I suppose I never got into the habit of adding a general "x reader" or "reader insert" tag to my reader insert fics because I've done them so infrequently. Mostly for events I did here on the blog. On Words of Affirmation (and positive self-talk)

I'm going to come straight out and say it: I'm not a fan of affirmations and I want to explain why ... and provide a way to approach them so that they *can* be benefiical, if you are like me.

What are Affirmations?

They can be done different ways but the simplest way to explain them is that they are words you tell yourself to help manifest the you that you want to be.

Things like "I'm successful." "I'm hard-working." "People like me." "I am a good person."

Depending on which "guru" you are following, the idea is you repeat these things to yourself, possibly even looking in the mirror, out loud, in your head, for many many minutes, possibly multiple times per day.

The belief is that by doing this, you will change the course of your life and actually become this person you are telling yourself you are. How lovely, right?

My Issues with Affirmations

The problem is ... for people who struggle with self-esteem, these words are not only useless, I believe they are harmful.

"Sure, Foggy, *words* are harmful. Ok buddy.", you may be scoffing at me.

Well, my friend, if you have followed my blog for any amount of time, you know that I believe, and know for a fact, that words have power.

And the entire idea of Affirmations is that words have power, right? The point is that they have POSITIVE power if you just say the right words and repeat them the right way and do it enough times. That's when the magic will happen.

If we believe that words of affirmation have power, then it's a simple matter to understand that power has no inherent good or bad behind it. It's all in how it's used and the effect it has on the recipient.

So How do Affirmations Hurt People?

If your self-esteem is low - and many people struggle with this, the words of affirmation will be caught by your inner critic that will say "that's not true", "that's not true", "that's not true", and it will reinforce your negative views as you actively reject the very words of praise that you are sending your own way.

Then, the subconscious says "this stuff is supposed to work but it doesn't work on me. I'm a complete loser. Nothing works for me. I'm forever miserable and I suck."

I feel for you if this is you. <3

In essence, for people struggling with self-esteem, words of praise and affirmation make you feel like shit.

That's Depressing. Is There Any Hope?

If you are nodding your head and feeling what I've been saying so far, there is hope for you and, with a small adjustment, you can make affirmations work for you.

The key is two-fold:

1 - Start with known, positive truths about yourself. Depending on where your head is, these might be super tiny little things but find something and start there.

"I have made it to this point in life. I have survived a horrible childhood."

"I love listening to music."

"I love watching <insert favorite tv show or youtube creator or whatever>."

You know you. Figure out those small, TRUE, positive-minded facts about yourself. Repeat them as often as you want.

Definitely think of THEM next time your mind starts berating yourself. And bonus points if you go and do something you like instead of letting your mind beat you up when it goes to that dark place.

2 - Sprinkle in thoughts about ACTIONS you are taking. Focus on the effort, not the destination.

Instead of "I'm successful" -> "I am doing my best and working hard to improve."

"I'm smart" -> "I am working at learning new things and I'm open to new ideas."

"People love me" -> "I treat people with kindness and respect."

Again ... you know you. Figure out TRUE actions you are willing to take to improve yourself.

Don't stress the end goal. Focus on the fact that, hey, you are working it! Good on you!

FUNDAMENTAL TRUTH OF LIFE

And you know what is a fundamental truth?

The journey is the point in life, not the destination. There are a lot of super-unhappy people who have reached their goals because their goals are destinations.

If you cultivate an honest attitude of "I work at things and I am doing my best" and lean into that when your mind wants to beat you up? Well, my friend, you are on your way.

Make sure to take stock every once in awhile and APPRECIATE that you are, in fact, living that life of "doing my best." And over time, that appreciation plus that motivation will lead to some good vibes about yourself.

I hope this helps some folks out there who, like me, find Affirmations, as they are commonly described, to be hokey as hell and counter-productive.

Sydney Street Files: Natural Progression Part 1

Welcome back my fellow street photographers. I’ve lacked inspiration for this blog the last couple of weeks, which has been a regular occurrence while traveling on my creative journey.

The most important to remember is that your timeline is unique, and no two people will ever experience the same levels of motivation and creativity at the same time.

Your personal life, career path, societal pressures (COVID-19 and lockdowns, for example) can all affect your journey and can have a strong impact on whether you decide to go pro in a creative field or only practice art as a medium for expression.

While this is a photography-based blog, the tips below should apply to all creative fields. My goal in this article is to hopefully offer you some reassurance and remind you that nothing is ever concrete. You never know where life will take you so remember to relax, enjoy everything as it comes, and you will work out the steps to becoming a better artist along the way. A lot of mistakes will be made along the way but if you prioritise your enjoyment, you should see success sooner rather than later.

Get used to failure and re-evaluate your goals

You might find yourself at times envying or becoming jealous of creatives who have made it big, have done something you haven’t, or seem to have figured it all out. What most of these creatives will tell you is that they have made the exact same mistakes you have, that it’s not as easy as it looks and that not everyone will get to their level. Social medias a great place to promote your work and to gain recognition, but it can also breed a lot of negative self-thought on what you have made, what you can make and what your limit is.

The worst thing to do is convince yourself that because you aren’t at the level of someone like Peter McKinnon that you’re unsuccessful. Peter has said in his YouTube videos on multiple occasions how many times he changed career path, failed, altered his goals and did things that were uncomfortable for him to get to that level.

When I first started doing professional work, I hated some of the photos I was producing, but as each project was completed, I found myself getting more comfortable, working out the kinks, and finding out what worked for me and what didn’t work for me… and then there would be another setback. Suddenly, I’d have to learn something new again, I worked out the kinks, and then this cycle continued. This happens A LOT.

After lockdown #2 in Sydney, I decided my best way forward was to drop pro-work for the time being and focus on content I actually wanted to produce (which is how this blog came to be as I fall back into the street photography game). I have adjusted my goals and guess what – I am again failing! I haven’t been consistent with how many articles I write and put out and that annoys me, but I understand that it’s a part of the process. I know I will learn new ways of motivating myself to write and will eventually pick up a regular routine, but it’s about putting in the work, accepting my failures, and re-evaluating my creative goals at each point.

Get used to imposter syndrome – it’s inevitable

Every creator has felt it at some point – that anxiety you get when you post an Instagram photo with every tag possible just to get some exposure or posting something and wondering if it’s going to be well received or not, and then being disappointed when you get 5 likes on a photo you think is good.

Don’t let Instagram or other social media platforms define your idea of success. You need to look at each post as a moment in your own creative timeline because your audience will constantly shift. You never know if or when you will get noticed so take every moment as either a moment of success or as a learning opportunity.

It's also important to remember that marketing your products is a game, which I have approached differently at every level. I have learned a lot through failure, and I no longer see it as a personal attack on myself if my work doesn’t reach an audience. Pick yourself up, dust yourself off and continue with what you’re doing because eventually, you’ll find comfort in the process.

Imposter syndrome pits you against yourself and can often be your downfall. Just know that working out what works for you is an uncomfortable process, but inevitably you will find what works best.

A Note From Staff

It has been a few months since the world has changed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Even today as we approach Summer it still feels very surreal. Every day the situation is changing and it can be overwhelming with the amount of information available, thanks to being interconnected because of the internet. We are still witnessing friends who are struggling during this time as people in their life are directly impacted by COVID-19, artists who continue to be in dire situations with their livelihoods at stake, students whose plans have been entirely disrupted, and how everyone is collectively adjusting in this weird time.

At Pillowfort our team works remotely. We have been routinely keeping in contact with each other during this time as we are spread across the United States. Rest assured, our team is continuing to adhere to the CDC guidelines of social distancing, washing our hands, and self isolating when sick.

Our message is the same as it was three months ago: it is still important now than ever to continue sharing creativity in your own time. Don’t give up sharing the light you have to bring. It is in times like these that the arts, humor, and communication in general are important to bring hope to so many.

Hope reminds us how wonderful humanity can be. Thanks to the internet we have seen beauty from all across the globe. In a way, social media has become quite important lately in helping people feel connected to others even as we are physically separated. We can use our space here to make the world feel a little less lonely than it would otherwise. Just letting someone know you’ve seen them, and sharing your own thoughts with them, means more than ever now.

Our thoughts continue to be with the entire Pillowfort community during this time. You are not alone. Please take breaks away from the news if you have to. Unplug from time to time. Don’t feel guilty for resting. Catch up on shows you have been meaning to watch. Listen to that album you’ve been putting off.  Take a nap. Self care is so important right now.

Hit the article again if you’d like a refresher on vanity, cosmetics, and more. Today, we’ll be focusing on core playlist rewards (strikes, Gambit, and Crucible).

To quote the article, here’s what you can expect on November 10:

We are adding a new set of Armor for the core playlists (strikes, Gambit, and Crucible).

This armor shares a set of new geometry, with decals and shaders specific to the activity.

We will create new sets like this each Year (e.g., Year 4, Year 5, Year 6, etc.)

This set will arrive alongside the next expansion.

This armor can be earned by completing activities or through vendor rank-ups. Weekly challenges are also being updated to offer avenues for players to earn higher-stat packages for these armor sets.

Additionally, Year 4 will see the return of pursuit weapons. For those of you who may have joined our community in the last Season or two, these weapons have static perks, but allow for some customization. The final two perk columns have multiple perks to choose from, so you can tailor your weapon to your desired playstyle. Our eagle-eyed Guardians may recognize this beauty from a recent Stasis trailer….

Our goal is to have a pursuit weapon available per Season, earned through a focused quest. Banshee will give you a choice between Strikes, Crucible, or Gambit to earn the base model. Make sure you take a moment to think about how you want to earn the weapon, as you'll be locked in to specific objectives for whichever activity you pick. 

Once you finish the main quest, Commander Zavala, Lord Shaxx, and the Drifter will offer you an additional quest which will reward you with weapon ornaments to the theme of their respective activities. If you’re omnivorous and enjoy all three offerings, all three will be available to you.

So, now that we've caught your eye with some fancy armor and a new sniper, let's take a quick look at how things are changing for core activities as you launch into your new adventures on November 10. Strike, Gambit, and Crucible playlists are being streamlined.

Nightfall: The Ordeal will continue to feature matchmaking at lower difficulties, and increased rewards for higher difficulty options.

Note: We’re also looking to add Adept weapons to strikes in a future Season. We’ll have updates closer to Season 13 on what to expect.

Gambit

As covered last week, Gambit and Gambit Prime will be consolidated into a single mode. We have some additional details on specific rule changes, as well as development notes from the team on how things are changing, and the goals behind them.

Hi Gambiteers! We wanted to give you an explanations of rules changes coming to Gambit in November, as well as a key update from last week.

First, some goals we wrote down before we started:

Build a more approachable Gambit Prime, keeping the one-round format with a longer round, but without the Gambit Prime armor perks.

Rebalance the motes phase to last 2/3 of each match, rather than half of the match.

Speed up the Primeval fight (compared to Gambit Prime) to give more of the feeling of a ‘boss rush.’

We started with the Gambit Prime encounters, full stop. However, without the Reaper buffs, the Large bosses that come in enemy waves were too tanky – so we pulled them all down to miniboss or elite. The pacing should feel like how Gambit feels for a pickup group, or how Prime feels for a fully kitted team.

We also playtested the “having the motes” phase target a score of 150, and/or have a heavier mote drain, but this allowed organized teams to steamroll even more effectively – not less. So, we pulled back to the current Gambit Prime mote target and drain.

We started with the Gambit Prime Blockers, but pulled the Taken Captain from the Blocker lineup, as he proved a little too potent for a 10-mote Blocker. We replaced him with the Phalanx, who can be tough to kill, but not as lethal. Since we don’t have the armor perks, we also had to remove the 20-mote Giant Blocker.

We kept the invasions during mote phases at three – just like Gambit Prime – but pulled back the minimum time between invasions during mote phases from 10 seconds to 20 seconds. It never feels good to get invaded back-to-back.

For the boss fight, we started with the Gambit Primeval fight, removed the timed Slayer buffs, increased the Primeval health and potency of the slayer buff given by when killing envoys. We respawn the envoys every 40% damage done to the Primeval – so if you get invaded and the Primeval is healed a lot, you have the opportunity to get more Slayer buffs and catch up. The fight length ends up somewhere in between the original Gambit and Gambit Prime, so we adjusted the invasion timer during the Primeval phase to match – right in between Gambit and Gambit Prime timing.

So, overall this mode will be a little quicker than Gambit Prime – mostly due to shortening of the boss phase and the removal of the larger bosses from the fronts, but one that still gives that great Gambit feeling that you all love.

Economy, Eververse, Sandbox, and more. We’re looking forward to talking about things like solo queue Iron Banner, but we have a few things left to tie up as we approach launch.
