They went shopping for presents for all the foundlings and all of Luke's students. I'd bet Din would appreciate a bit of help...

What Might Be
Book: The Elementalists
Pair: MC x Beckett
Summary: Beckett finds a special mirror that shows exactly what the heart wants. So why is it showing him Ellie?
Authors Note: If they can use illusions to Harry Potter I can too! So I played with the mirror of erised some. There were a few ways I could have went with this but wrote the first thing I thought of. Maybe I’ll do this with other characters who knows?
Beckett Harrington sat in the library with a stack of books next to him. It was the throes of finals as his friends were around him sleeping soundly. The library was fortunately opened until two am as he glanced at the clock to only see it was midnight. To his right Shreya snored slightly and Zeph mumbled something in his sleep. On the couch Ellie shivered as Beckett laid his jacket over her sleeping form. Too bad Griffin wasn’t here but he had some other buddies to hang out with.
Sighing he went to put his book back, he could continue for at least the remaining two hours. Beckett stopped at the hall where he and Ellie caught that book together as he smiled. Shaking his head, he went to turn back when something glistened in the distance. That could be trouble as he thought of getting a teacher or his friends but thought better of it.
Before he could turn back he found himself drawn toward whatever it was. If it was something malicious it would have already attacked right? He squared his shoulders and went to check mentally reviewing everything he learned only to find himself standing in front of a mirror.
No, he thought, he couldn’t as he went and backed away. He was in trouble enough for the wards with his friends as he turned to change his mind.
To his utter surprise when he peered in, he didn’t see himself. No, instead he found what looked like a bedroom. Two forms were between the sheets giggling to each other as he watched on fascinated as he pressed his hand against the glass. Maybe it showed flashes of something. Like a film or something. He looked around and noticed an etching on the back. Erised stra ehru oyt ube cafru oyt on wohsi.
To his horror his hand disappeared inside the mirror. No, no, he thought before closing his eyes and pulled his arm out as it slid in and out with ease. The liquid like glass shimmered as curious he stepped inside it. Behind him the mirror still stood as he saw the face of one of the people on the bed. That was Ellie and some guy on top of her.
Beckett couldn’t be jealous, could he?
“Ellie, Ellie, who is that?” he said but she didn’t even seem to be hearing him. His eyes glued to her he could only watched as she groaned her eyes closed matching the rhythm of the person on top of her. Her nails digging into foreign skin and her pants small and quick as she seemed to have achieved her climax. Unable to look, he covered his eyes as he heard lips detaching. He had to get out of here as he darted for the door.
“Hmm Beckett,” she screamed as he stopped wondering if she knew if he was in here. He turned to see his face staring back at him. The man she was with, the person that was on top of her, it was him. “Don’t stop.”
To his fascination he was making Ellie moan, no, scream his name even. To think he was jealous of another man being in her bed and it turns out it was himself. Boy did he feel like an idiot as he went for the door. He couldn’t stay and watch them play with each other as he turned toward the door.
To his ever-growing astonishment he just glided on through the door, like it wasn’t even there. What the? What kind of magic was this? He turned into the other room as he looked around it was dark as his eyes adjusted to the new darkness. It seemed like a normal room when he stepped over to a crib. No…
Inside the crib slept the cutest baby with blond hair and pale skin. Her blanket kicked off her as she suckled on her thumb. Cautious, Beckett got on his knees as he pressed his face up against the crib. This was… Could it really be his and Ellie’s child?
What was the mirror trying to tell him? That he and Ellie were going to have kids and be in love forever and ever. Actually, that didn’t sound so bad, he thought, as a smile tugged at the corner of his lips. No, that couldn’t be right, they were only twenty as Beckett took in a deep breath as he took in his surroundings once more. Behind him the baby cried out as he panicked not knowing what to do.
The door opened as the other him stepped into the room. This Beckett seemed like he knew exactly what he was doing as he was much more confident. He watched as the other him picked up the small infant to comfort her. “Yea, daddy’s here,” he said soothingly. “I got you.”
That seemed to calm her as he checked her diaper and went to change it. This was odd, but it was kind of cute as Beckett watched his counterpart carefully. This had to tell him something as it finally clicked in his mind. The mirror he found, backward it read I show what you desire. How did this relate to what he desired? If anything, Beckett would be proud to admit the thing he desired the most was to be accomplished. He wanted to have that trophy to prove to everyone that he was intelligent and could be on the same level as Katrina. He wanted to be liked and praised. That he could save his friends and Ellie…
This- what he saw- was a whole different story. What could sexually pleasing Ellie and himself and a baby prove about his desires? Then it hit him like a pile of rocks to his stomach. Beckett wanted a family one that he could love and not be pressured to be better. His father was emotionally distant and never really there. Katrina, while incredibly kind to him, had a standard that he tried to live up to. His mother, while close with him, had the same expectations. He put all those pressures on himself trying to be better.
Here it was like he could be himself and he could change that. Beckett didn’t put that kind of pressure on his own children at least this small. Ellie was someone that he could learn to love. First his friend and then get romantically involved.
“She’s all set sunshine,” said the other him as Ellie stood in the doorway waiting for him to come back to bed.
Beckett found what he was looking for as he sprinted for the way he came. He popped out of the other side of the mirror as he caught his breath. Nobody was around as he went searching for Ellie. He had to show her this, she wouldn’t believe it. Maybe he could show Shreya and their other friends too.
It didn’t take long to find Ellie herself as he didn’t want to search for the others. They would all be up there soon enough and they could show them together. If he was honest with himself, he just wanted to be alone with her for a bit. Maybe if she saw the same thing they could talk about it.
Finally, he pulled her back to the library to show her what he found. It was easy to wake her up and explain. “It shows your deepest desires and you can step inside the mirror and walk around in it,” said Beckett as he hoped that Ellie saw the same thing he did. “I think we’ll all see something different but look. What do you see?”
“I don’t think I’ll be walking in,” said Ellie still spooked after what happened last time as he nodded understanding. He stood her in front of the mirror. She looked startled as she put her hand on the mirror a small smile on her face. The liquid like texture rippled but she just stared. “I see us, all our friends and my family, everyone is so happy and healthy. Is that…? I think that’s my real parents. This looks like it’s a party that they’re at…”
Beckett’s face fell slightly that she didn’t see the same as him. What she desired the most was seeing everyone okay, nothing wrong… Well she had her real parents and that spoke volumes of what she really desired. She wanted her family whole again as he saw that she had tears glistening in her eyes. He stood behind her as she just smiled as Beckett was happy for her.
“Thank you for showing me this,” she said as she wiped her eyes. “What did you see?”
Panicked he lied, “I saw me with that award at the end of the semester,” he said bordering on a mumble. He wasn’t going to tell her what he really saw. He didn’t want to take away her feelings and what she was seeing, it was selfish. Instead he grinned at her as he took her hand. Ellie smiled brilliantly as she leaned her head on his shoulder. The felt right though Beckett as he rested his head on hers. Maybe one day that could be their future.
