Official Investigations Manga
This is the 63rd post in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Countdown: 18 days left until release!
Today's topic: the official Investigations manga!
Yes, you read that right, there is an official manga of Ace Attorney Investigations! (There's also one of Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney but the Investigations one is better.) It's not explicitly canon to the games but it doesn't contradict anything either so you can easily take it as canon if you want to.
Tumblr media
The Investigations manga consists of 4 volumes each containing two different cases. They're not all the same length, some are longer, some shorter, but they're all really interesting. The cases are as follows:
Turnabout Costume: A murder at a costume party at the Gatewater Hotel. (A short but highly entertaining one! Poor Miles gets mistaken for in costume and directed to the completely wrong event 😄)
Turnabout Last Number: A murder at the last concert of a famous rock band that Gumshoe wanted Miles to accompany him to. (This is what Turnabout Serenade wanted to be, there I said it. And this case completely pulls it off! Not to mention, Miles at a rock concert is glorious 😂)
Turnabout Bullet: A police officer chases an armed jewel robber into an abandoned building and everything goes wrong. (This is a comparatively serious one but still really good. The cast is quite small but the tension lies in what exactly happened in a very limited timeframe.)
Turnabout Museum: A rare piece of art is threatened to be stolen by a famous group of art thieves and Gumshoe is supposed to protect it. Then a murder happens. (Another really good one with a lot of action from Gumshoe and a last surprise twist at the very end! Miles is almost arrested for the crime of being too handsome and I love it 😄)
Turnabout New Year: The mysterious death of a company's president on New Year's looks like a suicide brought on by a family's curse. (Also relatively short and one of the weaker ones but still entertaining and full of Japanese New Year's traditions. This one I found the most obvious, I think.)
Turnabout Silver Screen: One of the stars of a series of successful detective films is murdered after the premiere of the latest movie. (One of my favourites, this is so good! Also one of the longest ones and really emotional, among other things Miles deals with a controversy around the verdict of one of his previous cases.)
Turnabout! The Secret of the Orges: After their car broke down Miles and Gumshoe are forced to stay at a decrepit hotel in the middle of nowhere, a murder happens with an orge being the prime suspect. (Another one of my favourites! It sounds ridiculous (and it is) but the premise is used to its full potential. There are so many wonderful, funny and tragic scenes and the murder method is genius.)
Turnabout Clinic: A murder at a supposed wonder clinic that doesn't live up to its reputation in more ways than one. (Again a relatively short one and on the weaker side though that might also be my bias against clinic settings. Finding out how it was done was the most interesting and tricky part.)
The Investigations format lends itself better to crime stories outside of the games (especially if they have to be on the shorter side) than the trial structure from the main series (which the PW manga struggles with a little). Most (not all) of the cases involve Miles and Gumshoe just going about their business when murders keep happening around them so it feels very familiar to the games 😄 Apart from these two (and Ema appearing in one case) no other characters from the games make appearances which is a bit sad, I would've loved Kay or Shi-Long to show up. That doesn't take away from the stories though, especially since they have to establish their case-specific casts in a comparatively short amount of time so not filling half of them with familiar faces helps in making the mysteries more interesting. It also puts Miles and Gumshoe and their (work) relationship in the foreground which I really appreciate, you get a lot of adorably cute interactions between them and Miles even shows his caring side on multiple occasions! There's one manga-specific character appearing in multiple cases (a female officer, Officer Hammer, who works with Gumshoe and Miles) and one character that first appeared in the PW manga who makes a return in one case (though it's not necessary to have read that to understand her character).
The manga takes place sometime after JFA and before the 7 year timeskip but other than that they're not specifically set between any given cases of the games or even give any specific dates. That helps them not interfere with anything and they basically fit wherever you'd like to put them in the timeline. They sometimes refer back to previous events in the manga (so the cases are chronological) but not to anything really specific from the games, just a few general points that are the established status quo after JFA. You could technically even read them before playing any of the Investigations games though I wouldn't recommend it because it helps to be familiar with Miles' general investigative approach. It's very reminiscent of how he works in the games just without framing his deductions and interrogations in the way of gameplay mechanics.
Of course, in the original the manga - like the games - is set in Japan and unlike in the games they couldn't really change the art in the translation to reflect the location switch so the story is notably more Japanese. In some cases it's still hardly noticable but in others it's very obvious (Turnabout New Year is the most extreme). It's not really a problem imo but it does feel different than the localised games the Western audience is used to. The translation kept all the other localisation changes though, like the names, and "translated" all the new names with the usual puns to match. They're not quite on the games' level but I definitely appreciate them even trying. I also like the art and how the characters are drawn, it's dynamic and expressive without being too over the top and while some panels look a bit weird (because of a weird perspective or a mismatched scale) most of them look nice and are creative with how they depict various scenes (including the culprits' "breakdowns"!) so that the characters aren't just statically talking at each other half the time.
In terms of story and mysteries, they work extremely well! Naturally, the mysteries are simpler since the cases are shorter but they're really well done with interesting twists and even some shocking reveals while always giving you the opportunity to figure stuff out on your own before the explanation is provided. I could easily imagine any of them working as a case in the games, they're that good. I'll definitely write more on the cases individually and what I think of them at a later point but that'd be too much for one single post. Suffice to say, there's not one I didn't like and if you can get your hands on these (they're out of print, sadly, and very hard to get now), I highly recommend them!

Simon Blackquill having to prosecute other innocent people is such an interesting thought. Like, I'm sure there are a lot of cases where he didn't know they were innocent, especially when some of the solutions in ace attorney require more red thread on the conspiracy board then any normal person would jump to, but then there would be other cases.
Cases where even if Simon doesn't know they are innocent, certainly knows the police didn't do their due diligence. Cases where it's questionable if the suspect had the means to commit these crimes. Cases where no reasonable man, woman or child would assume that they were guilty. Cases like Maya's first trial, where it's painfully obvious that they arrested her just for being there, and would have arrested Phoenix if he had been just a little less lucky, (later he was accused anyway but you know) and only got the evidence for it after deciding it was an open and shut case. (Love you gumshoe, but come on. Question her first at least)
It makes me wonder what goes through his head in AA5, specifically the middle two cases.
For Themis, Juniper is our suspect because she was able to freely move about the place during the mock trial, and it mostly followed her script, but why would she do that? It reeks of a frame up, the kind you read in a detective story (which this is, but as lawyers) there isn't a solid motive for WHY she would painstakingly arrange the crime scene, especially when she's also doing the technical work for the mock trial. Also, you mean to tell me they tracked every member of the student body? No one was in the bathroom? No one slipped out to take a phone call? There's literally no one else who could have? Makes sense from a story telling perspective, sure, too many characters otherwise, but there's a reason both Robin and Hugh become suspect before long. Then we start going in circles, and Simon knows it. He says as much, proceeding to go for a walk while we wear ourselves out.
But the other case, in Ninetales Vale, with the Tenmas.
For the Tenmas, did he not wonder how the mayor got knocked out? How unreliable filich seemed as a witness when testifying no one else was around? But then, they had a confession.
They had a confession.
Seven years prior they had had a confession.
There were no obvious second suspects then, either.

Screenshots I took when playing Ace Attorney Investigations :D [Part 5]
Part [2/2]
Spoilers for turnabout reminiscence!!
Tumblr media
This is really random but I thought of a comic idea where it's Bratworth constantly getting confused between "Yew" and "You". It sounded way funnier in my head I swear-
Tumblr media
Thank you Franzy I never knew that
I swear if there is one thing I don't like it's the fact that this game is pointing out the obvious all the time. I may stupid but I'm not THAT stupid.
Tumblr media
EXCUSE ME?? "Defendant's fresh milk"??? Who came up with these names- it's the judge isn't it?
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I swear half of these interactions give me comic ideas
Tumblr media
Franzy hates littering and so should you!! She's so based for this
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I swear half of these deduction scenes are just "Observe... As I form a thought!!" like yea everyone knew that you unlight candlestick
Tumblr media
Idk about you Edgeworth but I think it's veryyyy cute
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I love these type of moments lol
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Me when I'm about to present my attorney's badge
Tumblr media
Don't mind me, casually using this in a conversation-
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This made me laugh waaaaay more than it should have
And now my personal thoughts on this case: it was SO COOL. I knew that Callisto was the culprit but I was NOT expecting the reveal of her pretending to be the Yatagarasu and pulling a gun on Edgeworth. The fact that Kay basically saved him from being shot [specifically to the right shoulder mind you] is sooooo *explodes into purple glitter* I LOVE YOU KAYYYYY
I also really really loved Kay and Gumshoe's friendship it was so adorable. It was kind of a shame that Gumshoe didn't remember her but then again he is a bit.. slow.. to say the least. Kay's nickname for Gumshoe is also really freaking cute I love that.
Callisto is already starting to climb up the fav villain list I think I would enjoy seeing her breakdown lol I swear if it isn't dramatic I will do unspeakable things-
[Random thought but I really like her earrings they're sooo pretty I would love to buy them lol]
And last but not least, I reallyyyy like Badd, he's def one of my fav detectives and I hope I get to see more of him. I genuinely feel badd [haha] for him, especially during the confession scene, like he was just completely distraught over his friend's death. I hope he gets all the hugs and lollipops this world has to offer.
Anyway, I'm off to play the last case Turnabout Ablaze! I'll come back with more screenshots than ever before! See ya!!

If you haven’t gotten her already then maybe Kay for the meme? just cause she’s your icon and idk anything about her so I wanna hear about her lol. If you’ve gotten her then uhhh pick a character you really hoped to get but haven’t yet
I haven’t gotten any characters yet actually so thanks!!! Um spoiler warning for the investigations games lol
Favorite thing about them: I love her for so many reasons but I really like her whole yatagarasu thing, great thief stealing the truth and exposing secrets is such a fun idea, and I also adore her dynamics w other characters!! Basically any interactions she has with other characters is entertaining, she’s silly and fun and also has her strong morals and attitude that just makes her so enjoyable
Least favorite thing about them: umm. I don’t have much. I wish she was in more games I suppose.
Favorite line: I’m not the type to have specific lines memorized unless they really stand out but her whole little yatagarasu speech she gives when using little thief is silly, also every time she refers to gumshoe as Gummy hehe
brOTP: everyone god I want her to be friends w everyone. I love her familial type dynamic with edgeworth and gumshoe especially though, so sweet. Also her dynamic with franziska is fun even though there isn’t a ton of scenes with them so I like them a lot too!! Also her and Sebastian as edgeworth’s adopted kids lol I usually don’t like the ace attorney fandom’s whole “edgeworth and Phoenix adopt all these other characters as their kids” stuff but edgeworth adopts Kay and Sebastian and they get to have a silly dynamic annoying edgeworth. To me at least
OTP: I’m a big faraskye fan, she and ema have nice interactions and the whole thief x detective thing is funny. Do also like her w Regina as well, they were so fruity in that one case together lol
nOTP: I hate when ppl ship her w edgeworth shes a minor and she compares him to her dad like. I don’t subscribe to the idea of “these characters are like family kind of but a lot more so in fanon so shipping them is incest” but I feel like even in canon she and edgeworth just have such father daughter vibes that it makes me feel weird about it
Random headcanon: lesbian w adhd just like me and my gf fr. Also I like thinking that she and trucy spent a lot of time together bc like Phoenix and edgeworth connection blah blah and so Kay is where she got her mischievous streak lol
Unpopular opinion: umm can’t really think of any tbh. I don’t like when people say she’s just a copy of Maya, she’s her own character that’s extremely interesting esp in the aai flashback case and in aai2 when she loses her memory and we see how emotional and anxious she can actually be
Song that reminds me of them: I have a whole Kay playlist lol I make a lot of ace attorney playlists actually, so other than her in game theme (which is one of my favorite ace attorney songs btw) I should choose something from there. Hm maybe hand me my shovel I’m going down by will wood, or don’t stop (color on the walls) by foster the people.
Favorite image: all of them lol but these two are really really good. Also the one where she’s blowing her nose on edgeworth’s cravat lmao

The dream I had yesterday.
I was playing a game that starts off with the player character needing to get over-the-counter throat medicine. But you have to go upstairs into the offices to find out what it's called from a magazine that is in one of the 'checking you out' rooms before the offices are properly open. So it's all lights off upstairs. But you eventually find the ad or article, write it down in your notes, and go back down to the entryway to get your order.
In one of the other lines is a guy that is just finishing up and paying for whatever he got. Which happens to be some kind of super fancy expensive medicinal tea with noticeable packaging. The customer leaves just as you finish climbing back down the stairway.
Anyway, after getting your very specific throat medicine, you also leave and enter your car. Turns out it's a detective game of sorts and your case is regarding a serial killer that you've been tracking for some time now... And then the scene changes to a second playable character, a lawyer, who works criminal cases. As the lawyer you get your clients found not guilty, but fail to 'Ace Attorney' out who the real villain is during court.
Eventually the two gameplay styles merge together. Because while you're playing the lawyer they get gotten by the big bad evil guy of the game. And the detective gets his case because it looks to be linked to the previously-mentioned serial killer. Anyway, during your investigation you come across a piece of torn packaging that 'looks a bit familiar'. Some more scenes and stuff happen, but I can't go into better detail about them because they were part of a montage.
But the murderer is getting sloppy. They dropped a list. And you recognize the names. So it's off to a drive while hoping you arrive before something terrible happens. You do. Turns out the detective you've been playing is Dick Gumshoe. And you've just arrived at a meeting between Miles Edgeworth and Nahyuta Sahdmadhi. You quickly explain the situation and escort them to a safe house.
In time you do catch the culprit. Turns out it was the other customer from the very beginning of the game. The same guy that happened to be the prosecutor during the lawyer gameplay, too. That torn piece of packaging matches the intricate details from that expensive medicinal tea. And, apparently, there had been traces of that same tea throughout the various crime scenes. Plus the handwriting from that list matches, too. That was some of the big evidence, and there was more evidence stuff but I forgot what it was.
...And then I woke up.

I have hit Post Limit so I am responding here:
So Lupin the Third:
This is an Adult series written specifically for Adults. It's crude, sexual, and violent. It is also complex and heartwarming and MOST OF ALL: IT'S HILARIOUS
Lupin III has the slapstick flirty hilarity that original Loony Tunes has but for more adult audiences. Lupin definitely has a joy of life and mischievous Buggs Bunny energy to him.
Arsene Lupin III is the third of a line of master thieves. This manga from the 60's (technically ongoing) and anime from the 80's is (very very very very loosely) based off of the french Arsene Lupin stories where Famous detective Herlock Sholmes chases after the titular master theif who bests Herlock on many occasions. (Originally it was Arsene Lupin v Sherlock Holmes but that was a very early and famous case of IP/Copyright and his name was changed).
Lupin's partners Jigen Daisuke (half Italian and half Japanese raised in NY half his life) and Goemon Ishikawa XIII (descended from a Samurai theif from IRL history) work with him to pull off incredible capers.
Goemon is a master swordsman with yakuza history and Jigen is a master marksman with mob history.
Lupin is in love with Fujiko Mine another master theif (imo) who is the femme Fatale of the series. She's sometimes a member of the gang and sometimes not. Lupin will do almost anything to get into her pants and she uses that to her advantage regularly to manipulate him into stealing things for her. She's sort of similar to Nami from One Piece in a lot of ways.
Zenigata is the intrepid Inspector/Detective thats chasing after our titular theif and his gang. He's a lot like Gumshoe from Ace Attorney. He's sweet, and deeply cares about Justice and Lupin is his Arch Rival. His luck is terrible and his pay is low but the people that love him are very loyal. He will chase Lupin to the ends of the earth. He's a major comic relief character even in the more serious entries.
Hayao Miyazaki worked on Lupin III in the second half of the first arch Green Jacket and the movie Castle of Cagliostro was his first big movie break. They're beautiful to watch and very heartwarming and he had a lasting effect on the media canon.
A lot of this information will be repeated in the video essays I'm about to reccomend but honestly she'll do a WAAAAY better job of singing this series praises than I will.
Check out the video essays by @infinitesnowpro (Infinite Snow Productions on youtube).
Her essays -Miyazaki's Lupin- and - The Mystery of Mamo (Will be in the Criterion Collection) - are fantastic and the Miyazaki Lupin video confirmed some of my suspicions about Green Jacket.
She goes over good places to start in the video but if you want a small taste : Lupin the 3rd The First is on Netflix I believe. It'll give you an idea of what the characters are generally like.
Some of the series is on TMJ's official YouTube. They actually put a lot of their stuff on their channel for free. Not just Lupin stuff.
My favorite arch is Red Jacket the second arch but I watched Red Jacket for the first time back in the mid to late 00's so it'll always have a special place in my heart. ❤
If you like funny cops vs robbers type storylines and like a lot of the tropes of detective or heist media I think you'd like it. It's a very fun watch.
It's infinitely memeable and there's a ton of hilarious shorts compilations and soundbites floating around the internet.
The music is fantastic btw. There's compilations on youtube thst are like an hour or more in length under funny names that reference memes and they're nice to listen to while doing housework. -It's a beautiful morning and you're a Terrible Theif- or -A five minute egg cooks in 5 minutes- etc.
Bonus: As a series for adults with adult characters it will appeal to Middle Aged Men Enthusiasts so even if that's all anyone takes out of it I've still done my job promoting it. o7
sounds cool as fuck 👍

Pairings: Miles Edgeworth/Phoenix Wright, Phoenix Wright/Dahlia Hawthorne Rating and warning(s): T (Teen and up); contains spoilers for Ace Attorney Trilogy, specifically games 1 and 3 Words: 2656
“Detective,” he asked Gumshoe as he was about to leave the room. “What is this?” “It’s a letter, boss,” he said unhelpfully. “Looks like personal mail. Kinda weird that someone wrote to you here, huh?” After five years, Miles receives a letter from Phoenix again.
A bit late for unnecessary feelings day, but please take this

I have a few AUs, plot bunnies and OCs related to various parts of the Ace Attorney series but not the time or energy to share them in detail, yet. But someday I might ramble extensively about...
- Meili Lin, Zheng Fa's Secretary of Foreign Affairs who is running to be the next President of Zheng Fa. She is a rare Reasonable Authority Figure in the Ace Attorney verse
- Klaus Gavin, uncle to Klavier and Kristoph Gavin, a prosecutor and songwriter who believes duty and family are equally important
- Erik van Zieks, descended from Barok van Zieks, a prosecutor and pianist who went to law school with Klavier and has a strong sense of justice
- Jay Walker, a retired detective turned auto mechanic who taught Gumshoe everything he knows about gadgets
Each of my OCs ties to a specific fan case/AU I thought up and I really want to share these scenarios with y'all when I get the chance.
Ace Attorney has inspired me and it feels great to have the creative juices flowing!
And I have a feeling there will be more ideas on the horizon as I play through the series and for my thoughts on it.

AAIC Launch Trailer
This is the 81st and truly final post in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Countdown: 0 days left until release aka release day!
Today's topic: the Launch Trailer for the Investigations Collection!
Surprise! I know I said the previous countdown post would be the last one but we got another trailer specifically for the release of the collection and I just can't not comment on it!
youtube
And what an epic trailer it is! It essentially goes through all the major characters in the story, introduces them and their role and gives a little snippet of what they're like with one line or a little scene. I especially love all the titles the characters are given, they're an absolute goldmine! Since the trailer has also been released in German I'm having a lot of fun comparing them.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First off is of course our favourite protagonist, Miles Edgeworth himself! "Prosecutorial Prodigy" in English, "Wunderkind der Staatsanwaltschaft" (= prodigy of the prosecution) in German; or in his younger years when he was just starting "Rookie Prosecutor" and "Neuling der Staatsanwaltschaft" (= rookie of the prosecution). I really like how they kept the same title scheme for both in German, makes them fit together even better!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we have our two most important sidekicks: Gumshoe is "Devoted Precinct Detective" and "Engagierter Inspektor des Reviers" (= dedicated detective of the precinct). "Devoted" sounds a lot stronger here and I definitely like it more even though "engagiert" is just as fitting for Gumshoe as he very much is. Kay is "Self-Proclaimed "Great Thief"" and "Selbsternannte "Meisterdiebin"" (= self-proclaimed master thief). I already talked about how much I like the change to "Meisterdiebin" in German in a previous countdown post and I still love it, it sounds so badass! In her teaser part we also get an even better look at the Haunted House projection that I mentioned in the very same post and again I'm struck by how incredible it looks! The HD chibi of all the characters are so cute!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then we get the main rivals (turned allies) of Investigations 1 under the title "Globetrotting Agents of the Law" and "Weltreisende Agenten des Rechts" (direct translation) including Shi-Long, Shih-na and Franziska. Shih-na is simply "Lang's Secretary" in both versions while Shi-Long is "Elite Interpol Agent" but I do want to point out the two teaser scenes we get. I really like the translation here, it's very accurate and still sounds wonderfully dynamic in German. I especially like Shi-Long saying "Mistkerl" when referring to the kidnapper, I hope they also keep his "bastard" line towards the end boss in I1! And that "Tja" for "Well" in the 2nd scene, they could've just left it out but it conveys exactly the right amount of unquestionable confidence Shi-Long has in this moment. It's been so long since I played AA in German that I really don't recall how good the German translation was but the more I see of it the more I'm confident that it's going to be great. And one last observation to these two scenes: I love how different all of Shi-Long's subordinates look! In the pixel artstyle they were basically indistinguishable, only some by their uniforms, but they really went to the effort of drawing several different characters for the group scenes for the HD chibi sprites. Look at them, their hair colours are different, one even has glasses and their face structures and facial expressions are different as well! I particularly like the one right in front of the Blue Badger, he's just so happy to be here 😊 Oh I just love everything about this game!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Franziska is "Internationale Staatsanwältin" (= international prosecutor) and in her younger years "Praktisch eine Staatsanwältin" (= practically a prosecutor) in both versions. (that 2nd title 😄) Her line is also translated perfectly!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Next we have the main rivals from Investigations 2 getting the title "Eindringlinge aus dem Komitee" (= Interlopers from the Comittee, also directly translated). For Justine (Verity) we get the confirmation that her "Goddess of the Law" shtick will be kept identical as her title is the same as what the fan translation always used. The German translation also keeps it literal with "Göttin des Gesetzes". Good choices all around!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sebastian's (Eustace') titles are "Winning Rookie Prosecutor" and "Siegreicher Neuling der Staatsanwaltschaft" (= winning rookie of the prosecution) with the German version again keeping it wonderfully in theme to Miles' titles. Love the connection between the two here! His teaser line is also really interesting. In English he says "Ignorance is sweet, as they say. So I'm sure most things mean sweet nothings to you." We don't have the context for this scene but I guess the joke is that "ignorance is bliss", not sweet, and "sweet nothings" is something you whisper in your lover's ear and doesn't mean what Sebastian thinks it means. That's not an expression in German though so the joke wouldn't work and to make it work the translation changes it a little bit. Translating his German line back to English directly it's "Not everyone can be of superior intellect. And single (as in unmarried) are those mentally poor." It makes no sense because he completely messes up a German proverb. Correct it goes "selig sind die geistig Armen" ("blissful are the mentally poor" meaning stupid people are more blissful/happier, going in the same direction as "ignorance is bliss"). It actually took me a minute to realize what he was trying to say because on top of using the wrong word he also messes up the grammar so that sentence is wrong on so many levels 😄 Such a great way to get that across, I love it!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Last but not least we get "Die aus Edgeworths Vergangenheit" (= Those from Edgeworth's Past) with Gregory "just" being "Miles' father" (I mean, accurate) and Ray (Eddie) being "Ace Defense Attorney" and "Attorney's Assistant" in his younger years and in German "Ass-Verteidiger" (yes, German "Ass" means "ace" in English) and "Anwaltsassistent", both direct translations. I love his teaser scene of eating a piece of paper from his notebook and saying that something here doesn't taste right, that's young Ray in a nutshell 😄
Tumblr media
And finally, a similar ending screen as the Allies & Adversaries Trailer had with several scenes floating over the screen at the same time. Still such a great look! Here I just want to focus on one scene, that of Kay saying her poetic line about the Yatagarasu ("Dark skies of evening, when no other bird dares take wing, one alone remains all-seeing!"). Stuff that's supposed to rhyme is particularly difficult to translate but I love what they made of it in German: "Zieht die Dunkelheit herauf, wagt nur EIN Vogel sich hinauf, seine allsehenden Augen auf!" I can't really translate it back into English without losing the rhyme again but it keeps the meaning and has such a nice poetic ring to it. Maybe not the most incredible poem but it's easily on the level of the English version. Oh and we also get a wonderful little rendition of Shi-Long and Shih-na's synchronized taking off of their sunglasses in HD, that's one of the best animations in AA ever! (Fitting to their synchronized finger pointing!)
In conclusion, another wonderful trailer that I can, again, talk about way too much! And now I'm really going off to play the Investigations Collection!

Welcome!
Hello there!! This is a blog where I get to be very excited about detective video games (alongside sometimes other detective media. as a treat), as well as talk/theorise about things that interest me! Asks are open and encouraged, and if you're interested in my art specifically or other socials then check out my main!
Tag system: #bunchat - casual posts/talking #bunthoughts - thoughts/theories on a particular game #bunplays - posts made about a game I've not finished #bunart - posts including my art
Below is a list of all the detective games I've played and plan to play in case you want to know what you can talk to me about! Feel free to chat about stuff that's not on the list too- I appreciate recommendations for new stuff, or it may be something I know about already! (films, books etc)
Tumblr media
Notable detective games I've played With a summary sentence + favourite character ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Dangaronpa series: Danganronpa Incredible concept and presentation, but found each case's twist easy to predict. Aoi Asahina Danganronpa 2 Improves on the original in many ways, and has the best case in the series, but the fanservice was a bit much. Sonia Nevermind Danganronpa V3 Presentation and character design the best in the series, but is held back a bit by the slow pace; I enjoyed the ending. K1-B0 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The 999 series: 999 Stellar concept, stand out voice performance from Evan Smith, and a remarkably grounded atmosphere for an Anime Game (affectionate). Snake Virtue's Last Reward Takes the interesting meta concepts of 999 and runs with them for a truly one-of-a-kind narrative, although is let down slightly by a convoluted ending. K Zero Time Dilemma I have never seen a game go so downhill so quickly in its last 20 minutes; had a blast playing, but for all the wrong reasons. Carlos ------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Ace Attorney Series Ace Attorney A classic for a reason; one of the best in the series even when compared to later entries. Dick Gumshoe
Justice for All Would be solid if not part of a series of such high quality titles. Phoenix Wright
Trials and Tribulations Absolute standout of the series, with a final case that manages to capture the very best elements of Ace Attorney. Miles Edgeworth + Ron Delite
Apollo Justice Whilst by no means bad, for me it never really reached the highs of other titles in the series. Trucy Wright
Dual Destinies One of my favourites, with a self aware sense of humour that allows them to embrace the inherent silliness of Ace Attorney. Simon Blackquill + Bobby Fullbright
Chronicles My favourite games of all time; it's like someone set out to make a game specifically for me. Herlock Sholmes
Investigations 1 Decent game, and always nice to play as Edgeworth, but one of the worst offenders of the Ace Attorney "you can't present the banana peel until you present the banana!" type problem. Miles Edgeworth ------------------------------------------------------------------------------The Professor Layton Series Generally more puzzle than detective, but I feel like they count. It takes a couple of games for the series to find its footing, but from Lost Future (my favourite) onwards, it masters the balance between an engaging narrative/larger mystery and the puzzles. The puzzle design is generally excellent, with the exception of the Katrielle Layton games, where there is a notable degrade in their quality. Incredibly charming and approachable series. Emmy Altavia, Luke Triton, Hershel Layton, Katrielle Layton
Tumblr media
Return of the Obra Dinn Absolute exemplar of the genre which uses the medium to make you BE the detective in a way a film or book can't, presenting you with clues that require you to think out of the box to solve its tough but fair mysteries. Henry Evans
AI: The Somnium Files Pleasantly surprising and satisfying murder mystery game, with an incredibly likeable lead duo and cast. Mizuki
Ghost Trick Tight, engaging puzzles based on an interesting time-based premise are supported by excellent writing, characters and art direction; the animation is a particular underrated standout. Inspector Cabanela
Professor Layton vs Phoenix Wright Although not the best of either series, Layton's gameplay works incredibly well in place of AA's typically lacklustre investigation segments.
The Sexy Brutale Groundhog day but with murder; an interesting premise and wider mystery coupled with tight puzzle design draws a flattering comparison to Ghost Trick. Trinity Carrington
Tangle Tower Excellent art, fun (fully voice acted!) characters and a decent mystery, sadly let down by a jarringly abrupt ending. Detective Grimoire
Aviary Attorney Ace Attorney but with birds; visually great, with some fun genre subversions, but I'm just not personally a huge fan of 'your choices matter' type detective games. Jayjay Falcon
The Room Series Sets out to do one thing, and does it well- good for those who are more interested in puzzles over narrative.
Her Story Interesting example of how allowing player agency in a detective game sets the experience apart from other mediums in the detective genre.
Unheard One I haven't heard people talk much about, and I don't know why; its audio-based method of providing clues is unique and interesting, and is a concept I would love to see explored further.
The Case of the Golden Idol Not as good as Obra Dinn, its clear inspiration, but fills that same role as a detective game that encourages lateral thinking; if you liked Obra Dinn, you'll like this.
The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog Was personally a little disappointed that deduction was done in the form of a platforming challenge instead of being allowed to present my own reasoning, but that isn't what this game was trying to be, and is instead carried by an impressive level of charm and a surprisingly great larger mystery. Tails

Games I plan to play: AI: Nirvana Initiative (currently playing) Outer Wilds Loco-Motive The Spider of Lanka Frog Detective Shadows of Doubt Overboard Strange Horticulture Paradise Killer Mohism: Battle of Words Rusty Lake Hotel Your Turn to Die Methods: The Canada Files Darkside Detective ------------------------------------------------------------------------------Pagedoll by dianthus-alpinus

The Blue Badger!
Somehow, this may be the first request of a character that is unambiguously fictional in the context of the work itself. The Blue Badger, as the mascot of Ace Attorney’s police department, doesn’t really exist on the same level of reality as most other Ace Attorney characters. That means the Blue Badger does not have a Ryu Number, since the Blue Badger himself, in the flesh, technically never makes an appearance.
Tumblr media
That’s probably all there is to it, actually, if I’m being honest, but since the Blue Badger is specifically a mascot, for whatever reason I’m partially inclined to give his two most prominent appearances at least some consideration.
The first is in the first game’s fifth case, “Rise from the Ashes”, where he appears as a dancing panel created by Detective Gumshoe and mostly exists to get in the way and disgust people, notably Edgeworth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second is in Ace Attorney Investigations’s third case, “The Kidnapped Turnabout”, as a costumed mascot whose true identity at certain times is important to solving the mystery of that case’s murder.
Tumblr media
I feel pretty good about disqualifying the second example on the basis that even temporarily putting aside the costume disqualifier, the person inside the costume is pretty consistently more important than the actual Blue Badger mascot himself, so it’s hard to describe that appearance as of the Blue Badger and not Mike Meekins or whoever else is in the costume.
But the first one? I mean, that kinda is what people refer to when they talk about “the Blue Badger” at that point of time, it’s identifiably unique and individual, and it’s offhandedly humanized in dialogue, so, I mean...
Tumblr media
...sure, let’s say the Blue Badger has a Ryu Number of 2. For fun, if nothing else. Gumshoe’s pride and joy can have a Ryu Number, as a treat.

Hot take on Ace Attorney Deeplore (different anon here) I think it's a convention in Ace Attorney's universe to be named based on what an oracle says about your future--like a legit one. Spirit Mediums are real, why not Oracles? They KNEW Wendy Oldbag would be a windy old bag, they KNEW Frank Sawhit would claim he saw a murder, they knew Dick Gumshoe would be a detective someday. It's just common practice when someone is pregnant or adopts an infant to go to some kind of future sighted person in order to figure out the most appropriate name. This ties into the Greek Mythology theming of the Goddess of Law and Themis Academy.
Do you think Themis is the Goddess of Law, or is it Athena?
OKAY I LITERALLY LOVE THIS. we have all made so many jokes about nominative determinism in ace attorney canon but the idea that its tradition to get name suggestions from a fortuneteller is SO fucking funny. it doesn’t always work out. when romaine letouse was born his parents were convinced he was supposed to be a vegan chef when he grew up and it never happened.
i like to imagine its pretty vague like the oracles themselves don’t know the specific theyre just like here is a list of good baby names i saw with my Dark and Terrible Powers. like baby names dot com in the ace attorney universe is a new agey psychic website where you hire someone to read your baby’s future. GOD. I LOVE THIS. YOURE A GENIUS.
i think in traditional greek mythology themis is law whereas athena is wisdom but admittedly i dont know a ton about mythology.

My mom watched me playing Ace Attorney the other day. She's seen me play it before specifically finishing up Rise from the Ashes. She didn't understand why I want to play a game with a ton of reading and she thought the character designs were bizarre which kinda brought the conversation up.
Mom: Oh you're playing that game again.
Me: Yeah.
Mom: Where's the one guy with the crazy facial expressions? One minute he was smiling and the next he was sweating bullets. He was cracking me up. (She's talking about Gant.)
Me: Oh no he's in jail. He was on trial for murder he won't be in the other games.
Mom: Isn't that the guy? (Talking about Detective Gumshoe)
Me: Oh you mean him? He's the detective so he's on the other cases.
Mom: What about the one guy? He dressed like he was from the 1800s.
Me: That was probably Edgeworth. (Googles a picture of him) Him?
Mom: Yeah him! What's with that shirt?!
