I think the tragedy of Johnny Silverhand is that he really does fall in love. He loved Kerry, he loved Rogue, he loved Alt, I’m sure he loved others. Was he good at showing it? No. Was he good at relationships? Absolutely fucking not. Toxic angry manipulative man child hours. Was he good at communication or managing his emotions or working on himself as a person? Lol. Was he even able to admit to himself how much of a fucker he was? Maybe sometimes. But the love was absolutely there.

Thinking bout how Johnny in his rocker days probably slept with more people than anyone could ever hope to count. His partners for the most part were either eager groupies or drunk one night stands. Even his girlfriends had this distance between them because he never really had that secure romantic attraction. His inability to reciprocate the love he got from Art, Rogue, etc. mixed with him cheating numerous times make his relationship with V so special, yet torturous.

For the first time in his life Johnny has a real connection to another person. He’s closer to V in a way no other humans have experienced. Johnny feels precisely what V feels and can visibly present himself to them only. The two of them are as close as they can be, but will never have a normal relationship due to him only existing on the chip. The one person he loves more than anyone and he can’t wrap his arms around them or show off to the world. Knowing V loves him back helps a lot, but he can also feel them pining for his touch. It’s probably the safest he’s felt with another human, but he’s actively killing them.

thinking about how v’s name is only uttered twice during the events of cyberpunk 2077, and only once by the person who knew her the most. how the alias of “v” become something akin to a mask, something to hide behind. v the merc, strong-willed and capable. she put “valerie” to bed years ago, buried her. thinking about the conversation at the oilfields, when johnny says “most people i thought were my friends couldn’t even stand to be in the same room with me. you’re fucking closest to me by a long shot, there 24/7. and yet, you don’t seem to hate my living guts.” the intimacy of sharing one mind, one heart. v and johnny as an “us” and “we” in the most literal sense of the word; one and the same. thinking about the tower’s epilogue, where v talks aloud to johnny, even though he’s not there. how in all the endings where one is left without the other, how often that must have happened. how painful it would be to become accustomed to sharing one mind with each other, only to have that ripped away, and the loneliness that must come with it.
