Ayo, someone by the name of Curly-B-Blog is redlining art of yours from 2020 (while pretending that it's actually Sai Scribble's work), and kind of being a dick about it. just thought you should know.

You know, originally I was just gonna brush it off, but then I went back to look at my old SU art from 2020 and did so much self reflection from then till now.

I think this was around the time I was just learning how to do perspective and tried to use the perspective tool on Procreate for the first time? :0 and I remember telling Sai “Sai I have this STUPID idea, I CANT believe it this stupid joke it’s so DUMBBBB, it’s living rent free in my BRAIN I SWEAR THIS IS GONNA BE SO STUPID DCIUWHEFIUWHIRFUIW4F” and being super excited to show her the finished product. People still think Sai created the Cursed Skin Gloves comic and I think it’s hilarious wjhwnuhwijwuiw

The comic was received very well and it made LOTS of people laugh and I’m still proud of this comic to this very day! :D and tbh if it wasn’t for my obsession for Sai’s Switcheroo AU I never would have found my passion in comic work! (love you you stinky hoe @saiscribbles 🩷)

HOWEVER…. I definitely still had lots to learn! I wasn’t very good at perspective at the time I’ll admit, but I was definitely having lots of fun learning :3

And throughout the past 4 years, ALOT has happened.

I graduated from college with TWO fancy pieces of expensive papers in Visual Development in Animation and Illustration learning from Will Kim and Jeff Soto, and as a I was working with the funny voice man Cougar MacDowall as a comic/story artist and reached in total around 7 million views for my fan series FNAF Security Malware Breached (it was even #21 on the trending list around the time of my birthday 🩷 what a lovely gift), had an insane opportunity to work with Mike Geno and with the voice cast from The Amazing Digital Circus for a fan song as a background and character asset artist, Vivienne Medrano liking and sharing my silly Overlord Husk AU comics, currently on my route to getting my certificate from Aaron Blaise’s Character design program and graduating from Marc Brunet Art School, and now I am completing my first year as professional colorist and art assistant for my storyboard and comic mentor Michelle Lam, aka Mewtripled! (Also I’ll be heading out to Lightbox Expo 2024 on October 26 with Michelle and the team so if y’all ever wanna meetup hahahajaj wink wink wink wink wink)

So you can say I learned ALOT and I enjoyed every minute of what I do :D I try to be humble about my accomplishments because blah blah being humble good yes yes but this time I wanna be selfish and say HELL YEAH I DID ALL THIS!!! AND IM SO EXTREMELY PROUD OF MYSELF FIUGEIURGERGGRS

Anyways moral of the story:

Learn from everyone and everything! Yes, even then mean ones too! If you can learn to work with anyone, I promise you’ll get to where you want to be faster. People can be a little mean on the internet, but that shouldn’t stop you from being where you want to be in the future. I’m so EXTREMELY grateful for all the opportunities and to all the kind professionals who were willing to give me a chance. Seriously, I’m so graciously thankful for everything, and I hope everyone here will support me and my silly little comics I will do now and in the future!

And one more thing:

Don’t be a jerk. Be to be nice to everyone :D nothing good comes out when you’re bad to everyone.

Textile Time: House of Dragons Season Two Opening Credits

It took nearly 2 years for House of Dragons to come back to us and yes, this post is a bit late with only one episode left of the season 😬 but I’m trying to embrace the "it's better late than never," and I'm working on being an im-perfectionist these days, so here we go.

A rush of excitement ran through me like an electric jolt as I heard the first notes of epic opening credits theme.

I settled in on the couch and to my utter delight, I saw not the expected template of blood spreading rapidly while fueling the mechanical architectural map of last season and GoT but a fabric becoming blood stained as it is digitally embroidered, threading a chronicle of Targaryen history (updated throughout the season) and expanding before our eyes.

What makes the new opening credits so stunning beyond the Targaryen content is the method in which the captivating digital embroidered effect, coined “threadification,” is executed by design studio yU+co’s 3D division. Kudos for taking a medieval art and a modern art form and created a striking Medieval-esque masterpiece.

The success of which can only be credited to the commitment in understanding the threading process and how it could be transformed into a digital media.

I embroider myself and am self-taught. It was something I picked up more than a year ago, so this truly hit the spot for me.

Research pays off

yU+co’s design team studied the embroidery process from the Game of Thrones Tapestry and examined the Apocalypse Tapestry. It comes as no surprise that the GoT show runner would pitch The Bayeux Tapestry as inspiration for yU+co. 

The Bayeux Tapestry is not a tapestry!, it is a 1,000 year old embroidery narrative depicting the series of events leading up to the Norman conquest of England in 1066, fought between William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and Harold, Earl of Wessex, later King of England.

Using this real world pictorial testimony of medieval war as a guide for the House of Dragons opening scenes only adds to the credibility and stellar execution.

Now a confession -

I was only this many years old when I found out about the existence of the Game of Thrones Tapestry😳. I thought I was a fan.. but apparently I was living under a rock because how did I miss this amazing piece of GoT content and art???!?

I believed the new opening credit sequence was completely original, as in no embroidery existed in the GoT world until HoD’s season two opening. Nevertheless, the opening credits are still amazing, still impressive, still educating people about the middle ages and how not dark they were.

Embroidery vs Tapestry

Magaret Wade Labarge in her article, "Stitches in Time: Medieval embroidery in its Social Setting," defines embroidery as:

"..the art of applying decoration by needle and thread to the surface of a piece of woven cloth, usually called the "ground." It is an optional decoration worked after the while weaving process, including the dyeing and finishing, has been completed."

When we look at the Bayeux Tapestry we clearly see the richly colored stitches embroidered on top of a cloth. The “design” is independent of the weave.

So why does this misnomer matter? Because knowledge is power or maybe not, but you never know when this topic will come up at a dinner party or when you might bump into Chris Helsworth.

But really why should you care? First of all, it's important not to take things at face value, like The Bayeux Tapestry. And also this visual record is an extraordinary piece of history. Do you know how difficult it is to find textiles that survive, let alone in this condition?

The Norman Conquest was a big deal in European History. French speaking Normans ended up conquering England, Scotland, Wales, Ireland and even got to Southern Italy and Sicily! And, in doing so, they brought a wealth of new words, thousands of which are still used by us English speakers today.

Hobby’s to pick up:

Okay, if I’m being honest. I am very inconsistent with my hobbies. I end up dropping them all. But having hobbies and activities really help you in multiple ways. Finding new friends, learning new things, disengaging from electronics. (I see y’all) so here are a few hobbies to look into. Some of them ive tried/been trying to get into. And these are the ones I’m most consistent with. :)))

Crochet

Crochet or knitting is so calming. And really not that expensive. It’s simple to learn. And you can do it over playing some music. Let me know if there’s any crochet tutorial accounts you’d love to know!

Drawing

- ah. This one is simple. Many tutorials available. I’d say, begin with finding out your art style. Experiment. Go crazy. You can trace some drawings first, as practice. Slowly move on to actually drawing. And remember, be creative. Finding your own art style is so important and influences how good your drawing may come out.

Learning a new language

This one is fun. Duolingo…my best friend right now. I’m doing French. It’s a beautiful language, and after a while of learning French. (3 weeks) when I’m listening to songs I can understand some parts. I also find it so entertaining comparing them to English words and how they link. 21 days forms a habit. So, doing duolingo. Kind of an habit now.

Embroidery

Again, calming. It’s beautiful to see how the images end up. And it’s more fun when you draw your own images. Really cheap I believe, varying from where you’re from. But making pillows, frames and little pieces is so lovely with embroidery.

Writing/ Poetry

This one is good and interesting as a hobby, personality trait. And for your mind. Training your brain to express its thoughts in different words, sequences and hidden under other meanings. Is so beautiful.

Digital scrapbooking

My instagram is filled with these. Actually, I only have one post. But it’s a digital scrapbook. Using CANVA and 17v28 to make these scrapbooks are so fun. Not messy, and so easy.

Dancing

Not only does it look snazzy. Dancing has so many health benefits. Hip Hop to ballet to jazz. Now I think about it, I miss being a dancer.

Reading

Be a book warm, have no shame about it. Really. Let me know if you want some book recommendations. Books take you into another world, let you view things. It’s trust beautiful when you find the right kinda book.

Creating a tumblr blog

I just started this. It’s fun though. That’s all I can say.

Fashion Designing

I sewed a shift dress. Well, kind of. It’s so fun making clothes. Although, fashion design was a school subject. It’s very fun to do. You can remake clothes at home. Turn an old skirt into a shirt. Go crazy. (Btw, when you take classes you start noticing fashion design features in your clothes. I noticed seam allowances, overlocking.)

Learning to play an instrument

I’m guilty of picking and dropping instruments. Currently, it’s guitar for me. I was really good at clarinet, and eh and piano. But now, I’m going back to guitar. Learning and instrument has many benefits. Study wise, talent wise, im pretty sure mentally too!

Normal Scrap Booking

Same thing as digitally. Just pulls you away from the screen ;)

Photography.

Capture those moments. Cherish them. Post them. Print them. Annotate them. Write about them. Just capture them.

Sometimes I come across your blog and art. You amaze me everytime. The lines are steady but flowy, shapes have form and function, and the feel of it all is unapologetic. Remarkable.

It reminds me of marshmallows, and tea with milk and honey in a spoon. It's a beautiful feeling, and atmosphere.

Everytime you draw a character, you nail it everytime. And I have a request. I don't believe you have such thing as "ugly" drawings, so I ask you.

Could you share some doodles or art you weren't especially proud of? I think it would be a marvelous thing.

truthfully i struggle a lot with perfectionism in art. if something doesn't meet my own standards fast enough i become frustrated and usually end up scrapping everything... a habit/mindset im currently still healing from. so a lot of my self-deemed unsightly sketches (especially digital ones) are lost to the void unfortunately.

so instead here's a piece i never liked. it's my first d&d character! i love her to bits, though i never could get her portrait right for some reason (perhaps the rigidity of the pose? the aloof expression? idk). i was really into crosshatching at the time lol.

hopefully this satisfies your curiosity! perhaps ill start making a habit of posting more unrefined drawings hehe

with the release of the FRNDShip RWBY Zine, i'd like to offer up my piece that i worked on for this project! it was a lot of fun workin with everyone n vibin during this and trying out some new art techniques n stuff for this one!

lots of firsts here. first time drawin mercury n emerald, first time doin a four person piece, first time trying a fightin scene in the background. it was a lot of work, but it was fun! and im happy with the result we got goin on here!

Honestly ive kinda been drawing all my life! I hope that doesnt sound dumb cuz obviously almost everyone drew pictures when they were kids, but i know that it’s been a consistent hobby for me since i was little. By the time i was in 3rd grade I was hoarding notebooks to draw in. Cuz that’s something fun about me: i had a real huge habit of drawing in things that werent sketchbooks. Through middle school and beyond I did buy/receive sketchbooks, but I started out with various kinds of notebooks. One I had from like 2nd grade was like a hardcover, stationary-type notebook that I drew cats in lol, and I have 2 velvet lisa frank notebooks from 3rd grade. In high school and college I had a really bad habit of drawing in the margins on my notes and on handouts the teacher/professor would give. Those classes where the prof just prints out all the notes beforehand and gives them to you to follow along? Oh man, I spent so many classes barely listening while I drew on them! I also used to draw on my physics homework and tests and sometimes I even got extra credit for them (thank you jeff :D). I actually have a folder of various drawings I’ve kept from that 8yr time period and a lot of them are on classwork 😂

Obviously, I’ve been doing a lot of digital art lately, which I’m sure is what u were more curious about rather than the shit about drawing on my homework. I got a surface pro as a graduation gift in 2016 bc prior to that i had a wacom tablet and a janky ass laptop, so the gift was kinda a 2-in-1: i can do schoolwork AND art easily! i like digital art a lot and honestly im still learning new things abt it every time i draw. I use Leonardo currently (i’ll skip that story) but I started out doing digital art on sketchfu WITHOUT the wacom tablet in maaaaybe 2012??? 2011??? does anyone on this site remember sketchfu? Honestly couldnt even tell u how i found that site hahah the internet was just full of wonders back in the day. RIP sketchfu. Once i got the tablet tho some time later i used sketchfu still (i think) but also gimp and krita i believe.

Oh i suppose I should mention that i took art all four years of highschool and also minored in it in college! So it’s something i did academically as well as for fun. I keep thinking about going to art school for realsies but idk. I’m already $$$ in debt from my first degree i dont feel like adding to that 😅😓

Ok now for the second part of your question: I’ve also pretty much always done fan art! Ive never really been one for OC’s, EXCEPT for the self-insert superhero double life “comics” i wrote about a poodle named Sassy when i was in third grade. And then the knock off “comics” i wrote at a later time which honestly it was weird that i did a knock off of my own thing rather than just adding them to the original or making it a spin off with at least one of the og characters. Cuz it wasnt a spin off!! But anyway there wasnt really much to any of these characters; i just needed vessels to get my weird ideas out.

So anyway yeah most of what ive ever drawn has been fan art or self portraits, because its just easier for me to take characters that already exist and bend them to my will (artistically). Well excluding art assignments in school i guess because i would usually have to draw something specific and therefore not something self indulgent. But yeah ive drawn for lots of fandoms like the earliest i remember is warrior cats. Then theres things like pokemon and warriors and random other books i read thru middle school (i used to read a LOT but now im practically illiterate); spn, sherlock, and marvel through high school; and then marvel and bttf thru the end of hs and beyond. Idk i also have always loved looking at other peoples fan art and so im like “shit i wanna do that too!”. Tho i will say marvel was my biggest fandom and the one i had the longest interest in, so that was probably where the passion REALLY came from cuz I was drawing marvel stuff for such a long time (tho not posting shdjsk u have to trust me), but ive been doing fan art forever :)

(Of course, a lot of the fan art i was making prior to recently was drawn in lined notebooks or on homework sheets or what have you, and I wasn’t posting really any of it, but i was still making it and a good chunk of it still exists. Oh i should also mention most of it was with pencils or ballpoint pens like i wasnt doing anything too fancy. There was some digital art in the highschool-college time frame but it also really wasnt…much. Honestly i barely posted any of it here but I know some of it’s on deviantart)

I cant pinpoint the exact time I started getting more “serious” about my art in general, but i know the first pandemic lockdown gave me more free time and i was less stressed about schoolwork so i just kinda had a good outlet. (Tho i will say that prior, I had been in a life drawing club for a short while, and i had also been working on a personal sketchbook project that had me pretty ~inspired~ to do art. Also i watched twin peaks around this time and it inspired a lot of Feelings and i was making funky collages and other art pieced that were sometimes related to that. Some of those are on deviantart)

Honestly I think the Big thing with my digital art was coincidentally getting back into BTTF the summer of the 35th anniversary bc the fandom here was THRIVING and i was like “oh shit wait i want to contribute!” But as i kept drawing i kept wanting to improve and that leads us to right now where im constantly trying new things (whether subtle or obvious) and challenging myself to do full body drawings with different poses, and doing screencap redraws and what have you for various reasons (backgrounds, proportions, pose, etc)

So yeah :) Basically I’ve been doing fan art forever (I didnt even get into all the mediums ive tried but that’s another conversation bc this is already so long and convoluted) and it’s kinda coincidental that ive suddenly really gotten back into it and have improved dramatically in such a short time. Hey, Galuby! I've been meaning to ask these things for some time, but how long did it take for you to figure out how to draw via digital art? And what kind of drawing tablet do you use for it? I'd like to eventually take a step out of the world of traditional art and learn how to do it all digitally myself (though I may have to wait a while before I can afford it due to college), but I'd also like to hear your thoughts and advice on the matter if that's okay with you.

I`m still figuring out how to do digital drawing, and i learn something every day, it was, of course, a really intimidating step to give, out of the comfort zone of traditional art, but bro, that was the most exiting thing about it.

Another thing is, buddy chum fella, where there`s a will, there`s a way.

I don`t draw with a drawing tablet, I use a Samsung Galaxy 5 my aunt gave to me because she fucking rocks and didn`t wanted it anymore:

Things is, it doesn`t matter which tool you use, what matter is the artist.

Trust me, getting a drawing tablet has always been my dream, i had to wait a looooooooooooooooooooooong time to get one, and worked my ass to get it too.

I went to my uncle`s house in Missouri a few weeks ago and stayed there for six months, taking care of my cousin, saving money to get one and now finally FINALLY GOT ONE! It`s an Intuos i haven`t used yet because now that i`m back home there`s not space for it here, but i will save some money and buy a desk ;). It wasn`t easy to get it to work tho, we had many MANY technical problems, i even had to wait more to buy a new laptop and get it to work, and yeah, is ready for use now.

Sorry for that ramble abt my life but I wanted to get a point. You will need patience, if you can`t afford it right now save and wait. If you have a way to learn the basic now THEN LEARN. And practice a lot. Pay attention in art streams, see what the artist does with the program, watch speed-paints that show the tools being used, watch tutorials but most important of all: MAKE MISTAKES! ALL THE MISTAKES YOU CAN POSSIBLE CAN, you will not learn from them right away (maybe) but know that if you were drawing a beautiful piece and suddenly lost it, you at least got a bit of experience! (this happened to me more than twice).

Another thing, apps and programs are different. The Medibang program is like hell for me, i will need to practice with it more.

Get a pen if you can and want If you`re willing to start with a phone bc i heard it can damage your fingers in the long run. No matter how you start, phone/mouse/tablet you WILL improve and get better tools and more skills everytime you practice.

Gilard, gillian, i don’t remember but I know it started with a G. -- Gary! But ye, the system as Kirito has always said, is fair. Cruel but fair.  SEason two is about an unfair world. A false quest with no chance to win. A lie to occupy your time. (insert bread and circuses refference and then were all like, holly fukc thats deep.. yep)... with ulterior motives.  In the end, (i haven’t re watched it yet, I’m on the second to last episode but I remember, and I’l post about it after I watch it again, but the rules are cheated right, like in  agame console sort of way hwere they take away all your agency wthorugh the oncolse of just taking your shit. right, but here lets look at it. Its basically jesus shit hacking “reality”. But here that gets deeper, because the later matrix movies addersssed that, albeit, it was not popular, and I didn’t really like it either. Is reality what we can see, touch, taste and feel... no.  Those are chemical reactions in the brain synthesizing this sensory input and then decoding these messages into some form of conclusionary understanding.  thats literally reality. A new understanding of the world. A constructed ideology about how the past beleives are bad, and that reason usually brings a great deal of violence. But eventually reason turns back into myth. Reason here is the development of what we consider to be the modern technological world, brought to this reason from myth such as ancient stories across the earth.  We have recontextualized our world.  But here in the matrix we see so clearly the archetype that so many of us recognize.  Its the reason returning to myth. Reason lied the whole time. They were lying, and wrong. Some of them knew they were wrong, but went with it, some of them, just were shits.  Pointing back to myth and the matrix,  this is the world of reason. Technology, but we see this as a common theme that I think should be looked at more closely as to the significance of it and not just philsoophical bullshit, because what we are talking about actually, is socialogy,, its the study of psychology, communication, folkloristics, history. We are studying why humans do the things they do and why and what led them to these conclusions and what can we learn from that to not fuck shit up as much in the future.  returning totopic of reason and myth, myth here is the concept of mind over matter.  When we talk about code as a metaverse, anomalies in code, you can see it in games when ai does things that are fucking wierd, like for exampel that video of the reef guard walking off the edge. Its the myth that there are aspects of this universe that we cannot fully understand just because of the sheer amounts of data. Very similar to our current physical reality.  Its the works like alphaville, .HackSign, ergo proxy, and so much more that I’m missing righ tnow, but this is.... some deep shit.  Myth is just that. A myth. but its also so much more.  See, the biggest myth of them all. The point of all of this so concisely.  The biggest myth of them all is that reason is anything but just another myth. In this sense, the archetype of reason is a lie.  The archeytpe of reason is to create meaning of the world.  But is it possible, that in our efforts to create meaning in the world, that we actually destoryed or could no longer see the actual meaning of the world. That our creation of reason and our labeling of our previous existence a “myth”. Is that not actually just a power play creating a new set of myths.  What does that say when this “reason” is completley constructed, and so fragile. thats a part of that biggest myth. Reason as the construct is not strong. Its not “reasonable” at all.  I think it would be beneficial to reexamine the myths of the past to try and understand them better. And approach them from a perspective that they might actually teach us something about ourselves.  If our reason continues to be so fragile that it returns to myth repeadetly perpetually. Maybe we should actually fucking stop and look at this shit.  Its like a bill. Eventually were gonna open one of them and then your mind will be blown and your reality shattered and you’ll be like, damn Toland, you shoulda told me that sooner, and Toland will be like, fuuuuck you, I told u so long ago you piece of shit.  and then the guardian will be like, ... yeeee......

okay back to business. let’s see. this is kind of a hard question but i’ll do my best to answer. if any other artist out there has something to add feel free to do so cause i’m probably not the best teacher but

to begin, i’d say find joy in art. 

oookay you’ve probably already accomplished this step XD but let me elaborate. art takes a lot of practice. and by a lot, i mean a lot. like, draw until your fingers fall off, then draw some more. so, try and find fun in even the most mundane pencil exercises. for instance– fall in love with the way you draw lines. get lost in the value and shading. put music on in the background that inspires you. draw things that are so fun that you could easily spend a few hours on the picture and not even notice the evening shadows lengthening and the temperature dropping. because art takes so much dedication and discipline, i think it’s easier to continue with it when you’re enjoying the absolute heck out of it. 

of course, there are gonna be areas that you kinda have to train yourself to tackle, even when you don’t want to. take hands, for example. before i understood how to draw them, they were a bane. now, though, i’m a tad more comfortable with them– and i find them to actually be kind of fun. step outside your comfort zone. it’s gonna be super uncomfy at first, but over time, it’ll get easier i promise. and when you’ve gotten to a point where you’re comfortable with it, find something else you’re iffy on and delve headfirst into it. i think that’s the quickest way to improve.

i think now’s a good time to mention references. look at references. etch them into your mind. eat, breathe, and digest them. references will help you a lot. you’ve probably heard this from every artist out there that ever lived, but draw from real life. it may be dull or uninteresting at first, but it will absolutely help expand your skills. i like to refer to this as eating your artist veggies XD not super fun at first, but once you’ve grown huge artist muscles, you’re gonna appreciate that you did it.ᕙ(⇀‸↼‶)ᕗ

i also like to think that in all stages of your art journey, learning from other artists is a good thing. find art styles that capture your heart and take inspiration from those. during my very first years as an artist, the way disney drew soft, round faces for the disney princesses was my main artistic inspiration. afterwards, in my anime phase, i discovered speedpaints done by fantastic artists on youtube and found that my artistic motivation practically tripled in size. because of those artists, i literally shook with excitement as i busted out my colored pencils– and eventually my digital tablet!! so yeah, feel free to learn from those artists. just be aware of the line between “learning from” and “copying”. many artists are very sensitive about this so yeah be careful. ask them before you post a redraw of their piece that you did, and whatnot.

on a small note, making full use of tutorials. they’re gonna be very useful to you. and, as i mentioned before, speedpaints. speedpaints allow you to see exactly what an artist does to achieve their final results– and you might pick up a thing or two along the way!!

it’s also very important to remember to be patient with yourself. art is not a race, and it’s not a competition– but it’s kind of easy to fall into that mindset. there are gonna be people who are going to be more skilled than you, so it’s in your best interest not to compare yourself to them. in my experience, i find that this stunts art and motivation very easily. i’ve fallen into this mindset years ago, and even now i look at artwork done by my peers and feel horrible about the stuff that i’ve drawn. sadly, it’s the biggest thing holding me back right now. comparing yourself to others is not fun, and, i think, only slows down your artistic journey. so, do your best do avoid it.

and finally, this is just something i noticed as i grew as an artist and i have no idea how many artists this actually applies to but. try to understand the things you’re drawing, i guess? haha idk how to explain it but i’ll try my best. for instance, when i first started out drawing faces, in my mindset i was sketching lines that would eventually become a face. as i drew more faces, though, i developed a better understanding of their structure, of how they worked. i understood things like how eye sockets cast a lot of shadow over eyes, and that the length of the philtrum (that’s the area between the nose and the upper lips if you were wondering!!!) determines where the mouth goes. i understood that a stretched-out hand is a little smaller than a face, and that shoulders begin where clavicles end. 

this understanding of how objects work applies to many things. water is gloopy– when drawing droplets, it’s best to draw gloops. clouds are puffy, but they have shape– so the fundamentals of shading applies to them. tree tops and foliage are jagged, but those jags are leaves, so i gotta draw them in the most leafy way that i can. 

i’m sure i’m going off on a tangent laughs. what i’m trying to get at, though, is that in my opinion artists have this understanding of how the world works around them. buckle in your seat belt cause im gonna go off on a long list of examples once again (≧ω≦)

to me, artists know the visual difference between copper and silver cause they have to apply those differences to their drawings. they know how muscles work, and what hands are shaped like, and where facial features are placed because the more they understand it, the more their artistic skills benefit. those who draw a lot of machinery need to know the different parts of a car cause the more they know, the better their drawings will be. just like how an artist who draws people would find it very useful to know the human body’s muscle structure by heart. just… yeah. try and understand the things you’re drawing. i think it would help a lot.

art is hard, so attack it with everything you’ve got. cause with every drawing, you can only get better and better. if you ever have any doubts, or mental hurdles, or art blocks, remember this–

Codex Cover Description

In my Ideas and Imagery class we are to construct a Process book as our final assignment for the semester which is intended as a reflective record of our progression through this period of our development as an artist.  We have free reign to include anything we feel Inspires us, motivates us, and contributes to our art work over the course of this semester.  This is my Codex Cover for my process book.  I spent approximately 13 hours on it as the first go around I wasted 6 hours on it and I made an irreversible error which forced me to delete it and restart.  I did this entire piece in photoshop with a size 3 default brush and with a track pad.  I attempted to redo it in Adobe Illustrator as I was thinking about blowing it up larger and using a vector based software as opposed to pixels keeps the consistency of the Image no matter what size you make it.  I am unfortunately not as familiar with Illustrator as I am with photoshop and spent a couple hours trying to remake it on there but it just didn’t look the way I envisioned it.  The inspiration for this piece came from one of my favourite artists and youtubers “PeterDraws”.  He creates images with abstract crazy designs using ink on paper which I would love to learn how to do.  I believe I created a piece that lives up to the work that peter does every day and followed techniques he uses in a lot of his pieces.  Although I may never be able to do a similar piece in ink I will continue to use his style digitally as I think it is very visually satisfying for the eye.  The reason I chose to use a piece with the “PeterDraws” style is because he was actually the first artist I began to follow and who inspired me to transfer into design and pursue graphic design next fall.  His Youtube videos are very calming and help me when I feel anxious as he has a soothing voice and combined with watching his drawing process makes for a very satisfying video.  I felt it was appropriate considering he was the first artist who inspired me that a piece similar to his style should be the cover and first page of my Process Book.  Im planning on Incorporating another piece somewhere in my process book as the background for probably the final page as I like the idea of beginning and ending with the same style.  I also created this cover at the beginning of the semester so I am hoping my new piece will also show my progress as an artist over the course of these couple months.  I can also gage how I have progressed with my photoshop drawing ability based on how much time the next piece takes me as well as I feel this one took a lot longer than it should have if I was more experienced drawing digitally.  I will be posting every page I include in my process book here on my blog so I hope to see you all soon and hope you enjoyed my description of my codex cover!
