ok this is a rant post and I don't have a following, but what is Tumblr if not a place to scream into the void and see if it screams back?

I feel like we need to talk more about the deviation of wild fires, and the affect they have on communities as well as mental health.

Presently the outskirts of my town, and the park around is currently either on fire, or on a evacuation warning. The fire has reached almost 50,000 acres. If you were to talk to anyone at the present moment it would be about the fire, the first words our of your mouth. I have been hearing planes and helicopters over my house every four minutes since 10 PM last night, and could not sleep until 2 am because I was keeping an eye on our fire maps and if our zone would get and evacuation order. I have seen burt houses on Facebook and know that, even if it were to get put out in the hour, the environmental and community deviation alone would be felt for some time.

This, mind you, is not the first experience major with wildfires. Years ago, a neighboring city had a major wildfire as well, that was absolutely devastational. Thousands lost their homes, an entire town was wrecked, and our town's population went up by thousands. The community here pulled together, we took care of our own, and we rebuilt... It is only now that we finally are beginning to feel some reprieve from the situation.

Despite my younger age at this time, it was with no doubt not my first experience with wildfire. When I was about eight, my childhood neighborhood completely burnt down, the line of houses directly behind mine were in ashes. Our line was where it had been lucky enough to been saved. At that point we were lucky enough to have moved out and use that town is a summer place, to see family and friends. We evacuated family, we helped the shelters and resources, and then we went home.

last semester in class, it was a normal fall day, so of course it was a bit hazy with smoke. I was in math class when the entire room pretty much, froze. The students, the teacher, me. Because we all smelled smoke, not house fire smoke, but wildfire smoke. No one was able to continue the lesson until we got the smell out because we all know how much it freaks us out. How feels to have your entire under a cloud of black smoke that feels like an apocalypse coming on to you to have the sun blocked out by 12:00 in the afternoon.

I don't know how we fix this, how we stop the deviation, but this can not continue.

remember how the american and british press stirred up an absolute panic about the non-violent, pro-palestine campus protests? how they endlessly slandered the students as antisemitic extremists, creating justification for the violent police crackdown that would soon follow?

compare that now to how they're covering (or not covering) the fascist pogroms in the UK, where, for the past few days, violent white supremacists mobs have been terrorizing muslims, migrants and other non-white communities, forming mobs to intimidate and violently attack anyone they perceive as non-white and non-British.

the hotel shown in the video above is now the second hotel housing asylum seekers that these fascist mobs have attempted to set fire to, and yet, the harshest words the majority of the UK press is willing to use to describe them, are "far-right rioters, "anti-immigration protesters" or, if you're the BBC, just "protesters."

again, if you compare that to the headlines they were running during the campus protests...

this goes beyond some racist "bias" in their reporting: you can draw a direct link here between the UK media's coverage of palestine, and the fascist mobs willing to burn asylum seekers alive.

obviously there are other factors at play, but the genocide denial, the portrayal of arabs and muslims as terrorists and antisemites (which again, gets projected onto britain's migrant population and asylum seekers as a whole), the overall dehumanization and othering of the palestinian people — all of this has been feeding into, and stoking up, the racism and islamophobia that's now boiling over, and erupting into nakedly fascist violence.
