The Detective Koushen always cracks me up because Hakuba is so upset at Heiji's investigation methods when Heiji is still also the son of a cop and started with at least some boundaries. Meanwhile Conan is like...

yknow, i love kaishin/shinkai but every time i read an angsty fic (majority) my heart drops so far i feel it in my feet
#mildrant
i keep thinking about how people portray kaito, when to me he’s one of the loneliest possible characters with even fewer people knowing his identity because it can put them in danger. not just that but it also puts HIM in danger, just because he’s wanted by police and forces everywhere he goes— without knowing the actual reasons why. realistically his life is always in danger, more so than shinichi’s. he has the organisation targeting him, police, even detective friends and on top of that having your best friend bash KID: idk but in his position i don’t know how much he’s been through… i sometimes think he’s far more vulnerable because he has to put up more walls and façades.
one reason why i support kaishin is because shinichi doesn’t unnecessarily have a reason to catch him- knowing him he’ll want to find out more and have a proper reason to go after him. he KNOWS kaitou kid isn’t a bad person. he doesn’t know his identity or want to pursue him recklessly, and i should think kaito appreciates his detective a lot. hakuba and aoko give me mixed feelings.. i like aokaito but… i just think relationships based around honesty would be better.
i love aoko, i really do.
kaito really deserves someone who loves and understands him at his best and at his worst. his support system is much smaller than shinichi’s. to top it off, kaito is really devoted to his dad’s cause that he had to pick up OUT OF NOWHERE. that amount of burden after losing his dad, a somewhat absent mom and then finding out about jii san having to take on the mantle… i can’t imagine how much pain is repressed on his part.
in short i really love kaito kuroba as a character and adore him strongly. fics that use his phobia to attack him or to cause him heavy fear saddens me a lot. i still reinstate my point that kaito is one of the loneliest characters i’ve seen and characters that have to play an ‘antagonistic’ role in order to protect people they love and avenge their family just hits really hard
along with magic kaito’s series unlikely to ever get an ending or closure…
Kaito Kuroba deserves so much better.
idk finding people from dcmk comm or kaishin/shinkai fans who have opinions about this
also kaishin/shinkai roleplayers please hmu i’m at a destructive point

Sure! When you have time I would love it if you any interactions between Saguru and any of the Gosho girls. It doesn't have to be shipped or whatever, but it's just because I've read so many of his interactions with the Gosho boys and I feel like the girls are underrated in that sense. I love crack and I love Saguru and I adore your writing and edits :)
Hey anon from 2018, lmao. You're right, there really do need to be more interactions between Saguru and the girls. I have a WIP I started recently that I feel really shows Aoko's acuity. It's not crack, but instead a tense interaction between two friends.
Eventually this'll make its way to AO3, but for now, here it is:
--
“So, Saguru-kun…”
Saguru finds himself bracing. Aoko has seemed to be in a strange mood the entire evening. He’d almost wondered if she was irritated with him at first, or maybe just more disappointed about Kuroba’s last-minute cancellation than she wanted to let on. But their plans had gone as expected otherwise; they studied, watched a show Aoko had been excited to show him over some reheated leftovers, all without incident. Now they’d settled in the living room, occupying themselves with their own activities.
But now, as casual as she was trying to seem, Saguru detected an underlying tension.
“Yes, Aoko-san?” He kept his eyes on his book.
“Did you know that Aoko’s dad thought Kaito was KID once?”
Saguru’s entire train of thought stuttered to a halt. Every thought vanished — and then his mind raced with questions. For what reason was she bringing this up? What kind of reaction was she expecting?
Her gaze was drilling into him, he could tell. She hadn’t turned away from her video game, but she had to be concentrating on him in her periphery. The sensation of it raised the hair on the back of his neck..
He turned the page, but wasn’t reading anymore.
“Did he? I’ve never heard anything about that,” Saguru said mildly. His heart rate was elevated. He focused on breathing normally.
“Yeah!” Aoko said, and she said it with a giggle. A feint. “He told me that and I thought it was so strange. Sure, he’s obnoxious, but he’s not stupid Kaitou KID.”
It was best to leave space in the conversation. He didn’t say anything, waiting for Aoko to continue.
“Anyway, Dad got a look at him at one heist, and he was sure he looked like Kaito. So to prove him wrong, I asked Kaito on a date!”
“A date?”
“Yep! I mean, thinking back that was pretty silly, but it got him to come. But isn’t that so weird? That he’d even think for a second that Kaito was KID?”
She sounded so cheery. The version of herself she put on in class when she was getting along with everybody. Masking away her acute intelligence and calculations. He used to think she wore her feelings on her sleeve - and to an extent she did. But these days he knew that there was plenty she kept under wraps. She and Kuroba were truly quite the pair.
“It does seem like a strange conclusion for the inspector to come to.” He tried to keep his voice neutral as he could. “How did the date go?”
Aoko stuck her tongue out, and for the moment turned her eyes back toward the screen, organizing her character’s inventory. “Oh, you know. Bakaito. He was his normal annoying self, but he showed up on time. We met up at Tropical Land and had a lot of fun! We saw a 3D movie and everything.” She paused, then added, “Actually, I even handcuffed us together. Which was probably overkill, honestly.”
Great minds think alike.
“And the heist?” Saguru asked.
“Oh, the heist still happened. And Kaito was with me the whole time.”
“Well, I imagine that remedied the inspector’s suspicions?”
“Yeah. Dad never said anything about it again.”
The conversation lulled into silence, but the tension in the room was palpable.
“It’s just weird. That’s the only time Dad has ever had a suspect. Honestly, I don’t get why he’d even entertain the idea.”
Saguru hmmed, hoping it sounded like agreement.
“I mean, Kaito is way too young to be KID. Everyone knows Kaitou KID has to be in at least his forties.”
“That does seem to be the most prominent theory,” Saguru said neutrally. It wasn’t the most satisfactory response, he knew. But he could toe this line, if he focused on the commonly-held beliefs and not his own hypotheses and opinions.
“I wonder who Kaitou KID actually is. Whoever it is, I really can’t stand him. I’d like to give him a piece of my mind for all the trouble he’s causing everybody.”
“That’s fair of you.” Saguru wouldn’t condemn KID himself. But he’s already made clear to her that he doesn’t share the same hostility. “What with KID’s talent, I wouldn’t be surprised if the public never comes to know his identity.” After a moment, he amended, “Not to imply the task force is lacking in talent or capability. Your father has prevented many thefts from coming to fruition.” Never mind the fact KID so far still hadn’t truly stolen anything regardless. “But no matter how successful plans are on this side, KID has still proven successful as an escape artist, if nothing else. We’ll just have to see if ever he’s caught, or we get a hint.”
“It would be nice, though,” Aoko said, and Saguru had a hard time reading her tone. “To know who it is.”
What was she trying to accomplish here? It felt like she was fishing. Like she wanted a specific response from him. She might want him to agree that it was a ridiculous idea, confirm that the suspicions were completely unfounded. But he couldn’t imagine lying to her outright. But on the other hand…
“Have you ever suspected anyone of being KID, Saguru-kun?”
Ah.
“Well,” he said.
He couldn’t bring himself to lie to her, but he certainly couldn’t tell the truth. Saguru wouldn’t betray Kuroba like that; Kuroba may not trust him, but Saguru wasn’t going to confirm Kuroba’s own impressions.
And it wouldn’t just be betraying Kuroba. It would be a betrayal of one of Aoko’s closest friends.
No winning. Catch-22.
He forced himself to turn the question over in his mind, as slowly as he could allow without seeming as if he took too long. It wasn’t like he’d obtained any real proof. Other than observable evidence that Kaito wasn’t KID. And the DNA proof he’d destroyed. Of course, Saguru knew, but technically he’d proved the opposite.
“You’ll laugh, but I actually suspected Kuroba once myself.”
Aoko paused her game. “You did?”
And now the tension amplified exponentially. Did she know? He’d suspected before that she might. With how perceptive she was, how could she not have at least considered it?
Even then, that didn’t mean he could confirm it. Kuroba was the only person who could do that.
Steady. “Yes, well. I did test the theory, and my suspicions were proven false.” Based on the happenings, anyway.
“How did you test it?”
Saguru crooked a slight smile now. Casual. Easy. Amused. “Much like you, I handcuffed myself to him just before the heist began.”
She still didn’t say anything.
“So, in both of our cases, the heist still went on. So that would appear to clear Kuroba’s name on two different accounts,” he said lightly.
“Yeah, I guess it does.”
She’d slipped a little, seemed more pensive than casually amused. She recovered quickly. “It’s so funny that both of you thought it was Kaito.”
The way she continued circling, the way she persisted… on some level, she must know.
Aoko asked, “What made you think it was him, anyway?”
At least the capacity of the labs was something he wasn’t at liberty to discuss. “Probably proximity bias,” Saguru said. It wasn’t entirely untrue. “KID has a tendency for elaborate magic tricks, and Kuroba is certainly the most talented magician I’d ever met.” And then, after a beat: “But there’s plenty of talented magicians out there.”
Aoko hmmed, and fell silent again. Saguru imagined her putting him under a microscope, considering everything he said. Everything he didn’t say.
She unpaused her game and resumed playing. “Yeah, Bakaito could never be KID,” she said.
But all Saguru could think was that there was no way she didn’t know how false that was.

I make sense of KID getting Sera’s gender wrong partly on account of I see both of them as genderqueer and I feel like Kaito would have been wary of that when he noticed her body and voice had female features despite her style of dressing and speaking being masculine, despite Gosho’s writing choices Kaito seems to get along better with girls than boys (it was not that weird to him that girls would give him chocolate despite having no knowledge of Valentines Day he just wanted context, he calls his female friends by their first names and for the most part they return that closeness and he fits in with them with minimal disguises too) and Aoko’s a tomboy so he understands masculinity and femininity aren’t so black and white. Gender Expression is different from Gender Identity, also intersex people exist.
The other part has to do with Masumi being kind of in hiding. I don’t think she would have brought any ID with her that could have traced her to her family (and her sex assigned at birth or legal gender) as for the event she was very much reminiscent of her first appearance when she was concealing her true identity probably because it was very public. This also explains why she wasn’t that active during the heist despite KID being a magician and wasn’t too worried about anything that could have been in her pockets when KID took her clothes.
I headcanon that the main reason KID chose Sera was because she was wearing a hat indoors without criticism and he could use it to avoid the fish in the aquarium (he’s fine with other sea creatures/marine life and was probably very grateful to the turtle) and he was familiar with her friends so if he panicked it was somewhat familiar territory, plus Ran reminds him of Aoko and Sonoko’s a KID fan. Unfortunately despite using the men’s bathroom and knowing that KID often uses stun guns to knock out men and mostly does so in bathrooms so he can steal their clothes Masumi reacted with violence when this happened to her and he was chased out.
On one hand, Kaito doesn't recognize Sera's gender because he's living in the environment that opened to lots of possibilities is interesting. On the other hand, this shows Sera has reached a new level of gender non-conformity that even Kaitou KID can't figure it out. If that's the latter, then what an achievement 👏👏👏

Could you please share your thoughts on Kuroba Toichi? What was he like as a husband, father and master (Jii)? How did he get along with Aoko and her parents? Did his civilian life have any ties to Kid as a suspect or rival? What was he like as a Magician, he had many fans and seemed close with his teacher? How was he as Kaitou 1412/Kid, he seemed rather intimidating when he was meeting his 'big brother' Shinichi, Nakamori is very obsessed and he seems to have a rather 'good' reputation?
I will choose to ignore the events of M27 and respond.
Well…
I like to think he was the first one to fall in love, the Phantom Lady also left notes about her heists. Maybe even Chikage did dramatic performances like Kaito? Only instead of a magic act, it was a house of horrors.
My thought is that Toichi fell in love with her on one of her heists and started looking for information about her, he wanted to get to know her better and know her story.
I imagine it was frustrating for him not to be able to ask out the girl who had been looking for him for so long, and then all of a sudden she… backs out! I like to think he was devastated… But then more heist notes appeared, he had hope!
Well, I like to think that Toichi was in love and crazy enough to say "She's great and I'm in love! Since she's a thief she surely won't trust me if I'm not one right?! Then I'll become one!"
When he sees her at the robbery where he meets her, Being the good magician that he is, he hides his feelings, but in reality he was quite excited and nervous to meet her, he rehearsed the words he would say to her a lot of times in the mirror because he was afraid of ruining it.
Since we don't get much of Toichi, I like to think of him as a fool in love with his scary wife. (I guess that's why I like Akako x Kaito). I mention all that to say, I think Toichi is a husband obsessed with his wife, and gives her a rose every morning. He's a magician! It must be easy for him to have flowers!
Oh, as a fun fact, I like the idea of Toichi being a housewife when he's not at work, though he can't cook at all and leaves that to Chikage.
I have this mental image of Toichi holding baby Kaito in one arm, while holding the vacuum cleaner with his free hand. Chikage then enters the house with a stolen painting and yells, "Honey, I'm home from work!". I like to think that Chikage sometimes helped him with his KID work.
So far, in almost all of Toichi's flashbacks, Kaito has appeared. Kaito literally met Yukiko in one of his classes!
Which leads me to think that he was the one who was primarily in charge of raising his son.
I can just imagine baby Kaito crying for his dad, and Chikage having to dress up as Toichi to stop Kaito from crying.
And her saying: "Why do you love him more? I had you with me for 9 months!"
In Jii's case, I feel like the reason he's so dedicated to serving him is because Toichi saved his life, not literally, but in a more metaphorical way, maybe Jii was in a bad place when he met Toichi, and it was an encounter that marked his life forever.
I feel like they both see each other as family, Jii was always constantly worried about Toichi's safety and health, I like to think that when he saw him planning robberies or magic tricks until late and it wasn't for a last minute performance, he would force him to go to sleep, something like:
"I'm a grown man now, I can sleep late if I want!"
"It's still bad for your health, drink this hot chocolate and go to sleep!" It has been mentioned that Toichi was one of the most famous magicians in Japan, and even had a nickname by which fellow magicians referred to him as "the magician of orient."
He even met his wife in Paris before he had a magic show.
That's why I imagine Toichi must have had a huge fan base, I think the way performers are treated in Japan it was probably known that he was married but no one knew who his wife was or if he had any kids.
I imagine Toichi taking baby Kaito to the supermarket, he has a cap and mask on but has to take the mask off when his son starts crying, then as he's comforting his son a fan sees him and is shocked because no one knew Kuroba Toichi had kids, Toichi notices this, when he makes sure Kaito is calm he puts him back in the stroller, looks at the fan, gives him a rose and winks "Let this be our secret." I think unlike Kaito, Toichi was luckier in the sense that aside from Nakamori, no one seemed too interested in him (I won't count Yuusaku for these situations).
I imagine that before he died he was very close to his former mentor, James Hopper.
I like the idea that Kaito and Judy actually met at some point in their childhood!
Maybe they even had play dates while their father and grandfather caught up.
I like to think that Toichi had a classy and silent version of KID, the last years he was active were probably when he became more bloodthirsty.
I want to believe that was because of Chikage! Toichi mentioned that he didn't like that kind of jokes, so I choose to believe that she corrupted him over time.
Also, maybe he wanted to seem hostile because a criminal organization was interested in him, and he thought that would keep them away.
I think Toichi talked a lot with Nakamori as KID, they got along well, but she really got on his nerves, almost as much as Kaito does.
I like to think that Toichi as KID would make such stupid and ridiculous comments to Nakamori like "I know you have a daughter, I have a son, you two should play together" and Nakamori would get angry and say that it was ridiculous "My precious daughter won't play with the son of a criminal, and that poor baby should grow up in a proper place!"
I'm sure Toichi once took Kaito on a robbery just to show him to Nakamori.
Toichi was a cool neighbor with a weird wife, so in conclusion they were both good but weird neighbors!
Midoriko got along well with Chikage, they were probably good friends, although it was hard for her to keep up with that tornado.
Nakamori once overheard them talking about murder, and that's how she found out that Chikage liked grotesque jokes, then she saw Kaito and Aoko playing with a retractable knife and didn't know how to feel.
On one hand, this somehow increased the creativity of the children, on the other… this was certainly worrying.
I think Toichi liked Aoko because she accepted Kaito as he was.
Tumblr media
I have the headcanon that Chikage is French! And therefore Kaito is half French, it's just not noticeable because he looks more like Toichi!
In the anime 1412, Chikage mentions that her first date with Toichi was at a French restaurant, which makes me wonder if they lived in Paris for a while before going to Japan. Toichi might have feared that Kaito suffered from xenophobia, perhaps even Kaito's Japanese wasn't too good back then.

Movie 10!!!! And i just realised I labeled the last movie number 10 but it was 9. Just gone to correct that.
Kaitou KID. Kaitou KID. Kaitou KID! I am very excited for "Hakuba" to appear.
And it starts by Kogoro nearly killing them all by crashing into the guard rail, as Ai helpfully points out.
The bombs are set! And Shinichi is asked to be kept behind as he was identified by his fingerprints. Well, I have to wonder how the man had Shinichi's, and everyone's, prints, as they wouldn't be in the police's system or otherwise because Shinichi would have a lot to explain as he's had his prints taken as Conan multiple times for cases. I guess it's a plot hole we're meant to ignore.
Okay, but I hate it when everyone is in danger but Shinichi only thinks about Ran. I wish they wouldn't do that. I get it he "loves" Ran but it doesn't mean he cares about the others any less. It's not like saying everyone would be weird.
Tumblr media
I love when Kaito is reflected in Shinichi's glasses.
Ai is so calm about the situation. Well, since meeting Shinichi she's had her life put in danger so many times this must be another day for her.
I don't know why they can't inform Ran about the situation though, she's a young adult and I'm sure if she was told "your lives are in danger, don't leave the perimeters of the park" she would understand and keep the children inside.
KID MENTION.
The suspenders! I haven't seen them in a hot while, even thought they're probably one of the really useful and versitile of Shinichi's items.
Kogoro's grand plan is to throw Shinichi into the line of fire.
KAITO!
I bet Kaito was surprised to see his small husband below.
Kaito gets to be so feral this movie later on. It's one of my favourite scenes from him.
I love Ai just letting people in front of her to delay them from going on the ride.
Shinichi is quite knowledgeable about art, huh.
You know, Ran almost leaving the park wouldn't have happened if they had just informed her of the situation. I can understand not wanting the children to know, not because they wouldn't be able to handle the news, but rather they would do something stupid that could get them killed, but Ran? And Kazuha actually? They should have been informed.
Hello, Heiji.
WHY DO THEY NOT KNOW?! My god, why are they so stupid and infantilize the girls so much T-T THEY SHOULD KNOW.
I like this movie (it's a KID and Heiji movie, so that's a given) but there is some stupid aspects of it that drive me up a wall.
Kogoro is cool for a change and manages to inform the police to the danger they're in.
How did Ai give herself a fever?
KAITO! Here to help his tiny husband and husband's best friend.
The only time Heiji will get along with Hakuba because it's Kaito pretending to be him.
Kaito showing off his phishing skills. We stan a resourceful guy.
Lmao, Kaito showing off his skills by mimicking Hakuba so well he still rubs Heiji the wrong way.
It's a bit sad the only time Kogoro can treat Eri with respect when his and Ran's lives are in danger (not that he infored his ex of this fact despite asking for her help).
Kaito totally wanted to say "and thieves" after that sentence.
OKAY I NEED TO GUSH. Kaito taking Heiji's cellphone isn't just a hint for the two of them to say it's not Hakuba, he purposely takes the phone and then KNEELS so he can show SHINICHI. It's Shinichi he's investigating with first and forthmost! MY HEART!
Kaito's smile as he watches his small husband (and his friend I guess) solve the case.
Kaito whining about the paint on his shirt T-T I can't-
And Shinichi manages to get both of their attention, I guess as it looks like he's fleeing and they've been told to stop them from doing so. But like, they forgot the two adults-
AND KAITO MADE THEM REGRET THAT FOR TRYING TO ATTACK HIS TINY HUSBAND.
OOF.
There's Shinichi's leg broken.
It's a good thing he's got a knight in white looking over him.
I really like this part, it breaks up the tension of the movie a little, but it's just really fun with how everyone gets involved with catching the thief. Sonoko's part was my favourite, how she doesn't realize and saves the day.
Also everyone asking him "What are you going to do?" when they realise he tried to take Satou as a hostage. And it's finished with Takagi coming through with the ice cream.
It's a fun bit.
KAITO WAS HOLDING SHINICHI IN HIS ARMS T-T I CAN'T- Heiji you didn't need to explain how the rescue happened but I am so glad you did and fed us so well.
LMAO Heiji, sadly they're not the only one who want to take KID's life, I guess Snake has competition.
What did Kaito just use to cut through that roof. I want to know.
SHOW OFF KAITO, I SUPPORT YOU!
Kaito shooting all the windows! HE'S SO COOL. Shinichi, how does it feel to be out-cooled by your much cooler husband?
And off Kaito goes to Miracle Land to make sure his small husband does not get himself into anymore trouble, because he knows with his bad luck he will get in trouble.
HEIJI JUST BRAINING KOGORO WITH AN ASH TRAY T-T YOU'VE SOLVED CASES WHERE THAT KILLS INSTANTLY BOYS.
For once the police weren't incompetent in a case.
And Heiji makes Shinichi show off his pole dancing skills.
Shinichi is good with computers it seems, even though he's shown to be bad with video games XD I guess Agasa has taught him a couple of things (I'm not objecting to this but sadly I know it's only for this movie that he is).
AGASA BEING READY TO DIE WITH THE KIDS T-T MY HEART HE LOVES THEM SO MUCH HIS GRANDCHILDREN.
Megure and Shiratori staying behind as well T-T
I can't believe they didn't double-check that all the IDs were off the kids though.
At least Shinichi and Heiji were smart enough to take Kogoro's.
AND KAITO SAVES HIS TINY HUSBAND!
Heiji: Why is Kaitou KID here.
Shinichi: What do you mean? My husband has been with us since the middle of the investigation.

hakuba for the send u a character thing!
First impression
It was a long time ago- but I think I used to see him as a lot more logic-minded than I do now.
Impression now
At this point I see him as rather more flexible - as long as it fits the evidence, he'll go with it. Also... when you haven't pissed him off at first meeting (like Kaito and Hattori did) he's a real sweetheart. A good boy.
Favorite moment
Asking Kaitou Kid "Why did you do it?" at the end of the Adam's Smile heist. His very first. It's just... a character defining moment, and so iconic, especially with how Kid replies with "Isn't it your job to find out?"
I think it's got to be that moment that redefined who he was for himself, or the start of it, too.
Idea for a story
I've been coming up with a lot, but... oohhh.
Saguru being in Japan and calling his mother back home who he gets along with better than he does with his father, and chatting away about how things are going until she tells him that she thinks Japan is good for him, because she's not heard him this animated before.
(One I've suggested before is "Hakuba's time away from Japan being his time spent coming to terms with his deductions about Kid," but that'd take longer.)
Unpopular opinion
I think that the reason we mostly see him as a stuck up and kind of stand-offish person is that his first real appearances in MK had him as a gag manga detective who was let onto the crime scene via nepotism, the Twilight Mansion where he's introduced as having a pet hawk and a housekeeper, and... Detective Koushien, where he's on the back foot from the get go, before he's even arrived. Not to mention that in MK the story is told from the perspective of someone who should be wary of him.
I think that his natural state is probably that of someone who's naturally empathetic in spite of his supposed Lawful Good alignment. I don't think it's as much of an unpopular opinion to say he doesn't have many friends back home or in Japan, but... huh, hm.
I also don't think he's actually all that much of a womaniser/flirt. I think that's just how he thinks you're supposed to interact with women, and if someone flirted back, he wouldn't know how to handle the script being turned on him and he'd bluescreen. It's easier to interact with people if you're at a distance.
Favorite relationship
Kaito, because Kaito just pushes his buttons and forces Saguru out of his comfort zone, and off script. Quite literally, sometimes! In the sense of how Saguru has found himself thinking "hang on, that's- that's not how this goes? You aren't supposed to turn it on me?"
It also means he'll end up being dragged into things and into experiencing things he otherwise wouldn't.
Like... Kaito makes him go "I have no idea how to solve you." And it's so easy to see Saguru go "Am I about to do something very illegal because I just realised that I care about Kaito more than I care about the law? Unfortunately, yes" and it's wild to think that this could have already happened in canon (before the Chat Noir heist).
Favorite headcanon
Currently? The one I made about his Sherlock Bear.
The idea of him being a precocious little boy who isn't just trying to look smart to everyone (that comes later) but who really and honestly just... loved mystery stories. And then later wanted to use his abilities as a detective to help people.
But it all started with him as a little boy, reading aloud to his teddy bear.
Thanks! These are fun~

One of my favorite Detective Conan episodes is probably episode 538, the second part of Kaitou KID vs the Strongest Vault, the banter between Kaito and Conan was so cute, and the fact he sent the police away to talk to Kaito was feeding my Shinkai/Kaishin obsession, nothing tops when Conan brought up Kaito how usually choses to dress as women, and instead of it being turned into some sort of pervert joke or the usual "people dont expect women to commit crimes" Kaito just said smth along the lines of "i think its cute"
I just love how hes comfortable in his skin and he doesnt mind (probably even enjoys) doing and wearing feminine things and not in a "this is getting me to my objective" but "why not" ykk
He seriously couldve been the secretary and yet he chose not to </333

Mod Silver please go on a rant about characters you know and their interactions, I would love to hear it 🍿
Haha, oh dear! If you’re sure.
Kaitou KID has worked with a few others quite a bit, though not too willingly. He seems to be mostly focused on doing what he can involving as little people as he possibly can. He’s also quite friendless, if I’m to be honest (he has like…two established friends, and one is a 60-year-old who calls KID master). So unless the situation called for a team up, I think he would try to avoid it. That said, I think folks from this tournament he would willingly work alongside are: Phantom R, Parker, Tia, and maybe Kay Faraday (though I have the sneaking suspicion that KID would not like her due to trauma towards like…literally every other 17-year-old girl he has encountered. I think they could work indirectly though, dropping each other clues and holding each other’s back. But a direct team up? I don’t think KID would be too willing to pursue that DFLHSDFDS)
The Four Horsemen would fight anyone and everyone. I say this because the title as being the Horsemen seems to be rather closed and they wouldn’t want to share that spotlight, I feel. Besides, considering all they have gone through, I don’t think they’d be too keen on any other surprise thieves (let alone magician thieves).
To me, those who would be the most difficult to work with would Carmen Sandiego and Pierre Despereaux. Not that Carmen would be against a team-up, I distinctly remember her teaming up with the kids in the original series a time or two, but in terms of stealing? I don’t think she would be all too wiling to work alongside someone. Despereaux is in a similar boat as most of his actions usually end in some form of trickery. He called Shawn and Gus to the prison just so he could use them to break out. Heck, his whole introduction episode was exposing that some of his stolen goods were actually owned by him and he was using their “theft” to collect insurance money. He doesn’t do well with partnerships and almost always goes behind their backs (that is to say, make them think they won while he makes off with the treasure).
  I’d say the only difference between the two is that Despereaux would make folks feel like he is their most loyal ally before he stabs them in the back. Carmen would tell you to your face that she will stab you in the back.
Lupin III I can only base on the Count of Cagliostro film and the first episode of (what I assume) to be the original series. And I have to say, I don’t know what some would think of him. As established, Kaitou KID has beef with him and Carmen and Despereaux would absolutely go against him. Oh, but Tia would love him, I get the feeling. They share so much of the same energy, it’s ridiculous.
 Parker would get along great with the more child-like folks simply because that’s what she’s like. Anyone who’d be willing to have fun with a heist would probably fit wonderfully. She would absolutely make it a competition, like who could get through the ventilation system fastest or who can remain undetected longest. I think she would get along well with Phantom R (as I do believe his whole thing is replacing counterfeit paintings with the real ones) and, while probably a little confused why they’re returning something so expensive, would enjoy the challenge of putting it back. I think she’d also get along with Kay (even though I’ve yet to meet her. I just have a hunch).
Oh, and Mask DeMasque…bruh, no one would take him seriously. I feel they would all look at him, say “Aw, that’s cute,” applaud him for his efforts, and then move on. Even if he has accomplished a lot, I can’t think they would view him in much regard. (I know for sure that KID would think he was absolutely lame and a fraud).
Oh, and a quick bonus: Neal Caffrey would compete with Lupin III to charm the women, would only go against Carmen because he was forced to, would absolutely be outmatched by Parker and KID with their stunts, personal rivalry with Despereaux (they technically exist in the same canon! So I mean…), would think Tia is hilarious, and adopt Phantom R if for the kid’s fashion alone. Oh, and of course, would take Ron DeLite by the shoulders and tell him that his wife isn’t worth the stealing (if you know, you know).
Okay, I think that’s all there is for me to ramble about! I hope it didn’t bore you too much, haha.

Title: All Things Bright And Beautiful
Chapters: 1/1 Rating: E
Relationship: Kudou Shinichi | Edogawa Conan/Kuroba Kaito | Kaitou Kid
Summary: A tentative peace forms between the kingdoms of Ekoda and Beika, respite from the war-ravaged months and the persecution of all things magickal. As discontent citizens and pockets of rebellions arise, it is up to the victorious Crown Prince Kaito and his political prisoner, Knight Kudo, to be the symbol of their unity and future peace.
Or, in which Kaito and Shinichi really have no business falling in love, stuck on the brink of a political firestorm, but they do so anyway.
...
(excerpt from the fic)
“Okay,” Kaito said once they were alone, “let’s get on the same page.”
Get along with him, his father had said. Kaito really didn’t want to, but he would try. No one could say he hadn’t tried.
“You know why you’re here, yes?”
Kudo didn’t pretend to misunderstand what he was saying. There was no sarcastic quip about the war and their consequent surrender. Just as immovable as he was in the court, he nodded, making the motion look as regal as the king’s.
“I’m here as a deterrent for the assassins.”
“Yes—wait, what?” Baffled, Kaito blinked at his newly appointed knight.
Assassins? What the hell was he on about? Kudo Shinichi was a political prisoner they couldn’t afford to execute! Kaito didn’t expect him to actually do any defending, Kudo was just a glorified guard in his retinue.
...
Happy Christmas @glitchedcatto!

7 & 3 for the WIP Challenge!
Aaaaaaa~! Okay, so! Those two WIPs were written for ShinRan week that I never got to finish for some reason and so were left incomplete for whoever knows how long (it was a year ago, Aina) (shuddup, brain).
'Childhood' was just little Shinichi and Ran going to investigate the rumours at their school, similar to the episode where they first met Kaitou Kid (Touichi). Ran is trying to talk Shinichi out of going there, and he just refuses. Haha, lame isn't it? ^^;
'Vampire' would be Shinichi thinking that Ran is acting strangely and is trying to find out what's wrong with her. Ran is actually a vampire in this XD. ...I need my muse to come back so I can finish this already T-T
Sharing a little snippets from those two WIPs in the read more!
Childhood:
“I have a bad feeling about this, Shinichi…!” she exclaims but, upon seeing that Shinichi has ignored her again, she latches onto his arm, preventing him from walking any further.
“Wha-!”
“We’re not even supposed to sneak out at night! We’ll get in trouble, I’m sure!” Ran yells into his arm.
“We’re already in trouble!” he grumbles, trying to pull his arm out of Ran, to no avail. Her grip is amazingly strong. “They’ve no doubt noticed our absences by now. Why not just use the time to check out the rumours while we’re at it?”
“Then we can go again earlier tomorrow! I just don’t want to go tonight!”
“Well, I don’t think our parents will let us go after tonight, so this is our only chance!” Shinichi pats at Ran’s arm with his free hand repeatedly, urging her to let him go. “Why did you even tag along anyway?”
She doesn’t reply, just clings onto his arm even tighter, if that is even possible. He pauses, feeling her body tremble.
He opens his mouth, hesitates, closes his mouth. Then it opens again. “H-hey, Ran—?”
“Shi-Shinichi…” Ran whispers so softly, so full of fear that makes Shinichi just freeze, and look down at her. “Let’s go home, okay? Please?”
Vampire:
He raises his upper body off the grass by his arms, groaning as he does so. “Thanks, Ran. I owe you one.” Taking the water bottle from Ran, he raises it to his lips and chugs it greedily.
Hmm! Sweet, sweet relief! He’ll never take cold water for granted ever again!
He doesn’t notice Ran staring at the water droplets slipping past his lips, dripping down his throat. But he does hear Ran make a small noise in the back of her throat. She sounds weird, like she’s holding something back.
“Hmm?” Opening his eyes, he dips down his head, letting go of the water bottle and wiping at his mouth with his hand before glancing at Ran, who is staring back at him with a strange look in her eyes. “What’s wrong, Ran?”
Her eyes snap up to his eyes so fast that he would have missed it if he had blinked.
He actually blinks this time in a bit of a shock, staring at her. Is it him, or did the colours in Ran’s eyes change for a moment? It is too quick to ascertain the colours, but he thinks they may be red.
Red as blood...
Before he can ask her about it, Ran dips her head down, her bangs hiding her eyes. She opens her mouth, but hesitates before closing it. And then opens and then closes again. And opens again before clenching her teeth together a little.
Shinichi knows that Ran has something to say but has a little trouble saying what is on her mind, so he waits. Even as his throat dries up and his body feels a bit disgusting, what with his sweats making his clothes stick to his skin and all, he still waits patiently. There’s nothing more important than hearing what Ran wants to say to him.
Ran then takes a deep breath before slowly letting it out, her hands clutching onto the rims of her skirt. “Shinichi.”
He hums. “Yeah?”
“Do you trust me?”
“Yes,” he replies with no hesitation. Ran looks a little tense, so he gives a cheeky grin, “Well, except for your sense of directions. You can’t go anywhere without help, anyways.”
Ran chuckles a little. “I do directions just fine on my own, idiot,” she says, her tense shoulders loosening a little.
Success!
“I’ll believe that when I see it.”
“Idiot.”
She takes one more deep breath before saying, “Then can you please stay still for a bit?”

Glad you enjoyed that post! now here's a question for you :)
Do you have a Favorite Kid Heist? if so which one?
Bonus Question: Conan has to team up with someone of your choice during a kid Heist, Who are you picking and Why?
- 💚
Hi my beloved nonnie! I'm slowly working up to answering all of the asks I have in my inbox, I'm so sorry if it takes me a while to respond. (^^;)
Ahh! I have so many favorite KID heists... I'll list off my top three because I cannot choose for the life of me! Few of them are farther along in the series so I hope I'm not spoiling anything for you.
(I'm going to mention one that's up to the 700 mark in the anime, don't read it if you think it'll spoil anything! ❤)
1. Kaitou KID's Miraculous Midar Walk (EP: 356)
I genuinely ADORE this heist for like. Zero reason at all. It's so enjoyable to me! I love seeing Shinichi become so absorbed in the little trick and entertained; he's just like a child sometimes!Kaito's little strut he does in the air makes him look so much cooler than he really is lmao
2. Kirin's Horn That Vanished into The Dark (EP: 585-587)
This heist was SO entertaining! We've got KID dressing up as Nakamori, the tazer surprise for Conan and all of the Haibara + Conan's playful bickering and the way the two tried to work together! I also REALLY enjoyed how Haibara tries to use the observation skills Shinichi portrays to try and deduct herself... cute!
3. Kaito KID VS Makoto Kyogoku (EP: 746-747)
I love this one just for the PURE shenanigans that ensue over Sonoko and her huge himbo of a BF. Kaito is literally there to fuel the fire and leave??? Sonoko deciding that she gets to choose her lover and make her own decisions and not her family is super girlboss of her!!! I love her so much! Also: Wing-man Kaito! (Kinda... lol)
I've practically let this ask boil in my inbox and I apologize! I'd really love to hear your favorite KID heist(s)! Thank you so much for the question, I'm very fond of them! 💓

The Mid Air Walk and Jet Black Mystery Train are some of my favorite arcs too! Bust my absolute favorite has to be the 2.5 special, Dual Mystery on a Full Moon Night. The Black Org, Haibara, and Hattori all in one episode, this one has it all! Plus the reveal of Jodie and the FBI was fun. But enough about me, it's time for your next Secret Santa message: Please, tell me, who is your favorite character and why are they so awesome?
-Your Secret Santa
Aaah, yes, that is a fantastic arc! I remember the first time I read it - I was on the edge of my seat the whole time. :)
Sorry for taking so long to get back to you, Santa, but the answer to your question kind of got away from me. Short version: Kuroba Kaito is a flash bastard and I love him.
For the longer version (aka a love letter to Kuroba Kaito), please read on!
I adore characters who are VERY good at what they do, which is something that DCMK spoils me for in general. Kaito fulfills this to the nth degree for me, thanks to his many diverse talents. Magician, thief, acrobat, actor, makeup expert, marksman, genius, the list goes on.
In DC, he's seen from the perspective of Conan and other characters who see him as a showman, eternally showing off (and showing them up) with impeccable flair. I'll never not love his Midair Walk, and the shock that I felt right alongside Conan as I tried to figure out HOW in the hell KID had managed it. I love being an audience member for the Kaitou KID show, to get to enjoy that moment of 'oh my god, he has so much style' and then also get to see Conan unravel the details for us afterwards. In MK, that showman flair is still very present, but we also get to experience the effort and struggles Kaito contends with to be able to pull off his daring heists. Much as I love seeing everything go exactly as planned (with some space for necessary improvisation along the way), seeing the hard work that goes on behind the scenes is wonderfully satisfying and makes me even more impressed by Kaito's talent. Watching Kaito be clever and talented enough to come out on top, despite all the odds in his way, is truly delightful.
I also might have a type, and that type is quippy, intelligent acrobats (why yes, Spiderman and Nightwing are my two favourite superheroes, how did you guess?). There was no way I was not going to fall for Kaito.
Tumblr media
Beyond his impressive skill set, I am endlessly fascinated by Kaito's versatility and flexibility as a character, both in the realm of his disguise/acting abilities and in him as a person. He's funny and charming and clever, but also dorky and lonely and more than a little crazy.
He's the practical joker who pulls crazy stunts to make someone else smile. He's the bored genius who revels in the opportunity to face challenges that are actually challenging. He's the gentleman thief who's always at least two steps ahead of his pursuers. He's the master of disguise who could be literally anyone because both his acting and makeup skills are just that OP. He's the consummate liar who enjoys talking circles around people but sometimes just desperately wants someone to confide in about what his life is actually like.
I love that Kaito's all of these things and that he can be self-contradictory (as we all are) without feeling unnatural with it. Even though canon usually limits us to seeing one or two of the aspects of his personality at a time, it's clear that they're all still there under the surface, impacting his actions and decisions.
I can't talk about why I love Kaito without also talking about his relationship with Conan/Shinichi. It is fantastic to watch the way he and Conan balance each other: they each recognize their equal in the other, and thoroughly enjoy squaring off against each other as a result. They also make a great team, when they do end up on the same side. Similarly, Kaito's obvious pride in Conan when he figures things out (even Kaito's own tricks) is so adorable.
Tumblr media
They both carry so many secrets and I feel like it gives them a sense of kinship to know that, despite everything, there's another person out there who faces similar struggles and who, just maybe, can accept them for who they really are, mysteries and secret identities and intelligence and all. There’s a trust there that I can’t get enough of.
Tying onto that, one thing I particularly love about KID is that he's not actually a villain, even when he's acting in opposition to Conan and the police. He's a challenge and an opponent and a rival, but he's too fundamentally good to ever qualify as a villain imo (custom KID hannin silhouette notwithstanding).
Tumblr media
Kaito is the guy who actively puts himself at risk to help others, like 'stealing' the clock tower, or saving Lupin the dog, or protecting Jody Hopper from Snake, or watching out for the shounen tantei in the Kichiemon house. And don't even get me started on the number of times he's saved Conan from certain death by falling off various high things. He is one of the kindest people in this series, imo, but he hides it so well that most people don't notice. Unlooked for kindness makes me soft, especially from a character who is technically filling the role of a criminal.
Another aspect of Kaito's personality that I personally find fascinating is his relationship with gender. He's equally as comfortable and confident in any disguise and, while that could be ascribed to his skills as an actor, I don't know many teenage boys who would be that nonchalant about presenting themselves according to such diverse gender expectations. For example, I love how Conan harasses Kaito about his tendency to wear female disguises in the Iron Tanuki case and it doesn't bother Kaito in the slightest (’it's cuter that way’ is also the most amazing response). I also enjoy watching him use disguise-appropriate flirtation techniques on his targets with no apparent discomfort about switching from one collection of gender norms to another.
Also A Study in Scarlette has firmly convinced me that Kaito wears lacy underthings simply because he likes them, which is a head canon hill I will die on.
Tumblr media
And on THAT bombshell, I'm going to stop talking before I actually turn this into an essay. Orz
TL;DR: Kaito is a flashy, kind-hearted chaos gremlin and I adore him.

Regarding a Common Misconception of Hakuba Saguru
Lately I've been doing some reflecting on Saguru & the various ways I've seen him portrayed, as well as the ways I've portrayed him in the past. And then I was rereading some MK manga, and had some realizations. I've been feeling like rambling about them! So here I go, rambling.
[Disclaimer: I'm not personally taking issue with anyone's interpretation or impression of Saguru - just sharing my own impressions! This is just for fun <3 ]
Misconception: Saguru is constantly accusing Kaito of being KID
It’s a generally accepted fact in a lot of fics I’ve read (and honestly, maybe some fics I’ve written -- I used to hold this belief too!) that Saguru just unendingly insinuates that Kaito is KID--alone, in front of other people, always.
I won’t cite any here, but I’ve seen nods in fanwork to Aoko feeling a little stressed/frustrated about the fact that Saguru thinks Kaito is KID and makes it known. I’ve also seen fanwork where Saguru explicitly calls Kaito KID, presses Kaito for information, or otherwise makes his beliefs clear, even when others are around.
There are only five scenes in the Magic Kaito manga where Saguru makes direct indication toward his knowledge of KID’s identity.
First, of course, we’ve got chapter 17 - the first chapter where Saguru puts together that Kaito is KID.
For a long time, when I’d consumed more fic than MK canon, I recall an image born in my head of Saguru singling Kaito out in class and making the claim that Kaito is KID in front of everybody. I don’t know if I ever read any such allusion in a fic, or if it’s just an assumption I drew based on portrayals I read, but imagine my surprise when he does nothing of the sort.
Now, to be fair, Saguru is A LOT in this chapter. MK is still heavily in gag manga territory, so his behavior is extra extra played up. But if we take away the visuals, the dialogue between Saguru and Kaito can be summed up thusly:
[First scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]
Kaito: You look so tired. Haven’t gotten enough sleep after chasing KID for three nights In a row, huh?
Saguru: Hmph. Aren’t you tired as well?
And then, a few beats later in the conversation:
Saguru: I’d like to invite you to the Ochima Art Museum tonight, where KID’s declared his next target. Kaito: Eh? Saguru: Then, you’ll understand why I’m so tired. Or, do you have other plans tonight? Kaito: Okay, I accept your invitation. It’ll be great to see your work in action!
And that’s it, that’s the big class confrontation. Aoko is present for it, but she’s more interested in joining in on the fun, and while I do think Aoko pieces together that Kaito is KID, she prefers to live in willful ignorance of it until it becomes impossible for her to ignore. She’s bright enough to pick up what Saguru’s implying, but because he never brings it past implication, there’s no reason for her to look at it too hard. Anyway, I digress. That’s conjecture and headcanon talking. My point is that Saguru never makes any explicit claims, just invites Kaito along to the heist.
Another neat thing about this scene is that--while certainly not motivated by mercy in this case, Saguru does give Kaito an out: “Or, do you have an excuse not to go tonight?” Of course, if Kaito took it, it would be rather damning, but I do think it would have been enough confirmation for Saguru. I don’t think there would have been any arm-twisting to get Kaito to agree.
But Kaito and Saguru are competitive bastards, so here we are.
Let’s move on to the heist!
Once again, the manga certainly plays up the whole ordeal. Saguru is intense and waiting for his moment, and Kaito’s being, well, Kaito.
At the heist, there are a few points where Saguru has opportunities to make allusions to Kaito being KID in a way others would pick up on, or otherwise make his suspicions known, but he doesn’t.
First of all, is this exchange:
Nakamori: Why are you guys here? Aoko: Hakuba-kun invited us! Nakamori: What’s the meaning of this, Hakuba-kun? Saguru: I thought she might like to see if KID is arrested tonight. Nakamori: You’ll fail if you’re too cocky! Saguru: We’re well-prepared. Besides, who knows… KID may already be here.
Saguru does imply KID could be present, but he makes no indication that he means Kaito. His next opportunity to hint at Kaito being KID or otherwise make accusations is when Nakamori asks him to consult as a magician.
Nakamori: Kaito, since you’re here, do you want to use your magic against KID? Kaito: [laughing sheepishly] Saguru: Oh, I want to see that fight, too. If you really can do it.
Needling, yes. Saguru knows what he’s saying and so does Kaito. Accusations, no. This is well within the realm of something Saguru would have said even if he didn’t suspect Kaito, considering their dynamic up until this point.
And then, the most explicit Saguru ever gets in terms of literally calling Kaito out as being KID, beginning when Kaito excuses himself to go to the bathroom right before the heist:
[Second scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]
Saguru: [handcuffs himself to Kaito] Kaito: Huh? Saguru: I won’t let you do that, Kuroba. Kaito: What do you think you’re doing?! Saguru: I got the report back from the lab. The hair I got from KID indicated that he’s a high school student. After I compared KID’s data with other high school students’ data in the database… Kuroba Kaito came up in the final list. Kaito: That’s a coincidence. Saguru: Really? We’ll see soon enough. Let’s wait until the time KID is stated to come. [Some heist hubbub occurs as officers get into position even though KID hasn’t arrived at the heist time] Aoko: What? KID’s not coming? Saguru: Ha! It looks like I win! You’d better confess who you really are.
And from there, of course, ‘KID’ (Akako in disguise) swoops in and takes care of the heist. That more or less wraps up chapter 17, the first chapter where Saguru understands that Kaito is KID. And I would argue this is the most aggressive Saguru ever is. In fact, rather than persist in trying to accuse/capture/implicate Kaito as KID, he straight up vanishes from the narrative for several chapters.
Saguru doesn’t show up again until the Chat Noir heist, in chapter 25, when he calls from France.
It’s also important to note that at this point, Magic Kaito’s narrative has experienced a slight tonal shift. At the very least, while still often comedic, it reads less like a gag manga. Between the last time we saw Saguru and now, we’ve learned the apparent motivation behind Toichi’s murder, we’ve met Snake (an albeit rather incompetent villain) and Kaito has faced down gunfire and the danger posed by Snake and his men.
The way Saguru is portrayed has also shifted to reflect the shift too. Instead of a hulking antagonist-like character in a Holmes cosplay, he’s dressed primly and presents more as a cheeky but polite character. He’s also more effectively emulating the charm that the story tried to imply he had early on (“Hakuba Saguru, at your service!”, the girls in class fawning over him, the newspaper calling him out as a famous detective making a long-awaited return to Japan).
The interaction is entirely less antagonistic, too. For reference, I’ll paste the exchange (sans Saguru’s massive info dump) below.
[Third scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]
[At the heist for the golden eye] Kaito: [Hiding in a bathroom stall while putting on a disguise] [His phone starts ringing] Hello…? Saguru: Hi, it’s been a while. Are you still alive? Kaito: [Thinking] This sugary yet obnoxious tone of voice is... Hakuba?! Saguru: You’ve made quite the stir in Paris. They’re all talking about how France’s Chat Noir is going to go up against you in Japan. Kaito: Idiot! It’s not me. It’s Kaitou KID! Saguru: Ha… it doesn’t really matter. I’ll share some information that I gathered over here. [Info dump cut from dialogue] Well! That’s about all I have to say. Do your best. I don’t want to see you lose to anyone until I capture you myself. Kaito: Like I’ve been saying, I’m not KID! Saguru: Oops, it’s almost time for the Paris Fashion Week. See you! Kaito: H-hey…
The only part of this conversation that I could consider to fall into the territory of antagonistic is when Saguru says “I don’t want to see you lose to anyone until I capture you myself.” And more than anything, I think this is less reflective of a real desire to capture Kaito, and more reflective of his competitive nature. Not to mention, within the context of the conversation, it feels much more like teasing than anything.
Saguru’s motivation for making the call is clear: He doesn’t want Kaito to lose, and he wants to help ensure Kaito’s success.
And most interestingly (although I’d like to see the raw manga to confirm this, or otherwise a more literal translation) he never explicitly calls Kaito KID either. Outside of alluding to KID’s actions, Saguru doesn’t explicitly say Kaito is KID or mention KID at all. It’s Kaito who does that.
When Kaito points out that he is not, in fact, KID, Saguru doesn’t argue. He simply brushes off the denial and shares the information he’s collected.
So, to summarize what we’ve covered so far: after Saguru failed to arrest Kaito during chapter 17, he stopped troubling Kaito so thoroughly that the next time he features in the story isn’t until he’s calling from overseas to try to lend Kaito some helpful information. He’s not even playing a part in trying to capture this thief he allegedly wants to catch.
And then, Saguru dips back out of the narrative, although for a shorter period this time. The next arc he appears in is a few chapters later--the Nightmare Heist which he arrives in the middle of. But, there’s not any interaction between him and Kaito, nor any allusions made by Saguru about KID’s identity, so we’ll move on.
The fourth time Saguru makes any indication that Kaito is KID is during the Corbeau arc, when KID is being challenged by a clad-in-black KID lookalike.
Before jumping into that specific scene, though, there’s another interaction I’d like to call attention to--between Saguru and Nakamori. Not because of something Saguru says, but because of what he doesn’t say.
Nakamori: Hahaha! Looks like you let your guard down because you thought I was at home with a cold! Saguru: Our plan succeeded, it seems. Nakamori: But I only told Aoko I had a cold, so how does KID know…? Saguru: Hm...
If Saguru were wanting to make some kind of accusation, even a non-explicit one, he would have made some remark. Instead, he doesn’t say anything at all, which continues to speak to the fact that he isn’t really interested in implicating Kaito.
Anyway, the next time Saguru makes any sort of implication that Kaito is KID he is, once again, trying to help. Last time it was over the phone, so the conversation was private. This time, the conversation is in a classroom, although based on the panels, it seems like Saguru and Kaito are alone at the beginning--or at least, no attention is being paid to them.
[Fourth scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]
Kaito: [Talking to himself] It must be the case, there’s no other way. There must have been some trick with the case.
Saguru: [Eavesdropping, apparently alone in the room with him] The case didn’t contain any hidden mechanisms. Kaito: Eh? Saguru: No hidden doors or things like that, as are often used in magic tricks. Kaito: W-what on earth are you talking about? Saguru: A new notice from Corbeau arrived this morning. ‘I’ll come and take the real Midnight Crow tonight.’ My name is Hakuba--so I don’t want a ‘white’ person to lose to some ominous black crow. [From here, Akako and then Aoko jump into the conversation.]
Surely a classroom is a risky place to have a conversation about KID, but the nice thing is that Saguru--once again--doesn’t bring up KID at all beyond saying that he doesn’t want the ‘white[-clad] person’ to lose to the black crow. From the outside looking in, all he’s doing is sharing information about the case with Kaito. It may also seem unwarranted from that perspective, but not at all implicating.
Also, another thing I’d like to call attention to is that when Akako joins the conversation (and seemingly blindsides Saguru, as if he wasn’t expecting anyone else to join), Saguru stops talking. He continues to be quiet when Aoko chimes in, and he doesn’t have any relevant dialogue for the rest of the scene.
Once again, Saguru’s clearly motivated to share information in the interest of helping Kaito. He has to share with Kaito’s civilian identity, since he can’t exactly arrange a conversation with KID, and this is likely the easiest way for him to do it. He makes no accusations, and this time he doesn’t even imply he wants KID caught.
So--Saguru is a part of the narrative again, but since rejoining the narrative he seems less interested in actually catching KID and far more interested in helping Kaito. And no accusations or incriminating allusions have been made since chapter 17, before Saguru’s first hiatus from the story.
The final time Saguru nods to Kaito being KID is from the Sun Halo arc. This is probably the interaction that’s closest to what fanon tends to depict when it comes to Saguru making subtle accusations that Kaito is KID. And even then, I tend to take this arc with a grain of salt if only because it felt less like Gosho was trying to add to the story and more like he was just trying to make a Magic Kaito addition that hit various fan expectations while still being wildly disappointing, lmao.
[Fifth scene where Saguru makes direct indications as to KID’s identity]
Saguru: [approaching and commenting on Kaito’s motorcycle] I see, a Suzuki GSX 250R. Akako: Ah, Hakuba-kun… Saguru: You’ve shown me something interesting. Perhaps this might help the police tonight. And could it be that you’ve forgotten… that the only motorised bikes we’re allowed to ride to school are scooters? Kaito: Eh?! For real?!
Once again, Saguru doesn’t explicitly mention KID at all--and segues from his mention of the police to pointing out that Kaito is breaking the rules right now, actually, which helps blend this teasing comment into the conversation.
Yes, later in the chapter Saguru does show up with a team of motorcycle experts. But that also means there’s more disguise opportunities for KID and more factors to account for, thus complicating things for, well, everyone--not just KID.
Also, I tend to dismiss that as Gosho throwing in some comedy, and as less to do with Saguru’s character. Call it cherrypicking if you like :P
To recount--there are five times where Saguru implies Kaito is KID.
The first two are in chapter 17, when Saguru first puts it together, and it is during this chapter that he gets the most explicit about calling Kaito out as KID, as well as the most aggressively he behaves about it. And he backs off so hard after that doesn’t work, that we don’t see him for several chapters.
The next two times he implies Kaito is KID are both in order to help him. No aggression or accusations, just the sharing of information. Even when teasing or suggesting he’s interested in catching KID, he’s good-natured about it, and when he realizes there are potentially people witnessing the conversation, he stops participating.
The final time he implies Kaito is KID is a tiny comment about finding something Kaito has shown him ‘interesting’ and ‘helpful for the police’ before smoothing into gently teasing Kaito for bringing an illegal vehicle to school.
In conclusion, Saguru may start off apparently aggressive in part thanks to early Magic Kaito’s overall tone, but rather than persevering in trying to catch Kaito after cornering him in chapter 17, he actually seems to back off. Once he’s playing a part in the narrative again, when he interacts with Kaito it’s almost exclusively to help him. Yes, he is on the task force and participating at heists, but where it matters, he’s less interested in catching the thief and far more interested in those the thief is opposing (excluding the police force).

A Detective’s new groove  (or Conan finally gets clothes for his ghost form)
Again I got a lot of ideas for future events and hey by doing this I have an easier time writing the ‘first night’ I’m almost at the kidnapping case in my writing so at worst its going to be released a week from now, baring life issues. This is about ~5ish months in not sure yet on the timeline all I know is that it’s before Team Detective(Shinichi/Conan, Ran, Agasa, and Ai as the core group with the detective boys, and Heiji on the peripheries) and meets Team Phantom (which is going to be planned for during ‘Realty Trip’ after all that concert was broadcast worldwide if I remember right and well that is the first proof Shinichi has that he isn’t alone... Plus Freakshow is right up Shinichi’s alley) but after they met Haibara Ai
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ran blinks as she recovers from the bright light blue flash that marks her Best Friend/boyfriend’s age shift... maybe she should have knocked first as she looks at a seven year old Shinichi/Conan who looks like he is recovering from a heart attack and trying to hurriedly put on his glasses.
“Ran please knock before you walk into the room!” Conan yells “You nearly gave me a heart attack, I thought Oji-san had come home early! Do you have any idea how bad it would be for him to find out I’m Shinichi!”
“I don’t think Otou-san knowing would be that bad... he honestly can’t be worse then Hattori-san. Seriously does he even realize how much in danger he's putting you both in. We made the alias of Edogawa Conan for a reason!” Ran rants her honest frustration coming out with every word, Ran pauses and looks at Conan, “Um, Why did you age-shift in the first place? Don’t you normally try to avoid doing so as much as possible?”
Conan blushes, “I wanted to reach Oji-san’s case files without flying. I may be used to my powers now, but sometimes I really don’t feel like using them much. Also if Oji-san find out I’m Shinichi he will likely kick me out! I don’t want to go back to my stupid Mansion!” Conan sticks out his tongue in pure disgust, and not for the first time Ran picks up Shinichi’s more child-like tendencies when he's age-shifted.
It’s really interesting that he never notices himself and to be honest its those same tendencies that helps her keep the names straight, so she isn’t going to argue with them.
Ran startles as she suddenly remembers why she came in to see him in the first place. “Right, Conan I came in to tell you that Sonoko is having a costume party this next weekend, and though you can’t go as Shinichi. I already asked Sonoko if I can bring you as Conan along and she agreed. I bought a few costumes you can choose from for it as well... I hope we don’t end with a murder again.”
Conan gives a slight glare and mumbles, “we don’t run into murders all the time.” As he walks toward the table in the next room over with the five bags of costumes on it.
The first bag Conan reaches into to take out the costume inside contains a cheap superman costume which gets a maybe if their is nothing else better. The second contains a crappy Vampire costume that gets rejected outright.
The third gets Ran a glare as Conan pulls out a mini Kaitou KID outfit. This costume doesn’t just get rejected, it gets kicked into the trash as Ran just about dies laughing at Conan’s face. The fourth is not much better as its a puppy costume so that gets trashed as well.
The last bag and the last costume choice was different from the others. Its grayscale with mostly lighter grays, the cloth its made of is stretchy, and the whole costume is very reminiscent of the classic outfit worn by Sherlock Holmes. Its extremely well made and Conan face literally lights up at the sight of it as his eyes start glowing brightly.
“Ran, Ran! It’s perfect I’m putting it on right now!” Conan excitedly says looking all the world like the seven year old he appears to be as he literally starts changing in the middle of the room. Ran was about to stop him but is frozen when arcs of white light crackle across his skin. Something ghostly is going on with her friend and by this time she’s learned its better to let nature run its course.
Conan quickly changes out of his casual clothes and into the Sherlock costume. Its one size to big but Conan doesn’t seem to care or notice, as he is grinning so wide that If Ran didn’t know he was only part human she would be afraid he would injure himself.
The arcing white light seems to touch every part of the costume changing it with every touch It inverts the colors and changes the fit so its perfect. When it touches his hair where it pokes out under the hat it turns the hair white. The white light builds and builds and before both of them know it Conan is forced completely into his ghost form in an involuntary transformation, but unlike the many times before Conan has clothes on. The costume Ran just bought has had the colors inverted and made to fit Conan perfectly.
“Ran? what just happened? why am I a ghost? I don’t remember changing.” Conan asks confused as he looks down on himself and his new outfit. He really does look like a mini-detective with that outfit on.
“I think we finally figured out how to put clothes on your ghost form. Other then that I’m not sure” Ran says as Conan tilts his head with curiosity, “What ever just happened is likely a ghost thing we can’t explain right now, though.”
“Wait, do you really think they will stick?” Conan asks as he summons the transformation ring to turn himself back into a human.
As the transformation rolls over Conan, Ran snorts. “I do believe so given that now it seems the naked one is your human form.” Ran states as the Rings leave Conan standing only in his underwear
“Eep,” Conan squeaks out before grabbing his clothes and rushing to put them on. Once he has clothes on again he asks, “Do you think you can get another one by the costume party, I really like that outfit.”
“Mabye, if you behave and get the two costume out of the trash so I can get a return on them.” Ran says and as Conan scrambles to recover the thrown away costume, Ran can’t help but sigh.
Just another day as the best friend of an age-changing, Yūrei Hanyou, detective, that moonlights as a seven year old after all
[12:51 AM]
if there was one person who could understand neito well, itsuka kendou would say it would be you.
you have known neito monoma ever since you were children, maybe much more than anyone would, even if they were his new friends. no matter how much they knew him, it would always be you who knew him better, the best.
it was not because you were his childhood bestfriend, or sweetheart, or any of that sappy story seen in disney movies or romance novels. your and neito’s story is far too easy to understand than any of those for it can be summarized by the word “archenemy,” like perry the platypus to doofenshmirtz, or joker to batman, or maybe even conan to kaitou kid—yes, you were kind of addicted to that show for quite some time.
along with being neito’s archenemy comes with knowing full well what ticks him off and also what makes him feel pleased. basically, that knowledge became the reason why everyone knows you’re the one who has the better hand when it comes to neito in general.
so when did you two first treat each other like archenemies?
it started when you two were still in kindergarten, was it? you’ve known each other for so long that it still surprises you how you and neito still see and even talk to one another. you could barely remember how and when exactly the scene played about at that time, but there were bits of memories where it was him who started to get on your bad side. although on neito’s defense, it was actually you when you started commenting on his hairstyle back in the days. after all, he used to sport a straight cut of bangs back then and it was the very thing that got stuck in your mind and couldn’t help but let it out every single time you see neito’s face, no matter how much he had physically changed from the boy you used to know.
being neito’s archenemy consists of constant teases, banters, glares, smirks, and being scolded by someone—usually a teacher or a mutual friend of yours, which is kendou, since tetsutetsu joins into the arguments too, which leaves kendou to babysit the four of you.
it’s not as if you were always arguing or at each other’s throats though. people even say you two make a good team, but it will only lead to neito and you teasing each other on how the other is flustered by such a statement. you do admit that there is a wave of relief that washes over your chest whenever you hear those words, but you could never find yourself letting out that kind of confession especially since it would wound your pride, and boost someone’s ego—ehem, neito. you have no specific reason why it calms you down to have someone say those about you two, but it may be because it thrills you to have someone else tease neito, however it also gives way for him to tease you as well, so you have rather conflicting thoughts when it comes to that matter.
by the time neito and you had reached high school though, you knew something changed.
was it how the glares started softening a bit? was it when the bickers would shorten whenever one of you decides to give in to the other? people commented on how you two became more mature, but for some reason, you knew there was another reason why this came to be, something you dare not say nor even think about, not that it should matter anyway.
the knocking on the door startled you awake from your thoughts, suddenly urging you to stand from the sofa to answer whoever was on the right mind to knock on your apartment at half past 12, or wait is it 1 AM already? either way, it’s too late for anyone to try and visit you, unless it’s someone who has bad intentions, but would they really knock if they have? still, there’s nothing wrong to be cautious, especially during these days.
“neito?” the rush of words came out of your lips sooner than you had the time to shut yourself, it was also louder than intended that’s why the other person on the other side of the door was able to hear it loud and clear.
“(y/n)! you’re there, right? could you let me in? it’s freezing out here!”
“and why would i?” you retort back, already gripping on the knob to turn it and reveal neito’s figure right in front of you. “what the hell are you doing here? at this hour even?”
and yet, he ignored you, entering your complex, then pushing you aside as he enjoyed the warmth that your apartment provided, with you closing the door behind in order to give him a long, contemplating look.
he seemed like he came from somewhere else, considering that the way he dresses up for home and for outside activity were different and quite unique by themselves. you noticed it after a few times of seeing him stay by your apartment with your other friends, or when you all go out to shop, have a meal, or stop by some place itsuka had found. you two were always on the same friendship circle, you noticed, yet it had never occurred where you and him stayed in one place all alone, after all you two were considered as “archenemies” still, aren’t you?
“i’m asking you what you’re doing here, monoma.” you bluntly questioned, making sure to emphasize how you’ve said his name. whenever you call him by his surname, he and you both know that you were pissed—or coming to. and like any other time, he chose to make a comeback as well, just as you had expected.
“it’s freezing outside, (y/n), do you want me to die? come on, be a kind person for once.”
“i am a kind person, monoma, but as far as i know, you don’t usually barge into people’s homes at around 1 AM.”
he scoffs, still rubbing his gloved hands together, trying to warm them up from the temperature winter brought upon december. “it’s just 12:51, and you’re not just any people. aren’t we friends?”
it was your turn to scoff, bringing your grasps on your waist, leaning to the side as you raise your brows in utter disbelief. “friends? no we’re not, what are you talking about.”
it was the truth, anyway. even though you’ve treated him as an archenemy, throughout the years, you were friends with neito, it just so happens that you treat each other quite differently than most friends do, that’s why you chose to name it as a word that others don’t frequently use. who calls their friends an archenemy? probably only you, or some others too—maybe.
“hey (y/n), do you have any snacks, ramen perhaps?”
your eyes narrow at the sight of neito rummaging through your kitchen, already knowing his way around. how can you blame him when he had already visited the apartment a couple of times with itsuka, tetsutetsu, and a few other friends that you’ve had over the years.
sighing to yourself, you leaned to one of the counters as you watched him, now cooking not just a pack, but two packs of ramen—that was, mind you, yours. each and every equipment and whatever he was using was yours, and it should infuriate you, your mind tells you so. however, you just seemingly can’t.
“you should pay for those, including my gas, neito.” you muse to the boy, his back turned to you as he continued preparing the ramen that he was preparing for the both of you, the sight apparently engraving itself on your mind whenever you have the chance to look at your kitchen. what can you say? he looks good while doing stuff like these, and you wouldn’t mind having to see him do so next time, that’s if you would have the chance since you would bite your tongue before you could even confess about it.
“you know, i’m this close to thinking that you really hate me, (y/n).”
your brow raised, momentarily catching his eyes when he briefly glanced at you. “why’s that?”
“well for one, you’re treating me as some kind of enemy of some sort. we should be allies, you know.”
“yeah but you’re the one who always starts the argument first, neito.”
he chuckles then, leaning to the side as he sends a look to you, one that is glinted with slight mock and amusement, like per usual. “that’s because you’re so easy to rile up. you always have these puffy cheeks and narrowed eyes when you do,” he gestures to his own face and he suddenly laughs, pointing at you with a spoon. “-yeah! just like that!” he hollers, making your brows furrow even more, now glaring daggers at him.
“shut up.”
neito kept on laughing to himself and he only stopped when it was time to turn the gas off and take the saucepan out of the casserole, bringing it swiftly to the table where he lay it on top of a pot rest. it was also him who rushed to get bowls and utensils for each of you, which led you to simply sit down by the table, feeling a little bit awkward at how he basically served you and did the table for you. if you didn’t zipped your lips tight, you would’ve said how much you’d like to get used to this kind of treatment from him.
“what are you waiting for? dig in! it’s not like i put poison in it.” he chimes, getting his own part of the ramen and eating them in almost an instant that you were quite sure he must have been starving when he got here.
“what were you doing out, anyway? were you on a date?” the words slipped your mind as you ate, your eyes glanced down to the food, finding it difficult to look at him in the eye after such a question.
“hm? what if i tell you i was?”
you forced yourself to let out a shrug, still not meeting his gaze that was surely on yours. “it’s not like i care.”
he scoffs and chuckles—which was it, you have got no clue—one of the rare times when you seem unable to read neito’s actions.
“you’re acting like you do though.” he mutters as his smirk reached his ears, patting the chopsticks to his lips as he tried to intimidate you.
it was silent for a couple more seconds before you decided to break it, meeting his eyes with one of an uncertain gaze, almost wanting to look away immediately.
“why are you acting like we’re suddenly close, is this how you are after a date?” you questioned, hiding your hesitation by taking a bite of your ramen, letting its warmth travel down to your chest and your stomach, in hopes of comforting you in some way.
“you must be misunderstanding me, (y/n).” this time, his face was looking dead serious, no more smirk and glints of mischief by his irises, as if he had a change of mind in an instant. “i wasn’t on a date. i am on a date.”
your breath faltered and your movements came to a halt, the chopsticks and your hand raised on a level that left it hanging by the air, just like how the atmosphere stilled the moment you heard the words coming out of neito’s lips.
“what?”
“i said, i am on a date.” he points to you with his own utensil, gesturing for both of you. “we are on a date.”
“uh-when did i-”
“and before you react, i’m just here to clarify that i already know you like me, that’s why you’re acting like this.”
your mouth opened to react and retaliate, but you only looked at him in disbelief, watching his nose crinkle up in delight, the corners of his eyes curling as he grins, his hair slightly swaying softly at the smallest signs of his movements.
now he might be damn right that you like him, but it’s not as if you’ve realized it that long. still, your voice didn’t let you fight him back because he seemed to be enjoying his own bubble—one that he was gladly sharing to you right now. you’ll have to clarify his statement from earlier soon, but not now perhaps. because now, he looks so pretty with that smile, and you’d rather be teased than having to rid of a sight like that.
