Unburied - That's cool, he says kind of sing-songishly. Don't be fooled, he really is intrigued by this development in your character. To him, it's just something that makes you that much more interesting, more of a puzzle to solve.

ZY - Really? Oh, that's going to make this new friendship very stimulating. He likes having to work for an answer. Too often, people are dangerously easy to read. But you? He's going to take his time trying to figure out every angle of you, for better or worse.

Dano - Hm, thank you for telling him. He thought he could sense some kind of special connection between two people with similar experiences. btw, if you choose to tell him about your past trouble with social groups, he has immediately taken it upon himself to relieve your anxiety whenever possible. Gotham - Ah, I see, very interesting. Filing that one away in the "Things I Know About My Friends" cabinet. Like with most things, he wants to hear everything you can tell him, about your experiences, tendencies, etc.

BTAA - Finally! Someone who isn't just going to hit him with the same dumb questions (Why riddles? How'd you come up with your name? What's your show size?). He's gotten so bored with the general population. He welcomes your presence with open arms! Please! For the love of everything evil, say something that will make him have to think about an answer!!

Arkham - Join the club! I mean, he was never diagnosed (blame that on a very poor childhood), but I think most can agree that there are some indicators in his general behavior. He also finds difficulty in engaging in social interactions, so that's something you two can bond over. Right after you hand him that wrench and make it snappy.

BTAS - At first, it's not something he thinks about too much. Just another aspect of your character to consider. But then he realizes that you're different and in a very delightful way. You see his puzzles differently. Finish his games in a different way. Look at things from vibrantly new angles. And suddenly, he wants you around all the time when he's up to his newest scheme.

Telltale - Interesting, and what does that mean? He's not trying to be an asshole (even if it looks and sounds that way). He wants to hear from your mouth what that means for you. In his own strange and standoffish way, he's trying to get to know you better. Whether that's for your or his benefit is yet to be seen, but ya know.

Eddie was little more than a distraction to what you wanted to do now, it was as if every time he got out of Arkham he found his way back to you.

He smiled fondly at your annoyed expression and gave you a hug. The constriction threatened to snap you in half. If you'd been able to feel your fingers you would've felt the blood flow begging for some release.

“Hello my dear friend, it's been quite a while since I'd seen you last.”

“It's been three weeks Edward.”

He shrugged off the comment with a bashful grin. Then took you from the goons he had bring you up, merely waving them off as he rather quickly pulled you over to his desk.

Having been friends with Edward since before he'd moved from New York to Gotham you knew his excitement better than anyone. As he sat you down in the chair, harsher than he'd meant to he made his way over to his side.

“Care to tell me why you can't just wait for another probationary period Edward? I visited you the last time you warned me about the blackmail.” You didn't want to be there at all, and looking into the almost watery green eyes of your friend it was clear he did.

Feigning ignorance Edward rolled his eyes, “Why would I ever actually blackmail you? You're far too important to me.”

“I must be given this is the eighth time you’ve kidnapped-“

He interjected,

“Borrowed!”

You deadpanned before continuing,

“Kidnapped, me.��

His brows furrowed harshly, nose twitching as he shuffled his elbows inward. The tension in his fists were obvious, as was the same tension in his neck.

“I don’t want to play this with you. I just borrowed-“ he stood slowly, lights from outside casting the front of his body in darkness. “You.”

You nodded as you saw him do the same.

“Okay Edward.”

“Eddie.” He corrected dangerously, regaining absolute control of the situation.

You held your breath in for a moment to keep yourself from shaking.

“Okay Eddie.”

He sat back down slowly, never taking his eyes off of you. They seemed to bite into your soul, searching for the very moment you’d decide to flee.

“I'm thinking of my next caper.” he started, strongly.

You fiddled with your pants before nodding, pursed lips.

“Yeah that's uhh, kinda bad Eddie.”

“I can’t exactly control what my mind wants me to do. It becomes so bad I feel the need to pick at myself if I don’t plan.” He stood from his chair and dramatically went through the movements, going on a tangent about how the feelings just build until they burst.

“Is there anyway I can help…” you paused, he turned around intrigued by what you were saying.

“With the… building?” You we’re unsure of how you phrased that, the words coming out awkward. But he seemed to understand.

His eyes widened and he seemed brighter than before.

“Well well well, look who’s coming into their own!” He smiled slyly before turning to his bookshelf, you meanwhile looked for an escape.

Every window was sealed. There were guards outside, Eddie could practically read your mind, and knew that you never actually went to the restroom when you were uncomfortable with something.

“Okay!”

He set a pen and paper down in front of you before nearly organizing the books in front of him. He pulled a map of Gotham out of his shirt right after, setting the paper before you.

You looked up incredulously, desperately searching for an answer as Eddie leaned on the table happily staring at you.

“What is this?”

“Planning!”

“For what?!”

“You’re not stupid my friend do try and fit the pieces in with one another.” He leaned in and kept the map open with one arm and pushed your chair in with the other. From here you could feel him shaking with glee, the previous tension forgotten.

You tried to forget that you were making plans for a supervillain here, and tried to imagine all the times you’d spent with one another.

“How abouuut…” You tried thinking only to feel like your brain was useless. You drew blanks, pushing the paper away with one hand as Edward stared, concerned back at you.

“I’m no good at this stuff Eddie, maybe I can help give you tools, or run you coffee. Like a secretary!” This was partially to arouse sympathy from your old friend, but also to find a way to leave and not speak to him again.

“To have you mitigated to a secretary as my best friend?” He looked bluntly at you, “that’s stupid,” he snatched the pencil from your hand, and grabbed the paper. “You start with one idea. Then add on, you don’t give up if you don’t have it right away. Now throw somthing out there.”

You fumbled, and he began to hum a tune from a game show he knew, counting down your time. It reminded you of nights where the two of you would go over Flashcards for tests.

“Nuclear Fission!”

He ‘oohed’, impressed by the quick and out of the box thinking, and he quickly jotted the idea down

The next few were rapid fire rounds.

“The starry night-“

“Colour theorem.”

“Absurdism!”

“EDWARD PUT DOWN THE DAMN NORTHERN LIGHTS!!!”

By the end of the night the two of you were down a bottle and a half of whiskey, with a plan that only required word play, and machinery.

You leaned against the man with an arm over his shoulder as you reminisced your childhood.

“I missed this Eddie, you always were great company.”

He smiled earnestly, his readers glasses slipping down his nose as he undid his tie. “You were always like a younger sibling to me, it’d only make sense for me to wanna spend time with you…”

He trailed off, then grew somber.

“I’m sorry.”

You tilted your head in confusion, and he put a hand on your shoulder. “For the interruptions, and the blackmail… I really-“ he turned his head as his voice cracked. You could tell he was getting emotional, so you pulled him in for a hug.

The two of you set to sleep that night, Ed in his armchair, you on the couch. And you began to wonder if helping him with riddles would really be all that bad.

BNHA Rewatch: Season 1 Episode 6 “Rage, You Damn Nerd”

Episode 6, with the best most hilarious title ever! Tells you exactly what you’re in for.

Finally, Bakugo’s reaction! I seriously was waiting through all three episodes for this. Like a Hitchcockian bomb under the table. Almost literally!

Bakugou .exe has stopped working.

Aizawa starts his pattern of lying to Class A to get them to do their best. He kinda stops doing this after a while, I’m guessing because it doesn’t take lying anymore, just let Wonder Duo go running off at the mouth and they’ll do the job just as well.

Momo’s first line! I think we’re introduced to her in a method meant to make her seem a bit smug and condescending, which is interesting - Momo has a similar trajectory to Bakugou in some ways, introduced as Hot Shit and embarrassment used to break that ego, so this is important to keep in mind.

Aizawa and All Might seemed like they were gonna have a rivalry in early drafts and that got dropped. Anyway, I’m noting the timeline here, as All Might drops the info that this is April 8 (April Fool’s day was Last Week).

The friendship trio forms! Yay! (BTW I ship Uraraka and Iida, if you didn’t know.) We get a quick sum up of life at UA (sob why can’t my school be more like this) and then transfer on to the start of the Battle Trial Arc. Here it goes!

Everyone’s in costume! I figured I’d use my fave Costumes for my ranker today, so I’ll comment on them below. (BTW I loved this arc a lot the first time around. I adored how perfect it feels as a simulated Heroes v Villains exercise.)

All the detailed info on designing costumes and enrolling quirks is another thing I enjoy about BNHA; it feels like such a well-realized world, probably the most fully realized one I’ve encountered in some ways. Horikoshi is so obsessive over details, I love it.

And it actually serves as a means to illustrate character. Since they designed the costumes themselves, everyone’s choices tell you a little something about who they are. I think that both Deku and Kacchan’s costumes are designed to look like All Might’s - both have pointy hoods like his spiky hair, both have metal gear around the neck, etc. They look alike, yet opposite.

Deku’s first costume is so doofy looking, though. And it’s kind of symbolic of his whole issue at this point: he wants too badly to be like All Might, so he covers up his own face with a mask that has this weird, distorted fascimile of All Might’s hair and smile. He really needs to up that confidence! 

This is followed by an adorable sequence of All Might trying to be a teacher and explaining the rules of the BTA. I totally empathize with All Might here; starting at a new job like this can’t be easy. (now I’m thinking about the “Even Idiots Can be Teachers” joke in Episode 52 and laughing)

I wish there was more to comment on with the BTA teams. A few of them feel important. Kaminari and Jirou, of course; one of my ships, they hang out a lot. Also , Ojiro/Tooru, and Tsuyu/Tokoyami get teamed up here (but not Momo and Shoto or Kiri/Mina, so I refuse to call it a shipping pattern). Ashido and Aoyama have a bit of a rivalry going on that starts here. Everyone else’s is pretty random.

And now the fated showdown of destiny! Well, the first time, anyway. I could watch these two fight all day. The whole series could just be them fighting each other back and forth and yelling while YSR plays and I’d be fine.

Bakugou is so salty about Deku! The first time around, of course, he just comes across as an asshole. Rewatching it though, it does seem fairly reasonable to be pissed off that Deku’s apparently been lying to him this whole time (because he doesn’t know about OFA, and Deku didn’t even both to lie to him like he did to his mom), and they are fighting in an organized combat mission, so his behavior here makes total sense in hindsight. Amazing how that character development works.

Uraraka is initially really blase about doing well. in hindsight, I think one of her flaws (at this stage, anyway) was that she basically didn’t know what she wanted and pretty much coasted on Deku (she says as much during the sports festival). She gets over that quickly, but flaws make good characters, so I wanted to point it out.

Incoming Deku “Kacchan Sugoi” moment #1. I love this little twist, too, on the way we perceive Deku. He doesn’t want revenge on Katsuki or something like that. He wants to beat him (”the incarnation of victory”). Deku is not some frail flower needing protection from the world. Don’t let his cuteness fool you.

Deku is so effing cool here, TBH - brilliant, tactical, strong, and brings his rival down to earth by judo-tossing him. Damn, the animation on Baku hitting the floor though, you can feel that impact. No wonder he was so pissed! (Deku’s strategic mind is one of my favorite things about him. Also the symbolism in Baku blasting away part of his All Might mask! 1/2 of the whole!)

“From now on, Deku is the name of my hero!” Once again that trio of foil-y ness between Deku, Kacchan and Uraraka. I wonder if it’s a relic of when the series was originally gonna be them as a trio, a la Naruto/Harry Potter/etc, so they were designed to all foil each other in some way? It’s not as much in the series proper, but it’s interesting nonetheless. Also, You Say Run! Down the bottle! (3rd episode in a row).

In sum, I love this episode. Costumes! All Might teaching! The Battle Trial Arc! Bakugou being crazy (I mostly gush over Deku a lot, but I love Kacchan too. Crater-sized faults and all). And of course, all of the...

BKDK Corner:

Cute flashbacks! Adorable flashbacks are adorable. Little Bakugou is so arrogant; if he was an adult he would be insufferable, but because he’s just a kid it’s cute.

Now to get into a little analysis! This ep marks the first time we actually delve into the depths of Bakugou’s psyche, and basically to sum it up: He’s scared of Deku because he deep down knows that Deku is better than him, fearing that Deku will surpass him, and doesn’t understand why. It’s amazing how the characters introduced at this part of the series as simple archetypes (relatable hero, bully, nice girl, uptight boy) become so complex as the series goes on. Not to be taken at face value.

Uraraka changing the meaning of Deku is another moment that parallels the Deku/Kacchan and Deku/Ochaco dynamics. Again, I’m not sure what that means in the long run, only that paralleling Izuku’s romance subplot with his main rivalry has interesting implications.  

“So, you know Bakugou? He’s kind of mean to you, right?” ‘“Yes but he’s also super amazing special awesome and cool and did I mention amazing? Let me present my eighty page thesis to you on why Kacchan is cool.” OK, exaggerating. But it is interesting how much Deku admires and looks up to Kacchan despite him being such a jerk, so seemingly the opposite of what Deku wants to be as a hero. Basic 2 sides/same coin stuff, of course. Kacchan has all the self-assurance, power and pride that Deku lacks (at least at this point).

Deku speaks fluent Kacchan and predicted exactly what he would do. He knows his S/O so well. 

“I took notes on all amazing heroes, including you” Subtle, Deku. Wanna make your crush a little more obvious? (also check out the BNHA smash comic of this, where he takes it up a notch and reveals what a full-blown stalker he actually is).

This is definitely their lowpoint of antagonism, though. This early part of the series, where they’re both mad at each other. I do think that Deku never really hated Bakugou, though; he hates things about him, but not him as a person. (Deku is way too forgiving.)  Bakugou hated him, but I think that’s fading away in the current timeline (so weird, the last time we saw these two in the manga they were chilling on a couch together and drinking tea. Such a crazy contrast with rewatching this!)

5. Nejire Hado’s!

I’m not sure why, but she has one of my favorite costumes of the whole series. it looks so good on her, it’s simple and tells you who she is.

4. Izuku Midoriya’s (3.0)!

Deku’s third costume is amazing and looks cool. It’s sleek and powerful and badass, somehow taking that dopey baseline design and turning it awesome.

3. Camie Utsushimi’s!

It’s so simple yet so great. Bodysuit, white boots and that awesome Shiketsu hat. Yet it works. It looks cool, even with the boob window.

2. Katsuki Bakugo’s!

It’s so ridiculous and yet so perfect. Exactly what you’d expect Bakugo to design for his outfit. Keeping in character and suitably dark.

1. Ochaco Uraraka’s!

My favorite in the whole bunch. It looks so much like a space heroine super suit - I especially like it with the helmet. It’s all there for her quirk, too - there’s an explanation behind each piece of gear. (BTW, Bakugou and Uraraka had the same designer. They really lucked out!)

Okay, I was looking through some batdad gifsets and I want to articulate something I’ve felt for a while but was kind of hesitant to say which is: why I could never really get into Batman Beyond and why when I say “I feel BTAS was a good adaptation distillation” I only mean the first part of the show, as I feel the show’s general overarching narrative went completely off the rails when they had Dick and Bruce fighting over Bruce randomly telling Babs all their secrets without including Dick.

I could never really get into Batman Beyond, because aside from not connecting all the characters, I could never get back the idea that its endgame was that Bruce literally drove away all of his children and had regressed tremendously as a character. Which is not even getting into the “oh btw Bruce dated his son’s ex who was much younger than him” bullshit, it’s just even on that premise alone? I don’t like that premise.

I realize I appear to be in disagreement with the majority of those who write Batman stories, but while Batman and the narrative that surrounds him has plenty of issues, what attracts me to the narrative is that, at its best, its kind of a story of healing and found family, at its best. It’s a story about a man who lost his family in a brutal way, and responded by finding others who’d gone through the same thing and building a new family with them. A man who responded to going through a great loss and trauma as a child by wanting to help children who were going through similar horrific loss and trauma. The best Batman stories are the ones focused on family, the ones that remember that Bruce really likes kids and connects to kids who’ve suffered in a unique way many other heroes don’t. That while he may be scary towards adult criminals, he acts a different way around children. That he reacted to finding a kid trying to steal the tires off his Batmobile by being both a) amused at the sheer moxy and b) concerned that this kid was desperate and unsupervised and continued being concerned and Not Mad even when the kid hit him with a crowbar and called him names and oh yeah he’ll end up adopting this kid.

So to me, Batman is a story about healing and finding family. It’s a rough and bumpy one, and I’m down for it to be full of Mistakes and Arguments, but I think having the end of Batman’s story being “he drove all those kids away for like, years, and they’ll never really recover” is...it’s not what I’m here for. I’m not saying it’s not a POSSIBLE end to the Batman story, but it’s not one I feel works, personally. Like yes, in BB, Bruce befriends Terry, Bruce reconciles-ish with Tim, but it’s incredibly hard for me to look at the Bruce in early seasons of BTAS- the one who told Dick that he understands the loss he’s feeling and the pain will never completely go away but it does get better,the one who told him he always has a home with him, the one who took in a random belligerent kiddie criminal and made him Robin- I can’t believe he’d every just fall out of touch and ditch his children in the first place. Not the same guy. (ESPECIALLY since the idea is “Tim was kidnapped, tortured, and deeply traumatized by the Joker and Bruce’s response to this happening was to...shut him out to the point Tim left and never wanted to talk to him again? LIKE SERIOUSLY? ARE YOU SHITTING ME WITH THIS? I mean characterization issues aside, Alfred would never let Bruce get away with that.)

And again. A lot of Batman fans don’t see the narrative like I do- Robin or Batgirl aren’t even IN most major live-action adaptations-they don’t see it as something about found family or healing, they see is at a tortured guy who will always end up alone and probably die tragically but he’s really violent and dark and cool, and that’s fine. That’s not a story I’m interested in, and it’s not that meaningful to me, but that’s fine. 

 “Bruce ends up alone” or “the family ultimately splinters for good” isn’t my jam. I want Bruce to struggle and fail as a parent and be called on his shit, but I don’t like the idea of “Bruce will always be broken and can never keep people around” because uh? fuck that? I don’t believe that? About anyone? I want to see Bruce develop, change and grow and for his kids to develop, change and grow along with him. I think Bruce is the most interesting when he’s around kids. They challenge them, have their own narratives and he bounces well off them.

Which I think is why I really liked Lego Batman and would unironically call it my fave Batman movie (alongside Mask of Phantasm)- it really GOT that. The characters were exaggerated them, but it really drove home the “Batman’s story is about healing and family” message SUPER HARD and it meant everything to actually see that in a mainstream Batman movie.

 I don’t think Bruce is gonna ever get over his trauma completely, trauma doesn’t work like that, but I want him to end up in a place where he looks around and realizes he has everything he needs, where he is content with the work he’s done, where he realizes that his ultimate triumph was not the villains he’s punched, but the kids he’s saved and the dirty cops he’s exposed and the public works he’s done for Gotham. Maybe crime is still bad, even as bad as ever, but he can retire (or die, if you wanna be edgy about it, idc) knowing thanks to his family, people will always be there to help.
