I just love how genuinely displeased Laois is at how lame those familiars look.

BAD NEWS | CHAPTER INDEX/PROLOGUE (Part 1-64)
-just when you thought you were over your humongous crush on your older brotherâs best friend, geto suguru, you couldnât be more dead wrong, and maybe there isnât really anything holding you back from acting on it now that youâre all grown upâŚexcept satoru doesnât like suguru for you because he knows his kind all too well: a huge ass playboy who breaks hearts like he changes socks. but you think. MAYBE youâll be the exception...maybe not.
CHARACTERS: drummer!geto suguru x (fem/afab) reader x guitarist!sukuna | gojo satoru | itadori yuuji | kugisaki nobara | fushiguro megumi | sukuna | fushiguro toji | nanami kento | choso | tsukumo yuuki | shoko ieiri | utahime iori
GENRE: full-length smau + prose | band au, tats, piercings, the whole shebang | college au | stupid pining | aged-up characters | friends to lovers (?) | this is gonna have smutty stuff because why not?
TW/CW: strong/mature language | adult content so mdni on some parts; just skip them. youâre not missing much | mentions of alcohol, drugs | mentions of cheating, promiscuity, mild dubcon (consent >>>), etc. | again, god-awful pet names iâd cringe at if a 3d person says it | toxic behavior | will add more if something arises
AKIâS NOTES: I would like to express my sincerest thanks to everyone who loved and supported âThawing Ice Queenâ as well as those who participated in the poll on which smau Iâm going to write next. So, this is what won in said poll, and I hope it gets as much as love as TIQ if not more. Reblogs and likes are very much appreciated, and I actively respond to comments as well as Asks. Also, if youâre interested, I will include you in the tag list. Just message me through whatever avenue youâre most comfortable with. Happy reading!
ADDITIONAL NOTES: i will be using pics and other media which would fit situations and make the smau-ness of this piece a little more realistic and entertaining when i believe itâs appropriate/fitting to the plot (as i've done with TIQ). having said that, with regard to inclusivity, i just want to put it out there that they will not necessarily be aimed as the exact descriptions to fit a supposedly generic reader nor will they be representative of a specific race or color (even if youâre/the reader is gojoâs sister here). itâs all for the simple fact of media availability, for funsies and the fact that i donât exclusively write in consideration of those aspects when using reader-insert characters unless i specify it. thank you for understanding.

Let the Light In |8|
Tara Carpenter x Fem!Reader
Chapter Eight: Old Temptations
Summary: After hiding yourself away for weeks, Anika and Henry get you to return to the living. While you're at the party they bring you to, you run into Tara before a third-party runs into your fists.
Warning(s): Swearing, fighting - whoop whoop!! that's the sound, social interactions, and drinking (underage)
Notes: I made at least ten drafts, combined them, adjusted, and here is the final product. This is more of an R focused chapter, so you'll start to see more of the internal struggles she goes through along with a special guest start. As always, I hope you enjoy
Masterlist|Previous Part|Next Part
The incandescent lights of Henry's apartment building buzz overhead as you follow him and Anika up the concrete stairs. Your boots echo against each step, creating a hollow rhythm that matches your reluctant heartbeat. You've been dreading this party all week, but your friends had worn you down with their relentless enthusiasm and pointed comments about your "hermit tendencies."
"I still can't believe you actually agreed to come," Henry says over his shoulder, his keys jingling as he searches for the right one. "Usually getting you out after exams is like trying to coax a cat into taking a bath."
"Maybe I'm turning over a new leaf," you mutter, knowing full well it's a lie. The only reason you'd agreed was because they'd caught you in a moment of weaknessâspecifically, when you were coming down from a three-day study binge and your defenses were too low to properly deflect their persistent pestering.
Anika snorts, adjusting her glittering top that catches the harsh hallway light. "Right. And I'm going to start watching silent films with you."
"Charlie Chaplinâs a classic," you defend, following them into Henry's apartment. The familiar scent of his signature sandalwood candles hits you immediately.Â
"Whatever you say, grandma," Henry teases, disappearing into his bedroom. You can hear him rummaging around, probably looking for whatever he plans to wear tonight.
You collapse onto his worn leather couch, the same one he'd rescued from a curb three years ago. Despite its questionable origins, it's the most comfortable piece of furniture you've ever encountered. Maybe if you sink deep enough into it, they'll forget you're here and leave without you.
Anika perches on the arm of the couch, already touching up her makeup in a compact mirror. "You know," she starts, and you recognize that toneâit's the one she uses when she's about to say something she thinks you won't like. "Tara might be there tonight."
Your stomach does an uncomfortable flip. "And why would I care about that?"
"Oh, I don't know," Anika draws out the words, applying another coat of mascara with practiced precision. "Maybe because you've been moping around ever since your little disappearing act?"
"I haven't been moping," you protest, but even you can hear how weak it sounds. "I've been studying. There's a difference."
"Right," she says, sarcasm dripping from her voice.
You open your mouth to argue, then close it again. The past few weeks have been a blur of textbooks, coffee, and a blend of mathematical formulas and historical documentations. You'd thrown yourself into exam preparation with perhaps more vigor than strictly necessary, but that was just your way of dealing with stress.Â
It definitely had nothing to do with how you'd ignored her texts afterward.
Dork (3:47 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) I can't make it tonight
Tara (3:48 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) oh. lemme knw when u can rescheduleÂ
Dork (3:48 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) Tara, don't do that
Tara (3:49 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) dont wat????
Dork (3:49 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) I know what 'oh' means
Tara (3:50 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) well then eblighten me cuz idk what ur ymmaring abt
Dork (3:51 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) *Enlighten/*yammering, and never mind
Tara (3:51 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) đ¤ is u frÂ
Dork (3:52 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) Excuse me?Â
Tara (3: 52 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) i have to explain??? but i thougt u were all knowing!
Dork (3:53 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) *Thought. I know you know how to spell, you're just reckless with a keyboard
Tara (3:53 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) my question is when did i ask
Dork (3:54 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) That's an improvement
Tara (3:54 pm - 2 WEEKS AGO) stfup.
Henry emerges from his bedroom, now wearing a fitted crop-top that every guy wore in the 80âs. "Are we talking about the Tara situation?"
"There is no 'Tara situation,'" you insist, making air quotes with your fingers. "Can we please just go to this party so I can suffer through it and get back to my peaceful, drama-free existence?"
"Drama-free?" Henry laughs, grabbing his keys. "Is that what we're calling your one-person production of 'Hamlet' these last eighteen years?"
You bite your thumb at him, but there's no real heat behind it. These are your best friends, after all, and you know their teasing comes from a place of love. Even if they're being particularly annoying about it tonight.
The drive to the party is a blur of street lights and the sound of Abbey Road. You're behind the wheel of your beloved '70 Ford Maverick, a car that Henry constantly ridicules. Anika claims the passenger seat, still fussing with her makeup, while Henry sprawls in the back, giving you directions that are more confusing than helpful.
"No, no, turn left at the nextâwait, I meant right. My other left."
"Your other left?" you deadpan, making the turn anyway. "How many lefts do you have?"
"Don't sass the navigator," he replies primly. "Oh, there it is! The house with all the cars out front."
You pull up to the curb about half a block away, already feeling your anxiety spike at the sight of the crowded frat house. Music pulses from within, so loud you can feel it in your chest even from here. People mill about on the front lawn, red cups in hand, their laughter carrying through the night air.
"Remind me again why I agreed to this?" you ask, killing the engine but making no move to get out of the car.
Anika turns to you, her expression softening slightly. "Because Henry threatened to sing the entire soundtrack of 'Cats' outside your bedroom door if you didn't come."
"That was a low blow," you mutter, finally unbuckling your seatbelt. "You know how much I hate that musical."
"Desperate times," Henry says cheerfully, already out of the car and bouncing on his heels with excitement. "Come on, let's go find out what kinds of terrible decisions we can make tonight!"
You follow your friends up the walkway, trying to ignore the way your palms are already sweating. The last party you'd attended had been... well, it had been a week before your self-imposed exile. The night Tara had looked at you with those impossibly dark eyes and asked if you wanted to get some air, and you'd panicked and made up an excuse about needing to check on your nonexistent fish.
The front door is already open, music and voices spilling out into the night. As soon as you cross the threshold, you're hit with a wall of sensory input that makes your head spin. The air is thick with artificial fog from a machine hidden somewhere in the corner, mixed with the distinctive scent of cheap beer and various perfumes and colognes. Multi-colored lights pulse in time with the music, turning everything into a strobing dreamscape and your nightmare.
Henry guides you through the crowd with a gentle hand on your back, navigating the sea of bodies with practiced ease. You catch glimpses of familiar faces as you pass. They all blur together in the dim light, becoming a kaleidoscope of features that makes your head swim.
You end up at yet another worn leather couch that's seen better days, probably around the same era as your car. Henry gestures for you to sit, and you do, grateful for something solid beneath you. The cushions seem to want to swallow you whole, and for once, you don't fight it.
"I'll get us drinks!" Henry shouts over the music, already backing away into the crowd. "Don't move!"
Anika lingers for a moment, looking torn between staying with you and pursuing whateverâor whoeverâhas caught her attention across the room. You wave her off with a weak smile. "Go. I'll be fine right here, becoming one with the furniture."
She hesitates another second before grinning. "Try to have some fun, okay? And text me if you need an escape plan." Then she's gone, disappearing into the crowd with the grace of Mindy, someone who actually enjoys these sorts of gatherings.
Left alone, you let yourself sink deeper into the couch, watching the party unfold around you. A group of girls near the makeshift dance floor are attempting some sort of choreographed routine, though the alcohol in their systems is making it more comedic than coordinated. Two guys are engaged in what appears to be an intense debate about pizza toppings, their gestures becoming more animated with each passing second.
The bass line of whatever song is playing thrums through your body, making your bones vibrate in a way that's not entirely unpleasant. You find yourself timing your breathing to it, using it as an anchor in the chaos. This isn't so bad, you think. You can handle this. It's just a few hours, and then you can go home and binge-watch your comfort shows until the sun comes up.
"Y/L/N special!" Henry's voice breaks through your thoughts as he returns, thrusting a red solo cup into your hands. The liquid inside is an alarming shade of orange that definitely doesn't occur in nature.
You eye it suspiciously. "What exactly makes it a âY/L/N special'?"
"The fact that it's specifically designed for the same people who despise candy unless it's 99% cacao," he explains, dropping onto the couch beside you with his own drinkâsomething amber-colored that you assume is actually beer.
"That's... oddly thoughtful," you admit, taking a tentative sip. It tastes like water thatâs had lemons and limes soak in it for months, the kick makes your tongue tingle. "And dangerous."
"Just pace yourself," he advises, watching as more people filter into the already crowded space. "Oh hey, isn't that Charlotte?"
You follow his gaze to see Charlotte, the person you ended things with through a text message. You try to hide behind the red plastic in your hand as you sip, but you nearly spill your bitter bread water all over yourself when she notices you. You can tell it caught her off guard; her eyes slightly widened and she took an uncomfortably long pause mid-sentence. This pause caused her friends to look over which only made things even more awkwardâat least for you. After shooting daggers at you and one of them flipping you off, they linked elbows with Charlotte and took her to a different room.
You know you deserved it.
Henry sucked his teeth. âOuch. Casanova strikes again,â he chuckled with amusement.
âUgh,â you express in response to the name for you before downing the last of the liquid in your cup. âIâm out. Iâm gonna get one more.â
One drink turns into two, two turns into three, and somewhere during your debate with Henry over which Ninja Turtleâs the best one, youâre interrupted by a pair of familiar dark brown eyes meeting yours. Your attention always seemed to gravitate towards Tara Carpenter.Â
You momentarily pause your expression of admiration for Leonardo, peeking over Henryâs shoulder to give Tara a downwards smile paired with a finger wave. She rolls her eyes and returns your finger wave in a mocking gesture. After Henry realizes whatâs grabbed your attention, he makes an excuse to walk away.
You're nursing your fifth orange drink when she materializes beside you, seemingly out of thin air. "Seriously?" The word drips with exasperation. "You're actually hiding behind Henry?"
"I'm not hiding," you protest, pulling yourself up to what you hope is a dignified height. "I'm strategically positioning myself for optimal social avoidance."
Tara snortsâan inelegant sound that somehow makes her more endearing. "Is that what we're calling it?"Â
The space between you crackles with a tension that's part irritation, part something else entirely.Â
"I could ask you the same thing," you counter with a crack in your voice. Tara notices this and slightly raises an eyebrow while giving you a once-over. "Pretty sure you've been standing in the exact same spot for the last twenty minutes."
Her eyes narrow. "I'm observing."
"Stalking," you correct automatically.
"Strategically positioning myself," she throws your earlier words back at you, and there's a glint in her eye that makes your breath catch.
For a moment, you felt uncharacteristically at ease in such a settingâwhen you catch a fragment of a conversation that makes your blood run cold.Â
ââCarpenter's got a mouth on her that couldâ"
The words slice through your alcohol-induced haze like a knife. Your head whips around so fast you almost give yourself whiplash, searching for the source of the comment. Two guys are leaning against the wall near the stairs, one of them making crude gestures as he continues to make vile comments about Tara.
The pleasant warmth in your system transforms instantly into liquid fire. You recognize one of themâMarcus Wheeler from your Calculus class, the one who always makes inappropriate comments during lectures and thinks he's God's gift to mathematics. The other is unfamiliar, but the way he's laughing and encouraging Marcus makes your skin crawl.
Your muscles tense. Tara notices immediately. "Don't," she warns, a single word packed with more meaning than should be possible.
But you're already moving, your body acting before your brain can fully process the decision.Â
Your fist connects with his jaw before you even realize you've thrown the punch. There's a satisfying crack that you feel more than hear, followed by a burst of pain across your knuckles that you're too angry to properly register. The pain sends a rush through you, pushes you, tempts you for more.Â
Marcus staggers back, both surprised and hurt, but recovers quickly. He lunges for you, but your muscle memory kicks in. You sidestep, using his momentum against him, and somehow you end up on top of him, getting in another solid hit before strong hands pull you away.
The world comes rushing back all at once. The music has stopped, replaced by the murmur of shocked voices and the ringing in your ears. Everyone is staring at you, their faces a blur of surprise and judgment. Marcus is on the ground, blood trickling from his split lip, and presumably broken nose, looking at you with a mixture of rage, disbelief, and fear.
Your chest feels too tight, like someone's wrapped steel bands around your ribcage and is slowly tightening them. The weight of what you've just done crashes over you like a wave, threatening to pull you under. You need to get outânow.
You shoulder your way through the crowd, ignoring Henry calling your name, ignoring the whispers that follow in your wake. Someone tries to grab your arm, but you shake them off, focused solely on reaching the door. The cool night air hits your face like a slap when you finally burst outside, but you keep walking, your hands shaking as the adrenaline starts to wear off.
The crisp winter air hits you like a slap when you stumble outside, your breath forming small clouds in the freezing night.
âWait!â
When did she get here?
"Let me see," Tara's voice cuts through your alcohol-induced haze, her hand reaching for yours with a familiarity that makes your head spinâor maybe you've had one too many of those orange drinks.
You thrust your hand toward her dramatically, wincing as the movement sends a spike of pain through your bruised knuckles.
"I totally got that incel good," you slur, a giggle bubbling up from somewhere deep and slightly unhinged. The ice beneath your feet seems to shimmer with your triumph.
Tara's fingers hover just above your hand, not quite touching but close enough that you can feel the heat radiating from her skin. "You're going to need ice for that," she says, her tone caught between exasperation and something elseâsomething softer.
"Ice, huh?" You look down at the ground, the irony not lost on you.Â
With exaggerated precision, you bend down and scoop up a handful of snow, pressing it against your knuckles. The cold bites, but it's a welcome contrast to the burning anger and alcohol still coursing through your system.
"This works, right?" You look up at her, your eyes wide and slightly unfocused. The world tilts slightly, but Tara remains steadyâan anchor in your spinning vision.
Something flickers in her eyesâamusement, maybe. "You're something else," she mutters, but there's no real bite to the words.
Emboldened by alcohol and adrenaline, you lean in closer. The words tumble out before you can stop them. "So⌠I never did get an answer to that proposal."
Tara goes very still. A smile begins to form, tentative and fragile as first light.Â
She chuckles at your remark before shaking her head and scoffing to herself. "Sometimes I just don't get you," she says with a smile still etched on her face, but there's more complexity in those words than simple dismissal as she stares back into your eyes.
Confusion must show on your face because she looks away, the streetlight catching the curve of her cheek, the set of her jaw. You didnât know what else to say so you just said the first thing that came to mind.Â
âMerry birthday, Tar,â you said.Â
Sheâs taken aback by this. She didnât know what to say, yet still opened her mouth to respond. Maybe something would come to her, but before anything didâ
"There you are!" Anika's voice cuts through the moment like a knife. Your car pulls up to the curb, engine running warm against the freezing air. "We need to get out of here before that guy calls the cops."
The moment dissolves. Tara takes a step back, creating distance that feels more emotional than physical. You're left standing there, snow melting between your fingers, the taste of unresolved everything burning at the back of your throat.
As you climb into the passenger seat, you catch one last glimpse of her in the side mirrorâa silhouette, perfectly still and impossibly distant.
â
The drive home is mostly silent, broken only by the occasional sigh from Anika and the gentle humming of your car's engine. Your knuckles throb in time with your heartbeat, a steady reminder of your momentary loss of control. The adrenaline is wearing off now, replaced by a mixture of embarrassment and alcohol-induced wooziness that makes you slouch lower in your seat.
"You know," Anika finally says as she pulls into your shared apartment complex, "when I said you needed to be more social, starting another fight wasn't exactly what I had in mind."
You grunt in response, too busy focusing on the way the world is tilting slightly to form actual words. The drinks are hitting harder now that the excitement is over, making everything feel soft around the edges.
"Use your words," she chides, killing the engine.Â
"Words are for people who don't punch assholes at parties," you mumble, fumbling with your seatbelt. The simple mechanism seems impossibly complex right now.
Anika reaches over to help you, her movements gentle despite her exasperated tone. "Come on, Rocky Balboa. Let's get you inside."
Getting up the stairs to your second-floor apartment proves to be an adventure. You insist you can do it yourself, but after the third time you miss a step, Anika wraps an arm around your waist and practically drags you up.
"I can walk," you protest, even as you lean heavily against her.
"Sure you can. Just like you can make rational decisions at parties, right?"Â
You attempt to glare at her, but the effect is somewhat ruined when you stumble over your own feet. "He deserved it."
"Oh, I'm not arguing that point," Anika says, fishing her keys out of her purse while still supporting most of your weight. "Marcus Wheeler is definitely in the running for Biggest Douchebag of the Year. But maybe next time we could handle it without violence? You know, like adults?"
"Adulting is overrated," you declare as she manages to get the door open. "If I was a kid, I could just pull Tara's pigtails or something."
Anika steers you toward the kitchen, depositing you none too gently into one of the mismatched chairs around your small table. "Okay, first of all, that's not the approach to crushing on someone that you think it is. Second, stay put while I get the first aid kit."
You slump forward, resting your forehead against the cool surface of the table. "Not crushing," you mumble into the wood. "Just... emotionally compromised."
"Right," Anika calls from the bathroom, where you can hear her rummaging through cabinets. "And I'm just 'casually interested' in my hot girlfriend."
"That's different," you argue, lifting your head slightly. "You two are together. Youâre attached to the hipâyou donât hide from each other."
"Ha! So you admit you were hiding!"
You let your head thunk back down onto the table. "I admit nothing. I was studying. Very intensely. In locations where certain people were statistically unlikely to appear."
Anika returns with the first aid kit and a bag of frozen peas, setting both on the table. "Sit up, you disaster. Let me see your hand."
You comply with a dramatic sigh, straightening in your chair and holding out your injured hand. Your knuckles are already starting to bruise, spots of purple blooming across the skin. There are a few small cuts, probably from where you caught Marcus's teeth.
"This might sting," Anika warns before dabbing at the cuts with an alcohol wipe. You hiss through your teeth but don't pull away. "So," she continues, her tone deceptively casual, "want to talk about what really happened back there?"
"Not particularly," you mutter, watching as she carefully cleans each cut. "Can we just chalk it up to temporary insanity and move on?"
"You punched a guy for talking shit about Tara." She applies antibiotic ointment with practiced efficiency. "That's not temporary insanity. That's feelings."
You try to pull your hand away, but she holds firm. "It's notâ I justâ He was being gross!"
"Mhmm." She wraps your knuckles in gauze with precise movements. "And the fact that it was about Tara specifically had nothing to do with your reaction?"
"I would have done the same for anyone," you insist, even though you both know it's a lie. "It's about basic human decency."
"Right. Basic human decency. That's why you've been moping around our apartment for two weeks, taking different routes, and muttering under your breath when you think I can't hear you."
Before you can form a suitably indignant response, your phone buzzes. Henry's face appears on the screen, caught mid-laugh at some long-ago hangout.
You put the call on speaker, feeling too exhausted to hold the phone. Henry's excited voice crackles through, bursting with energy.
"Holy shit! Are you okay? That was the most badass thing I've ever seen in my life!"
"I'm fine," you mutter, wincing as Anika presses a bag of frozen peas against your bruised knuckles. "Ow! Except for my so-called best friend trying to give me frostbite."
Anika's tone is no-nonsense. "Keep the ice on, or your hand will swell up like a balloon."
Henry can barely contain his excitement. "You should have seen Marcus's face after you left. He was completely shaken. I don't think anyone's ever stood up to him like that before."
You groan, tilting your head back. "Great. Now I'll be known as the crazy chick who starts fights at parties. That'll look amazing on my resume."
"Are you kidding? You're going to be a legend!" Henry starts, then suddenly there's a scuffle in the background.
"Am I on speaker?" you ask, suspicion rising in your voice.
"No!" Henry says simultaneously with another voice declaring, "Yes!"
You recognize the second voice immediately. "Henry James Martinez," you say, using his full nameâknowing how much he hates itâ"Are you and Tony back together?"
"No!" Henry protests. "His place flooded, and he needed a place to stay!"
"Sure thing, Hef," you chuckle, catching Anika's amused smile.
Tony's cheerful voice joins the conversation. "Hey, heard you knocked some douche on his ass for talking shit about your girlfriend. Nicely done."
"She's not my girlfriend," you respond quickly.
Henry can't resist. "Define girlfriend."
You're ready with a comeback. "Define sharing a living space withâ"
"Uh oh, bad connection," Henry interrupts, and suddenly the line goes dead. Anika bursts into laughter.
âIâm gonna get you some aspirin,â Anika offered, patting your shoulder as she passed. âBut just so you know that whole âemotionally compromisedâ thing? Yeah, thatâs basically the definition of crushing.â
You make an incoherent noise of protest into the table.Â
"Oh, and by the way," Anika calls from the kitchen, "you're totally teaching me that right hook tomorrow. After your hangover wears off, of course."
You lift your head just enough to deadpan at her.Â
"Love you too, champ. Now take your aspirin and go to bed before you fall asleep on the table. Again."
Not long after she went to her room, you stumble into the bathroom, hand throbbing and head spinningâthe former a reminder of the nightâs events. The light is harsh against your alcohol-fogged brain. The tile floor is cold beneath your bare feet as you stumble to the sink, turning on the water and splashing your face.
When you look up, he's there.
Your Uncle's bloody corpse stands behind you in the reflection, that familiar crooked smile that's always been more predatory than comforting. His appearance is exactly as you remember from old photographsâthat slightly manic glint in his eye, the way he holds himself like violence is always just beneath the surface.
"Killer punch," he says, leaning against the bathroom wall. No greeting, no preamble. Just direct observation.
You don't jump but roll your eyes. "Go away," you mutter, gripping the sink's edge.
He chucklesâa sound that's more bark than laugh. "I saw myself in you tonight. That rage? That precise moment of calculated violence? Pure genetics that chose you."
"I'm nothing like you," you snap, turning to face him directly. The bathroom suddenly feels smaller.
He takes a step closer. "Oh, but you are. That moment when you heard those guys talking about your girl? That split second before the punch? That wasn't just anger. That was hunting instinct."
You close your eyes, trying to block him out. "I'm not a killer. I'm not you."
"Not yet," he says, and there's something almost proud in his voice. "But you've got the potential. I saw how you moved. How you calculated. How you knew exactly where to hit to cause maximum impact."
"My dadâs a professional pig," you counter. "Itâs not like I attended murder school."
His laugh is sharp, brittle. "Call it what you want. But we both know there's something inside you. Something sharp. Something waiting."
The argument feels familiarâlike every nightmare, every family gathering where his memory haunted the edges of conversation, their fear of the parallels you both held. You're tired of it. Tired of him.
"I'm going to bed," you declare, pushing past his spectral form.
He doesn't disappear immediately. Instead, his voice follows you. "We're not so different, you and me."
You pause at the doorway, not turning around, as your hand tightly grips the edges of the doorframe. "We're nothing alike."Â
The silence that follows is answer enough.
As you crawl back into bed, the room feels normal againâjust another night, just another internal argument with a ghost who refuses to stay buried.
But somewhere in the darkness, you can still feel him watching. Waiting.

Years later your family moves to England and you get accepted at Hogwarts where you finally meet Sirius once again, along with all of his friends. A/N: Most Poly!Marauders fics are oneshots, where the relationship between characters is already established, and they're all happy and pleased with it. No issues, no drama, but I WANTED the drama. Couldn't find it, so I set myself up to write the story behind the stablished relationship. I wanted to know how they started dating each other, the jealousy, the will they won't they, because getting into a poly relationship can't be an easy task, and I wanted to explore that story. If you're interested: Welcome to Gilded Constellations!

Just Us - Series List
Y/n is a multimillionaire. Wanda Maximoff is a divorced mum of two twin boys who is trying her best. What happens when their paths cross at a club and Y/n takes Wanda home for the night?
Warnings: This story is an 18+ read, Minors DNI, contains talks and description of Death, Accidents, Injury, Child Loss, Abuse (Physical and Emotional), Anxiety, Panic Attacks, Suggestive themes, Smut (Each Chapter With Themes Explained), Angst (Lots of It), And Some Fluff Thrown in because I felt bad. Top Reader, Bottom Wanda
Each chapter will come with their own warnings.
This is a story that I have put up on my Wattpad and my Ao3 and thought I would share it here for more of you wonderful people. I do hope you enjoy this read. There will be mistakes here and there and maybe some incorrect translations.
So this is an AU story with the MCU characters. So the ages and story lines with be changed and different from that in the movies.Â
I will right some history for each character as the story progresses just so ages and other things make sense.Â
All the Character's in this are played by their respective actors and certain aspects of the MCU have been added in. But once again its not going to be an alternative marvel story it is a completely different universe.Â
I don't own any if the MCU characters.

our beloved summer | jjk (07)
You made a vow to hate Jeon Jungkook ever since he packed up and left you without a single explanation, but when he shows up at your door after years of radio silence, it turns out that maybe your resolve isnât as strong as you thought.

Somewhere in the multiverse There's a me and you that works We never fuck it up We're out there still in love Somewhere in the multiverse Maybe that's enough
multiverse - Maya Manuele ft. PEMRBOKE
Sometimes, whenever you look up at the moon at night, you wonder if Jungkook is doing the same thing.
Even when you fall out of love with someone, it still hurts. It hurts because you once loved them so much it felt like the sky would collapse if you couldnât be with them. It hurts because the love wasnât taken from you, but rather it started slipping away on its own, more and more each day until you realize youâre holding onto nothing when there once was everything.
You canât say that youâre too familiar with that kind of hurt though. Youâve never fallen out of love before.
You donât think Jungkook is too familiar with it either, at least not when he left you.
You wonder if he thinks about you from time to time and gets sad. You think he does, because you know that he loved you. Something ended for him too. The memories that you shared were his memories too.
You hope that itâs painful for him whenever thoughts of you cross his mind, because that would mean that he cares. That a part of him still cares.
And if he still cares, then he might come back.
Despite the front that you try to parade around, there is a part of you that will always leave your heart vacant for him, regardless of whether or not he would return. Itâs a scary thought, one that you would rather avoid at all costs, one that says there will be no one that you love more than you loved Jungkook. Maybe there canât be another person that you will love at all.
You can come back quietly, like the wind slipping through the crack I leave in the window at night; or you can announce your return resoundingly like a sudden downpour quenching the summer heat. I donât care. I kept your side of the bed empty and warm, waiting for you to come back. Hoping that you would come home.
[08:47] Yoongi: sure you donât want me to drive you there? [08:48] Yoongi: i can pick you up in 30 [08:52] You: positive 𤧠i told you i already booked the train. itâs only 4 hours away [08:53] You: iâll survive, yoongs [08:55] Yoongi: did you not watch Train To Busan? [08:56] You: ? [08:57] Yoongi: what if thereâs a zombie apocalypse [09:00] You: yoongi if thereâs a zombie apocalypse, how is your CONVERTIBLE supposed to keep me safe [09:01] Yoongi: iâll put the roof up [09:02] You: stop talking [09:02] You: please stop talking. [09:03] Yoongi: đĄđĄđĄ [09:03] You: đ [09:03] You: gotta get dressed now though. iâll see u when i get back? :) [09:05] Yoongi: fine [09:06] Yoongi: safe travels. text me when you get there :)
You plop onto your bed with a sigh, glancing at the bag thatâs already packed and sitting near your wardrobe, lonely. You stay like that for a while, contemplating whether or not you should bail at the very last minute.
It was not on your bingo card that youâd be here, agonizing over your ex-boyfriendâs brotherâs wedding. Nope. Absolutely no one saw it coming.
For fuckâs sake, why would they invite you to a wedding? A celebration of love? It feels like youâre being forced onto a prank show, just waiting for someone to jump out and scream in your face.
You learned that the wedding was for close friends and family only, so it would be a relatively small event, which makes it even more confusing why you were also asked to join. Maybe the world is changing too rapidly and youâre just a little old-fashioned for it, but you really donât understand why your ex-boyfriendâs family would want you there.
Taehyung and Jimin were invited too; theyâre Jungkookâs best friends after all. Theyâre practically an extension of the family, Jungkookâs brothers by choice. But Taehyung doesnât come back from his work trip until the day of the wedding, and Jimin⌠Well, he just doesnât want to go to a Busan wedding in the middle of winter.
So why are you even going?
You couldâve declined. Said you couldnât attend because the invitation came in so late. Made up a work trip or a family emergency. Thereâs a plethora of excuses you couldâve used.
Or you couldâve simply said no. That wouldâve been perfectly fine too. No one would even need to ask why.
But maybe it was because his mother had customized the invite with her own handwriting in the back. You wouldâve missed it if you hadnât spent hours meticulously studying the card like someone was going to quiz you. It wasnât anything special - just We hope to see you there - but you think youâd feel really bad to decline after sheâd made the extra effort to ask you to come.
When you told Yoongi that you would be attending Jungkookâs brotherâs wedding, he didnât seem upset. Still cool as a cucumber. Although if he was bothered by the announcement, you donât think he wouldâve let it show. It did take him a minute to take it in, but then he just pecked your cheek and asked if you could bring a plus-one. You both knew that you wouldnât even if that was an option.
Pushing your body off the bed, you drag yourself to the bathroom to splash some water on your face. Then sunscreen. Then change into the clothes youâd already picked out last night. Your train doesnât leave for another hour and fifteen minutes, but you want to be there at least twenty minutes early just in case. This is one of your only good habits.
You rub your eyes when you finally haul yourself outside, thinking you must still be dreaming because what is Jungkookâs car doing here?
You blink a few times, expecting the vehicle to disappear in a puff of white smoke.
Spoiler alert: It doesnât.
The car is in front of you, but the man is nowhere to be found.
You stand there dumbfoundedly, contemplating whether you should wait it out for a little bit to see if heâs actually here. He comes running up to you a couple minutes later, holding two paper cups in his hands, one of them a chai latte. A memory youâd buried long ago comes rushing to the surface. Itâs too early for you to be feeling.
âHi,â he says, his warm breath coming out in a huff of smoke in the crisp morning air.
âHi?â you mutter dumbly when he trades the bag in your hand for the drink. Thereâs a moment where youâre genuinely baffled, wondering if this is a memory reel playing right before your eyes. This is your Jungkook, wearing that same old smile whenever he used to come bounding up your dorm building so you could walk to the library together, where he would hang out with you during your shift if he didnât have classes. âWhat are you doing here?â
You donât remember telling him what time your train was, so heâd probably badgered it out of Taehyung or Jimin somehow.
âI thought I could drive us there,â he says. âI texted you about it.â
Well, that explains it. You donât bother with his dozens of messages anymore. âOh, uhm, I already booked the train.â
This doesnât seem to faze him at all. âFree cancellation up to 15 minutes before departure.â Jungkook grins, clearly eager despite your obvious reluctance. Itâs too early for this, whatever the hell this is.
When you told him that you had RSVPâd yes to the invitation, he was surprised that you even knew about the wedding. He even seemed nervous that day.
âWhat if Iâd already left?â you ask.
He blinks, then stammers like a confused child. Itâs cute, and you have to mentally slap yourself over the head for even thinking that.
âThen Iâd go after you.â
How? you scoff internally. Unrealistic.
Regardless, not even an hour ago, you were declining Yoongiâs offer to drive you there. Now, youâre standing here, in front of your ex-boyfriend, contemplating whether or not you should go with him.
âLetâs go,â he says after a minute. âWe donât wanna be stuck in traffic.â
âI havenât said yes.â Yet. âItâs a 4-hour drive.â
You donât have to clarify what you mean. He understands it.
You both just stare at each other for a moment, the tension suddenly thickening with every passing second. Four hours on the road. Four hours alone in a car with Jungkook. Thatâs about two hundred minutes more than you think you can handle.
Itâs like he can see right through you. âDonât think about it,â he says, voice dropping lower. âItâs just a weekend. Everything will still be here for you to think about when we get back.â
In your head, it translates to: All of our shit will still be here when we get back. You can keep being mad at me then.
You hope thatâs not true. You hope that when you get back, the things that keep you up at night will simply cease to exist. That in the two days youâll be gone, a genie will materialize and solve all your problems for you.
Either way, itâs probably for the best that you arenât mean to him this weekend. Youâre stuck with him for the next 48 hours or so; itâll only stress you out even more if you channel all of your energy into tormenting him. Besides, youâre already the ex girlfriend who has no place alongside his family. You donât want to be the dark cloud raining on everyoneâs parade too.
Maybe youâd already made up your mind when you let him take the bag from you.
For the first half of the drive, you were unconscious.
Itâs a useless superpower that you have, the ability to fall asleep anywhere - literally anywhere, including in the passenger seat of your ex-boyfriendâs car while he escorts you to his hometown. Melatonin gummies manufacturers hate you.
You couldâve slept the whole drive, but around the second hour mark, you were startled awake when your body jostled forward, straining against your seatbelt uncomfortably. There was an arm trying to hold you back, despite the seatbelt having done its job well.
âFuck,â Jungkook curses before he turns toward you, worry written all over his face. âIâm sorry. Iâm sorry, are you okay?â
You blink, still half asleep. âIâm okay,â you say. The minivan that Jungkook almost rear-ended continues on its merry way, carrying what seems to be a family of five. âWhat happened?â
He sighs, his outstretched arm retreating back to his side. âI got a bit distracted, thatâs all.â
You take in your surroundings then. Thereâs barely any other cars in sight, no tacky billboard that sticks out like a sore thumb to catch your attention. Thereâs just the freeway, stretching on empty for all you can see.
âBy what?â you ask.
âNothing,â he says. âGo back to sleep. Iâll wake you when we get there.â
See, you have the superpower of falling asleep anywhere and everywhere, but once youâve been woken up, itâs not as easy to fall back asleep.
That, and the fact that youâre hungry as shit.
You open your mouth, about to say no, about to offer to drive the rest of the way if Jungkook is tired, but your stomach doesnât let you get a word out. It growls, filling the space of the car, making you want to chuck yourself out the fucking window and run all the way back to the city. This wouldnât have happened had you taken the train, because if you had, there wouldâve been food services and no one would be subject to hearing your stomach sing like itâs chewing out a small puppy in there. Life is nothing but an endless pit of embarrassment and despair.
Your arms hold themselves tighter around your frame, practically squeezing into your abdomen as you will it to please, please, please be quiet. Jungkook stares at you, and you can tell by the teeny tiny quirk of his lips that heâs trying to bite back a smile. Heâs relaxed, but thereâs still something hesitant on his face. It takes him a minute before he finally throws the question out.
âDo you want to go to that guksu place that we used-â that we used to go to, âyou know the place. The one thatâs right off the freeway?â
The sun is out today. The sky unfolds endlessly just outside the window, coloring blue everything your eyes land on. There are strips of clouds scattered here and there, like delicate strokes of white paint on an azure canvas. Even the winter cold has to soften. You bite into your cheek. Donât think, thatâs what he had told you.
Not much about this quaint restaurant has changed. The quirky decorations are still where they used to be, the windows still the same unique stained glass that you never came across anywhere else. You remember the elderly woman who runs the place, even if she doesnât have a single clue who you are. The golden retriever you used to fawn over every time you stopped by, sits quietly by the door and watches the cars pass by, his fur now graying as weariness begins to settle into those old bones.
You wouldâve been displeased if the place had changed, because, well, you donât like change. But then again, this familiarity is dangerous. It tricks you into thinking that everything is still the same, even you and him. Deludes you into believing that youâre still in love and that heâll walk out of here holding your hand.
Regardless, the first spoonful has you biting back a smile.
âHow is it?â Jungkook asks.
It makes you feel all warm inside, and then a little sad, nostalgic.
âTastes just the same,â you tell him simply.
âHmm.â
He lets you satisfy your hunger in peace. Itâs the least he can do anyway.
Thereâs a wall near the back of the restaurant, where people could hang polaroids of themselves and cute handwritten notes. You think if you dig through the hundreds of photos scattered across the space, you might be able to find you and Jungkook there, if you two havenât already been thrown out long ago to make room for new memories.
He pays for your food after youâre both finished, despite some protesting on your side. As you leave, youâre busy thinking that if you could have a moment to marvel at that far-back wall of memories, if you could find a photo of you and him there, you would probably sneak it into your coat pocket.
Itâd be another thing to add to your pile of Jungkook memorabilia - the old clothes in the back of your closet, the stack of dusty polaroids at the bottom of your drawer. You wonder if he keeps anything of yours, maybe an old t-shirt that you forgot to take back. Itâs probably unlikely, but a girl can hope.
You miss the way Jungkook glances back, thinking the exact same thing.
You survive the rest of the drive with more ease, probably because of the food. You spend most of the remaining 2 hours leaning against the window, humming to the radio, closing your eyes but not really sleeping. You even forget to be nervous about what is to come.
That is, until the car pulls up to the venue.
Itâs absolutely gorgeous, and a lot bigger than you imagined - a modern beach house overlooking the waters. Itâs not as extravagant as one would expect to see when they come to a wedding, but considering the small crowd in attendance, this is more than enough. You see people rush in and out of the place even from far away - planners, caterers, the bridesmaids and groomsmen, probably.
You feel a bit comforted just watching this. His family seems to be doing a lot better than before. Itâs nice to know.
You barely make it out of the car before someone calls your name, and pulls you into a hug that knocks the wind out of you. Although, when you catch the scent of her hair, you instantly know who it is.
Parents usually have a scent thatâs distinct to only their kids, a scent so cozy and homely that no perfume can ever mask. You can only describe your momâs scent with a feeling, specifically the feeling of your chest tightening, tingling with a bittersweetness that you never found elsewhere.Â
Strangely enough, Jungkookâs mother has always made you feel the opposite. She makes you feel relieved to be in her embrace, like she accepts you for who you are even if all you are to her, at the end of the day, is a stranger.
You hug her back awkwardly, hesitantly, in front of Jungkookâs dad, his brother Junghyun, and a girl you donât know. You assume that sheâs the bride-to-be, the main character whom this weekend revolves around. Sooji, you remember that was the name on the wedding invitation.
You get choked up suddenly, eyes turning glassy though you quickly blink it away. Youâre not sure if youâve had someone be so happy to see you. Bypassers might even think that you just found the cure for cancer.
For a second there, you wonder if your mere presence has ever made your mother this overjoyed.
You look at Jungkook for help, silently asking him to rescue you. Who else are you supposed to turn to if not him?
He understands that look. âOkay, mom,â he says, entangling her arms from you with ease, âY/Nâs tired from the drive. Letâs let her rest, yeah? Iâll show her the room.â
She ignores her son. âHoney,â she says, brushing your hair away from your face so she could see you better. âThank you for coming.â She used to insist that you call her âmomâ, or at least by her first name because âMrs. Jeonâ was too formal for someone she considered family.
You now have to opt for the latter, because âmomâ isnât an option for you anymore.
âThank you for inviting me, Mrs. Jeon,â you tell her with a smile. Youâre not really sure what else to say, but it makes you a little sad just calling her that.
She opens her mouth before closing it again, seemingly about to jokingly scold you for the formality before she recognizes the bittersweet look in your eyes. She just smiles at you then. Thereâs not much to be done about it.
You donât know if anyone else sees how the moment is weighed down. Probably not. Maybe itâs just you and her who share this sentiment.
Jungkook doesnât wait for his mom anymore. Sons, typical. He wedges himself between the two of you like a bulldozer and leads you inside the house.Â
Even though all you have is an overnight bag, Jungkook carries it for you all the way up to your room, which is only down the hall from his. Then he disappears pretty quickly afterward, saying something about his best man duties and putting out fires. He seems apologetic as he tells you this, but itâs not like youâre expecting him to babysit you all weekend.
You bore yourself to death in your room for a while, before you remember you have to text Yoongi to let him know you got here safely. Though, you stop short of telling him that it was Jungkook who drove you here. Itâs trivial enough, right? You donât want Yoongi to feel bad over nothing. You do, however, inform Taehyung and Jimin when you text them about it, to which Jimin only responds with a preemptively disapproving âDonât do anything I wouldnât do.â
When you get too stir-crazy, you wander outside, hoping to explore the beach before it gets dark and colder. You try to stay out of everyoneâs way, because a good guest is a quiet guest. You seem to be doing a good job. No one notices you, not even Jungkookâs mom but thatâs because sheâs the person you actively want to avoid the most. You donât know what youâd even say to her if she gets you alone.
Everything is hectic, as one can probably imagine when it comes to wedding preparations. You havenât had anyone close to you get married yet, so itâs safe to say that youâre pretty much clueless about all of this. You wonder what itâll be like when your big day comes around, if you even ever get married. You havenât thought about it in a long time. Why would you? You donât really have a reason to think about this. Itâs much easier to picture Taehyungâs or Jiminâs wedding day than your own.
Your opinion on having kids still remains the same, and you were never one of those girls who daydreamed about having a big and extravagant wedding, but itâs not such a bad idea to ponder about. You still think marriage is a scary thing - itâs one of the biggest commitments a person could ever make - but youâre not entirely opposed to getting married.Â
Why are you even mulling over this? Your time might never even come.
When you round the corner to get the steps that would lead you down to the beach, you run into Sooji and a woman holding a thick binder - must be a wedding planner. You give Jungkookâs future sister-in-law an awkward smile in greeting, which she returns much more gracefully before she tells the woman that sheâll be with her in a minute.
So now youâre stuck here, about to make small talk with a person you have never met before, and will likely never see again. Great.Â
âHi,â you say, extending a hand. âI havenât had the chance to introduce myself. Iâm Y/N.â
âIâm Sooji,â she replies warmly as she shakes your hand, and you have to stop yourself from being a little weirdo and thinking about how silky her hair looks up close. âYouâre Jungkookâs⌠friend, right?â
You purse your lips before nodding with a chuckle. The pause tells you that she knows, and you wouldnât be surprised if sheâs uncomfortable having you here.Â
âIâm sorry if this is weird. You probably donât want a complete stranger at your wedding.â
Sooji shakes her head instantly, waving her hands around to dismiss your apology. âPlease, itâs totally fine. Junghyunâs mom talked to me about it before we sent out the invites. I wouldnât have agreed if I was really bothered. Donât worry about it, seriously.â
âWhy did you agree?â you ask, trying to sound as polite as possible. âYou donât know who I am.â
âI guess I was curious.â She shrugs, before laughing lightly as she says, âI used to think you werenât real.â
âHuh?â
âShe talks about you constantly. Never in front of Jungkook, of course. But sheâs really fond of you, and you probably already know that doesnât happen very often. She really does see you like a daughter. She made you sound too good to be true.â
Youâre not sure how to respond to that. His mom still thinks about you, still talks about you after all this time. Youâre just his ex-girlfriend, but she considers you her family. You donât know what to do with this information nor the way it pinches your heart.
âI-â You purse your lips, fumbling with the responses in your head. You settle on a light laugh, because Sooji can probably tell that youâre struggling with the words too. âI have to be honest. I donât know what to say to that.â
âYou donât have to say anything. I just thought you should know that youâre still very much loved here.â She gives you a kind smile, and it looks like she wants to tell you something else but decides against it in the end. Soojiâs eyes land somewhere behind you before she points in that general direction. âI have to go take care of an issue with the flowers, but look, Jungkook is here. Why donât you ask him to show you around?â
And then sheâs already off. Overall, what a⌠strange interaction.
You turn around to see Jungkook standing near one of the entrances to the house. As you watch him talk to someone - a bridesmaid, you assume, or just one of the other guests - you try not to think about the fact that thereâs a stirring sensation in your stomach, and that it only intensifies when she throws her head back in a pretty laugh, a perfectly manicured hand landing on his arm like heâs the most charming person sheâs ever met.Â
You donât give it a name, donât label it green in color even though youâre blue and heâs golden sunshine. You donât acknowledge that itâs a feeling, because doing so would make it real and there are certain truths that youâd rather delude yourself into thinking are lies.
When Jungkookâs eyes catch yours and he cuts off the woman mid-sentence with a curt excuse me, you donât acknowledge that feeling either, but itâs warm and it blooms in your chest as he makes his way to you. Itâs something victorious, something that tickles your ribs.
He comes to you like youâre a destination heâs been waiting all his life to reach, and you certainly, adamantly donât acknowledge the spectacularly dizzying feeling that swallows you whole when he places a gentle hand on your arm, his voice soft as he says, âThere you are. I was looking for you.â
The familiarity, itâs catastrophic.
âI was just walking around,â you tell him. âThereâs not a lot to do here. I was bored.â
âYou have me,â he says. Probably not in that way, but youâd like to think thatâs how he means it. âI donât have any more fires to put out. What do you want to do now?â
You glance over your surroundings, still set on your original plans. You wanted to go alone, but you suppose you can let him accompany you. You check the time on your phone before asking, âCan we go down to the beach? I wanna see if we can catch the sunset.â
You used to do this whenever you came here to visit - walk along the beach, hand in hand, sunlight in your hair and the cool breeze holding you tight in the afterglow.
The keyword here is âused toâ. Now, you have to stuff your hands in your pockets just so you donât reach for him every time you shiver.
Itâs late enough in the afternoon for you to see the moon faintly shine against a blue and orange backdrop. Sun and moon, together in the same frame. It feels symbolic somehow. Youâre not really sure.
âThe moon looks like an egg,â Jungkook observes astutely, taking casual strides next to you. It makes you burst into easy laughter, which makes him laugh with you too. You stop walking when you reach what you think is a good spot to watch the sky.Â
âLetâs sit here for a bit,â you say. Itâs not the greatest idea - sitting idly by would only make you colder - but you just want to stop and look at the sunset. Once youâre seated in the sand, you respond to his moon remark, âThatâs true, yâknow. NASA said so.â
âYeah,â he says, settling down beside you, âyou made me read that.â
Youâd forgotten about it, and you didnât think that heâd remember. Itâs freezing cold and the moon looks like an egg, but youâre not thinking, and you feel safe. Nothing can hurt you here, or at least thatâs what youâd like to tell yourself.
You wrap your arms around yourself to keep from shivering, but you still shiver anyways.
âAre you cold?â he asks.
âA little,â you admit. âI shouldâve worn a thicker sweater. But itâs o-â
He doesnât let you finish the sentence, just smoothly takes off his jacket to put it around your shoulders.
You put your hands atop his to stop him. When you touch him, thereâs an electric tingle that almost makes you flinch. He feels warm, still resembling a human furnace.Â
âNo, you donât have t-â
âTake the jacket, Y/N,â he says. âItâs just a jacket.â
The jacket smells like him. It only makes you want to crawl further into the warmth.
He seems more self-assured here, thatâs what you notice. More like the version of himself that he used to be. Confident, sometimes borderline cocky. Annoying but oddly endearing, you came to love that about him.
His relaxed demeanor is understandable. Youâre merely a visitor here, while this is his homeground.Â
âIâm curious about something,â he says after a while.
âOkay.â
âWhatâs the deal with Wednesdays?â he asks.Â
âYou know how they say bad things come in threes?â You purse your lips, thinking it over, feeling something bitter in your mouth as you recall the events that led to this. âMy parents got divorced on a Wednesday. I moved out of momâs house on a Wednesday. AndâŚâ You hold your knees close to your chest as you hesitate to utter this last part, âwe broke up on a Wednesday.â
You see the exact moment Jungkook mentally slaps himself, paling a couple shades as he tongues his cheek, not expecting his question to inadvertently lead back to this. It wasnât your intention to guilt trip him. It was true that he dumped you on a Wednesday, but you donât want the mood to turn sour, to have to mull over this again. Like he said, it will still be there for you to worry about when you get back. Youâre not looking forward to returning to a shitshow, but what youâd hate even more is to tarnish the memories of this place just because you canât keep from being vindictive for not even a weekend.
âI was born on a Wednesday too, so I guess bad things come in fours sometimes,â you continue, chuckling to yourself humorlessly.
A frown appears on his face almost instantaneously. âWhat is that supposed to mean?â
You shrug. Jungkook turns his body toward you, which makes you spare him a glance before you return your gaze to the horizon. His face is so serious that itâs almost funny. âY/N,â he presses. âWhy would you say that?â
âCâmon, itâs a joke. I was just being self-deprecating. Lighten up.â
âWhy are you talking like that?â
âLike what? Contrary to popular belief, I donât walk around with a thundercloud over my head all the time,â you laugh lightly. âI figured if there was a day to be nice to you, it should be today. And tomorrow, I guess.â
âThis is you being nice?â
Funny how just a few weeks ago, you were fighting with him and calling him a hypocrite. Now, youâre sitting together, watching the sun set, trying not to be mean to him.
âIâm not picking a fight with you,â you say. âThis is nice enough.â
âItâs not even my wedding.â
âOkay.â You glance at him again, letting words flow without a single thought. âIâll be even nicer to you on your wedding day then.â
You donât know where that even came from, but something aches the very second the words leave your mouth. The thought of him getting married one day makes you just nauseous, even though you always knew that it was a possibility. It might even be inevitable.
You clear your throat, waving the sullen feeling away. Your body shivers then, even after the added warmth of his jacket. Maybe youâre not shivering because of the cold anymore.
He doesnât say anything, but you can feel his eyes linger on the side of your face. The both of you keep tiptoeing around an elephant that follows you wherever you go.Â
You hug your knees close to your chest, watching the blue sky melt into the golden horizon, splattered with ribbons of cotton candy clouds.
You want to scooch closer to him and have him wrap his arm around your shoulders. This isnât the spot where you used to draw your names in the sand, enveloped in a giant heart like two lovesick kids, but wouldnât it be nice to imagine that it is?
âI was always really happy here,â you mumble to yourself.
You were, truly. This city was your pocket of hope, your piece of peace.
Being here brings back so many memories.
Itâs the same feeling you get every time you pass by somewhere you used to live. The nostalgia of walking down the same road you used to walk every day until your shoes wore out. The familiarity of your surroundings. The bittersweetness of looking into a past you cannot hold anymore, of remembering the person you were at a certain period in your life, of knowing the things you do now that you didnât back then.
You long for things you cannot change.
Nostalgia only grows stronger with time, you can always count on that.
He hums in agreement, before admitting quietly, âI miss you.â One pulls, the other pushes. The water wavers, like itâs touched by his words, simple but earnest. Youâre touched too, somewhere in your heart, where you know you should be writing someone elseâs name now.
Should?
âYouâre pushing it,â you say softly.
âI know.â
You look at him. Maybe itâs because youâre back in the city that holds only good memories of you two. Maybe youâre hypnotized by the way the pink and purple hues kiss his side profile, making him feel like a fever dream and not someone you loved. Maybe itâs the cold, making you yearn for any source of warmth. But instead of returning his sentiment, you say, âItâll pass.â
He meets your eyes. Thereâs something pleading in his gaze. All things pass eventually. Time moves forward, people move on. Bad things will pass sooner or later. Your worst heartbreak, your most arduous trials, your saddest moments, they will all pass.
And good things⌠good things will have to pass too, whether you like it or not.
Your fingers twitch from where theyâre still holding onto your body. You itch to reach for his hand. You donât tell him what he wants to hear, even though hereâs a part of you that wants to say it back. In a better world, you would be telling him I love you too, instead of having to suppress an I miss you too.
âAll things have to pass eventually. This will too.â

You clocked out right after you told Taehyung that you would. It wasnât a peaceful sleep though. The anxiety simmering in your belly woke you up a few times throughout the night. You donât even know why you were anxious. Itâs not like you were the one who was about to walk down the aisle.
When morning finally came and you managed to untangle yourself from the surprising comfort of your familiar bed, you practically dragged your feet for the subsequent two hours, trying to get ready. As if that would actually slow down the passage of time.
You had to compartmentalize the things you needed to do in a mental checklist. Makeup. Hair. Dress. Stare at yourself in the mirror for half an hour and internally freak out while waiting for Jungkook to come get you from your room.
Now youâre sitting in the wedding hall, watching people filter into the room. Itâs not even a lot of people, but youâre still overwhelmed regardless.
You feel so exposed, even though heâs the only one looking at you in this room of strangers. Heâs been looking at you like that ever since he first saw you this morning, in a dress that you got just days before the wedding. You still donât know if itâs entirely appropriate for your ex-boyfriendâs brotherâs wedding - maybe a bit revealing - but it was the only one you could find on such short notice.
When you tried on the dress for Taehyung and Jimin a few days ago, Taehyung said you looked beautiful. Jimin said you looked decent, âsix point five out of ten,â which translated to âpretty niceâ in Jimin-lingo. That wouldâve been enough if you were going to any other wedding, not one where Jungkook would also be attending.
You had wanted him to see you and regret ever leaving you.
It was a silly thought, just a tad adolescent.
You had wanted him to see you in your dress and be consumed with thoughts of you until he couldnât even see straight. To be the only thing on his mind, you didnât think it was a lot to ask for.
That was before he told you not to think about it and youâd been convinced to just go with the flow just for two days. It was before he actually did see you earlier today in your dress - a simple midnight blue satin cowl neck with a slit in the thigh - but you were the one rendered helpless and speechless. He had stared at you for a minute when he came to walk you down from your room, then heâd said, all breathless even though both of you were just standing there, âYouâre beautiful.â
Youâre beautiful, not You look beautiful.
You donât know why, but you appreciated it.
It made your cheeks burn underneath your artificial rosy blush. Stupid, you thought to yourself when you two made your way to the main hall. Stupid for letting yourself get dizzy because of a single compliment from him.
Youâre seated with his parents, which makes sense because you donât know anybody here except for them. Well, maybe you know one of his cousins whose kid you and Jungkook used to babysit whenever their family was in the city, but you doubt that he even remembers you anymore.
When the ceremony begins, your heart instantly feels like itâs about to drop to the pit of your stomach.
You canât lie to yourself. It stings.
It stings just sitting here next to his parents like a daughter-in-law, like a member of their family, watching his brother solidify his happy ending.
It stings that Jungkook is standing up there, looking as handsome as ever, but his eyes arenât on the couple. They keep flickering to you no matter how much you try to pretend that they donât.
It stings that even though you donât think about marriage often - or maybe you just donât allow yourself to - you canât deny that the thought does cross your mind from time to time. Any time that youâd wander the corridors inside your head, youâd pass the doors that you keep unopened on purpose but thereâs always that one door marked with a bright red X that you can never sidestep.
You watch Junghyun and Sooji with their teary smiles and shaky hands, shaky but happy. Theres a sudden clarity that this couldâve been you and him in another life. Forever is a lie, but you wouldâve perjured yourself a thousand times for him. I do - you wouldâve meant it.
You imagine yourself in Soojiâs place, and Jungkook, standing right on the other side, holding both your hands in his. A beautiful and radiant bride terrified of the altar. A dashing groom with a smile that could rival the sun and shoulders weighing heavier than he lets on.
It wouldâve looked clumsy, but it couldâve been right.
You wonder if heâs wondering the same thing. Maybe he is. You hope he is.
When the ceremony ends with a kiss shared between the newlyweds, you wipe away the tears that well up in your eyes. The people around you do the same thing, but theyâre doing it for the right reason, out of genuine joy for the happy couple. You donât think you can say the same for yourself.
Some of the bridesmaids fawn over him. Itâs reasonable, you suppose. One tends to do that in the presence of Jeon Jungkook.
You watch as they come up to him one by one to ask him to dance, watch as he politely declines until theyâre all stalking away with similar pouts on their faces. You watch him until his eyes lock on you, sitting at a table near the back, nursing a glass of champagne.
He weaves himself with ease through the people making their way to the dance floor. When heâs in front of you, he holds out a hand.
âDance with me?â he asks, his doe eyes working overtime to lure you in with their sparkles, though youâd rather stay here where you can easily go unnoticed until the night ends. âOne song?â
âI donât know how,â you say, even as youâre taking his hand and standing up.
âI showed you how, remember?â
âThat was a long time ago.â
He squeezes you reassuringly. âJust follow my lead,â he says, walking the both of you to the floor. âCâmon.â
Once the music starts, your heels stomp on his feet at least three times before you start finding the beat to move along to. Muscle memory, or whatever, is bullshit. You remember absolutely nothing of what he showed you.
Youâre grateful that the song is slow, because it makes it easier for you to follow the beat with your two left feet. He takes one of your hands in his, the other settling on the small of your back, guiding you to move in a steady rhythm.
You feel his motherâs eyes on the two of you, because she must be somewhere nearby, watching you like a hawk. You feel his gaze on your face while you keep yours on the knot of his tie, just trying to keep your composure and to not step on his feet with your heels.
The blur of white that you catch from the periphery of your vision makes you turn your head. Sooji and Junghyun are close by, swaying together slowly to the soft music, both of them glowing with happiness. She must sense your eyes on her, because she lifts her gaze up to meet yours. She smiles at the sight of you and Jungkook, and you smile back, because you donât know how else to respond to that.
You donât say it, but you do think it. Your fingers tighten around his hand ever so slightly.
Could that have been us?
If the answer is yes, then it would hurt.
If the answer is no, then it would hurt.
The point of your story is that itâs painful however you choose to look at it. Thereâs no other way to frame it. Itâs just painful, because youâre never going to get any of it back.
You bite your lip, then turn away from the happy couple but you still donât look at Jungkook. You look at your hand in his, and thatâs when you see it.
âHowâd you get that?â you ask, gently tracing the inch of slightly raised skin on his knuckles. You never noticed the scar until now.
âIt was four years ago, I think? After Taehyung and I almost got into a fight, I went outside and⌠punched a wall,â he says, wincing as he recalls the memory.
His answer takes you aback. âYou and Taehyung got into a fight?â
âAlmost,â he corrects. âIt was a long time ago. Didnât they tell you?â
âNo, they didnât say anything. What happened?â
âNothing happened.â
âIf it was really nothing, you wouldnât have punched a wall.â You frown. It makes you miss a few beats, but the song isnât whatâs important now, even if Jungkook is still trying to steer you back into the dance. âTaehyung isnât violent. You arenât violent.â
âIâm serious,â he says finally. âItâs nothing. We were just drunk and stupid.â
You know there must be more to it, that something must have happened or been said to trigger such a reaction from both of them. But you also know that you wonât probably get anything out of Jungkook if he doesnât want to tell you.
You give up, for now. âFine. If you say so.â Youâll just have to weasel it out of Jimin later.
The song comes to an end, before another one comes on. If Jungkook remembers that he only asked for one song, maybe heâs counting his blessings that youâre still here and dancing with him, because he doesnât mention it.
For some reason, you pull your hand away from his, only to slide up his shoulder to lock both of your hands behind his neck. He seems surprised, but he does the same around your waist.
Jungkookâs gaze flickers to your lips briefly, then back to your eyes again. You find yourself doing the same and wonder what he tastes like after all the time youâve been apart. Is he still as sweet as you remember? You used to tease that it was because of the excessive sugar he put in everything, but you knew it was really just him. The few inches between you are so inviting that itâs practically tempting you to close the gap. You could, easily in fact. Blame it on one too many glasses of champagne later if you want.
He looks younger like this, like the boy you loved, starry eyes and dimpled smile. His shoulders are always the most comfortable resting place, the crook of his neck your long lost home. This is nice, you think, to see him again even though it feels like a fever dream. Memories of your first date, your first kiss, come to life before your eyes so realistically that you could almost touch them.
Loved? That sounds funny to you.
The people you used to be, souls wrapped in innocence, when the world was nothing but the arms of the person you loved. You reach out, and the memories quickly fade from view. The only trace they leave behind is a speck of gold on your fingertips, a memento of charming naivetĂŠ for you to tuck neatly away in the corner of your mind, but also a reminder that ah, they only exist in the locket of your heart now. Because he has changed, and you think you must have too. Life, as they say, goes on.
âWe made it. Kind of. Thatâs crazy,â you find yourself saying.
âDid we?â
âYou donât think so?â you chuckle. âWeâre in a group chat with the Kim Seokjin who spams it with bad jokes on a daily basis. Iâd call that a win.â
That makes him laugh. âIf you put it like that, yeah, maybe. Sure.â
Other people might be fooled, but it doesnât sound at all convincing to you. The light doesnât really reach his eyes. You bite the inside of your cheek, thinking of how to translate the sudden poignant turn of the moment.
âIt isnât everything you hoped itâd be?â you ask.
His shoulders rise then fall quickly in a second-long shrug. âI thought it would make me feel more⌠fulfilled. But it doesnât. Not really.â
The way he says it and the way heâs looking at you makes your heart dive. You understand what he means. Youâre good at what you do, and you donât need reassurance from anyone to recognize that. But sometimes, it doesnât feel like itâs enough. Doesnât feel like itâs real, like itâs validated.
When you landed your first big project, even before Yoongi, you were so proud of yourself. You were bursting with excitement but you werenât happy, and you knew what the reason was. Something was missing that couldnât be filled, not even with all your friendsâ hundreds of messages of encouragement.Â
Itâs beyond stupid, this feeling like your wins amount to nothing at all just because of one person. You wanted him there to celebrate every achievement with you and he wasnât, and the milestones seemed incomplete without the presence of him. It doesnât feel like youâve accomplished anything because this always used to be a dream you thought youâd make come true together.
âItâs lonely,â he concludes.
It sounds like he feels the same way, like he wanted you to be there too.
He suddenly holds you tighter than you think he needs to, like heâs afraid to let go of you. You imagine that he doesnât want to let go of you, and it makes you feel better for a second. But it doesnât change the fact that he still did in the end. And he will have to when this ends.
What was the point of this? Why did he bring this upon yourselves when he seems to be as hurt as you are? All of this time, all of these years, lost to what? You couldâve been happy together but instead, you were both lost and miserable.
When the music stops - you lost count of how many songs itâs been - you pull away from him. He looks disappointed, maybe even a little hurt for some reason.
âIâm gonna get some air,â you say, already turning away from him.
âY/N-â
âI need some air.â Then youâre weaving through the dancing couples despite Jungkook calling your name. How did he manage it? How did he not look back when you called out for him?
You hastily grab your coat on the way out. Itâs not going to keep you warm, but thatâs not something youâre even remotely concerned with.
Itâs everywhere, you feel it down to your bones.
The wind wraps itself tightly around you, intertwining in your hair, slipping through the cracks of your fingers, caressing your face in a chilling touch. You greet the cold like a long lost sister, shivering violently with nostalgia. It was there for you more than your own flesh and blood.
Is that why you like the sea at night? Because it reminds you of mom?
Itâs dark out here, barely anything is visible except for a lighthouse sending out light in the quiet of the night. You canât see much, but you can certainly hear it. Youâre not sure if the music is coming from inside the venue, or if itâs still ringing in your ears. Itâs probably the latter; youâre too far away to be able to catch the music anyway. But regardless, the tune is quickly drowned out by the sea.
The waves crash violently against the shore like itâs out for blood. Thereâs a magnetic pull, as if itâs calling out for you. You want to go to it, to reach out and feel the cold outside of your body for once, but you stay there despite your legs itching to stand up and run straight ahead. Into the water and down under.
You could lie down and close your eyes for a moment. The sound of the water, as sharp and brutal as it is, nurtures a part of you somehow.
You just want to be alone. You donât want to talk to Taehyung, or Jimin, or even Yoongi.
Oh.
Yoongi.
Itâs a terrible feeling, knowing that youâre going to hurt Yoongi. Knowing that youâre going to kill this even before it has a chance to truly begin.
Truth be told, you canât envision a future with Yoongi. There isnât anything wrong with him, because heâs not the problem here. Yoongi is fun, heâs considerate, he keeps things light on purpose for you, until youâre ready to initiate something more serious. Heâs good for you, even Taehyung thinks so.
But you canât love Yoongi, not in the way that he wants you to. Not more than you love Jungkook.
There you go. Ruining things again.
Did you ruin Jungkook? Is that what happened?
The layers on you are no match for the sea at night. The wind hisses relentlessly, biting at any part of your skin thatâs exposed.
It takes you back to that night. Almost everything does, actually.
Maybe thatâs why you never even stopped to consider starting anything with anyone, because it always ends. If thereâs a beginning, then there will be an inevitable ending. Love isnât made to last and you arenât meant to carry love with you. Youâve been abandoned twice. If it happens a third time, itâs a pattern, and then your hypothesis will only be proven. That the problem here is you.
Youâd be lying if you said you havenât wondered when itâll finally be Taehyungâs turn to leave. He eventually will, right? That oneâs gonna hurt.
Then, youâre startled when someone calls your name.
âWhatâs wrong?â Jungkook asks. The wind and the waves masked the sound of his footsteps walking up to you. When you turn around to face him, his eyes grow worried, almost panicked. âWhy are you crying?â
You breathe out irritatedly before you hastily wipe at your cheeks. You didnât even realize that youâd been crying. âNothingâs wrong. Iâm fine,â you say, though you both know itâs a lie. âIâm just tired. Iâm going up to my room.â
He catches your wrist in a firm grip when you try to walk away. You wish heâd just leave you alone, but you knew he wouldnât drop it just like that.
âI said Iâm fine,â you insist.
âYou were crying,â he says. âDid I do something wrong?â
He didnât, at least not tonight.
God, you really donât want to do this right now.
âJungkook,â you warn. âLet go of me.â
You try to free yourself from his grip, hoping that heâll get the hint and back off for now. Instead, he pulls you into his chest, where you struggle to escape from his hold until you realize your efforts are futile. He takes the windâs place, wound tightly around you, so tightly that itâs nearly impossible for you to move.
You hiss out his name, but he doesnât budge.Â
âJungkook, can you just- Fuck!â
Damn him.
You realize heâs not giving up, which in turn makes you give up struggling, hoping that if you let this be a moment, then itâll be something that can pass.
Youâre just standing there, letting him hold you, letting yourself be held by the person who broke you in the first place. This feels exactly like where youâre supposed to be - in his arms, with your face hidden in the crook of his neck, his gentle fingers stroking your hair. Thereâs not a lot that you could do but lean into that feeling the same way you lean into him. One foot in the sand, one foot in the past. A hand on the doorknob of time, wondering if you should look back or look forward.
You want to be alone, but that never used to apply with him.
The wind stills, the sea calms. You remain unmoving too, locked in his embrace. You feel the faint rhythm of his heart, beating faster than you think it should. If you could, you would bottle this moment up and live there forever.
I miss you, you think.
I miss you.
I miss you.
I miss you.
Then your arms are around him too. It only makes him hold you tighter, and all you can think about is how much you miss him, how painful it is to miss him, how you feel like youâre being pulled apart at the seams from the weight of missing him.Â
Fuck.
Can you pretend that the last few years never happened? Is there a higher power that would allow you to go back to the night before that wretched Wednesday, when everything was still perfect? Hundreds of days of your life, can you pretend that it was just one long nightmare? When you wake up, youâll be back in his humble apartment, tangled up together in his bed. Warm sunlight, your silken youth, and him. It was all you ever needed.
Again with the devastating familiarity. The city, the beach. His motherâs warmth that always made you reminisce about your own motherâs coldness. How Jungkook used to find you in moments like this and just stayed by your side until the dejection passed. He understood that he could never understand it the way you did.
You hear yourself sniffle, then you feel him press a kiss into your hair. Home is comforting.
Oh, you never want to leave.
You donât want to leave, and thatâs terrifying.
You allow yourself to stay there for one more second - one endless second - so you could commit to memory what itâs like to be with him. Back and forth. Itâs always so easy to fall into him.
Jungkook releases you when he feels you loosen after a while, and you reluctantly meet his eyes as he tilts your head to face him. His fingers cradling your jaw, how warm and delicate they feel on your skin.
You swallow thickly, your mind going blank. Heâs the only person you see, the only one that matters. His eyes flicker south, and even then you donât make any move to run away, despite his loose grip on your waist telling you that you can if you want to.
You told him that it would pass, and maybe for him, it will. For him, itâs the city and the moment, making him feel like heâs caught up in a page that heâs turned over a long time ago. He was fine with leaving, and heâs been fine without you. It will pass for him, as much as it hurts you to admit it.
But not for you. For you, thereâs only him. Thereâs nobody else but him. Itâs always been him, no matter how hard you try to tell yourself that there will be another person you can love as much as you love Jungkook. You might only be a page, perhaps even a chapter, in the story of his life, but heâs your entire book. Heâs volume after volume after volume, until he takes up the whole shelf and leaves no room for anything else, not even for yourself.
And now here he is - at the biggest turn in your career.
Heâs a bad blood cell you canât ever get rid of.
Youâll never be able to truly let go of him. How could you? When you truly love someone, those feelings will carry on forever. Theyâll always have a piece of your heart despite an ending. When you look back on a certain period in your life, youâll think to yourself, Youâll always be a part of me. I loved you then.
But Jungkook is a force of nature. He has your whole heart.
Years and years from now, when you look back on your life, you know youâll see him everywhere. Even when youâre old and gray, and when faces all just blur together in a mosaic of broken memories and long lost youth, you know youâll still remember him - the person you loved, the one whom you let slip through your fingers. The great love of your life when you were young.
Sometimes, you regret that day. You canât help feeling like it was your fault too. Maybe you shouldâve tried harder to keep him. You shouldâve fought harder, shouldâve held onto him instead of standing there and watching him leave.
He lit the match, and you let the house burn. It takes two to tango, two to break a heart.
Youâre quick to let people leave. Oh, how you wish it could be that easy to let them go too.
It isnât until your eyes mimic the flicker of his gaze that he leans in. You meet him halfway. For the first time in years, you feel like you could breathe, truly breathe. Itâs achingly slow, like neither of you can believe that this is happening.Â
You sigh against his mouth when his tongue brushes your bottom lip, slips past the seal to devour you. It feels like a perfect dream. You could stay in this bubble with him forever, pretend that youâre the only two people who exist in the world and thereâs nothing else, no one else, waiting for you in a city that seems so far away right now. The thought of him never left you, not even for a second. Heâs always been with you everywhere you go, no matter what you do, always in the back of your mind.
He tastes like your youth, like remembrance. He kisses you like heâs still yours when deep down you know that youâre still his. The hand on your jaw is gentle but firm, and it makes you repeat a thought, I miss you.
Then a feeling, I love you.
Not then. Now.
I love you now.
I love you even when I shouldnât. Even when it hurts. Even when you leave me. Even when you donât love me more than I love you. If there comes a day where you love somebody else, I will still love you then. There will never be another person for me but you. My first and only love.
When he pulls away, you think itâs too quick, even though your lungs are grateful for the breath that you instantly inhale. You stare at his lips like youâre in a daze, mesmerized, wanting to chase them again. You donât even know how you have it in yourself to utter these next words, but you hear your own voice saying them anyway.
Youâre holding onto him now. Doesnât that count?
âLetâsâŚâ Your fingers tighten on the collar of his dress shirt. âLetâs go up to your room.â

Chapter 48
(Chapter 47)
True Form Sukuna x Reader
Rating: Explicit
Warning: Graphic Depiction Of Violence
Please see Chapter 1 for tags!
Epilogue
Leaves and twigs crack under your feet, leaving trails and patterns on the snowy forest floor.
Itâs night. Darkness interrupted by red, little sparks flying through the air. The stinging smell of smoke creeps into your nose. Remnants of the moonlight, far away, quietly shine through the branches of the trees, painting creepy shadows on the white canvas youâre walking on. The further you walk, the more those shadows dance on an orange tint, that starts to coat the snow, coming from a source, that youâve set up not far away. Carefully, listening to the sounds of the forest, you walk back to that source.
A flame, a campfire. Right here, in the middle of the woods.
Step by step, youâre approaching that fire, holding wood in your arms to keep it burning. The sound of munching echoes in your ear, the sound of feasting, devouring.
Itâs been years, since he liberated you. Unintentionally freed you from a miserable life in a miserable village.
Not knowing, what you were destined to become.
A destiny that no one foresaw.
Not even the King of Curses.
Coming closer, you can see the silhouette of your King, sitting on the very same tree he did a year ago.
When he waited night for night, waited for you to go back with him.
You start humming his melody, as your feet carry you back to the fireplace. The fireplace that made you fall in love with this monster, before you put the new wood down onto the ground.
And then, quietly, you turn to him, watching how heâs gnawing some meat off a bone, occasionally humming in satisfaction.
Itâs been months, since you completed the ritual.
Since youâve been killed and reborn and marked with a sign on the skin that covers your heart.
Months of being his and him being yours.
In the shrine you can now call home.
You look at him and smile softly to yourself, finding it cute how invested he is not to waste any meat thatâs on that bone, although you have plenty left.
Sitting down on the log to the left of your King, you feel the warmth of his body on your skin and hear his gentle munching in your ear.
And you feel your love for him, still, despite putting you through all this. You lost your heart to him and, no matter what he did, you donât want it back.
Ever again.
Asshole.
Itâs been days since the both of you came back to this place.
A place you cherish in your heart.
And maybe, you hope, Sukuna cherishes it, too.
The crackling of the fire becomes louder and his noises quiet, making you both just sit there in silence, next to each other. He flicks the bare bone into the flames, before you gently lean against his shoulder, let your head quietly bump against him to be closer, feeling his calm breath beneath your soul.
And both of you just watch the fire in front of you, like you did so many times a year ago, when neither of you could express whatâs going on.
Heartache.
Itâs been seconds, since he let you know how he feels about you.
Although he never says them out loud, those three words that youâve told him over and over again and still do.
But he doesnât has to. Because, you know.
This curse.
So overwhelming, so consuming. Tying your souls together so tightly.
And some words donât need to be spoken to be true.
Sukuna grabs another piece of meat and holds it under your nose. You cooked it yourself, with fresh herbs that you found earlier in the nearby bushes. It smells delicious. You lean back and sit straight again, before you grab the meat and take a bite.
Itâs hot, warming you from the inside. You keep blowing and carefully gnawing and nibbling, until you finally can rip off a bigger piece. Feeling his bottom pair of eyes watching you constantly, you peek over to him quickly.
âWhat?â you ask with your mouth full, making him smirk, as he musters your stuffed cheeks and big eyes.
âNothing.â
You pause your chewing, pondering.
âIs it how I eat?â you ask, already knowing the answer.
And he doesnât respond, just keeps focusing on the fire, a hint of his smirk still decorating the corners of his mouth. The flames flicker in his red eyes, the orange light dances on his face and wrinkles. You canât help to take them in, over and over again, although you already know his features so well, as if theyâve been imprinted on your eyelids.
So beautiful.
You smile to yourself, before you focus back on your meal, until you throw the remaining bone into the fire. Satisfied, you sigh, until you swallow the last bite you took.
Suddenly, something cold gently falls upon on your forehead and you look up. Delicate flakes of fresh snow are illuminated against the dark canvas of the night, falling down right upon you and Sukuna.
You smile softly, before you turn your head to look at him. Heâs looking up into the sky, too and you witness, just in time, how a small flake lands on the tip of his nose, melting in an instant. You huff lovingly, before you gently touch that very spot with your finger. More flakes follow, landing on his mask, his eyebrows and lashes, before he opens his mouth, trying to bite your finger thatâs resting on his nose.
Clack.
His teeth close around nothing and you quickly retrieve your hand to poke him into his shoulder instead.
Hard.
It makes his lip twitch, before he leans down to you, close to your face, cocking his eyebrow.
âHarder.â he whispers with a smirk, with this⌠undertone.
And you blush, remembering itâs what you moaned into his ear last night.
When you felt cold and the fire was not enough to warm your moving bodies.
When your skins and limbs and lips were intertwined, like those of lovers are.
When you kissed each other and hold each other dearly, when your hearts started to miss each other and their embrace.
âAre you sure?â you mumble, trying to keep composure. His gentle eyes roam over your face, scan how your delicate skin rushes full of extra heat.
And then he nods, almost unnoticeable, almost hypnotised, as his gaze falls down to your lips.
The string on your heart pulls you in, let your breaths collide and mingle, until they merge, as you start kissing him on his soft lips while feeling small, freezing flakes fall upon your faces. He quietly sighs against your face and keeps squeezing on your beating heart, before you gently lick and suck on his tongue and bottom lip.
âOkay.â you breathe against his pretty mouth, your breath and heartbeat quickened. âWait here.â
His pupils are blown, already drowning in your being, before you stand up and walk into the snow.
You feel his needy eyes bore into your back, the string on your heart pulling harshly.
To make you walk back to him, to devour your flesh once again. Like last night, like lovers do.
But first, you crouch down, shove some snow between your hands and form a ball. Then, with all your strength, you turn around and throw it at him. Sukuna leans back to dodge but-
Bam!
The snowball hits his shoulder with a wet impact, shattering in a million pieces.
And you gasp in victory, as you throw your arms up in the air.
âAhhh hahahah!â you exclaim, before a wide grin spreads onto his lips and he flashes his teeth. A sadistic, aroused chuckle escapes his throat, as his eyes flicker right at you, as he slowly rises to his feet, cracking his neck and knuckles, before he growls in excitement.
âSo, you wanna play?â

Bartender pt. 2
WC: 2.1k
Warnings: alcohol consumption
Parings: Schlatt x Reader
AN: more setup and character building, the next chapter will focus more on Schlatt
I love yall!! Hope you enjoy :)
You watched the clock across the bar while absentmindedly wiping down the counter. The little hand ticking closer to the next minute provided minimal joy, but meant another minute closer to going home.
3:47
3:48.
The bar was fairly vacant this time of day, with the sun still being out and most patrons wrapping up their day at the office. Of course there were a few early birds partaking in their choice of drink, but they were typically the one drink and done type. The kitchen got more action from this crowd than you ever did behind the bar. It was also a Thursday, another factor that limited the amount of customers wandering in. You moved to the ice machine to refill your well, deciding to wipe that down, too. Not like there was much else to do.
After returning with the bucket of ice and dumping it in, three men strolled on in. You greeted them while one broke off from the group and made his way towards the restroom.
âWelcome on in! Seat yourselves!â Your cheery voice rang. One of them turned and waved a hand as a âthanksâ, flashing a small smile. You took note of how young they all looked, a contrast to the other occupants inside, then returned the ice bucket back to its home.
I hope one of them actually buys a drink.
You sighed, looking around for something to refill or deep clean. It was hard finding things to keep busy with on weekdays, especially afternoon weekdays. There were only so many bottles of liquor to dust or beer taps to polish before becoming tedious. You settled on rolling silverware, occasionally glancing up from the task to peek at the men.
They settled into a booth after their friend had exited the restroom, sharing a few laughs. They were discussing something about a sponsorship from what you could gather. Itâs not eavesdropping if theyâre talking loud enough for you to hear.
After about fifteen minutes, one of them got up and strolled over to you behind the bar. He stood there impishly and waited for you to notice. You placed the silverware to the side and turned to take his order.
âWould you like me to run a tab for you?â You asked, looking up at the man.
âYeah, what would be great,â he smiled. Taking in his features while he recited an order, you couldnât help but notice how soft his eyes looked. They were warm, an amber-ish brown color, with long eyelashes, reminding you of bourbon: you could get drunk on them alone.
âAlright, I just need to see-â before you could finish your sentence, three IDs were placed on the counter. Checking over them, you nodded in approval as he picked them up, securing them in his jacket pocket.
You took in more of his face. Strong nose and wide chin, facial hair growing down his jaw. He was very attractive. And also very tall. While his face was inviting, his stature was imposing, towering almost a foot (if not more) above you. You continued to input his order into the register, feeling your face grow warm.
âYou got it, boss. Iâll have those out for you in just a moment.â You grinned while moving back down the bar to start the drinks. One lager from the tap, a grasshopper, and a double whiskey neat. Easy enough. You started the lager first, pulling the tap with your right hand, while reaching to grab a whiskey with your left, pouring it into a rocks glass just below the shelf. You stopped the lager once the foam was just about perfect, keeping an eye on your pour of whiskey. Maybe thatâs a little more than double. Oh well. Returning the bottle back to its home on the shelf, you then grabbed a bottle of crème de menthe and crème de cacao, holding the bottles in one hand while reaching to scoop ice into a shaker with the other. After pouring, you placed the lid on the shaker, gave it a rough few tosses, removed the lid again, and gave a hearty dose of heavy cream. Replacing the lid once more, you shook it a few more times before pouring it into a coupe class, and garnishing it with a sprig of mint.
Once the three drinks were complete, you turned around to hand them to the man that had ordered them. You looked up at his face and blushed, noticing that he was staring rather intently at your back. I hope youâre not gonna be one of those customers.
âHere ya go!â You ignored his gaze and handed the drinks forward, trying to brush off the way this interaction was making you feel. He shook his head and exchanged a quiet âthanksâ before a blush would creep across his own cheeks, turning around and making his way back to the table with his friends.
Normally when a man would stare, it boiled something deep within yourself and made you cringe, uncomfortable and unnerving. However, something about this guy made you feel⌠nice? Maybe nice wasnât the word. Confident? Regardless, this was just another transaction with another customer and meant nothing. He hadnât tried to actually hit on you, and seemed rather bashful that he was caught. You turned around and hummed to the song playing over the sound system, picking back up silverware to roll.
-
A few hours had passed and patrons had come and gone. It was an early night for you, which meant being out of the establishment by 8:30. Looking up at the clock, still ticking by too slowly for your liking, it was 8:15. Fifteen more minutes.
You were thankful for the hours you got here. Weekdays you were out by nine at the latest, giving you enough time at wind down with homework before getting comfy in bed. Your boss had been kind enough to work with not only your school schedule, but your schedule at the diner as well. What a saint. She had been understanding of your situation, what with needing to work two part time jobs because the full time market with flexible scheduling wasnât exactly flexible when it came down to your class schedule. And sure, taking only a few credits per quarter and being online helped a lot, but most places were looking for nine-to-fivers, not only-available-mornings-and-nighters. In no world would working two jobs be ideal, but this was mangable for you. This is manageable for now.
You made sure to restock your bar, take the bussing bin of used glasses back to the dish room, and prep garnishes before clocking out at 8:30 on the dot. The night bartender would always be handed over a neat station, with all tabs lined up on the POS ready to be cashed out. Youâd worked a handful of twelve hour shifts to know how frustrating an unstocked bar could be when another bartender hadnât pulled their weight or side work during their shifts to leave in any state other than perfect. You exchanged a few words with the closer before walking to the back of house and getting your bag to head out.
You pulled your hair out of the messy ponytail it was in and raked your fingers over your scalp, sighing at the feeling. On days like this, (slow afternoons with mostly older crowds) letting your hair down was the first step to winding down for the day. You stood up straight and stretched before snatching your bag from the desk to walk out for the night.
The weeknight bartender waved you over as soon as she saw you emerge, the tall man from earlier standing in front of the register.
âEverything all good?â You asked her, seeing a receipt and a few bills cash on the counter.
âEverythingâs perfect! Just wanted to make sure you got your last tip before heading out.â She smiled, sliding the stack towards you. You reached out to grab at it when the tall man placed his hand over yours. Thereâs that damn blush again. He cleared his throat before speaking up.
âIâm sorry if I made you uncomfortable earlier, I was just impressed watching you make our drinks. My friend said that was the best damn grasshopper heâs ever had,â a small smile tugged at his lips, almost as if he was embarrassed to be speaking with you. âJusâ wanted to pass that on.â You returned the expression.
âThank you, I hope yâall had an enjoyable night.â He removed his hand and nodded shyly, his friends leaving the booth and making their way over to him. Pocketing the tip, you ducked out the door not knowing how to continue the interaction while feeling a pang of guilt for not even getting his name. You shook it off as you took off towards your apartment, aching feet begging for the feeling of warm fuzzy socks and your comfy bed.
-
You hadnât even walked through the door of your apartment when the cries of your cats became audible. Chuckling, you unlocked the door and stepped inside, kicking your boots off while greeting the starving felines.
âMel, I know you think youâre dying when you go more than eight hours without wet food, but the lack of crunchies in your bowl says otherwise,â you joked at the cat as she rubbed up against your legs. You walked over to the couch and set your bag down, trying not to trip over her. You bent down to pick her up, scratching under her chin. âLetâs get you fed and ready for bed, yeah?â She chirped back at you in response. You carried her into the kitchen with the other two trailing behind you. You placed a kiss on her head before setting her down in her preferred food-receiving spot on the counter.
Your night would start the same way your morning would begin. Getting three ceramic bowls out of the cupboard, and opening up a fresh can of Fancy Feast for your three non-human children. Of course Mellie was first, followed by Oats, and lastly Bones. No other order would do. Washing your hands after serving dinner, you considered what to have for dinner. Pizza, Alfredo, or Fajitas. All TV Dinners, of course.
You settled on Alfredo, removing the meal from the freezer and popping it into the microwave. Your mind wandered to the topic of the essay you needed to finish, mentally mapping out which direction you wanted to present it. The microwave beeped bringing you out of your little trance, and you swiftly removed the tray and grabbed a fork, settling back down on the couch much like you had earlier in the day.
You powered on the television and thumbed through the applications presented. Thank God for Roku. Clicking on YouTube and waiting for your feed to pop up on the screen was the second step to winding down for the night. You scrolled through uploads for a few moments, blowing on the plate of Alfredo occasionally, until settling on a video about the history of Nintendo.
You ate in near silence, the tv only on at a low volume. Throughout the meal, you tried to brainstorm ideas for your essay. You werenât too happy with the current direction it was going, but knew it was too late in the quarter to switch topics or start over. You sighed, swapping the now clean plate for your laptop on the coffee table, and began to furiously type away.
You werenât sure how long you were staring at the document in front of you, but it felt like you should have had more written than you did. You only managed to get through a few paragraphs before abandoning ship. The cats had all settled down around the living room, which inspired you to do the same. You saved the document before closing your laptop and returning it to the table once again. You stood up to stretch, snatching the discarded plate to place in the kitchen sink before retiring to your bedroom.
You couldnât help but feel guilty, determined to have made a sizable dent in the essay, only to neglect the task at hand to daydream. Sure, you often got distracted doing homework or projects, who doesnât, but the source of your diversion tonight made you feel slightly embarrassed.
You couldnât stop thinking about the man at the bar. About his gentle brown eyes, his soft-looking chestnut hair. Even his facial hair, a bit scraggly but somehow endearing. See? Embarrassing. He made you feel like a schoolgirl, butterflies fluttering around inside your chest. He had said maybe a total of five sentences to you and you wanted to lay down on your stomach and kick your feet in the air. After changing into pajamas and climbing under the covers, you let your mind run free, trying to recall every detail about him.
You remembered his name started with the letter J, having only glanced to verify his age when he handed you his ID. Was it Jason? James? Jared? You couldnât recall, but hey, at least you knew it started with a J. Against better judgement, you unlocked your phone and opened up Tinder, deciding to swipe and see if just maybe this guy would magically show up. Maybe he was local and was just out for some cheap drinks with friends from out of town. Maybe heâs only in town for some family thing, linking up with buddies from college. The possibilities were endless, much like the men you continued to swipe past. Your eyes began to feel heavy, the grip on your phone weakening. The search can continue tomorrow. You plugged your phone in to charge, quickly checking to see that your alarms for the morning were set, before locking the screen and drifting off to sleep.

01:15 â Introduction
BenÂ
And we're back. This week we have brought our good friend @twig-tea back with us. Say hello, Twig.
TwigÂ
Hi everyone!
BenÂ
Twig, who has watched way too many showsâfar more than meâis joining us to talk about two pulps this week. We're gonna be talking about We Are the series from GMMTV and Knock Knock, Boys! from WeTV.
Before we get into that, I think it'll be very beneficial for us to set a baseline on what a pulp is. Twig, you've watched over 600 BLs. How would you describe a pulp, considering most BL is basically indie cinema?
TwigÂ
One of the things that's characteristic of a pulp is normally low production values and formulaic plots; but formulaic plots, you could argue, is kind of one of the defining features of BL. So, when I think about what a pulp is in the BL space, I'm usually thinking about particularly inferior writing, sensationalist beyond the normal level of unrealistic storylines, racy, and anything that's, like, particularly cheap-looking or feeling.
BenÂ
I feel like a lot of the times we're using pulp as a way toâmaybe not intentionallyâbut it ends up being like a derisive way to refer to a project. And for me, if I'm describing something as a pulp, I'm talking about something that felt like it was very quickly produced to turn moneyâwhere it doesn't feel like there were a lot of people in the room who are overly concerned about individual choices that went down in the production and how they contributed to a whole. You can feel, sometimes, that different groups worked on different parts of a project, âcause some parts of it work really well, but maybe don't connect to others.
NiNiÂ
So, I have not watched 600 BLs. But my definition of a pulp, I'm thinking lower production values. But to me, that's not necessarily a bad thing. I think that when you are looking at a piece of work that doesn't have a lot of budget, it can bring out some really interesting things in the production depending on how creative people can get. And I think that's a good way to look at it going into these two in particular, because on the one hand, you've got a pulp that probably did spend quite a little bit of money. And on the other hand, you have a pulp that clearly didn't have a lot of money to spend, but used its money well. So to me, the low budget aspect, or the minimal production aspect of things, doesn't necessarily have to be a bad thing.
TwigÂ
Yeah, I completely agree with that. I think the characteristics of a pulp are about how it feels, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's bad. I feel like people use the word âpulpâ whenever they just mean that a show is bad, and that's not the same thing.
NiNiÂ
I don't watch nearly as much as you guys. What are some of your top pulps? What are some of the pulps that you'll always watch?
BenÂ
Make It Right, every time.
TwigÂ
Yes! Cosigned.
NiNiÂ
That is a great one.
BenÂ
Despite our impending conversation, I still feel very positively about Make It Right.
NiNiÂ
What about you, Twig?
TwigÂ
I wasn't ready for this question and I always take forever to answer a âfavoritesâ question. So, I will say my favorite one that I've seen recently, the one that I still think about every so often after watching it, was Lady Boyfriends. I talked about it in the last seasonâs Grab Bag episode. It was a remake from 2014, and it has a lot of problems, but it's still doing a lot of really interesting things.
NiNiÂ
My favorite pulp is always gonna be Love By Chance. Love by Chance is extremely problematic in a lot of ways, but it's got a lotta heart to it.
BenÂ
So much New Siwaj references in a lot of this. I think my other one will probably be... probably Rainbow Prince.
TwigÂ
Ahh Rainbow Prince is so good! See, Ben's actually naming good shows, I'm just naming weird shows. [Ben laughs]
NiNiÂ
I always tread lightly when Rainbow Prince is brought up on the show, because I still have not finished watching it and Ben will not let me rest until I finish watching it.Â
BenÂ
That is much to your chagrin.
NiNiÂ
And he is correct. I just gotta find the time.
Ben
Mm mm.
All right, so let's stop dancing around this thing. Let's dive into it.
05:56 â We Are: The Branded Pairs
NiNi
We'll start by talking about We Are. Ben, break it down for us. What is We Are about?
BenÂ
We Are the series is about how GMMTV can make so much money by just putting boys that people like in front of you in an almost plotless device for 16 weeks.Â
We Are the series is about a group of college students who are in two different schools that are vaguely connected to each other by one person in common. Through a series of interactions two of them come into conflict-slash-flirtation immediately between an art student and an engineer. Other guys have crushes on each other. And much of the show is about the slow matriculation of these crushes through the BL TikTok filter.
NiNiÂ
What is the BL TikTok filter?
BenÂ
It's the fact that all of the sequences are filmed with the boys as close to each other in the center frame so they fit on a vertical phone for the quick hits on TikTok.
NiNiÂ
[sing song voice] The more you know.
BenÂ
Well, it's about virality. The head of GMMTV has said that they no longer care about ratings. What they care about is virality. They care about hitting those kilig moments to make sure that you get all the butterflies you wanna feel. And they're going to blast that moment into socials so that it goes viralâthe same way the gifmakers on Tumblr are going to rush to gif the most BL moment of the episode so that they can be first to get the notesâitâs the same thing that GMMTV is doing. As soon as that episode ends, they're gonna be on YouTube with the highlights and they're gonna be on TikTok and Instagram with the short reel so that those can go viral and get pushed out and they can draw more viewers to their socials to gain more advertising dollars as a result. And to maximize that on the thin frame of the vertical screen, almost all of your big BL moments now are gonna be filmed like you're watching a TV show from the 1960s and we're still on 4 by 3 screens again because the frame is so narrow on a phone.
NiNiÂ
I am not of the social media generation, so it's always fascinating to hear how this stuff has moved on while I have ignored it. [laughs]
So, let's get into the show itself. So, as Ben intimated, this is a show with a lot of boys and... multiple friend groups coalescing together into a whole. And along the way there's a lot of little romances. There are four main couples in this thing. GMMTV, what they've done here is that they have utilized casting as a shortcut for certain things, which I actually thought was kind of a smart way to use casting.Â
We talked before, maybe a couple of episodes ago about the art/commerce nexus, and I talked a little bit about why because of it, the branded pair system doesn't bother me as much as it bothers others. I thought this was actually a good use of branded pairs if you're trying to get people to watch somethingâputting a show together that relies on your affection for some of these people. It really helped pull you along through the show until it got to the point where the show itself started to pull you along. I thought that was really clever, actually.
TwigÂ
I guess, if you're accepting the premise that we're not gonna use writing to do that, [laughs] which is the part that I'm upset about, but maybe I'm jumping ahead.
BenÂ
Before we get thereâtwig-tea, you're an archivist who's been watching the genre for like 20-plus years. How about you walk us through the four major pairs of boys that are in this and how their current pairing in this show reflects the way they've been branded previously?
TwigÂ
There are four central relationships in this show. Phum and Peem, played by Pond and Phuwin. PondPhuwin have been a branded pair for, I want to say three years.
NiNiÂ
Started in Fish Upon the Sky.
TwigÂ
Have been in Never Let Me Go, and then the Our Skyy episode for Never Let Me Go, as well. They also do a ton of branded pair things in between their shows and have played in heterosexual series in between their appearances in BL. Pond and Phuwin tend to playâŚhow do I describe this dynamic?Â
BenÂ
They really like for Phuwin to be low-key pissy about something all the time and for Pond to smile back at him for it.
NiNiÂ
It's a grump and a simp.
TwigÂ
Yeah, Grump and Simp. Thank you.Â
The next one is Q and Toey, played by Winny and Satang.
NiNiÂ
They first appeared in Fish Upon the Sky as well.
BenÂ
They have a minor appearance together in Star in My Mind.
NiNiÂ
They were kind of pre-paired in Fish Upon the Sky. Like, there was like a thing, but it didn't actually turn into a thing.
TwigÂ
They first appeared as a firm couple with any real time on camera in My School President in 2022. That was a rivals-to-lovers storyline. In We Are, they've changed it up, which was actually quite refreshing, and the relationship between WinnySatang is a mentor-mentee relationship. It's Winny who's the grumpier character, and Satang plays a very actually happy-go-lucky outgoing character that is very different to their appearance in My School President, so it's interesting to see them do something different.Â
Aou and Boom play Tan and Fang. They first appeared inâŚEnchantĂŠ? But I don't think they actually got together in EnchantĂŠ.
BenÂ
I gotta be honest, I don't remember.
NiNiÂ
I do not remember anything about EnchantĂŠ.
[all laugh]
TwigÂ
I want to say it was mostly unrequited with a hint of them getting together at the end, but don't hold me to that. I really don't remember very well.
BenÂ
I do know that we saw them properly together in Hidden Agenda.
TwigÂ
Before that they were very heavily shipped in Vice Versa. And I think they got, like, one, like, cheek kiss at the end of Vice Versa. And then Hidden Agenda, that was their first, the show where they were properly a couple. Now what do I remember about them in Hidden Agenda? [laughs]Â
`Ben
Nothing!
TwigÂ
That show is so forgettable.
BenÂ
They had an interesting thing in Hidden Agenda, because you had Aou playing a known closeted jock type character who really cared about his boyfriend but was incapable of coming out of the closet, and it caused real strain in their relationship.
TwigÂ
Yeah. So they had an extra lot of angst because they were an established couple but couldn't be seen together. Most of the time we saw them was about that, about the tension in their relationship.
NiNiÂ
The best thing that happened in Hidden Agenda, easily.
TwigÂ
Interestingly in We Are, they play a couple that, apparently in the book, was an established couple, but they rolled that back so we got to see them get together. The dynamic is a little flipped almost, where Aou plays the very heavy simping character, and Fang is just sort of bemused by his energy and into him, but not nearly as effusive.
NiNiÂ
It's a puppy-kitten dynamic.
TwigÂ
There you go, puppy-kitten. [laughs]Â
And then the last couple, ChainPun, played by Mark and Poon. Poon had to come in very last minute to replace Mark's former branded pair partner, who he's been with since My Gear and Your Gownâwhich was 2020, so actually quite a long time.Â
But I will say that Poon stepped in and did a great job blending with the whole group and I would say after watching the series I could not tell where they had to reshoot and fit stuff in. That was one thing that I think they handled really well.
14:37 â We Are: A Rorschach Test of a Show
BenÂ
I'm just gonna transition us to the next part pretty awkwardly. I did not like this show, and I had to drop it after five weeks because it was pissing me off. Because the two of you finished this showâI want to hear about what was holding you into the show before I start picking at it.Â
We'll start with you, NiNi, because you loved this show so much. This show...upheld your psyche for like four months. How? Why? Please!
NiNiÂ
[laughs] It did, it did. It's a combination of things. For me, it came at exactly the right time and hit exactly the right buttons in me, in terms of what I needed at the time. And even looking back on it now, even though I'm a little ways out of what I was going through at the time, I still find it quite comforting.
The two big parts of it that I really, really love. I love the way that the center of this show is about the friendship, it's about the multiple friend groups and how they become this one big friend group. This one group of silly boys who just enjoy each other's company so much and wanna spend all their time together. It's got this kind of a real time nostalgia element to it where I could see this show being somebody's reminiscence about a time in their life that they want to remember incredibly fondly. When they were young and they had this big group of friends and all they wanted to do is hang out with their friends and have a ton of fun.Â
I described it when I was writing about the show while it was airing as giving me Hospital Playlist vibes. Hospital Playlist is a Korean drama about this group of friends who are all doctors working at the same hospital, and it's just about their lives, and them bringing people in, and them falling in love with people. I'm not saying that this is at the Hospital Playlist level, but it gave me the same energy, and Hospital Playlist is one of my favourite dramas of all time. So I enjoyed that aspect of it.Â
The other aspect of it that I really enjoyed, this is part where I was talking about where they use the actors that you love to sort of pull you along until the story takes over from that. Tan and Fang, as Twig said, they get together during the show. And at first you don't understand why and how and what is even happening there. And then I think it's episode nine, so itâs just a little past the halfway mark of the show, that Tan tells his friends the story of him and Fang, how they met and how they got together. And it makes you understand everything that's gone before and everything that the show is trying to do in terms of how it's trying to organize itself.Â
I had so many thoughts about it, like, is there another way that they could have done this to front load this? Like I said, it's more than halfway through the show and you have to get there. And if you don't, if the show is not pulling you along to that point, then you're not gonna get there. But, it changed everything.Â
The show is fluffy, and it's sweet, and it's just very wholesome. And I really responded to it. Just talking about it now, I feel kind of a glow. I enjoyed it a whole lot.Â
I'll save some of the other stuff for when we're actually talking about New Siwaj and how New Siwaj constructs shows and why this show worked for me in some ways that some other New Siwaj shows havenât.
BenÂ
I was gonna say, are we excusing a New Siwaj flashback to justify an Episode 5 reveal four episodes later all of a sudden? Please play the Double Savage recording, man in the booth.
NiNiÂ
No, no, no, no, no, that's entirely different. [Ben laughs]
And that's what I'm talking about when I say that how they actually used the actors, and the casting, and the branded pairs in this was actually a really smart use if that is how New wanted to do it.Â
I appreciate New Siwaj as a creator. He pisses me off, but I appreciate him. One of the reasons that he pisses me off is that he has great narrative strengths in some ways. He also has a lot of respect for, like, the minutiae and the details of daily life and shenanigans between friends, which I appreciate, but I find interfere with his narratives when he's working on something that's narratively focused.Â
To me, what happened here is that this was not at all narratively focused. What he did here is the same thing that he always does. It's a big group of friends just hanginâ out with each other, the minutiae of their daily life. But it's not interfering with a narrative that I wanna get back to. And so I can just sit in the vibe of it. To me, if New wants to write a narrative show, I want it to be narrative. And now I've realized that if New wants to sit in a vibe, he actually knows how to do it.
BenÂ
Twig, you finished this show. Why?
TwigÂ
I finished it for two reasons. One, I'm a completionist. And so I finished it for the reason why I watch a lot of shows that I don't like. Spoiler: I didn't like this. [laughs] And that was so that I can understand what it did to the end and fit it into my internal understanding of what's happening with the genre at any given time.
I summed up both reasons in one thing. I spent a lot of the time watching the show trying to figure out what it was trying to do, why it wasn't working for me, and thinking about how it fits in in the wider context of what's happening in Thai BL.Â
BenÂ
We heard NiNi's reasons for why she loved it so much. Please detail for us why you had such a difficult time with it.
TwigÂ
NiNi alluded to it a little bit. This show is not narratively driven; there's no throughline, and that's the reason why I watch television, is for a story. The way that I watch shows is I'm paying attention to what characters are doing in the scene I'm watching, but I'm always thinking about how they connect to the scenes before, what that could mean for the future. And this show gave me nothing for my brain to grip onto. Scene to scene, things were happening that were fun to watch, but I couldn't enjoy them because I was thinking about how they didn't connect to the scenes before. And I was getting frustrated by that. And then I would get sort of bored because a scene in isolation isn't interesting to me. I ended up, like, spacing out a lot and then having to rewind, and then realizing after rewinding that nothing had actually happened, and I didn't have to rewind at all. [laughs] Didn't miss anything.Â
So it was a really frustrating watch for me just because of the way my brain works and processes shows. The show takes place inâit's not just a BL bubbleâI almost call it like a plot bubble. Almost nothing bad happens. And any conflict that does arise is resolved within an episode. I understand why that would be comforting and relaxing to some people, but for me, I found it very anxiety-inducing, because I was constantly thinking about, why is nothing happening? What is going to come? And there was nothing to be worried about. I wouldn't say necessarily that my experience of the show is a reflection on the show, but it is about how and why I watch shows. This show was not for me.Â
I do want to challenge NiNi's comparison to Hospital Playlist, because I also have seen and loved Hospital Playlist, and the reason why I loved that show and couldn't get into this show was because Hospital Playlist has a very clear throughline. And that was the main thing that was missing for me in this. The part where it took nine episodes to get to the backstory, I found frustrating. And the part that bothered me most about that was that the reveals weren't rewarding you for having paid attention to anything that happened before. It didn't feel like they connected to things we'd seen but didn't yet understand. It didn't feel like the show was grounded in a story that it was laying groundwork for. It was just leading to particular scenes.Â
We were often told that this is why a character's reacting that way, but there was nothing previously that made me understand it or told me that it made sense. Like, we're told that Fang is a bad boyfriend because he isn't attentive or doesn't show affection for Tan, but I don't think we ever see that before they tell us that, other than in the episode where they tell us that that's a thing. We mostly see him just be really fond of Tan the whole time, so I was really confused by why suddenly he's apologizing for being a problem.
NiNiÂ
That's definitely, like, not where I went with that.
TwigÂ
And the Q and Toey conflict happens because Q is upset that Toey didn't tell him that he was his secret Post-It note buddy and his first love. We're told that Q was stressing over feeling conflicted about his feelings for the cafe Post-It Boy and Toey, and then it turns out they're the same person. But we didn't see any of that conflict in any of the episodes that came before. So his anger felt like it came out of nowhere. It was justified within the episode, but we hadn't laid any groundwork for it.Â
That was sort of my experience the whole time. It felt like I was watching 16 specials of a show that I didn't see. So, I've always felt like I was missing context for whatever was happening, even though I'd watched the whole show. It was an uncomfortable watching experience.
NiNiÂ
Twig is actually correct about that thing. It's just, in terms of how we interpreted it, we interpreted it in two different directions. The show treats the audience like they're a member of the friend group and not an omniscient observer of any kind. As the characters learn things about each other and their backstories, that's the same time that the audience is learning it. So the show in that sense has, like, a little hint of immersion, doesn't give you hints before. If a character is gobsmacked, so are you. If a character is surprised by something happening, so are you. For me, that works, for Twig it doesnât. And I completely understand.
The show is almost kind of like a Rorschach in that way. Like, it depends on what things about media you like, how you like to consume media, what are things that you enjoy that you don't enjoy in media. I like sitting in a vibe. The show is a vibe for me. Like I get to see people just kind of hang out and do their thing and be themselves.
I really responded to that. And so the lack of narrative drivers and groundwork laying and all those kinds of things that if it was a more narratively focused show that I would be looking for, once I started to feel the vibe that the show was going for, I was able to sit back and just soak in it and enjoy that part of it.Â
Twig is quite correctly identifying what the show is doing. It's just that worked for me and it didn't work for her.
TwigÂ
Yeah, it just hit us both really differently. I think that's valid.
BenÂ
The show did nothing! And for that, I despise it. [Twig laughs]
Here's the thing. There is so much BL to watch. The idea that I'm gonna spend nine weeks to figure out what the deal is with these boys is just not gonna happen for me. There's too much to fuckinâ watch. And there was no driving angst or drama to any of this.Â
We mentioned Make It Right as the big pulp we love from New Siwaj. In that show, there is real drama with the boysâ relationships. Both of our major pairs of boys have very unfortunate first times that create a lot of confusion between them in their relationships that they have to work through while also dealing with the coming-of-age pains of being a teenage boy.Â
And there was really just no drama for me to hang on to this. The only real thread that the show had early on was like...Pondâs character punking Phuwinâs character about demanding indentured servitude for inflicting medical expenses on him for kicking him in the nuts or some shit. I just found that to be deeply repellent because I don't find slavery narratives cute? Like, you must work for me or whatever shit. No, I do not find that as a fun way to turn stuff into romance. And I got deeply put off in episode five with Aou's character confessing to Boom's character, and Boom's character cutting off the confession. Because it felt like every time the show was coming close to an important core emotional reveal about a character, it intentionally interrupted the moment to avoid any sort of specificityâand winking at the audience to be like, you know what this is.
That may be fun for some people, but I found it boring, because it means that there's nothing specific about these characters to hang on to. That was the point where I just couldn't deal with this anymore. They took all the B- and C-list BL boys at GMMTV and dumped them in a 16-week, basically, hangout project of IG reels to fulfill a financial obligation to iQIYI.Â
That's the thing I want to talk about here, too. This was not like a freemium product on YouTube. You had to pay money to watch this for like the first month and a half before they started rerunning it on YouTube. So people were paying premium dollars on iQIYI to watch, essentially, a show about just guys hanging out. I was bored by it because these guys weren't that interesting. The most interesting thing we had with any of the guys going on was Phuwin's character's angst about his art not measuring up to what he wanted it to be. That was about it.Â
It was frustrating for me seeing so many people raving about this because there was really just so much of nothing here. It felt like the ideal kind of pocket gay. New usually has interesting things to say about the queer experience in one way, shape, or form. Even in the shows we've talked about on here that we didn't like, like A Boss and a Babe, had some interesting ideas about queer reality that I just did not feel from this show in the first five weeks. I put over five hours into a show that had nothing to say. That's more than enough. That's longer than a J-BL.Â
It's fine as, like, background noise, I guess, but I need to care about something going on in the show if I'm gonna sit down and pay attention to it and invest my emotional energy into it. I can't marinate in a show like this. There's nothing to think about for me, and everything I did think about felt kind of insidious. Like, what's the point of these gays clumping in a world where there's no problems with being gay? The reason we clump is because we're ostracized, because we're the only people who will tolerate each other. Why does that occur in these situations where there is no reason for gay people to feel weird about being gay? That's one of the constant frustrations I've been having with these sort of bubble shows. I can't feel gay empathy and connection with these stories because some of the foundation is missing.
30:47 â We Are: Final Thoughts and Ratings
Ben
I'm just very frustrated about this experience and what it means going forward, because this was probably super cheap to film and they probably turned a tidy profit on this. So that means there will be a lot more of this. And it's called Perfect Ten Liners, there will be 30 episodes of this. I'm looking forward to your report on that one, NiNi.
NiNiÂ
I think I'm only gonna watch one of those stories, actually. I see how there's a line from this to Perfect Ten Liners and it's also being done by New Siwaj. But for me, given GMMTV's now stated goal of, they're not tracking ratings, they're tracking socials, given what that means for how they're looking at some of their projects going forward, I don't think it's going to be everything that they do. But yes, they're gonna do more of these. And if they're gonna do more of these, I think as far as a template this is probably one of the better templates, âcause there are other ways that this could have gone. This one was balanced in a way that works. I don't think from what I've seen coming out of Perfect Ten Liners or so far it's going to be balanced in the same way.Â
GMMTV is experimenting with the art commerce thing, sort of more leaning towards the commerce because that's what GMMTV is. I can't call them a CBS because they don't have that kind of thing, but they're like the CW, let's say, of Thai youth media. This is what you get from CW sometimes. If I didn't see other things coming both inside and outside of GMMTV, I would probably be more concerned, but for me there's so much out there right now. There's a ton of variety lately, I don't watch nearly as much as you two, and that's maybe part of the rest of it as well. For me, somebody who watches maybe 15 to 20 shows a year, it's just part of the constellation and it doesn't feel like a canary in the coal mine kind of thing, but that's just me.
BenÂ
See, but the difficulty is we're seeing this in a lot of the shows, though. There's been this constant thing with not even just GMMTV, but they're sidestepping having to say things about gay shit in these shows. We talked about it in 23.5, we talked about it in Only Boo. The concern for me is, apparently, We Are the Series did really well. And GMMTV is brutal about what they're gonna fund. They're gonna fund the shit that's gonna make them money. If this sort of ungrounded fluff is what makes the money, that's what they're gonna make.Â
The problem for me with fluff is I need to feel like the characters suffered to earn it. And there's not a sense that the fluff here is earned. There is a notion that is kind of romantic that, yeah, gay guys could just be just guys beinâ dudes. But mmph, did this feel weirdly alien while I was watching it. And I was really repulsed by it. That sucks because I like everybody involved. I just could not enjoy this at all and was deeply frustrated by it the entire time.
TwigÂ
To pick up something that you were saying, Ben, I think NiNi is right that the friendship as the core of the show is one of the better things about it, but one of the reasons why that wasn't enough for me is because I couldn't read this as found family because there was nothing for them to unite against? There was nothing for them to be there for each other about. There was no challenge to that friendship. They just ate a lot of barbecue and traveled a lot. I couldn't believe that they would last because they hadn't experienced anything to actually challenge that. You don't necessarily have to have it in the show. The show can be all fluffy, but if there's nothing even in the history to support that these guys have been through it together, then it's hard to know how they would respond to an actual problem.
NiNiÂ
So all that said, do we actually rate this because it's very clear that there's a dichotomy, not just within the group here talking about it now, but generally about the show. I'm not sure if a rating is useful. What do you guys think?
BenÂ
In terms of where I always recommend from, I always rate on the, do I think people should watch this? Who do I think this show is for? I think I dropped this show at a 4 because I was really repulsed by it. I don't think that's fair reflective to the technical work that went into it, but for the type of reader that I think I'm trying to speak to, I canât even recommend this show at all. I found the whole experience rather empty. I don't go to TV to fill the show with my own, I'm smarter than the people who wrote this stuff or I will fill in the gap stuff. I don't like doing that in gay shows, so. I can't recommend this show. Not to the viewer I think I'm speaking to.
NiNiÂ
Twig, how about you?
TwigÂ
I don't always rate everything, so I really struggle to rate this. I'd probably put it at like a 6? I don't wanna take away from the fact that there are people who don't watch shows like I do who found this very comforting. Like you were saying, it's about what you're looking for in shows and how you watch them.Â
But the part that's frustrating for me is that there was so much time we could have used to tell a story. [laughs] And so, I find it hard to forgive that. We don't actually get a lot of 16 episode hour-long shows, so it's hard for me to not begrudge the time.
NiNi
Obviously, I enjoyed this a lot more than you guys did, but I have two different ratings for it, actually. On terms of the enjoyability of it for me, it's hovering somewhere around like an 8.5, 9. But on the technical merits of the show, I would probably max it out at a 7.
TwigÂ
If I was going by my enjoyment, it would be a 4. [laughs] It was honestly painful for me to watch this.
NiNiÂ
That's valid, friend, that's valid. Two out of three means that it's not a recommend from The Conversation.
BenÂ
I don't think we need to give it a harsh number rating, but legit, what's the angst of this show? What's the story? What are the drama here? I don't know, if you don't feel like swiping IG, put this on instead.
38:21 â Knock Knock, Boys!
NiNiÂ
Let's move on to the next pulp that we're going to discuss here. Knock Knock, Boys! by WeTV.Â
Ben, what's Knock Knock, Boys! about?
BenÂ
Knock Knock, Boys! is about four men who move into cheap housing because they're all running away from something in their lives. Together they form one of the more effective friend groups we've seen in a long time and pair off into two really satisfying relationships to follow for a solid eight episodes.Â
We get in this show a really good presentation of age gap friendships amongst queer people. I really liked that we got to see developing relationships between young people alongside developing relationships between working people. We also got in this show a really great examination about how you love someone out of the closet. And for that, I will be forever grateful.Â
I liked this show a lot, comparatively to the last one. This show also had a lot of our faves in it, and they showed up to work!
NiNiÂ
New faves and some classic ones, one of the classic faves being Seng Wichai who is well-loved on this podcast. Okay.
TwigÂ
Can we talk about Best? Because Best has been in the biz since 2017. He was in I Am Your King where he got to kiss Mark Siwat. I'm always so happy to see his face and I think this was by far his best role. It's really nice to see him in a role that can highlight his skills.
NiNiÂ
We talked a little bit about the overarching theme of it, but let's get into the details. The show has got, like we said, these four guys, they split off into two couples. Almond and Latte, who are in university, and Peak and Thanwa, who are just entering the working world. The way that these two pairs embody the angst of those two stages of life is really interesting.
BenÂ
I think the difference between the last show and this show. During the last show we're mostly angsting about whether or not it's okay to like a show that's basically a glorified IG reel. This show has a plot and all of its characters have something going on with them. They have a clear want or desire.Â
We've got Latte who is an amorous pansexual man who's having a great time in college. Too great of a time, in fact. One of his professors says if your ass is late anymore for my fuckinâ classes, you will not graduate. So he has to move closer to school because he's taking too long to get out of bed from one of his conquests to make it to class on time. Almond is finally out from under the maybe-too-sheltering thumb of his mother. And he is lying about his lodgings because he wants to live amongst the poors [laughs] instead of the security guard, ultra safe system that his mom wants him to live in. Thanwa is leaving a not great relationship with another man, and Peak appears to be running from compulsory heteronormativity.Â
What's really interesting is when these guys are breaking the ice, they're telling each other truthful things, but they're also holding back in a way that felt really earnest. I find a lot of times in these shows, because they need to exposit things to the audience, these shows tend to have characters overshare with each other in a way that doesn't feel real. I thought this show did a great job of giving the audience the information we needed about why these guys were in the situation they were in, but giving the kind of polite answers that real people give each other about their situations.Â
They needed a way to get these guys to start working together. So they create this conceit in which Almond really wants to hook up with this boy named Jumper, played by Pak Varayu. I totally understand why. He promises a year's worth of rent to whoever helps him score with Jumper. Hijinks ensue as the other three boys start trying to befriend Jumper and create scenarios for Almond to spend time with him so that they can get together. In the process of befriending Jumper, who we realize has a boyfriend already, Latte develops feelings for Almond and Thanwa and Peak end up growing closer together as well.
We follow Latteâs complex journey he has with people misunderstanding who he is as a pansexual person. Almond being an enthusiastic virgin who's very amped to explore his body and what he finds pleasurable. Thanwa is struggling with the thing we all struggle with in our 20s: Do we wanna do the job that's the thing we dream about doing or do we take the safe option, and what does that say about the other aspects of his life? And then Peak is deeply closeted because he doesn't want to let down his father. These are all really interesting threads to follow, and the show doesn't ever really forget where the characters are and what their experiences reflect in the way they respond to scenarios that arise. We get this great evolution of relationships over time.
One of the things that I thought the show did really wellâI kind of want Twig to talk about this part a little bit moreâis we get Almond's initial crush on Jumper, and then the show breaks that crush by systematically making Almond recognize that maybe Jumper is not who he wants to be with.
TwigÂ
I loved that sequence so much. Almond has a crush on Jumper and his new roommates are creating circumstances to bring them closer together in order to win rent for a year. That culminates in more and more situations where Almond and Jumper are in the room together and it's awkward. [laughs] Almond doesn't really know what to say, or Latte's with him and Latte and Jumper have more in common than Almond and Jumper do. It was very subtle moments, Almond's crush being whittled away at.Â
And the party which they have at their house results in everybody getting really drunk, Jumper gets really drunk because the roommates are helping to make him drunk so that he'll be more receptive to Almond, and Almond is also being made drunk so that he'll be a little bit more relaxed. Jumper ends up getting so drunk that he gets really sick. We see this in so many shows where someone will get really drunk and then have a moment where they break and make out or have sex or confess or whatever, and what I love about the way they do that in Knock, Knock Boys! is that being really drunk is not sexy. It is not romantic. It is gross and it is unpleasant. And Almond dealing with disgruntled, loud, annoying, unwieldy Jumper and then a really gross Jumper when he vomits all over everywhere. And then he shits himself! Oh, it was so good.Â
You could see the moment on Almond's face where the pedestal that Jumper had been on in his mind just collapsed and he realized, oh, this is a human being that I've been into and he's a gross human being, who vomits and shits and smells really bad right now and is actually [laughs] the opposite of attractive. So they help Jumper clean up and then Almond has to sit with his new realization and process his emotions.
Ben
NiNi, you're a big fan of Seng Wichai. I would like for you to unpack his character, Thanwa, and the work he did in this show.
NiNiÂ
Seng plays Thanwa and Thanwa is the mom friend. Thanwa is the one who takes care of everybody. He feeds the group, he guides them a little bit. And when he meets up with Peak, Peak basically is zoned out and also eats like an animal. Thanwa is a foodie, food lover, really into food and cooking and so he decides he's gonna teach Peak how to really enjoy and savour food. And that's how they bond.Â
Thanwa himself is a complicated character. He's got this sadness to him, and Seng Wichai always plays these weird, cringey characters with an undercurrent of sadness to them very well. Thanwa is probably the least weird, cringey character he's ever played, but it's still got that undercurrent of sadness and melancholy. It makes you wonder, oh, what has this character been through? Why is this the way that he is? And over the course of the show, you get to see some of what he's running from, what is making him sad, and Seng plays every beat to me perfectly.
When things start to change with Peak, you see the sadness because Peak can't, in his mind, get all the way there in terms of how he feels about Thanwa. You can see that makes Thanwa really, really sad as much as he likes Peak and he enjoys his company and he is falling for Peak. It's a great little dynamic and Seng plays every nuance of this character so well. He understands Peak and what Peak can and can't give him. And when he decides that he's going to give Peak grace and support for whatever it is that he wants to do, because at this point it's not just about their relationship, it's about Peak's life, there's joy in there, but there's also sorrow.Â
It's a great character for Seng and I am very glad to see him in this. Every character I've seen Seng play at this point has been great. The boy can pick âem. I will say that much.
BenÂ
I think it's really notable that in the genre that's always using food as love, the not-so-subtle thing is Thanwa is literally teaching Peak how to experience pleasure, because it's clear that the boy does not when they first meet him.
48:39 â Knock Knock, Boys!: Sex Positivity
Ben
This was probably the most sex positive show we've watched this entire year. This show, through almost every single beat that it wanted to follow, had positive things to say about people's sexual relationships with each other, no matter how messy they got.Â
Early on, we get this instance where Peak is fairly certain that he made out with one of the roommates the very first night he stumbled into the house. And at first he's not sure if it's Latte or Thanwa, because Latte's kind of a flirt. We get this eventual resolution where he realized it was Thanwa and apologizes for kissing Thanwa like that, and then asks if he can kiss him again properly. This is probably the point where I sat up and was like, hold on, this show might be actually serious about some of its ideas. Because that sequence when they were in the closet during the party was so pointedâparticularly when Jane shows up the next morning and opens the door on them and they fall out.Â
Twig
Yes!
Ben
Really excellent stuff.
There's another great bit that comes up. So, they have this friend, Lukpeach, who's a great character. I really love the new class of girl friend in BL who's doing supportive in a really fun way. It's the next evolution of the fag hag that we've gotten that I'm kind of into. I really like the way Lukpeach was constantly about supporting all of the gays around her so that she could write her stories about them.Â
They have this sex ed club where they're talking about gender and sexual identity, safe sex practices, respecting people's privacy. So we get this whole bit where they're having a conversation about âdon't record people without their consent, and especially don't create revenge porn about people by posting them without their consent.â And it feels like Almond's not really paying attention during that moment. And he has this moment where he realizes who Jumper actually wants to be with, that he's not actually available, and Almond's disappointed about this. This is right around the same time that someone records Jumper with Sean and then posts it. And there's this brief moment where the show leads the audience to suspect that Almond may have recorded Jumper and Sean in the shower and posted it online. They reflect this by having Latte turn on Almond and briefly think that Almond could have done that.Â
This becomes a fault line between Almond and Latte, and then a huge line between Jumper and Almond, because this show plays the consequences of outing very seriously. Because of the video posted about Jumper, he is kicked off of the school's football team. He gets outed to his family and he was not trying to come out to them at all because he did not know how they were gonna react to that. Jumper confronts Almond about this, because he had ample reason to believe that Almond was there, and he's pissed at him. He's like, âI thought you were my friend. How could you do this to me?âÂ
It takes the Scooby Gang a really long time to suss out who was the actual culprit behind this. And there are social consequences for Almond for a while over this, where a significant portion of the student body is one, being super nasty to Jumper, but also simultaneously shaming Almond for doing that to his friendâor so they think. They end up revealing that it was Thanwa's ex who's been the one walking around recording people, and then they send his ass to jail.Â
This was a really excellently handled plot. I like that the way the consequences played out across all of this happened in a believable way and was taken super seriously.
NiNiÂ
Because the plot line reverberates out, there are repercussions for Almond and Latte and there are repercussions for Peak and Thanwa. Almond at this point is kind of depressed, he's sad, so Latte tries to take him on a trip that leads to some new wrinkles and complications in their relationship.Â
There was stuff going on with Peak and Thanwa, that when it became known to them that Thanwa's ex, who he had briefly moved back in with because of everything that was going on with Peak, that he had done it, something that happened in that moment of discovering that. This led to reverberations in Peak and his relationship.Â
How the events reverberate and impact the group as a whole and then the individuals and the couples within it, I think it's actually constructed quite well for a show that clearly didn't have a lot of budget, didn't have a high production value or anything like that. They used their narrative time and they used their budget well, they built a story that worked for the time that they had, for the talent that they had, for the everything that they had.
TwigÂ
One of the things that I think might pass an international audience by, but really struck me as super important was the depiction of sex toys. Sex toys are illegal in Thailand, they're punishable by, I think it's, like, two years in prison if you're caught selling them, and owning them is also not legal. And so depicting sex toys on screen, it's actually quite a radical act for Thai television. To encourage the use of sex toys is also a pretty politically strong statement for Thai TV, so I just wanted to call that out as a really impactful thing that the show did, and I think did really well. It did a really great job of showing someone in Almond who had never seen a sex toy and was immediately fascinated and distracted. [laughs]
NiNiÂ
The way he stared at it. He could not believe this thing. He was just kind of mouth open looking at it like he couldn't even focus.
TwigÂ
Boy was thirsty.
BenÂ
That boy skipped home. He's like, I got my first dildo and I can't wait to use it! [Ben and Twig laugh]
TwigÂ
And we got to see him experiment with his sexuality that way and to play with the sex toy a little bit and I thought that was an amazing thing to include in a show in any context, but particularly in a Thai television context.
One of the things that was a fun thing in any show but was a particularly political move in this show was Latte taking Lukpeach to the sex toy shop because they could have been arrested if they had been caught together going there. In context of where I am in Canada that wouldn't have really struck me as anything other than kind of a fun cute thing to do with a friend, and it speaks to a certain level of comfort and sex positivity but, itâs politically charged in a way in Thailand that you might not necessarily be aware of.
BenÂ
I think it's important to point that out, because this show had an 18-plus rating and it's because they talked about sex the way they did. They actually didn't depict that much sexual content on screen.
55:51 â Knock Knock, Boys!: Our Fab Four (and Jane)
Ben
Speaking of, like, depicting the complex situations around sex, you mentioned the beach trip they go on. One of the better beach episodes we've had from the genre in a long time, because there's a lot of needing to unpack from some difficult things and big reveals about the characters that come out of that one. That's the first real moment where Latte and Almond physically acknowledge the attraction that's been building between them for multiple episodes at that point.Â
They end up in a complex makeout that could have turned into sex, that then stops, that I think really sets the stage for the rest of what develops and makes Latte one of my favorite characters we've gotten this year. He was so patient with Almond and was always capable of meeting Almond emotionally where he was. Almond took a while to get comfortable with actually doing sexual stuff. And even though Latte made it clear he was ready and down and wanting, he was able to communicate that in a way that didn't feel like he was pushing Almond beyond his comfort zone. Which lets us later get these great I wanna have my first time conversations with both Peak and Thanwa where we get to let them give him useful advice.Â
I really love the way these boys consistently rallied for each other when some shit was goinâ down. When one of them was having problems, they were really concerned about them and wanted to find a way to help them out. That was just really lovely. We know these boys have each other's backs, âcause they went through some real shit together.
TwigÂ
Latte was on it, being able lie to Almond's mother immediately.
NiNiÂ
It wasn't even a question. He's like, âOkay, we lyinâ to mom? I'll help.â Right up until they got caught. And then he was just like, well, you're gonna have to tell her what's going on.Â
I wanna talk about the Peak arc coming towards the end and Peak and Jane and how all of that played out.
BenÂ
Jane was a great character. We learned that the reason why Peak is so stressed all the time is his mom died and this sort of brings an end to this really loving, idyllic family that he had. His dad becomes cold in his grief and is constantly kind of hovering. Peak is struggling himself, he can't perform the way he used to about school and work and all of these things. He basically sort of closes himself off trying to be this ideal son for his dad. And so when his dad eventually tries to arrange a marriage for him with a family friend that's maybe financially beholden to them, he doesn't really say no to this because he doesn't wanna let his dad down. But he also can't hide from who he is, and so he just runs.Â
Jane eventually finds him, and she tries to be patient with him. Like, she clearly knows his deal, tries to help him with Thanwa, but she won't say for him what he needs to say for himself, which I thought was really fascinating. Once he gets caught by his dad, he goes back with his dad and finally, after so many times that he should have said the damn thing, finally says to his dad what he needs to say about who he is. And we get this really great apology from his dad.Â
What's so fascinating about Bestâs performance in this is I think a lot of people conflated Best playing Peak as kind of spacey with his Love By Chance guest role. And I think that was maybe a little unfair because he was just doing a bit for that character as a very, very, very tiny role. But here, Peak spacing out is basically pain management. He can't stay present in the moment because he's suffering so much, which is, I think, one of the parts of the show that is understated, but in a way that I think is really good.
When I talk about being able to connect to the queer angst of a character, I can see how much Peak is suffering the whole time. That is most evidenced by the way he transforms as soon as everything is out in the open. The last episode and a half of Peak is like watching a completely different character because he's not burdened by the expectation anymore. You can see how quickly he becomes the boyfriend he's been wanting to be this whole time.Â
And truly, Thanwa won because man, he put in real patience and effort with that man and he got what he wanted. Good for him!
TwigÂ
That whole arc is one of my favorite things in this show and I think the thing that is gonna linger with me most. One of the things that I really love about it is how carefully written it is. When Peak is earlier in the show being so frustratingâI mean the audience is frustrated, his housemates are frustrated, Thanwa is frustrated, Jane is so frustrated. The way that people relate to or respond to him differs depending on whether or not they know what's going on. And as soon as what's going on with him is revealed, that frustration shifts. Thanwa is still frustrated but so much more willing to give him space and time to figure himself out once he knows what he's figuring out, that it's not just about Peak holding back, itâs about his relationship with his father, he was so much more willing and able to wait.Â
Almond and Latte similarly feel like they're sidestepping around Peak when they don't really understand what's going on with him, and then as soon as they do, they're ready to show up for him. They arrange to drive Thanwa to Peak at his dad's house so that they can be there to support him when he's ready to come out just to be there in case he needs them. I thought that was so beautiful. And then when Peak again does come out and shifts, the way that all of the characters respond to his changes. Itâs also very organic and fluid and feels very natural. It was just so well done and felt really well thought out.
Ben
When we say the show is really sex positive, part of sex positivity is understanding that boundaries aren't bad. They're about establishing communication and understanding how your behaviors impact each other.Â
Almond is running away from his mom kind of sheltering him too much. And when he finally expresses this to her clearly, she takes that in and apologizes for overstepping and maybe smothering him too much. So when they're like, âAll right, now that we've gotten that resolved, we need to go save Peak.â And mom's like, âCan I come?â âNo, mom, you can't come.â She goes, âOh, okay.â And she doesn't push back. She's like, âOkay, well, I understand. I'll pay for your lodgings and your transportation." They play this for mild comedy, but this is actually really good. Mom does have a tendency to get over-involved, and they don't want her jumping into their guy problems here, but they don't want her to not be involved per se. They give her a way to feel like she's helping because she's got all this money.Â
It's the same thing with Peak when he finally comes out properly to his father. His father apologizes for the conditions he created for Peak and tries to take steps to rectify that. That's actually a really special thing. Everyone loved Peak enough to wait for him to make the choice himself. We have so many stories about gay people being outed against their will and having to suffer the consequences of that. That happens in this show, too! I really love this show giving us the other end of that, where nobody outed Peak, even though we were all running to shake that man, they let him do it on his terms. And he had a good experience with it when he finally did it. And he says it's the fact that everybody loved him so much that he felt like it was wrong to keep running at that point. That's finally what made him come out on his own terms. That's the big point. You have to come out for yourself, for it to be meaningful and for you to have the courage and fortitude to be out and live out.Â
This show was excellent and I loved all of these boys and their friends and especially Jane. My God, I love Jane. And she was gay! Good for us.
NiNiÂ
That actually annoyed me a little as why the show didn't get a 10 for me, because I thought they were entirely too cute about withholding the lavender part of that lavender marriage.Â
BenÂ
Oh, I sensed it the whole time. I was just waiting for them to confirm it.
NiNiÂ
It would be the one thing if they withheld it but they misdirected on it, and this was in the translations and the subtitles which is why it annoyed me. I know that the word that they're using in Thai is a gender neutral word but in terms of the subtitles, they are not using a gender neutral word. It felt like an unnecessary misdirect for me. That's probably, like, my only little quibble about it. And it's really a translation thing and not anything to do with the show as presented. So, eh, I'm fine. I just had to get it out.
We talked about Seng and Best and I want to give some love to Nokia and Jaonine because I don't think anybody could have done Almond and Latte as good as Nokia and Jaonine. I have some real appreciation for these two boys' talents.
BenÂ
I wanna go to Twig because this is not our first time with Nokia. I did not watch all of Thank God It's Friday. Was Nokia this good at physical comedy in 2017 or â19?
TwigÂ
The short answer is no, he was not. I remember him in that show as standing out as one of the ones who can act. Thank God it's Friday, for context, was a show full of a lot of boys who had never acted in anything before and they weren't given a lot to do and it was a little bit rough to watch. [laughs] I remember him being one of the few who looked like he might have somewhere to go from there. So I was really glad to see him again, but he's definitely improved.
BenÂ
I thought Nokia was so good at the physical comedy of playing Almond. Like, I really just loved watching that boy move around and react to literally everything that was happening. He felt so present in every scene he was in. Best and Seng are really good at that too. And it was nice to see a newer performer, for us at least, be able to match that energy.Â
Jaonine was really charming as Latte. It was really fun to watch an actor play a guy who looked so comfortable in his own skin. All these guys are super tense about something going on. Peakâs fighting the closet he's in. Thanwa is struggling against normie expectations the whole time, and Almond just wants to get fucked so bad. It was so refreshing to see a character in Latte played by Jaonine that was very much not as stressed out as the rest of them.
TwigÂ
And he owned his sexuality in a way that was really refreshing, too. I love his refrain of, âI'm bisexual, but I'm still choosy. I don't do sleep with anyone, excuse you.â [laughs] And I think this is something that you actually have mentioned, Ben, in your thoughts on the show. I just love how he leaves all of his past relationships or interactions positively it seems like. So he keeps running into people who he's had sex with in the past and everyone's just happy to see him.[laughs] It was really refreshing to see people who have a very active sex life and have that be a positive thing in their life rather than a negative thing.
NiNiÂ
I just wanted to pick up on something that you said earlier about the fact that Latte is probably the only character who's not stressed and you enjoy watching that relaxation that Jaonine plays through the character. But when Latte does get stressed, I think Jaonine is also very good at making that feel uncomfortable. Like, Latte is not comfortable with the idea of being stressed out by things, that's not the life that he wants to live. And you can see the tension in his body and how it feels unnatural. I thought he was actually really really good at that aspect of this character.
BenÂ
We got so lucky that we got such a talented cast here. Even in, like, the first episode or so, there was this weird flirty energy between Thanwa and Latte, and Twig and I were like, [laughs] are they gonna do it? Please let them fuck, we need to let this happen.Â
TwigÂ
I'm still a little sad they didn't.
BenÂ
Sincerely, the point at which I realized this show was gonna be something else was, Latte was living in the house alone first, and was throwing parties and shit and leaving a mess. He's not thinking about the fact that he has a new roommate that moved in and they left a fucking mess. And he felt bad about that, helped clean up a little bit and assured Thanwa that that would not happen anymore. And it doesn't! In so many other stories, his inability to stop partying would be a big part of his character. And it just isn't here. He is constantly capable of respecting other people's space and boundaries. He recognized that he had maybe overstepped with Thanwa, rectified that, and then corrected the behavior. It's a small thing really early in the show. But that was when I was like, this show might actually be on to something. There's a lot of people I like here and they seem to know what they're saying.
01:09:58 â Knock Knock, Boys!: Final Thoughts and Ratings
Ben
I was really relieved to genuinely enjoy the whole ride of this show. It was so refreshing to have a show that was solid, for the most part, the whole way through where we could follow where the show wanted us to go. There were some missteps where I think some batons didn't pass as smoothly as they needed to, but I had such a great time following this. This was a really robust experience with really memorable characters and performances.
TwigÂ
At a time when shows so often write boundary violations as romantic, it's just so refreshing to have a show depict boundaries as healthy and respected and positive things.
BenÂ
Before we go, we have to talk about Almond and Latte having the perfect first time.
TwigÂ
Yes!
NiNi
It was so good. [all laugh]
TwigÂ
Best sex scene of the year.
BenÂ
I have spoken at least once or twice on this show about a Mexican film called Quatro Lunasâyou've probably seen it, Twigâthat has a first time sex scene between two teenagers that is just as awkward as this one. [Twig laughs] And this sits up there.
I really liked how real that felt. It's Almond's first time. The boyâs clearly thought way too much about sex. He cannot relax. They can't really get into anything. It doesn't matter how experienced or good at sex Latte might be, until Almond relaxes they're not gonna be able to do anything. And I like that it's after they give up on trying to make it happen that that's when things click. Whatever happens after we fade away from them, Latte clearly had a good enough time that he was like, âLet's try that againâ the next day, which is also capped off by Thanwa and Peak clearly post-coitus coming down to check on them and asking plainly, âDid you have a good time? Give us the review of Captain Dick here.â [laughs] And he says, âWe had a really good time.âÂ
I really liked that even as part of the expansion of healthy sexual boundaries, they're still giving Almond the space to talk about these sort of things in a way that's comfortable for him. Like, you can tell your friends that you had a really positive intimate experience with someone really important to you. And it gives you the space to be able to tell them maybe if you didn't. I feel so secure about how those boys are gonna be because they're not gonna be isolated and alone whenever they run into any sort of difficulties. They have people who they can talk to about real shit.
I love this show so much. Oh my God.
NiNiÂ
Well, that said, let's rate it. Twig, whatâs your rating for Knock, Knock Boys?
TwigÂ
I gave it a solid 9. I think it had something very clear to say and it said it really, really well. It wasn't a perfect execution, but it was really fun and it overall was a solid effort and I'm definitely gonna return to it. I loved it.
NiNiÂ
Ben, how about you?
Ben
It's also a 9. There are a couple of emotional beats that I don't think land correctly or at the very least did not translate well for me. And I think certain plot lines got closed off in a way that was a little too pat. But I respect what the show is going for with those moments. This show is really excellent and you really should watch it, but it is not, like, a greatest of all time show.
NiNiÂ
I also give this show a 9. I enjoyed a lot about it and my quibbles are minor. And I really loved all the performances. Great job, team!
BenÂ
This is like a 9+ from The Conversation. Sincerely, do yourself a favor and watch this one. We've complained a lot about Thai BL just really not putting together a complete show. We've got one here and you deserve to watch this.Â
In fact, I think one of the big things about the show is that in the first episode we commented this felt more like a romcom and not a BL. And the show said that in the mouth of one of the characters writing about the world, that they wanted it to be more rom-com than the baseline expectations of BL. I really hope this is a sign for the future of what we are capable of making out of this genre, because this was so enjoyable. I was about to give up on watching Thai shows before I started watching this one. I've been strugglinâ out here. It's been hard in these streets.
01:14:54 â Importance of Pulps as Labs
NiNiÂ
Okay, so all that said, what do we think that these two shows leave us thinking about pulps and the role of pulps in sort of the BL ecosystem?
BenÂ
Man, it's just so much easier to talk about a pulp when it has something to say that's interesting. And you can talk about how what the characters do and say reflects the themes that the show cares about. Like, we're talking about whether or not empty fluff is fine in We Are, but we're talking about the actual themes and characters and choices that were made in Knock, Knock Boys! That's such a huge difference, and this is what we mean when we say like there's this huge range in pulps. You don't have to only like the show one way for you to get a lot from it.Â
And that's what I like to see out of these sort of scrappier productions. You really wanna see people with a good story to tell that has a strong thematic core and is able to express that through all of the viewpoints that it has in its story. Like the villain of Knock, Knock Boys! is well calibrated for the themes of Knock, Knock Boys! That's actually really good writing.
NiNiÂ
Twig, what about you, any thoughts?
TwigÂ
I think at the end of the day, whether something is a pulp or not is not a good indication of whether it has something interesting to say, whether it's a fun watch, whether it holds together, whether there's a good story. So take the word pulp for what it means and not for what it doesn't. It doesn't actually tell you anything about whether or not you like the show, I think, unless you have very specific taste. [laughs]
NiNiÂ
I don't watch a lot of the pulps, like a lot of the classic Thai BL pulps are shows that I've never seen. One of the things that I enjoy about these two shows is that they give me some experimentation in two different directions. They are the producers trying something out, pulps are like a lab in that way. The pulp format allows creators to experiment with ideas. Some work, some don't. It allows them to experiment with actors in some cases, and that can be good and that can be not so good, it allows them to just sort of see what's going to work without spending a ton of money. And for that, I can't ever truly knock them. There are not a lot of them that I enjoy personally, but I think that they have an important role to play in the ecosystem of the genre.
TwigÂ
That's one of the reasons why I always try and watch them all, or at least as many of them as I can. I am always really interested in what people can only say in a pulp that they couldn't say in a show that's made by a major production company.Â
I've had some good conversations lately with Shan about City of Stars, a pulp that had some really interesting things to say about being famous and being gay and being in a ship and how those things can and can't exist at the same time in Thai popular culture. Just comparing that to how the same themes are handled in shows by major production companies, you guys talked about it in the Only Boo episode, about how there's only so much that a company that makes money off of selling ships can say about ship culture, whereas a smaller production company is more free to criticize fans. That's the kind of thing that I'm listening for when I watch pulps, is like, what are the things that they could say and do that they can only do because they're under less of a microscope?
NiNiÂ
The scrappy upstarts that could. So, that is going to wrap us up on âGuys Being Dudes,â which is what I'm gonna call this episode.
BenÂ
Absolutely the fuck not! [Ben and NiNi laugh]
NiNi
It's gonna be called Pulpmania. So that's gonna wrap us up on our Pulpmania episode and with that, we out.Â
Say bye to the people, Twig.
TwigÂ
Bye! Thanks for having me again.
NiNiÂ
Say bye to the people, Ben.
BenÂ
Peace!

hey đĽ°
you can do which ones you want/haven't answered yet!
1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 14, 18, 21, 33, 34, 35, 36, 37, 45, 46, 47, 48, 49, 50, 63, 65, 66, 67, 68, 98, 96, 99, 100
wow it's so many....but the prompts were too good. sorry for the bother, chose random ones dear ! <3
Who fell first? Who fell harder?
They are not sure (nor I, lol) of who fell first. Having interest for each other I think was more or less at the same time, but by the time they were sent to Belarus (chapters 6 to 9) they kinda knew it wasn't an innocent crush.
About who fell harder, they both are disgustingly deep in it. Like, eww disgusting.
3. What is their love language?
Acts of service for both of them, and also quality time together, and once they're perfectly comfortable with each other, physical touch. Physical touch like you wouldn't believe, they can't get their hands off each other.
4. Already answered here <3
6. Who would ask the "would you love me if I were a worm?" question? How would their S/O answer?
Oh, definitely Riot, just to mess with him. All serious and all. Like...
''Would you love me if I were a worm?''
Ghost raised his head from his paperwork, unsure if he heard correctly.
''What?''
Riot looked at him, resting her chin on her crossed arms on his desk, staring at him while he tried to finish his paperwork. Her stack was already done and neatly put aside.
''Would you...''
''Why would you be a worm?''
''That's not what I asked''
''Well, I'm asking''
''Answer the question!''
''Why would you be a worm!?''
''I don't know! Would you love me if I were a worm or not!?''
''For fuck's sake, bloody hell, yes I would!'' Grumbling, he returned to the last report. ''Fucking hell...''
''And would you...''
''YES, FOR FUCK'S SAKE''
7. Who likes forehead kisses? Who likes hand kisses? Who likes neck kisses?
Neck kisses: both of them, but Ghost prefers giving them and Riot prefers receiving them. The back of her nape and her inner wrists are very sensitive.
Forehead kisses: both of them, but Riot prefers giving them and Ghost likes both giving them and receiving them, when he's trying to sleep or they are cuddling and he has his head on her chest.
Hand kisses: No preference, except that her inner wrists are really sensitive and she starts trembling if he kisses her there. It's a good way to shut her up, that and the back of her neck
14. What is something they argue about constantly? Is it a deep-seated issue or something small?
They have a surprisingly healthy relationship, and rarely argue.
Christine steals his hoodies constantly, exchanging them when they loose his smell. Simon pretends to be annoyed but loves it. And because she is always cold, when they are out and about he tries to make her wear his coat or his jacket. That makes her angry, both because she's worried he'll be cold and because he complains about her stealing his hoodies and now he's giving her his jacket?? For fuck's sake
18. They've had a major blowout. How do they handle it?
Both of them are conflict avoidant, Christine more than Simon. If they had a strong argument, they'd avoid each other for a bit, to calm down. But it wouldn't be long until one seeks the other out. They can't be apart.
21. Who typically tends to initiate intimacy first (this can be a conversation, action or anything)?
Depends on the mood, but both of them are more about action. With a look they understand quickly, or a lingering touch, or a longer kiss while cuddling. The most they talk is a "Need you"
33. Which one of them gives "that look" when they other is acting like a fool?
Both of them had bombastic side eye, but they rarely use it with each other. Maybe Riot more towards Ghost than the other way round, believe or not. Ghost in reality is a big troll, but nobody would believe it coming from him, so he takes advantage of it. She usually sees through his shit
34. How do they address a problem in their relationship?
I can't think of any right now, but I'm thinking about the (far) future, when they have an 'accident' and she falls pregnant. Both of them will freak out for a while, trying to decide what to do, both of them are terrified of being like their parents (they are married by then btw). So, at first avoidance and agony, then sit down to talk and get to a decision together
35. How does each significant other view any exes and former relationships?
Both of them have problems with jealousy and possessiveness. Not the type to be angry about exes and such (but they better not be on sight). It's most an out of sight out of mind mindset. They don't think or talk about it
36. What is something that would break their hearts?
Cheating (they'd never, but it would destroy them). Opening up to each other, with all the fear, doubts, and time invested in trying to heal, only to be cheated on... yeah, nope. Never happening.
37. Who is more likely to avenge their S/O if they were hurt or killed?
Both. Both would go scorched earth, full murderhobo. Funny that you asked this one HEHEHEH *evil laugh*
45. What's the worst thing the other can say to one?
They'd never lol but in her case, something along the lines of shut up (with a bad tone) or you're annoying (she knows she is). In his case, he's been through so much verbal abuse in his childhood/teenhood that his skin is thicker, but coming from her (or Price, Johnny or Kyle) anything would hurt more than expected.
46. If they were ever in a life or death situation, who risks their life?
It'd be a downright fight between them, because both would sacrifice for the other. Sooo, quite better if they use their stubborness to get out of the fray together, safe and sound, I think.
47. If it ever came down to it, who is turning to the darkside to save the other?
I mean, none of them are strangers to murder. So, the line is there and has been crossed before. If push came to shove, they'd stop at nothing to save each other. That's the reason why Captain Price doesn't assign her as Ghost's Sergeant (that's Soap). I mean, Ghost would save Johnny in a heartbeat too, but it wouldn't be as raw and primal.
48. If they ever had less that 5 mins to tell their S/O something before never seeing them again, what would they say?
''Thank you''
49. Is there a word or gesture that makes either of them melt?
Simon will learn quickly that kisses (or just the brush of his nose) on the back of her neck make Christine fold quickly. Also, her inner wrists. She could be ranting about anything, but if he grabs her hand and kisses her inner wrist, or hugs her from behind and starts nuzzling the back of her neck, she becomes putty in his hands. (It also works if she's raging against anyone, but in those cases Ghost simply grabs her by the back of her neck, kitten like, and steers her away, she goes from RAGE to n_n in seconds)
In public, Simon doesn't have weaknesses (nor would Christine take advantage of them). If the need arises to appease him somehow, it's only Price who can talk him down. But in private? He melts when Christine runs her fingers through his hair, he's out like a light and snoring in minutes. For him it's incredibly relaxing, it's something his mother used to do to help him fall asleep when he was a kid. Another thing she does that makes him wobbly in his knees is when she starts kissin his scars, one by one. If sitting on his lap, she'll cup his face in her hands and start mapping them with her kisses, and it makes him feel so loved that he's putty in her hands. Of course if there's no clothes involved and her 'investigation' continues throughout his numerous scars he won't complain.
50. Who's the romantic?
Christine, definitely. She pretends not to, and some things considered romantic make her cringe, but she is quite the dreamer although it's a very secret, very deep part of her. Her love language is acts of service, so if in love, it evolves into learning what Simon likes and trying to keep stocked the tea he likes, the snacks he likes (or she'll just bake it, like custard), etc etc
Simon is more pragmatic, and a man, so he just... doesn't think about it. Sometimes the bulb will light up and he'll get her flowers, or tickets for some ballet she likes (either for her and Olga to go together, or he'll suffer through it if Nikolai gets involved). But although he is very considerate, and very sincere with his feelings, it's just not who he is.
63. How would they describe one another in bed?
Christine, about him: 'Heaven'
Simon, about her: 'Heaven'
65. Who tends to take the lead in intimate encounters?
Again, depends on the mood, but I'd say Ghost 60% Riot 40%. He's by nature more dominant (and she likes it), and both of them are touch starved (him for longer), but she is by nature a bit more bashful with these things. She's always worried about her stretch marks, her scars, her belly, her rolls, etc etc and he doesn't give a damn, he just wants to feel her skin against his, her heartbeat under his palm, her softness around him.
66. Have they ever been caught in the act? What would be their reaction if they were?
LMAO Christine would die. Simon would be flustered, but he gives less of a damn tbh. But she'd be terribly embarrassed (that doesn't mean the idea doesn't give them a bit of a thrill... but with the security of a locked door lol). But no, they havent been caught.
67. Have they ever done it anywhere questionable?
HEEEEHHHEHEHEHEHHEHEHEHEHEH. The 141 common room. Heather's office is off limits although sometimes they hide there to cuddle or nap. Price's office isn't off the cards, Ghost just needs to be pissed at him. Ghost's office has definitely been 'christened'. The sergeant's office is riskier because Soap, Gaz and Riot share it. The gym's showers late at night.
68. Who is more vocal? Who is more experienced?
Well, I guess this is about sexual experience, so Ghost would be more experienced. I'm always talking about consensual experiences! He's older, and before Roba he had his one night stands and brief flings, but nothing serious, he was too busy with his career and keeping his brother afloat. Riot is demisexual so unless there's an emotional connection no sex for her part, so, little experience.
About who's more vocal, I touch this more in the nsfw headcanons, but at first none of them think of themselves particularly vocal. She feels so embarrassed making sounds, he's just too focused on her, on hearing her. With time and trust, she discovers (to her horror and his delight) that she can be quite vocal, and he discovers (to his horror/amusement and her absolute delight) that if she's topping or going down on him, he becomes a right mess. Also, he swears a lot.
96. Who reads the newspaper? Who wants to see the cartoons?
Depends on the cartoons lol... if it's good anime, Christine is all over it. Might try to introduce him to it (he didn't partake much in nerd shit when he was a kid). So I guess he'd be the one with the newspaper.
98. Who would burn the world down for who?
Both, for each other. Down to ashes. No questions asked. They're stupid like that.
99. Who gives off "they said no pickles" energy?
Definitely Riot, lol. For herself she wouldn't complain, but for him? Full attittude. With good manners, but fire in her eyes. How dare they mess up his order.
Ghost tends to avoid ordering at places because he doesn't like speaking with people, so he leaves it to Price or whoever is with him. He's just there to carry the tray, so to speak. But God forbid someone makes her drink too hot for her to be able to drink it
100. Make a meme of this ship.

That Time We Took Over the World-Gamemakers (ao3)Â Summary: Being a session guitarist pays well, but Katniss Everdeenâs always wanted a taste of the spotlight. The B Word-Xerxia (ao3)Â Summary: From a Tumblr prompt 'I wish you would write a fic where ... katniss is like gordon ramsay in kitchen nightmares' (I've edited the prompt here for brevity) The First Smile-geekymoviemom (ao3)Â Summary: The first smile is such a sweet moment in baby's life. Suddenly everything you do for him seems worth it. The Fog-hutchabelle (ao3)Â Summary: The Capitol hijacked Peeta. Elo dozes in the car, tucked against Farren's side. When they arrive at his place, he carries her up the stairs to his condo. Elo doesn't have it in her to argue.
She sleeps some on his couch, surrounded by scents and noises that mean home and safety. Monday wakes her up to slurp down some water that tastes weirdly of bread and sugar, and gently helps her with a bowl of beef broth. She goes back to dozing to the low babble of conversation from her colleagues. Maybe an hour after they arrived, the doorbell goes. Yates places a placating hand on her shoulder when she starts awake. Farren allows entrance to a woman in a smart, starched white dress carrying a doctor's bag. She kneels in front of Elo, honey-brown hair pinned back and an easy smile on her pretty rosebud lips. "Hello, Detective. I'm Nurse Rowlands. Detective Breakwood asked me to stop by and check how you're doing. Would you lift your shirt please, so I can listen to your breathing?" "Anything for a pretty face," she says. The nurse rolls her eyes and proceeds to check Elo's vitals. When she's done, Farren, with arms crossed tight over his chest, asks, "So what's the prognosis?" "Her heart rate is a little higher than I'd like, but it's strong." Rowlands pulls out a clipboard and writes on it then passes it over to Monday, hovering next to Farren. "Check it again in two hours, and if it's still high, take her to the emergency room. Aside from that, just keep up her fluids, and with some rest, she'll be perfectly fine." "Fine enough to take you for a drink?" Elo asks. Rowlands laughs and pats her knee. "That's sweet, but no thank you." "You sure? I'm only here for another week." Rowlands laughs again and stands, collecting her bag. She gives Farren a meaningful glance. "No alcohol." He walks Rowlands to the door and gives her a peck on the cheek. "Thanks." "Take care," Rowlands says and is gone.
Elo feels noticeably perkier after the nurse's visit, so is less dozy when the telephone rings half an hour later. Cobbleskater gets to it first. "Hello?⌠Yes⌠Understood⌠She's recovering well⌠Of course⌠About 40 minutes, depending on traffic⌠A beige Buick Centurion, plate number RA7 5PY⌠Understood⌠Roger that." He hangs up. "That was the General's security team. They want us to take Elo over now." Elo uncurls herself for the corner of the sofa, her face drawn. Farren glances over but his empty eyes don't quite meet hers. "Alright, lads," says Monday, "Let's roll out."
âââ
They nose through the throng of people outside Strucker's house and the driveway gates are shut behind them. Elo stares at the big house. Most of the windows are dark. She thinks again about Strucker rattling around in there on his own. How the house will be filled with serious martial murmuring, instead of buoyant laughter. The door opens, letting in a rush of cold air. Before she can protest, Farren has scooped her up, carrying her towards the door. "My legs do work, you know." "Yeah, I know." "You can put me down anytime now." "Mmhm." Elo sighs and stops protesting. Besides, Farren is warm and the night is not.
Inside the house, Strucker is waiting for them. Farren lets her down, and Elo clasps Stucker in a rough hug. "Not gone to the noose," she whispers. "But still⌠A year goneâŚ" "Is nothing. Not nearly as bad as it could have been." They break apart, and Johan gruffly clears his throat. "The bed's made up. There's cold cuts, if you're hungry." Elo shakes her head. "The lads fed me. Besides, I've only got two strong needs right now. One is a tipple, the other is more sleep, and I'd prefer them in that order." "Nurse Rowlands said no booze," Farren says, frowning. "C'mon," Elo weedles. "Don't you think I deserve a little something after the day I've had." Strucker is already headed towards the den. Farren throws up his hands. "Fine. Just one."
The three of them enter the den; Monday is liaising with Strucker's security, and Yates and Cobbleskater are already bivouacking somewhere in the house, ready to take their turn at watching her door â an absolute necessity, apparently, despite the phalanx of other security measures in place. Strucker, taking up station behind the wet bar, pours them all a drink, and they clink glasses. "Here's to not going to the noose." "Here, here," the others echo. The liquor is sipped in a contemplative silence. Elo finishes her drink and puts a hand over her mouth to hide a yawn. Stucker's eyes twinkle. "Bedtime for you, I think." She makes an affirmative murmur. "All the other bollocks can wait until tomorrow." Strucker grins. "Eloquently said." Farren plucks the glass out of her hand and places it down. "Right, I'm cutting you off. Come on." "Yeah, yeah." Elo slides off the wet bar stool with some degree of grace, albeit in the lower numerals.
Farren helps her up the stairs and into her room. She flops down on the bed, slumping over on her side. "You gonna be okay?" he asks. Elo groans into the mattress. "I don't know. Doesn't matter. 'Feelings' come under the heading of 'other bollocks' and can wait until tomorrow. Brek, I love you, but bugger off would you? I need sleep." Farren snorts and starts helping her take her boots off. "Well, now I've seen everything. First, you let yourself be coddled and now you openly admit even you need rest. Next, the sky'll be filled with fire and ash, and the end times will be upon us." "Fuck off," she says with a tired laugh. "Fucking off, ma'am," Farren says, closing the door behind him.
âââ
She isn't sure how long she's slept before she's woken by the feeling of being watched. Elo lies still, staring into the dark. Could be her imagination. Could be Farren or one of the others checking on her. It doesn't feel like that though. She huffs a sigh and twists so she can look around the room. In the deep darkness of the corner at the foot of the bed are a pair of eyes, glowing like twin coals. She sits up. "Snotgrut?" "Kasskekadmas," he amends evenly. Elo groans and flops backwards, pulling the covers over her head. "Come back tomorrow," she says, voice muffled by the blankets. "I'm not in the mood for a fight." There is a noise, like cracking ice, that could be laughter. "Youse kin relax, AtneĹĄÄ, I ain't here for a fight." Elo pulls the covers back down and squints at the figure. "I came to keep me watch, as promised. Didn't mean to wake youse." "Snotgrutâ" "Kasskekadmas." "Kasskekadmas, what happened to your voice?" There is that crackling laugh again. "Finally noticed, did ya?" he says. "May as well ask what happened to the rest of me too." Snotgrut, who is apparently no longer just Snotgrut, stands and paces to the centre of the room. Against the haze of the wall, he looks taller. He makes a gesture towards the window. Clouds pull back from AukĹĄtasvilkas' silver eye so Elo can see him in the moon-blue slice through her curtains. Elo sits up, arms wrapped around her knees as she regards him.
He's definitely taller. His build is the same, still narrow and pointy. There's less of a potbelly, his ears have lost their point and his skin is smooth. It's hard to tell in the moonlight, but she thinks he's no longer green â maybe tan or olive. He's still wearing the scraps Cobbleskater found for him, a trilby and trench coat draped over the arm of the clothes chair in the corner. "What happened to you?" "Funny thing, eh?" From someplace, he pulls a cigarillo of all things â bent and crushed â and puts it in his mouth. "I was trottin' along, on me way to the liddle meet you called, when I got this pain in my chest. Right sharp, like I'd been stabbed or somesuch. So I'm there, near to keeling over cuz it hurts like buggery, when I sees that I'm in a puddle of moonlight. And that's not so strange, mebby, 'cept I think my eyes is playing tricks, cuz the damn thing's getting bigger⌠Here, doll, youse mind lighting me up?" He waves the cigarillo at her. "Sure," she says, although she's not sure she believes that she actually can. She lifts a finger, holding it towards the end of the cigarillo, and thinks about the baking sun, angled through a lens at a patch of punk. A flame, weak and stuttering, appears, enough for Snotgrut to get a draw. He takes a deep lungful, leaning back and letting the cloud out towards the ceiling. Elo pinches her flame out. "You were saying?" she prompts as he wanders back to the chair. "Yuh⌠So that puddle, it swallowed me up, see? And I got explained to me a thing or two about how the old Dvasia boss weren't no good and how I was gonna be the next, and⌠Well." He takes another long draw on the cigarillo. "Youse remember tellin' me how you burnt? And you asked if I ever felt anything like it, but with ice? Yeah, well, now I have, 'xactly like how you said." He takes another suck on the cigarillo. "So⌠Looks like I'm the boss now, eh?"
He looks lost, she thinks. Shell-shocked and confused. She wonders if this is something he ever wanted, ever even thought about. She wonders if he's had anyone to talk it over with, if he reached out for help from anyone. From the look on his face, they couldn't have been too helpful if he did. She thinks she should've looked for him, instead of waiting for the new Kasskekadmas to come to her. But until the trial, she'd relegated all this back to the land of make-believe. "Youse gonna say anything?" "Hmm." "More'n that I meant." "What do you want me to say â congratulations, commiserations?" Elo sighs tiredly. "Someone has to bear the light. If not us, then who?" She shakes her head. "We've got a lot of work to do, sure. A lot of things to set straight, a workaround for Drakemar's monkey wrenchâ" "Youse mean what the Dragon said?" "Yeah. The dragon." For a moment Elo feels pleased that she wasn't imagining it when she looked at the man and saw instead the echo of a giant, fire-breathing wyrm. "I've been thinking about that. And, well, youse know how to write Eshen. And that oldster, Aster â afore you came along they used to talk to Bonerot, so they kin translate anything you say into Dvasia for me." Elo's eyebrows raise. "You'd willingly go to an Eshen for help?" "Came to youse, didn't I?" Snotgrut crosses his arms and pouts. "We both know you didn't come to me for help." Elo grins. "You just accepted the coffee in the spirit it was given." He grumbles something. Elo gives another tired sigh. "A lot to figure out, for sure. But it can wait until I've had a full night's sleep, okay?" He squints as if only now realising she's dead tired. "Sure thing, doll. Don't let me keep ya." Snotgrut â because she cannot get used to calling him by a title made ugly by another â melts back into the shadows of the chair and starts to hum a soulful little tune that eases Elo back into the land of sleep.
