Gladly! This is my favorite DR atm it’s just great all around honestly.

Fair warning, this is a long post!

Onto my backstory!

So basically, when I was a kid a new rogue popped up with some memory-altering gas and organized a really nasty attack on Gotham. I got caught up in the attack and got my memories fully taken away. So I just kinda wandered around Gotham until Robin found me and Batman decided to take me in (my only DR with a “stable” father figure! Let’s gooooo).

I was really young, and Dick was still Robin, so I wasnt supposed to be a vigilante, but fuck than amiright? I started following them out on patrol and because of my meta abilities they couldn’t catch me. So Bat was like “fuck it, another child soldier” and BAM 2 Robins!!

Also about my meta abilities, they manifested due to the trauma from the attack I was involved in. And they’re bat-based! They were pretty subtle at first, so no one realized I had them until I started training.

Things are great, Damian joins the fam early after Talia decides to ditch her dad, Dick moves out, I break my leg, Jason joins the fam! Happy family, everything’s great, we’re thriving.

Then… BAM tragedy strikes. You really expected me to have a happy, un-traumatizing backstory? No way!

Jay and I get our shit rocked by the Joker. Thankfully, we live haha. I was able to keep us from getting crushed by the warehouse debris due to my enhanced strength. And B got there in time and called in Superman to pull us out of the wreckage.

Anyway, this event FREAKS ME TF OUT. Obviously both of us have to retire from being Robins, and I refuse to have anything to do with vigilantism or Batman. I even refused to speak to Bruce for a while.

I got some pretty nasty, very visible scars from this event. I was really ashamed of them, so I wouldn’t leave the manor or let the media see me. The public/media was told we were kidnapped by random thugs, but it was a conspiracy theory I actually died which is why I hadn’t been seen since it happened (obviously not lmao)

Few years later, Barbara convinces me to become the next batgirl after she had to retire. Night of my first patrol, literally about to leave the cave, bat signal lights. Joker escaped Arkham. Are you kidding me??? I completely flipped my shit. I refused to go out, and refused to ever be a vigilante again.

This didn’t last though, Steph and Cass joined the family and really brought me out of my shell. I helped train stephanie, which really brought back my love of fighting.

So I decided to train again, and just recently became Batgirl!

This DR has by far my angst-iest backstory, I promise I’m not always this dramatic. Onto more fun things!

Jason and I had lowkey beef with Tim at first because, cmon, we almost die and now some other kid is Robin? But don’t worry, we all get along now!

I have a scar on my forehead from where I tripped and fell face-first into the batmobile T-T

I also have a scar on my ankle from falling off a roof (this was not fully my fault, Dick was also involved LMAO)

People outside of Gotham know that Batman exists, but the rest of us? Full on cryptid energy. Best evidence is some blurry photographs, the occasional video of one of us being dumb, or anecdotes from fast food workers. There’s a whole buzzfeed unsolved episode about it.

I only recently started making public appearances again, which is fun

The majority of the family are fire signs (including myself) so that’s going to be… a fun experience hahah

I normally work at night, but occasionally I patrol with Duke during the day!

You’re curled on his couch, your feet tucked beneath you, and half empty glasses of wine that had been forgotten about hours ago nearby.

Spencer sits next to you, just a little too close but you don’t mind it. His arm lays resting on the back of the couch occasionally his soft fingers touching you lightly without him even realizing but you don’t mind again because it’s comforting, and because it’s him.

“I don’t know, I still think the whole concept of time is ridiculous.” You say, half grinning. “Who decided we needed minutes and hours anyway?”

Spencer’s eyes light up, the way they always do when a debate begins. “Well, the Babylonians first divided the day into twenty-four hours, based on their sexagesimal system. And technically, is a human construct, but it’s a necessary one.”

You scoff, leaning just a little bit closer. “Necessary for what? Stress? Deadlines?”

“Or catching serial killers.” He says, arching an eyebrow.

“I guess.”

The warmth of his smile lingers, and for a moment neither of you speak, both lost in each other.

It was a soft charged stillness, the kind that makes your heart beat a little faster. It’s also not the first time the air between you two has been like this, but it is the first time neither of you have pulled away.

Instead of acknowledging it, Spencer breaks the silence with a grin. “What’s something entirely useless that you know?”

You grin back, ready. “Octopuses have three hearts, and their blood is blue because it contains copper instead of Iron.”

His laugh is soft and genuine, your chest feels a little tighter hearing the sounds leave his mouth. “That’s fascinating.”

“And that sea otters hold hands when they sleep so they don’t drift apart.” You continued.

Spencer blinks. “Wow, that’s…that’s actually pretty adorable.”

“Right? Imagine just two little otters floating around holding hands.” You demonstrate grabbing onto his hand, locking them together. “Just like this.” You say, the both of you smiling at your interlaced hands.

“Honestly, I think I could stay up all night listening to you.” He murmurs, his voice softer. It hangs in the air like a confession. Your cheeks flush.

“Good. Because I’m not tired yet.”

And just like that, the night stretches on. You talk about everything and nothing.

Favorite books, embarrassing stories, the most ridiculous statistics he can pull from memory.

Every so often, you catch the way Spencer’s gaze flickers to your lips, or the way his knee rests against yours. The teasing grows bolder, and the laughter louder.

“Hmm, are you flirting with me Dr. Reid?” You call him out, a grin tugging at your lips.

“Statistically speaking.” He replies, his smile downright mischievous. “There’s a high probability that I am.”

You laugh, but you don’t deny how much you like the way he’s looking at you.

And then, before you realize it, the soft hue of the sun rising seeps through the windows. Spencer glances at the clock on the wall.

His eyes widen “oh no.”

“What?”

“It’s six.” He says, your stomach drops. “Six?! Oh my god, we’re supposed to be at work in two hours.”

“Two hours and thirty minutes.” Spencer corrects, his voice is filled with panic but also amusement as he teases you.

You get up from the couch, grabbing your shoes with a curse. “I can’t believe we actually stayed up all night.” You say shaking your head with a small laugh

Spencer stands up too, running his hand through his messy hair, somehow that makes him more attractive. “Me neither.” He admits.

He walks you to the door, and you quickly slip on your coat. “Thank you, Spencer. This was fun.” you smile

He smiles back, the corners of his mouth curving upward in that shy, boyish way. “Yeah, it was.” Then, after a brief pause, he adds. “Can I walk you to your car?”

“As much as I’d love that, I think you should start getting ready.” You say gently, nodding toward the clock. “It’ll only take a couple minutes.” He insists.

“It’s alright, I got it.” You assure him with a small smile. His eyes search yours, like he wants to say something more, but he only nods.

“Bye Spence. See you in a bit.”

“Bye y/n.”

Neither of you move right away. The silence hangs between you, comfortable but also heavy, like something unspoken is lingering in the air. After a moment you give him a small wave and turn toward the door. Spencer watches as you disappear down the hall, the echo of your footsteps fading.

As the door closes, he finds himself smiling because talking to you all night felt like the easiest thing in the world.

By the time you sit in your chair at your desk, coffee in hand and sleep deprivation weighing heavily on you, it’s clear you’re not the only one suffering.

Spencer drags himself in, his hair slightly damp, his tie just a little crooked.

“Pretty boy.” Derek drawls, grinning as he approaches Spencer. “Late night?”

“Not really.” Spencer replies too quickly, clearing his throat. “I, uh, just lost track of time.”

Derek’s grin widens. “Lost track of time? What were you doing? Reading quantum physics journals under the covers with a flashlight?”

“Something like that.” Spencer mutters, already regretting every decision that led him here.

Meanwhile, across the bullpen not to far from the guys, you’re not doing any better. Emily and JJ found you quickly and are now being relentless.

“You look like you’ve barely slept.” Emily remarks, eyeing you. “Rough night?”

JJ smirks. “Or was it a good night?”

“Guys.” You groan, sinking into your chair. “It wasn’t like that.”

“Mm-hmm.”

“Definitely not like that.”

Before you could even attempt to change the subject, Penelope joins. “I have a theory.” She says with a grin plastered on her face.

You brace yourself. “Oh no.”

“Oh yes.” She continues. “Two of my favorite nerds, who just so happen to look like they’ve been hit by the sleep deprivation express waltz in all disheveled and miserable. And yet…” she pauses for effect. “You both were fine yesterday. Did you guys have a hangout without us?”

JJ perks up. “So neither of you got any sleep?”

“Funny coincidence.” Emily muses, shooting you a pointed look. “Were you guys…together?”

Penelope’s eyes widen. “Did you guys-”

“No!” You and Spencer both exclaim in unison, far too loud to sound convincing.

You could feel the heat crawling up your neck as Derek bursts into laughter. “Well, that wasn’t suspicious at all.”

“I mean.” Emily grins. “We are profilers.”

“Yeah, and I’m profiling a whole lot of guilt right now.” JJ adds, her arms crossed.

Spencer, who is now a permanent shade of pink attempts a weak defense. “Well maybe you guys should rethink your position because we were just talking.”

Derek snorts. “Right.”

“Yes, talking.” You glare. “You know, people do that sometimes.”

“All night?”

“With no sleep?”

Before you or Spencer can defend yourself, Hotch’s voice cuts through the room. “As long as you both are awake enough to do your jobs, I and the rest of the team shouldn't care what you both were doing last night.”

The girls giggle, Derek shakes his head, clearly savoring every moment, and Rossi who had been silently observing from the sidelines, lets out a low chuckle.

“Young love.” He mutters under his breath, not trying to hide his amusement either.

“Not helping.” You glare.

But as the laughter lingers, you sneak a glance at Spencer. He’s already looking at you, lips twitching in that barely-there smile of his. And despite the embarrassment and exhaustion, you can’t help but smile back.

Because truthfully, you wouldn’t trade last night for anything. . .

Very funny because literally today I revamped/remade the A Modern Ghost Story playlist b/c the original didn't have the right vibes. This story is very much just Vibes atm for the most part (at least, aside from Roach), but I will share some of the Vibes Tunes. And also I will share a song or two from the separate Roach Playlist,,,,,, because yes I made a Roach playlist.

Actually one of my favorite things to do, as a lot of people I talk to on discord can attest to, is to take songs from my playlists and analyze them/explain why they relate to that story. I might...do a little of that... here.... Not to the extent that I usually do, but some of it.

So the first vibes song that I will share is The Perfect World by Marty Friedman! Just in general the vibes of apathy towards faith and accepting death, and like. Saving yourself and creating our own perfect world instead of relying on external forces... yeah <3 That vibes a lot.

Some lyrics I think are particularly fitting:

And then also:

Aside from that, other songs that I think vibe pretty well are Along Came A Spider by Czesław Śpiewa (I know it's a song about World War II but the Vibes..... really feels like a good horror song in general), The Business of Paper Stars by Hawthorne Heights (which is apparently about the education system but I am relating it to my OCs because it's got good vibes <3), aaaaand Bird With a Broken Wing by Owl City (idk how to explain this one but just the vibe of like. the idea that ghosts in A Modern Ghost Story are just sad, lonely, scared people).

OKAY so now I want to share a Roach Song. The Roach song I'm thinking of is one I actually used to associate with a different character, but it's a Roach song now. That song is Kiss Me, Kill Me by Mest!!! Specifically I relate this song to their relationship with a character I've deliberately been kinda quiet about, Vulture!!! He'll be explained a bit more in part two of Vultures are Holy Creatures (the Roach Ramble).

The TL;DR of Roach and Vulture's relationship was that it was super nasty and toxic and codependent and it's the reason behind a lot of Roach's persisting self-esteem issues, and that's the vibe I get from this song </3 I'll share some lyrics I like tho:

I kinda wanna type up a full summary/analysis of Kiss Me, Kill Me and why I think it fits Roach and Vulture, but I'm gonna wait at least until after I finish part two of Vultures are Holy Creatures.

Anyway to round this off, rather than sharing a bunch more Roach songs, I want to share songs that make me think of the other characters. Because I feel bad about how much I latched onto Roach. I won't share lyrics for all of them, I'll just share the song and explain it briefly.

Sydney Ambrose - Toxic Thoughts by Faith Marie (vibes of Syd's struggles to live up to their own expectations and their relationship with themself) (Fun fact this is also a good song for my OC Ink, but he's not in this story, and that's for very different reasons)

Yara Key - I Don't Daydream Anymore by Unlike Pluto (the vibes of this song are kind of wild but they make me think of Yara's desire to live her life to the fullest and enjoy it while she can rather than dwelling on what comes after)

Oliver Cox - It's Alright by Mother Mother (vibes of Oliver struggling a lot with his own mental health but putting off helping himself in favor of helping others, and him struggling with doubt but still trying to stand strong and have confidence in himself)

Vincent Cruz (new guy) - TV Head by Elliot Lee (vibes with Vincent being raised with very strict standards that he couldn't quite live up to and his need to lie to make others think he's something he's not so they'll like him)

Juno London - Dead Girls by Penelope Scott (honestly could vibe with most of the voids, but for Juno I relate this song to Juno's self-hatred that they mask by being an asshole to everyone, as well as the fact that they aren't a very empathetic person but still make the choice to show compassion, even if their methods are unconventional)

Asher King - Cradles by Sub Urban (also a song that applies to most of the voids, but for Asher this makes me think of her desire to mask her true feelings from others and come off as always cool, collected, and competent)

Apollo - Sleepwalk by Forrest Day (this song once again fits all the voids but for Apollo specifically I think this song fits his struggles trusting himself and his own perception of reality)

Wrap things up with a chill week or so somewhere with waves and sand and sunshine and then curl up at home for another week or two to recover. And as we’re talking dreams, I also echo sdw’s sentiments about everyone being properly compensated for their labour in any and all locations for any and all work they’re doing, pls and thx. ideally also with fancy things like paid sick leave, and a proper number of holiday days, and reasonable working hours.

So the oldest show I see you talk about is usually The Facts of Life but usually you don't go much further than 80s and 90s. I am very curious to know if you have favorites from the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s (not including TFOL obviously)? And explanations why! Hopefully something to keep your brain occupied during quarantine.

When I got this ask, the first thing that came to mind was The Twilight Zone. I’ll save my rant about that and some other shows under the cut.

Tbh, I haven’t gotten into a lot of classics pre-1980/1979-ish. I’ve had I Love Lucy in “My Stuff” on Hulu for, like, years now, but I haven’t sat down and watched the whole thing. I definitely watched multiple episodes back when it was on Nick at Nite. If it was on Nick and Nite in the 90s or in some other form of syndication, I’ve seen at least a few episodes. Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, Gilligan’s Island, Andy Griffith, Mary Tyler Moore, Dick Van Dyke, etc. 

A lot of older shows that I want to watch just aren’t available anywhere, or they weren’t available when I last looked. One that springs to mind immediately is Maude. It isn’t available anywhere past paying about $20 for the first season on Amazon prime which…I’m not really able to do atm. I know that features a younger Bea Arthur and touches on some controversial issues including gay rights and abortion and so many progressive causes I’d love to see. I think I’m more interested in that than the show it spun off of, All in the Family. 

Other shows I’ve had difficulty finding but want to watch:

Diff’rent Strokes (at least for the backdoor pilot of TFOL lol but it’s only on Hulu with the Starz add-on, which I don’t have)

Kate & Allie (1980s but I have to complain about how it’s fucking nOWHERE AND I JUST WANNA WATCH JANE CURTIN)

Anyways, for shows that first came to mind at this ask:

The Adventures of Rocky and Bullwinkle: Since I grew up with baby boomer parents, this was right up their alley back when they were kids, particularly my mom, since she was around 7 when the show started. We owned some episodes, if not the whole thing, on DVD when I was little and I loved it. My grandmother would tell us “Fractured Fairy Tales” a la one of the segments. I excitedly saw the movie back when it came out. I truly just enjoy the show, even if its “just” meant for kids. It’s fun and sweet and I obviously love good, dumb puns.

Also, two of my favorite Rocky Horror callbacks reference it. One of the most famous and classic callbacks is the Rocky Horror Roll Call: “Janet!” “Dr. Scott!” “JANET!” “BRAD!” “Rocky!” “BULLWINKLE!!!!”

One of them isn’t as common, I’m guessing because you have to know Rocky and Bullwinkle past the name to get it. “I grow veary of this vorld! When do we return to Transylvania, HUH?” “AFTER WE CAPTURE MOOSE AND SQUIRREL!” 

And a theater back in Kansas did a fringe festival production of Rocky Horror mixed with Rocky and Bullwinkle called, of course, The Rocky & Bullwinkle Picture Show. It was hilarious.

Laugh-In: Did anyone else have a bit of a TV schedule memorized for when you were sick, or was that just me? Lol back in elementary school, this would play on one channel and I’d normally watch an episode of it and then normally, like, Hamtaro after that lol I have specific memories of both of them ;alsdjk. It’s obviously best known for launching careers of many comedians, including Goldie Hawn and Lily Tomlin. And, of course, the time Nixon appeared on it to say “Sock it to me!” The 30 Rock parodies of it cracked me up.

I just found out that at least one season is on Amazon Prime which makes me very happy. 

The Twilight Zone: For someone who loves sitcoms and pretty much refuses to watch any prestige TV dramas, I really fucking love TWZ. One of my weirder life/pop culture goals is to see every episode in every incarnation, the first one having the most episodes and seasons (5 seasons, over 150 episodes) starting back in 1959. It’s particularly a weird one for me because I can be a bit easily spooked—like, I can’t do true crime whatsoever, it freaks me tf out and when I read through cases of things like that I have to watch something lighthearted or else I won’t be able to sleep lol. TWZ is easier for me, though. I also grew up with a lot of this on DVD due to, again, my baby boomer parents growing up with it.

I’ve seen an episode of the 2002/2003 reboot, the remake of one of the best (and most famous) episodes, “The Eye of the Beholder”, and I watched the first two episodes of Jordan Peele’s reboot, but haven’t finished the season. Ultimately, while I enjoyed his first episode, which I found very original, and his retake on the classic "there’s a gremlin on the wing of the plane!” episode, I find that doing an hour long show is just not a smart move when it comes to TWZ. For a bit of fun trivia, TWZ was originally cancelled after its third season, but CBS brought it back to replace two half hour shows mid-season, meaning the show had to be an hour long for s4, when it was originally only half an hour. S4, last I checked, isn’t even available on Netflix and seems to only be on Hulu. It was pretty much considered a failure to everyone and when you look at lists of the best twilight zone episodes, most people either ignore s4 or will throw one in while basically saying “well, we SHOULD include at least ONE…” 

TWZ really showed how much you can fit into half an hour, and a lot of the episodes feel so much longer—in a good way, of course. While back then there were less commercials so the shows could be slightly longer (25 minutes according to Wikipedia compared to 22-23 minutes nowadays), it still managed to pull you in and hold your attention and not overstay its welcome. I find that the hour long versions of the show make it harder to stay engaged and the pacing really has to slow down to fill in the space. 

However, I do enjoy how each incarnation has used sci-fi/fantasy to approach fears and prejudices of the time. I know the 2002 reboot redid “The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street” which, back in the original ‘59 series, was about fear of communists and the like, and made it about fear of terrorists and Islamaphobia. Jordan Peele’s obviously tackled a lot of racism and I know the third episode, without having seen it, was about police brutality against black people. The show definitely has the potential to tackle heavy subjects in a great way, I just think its a show meant to be half an hour.

And another side rant, TWZ >>>> Black Mirror. I’ve read through the summaries of every Black Mirror episode and have seen a couple, including the perfection of “San Junipero”. Besides that episode, I really don’t like the show? TWZ managed to be original and have varying endings and had messages besides “technology bad”. It’s why I can like “San Junipero” for being so unlike the other episodes. I’ve enjoyed some of the twists I’ve read, but a lot of it just rings hollow compared to TWZ for me.

So, that’s about it for classic shows I could call favorites, though, tbh, TWZ is probably the first I’d say is a favorite of these or any pre-1980s show.

In general, since the 90s shows defined my childhood, I’ve been enjoying watching those during this pandemic for nostalgia and comfort. I’m cycling through two shows I’ve watched all of before (3rd Rock from the Sun and Cybill) as well as one I’ve possibly seen all the episodes of but only through syndication and never straight through (The Nanny). But depending on how long we’re here, maybe I’ll get a chance to watch some of these older classics on my list!

When Nick Fury of S.H.I.E.L.D came to him because honestly, he the best surgeon they’re going to get in this half of the hemisphere anyway, Tony tried to throw him out for approximately twelve seconds–

Some of the incredulous is creeping out of this exchange with the way Fury’s remaining eye is focused. “Seventy years? Nick, that’s–” but when Nick hasn’t moved a muscle, hasn’t blinked, probably hasn’t so much as inhaled.

That’s when the possibility becomes reality.

“Holy shit.” Tony’s eyes blow wide and the run-of-the-mill play date in the lab to make something to help with those pesky arteriovenous malformations is right on the backburner. “You’re kidding me.”

“Would I be here if I was kidding, Stark? He is the real World War II veteran. You save his life and I will give you what we have on a certain reason he survived.”

Dr. Stark stares for approximately thirty seconds, judging. The next instant he’s in his sharp coat and red shades, riding to DC in an Apache helicopter.

(Once upon a time, he would have told the engineers how he could make it better, but since his Dad died, he didn’t have to build for SI anymore. He could build for his passion and not feel one fucking bit bad about it.)

Forty-five minutes and he’s scrubbing in, the situation crucial. Agent gave him the run-down without giving him any real information on how this happened. He got a glance at scans of the cranial fracture and hemorrhaging. Shards of skull had been embedded in the grey matter (which makes no sense how he survived this long except as another shred of proof he’s the real deal. Captain Fucking America�� his inner fanboy is screaming behind his calm, cool, surgeon demeanor.)

The team S.H.I.E.L.D gave him for the procedure are obviously all military, and in such need of a good laugh. Dr. Stark is sure they’re under order to watch every twitch of his fingers just in case he’s going to try making Captain America a drooling moron or something while poking around in his brain. So, he has to pull out the old SI CEO song and dance, being an unrepentant witty smart ass and talk fast before any of the sternly gowned agents can threaten him with horrible dismemberment if anything should happen to their delicate snowflake.

He gets the one called Barton to crack a smile while they’re scrubbing up, and it’s all going to be fine.

All is right with the world, except when he comes into the nice, sterile OR–

Where he finds the patient awake.

“Hey there, big guy,” he pats the shoulder of the utterly stunning blonde (who is apparently as old as his great-grandpa and has abs for miles), “we probably shouldn’t be meeting this way, considering you’re apparently the biggest secret in the Modern World, next to Big Foot sightings and the what is that gross ring around the tub really made of debate, but still, it’s nice to make your acquaintance. I’m Dr. Stark, and I’ll be your surgeon for the evening. Let me guess, gurney for one?”

He’s talking but checking machines, supplies, and sliding the special eyewear, taking the opportunity to review the site opened at the scalp to show the skull fracture at the side of Captain America’s head. While he watches, the skin is trying to heal around the clamps and a nurse apparently familiar with the Captain’s rate of healing is constantly re-adjusted to keep the wound open enough for surgery.

(The impact should have killed him. How did it not kill him? “Time is of the essence, Dr. Stark. You need to pull the bone fragments while he can keep his skull from healing over it.” Christ, Agent Tight-Ass, full work-up next time for Project Super Soldier Sandwich.)

“Hm…” slurred from behind the oxygen mask, and if Dr. Stark wasn’t one hundred percent invested on making sure he had everything he would need to fix the oddly not healing bleeder in the Captain’s temporal lobe (with things like Wernicke's aphasia hovering in the background), he would have shuddered. “Got that reference, Doc. S’funny.”

Watching the electroencephalography to monitor the Captain’s brain activity, Tony glances over as S.H.I.E.L.D’s people start filtering in around him and the ones with guns watch him closely through the observation windows.

“Never doubted you for a second, Captain. Guy that punched Hitler should be right above a Yeti in my opinion. Anyhoo,” and Tony, gowned, gloved, and masked, comes around to look at the very, very blue eyes and hold a hand close to the Captain’s blonde eyebrows to check the dilation. “The nice esthetician over there is going to hit you up with something to make you very, very sleepy so I can fix that terrible headache you’re probably having right now.”

And Captain America looks up at him from under those lashes, quirks a small shit-eating grin, “ssorry, Doc Stark. Knockouts...won’t work on me. S’ ‘causea the Serum. Gonna be awake no matter how much they gimmie.”

Blinking with his heart in his throat because he can’t imagine the pain the Captain must be in right about now, Tony gets himself back with, “oh? Then I have your witty repartee to look forward to while I work, don’t I Captain?”

“SSteve, Doc. I’m SSteve.”

“Nice to meet you, Steve. I’m Tony, and I’m going to save your life.”

“Soundss like ya gotta plan, Tony.”

And when the slightly familiar red-headed nurse gives him the thumbs up and it’s time to start, he has to step back around to the site being kept open for him.

“I always have a plan, Steve. Fortunately for you, part of my plan involves great music and nice conversations while we discuss your vitals.”

AC/DC starts in with a little Back in Black. And since he is who he is, him mouth moves on autopilot while he works with a delicate touch, fast and efficient, getting side-tracked from his running monologue with Captain Awake and Alert and Answering to accept vitals and updates from the other staff.

It’s been hours, and he’s on up-to-date knock-knock jokes.

They’ve run the gambit of must-see movies (and no he doesn’t see Agent Tight-Ass writing down the ones Steve asks about in detail because yes, he should see Firefly. Alien cowboys, Captain. Alien cowboys), and spent so much time on just the 60’s.

He’s gotten some stories that are absolutely hilarious (because Steve was so curious about the most oddball shit, ATMs, Fitbits, Twitter…) and is closing the wound in Steve’s scalp before he realizes he’s...done.

“Feels so much better, Tony, thank-you.”

“Hey, glad I was in the neighborhood. You’re quite the conversationalist when I’m poking around in your brain.”

“Could say the same. Thought ya might re-wire me to do something silly. Bark like a dog when someone says bell or something.”

And the staff is cleaning up around them, giving Tony the space to ease down just a notch, and wink, “sorry Captain, something I save for the bedroom, not the operating room.”

The sparkle that lights in Steve’s eyes–

–is really his undoing.

Riding the high of saving Captain America’s life got him all the way home and to his bed, still churning over the events of the surgery. Butterfinger and U were happy Daddy made it home in one piece (he’d kept the failed surgical bots, unable to decommission his first attempts at independent AI just because they’d rather play fetch than learn procedures...besides, they’re his creations and with their capacity to learn, they’re still evolving), and absolutely pampered him with coffee while he told them about why he was so late.

Butterfingers booped and patted his knee lightly while U rolled back and forth in excitement. Their favorite part was about the Apache, of course. His children were Philistines (but what would he do without them?).

Waking up at one am to Agent Tight-Ass leaning against the bureau in his bedroom was probably the fright of his life.

(Probably not, but no one needs to know that. Few people knew about his kidnapping in Afghanistan from a Medical Conference five years ago.)

“The Captain won’t let another doctor examine him.” Agent Tight-Ass said without even a hello or the decor is nice. “He’s asking for you.”

Tony completely blames it on sleep deprivation when he almost says my Captain? but shakes himself out of it at the last second.

The implications of Agent being here strikes him in the very next second and he’s throwing the covers off and climbing out of bed fast. A clean pair of purple scrubs and Agent knows he goes commando under his expensive and stylish pj pants. “Post-Op complications?” The litany of problems Steve could be experiencing after such a difficult and delicate surgery flash through Tony’s frontal lobe, a slideshow of problems he should have been able to catch before anyone else.

(They shouldn’t have made me leave him. He needs to be under close observation.)

“No. But, S.H.I.E.L.D needs to verify the Captain is physically fit for duty. He won’t let another physician check him out. We’d like you to come back to DC just to make sure.”

And, well, he’s Tony Stark, so he tries to play it off in front of Agent just to be a pain in the ass to deal with, but even before he’s had a single cup of coffee, Tony is riding in another Apache with his leg bouncing in anticipation.

He’s thrown a Henley on under his scrub top, cuffs up to his elbows and probably looking like a derelict resident, but dammit, at least he has good hair.

The damn corridors are long and Agent Tight-Ass is silently striding beside him while Tony desperately holds a cup of coffee in one hand and the Captain’s chart in the other, taking in every detail and plotting out all the worst case scenarios.  What he absolutely doesn’t expect is to see the gorgeous man in dark jeans, red t-shirt, terrible trucker hat, and a single black-gloved hand standing against the wall like he’s the only thing holding the building up. Tony manages to keep his tongue in his mouth when Agent Tight-Ass stops to introduce them.

“Sergeant Barnes, this is Dr. Stark, the Captain’s neurosurgeon.”

And those eyes are like winter, grey and cool, taking him in from dirty sneakers to the half-curl just above his temple. It’s terribly frightening and arousing at the same moment and Tony is absolutely, completely out of his depth in hot men.

(And in-between relationships, isn’t he? Why are the Gods so damn cruel?)

“Very nice to meet you, Sergeant. I understand you’re an unapologetic smart-ass that can kill pretty much anything a mile away and make the worst borscht known to man. Pleasure is all mine, really. Borscht is already terrible, but making is worse? That has to take substantial talent.”

What he doesn’t expect is the tall, intimidating brunette with the sexiest stubbled jaw to blink down at him, head cocking sideways like an inquisitive cat, “s’at so?  I think the pleasure is all mine, Doll. After all, Stevie ain’t quit talkin’ ya up all night. ‘Preciate ya taking good care a’ him fer me.”

Ah. Barnes. James Buchanan Barnes. Always thought those stories were exaggerated.

Tony absolutely does not, does not (think about them together), lick his bottom lip while staring up into those eyes. “Anything I can do for the red, white, and blue, Sergeant Barnes. Just showing my...patriotism.”

Tony grins wide when he gets the Sergeant to laugh out loud, ruining his intense I will murder you vibe.

“Speaking of the Captain,” Agent Tight-Ass interrupts smoothly.

Both of them give the agent waiting with a patient, pleasantly neutral expression, and when Tony looks back, he can see the tension in James Barnes, and lets himself be his usual kind of confident.

“Honestly, I’m going to take good care of him. If the slightest thing deviates from absolutely normal, you will be the first person to know.”

“Thanks, Doll. Good t’ know he’s in the best hands,” and the gloved one squeezes his bicep, right above his elbow (and he is completely imagining that hand has absolutely no give whatsoever) before he turns to where Agent is holding the door open.

The Captain is awake at this ungodly hour and apparently more chipper when he wasn’t in horrible distress from bleeding all up in his grey matter. It was really nice to see this side and observe his handiwork, amazed the staples had already worked themselves out and there wasn’t even a scar to show surgery had ever taken place.

(Steve’s hair is soft and unfairly naturally fluffy. Tony’s bare fingers are threaded in it while his thumbs press lightly over the surgical site to test the healing and be fucking amazed.)

Sergeant Barnes is there for the examination, back in a corner, with that sensual bad boy thing going on, arms crossed over his chest, eyes sweeping the room every few minutes (like he wouldn’t notice?).

And once he checks the normal vitals and signs, looks for all abnormalities, any hint of a complication, Tony Stark–

–lies through his teeth.

“You need at least a week of rest. No strenuous activity at all. No punching Nazis, jumping out of planes, or potentially dangerous anything. Watch terrible daytime TV, eat your weight in bad food, and take it easy. The possibility for complications, or of re-opening the bleed site is high, even for a Super Soldier. Normal downtime would be months, I’m giving you a week. No arguments Captain.”

He turns to look at the Sergeant over his shoulder and they exchange a nod, but he sees James Barnes rolling his lips down like he’s trying not to smile.

“A week? A whole week?” The Captain honest-to-God whines, looking up at him, sitting up with perfect posture that makes his chest thrust out in such a distracting way.

(Those eyes should really be illegal.)

“Absolutely. I’m saying only a week, okay? That is very, very good news for you. From the scans taken less than an hour ago, you’re healing quickly and well. Still, we’re not going to take anything to chance.”

He grins down, completely confident he’s giving Steve the chance to get out in the world more, maybe get out from under all the Agent-Agents around here.

It’s all too soon he’s being ushered out the room and back to his Penthouse in New York, his heart thundering in his chest. The last twenty-four hours seem like some kind of dream, some kind of forbidden fantasy, something he couldn’t have really done, and being set back at his place with his bots and his lab, his nice office in Stark Medical waiting for him tomorrow, with endless calls from Pepper about the Board really wanting him present for the Quarterly Meeting this time, all of reality lays so heavy on him that he thinks maybe Agent Tight-Ass messed with his memories somehow so he’d never be able to tell anyone why S.H.I.E.L.D really wanted him in the first place.

He goes back to bed for an hour of sleep, thinking about Sergeant Barnes’ hand and Captain Roger’s eyes.

Dodging Pepper’s calls the next day between consults, residents, trips to the robotics, and some time spent in the lab, he’s in his office for a whopping fifteen minutes when his secretary knocks on his door.

“I’m sorry Dr. Stark, but they said they know you and he’s your patient–”

When Captain America and Bucky Barnes appear over her shoulder, looking a devilish mix of sheepish (Steve) and smary as hell (of course, the crackshot), Tony wonders how much effort it would take to clear his schedule completely–

–for the next seven days.

Yes, i wear glasses. I can’t wear contacts cuz my eyes are messed up & the lenses of my glasses have tints & prisms in them.

Okay, first off my dreams are prophetic. Like, i get a lot of deja vu feels when i have never been somewhere before & then i see a scene that i have seen in my dreams. So, i had a dream when i was about 5 to 7 years old. I was at a party in an old mansion that my family had recently bought (in the dream) & we were on the top floor. Apparently we were being too loud cuz my mom came upstairs & was like “y'all need to shut up” & then she fell through the wooden floor. All the way down to the bottom. I woke up crying.

1. Can you remember what you were doing at 8:15 this morning? I had just gotten up again. I woke up an hour before, but I ended up falling asleep again.

2. In your phone’s contacts, who is the first person listed under the letter ‘R’? When did you last see that person? I only have one person, which is my brother, Richard. I last saw him on Christmas Eve-Eve.

3. If someone is sticking their nose into your business where it isn’t wanted, how would you deal with that? Would you say something to them? I likely wouldn’t say anything to be honest.

4. What did you have for lunch today? Or, if you haven’t had lunch yet, what do you think you will have? Ravioli stuffed with ricotta cheese and spinach.

5. Is there someone you desperately want to see/speak to atm, but you can’t? I want to catch up with Ty and grab some lunch or coffee or something soon, but I don’t know when that can happen. We haven’t hung out since back in October. We were hoping it would be the start of us hanging out more often again, especially once he was on winter break. Of course something came up on my end regarding my health, so that hasn’t been able to happen so far. It sucks. :/

6. Do you and your significant other have a special song? What is it? I’m single.

7. If you HAD to sing something on karaoke, what song would you choose? Ahhh you won’t catch me doing karaoke.

8. Can you remember the last time you felt ill? What was wrong with you? I feel that way all the time on some level for one reason or another. I have chronic health issues, physically and mentally.

9. What time is it now? Are you tired? It’s 6:16PM (it feels so much later), and yes of course I’m tired. Always.

10. If you wear make-up, do you take it with you, to reapply throughout the day? Does your make-up stay for a long time after you first apply it, or do you find that you need to reapply often? Are you wearing any make-up atm? I only keep lip gloss with me, but even that I hardly ever reapply. My eye makeup stays, but the eyeliner smudges a little at the corner of my eyes sometimes. All that requires is me wiping it away. I don’t ever bring any of that makeup with me to touch up. I am not wearing any makeup at the moment, no.

11. What if you found the last person you kissed, in bed with the last person you texted? Uh... that would be Joseph with my younger brother. No. Just no. My brother is seventeen first and foremost, so no. For two it would just be messed up to have my ex with my brother. Just not cool.

12. The last person you held hands with - have you ever kissed them? On the cheek.

13. Can you remember what your parents bought you for Christmas last year? Yes, as it was only last month. My memory can be spotty sometimes, but I do remember that. One of the gifts I got was a Ninja Coffee Bar, which is awesome. I bought a few different Torani syrups to make flavored lattes and such. Sometimes I’ll get fancy and add whipped cream and toppings, ha. Oh, and it came with a built in frother for the full latte effect.

14. Think about the person you fell hardest for. Why do you think your feelings for this person were so strong? How is he/she different compared to everyone else you’ve had feelings for? I never had a connection with anyone like the one Ty and I had. We just...clicked. We brought out good things in each other, and uplifted one another. We supported each other. He seemed to genuinely care about me. He seemed like he really did want to get to me, like who I really am. My likes and my interests and such. When we talked, he really listened. He’d remember little things I told him about myself. We used to text each other everyday for hours. He’d send me things he saw that reminded him of me. We hung out a couple times a week. It was always him who initiated it, so I knew he really did want to see me and it seemed like he really did enjoy being around me. We’d go out for lunch or grab coffee at Barnes and Noble and look around. He’d come over sometimes and we’d watch a movie or play board games. He’d invite me over for coffee and dinner. He included me in his life, and introduced me to people that were important to him. That meant something to me. We often talked about trips we wanted to take together someday. We wanted to plan a road trip. Things were SO good between us at one point, and I guess that should have been a clue. They were too good. I really thought it could have been my first real relationship. I definitely saw it going in that direction. Then it all changed, and now it’s gone. Time has never been on our side. I want to try and get back to where we were, but I worry that it’s too late. :/ I want it all back. 

30. Have you ever caught your friend cheating on their boyfriend/girlfriend? If you have, what did you do about it? If you haven’t, what do you think you would do? I didn’t catch her because I knew it was happening. She told me. I didn’t do anything about it except offer my advice when she asked for it. I don’t support cheating, but I couldn’t tell her what to do. Like I said, all I could do was offer advice and my opinion when she asked for it. Other than that, I did not get involved.

31. When your last relationship ended, how long was it before you felt ready to think about being with someone else? I was heartbroken over Joseph for a year thinking no one else would ever come along and have interest in me again, and then towards the end of that year Ty came into my life. I was afraid to go down that path again with someone else and before Ty, I didn’t have any interest in doing so. Then he came along, and turned it all around.

32. Has any of your friends ever had a boyfriend/girlfriend that you found attractive, and you would secretly have liked to have for yourself? No.

33. How many guys do you know named Matthew? I don’t know any, actually.

It doesn’t bother me that they’re sexually active and I’m not, it would just bother me when they’d make comments about it. They’d say things about how I need to “get laid” and need to just do it. How they’d set me up with someone. They’d make comments about my lack of experience whenever they’d talk about theirs. Or about what I should do with so and so when I was talking to a guy. Pushing me to do things with that person. That’s what bothered me. It’s none of their business. I have my reasons for why I haven’t yet, and that’s my own personal decision. When the right person comes along and I am ready, then it will happen. I’m not rushing it or doing it just to do it.
