I saw Rebecca live for the first time in February in Vienna (it was also the first time I ever went to Vienna, and the famous Raimundtheater, and oh also I met Aris Sas sjögkslfpskdld), and I've tentatively been planning a new video titled something like "Rebecca review and retrospective" where I'd compare the book (which I've now read) to the famous 1939 film which I think has had a lot of influence on all further adaptations, and then look at what happened with the musical (it was thematically a bit wonky from the start - or rather, did away with the main themes of the book and replaced them with "a love that set me free" - but it got worse after they added stuff like Zauberhaft Natürlich lol).

I haven't watched a lot of different productions yet, so I should definitely do that if I plan to do a vid. (I love the original cast album, Uwe's Maxim is so interesting and pathetic - some people describe him and Wietske!Ich as two weirdos who fit together and I agree, they're amazing. Haven't seen videos of the original run yet but I plan to. And before seeing it live I'd only watched clips of the Stuttgart production, mostly Ich-related because she's my favourite character).

But idk, in general I think Maxim in the current production is extremely bland 🤣 Granted, I've heard that the understudies are better, but omg... Mark just doesn't seem to remember to act at all, he's just Some Guy. I only really liked him in one single line of hilf mir durch die nacht & then some of kein lächeln. But it really pales in comparison to previous portrayals. Idk if he's just tired of being trapped in the VBW machine or what ajflksöff. His voice is really nice but his performance as Maxim is generally so bland and generic... and it's so sad to see when the rest of the main cast and even actors portraying more minor characters are so good. Like, James Park as Frank Crawley has a lot more nuance than Markxim and he only has one solo song to himself!!!

But to return to the original topic - I don't think I can answer this yet, because I haven't watched all of Uwe or Jan Ammann (who I think are considered among the most influential Maxims - I'll have to do some research to find out which other prods are considered impactful), but I'd love to do a video about it! :D

tell me the first song that made you stan your current fave group and why did your faves attract you so much?

Um okay so I’ll go with explaining BTS and TXT I guess, haha. For BTS it was DNA! That was the first mv I ever saw by them and I was instantly obsessed with everything about it. For TXT, it was obviously Crown since I was keeping an eye on them as soon as BH announced a new group haha. But I initially loved the super bright and happy concept from Crown and they totally got me hooked by their personalities and other music!!

Honestly, I can’t think of anything other than spending more time with my roommate who I miss so so much.

I love teddy bears. I have two that I sleep with every night! One is a gift I got for preschool graduation (eloquently named Teddy) and the other is my iron man build a bear that my uncle bought me to cope with Endgame.

I am notoriously bad at answering this question so I’ll just say that at the moment I’ve been listening to Red Desert by 5sos a lot.

something that you’ve always wanted to learn?

I’ve always wanted to learn how to play drums and any language other than English haha

tell a funny story about yourself (or just something that you’ve witnessed)

This took way more digging in my mind than I would like to admit but when I saw 5sos live in 2016 my best friend and I had soundcheck, so we got to sit in the venue early and ask them questions and hear a few extra songs. At the time I had beef with Luke Hemmings (because the girl he was dating at the time was one of the most toxic people on earth) and he wouldn’t break up with her. So the girl sitting next to me at soundcheck raised her hand to ask Luke a question so of course he was looking basically right at me. We were like maybe 8 rows back from the stage and at this point in my life I had bright pink hair, so there was no missing me. So this girl is asking her innocent question, and naturally Luke looks around a bit and we make eye contact and instead of fangirling like a normal person, my anger at him boiled over and I ended up flipping him off. The whole band noticed and had to pretend they weren’t laughing at the oddly aggressive 9th grader who flipped off their lead singer. I still feel bad about it to this day lmao but all my friends think it’s hilarious and it’s definitely my go to party story.

The US education system has massive holes. I was lucky enough to attend a pretty good highschool and take good classes so I don’t feel like I was as robbed as other people, but there are curriculum gaps and misinformation everywhere you go. As far as college goes, I think it is wayyyy too expensive. Despite that, I still signed myself up for 8 years of debt so yes, I am a slave to the GPA. Gotta go hard for the dream job.

7. What talent do you wish you had?

I wish I could draw or paint well so bad. I am so envious of artists.

Top 10 Bachelor Moments Of The Decade

The Bachelor first aired in 2002. Feel old yet?

As another decade comes as goes, there have been very few lasting relationships to come out of The Bachelor franchise, but one stable face has always been there for us over the years...and dare I say that face has gotten better looking with time?

Do you know the “beginning of the decade/end of decade challenge”? I just found a clear winner:

As a self-proclaimed Bachelor expert whose opinion is always right, I wanted to share my top 10 Bachelor moments of the decade. (Disclaimer: the earliest season I watched this decade was Sean Lowe’s season. I somewhat know what happens on Emily Maynard and Ben Flajnik Courtney Robertson’s seasons, but outside of that, I don’t know much.)

Here are my top moments in descending order:

10. Tyler C.

No particular moment comes to mind. I just wanted to thank him for existing. He’s also the show’s most popular contestant ever and dated A-list supermodel GiGi Hadid. For those reasons, Tyler deserves a spot in Bachelor Hall of Fame.

9. Carly and Evan

A quick excerpt from a former blog post of mine:

They are BY FAR the cutest couple to come out of this show. And if you’re ever desperate to get someone to like you back, maybe try faking a sickness. You might end up marrying them and having two kids together. I’m not feeling so hot all of a sudden....

8. Des and Brooks break up

I’m happy that Des and Chris are still together to this day, but I still have ABSOLUTELY NO IDEA how they moved past Des telling Brooks he was the one and that she didn’t want to be with anyone else. And yet a week later, she got engaged. Anyway, it’s been several years, but Brooks could still get it. He’s my No. 1 Bachelor Nation crush.

7. Arie dumping Becca

“Dumping” doesn’t do this traumatic moment justice. Arie publicly crushed Becca’s soul only after he had Lauren lined up ready to be with him. It was arguably the most cringeworthy scene in Bachelor history. I will never get those 20 minutes back. And for that, the universe cursed Arie with an ugly baby. I said what I said.

6. Kaitlyn doing it with Nick, but choosing Shawn

This (^) is the moment Kaitlyn asked Nick if he wanted to go “hang out” in her hotel room after their date. This (^) is also Nick’s reaction. TO THIS DAY, I have absolutely no idea what she was thinking. She knew, he knew, we all knew she was going to pick Shawn. I actually don’t think she was thinking at all. I never understood how Shawn moved past this, but evidently he didn’t since they broke up three years later. And now Kaitlyn’s with Jason and they own two golden retrievers. 

5. Colton’s fence jump

I don’t think anything shook up Bachelor nation more than Colton’s fence jump. We counted down the days, we changed our Twitter names, we made countless memes. Sure, I’ve been shocked by other Bachelor events (the windmill, Blake porking countless Bachelor alum), but Colton jumping a massive fence and disappearing into the Portugese wilderness because Cassie dumped him just hits different. 

4. Same sex couple representation on Bachelor In Paradise

This is apparently controversial to some people because Kristian was not in the franchise prior to going on the show, but these people didn’t seem to have that problem when Ashley I’s sister went on Bachelor In Paradise. Considering the fact The Bachelor is a heterosexual show, how do they expect a queer relationship to appear out of thin air? Just say you’re homophobic and go. Phew, this got me heated. Even though Kristian and Demi didn’t work out, I am thankful they brought some representation to this show. It was long needed.

3. A Bachelorette finally going on Dancing With The Stars...and winning

Mike Fleiss, the creator of the show, was too busy being in a legal battle for allegedly beating up his wife to intervene with this. If he had it his way, no woman lead would ever go on DWTS. There has never been a female Bachelor lead go on Dancing With The Stars before. Meanwhile, the men have had Sean Lowe, Chris Soules, Nick Viall....even Grocery Store Joe. And the FIRST time we get a woman on, she wins. Another reason why women are superior to men. (P.S. Melissa Rycroft doesn’t count because she wasn’t a lead. And she won All Stars years later, further proving my point that women are superior.)

1. The First Black Bachelorette 

I freaking love Rachel Lindsay. And if you don’t love her, please know that you are just projecting your insecurities onto her. Rachel is smart, strong, confident, beautiful and educated. No other lead has been this well-rounded, but that’s how you have to be if you’re going to be the first black Bachelorette. Meanwhile, Ben Higgins was a 26-year-old salesman who led his season with puppydog eyes. Another reason Rachel was the best: she married Bryan about two years after they got engaged. Mrs. Abosolo doesn’t like to waste her time. And for that, I stan.

ok SO the song that probably got me into rv 100% (also yes ik this blog is 99% nct but rv is my forever fave no question) was probably ice cream cake!! i had been a casual listener of many groups up until that point and had never really stanned anyone, but icc was so infectious i found myself watching it over and over. i had heard happiness and be natural before but hadn’t really listened too closely, so icc was the song that captured me. after that, dumb dumb only cemented my love for them more, and the red is still one of my favorite kpop albums to date. rv attracted me primarily because of their incredible vocals and their versatility in genres and concepts. i still get so excited wondering what they’ll tackle next!! they’re just soooo unique and have one of, if not the best discographies of any group. i cannot stress enough, I. 1. what is your favorite song that’s been released during quarantine? ooooo honestly??? probably something off of Sawayama. literally every song bangs so hard i highly recommend that album to anyone!! i can’t pick a favorite off it but who’s gonna save you now is awesome and xs is just,,, chef’s kiss

2. what is your greatest mishap when you tried cooking? (or something you’ve witnessed) one time, while making soup at my late grandmother’s house on her like gas stove, i put a lid on a pot and somehow that led the pot to be engulfed in flames. IN MY DEFENSE i was like 7, and i’m great at cooking/baking now

3. what’s your go-to outfit or article of clothing? oh i love a nice dress. they can be casual or formal, and you look like you put effort into your outfit except i didn’t because i didn’t have to match anything yo!!!! also shorts have trouble fitting me cause i’m a weird body type so dresses tend to be very comfy for me

4. what is your comfort food? am i allowed to say like all food??? eating in itself is comforting,,, that sounds depressing but also i just like eating yummy food. i guess i’d say like my dad’s fried rice?? its my fave and no one makes it like him soooo

5. what singular moment in your life would you like to relive? i couldn’t tell if this meant like, a good moment you want to re-experience or go back in time and redo a moment and fix it. it’s kind of a hard question so i might cop out and go with a bit of a silly answer: i want to relive the hi touch with astro...... i wanna look at rocky’s beautiful eyes and touch moonbin’s hand ok,,,,

6. what is your favorite line and/or character from a movie, show, or book? i got a bunch but a few off the top of my head are genie lo (the epic crush of genie lo), ty lee, suki (atla), klaus, and ben (umbrella academy) 

7. if you could only choose one ice cream flavor and pizza topping/style for the rest of your life, what would it be? ice cream flavor: this very specific one from a local store that is banana ice cream with strawberries and oreo mixed in. it is heaaaavenly. as for pizza topping, i love a breakfast type pizza with an egg on top and like sausage and stuff!!!

8. what is the worst injury you’ve ever had or witnessed? funny enough, i’ve actually gotten badly injured quite a few times, and always on the face!! god hates me. the worst was probably when i hit a metal bench with my face and it took a chunk out of my cheek. i still have the scar! as for “witnessed” i accidentally broke a grown man’s rib once as a child, so i guess that would count.

9. would you rather explore the unknown of space or the bottom of the ocean? oceaaaan!! i answered this in some other game, but i like how mysterious and yet close the ocean is. like proximity wise it’s so near, yet there’s an insane amount we know nothing about. that’s so frightening but so intriguing

Important to note: I did not grow up with Star Wars. I didn’t see any of them until my junior year of college [bout two years ago], so I do not have the nostalgia of the old ones. I like them, just don’t have the same feelings as a lot of folks.

OKAY onto the discourse tinder:

KMT was phenomenal, her character is amazing, I love her

POE’S CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT!! We got a whole movie of him being a badass and now he finally learns oh shit!! consequences!! homeboy’s an aries probably

also GOD I love Finn’s character. Like yeah he’s a good guy but he puts his immediate friends over everything and I think that’s interesting. IDK if a lot of people picked up on that but I thought it was cool

putting all the old cronies in their seats. we literally burned the old world to the ground, this is New Content, it’s not gonna be like the old ones, get over it good L O R D

I LOVE MORALLY GRAY LUKE. I mean he obviously swayed towards good towards the end but GOD it was such an interesting dynamic. I imagine [and I’ve seen from some reviews] that this was a tough pill for the longtime fanboys to swallow

G O D Rey is my hero. She’s incredible. For me this movie really drove home how she’s done everything for herself her whole life, seen the worst of the world and still wants to find good in it without being a total pushover. I love it.

the twists!! i’m usually bad at catching twists, but there were so many moments where myself and others in the theater literally gasped, our hands over our mouths. I felt like I couldn’t trust anything and I LOVED IT

I enjoyed that Snoke just died. No fanfare, no burst of light, just...he die. That sounds sarcastic but it’s one hundred percent serious

I’ll talk more about Kylo/Ben later but G O D Daisy and Adam’s performances were captivating. I have to see this movie again over break just to really, REALLY appreciate it. They are both so incredible, I cannot give them enough props. Daisy especially makes Rey this character you can’t help but cheer for, even when you don’t agree with her choices [same with Kylo TBH]

I actually enjoy the Hux/Kylo dynamic now. I’m on the Ben Train [more on that later] but I think their interactions near the end of the film were very interesting. Would love to see it play out at least a little bit in Ep. Nine.

A friend of mine said this but Phasma is the new Boba Fett lets be honest. Cool design but little attention to her character.

Mark Hamill was amazing

Yoda came out of left field but I appreciated the scene, it felt like a nice nod to the older fanboys but also a nice nudge for them to move on

IT LOOKED STUNNING. The production design my guys. I especially loved the last planet [the icy salt one] and the casino planet. It’s a nice break from the dozens of ship interiors.

TBH I almost made an entire post just for Kylo, but here’s the essay: 

Okay now I’m gonna talk about Kyle Ron. I’m gonna be honest, I went into this movie cheering for his death. I even had a post about it queued up from someone else’s blog. 

Now, when I first saw TFA I didn’t HATE Kylo. Quite the opposite. I thought he was interesting: a bratty yet competent villain who wasn’t all powerful but still a threat [my all time pet peeve w/ superhero/sci-fi movies is the constant God Mode villain trope]. I didn’t excuse his actions, but I could see the motive behind it: being twisted at such a young age by someone so much more powerful than yourself sounded awful. He was a tad overbearing, but it only made sense for someone who was presumably raised pretty alone during his formative years [presumably. I don’t think Snoke is a sleepover kind of mom.] However, tumblr seemed determined to paint him as a misogynist creep, which I now believe was mainly to combat the Reylo ship [which I am not behind, for various reasons, but that’s besides the point]. So, I went into the movie like many others, bragging about how Kylo was a brat and I was excited for him to die or some shit.

But boy was I wrong. This movie took his weird motivations from TFA and turned them into something great. I struggled to try and hate him [the character, not as a person] but I just couldn’t. Luke’s reveal added another layer to him: he wasn’t just a foolish child lulled to the dark side by Snoke. He was a child who was probably terrified of this dark force, failed by the adult who was supposed to protect him: said adult then loomed over his bed in a killing pose - what else was he to think with that poisoning his mind? 

To clarify, and I’m only gonna say it once: explanation does not a justification make.

I think some people didn’t like their little skype sessions but I found them to be intriguing. They’re both great actors honestly, so watching them interact is a treat. The real treat though was their standoff with Snoke, however. I think some might see Rey going to Kylo as a bold move, but what other choice did she have? Anyway, I honestly did not expect Kylo to kill Snoke. I fully expected BB-8 to bust through the door, or Finn and Rose, or for Rey to overpower Kylo. To see him literally murder Snoke and then fight BACK TO BACK with Rey blew me out of the water. Their following conversation with Kylo begging her to come with him almost brought me to tears. He’s lost everything he’s worked for, realized how useless it all was, and just sounds scared.

I also like how, at the end of the film, Kylo’s motivations are different, but his end goal is the same. Before, he wanted to destroy his past because it tied him to the light. Now, imo, he wants to destroy it to get rid of everything left: everything that reminds him of all the mistakes he made. [Side note: Luke was a tad bit of a douche in their final showdown, ngl. But so was Kylo with the killing and shit].

I honestly did not expect them to take his character arc anywhere interesting. I am so excited to possibly see him come back to the light, I really really want him to. I feel like all this effort would be wasted, otherwise.

TL;DR: I’m a Kylo stan now, sorry about it.

Name: Starts with a “J” :D Nickname: J Gender: cisfemale Star Sign: Aries Height: 5'8" Sexual Orientation: Bisexual, although starting to wonder if I’m more demisexual and bi-romantic.  Hogwarts House: Gryffindor, much to my disgust. It’s so cliche. Favorite Color: All shades of turquoise.   Favorite Animal: Cats, horses, wolves, sharks (because all of them are cool). I find most animals fascinating.  Current Time: 7.21PM Cats or Dogs: Cats, mostly because my overprotective father made me terrified of dogs at a very young age, despite the fact that he grew up with and loved both. Dads, sheesh. Favorite Fictional Character: argh, that’s hard, I have too many! Gunnery Sergeant Torin Kerr from Tanya Huff’s Confederation of Valor series and Paksenarrion from Elizabeth Moon’s The Deed of Paskenarrion. Both of them are badass.   Number of Blankets you Sleep with: Well, it’s winter here in Canada, so I have my down duvet on the bed right now. In the spring and autumn, I usually have at least 2 of varying degrees of warmth so I can throw them on or off as necessary.  Favorite Singer/Band: Hard question. I listen to a lot of classical and folk music, so favourites include: Chopin, Rachmaninov, Yo Yo Ma, Cecilia Bartolli, Ben Heppner, Schooner Fare, and Stan Rogers. Dream Trip: Almost anywhere really. I’d like to get to Scotland at some point and I’d love to go back to Wales and to Italy. Dream Job: A writer, actually. I’m quite good at it but I’m just not good at writing fiction. I can’t keep a plot line going but writing for work? No problem. When this blog was created: Autumn of 2016, I think. When this blog hits its peak: It would be pretty sad if that had happened already! Why did you make this blog: To keep up with some of my favourite people/authors. Although now I’m following so many people that I feel like I’m achieving the opposite really. Why Did you Choose your URL: Well, my nickname is “J” and for some reason I was thinking of Judy Dench, who happens to be a Dame, so I linked the two together! :D
