Higurashi When They Cry - Watanagashi Chapter 5
I just want everyone to know that I don’t have the Steam achievement for meeting Shion. That’s so outrageous. I have the Steam achievement for getting food from Shion and the Steam achievement for getting rescued by Shion but not the one for meeting her.
Anyways
Keiichi’s Shion Meal is actually a super powerful rare meal he obtained via cheating that has been imposed upon him.
Also I think Rena is shipping Keiichi and Mion probably. If I’m right that’d be funny after Keiichi spent half of the last arc shipping Keiichi and Rena.
Hmm. Two? Where by “Two?” I mean “That’s inherently unacceptable!!”
Oh, Keiichi’s voice acting was cute here. That’s a first. For his voice acting. And probably a higher single-digit number in terms of overall Keiichi Cuteness Moments. Still a single-digit number either way though. But... a higher one if we’re counting things other than voice acting.
Keiichi learns that he can actually drag three leeches to the Shion Meal, but he only learns it while surrounded by leeches, so he learned it at a bad time, because it takes more than three leeches to surround a person, and also he doesn’t like them.
Keiichi doesn’t like to make jokes about sexual assault. I guess that makes him a better When They Cry protagonist than Battler.
Ew... did I really just say that...? Ew... disgusting...
Hmm, if Rena is actually a Keiichi/Mion shipper, and Shion is actually a completely different person from Mion (possibly untrue) and Keiichi is stupid (definitely true), that specific set of conditions would mean it sucks for Rena how Shion is groping all over Keiichi. Metaphorically speaking. It’s up to you to figure out what part of what I just said was a metaphor--shouldn’t be too hard, maybe.
Unfortunately for Keiichi, Shion’s Mealhouse is also a den of leeches. The acting drains from their voices and presumably also the color drains from Keiichi’s face.
fuck, this entire chapter is making me like keiichi. the stakes aren’t even high, why do i like him right now
Well, I guess this is just the same thing they pulled on the show Frasier via the existence of Niles Crane. Except I actually like Niles Crane. Not that I’m an avid Frasier fan.
Keiichi reiterates his stance that sexual harassment is actually bad.
Non-voiced text disagrees.
Keiichi decides to unveil the foreshadowed Shion Reciprocity and make a huge scene. Also he’s fatphobic. Also his fuckin’ Way-More-Useless-Spidey-Senses are inescapable even when they don’t really impact the plot meaningfully. They truly are innate to the boy himself, and not simply to his genre.
Ick, don’t say that. Especially not without enclosing it in <>s, old-timer! ...Actually I don’t know offhand which localization is older, but I know what I like, so I have chosen to ascribe youth to that which I like.
Keiichi lacks training and is a young man, so in order to cover for one of those deficiencies, he summons Chekhov’s Leeches who aren’t young men: Rena and the Toddlers.
wtf since when are all the losers not losers. they’re even less losery than the last time they weren’t losers!!
LMAO
Keiichi is pretending he owns walky-talkies. Or maybe he actually owns them. Probably not though.
The punctuation is getting sassy this time around. I like it! :)
This is the single most vile sentence known to man???
Why’d an entire BG get drawn for this restroom. How many more times is Keiichi gonna come in here.
Not “a” girl, not “the” girl, but simply Girl, in its purest state. Like a Toddler 02-shaped-hole punched through reality straight to the ocean known as All Quantifiable “Girl” Substance. I guess that makes Toddler 02 one of the best characters, because entity-shaped holes punched through reality are extremely great, especially when they lead to The Outer Turn!
...why would anyone trying to rationally explain their position end their sentence with “NyaaaAAAHH~”. Well whatever
Ah, but the English words used by the voice acting were clearly “I shall return”. Everyone else isn’t actually going to return, and the implication that they will is a false narrative concocted for unclear yet sinister reasons.
Anyway, Keiichi’s anti-leech fatphobia saved the day.
If the voice acting is to be believed, then the definition of the word “hau” is “was a pervert”. This explains a lot about Rena’s character!
Hmm... I suppose it could be said then that I also wield it... the power to make Keiichi laugh...
Ah yes, playing dumb. Another episode of Keiichi Being Correct Moments.
Is Rena calling Keiichi “the girl” here? Hmm... it suits him.
Rena all-but-confirms Keiichi’s theory that Mion and Shion are the same. Phew, I guess the fact that Shion loves groping Keiichi isn’t going to ruin Rena’s day after all. Not that I care especially deeply about that specific Mood Hypothetical.
Ah... hold on... let me do some cross-referencing...
“I’m very kind and thoughtful, but Shion has a cold and scary personality...!”
Alright. Dichotomy noted.
Nico Robin moment
Correct.
Wrong.
MEAN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! >:(
Oh right, I kinda forgot about that too. It was like two hiatuses ago on my part.
Um. Okay dude
Anyway, I can’t believe it... Keiichi has entered his Mind Palace and activated Smart Mode. Via the activation of Smart Mode, he’s completely eviscerated his greatest character flaw... this power level is way too high...
...okay even with Smart Mode activated, Keiichi didn’t even note the dichotomy I noted. Okay
Y’know a friend was saying a while ago that as someone who started with the anime, he found the VN’s pacing unbearable. I wonder if the anime also has this many extensive flashbacks in Keiichi’s Mind Palace.
BRO THE WORLD IS SO ORANGE??? There need to be more visual novels that take place in Orange World.
Anyway, this is just the plot of Umineko.
Keiichi decides to fix everything by giving Shion a toy, like in that Phineas and Ferb movie where Doofenshmirtz fixes everything by giving Shoofenshmirtz a toy. Keiichi is standing in for Mion in this situation and also this analogy doesn’t make any sense.
Wait, actually, Keiichi isn’t going to give Shion a toy directly, he’s going to make Mion give Shion the toy. So my analogy was fucking great and all of you were wrong to ever doubt me!
You jackass. Mion, just give her the toy already so she goes to jail
yeah she is laying this on way too thick for it to be anything other than a lie
i am going to commit fucking murder
Meanwhile, in Side Story Land...
What??? Why is Shion putting Keiichi in a car in Side Story Land??? What is this
OMG!!!! IT’S ULKI FROM FIRE EMBLEM!!!! YES YES YES YES YES

22 questions
I was tagged by @my-little-kraken. Thanks for the tag, love!
1. The book that transformed your life.
I wouldn’t say this transformed my life, but a book that had quite an impact on me was Night by Elie Wiesel. I really learned a lot about the Holocaust from it.
2. The movie that changed the way you see the world.
I don’t think this changed the way I see the world, but it did sort of change my life— 1917. It wasn’t even the movie itself that changed my life, it was the fandom. The 1917 fandom is full of such wonderful people, and they really changed my life in the best way possible.
3. The music that makes part of the soundtrack of your life.
Any songs by Bix Beiderbecke, Glenn Miller, and Annette Hanshaw.
4. Define longing.
The desire for something you can’t have, whether it be temporary or permanent.
5. If you got back in time, which scene would you visit of your life?
I would probably re-live one of the summers when I was little. Going to baseball games, going to the fair here, and listening to The Beach Boys, The Chantays and Buddy Holly all day.
6. The place where your heart is.
The museum that I volunteer at. It’s a 1920s museum that’s like a little 1920s town. I’ve always wished I lived there.
7. The travel of your life.
I went to Victoria last summer (exactly a year ago actually) and it was so much fun. There are so many historical buildings there and it’s a lovely city!
8. An author that you have met recently, and whose works you want to continue to read.
The author I met most recently was like 5 years ago. Shane Peacock came to my school. I’ve read his Boy Sherlock Holmes series and loved it.
9. Coffee or tea?
TEA ALL THE WAY. I may or may not be a bit addicted to tea...
10. Who’s your Doctor (if you don’t watch Doctor Who, who’s your favorite character from a TV series)?
I don’t watch Dr. Who, but my favourite TV characters are probably Niles Crane from Frasier, Ralph Furley from Three’s Company, and Opie Taylor from The Andy Griffith Show.
11. If you could just throw everything away and live your dream, what would you do?
I would time travel to Edwardian England.
12. If you could choose to be a character from a book, TV series or movie, who you would be?
I would probably be Liz from Keeping Up Appearances. Even though putting up with Hyacinth would be a pain, I think it would be quite amusing to live next door to her and watch her complain to the mailman or the milkman or her relatives or to whoever approaches her house.
13. What makes you not like a story?
Unfinished endings. I don’t mind a bit of a cliffhanger, but when the story really doesn’t seem to have a proper ending, I don’t like it. I like when stories come to some sort of conclusion, not when you have to come up with your own ending.
14. Do you like romance in stories? Why?
I wouldn’t say I’m specifically into romance stories, but I think some sort of romance can really add to the plot of any genre. Even if it’s, like, a horror movie, romance of some sort gives the characters more depth.
15. Which book did you hate having read?
I absolutely hated Cinder. The plotline wasn’t very interesting or believable and the ending was awful. It was supposed to be a twisted version of Cinderella but it was nothing like it. It was really, really bad. Also, one book I had to read in grade 7 that I hated was Le Grenouille et la Baleine. Does a cheesy book from 1988 about a girl being able to breathe underwater and talk to whales sound interesting to you? Not to mention the fact that French is my second language? That book was truly awful. I cried while reading it— not because it was emotional, but because I got so frustrated with having to read it.
16. Which movie did you hate having watched?
Trolls. It was so, so bad. I get that it’s a children’s movie, but it was wayyyy too sunshine and rainbows and unicorns. When I got my wisdom teeth removed, Trolls happened to be playing in the lobby and I just about died
17. Do you like anime/manga? Any favorite?
Nope. I did like Pokemon when I was younger, though.
18. Who is the best villain you saw in a story?
The Lodger in The Lodger (wow what a great sentence). I know it’s revealed that he isn’t the villain, but Ivor Novello plays such a convincing villain! Yet, I can totally see why he was innocent.
19. If you could do an interview with any person, alive or dead, from our world, who would you choose and why?
Buster Keaton, of course! I would love to hear him talk more about his vaudeville days and what it was like.
20. If you could meet and and befriend a writer, who would it be?
I would definitely meet F. Scott Fitzgerald, but I’m not sure if I would want to befriend him. Because he had a lot of personal troubles I feel like he would be a bit difficult to get along with sometimes. But I would definitely love to have a conversation with him!
21. Cats or dogs?
Dogs!!!
22. If you could choose any time period or society to live, which it would be?
As I said before, it would probably be Edwardian England!
This was fun, thank you for tagging me! I’m tagging @schofielded, @made-by-our-history, @silverscene, @lukethewanderer, @heavy-focking-metal, and @miss-amna if you would like to do this!

@fallynleaf tagged me in a “get to know you better” meme so here it goes
top three ships: This is hard because I am an inveterate multishipper and I’m not currently into any specific shippy stuff. My old holdout is McShep from SGA. Right now I’m still very much in the trenches of Boku no Hero Academia fandom and I’ll be clear with you, the fandom is an absolute shitshow and cesspool of rudeness so just typing this very well may get me death threats but I totally ship Bakudeku, although I also am cool with practically every other ship out there (and there are a LOT). Okay now that I’m mulling it over I still have a lot of feelings about Ron/Hermione, which is very boring old lady of me but whatchagonnado, and besides, my other HP ship is Snarry so there’s your real “getting to know me better” factoid. I have a real thing for best friends who snark at each other and then fall in love with lots of friction along the way.
last movie: I rarely watch movies these days. A while ago I saw the theatrical rerelease of Princess Mononoke and it was as mind blowingly gorgeous as I remembered.
lipstick or chapstick: lipstick but only rarely, when I need to do Real Human drag. I’ve got this fancy lip mask stuff that I put on but it’s nothing like chapstick and also I have no idea if it does anything other than make my mouth sticky when I go to bed.
watching: oddly enough, Frasier. It’s my comfort show apparently, I watch it about once a decade it seems. Turns out I’m damn near Niles-kin. I just watched the episode where it’s revealed that neither Crane brother can ride a bicycle and I’m like, IT ME
last song: Uyama Hiroto’s Into the Freedom, I’m very much into freeform contemporary jazz these days. BUT ALSO, TONIGHT!!!! I’ll be going to the opera! So by the time anybody probably reads this my last song will have been the entirety of Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin. It is by all accounts extremely russian. I’m not the hugest fan of Tchaikovsky’s music; it strikes me as bombastic in a formulaic way, but I acknowledge that this is my modern sensibilities at play. At one level of remove, his work is a fascinating interplay of the cultural influences of his time period and place between east and west, conservative and liberal, old and new.
reading: FANFICTION. Right now as I said I’m deep in the trenches of Boku no Hero Academia fandom; I’ve got like thirty tabs open in another window. I will not be reccing any because tbqh it’s mostly trash and the good stuff is easy to find by sorting AO3 by kudos. But my brains does what it wants, I guess. Mostly it wants to read about All Might living with chronic pain and Bakugou getting roasted into being a better person.
playing: I recently played and beat Link’s Awakening and now I’m on a big Zelda kick again. I think I’m going to try playing ye olde Link to the Past, even though I am righteously terrible at older videogames. I also regularly play Gloomhaven most Saturday nights, which is an enormous board game if you didn’t know. I play a Quatryl Tinkerer named Bosch, they’re nonbinary and I named them after hieronymus bosch because when I first looked at the illustration I thought they looked a little bit like a ninja turtle gone terribly wrong so I was like “master painters, but much weirder...”
tag 9 people: (if you wanna do it please consider yourself tagged) @splitredglove @nonasuch @mere-vanilla @wexlermendelssohn @cosmoscrusher @twiggymcbones @gravityeyelids @xavixavxav @221b-bakerstreet-camelot

Tropical White Morning Glory: Describe your aesthetic.
mountains, cabins, flowers, fall, flannel, small coffee shops, pastels
Tulip: What would be the best present to get you?
Im not one to be picky about gifts? I just love anything that someone put some thought into and thought I would like or reminded them of me but i feel bad if it was something expensive or anything lol
Vervain: What’s stressing you out most right now?
Final exams and graduation

i just started watching frasier and i've been thinking about this ever since i followed you yesterday, may i ask how 'lesbian niles' works. i feel like i'd like it
the truth is that lesbian niles works however you want it to work. i know i made a joke about the lesbian niles expanded universe, but the truth is that there’s really no singular pseudocanon. i just happen to be a lesbian who grew up on frasier and has been feeling particularly fond of it the past couple years and, on seeing the absolutely unrivaled repression of it all, decided to say, “niles crane is one of us.” evidently a few people seem to agree with me.
i don’t think i have any one lesbian niles tag or anything (though… realistically, “niles crane” functions approximately as such), but i can direct you to a few things i’ve written featuring lesbian niles!!
synchronicity - easily my magnum opus. roughly 10k of me essentially retelling the entire niles/daphne arc through the lens of niles being a lesbian.
buzzed - this is mostly about daphne, but it’s also specifically about the value of gay friendships and guess what… her friendship with lesbian niles is just that. groundbreaking. oh also she gets a buzzcut because we have fun here.
much too thrilling - another daphne focus featuring lesbian niles, although this time more romantically. i basically wrote this because i love first dates and women and needed practice with character creation.
i believe there are four more assorted lesbian niles fics in my fic tag, these ones based on song prompts. if you would like to send me such prompts you may certainly do so! and if you would like to create your own lesbian niles content, i would naturally be delighted and would love if you sent it to me or tagged me in it so i could enjoy it.
oh also i always imagine her as a butch for a few reasons (some of which i am willing to share if you are interested in hearing, though i don’t wish to write a dissertation on it unprompted for the time being), but i imagine there are people who have other thoughts. just know that the niles i write is pretty consistently a butch lesbian. i feel like that very much informs my characterization of her.
#asks#sporesman#fortunately or unfortunately my unromantic romantic mindset has gained some romance. and as a result i am... tempted to write fic again

Frasier “Daphne Returns” An Analysis
"Daphne Returns" : an analysis.
The most profound episode where the audience actively go through a séance of psychotherapy with the characters and assist them in their psychological development. To me, it represents so much, especially regarding Niles's inappropriate behaviour towards Daphne in the last seven years.
Before I continue, I also want to point out that the whole episode also relies on Niles's attitude in general. Just think about his patient coming in to talk about his germ phobia. Niles is completely oblivious of his own huge flaws (germ phobia). Yet, Niles has, in front of him, an exact portrait of his own pathology and he is not able to help that patient, less himself.
I may be alone here but Niles's way of stalking Daphne, stealing kisses, creeping out on her (cutting her picture from the newspaper, entering her room without her consent, dropping a necklace in her blouse, recording her while she sleeps, discouraging her from dating, etc…), putting himself in awkward situation only to gain more chances to look up Daphne's backside or cleavage is, honestly, creepy and inappropriate. This episode, for me, WINS. It puts Niles under the interrogatory lights and he has to FACE his attitude and, of course, the consequence: the woman he thinks he loves so deeply for "who she is" is immensely suffering from his behaviour.
Take away Jane Leeves's pregnancy and the need of scenario excuse to give her an easy temporary exit, Daphne's weight gain is on point. Just heard you've been secretly adored and tricked by a grown man you've considered a dear friend? Its comprehensible someone might develop a mental problem and look for an escape: disappearance.
Without even knowing it, Daphne is right. She is invisible because she is compared to perfection. To Niles, in the actual present, she is invisible. When she gained 60 pounds, Niles never saw it. When she lost 60 pounds and sits in the car with him, Niles still does not see her "Who said that? Who's in my car?" [even though it was a joke, the humour speaks the truth]. He even had the audacity to give Daphne that damn tango dress she can no longer fit into. Living the past, Niles?
How can anybody live up to that?
Then arrives our dear Frasier with his brotherly love. Frasier visits Niles and does not attack. He arrives gently, knows perfectly the sensitive nature of their imminent conversation. Frasier at his best. The caring in his eyes, the profound respect he has for both Niles, his brother, and Daphne, his friend.... He takes his time, lets Niles explain himself. At first, Niles is unaware of his own idealization of Daphne, and further in the conversation, Frasier sees that something clicks inside Niles, and when Niles starts to back away in denial, Frasier speaks tenderly and effectively. My appreciation of Frasier's character has grown deeper, thanks to this specific episode.
Cinematographically speaking, the use of transition from present and souvenirs is sublime, original and poignant. Seeing Frasier and Niles physically revisiting Niles's memories is really touching and it gives the audience more material to understand Daphne's fears of not being able to measure up. It is also melancholy and so "Crane" [they applause at Niles and Daphne's tango dance in the souvenir of Moon Dance]. It is visually pleasing. I also think that revisiting the memories fill the lack of words Niles would've used to explain to Frasier the profound root of his infatuation.
From the beginning of the episode when Daphne returns, all sorts of compliments are given to Daphne. Of course, they speak about her weight loss, but she also receives Honorable words. Frasier celebrates her warmth, her spirit, her influence that can be seen in thousands different ways. Its only later in the episode that Niles also compliments Daphne in other ways than physically: she is caring, compassionate, moody, likes jelly instead of syrup. Niles is almost there…but his behaviour is still dangerous for his relationship with Daphne. He is persuaded not being blinded by infatuation. Have you seen the cartoon bluebird landing on her shoulder?
When Niles is convinced to love Daphne's everyday side, what does he mean by that? Loving her for who she is, is it seeing only negative traits? Not liking her cooking, being too tall… This approach is clumsy, it hurts and Daphne is still invisible to Niles, he did not consider her feelings. We have to give him a chance, he only just grasped his problematic adoration. He is beginning to see Daphne in the present, without that tango dress.
By speaking about their problematic confidence issue, Daphne wanted to strengthen her relationship with Niles, not destroy it or blame him specifically. When Niles finally accept to speak about it - even if it is clumsy - , the couple is able to unlock so much. They solidify and live their love.
And when they did consume their love, Niles is living in the present and is respecting Daphne. He does not brag about it to Frasier, he simply is there, contented.
Thanks to Jane Leeves's pregnancy, because I doubt the authors would have brought up the subject of Nile's behaviour towards Daphne. Or even if they did with another approach, I'm afraid it wouldn't have had such a depth analyst. Niles deserved to be told.
In conclusion, I adore everything about this episode. Even Roz and Martin's storyline about children book and dogs is adorable and their dynamics is particular. "You really don't get Eddie, don't you?".

hi jen! do u have any movie/tv show recs? i feel like i need a break from fics ahdj i need to watch something. thank you! have a good day!
I love this, and of course I do!! The real question is whether you’ve already seen these, or if they’re even up your alley, so if you want some more fine-tuning, just ping me again!
I’m not the best with movies, tbh, it takes me forever and a day to get around to them, so I’d probably tend to rec things like The Man from UNCLE, Singin’ in the Rain, Marie Antoinette, etc., just because they’re in my forever-fave category; the Old Guard is on my list because of all the gifs/clips I’ve already seen (I started it, though, and it seems good!)
TV, oof, I can send you round the bend here, so I’ll try and keep it brief! My recent faves are Pose, Derry Girls, the Untamed, the Witcher, and all versions of the Great British Bake Off (season 3 James/John, aimh) and other shows where British people gently judge other British people; I also have Cheer on my “to watch” list, along with a ton of documentaries. I love the garbage series Real Housewives but only of Bev Hills, NYC, and Potomac, and I tend to do other things while it’s on (like answer email, do laundry, etc.). I also love a lot of TV shows for their aesthetics (among other things!), like random 60s and 70s shows, recent-ish stuff like Agent Carter, Mad Men, and the New Pope, and random big shows, like Doctor Who, X Files, various Star Trek(s), Parks & Rec, Bob’s Burgers, etc. I’m being pulled hard into watching a lot of older TV shows right now because so many new blogs I’ve found are HILARIOUS and building their own microfandoms, which I LOVE TO SEE, and they’re inspiring me to go back and watch again or for the first time (looking at you, Magnum, B.I. squad, and especially the Columbo blogs I follow that also blog about lesbian Niles Crane off Frasier, MASH, Sweet Smell of Success, and other things).
I’m not sure if that’s all that helpful, so please do let me know if you want me to jump into a specific category--I know I’m forgetting stuff here, too, sigh. Can’t wait to vault off my couch later and yell at the air about it!
#so easy to overthink lmao#but honestly i have way too many thoughts and opinions about other things#and i'd love to help out!

a tentative frasier/good place au that nobody asked for: frasier and martin are paired up specifically to torture each other, niles is paired with Obvious Demon maris, roz is the one who keeps figuring out what is going on, daphne is janet, simon is bad place janet, gil is the vicky type who wants a better part, bebe is the architect, eddie is merely a construct of a dog?
(don’t worry, you didn’t send me this ask before! the only time i’ve talked about the good place is in my cheers au idea).
i love this???? with frasier it’s obviously much different because martin, niles, and frasier all obviously knew each other while they were alive. so maybe everyone wouldn’t have romantic soulmates here, but the cranes would be told they’re in a special neighborhood together so they can also bond with family in the afterlife (and are told hester isn’t there for some made-up reason).
so like in the show, martin and frasier would be assigned to live together and are miserable, niles has false memories of being married to maris while alive even though she’s just a demon there to torture him, etc. honestly YES at everything here, holy shit it’s all completely perfect. and daphne as janet accidentally messing up the architect’s plans by bringing everyone together and having niles fall in love with her… amazing.

Definition/Understanding → Research → Comparison/Reflection → Narrative & Character
A question that has kept occurring in my head whenever “primitive” has been mentioned is, what exactly is it? What is a primitive world? What makes it primitive- and what does it look like?
When I think of a ‘primitive world’, I immediately start thinking of the early stages of civilisation; primitive civilisation.
Source: ScienceDirect.com - International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences, reference work
In International Encyclopedia of the Social & Behavioral Sciences (Second Edition), 2001, written by Alexander F. Robertson, he describes “Primitive” as following;
“‘Primitive’ is a term from the evolutionary vocabulary of the nineteenth century that in popular understanding still identifies the interests of the modern discipline of anthropology. Anthropologists have sought to come to respectful terms with their ‘Primitive’ subject matter by redefining it in terms of a distinctive social structure, culture, spatial distribution, and type of livelihood. But despite efforts to set aside disparaging contrasts between primitive society and modern civilisation, evolutionary assumptions about human progress remain embedded in both scientific and humanistic approaches to society.”
When reading this, I was intrigued by the idea of how we as a society choose to interpret and understand the word; [primitive]. The way that it’s a modern way of understanding something ancient, as if we are looking back at something through a veil, based on the fact that we are so far and ahead from our ancestors, in an evolutionary sense, that we define them by what tools they used. (ex. stone age)
Further, Alexander F. Robertson also describes “Primitive Society” as such;
“In popular usage, ‘primitive society’ distinguishes ourselves from other people who have made little progress toward what we understand as civilization. There are very few such people left today: they live in scattered communities in deserts or rainforests, and they interest us mainly because we think of them as the living relics of our own distant ancestors. The comparison is usually unflattering. Until the beginning of the nineteenth century ‘primitive’ simply meant ‘first’ or ‘earliest,’ but as the word was applied to the original inhabitants of territories colonised by European and American states, it acquired the connotations of inferior, backward, rude.”
As for when I reflected upon his first quote, this sort of applies to this second quote. I find it incredibly interesting to think about the way in which not only us as the more modern society, but also how the societies prior to ours have interpreted this. The idea of something being the “first” and the “earliest” appearance of mankind; How that later was used against the people, using their way of living as an insult of them being “lesser”.
Early civilisations research:
Identify the variety of early civilisations → Choose two → Time, where, what defined their way of living – remember to add visuals!
With a clearer understanding of what exactly a ’primitive world’ is based upon, I can’t help but want to look into the word “civilisation”. What ancient civilisations exist and what traces of their existence have their left behind?
One of the obvious ones that immediately comes to mind are the Egyptians. They were an ancient civilisation, located in Egypt by the banks of the Nile. Their time of rule being 3150 BC – 30 BC (according to the conventional Egyptian chronology). They are said to have had a political understanding of their society, referred to as “Upper” and “Lower Egypt” under the first pharaoh. Though this was only possible because there were already settlers around the Nile banks and valley around 3500 BC. Their civilisation was rich, well known for their prodigious culture and their architecture, especially the pyramids and Sphinx.
They had a wide variety of things that defined their culture and way of living; this can be seen in the way that they made mummies which preserved ancient pharaohs and other important figures of the time to this very day. Hieroglyphs not only tells stories of their age and time, but also shows how their language was developed and used.
Tutankhamun’s Mask:
Narmer Palette:
Another ancient civilisation that came to my mind was the Maya Indians. I have researched them in the past for a written school project, so I already know a good amount about their culture.
The ancient Maya civilisation planted their roots in Central America at around 2600 BC – 900 AD. Once they had established themselves in present-day Yucatan, Mexico, they proceeded to prosper and become a sophisticated folk. By 700 BC, they Mayans had developed their own system of writing which they then used to create calendars of the solar system, all carved into stone.
According to the Mayans, the world was created on August 11, 3114 BC (the date of which their calendar begins), and the supposed end date was December 21, 2012.
This ancient civilisation was incredibly rich compared to many other civilisations of the time. They built pyramids, much like the Egyptians, but some of their buildings were even much larger than the pyramids.
It is still a complete mystery what happened to the Maya Indians. Their population suddenly began to rapidly decline. Why did the Mayans, a highly sophisticated and developed civilisation made up of more than 19 million people, suddenly collapse and disappear during the eighth or ninth century? What happened to them?. Despite this, there are still descendants of the Mayans that live in the central parts of America to this day.
From the last brief, we looked at a lot of narrative based things such as mythologies and folklores. One of the things I stumbled upon was the origin of the myth and folklore about the creature; wendigo. I didn’t further look into this, but this reminded me of it.
The folklore originates from the Native Americans, more specifically the tribe that goes by the name of “Algonquin”. The Algonquin people are natives from Canada and this folk lived and still to this day, live around parts of western Quebec and Ontario, centering themselves around the Ottawa River. Like the Mayans, there are still people identified as having Algonquin ancestry. (from 2016, 40,880 people).
- The Algonquin people have been known by various Europeans since 1603, first encountered by Samuel de Champlain.

Algonquin traditional territory
The Algonquin hunted, traded and lived in large areas of territories in the Eastern Woodlands Subarctic regions, being independent of one another. Like some of their relatives, the Algonquin used to live in disassembled birch bark dwellings, known better as wigwams.
They lives in communities where clans were represented by totems based on different animals such as crane, wolf, bear, loon etc. The clans had incorporated leadership provided by elders which were highly respected within each clan. Intermarriage within a clan was not permitted, even if the people were from different communities all-together.
Their language was known as Omàmiwininmowin, which is part of the Algonquian language family. The root of this word is Omàmiwininì, which is often used by the community to describe Algonquin people overall.
Within the Algonquin language family are a wide variety of different languages such as Atikamekw, Blackfoot, Cree, Wolastoqiyik, Mi’kmaq, Innu, Naskapi, Ojibwe and Oji-Cree. Within all of these mentioned, the Algonquian language group was the language mostly spoken in Canada, with around 175,825 speakers. The majority of these speakers reside in;
Manitoba (21.7%)
the rest live in;
Quebec (21.2%)
Ontario (17.2%)
Alberta (16.7%)
Saskatchewan (16.0%)
Despite the language being quiet widespread amongst the clans/tribes, it is considered endangered today. Only 1,575 people identify the language as their mother tongue. Algonquin communities work hard to promote and preserve their language and culture through various different programs, such as language courses.
The Algonquin language is often linked to different names of places in Canada, with the reason being that many early French explorer mapped and thereby named features with Algonquin words. Ex. Quebec comes from the Algonquin word kébec, which actually means “place where the river narrows”.
𝖂𝖊𝖓𝖉𝖎𝖌𝖔
The original tale of the wendigo talks about a lost hunter that, during a cold winter, reached intense hunger which drove him to cannibalism to survive. After he had been feasting upon another humans’ flesh, he transformed, his body changing and becoming a humanlike-beast of the wilderness on the hunt for more human flesh to feast upon.
As mentioned earlier, this story originates from the Algonquin people. The details vary rapidly depending on who you ask, as most folklore and tales do. Some people that claim they have encountered this creature say it’s related to Bigfoot, but on the other end of the spectrum, some compare it too werewolves.
An animatronic depiction of a wendigo in a cage on display in “Wendigo Woods” in Busch Gardens Williamsburg, a theme park located in New France.
The mythological create that is the Wendigo is said to be a creature thriving in cold environments, supporting the fact that most of the many sightings of them have been reported in Canada and also the colder states to the North such as Minnesota. Around the turn of the 20th century, tribes people form the Algonquian tribe claimed that the disappearances of people is down the wendigos’ attacking them.
The wendigo is said to be around 15 feet tall (4.57 m.), the body often described as being skeletal or emaciated. A theory on this says that the creature is never satisfied with its cannibalistic urges and kills, obsessively hunting for new human victims and stuck being forever hungry.
Picture of Basil H. Johnston.
A Native author and ethnographer named Basil H. Johnston has described the Wendigo in his book The Manitous as:
“The Wendigo was gaunt to the point of emaciation, its desiccated skin pulled tightly over its bones. With its bones pushing out over its skin, its complexion the ash gray of death, and its eyes pushed back deep into the sockets, the Wendigo looked like a gaunt skeleton recently disinterred from the grave. What lips it had were tattered and bloody… Unclean and suffering from suppurations of the flesh, the Wendigo gave off a strange and eerie odor of decay and decomposition, of death and corruption.”
The front cover of Basil H. Johnstons’ book The Manitous, published 1995.
According to Nathan Carlson, an ethno-historian, it has also been said that the deadly cannibalistic creature has large, razor sharp claws and massive eyes, much like and owl. But some people prefer to describe it (the wendigo) as a skeleton-like with skin in the colour of ash. But no matter which version of the wendigo’s appearance seems the most accurate and possible, it is most obviously not a creature you’d want to run into anywhere in the wild.
Another thing that I found quite interesting about the Native Americans in general was the way that their belief reached a spiritual level (spirit animals, animal totems etc.). I did some digging when looking into Animal Totems and sacred Spirit Animals in Native American belief;
According to this website (Legends Of America, Exploring history, destinations, people, & legends of this great country since 2003.), there is a huge list of different animals involved with the Native belief. A totem (a spirit being) is considered a sacred object or a symbol for a clan, tribe, family or even just an individual. Some tribes and their traditions proves that each person is somehow connected with nine different animals, also known as spirit guides or power animals, that will accompany the person through their life. Each animal represents something different, meaning that they move in and out of ones life, depending on what path or direction you take in life and the journey.
The same tribes also believe that totem animals is one that i always with you in your life, physically and spiritually. In other words, the totem animal that you are given acts as the main guardian of all your spirits. With this animal, a connection is shared and created, either through an interest in the said animal, the characteristics, dreams or other interactions (ie. with the animal in the physical world).
Because the list is quite long, the entirety of it can be found here.

From studying these different early periods of civilisation, I have decided to choose just two of them to inspire my diorama; Mayans (the fact and idea that this blossoming civilisation suddenly disappeared without a trace as to tell why) and Native Americans (most specifically the Algonquin tribe and their folklore).

Perception Function Development (and Disney Character Arcs) (and also one reason why Frasier is fantastic)
Let’s talk about Disney. Or at least, let’s talk about Disney in a moment. First, let’s talk about post-modern German literature.
A while ago, I read Christa Wolf’s No Place on Earth. Taking place in the early 19th century, it describes the fictional meeting of two Romantic writers: Karoline von Gunderrode and Heinrich von Kleist. There’s very little to it, honestly: the two main characters circle around each other at a fairly boring party, have a few minutes of intense conversation, then go their separate ways.
It really stuck with me, as it is easily one of the best portrayals of Ni that I have ever read. Gunderrode is portrayed as an INFJ (something that can be gleaned from her poetry as well) and the anguish she describes is specific and abstract in ways that are extremely familiar to anyone with high Ni. Her understanding of herself, the world, and Keist (a Fi-dom) is accurate without being omniscient, and it’s woven into her own abstract understanding of her fate and her identity. This, specifically the idea of only seeing the world as it is reflected in and through the self, is the essence of Introverted Perception.
In general I feel that there’s often a bit of a bungling going on when it comes to representing dominant Introverted Perceivers character arcs (or high-users of Pi, for that matter). Introverted perception translates to action fairly badly, which is why we get such terribly overblown clichés as the omnipotent, inflexible Ni-user and the by-the-book high-Si user. When we do get portrayals of Si and Ni, it tends to be from the perspective of high-Pe users, mainly through the development of their lower functions (i.e. Life is grand and great and I’m trapped here there must be more to it than this! There may or may not be a Disney song or two dedicated to this idea).
Disney frequently has its energetic Pe-doms running around looking for a meaning in life, or a home, or the sort of conceptual resting spot that Pi loves to perch on. Pe generally gets a fairly obvious arc: finding a cause to fight for, a home, a family, discovering some fundamental truth about themselves that gives their world meaning.
Obviously there’s some understanding of what Pi does here. But why, then, are Pi character arcs so off-center? Frozen is a good example of a Si-dom character arc, but Elsa spends the better part of the story in the mountains reveling in the freedoms of being alone. Moana, an INFJ, has a greater understanding of the world around her but her arc revolves around her using her dominant function: there’s no Se development. On the other hand, The Princess and the Frog’s Tiana (as a high-Pi user) spends the movie learning what’s important in life, a spin on the usual Pe arc.
This is tragic. We need to see better representations of Pi in media. And not just more wonderfully polished and absurd abstract conversations (though I’m sure we all miss Hannibal), but other visions of Ni.
Specifically, we need more Frasier: a show dedicated to the ramblings of high-Ni but consistently exposing the absurdity of over-conceptualizing the outside world. It did a great job of making high-Pi users human and relatable without diminishing their use of their higher functions. In particular, Niles Crane’s character arc is an excellent example of low-Se development over time, explored through both his subjugation to Maris (Ni cowed by a repressed and neglected inferior Se) and his pursuit of Daphne (acknowledgement and embrace of healthy Se development). Not only are there a couple episodes where Niles clearly falls into the grip, but David Hyde Pierce’s wonderful portrayal also underlined the bizarre and awkward physicality that not-infrequently emerges in high-Ni users.
So, yeah. More of that.

Ships Quiz
Pick your top ten ships without reading the questions, in order of preference
1. Lily Evans/James Potter, also known as Jily, or DAYUM GIRL (Harry Potter)
2. Arya Stark/Gendry (Game of Thrones)
3. Brienne of Tarth/Jaime Lannister (Game of Thrones)
4. Sansa Stark/Jon Snow (Game of Thrones)
5. Emma Swan/Captain Hook (Once Upon a Time)
6. Jessica Day/Nick Miller (New Girl)
7. Amy Santiago/Jake Peralta (Brooklyn Nine Nine)
8. Andromeda Black/Amos Diggory (Harry Potter)
9. Daphne Moon/Niles Crane (Frasier)
10. Yara Greyjoy/Daenerys Targaryen (Game of Thrones)
Do you remember the episode/scene/chapter that you first started shipping 6?
Yes. It was the episode in season 1 where Cece points out that Nick keeps pointing his feet at Jess, and Jess is trying to dodge around him at the store.
Have you ever read a FanFiction about 2?
I have not read any Arya/Gendry fics. I rarely read fanfiction any more.
Has a picture of 4 ever been your screen saver/profile picture/tumblr avatar?
No, but Sansa is the background image for my phone’s lockscreen.
If 7 were to suddenly break up today, what would your reaction be?
I would be SO MAD and I would cry to @fetchalgernon about it and sit in the corner with a pile of toast, chewing sadly.
Why is 1 so important?
Because Jily is the ship of all ships, the ship of dreams, a perfect marriage between a charming, hilarious, bespectacled idiot and a sweet, strong-minded, sassy redhead. Because my love for them introduced me to so many of my best friends on this earth and because they NEVER fail to make me happy.
Is 9 a funny ship or a serious ship?
Niles and Daphne are timeless. How fucking dare you even ask?
Out of all of your ships listed, which ship has the most chemistry?
Lily/James. I know because I write their damn chemistry.
Out of all of the ships, which ship has the strongest bond?
Obviously, I’m going to say Lily/James again, because I have a decade of fanfic writing and reading behind me to back that up, and because my own headcanons have evolved to the point where the characters are very real to me. The one benefit to a ship we never properly saw in the original work is that they can be whatever you need them to be.
As for the other ships, I’d say that Brienne of Tarth and Jaime Lannister have a particularly strong bond, forged as it has been by the experience they shared on the road to King’s Landing. It’s quite clear that they share a deep love, but I’m not sure if they’ll ever realise it, which is sad.
For similar reasons, I’d also say that Arya/Gendry and Sansa/Jon have strong bonds. Trauma can be great for romance.
How many times have you read/watched 10’s fandom?
If you’re talking Game of Thrones, then countless times. I’ve never actively sought out anything specifically related to Yara/Dany though. They are a casual ship. I’d basically just like to see them bone.
Which ship has lasted the longest?
Niles and Daphne.
How many times, if ever, has 6 broken up?
Nick and Jess have broken up once.
If the world was suddenly thrust into a zombie apocalypse, which ship would make it out alive, 2 or 8?
Hahahahaha, Arya and Gendry for sure.
Did 7 ever have to hide their relationship for any reason?
Haha! Yes they have! And it worked for all of five minutes, until they gave their Captain a heart attack. Oh, Peraltiago (new ship name trademark me)
Is 4 still together?
No but they WILL BE OKAY? JONSA IS REAL.
Is 10 canon?
Sadly no. People keep shipping Dany with characters who AREN’T REMOTELY SUITED TO HER.
If all ten ships were put into a couple’s Hunger Games, which couple would win?
Arya/Gendry, purely because I’d like to see anyone try to kill my best girl.
Has anybody ever tried to sabotage 5’s ship?
About five million curses and a huge subset of the online fandom tried to sabotage Captain Swan, but they got through it.
Which ship would you defend to the death and beyond?
Lily/James forever
Do you spend hours a day going through 3’s tumblr page?
No.
If an evil witch descended from the sky and told you that you had to pick one of the ten ships to break up forever or else she’d break them all up forever, which ship would you sink?
Nick and Jess, probably. I mean, they’re super fun, but the thought of them splitting up doesn’t pain me.

Rhodendron: What is something you used to believe in as a child? I had three ghosts in my house. Catherine, a girl my age that looked similar to me, Casper, like the friendly ghost, and Black Licorice, their black cocker spaniel ghost puppy.
