Fujimotos use of Body language and how it tells us EVERYTHING we need to know.
[Minor spilers ahead]
We need to talk about the art in chainsawman, because I feel like it's hardly ever addressed and it's one of those things that could easily get lost in adaption with the anime coming out this summer. The way Fujimoto priorities SHOWING emotion over telling it, is in my opinion, under appreciated and under utilized in modern manga. And I'm going to prove it. At this point its almost a running joke. That every Shonen manga in existence will have the main character loudly declared his beliefs and goals to every person he meets. Stuff like "I do this for my freinds/You have angerd me!! I will make you pay" but fujimoto dosnt do that at all. In fact he actively avoids it by having his characters and often Denji deflect from there emotions or hide and mis interpret them all together.
We all joke at this panel because it comes OFF as a joke. Denji who has just finished a kill on a devil man is distracted by porn mags. Haha but is that really what's going on in this panel? No. Sure denji goes on to make seeing/ touching boobs his goal but is that really thr only thing that he wanted? Well no. In fact when denji GETS the thing he claimed to want hes..dissatisfied, left to ponder if it was even worth it .until he meets makima again he doesn't even want anything to do kissing, relationships, or even boobs, they dont even cross his mind at this point. So what else DID he want I'm this panel. Fujimoto doesn't shove it in our mouths via big rallying speach - but he dose still give us the answer. In context this frame happens right after Denji makes the choice to kill a devil man for the first time. A devil man. The same thing denji is. Not only is denji also a devil man but by the empty dirty apartment full of porn mags its extremely clear that this devil man was probably completely alone, poor, and without direction. A very simulare lifesryle that denji has lived in all his life. He was faced with a reflection of his own self and told to slit its throat. He does. With hesitstion of course but one that he quickly covers up by grabbing a couple of porn mags and complaing that "he didn't want blood on the magz". The whole place is full of magazines. Personally I don't think Denji would have been that picky. But denji never openly admits his complicated feelings on this event. Instead he tells himself "I want to touch some boobs". Now in Denjis case it's clear that his gut reaction to deflect from his feelings may not even be something he's aware of. Denji knows he wants SOMETHING (a better life) but he dosnt know WHAT so he process then best as he can. His body language shows us that hes struggling. Hes hunched over almost hugging himslef in comfort, eyes cast down, despite the joke he shows no sign of lauging. Denji is a character who struggles with even understanding his own internal struggles. Not only is this a great way to show how fujimotos art direction lends to the narrative but it also shows great character decision. Denji hides his feelings because he canot process them. Unlike other characters such as Makima, Aki , and Reze who actively hide there emotions while knowing exactly what they want. Which is also shown through Fujimotos art, through misdirection, subtle body language, and even specifically placed eye contact.
Despite the proud talk from the man Makima in this panel isn't the losing party. We know this even befor the fight begins. Not because of diologe but because of her composure. Calm. Collected. Amused even. Surrounded by enemies who would have no qualms of killing her. Her gaze just as unflinching as his yet far more relaxed.
Then we have rezes moments. Moments where she realizes something. But doesn't comment on it.
Her expression is that of controlled surprise. She knows something isn't right. But she's choosing not to comment on it.
Even when she does decide to speak to Denji about it (despite her best interest not to) she still holds an air of controlled silence. Her face completely hidden except for a still smile. The panels flipping between denjis struggle to understand her questions and her still hidden reaction. Instead of explaining any more to denji or talking about her feelings. She changes the subject. She never says "oh this is awkward/ time to change the subject" she just does. The mood is tense ans uneasy And once you learn more about Reze that's when you understand why. She never tells us directly but for those who have finished the bomb arc well we have our answers...
As for aki. Even The cold cool calm collected REAL Shonen protag still has plenty to hide and plenty emotions to work through.
. After Angel tells him that he has loss years of his life just for saving Angel akis eyes immediately flash with regret. At first he's shocked and stares straight ahead. Then fujimoto brings even more attention to Akis eyes as aki begins to understand and come to terms with the Angles words. Finally. Regret tenses through his face and Aki says "I've had enough of watching people die in front of my eyes". These words seem sincere....but yet again aki is posing a contradiction. Aki is a devil hunter he has and will continue to see the people around him slaughterd daily. As long as he has his job he will continue to be followed by death. If it was really about not wanting to watch people die he would have quit after thus. And yet he doesn't. He stays. And spends a considerable amount of time with Angel after this. Despite his suffering and what it took to get here he has found something to belive in. And from Angel's body language we can assume the feeling is mutual. Angel is not naive to Akis decision and once again fijimoto focuses on the characters eyes. His body becomes lax and a sense of peace washed over his face. He is no longer fighting against Aki. In this panel both aki and Angel have found there reason to continue living yet they can't say those words outloud.
These aren't the only Show Dont Tell moments Fujimoto utilizes but they are some I wanted to point out. I really hope this kind of writing style sparks a bit of change in our current Shonen wave as it's one I enjoy a lot.
#both Vagabond and berzerk have utalised this writing/art direction in masterful ways#to be fair there are plenty of Shonen that have this kind of writing pepperd kn here and there#hell even BNA has its moments of this style#but its rare to see it so intertwined with the themes and arcs of the charcters#chainsaw man#csm#anime analysis#manga#long post#another REALLY big scene for this is the movie theater date with makima#but i dont want to spoil that for anyone in this post#could make a separate post about it later#chainsawman#Im REWRITNG THIS TONIGHT I HAVE MORE IDEAS HOLD ON

oh okay okay. I have so many questions but im gonna stick with this and its a weird question and its okay if you dont know / it was all a coincidence but in Behind Every Great Alpha (my favorite fic of yours! it's so good!) there's one line that mentions MJ's family was from Tulsa. Was that related in any way to the Tulsa race riots or did you just pick Tulsa cause you liked it? again if you dont know what I mean that's okay you don't even need to post this
(continuation of this ask)
Anon STOP I've been wanting someone to talk to me about this since I posted the fic. I just assumed even if people did clue in, it would never come up cause they wouldn't bother reaching out 😆 Anyway I've got (a really long) answer under the cut:
The line in question is this:
Michelle’s family had quite a bit of money; they had moved up to Magnolia Hill from Tulsa a few years ago and had been free for several generations before 1863 [Emancipation Proclamation].
Anon references the Tulsa Race Massacre in 1921. You can read more about that here.
The simple answer to anon's question is: sort of, but no.
The long answer is that the Tulsa Massacre is of course linked to Black success in Tulsa in the 19th and 20th century, so the massacre is in some sense related to what I talk about below.
Michelle's family moving to Ohio from Tulsa was actually centred around this article from Smithsonian Magazine's April issue this year (you'll notice the article is actually part of a feature on remembering Tulsa and the 1921 massacre.)
I hadn't known any of this until I read the article, but apparently Oklahoma was developing into a relatively egalitarian place pre-statehood. In the late 19th century, they were kind of the ideal place for people of colour to live; there is some interesting history described about Black and Native American relations but here's an excerpt about post-Civil-War life from the article:
During the Civil War, the Five Tribes sided with the Confederacy, but after the war most of the tribes, bound by new treaties with the federal government, granted formerly enslaved people citizenship, autonomy and a level of respect unheard of in the post-Reconstruction South. In the Creek and Seminole tribes, black tribal members farmed alongside Native Americans on communally owned land, served as justices in tribal governments, and acted as interpreters for tribal leaders in negotiations with the growing American empire.
[...]
Black Americans with no ties to the Five Tribes journeyed to Oklahoma on their own accord, attracted by the promise of equality on the frontier. Edward McCabe [...] founded a town exclusively for black settlers called Langston, promising his brethren in the South a utopia where “the colored man has the same protection as his white brother.” Ida B. Wells, the crusading journalist who dedicated her life to chronicling the scourge of lynching, visited Oklahoma in April 1892 and saw “the chance [black people] had of developing manhood and womanhood in this new territory.” There was truth to these proclamations. In pre-statehood Oklahoma, it was common for white and black children to attend the same schools as late as 1900. Black politicians held public office not only in tribal governments but also in Oklahoma Territory, the modern-day western half of the state. In the early days of Tulsa, black residents owned businesses in the predominantly white downtown district and even had white employees.
So Tulsa was a half-decent place. What went wrong? Oklahoma became a US state in 1907, which brought with it segregation and racist legislation. Black people at the time fought hard against statehood, and were under the impression that the federal government would back them but it didn't.
Now, I'm not saying I read one article and became an expert on Oklahoma statehood or race relations in 20th century middle-America or anything. But I did write the line pertaining to MJ's family history with this in mind.
Behind Every Great Alpha takes place in 1910. So I imagine MJ's family moved up to Ohio maybe in '06 or '07? Whenever it became clear that Oklahoma would definitively become a state and was gonna go the same direction as America. Maybe they had family in Ohio or Chicago or Canada they wanted to be close to and being far away was no longer worth it; Maybe moving north was just a little better / safer for them; maybe they really like the Great Lakes 🤷♀️ But essentially I didn't write that with the 1921 massacre in mind so much as the shift for Oklahoma statehood (though the massacre is linked, like all things, because that's how history goes 👀)
No but seriously anon thank so much for asking this ☺️☺️ There's lots of fun details in my writing that readers can pick up on from time to time (there's also lots of unexplained vague things that make no sense and I have no answer for 😳) so I'm happy to hear you noticed this detail ☺️☺️☺️

Asmus Tietchens
Asmus Tietchens — a name that popped up about 40 years ago for the first time on an album of ambient music by Cluster&Eno (1977) and can be found in various fields of electronic and experimental music ever since, mostly on the fringes of certain genres like industrial, synth-pop, acousmatic, reductionist electronic music or krautrock. It’s hard to fix his position to a specific scene, instead he seems more like a curious and peculiar mind working his way through all the spheres that catch his curiosity. Although he can be classified as a consistent solo-artist, quite a few collaborations have been exercised with people like the percussionist Jon Mueller, the reductionist electronic composer Richard Chartier, Chrysanthemums’ Terry Burrows or his duo Kon-takt der Jünglinge (a combination of titles of two early Stockhausen pieces) together with media-artist and composer Thomas Koener. He also appears on an album by the ephemeral Krautrock band-project Liliental (one of the few records featuring studio-wizard Conny Plank as a musician), probably the only real band he ever played in, not to mention his general dislike of most Krautrock.
— Marc Matter
But let’s start at the beginning: Asmus Tietchens was born in Hamburg (*1947), has lived there ever since, and works there mostly in the studio of his old friend Okko Bekker—a composer of filmscores and advertisments who also guest-starred on the Cluster & Eno album, but has also produced whole works together with Asmus, most notably a concept-album called E that contains succesful imitations of modern classical and avantgarde music. His attachment with the city of Hamburg is close: being a key-figure and a close inspiration to a younger generation of experimental electronic musicians such as Felix Kubin, who admired Tietchens as a kind of chinese master, a laughing monch, an existentialist audio-scientist leaning to impressionism who produces real science-fiction with his music. He also used to be involved in the infamous Odradek fanzine, has been rumored of being behind the mysterious Werkbund and Mechthild von Leusch projects together with Uli Rehberg aka Ditterich von Euler-Donnersperg (Tietchens repeatedly denied his participation) and still co-runs the monthly Hörbar events of experimental music in a small cinema (B-Movie). Even his dayjobs that he once had to execute for the sake of his parents’ peace were typical for Hamburg: trained as a tradesman working in the harbour and later being a copywriter in the advertising business.
Confronted with early german electronic avantgarde music and french musique concrete on the night-programs of germany’s state-radio as a 12-year old kid, because he somewhat felt obliged to follow the development of the arts as a grammar school student due to his vanity, this kind of music caught his curiosity. The idea to make music himself developed, and after giving it a try with guitar-playing which failed due to his left-handedness, he started tinkering around with splicing prerecorded tapes and doing random collages of found sound and music as a young teenager. In the mid-60s he systematisized his approach and got access to a Revox tape-machine, and his first piece of tape-music dates back to 1965. Making music continued as a hobby for 15 years, before getting the opportunity to make it public. The LP Formen letzter Hausmusik (transl. Last forms of family-music, 1984) that was released by Nurse With Wounds Steven Stapleton for his United Dairies label contained mostly material dating from the mid-70s. His active entry into the music-scene as a composer was via the industrial scene, not only releasing on the NWW label but also on Esplendor Geometrico’s later on, but he does not call his own music industrial: “like i have been on the fringes of industrial music in the 80s, i am nowadays working on the fringes of reductionist music” he tells me in a telephone interview. A period in his work as a composer that dates back to the early and mid 80s should not be forgotten—back then the german intellectual pop-magazine Spex (in the July 1985 issue) speculated that “atonal veteran Asmus Tietchens will never lose his reputation as a hippie-electronic (musician) because of his releases on the german Krautrock-label Sky”, although he still respects these records for what they are: synthie-pop.
While also some of his experimental pieces work with rhythms and repetitive patterns, his current compositions however are rather abstract, sparse and stern, a music not easy to access but starring an idiosyncratic beauty; they explore very subtle differences in tone, texture and sound while not hesitating to use silence as an element. He is more and more interested in nuances: “an unattentive listener could gain the impression when listening to an eight minute piece that nothing is happening here” he remarks. After starting out with tape-collages and going through phases of synthesized music and a long period of mixing both, he is back to pure electronic sound: “nowadays i hardly work with concrete sound-material like field-recordings anymore, but use synthetic sounds”. Nevertheless, two of Tietchens relatively recent radiopieces that he composed for the WDR Ars-Acustica broadcast series exclusively use concentrated field-recordings: Trois Dryades is based on microscopic recordings of a tree that is cut, and Sechs Heidelberger Studien on recordings of an old Heidelberger printing-machine. Both were awarded with the Karl-Sczuka Price for Radio- Art in 2003 and 2006. Unlike other artists who start out radical only to become tamed by habit, his musical abstraction and quaintness increased over time and moreover his curiosity lead him into different genres and styles without losing a certain kind of handwriting.
Some of Asmus Tietchens recordings display a twisted sort of humor: an LP of seemingly lost tapes by german hardrock band The Scorpions trying out some electronic Krautrock (of course NOT produced by The Scorpions but by Tietchens in collaboration with Felix Kubin aka Knoth and Tim Buhre as Spiders on Phasing), or the Aroma Club series containing bizarre synth-pop with matching artwork are funny though sarcastic examples of his broad approach to electronic music and his playful mocks on musical trends and genres. In some of these projects he uses pseudonyms which happen to be anagrams based on his real name like Tussi Schemante or Achim Stutessen. Artwork and album- or tracktitles (which are, beside a few exceptions, all in german) are further dimensions in Tietchens records in which a jejune kind of humor can be found in homeopathic doses, but besides of that, he considers his music to lack humor. It might be a specific critical sensitivity and playfulness within the way he approaches music, art and life, making him more of a dandy-noir (more in a spiritual sense instead of a blasé fashion-attitude) than a tongue-in-cheek ironymonger.
Asmus Tietchens doesnt mind to talk about his music before his performances, and he is a great talker. He is also a gifted writer of critical essays on experimental music or linernotes for records by Cluster, Günther Schickert or Institut fuer Feinmotorik that contain remarkable literary qualities. However, he considers his music a music without words, a kind of ‘absolute music’—a concept dating back to mid-19th centuries hardcore romanticism—a music that is absolutely self-sufficient, that is not ‘about’ or ‘stands for’ something but for itself, that does not intend to provoke specific thoughts or feelings amongst the listeners (he is a diligent listener of his own music by the way)—in that way being as open for interpretation as it can get: “i have no messages to spread, and i dont know to whom i should adress those”. But nevertheless, he can’t help but stick to his habit to include a quotation of the thinker of extreme pessimism EM Cioran on each record since Seuchengebiete (transl. Pestilence Fields, 1985); thats because he really wants to share those aphorisms—not because he wants to entertain the listener, but to show what intellectual influences he bears. Thus he is not reflecting a worldview or philosophical convictions through his art, “there’s still some philosophical background noise that inspires the music”. Therefore it does not surprise that he characterises his music of the last 20 years—without any evaluation—as “an attempt to establish a maximal ‘human-distance’”
