End of the Year Survey Summary

Thank you all for all of you who left feedback this year! We’ve had the chance to look through your comments and, with the help of our new volunteer team, have distilled them into some actionable items. Now a community survey is nothing without the community, so here we’ll provide a summary of some responses, hint at some plans for the future, and share your best moments!

Full details under the cut, but in short: One new rec list focused event, many returning events, and look out for a quarterly theme coming near the end of the year.

007 Fest and WIP Wednesday are always at the top of the favorite events list, but it was nice to see some newer events were in the top five as well, like Remix and our Halloween commenting challenge. Both of which we plan on doing again this year.

There wasn’t really a huge consensus on whether you all prefer themes or prompts, so that won’t be changing much. We will keep sprinkling in specific prompt lists throughout the year, but some months will just have a broader theme for you to draw inspiration from.

A few people suggested doing more to encourage rec lists, and we are trialing a new event: Weekend Wonders. Once a month we will give a theme/trope/character and ask that you suggest one fanwork in which it features. We will then do a round-up post of all the recommendations at the end of the weekend. You can see the January one here.

It’s been some time since we had writing workshops and there’s been some requests for these again. We are working on trying to develop something with a simpler format so that it’s easier to host. If you want to help with this, please reach out and let us know!

There’s also some interest in creating a zine, but your mods know nothing of this. If any of you do and would be willing to create a community document of what it involves, please do and share it with us!

Saturday Cafes have been much quieter lately, but we now have a set of prompt questions pinned to the writer’s corner slack channel for anyone to answer and hopefully spark some more discussion with whoever else is around and writing.

We tried doing a year-long theme of Characters of Bond last year and it... well, middling success. You seemed to like the idea even though we sometimes forgot to promote it and many of you were busy. Someone suggested quarterly themes and we really like this idea. We likely won’t start until the end year, but we loved the idea!

You all said you do enjoy our creatively named months even if there’s not a specific prompt to go with it. Which is good, cause we enjoy coming up with silly alliterations. Those won’t be going anywhere.

Do you have a fun fandom moment/highlight from this year to share?

Definitely Mac making her entry in the 00Q fandom! I’m not an avid fic reader but her work is always so on point I have a hard time not seeing 00Q through her lens anymore.

Getting kidnapped during Fest was pretty cool!Honestly the slack in general has been fun. It's hard to have a place to feel safe in fandom these days.

I absolutely loved Remix! It was such a fun challenge and I loved seeing how my own work was remixed.

During Fest, Team 00 had a spreadsheet for contributions (like lyrics to be inspired by, photos, etc). The absolute chaos as we discovered only two of us knew how to use a spreadsheet was AMAZING (and hilarious).

I loved interacting with the authors and getting to know them through their writing and ongoing works and prompts.

Fest was awesome.

This year was a blast. I worked on 4 longish 00q fics (two of which were based on MI6 Cafe themes). My collaboration with Anya for Harry Potter and the Fucking Audacity was possibly the most fun (and also stressful because it was unplanned and I had other things to work on), but I also enjoyed writing my crossover AU and my NTTD fix it. Basically, toward the end of last year I was worried that I was running out of stories in this fandom, and the themes MI6 Cafe supplied definitely spurred new ideas that kept me excited and creative... even if I only used one or two of them in the year, they kept me busy much of the year. And Fest is always fun, but I particularly enjoyed this year. Seriously love you guys! I feel so fortunate that you maintain this wonderful fandom community and space that feels safe and I can contribute to, but that will survive without me when I get too busy with RL (or FTH) to participate much. Thank you!

I’ve enjoyed the fandom since joining, thanks for the work you do and spaces you keep!

Fest is usually a delight

I very much enjoyed the 007 fun Fest and being able to participate in the smaller, less time consuming challenges. It was the first time I had done something like this and my personal highlight was being able to come up with my very own 4 line poem in a bid to rescue the fic author from the villains team :D

For me it was just joining the fandom. I joined around the start of summer this year and it has been a blast so far. I don't engage in fandom spaces often and to join one that is so supportive and chill in its own way is definitely a highlight.

appreciate everything mods have done! This was a fun year.

Oh goodness: Fest. It was amazing! LOVE all the creativity! And it seems like it created a momentum throughout the year.

There have been so many moments for me, as a new member of the fandom, to be bowled over by the sheer talent and incredible camaraderie. Thank you, thank you, for the welcome and the amazing creative community!

Today’s birthday shout-out goes to @lumosatnight, featuring a nameplate and a rec list! I am so glad I’ve gotten to know Lani this year, since they are doing so much for fandom right now. We started talking through the rare pairs server, and we were also trying to figure out all things Discord server-related (because technology, building things and maintaining things are hard tasks). Lani is full of passion about the things they love, and they are very determined to learn and get things done. They are also an amazing writer! Their humour and dialogue between characters are so fun to read. While each ship Lani writes for has such a different dynamic, you can still see their style in between those words. Not only does Lani write Drarry, but they also advocate for rare pairs and wlw! Speaking of wlw, Lani’s energy for our favourite wlw couples is so infectious that they created and currently mod the @hpsaffics server! I’m so glad this community exists now because it’s definitely what fandom needs so we can talk about all the ladies we love. If it wasn’t obvious, Lani is always full of brilliant ideas. It’s because of Lani that @microficmay became a thing. This challenge was my first time interacting and writing with microfics to begin with. It was a pleasure to be a co-mod and to see this challenge flourish overnight (literally)! I have Lani to thank for sharing their love of flash writing, and getting me hooked on writing microfics too. I’m glad so many others also participated in the challenge to share that love too. If Lani wasn’t doing enough organising and modding already, they also co-mod for @hp-soulmates , which is currently open for claiming until July 15th. Definitely a fest to check out and follow! In general, Lani is such a kind soul. They’re great to talk and collab with, and they’re very caring. When I was going through a rough patch last month, Lani reached out to me and made me feel seen (because we’re all human, and we need to be reminded that life isn’t complete shite). I love that they try to see the positive perspectives for everything, because that’s definitely what we need more of nowadays. If you’re looking for new recs, here are my favourite Lani fics to check out: >> What is this, fucking Jeopardy? (Drarry, E, 20.5k) Summary: Draco is struck by a wayward curse of unknown origin and keeps trying to get Curse-Breaker Potter to help him. It’s rather frustrating that he seems to be so busy… and that Draco can only speak to him in questions. Draco’s at his wit’s end trying to get oblivious Potter to realise why he’s bothering him, and Harry won’t stop making obscure Muggle references. Like the last time, when he just stared at Draco before yelling “What is this, fucking Jeopardy?!” before walking away. OMG! This has been on my TBR for a while, and I am so glad I was able to finally read this. If you want some humour, terrible flirting and awkwardness and banter, this fic has you covered. The Ministry acronyms are hilarious, Draco asks a lot of questions, Harry is clueless as hell, and gods Harry and Draco are classic idiots in love. I’m glad they finally figure things out. They’re both so precious in their own way. Bless these two. XD >> White, the colour of flowers (Drarry, M, 3.2k, mind the tags) Summary: The first ending of our story goes like this. Draco is anxious, overwhelmed, and scared of his own shadow. He does not tell anyone about the flowers. The flowers tearing his lungs to shreds, the vines climbing up his throat, the heart that beats wildly in his chest whenever a certain Gryffindor sneers at him in the halls. Draco tells no one, and that is his first mistake. I’m a huge sucker for Hanahaki fics, and I love this fic because of how poetic it is (and it happens this was gifted to me). The narrative flows as smooth as water, and there are a few ways things could have gone for Harry and Draco (think of it as a choose your own adventure format). There’s just the right amount of hurt and angst, but things look hopeful for the future. >> Scalene (Luna/Pansy/Ginny, M, 11.8k) Summary: Harry has a house; Pansy needs a place to stay. It’s a match made in burning hell that only gets hotter when Pansy encounters her new roommates: the strangely intelligent Luna Lovegood and the intriguingly provocative Ginny Weasley. And that’s only the beginning! Throw in a giant snow leopard, yoga in the hallway, and an electric guitar. Welcome to Grimmauld Place! This fic is so fun! I love the utter chaos of Grimmauld Place, the little details of what people are up to, how they’ve changed, and how they all end up becoming one big family in a way. And the dynamic Ginny and Luna have with Pansy is exactly how I imagined. Slowly, ever so slowly, Pansy lets her fears go and gives into what (or who) she wants. Ginny is fiery, Luna is intuitive, and Pansy is a brat who eventually grows up, gets her crap together and lets the pieces of her life finally fall into place. >> Your Cigarette Smell (Sirius/Narcissa, E, 9.7k, Blackcest- mind the tags) Summary: It’s easy, she thinks. Falling into each other while their family falls apart. Lips connecting while other connections fizzle away. Losing themselves to pleasure while the rest of the world grows lost to war. Bodies sliding together as months slide by. Wow, okay. I will occasionally dip my toes into the ship, and I’m always surprised by how well it works for Sirius and Narcissa to love and hate everything and each other at the same time. Add in Pureblood values and expectations, and things gets complicated fast (which obviously makes this a good angsty read). I love how this fic is non-linear too because everything about their relationship is revealed over time. What they currently have isn’t what they want, and what they want is what they can’t have. And the way this is perfectly slotted into the canon timeline...yes. Make sure to read more of Lani’s work, and don’t forget to pass on the love for their great contributions to fandom. Lani, thanks for being an awesome human, and I hope you have a lovely day!

This Time // When Harry shows up at Liam door, upset that his relationship has ended, Liam finally gets his chance to act on the crush he's harbored for ages.

An Advanced Position // Harry struggles to fuck Louis against a wall.

Behind those Fire Eyes // Liam’s messy xo scrawled on one of the discs called out to him. He carefully slid it out and put it in one of the three CD slots, and hit play with a smirk.Liam had been unbearably proud of this mix. Rightfully so, Zayn could admit with just a hint of jealousy. It was made with a very specific purpose in mind, and it was, Zayn realized, swallowing thickly as his cock kicked in interest, very effective.

Work you are most proud of (and why): Quite honestly, I am incredibly proud of myself for actually finishing 5 fics this year. I was on the struggle bus most of the year, and had so many good intentions that just didn’t come to fruition, that these five fics are filling me with a lot of pride at the moment. Many, if I had to pick one, I’d say An Advanced Position because I had meant to write the concept in 2020, so at least I finally got around to writing this year!

Work you are least proud of (and why): sobs in regret at all the fics living in my head that didn’t make it to even a draft form. pours one out to the rest of the wordplay prompts. waves fondly at the motorboatrry fest.

A favorite excerpt of your writing: I still get such a kick of out the line, “Harry’s cheeks turned a lovely shade of pink, even at that most obvious of compliments.” in a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends. Like, Harry my pal, this is not the time to be bashful, but I think it says so much about that Harry in the fic.

Share or describe a favorite review you received: oh jeeze. literally all of them? I wrote an open-ended angsty, lirry fic, a drabble, a bad at sex larry, a wistful ziam, and a kidnapped harry. everyone who came along for the ride this year, and then wrote some kind words, you’re the best people on the planet.

A time when writing was really, really hard: all.fucking.year.

A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: my (surprise! spoiler!) evil Louis in a lot of pretty, pretty boys she calls friends kind of came out of nowhere. It was originally going to be Louis actually saving H, but then as I was writing I was like, orrrrrrr what if H doesn’t actually get saved!!! and then i liked the (apparently) subtle realization that Louis was also up to no good.

How did you grow as a writer this year: the @1darkandstormy fest was awesome because I really wanted to challenge myself to lean into the purple prose aspect of it, since that’s not normally how I write. Getting it to the minimum word count was something I wasn’t sure I was going to be able to accomplish at some point in the writing process, so I was thrilled I got there in the end!

How do you hope to grow next year: I would LOVE to actually plan out, write, edit, and have ready an advent fic next year. The level of advanced planning needed!!! Let’s see if I can make some goals and follow through on them!

Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): all of the amazing mods of all the great fests this year!!!!! Like, all of this terribleness is going on and you’re rounding up the troops to provide a+ content!!!! I love you! Thank you for the inspiration!

Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: hm. yes. I did have an ‘ex’ who made me a sexytimes CD. And I have made terrible choices sleeping with people who I maybe shouldn’t. annnnnnnd I think specifically, that’s it, BUT I think there was a very strong correlation between my general mood this year and the content that I ended up writing, so also a huge yes.

Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: If you are also in dark times, even if you can get one single fic out, you should try because it’s worth it. And if you can’t, that’s okay too. Maybe next week or next month or next year that writing mojo will come back and we’ll be waiting and excited to read it whenever you’re ready to write it.

Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: YES! I am SO EXCITED for my @harryrarepairfest fic that I seriously need to start working on.

Hi everyone! We wanted to update you on this fest's status and keep as transparent as possible. We know we’ve been silent the past few weeks and that’s because all the mods were discussing what the best next steps would be. Sadly, we've decided not to continue with this year's round. It was a very hard decision to make but unfortunately, not many people were able to sign-up during our sign-up period and our main mod has been experiencing some family issues rendering them unable to participate. As mods, we felt we didn't have the resources to continue holding this fest to the standard we would like and to properly support every author and beta.

We know this news may be upsetting, as some of you have been looking forward to the fics that would have come this year, but we have given the writers permission to post their fics separately if they wish to do so and you are more than welcome to use this year's prompts for your fics, as long as you follow the same etiquette you would expect if you were to choose from a different fic fest’s past prompts.

We do still plan to hold another round next year, but it felt inappropriate to continue this year and we hope you can understand our reasoning.

Whilst we were super excited for this fest and we’ve been lucky enough to receive so much support, we know that next year we’ll be able to come back much stronger. We’ve already started planning for next year, but in the meantime, if anyone has any questions please feel free to ask!

We also wanted to give a HUGE thank you to our brilliant writers who have done such an amazing job, if they choose to release their fics we know you will love them!

Once again, thank you so much for all your support we are so grateful and we’re looking forward to seeing you all again next year 😊

And there, carved in every black line, draped and shaped around him like rivers of time. His life. His heart, the present and the past, made up of all the sum of his parts. For his body was his canvas, and the ink was his paint, and he drew a story over each and every scar that remained.

Or: Harry Potter is a tattoo artist, and Draco Malfoy is always running away. This is a story about healing the deepest of scars through ink, and the warm touch of a lover's hand.

I am so, so, so excited to finally talk about this little creation! So firstly—yes, it's the one with the terribly obnoxious title. Apologies to the Make It Musical mods for having to deal with this long title. It's quite the mouthful, but well, you might as well go big or go home. Besides, what other title could possibly accompany a 4k word rhyming monster?

When I tell you that this fic took over my life while writing, it is 100% not an exaggeration. For weeks I couldn't properly read other fics without identifying every single rhyme, and reading absolutely everything with a weird poetic cadence that was stuck in my head.

I'm overjoyed that I can finally scream about how much I'm in love with this artwork. @kryskrosszee thank you endlessly for your amazing hard work, I'm just in awe of your talent. Just look at it, isn't it beautiful? I'm still pinching myself that I can actually say that one of my works has an artwork attached to it. The artwork is beyond gorgeous. Please go support all their art and give them all the love they deserve!

While this fic was quite the difficult task—lots of hairpulling and hours combing through rhymezone, I feel like the end result was so undeniably worth it. I couldn't have done it without the help of some truly phenomenal people. @opalesqueopioid @softlystarstruck @charlie9646 @kryskrosszee. All these wonderful people helped me put this vision together, so thank you to my alpha and betas for being a part of this.

Hadestown is one of my all time favourite musicals, so seeing this prompt was a match made in heaven. So if you don't know anything about Hadestown, the least you can do is listen to the beautiful song this fic is inspired by All I've Ever Known

Lastly, a huge thank you to @hp-make-it-musical-fest for putting so much time, love and energy into creating and managing this fest. I had an amazing time participating, and every single work is outstanding.

Summary: Harry Potter arrives on a Friday afternoon.

The sun is shining outside, and the Hogwarts grounds are covered in purple and white crocuses; the first yellow daffodils peeking timidly from behind the trees.

Spring is beautiful this year, Draco thinks, and yet, there’s a dark grey cloud, rumbling ominously and leaving a big puddle right in the middle of the staffroom.

The cloud appears to be right above Harry Potter’s head.

Okay, I genuinely feel so utterly spoilt, but also still in disbelief that @pato-roldnart decided to do this collab with me for @hpdrizzle and that they did not one, but TWO amazing pieces for it (please have a look at their stunning art post).

5 favorites of 2020

I was tagged by @kingsofeverything & @disgruntledkittenface Thanks Lauren and Maggie!!!

RULES: it’s time to love yourselves! choose your 5 (ish) favorite works you created in the past year (fics, art, edits, etc.) and link them below to reflect on the amazing things you brought into the world in 2020. tag as many writers/artists/etc. as you want (fan or original) so we can spread the love and link each other to awesome work.

1. Until (series) - Ohhh this fic. I feel like this fic came along and saved me this year. I actually intended to write the prompt this came from (well an irl situation that @jaerie got herself into actually lol) last year and it was going to be short. But when I went to write it, all these other ideas popped up, so I shelved it and decided to write it for Big Bang. I was concerned about getting 25k out of hahahahahahahaha This series clocks in at almost 62k. My main goal was just to get to write about cowboys lol, but then it turned into a fic about finding your place in the world and how the concept of home looks different for different people. I didn’t know where to set the fic, but then a friend @big-sue suggested this area of Colorado and it just really fell into place then. I could just see it all happening once I had the location. And I just grew to love these characters so much. The side pairing of Niall/Shawn Mendes felt like it’s own side story, which I then turned into the second part of the series. These characters comforted me when I needed comfort, and as you’ll see I’m a sucker for my friends, so I wrote a third part...a wedding time stamp for @nouies who mentioned she’d like to read it. This series was an escape for me this year, and I just hoped that it could bring a little bit of comfort or escape for anyone who read it.

2. When You Know - I do this thing where I feel a need to challenge myself to write things I’ve never written before, so at the beginning of the year when my friend Laura came to me with a prompt, I decided it was just what I needed. The prompt was simple: assassin Louis and cupcake Harry. So there was a lot of room to do what I wanted with it. I’m actually really proud of how it turned out. I set out to create a certain mood with the fic, which is something I’ve been trying to work on in my writing. And I really feel like I captured just what I wanted with it.

3. Interview with the vampire - I am a huge fan of reading rare pairs, but the only rare pair I’d written before this one was Tomlinshaw. So I decided to sign up for the Louis and Men Fest and try out a different pairing. Well, I originally was going to write Louis+Cillian Murphy, but then my friend @outropeace asked for Louis+Rob Pattinson after Rob had that absurdly delightful interview with GQ. So I somehow ended up making it a/b/o and used the interview as part of it and included a plot twist. It feels like a fever dream tbh. lol. But I think I really captured Rob’s chaotic personality, so I’m pretty damn proud of it. Also, I was shocked that people actually read this, the rarest of rare pairs (it’s literally the only one in the pairing). a;lsdkfj I had low expectations for its reception, but surprisingly, some people actually read it! It has better stats than some of the other rare pair fics I wrote this year lol.

4. Over - Are you sensing a theme wherein I am weak for my friends and I write their prompts? lol. This is another one that Laura prompted me to write. I wrote this for the 1d Breakup Fest and it’s based on a viral tweet, but I changed it from strangers to lovers into exes to lovers to fit the fest. I put all my favorite things to write in this fic...exes, pining, sexual tension. And the thing I discovered while writing this was that I don’t dread writing smut anymore. I have been forcing myself to practice writing it for years, and I finally reached the point where it’s no longer hard to write. I’ve gone back to reread that part of the fic because of a few comments people had made about that part, and I realized that I’d managed to do what I always wanted to do...write smut that felt emotional and relevant to the story. And I was like, hey I did it! lol (Only took me 83 fics to get there a;lsjdkfd)

5. Hesitate - So I had finished writing for the breakup fest, and as a mod, I realized there were no rare pairs in the fest. So I decided to write a second fic for the fest (and convince @taggiecb to write one too lol) but this time a Lilo one. So I let it simmer in my mind for about a week and then sat down and wrote this pretty much right from my head, which just never happens. The whole story just spilled out of me and I just knew exactly the dynamic I wanted between them, which later I realized was probably due to long talks with @magicalrocketships about Louis. LOL. But it’s fine because she was my target audience anyway. Writing this felt so joyful, so it’s one of my favs.

Title: Molluscs for Breakfast Recipient: @clea2011 Rating: Mature Pairings: Arthur Pendragon / Merlin Word Count: 18.8K Content Notes/Warnings: tw for food mentions, some of them unmentionable (Merlin is a human dustbin) Summary: An uptight, out of work, disinherited clotpole and an overworked, stressed junior doctor are two things that should never be put together. Just like chocolate wafers and mayonnaise, or blackcurrant and egg, or molluscs with breakfast, or marmite and… anything. But sometimes things that shouldn’t work just sort of... do. Or, How does Santa like his pizza? The answer, of course, is deep and crisp and even. It is absolutely not with banana and pickled onions, no matter what Merlin thinks. The 12 Days of Sherlolly are back!

Welcome to The 12 Days of Sherlolly. From December 26th to January 6th, we will be showcasing your winter or Christmas themed Sherlolly fic and art.

Will our favorite couple cuddle together in front of a roaring fire at 221B? Are there snowball fights in Mummy and Daddy Holmes’ garden? Will someone be visited by the Ghost of Christmas Future?

Has someone stepped under the mistletoe? An unexpected blizzard? Cuddling to stay warm? Silly, sweet, or smutty—the Fest is open to it all.

Works can be any rating, any length, any genre, and any medium (art, fic, knitted dolls, videos, etc). However, they must be a Sherlolly work with a Christmas or winter theme.

We will open posting on the 12 Days of Sherlolly collection at Ao3 on December 26th and close it at midnight on January 6th. Authors/artists will be welcome to post their works to the community at any time while it is open. Any works added to the collection will also be shared and featured on the @holidaysat221b tumblr during that period.

Please make note of the change to Rule #6 below. It’s a huge change from years past.

The Rules:

1) Must be on theme in some way—Winter, Christmas season, any winter holiday

2) Sherlolly must be the main pairing (it does not need to be a romantic pairing), but other ships are welcomed.

3) The collection can be found at http://archiveofourown.org/collections/Twelve_Days_Of_Sherlolly_2020. Please note that this is a subcollection.

4) To add your work to the Ao3 collection: Post your fic to Ao3 as you normally would, but in the “Post to Collections / Challenges” box you need to type Twelve_Days_Of_Sherlolly_2020.

5) Multi-chapter fics are welcome to post over a period of days. It would be lovely if your fic could be complete by January 6th, but we are aware that things don’t always go according to plan.

6) Any fic/art that began posting sometime between December 26th, 2019 and midnight on January 6th, 2020 is eligible for inclusion in this collection. Let’s do something new for our final year – Any fic that meets the other requirements will be eligible for inclusion or reblogging. Regardless of when you originally posted it. If you wrote a winter snowball fight fic in June (for example), and would like to have it featured in this year's 12 Days of Sherlolly, feel free to add it to the collection. Have a fluffy proposal under the Chrismas tree picture from six years ago, we’d love to see it. Already on the list from years past? We can showcase it again if you’d like.

7) Tag your ships. Improperly tagged fics may be deleted.

8) If you want to post your work on Tumblr, please tag it with ‘12 days of sherlolly’ and/or ‘2020 12 days of sherlolly’ somewhere in the first five tags.

My 2021 Fic Fests

Thank you @cyantific and @chloehl10 for tagging me to share the fic fests I was part of in 2021! I'm not a huge fest participant, mainly because I don't like signing up for things I might not be able to complete and I don't like pressure, but I did a couple!

Number of fests: 2

Number of fics written: 3

Favourite fest/fic: I only did 1D Trick or Treat Fest and the 1D Christmas fest, but I loved that in both I was able to decide to join in late on (Trick or Treat with no sign-ups and Christmas with the late call for more stories), which really suits me and my writing system (i.e., there is no system. Whatever comes out comes out, whenever it wants). I also like all the stories I wrote in different ways. If I had to pick one, I’d say Little Saint Nick, because it was barely a spark of an idea and then it snowballed (heh) as I sat down to try it out.

Fests you would love to do again this year (if they come back!): I’d do both of these again! The Trick or Treat fest is a great writing exercise with the 666 word limit, and who doesn’t love a Christmassy fic? I’ve also signed up for big bang, and I'd love to do the poly fic fest but I don’t think I’m going to make the Jan 30th deadline as I really should concentrate on the BB at this point… Wordplay last year looked fun as well. HOWEVER I have a list as long as my arm of projects I’m writing/want to write, so I do like if I can use something in-progress to fit the fest instead of following prompts and ending up with even more WIPs.

@cyantific added in Fic Fest you wish existed and I love that idea - although I note they're hoping to run their fest and I don’t have the capacity at this point to take on something like that! Fic fest mods are heroes. However, I would love more fests that focus on non-Larry. I love Larry, don’t get me wrong (my BB will be Larry!), but I think people need less encouragement for Larry fics, with their guaranteed readership. As a rare pair reader, rare pair-focused stories are also harder to find (unless you use ‘otp: true’ on AO3, or exclude all the Larry fics - but that’s almost useless for Ziam given how often Ziam and Larry go hand in hand) so a collection is like hitting jackpot. My personal favourites are Lilo, Tomlinshaw and Nouis, because I’m a Louis girl, so any of those three… well, I’d certainly consider selling my soul even if I didn’t go through with it.

My contribution to fests in 2021: (In chronological order)

1. 1D Trick or Treat fest - Ghostbesties (Zayn and Louis) @1dtrickortreatfest

I had this idea kicking around and when I saw the fest it was the perfect excuse to finish it and keep it concise! It took a lot of revision to stick to 666 words but it was really interesting to work within such a constraint. And the reception to fics in this fest was amazing, even for my little gen fic. So many comments and kudos! I love.

2. 1D Christmas Fest - A Kiss for Christmas (Lilo) @1dchristmasfest

I saw the late call for stories for this fest and figured I’d give writing something short and sweet a go, and this was the result. It’s a weird mix of Louis’ vaguely horny internal monologue, childhood toys, and Liam as the son of Father Christmas. I don’t know. I don’t know where it came from but I honestly love it. Also I think(?) there were four non-Larry main pairings in this fest, and I wrote two of them, so happy to help with that variety :D

3. 1D Christmas Fest - Little Saint Nick (Tomlinshaw) @1dchristmasfest

I kind of didn’t mean to write this (I wasn’t even sure if the fest accepted multiple stories by the same author at the time) but a tiny half idea became this whole big thing (nearly 11k! That wasn’t the plan!) when I sat down and figured I’d give it half an hour to see if it had legs. It has canon Nick but AU Louis, supernatural elements and touches on some darker themes, and writing it was a real adventure. And I just realised they end up talking about sheep again, like they do in one of my other Tomlinshaw fics… why do I associate Tomlinshaw with sheep?!?

An absolutely huge thank you to everyone who organised a fest last year for encouraging the production of so many great stories! As a writer, I loved dipping my toe into fests, and as a reader I threw myself in wholeheartedly, so thank you for the hours of entertainment.

I feel like I’m getting to this a bit late, so probably most people have been tagged? If not, consider this yours!

In September 2020, I joined my first ever fest - @gameofdrarry Wizards Hearts. The goal was simple: Read and comment on 52 fics as per the tropes and celebrate our lovely authors!

Every single fic was brilliant! I’m in awe of the talent in the fandom!!💛

I'm so excited that I managed to complete my deck :)… here’s a peek into how it went.

1. What was the first fic you read for the game/fest? Why did you choose it? - I think the first fic I read and commented on for the fest was Puppy Breath and Money by GeorgeOaks. It’s an ABO fic. I find this genre interesting especially when handled respectfully (and it was done so well in this fic). I had just started this fic when I joined Wizards Hearts and it fit into the ABO trope so well.

2. What was the last fic you read for the game/fest? How did it feel reading 52+ fics? - The last fic i read was I love you (2) by curlee_cue. It was for the Dark fic trope. I had some trouble finding a good, suitable fic which is why I left this one for last but what a brilliant and chilling story it was! Reading 52 fics was a wild ride! At one point in December i was worried i wouldn't manage to complete the deck...but I’m glad i did :)

3. What was your strategy for choosing fic/tropes for your reading list? Was there a fic/trope you found you simply couldn’t resist? - My strategy changed every few weeks haha. I started off with tropes I loved and quick short fics. Then I realized I had time and I should look for long fics that would meet all the suit criteria (rake in all the points). I also left out a couple of my fav tropes to savor toward the end. Then I panicked, I didn't have enough time and went back to shorter fics.

4. Was there a trope that you’ve read a lot of previously that you found uniquely presented? - I’ve read a fair few 8th year fics. But I thoroughly enjoyed Head Full of You by MaesMora. It was light, fun and I liked sassy Harry, meddling Blaise, Blaise and Harry as roommates and the little Blaise/Neville.

5. What's a moment in a fic that genuinely got you to tear up? - Every Breath You Take by hephaestiions - I read this for the angst trope and boy does this fic bring the angst. I cried throughout this fic. First when Scorpius dies. Then when Draco finds Harry, dead, by the roses and the last line “We’re family. We wait.” I was raw and red eyed! This is a gorgeous fic though it may not be everyone's cup of tea!

6. Was there a trope you’ve never read or heard of before? What did you think? - I’ve not really read many Dragon or Patronus fics. So I took my time searching for those. I landed up reading 2 beautiful Dragon fics. Blood and Fire and Of Roses and Dragonfire (though the 2nd one landed in the trice read list before I could finish it...oh well, it then lead me to the former fic which was great too.)

7. Which trope did you read that pleasantly surprised you? - Deaging. I haven't read many of those fics, but I enjoyed Draco caring for little Harry in Dear Potter. Bodyswap is another trope I haven't read much of.

8. Is there a fic that made you laugh out loud? - It has got to be Three Stripes, a Muffin Top, and Those Pink Shoes This fic is absolutely delightful. It’s got bratty teens, sexy older Drarry, model/fashionista Draco, shenanigans and honest conversations.

9. What is your favourite trope and why? - I enjoy Kid fics. I love baby Teddy or Scorpius, the Potter kids or even OC kids. I like the wholesomeness, domesticity and the complexity that comes with a family fic. These fics always have a lot of warmth and fluff or even angst sometimes and it's lovely to read.

10. Which tropes did you skip? Would you be willing to share why? If you didn’t skip a trope, was there one that gave you pause? - I skipped Epilogue compliant and Room of requirement...Mainly because I couldn’t find an interesting and long fic to read. So I compensated those with tropes I enjoy and sunk into some nice long fics.

11. Which suit did you have the most fun reading? Why? - I enjoyed Clubs and Hearts. I finished Clubs first, I was following a few fests and it was fun to read those fics. Hearts had some fun tropes like vacation fic.

12. Did you rec any fics to your friends during the game/fest? Which ones? - Yep, Once a Malfoy Every Breath You Take and In Our Blood

13. Do you have any feedback for the mods of the game/fest? Would you be interested in playing again if the opportunity arose? Share more info about your experience. - The fest was so well organized and all the mods are so amazing! A huge thank you to all of them for organizing and executing this fest. I would certainly participate again. When I started Wizard’s Hearts I was only a reader / lurker in the fandom and I loved this concept coz it allowed me to participate in a fandom fest which I wouldn’t otherwise be able to do. The discord group also introduced me to some lovely people. It's been a great experience.

Merthur Kiss Fest 2019 Masterlist

The Merthur Kiss Fest has concluded for yet another year! We're sad to see it go, but so very glad that it happened. Quick apology for the wait, as this was meant to go up a bit ago already. But thank you all for your patience. <3

There are only two options now - jump or be killed, and, well . . . kissing isn't one of them. So . . . what are you doing, Arthur?
