Tumblr media
I love that tumblr's notification that you got a new follower gives you the option to block them sight unseen but no option to follow with as little information

You know, I haven’t been seeing those Tumblr Blaze sponsored posts people are talking about and that’s such a shame.
I’m looking forward to experiencing PVP Tumblr.
This has been one of the most genius money making schemes Tumblr has come up with yet.
The ability to randomly propagate your curses across thousands of blogs on the cheap?
If I was in any position to take on more work then sure I might drop 10 bucks to have my commission sheet go around for a while.
You know, break up the monotony of seeing the same ads for the same product you purchased a forever ago.
No seriously I’m still upset that shortly after getting their stuff Manscaped suddenly decided to just explode their marketing all over tumblr. You already had my money, leave me alone!

Reeling over how the slow, inevitable passage of time is steadily vindicating tumblr as the social media site that both can't go away no matter how much people want it gone but also BECAUSE of that it's the only place that's not owned by a corporate big wig or throttled by awful propaganda, it's all just ball shaving ads and sponsored unregulated PvP

Tumblr Blaze is a very smart feature. It provides the userbase a service which addresses an existing need/want; the program came from direct feedback from the userbase to staff¹; it fits in neatly in the Tumblr's culture as a platform encourages polite² PVP, as we're already seeing that play out on the Prev Tag Sponsored Post; and they rolled it out smartly doing incremental user roll out to gauge actual interest, with good initial implimentation³; and the cost per impression is in line with typical industry rates of 3-10$ per 1000 so they're not overcharging for the service.
@Staff has designed an amazing fucking feature with Blaze and my only slightly negative critiques which are really more like requests
1. the Ad-free feature they'd rolled out previously should distinguish between off-site ads and on-site Blazed posts, so that I could 'see Blazed posts anyway,' while not also not seeing off-site ads. That'd be a nice interaction between the features.
2. The addition of the ability to Blaze reblogs, which would be more complicated to impliment well and so I understand why they skipped it for the feature's initial rollout, but I would like to see that also that additional functionality come to the feature eventually.
Edit, while washing my dishes, I thought of a third thing I'd like added, and maybe this just hasn't happened to me yet, but a little notification when the Blaze campaign is over would be nice; Cause I don't know if the post I've Blazed has received all the impressions promised to it yet, or if it still has a few more left to go; bonus points instead of a message saying 'all done' its a counter telling 'your post has been given X/2500 impressions so far. This feature exists. You can click on the Blaze icon under the original post to view the campaign's progress; but, it'd be nice if they put it in a hub instead of me having to track down the post and click on the fire, because that original post is several posts down; there's a lot of scrolling involved in getting to it.
¹I myself remember suggesting the idea of on platform users being allowed to buy advert spaces, to which people referred me to the advertise.tumblr.com to which I said, their budget range option floors out at <$10,000 and that isn't the kind of thing I'm talking about, I'm talking about throwing tumblr a tenner to force my nonsense on a small group of unsuspecting fellow users, and then they released Blaze, which was exactly what I was talking about. Whether or not Staff saw that exact interaction, they implimented a feature I personally was actively asking for. And then they called it Blaze and I was practically obliged to throw the fuckers(affectionate) a tenner to sponsor this post. I think I'm very funny.
²Sometimes, a lot too often, the PVP gets out of hand and you get harassment, but in my experiences, most of the PVP I've engaged in is polite enough.
³Restricting the initial roll out to just posts and not reblogs, as much as I'd want to Blaze this or that reblog was a good decision for the initial Blaze roll out, as was the decision to have every Blaze post manually reviewed and approved by a real person.
I’m so excited for tumblr blaze actually, I can’t wait for someone to pay one hundred and fifty american dollars to boost their callout post over niche fandom drama to 50,000 people chosen completely at random

starting to see push back against tumblr blaze, in specific "why are you spending money on this when you could be giving it to people who need it for groceries/new computer/rent" - 1) historically tumblr has been a TERRIBLE way to fundraise. cannot count the amount of signal boost posts i've seen, with hundreds of notes, with updates "thanks for the reblogs but i have received $0" - i don't know why this is, but it existed before blaze. the people who would spend money on blaze would likely not spend money on signal boost fundraising posts. 2) and it's not like tumblr blaze is throwing money into the ether either, for people who are trying (on this hellsite, lol) to build more of a following. ppl who pay to sponsor one of their posts are doing it first and foremost for the interactions with others, to have an audience that will see and hopefully react to the post. it is a really cheap way of getting a decent amount of interaction, and that is of benefit to some people who are interaction-starved/needy. 3) at some point tumblr needs to make money?? i actually love this angle of like gamifying the site. have seen multiple references to calling it pvp which feels right. anyone who plays games online has knowledge of micro transactions. if you've ever bought something silly in your favourite game just because it gave you a happiness burst, then just know that is pretty much tumblr blaze's function also.

ARCHIVE: TTYD
This began as a twitter thread, then later converted to a Google Doc. Now it's here on Tumblr. Remember, this was written years ago. The following may or may not reflect my current opinions. I simply wanted to post these archived thoughts online.
Paper Mario TTYD is a good game but by no means is it perfect. It's pretty flawed, and by the final world I was begging for it to end.
Here's a thread going over my thoughts on the game after having some time to think it over.
First, the things I liked. The story was good, but I was never surprised considering the whole thing was already spoiled to me. The writing was enjoyable (for the most part). I think that the combat system was fun... most of the time (I'll get to that). I like the artstyle and music. Some songs were really catchy, like Professor Frankly's theme.
The EXP system is better executed than most rpgs. Most rpgs have a static number of how much each enemy gives out, with a dynamic number of how much you need to level up.
This game reverses that. You only need 100 points to level up, but every time you level up enemies give out less xp. This helps eliminate grinding better, but even more so with how they handle what level ups even do.
When you level up, all it does is let you increase HP, FP (basically magic), or BP (let's you equip more stat boosting items at once). Attack never levels up. That makes grinding a non issue because now the game is designed always knowing what your general damage output will be.
While I still don't like EXP systems, this is one of the best examples of it, but it still has it's problems.
That's all my praise. Now for the problems, but first, a brief break for our sponsors.
This thread is sponsored by: RAID: Shadow Legends
RAID: Shadow Legends is an immersive online experience with everything you'd expect from a brand new RPG title. It's got an amazing storyline, awesome 3D graphics, giant boss fights, PVP battles, and hundreds of never before seen champions to collect and customize.

With that sponsor out of the way, it's time for my problems. This game is seriously tedious. There is so much time just walking back and forth with nothing happening. This could be cured with warps, but nope. Even worse is dungeons. No quick way to leave them.
Zelda OoT had warps and Farore's Wind on N64. No excuse for PM TTYD to not have these. You don't even unlock shortcuts until long after you've been to the world, and three worlds never even get shortcuts. Even worse is that the "shortcuts" are hardly even shortcuts at all.
The pipe to get to Petalburg normally is closer than the shortcut pipe to Petalburg. These shortcuts should have been in a house in Rogueport. Somewhere close. But no, this game had to make things more annoying than it should be.
The tedium doesn't stop at shortcuts and walking back and forth. Chapter 2 has you dealing with annoying Pikmin things called Punies. Chapter 3 gets worse because the whole thing feels like it takes forever to finish. You have to slowly work up a tournament. That's it.
The entire chapter takes place in one (very boring) building. It's so repetitive. Beat a fight. Sleep. Save. Beat a fight. Sleep. Save. It takes forever. It feels so padded. Chapter 4 is even worse. It has an interesting premise, but it was ruined by the execution.
The chapter starts up with a town full of people that got turned into pigs by an evil no named magician. You go through a forest and reach his manor and beat him up. During the fight, he turns into a shadowy Mario.
Plot twist, he stole your body at some point and now your trapped as the shadowy Mario. Now you have to go back through the forest again and talk to him. The conversation went something like this:📷
Basically you have to find out what his name is. You end up having to back and forth through that forest 4 times. It's very annoying, and even worse is that nearly every enemy puts you to sleep, and on top of that the rare battle effects occur way more often during this chapter.
It ended up being my least favorite chapter. Chapter 5 was inoffensive, but again a lot of back and forth at the start. Chapter 6 was a cool concept where the whole thing took place on a train taking you to your destination and not the destination itself.
Unfortunately it devolved to walking back and forth through identical train cars. Then Chapter 7 came around. This is most infamous. You have to backtrack to every single area in the game, and it's just as tedious as it sounds. The dungeon was pretty cool though.
Chapter 8 is the last chapter. It's just one massive dungeon. I ended up not beating the final boss because I didn't want to backtrack all the way out to replenish my items. A Farore's Wind equivalent would be so useful here, but alas. Btw, the item inventory is way too small.
By the end I was absolutely done. I wanted the game to end. I was skipping battles because I felt like I already had enough fp and hp (50 each). That's the problem with the exp system. Eventually you feel like you have enough of it's limited offerings.
I never died the whole game (until the difficulty spike at the final boss), so it wasn't very challenging. There are plenty of other smaller tedious moments I could nitpick, such as when the pianta lover said "I love you" a hundred times so you have to mash through it, but I feel like that wouldn't really be worth it. Overall, it's a fine game, but it was pretty draining to get all the way through. Calling Paper Mario TTYD perfect or something just comes off as foolish to me.
