With us getting such big gay wins recently, I wanna take a moment to appreciate how inherently queer Miraculous has always been, even when it was far more subtle. I don't know if it was corporate pressure, actual meddling and censorship, or simply the writers being afraid of such things and finally taking off the gloves now, but I do know you could always feel it, and I don't just mean the previously implied couples now made canon, though maybe more in them than most really appreciate too.

It's in Marc's whole everything, how he's a walking gay pride banner to a point his name is a pun on "arc en ciel" (rainbow), yet his episodes have always been about belonging and acceptance and his personality revolves mostly around his passion for writing (and occasionally sports!) rather than Liking Boys being his defining trait as many shows with such an obvious design would do.

It's in how WAY back in season 2 Rose straight up kissed Juleka on the mouth, just slightly off-screen, and under the Zombizou effect.

It's in Kitty Section's whole vibe, and multiple characters directly assigning Luka the David Bowie song Rebel Rebel. (The song starts "You got your mother in a whirl, cause she's not sure if you're a boy or a girl." Bowie was also openly bi.)

It's in the ways the Love Square plays with gender norms. In the way Chat Noir's aesthetic would be traditionally only be for Catwoman and (Spider-Man's) Black Cat types. The way Marinette is frequently portrayed as the Knight to Adrien's Princess, the way Adrien is allowed to be a "damsel" in a lot of ways and still worth of love and treasured just as he is with no need to "earn" that, in Adrien being the Yin and Marinette the Yang with their symbolism. The ways their presentation and energy varies between personas. Etc.

It's in Alec, and the fact that they were one of the first characters we ever met in the show, and maybe the writers hadn't planned anything with them yet but even if it was retroactive that's still cool. The fact that their change was so casual and just remains a thing now.

It's in the pregnant lesbian dressed as a French flag sans-culottes wielding a fucking guillotine as a weapon storming the Paris capitol a day or few before Bastille Day and yeah okay maybe the lesbian part is relatively small but come on that was just one of the sickest things ever lmao. But yeah Miss Bustier and her wife are nice to see, as are Majestia and Knightowl while we're talking about relatively minor but still present adult queer couples. (I hope we'll meet Kim's dads in the show this season, too!)

It's in the occasional crumbs of polyamory acknowledgement. When Andre says he could make a three-person ice cream, it just "might throw off the delicate balance" (which is more than the vast majority of everything would give us). When Marinette says Zoe's crush could like two people. When Marinette acknowledges her feelings for Luka and Adrien as valid at the same time even though she still pressured herself to choose and then to shift flavors with Luka. Nathalie's whole everything and arguably the implications she was in love with both Gabriel and Emilie.

It's in how Alix is only said to be aromantic via Twitter but she's clearly so happy in her solo time guardian role, just chilling with herself. And the ways her reactions to Marinette's issues occasionally vary from the rest of the cast, i.e. "Wouldn't it be more logical to buy her a smoothie and help her work out her love problems?", are so good.

It's in how they treat chosen names in the series. That one I feel is so easy to overlook or take for granted, but whatever someone identifies as right then is their objectively true and correct name (see: the Book of Truth identifying Pharaoh, not Jalil, in Reunion). Every time Gabriel changes his villain name everyone uses the new one immediately. It's just really nice.

Nearly all of these things individually are so small, but there are so so many of them and I'm probably forgetting more. The series has always had queer influence, and it's honestly not surprising that they went through the steps needed to use the Progress Pride flag in a commercial work, let alone that we're finally getting more loud and explicit rep this season after the bolder steps they took in s5. But I'm so glad for every bit of it, deeply glad that it's finally more front and center, and I hope we get more moving forward, too!

as a boxer myself... i honestly just made this for me. HELPP

Will leaned against the ropes of the boxing ring, sleeves of his oversized hoodie pulled over his hands like some bloke waiting for his turn on the swings. His eyes weren’t on the coach or the training or even the slightly alarming crack of glove meeting pad.

They were on you.

Specifically: you—dressed in nothing but a black sports bra and skin-tight bike shorts, toned legs moving like a piston as you ducked, jabbed, and twisted with ridiculous precision.

“Jesus Christ,” he mumbled under his breath, gaze dragging over your form. “This is either a personal fantasy or a threat.”

You swerved, fist connecting with the mitt in a satisfying thwack, and called out—without looking at him—“Stop staring like you’re drafting a Wattpad fic in your head.”

Will choked on a laugh. “Sorry, sorry. It’s just—” he whistled low under his breath, “—you’re literally out here living your ‘hot professional athlete’ era, and I’m trying not to combust.”

You glanced at him briefly, sweat glinting at your temple, an amused smirk tugging at your lips. “Focus on breathing, sweetheart. You’re turning a bit pink.”

“Oh, I’m beyond pink,” he said, watching you move again with that dumbstruck expression of a man watching his celebrity crush in HD. “You look like a Marvel character. Or a menace.”

You threw one final punch and the coach called the round, shaking out his arms as he stepped back. “Right. She’s terrifying,” he muttered, mostly to Will.

Will didn’t disagree.

You peeled off your gloves and tossed them aside, walking over with an easy swagger that made Will’s brain short-circuit all over again. He held out your water bottle like a peace offering, although his eyes couldn’t stop flicking down and back up like he was trying not to get caught.

“Look at you,” you teased, grabbing the bottle. “All supportive boyfriend energy.”

“I contain multitudes,” Will said. “Most of which are trying very hard not to tell you how fit you look right now.”

You raised a brow and smirked, taking a slow sip. “Oh? Holding back, are we?”

Will blinked. “Absolutely not. You look insane. Like—biceps? When did that happen?” He reached forward to lightly poke your arm. “I thought I was the strong one in this relationship.”

You scoffed. “Will, you once dislocated your shoulder opening a stubborn pickle jar.”

“Character building,” he shot back, deadpan. “Also not the point. Point is—I would very much like to remain conscious, so if we ever argue, I will be apologising first.”

You wrapped your arms around his waist, pulling him closer, grinning when he didn’t hesitate to hug your still-sweaty body back.

“And yet,” you murmured, resting your head against his chest, “you still wind me up constantly.”

“Yeah,” he said, chin resting on your hair, “but only 'cause I like you. Also, it’s fun. You’re hot and you threaten me—it’s a win-win.”

You chuckled. “You’ve got issues.”

“I’ve got taste,” Will corrected. “And questionable self-preservation instincts, but mostly taste.”

The gym’s noise faded a little, the background blur of clanking weights and bouncing jump ropes disappearing into the hum of your post-workout adrenaline and his steady heartbeat. He tightened his arms around you slightly.

“You know,” he added, voice softer now, “I’m actually stupid proud of you. Even if I do feel like a Victorian housewife every time you’re in the ring. Like—‘come home safe, my love, I’ve lit the hearth and made stew’ vibes.”

You snorted against his hoodie. “You are absolutely the stew-making type.”

Will grinned. “Yeah, and I’d serve it shirtless just to impress you.”

You pulled back just enough to look up at him, raising an eyebrow. “That’d be impressive, alright. In a health code violation kind of way.”

“Whatever gets me noticed,” he said, then kissed the tip of your sweaty nose with a stupidly fond expression. “You’re terrifying. And I love it.”

You smirked, eyes twinkling. “Good. You’re meant to.”

i still think the devil may cry fandom's vast oversimplification of the themes in devil may cry (regarding human "good" vs demon "evil") are amplifying some very bad faith criticisms of the netflix adaptation. as well as some weird moral essentialism i just really don't vibe with. this is long and kinda messy but whatever.

i see people mostly take issue with this scene in which lady and white rabbit have their confrontation and lady says this:

this, to me, does not go against the themes of the game at all. it's not some cynical attack on "humanity". contextually, this is a sorely needed moment of reflection on lady's part, where she's able to connect with white rabbit and realizes that their ruthlessness is a shared trait. she's speaking about herself here. lady considers herself the antithesis of a demon, yet she realizes how terrible she's been acting and that they're Not So Different. she's a flawed human being and this is an explicit, textual acknowledgment of that.

i really take issue with the idea that devil may cry has ever been about coddling and portraying humans as innately good. most major villains in the dmc games are human, statistically. every single dmc game except the first 1 has an over-arcing human villain at the center of the conflict. sanctus is a religious cult leader. agnus is an unethical mad scientist. arius is a CEO. arkham is a wife killer. these are all very human evils. demon villains like mundus and argosax tend to embody more stereotypically villainous evils, but the human villains are much more nuanced and varied in their approach, which in some respects makes them a lot more dangerous.

but you might say "well they're evil because they throw away their humanity, as dante even calls out. these tears are a gift only humans have" and to which i say, so? these are conscious choices these villains made to get where they are. yes, thematically their decision to throw away good traits like compassion and empathy led them on the path to evil, and dante himself equates these traits with humanity, but dante is also biased against his demon half and has an entire arc about being wary of that part of himself until he's finally able to accept it, which is how he awakens his sin devil trigger in 5 (mirroring vergil's rejection/ultimate acceptance of his human half.)

idk man. just feels yucky seeing all of this "well demons have always been an Evil Race in devil may cry" when no, it's always been more complex than that and pretending otherwise is a massive disservice to this series. there is no hard moral dichotomy in dmc. sparda disproves this from the very opening scene from the very first game. he was one of the most powerful demons in hell, who fell in love with humanity and decided to turn against his own kind. even if demons in a general sense tend to be "evil" (mundus seems to be a particular outlier in how evil they are honestly, hating humanity to an almost comical extent), they're shown to be completely capable of good, just as on the flip side, humans are capable of being evil. again, it's about choice, what you do with the power given to you, choosing to protect what's important or throwing away everything. these are not immutable traits of humans or demons, as that would mean characters like sparda, trish, arkham, sanctus, lucia, bradley, baul, modeus, etc would not exist.

there's maybe an argument to be made about dmc netflix's explicit use of politics and whether this is appropriate or not, but i don't think it's a bad thing it decided to really dig in on the nuances of humanity. i think the choice to make white rabbit a human villain who in a sense "throws away his heart" makes him thematically consistent with devil may cry's ethos, as ive mentioned in my other post about him. i view him akin to a character like vergil, who straddles the line between human and demon, and doesn't really fit into either "demon overlord" or "overambitious human sociopath" like the other series villains. more variety is good actually.

Hi there! I recently came across your blog and I really have enjoyed your takes and analysis on Katara and Aang’s relationship. I was wondering if I could hear your thoughts on a common thing I’ve seen antis bringing up a lot lately. So I’ve been seeing antis talk a lot about how the creators have apparently said in interviews or whatever that Katara and Aang’s relationship was conceived as a relationship where Aang has a crush on her but Katara sees him as a little brother and is akin to a kid having a crush on his babysitter. I’ve been seeing this take a lot lately about how creepy it is that the creators themselves have said that Katara and Aang’s relationship was like a kid with a crush on his babysitter and how weird it is that they wanted to turn such a dynamic into a romantic one and basically ahving been using it as fuel to go ‘see even the creators acknowledge that Kataang has a creepy/weird mother-son type of relationship that suddenly turns romantic!’

As for me I feel like if the creators really have said that that’s very weird of them to do that and it seems like they have some major dissonance between those comments they made and what they actually portrayed in the show. I never got the vibe that Katara is acting like Aang’s babysitter in the show.

Sure sometimes Katara has to take charge and remind the others of their responsibilities when they’re getting a little too distracted by having fun but she also joins in on the fun most of the time. A lot of friends groups have that one friend who takes on that role that Katara sometimes does where they go “okay we’ve had our fun but we need to focus now”. Even Sokka takes on that role sometimes.

I just really do not understand why the creators made that bizarre babysitter comment but I am constantly seeing antis bringing it up now and it’s frustrating. I would love to hear what you have to say on the matter as I really love to read your defenses of Kataang.

From what I know, the clip that is being referred to is in description of the original concept for atla. You know, the one where Katara was Kya, Toph was a buff 16 year old boy with a soul patch who was meant to be in a love triangle with Katara, and Zuko's scar was on the wrong side. Safe to say, not the best indicator about the atla we actually got. Maybe Katara and Aang's relationship was originally meant to be such, however, as they grew from those original concepts, their relationship also became much more fleshed out and nuanced.

Because really, when watching the show, you really need an agenda to force Katara and Aang into that Mother/Son relationship. I'll focus mostly on Kataang rn, but I do wanna one day talk abt how "Momtara" hurts other characters as well, particularly Sokka, who has been done SO DIRTY by certain parties, it's ridiculous.

I think a lot of Momtara "rethoric" relies on minimising Katara's childish qualities, while magnifying her "motherly" qualities, and doing the reverse to the rest of the Gaang (sans Zuko, who also often gets the parentification treatment). Which often feels rather insulting to all the characters involved. It, of course, minimizes Aang, Sokka and Toph, all capable in their own rights, to Katara's helpless dependents. And it curtails a lot of Katara's strengths too.

For example, the Desert is often shown as an example of Katara being the motherly one, as the rest of the group are out of comission, and Katara is the one to keep them all together. But presenting it as "everyone is incompetent so Katara obviously had to pick up the slack" takes away from what an Amazing character episode this is for Katara. I don't wanna repeat myself, but here's a post of me gushing about the episode. But I think Katara calming Aang out of the Avatar State is such an amazing crowning jewel for how she was focused on in the episode, and it is an attocity to flatten this momentous scene into a "mother comforting her tantrom throwing child" situation.

Katara and Aang connect over their grief over the genocides they are both survivors of, and Aang's avatar state is often a manifestation of the anger, pain and sorrow of that grief. The first time Katara pulls him out of it, she is directly speaking to his grief and empathising with him over it- something she does with many other characters. So, unless she was also mothering Haru, Jet, Zuko and fucking Hama- this argument rings hollow.

If we want to play semantics with chore splitting, almost every member of the Gaang (and especially Aang and Sokka) have been shown to bring the group food, or provide the group with drinking water and do other chores around the group. Yes, while we see Katara do the "domestic" chores often, and it is important to give her ber flowers for it, it is important to note that she is not the only one putting in the work to keep the group taken care of. Outside of the chores usually mentioned around camp, we see that Sokka is the one who does a lot of planning around timetables, and Aang seems to be the one with the most geographical knowledge and ability to chart courses due to being a nomad.

Katara : So Toph, usually when setting up camp, we try to divide up the work. Toph: [Shrugging casually.] Hey, don't worry about me. I'm good to go. Katara: Well, actually what I'm trying to say is, [Holds arms out in gesture.] some of us might fetch water, while someone else might set up the fire pit, or put up the tent. [Momo flies over to her, dropping several berries he had collected into her hands.] Even Momo does his fair share.

Similarly, the Gaang pass around the role of voice of reason, depending on who is the most predisposed to be in posession of the sacred braincell at the time. They all have their moments to shine, not because those surrounding them are idiots or incompetent, but because everyone has their strengths and weaknesses and the reasin the Gaang is such a good unit is because they are a group that works together well and fills in for each others weaknesses and strengths.

While we call them a found family, and rightfully so, they aren't an actual family unit. There are no set providers and dependents, and there are certainly no parents. They're children forming a shockingly well rounded community, and they all have their bouts of childishness.

While Aang is known for his childishness and immaturity , he also has displays of shocking maturity and wisdom for someone his age. This duality is honestly one of my most favourite aspects of him.

I also find it interesting that Aang has actively been posited to parallel both of Katara's parents, which is an aspect of their relationship that is rarely discussed. The scenes of Kya and Aang sacrificing themselves to the fire nation are incredibly similar, their dialogues lining uo hauntingly well, even in how they reassure Katara when they are the ones about to be harmed. And, in the Awakening, we see Katara's abandonment issues surrounding her father also apply to Aang, which is a wonderful aspect of her character that doesn't get discussed nearly enough.

Katara: Aang. He just took his glider and disappeared. He has this ridiculous notion that he has to save the world alone, that it's all his responsibility. Hakoda: Maybe that's his way of being brave. Katara: It's not brave; it's selfish and stupid! We could be helping him, and I know the world needs him, but doesn't he know how much we need him, too? How can he just leave us behind? Hakoda : You're talking about me too, aren't you?

This is not to flip the cat on its head and start claiming that Aang is playing the role of parent to Katara, but rather to add to the fact that Aang is one of the only characters to fully acknowledge Katara as a child, like him, and help her attempt to heal that inner child. Aang is also one of the most encouraging characters towards her, supporting many of her endeavours. And no, not in a manner a child idealises their mother. He's capable of disagreeing with her, they just seem to share many interests and goals, like most compatible couples lol.

Aang trying to make sure Katara feels included, supporting her, helping mitigate her insecurities are not the actions of an unaware toddler, but a kid who intuited his friends needs and is keepubg them in mind because he cares for her. We see Katara gets very insecure that she's not "fun" and Aang has been shown joking with her and encouraging her to join in on fun. We see him reassure her in her waterbending abilities multiple times because he know her identity as a waterbender is very dear to her.

Of course everyone talked abt the penguin scene, but it really is such a good basis for their relationship.

At her core, Katara is a young girl. A brave, talented, strong, kind girl with too much on her shoulders and too much pain in her past. But still a girl. She has her bouts of childishness she doesn't fully know how to express her feelings and articulate herself, she can be naive and immature, and silly and playful and that is all ok. Frankly, it makes my skin crawl to see that part of her identity stripped away in fanon.

Last year I made the observation that to those who care only for Katara the woman, Katara the child means little to nothing. The little girl she once was is perceived as long dead, and to be avenged, not a dormant part of her that can be nurtured back into bloom. Yes, Katara had to grow up faster than most, play at being an adult for the benefit of those around her. But that doesn't mean she isn't young, that she cannot heal from that, especially with the war ending.

And yes, that healing will involve Aang, because the role he played in her life is crucial.

Many have pointed out that presenting Katara as a motherly figure falls into the uncomfortable trend of presendinh girls of colour, especially black and brown girls, as more mature than their lighter peers. I don't think everyone who likes this fanon interpretation is a horrid misogynistic, I think many people, particularly women and girls, who experienced some form of parentification see themselves in Katara and find a noble sacrifice, or some manner of catharsis in the idea of her being a longsuffering, neglected mother figure. Which, if that floats your boat- indulge in that, enjoy it. But it is bending the text rather massively, as Katara and the group act more as a balanced community than standard family unit, and Katara states multiple times that she is uncomfortable and upset by the "mother" label being placed on her, and it doesn't describe her perfectly either, which is highlighted several times.

So I made a whole brand haha

Okay so to preface, this was part of an assignment that was for my finals for a class, and i kind of really liked how it turned out over all, mostly because the concept itself i had made i treated it rather lightly- which ended up being a lot of fun!!!

So, this is my informal presentation of that! Mostly because i put a lot of work into it and i want to share!

SO... lemme introduce you to...

Periwig!

OK, so how do i start off?

As previously mentioned this was made for class, so anything here is actually not real and a lot of images are taken from pinterest or just google in general and put together, so whatever you see in regards to photography is not mine! Everything else IS. (like buttons and designs and the like)

So, what's Periwig? As the name suggests, it's a wig making brand!

Ah yes, very silly. Or that's what i had initially thought when in the concept stage. I didn't take a very serious approach in regards to this mostly because i wanted to focus on having fun with it.

The brand itself also takes this approach, since i imagined it being led by a small team, so the brands voice and tone more so speaks like a friend! Here's an example, since i know in screenshots the scroll boxes are going to cut off text:

No, really — what you’re looking at right now literally began as a basic web-making project for a design class, built with more caffeine than sleep and a very chaotic amount of glitter.

It wasn’t meant to be a real brand at first. But the idea — something playful, cute, and deeply personal — wouldn’t leave [koi] alone. She kept sketching wigs, silly characters, colorful layouts. It felt like something bigger was quietly growing behind the scenes… something she couldn’t ignore.

With the help of a few amazing online friends (you know who you are 🫶), Periwig slowly started to bloom. They brainstormed late at night, shared doodles and silly color palettes, and imagined a little world where creativity, self-expression, and cutesy weirdness were celebrated. That’s when Peri was born — our little puppet girl mascot, stitched together with love and used as the main model and spirit of the brand. She’s bubbly, curious, and maybe a little unhinged (in a good way).

Periwig isn’t just about wigs (though, yes — we love wigs).

It’s about art, character, and style — the freedom to become who you want to be, whether that’s through a new hairstyle, a colorful character design, or a puppet dancing in a product video.

but wait, who's Peri? I'm glad you asked!!

Originally i had no intentions for a mascot or any sort of representative figure for the brand, but after looking at the color palette and the logo i had designed, i had thought of making a character off of it! and thus, Peri was born!

Peri... periwig... peri's wigs... yes yes i laughed about it and yes i know it is very dumb. I had actually made Peri after i had already started making the website prototype, only till i got to halfway into the homepage did i realize having one might help me "take up space" and help with the overall design, while also being a "voice" for the brand.

here's the description about her, since it also is caught off in the scroll box:

she's essentially this brands version of Barbie, except well... puppet version. and the funniest thing, i hadn't thought that her hair and skin colors matched Wally until after the fact, t'was unintentional! but the color combination works, so it stayed.

As for the actual website itself... well... i did a lot to try to make it nice. Especially since Adobe XD was such... a piece... of... interesting software.... (in terms of using it for the first time, haha!)

of course this is just looking at it design wise... it is a *prototype* so all the buttons and links actually do work!

that's where you get funky wires like this, since all the buttons link back to pages and such... honestly, i had believed actually linking everything to together and making it functional would be the time consuming part, but you would be SURPRISED. The actual DESIGNING of the website is the part that takes the most time, which i had... definitely underestimated it.

These pages and closeups are honestly the parts i like the most, and the ones the most finished So i thought some closeups might be appreciated!

But yes, i hope you liked my informal presentation of the brand! There's more i have, but i thought to only just show the designed parts, since the rest is just technical information like target audience, and audience habits and the like.

but yea this was the main reason as to why i was just... dead... among other things as well, but hopefully with the small break im on i'll be able to post more!

I forgot a lot of this book. I tend to mix up PwF and DD Because they both focus on a lot of the same bad guys.

I taught martial arts for several years, and I can really appreciate the real growth that Valkyrie goes through. There is no training montage, shes not suddenly good at martial arts OR Magic. She steadily grows with each book. Derek did a hell of a job being real with how learning to fight works and how much time it takes. How panic destroys your focus and how techniques can be applied perfectly but still not work sometimes. Fights are messy and require your brain to move quicker than your body, and then adrenaline kicks in and suddenly you're relying on muscle memory, so you better hope you trained your shit properly. These books as a whole are really good about showcasing this, but I noticed specifically in this book that Valkyrie is written exactly how a novice fighter would be.

This is the first book where we actually get to see China fight and see her signum linguistics in motion! It says in this book that China's tattoos turn black/visible when shes actively using them. When she taps certain ones they glow different colors. I'll have to come back to this and see if this is continued to be described and I just somehow forgot?

We also get introduced to Skulduggery's hilarious interrogation techniques in this book. Not Detective Me yet, but instead we get the Terrifying Blood-Sucker of London Tanith being forced to go with the flow is so funny, I love them

We know Gordon had claustrophobia from AOH. Is is a genetic fear? lol Anyway, do we think Val's claustrophobia mayyy have been triggered by the Torment's hallways almost crushing her? Just possibly? Hmm (The first instance of her actually having a claustrophobia panic is when Sanguine drags her down in this book)

I wish they used code words more often. I know it sort of loses its 'gotcha' when you know that 'be brave' means they have a plan, but I would have at least liked to see it again. It's used twice in this book, alas. Give me more Derek.

There's LOT's of significant foreshadowing in this last few chapters actually. Rereads are so fun because when I'm specifically looking for clues, I find them :0

Cut to FTO, where they do indeed fight three gods. Valkyrie got Apollo's dodgeball there xD Not to mention Darquesse etc etc

I'm not sure when Derek decided that Skulduggery was going to be Lord Vile, but I'm convinced he at least knew by book 2. Exhibit A, when Skulduggery knows exactly whats coming, and how to avoid it because he's done it before (I don't think we ever see Vile use this power again though, I think Derek forgot about it lol)

Exhibit B: He knew exactly where to undo the armour

I know that China doesn't learn Vile's real identity until LSoDM, but this is hilarious because she's so down bad for this man and she doesn't even know the extent of it yet xD (Cough change the world cough SoW cough cough cough)

Tanith was supposed to die in SOTA. Because she doesn't, Derek almost kills her in every book leading up to her Possession. In this book the Grotesquery injects her with Helaquin poison :D! She also almost gets crushed by the Torment-spider and gets put to sleep by Vengeous, but eh, just another Wednesday yk?

Shout out to the 7 named characters that were introduced in this book and didn't live to see the end of it. (Not all of the 21+ Characters that died were named, and the Reflection only mostly died so hey)

I interpreted the scene differently, tbh. I didn't feel like Sam was being pushed against that hard. maybe just me hearing what I wanted to hear lol but I think it's very in character for Sam to refuse to cooperate with a team put together and operating by a known shady crook of the govt. presuming Bucky and Sam are as close as we assume from TFATWS and CA:BNW, Sam was probably aware of Bucky's motivations for running for Congress and of the situation with impeachment against Valentina.

...then Bucky gets strong armed into being part of a state-sanctioned group of Avengers in a way that let's Valentina get off scot free. her power limited in ways, as Yelena pointed out, yes, but she's certainly not impeached and behind bars. and consider what happened to Bucky's Congress friend and everyone else who'd been opposing Valentina. by cooperating and becoming the New Avengers, they did effectively endorse the corruption.

and I honestly think it makes sense for Bucky's characterization to do that!! I rambled about it somewhere already but clearly Bucky had been trying to do good by playing within the rules of the system, and now he has the system wanting him to help by superheroing. given his fears and insecurities and general position in life, I think it makes sense that he thinks that doing this is for the best. he's trying to do the right thing by cooperating.

Sam tried that and we all saw how it went in BNW. so I think this is a really understandable divide for them to be at a cold standstill over: from Sam's POV, the world can't afford for the superheroes to be payrolled and following orders from the rich and influential, and that's exactly what Bucky has agreed to do. Sam was already putting together an independent team and he's just staying on course.

also, while I love the potential for character growth for all of them bc of this, I definitely see the Thunderbolts at the end as having made it to the stage where they all Do Good Things now but not all of them having reached the point of doing the good things for good reasons. true heroism ala the original Avengers is doing the right thing selflessly, with the focus and all the heart going into wanting to help others. I get the impression that most of the Thunderbolts in that end credit scene are more on the vibe of needing for their lives to not fall apart again so this needs to work goddammit - and just mmmm the potential for a next step in their character arcs where they grow and learn healthier mental habits and begin to shift their motivations for doing the good things from fear of failure to an honest desire to help others. yes plz.

but in light of that i felt like their criticism of Sam and his team spoke favorably of the character of Sam and his team, since we hear through this conversation that the Thunderbolts do Not have their shit together and their primary concern is preserving their own status. I love all of the characters and I love them together, but at the end of the day they are currently a publicity stunt of a corrupt faction of the govt and it sounds like they may care more about their negative press bc of the possible implications for their job security than they care about helping people.

Sam's priorities are in the opposite order, and I think it's that that makes the convo at the end not sound critical to me. the Thunderbolts kinda ARE fake heroes. I don't think the characters would even all get along on the same team - I think the Thunderbolts have a great Runaways kinda team dynamic that would be beautiful if they didn't have to deal with the pressure to perform.

and so lastly. (i am tired and this has no structure sry 😭) Bucky is trying to be the good experienced mentor of the team and help keep everybody on the path toward doing good things for good reasons, but they are currently mostly at the good things for selfish reasons stage AND they're sanctioned by a corrupt govt, so he's in a bad position. and Sam is looking at this team of people who aren't exactly heroes yet, who have a history of doing bad things for bad people, and seeing that they are agreeing to be state sponsored by bad people, and he's not okay with that and not happy that Bucky is going along with it. I think Sam would be worried for Bucky, and thinking that Bucky's going to backslide, and feeling like this shows Bucky already has, and that's not unreasonable of him. I think it makes sense that they's talk it out, Bucky would insist this is the right thing to do, and Sam would refuse to accept that leading a team under the sanction of bad people is a good idea. Bucky's playing with fire, even though his motivations are good.

I’ve seen Thunderbolts*! Here’s my full, SPOILER review!

Buckle up, i’ve got a lot of thoughts and a lot of word space.

Well, that was a pretty great movie! If you’ve seen my non spoiler review you’ll know I gave it an 8/10, and rightfully so. The first hour, hour and a half of the movie eats the rest of the movie up and if the ending had been as good as the first acts I would give it a 10/10. it kind of felt underwhelming and almost like it was a “power of friendship” moment—though none of these people are really friends, so maybe that’s the point.

First of all—Yelena and Bob. God, they were amazing, I loved the dynamic between them and it was really interesting to see the whole void thing come into play with how they felt about life. It was great.

The first scene when Taskmaster, Yelena, Walker, and Ghost all meet—that was amazing. my jaw DROPPED when Taskmaster got shot in the head, I wasn’t expecting her to get taken out so soon or by one of the Thunderbolts. I mean, we all knew she was a goner but I really wanted to see a little more of her. I liked her suit a lot!

Obviously, I have to talk about Bucky. I have two small complaints—one, I wish we saw a little more of him. Considering he was listed second in the credits I think he was a little underused and slightly nerfed but honestly not by much. to go off that, I WANTED TO SEE HIM IN THE VOID! the only thing we got was a nod to the fact that while he was in his void searching for yelena and bob (“i have a great past, so I’m fine” that whole thing) he obviously saw something to do with the winter soldier. call me crazy but i saw blue lights in the room behind him that he crashed through from and it gave very much cacw winter soldier flashback vibes. and i WANTED TO SEE THAT! i wished we could have seen more than yelena, bob, valentina, and walkers voids.

Oh, valentina. she was so horribly great, i was so ready for the thunderbolts to rock her shit but then she turned it around and called them the new avengers. oh i hate her so much they did so good. her assistant was kinda slay too but eh!

NOW ONTO MY COMPLAINT AS A SAMBUCKY ENTHUSIAST—WHY TF DID WE ONLY GET A MENTION OF SAM? AND IN THE POST CREDITS? Honestly, i find it crazier that sam and bucky talked off screen and they didn’t even show us. and that APPARENTLY the conversation didn’t go over well, and now sam is suing them… guys we might actually be in the sambucky divorce era im gonna crash out. can they just kiss hug it out and get over it. and considering how close they got in tfatws and we saw them talking the cabnw i just really liked their dynamic and how happy they seemed as friends and now that’s just gone (but it is funny that sam is suing bucky and co). although, it will make for an interesting dynamic come doomsday, which makes me nervous considering that bucky’s time in the mcu is coming ever so closer to an end… (someone start recommending me bucky fics NYOW)

honestly, i kind of don’t like the whole new avengers thing. i kind of wanted them to stay as the thunderbolts, as dumb as it might be. I don’t like valentina though and I really wanted them to kick her ass. it was a funny credits sequence tho, with the “new avengers? nope!” love that they’re still universally hated i guess.

BUT OH MY GOD I WAS GONNA GO FERAL FOR BUCKY IN THE POST CREDITS. GOOD LORD HE LOOKED FINE. OH EM GEE, HIS HAIR? OH THE WAVES. SOMEONE TAUGHT OUR BOY ABOUT CONDITIONER AGAIN AND HE LOOKED INCREDIBLE. PLEASE LET HIM HAVE THAT HAIR IN DOOMSDAY AND PLEASE DONT LET HIM DIE.

okay, i’ve gotten past how much i love bucky and must move on to the Other Things that happened.

now, about the INSANE DROP IN THE CREDITS? the second i saw the “fantastic four: first steps theme” in the music credits i was like oh it’s so over. AND THE SHIP? oh dude their world is so cooked, doomsday is gonna be fire AND ARE WE GONNA SEE THE THUNDERBOLTS (new avengers) AT THE END OF FFFS? ARE WE GONNA SEE THE AVENGERS AND THE NEW AVENGERS WITH THE FANTASTIC FOUR? see, that’s why thunderbolts* was a good movie! it’s got me actually planning to see Fantastic Four: First Steps because i NEED TO SEE WHAT HAPPENS!!! i’m hooked!!!

Walkers one liners were great and even though i hate him i kinda feel for him. Yelena and Bob and Red Guardian were stand-outs; I LOVE BOB! and red guardians entrance was incredible as well, along with the car chase scene up to bucky rocking everyone’s shit.

Like i said, the first half of the movie was a 10/10; the last maybe 45 minutes was more of a 7/10. i did love the thunderbolts getting applause in the street which valentina definitely liked once she got the idea to market them as the new avengers. also the fact that they operate out of the old avengers tower? the fact that yelena and bucky are lowkey leading? the outfits that kinda ate down? i kinda vibe with it, but like i said i would hav really liked it if they weren’t considered the new avengers. maybe it would have been better if sam had shown up in the end to rally them for his cause as the avengers or if they just stayed the thunderbolts and did missions more akin to what steve and nat did in the beginning of catws. obviously not with them unknowingly working for hydra, but them as undercover ops would be cool.

idk! i just got out of the movie like an hour ago and i can’t remember it all right now bc it was so much good content.

tldr: the characters were great, the movie was solid/great, the post credits were worth it/insane and the story was good. if i missed anything that anyone wants me to cover (as if im some prime news source lmao, i am not, im just a mcu blogger who has been waiting for years for this movie) then lmk!

I've been picking mostly only the essential flirt options with lucanis in the romance so far (I've personally found the dynamic much more natural and mutual when you do that, more like forming a solid friendship slowly and inevitably becoming something else and less like you keep pushing on him and getting little back b/c he seemingly just gets overwhelmed and goes into freeze instead), and I think rye is a pretty hard person to read at the best of times even though he's been Down Real Bad from pretty early on and their chemistry as people is naturally really good. so the way the almost-kiss plays out in this playthrough feels a lot like it has the added layer of lucanis realizing that no but for sure rook is flirting and not just being kind or a good friend* it IS actually happening it's not just wishful/fearful thinking!!! and then uh. maybe going a bit too hard a bit too fast in all the excitement at that revelation haha

*in lucanis' defense he has seemingly literally never had a friend who wasn't his cousin-brother before, under those circumstances I suppose some confusion is extremely natural if not outright expected lmao
