Hi, jess! A couple of months ago I sent you an ask about a reality tv show (the farm) and a participant who has bpd (she didn’t win the 1 million price, btw - but she was so happy when she found out that a good portion of the public supported her, specially women ❤️ she’s famous because of only fans and most of her followers on social media, before her participation on the show, were men. So she said she was happy to see so many women supporting and following her now). Anyway while watching the show, I realized many of her behaviors were so similar to mine. Then my mom and sister, who live with me, told me they noticed that too. I decided to ask my psychiatrist and psychologist (I’ve been dealing with depression for the past 10 years), but both didn’t give it much credit. At the time I agreed with them - they said I probably don’t have bpd because the behaviors I was describing only happens when I’m home, with people I trust. I’m very “controlled” when I’m with other people, including my dad (who hasn’t lived with me since I was a kid). The point is, I’m ALWAYS making a huge effort trying to control myself in public - it’s exhausting and I believe it’s one of the reasons I tend to isolate myself. I think I’ve actually learned to camouflage my feelings and to avoid things that trigger me. I used to be more “uncontrolled” as a kid, before I created this deep rooted fear that people’d leave me because of these behaviors and reactions. Do you think it’s possible to camouflage some of bpd’s symptoms? And, if so, do you have any tips on how I could talk to my psychiatrist and psychologist about it? —— I didn’t want to make this ask any longer than it already is, but one of my childhood friends was recently diagnosed with autism. We don’t talk much nowadays, but she messaged me last month to tell me about her diagnosis and to ask if I felt I had some of the same treats - thinking retrospectively, we were very alike. It made a lot of sense and I remembered you said sth about bpd and autism sharing some similarities in some aspects of how the brain works. She also told me about recent studies showing the underreported diagnosis in women. My psychiatrist and psychologist also dismissed it, because I don’t avoid eye contact and have friends. I’m really confused right now, but it’s also kinda relieving to get to know myself a bit more and to think that the struggle I’ve felt my whole life is real. (Sorry for the long text!)

Hey :) Sorry it’s taken me so long to get back to you. Just like to be able to dedicate a bit of time to longer messages like this and I rarely have the attention span for it! But of course I remember the conversation, it was really interesting to hear about what the contestant went through.

So yes, BPD and autism are often misdiagnosed as each other as there are similar traits that are often found. Usually around attractions to patterns and structure and also around empathy. Like I don’t generally feel empathy for people in the same way most people do. I’d say unless you’re a close friend or family member - or maybe if you’re a child - I probably wouldn’t feel empathy towards you. I generally make decisions about moral standpoints and such based on what logically makes sense to me rather than any kind of emotional connection because I just don’t really feel that. I think the reasons autistic people may sometimes struggle with empathy are different but to an external person would seem very similar so can often be confused.

To address your two points that made you unsure about the diagnoses, BPD is definitely highly interpersonal so it can change drastically depending on who you’re with. I can be friends with someone for quite a while and they have no idea but if I’m in a romantic or physical relationship with someone they’ll know within a few days. Romantic relationships are my personal trigger so they’re where I struggle the most. Then in terms of autism, lack of eye contact doesn’t really mean anything. I think that’s a common misconception people have but two of my cousins are autistic and they were both very outgoing and friendly, they were incredibly tactile, I didn’t notice them not looking me in the eye but I probably don’t look people in the eye much because that feels weird haha. Women in particular are not well studied when it comes to autism as you kind of mentioned. They are generally better at “masking” and so are often misdiagnosed or their condition isn’t picked up until well into adulthood. So even if you have friends and can look people in the eye it wouldn’t necessarily mean you wouldn’t fit the criteria.

I wouldn’t want to diagnose you with anything myself as I’m not a professional and I don’t know you personally. The DSM outlines the criteria for being diagnosed with BPD. You have to demonstrate at least five of the following and as with all mental illnesses they have to cause a significant impact on your ability to carry out your responsibilities and go through daily life:

Chronic feelings of emptiness

Emotional instability in reaction to day-to-day events (e.g., intense episodic sadness, irritability, or anxiety usually lasting a few hours and only rarely more than a few days)

Frantic efforts to avoid real or imagined abandonment

Identity disturbance with markedly or persistently unstable self-image or sense of self

Impulsive behavior in at least two areas that are potentially self-damaging (e.g., spending, sex, substance abuse, reckless driving, binge eating)

Inappropriate, intense anger or difficulty controlling anger (e.g., frequent displays of temper, constant anger, recurrent physical fights)

Pattern of unstable and intense interpersonal relationships characterized by extremes between idealization and devaluation (also known as "splitting")

Recurrent suicidal behavior, gestures, or threats, or self-harming behavior

Transient, stress-related paranoid ideation or severe dissociative symptoms.

Those are the criteria that would most likely be used to assess you. In the UK we can be diagnosed with depression and anxiety by a GP but have to go to a psychiatrist or psychologist to get a PD diagnosis. It sounds like you’ve already been in contact with them. I’m not too sure how it works where you are. Can you get a second opinion? Are there other doctors you could make an appointment with? Could you go private? I’m very aware of the fact that having the NHS in the UK means that my experiences are not applicable to everyone’s circumstances but for me when I first went to get help I was given meds and a depression and anxiety diagnosis and sent on my way. When that didn’t help I went back and got a higher dosage. And then it still didn’t help and finally I was kind of at rock bottom (or I thought so at the time) and needed help and so what I did on that occasion was have a friend accompany me into the room. They had created a list of things they’d seen me do or heard about me doing that were concerning to them and gave them to the doctor, and they kind of backed me up and gave me moral support. It shouldn’t have taken someone else being in the room for me to be taken seriously but having someone there who could express what I might have been too shy or self conscious to say was really helpful. In the end I got referred for treatment and it wasn’t right for me ultimately as my problems were more complex but it helped for a bit. I don’t know if there’s anyone in your life you trust to be able to be there to support you but I think it can be really intimidating to push back with doctors and professionals and having someone there who knows you and cares about you can be the thing that gives you that extra bit of courage you need.

I’m not sure how helpful that is but I’m available if you want to ask me any questions about BPD or any explanations of how I experience the symptoms or anything like that :)

if you understand what anarchism is & feel more strongly about socialism or marxist communism, we can still be buds, depending on your reasoning, but the reasoning has to be valid. If I see/hear you repeating doctrines that castigate anarchism or denigrate anarchists as a collective, I won’t engage, if I can stop myself, and I will not forgive you until you come to me in a personal way and ask for that forgiveness, after making a believable & sincere apology.

if you are a liberal, or a frickin repub, still? we can't be friends & I don’t trust you: you're a danger, not just to me, but to life, all of life. If you’ve called me a “bot”, you would have to ask me for forgiveness for there to be a chance for connection. You would have to understand the harm you caused by repeating that shit. There are worse things on this site that impacted me personally, but they’re so messed up I can’t type about them without getting seriously upset.

I can probably forgive you for voting for the dem this year? (people do horrible things when they are afraid) but you would have to ask for that.

When you’re a teacher, refusing to help bullied kids is child neglect, often involves gaslighting/victim blaming, and is traumatising for the kid

Bullying is a traumatising situation. If a child is in your care, and you know that they’re going through something traumatising, you have a duty to attempt to help them.

If a child reports bullying and you brush them off, accuse them of lying, or suggest that they change their behaviour/appearance/whatever the bully is targeting them for instead of attempting to deal with the situation, that tells the child that they deserve the bullying. It also makes it more difficult for them to trust adults, especially teachers, in the future.

When I was in year 7, I was being bullied by a girl in my class. The bullying was both verbal and physical. I told my year advisor, because in my school it was generally accepted and taught that she was the person you should tell. I told her on several occasions, in fact, because none of these attempts seriously stopped the problem. It was years ago so I might be forgetting some incidents, and they’re probably not in chronological order, but these were her responses:

-At first she organised meetings to get us to sort out our differences, completely ignoring me when I tried to explain to her that I was ignoring the bully as much as I could and it wasn’t a two-way issue

-When she finally realised it was actually bullying, she changed our “groups”. “Groups” at my school were a thing where the year 7 & 8 kids had the sit with the same four people in every class to “help us make friends” which is a stupid system but whatevs. Anyway, she changed it so that she wasn’t obligated to sit with me anymore, but still could if she chose to. In doing so, the year advisor put me in a position where if the bully sat with me, I couldn’t move because I had to sit with my group.

-She told me to tell the classroom teachers repeatedly, despite my protests that (1) the classroom teachers weren’t taking it much more seriously than she was, and (2) they might be able to stop it for a few minutes or even the rest of the lesson, but they didn’t have the power to do anything long-term.

-Related to the above point, she initially refused to believe me when I said she was bullying me in class time because “you’re supposed to be in class in class time”. Like, newsflash, the classroom doesn’t stop her from bullying me.

-At least once she said she would talk to the bully. I was overjoyed, especially when the bully was called out of class, but ... nothing happened. Presumably either she denied the entire bullying (and the year advisor believed her, which is just dickish), or she pretended she had genuine intentions to stop and got off with a warning. This was purely a verbal lecture, no suspensions, no detentions, likely not even threats of future punishments. No other action was taken until I fought back months later, at which point we were both suspended, but I don’t want to talk about that.

-At one point I broke down crying because it had been continuing for months and she hadn’t stopped it, at which point she forced me to talk to the counselor to work out ways to deal with my emotions. She made no attempts to get me to see the counselor about it again, so it’s clear that she wasn’t trying to look after my mental health. She just wanted to make it seem that the problem was “girl blames year advisor for her own inability to cope with emotions” and not “year advisor refuses to help bullied child”

-And, the thing that really takes the cake: She told me to get a thicker skin. I came in, to politely ask her if she could maybe do something about the bullying problem she had been fully aware of for several months because it had now gotten physical, and she told me to get a thicker skin.

The way she brushed me off hurt me as badly as the bullying itself. I felt ignored and dismissed by the people who were supposed to be responsible for my safety. I felt like I deserved the bullying.

Now I’m at a different school, with different teachers. My year advisor is literally the best teacher in the world, I trust her enough that I volunteer to help her demonstrate things in class, and I feel like I could talk to her if I had a problem.

I’m being bullied again, in a totally different situation -- it’s several people in my year group instead of one person, it’s mostly social/verbal instead of physical, and despite justifiably feeling attacked and uncomfortable in class, I don’t feel scared for my physical safety. This has been continuing for slightly over a week, and I haven’t made any attempt whatsoever to tell a teacher.

It’s not that I’m scared to tell people, because I’ve told my mother and several of my school friends, many of which are in positions of power (the school’s equivelant to prefects/the SRC). The problem is that SRC kids/prefects don’t actually have that much power, and none of them are able to help me without getting a teacher involved.

And the thing is, I trust my year advisor. I genuinely feel like, if I told her about this, she would do everything in her power to help me. But I’m finding it incredibly difficult to talk to her, and part of the reason is that I have that fear left over from what happened in year 7.

Also something to keep in mind is that bullies WILL bully you more if you “snitch” on them. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t tell an adult, because if the adults are competent and moral people then they will do what they can to stop it. But if you’re in a situation like I was in where the adults do nothing, then you will experience all the added stigma/consequences of being a “snitch” without actually having the problem solved.

Combine that with having a fear of teachers due to past trauma, as well as social anxiety and autism that make any interactions difficult, and I’m left feeling like telling a teacher will take a huge amount of emotional effort, make my current situation worse, and not actually help in the long run.

(BTW, I’m not asking for advice for my current situation. I’m not trying to make you feel like you should help me, I just included my story so people would understand how this impacts kids)

Refusing to help a bullied child is traumatising in and of itself, and is traumatising even without the added consequence of the child being forced to stay in the traumatising bullying situation.

As teachers, you have both a moral and legal duty to protect these kids. Allowing kids to be traumatised in your care is neglect. Telling traumatised kids that they “need to grow a thicker skin” or making them think it’s not a big deal is gaslighting and victim blaming. Teachers that do this should be fired.

And before teachers try to argue that “well I can’t read minds” and “the kids need to tell me if somethings going on”: Well, first of all, they don’t. If you don’t know, then that’s not your fault. But if you can see a problem in your classroom, you should make an effort to ask the kid who seems to be the victim if it’s bullying (you should ask because it may just be part of a game they’re playing, but don’t ask the possible bullies, because they’ll obviously lie to protect themselves). Refusing to take action until kids tell you themselves (which can be extremely difficult if they have social anxiety, and they’re more likely to have social anxiety if they’re bullied, or if they’re autistic, which makes them more likely to be targeted by bullies) is holding their needs hostage.

But if you’re genuinely not aware of the problems -- either because you rarely/never have the kids in your actual classroom, or they’re careeful to only do it when your back is turned -- then congrats! This post isn’t about you. This post is about teachers who outright refuse to help bullying victims in ways that are almost always child neglect and often have elements of gaslighting or victim blaming.

my life in a nutshell (or twenty damned paragraphs because ‘brevity, what is thou?’)

so i’m ill. my joints and muscles are flaring up with pain again. i’m getting constant migraines. my vision keeps blurring. i can’t walk more than twenty paces before my legs feel like jelly spaghetti. my forearms are nothing but shooting pains along the nerves which is n o t f u n. and i am suffering something awful with ibs (irritable bowel syndrome), alternatively known as The Time of Farts That Kill and Three Hour Toilet Escapades.

i went to my job centre appointment today with my sick note. got that copied and they’re sending it off because i refuse to send it in the post when a) i can’t make a copy of it and b) if it gets lost in the post, they’ll blame me. because it’s sent internally, they can’t accuse me of anything.

i received a letter from uc saying i’m no longer entitled to ANY payments from them because of the sanction they gave me - a 2.5 month long sanction btw.

i need to call them up and demand request a mandatory reconsideration because they’re really dragging this out now and i feel like just slitting my fucking wrists ffs. i don’t even want to call them. the very idea of just waiting for them to answer me on the line, telling them the circumstances, listening to the faux fucking ‘sympathy’ that’s really ‘judgement’, and being left in limbo even fucking more... i’d rather rip my own skin off and it’s really fucking tempting right now (my skin is itching for me to do so fucking fuck).

i’ve signed up to this thing online where i review books and might get paid for them (not all of them tho) but like, even a £1 a review from them makes a difference at this point.

i’ve been told i can’t get another eye test through the nhs because my last one was too recent (tho since they keep sending me letters about it i have no fucking idea) and so i’m stuck with this single pair of glasses that i don’t think are as helpful as they were.

i’ve stopped taking my amitrypline medication because the side effects were horrific and i felt more unstable on them than i’ve ever felt before in my life. i don’t know if they’ve caused some of the stuff i’m experiencing now but i recently noticed that i keep getting a tingling sensation in my face, sort of like pins and needles, and there’s a significant decrease in sensitivity on the left side of my face compared to the right.

i’ve had numbness and tingling issues for years now but the hypersensitivity i have from being autistic sort of counters it to some degree because, when i’m asked “can you feel that?” and the doctor pokes my leg, i answer “yes” because i still sort of can. even when i’ve mentioned “i feel it less though” it’s like it’s just something irrelevant and to be dismissed.

idk if anyone has followed me long enough (or cared about my personal life tbh), but about two years ago, back when i first started trying to get doctors to take me seriously, i genuinely believed that my symptoms were potentially MS related. this was before my brother’s diagnosis of fibro, so i assumed “i have a cousin with MS that zig-zags her body and the things she’s described match a lot of the things i have”. doctor i saw back then dismissed it though.

i’ve tried to contact my rhuematology specialist to sort of my medication and, maybe, see if there’s anything to my worries about this. but i s2g, if i get dismissed again i might scream. i mean, i’ve never had an MRI. when i asked for one two years ago, i was told point blank “we won’t waste the money on you to have a scan” and i just- wtf? MRI scans are incredibly useful for diagnosing and ruling out a multitude of conditions/illnesses/injuries. not only that, but they can help reveal problems or issues that you don’t even know about that could be dangerous or harmful ffs. but it’s a “waste of money” to spend right...

still bitter about that.

mason is doing better than he was but he’s still had some bloody pee today. we think he’ll be okay but we’re keeping an eye on him. the money for his treatment came from the amazing people on here who donated and i can’t thank you enough for that! we made sure to buy additional toys and change the litter we use as well to see if that makes any difference overall. so far, i think it might be. and none of that would have been possible without ya’ll sending money so thank you from the bottom of my cold, shrivelled, cat-shaped heart.

i’m pissed off at my lecturer for what he said in monday’s class when we complained about the one-and-a-half hour long video he made us watch with no subtitles on fucking philosophy of all things. he told the class that we need to be engaging with material at this level and have no excuse to not bother to do so.

he says that in a class about disability studies.

he says that as a blind man who is disabled.

he says that in a class where i am and who he knows has a neurodevelopmental disorder.

he says one of the most intellectually ableist things i’ve heard a fucking lecturer ever say and doesn’t think there’s anything wrong with it and i just- what the fucking fuck.

fucking pisses me off so much. he already pissed me off last term with the way he worded things in private conversations after the whole ‘left classroom because group I was working with for a presentation were assholes’ thing happened. it’s so. i don’t think i have words.

or the energy.

gods but my life has gone to fucking shit lately.

OJ from Nope is Autistic and you cannot convince me otherwise

Jean Jacket deserves a place among the greatest movie monsters of all time. When my friends and I discuss Nope, 9/10 times it’s about JJ. I love JJ.

But one of the best parts of Nope, for me specifically, was OJ. Never before have I felt so seen by a character on the silver screen. Within 5 minutes of being on screen, that man struck me as autistic. In a lesser movie, that would’ve been a red flag. Typically when the spotlight is shone on us neurodivergent folk, we’re either cast in a grotesque light or as savants, which I find only slightly less insulting because it feels so insincere. That isn’t the case in Nope. OJ’s atypical perspective is important to his character and the film as a whole, but he’s never reduced to that single trait. Hell, the movie doesn’t even say it aloud, but the writing’s on the wall for those of us who can read. Nope doesn’t feel the need to clap itself on the back, which serves to normalize it all.

As a matter of fact, OJ isn’t portrayed as any smarter or dumber than the other characters; it just so happens that his modus operandi is uniquely suited to the situation at hand. It doesn’t feel contrived either, as if the stars aligned to make this minority character the savior for once instead of your average White Male Lead. He’s just a guy, applying what he knows. Even when OJ’s expertise is ignored at the start of the film by the Hollywood filming crew, no one stops to point at him and call him a freak for failing to meet their expectations. He is just a guy. So their dismissal of him is just as humdrum. That’s the reality for a lot of us. We’re not all that different from allistic people, so there’s no need to make a spectacle of it... but when we are inconvenient, however slightly, that’s reason enough to quietly drop us out of sight and out of mind with faux civility. It ties into the movie’s theme how people are eaten up and spat out without regard.

But still, OJ is never belittled for his manner. When he asks Angel to keep pivoting the cameras more and more, the nonverbal acting implies the thought may have crossed Angel's mind, but he doesn't express it aloud. When OJ refuses to abandon the horses, Emerald doesn't ridicule his commitment to the animals, to his way of life; she finds a way to work with it. OJ isn't like everyone else, but not in the ways that matter. He's a full character who happens to be autistic. He's smart, but doesn't have all the answers. He's brave, but knows better than to try his luck. He's compassionate, but acknowledges when it's too late to save someone. Major props to Daniel Kaluuya for delivering a subtle yet wonderful performance. Regardless of what anyone else thinks, OJ is one of the best, most natural depictions of an autistic man put to film.

btw it’s no coincidence one of the very few times OJ makes direct eye contact with someone, having spent the whole film not looking people in the face while talking to them, is to deliberately aggro the giant man-eating monster from attacking his sister.

Responding to a Study You Just KNOW Is Wrong

Earlier this week I participated in a Zoom session organized and hosted by David Weston of the Teacher Development Trust. David asked me an interesting question, one I hadn’t considered before. He noted that learning styles theories have become a shibboleth for educators who are scientifically “in the know;” mention learning styles in any positive way and they will pounce on you with glee. There are two problems with verbally thrashing people who say something you think lacks scientific support. First, it’s simply a bad tactic. You look like a bully and snob; sure, the flush of self-righteousness is heady, but you’re not informing the other person, although you're pretending to. You’re not even really talking to them, you’re just enjoying yourself. The second problem caused by the uncritical dismissal of disproven theories is that you might miss new developments. I’ve written about learning styles theories many times and my view of these theories has changed, (see here versus here) notably from excellent experimental work by David Kraemer, Josh Cuevas, and others. If you hear “learning styles” and immediately shout “Nonsense! Ridiculous!” without noticing that someone is providing new data in a well-conducted study, you miss things. Which brings me to a study published by my colleague at UVa, Vikram Jaswal, about which I tweeted a earlier this week.

The experiment describes an eye-tracking study in autistics who appear to be typing responses to questions on a letterboard. This sort of communication from people who cannot speak has a long and terrible history. In a previous incarnation called facilitated communication, an assistant held/supported the arm of the respondent (or in some other way touched them) as he or she typed. Research made it clear that the communication was actually coming from the assistant, although the assistant might not be aware of this influence. The story of facilitated communication has become a staple in psychology methods courses, along with Clever Hans, and it also generated interest in a particular type of unconscious social influence and the methods by which we consciously interpret the reasons for our own behavior. (Which in turn provided Dan Wegner, my colleague at UVa that the time, and a lover of puns, the chance to publish a paper titled Clever Hands.) The more recent version of this technique, employed in Jaswal's study, has the assistant holding the letterboard, but not touching the person who’s typing. This removes one way the assistant might be authoring the communication, but not all; the assistant might subtly indicate which letter is to be selected. The study I tweeted about examined eye movements and pointing in a small (N=9) group of autistics who regularly use this method. The predictions are straightforward; if you think people are responding to cues, that’s a 26-choice response time task, and RTs in that sort of task would be slow, and people would make a lot of errors. You’d also predict that they would look at the assistant fairly often. If, in contrast, you think that participants are actually typing themselves, you��d expect fluent typing, you’d expect eye movements to lead finger movements without checking what the assistant was doing, and perhaps most interesting, you’d expect that response times would be slow at the start of a new word (for a multiword response) or at the beginning of the second morpheme in a compound word (like “scarecrow”). This effect us observed in touch typists, and are due to motor planning processes. The authors claimed that the data were consistent with the interpretation that those typing were agentic—at least part of the behavior was self-generated, rather than being fully determined by external cues. It’s the first such demonstration, which helps explain why it was published in a prestigious journal. The response to my Tweet was a series of Tweets that were highly critical of…lots of things, and were reminiscent of the sort of thing David Weston asked me about regarding learning styles. I’ll provide just a very small sample of them. These two tweets suggested that the lead author (Jaswal) had an association with some people who do terrible things.

There was also a good deal of discussion about the fact that facilitated communication has been discredited…which the introduction of the paper points out, and which draws the distinction between the method they use and facilitated communication. All of these tweets have one thing in common: they don’t address the study. You can debate whether the researchers should have run a different study, and just how terrible some people who use this method are or aren’t, but there the data sit, waiting to be explained. Some critics did try to address issues with the data.

These two watched the video provided by the authors as a supplementary material and reckoned they could code them more accurately than the coders, who analyzed pointing and eye movements frame by frame. Coders analyzed more than 142,000 frames.

As near as I can tell, these tweeters are unaware of criteria for deciding what counts as the target of an eye movement versus gaze travelling through a location on its way to a target (dwell time > 98 ms). This next bit would be an important criticism, except this person too appears not to have read the methods section, which describes how it was determined which letter the speller pointed to.

But small sample sizes are routine in certain types of work, especially neuropsychology. If you can’t get many people with the desired characteristics, you test who you can test. You recover statistical power by administering many trials, which lets you conduct statistical analyses person by person. This is a routine method in psychophysics. But the small N is a valid concern in that it calls into question generalizability. If we take the conclusions at face value, should we find them interesting if they might apply to just a tiny fraction of autistics? I've picked out tweets that addressed methods, but for the most part, people didn’t engage with the actual study to discredit it. They attacked the experimenter and his associates, they broadly said it’s obvious this can’t work, they said the method has been discredited before. If they really wanted to shoot for the soft spot of this study, they should have gone after things like the calculation of the simulation of the percentage of points to correct letters preceded by a fixation of that letter if fixations had been random—that was used as a baseline for the analysis that supported a key conclusion of the study, and the method the authors used is probably open to debate. Now, what do I really think of this study? Of course this study should be replicated, and ideally in a different lab. That’s always the case; researchers may have made a mistake, equipment have been flukey, who knows. Equally obviously, the data are consistent with agency, nothing more—it’s not a test of whether a therapeutic technique or a communication method work. It’s also not a test of whether there was absolutely no influence by the assistant holding the board. The authors note that there certainly was…she sometimes finished words or interrupted, sort of the way speakers do. Their claim was that the data can’t be explained by influence alone. Back to my conversation with David Weston about learning styles. When we feel sure we know something, disconfirming data pose a problem. You have three choices. The first of the three is the worst, and it’s mostly what we saw here; you castigate the study as terrible and obviously stupid but don’t provide any substantive evidence regarding problems with the method, analysis, or interpretation. The second is to engage with the substance of the research and critique it. But that takes a lot of time and expertise. We saw some attempts at such criticism here, and we saw transparent failure to actually read the study, as well as lack of expertise. Which brings me to the third response. You have a feeling the conclusion is probably wrong because it conflicts with a whole lot of other theory and data. But you don’t know the particulars of what’s wrong with this experiment. So you ignore it. Lest you think I'm suggesting that people just shut up, I'll tell you that I respond in this third way all the time. I see a study that I think doesn't square with a lot of other theory and data and I think "that's probably wrong." And I ignore it. If someone replicates it or if the study becomes a big deal, I'll get worked up, but not before. It's not bad poker, folks. A hell of a lot of studies don't replicate, as we all know. I'm guessing the critics of Jaswal's study would say they can't ignore this study because the stakes are so high. It's my perception that there's no little indignation in many of these tweets. As in every education debate I've seen, each side feels that they are motivated by what's best for students whereas the other side is motivated by greed and evil, filtered through stupidity and stubbornness. Which brings me back to the start of this blog. I suggested that pleasure lies behind the righteous indignation people apply to the learning styles issue. Emotion was at play here. It wasn’t positive emotion in this case, but the outcome was the same. Nobody learned anything, and nobody was convinced.

For Example, I recently visited a friend who was in a local hospital in my area that has expanded to include the following...A boardwalk with HUNDREDS of exclusive shops (required a trolly inside it was so huge!), marble fountains and floors and glass elevators and railings, live TV shows in their own Greenhouses and celebrity kitchens, multiple conference centers complete with reflecting pools, grand pianos and atriums with full size trees indoors, a pediatric wing that was bult to look like a giant tree house, complete with Tree shaped doors, private rooms with twenty foot long leather couches that curve along the wall for visiting relatives, 72 inch plasma TV's in the room along with Xbox, and complete cable/internet access, Floor to ceiling bay windows for a panoramic view of the gardens and lakes on the property. Now my friend could NEVER have afforded to stay in a hotel this nice, and couldn't pay for health coverage either. Thank God she qualifies for to be insured thru a medicaid program that covers this...but who is paying for all this excessive stuff? The taxpayers in the United States. Ive had my normal license (California) for 3 years and just got my motorcycle license. I am looking to buy a street bike, a sport bike specifically.
