another majima rant letsgoooo
starting my yakuza journey with 0 made me hella confused with the age of the characters cause neither kiryu nor majima acted their age. i could suck up that kiryu is 20 but majima being barely 24 just didnt sit right with me at all. he had that vibe of someone experienced, just someone older. currently im ending the series and sweet jesus i adore the young majima with my whole heart. because he was SO young if you think about it!! and it shows!! and the difference between his character in 0 and in later games is so much more than just the mad dog act.
it might sound ridiculous since we all know the mental downgrade he gets from 0 to kiwami but hear me out when i say he gets so much more mature through the games starting from zero. i mean yes, sure this is the most composed and well behaved majima we ever see but its also probably the lowest point we ever see him at, at least thats how i see this. and it makes so much sense that when he finally breaks free just for one moment he acts so so intense in a much different way than what we see later in games.
because yes, the mad dog was an act at least partially but what we see him do, when we see him completely fuck up the dojima family is not an act. this is a young man shaking from emotions doing things that might have terrible consequences but he just doesnt care. and we never see it again as after all majima stays pretty darn calculated and logical in his actions. yakuza 0 is the only moment we see him genuinely loose himself to the reckless need of self expression for the sake of it. later in the games, for example the rooftop scene with kiryu, he actually lets himself be persuaded to rejoining the clan even tho that means going against his own ideals. hear me out when i say young majima would never do that.
and i could also talk how probably its as much being young as it is getting severly punished for standing up for himself and learning the tough way that staying authentic wont always get him what he truly desires
i love his character with my whole heart but the young still somewhat naive goro will forever have a special place in my heart
