I'm glad i'm a lot more chill with hate than i was back then, i remember getting so hurt by people online and in school bullying me just because i was myself. HI i appreciate this ask a lot i don't know if i count as any paragon of kyle expertise but... well. that's never stopped me.

if you're up to oyl you're pretty far along, and i assume you'd seen a handful of reading guides that nudge you towards all of gl (1990) #48-181 and its surrounding crossovers, including zero hour (1994) and final night/parallax: emerald night (1996). i derive most of my takes on his character from this era.

green lantern rebirth and gl publications thereon are often (in)famously authored by mr. geoff johns, so i cannot in good conscience integrate most of that body of work into my belief system. that being said! it does include the buildup to ion (2006) #1-12, which, while not perfect, has phenomenal art and is also pretty key to kyle's whole ethos. the buildup to ion is the following:

green lantern: rebirth (2004)

green lantern corps: recharge (2005)

rann/thanagar war: infinite crisis special (2006)

ion (2006)

if you're not allergic to ensemble comics, he is also a frequent cast member in jla (1997) for the first 70 or so issues; it's a good place to look to see him foster relationships with other members of the dc universe (like wally, whose friendship with kyle is basically nonexistent nowadays but i have not forgotten) and gradually gain confidence as gl. some highlights include:

jla (1997) #1-7 — he's such a rookie here. he's clearly very new to the game and nervous about it, so it's a good look into how he started off and what he grew from.

Sexuality Headcanon: So extremely bisexual

Gender Headcanon: I personally love the trans Zach barn interpretation but I also do love Zach she/her butch lesbian headcanon (they can also be coupled together too. or they can be separate headcanons. the worlds ur oyster i like them both). They're both really good but like regardless this guy is Not Cis to Me there is some sort of Gender TM occuring here

A ship I have with said character: CARBARNNNNN my funny haha crackship. They can bake bread together (😏) in their little cafe in the middle of London and then do goofy little detective cases together. I also low key enjoy barnwright??? the sword innuendos are evvvverywhere barnham you need to stop flirting with phoenix for one second stop saying bread puns you absolute bisexual menace. /lh

A BROTP: not really a brotp but Rouge and Barnham are absolutely siblings to me I cannot see it in any other way actually.

A NOTP: Barnlaw... im so sorry barnlaw fans.... but they are actually worsties to me.... i need them to be haters........ also darklaws absolutely a lesbian i take no critiques on that. #evespella sweep. Also I dont really (similarly) like Barnlawspella. That seems a bit wierd Barnham did in fact throw Espella into the flames and I dont think they would be together romantically. friends maybe in the future??? sure! they would not be kissing and making out.

A random headcanon: I need him to have an identity crisis post canon actually most of my headcanons about him are post game and usually me just putting him through the identity crisis wringer. Guy who suddenly has limited support (I think that the people in the town would be a lot more forgiving, but I also don't think that his brain would allow him to realize that they are being forgiving towards him) and a Lot of people Hate him (for understandable reasons. I would not be surprised if his actions caused people a lot of unforgivable trauma) but he was also being extremely manipulated for so so so long. (which is also headcanon but its canon 2 me)

I think its really saying something that labryinthia was made for "people who wanted to forget." I dont know what Barnham wanted to forget (and personally I hc he was put into labryinthia somewhat young (12 years old ish) as an orphan) but still. I want to know what his past was like. Like imagine all of that shit that he forgot about for so long slapping you in the face right at the time where the world that he knew and physically felt was real is being deconstructed. (TL;DR. Please give Labryinthians free (and good!) therapy)

General Opinion over said character: i like himb a lot <3

Actual General Opinion over Said Character: Hes suuuch an interesting character who has a complex personality built upon his idea of what Justice is (which is entirely built by the Storyteller.) And hes such a loyal loyal guy that he sort of falls into his place in the story and becomes that person who serves justice. And then all of a sudden he starts realizing that his justice is So so wrong and that the things that he's done is BAD and then he has to learn how to cope with that with his old (probably extremely traumatizing) memories back. And I think thats really really interesting and can have so many implications.

I could go on and on about this but I know a lot of people feel that his character was cut short in the game because of him being sent to jail. But I think its really important to note how his resolve was not strong enough to go against the storyteller, and THATS why he never has his big moment during the trial. Like Eve calls him OUT... he ISNT strong enough to go against the storyteller there is still a sliver of him that is still attached to his old life and his presumption that whatever the storyteller is true. He feels that need for a metaphorical safety blanket in which all of the discord that is happening isnt actually real, and his town is safe and everything is the same as it always has been. And even if he personally wasn't a part of the trial, it does fall apart, and he does loose his normal routine and his normal life that he was used to after how many years of being stuck in labryinthia.
