remembering that Eric Heisserer wanted to do Six of Crows from the beginning but netflix bought the rights to just shadow and bone, he said he'd only be involved if he could do Six of Crows, then netflix bought the rights to everything and said do both. again said "do both" in s2. so uhhh it really looks like they're penalizing the cast & crew for a decision THEY made lmao

today i love the red metal crane in her long neck arching her body over the boston skyline, which means i am okay for a moment. when i am unwell, everything is a little ugly. i always tell myself look for the beauty but when it is bad, i will look at birds and sunsets and little ducklings and feel absolutely nothing.
when my brother got his puppy, i was in a deep depression. what kind of monster isn't affected by a puppy. i was gentle and kind to her - i just didn't have an emotional reaction. she's five now and i feel like i spend all of our interactions apologizing to her - i don't know why. i just didn't feel anything. how embarrassing. i feel like if i admit that, i'll seem cruel and jaded. it comes in waves. like, two months ago when i went out into the world - it was like that. life behind a pane of stormglass. a firework could go off over your head - nothing. like dead skin, no reaction. not to ice cream or rainbows or baby chickens. life foggy and uninteresting.
i love goslings again. i love their little webbed feet splayed over grass. i love good food and live music and long walks. i like puppies. i feel like some kind of my soul has been starved - i keep staring at everything with wide eyes, trying to burrow the sensation into my stomach. it's real. beauty is real. when it's bad again, remember this. i stop and smell the flowers, feeling cliche in the moment. i like the white-to-red ombre of my neighbor's roses. i like colorcoding and yoga and cold drinks. i try to pass my hands over every moment, feeling like i'm squeezing joy out of every instant. remember this. for the love of god, it's real - just remember this.

Charles reacting to Edwin’s insufferable flirting now that he’s getting comfortable with himself: Look at you, getting fresh with a rugby lad. You kiss one bloke and now you think you're smooth as :P
Edwin: One that you know of. It’s a growing list, do you want to get on it?

3 Body Problem *spoilers*
There are pickles, snags, muddles, and problems. Then there are problems concerning three bodies. This would be the latter.
But problems, three-body or otherwise, can escalate into full-blown conundrums. And that is just what we have for you this Thursday, March 28, in the form of these Spotlight interviews with Zine Tseng and Rosalind Chao, and John Bradley and Alex Sharp, all four of 3 Body Problem fame, who were subject to a myriad of tough questions. The dark forest theory? Could Jason Momoa solve the #3 body problem? Ways that the first season does not end? And what would the ideal three-course meal one could put together to pair with a viewing of 3 Body Problem?

For anyone confused by the new Castlevania animated series trailer, after seeing Trevor be fully martial for four seasons, you have to understand that there's a spectrum of how magical any given Belmont is.
You can call it the Richter scale.

Netflix's 3 Body Problem
I tried watching Netflix’s American adaptation of Three Body problem. I watched five episodes and boy, is it painful.
(Full disclaimer: I really liked the Chinese adaptation by Tencent, I read the book after I watched the drama, and I am a European of Chinese descent, so I am definitely biased.)
The general whitewashing and westernization of the story is already pretty bad. Why take a Chinese story if you’re going to make it so blandly American?
Everyone is horny and thinks about sex, relationships based on ideals are reduced to attraction and sex. Everyone is so vulgar and crass. IQ seems very low.
Ye Wenjie. What did they do to Ye Wenjie. She’s a brainless horny fanatic woman now. And Shen Yufei is replaced by a generic unhinged lady. All the scientists seem supremely dumb.
White characters explain or emphasize things in Chinese, for Chinese people, when their Mandarin is bad. Not gibberish bad, but still pretty bad. Please just use English, your white actors clearly can’t speak Chinese. Your Chinese characters can understand and speak English. Don’t hurt our ears like this. It might be cool and exotic for the average Western audience who doesn't understand Mandarin but it’s cringe and painful for us.
A small thing but since I lost my father a few months ago, it struck me pretty hard. What was that altar in Clarence Shi’s house? Just two big pricey candles and one stick of incense? This is so cold and lifeless. Where is the FOOD??? The drinks??? The flowers/plants??? You're calling your wife and you're leaving her starving and depressed!
Tumblr media
(For info, a normal small home ancestor altar should look more like this. As you can see : FOOD. Take care of your ancestors!)
The cast and setting is supposed to make this adaptation more "international"...but two British dudes decide everything when, in the novel and the Chinese adaptation, it is truly an international decision and an example of global cooperation. Five Oxford alumni of different skin color does not make this more international!
And so so so so many more things that are wrong. I feel like there is not a single Chinese brain cell in this.
All in all, I did not expect anything good, but I am still disappointed. It is so bland. No build-up. No mystery. No menace. No ambiance. Nothing. Everything is said straight to your face. They must think the audience is stupid, I guess.
Watch the Chinese adaptation
Did you like the ideas behind the Three Body Problem, either the book or the Netflix series? Are you ok with reading subtitles and watching something not in your language? Are you ok with seeing something set in another culture, with another culture's codes, not simplified and westernized for your sake? Are you ok with not being able to binge-watch it in one weekend? Are you ok with more complex characters, a slower-paced plot? Then try the Chinese adaptation. It's on Youtube and Viki, with subtitles. Legal and free.

Local big sister experiences emotions, more at 6
Been wanting to do one of these with Lauren for AGES, but I never got round to it. Then I saw the Lydia and Phinium expression sheets on @littledigits’ website and I felt inspiration like never before.
The funniest struggle I have with Lauren’s design right now is that she nose too big for she got damn face. Literally, Hilda characters noses take up a fairly small portion of their faces, and her’s took up WAY too much, leaving little room for her to make facial expressions. But I struggled to find a fix because when I made the nose smaller it just didn’t look like Lauren anymore, so I took this as an opportunity to work on that!
Tumblr media
She still has a larger nose than most characters, starting higher up (like her grandad!) and ending lower down (but not quite as low as before). I also made her eyes a little smaller and with a shape similar to Lydia’s (though you can see in some of these I hadn’t quite landed on that yet and her eyes are a bit too big), which works both as a nod to her parentage and because I think it makes the nose look bigger. This still doesn’t leave as much room for the mouth as most other characters, but that’s okay — Lauren is a very private person who keeps her feelings close to her chest, I think it works for her to have subtler expressions, adds to how guarded she is! Oh and I also updated the shape of her hair slightly, just to make it a bit more style accurate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
These changes are pretty small on their own, but I think combined they work well to make Lauren feel a lot more…alive? Far less stiff, anyway. I think she also has a more unique facial structure now, instead of just “what if Johanna was 90% nose”. She’s still got a big old nose and I love it but now she can emote, yay!
This is really all just concept stuff, I’m hoping to get a new fullbody style-ref for Lauren out soon! Now that I’ve improved the main issues I had with her face in the last ref, now it’s onto the silhouette! I want her to read as more of a strong character (though it comes across decently in her current ref, I wanna push it more without being as exaggerated as Ahlberg, which is. A challenge for me lol), streamline her silhouette, and finally make her taller than Johanna like she’s always meant to have been <3 I made her shorter for so long because I thought it would help her read better as her daughter but you know what? That’s dumb actually, she’s tall.
ANYWAYS, thank you for listening in on the annual Lauren redesign, and to the artists behind the show for posting so much amazing inspiring show stopping concept work for free because it makes my autism worse /pos

I don't think people realize how much learning Edwin had to do after escaping Hell
the whole ass 2nd World War and Vietnam War
lots of fucking countries gained independence or lost it during that time
UK decolonialisation (I know this is basically the same as the last one but I need to make it very clear. Colonies were a thing during his alive-time. Britain had lots of colonies)
He got out in the middle of the fucking COLD WAR
every discovery made during that time (including a motherfucking nuclear weapon)
Stonewall riots!!!
The classic Doctor Who was released
Hobbit and Lord Of The Rings were published
(if I forgot something please let me know)
Like, this diva escaped from Hell and probably got his whole knowledge debunked and he had to relearn everything
And then the disintergration USSR and he has another 15 countries to learn

Taking a book written by a Chinese author, set in China, about Chinese characters and adapting it into a TV show set in the UK about British characters. It's certainly a choice.

My one serious gripe with Gyeongseong Creature is that there are two different languages being spoken in this show, and the subtitles are doing nothing to indicate that. This is a story set during the Japanese occupation of Korea. There are both Japanese and Korean characters and they constantly code switch between languages to indicate status, class, and true loyalties. Sometimes the switches are subtle and fast, and if your ear is not well-trained enough in the differences between Korean and Japanese you can easily miss it. This is relevant for both character and plot, so it’s a pretty egregious oversight from Netflix.
