5 Older Anti LO Asks

1. I'm gonna say something controversial here: I don't mind LO's depiction of Zeus for the most part. Portraying him as a self-absorbed asshole who rarely owns up to his mistakes and sleeps around with any pretty woman he sees (including ones who are only complying due to pressure like Aphrodite) is pretty in-character to the myths. And Zeus was the closest thing to a main antagonist (besides Hades)  the original hymn had, what with him selling Persephone off to Hades without her or Demeter's consent. So I don't mind him being an antagonist in LO.

But!

If you want to make Zeus the bad guy... maybe don't write your story in a way that makes him seem more in the right than HxP???? The whole trial is framed as Zeus just being a petty coward who breaks up Hades and Persephone not for any justifiable reasons, but because he's afraid Hades or Apollo will use Persephone's power to usurp him. It's played out as if Zeus doesn't actually have a leg to stand on in persecuting Persephone when he very much does??? Persephone committed mass murder and then ran away when asked to stand trial. If anything, Zeus only banishing her to clean up her mess, like she should have from the beginning on, is remarkably gracious on his part. We've seen multiple times in the comic that he could've done worse and just flat-out could have made her an example like Prometheus for her crimes.

2. I haven't kept up with LO in the slightest, so I'm almost jealous of you guys who've actually been able to read along and see the hilarious shit crop up because the schadenfreude--unfortunately I cant bring myself to catch up because to me, LO isn't like, interesting but bad, it's just ugly, stiff art and super boring and stilted writing with occasional thigh-slappingly funny garbage takes on the mythos. I'm addicted to this blog like the morning newspaper, however, so thanks, mod!

3. The constant mentions of how “beautiful” Persephone is doesn’t help when Rachel seems to be using it as “proof” she’s the best goddess ever for it? Like we do not see her intelligence, or goals, or any sort of discernible personality to make everyone so obsessed with, so we’re supposed to just go off how horny she’s made everyone else over Persephone and that’s it? Which as you said, that’s a bit 🤔 when Persephone is fundamentally the more boring design and isn’t even unique in comic.

4. I just love how RS claims LO is “for adults” when it’s so obviously written for a tween/child audience. I’m sorry but everything about it from the art to writing choices are so painfully child friendly. 1. “Duet” from the Flash or “Mayheim of the Music Meister” from Batman the Brave and the Bold?

“Mayhem of the Music Meister”. “Duet” pissed me off so much on so many different levels. The fact that they think making an original character whose powers aren’t even music-based and just slapping the name “Music Meister” on him is enough to make fans of him happy, as well as the fact that it has Kara and her abusive dickhead boyfriend Mon-El get back together after a day of being broken up (for VERY good reasons) just made me furious enough that I couldn’t enjoy one single part of it.

2. Do you like the arrowverse? If so what’s your favorite show?

Nope. I loved the first season of Supergirl (in spite of a few problems), but then the CW got its hands on the show and completely destroyed what it was.

3. First comic read?

A UK reprint of Batman. It was already about halfway through “Hush”, but I followed along relatively easily and really enjoyed it.

4. What introduced you to the DC universe? Was it a show, comic or movie?

I think it was the New Batman Adventures cartoon, but it might have also been the 60s show (which got repeated a lot on TV over here).

5. Favorite character?

A three-part tie between Batman, Cassandra Cain and Stephanie Brown.

6. Favorite cannon ship?

Tim/Steph.

7. Favorite non-cannon ship?

Raven/Cassandra Cain.

8. Pre-N52 or N52?

Pre-N52, of course. Anything good in the N52 (of which there were very few) could have happened without the N52 (and, in some cases, like the basic story of the Court of Owls, would have been better if they had).

9. Rebirth or N52?

Rebirth. There’s still a lot wrong (the treatment of Cass and Steph, for one), but overall, it’s most definitely a step in the right direction.

10.  Death in the Family or Death of Superman?

Hmmmm, both have their good and bad points. “Family” paved the way for Tim, but “Superman” paved the way for Steel and Superboy. I think I’ll go with Death of Superman, though, purely because Death in the Family had the whole “vote to kill or save Jason” thing, which was quite the hot mess.

DCAU, definitely. However, while I hated Man of Steel and Suicide Squad and really didn’t like Dawn of Justice, I loved Wonder Woman, so I’m hoping we’re on track with the DCEU (though I still refer to it as the DCCU, because I’m pedantic).

I love them all, but Batman has a slight edge.

Hoo, boy, that’s a can of worms. Initially, yes. I actually didn’t mind it. It was a goofy show that wasn’t meant to be anything other than that. It sucked that it was on and Young Justice (which had gotten a lot better with Season 2) was constantly sidelined and then cancelled, but I tried not to let that affect how I watched the show. Then they started insulting fans of the old Teen Titans show and getting progressively more mean-spirited. I dropped it like a hot potato the second that happened.

Tim Drake.

23. So you prefer Superman and Wonder Woman, Batman and Wonder Woman, steve Trevor and Wonder Woman or does it even matter?

I’m okay with Batman and Wonder Woman, but honestly, I’ve never been a particularly big fan of any of them. The Superman and Wonder Woman pairing needs to die in a fire, though.

Harper Row. In her first few appearances, I really liked her and she definitely has a lot of potential. However, throughout “Batman Eternal” and “Batman and Robin Eternal”, she was shilled constantly, especially at the expense of Stephanie and Cassandra, and it’s infuriating.

I love Superman: The Animated Series, but Batman: The Animated Series is just amazing.

Batman Beyond. I never really watched Legion of Superheroes.

Neither. I hated both of them.

Yep, but it’s awful and like watching a trainwreck. Season 4 is marginally better (props for actually getting someone who isn’t white to play Ra’s al Ghul, even if they’re still butchering the pronounciation), but it’s still a dumpster fire.

Mostly. I’ve hated what they’ve done with Spider-Man ever since One More Day (which turned Peter into a villain, because only villains makes deals with the devil, especially once that erase a child from existence), and the whole “Jubilee’s a vampire thing” is crap (Jubilee is my favourite character, and the fact that she lost her powers but freakin’ Peepers got to keep his is atrocious), and let’s not even get started on Nick Spencer and his bullshit. But there’s still a lot I do like.

Jon Kent. Damian has grown on me (even if there’s been this disturbing “Damian is Bruce’s one true son” trend in the comics lately), but Jon is just adorable.

With Titans, I’m quite bitter that we’re probably not getting Cyborg, and I’m worried about the age difference between Raven’s actress and the rest of the cast (they should all be the same age).

I’m really not good with reading super flowery books. I just have a really short attention span so most books that I’ve seen that are really into the description (eg: Uprooted, The Night Circus,) have literally no plot so I just switch off.

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Steifvater. TWO AND A HALF MONTHS. All I read in between finishing BLLB and the release of TRK was a reread of Carry On (see, I told you I’ve read it a lot.)

To say that Bucky was surprised when Clint kissed him was an understatement. But it was nothing compared to the shock he felt when he learned they'd been dating for months without him realizing it. Clint gets whisked away for a mission before they have time to talk and Bucky is left to figure things out on his own - hindsight being 20/20 he can't help but wonder how he missed things the first go around.

things I wanna see the midpollo family do:

just.. family shenanigans. harmlessly judging each other, teasing, inside jokes, pranks—just. act like a family.

parkouring through an entire city, forests, and even outer space until they're all tired and laughing and feeling carefree because they're all daredevils who can do whatever they want and no one to stop them, so why not live dangerously—but not their usual kind of life-or-death danger; the danger of not using your power to stop your fall because you know it won't hurt you at all—for a moment or several?

m & apollo letting jenny go to sleepovers and any kind of adventures with friends because they know she can take of herself and her friends from anyone and/or anything, but they also know that if she needed help she won't hesitate to call them.

( midnighter opening his snapchat and sees that his daughter and her friends went to a literal abandoned place in hopes of finding ghosts; "hey there demons, it's me," he hears jenny says in the snap, and even though the place is dark and the snap is grainy and unfocused, he can hear the shiteating grin she no doubt have on her face. so that's where they were all night. he shows the snap to apollo so he'd know what kind of souvenir jenny would bring later when she comes home; she always brings weird souvenirs. apollo empties one of the small jars he always denies he have for his own souvenirs and puts it in her room. )

( jenny ends up making a conspiracy theory/detective team with her friends because why not? )

parent-teacher meetings. just... parent-teacher meetings with apollo & m.

going to concerts together and both jenny & m end up filming apollo in mosh pits (not that they dont participate themselves, too, because they do but the one who does it the most is apollo).

jenny being supported by her dads. apollo & m being supported by her because shes proud of the healing progress they make every day.

a competitive game of charades against shen, angie, and habib bc none of them can act but they're all really stubborn and dont wanna lose.

going to pride parades and peaceful protests together because these things matter so much to them.

just... i want them to be a normal family!!!

oh boy, it's a complicated mess. wildstorm's jenny q and rebirth jenny q are so different in origins and ages they might be two different people entirely.

this is very long so its under the cut !!! and i apologize in advance if it doesnt make a lick of sense at all.

— wildstorm's ending:

the last time we've ever seen jenny q in wildstorm comics was during one of WS's last hurrah of a storyline called number of the beast, where we see her wrap her arms around the carrier's uncaged and dangerous powersource, the miniaturized universe.

before that, it seems like the writers had already decided her fate by showing that very same scene in a comic that came out before notb; it was shown in midnighter: armageddon where midnighter traveled to the future and was told what happened to his daughter by none other than an older and more rough-looking apollo:

we never saw her in wildstorm's comics after that, and she was only mentioned in passing a few times iirc.

— rebirth/n52:

jenny quantum appears in dc rebirth's stormwatch (2011), which is a complete reboot of the authority and some other wildstorm characters. it is nothing like the 90s-00s origins of the authority that we all know. in this reboot, jenny q ( full name jennifer emily quantum ) was raised by stormwatch in a space station and was never adopted by midnighter and apollo. she's a whole 12 years old in this reboot and was mentored mostly by martian manhunter and some other guy.

basically, to summarize the entire comic: it's bad in every way imaginable — not "shock value" bad ( although midnighter did try to kill jenny because he thought she was dangerous and she, in return, blackmails him so many times to "keep him in line" or some shit like that ) but still pretty fucking Bad. 

again: we never see her after this because for some reason, dc must really hate her for 1) killing / making her disappear without a trace in notb, 2) throwing her in comic limbo in rebirth.

this may not make absolute sense so, again, i'm sorry about it.

jenny q saves the wildstorm universe and stops the world from ending by 1) stablizing the caged universe inside the carrier and thus not making it a danger to anyone, keeping the carrier away from earth so it doesnt crash land there; 2) banishing those responsible for the apocalypse to another dimension where they cannot and will not return no matter what. 

thus ensuring that the entire wildstorm universe still exists. up until the flashpoint event happens. that's when WS universe gets inducted into the dc multiverse. ( behind the scene fun fact: wildstorm was officially purchased by dc comics in 2010, and flashpoint happened year later, in 2011. ) mind you, jenny q is WS' most powerful character because she can literally manipulate reality at the very seams. so she can pretty much do anything she puts her mind and heart to.

that means WS universe exists but separately from the main continuity.

but by some cosmic mishap or another, the authority ( and all the other wildstorm characters that appeared in rebirth ) got stuck in dc's main continuity timeline, prime earth, and cannot go back to their own universe. so now the authority exists in the main timeline.

the team isnt defunct by any means necessary but they arent as together anymore, after years of living in prime earth. they come together sometimes when the need arises but other than that, shen and angie are happily together somewhere in the world, habib, apollo, midnighter, and jenny q are somewhere else. jack doesnt exist in this because i said so.

( steve orlando's midnighter + m&a still happens though because that's some very important character development !! )

so yeah, there ya have it !! my perfectly (in)coherent idea of how jenny q can exist in dc's main continuity !! ( and how you can have m and apollo in the continuity as well without fucking up their original backstories. )

dc wants what i have. ( i dont know where this puts the wild storm comic but that exists too, somehow in some way it does, dont question it. )
