To preface, this is post is inspired by my experience watching arcane s2. I both enjoyed and disliked a lot about it, but this is not intended to be an analysis or review and will only contain the absolute vaugest of spoilers.
'That was not the story I wanted it to be' and 'That was not the story i thought it was going to be' are fair but subjective statements, and at the end of the day the story wasn't made with the goal of pleasing my specific tastes.
I generally agree with this sentiment, but something about it bugs me. Surely these expectations don't exist in a vaccum. They come from the primordial soup of me, the media in question, and everything I've ever heard about said media in question. Half the art of storytelling is manipulating, guiding, and playing with what your audience expects. So while the problem may well lie in my own tastes and biases, it could also just be a symptom of genuine lacking in or around the story.
I tried making some checklists to identify what was bugging me about it. (Bit of a longass ramble incoming)
Things outside the text itself that may have affected my expectations of the story:
If this work is in direct conversation with other media eg adaptations, continuations, sequels, prequels, same cinematic universe etc. Especially if I am very familiar with said media. Does it state its relationship to these media properties accurately?
The way the story marketed itself. Are the trailers and blurbs accurate to the tone, themes and genre of the show itself? Does it feel like its striving to be high art or something to watch over dinner?
Related to this is fandom and internet reputation of the story. Are the topics of conversation pushed to the forefront online reflective of their prominence in the story itself?
Do I have a bias regarding the persons or companies creating or distributing this work?
Do I have or lack life experiences that would make the story ressonate more / am I the target audience?
How familiar am I with the tropes and conventions of the relevant medium and genre?
Did I miss key details of storytelling due to outside factors (talking, noise, distraction, zoning out etc)
Things within the text that may have affected expectations:
Foreshadowing. Were things seemingly forshadowed only to not be followed up on? Did huge changes come seemingly out of nowhere? Is it artfully subtle or underwritten?
Exposition. Are they actually telling me (explicitly or otherwise) what I need to know in order to understand what is going on?
Consistency. Particularly with character writing. Are motivations, relationships, personality, morals etc established firmly? If so, than are changes and challenges to these given the time and reasoning required to be convincing?
Pacing. Were we given enough time to take stuff in before moving on? Was a lot of time spent on details and plotlines that ultimately ended up irrelevant while key parts of settup where restricted to a single blink-and-youll-miss-it moment? Do I find myself going "well I mean I don't exactly dissagree that we could end up here but I feel we missed a few steps along the way"?
Themes and genre. Does it follow through with and/or intentionally subvert tropes of the stories it is similar to? Does it have multiple themes and are they of equal importance? Do the pacing and foreshadowing correspondingly reflect that?
Clarity. Related to many of the above, but how many plates are spinning at once, and how many of them are we supossed to care about? On a less abstract level, can I see/hear/read what I need to in order to understand what is going on. In film ig it would be camera angles/lighting/blocking/sound design etc. Definitely elements of skill issue here but worth noting.
Im sure theres many more but
Sigh
Ig I gotta rewatch arcane to see how much of it was a skill issue on my end. Maybe this is the death of media literacy and my brainrotted ass needing to be spoonfed. Or maybe it was actually rushed, dropped key plotlines from the first season, and fastfowarded through character arcs at light speed.
#arcane critical#arcane s2 spoilers#this isnt even touching on my personal gripes with Intentional Plot Descisions TM or my adoration of some artistic choices#i firmly maintain that watching s1 was improved by being familiar with lol amd s2 was made worse by that same context#victor man. they really just made him malzahar. camille would have been such a cool paralell for him.#weirdly last peice of media that had me feeling like this was the barbie movie#audience expectations

Writer interview game
Thanks for tagging me @punderdome! I feel appreciated 🥰
A few no pressure tags @scaredyspooks @wandawillow @infernalrusalka ☺️
When did you start writing?
Pretty early as I started to draw and make up little stories to my drawings at, like, the age of 5, 6? #manga
Are there different themes or genres you enjoy reading than what you write?
Yes! I love to read non-fiction, as bizarre as it sounds (well, that‘s also my job), but I just love to dig into fields I was not interested or would never venture in only to find myself invested in the subject after reading about it.
Is there a writer you want to emulate or get compared to often?
There are so many writers I enjoy reading and they are all different and unique in their writing and storytelling that it made me realize I don‘t want to compare myself or be compared to anyone. I strive to be myself and want my writing to reflect that (though I have a long way to go…)
Can you tell me a bit about your writing space?
My office at work. It‘s dull and has literally no color or life, but it is the space I can write the best (also I have an ergonomic chair and a height-adjustable table, so no aching back hehe)
What's your most effective way to muster up a muse?
Muse? What’s a muse? I thrive on the danger called procrastination. When I procrastinate, I’m full of ideas and motivation to write or draw - just not to do the things I actually need to do.
Are there any recurring themes in your writing? Do they surprise you?
They don‘t surprise me anymore and I should dip my toes in other themes. I‘m a sucker for tragedy and making everyone suffer, so I started a story where I (hopefully will) write something happy and/or satisfying.
What is your reason for writing?
Honestly, I don‘t know. Too many thoughts for my head, they need to move so I write them down.
Is there any specific comment or type of comment you find particularly motivating?
I‘m a simple person, just like @punderdome I have a praise kink apparently lol
How do you want to be thought about by your readers?
Hm, I‘d say it would be nice if I come across as friendly and approachable… I guess? (Man, that‘s a tough question)
What do you feel is your greatest strength as a writer?
I’m gonna go with subtle foreshadowing and plottwists.
How do you feel about your own writing?
🤷🏼♀️🤔🫠 #if this conveys it #da ist noch Luft nach oben

If you have time to share, what would be your non-fic recs on storytelling, world-building, characters, and/or comic making? You come up with excitingly interesting characters, stories, and settings, that are quite well-thought and neatly organized while still having a natural feel to them. I understand that a lot of it comes from personal experience, reflection and sublimation, but I wanted to know if you have any "must read"s on this topic. I strive to make some of my stories make more sense and be less of a one minute attempt to scratch my issues. Thanks and have a good one.
Well, for making comics I would 100% recommend "Understanding Comics" and "Making Comics" by Scott McCloud. These are def a must read for comic creators, and explains a lot of the tools a comic maker has at their disposal to make a story. There is also The comics devices website which is a great help too.
As for how to actually write a story uhhhhhhh I've never read a non-fiction book on the topic lmao. A lot of how I've learn to write stories and characters is by consuming fiction and thinking about it (why does this work, why does it not, what are the themes the story is conveying to me, how are they doing it? Is the theme surface level or is it using metaphor and symbolism to get these things across etc etc) and talking with other writers about their thoughts and processes. A lot of what I write is figuring out WHY I like certain aspects of stories, and how I can incorporate that into my own in a new fun way.
Its a lot of trial and error, and a lot of frustration to try to make everything click into place (there are many story concepts that I've had that are often just dead in the water and don't go past that initial idea). As well, you can't be scared to change shit! Don't get too locked into one idea. If it's not working, if you're unsatisfied with how something is turning out, come at it from a different angle! Kill your darlings and all that. There's been TONS of stuff I cut from descon even in this short time that I've been developing it.

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth: A World Beyond Anger

https://planckstorytime.wordpress.com/
Hello! This is an essay analyzing the themes of FF7 Rebirth through a psychoanalytic lens, while also critiquing the execution of the game's writing. Moreover, it's a personal reflection on my journey with the game, and the complicated feelings that got tangled up with that. Please give it a read if you have the chance.
Previous articles: FF7: Reflections of a Traumatized Generation (2020)
I Need to Talk about Final Fantasy VII Remake or My Head Will Explode (2021)
Excerpt: “A confluence of worlds… and emotions. Loss, chief among them. It engulfs fleeting moments of joy, transforming them into rage, sadness, hatred.”
– Sephiroth, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (2024), speaking to me, specifically
*The following contains spoilers*
I. Memoirs of a Neurotic Fan
Hoo boy.
It’s been a long four years since Final Fantasy VII Remake (2020) released, and I don’t think I have ever before devoted so much emotional energy to deciphering how I truly feel about a piece of media. Initially, I enjoyed my return to a reimagined world of lovable characters, but unfavorable writing choices and a mind-boggling finale left me feeling torn. Despite striving to maintain an optimistic outlook at the end of my previous essay, my perspective on the game only darkened as the years wore on. Developer interviews constantly oscillated back and forth as to whether they would remain faithful to the original FF7 (1997), or, as the ending of Remake indicated, strike out on a brand new “unknown journey.” That’s not to mention the downright radioactive discourse among fans, combined with the litany of harassing messages I received for the most tepid criticisms.
Eventually, I grew to despise Remake. The positive emotions and ecstatic love I had for parts of the game sunk beneath my waves of ire toward its creative divergences – as well as what they represented to me. And I fed that hate. I hated its ponderous navel-gazing about the nature of adaptations. I hated its self-congratulatory insinuation that asinine story decisions like the Baby’s-First-Metacommentary” Whispers and the resurrection of multiple deceased characters somehow constituted “bold” storytelling. I hated the uncritical portion of certain audiences that fell for this illusion of transgressive storytelling, all the while embracing a game that went out of its way to barrage the player with fanservice and puerile pandering. I hated the frequent argumentation that “it’s not a remake, it’s a sequel” was somehow seen as a mitigating factor, when it actually further aggravated my problems with it. I hated Remake’s emphasis on novelty, its subversion without meaning, its arrogant alienation of new audiences that wanted to experience a classic story, and its implicitly cynical view on thousands of years of storytelling tradition for the sake of “surprise.” To quote director Naoki Hamaguchi:
“When you try to remake a game and make it an entertaining game, having the exact storyline as the original would lack the excitement and surprise. I was looking for an essence to add to the story, and Zack was chosen to be this essence because in the original, there wasn’t much story about Zack, but in Crisis Core, he had a huge character development.”
But that lonely ember of hope persisted; after all, I had loved Remake at one point. I hated that stubborn attachment most of all. By the time Rebirth was fully unveiled, I wanted only one thing from it: to repulse me to my core, to be something so egregiously offensive to my sensibilities that I could never associate the project with anything positive again. “Perhaps if things get stupid enough,” I thought, “others will also see the emperor’s nakedness.” Pain and despair morphed into objects of desire for me. They were my keys to escaping these contradictory feelings of love and hate.
As you can see, I am quite well-adjusted and able to engage with art in a healthy way.

This song, A Walk in the Park Freestyle, delivers a deep introspection of ambition, resilience, and self-awareness, woven with raw emotion and unfiltered storytelling. The lyrics paint a picture of a determined artist navigating the trials of life and the music industry, highlighting themes of perseverance, sacrifice, and individuality. The protagonist strives to maintain authenticity amidst the chaos of fame and the cutthroat nature of competition. With references to personal struggles, dreams of success, and moments of doubt, the song reveals the duality of strength and vulnerability.
The opening lines set the tone of relentless pursuit, describing a journey filled with obstacles yet propelled by an unyielding drive. The artist addresses the void they face, using creativity as a bridge to overcome challenges and stay grounded. Throughout, the lyrics explore the societal pressures of fame, with a sharp critique of superficiality, while embracing a steadfast belief in their purpose and identity.
As the verses progress, the song touches on the burdens of representation and the generational weight the artist feels compelled to carry. There is a striking balance between personal reflection and universal truths, making the narrative relatable while still deeply personal. Lines about rejection and resilience resonate, creating a profound connection with anyone striving for greatness in the face of adversity.
The climax of the song shifts toward an affirmation of self-worth and a reclamation of power. Through vivid metaphors and defiant proclamations, the artist asserts their legacy, refusing to let external judgment define their value. The final verses exude confidence and hope, urging listeners to embrace the fleeting beauty of life and their potential to leave an indelible mark.
Ultimately, A Walk in the Park is more than just a song—it’s a manifesto for anyone pursuing their dreams despite the odds, a tribute to the art of storytelling, and a powerful reminder that even in the darkest moments, there’s always light to be found in self-expression and perseverance.
A Walk in the park Frestyle: Lyrics:
It's a walk in the park/
I want to make millions/[Billions]
So I'm with no choice other than to take my shots/
Ample time has got me filling the void with my dreams trying to escape to em' before the curtain comes down/
See I'm staying within my element and I've got a mountain of content that I'm sitting on still treated like I'm a goner/
What these other guys should know is that they've got nothing on me/
I play for a team that they wouldn't want to see in the streets/
Needless to say this life ain't a game/
Some people come alive just for the video tape/
Hey isn't everybody famous crazy/
I'll fit right in/
Hahaha I laugh I weep/
It ain't nothing to me/
You could say I'm heartless because of the pain while it was drawn out like 1000 slices/
Yeah day in and day out I'm trying to keep it peaceful and reason with these people that know none/
Studying the fidelity deity of the tune/
After hearing this what do you really believe/
Could this be you/
Well if I got to wilding there'd be no place for me in this world/
When I get to playing other peoples stuff its all old news/
Maybe Cupid could come through and shoot Bae in that booty she's showing off every day/
These fools should tell me their story/
I'll hear it and tell them the truth/
This industry's cut throat/
It ain't nothing for you/
Me, I've got something to prove/
All right yeah when push comes to shove I don't even want to be on the record/
I'm biting the bullet for my generation because I know I'll do it justice/
It takes a set of balls to rig up the vibe seeing through to the better times has got me shedding a tear for the other guys/
When you've got it like me all you ever get is scrutinized/
So I'm just living low key/
I've got a date with destiny but I'll forget the time because I love a good story/
And I'm having trouble convincing myself of a few things so I could use the moral just like a few of yuhs' I know/
If there ain't' any cash to be made would I still go for broke/
Hell no/[Hell Yeah!]
What do you know/
It's Johnnie smokes lending a hand to the vibe serving up masterpiece after masterpiece/
Sure I've mustered up another go/
There was a point where it couldn't get any worse/
Don't you know just what you're asking for when you're asking to blow/
It Ain't' any fairy tale that she's rolled/
It all started with quite the display of recognition/
I caught some winks and I knew I was in/
I didn't really know what I had to bring when I click that red record button/
I'm just letting my soul sing/
Ain't that a beautiful thing/
Love me how you love me/
Because baby this life is the only one we'll ever get/
If this doesn't live forever all I'll [we'll] ever wonder is what gives/

Unit 10 - My Personal Ethic as I Navigate Being a Nature Interpreter
Throughout my blog I have continuously mentioned my profound sense of awe and wonder towards nature. Nature's interconnectedness and holistic beauty is what I find the most remarkable, rather than isolated elements. As interpreters are to create or bring forth deeper meanings based on their unique understandings, I find that it is easiest to convey or share my connection to the world as a whole (Beck et al., 2018). Subjective and emotional connection that individuals can have with nature is a key aspect of effective personal interpretation.
Bringing Forth My Personality:
I try my best to convey a thoughtful and reflective perspective to my work. I always encourage contemplation or pauses to take a deeper look at the world around us. My interpretive techniques are aimed to be both engaging and thought-provoking.

Image taken on a slow, peaceful, morning with friends watching the sunrise over Lake Ontario.
I enjoy highlighting the colourful and bubbly elements to everything I see. Having fun is what keeps me going!

Image of me & my friend letting the river float us in the current's desired direction.

Image of me copying the growth of a tree trunk.
Understanding my Beliefs & Ethics:
Although my tone is usually silly, I approach things with an emphasis on historical context, energetic and relational engagement, and a mindful presence. I prioritize recognizing a regions history and must understand what came before me. Moving beyond superficial understanding reveals the interconnectedness of past and present (Beck et al., 2018). As well, I have a boundless amount of energy to speak with others and willingness to spend time collaboratively. I feel that speaking with others shows that there is value in using my personality in interpretation and creates a people-centred approach. Also, clear passion for the subject matter inspires stewardship (Beck et al., 2018). My dedication to observation and appreciation is crucial in communicating to others how I feel.
The sense of place and connection I feel came from my parent's nurturing and caring abilities. I would not be where I am today without their guidance. Looking forward in my life, I aspire to share responsible interpretation using factual accuracy.

Image of my father with two of his brothers at his side. Family will always come first, and my connection with others stems from this environment.

Image of my mother in the middle of maintenance on a wooden box from decades prior. She has always taught me to be incredibly mindful with all materials we come across in life.
Combining Principles for Impactful Interpretation:
Merging my personal ethics and communication styles with established interpretive principles allows me to create experiences that are engaging, thought-provoking, and transformative.
Thematic Interpretation - One of my biggest focuses in interpretation is interconnectedness. I love exploring the ways different elements of nature, culture, and history are woven together. I try to ensure there is a clear and compelling theme that ties everything together. For example, I might design a program showing how even the smallest organisms in an ecosystem have vital roles, reinforcing the idea that every part of nature is significant. By incorporating historical narratives and cultural heritage, I can add another layer to the story, helping people see the depth or complexity of the landscape.
Engaging Delivery - I want people to not only learn, but to feel something through my interpretation. I like to read or try to use a reflective and poetic tone in writing, and I try to carry that into my spoken presentations as well. Storytelling is one of the most powerful tools for interpretation, and I enjoy weaving personal anecdotes and historical accounts into my work. Whether leading a guided walk or writing an interpretive panel, I strive to create an experience that lingers in people's mind long after they leave my side.
Provoking Thought - Encouraging people to think differently about their surroundings is one of my favourite aspects of interpretation. I believe that fostering a sense of wonder is just as important as providing information. Rather than simply explaining facts (which are still very important), I like to pose open-ended questions. This aligns with Freeman Tilden's principle that interpretation should provoke thought rather than just instruct (Beck et al., 2018). By helping people see nature from a fresh perspective, I hope to inspire that curiosity or deeper engagement.
Leveraging Visual Communication - As someone who learns best through visuals, I naturally incorporate those elements into my interpretation. I find that images, infographics, and interactive exhibits can make complex topics more accessible and engaging. Some of these include...
using photographs and illustrations to tell stories and highlight over-arching themes
encouraging art-based interpretation, like music, nature journaling, photography, or sketching observations
utilizing digital media to reach broader audiences. Blending visual and experiential learning, different learning styles can be catered
These help to make interpretation more immersive and meaningful.
The Role of the Interpreter:
Being an interpreter means more than just sharing knowledge, it's about inspiring others to care (Beck et al., 2018). I strive to be enthusiastic, approachable, and adaptable, making my interpretation accessible to people from all walks of life. Asking the right questions, sparking curiosity, and creating interactive experiences are essential tools in my approach.
My approach is developing and always evolving, but at its core, it is shaped by my love for history, nature, and meaningful connections. By combining these passions with thoughtful storytelling, visual communication, and interactive engagement, I hope to create experiences that not only educate but inspire. Interpretation, to me, is about fostering a deeper relationship between people and the world around them. Throughout my career, I look forward to continuing this journey and sharing my perspectives with a wide variety of audiences.

Image of me wading in the river watching sucker fish migrate. I love being a leader in interpretation!

Movie Review...Bad Genius

(5/5) There's nothing quite like discovering an unexpected gem in the film world, and Bad Genius is one such treasure. Unearthed while exploring the director's filmography after watching the polarizing "Captain America: Brave New World," this film, featuring familiar faces, has undeniably earned a spot in my list of must-watch movies.
How the filmmakers managed to transform a narrative about a high school cheating ring into a suspenseful, bank heist-style film is beyond me. Kudos to the creative team for their exceptional storytelling. With a runtime of less than two hours, the film deftly tackles complex themes and stories, weaving a gripping tale that keeps you on the edge of your seat.
At its core, "Bad Genius" explores the struggle to maintain integrity and morals in a world that often rewards the opposite. This theme resonates deeply with me on a personal level and reflects the broader societal challenges we face today, especially in America (I blame Baby Boomers and Gen Xers). The film shines a spotlight on the immense pressures—both societal and financial—faced by minority youth, who must strive for perfection and overachievement just to gain a fraction of what others have. This struggle is poignantly captured in the saying, "You have to work twice as hard to get half of what they have." Something, I myself, have heard and have been told.
The cast's performances are nothing short of stellar, bringing authenticity and depth to their roles. The lead character's journey is particularly compelling, culminating in a finale that is both satisfying and thought-provoking. The protagonist's ability to outsmart the system and turn the game to their advantage is the perfect culmination of their arc.
In a world where integrity and morality are constantly challenged, this film serves as a timely reminder of the value of standing strong in the face of adversity.

Under My Invisible Umbrella by Laurel Fantauzzo: An Analysis
"I wanted to be small enough to fit, but big enough to be seen."
This powerful line from Laurel Fantauzzo’s Under My Invisible Umbrella encapsulates the profound paradox at the heart of her essay. It speaks to the universal yearning for belonging while preserving individuality, a struggle intensified by Fantauzzo’s experiences as a mixed-race individual navigating cultural and personal identities. In her reflective narrative, she explores what it means to exist in the spaces between, between cultures, between visibility and invisibility, between connection and isolation. Through vivid storytelling and poignant metaphors, Fantauzzo invites readers into her world, offering an intimate look at the challenges and beauty of embracing a multifaceted identity.
In Under My Invisible Umbrella, Laurel Fantauzzo intricately unpacks the tension between wanting to belong and striving to maintain her individuality. The metaphor of wanting to be "small enough to fit, but big enough to be seen" encapsulates her struggle to reconcile her dual heritage, Filipino and Italian, while navigating spaces where neither identity feels fully recognized.
Fantauzzo’s narrative reveals how societal perceptions often place individuals into rigid categories, leaving those who defy singular definitions feeling excluded. Her mixed-race background positions her in a liminal space, part of both cultures yet fully embraced by neither. This is evident in her experiences in the Philippines, where she is seen as "too foreign" despite her Filipino lineage, and in other contexts, where her Filipino roots are erased in favor of her Italian features. Fantauzzo illustrates how this constant push-and-pull creates a longing to "fit," to find a space where she can claim belonging without having to compromise her complex identity.
The invisible umbrella she carries both a shield and a barrier that symbolizes the tension between protection and isolation, a theme that resonates with anyone navigating the complexities of identity in a world that often demands simplicity. Yet, Fantauzzo’s story is ultimately one of resilience. By finding strength in her in-betweenness, she challenges traditional notions of belonging, showing that identity is not about fitting perfectly into one place but about embracing the multifaceted nature of who we are.
Her essay leaves readers with a powerful message: in a world that often asks us to shrink ourselves to fit, true belonging is found in standing unapologetically in the spaces where we are both seen and whole.

Compulsory Question 2 - Restate your artistic vision statement, and revise it if necessary.
Select one work of design under the theme of social engagement (W3) or tradition/ lineages (W4 & 5). Discuss this choice in connection with your own aspirations and the themes of CTS B. Start by revisiting your artistic vision statement. Is it well thought out? Based on your classmate’s comments, do you think it needs to be revised? Select at least one work of design that really resonates with you, that connects with your vision statement. List down the reasons for your choice, bearing in mind your vision statement and the range of CTS B topics.
Upon hearing Week 10’s exercise–to craft an artistic statement–I held a long hesitation before finally deciding to scribble something down.
Telling stories through the reflection of life.
In truth, I was unsure of what I wanted to say, and my statement went through many revisions before I settled down for the sake of time. I’ve always held a love for storytelling, and so I thought what better way to celebrate that than to imprint it upon my craft. Stories transpire people: epics, myths, folklore,... all variations of storytelling holds the culture and traditions they were born into. They pass down morals and ethics through reaching into people’s pathos and asserting emotion. To me, to weave a narrative is the purest expression of arts and design.
There are numerous examples of this within our course. The focus on Visual Communication goes all the way back to cave paintings, to clay tablets, to woodprints,... each a system created for the transfer of knowledge; and now within the contemporary world, we’ve collected enough of them to wield as we please, not just as a form of pure communication but also to evoke emotions through decoration. To me–what we are doing is a form of celebration of what's came before.
A lifelong obsession of mine–the manga series One Piece (1) by Eiichiro Oda– has run for serialization for over 1100 weekly chapters in the span of 27 years, and is still ongoing. The story is about a goofy group of pirates in a fantastical world trying to find the ultimate treasure, visiting multiple islands in search of it. While not a design work that would ever be represented within our learning course, the reason I fell in love with it and want to include it here is its inspiration. The story is divided into arcs–each island visited composed of a different adventure that is inspired by real world cultures and stories. It is not wholly original, but through the eyes of its creator becomes a work of its own, and goes on to inspire countless people across the world, becoming one of the best-selling fictions in history. This to me is aspirational. The dedicated work of one man goes on to live in history, allowing for multiple retelling whether through adaptations, conventions, communities. An unexpected inspiration, but one that shows me the power that could be held through visual storytelling.
Where does this lead me? Perhaps it is just a senseless admiration for the work–one that has entertained and inspired me throughout my entire life, and helped me craft the understanding of art that I hold today. My artistic vision is a celebration of the love for storytelling found in our history, and one that I want to continue to strive for in the future.

Week 12 Summative
This is my current artistic vision statement:
1. What is my design strength?
I think my design strength lies in photography, as I enjoy being behind the camera capturing moments that tells a compelling story.
2. Who do I want to become in 5 years?
In five years, I want to be a successful videographer and photographer.
3. What do I want to do between now and then? Why?
I will build my portfolio, experiment with different photography styles, refine my skills and gain experience. This will help me develop a distinctive style I like as a photographer.
4. How will I do it?
I will achieve this by participating in photography projects, and dedicating time to observe how others do it and continue being inspired by many of the photographers out there
I think my artistic vision is clear and aligns with my passion for photography. I try to outline both a goal and the steps I plan to take to achieve this dream. Similarly to week 3’s topic on social engagement, what truly inspires me in photography is having the ability to control what goes behind the camera and create to convey a message to the public. Take director Pat Boonnitipat’s movie ‘How To Make Millions Before Grandma Dies’ film for an example.

This movie explores themes of valuing relationships especially family, over superficial success. I was very touched by the movie and like many others that have watched it, we felt the need to be much more appreciative of our family members. Strongly inspired by this impact this director made, I carry this motivation with me striving to create art that evokes these emotions to be felt, conveying meaningful messages to the right audience, sparking reflection and encouraging to see beauty and value in their own lives and relationships.
Recently, I also worked on a project for my image specialist replicating the experience of being a dementia through a photobook. Aiming to visually capture the disorientation, fading memories and moments of clarity that defines their journey. In doing so, I wish to not only share the struggles of a dementia but also the pain of losing a loved one to this illness they did not choose. While bearing the pain of watching a loved gradually lose touch with reality, I wish my photobook would bring comfort to those and bring awareness to this illness as well.
Some photos from the project:

One work of design that felt really inspiring and resonates with my artistic vision is this short film ‘to(get)her’. The storyline follows the song ‘White Ferrari’ By Frank Ocean, interpreted into a short film. It felt so authentic and there was definitely a distinct style of filming, though short there was a powerful storytelling that emerges from each moment. I could see how creative this video was made with moments where they synced scenes with the music beats on 3:28. Additionally, there was also this transition at 3:35 where it transits from her removing water on his face to wiping away his tears in the present that signifies an end of a relationship. It is these pocket of inspiration that really motivates me, keeping my vision clear, constantly reminding myself to what I really want in being a photographer/filmmaker. All while staying authentic to myself, and connecting with audiences inspiring a deeper reflection on humanity.

Roby Irzal Maulana: A Brilliant Author Overlooked by His Own Nation
Jakarta, September 21, 2024 – Roby Irzal Maulana, a talented Indonesian author and academic, has spent years writing works that highlight the richness of his country’s cultural heritage. With a unique ability to blend local folklore with modern themes, Roby has earned recognition abroad for his dedication to preserving traditional Indonesian values through his novels. Yet, despite his literary prowess, he remains underappreciated in his homeland.
As a writer, Roby’s focus has always been on ensuring that Indonesia’s vast array of myths, legends, and cultural narratives remain alive in the public consciousness. His works often delve into the supernatural, drawing on the horror genre to reintroduce readers to the rich folklore passed down through generations. But while his efforts have garnered international attention, they seem to fall flat within the very country whose culture he is striving to preserve.
"Literature is a powerful tool for cultural preservation," Roby explained in a recent interview. "I want to use my writing to remind people of the stories that define who we are as Indonesians, stories that are being forgotten in the rush to embrace modernity."
Roby’s novels not only explore Indonesia’s cultural and historical wealth, but they also serve as subtle critiques of how quickly younger generations are losing touch with their roots. In a world increasingly dominated by global trends and Western media, Roby’s books offer a counterbalance, reminding readers of the depth and uniqueness of their own cultural traditions. However, this message often seems to be drowned out by the influx of foreign influences.
"It’s disappointing to see how little interest there is in our own culture," Roby said. "People are more fascinated by foreign stories and narratives, while our own are slipping away into obscurity."
Despite the lack of recognition in Indonesia, Roby’s work has resonated with readers abroad. Critics from international literary communities have praised his creative fusion of horror, cultural storytelling, and social commentary. Yet, in Indonesia, his works often go unnoticed, and the author feels the sting of being overlooked by the very society he is trying to impact.
Roby’s situation reflects a broader issue that many Indonesian artists and intellectuals face: a lack of appreciation for local talent in favor of imported content. While Indonesia’s culture is lauded for its diversity and depth, those who seek to preserve and celebrate it are often left to struggle for recognition.
Roby’s supporters argue that his contributions to literature and cultural preservation deserve far more attention than they receive. His novels are not just stories—they are a plea for the Indonesian people to reconnect with their heritage before it is too late.
Despite these challenges, Roby remains committed to his mission. "I’m not doing this for fame or recognition," he stated. "I just want to make sure that our culture survives. Even if people don’t appreciate it now, perhaps in the future, they’ll understand the importance of what I’m trying to do."
In the face of indifference, Roby continues to write, hopeful that one day his nation will embrace both his work and the cultural legacy he seeks to protect. His journey as an overlooked yet resilient writer speaks to the broader issue of cultural preservation in a rapidly modernizing world, reminding us all that true value is often recognized too late.

Love and Light
Love and light are powerful symbols that resonate deeply with the essence of my blog. Love, with its warmth and compassion, has the ability to connect people and heal hearts. Light, with its brightness and illumination, symbolizes clarity, enlightenment, and guidance in times of darkness. By choosing these words to represent my blog, I am not only embracing positivity but also spreading kindness and hope to my readers. I focus on love and light signifies your commitment to uplifting and inspiring others, making my blog a beacon of positivity in a world that sometimes feels overwhelmed by negativity. Keep shining your love and light through your words and continue to make a difference in the lives of those who seek solace and encouragement.
In my blog post "Photographer's Eye," I explored five images captured with my mirrorless camera. While I used the term "candid moments" to depict the photos, the underlying theme, especially in the image descriptions, revolves around love. These images portray the affection and brightness exchanged among individuals, and I find it truly captivating to have captured such moments on camera.
As I sift through each image, I am reminded of the beauty that lies within the simplicity of human connection. The way a smile can light up a face, how a gentle touch can convey a world of emotions, and the way eyes meet, revealing unspoken stories. It is in these fleeting moments that love truly shines through, capturing the essence of what it means to be human. Each photograph tells a unique tale, a chapter in the grand story of life, frozen in time for us to revisit and cherish. Through my lens, I strive to capture not just faces and places but the very essence of love and connection that binds us all together.
In the blog post I created titled "Public Art" I looked at a sculpture of Romeo and Juliet that is here on my local FSW campus. What more can symbolize love than a sculpture of one of the greatest love stories in English literature? The sculpture stands tall and proud, capturing the essence of Shakespeare's tragic lovers in a timeless embrace. As the sun sets behind it, casting a warm glow over the campus, the figures seem to come to life, their love story unfolding before the eyes of all who pass by.
Public art has a unique way of bringing beauty and storytelling to our surroundings, adding depth and meaning to our daily lives. The sculpture of Romeo and Juliet serves as a powerful reminder of the enduring themes of love, passion, and tragedy that resonate with people from all walks of life. It invites us to pause, reflect, and appreciate the artistry and emotion captured in its intricate details. This piece of public art not only enhances the aesthetics of the campus but also sparks conversations and connections among those who encounter it, fostering a sense of community and shared appreciation for the arts. As we admire this sculpture, we are reminded of the universal language of love that transcends time and space, touching our hearts and inspiring us to cherish the beauty and complexity of human relationships.
In this blog post, I delved into the intricate world of abstract images, exploring the essence of light in art. As I gazed upon a mesmerizing painting, I found myself drawn to its vibrant hues and captivating forms. The play of colors reminded me of a joyous sunset, casting a warm glow that evoked a sense of tranquility and wonder.
Through my analytical lens, I uncovered the subtle nuances of light within the artwork, unraveling its hidden depths and underlying emotions. Each brushstroke seemed to dance with the essence of light, creating a symphony of colors that spoke to the soul.
As I reflected on the beauty of the painting, I realized how light can be a powerful force in art, shaping our perceptions and eliciting a range of emotions. It serves as a beacon of inspiration, guiding us through the shadows and illuminating the path to creativity and self-expression. "Abstract Images" encapsulated my journey of discovery, where light became the thread that wove together art and emotion, inviting readers to embark on a visual adventure of light and color.
By connecting with my audience through my blog, I have found a platform to express my thoughts and ideas freely. The feedback and interactions I receive help me refine my creativity and see things from different perspectives. It's amazing how sharing my work online has not only allowed me to showcase my creativity but also has pushed me to explore new ways of thinking and approaching my craft. The journey of blogging has truly been a rewarding experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to share my passion with the world.

Blog Post #2: Storytelling
Crafting a story is an act of sharing our experiences, shaping them in a way that resonates with our audience. It involves evoking the emotions we felt during those moments. While exploring videos on storytelling, I appreciated the diverse approaches shared by the storytellers. As we age, we may perceive ourselves as less imaginative, yet as children, creativity flowed effortlessly. Despite maturing, that imaginative spark remains within us. We simply just need to rediscover it by reflecting on past experiences that elicited strong emotions, whether joy or sadness. Crafting a compelling narrative requires honesty and perseverance. It often takes multiple attempts before refining our story. One storyteller mentioned drawing inspiration from a personal epiphany, which resonated with me as I aspire to share a challenging experience and the lessons gained from it. In essence, storytelling allows us to convey our unique perspectives and insights, as no one experiences a situation in the same way. By delving into our own experiences and embracing honesty, we can craft stories that not only entertain but also educate and inspire others.
Exploring the world and character dynamics in storytelling fascinated me, as it allows storytellers flexibility in their narrative approach. What ultimately matters is how these elements converge to form a cohesive story. I appreciated how each Pixar storyteller articulated their unique creative process, offering valuable insights. For instance, one storyteller found resonance in Toy Story due to its exploration of growing up and overcoming hardships, showcasing the importance of connecting the narrative to broader themes. This perspective challenged my previous belief that character development solely drove a story's value, highlighting the significance of the world in which characters exist. However, while I find value in this perspective, I prioritize delving into my characters' struggles and aspirations as a foundation for crafting a compelling narrative. As one Pixar storyteller stated, characters may evolve uniquely, but the consistency of their environment serves as a backdrop for their journey throughout the plot.
The section on pondering "what ifs" particularly resonated with me. I found the insight from one of the storytellers intriguing, suggesting that posing these questions allows us to tap into our imaginative faculties by momentarily setting aside logical thinking. This perspective reminded me that storytelling doesn't always require intense analysis. Sometimes, it's about reconnecting with our inner child and allowing our minds to wander freely to more imaginative realms. This notion struck a chord with me, as I sometimes feel pressured to constantly generate original ideas. However, I've come to realize that creativity takes time to flourish and isn't automatically unlocked. Instead, it's about embracing the process, asking "what if" questions, and letting ideas flow naturally without rushing or overthinking.
The advice from the storytellers will undoubtedly guide me in crafting my own personal narrative. While I dislike making mistakes, I understand that they are an integral part of the creative process. Rather than discarding errors, I can use them as learning opportunities to refine my story. Making mistakes doesn't equate to failure; it signifies progress and growth. This journey will inevitably involve trial and error, but I am committed to continually refining and evolving my story, driven by the initial emotions it evokes within me, striving to make it the best it can possibly be.

I Made Stuff in 2020
Shoutout to @nevermindirah for the tag
Rules: It’s time to love yourselves! Choose your 5 favorite works (fics, art, edits, etc.) you’ve created this year and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you’ve brought into the world in 2020. If you don’t have five published works, that’s fine! Include ideas/drafts/whatever you like that you’ve worked on/thought about, and talk a little about them instead! Remember, this is all about self-love and positive enthusiasm, so fuck the rules if you need to. Have fun, and tag as many fellow creators as you like so they can share the love! <3
In 2020 I re-watched Leverage, which led me to tumblr, which led me to seeing these posts about this movie The Old Guard, which led me to watch one of the best films I’ve ever seen, which led me to AO3, which led me to discord. Before falling down The Old Guard rabbit hole, I hadn’t written fanfiction since 2012. Unsurprisingly, a lot has changed since 2012 for me and for the internet. For the first time since my participation in internet fandom, I feel like I’ve found a community online and that is probably the big theme of this post: making for each other has been an absolute joy in an otherwise pretty shit year.
This is not really a year in review, so much as a last two months review (my first fic of the year was published on November 2nd) but it’s been a utterly delightful and impactful couple of months, so here we are. On to the fics!
1. The Sport of Bright Steel - This was the fic that started it all. Someone on the Old Guard kinkmeme prompted a Joe/Nicky fic from the POV of their swords and I sat down on my couch one Saturday morning and an hour later had a lil piece of fanfiction all written out. And then I panicked that it was terrible and weird and so posted it anonymously to the kinkmeme. And then someone in the discord rec-ed it in the fanfic channel and then I dusted off my old AO3 account and posted for the first time in 8 freaking years.
2. Our Toil Shall Strive to Mend - This was my second foray back into fanfic (once again, inspired by a kinkmeme prompt), and the first multi-chaptered fic I ever wrote. Big manly man with tiny human? I am weak. I love all of the Old Guard characters, but I think Booker will forever be my favorite to explore in fic. Unlike the others, Booker is a reluctant soldier and much of his pain comes from losing his identity as a husband and father. This fic asks what if Booker’s path to healing comes in the form of fatherhood? Writing the last chapter made me cry happy-sad tears for him.
3. The Perfect Shot - From the idea that both snipers and photographers are in search of “the perfect shot” came this delightfully silly little fic. Nicolo di Genova, sniper and international man of mystery, knows one damn pun/pick-up line and just so happens to find the one man (Joe, photojournalist) whom it works on hook-line-sinker. Everything about this is fun and makes me happy. Never in a million year would I have written this, if not for a very silly post on this website that someone on discord suggested as a Joe/Nicky prompt. Inspiration strikes in the most unexpected of ways. And I fucking love puns, y’all.
4. This Rough Magic - Nicky is a selkie who accidentally get himself married to unsuspecting, marine scientist Joe and it might be my favorite thing I’ve written all year. It’s a story about identity and the unexpected and being willing to take a leap of faith. This fic would not have happened without the discord, and made me so so grateful and happy to be creating with other people and as part of a community. The joy of fanfic is that it is freely created and given, and I never would have dared to write this story without the inspiration, support, and enthusiasm from internet friends.
5. Bring the World Back into Tune - aka my Book of Nile opus, still a work in progress. Technically it’s a Hades/Persephone fusion, but really it’s about finding family, finding healing, and finding love, about making meaningful choices despite whatever fate or the supernatural has in mind. I fell into Book of Nile because who they are beyond being immortal has so much in common: growing up basically ghettoized in a country that doesn’t give a damn about you, fighting for an imperial army because there were no other viable choices, knowing the pain of missing 1st families. In Bring the World Back into Tune I love that I get to explore what it means to be fated for something (they’ve become Hades and Persephone without realizing it, in addition to the whole immortal thing), and also what it means to still get to choose how you arrive at and cope with that fate. Very few people are reading this on AO3, but it’s something I love working on and through because the characters and ideas are so compelling.
Honorable Mention: Leaving AO3 Comments - One of my greatest joys this year has been in giving to others the kind of love and support I’ve received as a person who makes stuff on the internet. I love leaving AO3 comments, and applying my English major brain to what I’m reading. The things we love most are deserving of our critical attention, including and especially fanfiction. I’ve met fandom soul-mates in the AO3 comments and befriended authors. In response to a shitty anon comment on another fic, I crafted what might be my fanfic manifesto: why fanfic is the heir of western storytelling moreso than our popular media and why the “expectedness” of fanfic is in fact its greatest feature, not it’s biggest flaw. It is A+ work, if I do say so myself.
None of this would have been possible without the internet (the kinkmeme, tumblr, discord, and of course AO3) and, perhaps more importantly, without the great, supportive Old Guard fan communities. Thank you for the beautiful fic and stunning art. For the thoughtful meta and funny headcanons. For the cheering and screaming and encouragement. For the kudos and comments. We make for ourselves and each other and that’s a truly remarkable thing.
Thanks to @hyper-fixate @sweetlyenchains and many others for being so lovely and kind and making my 2020 better with The Old Guard fic and art and thinking and community. If y’all are inspired to do this year end recap too (whether tagged or not), please tag me! I’d love to read about your triumphs too!
