I’ve said it before and honestly I’m not likely to stop saying it but Steve Yockey is a damn gift to this show and fandom and I love him with my whole heart.

Because people seem confused about Yockey’s comment about parentheticals, and the fact that Supernatural scripts don’t use them, HE IS NOT TALKING ABOUT STAGE DIRECTIONS.

Parenthetical: describes what the character is feeling, his motivations, etc.

Stage Directions: describes what we see with our eyeballs

Which might seem like a subtle difference, but it does NOT mean that the writers aren’t giving direction to the actors in their scripts. Hence all the freaking stage directions in all the scripts I’ve been reblogging over the last day or so.

A parenthetical might be something like this:

DEAN (reliving all the times he’d watched his brother die as he helplessly watches it happen again)

A stage direction might be something like this:

DEAN CASTIEL holds him back as he fights to run after SAM as vampires drag his body into the tunnel.

THOSE are stage directions, including the “eyefucking” notes, and Sam and Dean being “overwhelmed with wtf.” That’s what the camera needs to SEE them perform. Parentheticals would describe to the actors WHY they need to feel a certain thing. Mkay? Good.

In 14x14, queer Gorgon MotW Noah Ophis is fond of flowers -- you can observe the plentiful flower bouquets decorating his home:

What caught my eye is this — an orchid centerpiece, complementing the pretty damn romantic ambience and soft hues evoking intimacy in Noah’s dining room (murder aside). The visual framing/alignment of Dean with the orchid could be symbolically significant, and you’ll see why.

As someone with a family of garden-lovers/gardeners, I immediately recognized the orchid on Noah’s dining table.

A quick search on orchids yields: “The most highly coveted of ornamental plants, the delicate, exotic and graceful orchid represents love, luxury, beauty and strength. In ancient Greece, orchids were associated with virility.” 

Noting the cannibalistic ingestion in 14x14, the following passage is interesting: “In fact, Greek women believed that if the father of their unborn child ate large, new orchid tubers, the baby would be a boy. If the mother ate small orchid tubers, she would give birth to a girl.”

Now, the primary aspect of the orchid metaphor I’d like to highlight --> the orchid’s genus name comes from the Ancient Greek ὄρχις (órkhis), “literally meaning "testicle", because of the shape of the twin tubers in some species of Orchis” x 

Additional research generally associates the orchid to sexuality and fertility. 

The orchid is phallic, especially if viewers take the vast queer subtext underpinning Noah and 14x14 (that then becomes TEXT) (I’m writing a separate post on 14x14′s queer subtext) into consideration.

We know that Noah’s name -- Noah Ophis -- is Greek ofiß for serpent (playing into the main meta-tastic Ouroboros themes of 14x14), but Ophis could also be not quite an anagram but an iteration/analog of the orchid: órkhis. Yockey takes GREAT care in characterizing Noah as a sexual villain (the first textually queer MotW if memory serves me right); he’s charming and upfront, preying on male victims onscreen through the power of seduction/sexual manipulation. Noah rides the line between the gender binary, appearing neither super masculine or super feminine: instead he may be seen as twink-y androgynous.

Am I supposed to be surprised? 

Remember that EVERYTHING MEANS SOMETHING.

Noah is a potential textually queer Dean mirror, not to mention that he poisons those he seduces, presenting a narrative reminder of Dean’s low self-worth; his low self-worth subsequently enables him to believe that he’s poison. Dean thinks he poisons the people he loves -- puts them in harm’s way *insert Dean’s previous romances + Destiel meta here* -- and perceives himself as undeserving of love in return, not worthy to be saved.

*resumes yelling* *all this meta in meta in meta is giving me the best kind of headache* *again I need to do AT LEAST 3 rewatches before I can properly absorb 14x14* *more posts to come, hopefully*

Hello my friends! This is the third part of this topic. This time we are gonna talk about 'Funeralia' episode 13x19 written by Steve Yockey.

We had a little of second meaning and laughs in this episode, so I hope you enjoy it.

Cas is a clueless hot angel

The first scene I wanna talk about is Rowena flirting with Castiel because I can. Our sweet witch doesn't lose her opportunity to show she really appreciates Castiel sex apple when she hears him talk at the other side of the line.

Of course, our cute angel reacts all flustered and Dean just looks at him askance like: "why are you blushing?" Which I find very accurate with Jealous!Dean. It's exactly the same reaction he had when Meg was around sending hearts with her eyes to Cas.

Another funny scene was the classic 'ball handler' .

Let's see how this scene starts...

Castiel and Dean are both trying to think how to track Gabe.

Dean: I didn’t say it was gonna be easy, but uh… All right, come on. Ideas. [closes his eyes and rubs his hands together] Come on. Here we go.

Dean starts by making a gesture with his hands, very cute and dummy, just because Castiel is there watching him. Cas sighs and closes his eyes. In that moment Dean flicks his eyes to him. Yeah, Castiel's handsome. But then Mr. MISCOMMUNICATION strikes again...

Dean: (...) Nah. I need a real drink. I’m gonna get a beer. You wanna beer?

Castiel: No.

Dean: I’ll get a beer.

Okay, this is something very VERY known in the fandom, so, I'm not saying new things but, Yockey wanted to remark here the Destiel classic MISCOMMUNICATION. In which Dean offers beer, Castiel says NO, and he gives him a beer anyways. So, if you pay attention bro the body language, Castiel shifts uncomfortably in his place as if he was mad.

Castiel: Maybe Heaven could help us.

Dean: Ah, not for nothing, but don’t the angels mostly want to kill you?

Dean again sending danger around Castiel. He doesn't want his angel to go through it, or die again. So, angels? Heaven? Is not a good idea.

Castiel: Yes. Yeah. This would be something of a Hail Mary.

Dean: Hmm.

Castiel: It’s a sports term, like slam dunk or, uh... ball handler.

Dean: That’s, uh… Mnh-mnh. No, I don’t think it's a good idea.

Castiel is hilariously using a second meaning term and Dean can't explain it because it would mean explain a sexual meaning to the angel, which, it's a big no. So he just checks him out, because he knows Castiel is not aware of he said. But it's also kind of hot and cute.

This is related to Gabe apparition in this season and all the sexuality and second meanings linked to angels.

When they engage into a discussion about why going with the angels is not a good plan, Sam appears in the middle bringing another problem. Dean solves that one and then, coming from nowhere, he just throws the conclusion to their previous chat with Castiel. This quote is full of Dean's deep fears. And it caught Sammy's attention, giving him an idea of what he had just interrupted.

Dean: You better. Cas, you wanna try this angel thing, then go for it. Just don’t get dead again.

'Just don't get dead again'. It's an inner prayer Dean has everyday, each time he recalls Castiel's dead and his own mourning. And Castiel's sueprised face.

Two Lovers

The dialogue between Jessica, the reaper, and Sam and Dean, telling them she's always watching them, it's a creepy foreshadow of Chuck and his eternal watching over the boys. Not intimacy at all.

But, I named this section 'two lovers' and I'm gonna explain why.

There's a pic inside a book Sam and Dean find to research about the murder of several reapers.

That picture had been analyzed plenty but a lot of meta writers in this fandom.

What I'm gonna add here is...

A lady in red ( Dean) a man in blue (Cas) and Death trying to separate them, unfructuously. Why? Because the man in blue (Castiel) kills Death.

This could be applied to:

Castiel killing Billie and then dying and then coming back from the Empty. It could be seen as triumph in episode 13x05 when the lovers are reunited.

But, but, knowing now the facts, I think it applies mostly to 15x18. Because Cas killing Death again... Being swallowed by the Empty (lovers separation) and then coming back to life in Heaven. And they robbed our Destiel reunion, for sure.

To Conclude, Death was always there separating the lovers...

Another quote I'm gonna bring here is something Bernard said to Dean...

Bernard: She’s powerful, she’s gorgeous, and she’s paying me a small fortune. That woman didn’t have to cast a spell on me.

This, my friends, it's related to the spell those two sisters put on Dean to make him fall in love with one of them. But... Takes those words and put it in Dean's mind. That applies perfectly to Castiel and him. Because CAS DIDN'T NEED TO PUT ANY SPELL ON HIM, BECAUSE CAS IS GORGEOUS AND POWERFUL, AND DEAN IS IN LOVE WITH HIM, FREELY IN LOVE WITH HIS ANGEL.

Another little foreshadows were implied in the conversation between Naomi and Castiel.

First of all, Castiel is able to snap at her what she did to him in season 8, as a growth of character. But, let's point at the little clues...

After talking about the few angels alive, which bring the huge crisis in Heaven, that will be solve by Jack as the new god at the end of the show, we had a foreshadow for 'souls walking the Earth' that will open season 14.

Naomi: Without him, in time we’ll burn out. Heaven will crumble, and all the souls that have been entrusted to our care will fall back to earth. Picture it, Castiel-- billions upon billions of ghosts unleashed upon the world. All that chaos, all that death.

And then, in our noses, Naomi is telling us the show was about to end...

Naomi: Everything ends, Castiel.

Cas: Everything ends.

To Conclude:

This episode had it all, sexual innuendo, fan service and clues to decipher the incoming season and also the end of the show.

Ooh so who's going to die? The title of episode 18 is "Bring 'em Back Alive" and the episode 19 is called "Funeralia"... and episode 20 is called "Unfinished Business".

13.18, as far as I know we don’t have confirmation on the writer yet (could be John Bring or possibly Bobo Berens, but either way...)

13.19 is probably written by Steve Yockey, and that title “Funeralia” seems to go nicely hand in hand with his first offering this season, aka 13.05 “Advanced Thanatology.”

I remember last season we laughed because after the first two Yockey episodes, we were laying bets that the third episode by him would complete the pattern, i.e. there was an unknown person’s full name in the episode title (12.06 Celebrating the Life of Asa Fox, 12.10 Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets, and 12.20 Twigs & Twine & Tasha Banes). So this season Yockey’s theme seems to be death... or at least his first and third episodes. That leaves 13.12 “Various and Sundry Villains” as the outlier, and it makes me wonder why.

12.10 Fan Appreciation post

Annnd here I am again, providing a recap of @elizabethrobertajones  wonderful

12x10 watching notes

While last time it was because her notes just tickled the life out of me, this time it is because I read her meta AFTER so may others - and I think she managed to capture almost all of the things so many of us are saying about this last episode. So this time it isn’t so much all the “funny bits”  - although those are in there too - but because reading through her highlights nicely aggregates what I’m seeing as almost everyone’s responses to the show. THIS time, I’m using her play by play to add all MY meta about watching, and appreciating, the fandom...appreciating this episode.

Read on for my play by play fandom meta of @elizabethrobertajones play by play of SPN 12.10 (warning metric 1/4 ton of spoilers).

Weirdly specific but excellent trope: immortal black ladies who have terrible impulse control around arcades. I’m going to be so sad when Lily kills her. {STOP WRITING COOL, POWERFUL WOC AND THEN KILLING THEM OFF}

[kind of sad we already know she’s called Lily because even though Lily Sunder is an incredible name, I wanted to call her Eyepatch Lady and I don’t have to] {We all really liked Lily and the eyepatch was doing it for us and CHARLIE IN THE VIDEO GAME OMG the parallels}

I don’t like this new trend of Sam and Dean actually communicating and talking about their shit. This is awful. Can we go back to them not talking about anything? {SPN fandom culture shock - actual normal/healthy communication. We struggle to cope, but are LOVING the struggle.}

Dean is going to CRASH THE CAR. Sam’s breaking point is Dean literally rotating 180 degrees in his seat to talk back at Cas. :P {OMG this moment had us ALL arm flailing - CAS sass made Dean forget Baby! Cas is more important to Dean than BABY! *panic*}

Aaand the info about Benjamin and his vessel has officially murdered me, especially as he’s already dead. :< Angel/human friendships! *flails emotionally* *flops over and slowly slides off my chair* *resumes watching from the floor because of Cas staring at Benjamin’s wings* {”Friends” - OMG the Destiel meta exploded...more arm flailing}

“If I plan to do anything else stupid, I’ll let you know” - I honestly did not think it was possible to love Cas more than I already did but he keeps on proving me wrong. {Cas sass. At. Dean. It was a thing this episode. A thing of beauty.}

Cas is catching up on what feels like a 3 year backlog of angry squinting {LOLOLOLOL - I didn’t realize this until she pointed it out. But oh yeah, squinting sass.}

Ahahaha Sam no. (Please keep Sam-ing like this. You are the Sam I love so very much :P) {So done Sam was so done repeatedly in this episode. LOTS of Sam as 3rd wheel/peacemaker commentary from all of us.}

“My friends who don’t listen very well” *Dean smirks at Cas* Okay, but I’m taking a screencap of that to use as like, a phone background or something. {OMG that smirk, and the three-men-on-a-bench scene overall...collective sigh and massive giffing.}

Well, home will still be very snarky and passive aggressive when he lives there but at least it will feel like HIS snarky passive-aggressive hunter-filled home. {I LOVE this description of the bunker. And we all cheered Cas clearly sticking around in the bunker - despite the PA fighting with Dean.}

Not surprisingly, Ishim then gets attacked and lightly stabbed. (that was a pun. Because angels bleed light - I’ll show myself out) {no, no, I LIKE puns...don’t stop}

idk how the casting went for this but it was probably “can you do Cas’s Eyebrow” {LOLOL  Lots of love for this actress and the wardrobe dept.’s decisions.}

Ishim just confirmed all the spec that this is a human marrying an angel and I’m contemplating going out to stand in the rain and shriek into the sky {snip}. Rain is great, when you need to shriek :P {Yeah, LOTS of happy meta/speculation over angel marriage in this episode.}

It’s times like this I remember the translation to the angel tablet is just sitting in the bunker in a language Cas can read and I need to go shriek in the rain some more {I KNOW right? I mean who says that nephilim are inherently BAD? Is it even ON the tablet? Or was it just some Admin angel’s stupid human-hating rules?}

I think it’s stopped raining so if I need to shriek I don’t know where to go {pat, pat.}

Sam you fucking third wheel master level dork. He’s been mediating so many fights that even when he’s in the middle of one as a participant he takes on this role :P {This has been a favorite gifset  -  I’ve seen it, and enjoyed it, repeatedly. Oh, and I’m going to use “master-level dork” in conversation as soon as possible.}

Heh, Sam’s being left with Lily and Dean goes to check on Cas. What a wild surprise. {djtmusings fanfic/meta prompt - If SAM had gone to Cas instead, would Isham have threatened to cut HIM out? And would Sam have used the angel sigil? Discuss.}

I did the “AAH OTP INTERACTING” fist pump when Dean rushed over to Cas all urgent and worried, and now Dean’s just… like. Holding Cas. Help. I think I dislocated a finger making frantic handwaving :P - My arm legit really hurts. {Yeah, that was something of a medical epidemic in fandom...}

HOLY CRAP then Dean picks CAS over banishing Ishim when he shows Cas is Dean’s weakness too i ...am probably burning my dinner in the oven {Ditto fandom - although the meal varied around the globe}

LOOK AT MY BEAUTIFUL BLOODSTAINED SON {Yes. Let’s.}

“I’m not mad I’m worried” Oh man all this stuff in the main text sucks because I deduced this back at the start through clever analysis of their dialogue and now what I can tell from this line is that… Dean is worried about Cas. {Ha, ha, joke’s on you, the writers chose NOT to be subtextual - more OMG actual communicating and we all slid out of our chairs into puddles.}

Can’t believe Dean and Cas are married. {Said every. fan. on. my. dash.}

"Lily Sunder Has Some Regrets" really is the thesis for how to write Sam's POV in Destiel fics. He is not constantly thinking about or shipping them. In fact, he would rather never have to think about them. He is exhausted by them. He understands how both of them are and he gets it, but there are literally people dying and he really doesn't have the time nor the energy for it. And he knows the day Dean and Cas finally use their words will only be one brief moment of rest before they become a whole new brand of unbearable.
