows the only thing that separates you.Â
âDid you come here to mock me?â he spits, leaning forward with venom.
âNo!â you exclaim, holding your hand up in surrender. âIâŠâ you drift off, uncertain where to begin. You decide, perhaps, itâs best to begin with the truth. âThe baby is yours.âÂ
Hoseokâs expression shatters, a thousand different feelings breaking over his face before he settles on disbelief and quiet rage.
âWhy would you show me this?â he pleads, sounding so small. âHave I not suffered enough? You knew I wished for this and now you tease me with it?â
âIâm not here to show you anything, Hoseok, and certainly not to cause you pain.â Itâs shocking how tired you are becoming, putting in the effort of not reaching for him, not weeping for him, not rushing to an end you both deserve. âThey...rejected me,â is all you manage in the end.
Hoseok sucks his bottom lip between his teeth, eyes watering as he lowers his focus to your belly once more. âThey stopped the wedding?â
He speaks so softly you almost do not hear him over the rolling tide, and now, you cannot be contained. In one swift motion, you reach for his hand twining your fingers together. Your hold on him is unrelenting, not allowing him a single escape. Feeling his palm against yours is all the motivation you need, a resurgence of energy you have been missing for months.
When you continue to remain silent, he narrows his brow and persists. âAre you unmarried?â
âThey were going to go through with,â you explain quickly, not allowing him any room for interjection. âThey were going to make me marry him. Daeus even said heâd give the child to a human family, make it go through a Heroâs Journey to join us back in Teylim. Gods, the fight I put up to stop that from happening. The Fate Tying went poorly,â you finish with a sardonic grin.
Gently, you tug Hoseok against you, forcing his stomach to bump against yours. His heated breath cascades over your skin, and you sigh in pleasure.
âThe child is completely human, my love,â you whisper, eyes searching his face. âThe Moirai refused to untie us.â Incredulous, you laugh, looking out over the grassy hill in wonder. âThe old crones are always right.â
The weight of your explanation steals Hoseokâs breath, and he falls against you, clinging to you as he sobs into your shoulder. Holding him close, you remember the last time you were in this position, your tears soaking into the fabric of his shirt, your hands clutching him, unwilling to be removed. As though sensing the great wave of his emotion, the child in your belly stirs abruptly, pressing against your womb to get his attention.Â
You jump slightly at the feel of it, and Hoseok looks down, laughing, incandescent in his joy. He brings his hand to your belly, touching softly at where your child had just been, and he sniffles, looking to you and back down, cheeks reflecting the light you suddenly cannot contain.Â
âItâs a girl,â you state, always wondering how he would react to knowing heâd have a daughter. âOur daughter kept me with you.â
Falling to his knees, he holds your belly in his hands and presses his forehead against its peak, too overcome with emotion to utter a word. Instead, he simply breathes deeply, wrought with bliss. Lowering a hand to the crown of his head, you thread your fingers through your hair and think that this, this precise moment, is what it means to be a goddess.
This is what it means to truly be sanctified.

holly's august extravaganza day 17: you and me (moving through this world as a two-man team)
for both my incredible birthday twin jenny (@laelipoo) and a little bit for myself! i hope you are having a wonderful, wonderful day and i wish you all the love in the world. i'm so glad we became friends and i cannot tell you how glad i am for our conversations đ„°đ„°đ„°
many, many, many thanks to jenny as well for helping me out with the plot!
ao3 | 3.1k | firefighter carlos, hurt/comfort, pining, developing relationship, major character injury (two of them đ)
TK does not have a crush on the 126's latest hire.
Carlos Reyes: an Austin local, an incredible firefighter, andâobjectively speakingâthe most beautiful man TK has ever laid eyes on. Which is, in fact, the entire point; TK has eyes and, yes, he will use them to sneak a look or two when heâs suddenly sharing space with a man who looks like a Greek god.
That does not mean he has a crush, Paul.
(and, sure, maybe he does sometimes dream about how soft Carlosâs lips look and the soft blush he gets when he laughs and those little flecks of gold in his eyes, but heâs only human)
(how TK knows about the gold in Carlosâs eyes is none of anybodyâs business)
The thing about Carlos Reyes is that he isnât only stupidly hot; heâs also just plain nice. TK canât even make up a flimsy excuse to keep his distance. Carlos is, quite literally, perfect.
He shares recipes and book recommendations with Paul, he spars with Marjan, he discusses superheroes with Mateo, and Judd has had nothing but good things to say since before Carlos even joined them. Apparently theyâd worked together a lot before the explosion, when Carlos was with the 116, and heâs âone of the best damn firefightersâ Judd has ever seen.
He even makes time to hang with the paramedics, which...isnât a new development, exactly. But it is recent, and TK is willing to bet theyâd still be pretty divided if Tim hadnât suddenly transferred back to Maryland and he hadnât taken the leap to be a full paramedic.
Even after that⊠His friends were hardly going to abandon him after he switched, but Nancy had still only been semi-included at best. Sheâd called him out about it during their first week working together, but fixing it had been a slow process.
Until Carlos came along, that is. Excluding Judd, they all regularly hang out at his place now, and Nancyâs inclusion had never even been a question. Safe to say, Carlos has charmed everyone in the firehouse, including both captains, and the worst part is, he doesnât seem to realise heâs doing it.
Heâs perfect, from his freakishly toned body to his infuriatingly sweet personality to his incredible skills in the field, and TK does not have a crush, goddammit!
One morning about three weeks after Carlosâs arrival, TK is greeted in the firehouse by the sound of a long, beautiful laugh coming from the kitchen. Three weeks is an embarrassingly short amount of time to admit that heâs memorised everything about him, but he instantly recognises the noise as coming from Carlos, even if he canât see him yet.
He saunters into the kitchen, where Carlos is standing with Paul, and leans up against the counter. âHey.â
âHey.â Carlos turns with a winning smile and holds out a steaming mug of coffee, clearly freshly made even though TK only got in two minutes ago.
He blinks. âHowââ Then, taking in the slight pinkness to Carlosâs cheeks, âAre you seriously offering me your own coffee, Reyes?â
Carlos shrugs, forcing the mug into TKâs hands. âI only just made it so technically it belongs to anyone, and I can always make another,â he says. âBesides, you look like you could use it more than me.â
His grin has TK narrowing his eyes and stubbornly refusing to drink even though Carlos is rightâhe really, really needs it.
âIf I didnât know any better, Iâd say that was an insult.â
âWho says you do know better?â
TK splutters, momentarily left speechless in the face of Carlosâs smile and the twinkle in those goddamn eyes. He turns to Paul for help, but Paul...has disappeared. Huh. TK honestly hadn't noticed him go.
He shakes his head and looks back to Carlos, only to be stunned silent again by the way his smile has softened into something else, something more.
TKâs heart skips a beat or two and he swallows, staring down into Carlosâs coffee. âWhatever, Reyes,â he mutters.
It was too late for a witty comeback anyway.
Carlosâs laugh follows him out of the kitchen, and TK wonders when, exactly, he let himself fall this far.
*
âEarth to TK? Hello?â
TK is rudely snapped back to reality by one Nancy Gillianâs hand waving violently in his face. He scowls at her, to which she responds with an eye roll.
âStop drooling over your man and come help me with inventory.â
âIâm not drooling,â TK argues, following her over to the rig. âAnd heâs not my man.â
âRight,â Nancy drawls, folding her arms over her chest as she leans against the ambulance. âSo youâre just going to deny that weird energy around you two that makes the rest of us feel like weâre creeping on something?â
âExactly.â TK nods emphatically, then frowns. âWait, what?â
Nancy casts her eyes heavenward. âYou know,â she says, âyouâre a lot of things, Strand, but I hadnât pegged you for oblivious.â
TKâs next words are reflexive, said without thought for the consequencesâthe story of his life, really.
âIâm not oblivious!â
The grin spreading over Nancyâs face rams home just how much heâs fucked up with those three words. TK drops his head in his hands and groans, unable and unwilling to look Nancy in the eye.
âNot a word,â he warns, which Nancy appears to respect, for now. TK is well aware that there will be wordsâseveral of themâlater, whether he wants them or not.
The thing is, he really isnât oblivious. He knows perfectly well what Nancy is talking about and he has often fantasised about all the things heâd do to Carlos given half a chance. TK likes Carlos, way more than just in the physical sense, and heâs pretty sure that Carlos likes him right back. It would be so easy to start something between them and, god, TK wants to. He just⊠He canât.
One yearâthatâs what he promised himself back in New York. One year on his own to sort his head out and figure out how he fits back into the world after the overdose. Granted, his sobriety anniversary is only a couple of months away now, but he refuses to give up on his promise, especially when heâs so close.
Maybe in a couple months, if Carlos hasnât gotten bored of something thatâs clearly going nowhere.
But not now.
*
âHe did not ask me out!â
âHe totally did, dude, and you know it. You want to say yes, I can tell.â
âNo, I donât. Iââ
âChildren,â Tommy interrupts from the back of the ambulance. Theyâre heading to a callout, and Nancy has not let up the entire way about something TK is certain never actually happened. âEither of you want to enlighten me on what the argument is about this time?â
âTKâs too chicken to go out with Carlos,â Nancy jumps in, before TK can stop her.
âI am not!â he protests. âPlus, he wasnât asking me out, he said we should go over to his place for dinner sometime, which Carlos does all the time. So there.â
âStrand, you are not this dense,â Nancy snarks, probably rolling her eyes. âHis exact words were, âYou should come over sometimeâ.â
âWe were all there! It was obviously the plural you.â
âOh my godââ
âAlright!â Tommy sighs wearily. âNancy, can we keep from provoking TK until weâre back at the firehouse and heâs no longer driving?â
âHa!â TK exclaims, but Tommyâs not done.
âTK, if I werenât your captain, Iâd be telling you that Nancy is right and you should pull your head out of your ass before itâs too late, understand?â
Now itâs Nancyâs turn to be triumphant as TK struggles to form a coherent response. Thankfully, heâs saved from further torment by them finally pulling up at the sceneâa warehouse where one of the workers had become trapped after parts of the upper level walkway had broken and fallen. Apparently, the falling metal had caused some of the machinery to malfunction, turning the call from simple to beyond complicated in a matter of minutes.
âTK, grab your turnout gear and your bag; Iâm sending you in with them,â Tommy informs him as soon as theyâre out of the rig. âNormally, weâd just talk the firefighters through it over radio, but given your training itâll be quicker and safer for you to deal with our patient.â
TK grins; heâs missed the adrenaline rush of running into emergencies more than he can say. âGot it, Cap.â
âMaybe try and look a little less happy about a serious injury, too.â
âCopy that.â
*
The noise when they enter the warehouse is deafening, an ugly screeching cutting right through TKâs skull.
âShouldnât they have shut the machines off?â he shouts, fighting to be heard.
âApparently they canât,â Judd calls back. âSomething wrong with the control panel, I donât know exactly what.â
TK groansâjust what they need. The sound is lost in the din, but Carlos still looks over and gives him a sympathetic grin, shrugging in a âwhat can you doâ motion. TK canât help but grin back, the mere sight of Carlos easing the annoyance he feels and the headache already beginning to build behind his eyes.
Their patient, when they reach him, is pinned under a large, heavy-looking sheet of metal. Heâs bleeding from a gash on his temple and his skin is worryingly pale, to the extent that TK can tell even from a distance. He jogs to the patientâs side and kneels down, pressing his fingers against his neck.
âCap, I have a pulse,â he reports into his radio after a few seconds. âBut heâs unconscious with a head wound, and I think there are probably injuries I canât see yet. Possible spinal damage, but I canât tell until weâve got this metal off him.â
âCopy that,â Captain Vega says. âGet ready to run a line; heâs gonna need it as soon as heâs free.â
TK nods and moves to secure a c-collar around his neck. âWe need to cut this thing off of him,â he says, addressing the team. âQuickly, but carefully.â
Judd steps forward, brandishing the saw. He hands TK a couple of spare turnouts and kneels on the patientâs other side. âCouple of you need to cover him, and yourselves.â
TK doesnât even have to ask before Carlos appears next to him, taking one of the turnouts from him. He smiles gratefully before arranging himself to provide maximum protection to all three of them as Judd starts working on the metal. The vibrations from the saw are unpleasant, and TK dreads to think what effect itâs having on the already unstable machinery, but itâs the only option they have to get their patient free.
Fortunately, everything seems to go off without a hitch, and soon the team are able to remove the metal. TK immediately gets to work, feeling for any damage. As he suspected, thereâs a pretty large gash on the manâs leg which is bleeding badly, though thankfully it seems to have missed any arteries. He also seems to have a broken wrist, but he should heal.
TK quickly wraps his leg, then gets Carlos and Judd to help move him onto the spine board. It feels like, for once, the call has gone as smoothly as possible, and TK allows himself a breath of relief as they prep to get the guy outside to the ambulance.
Naturally, thatâs when everything goes to hell.
The machine closest to them lets out a threatening groan and shudders before thereâs a loud roar and it explodes. On instinct, TK folds himself over the patient as shrapnel rains down on them, and he sees Carlos doing the same in his periphery.
The downpour seems to last forever, but eventually it slows and comes to a stop. TK cautiously lifts his head, his heart pounding, and sags in relief as it seems that the worst is over.
They need to get out of here, now.
He stands, a brief stab of pain running through his backâprobably because of his awkward position over the patientâand turns to Carlos, reaching to offer him a hand up.
Only to see Carlosâs face tight with agony, and then the causeâa jagged piece of shrapnel running right through his hand.
âCarlos,â TK breathes, horrified. Carlos looks up at him, his breathing carefully measured and his eyes wide, and TK drops back to his knees, reaching out for him. âItâs okay, Iâve got you, donât worry.â
Carlos swallows and nods, his eyes squeezing tight. TKâs heart rate skyrockets, and heâs barely able to keep his cool as he signals to the others to get their first patient out of the warehouse.
âCap, the team are bringing him out, but we have a problem.â
âTalk to me, Strand, whatâs going on?â
âItâItâs Carlos.â TK breathes out shakily and takes a moment to steady himself before continuing, âItâs not serious, but some of the machinery broke apart and some shrapnel impaled his hand. Iâve got to stabilise the shard before we come out to you.â
âAlright, but hurry. I donât want you guys in there for longer than necessary.â
âCopy.â
Stabilising the shrapnel with rolls of gauze and wrapping Carlosâs hand should be a matter of courseâitâs an easy process that TK could probably do in his sleep. But this is Carlos, so his damn hands wonât stop shaking and he almost fumbles and drops his supplies.
He manages though, and soon heâs helping Carlos up, instructing him to hold his injured hand above his heart. Carlos sends him a wobbly smile, which ends up turning out to be more of a grimace, but itâs a comfort nonetheless. Things could have gone so much worse today; TK could have even lost him, and he would have never been able toâ
But thatâs not important. Carlos is okay, or he will be, and they still have plenty of time to figure out whatever this is between them.
Everything will be okay.
TKâs back and side twinge again as they make their way out, but he brushes it off, too focused on getting Carlos to the hospital as fast as possible. Tommy shakes her head as they make their way over, her eyebrows raised despite the concern clearly in her expression.
âNever a peaceful moment with you, Strand, is it?â she asks dryly, hissing as she inspects Carlosâs wound.
âIn my defence, Cap,â he says, more at ease now that theyâre safe, âitâs not me whoâs injured this time.â
Tommy hums, then directs Carlos into the back of the rig, jumping in after him. âGet back here, TK. Nancyâs driving.â
She has a teasing look in her eyes that instantly makes TK suspicious, but he moves to comply, shrugging off his turnout coat as he does. The movement hurts, which is weird, but he thinks nothing of it.
At least, until Tommyâs eyes go wide and she stands from her seat, holding her hands out towards him. âTK, do not move,â she instructs, her eyes firmly fixed on his right side.
TK frowns, then follows her gaze down, andâ Oh.
His grey undershirt is stained with blood, and itâs difficult to miss the large piece of metal sticking out of his side. He has no idea how he missed it, but now that he knows, the pain slams into him full force, causing him to stagger.
âOh,â he gasps, eloquently.
Then, his legs buckle and the world goes black.
*
TK wakes up to a steady beeping sound, which only exacerbates his pounding headache. He groans, scrunching his face up, before slowly peeling his eyes open, almost slamming them shut again after getting an eyeful of obnoxiously bright fluorescents.
âYouâre awake,â a voice says, sounding surprised, then the lights suddenly dim, the room lit by the gentle glow of a lamp. TK sighs in relief and shifts to look at his saviour.
Itâs Carlos.
âYou⊠Youâre here,â TK states, confused. His gaze drifts down Carlosâs body and lands on the white bandages around his hand, the memories of the warehouse suddenly hitting him all at once. âShit, youâ How are you?â
Carlos shakes his head and comes to sit in the chair by TKâs bed. âI canât believe youâre the one asking me that.â
âIâm a paramedic, itâs my job.â
âNot when youâre the one in the hospital bed,â Carlos counters, sighing. âIf you must know, Iâm fine. They gave me some pretty good drugs, soâŠâ He shrugs, and TK canât help but laugh, which proves to be a very bad idea.
His side lights up, an unnecessary reminder that TK is very much not on the good drugs, and he moans softly, slowly settling back in the bed. âI hate you,â he mumbles, eyes closed.
âYou love me,â Carlos says, and TKâs heart seizes in his chest.
The silence after his words is deafening, so TK forces himself to crack his eyes open enough to look at him. Carlos is frozen in his chair, biting his lip hard, and he looks like he either wants to bolt or be swallowed by the earth.
TK thinks he should probably be feeling the same. Theyâve been dancing around this issue for weeks now, and heâd thought he had it under control. That he could last that little bit longer until his one year was up; that he could ignore these feelings that have been steadily growing since he first laid eyes on Carlos.
It was a hopeless endeavour; he recognises that now. TK remembers the fear he felt when Carlos was injured back at the warehouse, the desperation for him to be better, and now with his own injuryâŠ
He could have lost this chance before he ever got it, and TK isnât about to let it slip through his fingers now. He reaches out and takes Carlosâs good hand, startling him into meeting TKâs eyes.
âYeah,â TK whispers, just loud enough for Carlos to hear him. âI think I do.â
The smile Carlos gives him lights up the room, and he doesnât waste any time in leaning down to kiss TK. And itâs⊠Itâs everything TK had hoped and imagined it would be and more. Itâs soft and sweet and gentle and perfect, and he never wants it to end.
But end it does, though Carlos doesnât go far. TK smiles at him, squeezing his hand with all the strength he can muster.
âThatâs a yes, by the way,â he says.
Carlos frowns. âWhat?â
TKâs smile widens and he flicks his eyebrows at Carlos. âTo dinner. Or were you not asking me out after all?â
Carlos huffs a laugh, and the look in his eyes when they lock back onto TKâs melts his heart and makes his entire chest ache. âDoes Friday work for you?â
He nods, tugging Carlos down for another kiss. âItâs a date.â

Bucky
Itâs a little like whiplash, one minute Bucky is in Steveâs arms, pressed against the elevator wall, getting his mind blown by Steveâs giant hands on his bare skin and his giant dick rutting into Buckyâs, hips rocking into Buckyâs, and the next minute thereâs a crash and Steve is gripping Bucky tight and shielding him with his body.
Bucky could be mistaken, he is a little hungover, but it looks like Iron Man has just landed on the roof of their elevator. Presumably to save them from the terror of being trapped at the very high height between the first and second floor.
Except Iron Man - Tony Stark, even Bucky knows who Tony Stark is - is looking at them both with a very pleased expression and seems to be leering in at them through the service cover.
'Well well well,' Stark says, shaking his head, 'I leave you alone for five minutes.'
Bucky may be having a hullicinatory episode.
âTony, I mean,â Steve looks down at Bucky, at the pink âgroomâ t-shirt and the ring on his finger - down at his own much smaller, matching blue âElvis said we do!â t-shirt - and then back up at the superhero peering in at them. He steps back and carefully lowers Bucky to a standing position, but keeps one giant hand on his waist. âI guess this is actually exactly what it looks like.â
âOh I know,â Stark says, boosting himself up by his rockets (wowowow, Bucky is four feet from the most advanced piece of mechanical engineering in the United States right now) and hovering through the hole and into the elevator, âitâs all over twitter, genius.â
âOh shit,â Bucky says, ripping the phone he had put on silent (because fucking Darcy would not stop texting him) and sees way too many missed calls from his sister. One from his mother.
The texts from Darcy are still rolling in.
âTwitter? You flew all the way here because a bunch of people twittered about this?â Steveâs voice had dropped to a tone that Bucky doesnât recognise but oh, he likes it.
âTweeted,â Stark says, shaking his head.
Steve narrows his eyes, and the sweet open face that Bucky has been staring at all morning suddenly morphs into something much more menacing.
If Bucky hadnât just come in his pants he'd be in trouble - as it is he can feel his heart rate picking up again at the effortless authority Steve is exuding. Okay fuck, now thatâs heâs thinking about it, his dick is perking up and no, no, no. This is not the time.
Please do not let this situation get any more weird than it already is.
âTony, what are you doing here?â
Iron Man - looming huge in his suit in the tiny elevator - takes a small step back from Steve, and doesnât seem confident when he answers, âRescuing you?â
âFrom what?â Steve asks, ice cold.
âFrom being stuck in a broken elevator?â
âBullshit,â Steve says, less cold, more heat this time.
âUh, okay, look, full disclosure, I flew here in the quinjet to make sure that Thor hadnât addled your brain with his god juice and left you to get yourself vegas married to a gold digger,â he looks over at Bucky, whom Steve tightens his grip on, moving his body further between Stark and Bucky with zero subtlety, âseems like I maybe underestimated how literally you would take my advice to do something crazy.â
Steve is shaking his head in a sharp, hard, definitive no.
Bucky is letting him do all the talking, having a⊠not a great memory of what had gone down the night before (flashes of images, feelings, sounds. An overwhelming sense of comfort and happiness. Contentment⊠but no real basis from which those emotions have stemmed) and also this is Tony Stark, Iron Man⊠and Bucky isn't really sure what to do with that.
Just staying out of it seems like the wisest course.
Steve, in lieu of using his words, chooses to reach past Bucky and depress the emergency button.
âWoah, hey!â Stark says, grabbing at the wall as the elevator starts to move.
âDonât you have something rich and important you should be doing, Tony.â
âOkay, Iâm getting the impression that youâre not that happy to see me.â
âGee, you have some real keen observational skills,â Steve snaps.
âLook-â
âWith all due respect, Mister Stark-â Bucky starts.
âMister Stark was my father kid,â;
âMister Iron Man,â Bucky says, heavy on the sarcasm, âThis has nothing to do with you.â
âListen Kid,â
âBucky,â Steve corrects him.
âBucky?â
Bucky doesnât bother to nod, he lets Steveâs glare do his talking.
âThatâs a name?â Starkâs lip is raised in a grimace.
âItâs a great name,â Steve has his shoulders squared and his Jaw lifted and he looks suddenly one hundred percent a man not to be questioned.
Bucky canât help the smile spreading across his face. Doesnât even want to.
âSteve, you canât be serious about this.â
The elevator comes to a stop on their floor and Steveâs grip on Bucky loosens as the doors open.
âExcuse us, Tony.â
âSteven Grant Rogers you are trending. Thereâs photos of you in this ridiculous T-Shirt all over the internet. We need to do damage control!â
âWhatâs wrong with his T-shirt?â Bucky asks, hands on his hips as he lets Steve lead him out of the elevator with a gently hand on his lower back. âAre you being self righteous about Elvis, or about the fact that Steve married a guy?â
âHey now,â Stark says from the elevator, âIâm mad that he didnât know you yesterday and today youâve got matching rings on your fingers.â
âAnd?â
âAnd that's⊠Not normal!â
Both Steve and Bucky turn around at Starkâs words.
âWhen, Tony, in your entire life, have you ever aspired to be normal?â Steve asks, standing to Buckyâs right and crossing his lovely arms over his very large chest.
Tony Stark has his mouth halfway open, his eyebrows pinching into a âvâ over his narrowed eyes, standing in the doorway of the elevator as the doors move in and out like a concertina at the obstruction.
âAm I a grown man, Tony?â Steve asks.
Stark rolls his eyes at the question.
âHave I ever once interrupted you or questioned your life choices in the middle of a romantic interlude.â
âInterlude? Steve, come on.â
âHave. I. Ever?â
âOkay, no-â
Buckyâs phone rings for the thousandth time - his mother again - and, as fascinating as it is to watch Tony Stark get his ass handed to him by a man that might really actually be Buckyâs husband - his husband - they probably do need to take a step into reality for a second.
âSteve?â he says, interrupting the argument and drawing both sets of eyes his way, âI think maybe we need to, maybe have a quick chat and ah⊠make some decisions?â
Steveâs face freezes, then smoothes out to as close an approximation to expressionless as Bucky has seen it all morning.
It looks wrong. It looks⊠like a mask.
Steve nods his head slowly, his shoulders creeping up before he forces them back down, taking a deep breath.
Stark starts talking before Steve can say a word, âI think thatâs wise, Kid, I have some questions-â
âNot you,â Bucky says, shaking his head at Stark, âIf we need you, weâll call you, Mister Iron Man.â
Stark lifts a finger to point it at Bucky, his suit suddenly receding like magic and shrinking into a cuff on his wrist, âListen-â
âGive us some time please, Tony.â
Stark looks between Steve and Bucky and back again. He narrows his eyes at Steve and then nods once. âOkay. You have ten minutes.â
Steve glares at Stark again but doesn't protest. He turns away and leads Bucky the few steps back to his room and opens the door for him.
âShould we⊠did you want to sit? OrâŠ?â
âWe can sit,â Bucky says, sinking down into the couch in the lounge area of the suite.
âAre you⊠can IâŠâ Steve looks so lost as he takes a seat next to Bucky, mirroring Buckyâs slight angle, their knees facing towards each other.
âI want to ask you something,â Bucky says, palms on his thighs, swallowing awkwardly. Wishing he had a clean pair of pants to change into.
Steve just nods, his mask slipping further and further away as his face pales and he shrinks into himself.
âHow much of this is real?â
Steveâs face cracks, he winces, something like pain, and it cuts into Bucky. Slices at him. He doesn't know this man - at least⊠he doesnât remember why he knows him, or how he knows him, but the pain on Steveâs face reaches in and pulls at something in Bucky and it hurts.
âFor me?â Steve asks.
Bucky isnât sure thatâs what he was asking, but he nods, because he wants to know the answer regardless.
âAll of it,â Steve whispers.
Bucky has to take a deep breath. Has to steal himself.
âI want⊠I want it to be real for me too.â
Steveâs eyes snap up to Buckyâs.
âI mean, it feels real.â Bucky twists at the ring in his finger. Feels the texture of the metal, solid against his skin.
Real.
âIt feels like⊠not a mistake,â Bucky says.
Heâs trying and maybe failing to explain this right. But whatever heâs doing, it might be working, because Steve is staring at him, not breathing, not moving, but thereâs colour back in his cheeks, and he starts leaning slowly closer and closer as Bucky continues.
âI woke up and thought, you know, maybe Iâd just gotten lucky enough to spend a night with the most beautiful man Iâve ever seen in my life... and then,â Bucky looks back down at his ring, âand then I saw this, and I thought⊠fuck. I thought Iâd won the lottery maybe, or somehow dreamt my fantasies into reality. And youâŠâ Bucky looks back up at Steve and his eyes⊠His eyes are so cool and blue and limitless. Everything Bucky ever needed or wanted is reflected there back at him. âYou feel like home to me.â
âYou feel like home to me too, Buck.â
âAnd you⊠you want to stay married to me?â
Steve nods.
âEven if it turns out Iâm a complete disaster?â
âEspecially thenâ Steve says, a smile spreading across his face, reaching his eyes, crinkling them at the corners.
âNo, Iâm serious, Iâm awful.â
Steve shakes his head and Bucky nods, emphatic.
âNo, listen, Iâm a mess. My refrigerator is full of cheap beer and canned cheese, and one jar of twenty year old mayo.â
Steve is laughing but Bucky wonât have it, he needs Steve to understand the total dumpster fire that he has unwittingly attached himself to.
âNo, Steve, my bed is so covered in bike parts right now Iâm sleeping on the floor.â
âI sleep on the floor every night, Bucky.â Steve has reached out and stopped Buckyâs hands flying through the air, is holding them, bringing them to rest against their knees between them.
âYou do?â
âI do,â Steve says, fond and sad all at once, âfirst time Iâve slept in a long time was here with you last night.â He looks over at the rumpled sheets on the bed, the bed where Bucky and Steve woke up wrapped around each other.
It hits Bucky that, if theyâre married, are they supposed to move in together? Where would they even live?
âI live above my shop, Steve,â Bucky says, panic making his voice squeak.
âItâs not a problem, Bucky, we donât have to work everything out all at once.â
âBut I⊠Itâs like two rooms and a toilet.â
âMy apartment is just an empty space Shield gave me to live in because I had nowhere else to go.â
Buckyâs body is moving before his brain even realises. âBaby, no,â he says, pulling one of his hands free and reaching up to cup Steveâs cheek, âyour apartment is a shitty walk up over a bike mechanic with no space and the kitchen from hell.â He runs his thumb over Steveâs perfect cheekbone. âWe just need to move your stuff in.â
âIâm a terrible cook anyway,â Steve says, huffing a laugh.
âSee?â Bucky says with an exaggerated sigh, leaning his head in to rest against Steveâs forehead, âitâs meant to be.â
âI know youâre joking, but I honestly believe that.â
âWho says Iâm joking?â Bucky smiles as Steve laughs. âSo what do we need to do to get all this finalised? Iâm gonna need to call my mother back at some stage.â
That snaps Steve into action, he sits up straight and pulls Bucky with him, so that Bucky is almost sitting in his lap.
âWe need to get the paperwork off Mavis, we need to get our stuff, and then I guess we need to figure out whether the license is even legal outside of the state of Nevada.â
âWell,â Bucky says, moving himself fully into Steveâs lap and swinging a leg over to straddle him, âI can think of one way to make it legal.â
âYou donât have time for that!â Stark yells from outside the door.
âGoddamn it Tony!â Steve yells back.
Bucky is laughing, he canât help it. And Steve is laughing with him. Buckyâs head falls onto Steveâs shoulder and Steve rests his palm against the nape of Buckyâs neck. Safe and familiar and blanketing him in warmth. It feels like the kind of comfort that Bucky has spent his whole life searching for.
âWe better go.â
Bucky nods his head as much as the limited space will allow. They both pull away slowly, reluctantly. But theyâre smiling now. The air around them is full of promise.
Happiness.
Even Tony Stark and his ugly tracksuit and his disapproving glare canât dampen it.
âWhere now?â
âTo the chapel,â Steve says, pulling Bucky along by the hand and smiling ridiculously wide.
âTo file for annulment?â
âNo Tony.â
âTo pick up the wedding album,â Bucky says with a laugh. Heâs not even sure where the thought came from, but itâs vivid, a hot pink vinyl album cover, Bucky can see it. It has to be a memory.
Steve is looking back at him and smiling, somehow, impossibly wider.
âJesus Christ on a cracker,â Stark says, rolling his eyes, feet shuffling to keep up with them.
They all ride down the elevator together, Steve and Bucky practically glued at the hip and Stark shaking his head at them the entire way.
Itâs objectively hilarious. Bucky is holding back his laughter, but the smirk is surely stuck fast to his face.
They make it to the Casino floor, wind their way through the mostly empty gaming rooms and dance floors to a familiar set of swinging doors under a garish âWedding Chapelâ sign, where a strangely familiar man is leaning against the wall only to jump up and shout as he sees them approach.
'Cap!'
'Scott,' Steve replies, much more subdued.
'Hey, Bucky,' he says, looking Bucky's way, then doing a double take as he spots Tony Stark. 'Hey! Iron Man!'
'Who is this?' Stark asks, turning to Steve, 'Steven, who is this?'
'Hey, I'm Scott,' Scott says, reaching out a hand for Stark to shake, then pulling back with a shrug when Stark makes no move to accept it.
'Scott was our best man, Tony,' Steve says, smug and smiling.
Scott looks a little like he might faint at the title, but he pulls it together, nodding along like an excited puppy.
'Oh, Bucky, I sent you the video like you asked. And then I saw all the internet stuff this morning and I thought, well I just thought, you know⊠did you guys need anything? A getaway van? I don't know. I know a guy, you know?'
'We're okay,' Steve says, calm and relaxed in the face of Scott's exuberance. But Buckyâs too busy checking his phone to hear anymore.
A video.
Of the wedding.
He finds the text from Scott (whose contact info he must have entered as âScott - Cap?â last night). Opens the video file and watches it like a starving man staring through the windows of a restaurant as the images load and it starts to play.
He can feel Stark leaning over his shoulder but he doesn't care.
It's there. In colour.
Steve and Bucky, at the altar. Elvis between them, Scott filming from the side, a woman Bucky recognises - Mavis, his brain helpfully supplies - beautiful blonde beehive and rockabilly skirt and everyone is smiling. Laughing.
And Bucky remembers.
He remembers standing there next to Steve. Remembers reading his vows from a tiny scrap of pink paper, remembers Steve saying Bucky was his fate, sliding the ring onto his finger.
Bucky looks down at it now, touches it reverently. 'For we are but two halves,' he says, remembering the inscription, the way it had felt so perfect. He looks back up at Steve, who is watching Bucky, waiting for something, eyes shining. 'Together whole.'
And Steve crashes into him, clutches at Bucky, pulling him close and pressing their lips together.
'You remember,' he says between kisses, running his nose against Buckyâs nose, cupping his face in his hands, 'You remember.'
And Bucky just clutches him back. Kisses him back. Just as desperate, just as joyful. 'I remember everything, Steve-Steve Rogers.' He presses his hands against Steveâs chest. Against the beat of his heart. The most beautiful part of him. 'We danced together. We've been dancing together from the very beginning.'
'Always,' Steve says. Oblivious to their audience, to Scott's squeals and Stark's scoffs.
To the crowd gathering around them.
'Forever.' Bucky whispers it. Barely a word. But he knows Steve can hear it. Knows it will thrill him.
Means it, as crazy as that seems.
They both do.
And they have the rest of their lives to make it the truth.

24 or 43 for kastle from the 50 prompts thingy??
43. âAre you drunk?â [ao3]
I got a little carried away....not sorry. Thank you for the prompt!!
--
The sun has long since set by the time Karen manages to shoulder her way into her apartment building, annoyed. Itâs been a long and difficult week, and she had been so excited to get home to her pajamas, wine, and fuzzy socks. In fact sheâd been almost out of her office before realizing that her cabinets at home are completely empty. Sheâs been so busy at work that grocery shopping has been on the back burner, and she knew that if sheâd just gone straight home after work she would have ordered in food all weekend. Her budget would never allow for that--and so sheâd stopped at the little bodega on the way home and bought what she needed. All in all it had amounted to about four bags and a bottle of wine tucked safely away in her purse. Sheâd walked the five blocks home with aching hands and aching feet, dreaming of her quiet apartment. Maybe Iâll take a bath, she thinks as she shoots the broken elevator a sour look, or maybe Iâll just lay in bed and watch Netflix. Or try to work through one of my cold cases. Or read. Oh, maybe Iâll read in the bath.
She does none of those things. Karen reaches her floor, turns the corner, and her heart stutters.
Thereâs someone at her door. Heâs got his back to her, so she canât make out much, but heâs in dark clothes and his hood is up. Heâs got his forehead pressed to her door. Part of her hopes heâs just drunk and thinks heâs somewhere else. The more logical part says that she definitely recognizes those combat boots even from behind.
âFrank?â
He jerks, then turns to give her a wide, loose smile. âHey, Karân.â
She stares. Blinks. Stares some more. âWhat are you doing here?â
âUh.â He shifts, nearly trips on a frayed part of the hallway carpet, catches himself last minute. âCan we talk inside?â
There goes my quiet evening.
As happy as she is to see Frank Castle alive and well, she knows not to expect more than a friendly social call. Karen passes him a handful of groceries and digs out her keys, letting them both into her warm apartment. Frank slides the lock in place behind her as she moves towards the kitchen, kicking off her heels with an embarrassingly happy groan. âIs this a coffee conversation, or something strong?â she asks over her shoulder.
Frank carefully maneuvers the handful of bags onto her counter and focuses on removing everything for her to put away. âYou worried âbout me beinâ here?â
Thatâs a loaded question. She raises a brow. âFrank, you never visit recreationally. Whatâs going on? Are you on the run again? Need some info on someone?â If they have to have this conversation, sheâd rather get the niceties out of the way and get back to her weekend.
âNope. None of that.â Â He smiles again, nearly drops an apple, and then something clicks.
âWait a minute,â she gasps, amazed. âAre you drunk?â
His answering grin is enough. Karen laughs incredulously, some of the tension knotted in her spine loosening. As soon as sheâd seen him she had assumed that he needed something, or needed her help. Not that he was paying a visit on the way home from a bar.
âI didnât even think you drank,â she huffs, amused. She quickly puts away her groceries and then pours a glass of wine for herself.
âI donât usually,â he admits, leaning against the counter. Now that she knows what sheâs looking for, thereâs a warm flush on his cheeks and a looseness to his limbs thatâs different from his normal, tense posture. âItâs Curtâs birthday, we had a couple after group.â
Sheâs glad to hear heâs still going to that group. They settle on the couch and exchange small talk about how itâs going and how Curtis is until curiosity gets the better of her. âSo why are you actually here, Frank?â
He looks caught. Sheâs interested to see that his usually expressive face is much more so when inebriated. Every flicker of his eye and clench of his jaw gives away what heâs thinking. Itâs like reading a book on how dodgy a vigilante can look. âWell, I wanted to see you.â
It's such a line, and coming from anyone form him she would have rolled her eyes. As it stands, the idea of The Punisher making a booty call because heâs had a bit too much to drink makes her laugh. She catches the hurt look on his face before he can hide it.
âWhat?â
âOh no, Frank, Iâm sorry. Iâm not laughing at you. Iâm glad youâre here.â She reaches over to squeeze his arm reassuringly, which seems to mollify him slightly.
âWhatâs funny, then?â
âJust the thought of The Punisher making a booty call.â Karen laughs again, unable to help herself. Frank is the most intense person sheâs ever met, and she would certainly know if that was his plan. She doesnât think he would be able to hide it if it were. She looks at him, inviting him to share in the hilarity of the idea, but heâs not laughing. Not even a little. In fact, his face flashes red and he clears his throat, looking away.
âHang on,â Karen says slowly, laugh dying in her throat. âIs that what this is?â
âNo,â Frank says quickly. âNo, of course not.â
Heâs lying. Itâs the first time heâs ever lied to her. Karenâs mouth drops open. She stares at him, waiting for him to crack a smile or announce that heâs messing with her, but he just stares out the window and clenches his jaw. When she realizes heâs not planning on explaining, she takes two large gulps of wine and sets down her glass.
âReally? Because it kind of seems like I hit the nail on the head there.â
Heâs already shaking his head emphatically. âNo, Karen, Christ, I just, I--I wanted to see you, thatâs all--â
This could go so many different ways, sheâs not sure which option to explore first. She could let him off the hook and feign ignorance, maybe talk for another hour and then send him on his way. Or she could demand he tell her what he wants. Or she could mercilessly tease him--who can say theyâre able to tease The Punisher and get away with it? And anyways, heâs gotten her into plenty of life-threatening situations (even if he usually saves her from them later) so joking around to get back at him is too good to pass up.
âIs there something off putting about me, then?â She raises a brow, having only a hair too much fun. âBecause now youâre being a little too defensive for my tastes.â
âOh Jesus, Karen--â
She shrugs. âIâm just saying, weâre both single and know each other and if thatâs what this is, then you just have to say it--â
Heâs starting to look panicked. âNo itâs--â
âCome on, Frank, just admit it. You came here for a booty call--â
âHey, no--â
âBecause youâre drunk and have some excess energy--â
âItâs not because Iâm drunk.â
The game is over. Frank is looking at her with a particularly focused expression that steals the air from her lungs. He leans forward, in her space, stopping just short of her lips. âIf you think,â he rasps, and now itâs Karenâs turn to flush at his proximity, âfor a second that I would come here just to sleep with you like itâs not something Iâve thought about constantly for two years, like I would just ruin this for one night--along with you and your fucking stubbornness and your smile and how you look in those fucking--...skirts--...â he takes a deep breath in, closes his eyes briefly, and then snaps them open to give her a loaded look, â--then youâre fuckinâ crazy, Karen.â
And then he sits back, and looks away.
Sheâs sure she looks like a complete idiot, but Karen canât wipe the shock off her face. After a few moments where it feels like her heart literally stops beating, it reanimates with a pounding she can feel between her legs. Her throat is suddenly too dry, and she swallows hard. Her mind races to get them back on solid footing, but her mouth has other ideas. âSo youâve thought about us having sex?â is the first astonished thing to escape her lips.
âNo,â Frank sighs patiently, but like sheâs deliberately being obtuse. Itâs such a funny, cute little sound that sheâs never heard from him before, and itâs doing nothing for the desire thatâs coursing through her. âI think about us in every way. Having sex, sure. But watchinâ tv together. Gettinâ a dog. Goinâ grocery shopping. Shit, just gettinâ up and having coffee in the morning. Just...I just think about us.â
Itâs such a momentous confession that Karen feels inadequate to handle. Ever since she pleaded with him in the hospital, begging for him to leave the fight behind for her, she has filed away her feelings. After such a staunch dismissal of her feelings, she was sure he wasnât interested in her other than as an informant and maybe, just sometimes, a friend. Now with his (albeit drunk) Â confession, she knows otherwise. She still doesnât know what self-sacrificing, self-deprecating bullshit caused him to turn her down before, but thatâs a discussion for another time. Right now, she wants to drag him towards her and kiss him senseless. She wants to smack him for waiting so long to say something. She wants to cry with relief. She wants to make him feel validated and loved. She wants to prove to the world that Frank Castle is a good man who has been dealt a shitty hand, even if she has to scream it from theEmpire State Building. âFrank,â she chokes out, âyou should have said.â
He tenses, looking at her wearily. âAm I too late?â
She doesnât answer with words. Sheâs too busy closing the gap between him and burying her face in his neck. He smells familiar, like sandalwood and vanilla, reminding her of a different day in her apartment. Sheâd hugged him for much longer than appropriate and he hadnât pulled away. She thought maybe it had been a sorry and thank you all at once. And then heâd left again, and it had nearly broken her in two. âNever,â she vows into his skin, painting a promise with her lips.
She hears his ragged exhale, and then heâs drawing her up towards him. His kiss is soft, just a brush of lips against hers before he presses another to her cheek, her forehead, her chin. When he returns once more to capture her lips, Karen lets her hands wander the wide expanse of his chest, lets herself revel in the firmness of his body against her. Touching him like this is such a foreign feeling, but like sheâs finally found the missing piece to a long started puzzle. His hands are just as eager, running along her spine and then resting on her hips before his strong fingers sink into her hair, the others pressing firmly on her lower back so that he can grind up against her. Karen gasps and Frank takes advantage of her parted lips, deepening the kiss, his tongue curling against her teeth. As Karen loses herself in the feeling of his heat and hands and kisses, she daydreams about what could happen next. She could slide off his lap to kneel between his legs. She could take the very strong evidence of his arousal and pepper it with kisses until he begs her to take him in her mouth. She could get him just close enough, and then crawl up the hard line of his body to take him in every way possible. She could make him believe that heâs been worth waiting for.
Instead, she pushed lightly on his chest until he pulls away with what she can only call a pout. He looks the definition of dishevelled with his soft curls askew and pupils blown wide. Her chest heaves, and she bites back a small noise of disappointment when his hips cease their wonderful friction against hers. âWhatâs wrong?â
âYouâre drunk,â she reminds him unsteadily. Â
Frank lets his head fall back against the couch. His hands tighten on her waist briefly, reminding her of their precarious position--as if she could forget. She hasnât been so turned on in eons. âYeah,â he mumbles. âI know.â
âWe should stop.â
His head lifts, eyes meeting hers, hopeful. âFor now?â
Karen smiles, allowing one more brief kiss. It takes every bit of self-control in her to keep it chaste. âUntil youâre sober. Then weâll talk. But we can check one thing off your list, if you like.â
His mind struggles to switch gears. âWhich one?â
Karen kisses his nose before clamoring off the couch (and his lap) on wobbly legs. âIâm going to preset the coffee machine for the morning. Now, which side of the bed do you sleep on?â
When he gives her a tentative, wonderful, bashful smile, Karen has to force herself to walk into the kitchen. Frank Castle has never been so dangerous as he is now, she thinks, sitting on that couch with mussed hair and swollen lips. Every instinct begs for her to return to his lap and continue what they started, but she measures the coffee out and stays strong. They can finish tomorrow, but they have things to talk about.
Over coffee. She smiles and sets the timer.

Beauty
a/n: This is a gifted commission from a lovely friend to a lovely friend, I hope you both enjoy!
Summary: When you meet Jimin at a coffee shop, youâre shocked he even notices you.Â
Warnings: Jimin x plus sized reader, thereâs a bit of insecurity here but also just SO MUCH FLUFF, god, I am gonna need a tooth filled Jimin is the sweetest angel
Word Count:1670
You must have something on your face.
This absolutely ridiculously handsome guy keeps staring at you, smiling and turning away when you catch his eyes.
Is it food? God is it a pimple so big it's attracting attention?
Oh God he's coming over.
"Excuse me?"
It's physically painful to look at him, he's got these perfect lips and this perfect jawline and oh no you're staring.
You realize he's expecting some kind of response when he tilts his head.
"Uh...yes?" You finally manage.
"I really like your piercings," he says, and you'd expected literally anything but that.
"Th-thank you."
Wonder of all wonders, he's sitting down across from you and you wonder if you've slipped into another dimension.
"What are you listening to?" He asks, nodding at the one earbud in your ear.
"Oh, ah, I'm sort of picky about music, you might not like it." You say quickly.
He raises an eyebrow. "Well now I'm intrigued. My name is Jimin."
"I'm.. I'm Y/n."
He leans in further and you wonder if it's healthy for your heart to race this much.
People don't notice you, especially people that look like he does. You've been chubby since childhood, and you've accepted your body but you'd also accepted that society viewed you either as invisible or as someone to be mocked.
But he's smiling and it seems genuine.
Jimin scoots closer to you and takes one of your earbuds, the one youâve taken out, and holds it close to his ear to listen.
For hours, you sit there with him in the cafe, talking about music and other things, and heâs all smiles and it makes you laugh so hard when he emphatically tells you that Huey Lewis and the News is underrated as a garage band that there are tears in your eyes.
Thereâs this pause in conversation, this lull, and you start to get nervous while heâs just looking at you, face open and happy.
âI should...I should go,â you say quietly.
He makes this cute little disappointed sound in the back of his throat and pouts slightly, but nods.
"Can I give you my number, Y/n?" He asks, and he doesn't whisper it, doesn't act ashamed of it like some other guys have in the past.
So how were you supposed to say no to that?Â
You give him yours instead, sure that he won't call you, but later that night when you get out of the shower, he's texted you.
Your breath catches in your throat, but you end up texting back right away.
That was too eager, you think, but you see him typing back right away.
You text most of the night and well into the next morning and he's funny and sweet and flirty.
When you finally fall asleep and wake up, it's at first like it's all been some sort of fever dream, but when you wake up he's texted you good morning and you blink at the phone, shocked.
It goes like that for days, the two of you texting all night, until one night after youâd been texting for a few hours, he facetimes you.
You nearly drop your phone and accidentally answer it, sputtering a bit. You make sure the phone camera is turned from you so that only your bedroom wall is visible.
Jimin frowns, and god is he cute cute cute and you feel like your voice might be a squeak when he calls your name and you respond.
âWhy canât I see you?âÂ
He has his chin propped in his hand, smiling at you and it does things to your heart.
âIâm not wearing makeup,â you blurt out, and while itâs not a lie, itâs not like you wear much usually.
Jimin frowns again. âWanna see you, beauty.â
You take in a sharp breath. âWh-what did you call me?â
Jimin shifts forward a bit, peering into the camera as if he can somehow make you turn it toward your face.
âWhat? Beauty? You donât like it?â
Your face flushes so quickly that it makes you a little dizzy. âItâs not that I donât like it,â you say, haltingly. âI just donât think I am?â
Jiminâs eyes widen a bit, blinking into the camera. âYou donât think youâre beautiful?â
You arenât sure how to respond but he doesnât let you, shaking his head.
âYouâre more than beautiful, Y/n.â He says softly, and itâs too much, itâs making tears stand behind your eyes and you fumble with the phone, hanging up the call.
He calls back but you canât answer, breathing deeply. Everything feels so surreal and overwhelming but you donât want to stop talking to him, itâs the highlight of your day, so you text him a quick: Iâm sorry, before squeezing your eyes shut and heading to bed.
***
Jimin keeps frowning at his phone, looking at all the texts heâs sent you that have gone unread. Itâs been a couple days since the facetime call, and heâs worried that heâs offended you, maybe even made you so mad that you wonât respond at all.
He doesnât give up, though, because he loves talking to you so much, has felt this pull toward you since that day he met you at the coffee shop.
After another day of you leaving his text messages on read, he calls you.
When you answer, itâs on the fourth or fifth ring and your voice is hesitant. âHello?â
âBeauty,â he sighs, on impulse, without thinking about it, and then his heart jumps a bit when you donât respond. âAre you mad at me?âÂ
âNo. No, Iâm not mad, Jimin.âÂ
He waits for a moment, waits for you to respond, and then huffs out a breath. âWill you meet me at the coffee shop tonight? I just want to see you.â
âAh. I might be...busy.â You say hesitantly, and uncertainty rises in his chest.
âTomorrow?â He asks, determined.
âIâm not sure,â you murmur, and it makes him sit up straighter in his chair, humming in the back of his throat.
âWill you text me when youâre free?â He asks, and he feels needy and desperate but he just likes you so much, doesnât know how not to be too much, and he knows that about himself but he canât stop it.
âSure, Jimin.âÂ
âI like the way you say my name,â he admits, and his heart feels a little lighter when you make this cute surprised squeak.
âI should go for dinner,â you say, and he frowns.
It seems like youâre always trying to dismiss him, and he canât help but wonder why, canât help but wonder if thereâs something youâre not telling him or if maybe youâre just not that into him and he canât help himself, huffs out a breath.
âDo you have a boyfriend or something?â He asks, and when you pause it feels like his heart is fluttering around in his chest, something bitter at the back of his throat.
âWhat?â You laugh softly, and Jimin pouts, heart dropping.
âDonât make fun of me, beauty.â
âWhat?â You repeat.
âYou know, if you have a boyfriend, itâd be nice to tell me instead of just ignoring all the times Iâve asked you out,â Jimin starts, face feeling hot. âBecause-â
âWhat.â It doesnât seem like a question this time. âJimin, I donât have a boyfriend.âÂ
He sighs, everything feeling suddenly lighter, and sits up a little straighter.Â
âDo you want one?âÂ
Jimin canât help but feel a little vindicated at that little squeak you make again.
âGo out with me,â he says suddenly. âIâm very nice, you know. And fun. And Iâve been told Iâm cute.â
âJimin,â you almost groan, your voice sounding muffled.
âGo out with me,â he insists. âIâll come pick you up right now, take you some place nice-â
âJimin,â you groan again, and he sighs
âOr we can just sit in a park and listen to music again,â he continues, as if you hadnât protested. When youâre quiet for a moment, he lets out a long breath. âI just like you a lot, beauty. Please?âÂ
***
You being unable to say no to Park Jimin is a trend, apparently.
You let him pick you up, that night and many others, and the first night he sits a foot from you on the bench but his index finger keeps creeping toward your pinky.
The second time, he takes your hand, entwining your fingers and putting his chin on your shoulder to look at your phone while you listen.
Itâs gradual, how close he gets, how much he touches you, and then the fourth night he calls your name softly while youâre flipping through music on your phone.
When you turn your head, your nose just barely brushes his.
âBeauty, will you let me kiss you?â
You nod and tilt your chin up and his lips on yours are so soft that you can barely breathe until he kisses you deeper, leans into you.
You donât know how to tell him why youâre hesitant, why you pull away, he doesnât seem to understand, somehow, how youâre big and people see you as some other or donât see you at all, but you try because you canât stand the look on his face when you pull away and push at his chest.
âY/n...beautyâŠ.I told you, youâre more than beautiful. Youâre smart and opinionated and so sweet-â He tucks a stray strand of hair from your face and you keep willing yourself not to cry.
âJust let me love you,â he says, quietly, cups your cheek in his hand.
So how were you supposed to say no to that?Â
The way he kisses every freckle, how he moves your hands away when you try to hide a part of your body that you donât like, how he tells you over and over how sexy you are and how much he loves youâŠ.it might be a step towards loving yourself, even if just a small one.

Firen Lhain: Chapter 705: The Beasts: Â Part I / III
In a corner stood a man in a tuxedo. Long red hair shaved on the sides, and a beak.
Earnest Pennystone, AKA: Henny Penny
In another stood a woman with a short halter top, harems pants, halter like a bit about her face, and a fox tail swaying to and fro.
Felicia Montenegro
In another corner stood a woman covered in penguine feathers.
Ursa Buteo
In the last corner stood a short man with blue feathered head, even shorter because of how much he was hunched over.
Spartan Haw, AKA: Sparrowhawk
Hazel walked into the room and slowly looked around. He opened his mouth, and his gravely voice echoed around the room, "Is this all that's left?"
"The White Fang," Felicia stated, "can't do anything without the people of Menagerie."
"Ungrateful bastards." Spartan stated. "Do they know just how much we do for them?"
"No." Earnest simply stated, "They don't."
"Without us?.." Ursa tried to say.
"What?" Earnest angrily asked her. "As far as they're concerned, we're the ones who made Remnant hate us."
"They already hated us." Ursa replied.
"And pretended to care." Earnest said, "Now they can hate us as openly as they want to."
"Are you saying we shouldn't?.." Spartan asked him.
"No." Earnest stated, "But unless we can get the people of Menagerie back on our side, I don't see what we can do. Trying to assassinate the wildly beloved Headman was not exactly a bright move. What did Adam think would happen, that the people of Menagerie would just jump for joy when they found out we assassinated their beloved leader?"
"So, what do we do?" Felicia asked.
"We have to earn the trust of the people." Earnest stated.
"Exactly." Hazel's deep voiced echoed about the room.
"How?" Spartan asked.
"I will admit," Hazel stated, "this is not my strong suit. But I'm not exactly someone who gives up easily."
"Just here to exploit us." Ursa stated.
"Of course I am." Hazel stated, to surprised looks from everyone but Earnest. "We want to use you to attack Atlas. I am not going to mislead you. That's the entire point of my being here. But if you want an army, we'll help you to build it. We'll just leave the recruitment up to you."
"Menagerie hates us." Earnest voiced. "But Atlas doesn't even pretend to care about Faunus."
"That is why," Ursa stated, "the White Fang haven't gotten very far in Atlas."
"So?," Earnest asked, "we go to Mantle. There's a lot more space for us to hide out in."
"Who made him the boss?" Spartan asked.
"I did, apprently," Earnest replied, "unless you three have any better ideas."
"If you don't think we can recruit here?," Hazel asked, "then we'll bring you to Mantle. Just tell us how many people you want to bring."
* * *
RWBY + JNR + Aurora, Ilia, and Taj sat around the great table, eating a late breakfast.
"So?," Nora asked, "did Ruby have to howl all night?"
"Nora." Ren admonished.
"I didn't?" Ruby asked, a fearful look on her face, "Did it?"
"You did not." Weiss
"There was a lot of moaning." Yang added, causing Ruby to hide in her hood.
"A few howls," Blake stated, "but they were coming from the woods."
"Ooooh!" Nora exclaimed, "What do you think it is."
"It is called the Woods of the Beast." Blake stated, and everyone looked at her with intensity. "What?" she asked.
"You have been reading as many of those dusty old books as you can." Weiss said to her, and Jaune gestured to affirm the statement.
"It's only been a few days." Blake curiously replied, "Do you really think?"
"Did you find anything, or not?" Yang asked.
Blake looked shocked and offended for a moment, "Nothing concrete. There are rumours of a large creature of some sort."
"Which," Ren quipped, "could be why it's called the Woods of the Beast."
"I asked General Ironwood." Aurora stated, and everyone quickly looked at her. "What?" she asked. "Networking is the primary point of my employment?"
"Continue." Weiss stated.
"Yeah," Yang said, "what did he say?"
"Nothing specific." Aurora stated. "He is doubtful that there is anything there, but if there is, he figures it's probably a Grimm."
"He gave us a castle next to a Grimm!" Ilia asked.
And Jaune sighed, sagging his head for a moment, "All of Remnant is next to Grimm."
"I do believe," Ren stated, "that is why Huntsmen exist."
Ilia shyly looked down. "Don't worry!" Ruby eagerly said, "This is what we trained for!"
"Blake?" Jaune asked, "Did you tell her about the Emerald Forest?"
"What part?" Blake curiously asked.
Jaune then continued, "Maybe the fact that what they did was literally throw us into a Grimm-filled forest. If there is a Beast..." Jaune stated.
"And it is a Grimm." Weiss added, causing Jaune to nod.
"We'll track it down, find out what it can do, and take it down." Jaune continued, "Worst case scenario, we've got a LOT of people we can call on to help us."
"So?," Ilia asked, "you're saying you're not afraid of 'The Beast'?"
"I never said that." Jaune stated, "I'm afraid all of the fucking time, I just don't let it stop me."
"Even with us?" Blake asked.
And Jaune just looked at her, momentarily dumbstruck. "Yes, with you. You act like 4 gorgeous amazons falling in love with me is something that happens every day."
"I'm not sure when it started," Yang voiced, "but every day since."
Jaune started to blush profusely, unable to say anything. Ruby still hid in her hood, though her head was getting a lot warmer. Blake started blushing profusely, and looking around with agitation. Weiss flushed light blue from head to toe. Ilia camouflaged herself. Ren held his hand out to Nora, who eagerly took it.
"Alright," Yang continued, "to change the subject from Ruby howling, now that you've met Weiss' sis, what do you think?"
"Glad there's only one Snow Angel on Remnant." Jaune said firmly. "Though Aurora is doing a good job of catching up."
Aurora beamed with this while Weiss was flushing a light blue.
"Yeah?," Yang asked, "but did you think she would be that stacked?"
Jaune simply looked at her neutrally. "I really don't know what you expected to get out of this."
"What I mean is..." Yang tried to say.
"That you four are absolutely gorgeous," he chastised her, "and I'm not EVER going to say that other women are more beautiful than you."
Yang turned bright orange, and looked about nervously.
"I think this calls for a spanking." Blake stated.
"Blake?!" Yang accused her.
"What?" Blake asked, "If lying gets a spanking, so should this."
Nora stood up and emphatically pointed at Yang, "Spank her ass!"
"Nora." Ren admonished.
"You did promise we'd try it." Nora pleaded to him.
"What, wait?!" Yang shouted.
Weiss elegantly wiped her mouth with a napkin, "We have, perhaps, not been the most abashed about our relationship."
"Meaning?" Yang asked.
"Meaning," Weiss voiced, "that they get to see and hear everything we do. Perhaps we should not be calling them out on such things?"
"Did the tower really shake?" Yang nervously asked.
"IFFF," Nora continued, "you're not going to spank Yang?.."
"I am." Jaune said, and Yang shuddered.
"Well, okay, but still, I want to hunt down THE BEAST." Nora continued.
"Why not both?" Blake asked, as she stood up.
Jaune looked around the table, and everyone seemed eager to join in. "This is going to be a long one."
"Which means Weiss gets her first taste of sleeping rough." Yang quipped.
"I've camped before." Weiss said.
"Like that one time." Yang said.
"Well..." Weiss voiced, "Yes."
"Really?" Ruby asked.
"Why is it at all surprising?," Weiss asked, "that my family was not especially fond of camping?"
"I don't know?" Ruby asked.
"The life of the glamourous elite." Blake stated.
"Well, that," Weiss said, "but it's entirely ineffective for the chair and president of a major corporation to be out of communication for any length of time."
"So?," Ruby asked, "he's like, always working?"
"Yes." Weiss said.
"Didn't you say you were disinherited?" Jaune asked her.
"Yes?.." Weiss nervously asked.
"So?, you were planning to be the president of the major coporation?" Jaune continued.
"Well, yes." Weiss headily said.
"Wait, what?" Yang asked, "How was that supposed to work?"
"To be honest?," Weiss asked, "I do not know."
"And, okay, you're dad was always busy?," Yang asked, "but why couldn't your mom take you camping?"
"Mother?," Weiss asked, "was indisposed, I'm afraid."

Part Three
Part Four
[!TRIGGER WARNING!: This installment contains vague depictions of gore. Stay safe!]
You thought you heard someone running, heavy boots pounding hard on the ground. Who even has the energy for that, you wondered idly.
Oxygen abruptly flooded back into your helmet and you inhaled on instinct, hacking and wheezing. The bayonet twitched roughly, making you sob out before some of the pressure on the blade was relieved.Â
"There. Detached it from the fucking thrower. You still with me, gentle soul?" Ezra, it was Ezra, talking loudly, tapping your helmet and seeming relieved when you barely opened your eyes once more. "I'm goin' to stabilize the bayonet, you understand me? We can't remove it or we'll do more damage. Have to stabilize with the patcher cream."
"Told y...you to...leave--" you gasped, grabbing desperately at his shoulder. "Miss the--sling...backâŠ"
"Kevva was a martyr, you know." Ezra said suddenly. "A little bit Prometheus, a little bit Jesus. Shot himself into space so others wouldn't fear to follow in his footsteps, to give countless souls the chance to be reforged in booster fire. Always found martyrdom more trouble than it was worth, myself. Living on struck me as the more attractive option." He murmured, struggling with your suit.
The only reply you could manage was more of a wet gurgle of confusion. What was he even talking about?
"Now, we as human beings are taught that self-sacrifice is the loftiest of moral pedestals to stand upon. We are taught that puttin' the needs of others above ourselves is the pinnacle, the quintessential desirous trait." He carried on in a pleasant tone, like this was a normal conversation the two of you were having as he poured the antiseptic liquid over your abdomen.Â
It burned and stung. You wanted to scream but you couldn't draw the breath, settling for a pitiful whimper.
"I cannot tell you how many times I roundly railed against the purported divine will of that miserable martyr when I found myself trapped on this forsaken moon. The last thing I wanted was to be slain before I finally got to revel in my spoils, reduced to no more than a cautionary tale of avarice and loss in the annals of time. Lo and behold though, despite all my tribulations, it appears I was not the one in danger of being a sacrificial lamb."
The clear dome of his helmet thudded against your own, and he tried to time your breathing for a moment before he gave up and just clicked the trigger on the patcher gun. You cried out hoarsely in pain and he echoed you with a groan, shaking his head.
"Instead, that malevolent bearded bastard sent me a precious gentle soul, one more gracious and generous than any harvest, to shield my worthless body from the slings and arrows of this hostile moon. But I do not accept the debt of another's life so free and easy, especially not when it's counted against all my sins." He continued relentlessly, tossing the foam gun aside. "You can urge me until your holy heart stops, yet I refuse to indulge you in your blasted martyrdom." The word was furious, hissed out between his teeth. "You will live. If I have to drag you back from Kevva's greedy, graspin' hand myself, I damn well will. You have suffered Purgatory long enough, gentle soul."Â
With that emphatic declaration he heaved you upright, draping your arm over his shoulder and beginning the slow, tortuous walk back to the mercenary rock jumper. "Ez--raâŠ" you choked, your legs barely supporting you. "C-an't--"
"Hush, gentle soul." He said firmly, struggling to distribute more of your weight onto his shoulders. "I would carry you if I trusted my arm, but regrettably I am not at full-test. All the same, I'm putting you into that fuckin' pod even if I have to drag you every accursed step of the way."Â
Your fingers dug into his suit and you straightened up marginally. Just enough for him to get a better grip on your body. "M' gonna'-" you coughed, red droplets hitting the dome of your helmet.
"Keep your free hand on that blade, gentle soul. The less damage we do to your internal machinations, the better."Â
You obediently curled your glove around the foam-crusted bayonet, stabilizing the protruding weapon with what little strength you had left. You stared down at his leg, trying to get your own steps to match up with his so he didn't trip over the tether tube. You weren't sure whether either of you would be able to get back up if that occurred.
"Almost there." Ezra announced, making your head jerk up. You had been wavering on the edge of unconsciousness, just focusing on keeping your feet moving.Â
He dropped your hand onto one of the railings for the pod ladder and you obligingly tried to pull yourself into it after he gave you a boost, ending up essentially throwing your body forward and to the side on the floor of the pod.
Ezra staggered up behind you, fumbling to shift you from your fetal position. "In the seat, gentle soul, we need to strap you in. Can't have loose cargo when we take off." He muttered.Â
Your head felt too heavy. You let it loll against your chest while he essentially manhandled you into the passenger seat and snapped the harness around you as best as he could. "M'sorryâŠ" Your voice was barely audible through your helmet. "Can't..."
"You manage those lungs of yours, don't worry about me." He replied tersely, yanking off his helmet and then tearing at the latches on your own. "You just keep breathin'. We'll be out of this in no time, gentle soul, no time at all."Â
You nodded dazedly after he pulled the helmet off over your head. "ThankâŠ"
"Hush, damn it." Ezra rasped, pressing his lips to your forehead. "Hush. Save your energy and keep that bayonet steady. We'll be on that freighter in a tick. Get you to a proper med bay." His voice trembled.
You were vaguely aware that he had strapped in beside you. There was the soft rustle of manual pages, then the deafening rattle of the pod boosters, the thrum of the engines as it broke the atmosphere. Light from Bakhroma's sun poured in through the triangular windows overhead, all but blinding you.Â
Ezra weakly stripped your glove and then clasped your fingers across the center console as the freighter appeared, spindly arms of pods hanging suspended in the brilliant green and navy halo of the surrounding cosmos. "We have at last been delivered from our toilsome strife." He sighed. "Better days beckon us onward, gentle soul." He raised your hand to his lips, and you felt the brush of his facial hair when he kissed your open palm.
...
You were unsure of how much time had passed. You thought you were being removed from the pod, something about getting rushed through the triage protocols.Â
An oxygen mask was snapped down over your face, the whirr of an intraosseous needle reaching your ears. Conversations around you faded in and out, random voices discussing your condition.Â
Where was Ezra?
"If that bayonet had gone half an inch deeper-"
"I suggest you apply the brakes on that particular intellectual locomotive." You felt your fears ebb at the familiar sound of his drawl. "We are running on precious little sleep and I must confess to an unhealthy inclination towards impatience when I am deprived of my slumber. Now, my individual trauma can wait until you have available staff, but their wound will fester if it is left much longer." A large hand rested on your forehead, shielding your half-open eyes from the fluorescent lighting. "Take care of their potential pneumothorax, doctor, and I will be as docile as a lamb."
"EzâŠ" you whispered.
"Still tryin' to palaver? Gentle soul, now is not the time for idle conversation." His hand stroked your forehead as he soothed, "Rest now. We did it. You did it."Â
With his assurance, you closed your eyes.
...
You were confined to a rehabiter chamber for what felt like a short eternity as the freighter made its laborious way back to Central, Puggart Bench and the overcrowded wards that dotted the outskirts.
All you had left physically to remind you of your ordeal was a slow-healing wound on your abdomen and muscles that felt like they would never stop aching. You had one hundred percent overdone it and, if the resident freighter physician had anything to say regarding the matter, you were incredibly lucky to be alive.
The freighter's lung scrubber wasn't exactly on par with the level of sanitation either you or Ezra needed, so you were kept on it at all times until you could be transferred to the Puggart Bench medicog. You were grateful to be weathering the travel in the freighter's dingy med bay, as strange as that was to say. You weren't sure how long it would be before you could travel in a pod without feeling deeply apprehensive.
Once dropped at Puggart, you barely even got to wave at Ezra (he waved back with a drowsy grin from beneath the oxygen tent) before you were whisked away to a different room and hooked up to something a little more high-test.Â
Fully purging the dust took literal days of treatment. The preliminary scans of your lungs revealed what looked like thick, puffy cotton balls in the place of usual bronchioles. You could only imagine how bad Ezra's lungs must be if that was what yours were like.
The rest of your body continued to arduously heal. You spent the hours of solitary treatment quietly drawing on your memo pad. Once that ran out of pages, you began to save the napkins that came with your Pastors slurry. A kind orderly found you an abandoned clipboard and you would balance it on your knees to draw for as long as you were able before your stomach began to protest.
You did your best to not think about the Bakhroma Green moon. It was difficult, but you tried. The lushly poisonous foliage, the Queen's Lair, Damon-
Your sleep was fitfully restless, either due to the lingering pain of your wound or the nightmares that hounded you. You were unsure of the last time you had truly enjoyed a good night's sleep.
Once you had been off the scrubber for a full week, Ezra came to visit. You almost didn't recognize him sans the bulk of his suit and helmet, but the brilliant blond Mallen streak that jutted mischievously out from his right temple removed all doubt. He looked much better, which was to be expected. Clean food and fresh air had done him wonders.
"Gentle soul!" He exclaimed warmly upon entering your cubicle, his voice rasping slightly, "all those days of good behavior paid off. Your jealous warden has finally deemed me worthy of entry into your domain."Â
"Good to see you too, Ezra." You replied with a smile, raising an eyebrow at the flowers he carried. "I won't take up much of your time, obviously you've got places to be." What was that weird pang in your chest? Were you jealous? Why would you be jealous?Â
"Your modesty, while one of your finest qualities, wounds me deeply. These are for you, gentle soul." Ezra placed a hand over his heart, bowing grandly as he presented you with the bouquet.Â
"F-For me? Oh." You felt a little ashamed of your strange jealousy now, fumbling to take the flowers from him. "These are so beautiful, you...you didn't have to, you know." You murmured, burying your nose in the soft petals.Â
"What better way to celebrate you bein' on the mend?" He inquired incredulously, pulling up the chair beside your bed.Â
"I'm kind of surprised you're still here, honestly." You confessed.Â
"Whyever for?"
"Well I just...I assumed you would have set back out in search of the next big thing." You twiddled your fingers, keeping your eyes on the flowers.Â
"I am full of surprises, I suppose. Oh! And in that vein." Ezra tugged free a long, flat box from inside the (obviously very new) blazer he wore. "Another surprise."
The box was wrapped simply in plain paper and twine, a bit like all your sketchpads had been. "Ezra-" you began to protest.Â
He waved off your words though, gesturing impatiently for you to rip off the paper. "I have been burstin' at the seams to give this to you, gentle soul. Do not make me wait one iota longer, I implore you."
Laughing a little at his enthusiasm, you obliged. Your laughter caught in your throat as you turned the brightly-colored box over, the graphics on the front proudly announcing the contents. "This...Th-This isâŠ" You stammered, swallowing hard. "I...Ezra-"
"It's the draw-pad! Y'know, the one we discussed. Brand new, hot off the line." Ezra looked insanely pleased with himself, fidgeting in the seat. "I saw it and I knew you needed it."
"Ezra, this is too much." You tried to sound like you disapproved, but you were relatively certain your fingers reverently tracing the brilliant logo gave you away. Just the box alone looked so crisp, the edges still sharp instead of crushed in and rounded with age.
"Now, this gift does come with a request." He drawled from his spot beside your bed. You glanced up, that old wariness creeping back in. "I want you to familiarize yourself with this tool. Not sure how long it'll take. I have faith in your tenacity and ability to adapt, however. Once you're confident in your skill, I would be most obliged if you would consider a solicitation of partnership. "Â
"Part...nership?" You repeated, thoroughly confused.
Ezra nodded. "Yes, gentle soul. I am penning a semi-fictitious memoir and it would add a certain...gravitas if your sketches graced the pages as well, you understand."
You fairly erupted with excitement, "I would love to!" Your enthusiasm jerked to a sudden stop as you remembered just where you were, and how much debt you were probably in. "But I...I can't." You finished sadly, stroking the brightly-colored illustrations on the front of the draw-pad box one last wistful time before you pressed it back into his hands. "I'm sorry Ezra, I need to hurry up and heal so I can hurry up and find another job, work through paying off this treatment bill--"
"Gentle soul, I don't think you have a full grasp of your situation." Ezra interjected. "You are an incredibly rich individual." You stared at him, not entirely registering his words. "Have you truly forgotten just how much of the Queen your deft little hands plundered?"
"That's not mine, that's y-"
"Kevva above, gentle soul. If not for your steady skinnin' and de-blisterin', we wouldn't have secured a damn thing." Ezra leaned back in his chair, lacing his fingers. "I turned a handsome profit as well, mind you. I am quite comfortably off with my harvest as it is. But you, gentle soul, youâŠ" He cleared his throat. "I took the liberty of arrangin' an account for you while you were indisposed."
"There was enough for an account?" You squeaked.Â
Ezra's laugh sounded raw. "The wonder in your eyes! I wish you could see yourself. Give me a moment, I'll pull up the numbers." He had apparently gotten one of those new, touchscreen Servs. He didn't even need a cable! You watched apprehensively as he tapped away at the tablet, swiping through a few menus.Â
When he tilted the screen to show you your account, you were relatively certain you had gone into shock. You knew your mouth was opening and closing, but you couldn't seem to form any words.
"I daresay you may be able to afford your hospital bill." The man said dryly after watching you gawk for several long minutes. "And perhaps a few meager indulgences on top of that."
"That's...that can't be right." You whispered, reaching out to touch the numbers. Ezra chuckled when your clumsy fingers accidentally brought up another menu, the older man easily dismissing it.Â
"It is indeed correct, gentle soul. The exchange was the cleanest I've ever done, and sported the highest rates I've ever encountered. It seems we returned from the Bakhroma Green in the nick of time, in more ways than one."Â
"Ezra, that's...I-I've never even dreamed of having so many points. IâŠ" you trailed off, biting your lip. Tears welled up in your eyes and, for the first time since Damon had been killed, you started to cry in earnest.
Ezra's hand rested on your arm after a moment and you let yourself be eased into his embrace, sobbing against his shoulder. "Steady now, gentle soul. You just let it all out. It's over, you understand?" He soothed, cupping the back of your head. "Over and done with. Your perdition is at its end. You are free from those terrible burdens."Â
"I just...this doesn't even feel real." You hiccupped. "I feel like I'm g-gonna' wake up in that pod all over ag-gain."
"I know that sensation all too well. My sleep is poor, my dreams fraught with dark recollections." Ezra admitted quietly. "Safety and stability are luxuries I have not been able to afford for many years. Now that I have them, I am...unsure of what to do with them." He sighed, his chin resting on the top of your head. "We have endured so much worse than having a little good fortune, yet upon bein' confronted with it, we do not feel worthy."
You nodded into his shoulder. It was no surprise that he would know exactly how to put into words what you had been feeling. You jolted abruptly when you realized which shoulder you were molesting. "Oh! Your arm, I'm so-"
"Don't you fret, gentle soul." He released you and carefully slid his arm out of his blazer, the barest wince betraying him as he flexed the limb freely. "I'm on the mend, with a...zeal I did not realize I possessed. The matron in charge of my circulatory rehabilitation seems hell-bent on gettin' me to break a sweat." Ezra sounded rueful. "I'm just glad I can breathe unaided once more. I'll never take my lungs for granted ever again."
...
You doused the eggs with the brilliant orange sauce, shoveling a forkful into your mouth and groaning in appreciative delight.Â
"Now normally, condiments are a compliment to the dish." Ezra delicately gestured at your orange-stained plate with his fork. "With you however, condiments appear to be the main course." He teased. Ezra had offered to take you out for breakfast on the morning of your release, he called it a daring escape from the confines of modern medicine. Hence your current locale. You had, however, insisted that the two of you split the bill.
"After so long eating Pastors Calori-pouches and bits bars, I...I need the color just as much as I need the flavor, y'know?" You mumbled around your mouthful. "My tastebuds are all brand new again."
"I meant no disrespect, gentle soul." Ezra reached across the table with a paper napkin and you jerked back on reflex, laughing awkwardly as you tried to play off your sharp reaction. He cocked his head, eyebrows drawn quizzically tight. "I said I would not ask, and I will not break that promise." He murmured, tucking the napkin into your limp hand instead. "If ever there is anything I can do though, anything I can say to...to ease these burdens you carry on your body, all you need do is ask."
This was far too serious of a topic to be discussing in a greasy diner with bright orange hot sauce dripping off your chin.Â
Ezra skewered a bite of flapjack with his fork, dipped it in the vibrant condiment that smeared your dish and then popped it into his mouth. You gawked at him as he chewed, his eyes idly roaming the diner. You could take the man out of the communal mining canteen, but you couldn't take the communal mining canteen out of the man, you supposed. You remembered all too well the stands worth of others pilfering off your own tray.
"I know you are no doubt eager twice over to get your mitts on my draft and begin your creative process, but I must insist we allow you the time to reacclimate to city livin'." He changed the subject deftly, his fingers drumming on the scarred diner table as he spoke. "Elsewise you may just end up sealin' yourself into a studio like a cask of Amontillado and drawin' the day away." His eyes wandered back to your face. "Have you given any more consideration to which ward you might prefer to hang your hat in?"Â
You gulped down a bite of toast before shaking your head. "I...I looked through the listings two days ago but I don't...I mean, I know I can afford to, butâŠ" you trailed off.Â
"Livin' alone holds no allure." Ezra's tone was sympathetic. He steepled his hands on the tabletop. "Permit me to suggest an alternative, gentle soul." You inclined your head. "We are two wandering drifters that, through sheer grit and a healthy sprinkling of providence, have managed to slog through hell together and survive without growing to loathe each other's company."Â
You stared at him blankly, sponging the sauce off your chin. Ezra settled back in the booth, his body language enviably relaxed.Â
"I am more than willin' to open my humble abode to you. For a few stands or simply until you find yourself despising my lugubrious company." He held up a hand as you opened your mouth. "I offer without any malice or intent of predation, gentle soul. I know that the return to non-floater spaces is not often an easy one, and I strongly suspect that you have been preyed upon in the past."
"I know you're not like that." You blurted out, flushing immediately afterwards.
Ezra raised an eyebrow. "I am grateful you don't lump my gregarious self in with the refuse, gentle soul."
"I just...I mean you've done so much for me already." You continued helplessly. "I'm in your debt, Ezra. By a lot."
"Nonsense." He scoffed. "Without you, we never would have escaped the Green! If we are to speak of debts and debtors, I must reason that I am still in yours. Shooting me would have been a ludicrously simple task, as I pointed out when we were still in that Kevva-forsaken place. Never mind the steady-handed salvage of my arm, your heroic duel with Inumon-"
"Oh yes, nothing more heroic than getting three-quarters killed by a grungy Krebine bayonet." You interrupted him dryly. "While hopped up on Brism."
Ezra chuckled. "Modest as ever!" He quickly sobered, his eyes serious. "My lodgings are more than adequate to house another individual, should you decide to grace me with your presence."
...
You didn't really have any possessions, which made your move relatively straightforward. All you had was your helmet, your suit, your underclothes and the contents of the pockets of said suit. Mercifully, everything had been decontaminated, so you didn't have anything to fear from throwing your familiar kit back on.
"I will offer you a change of clothes, but! We must venture out and acquire you new attire at your earliest convenience." Ezra insisted, already rummaging through his laughably barren closet even as you protested. "I doubt you wish to eternally linger in my dubious, threadbare garb." He suddenly stopped, snapping his fingers. "Wait. No. Kevva, we can order on the Serv. Unless you prefer the torment of physical fitting rooms?" He queried with a grimace, making you laugh.
You found yourself curled up on the couch several hours later, clad in one out of his two 'casual' shirts and your thermal leggings. You held the Serv tablet carefully in your hands as Ezra swiped through page after page of various clothing, the precocious man enthusiastically supporting any item you expressed interest in.Â
"This will at least tide you over until you feel more comfortable wanderin' the streets of the Pug again. We should also find you some underthings and socks." He mused, tapping the appropriate area on the screen to bring up the search option. "I'll leave you to that, gentle soul." You hesitantly took over from him and he rose from the couch, stretching with a quiet groan. "Tea? I feel inordinately cozy right now." He offered cordially.Â
"Mmhm." You nodded, a little distracted by the waves of choices available to you. Granted, at this stage all you needed were a few essentials. Undergarments that would hold up in the wash, good socks to ward off the chill. "Should I get shoes too, or wait until I go out for that?" You called.
"I feel it would be prudent to dally on that particular front." Ezra drawled from the kitchen. "It's best to ensure a proper fit in person if at all possible. Though, I hardly need to tell you that." He stuck his head back out through the doorway after a moment. "Toiletries tab should be the second to last on the right."
"I mean, I took the toothbrush from the hospital so I'm probably fine for-" His raucous laughter interrupted your reasoning and you scowled at him, uncertain of what could be so funny.Â
"You've got more funds than most people would see in six lifetimes, and yet you purloined the toothbrush from your hospital room." Ezra managed to say after a few moments. "Floater habits die hard, eh gentle soul?"
Against your will, you felt giggles bubbling in your chest and you huffed out a breath, trying to ward them off. "Shush, you...you!" You retorted lamely, losing your battle with your own laughter. "Stop judging me, your moral high ground is subterranean."
"Subterranean, I like that!" Ezra exclaimed, his eyes shining with good humor as he passed you a plain white mug full to the brim with tea. "I'll have to pilfer that for my illustrious tale. Give you full credit, naturally."
You smiled at him over your mug. "You'd better."
He pressed a hand to his chest, feigning hurt. "I am a man of subterranean high ground, true enough. But I am a man of my word!"

Dear Kuroo,
If youâre reading this, Iâll be gone, and Iâll be finally fulfilling your wish for me to use your first name
I wish I had kissed you that night on the dorm roof, you know?
The wind whipped around the two of them, biting into their coats and making Tetsurouâs hair even messier, if the bedhead gods would even allow that. Kenma wheezed like a broken record as he trudged up the last few steps, groaning as he collapsed next to Tetsurou on the ice-cold concrete, breath coming out in short, panting puffs.
âWhy are we here, Kuroo?â he asked tiredly.
âKenma, look! We can see the entire city from here! I come up here to think sometimes, or when I canât sleep.â Tetsurou exclaimed.
As Kenma sat up from his prone position on the floor, he caught sight of the twinkling lights of Tokyo. It truly was beautiful, like jewels spilling out of a childâs toy box and catching on an ethereal light millions of kilometers away.
Tetsurou turned to look at Kenma, and the slight movement caused a bit of air to breeze through Kenmaâs hair. He realized that they were oh-so-close, close enough that he thought he could count the individual eyelashes, as numerous as the stars, close enough that he could lean in andâŠ
Kenma turned away, and for a moment, Tetsurouâs heart dropped. But then, Kenmaâs soft voice filled the air.
âNot like this, Kuroo.â
Tetsurou backed up. For Kenma, he would wait forever.
He didnât know how literal that would become.
Iâm sorry Iâm so selfish. I wish I couldâve let you go, let you move on, but I have so many things I wish I couldâve said to you.
Do you know that the day I knew I was in love with you, it wasnât anything special? I know that I always say that I want something âinterestingâ and that boring isnât for me, but that day, we were doing the most mundane things.
It was the time we binged the horror movies and you were screaming the entire time. Do you remember? Do you remember how I held your hand, even though I was tired? Do you remember how I ignored my parentâs calls?
Do you remember how you smiled at me?
Tetsurou plopped down on the couch. âKYANMAAAAAA!â he called into the kitchen, where the bleached-hair male was making popcorn for their horror movie night. âItâs about to start, come on!â
From the other room, Kenma sighed. âKuroo, youâre the one who insisted that we âhad to haveâ popcorn for horror movie night,â he said as he walked into the room carrying an overflowing bowl of said snack.
Without replying, Tetsurou grabbed an overflowing handful of popcorn and stuffed it into his mouth. Kenma sniffed. âHave some manners and stop eating like a 19th century barbarian, wonât you?â
Tetsurou rolled his eyes and patted the spot next to him. âCome on, Kenma! I even got your favorite blanket.â Kenma reluctantly sat down next to him, closer than he probably should have if he had wanted to keep his distance.
As the movie progressed, Tetsurou got increasingly louder and closer to Kenma, ending up clutching Kenmaâs arm as a clown jumped out of nowhere and blood sprayed all over the screen. Suddenly, the suspenseful atmosphere was broken by the insistent ringing of Kenmaâs phone. Kenma glanced at the screen, then put it on silent.
Tetsurou peeked at the device. âHey, arenât those your parents? Donât you have to pick it up?â
âNah.â Kenma replied shortly.
Tetsurouâs face broke out in a radiant smile, one that was genuine and looked like warm honey and bright days laying in sunflower fields.
âYou know you looooove me, Kenma!â
He hoped there was some truth behind those words.
Iâm grateful to the universe for pulling us together, even though sometimes I wish they hadnât.
If we had never met that day in lab, I wouldnât have stayed so long and let myself be broken more.
And you wouldnât be hurting now.
Iâm sorry, Tetsurou.
Tetsurouâs ears perked up as he heard an emphatic curse word filled his ears. Oya? What was this? He glanced over and caught sight of a boy with bleached hair and dark roots growing out shaking his hand. Oh wow, cute. Wait, what?
Tetsurou knew he was bisexual, but heâd never had this reaction so soon after just seeing someone for the first time. Whatever. The boy probably needed help anyways, and Tetsurou was just this kind.
He sidled up next to him. âNeed some help?â he asked.
The boy glanced up at him in shock and actually hissed. âIâm doing fine just the way I am.â
Tetsurou put his hands up in a gesture of surrender, âHey, just offering. Also, that isn't sodium. Kuroo Tetsurou, by the way.â
In the end, Tetsurou ended up helping Kenma the entire class, even through the smaller boyâs (half-hearted) protests.
He also figured out why Kenma intrigued him so much.
Hey, donât beat yourself up for this, okay? It was inevitable.
You helped me so much, Tetsurou. Even though it hurt to stay for so long, I also saw so many beautiful things with you. Thanks to you, I was happy before I had to leave.
If youâre still not convinced, do you remember that day when Akane wouldnât stop trying to touch me?
That was just one of so many times you saved me, Tetsurou.
Tetsurou ran after Kenma, calling his name (softly, he knew Kenma could be set off by noises sometimes). There was a girl in Kenmaâs group in Business Management class, and she couldnât seem to take a hint, always trying to toss an arm around his shoulders or tug him somewhere.
(Tetsurou did all that, but he knew that if Kenma actually didnât want him to, heâd know by now.)
He found the smaller boy crouched in an empty classroom, arms over his head. âHey, hey, Kenma. Itâs okay. Sheâs gone now.â he said gently, kneeling down next to him.
âCan I touch you?â Tetsurou asked tentatively.
When he got no response, just a blank stare and tears running down Kenmaâs face, Tetsurou sat down next to him, leaving a careful distance between the two of them.
âYou know, I saw this new game at the electronics store the other day.â he said, trying to distract Kenma. âI think itâs the newest version of Mario Kart? If you want to, we can go pick it up this Friday then spend the entire Saturday playing.â
Still no response. Kuroo tried another tactic.
âIâll buy you apple pieâŠâ he attempted bribing.
âK-Kuroo?â came a muffled, broken voice next to him.
âYes, kitten?â Kuroo asked, immediately attentive.
âCan you just⊠hold me?â
âOf course.â
That day, Tetsurou resolved to never let Kenma face anything alone again.
I told my parents about you. We both know how well that went. Thereâs a box of things from my childhood that I want you to have. Theyâll mail it to your dorm.
There are so many things I wish that we could have done together that we never will. The first of those is that I wish I could have brought you home to my parents, but thatâs not possible.
Did I ever tell you what they said that day?
Tetsurou paused outside of Kenmaâs dorm room, apple pie in hand. He hadnât dropped by in a week - finals were a bitch - and had planned to surprise Kenma with some of his favorite dessert as an apology for flaking on their weekly horror movie night.
The sound of his name paused Tetsurou in his tracks.
âMom, I swear, Kuroo-san isnât like that - and even if it was, itâs got nothing to do with you.â
âM- Oh, Dad. Dad ! Uh-huh.â
âIâve told you before, hanging out with a bisexual person who I might like will not turn me any gayer.â
âMom, please, youâll like him, heâs nice, has a great sense of humor - heâll talk volleyball with Dad, Mom, can you please just try to listen?â
The sound of a phone hitting a wall.
Even though we never got to be together, thank you for the memories, Tetsu.
I hope you didnât have to see me in the end.
Cold, so cold.
Why was his hand so cold?
Deft, agile, flying across a screen-
Alone.
Left alone, both searching for a way to pick the broken pieces up.
Why, why, why?
Why didnât you tell me?
Why didnât you let me help?
Why now?
Why, why, why?
Why wasnât I enough?
Because I love you, so much that I know that you deserve someone who can give you all of themself, not the jagged edges and fragmented pieces that I wouldâve handed over without a second thought if I had stayed.
One day, I hope we can meet again when Iâm good enough for you.
I love you, Kuroo Tetsurou.
Kenma.
The two of them laid in a field of flowers, heads turned toward each other and bodies curled so that they looked like two sides of a heart, reaching for each other, yet with a gap that felt like a million light years separating them.
âHey, KurooâŠâ
âYeah?â
âNothing.â
I really tried.

The Miys, Ch. 90
The more chapters I post, the weirder that number feels. I swear.
âHave a good night, Grandma Kim,â I smiled from the door and waved as she and Lyric made their way into the stream of foot traffic in the corridor. Conor had just come home from work, so I had the obligatory two people to keep any eye on me for the night. Turned out that my mandatory escorts were not only for travelling to and from anywhere - and locking the door to my quarters wasnât considered enough, either, since âToo many people have permission to just walk in,â as Xiomara pointed out.
When I turned around, both men were already seated at the table, a small and tidy dinner of roast, boiled potatoes, and salad waiting. âNo GK?â Conor frowned, pointing at a fourth place setting.
ïżœïżœïżœShe said she had to get to another appointment,â I explained. With a groan, he reached down. To my surprise, he picked a fifth place setting off the floor. âWait, you set a plate for Lyric? You donât even do that for Mac!â
Jokingly, he shook a finger at me. âThat catâs a damned menace,â he grumbled. âBesides, we all know Mac eats from whatever and whoeverâs plate he wants. He doesnât need his own.â
Maverick just smiled at his back as the taller man put the plates and silverware away. âSays the person who always saves an entire serving of everything for the âdamned menace,â as you put it.â
âHe likes my plate better.â With a wink and playful grin, he sat down and started slicing the roast.
Smiling lightly, Maverick brushed his hair out of his face and turned to me. âStuff better between you and Tyche?âÂ
Stabbing a potato, I shrugged before wobbling my hand a bit. âKind of? Weâre still working through a game of Twenty Thousand Questions, but we arenât mad at each other anymore. So thereâs that.âÂ
âYouâve been in a noticeably better mood, at least.â
I scowled as he set some salad on my plate. âI havenât had five minutes to myself since the incident with Charly. Thatâs going to make anyone cranky.â
âYou didnât help when you put that bloke flat on his back, love,â Conor chided gently. âOne slice or two?â
Eyeballing how thick he cut them, I thought for a second. âOne, for right now? With gravy?â
âWhat heathen doesnât put gravy on roast?â was the scoffed answer.
Maverickâs head snapped up, half a slice of meat hanging out of his mouth. âEe guy ah even eh own eye ussoom gayey.â
âBabe, please cut the rest of that up before you chokeâŠâ I begged, looking away. The military had done horrible things to his table manners, but at least he kept them isolated to âprivateâ meals. âOn the topic of Tyche, we fence twice a week while Arthur scowls at us or Coffee pretends to ignore us and read a book. I ask her questions, and she whallops me when I guess wrong.âÂ
âAnd why is your sainted best friend scowling at you?â Conor stabbed half a potato and shoved it in his mouth, staring at my skeptically.
I stabbed my own potato before cutting it carefully in half. âHe may prefer saber.â
âEhrr oaf.â
âMaverick,â I sighed without looking over. âI am begging youâŠâ A snort of laughter forced me to surrender and turn towards him. âYou shit.â
He was sticking his tongue out at me, mouth clearly empty. After I stared long enough, he lost his composure and started laughing, squeezing my upper arm with one hand. âIâm sorry, Sophia. Iâll stop, I swear.â Briefly managing a serious face, he ran a hand down and then across his chest. âCross my heart.â
âKingâs X,â Conor corrected.
All I could do is roll my eyes. âItâs the same thingâŠâ
âStill tense, huh?â
âA little,â I admitted softly. I usually would be laughing and joking with them - who could you be gross and ridiculous around, if not your loved ones? - but I just couldnât right then. âI think being watched all the time is making me feel watched all the time. Like I always have to have my public face on.â
Conor hummed, rubbing the arm facing him. âMaybe we can think of something to let you have a bit of time to yourself.â
âWe could have the sensors monitor you, have one of Miys specifically keeping a watch on that?â
I shook my head. âThatâs literally how I met you, remember? Someone destroyed the navigation sensors, and hacked the monitoring ones in order to destroy the replacement parts. Xiomara will never agree.â
âDamn it,â Maverick swore softly. âWe can at least leave the room?â
Dropping my fork, I threw my hands in the air. âAnd go where? Itâs not like you can leave our quarters.â
âSheâs right. And we canât even go in the bedroom and leave her out here⊠If we arenât in the same room with her, we have to be in one closer to the exit.â Conor pointed over his shoulder with a fork before using it to dig into his salad. âMeaning she can be in the bathroom or bedroom alone.â
âAt which point I may as well be a prisoner.â Â My frustration was vented against my slice of roast, and I absolutely did not cut it more aggressively than strictly necessary.
With a wince, Maverick slowly lowered his hands from where they had been covering his ears. His eyes darted to the knife that was now laying beside my plate, clearly trying to figure out how to take it away from me. âMore potatoes?â
Clearly discretion was the better part of valor in his case.
âIâm fine,â I mumbled, prodding the lumps of formerly-roast on my plate.
âWeâre going to get through this, Sophie, I promise.â Conor stood, but rather than trying to approach me, he stepped into the kitchen. When he returned, he had a plate of soft rolls. Tearing one in half, he started scooping the massacred remains of my dinner onto it before handing it to me. âThere. All better.â
I gave him a watery smile as he set it on my plate. âIâm sorry Iâve been such a grumpy bitch lately,â I whispered. Glancing up, I could see them exchanging puzzled looks. âOh come on, donât pretend Iâve been an angel. Just last week, you two left me and Tyche here, with strict orders to sort our shit out.â
âIf you didnât get grouchy when things are out of your control, you wouldnât be Sophia,â Maverick pointed out generously. âBesides, itâs not like you threw anything.â
âOr broke shit.â
âI still owe you both an apology,â I argued. âJust because Iâm out of my comfort zone, that doesnât mean itâs okay for me to snap and snarl at you two.â
Conor snapped his fingers several times. âDinner. At the Undine. You, your sister, Charly⊠Maybe donât get drunk this time, but a night out, yeah? People who would be there anyway, just like weâre usually the ones with you at night. Whatcha say?â
I shook my head slowly. âI donât think Xio is going to approve that. Both of us in one place, for starters. Plus somewhere that crowded? Security would be a nightmare.â
âWhat about camping? Charly keeps mentioning at work that sheâs dying to go camping.â
This time, it was Maverickâs turn to be confused. âWhere?â he gestured around us. âWeâre on a space ship. Where can we go camping?â
âBioLab2,â came the answer. âIt goes into night mode from mid Beta-shift to the start of Alpha. Thatâs fifteen hours of night time. Weâd have to get special permission, since folks arenât usually allowed in there at ânightâ, but given the circumstances, I think Grey could be convinced to try it out. See how the nocturnal species in the lab react to their schedule being interrupted.â
âYou seriously want me to go camping?â I asked skeptically.
âHey, I love to go camping!â He looked comically offended. Glancing at Maverick, he raised an eyebrow in challenge.
âNever been, but I can give it a shot,â was the mild reply. In the bottom of my field of vision, a hand snaked over and snagged the sort-of stuffed bun from my plate. I didnât even stop him, just waited for the inevitable. Sure enough, less than a minute later, he started sputtering. âOh, that is disgusting!â
Conor tsked at him, shaking his head. âLove, you saw me put her poor roast on the bap. You knew it had gravy on it.â
âBut you put the mushrooms on the bread, too!?â
âI did it for the lady, who likes mushroom gravy.â Heaving a sigh, he stood up, went back into the kitchen, and returned with a small carafe of something. Prying apart another roll, he gently tucked a slice of roast inside, before pouring the contents of the carafe - plain, brown gravy, as it turned out - both beneath and on top of the meat. âYou have to have something or itâs too dry,â he explained, handing it to Maverick, who surrendered mine back into my own custody.
I took a bite of mine, and gave a little hum of delight. It reminded me of being in school and stuffing mashed potatoes with gravy and thin sliced mystery meat into a yeast roll to make the meat edible, only much better. Gesturing to Maverickâs own sandwich emphatically, I waited.
Unlike his enthusiasm for stolen food, he stared his own bun down suspiciously before taking a very ginger bite. Chewing carefully for a moment, he furrowed his face in thought before finally making a similarly happy noise and taking a larger bite. Covering his mouth with one hand, he gave his verdict. âDis iss guh!â
Conor and I both rolled our eyes, landing on each otherâs face. âYouâd think the boy never had chipped beef on toast. Or a French dip sammy,â Conor scoffed as he made his own.
It took everything I had not to dissolve into laughter as I watched my beautiful roast dinner be turned into schoolyard sandwiches. But sometimes, thatâs what you need, I reminded myself as I took another bite. Kids have the right idea.

Be Soft
So @captainkirkk had a birthday the other day and I promised a fic in her honor. I chose Fire Lord Zuko and one of my favorite quotes to guide me. I am so happy to know you friend, thank you for your writing and for being my mutual. May your day and all others be warm and blessed.
Be Soft. Do not let the world make you hard. Do not let pain make you hate. Do not let bitterness steal your sweetness. Take pride that even though the rest of the world may disagree, you still believe it to be a beautiful place. ~ Iain Thomas
XxX
âPrince Zuko,â Father spoke in that slow, clipped tone he used when he was displeased. âWhy did you leave your firebending lesson early?â
âI saw something,â Zuko muttered, overcome with shame and embarrassment.
âAnd what did you see that was so important that you felt the need to disrespect the teacher I pay good money to tutor you?â Father continued with a sneer.
âA-Azula left early too, even earlier than I did,â he defended, pointing at his sister who gave an indifferent shrug. Everyone knew who the favorite was, who would come out on top.
âAzula is a prodigy and does not need the lessons you so desperately need to even call yourself a bender much less my son,â Zuko squeezed his eyes shut and bowed his head so his father couldnât see the tars stinging in the corners of his eyes at the cruel words. It would only make his dad angrier.
âSo tell me, Prince Zuko, what did you see?â Father asked again, this time almost managing to sound genuine but Zuko knew he was at the end of the manâs patience.
âI uh saw one of the recently hatched turtleducks being followed by the garden masterâs cathawk and I was worried that it would get eaten. So I um,â He saw his father frown in disapproval. âI uh chased off the cathawk and carried the turtleduck back to the pond. Itâs mother snapped at me but the baby was safe at least.â He all but murmured the last part. Beside him, Azula laughed quietly into her hand.
âSo you abandoned your lesson to chase away an animal from doing what nature intended it to do,â Father huffed and smoke billowed out of his nose. He stood up abruptly and grabbed Zuko by the front of his tunic before he could move. âThis is why you so inadequate as a prince. No one cares about tiny mewling creatures in a pond, all that matters is the power you hold and how you use it. You may have stopped that cathawk today but what about tomorrow? Either it will feed on your precious turtleducks or it will die. You need to learn to do the same or a similar fate may befall you.â He let go and walked past Zuko without another look and out of the room.
âI told ya Dad would be mad,â Azula gloated from next to him.
âShut up,â Zuko mumbled from the ground.
âBoth of you, stop that,â Mom said, bustling into the room with a pinched look on her face she stooped down to his level and it melted into concern. âAre you okay Zuko?â Azula rolled her eyes at the display and stalked out of the room with her head held high. But Zuko didnât notice, didnât care, with his motherâs arms now around him.
âYeah,â he said into the sleeve of her robes, trying to wipe his tears away as discreetly as possible but Mom probably noticed anyway. âAm I, am I a bad prince because I didnât want the baby turtleduck to get eaten?â
âOh Zuko,â she said into his hair, âno, baby. Youâre a good prince and you know why?â She pulled back and wiped her thumb across some wetness staining his cheeks. âItâs because you care about living things, even when itâs hard. Youâre hardworking and brilliant and you use it all for the sake of others. I would want to live in a nation knowing my Fire Lord did everything he could to protect me and my family. That is the mark of a true leader, using your power for the betterment of the world.â
âDo you think I could be that kind of a person?â Zuko asked meekly.
âOh my love,â she said with a kiss, âof course you will. Youâll be the kindest Fire Lord the world has ever known.â
XxX
âOh Agni which one of these do I answer first,â Zuko asked himself picking one of the literal dozens of scrolls littered on his desk. Heâd felt on top of the world a week ago when the Fire Sages had crowned him Fire Lord but now he wonders if heâll really be able to fix his broken nation, this broken world. The scrolls contained everything from demands of reparations from the Earth Kingdom and Water Tribes, generals at the front demanding orders, Fire Nation dignitaries disagreeing with his ideas for a new, brighter Fire Nation. Basically everyone wanted a piece of him and he just didnât know if he was enough.
He stalked over to the wall on the other side of room and stared at a painting Sokka had given him before theyâd left. It depicted Zuko with his swords doing some sort of firebending, or at least that was how Sokka described it. It pretty hard to tell but it had been made for him by his friend, a fact that still takes him off guard. Who would have thought heâd ever be nostalgic for the War? Simpler times now that he thinks on it, stop the Fire Lord and save the world but now heâs Fire Lord and he doesnât know how to fix things. He doesnât know if anyone could. He was tired from too many late nights, worn down by the physical and emotional stress of the last few weeks and aching from the inside out at the thought of being exactly what his father said he was: nothing.
He growled, pulling away from the wall and going back to his desk where the scrolls are still lying, just as accusing and disbelieving and unanswered as they were a moment ago. Thereâs a quiet little knock at the door and a hesitant little âMy Lord?â
âWhat!â Zuko snapped, spilling some scrolls from the desk in his anger. As quickly as his frustrating bubbled it fizzled out and he chased after the frightened servant who had staggered back out into the hallway. âIâm sorry, Iâm so sorry, you startled me and Iâm just so frustrated and I didnât mean to scare you, really.â He was about ready to get down on his knees when the servant, an older woman he remembers seeing on the periphery of his childhood, kind of stopped and stared at him as if she didnât know what to make of him.
âAre you alright, my Lord?â She said finally as he kind of awkwardly staggered to his feet deciding he probably looked ridiculous going for a bow with this woman. He swayed a little bit, pushing some of the hair out of his face.
âYes, obviously, do I not look alright?â He asked and she pointedly took an extra telling few moments before nodding her head. âYeah, I thought so.â He sighed leaning against the wall. âIâm sorry again for earlier, that was inappropriate of me. Can I make you some tea to make up for it?â
âI,â she said before shaking her head as if to clear it. âNo I was coming to ask if you wanted tea.â
âI do but Iâd like to make it, need to do something with my hands. Here, come inside, we can talk for a moment,â he said, leading the woman into the room and setting her on the plush royal stool. âWhatâs your name? Is green tea alright? Itâs all I have in here.â He babbled as concentrated on measuring the tea out just so while he lit a flame for the ever present pot of water.
âI am Maki,â she said softly, âand yes, my Lord. Is this what plagues you?â She asked gesturing to the scrolls sill covered his desk and now the floor. He grunted, playing with the waterâs flame.
âI donât know how to answer them in a way that will make them listen to me, I need them to respect me, to take a chance with me on peace but I donât know how,â he sighed watching the leaves steep in the water.
âIf I may my Lord,â she began hesitantly. âI would be honest; you have done more than most to end the war. They cannot doubt your motives, explain yourself as you have to me and I believe they will listen. Mistakes are made freely but so few are willing to extend the hand out in repentance and understanding.â
âHuh,â He said mulling over the words before pouring the tea for the two of them. âThat just might work.â
XxX
Zuko had faced many monsters in his life both in spiritual and human form but it never got any easier. The trails punishing the war crimes of those from all four nations during the war went on years after Ozai was taken down. As Fire Lord, he was responsible for those charged within the Fire Nation and it anguished him to see how many of his people were guilty of crimes against humanity.
He knelt down in front of a row of liberated prisoners from a camp, mostly deserters or war criminals or rebels who couldnât keep their mouths shut. They were clearly underfed, overworked, their bodies strained and exhausted beyond measure. Their suffering was imbedded in every lines along their skin and their fear lighting in their eyes like candle flames. It made him want to turn away in disgust and anger but instead he held out a hand.
âYour cases will be reviewed, some of you may still face prison time but it wonât be like this,â he said, emphatically, trying to put as much honesty into his words as he could. If his voice broke a little at the end and his hand shook a bit then all the better to convince them. âThe rest of you will be allowed to return to your lives and your families, all we ask in return is that you give our peace a chance. Are these terms acceptable?â
âYou would really let a go?â A young woman, probably around Azulaâs age asked with a sneer. His fatherâs years on the throne showed very little sympathy towards disagreement, no one was free from punishment. No wonder she didnât believe him.
âGuard, release their manacles. While the records are reviewed they donât need to be chained, once theyâre off, get rid of them. Theyâll never be put on anyone ever again,â Zuko ordered.
âB-but my Lord!â One guard stuttered, âthe prisoners will riot, they need to be contained.â
âUnless they want to risk their chance of going home, I believe they deserve the chance to feel like humans again,â Zuko side-eyed the guard. âUnless things were happening in this camp that you fear retaliation for.â Several guards looked away and Zuko knew heâd be investigating their records, as well as speaking to the prisoners themselves, as well.
âSir, I must protest. Itâs not safe for you and, to be honest, it is beneath a man of your status to kneel before peasants and miscreants. Every one of them is here because of crimes they knowingly committed against the state. Everything that happened here, to them, was justified.â The head guard said with a face that looked as if he had never smiled before. A few of the prisoners bowed their heads or shrunk away from the manâs very presence. Heâs sure heâll find that every heinous act in this camp was committed or authorized by this man. Itâs times like these he most understands his father, how easy and good it would feel to lash out this man with both his fire and his privilege. But he stays his hand, if only for the people behind him. He needs to show them that he means what he says, that he believes in pretty words like peace and justice. They were worth something, a long time ago, he hope to bring those words to life again.
âJustified,â he hisses, âor not, I want them set free. And we will decide what or what not is beneath me when Iâm reviewing the records of everyone at this facility.â He stood tall, putting as much confidence as could into his posture. He would save these people and he would do it the right way. âLetâs begin, shall we?â
XxX
Forty Eight was still too young, he decides wearily. Heâd been Fire Lord for three decades, fought and lost many battles, won a few in-between, and put his heart and soul into restoring the Fire Nation. And yet here he knelt, feeling as fragile and helpless as a child. Forty Eight was far too young to lose a father.
âUncle,â he croaked, âcan I get you some more tea?â
âNot now,â Uncle said with great effort. âYour tea making has much improved nephew but I fear my stomach cannot handle it.â Zuko looked down at his worn hands and wrestled with them anxiously. There were people outside waiting for him, his wife and daughter, his friends, his nation, all grieving the impending loss of one of its finest heroes. But in this moment, nothing existed but him and his uncle.
âWhat troubles you, my Lord?â Uncle whispered, almost a sigh.
âYou know,â Zuko said back just as quietly.
âDeath is another part of life,â that weathered, weary hand reached for his own and Zuko held on as tightly as he could allow. âI have lived a spectacular life, made mistakes, redeemed myself, raised a boy into a man,â Zuko suppressed a sob, âhelped save the world, ran a shop. I have done what I was meant to do and now it is time for me to depart. My body is failing and my spirit longs for peace.â
âI know,â Zuko admitted, thinking of the slow progression the years had worn on the man who had always seemed larger than life. âAnd I thank you for staying with me for as long as you could, for being my family when I had none. I,â he bowed his head and brought Uncle hand up to his forehead. âAs your Lord, I give you permission to have your rest. You have served your nation honorably General Iroh, you go with honor and-and with love.â He said with as much composition as he could muster, shoving the pain he felt letting his uncle go in favor of relieving the pain his uncle felt at being forced to stay for his sake.
âZuko, my Zuko,â Uncle said warmly removing his hand from Zukoâs forehead to rest it along his cheek. He hand was cold and thin but Zuko cupped it anyway. âI know this is difficult but your words me so much to me. The blessing is nice, but the true blessing is watching you bloom like a cherry blossom, beautiful and kind, is the greatest gift of all.â
âI tried Uncle,â Zuko said, some of his grief abating in the face of Uncleâs proverbs. âIâve done my best to be a be a good leader, to not be like my father. Itâs been hard Uncle, itâs been so hard,â he nuzzled his Uncleâs hand. âSometimes I get so frustrated and angry and it hurts but I tried to be what this nation needed.â
âMy Prince, my Lord, my dear Nephew,â Uncle said, âyou are. It is precisely because it has been so hard that makes your accomplishments shine even more brightly. Watching you grow, seeing your light, it has been the pleasure of my life, Zuko.â Zuko smiled into his uncle palm, still feeling small and afraid and so terribly sad. But his Uncle is ready and Zuko thinks heâs finally ready too.
âGo in peace,â He said, gently resting Uncleâs hand on his harshly rattling chest, âgo with my love.â
âI must share it with every living creature,â Uncle said, âand I am all the more glad for it.â Uncle closed his eyes and Zuko knew that everything they had to say had passed. This time is for his Uncle and him alone. He leaned down and kissed his brow one last time before sweeping out of the room. He wanted to stay but the man had wanted his privacy and Zuko could not deny him. Still, he thought, standing outside with the others, leaning heavily on Aangâs shoulder as the inevitable comes and passes. Â It was hard to be gentle, to let the softest part of him out for everyone to see. But he was raised with both cruelty and kindness and he knew which he wanted for his country, for his family. For his Uncleâs memory and for all the people he hoped to save, he could only go forward and hope it was enough.
#happy birthday captainkirkk#I wanted to write you some Soft!Zuko and it didn't quite end up getting there#i love your versions but with this quote in mind I was pulled elsewhere#I focused more on the *difficulties* of being kind#Zuko was always passionate and sometimes volatile who was raised under cruelty#It can be hard sometimes to hold out a hand when you want to strike someone#to whisper when you want to scream#its one reason I love him because he MAKES that effort#even when it pulls out him he grits his teeth and says 'NO I will not be like those before I will be stronger and I will show mercy'#also wanted to show a depiction of a Good Death which we rarely in media#we talk about in my Hospice classes where Death is about resolution and peace#anyway I hope you had a good bday#sorry its a few days late#thank you for being my friend :)

The Captain Next Door Ch.1
Summary: Youâre a doctor who also just so happens to be a fan fiction writer. You love lots of fandoms but Captain America is by far your fave, so what happens when you get a new job, move to Brooklyn and realize that the brownstone you bought is right next door to Captain America? Obviously shenanigans ensue.
Warnings: cursing, smutt (eventually)
Authors note: Ok guys, this is literally my first fanfic and itâs about the Cap. Please be gentle! Also guys I really do live for a slow burn so that will be present heavy, I hope you can stick with it. Let me know what you think and please, reblog, like and comment! Love y'all! P.S. I do not currently have a beta and the âfâ and âuâ keys on my keyboard are messed up so incase you see repeating letters anywhere they arenât supposed to be feel free to let me know.
You wiped the sweat forming on your head from the sweltering Brooklyn heat. You were from Texas but this was definitely more than you were used to, or expected from everything youâve seen on TV about New York. You sat on the stoop of your Brooklyn Brownstone waiting and started to think back. Three months ago you were in your parents living room opening up a heavy envelope from a hospital youâve only dreamed of. Your father beamed from ear to ear, chest swelling with pride and tears were already in your momâs eyes the moment a paper cutter went through the envelope. Your eyes flew across the page âY/FN Y/LN, We would like to offer you the position of Head of Cardiology here at Mount Sinai...â everything else had been a blur. All your sleepless nights in college, all the anxiety, stress, sacrifices of missed birthdays and family gatherings, all of it had lead up to this moment and it had all been worth it. Your job started in the next 5 months and you had to pack up your Texan life and move all the way to the âbig Appleâ as your dad called it. Besides the fact that you were infatuated with the city since you were a little girl, you were ready for a change of scenery. There were so many good memories here in Fort Worth but thanks to your asshole ex, Daniel, there were also a lot of sour ones as well. Your parents and your younger siblings helped you pack up your little house that was just  15 minutes from theirs. You were able to get everything done in about 2 weeks. At the airport your family saw you off. Your younger brother, Benjamin, eyes were red.
âAww baby brother are you crying because youâre going to miss me?â you pinched at his cheeks.
Swatting your hand away he chuckled âNah, Iâm just thinking about how youâre gonna be in a whole nother state bossing people around and how youâll finally be able to mind your own business and stay out of mine.â You hugged him and he bent down so you could kiss his forehead. Even though you were 26, a whole 7 years older than him and 5â8, he still towered above you.
Turing to your 3 youngest sisters, Joy, Faith and Hope. Their names a testament to just how southern and Christian your parents were. They were huddled together crying freely, looking like little black angels in a chapel. You hugged each of them while the youngest, Hope, held on the longest. You hugged her until she was ready to let go. You kissed Faith on the cheek and moved to turn to your parents. The third oldest Joy grabbed you and hugged you once again, fiercley. She whispered in your ear âY/N, I don't know how to do it. I don't know how to take care of them the way you took care of us, what are we gonna do without you?â
You looked into her brown eyes âJoy, babe all you have to do is love them. Also Iâm just a FaceTime call away, PLUS Iâm a big shot doctor so it ainât nothing for me to hop on a plane for yâall. Girl I got monnneeyyyyâ That managed to get a little laugh from her and you stepped back to look at your siblings. Technically yes, they were your younger ones but due to the large age gap you always looked at them as your children, your babies. The 4 of them huddled around you once more and hugged. You turned to your dad who was never one to shy away from his emotions, was all but balling.
âCome on dad, you gotta hold it together man!â he laughed and wiped at his cheeks
âIâm just so proud of you baby girl, you inspire your brother and sisters to do more, your mother and I have always told you that, but I never told you, you inspire me to. I am beyond proud of you.â
âAw dad, I love you so muchâ Pulling you into one of his patented hugs he said âI love you too. Youâre going to the big apple now Doc, make sure you take a biteâ Kissing your forehead you turned to face your mom. Oh boy. Of you made it through this one you would be home free, no ugly snot face crying. She gave you the best smile she could and that was it. The dam broke and you were sobbing. She hugged you and told you how proud of you she was, how you were a shining light for your siblings and the family as a whole. She told you that she also packed some food from home in your suitcase so you could settle in a little easier. You looked at her with a heart full of nothing but love. You were a little neurotic, and had a tendency to be anal retentive, planning and sticking to strict schedule for everything, predicting 10â000 possible outcomes to any situation but your mother was always there for you. Always remembering anything you didnât. You thought of how she was really the only one you would let see vulnerable and take care of you. You would miss that in New York. Picking up your hand luggage you were whisked through security thanks to your first class ticket. Turning once more now passed security you stood up on your tip toes and waved emphatically to your family, not caring who saw you or them looking crazy. Your family had already been a little above average but this new job allowed you to even buy your wants not just your needs. You settled down in your chair and noticed only a handful of people were in your cabin. A stewardess came to offer you some champagne and you politely declined. Looking out the window a few seconds letting the last tear fall you put your curly hair up, you had to get to work.
So yes, you were a doctor and that was all good and fun but you were also a huge nerd. Huge. While most people went to the club, concerts and generally having pretty good times outdoors you were stuck at home. Even when not studying you were still stuck to your computer. Once your family insisted on going to six flags and you brought your ipad with the attachable keyboard and your family kept talking about how dedicated of a student turned intern turned full-fledged doctor you were. If only they knew⊠You were working on your fanfiction and your followers and subbies were a bunch of savages! If they didnât get their fix from you and you didn't stick to your upload schedule, your inbox would definitely be a madness, all sorts of threats and your lovelies would call you everything but a child of God. Youâd been away for about a month and a few days now and your beta, Jay had started texting your actual phone. You met Jay on Tumblr a few years before, there had been some light flirtation always present but never anything serious. You worked better as friends and when you decided to get into fanfiction to blow steam off, he proved a good beta reader.
TXT From Jay: Doc! Where the hell are you at? Your rabid readers are jumping down my throat trying to you. Why you would leave a major cliffhanger for Captain America, and Sonia I have no idea. They want to know whatâs happening next, low key I do too.
You giggled. You thought of everything, you knew setting up a completely unaffiliated and untraceable account for your writing was a good idea. 1- you didn't want angry people in your inbox losing their minds. 2- Youâve been going for interviews and you didn't want a case where a potential employer would google your name and see all the filth you think about earthâs mightiest heroes and other people who donât even exist. No way, you couldn't have that type of rep attached to you.
TXT From Y/N: Jaybaby, Iâve been going through it. Sorry, just been in the process of moving and you know life can get a little messy. Plus I really needed a break. Funnily enough Iâm working on The Dangerous Dame right now. Iâll send the new chapter to you within the week. XO
Thinking back to seeing the avengers save New York you were grateful for them. They were kicking ass and taking names. Keeping all of us safe but damn if they werenât all so fine. And you did mean ALL. To be honest that Natasha could. Get. It. All of them could get it. But there was something about that Captain America. He was sort of shy and had a boyish charm about him but that body made you think of pure sin. You wanted to wrap yourself around him and never let him go. You wanted to do nasty things to him. You wanted him to completely demolish you. So you did what everyone who is obsessed with anyone does. Try and consume as much media about said person as possible. Hey, It is the golden age of technology after all. After having your fill of random fan pictures, blurry videos of him in action you needed more stimulus. Where better to turn than Tumblr. Much to your dismay, there was barely any Cap Fanfic and when there was there was so little reader insert. And even then, there was literally less than 10 where he was actually into a black woman. This wouldn't do, you thought to yourself. Thatâs how Doctor Chris was born. Of course his name was Steve but he always sort of looked like a Chris to you. You didnât just write about him but other people too, your stories took off and were a good escape from your hectic life.
A car pulled up to you on your empty street and a short round man with a very stereotypical New Yorker accent shouted up to you, shaking you our of your memories
âAy lady, are youâ his beady eyes peered at a piece of paper âY/N? Are you Y/N?â
      âYes thatâs meâ
âAlright come get your unit, and not to be rude or anything but could you make it snappy? I got to make 15 more deliveries before the day is over.â
You slowly rose âAlright, I understand. However I paid for the delivery service? Arenât yâall supposed to put it in my house?â
âLady you paid for the delivery service, not the installation service. That's another fee.â
âI understand thatâ You replied still confused â But I thought you would deliver it into my home.â
âNo way lady, thatâs the set up service. You paid for the delivery service. That's an entirely different fee.â He repeated.
âUnderstoodâ Your lips pulled into a flat line âWell sir could you at least help me get it into the first floor of my house?â
âDid you pay for transportation insurance?â
ââŠ.noâŠI didn-â  he cut you off âWell sorry Lady, I canât help you.â
âYou canât help me off load this huge AC and just carry it up 7 measly steps with me?â
âNope, canât do it. Itâs against company policy. Say I should look up at a pretty bird cuz the dayâs so gorgeous and what not, then your unit slips out of my hand, there goes your cool breeze. Whoâs gonna pay for that? Certainly not the company, cuz you didnât pay for the transport insurance. That's a different fee. Now youâre angry at me, I mean technically it was my fault for being so clumsy and distractable and what not. But guess who else isnât gonna pay? Me! Then guess whos gonna be upset and take me to court but loose horrifically because my brother in law just passed the bar? You! So lady no, I canât help you. Why donât you get one of the other tenants in the building to help you?â
âWell, not that itâs any of your business, but I own the brownstone and I live alone. So thereâs no one that could help me.â
âYou had enough money to get a brownstone but not enough to pay the fee?â
âAlright thanks whatever your name is. Iâll just take my AC Now.â
You looked at him while you struggled for 15 minutes just to get the AC out of the truck and the second you safely had it on the baking concrete of the curb you heard the back of the truck slide down and heard a door slam. You turned around to see the truck driver starting up the car and he shouted over the roaring engine.
âThanks for shopping with Coole Breeze, your number one cooling solution  in the tricity area, have a frosty day!â and with that, he was off.
Even though you were wearing a  pretty airy romper and you did work out about 3 times a week, that was nothing against that heavy ass air conditioner and that Brooklyn heat. You put your hands on top your head and squinted up the sky. You again thank God your street was empty. You must have sweated out your Twist out and edges by now. You were convinced you were looking crazy. But hey, It was a Tuesday at 1. Everyone who was someone was at work, kids were in school so it was just you and this behemoth air conditioning unit.  Getting into classic Y/N calculations your decided what you were going to do. Yes, this AC was, technically for your room but you wonât be able to get it all the way up there by yourself right now so you can create a pulley system and pull it through the window. Huffing and puffing to your started mimicking your father.
âBuy a fixer upper baby girl, it's a great investment. You could build your dream home and sell it eventually , itâll be fun! Your brother and I will fly up there to help you whenever you need us or have free time. Matter of fact Iâm pretty sure my army buddy Wilson still lives in New YorkâŠNot sure the part though. But I know he and his boy are engineers of some sort. I can even ring them up to help you when I canât make it myself. This will be a terrific family project honey!â
â Sure dad!â you shouted at no one in particular â whoâs going to help me now though?!â At least your mother had the foresight to buy you a fully equipped toolbox, 12 foot ladder and a whole bunch of things that a new homeowner/renovator needs. It took a bit of maneuvering but you were able to get the ladder out the door and down the steps. You were now atop of it, building and hammering away at a pulley system. You were determined to sleep in a chilly 50 degrees tonight, by any means necessary. You saw two men one white and one black, approaching from your left through your peripheral vision. You steeled yourself to any cat calling that may occur, from the angle - to what you had on, it wasnât a good situation. You couldn't make out faces but you could see that one was visibly bigger than the other. They stopped walking a little behind you and you couldn't tell which one asked but you heard someone say
âHi, do you need any help?â
âO fanksâ You replied with a slight lift of your hand with a screwdriver hanging out the side of your mouth and a heavy covering of sweat on your forehead. Using the back of your hand to wipe the sweat off you removed the screwdriver from your mouth and cleared your throat then repeated âNo thanksâ In a clearer manner. Thinking to yourself how could these guys even help me? While screwing and grunting softly you werenât mentally present. You were trying to solve the problem you created. You had written yourself into a corner and you were trying to figure out a way out of it. You started to get the thread of an idea that you were mentally trying to work into a tapestry for your readers, however, while still trying to flesh it out something else was fighting for your attention. In the back of your mind you heard his voice again.
âAre you sure? We may be able to be of better help than you thin-â Remembering your mothers call the night before talking about a movie she watched on lifetime where people in the âbig cityâ would help you get something into your house as supposed good Samaritans then come back and rob you, or do worse you decided against it instantly.
âListen, thanks but no.â You huffed out âApparently I paid for the delivery service and not the installation service as the lovely delivery man told me. This however does NOT include carrying my AC up the 4 flights of stairs to my bedroom because that's apparently another fee. So no, there isnât anything you gentlemen could do for meâ You heard a little chuckle behind you and heard a quieter deeper voice say:
âYou have to pay the fees, thatâs where they get youâ his voice was full of laughter. He wasnât outright laughing but you could still somehow hear it in his voice.
Momentarily forgetting you were on a ladder you whipped around to give the guy a piece of your mind. But all it takes is a moment. And in that moment, you were falling backward off a 12 foot ladder. Back, back, back, you go thinking this is how it would end. You dead on the concrete. You hadnât been to china town yet! Why hadnât you been to china town? Or the empire state building! OR the statue of liberty! You shouldn't have rushed your mom off the phone last night. You would have given anything to hear her aimless ramblings and numerous âbe carefulsâ one last time. OH GOD! You hadnât had sex in a year and a half! This is how you were going to die. Trying to tell off some harassers with an uncompleted house in your name before you started your dream job. You squeezed your eyes shut and braced for impact
Your body hit something that was hard like cement but was warmer andâŠ. Somehow smelled like leather? And Christmas? And Home somehow? You opened your eyes to see a face partially obscured by a blue baseball hat pulled down over the front and a full beard. You couldn't see who he was and he was leaning in close to your face while he held you. There was something so familiar about him, but you couldn't place it. His voice kept fading in and out of your head.
      âMaâam? Maâam! Stay with me!â
Sounding like echos of screams and whispers bouncing off the inside of your skull all at once you blinked slow and mustered out what you could:
âDon'tâŠTell me what to doâŠAssholeâ and everything faded to black.

âCome one Alex stay with me, breathe!â - Michael. For malex
Michael is in the bathroom when he gets a sharp jab in his skull.
Itâs like someone is poking at him and he recoils from the sink, almost crashing into some other guy. He mumbles an apology when it happens again. It forces him to listen or to feel, heâs pretty sure this isnât auditory. Discomfort hits him, followed by disgust and it shapes itself into an thought it takes him a moment to fully comprehend.
Get out here.
Michael gets out. Maria is the focal point of several guys who are well into that nasty drunk phase. One of them has her hand on his, it looks seductive but Michael knows sheâs got it there for a reason. Mariaâs a great fucking actress, nothing about her screams help. The most he gets is surprise that she quickly turns to a grin thatâs completely apologetic.
âSorry guys,â she says, âhoney what are you doing here? Iâm working?â
âTrying to decide which of these guys sucks more ass at pool,â he says, âI think itâs a three way tie.â
They rush him at the same time.
After Maria puts ice to the right side of his face as he wishes that Max was there. She is quiet and he wonders if he fucked up. But she lowers the ice and takes his hands in both of hers.
âYouâve never come that fast before,â she says, âdid you hear me?â
Michaelâs mouth is dry. Immediately his mind flashes from the bathroom to the prison. The pain to the overwhelming love he felt. It was easier to understand, like his mother knew how to work the connection. How to control everything. He remembers the gentleness of her voice rather than the way Maria felt like she was desperately trying to get his attention. Like she didnât think he could hear.
âHow many times did you call?â He asks.
âTwice.â
He feels lightheaded. It must show on his face because something painfully hopeful shows on Mariaâs. He can hear her. He can hear her and she isnât alone until she has kids. Oh thank you, thankyoutthankyouâMichael shoves himself back and Maria letâs go of his hands instantly. Her sunshine warm fog becomes ephemeral and dissipates, leaving him alone. He almost snatches it back but he canât move until itâs gone. And then everything is just cold and jumbled.
âI donâtââ he shakes his head, âI donât understand.â
âYouâre an empath,â She says, âwe may have been along the same wavelength so you didnât realize,â he looks at her blankly, âmy mom used to do that to me until I got strong enough.â
âIâm not an empath, Iâm telekinetic,â he protests, âhow can I just developââ he stops, his stomach dropping, âI gotta go.â
Maria lets him, nothing but sympathy on her face. He stops at the door and turns around.
âIâll help. When youâre ready,â she says, âyou shouldnât go through this alone.â
âThank you.â
He doesnât call Alex on his way over. 1 am is late but Alex is a night owl. Heâs definitely awake. Michael thinks back to Max after he killed Noah. Heâd been almost in a mania but Michael hadnât thought much of it. And then he had been dead, which took precedence. Absorbing other peopleâs powers, that wasnât something they had thought about. But why would it be? Until very recently they hadnât known there were other peopleâs powers to absorb. He tugs his curls and fights the uncomfortable feeling of someone elseâs powers in him. He knows all the cheesy shit about parents passing things on and he knows the genetic part of it. But this is like a tangible part of his mother is rooted him and he canât wrap his head around it. Before he goes crazy, he has to be sure. And thereâs only one place he knows to get answers from.
The lights are on in Alexâs cabin and Michael barely stops the car before he walks to the door. He knocks hard. He can only hope that Alex will let him in, that heâll get it. This is bigger than their romantic stuff, right? The door opens and he has to rethink that. Alex is standing there in a pair of grey pj bottoms and a white t-shirt, a pair of glasses on his nose. His hair is sticking out in all directions. A wave of longing crashes over Michael. He looks good and something is wrong. Alex silently takes a deep breath and calm settles over him, though historically Alex taking a deep breath happens before shit hits the fan. Itâs never calming to be on the other end. Which can only meanâ
âOh fuck,â Michael realizes. Maria was right. She was cancelling him out, âshit.â
A wave of affection and hurt crashes over him but he smiles around the anche.
âHi to you too,â Alex says, âyou want to come in?â
âNo!â The word is loud and emphatic. Concern joins the other emotions, âcan you notââ he wishes Alex moved towards him so he could have some excuse. But Alex knows him too well, âI need the stuff you have on my mom,â he says. Guilt crescendos. God, Alex, no. âI can wait here.â
âCome inside,â Alex says.
Michael gingerly steps in, trying to pull his emotions back from Alexâs. It feels invasive, like heâs spying on something he has no right to see. Which is exactly what heâs doing, even accidentally. Itâs difficult to find the mental wall he uses on his siblings. They are respectful and he doesnât have to try terribly hard. Alexâs emotions are more like waves that lap at him. He has to adjust with so many factors. Alex opens a locked box inside a locked cabinet and more guilt slips knife sharp along his defenses.
âIâve been tryingââ
âItâs okay,â he says, fighting the way he crashes back into that aching pit, âAlex itâs fine,â he reiterates, ignoring the confusion that rolls in. Â Alex boots up the drive and steps back. There is a prickle of trepidation at the ladder, âyou donât have to go,â he says, not taking his eyes from the screen. He gets to it finally and looks at the mugshot. He cannot go to pieces. He looks first for the powers. They are charted with terrible precision, âshit.â
âWhat?â Alex asked and the guilt hits him.
âMy mom passed her power onto me,â he says, looking away from more information than he can digest, âsheâe in me,â he stresses. Alex is unsure and guilty, âiâm like Maria on steroids,â he says. Before he can untangle Alex he continued, âyou shouldnât feel guilty about Cauffield. I donât blame you for that,â and just to be sure, âyour ass looks great in those pants.â
âYouâre not funny,â Alex tells him, âyou can feel everything?â
âIâm hysterical and i donât know,â he glances at the screen.
âMay I?â Alex asks.
Michael nods gratefully as Alex peers at the screen, digesting the information. He looks at Michael and then back at the screen.
âEmpathic abilities, memory probing, mind sharingââ
âMax does that when he heals someone. Leaves a glowing handprint.â
âThis doesnât say anything about a handprint,â he says.
âWhat about the connection lasting?â Michael asks, âor if she could control it?â He turns.
âDonât!â Alex blocks the chair with his hand. But Michael turns anyway, catching a glimpse of wires and wires and a shaved headâ âlook at me,â Alex orders, âfocus on me.â
He latches onto Alexâs calmness and sureness. Everything is going to be okay. Michael is going to be okay. He is going to be fine and all he has to do is look into Alexâs pretty eyes and old man glasses. A surprises bark of laughter rips from. Old man glasses, he hears emphatically. Affection mirrors his own somewhere deep under everything else. For the first time in his life, Michael sees the red glow start between his fingers. All the emotion retreats like a curtain pulling back. Itâs the overture to something bigger. Alex looks at his hand as well.
âWhatâs it going to do?â Alex asks.
âMy hand you mean?â Michael asks. Alex looks but his emotions are a mystery, âI donât know.â
âI guess we should find out.â
Michael wants to shake his head but itâs Alex. Alex may not know him better than a handful of people but they have a connection. Something even he canât deny. He misses out on all the ET jokes he could make as he lifts his hand up. Alex does his deep breath thing, which Michael knows is the start of something big as he lifts his hand up and then determination crosses his features and he presses his hand to Michaelâs. A zap seems to go all the way up Michaelâs arm and then back towards his hand.
Then the explosion happens.
Itâs not literal though, God, it might as well be. Everything levels in a single moment like trees being cleared and in the clearing, chaos erupts. Itâs a tangle of two lives. Of dark secrets and bright bursts of hope. His leg gets blown off and Alexâs hand gets shattered in the same instant. He grows up terrified and Alex grows up alone. Then they switch back. Over and over again, all in a single instant. Itâs molten and Itâs going to destroy them both. Though Alex will always fight to the bitter end and matches the maelstrom. Suddenly theyâre eleven and seven and sixteen. Michael grabs the seventeen year old memory but heâs to the left instantly. Later that night with Alex collapsed on his bed weeping himself into sickness and exhaustion. Alex is with him in the car, collapsed over the steering wheel with acetone on his lips. Michael tears himself back into the present. Alex is on his knees, fingers slotted through Michaelâs and the other hand gripping his forearm. His mouth is in his elbow to muffle the sound but Michael can see heâs screaming.
âAlex, Alex!â He tries to get his attention, âCome on Alex, Alex stay with me!â Michael focuses on the connection, back to the bedroom and seventeen. He shoves Alex through. Through the desert, through the medvac to the blue mats in the VA facility that become his most ardent lovers, âcome on Alex!â He grabs him through his doctor, hauling him to his feet, âAlex stay with me!â He forces his their hands together in this world and pulls along the connection, âstay with me!â
They rip back to the bunker violently and Michaelâs power sends him backwards as Alex collapses into himself against the floor. Michael scrambles off the chair and crawls to him. Alex is curled around himself and trembling violently. Michael wraps his arms around him and pulls him back against his chest, so Alexâs back is against his front. Alex is barely breathing except for shallow pants of air and his eyes are wild. Worst of all, Michael can feel nothing except static. Like Alex isnât
âBreathe,â he says, pressing his hand to Alexâs sternum, âcome on Alex. Stay with me, breathe!â
Michael forces himself to stay calm but when he feels Alexâs emotions finally hum back, he lets himself sag against him in pure relief. Â Alex exhales and sucks in a lungful of air. Michael presses his forehead to his shoulder, remembering why he always fought so hard to never use his power around Alex. He forces his breathing to be steady and exaggerated so Alex will copy him and he does. Propped up on Michaelâs chest, he breathes with him. Â Michael doesnât know how long they stay that way, breathing but the hum eventually starts to become other emotions. Michael is better able to push them aside this time and just focus on the tangible person in his arms. Alex shifts eventually so theyâre facing each other. Careful not to touch him, Michael reaches out and straightens Alexâs glasses.
âIâm so sorry,â he says.
âItâs okay,â Alex gets out, his voice hoarse, âIâm okay. Weâre okay.â
âWhat about the bunker?â Michael says, âis the bunker okay?â
Alexâs wave of âI am so done with youâ and âplease keep doing that foreverâ breaks over him and Michael leans into it, pressing his forehead to Alexâs.
âMax got Noahâs powers because he killed him,â Michael says.
âYour mother wanted you to have them,â Alex says. Despite whatâs just happened, he reaches out and cups both of Michaelâs cheeks, his thumbs skimming along his cheekbones, âthey were a gift, Michael.â
âHow can you say that after what just happened?â He asks.
Alex chuckles, the sound soft and sweet and comforting. And Michael realizes Alex doesnât think whatâs just happened is a bad thing. Scary, to be sure. But he only scares Alex in how he makes him feel. Not in what he is or what he can do. Michael ducks his head and presses his lips to Alexâs as Alexâs fingers slide back to his curls. The kiss is dry and chaste and warm until Alex licks the seam of his mouth and he parts for him. Itâs safe here.Â
Alex loves him and Michael doesnât need his powers to know that.
He never has.

Pasadena Iced Coffee (5/?)
(Sequel to Five Soda Maximum. Catch up on previous chapters on Ao3.)
"So where are you right now, on the feels and function scales?"
Caleb presses his lips together, looking up at the chalk board list of beverage options. "Function, nine," he says after a moment. "Or maybe eight. Um, on feels... pretty high? Seven? Eight?"
Molly nods and tightens the line a little as a woman with a stroller comes in to the shop behind them. "Okay. What's the biggest feel?"
"Surprise." Caleb looks over and smiles as Molly rests his chin on Caleb's shoulder. "I am serious, I was not expecting to hear back on that email for a month or so..."
That seems like forever, even for an older person. "Is he rude or just busy?"
"Very busy." Caleb's voice is emphatic. "He is doing... he is doing many things at once, always. Oh! I told you about him before. He is the one with the goblin assistant."
Molly remembers instantly - Caleb was afraid of some shadowy, all-powerful figure on campus until he heard a story about his goblin employee being discriminated against by campus staff. Said shadowy figure apparently wrote a multi-page article about academic racism that was, as Caleb explained it, the most scathing subtweet possible. Someone had to resign over it. "He's the Woke Shadow!"
"Ja!" Caleb laughs. "I forgot we named him that."
"So what can he do for you?"
"He can help me get into courses that are hard to get into, or entire programs, sign off on independent study... or get me internships or connections to places... he is very respected."
Molly considers this. "Do you need internships if you already make tons of money on your own merit?â
"Not unpaid internships. Like, a real paid job at a tech company, where afterward, they hire you on." Caleb rubs his nose and points up to the board. "We are next."
"Fuck, I haven't been reading the thing." Molly straightens up and moves next to Caleb. "Order for me?"
Caleb blushes a little, which makes Molly's tail curl. "Yes, okay."
**
They sit outside, with their backs to the large plate glass window so they can look out on the road. Several cars have their hoods down, which makes the people watching much easier. Molly sips his iced coffee and leans his shoulder against Caleb, who leans back.
"I forgot how nice it is to just. Be near." Caleb smiles at his lap.
Molly tilts his head just so, until the side of his right horn ruffles Caleb's hair. "I'm gonna do it," he teases.
"Nein," Caleb says with a pout, leaning away from the cowlick in progress.
"It's tiefling culture. You have to let me do it."
"I no longer believe in cultural relativism."
"Your school needs more humanities classes."
Caleb barks out a laugh. "It does, actually." He looks around a few moments, ensuring the coast is clear. "Some of my classmates could really use them. I love computers, the internet, but if you only live in there... you do not understand the real world."
"Met some other freshman who don't remember what trees look like?"
"Not just freshman," Caleb says, eyebrows lifting. "People about to graduate. They are, they are brilliant with big data platforms, or search queries, but they do not know how to talk to regular people! They think their field is the only thing that matters. If you cannot do this or that, then you are useless."
Molly scrunches his nose. "Even when you were shy, you didn't think like that."
Caleb puts his cup down on the metal table to gesticulate. "They barely even agree that other hard sciences - Caduceus! My RA, he is a great example. He is probably going to end up in, the, what is the word? In hospital, you go straight in because you are dying-"
"Emergency room?" Molly supplies. Caleb snaps.
"Yes. I always forget, it is so literal. Yes. The hospital emergency room people, they are begging him to do more... student hour things... there. He is not just smart, he is very calm, he does not panic when things are very bad, and these things together let him do very important things! Last month, a car crash on the..." Caleb points west. "I forget the road, it does not matter. Six cars with little injuries, but one, one turned."
"Flipped?"
"Yes," Caleb nods and gestures something flipping several times. "A man's arm was..." Caleb makes his own dangle limply. "It was almost not attached anymore? Caduceus does the sewing, the nerves, I do not understand it all..."
"Jesus."
"Yes! For three straight hours he must do this, he cannot stop! The real doctors had other calls! And then he goes out and sits with the, the wife! For another hour! Talking to her until she is not crying!"
Four hours. Molly can't imagine. "Are all firbolgs, like, floppy-eared angels?"
"Ich weiss nicht." Caleb shrugs helplessly. "But I only know because I saw him late at night and said, 'You look tired, are you okay,' and he told me the story, and said, he is so, so happy! Because he thinks the man's arm will be okay, and he got to meet the wife, who was very nice." Caleb gesticulates again. "And this man cannot code, so he is useless?"
"I hear Caleb Yelling," someone in front of them says, making them both jump. It's a half-elf in jogging gear, maybe early twenties, with shoulder length blond hair.
"You fucking scared me," Caleb laughs. He clearly recognizes them - that makes sense, considering this person knows Caleb's name. "Oh! Bryce! This is Mollymauk Tealeaf, my boyfriend." Caleb turns to Molly and smiles. "Molly, this is Bryce, they, they are in technical security also."
"I've heard a lot about you," Bryce says, extending a hand. They - they? don't seem to be the least bit surprised by how Molly looks, which is somewhat unusual. Molly grins and shakes their hand. "I heard your boyfriend yelling across the road and knew it was him."
"He feels very strongly about some things," Molly says with mock seriousness, making Bryce laugh.
"I was telling Molly about the turned car, the flipped car," Caleb says defensively.
"Oh! On the 210?" Bryce sucks in some air through their teeth. "Yeah, that took out the power for a couple blocks."
"I meant about Caduceus," Caleb says. "He sewed the man's arm back on, it was almost off."
"JESUS. They let you do that if you're still in med school?"
"All the other doctors were busy. And he did it!" Caleb gestures more.
Bryce leans over to Molly. "Why are we mad about this?" they stage whisper.
"Because some technical people don't appreciate genius outside of their own fields and this is clearly an example of someone talented," Molly rehashes.
"Ah."
"Bryce, you are not like this. I was not talking about you."
Bryce waves their hand dismissively. "I know, I know." They look to Molly again. "Hey, I like your tattoo."
"Thanks!" Molly beams and holds his arm up. "It's fresh." He holds still for the usual no-touch inspection, and something clicks in his head; he turns to Caleb. "Can you tell them about the thing that just happened?"
"Was? Oh!" Caleb looks to Bryce. "Dr. Errenis was outside!"
"That's not the part I meant," Molly admonishes.
"That's pretty big news," Bryce argues.
"Dr. Errenis was outside and agreed to be my adviser."
Bryce's eyes widen. "He what?"
"He did," Molly beams.
"He didn't!"
"I was there," Molly singsongs.
Bryce throws their arms up. "Has Caleb explained this guy? He's a kingmaker. He worked on the original Google algorithm shit. He spent six years on a government project that nobody knows anything about."
"He punched you in the face once and it was awesome," Molly finishes.
Bryce turns to Caleb. "I like him," they say, pointing to Molly. "Keep him."
Caleb rubs at his eyebrow. "For as long as he will tolerate me," he promises. "But. Seriously. Dr. Errenis knows someone on my current freelance job, so he will be paying attention to that work also. Pressure."
"Not your favorite," Bryce allows.
"But he'll do great," Molly interjects. "And even if Dr. Errenis changes his mind tomorrow and won't TA for Caleb anymore, Caleb will still be amazing and go wherever he wants."
"Caleb, does this guy have a sibling?"
"Lots." Caleb's brows knit together. "Sort of."

TAYLOR SWIFT FT. BRENDON URIE - ME!
[3.53]
Things have changed for "ME!"...
Alex Clifton: A lead single should not make me think, "Oh, is this the Kidz Bop version?" [3]
Abdullah Siddiqui: This isn't the Old Taylor or the New Taylor. It's some entity so devoid of anything remotely substantive it doesn't warrant a human name. And I'm not very familiar with this Brendon Urie, but his delivery of the line "and you can't spell awesome without 'me'" sounds like the sonic embodiment of a Disney XD mid-season replacement choking on its own blue-cotton-candy puerilism. And I know that makes literally no sense but it's honestly the best way I know how to describe it. [2]
Taylor Alatorre: On the one hand, this was designed to subvert as few expectations and step on as few toes as a late 2010s Taylor Swift lead single can. On the other hand, it commits so hard to the bit that it ends up becoming a Lonely Island parody of the kind of post-Glee positivity pop that fueled the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign. Our culture may be more jaundiced since then, but the market for that stuff hasn't gone away, and Swift and Urie deliver the message in a way that feels more true to how people actually consume those songs. Rather than offering the prize of social recognition as a package deal with some nebulous invocation of societal change, they make a beeline for the inner voice of narcissism that resides within the overworked neoliberal subject. They listen to that voice, they give it what it wants, and the result is a communal celebration of self-regard that, in all its candidness and mutual puffery, makes you feel connected to something larger than just another grueling megastar album cycle. Unfortunately, that "something larger" happens to be the same collective unconscious that apparently just wants Panic to be the "High Hopes" band now. [7]
Jessica Doyle: It's catchy, granted, but so insistently, aggressively vapid that I am resisting the obvious conclusion that Taylor Swift actually thinks that this is work to be proud of. It makes more sense as a reconciliation of three opposing forces: she wants to make music; she feels responsible for the multi-hundred-dollar machine she's spent half her life putting in motion; and she dislikes and resents the performer (maybe also the person) she's become. That would explain pairing a catchy song with lyrics such as "can't spell awesome without ME!" and a video whose final shots suggest she is actually made of toxic rainbow sludge. [3]
Katherine St Asaph: A garish mess in exactly the same way "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" was. Yelpy vocals, forced whimsy, obnoxious spoken word, slapdash everything -- well, almost everything. The chorus is the second song in a year to rip off Emeli Sandé's "Next to Me," which really wasn't in need of two ripoffs. The old Taylor can't come to the phone right now, because she's been replaced with the New Boring. Brendon Urie is the best thing about this, though I'd rather listen to three minutes of him singing Vines. [3]
Tobi Tella: Can something be inoffensive enough that it becomes offensive? It's hard to imagine a song this generically pleasant and basic angering people off the heels of some of the Reputation singles, but here we are. It's disappointing to see Taylor put out yet another vapid lead single devoid of any deep themes, but goddamn if this didn't grow on me almost immediately. It's just so much dumb fun, and even though these two people are capable of much more and I'll probably forget about it in a few months I will definitely scream it every time it comes on the radio for now. [6]
Will Adams: The singular badness of Taylor's past three lead singles can all be boiled down to their overblown-ness, whether in song, in video, or in their inevitable absorption into The Discourse. But "ME!" is a special kind of bad, one whose wrongness comes from all directions to create something truly confusing. There's the sonic rehashing of a single from two albums back (also those terrible horns), inert lyrics that offer nothing recognizably Swift, the aesthetic 180 that makes Reputation feel even more pointless and, worst of all, the patronizing kids show affect. It's really hard to figure out what she was trying to do here. Without Max Martin's catchphrases, Shellback's sheen, or even Jack Antonoff's weirdness, we're left with an overblown Train song. Here's hoping, come the album, she keeps her promise that we'll never find another like "ME!". [1]
Jibril Yassin: Taylor Swift loves dispatching red herrings for her forthcoming albums in the form of lead singles. While she couldn't fully commit to the heel turn, Reputation went out of its way to show her songwriting capacities hadn't diminished, but it says a lot that I already want the Right Said Fred-aided Taylor back. "ME!" flows and surges with the pop efficiency she's mastered, but the lyricism resembles a once-sharp camera lens out of focus. Draping herself in the sounds she last used on Reputation, now drenched in major-key sunshine, also feels like a serious misstep when a theatre-kid diva like Brendon Urie decides to show up and completely steal the show. A song like "ME!" calls for high theatrics and powerful vocals and here, Taylor doesn't play to her strengths. [3]
Katie Gill: Taylor Swift was one of the first people to sign on for the movie-musical Cats. I'm not saying this just because that fact brings me joy and happiness every time I remember it, but because you don't agree to be in a show that features tap-dancing beetles, a magic show, and a character called Skimbleshanks the Railway Cat unless you have a healthy appreciation for cheesiness. And this song further proves that Taylor Swift is fully embracing the concept of cheese. Why else would she include lyrics like "hey kids! Spelling is fun!". But three things prevent this song from reaching its full, beautiful, glorious Gouda potential. One: the fact that the chorus seems designed from the ground up to play in a Target commercial. Two: the fact that the lyrics never get past the braggadocio, "I'm so awesome" hubris that tainted a lot of her Reputation-era work. Three: Brendon Urie's existence on the track. [6]
Ryo Miyauchi: Taylor's past fuck-yous to her former guys worked because she didn't leave room for them to speak in the song's narrative or actually in the music itself. Brendon Urie in "ME!" functions as wish fulfillment on top of wish fulfillment, singing the ideal response from the man to go with Taylor's perfect last words. His presence is extra fluff that the track can do without, but he's just one of many campy toppings that sugarcoats the stinging bitterness at the song's core to the point they wash away any taste when consumed. The cliche series of contrasts in the pre-chorus, the Sesame Street bridge, filler rhymes just to get to the next lyric -- all of this lyrical blandness doesn't help prop Taylor up as the underdog to cheer for in this breakup. [4]
Joshua Copperman: Every part of this song sounds like other songs that were successfully upbeat without being too cutesy. "ME!" isn't one of those. Like former contemporary Katy Perry with her "Swish Swish" video, Swift actively tries to be cringey but the attempts at cringe make her cringey. It's like Patrice Wilson's self-conscious follow-ups after "Friday" if he was given a Dave Meyers video budget. Taylor's own friend-by-her-right-ay Brendon Urie helps a little bit, because he's good at hamming it up, but while Taylor has pulled off hamminess in the past ("Blank Space" is one of her most-loved songs for a reason), this doesn't suit her. Even the lines about fighting in the rain feel like perfunctory good lyrics. The rest of the album will probably be fine, as even 1989 led with "Shake It Off." But even that song's bridge didn't have "spelling is fun." [3]
Jacob Sujin Kuppermann: For a second, right around "spelling is fun," I thought this would ascend, phoenix-like, into glorious schlock. But before and after that incredible interlude, "ME!" is not even the exciting kind of trash. It's content to just be mediocre, occasionally winking at the camera in ways that its authors clearly think is endearing but mostly come off as desperate. It's an emphatic shrug of a song, at once saying nothing and doing so loudly. [1]
Scott Mildenhall: Tonally aimless, it's very hard to deduce the spirit in which this is meant. In its most desperate moment -- yes, "spelling is fun!" -- it doesn't so much tip its hat to the audience as frisbee it into their face, but at the same time it's not so ironic as to be mean-spirited. As a whole, it's like a Wiggles mash-up of "Blank Space" and "We Go Together", and it's hard to know how anyone, whether their intentions were wholesome or cynical, would ever reach that by design. Perhaps this is simply just a spectacular misfire. The thematic mismatches, zero-dexterity crowbarring of aphorisms, desultory brass parps and gossamer-thin hook suggest seriously misplaced ambition. The one time "ME!" seems to be heading in its intended direction is its conclusion, at which it becomes an ever-ascending celebration. By then, though, it's already dug itself a deep hole to fly out of. [5]
Alfred Soto: The first time she's sounded manic and desperate, like someone pleading for her life; she could've titled it "You Must Love Me." [3]
Stephen Eisermann: Remember when everyone said "Look What You Made Me Do" was Taylor's worst lead single and it could never be worse? I do. And guess what? This is worse. [1]
Jonathan Bradley: "ME!" takes as its starting point the belated success of "Delicate," the late-cycle Reputation single that helped remind more than a few listeners and critics that they'd radically misinterpreted that album on its release. It makes sense that Taylor Swift would return to the source of that renewed goodwill, and this new single does sound designed as a rebirth of sorts: it is sunny and outward-looking after an insular and intimate record. It's also unashamedly and jubilantly corny. That should not surprise; Swift has never only been a dextrous chronicler of emotional contours, and corn has been a part of her songwriting toolbox going back at least to the time she wrote a gushing romance starring Romeo and Juliet that ended with a marriage and hefty key change. "ME!" is unabashed in its goofiness, pairing that dorkiness with the frivolity of "Shake It Off," her biggest hit to date. Panic! At the Disco's Brendon Urie fits in well with this theatricality, and Swift helps temper his archness; he's had "High Hopes," but never this much fun. And it's this sense of fun that makes "ME!" so enjoyable. This is a song that sees the strangenesses and imperfections of ourselves and the people around us, and greets them with optimism and -- Reputation hasn't entirely left us -- a bit of wanton selfishness. I've been to plenty of Taylor Swift shows and, as with "Shake It Off" or "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together" or "This is Why We Can't Have Nice Things" -- I can already tell how much of a blast of a setlist-capper "ME!" will be. [8]
Joshua Minsoo Kim: "Taylor finger, Taylor finger, where are you?" [1]

Drinks On Me
Uni and research has kicked up a FUCK ton for me, so I apologize for going AWOL on everyone, especially to those Iâve promised stories/updates on. But thank you for sticking through and I hope you enjoy this as much as I did while writing it! (I had the utter, horrified realization I basically was gone for roughly a year. I am... so sorry OTL....)
Junker-Adventurer!Reader x Junkrat mini-fic. NB reader, SFW (except for a bit of swearing). To celebrate having 45+ followers <3 Never thought Iâd make it this far, so cheers!
Itâs been a long day.Â
The sun is beginning to set above the horizon and you thank the heavens for small mercies. The heat dissipates from the air as fast as the scorching sun rays fade. You see a scraggy outcrop of rocks ahead in the distance: perfect place for a break. With a bit of encouragement, you urge your battered motorbike onward.Â
By the time you reach the rocks, the air is cool and downright delicious. With a flick of your foot, the stand pops out and youâre letting your bike lean and rest. A quick circling reassures you that youâre alone and you finally relax, stretching out the stiff joints from sitting and riding all day.Â
You unpack and settle down. A bit of foraging yields just enough twisted branches and bone-dry sticks for a nice small fire. You double-check the crate youâve got strapped onto the back of your motorcycle: nice and tight, not going anywhere. Visions of gold dance in your head as you think about the profit these babies are gonnaâ bring you. Junkers will pay coin for booze, but rumor has it the Queen herself would paid handsomely for specialty liquor imported (stolen) from the outside.Â
Usually, youâd never risk building a fire but youâre feeling confident. Thereâs something about tonight that feels different: the air is (marginally) crisper and the stars feel brighter. Despite being a ragtag outsider, youâve always enjoyed Junkertown. The Junkers made for vivacious, if not interesting company. And the thought of refreshing your rations and supplies definitely put an extra pep in your step.Â
You rustle through your pack and produce a battered tin pot and a depressingly light sack. Normally, this would warrant a âtskâ but tonight, youâll feast. Within minutes, youâve got a nice little gruel going. Some precise rigging and youâve got a few lizards to roast as an entree.Â
You stare out into the distance, listening to the gentle snap and crackle of the fire, the sweet corn meal gruel bubbling away softly. Life is good.
Before your muscles could truly relax, you feel the skin on the back of your neck tingle. Before your mind could even register, youâve got your shot gun in your hands, pumped and ready to shoot at the intruder.Â
âEveninâ?â Came a nervous giggle.Â
You blink, âDo I... do I know you?â
A tall man stands before you, looking a bit worst for wear. Despite the impressive amount of bombs and ammo strapped to his chest, heâs bruised and cut up all over. His left eye bulged out in a black and blue mess.Â
Despite all this, the man puffs his chest out and looks insulted, âDo you... Do you know me? How do you NOT know me?â
You scowl, âBecause Iâve never met you before?â
âDarlâ,â he says, rather condescendingly, âI am a man whose reputation proceeds him. I am THE-â
You stand up aggressively, âI donât care WHO you are or who you THINK you are. What do you want?â
He scowls back, âHow the FUCK do you NOT know who I am?â
You feel a sharp pang of fear in your chest; this man isnât fucking around. The bandoliers on his chest glint dangerously in the fire light.Â
You raise the gun but take a step back, âAlright... who are you then?â
The man looks like heâs been waiting for this question his entire life. He throws his arms out in a grand, theatrical gesture and declares, âI am the INFAMOUS JUNKRAT!âÂ
â...who?â You raise a brow.Â
He drops his arms to his side and balls his fist, âOh come on! I didnât get fuckinâ kicked outtaâ Junkertown for nothinâ!â
You struggle to keep the chuckle down, âYou got kicked out of Junkertown?â
âOh? You think thatâs funny do you?â He snarls.Â
âWell.... yeah, you got kicked out of the most lax city on earth,â you laugh, incredulously. âYou can literally do almost anything there.â
âLax?â He sputters, âLAX?! I couldnât get a bomb in edgewise anywhere with olâ Queenie up my arse about it!âÂ
You lower your gun, giving him your most disarming smile, âSheâs got a point there... Junkrat? You said?â
âThe one and only,â he grins back, matching your charm with his.Â
You take the time to look at him: underneath the soot and dirt, and despite the nasty shiner heâs sporting, heâs not bad to look at. Even though heâs a few meters from you, you can smell the smoke on him, that burnt charred smell... of... lizards?
You jump, âSHIT!â
He starts back, shocked, then realizes why you freaked out.Â
You toss the gun aside and rescue the lizards from the fire and throw them on your pack to save them from completely scorching.Â
You stand back up, dusting your hands, âAlright. So. We can stand around all day and you can be insulted with me not knowing who you are...âÂ
He crosses his arms, a hint of a smile playing on his lips, âOr?â
âWe can sit down and enjoy some charred lizard and corn gruel,â you gesture openly.Â
The tall man slouches a bit and smiles sheepishly, âYeah, Iâd like that a lot.â
You plop down onto the dirt and offer him a blackened lizard on a stick.
He takes it and plops down by you, âThanks, mate.â
You watch him tackle the meat with ferocity, âYou always do this? Stumble into peopleâs camps and get insulted when they donât know who you are?â
He pauses mid-bite, âOnly when Iâm particularly hungry.â
You give him a friendly kick, âYou couldâve just fucking asked!â Â
He laughs and goes back to ripping another mouthful off the lizard. You observe him and his injuries: all the mottled bruises, the nicks and scratches all over his body. Theyâre fresh.Â
âGot yourself in a fight recently?â You ask casually, but quietly your ears are perked. A knot of regret begins forming in the lower pits of your stomach: what kind of trouble could this one potentially bring?
He makes an awkward gasping noise, trying to talk and swallow lizard at the same time, âSure did. Showed those drongos what for!â
You smile, eyes casually flitting around and behind his hunched figure, âWhat was the fight about?â
âOh the usual,â he straightens up and takes a deep breath, ââOh Junkrat you canât mod the mech with that!â or âJunkrat you canât throw that at the Queen!ââ
You blink, âYouâre a mech fighter?â
He scoffs and rolls his eyes, âAs if Iâd be any of those hot-headed ego maniacs!â
You scoff back and raise a brow, leaning towards the fire to grab the bubbling corn gruel off the embers, âAlright, then what is it that you do, Junkrat?â
âIâm a mech mechanic,â he puffs out his chest and crosses his arms. âIâm trying to work me way up through the ranks right now.â
âThereâs ranks?â You give a bemused smile.Â
âOh sure,â he nods emphatically, âYou start off as a complete bottom of the bucket mechanic, doing stupid shit like polishing the weapons then you work your way up before they trust you enough to start unscrewing shit and putting shit back together.â
âAnd where are you right now?â You blow on the corn gruel and tuck in.Â
Junkrat looks particularly proud of himself, hooking his two grenade straps with his thumbs, âI craft the explosives.âÂ
âImpressive,â you rummage through your coatâs inner pockets, before finally finding your flask.
He flicks his eyes up, interested, âNow, what do you have there, mate?â
You pause, meeting his eyes. You didnât want to admit it. But the way he said it was slow, and low, like he was asking a dangerous question. And it made you...feel.Â
You clear your throat and unscrew the flaskâs top, continuing to give your best disarming smile, âI never told you what I do for a living, did I?â
âYou certainly didnât,â he finished his lizard and tossed it behind him with a laugh. âSo, who do I owe the pleasure of meeting this eveninâ?â
âWell,â you gently shake the flask, gauging how much is left, âMy name is *Y/N* and I am you local, friendly booze supplier to Junkertown.âÂ
âOh my,â he grins, leaning forward, âSo I can thank many a wild nights and shitty mornings to you, huh love?â
You find yourself chuckling, almost missing the fact that he just slipped a pet name into that interaction.
âPartially,â you take a sip, âLord knows Junkertown must use more than just me considering how much you Junkers drink like itâs your lifeblood.â
He holds a hand out. Itâs a familiar gesture for you, a bonding ritual really with any stranger youâve met. And honestly, itâs just good manners out here. You pass the flask to him, your fingers grazing his during the hand-off and you find yourself lingering a bit longer than you wanted.
You clear your throat again but he doesnât seem to notice. He takes an appreciative sip and smacks his lips, a confused expression forming.Â
Taking advantage of the situation, you lean in and whisper conspiratorially, âNot what you expect?â
âItâs... light, and uhm, whatâs the word,â heâs scrunching his face in thought. âDelectable? No... delicate! Itâs delicate tasting.â
Keeping the hushed tone, you grin, âBetween you and me, I hate the way most liquor tastes. This is just my own personal brew.â
âIâve... Iâve never tasted anything like this,â heâs taking another swig, trying to parse out the flavors and notes.Â
âYeah, you get bored on the road, you start mixing and blending your own brews,â you jerk a thumb towards your bike.Â
âYou travel alone or is this a group venture?â he gestures generally.Â
âI work alone,â you shrug, turning your gaze towards the fire. You feel yourself drifting a bit.Â
âDo you like it?âÂ
âI do,â you murmur.
âWasnât a very enthusiastic âI do,ââ he elbows you in the ribs gently and youâre suddenly pulled back, very aware of how close he is to you.Â
You blink for a moment and put on another amiable grin, âHaha, I do, I really do! Itâs quite fun and itâs a decent adventure most of the times.â
âAnd the other times?â He asks, softly, in that same dangerous, low tone from before.
âItâs... quiet. Youâre by yourself a lot on the road. So itâs... quiet,â you reply, a bit more morose than you intended.Â
âWell then,â he stretches his arms above his head, âGood thing I inconvenienced you and stumbled onto your camp, huh?â
You laugh, âYeah, I didnât think Iâd have any dinner guests but this was a nice change of pace.â
He smiles then his frame shifts a bit awkwardly and his voice lowers, âUhm, truth be told *Y/N* I wasnât feelinâ too great when I did run into you. But this was fun. I needed it.â
âI think I needed this too.â
He takes a deeper swig from the flask before handing it back to you, âIâll confess, Iâm on my second strike with the Queen. One more mess-up and Iâm not allowed back into Junkertown.â
âAh,â your eyes flick once again to his bruises and cuts, âShe can be a real hardass, huh?â
âAnd then some,â he scoffs mirthlessly, âBut thanks, I mean it.â
âOf course,â you donât really know what to do so you give him a gentle pat on his knee.
He flinches at first but relaxes under your touch.Â
He clears his throat, a clear flush growing on his cheeks under all that dirt and grime, âSo, uhm, *Y/N*?â
âYes, Junkrat?â You smile. And itâs your real smile. You donât feel the need to put up disarming pretenses.Â
âCall me Jamie,â he grins sheepishly, âMy real nameâs Jamison but no one calls me that.âÂ
âAlright,â you nod, âYes, Jamie?â
âWere you just going to camp out here until tomorrow then head into Junkertown?â
âYeah, that is the plan. Why?â
âWell, uhm, not that Iâm shittinâ on your choice of accommodations but there are better places than outside at night in the Outback. It gets freezinâ cold,â he says seriously.Â
You hold back a snort and solemnly nod back, âAh yes, I hadnât considered that. In all my years of camping and trekking through here, the freezing cold!âÂ
âSo, I have a proposition for you,â Jamie opens his palms outwards like a salesman getting ready for his pitch.Â
âAlright, Iâm listening.â
âYou should come into Junkertown tonight. Stay at my place, and come tomorrow morning youâll be right there in town, ready to do business,â he says with a final, dramatic flourish of his fingers.Â
âYouâll be alright with that? A stranger crashing at your place?â You raise a brow, still smiling ear to ear.
âLeast I could do to pay you back for dinner and drinks,â he stands up and dusts himself off, before offering a hand to hoist you up.Â
You take it, bringing yourself up to your feet, âOh, my pleasure, really.â
He starts kicking sand into the fire and turns to you with a glint in his eyes, âOh, I should warn you thereâs only one bed back at my place.â
A shiver runs from the nape of your neck down your spine, âWell. You did say it gets freezinâ cold out here. We should make the most use of it.â
He stops, your matched boldness surprising him. He laughs a bit and says, âAfter a long work day tomorrow, will you have dinner with me again?â
âOf course,â you start packing up some of your gear. You flick your eyes towards him and with a leisurely softness in your voice, you reply, âDrinksâ on me.âÂ
