7. What is an aspect of their appearance that you like the most?

midas' lack of (visible) face is easily my favorite part of her design, it adds to the dehumanization and mysticism surrounding her character. she's a walking corpse without a name or a face :-)

it's kinda hard to say for danilo, its design is supposed to look plain and boring so ToT i think i have to say its hairstyle, since i do have notes for myself to convey their emotional state through their hair

i also like akira's hair. another intentionally bad hairstyle to convey a bit of the character lol. but my favorite about her is of course her stitches, they're her core design element after all and shows a bit on how her ability works

12. Do you have a playlist for the character? What songs do you associate with them and why?

for this trio i have a playlist that has songs that fits at least one of them, so it's a trail mix rather than a dedicated playlist. some songs there that fit all three of them are:

2. How long was the process before the character reached its final version? (or a version that would be clearly recognizable as the character?)

midas' process of creation was hilariously and needlessly convoluted. i've talked about it previously here. tl;dr: her conception went as far back as 2022 but it never came into concrete creation until early this year

design-wise, it went through quite a few iterations. i kept getting unhappy with its design, but i think i'm finally happy with this one

danilo was also a funny one, although quicker. here's a quick one that i just now realized i never uploaded here:

they weren't supposed to be any more than "haha funny priest gets off to pain" one-note character, and a lot of their character traits that i wrote down when i uploaded them on artfight were mostly quick thoughts that i had no real plans for, but unexpectedly a lot of those traits come together very, very seamlessly. from their near-perfect memory (caused a major conflict with their daughter), their distaste of wealth, even their scars and the choice they made to be a priest. they're a very happy accident :-)

my first ever art of them vs the "transition" process to where we're at now. around this time i've also started to solidify their character, so i decided a mildly awful hairstyle like their current mullet thing would be fitting

creation date wise, akira is the oldest of the bunch. she was initially created as a jjk oc on early 2022, and i've posted her exactly once at that year lol. she was initially created to be paired with kenjaku as well as nao. i thought it would be fun if kenjaku were to meet someone who's so like them yet they hold no respect for, i always love hypocrisy in character writing

like midas, her character took a backseat because i was still fixating on ko around that time (more specifically developing ko's jjk au), but this year i've exported her to an original story with both danilo and midas. these three were created completely separated from the others and weren't intended to be in the same story at all, but their character works like turning gears with one another and now they're grinding my brain

jjk akira didn't have much going for her besides her cursed technique. like the other two, akira's finalization took time this year. when driving an idea struck me to frame akira's curiosity for life in a different way than kenjaku's: hunger. rather than intellectual curiosity, akira's drive for knowledge is something more primal, seeing herself and others as no less or more than animals, and she's made herself an apex predator to learn about it all firsthand. from heart to liver, from fat to blood

My Crane Wives pins arrived and here are my thoughts on them!

(NOTE: I forgot to put something in these photos for scale. The circular part of the “axe” pin is exactly the size of a US quarter. Both the “wolf” and the “crown” pins are a bit bigger than a quarter. The “lantern” pin is like a quarter inch taller than a quarter.)

They’re all packaged individually, and the backing boards are adorable.

I didn’t notice many flaws with them, no chipped or missing enamel, although some of the enamel (mostly in the smaller spaces) looked a little sloppy. All of the backing boards are a little scuffed. They’re coated in a material that scratches extremely easily though, so I’m not really concerned about it.

They are decently heavy and don’t feel like they will fall apart if I look at them funny, but I will lyk if they do get damaged.

I thought it was silver, but the metal base is actually gold! (Gold colored, not gold metal)

The backing for the pins is just your generic pin backing, which I’m not a big fan of. I’ve had issues with pins falling off of these backings in the past. Even though these ones seem to fit well, I will be keeping an eye out for those “locking” ones that are really hard to get off.

In order of my favorite to least favorite, it goes:

1. Crown (Queen of Nothing)

This pin doesn’t really have any small, hard-to-fill-with-enamel spots, so I think this one is the best.

2. Wolf (maybe The Wolf? There’s no mentions of pocket watches in the song as far as I’m aware. Maybe a new song?)

This pin looks great except for the watch face, where the white enamel was put in kinda sloppily and got on the tiny hour lines.

3. Lantern (I’m gonna be honest I have no clue what song this is, Canary in a Coal Mine maybe? Or… new song?)

I like this one, but the metal parts of the bird skeleton are gold and the enamel parts are black and it just… looks kind of weird up close

4. Axe (Nobody)

While they are correct in calling this an axe, it is a hatchet in the song. Which is kind of like calling a square a rectangle, like, you’re right, but there is a better word to use. Haha.

All the little bumps on the tentacles clutter up the design a lot, and you can’t really see the white underside of the tentacles because of all the suckers either.

Despite how critical I am, I like these pins and think they are worth buying if you’ve been eyeballing them like I had. Hey, at least now you can buy all four of them at once now! Haha.

I just wanted to post this because it can be really hard to find photos of their merch. So if you just like looking at pictures of anything The Crane Wives related, here are some more photos of the pins!

Hayloft II by Mother Mother- Setting the stage for this season, it's unhinged in an angsty way is how I describe it.

Tongues and Teeth by The Crane Wives- Cleo burning the forest. Yes this one is specific, but it does double as the vibes of the Fairy Fort alliance.

Who Are You Really? by Mikky Ekko- The southlands alliance. Just them.

Born2Run by Penelope Scott- This is later in the season when things are picking up and there's more drama.

Bad Girls by M.I.A.- Gaslight, gatekeep, and girlboss because they deserve it <3

Curses by The Crane Wives- Scar? I want it to be Scar. "There's still cobwebs in the corners, and the backyard's full of bones" he is lonely and it makes me sad

Feel Better by Penelope Scott- Bdubs. Bdubs and Etho omg. "But someone loved me, someone fucking loved me"

Goodbye by Bo Burnham- Scott as his winner's song. I feel like Scott finished the series realizing he was now alone even though he won.

Smokey Eyes by Lincoln- Once again we begin with the overall feel of the season.

Canary in a Coal Mine- haha rancher duo, I love them, I'm not over the canary curse STILL being real after 4 seasons, wtf man

You and Me by Lifehouse- A nice song for the healthy relationship that is clock duo. Also it mentions clocks. (I specifically have the extended wedding song version lol)

Too Close by Sir Chloe- This one is desert duo and Ren and bigb, but I really think it's from Scar's POV "you get too close, take the one I love the most"

Burning Pile by Mother Mother- Boat boys. The ship burns everything burns. Yep.

No Children by The Mountain Goats- Listen to this in the context of double life and tell me it's not Scott and Pearl. "I hope I cut myself shaving tomorrow, I hope it bleeds all day long"

Limited Life (very unfinished):

Never Be Alone by Shadrow- I know, I know, but hear me out. This season feels very watcher-y and also brings back the boogeyman and just feels like everyone has to be on edge at all times.

Fighting With The Melody by Jimmy Urine- honestly idk I just brought this one over from my C!Grian playlist because it fit. "Welcome to your fate, end of the line" and "You are so dead, dancing with the enemy"

Hell's Comin' With Me by Poor Man's Poison- I have this down for TIES, but mostly Impulse since he made it to the end, idk

Problems by Mother Mother- The bad boys yeeeaaaaahhhhhh. "I am a sinner, you are a saint" among other lines.

Oh yeah pal, the wolf monologue basically made the film for me. Like before I was just like "This is an interesting weird movie I guess" but after that I was like "Oh god. Oh fuck." Like personally I'm more of a scorpion person, I've been obsessed with them since a young age and also playing HIKEBACK, a psychological horror / sci-fi short visual novel about abuse and change (or the ability to), did something to me that no other story will ever be able to do, and that game used Aesop's scorpion and the frog as character themes (it can even be seen in the designs now that I think about it) and metaphors. And also I'm like weirdly obsessed with that pop culture retelling of the fable, where the scorpion doesn't sting the frog and says that it can't choose its nature but it can control its actions or something like that? I also have a love/hate relationship with the original fable because on one hand I'm like "REAL SHIT 👀👀👀???" and on the other I am like "When I die I will take a book of these fables with me and I will hit Aesop really hard with it every afternoon for the rest of eternity because this fable is wrong and goes against all my convictions and ideals and it is imperative to my wellbeing that Aesop is aware of that."

But anyway wolves are cool too, it's just that, I don't know, I just hate relating to wolves because if I say it, people will surely think that I'm one of those weird guys who are like "Oh I'm a total wolf I'm a Super Mega Alpha Male haha lol". Or they'll think that I'm saying that they're like cool and badass and majestic and I'm too. But what I am in fact saying is "I was born with; or perhaps was made to grow; metaphorical claws and teeth so sharp they bite when they should kiss and cut when they should pet. My love is caustic and smells of burning plastic, it bites and takes and tears your throat out until there's nothing left of you to give to me, to nurture my empty body with. My hair raises at the tiniest sound and my heart is always racing to run or fight. I'm a wild animal, a pack animal, but I'm rabid." you know?

and Dog Teeth by Nicole Dollanganger (actually I'm mildly sure this one is supposed to be about sexual assault but I can't really be sure sure about it and personally I don't treat it as that kind of song but as a general thing. Mostly because I can relate to "You're cold on the inside, there's a dog in your heart, and it tells you to tear everything apart." and actually a lot of the lyrics in general.)

Bitten by Patrick Wolf (lol), which yeah talks about being bitten and stuff but isn't really focused on that. Honestly I just like the song.

Tongues and Teeth by The Crane Wives, which is also pretty vague in terms of metaphors but it fits the general concept.

I've already heard a few of these - Funnily enough, "Wolf Like Me" is my favorite TV on the Radio song! I also love "I Know Im a Wolf" and "Dog Teeth"!! Im excited to listen to the rest <3

I really like the Scorpion and the Frog fable too! That "nature vs self determination" debate is really close to my own heart.

I also definitely feel you on relating to wolves in that way, especially the bit about “having claws and teeth” that accidentally hurt others. My connection to wolves isn't some macho lone-wolf deal, it's about trauma, overcoming your own nature and life obstacles, and inner strength though I'm now starting to get more into my relationship with my patron deity, Fenrir.
