Sundayā€™s worldview sucks, his outlook and perception of himself and others sucksā€¦ and thatā€™s why heā€™s so interesting
In honor of his drip marketing releasing tonight (or maybe yesterday for you depending on when I get this out), Iā€™d like to talk about why I think Sundayā€™s beliefs and perspective is very, very flawed and how his own biases rather than the actions of those who oppose him are what led to his downfall.
Sunday is entirely responsible for his own failure, and thatā€™s exactly why heā€™s incredible.
This contains mentions of leaks and spoilers for the Penacony quest lineā€¦ you have been warned
To start with, oh my lord do Sundayā€™s preconceived notions kick him in the ass.Ā
I think the best example of this is his conversation with Dr. Ratio in which Ratio pretends to betray Aventurine, selling out his plan to Sunday. Now, whatā€™s incredibly interesting about this exchange is that Ratio doesnā€™t fully lie to Sunday once in this exchange, rather he says half truths and makes vague statements which Sunday himself interprets as being in support of him.Ā
Take what Ratio said the whole, ā€œA scholar knows their position and wouldnā€™t forsake it for the sake of petty pride.ā€ In retrospect, we know this line is actually referring to Aventurine- aka Ratio is saying heā€™s not just going to sell him out to Sunday for the sake of information about the Stellaron (which he would get anyways if the IPC attained Penacony, plus Mr. Incredibly Dedicated Knowledge Spreader probably has other means of gaining it then through The Family).Ā
However, since Ratio answered the invitation Sunday gave him, Sunday assumes that Ratio is on his side, believes his cause is righteous, and that he won Ratio over with offering him information about the Stellaron, therefore making that previous statement of Ratioā€™s null, because Sunday interpreted it as, ā€œconvince me this is worth my time + prove to me youā€™re correct,ā€ when it really meant, ā€œthere is no way in hell Iā€™m about to sacrifice my friend to you, and there is nothing you could offer me to make me do so you crazed lunatic.ā€
But why did Sunday not weigh the options? Why did he unquestioningly believe his perception of the situation was the correct one?
Well- partly itā€™s because Ratio and Aventurine were doing their damndest to make it seem like they hate each other and that their plan was going off the rails.
But the more important part is that even without Ratio saying a word or even accepting the invitation, Sunday already believes heā€™d be on his side.Ā
Let me demonstrate this through Sunday's perspective:
I am a righteous person, I am doing the correct things, my worldview is the correct one. Dr. Ratio is also a righteous person who seems to be doing the correct things. Therefore, since we are both on the side of good, and Aventurine is clearly not on that side considering his status as Stoneheart and his negative relationship to Ratio, then Ratio will naturally want to be on my side. After all, the good guys work together, do they not?- and together will vanquish this evil villain.
This perspective is a simple one, but Sundayā€™s unshaking belief (up until the end of 2.2) that he is 100% in correct and in the right, that any and everyone who he also perceives to be in the right (like Ratio) would believe/side with him without truly needing to be convinced. Sunday doesnā€™t come out the gate offering the Stellaron information- he only keeps it as a backup just in case.Ā
However, this is complicated because Sunday is also not an idiot, and heā€™s extremely paranoid, so heā€™s going to make sure that the way he views the world is 100% correct on the off chance heā€™s wrong which could foil his plans- which is why he invited Ratio in the first place. Nevertheless, this isnā€™t him hunting for new perspectives, but rather him desiring to prove himself right again, which is a bad thing because Sunday is very much not right.Ā
A perfect world is a perfect pris- *gets shot*
Reference that approximately 2 Ā½ people will get beside, Sundayā€™s ideology that he is fully confident in.. sucks. It sucks ass, itā€™s terrible, and let me explain.
Iā€™m not going to try going over all the little intricacies to how the dreamscape works because I a) donā€™t know and b) donā€™t particularly care because they arenā€™t relevant to the argument I will be making- which is that Sundayā€™s ideology is inherently flawed and immediately falls apart under scrutiny.
Essentially, he desires to create the perfect fake reality, enveloping the whole galaxy in Enaā€™s dream and fulfilling their every desire and whim within it, with himself as the sacrifice to allow it to exist. The seven rest days, no illness, no pain, no challenge, you get the idea.Ā
And, this perfect world paradoxically sucks ass because of its perfectness.
Improving society is great, eliminating hardship is great, increasing quality of life is great.
But declawing reality itself- absolutely not.
Iā€™m going to try to explain this through my favorite strangely specific anecdote- the process of obtaining diamonds in Minecraft.
Stay with me now.
You essentially have two options- go out and mine them yourselves the hard way, which takes hours, gives you less diamonds per the amount of time spent on it, and likely with you exhausting some of your resources like food, torches, and tools which you will need to replenish.
Or.
You can just.. get them from creative mode or commands, and you can get as many as your heart desires.
However, despite the fact that option one is harder, gives you less diamonds and takes significantly more time, I, as well as hopefully you, would pick it every time (at least in a survival world, although honestly idk why you would even need pure diamonds in creative).
And thatā€™s because the first option is rewarding.Ā
You did not earn the diamonds you easily and magically summoned into your inventory, there is no struggle, no journey, no challenge to it, therefore it feels entirely unremarkable, as compared to the feeling you (hopefully) get from mining diamonds, which makes you happy because you earned it. Yeah, it was harder, but the process itself is fun- the anticipation of not knowing when youā€™re going to find them, if at all, the danger, the fighting and digging and mauvering you will have to do in the process.
And with this unconventional example, the fatal flaw with Sundayā€™s ideology is revealed- itā€™s boring.Ā
Itā€™s boring as shit.
Yeah, for the first few months or even years it might be enjoyable- having everything you could ever want served on a silver platter. However, humans are a) inherently a bit greedy and b) desire challenge, and this scenario fulfilles neither of those things. Naturally having everything means your desire for more can never be fulfilled, leaving the wanter forever unsatisfied, whereas in the real world, things are truly out of your reach, meaning that even if you never end up getting them, they are still a tangible thing just out of reachā€¦ as strange at it sounds, we like being tantalilus-ed more than you think. After all, if what you want is so easy to get, you will never run out of things to want, and eventually that gets draining.Ā
Continually, if everything is easy, if everything is just right there whenever you want it- existence itself no longer has stakes.Ā
And thatā€™s the problem, because much like how a story with no stakes is extremely hard to find compelling, a life with no stakes feels boring at best and downright pointless and meaningless at worst.
Iā€™m just saying, there is a reason why the Nihility was such a strong presence and problem in Penacony.
Anyways, like with the diamond problem, a lack of stakes means that nothing you do feels rewarding, because you didnā€™t truly earn it.Ā
Which is where the Sundayā€™s idea of a ā€œperfectā€ reality falls apart, because the most enjoyable reality for humans to live in is not one literally devoid of any possible flaw.
So why does he believe in it? When itā€™s so clearly flawed?
Well, itā€™s because Sunday doesnā€™t think a better alternative exists.
The world made you this way.. and you chose to continue what it started.
Iā€™m sure I donā€™t need to repeat the story of the Charmony Dove all over again because trust me, weā€™ve all heard it before. Nonetheless, it reveals something important both about Sundayā€™s personality and his ideology- heā€™s fundamentally a defeatist.
He doesnā€™t believe that there is any alternative for the dove, that it could ever be able to fly again with its deformed nature, so instead of being ā€œcruelā€ and letting it ā€œinevitably fall to its death,ā€ heā€™d rather keep it in a cage all its life where it has no freedom, but at least it would he alive and ā€œhappyā€.
And this is where his defeatism reveals itself- Sunday doesnā€™t believe reality itself can get better because improving it when there are so many factors and things out of your control is hard at best and impossible at worst. Therefore, he resorts to creating an escapist, false version of it- a perfect golden cage, because constructing that is far, far easier than trying to help the dove fly again.Ā
The universe has endless possibilities, if Robin and Sunday had tried hard enough, they probably could have found a solution. Sure, they were both children, so the capabilities necessary to even attempt that were likely far out of their reach. However, it was still possible, but Sunday doesnā€™t believe in possibilities- he believes heā€™s right above all else, which is where that stubbornness and arrogance comes into play again.
Sunday doesnā€™t think better solutions than his exists, and he believes everyone would could possibly stand in his noble way are either villains, or horribly misguided; so itā€™s his job to show them the light.
This is why he lets the Express Crew + Firefly try to change his mind- Sunday wasnā€™t actually interesting in shifting his perspective, or really what they wanted to say. Rather, he just wanted to let them say there peace, because well, Sundayā€™s a good, righteous person (at least from his perspective), and good, righteous people listen to others. Good, righteous people will let these poor, ignorant souls offer their foolish words before exposing them to the harsh truth- or at least thatā€™s how Sunday sees it.Ā
Moreover, this also explains his arrogance. If he believes his worldview is the sole correct one, then why listen to anyone else? Heā€™s this world's savior, or at least heā€™s been raised to believe that- so why not relish in it? He enjoys punishing Aventurine, enjoys the bastard who stood in the way of Sundayā€™s plans, shrinks away in ā€œdefeatā€ and get what he ā€œdeserves.ā€ Despite how miserable it sounds, Sunday also takes pride in having to be a martyr to bring about his beautiful dream. The belief that he is a selfless, good person is a selfish desire of his, even if a genuine one, and itā€™s what leads to his downfall.
Sunday could have actually listened. He could have reevaluated his loss to Aventurine and realized it was not through the others clever deception, but through his own biases. He could have actually taken the Expressā€™s and Fireflyā€™s advice. He could have looked for other avenues to help the people he truly does care about.Ā
Despite Gopher Woodā€™s manipulation- Sundayā€™s decision to go forward with the pain is entirely his own, because he truly believes- even with all the evidence for the contrary- that he is correct.
And thatā€™s why he fails. Not because of the Express. Not because of Ratio. Not because of Aventurine. Not because of Gopher, or even the rest of The Family.
No, Sunday fails because he is flawed, and he is wrong, and he is the arrogant, selfish and biased one, and his worldview is wrong.
So what now?
This might have seemed like I think Sunday is pure evil and irredeemable, but I think itā€™s quite the opposite.
He has very good intentions, and he does genuinely care about it the well being of other people around him. He gives Aventurine a chance to prove his innocence, even if he never intended on changing, he does listen to what the Express + Firefly have to say. He pauses when Robin shows up, as sheā€™s the one person (until the very end) heā€™s actually willing to accept the perspective of. The whole reason he ended up here in the first place is because Gopher Wood twisted Sundayā€™s good intentions into a fatal arrogance and utmost belief in a flawed worldview.Ā
However, what really sells me on Sundayā€™s goodness is when eyes widen at that final moment, the light draining from him as he realizes he is wrong.Ā
And once Sunday realizes he is wrong, those flaws that bind him can finally be examined and improved upon, as they all stem from that worldview he no longer believes in.Ā
His whole life, Sunday has been enacting out someone elseā€™s plan for him, even if heā€™s come to internalize it over time, at the end of the day- it was never his, and without it, heā€™s empty.
Which is exactly why the only place he can go now is the Express, and the only thing left for him is redemption and growth.
Dan Heng is right- Sunday has a noble soul, and now that he has stopped believing in himself, heā€™s no longer shackled by the past either. Improvement or utter demise (in a likely nihility-flavored manner) are his only options remaining.
I understand a lot of people want to see him become a Stellaron Hunter, but imo, that just does nothing for him. Heā€™d still be following someone elseā€™s path/script, and Mr. I Will Sacrifice My Whole Existence To Become The Sun To Illuminate These Wandering Souls probably wouldnā€™t be so on board with the whole.. terrorism part of being a SH. Like yeah, they are our friends (kinda), but they absolutely kill innocent people and cause millions of dollars in property damage to people who donā€™t deserve it.Ā
Also, being on the Express Just Makes Sense. This is a game about choices, a game about accepting the mistakes of your past, but not letting them define you in order to move on and forge a better future for yourself and others- with the Astral Express + Trailblaze as a concept being the literal embodiment of it. Thereā€™s a reason when you switch to the Trailblazerā€™s POV in stories, it includes Kafkaā€™s most important words to us- ā€œWhen you have the chance to make a choice, make one you wonā€™t regret.ā€
Therefore, I hope the choices Sunday will make in 2.7 are ones heā€™s proud of, and I canā€™t wait to see how exactly they get him on board with the crew, because there still is a LOT of development he needs to do before then.Ā
Anyways, thank you so much for reading, and if you have any thoughts Iā€™d love to hear them. This was a stream of consciousness mess, but I hope it was still valuable nonetheless! Also if you are reading this on the day it was written, I hope we donā€™t get disappointed by his drip marketing!

I love how people are only ever interested in defending Arya's right to be weird-looking. It's never defending her intelligence from people who claim she's incapable of thinking for herself, highlighting her importance to the plot and refusing to see her as just a prop, acknowledging how much of her story gets stolen and given to other characters, talking about her trauma or how often it gets erased and overlooked, seeing her as more than just an attack dog/bodyguard, etc. Nope. It's just a "why can't people let Arya be ugly/unconventional looking? :(" post every other week because people are, for whatever reason, obsessed with how Arya is visually perceived. One of the most misinterpreted characters yet the issue is only ever with her being portrayed as "too pretty" or the wrong "type" of pretty. This fandom will entirely rewrite a character's motivations, values, and role in the story to the point that they consider references to canon "hate" but! The true injustice to canon is we acknowledge that she is described as pretty several times. Arya simply existing as her pretty, important, and non-conforming self is too complex and confusing for people to comprehend ļæ½ļæ½.
#arya stark#asoiaf#fandom nonsense#how can Arya be considered pretty?! she's literally non-conforming?? being pretty belongs to /feminine/ female characters...right? šŸ˜±#I feel like these people tell on themselves with how much they value beauty because they make it /such/ a big deal#when her self-esteem issues regarding being a lady are infinitely more relevant to her story (and more interesting to discuss)#her being mocked for having the Stark look is a supporting story element that also reinforces her being an outcast considering#her mother + all of her trueborn siblings have a southern look and she was raised with southern standards#not to mention her non-conformity and often messy appearance heavily impacted how her looks were perceived#George writes Arya's non-conformity as parallel to traditional femininity so it makes sense that beauty is one of those aspects he subverts#(also why it makes sense that her future includes accepting her identity as a Lady while redefining the role but that's off topic)#this is why you need to look at the writing instead of judging based on the /type/ of character you think Arya is#and! it's truly not that serious šŸ˜ I'm sure it will be a plot point eventually but it's not 98% of her story like these people pretend#Arya is such an interesting + well-written character but we constantly get people rewriting her and nonsense discourse around her looks#such rich material and all you can say is that she's an /odd-looking feral gremlin/ and I'm supposed to take your opinion seriously#at this point the obsession with Arya being /weird/ looking has to be some projection of personal self-esteem issues#there's no way /this/ is the hill you're willing to die on with all the terrible takes about Arya from this fandom#wish people who didn't care about her would just stop bringing her up so we could have our discussions about her in peace

i feel like a lot of people who write astarion's character off and refuse to engage with his story and character arc are missing out on a very important aspect that is incredibly real and devastating in our world.
it's the existence of an imperfect victim.
which is an unfortunate reality for so many people. and that's why so many of us keep running into this cognitive dissonance where we can't connect the two.
in a way, through media, as well as real life examples, we're constantly being shown this image of a perfect victim, the target of suffering. often completely innocent, there to be tormented and to be weak and to suffer and cry. it's almost... palatable? they're there for us to feel one emotion or another. pity often being at the top of the list. they're at the bottom of the line when it comes to control, authority, aggression. they did nothing wrong. they're there to be brutalized, to fit a very particular role in the narrative. a passive role.
but more often than not, in real life, victims aren't these perfect, meek, quiet, passive figures. especially when it comes to sex trafficking (sex work being looked down by the society and the law surely creates a brutal trap where you're the 'bad guy' even when you ARE a victim). there's no escape. you learn to play by the rules of that world. for so many, there's no 'fairy-tale' ending where you're going to escape by remaining passive and hopeful and continuing to suffer.
there are so many cases where trafficked people end up committing crimes. for some it's just theft, battery, assault. but there are cases where the victims end up brutally murdering their abusers, or their 'clients', or both. and that's when society, as well the judicial system, stops seeing them as a victim altogether. as if they never were one. all of their absolutely horrific suffering gets pushed away, nullified in the eyes of the public. now they are the perpetrator, the criminal. and worst of all, some use this to justify their horrific abuse.
i can't even count how many times i've seen comments where people say 'well, they didn't have to kill them, they could've xyz' or 'why go out of their way to be so brutal?' etc. etc. which yet again... erases sympathy for the victim.
as if committing immoral acts somehow retroactively applies 'punishment' through previous abuse. and the mob's moral craving for 'justice' gets scratched. resolves the cognitive dissonance. it's much easier to connect the two dots, if the person was 'evil' all along. perhaps they were never a victim to begin with? perhaps they deserved it?
and that's where, to me, it loops back to astarion's story. and one of the key points portrayed.
no one deserves such horrific abuse. it doesn't matter if you're an asshole or if you're a sweet girl who had her trust exploited.
and it's not to say that a victim's crimes are suddenly justified because they were a victim to begin with, no.
it's more about our inability to tackle the nuance when someone is both. the one inflicting the suffering as well as receiving it. their 'crimes' are not justified by their suffering. yet, their suffering is also not justified by their 'crimes'.
it is certainly a difficult situation to navigate, but i wish some people would engage with those uncomfortable topics and step out of their comfort zone sometimes instead of writing something off because of some surface details.

who are your top ten favorite black clover and ships? talk about them! (welcome back to the fandom, always loved your art)
Iā€™m thinking you meant top 10 CHARACTERS and top 10 ships. Hereā€™s the characters for now! I have another ask for ships and since thatā€™s gonna take me a bit more time to really think about youā€™ll get those soon with that ask I promise!
My top 10:
1. Finral
Already talked about him in depth so Iā€™ll let everyone else shine here lol
Tumblr media
2. Magna
The manliest man. The actual best underdog character in Shonen. Like Tabata knew what he was doing during the Heart kingdom training arc. (Vague manga spoilers for spade arc) Having to work insanely hard to catch up to everyone when they can do something you canā€™t and finding a way to accomplish something no one else can do????? Thatā€™s such a real experience and heā€™s so admirable.
The literal best friend you could have in this world. Heā€™s so silly and supportive and awesome. Design wise one of my fav character designs ever heā€™s so sick. I should probably make a solo post about him too cuz I could go deep into his character.
Tumblr media
3. Rill
THE ARTISTā€™S BEST FRIEND!!!! I heart him so much and the approach to his upbringing was so beautiful. His destruction circling around a lack of direction and inspiration for his work is so insanely relatable. And just seeing him be so carefree and happy in battle creating art šŸ˜ I wanna be him.
Winner for the Clover Kingdomā€™s best laugh. Cutest character design he is so fluffy and pastel. I want to see more of his magic itā€™s made some of the best battle scenes in the show with just how much freedom there is with its imagery.
Heā€™s so baby I just love him. Also shout out to him for changing the squad name for azure deer from gray deer. I canā€™t remember if it was explicitly stated but I KNOW that he did that.
Tumblr media
4. Asta
The boy of the hour. Honorary spot at #1 because he is the one of the most successfully written Shonen protagonists of his archetype. Really love taking the going for the top motivation and giving a depth to it outside of personal ambition and having the concentration be on changing the world for the better. The purest soul.
Asta is so important. He not only motivates and inspires EVERY. SINGLE. CHARACTER. within the story. But also inspires so many people irl. Like i literally think ā€œwould this make Asta proudā€ when I do stuff sometimes JSJDHDDHHD and it motivates me to get through rough times.
Heā€™s a cutie patootie and he breaks all expectations for what characters would typically do when faced with conflicts like he is. He truly is one of a kind and brings out the best in everyone.
I absolutely love the aspect of his character where heā€™s literally everyoneā€™s lil brother. He just cares and trusts everyone on his team and fights for them SIMPLY because they are teammates no questions asked. Every time I rewatch the series I just admire the effect he has on their world and how it spreads one step at a time with each adventure. So many things wouldnā€™t have been possible without him being himself in situations and setting people straight in understanding their world. (This fact stands true even if not considering the anti magic as a factor. Itā€™s all him baby.)
Tumblr media
5. Langris
UGHHHHH I could write another essay but I shanā€™t. He is such a wonderfully complex character who has been so forcefully shaped into a figurehead of a group that represents strength, giving him such a terrible egotistical, yet self loathing view of himself. And despite all of it he genuinely wants to love and be loved outside of those factors. Heā€™s just a very confused kid who needs genuine support instead of ego-feeding elitist parents HDHDHDH.
Iā€™m very passionate about him. And I am SO PROUD of his character development through the story. Especially with his relationship with Finral. (I will for sure write a whole separate essay discussing them sometime soon). He was written so well both in his antagonistic position which in my eyes was very much mostly out of his control (not completely heā€™s not totally excused āœ‹šŸ»). Seeing him make genuine effort to change his outlook and behavior to rebuild a healthy sibling relationship, to support his brother and motivate him to improve himself as well, AND to remove himself from a position of high status when he knows heā€™s no longer the one suited for it really just proves how much he has grown. His complexity in his character just makes him so interesting and I want to see him and Finral team up more please I beg there was not enough. HAHSHSHS
Tumblr media
6. Luck
I always loved Luckā€™s story and the exploration on his ability to express his emotions as time goes on is so good. Like the elf battle always makes me SOB heā€™s so good. I genuinely am obsessed with his friendship with Magna they are the best duo ever. Heā€™s such a lil weirdo and his antics are just so perfectly lil brother energy to the rest of the squad. I will say Tabata had PEAK WRITING with his unwavering fear in battle that made the perfect set up for the seriousness of the Spade arc when they show him not wanting to fight ABSOLUTELY beautiful setup and reward right there. Heā€™s a baby boy who doesnā€™t need to be protected but I want to anyways.
Tumblr media
7. Klaus
OUR šŸ‘šŸ» KING šŸ‘šŸ» OF šŸ‘šŸ» CHARACTER šŸ‘šŸ» GROWTHšŸ‘šŸ»! Literally perfection how this man goes from prickly noble to Asta and Yunoā€™s number 1 fan. He has the perfect older brother energy and really became just an absolute sweetheart. I adore his support for Asta so much it always makes me laugh when they pan to him doing some weird stuff in hopes that it helps him out.
His magic is also so cool and damn I wish Tabata would give him some more badass spells because he could do SO MUCH. Give him a suit of magic armor mayhaps idk but itā€™s such a fun magic for him. Also design wise I love his hair and his features are just so pleasing. ESPECIALLY during the elf arc my god he looked like a model. I just think heā€™s very pretty HDHXHDHD. BUT YES an absolute king and deserves all the love.
Tumblr media
8. Mars
Oooooo we need more of him in the manga. I swear the coolest dudes are underutilized this man is so sick. I love Marsā€™ story and Iā€™m so glad that he reocurred in the story the way he did. He was really the perfect set up for the diamond kingdom being in the plot at all. But he himself. AN ABSOLUTE SWEETHEART heā€™s so good. He and Fana are precious together and I really admire his strength and commitment to his goals throughout his whole story. He had some of the coolest magic and I desperately need a Mars and Asta team up with their massive swords.
One of the best character designs from silhouette, outfit, colors and all. He is very handsome and just a cool dude overall. Yā€™all need to make more fan art of him I donā€™t see enough. Iā€™ll make some too I promise.
Tumblr media
9. Leopold
The king of not being in the story enough. For REAL he is so powerful and cool and heā€™s one of Astaā€™s rivals too I NEED a triple team up of him asta and yuno it would be FIRE absolute pun intended hehe
I love how straightforward he is, heā€™s so motivated and such a strong mage. I hope he gets to lead the crimson lions one day he absolutely deserves the position. He is the best friend of best friends. Being supportive of Asta from the start and being one of the least ā€œnobleā€ of all the other squads immediately solidified him as a favorite to me. And he just continued to kick butt and be a cool lad. His power is fun and I desperately wanna see him make full blown fire tornadoes NSHXHDH it would be SICK. but yeAH he is such an awesome character and a perfect rival and I think he deserves more screen time. I will for sure be drawing him again soon.
Tumblr media
10. Yami
Thatā€™s our DAD šŸ«µšŸ»
God I will say this with all the confidence in the world he is the BEST WRITTEN DANG TEAM LEADER in Shonen. Like Tabata really said let this silly goofy man rescue all of these outcasts and be their dad and help them grow and I cannot handle any moment from any character without thinking about Yamiā€™s influence. HE HAS DONE SO MUCH FOR EVERYONE.
The smartest idea ever translated from brain to paper was making this man a walking poop joke. LIKE INGENIOUS. I always find it funny and I always will. Make this absolute badass a true dad. He poop and he make bad joke. Honestly the funniest character.
His story from what Iā€™ve gotten to is so interesting. It was so worth the wait to get to see more about him but even so his story just in the clover kingdom is so wonderful. I love how he really sets up the themes Asta stands for before he even gets to the squad. Where all of the change in the kingdom that happens wouldnā€™t have been done without him (a foreigner) and his whole team of unloved and unwanted individuals who were seen as worthless. Literally showing the world how wrong they are. Yami is best dad and he always will be.
Tumblr media
Special shout out to William, Vanessa, and Gordon they deserve to be up here. Also David cuz I think heā€™s pretty and I love his magic but he is SO background character it hurts.
In the end I would have loved to talk about more of them but Itā€™s hard picking favorites with this show. Literally everyone is written so well and I love them.
Thank you for the ask sorry if i went on a tangent a couple times LOL

A ā€˜slurā€™ is a word used to demean or dehumanize a group of people. Typically, for a word to become a slur, it has been used systematically in hate speech against a marginalized group of people. Some communities may try and reclaim their slurs, as a way of taking control over their pasts or others may distance themselves from it. While there may be a cultural consensus on whether or not a slur is okay to use, it eventually comes down to personal opinion, and as long as you are a part of that marginalized community, you can use that word however you use.
For example (using my own words that I can say as an African American)
watermelon muncher: not a slur, but can be seen as derogatory
n****r: a slur
Alphabet Cult: not a slur, but can be seen as derogatory depending on the context
f****t: a slur
Thanks for coming to my TED talk, think that we all needed a reminder of this

Some thoughts on MelJay
I have a tendency to harshly disregard Jayce on this blog and to be honest, it is probably a somewhat immature reflection of the way I perceive Mel is treated by the fandom. But I'm genuinely relieved Mel is freed from her status as being lovers with Jayce and mainly from the label of "Jayce's lover", since he is equally her lover. She isn't a character made as an accessory to Jayce's arc.
Starting out as a non-fighter black woman at the centre of a fantasy action story like Arcane, Mel is in a unique but precarious position. We know she has a lot of impact on the "world" (Piltover, Zaun and now Noxus), but it is from the "evil" political side, rather than from a "cool" inventor or fighter angle like Jayce. Her close relationship with Jayce and by extension their romance, is a good tool to secure her in a position of importance for the viewers. Jayce is your archetypal main character, he is a himbo Iron Man, a white man with a strong physique and a brilliant mind. Nobody doubts his position and importance to the plot just from looking at him. Jayce working with Mel, liking Mel, should be a tool to make her similarly important, despite having the opposite traits of him. They specifically have moments of wholesome affection (Jayce cuddling into Mel's lap for comfort while she strokes his hair) to ensure their relationship comes off as a good one. This man is her white train ticket to main character station, complete with romance to drill into your head that you're supposed to root for her.
But people don't.
People don't root for her, because even if she has all this agenda of her own, even if she has a relationship helping set her up as an important, morally good-leaning character, people find it hard to see it because she just is the opposite of the archetypal main character.
And, fortunately, but to some detriment to Mel's reputation amongst the bulk of the fans, Arcane is not a show where characters are simple and where their relationships are simple. None of the relationships are purely good, they all have their ups and downs, as real relationships would. Even Jayce gets upset with Mel after she returns from the Black Rose. And it is Mel who approaches him with an open mind, forgiveness and basically allows him to take his anger out on her, because she is a kind and intelligent person, who perceives Jayce's words as coming from his own place of hurt, rather than genuine anger towards her. She allows him to come back from what he said very quickly, because she is mature and compassionate.
But because Mel is so close to an archetypal main character and because she is so different from him, this also creates tension in fans' perception of her, because she can easily feel like a "bad influence". Not because she is, but because she is different. She is not like what you're used to in your protagonist, so you may be prone to slot her into more antagonistic roles in your own head, because she feels foreign to the main character concept. So even though MelJay is good for her in a sense of taking the archetypal main character and pairing him with the opposite of one, creating a massive opportunity for black characters in media, it is also terrible for her, because when they're so close, people will pit her difference against Jayce's comfortable main character energy and will develop hostility towards her.
Jayce is both a benefit and a detriment to her character. He proves she is a type of character who can be good and important, but he still traps her in his proximity and highlights their difference. Plus, being a character with a longer history and more relevance to the main plot than her, Jayce has more developed relationships outside of Mel, such as Caitlin, Heimerdinger and, especially, Viktor. Mel's most important relationship outside of Jayce is her own mom. While Mel has a family member, Jayce has another dynamic that can lead to romantic interpretations. This creates all the tension with some JayVik shippers, who will see Mel as an obstacle to what they believe could be a gay relationship in a major piece of media. And, sorry to say, lesbians like CaitVi will always be the safer route for major projects related to media aimed at male demographics, since men are more afraid of homosexuality than women are. So by that metric, Arcane's quota on queer representation is filled and there isn't a need for them to cover another one. If they want to appeal to a larger audience, they might even perceive covering more than a single queer relationship to be a detriment to the success of their project. It shouldn't be but that's not what we're talking about. JayVik was never going to happen (at least not explicitly, I believe) and by that metric, Mel never stood in the way of anything. And if it did happen, as some wise people say, Jayce has two hands, no matter how much people try to make one of them more important than the other, both Mel and Viktor are important people in Jayce's life. It's not a competition. If it weren't for Mel, he would have never been able to work on his love project as much as he did, even if said project eventually turned out to be a shitstorm he nearly brewed to complete apocalyptic levels.
Anyway, MelJay was a relationship that had to end. Not necessarily in the way it did, but it served its purpose. Jayce was Mel's ticket to main characterhood despite her having none of the typical traits of a main character, and now that he has fulfilled his role, Mel has the chance to move on from the role she played next to him and expand upon the importance he allowed her to garner from a storytelling perspective by letting her "borrow" his main character energy.
At the end of Arcane, all of Mel's defining relationships are gone. Jayce and Viktor are gone, and her mother is dead. Mel now stands as a sole character with no active relationships to define her or take spotlight from her as an individual without ties to others. Mel has been losing and losing, and by the end of season 2, she's truly lost everything and now, with magic, has the opportunity to redefine herself. Her mother died and sentenced her to being the wolf, but Mel never was a character to do what others tell her or be what they want her to be. Now, free from the two biggest influences on her character arc, she is truly going to get an opportunity to be herself and hopefully also be the main character.

Isaac's encounter with Renee
Transcript:
Vincent: We'll look into the Sterling-Rico family for this scam. Let's win this case ok? Isaac: I will do my best. Why are you so eager to win this one anyway? Vincent: Felix is family really [smiles] he's my partner's grandad, so I don't want to mess up.
[Isaac was surprised to hear Vincent's relations to the Reichmanns and wanted to ask more] Renee: [runs up to them and jumps into Vincent's arms] Vince! Surprised to see me? Vincent: What are you doing in Evergreen Harbour? I thought you were heading to work this morning.
Renee: I know you've got Grandad's case and I'm actually free today! Thought I'd hop on the train here. [It was definitely awkward hearing them converse like he wasn't there. He wanted to interrupt, but it was also great to see Vincent be casual. Maybe he'll open up to him since he's seeing some of his personal life]
Vincent: Ahem Isaac, this is my girlfriend Renee. Isaac: It's a pleasure to meet you Renee [pauses for a split second] Reichmann. Renee: Likewise Isaac, I hope Vince is treating you well at work.

how do you help so many different kinds of people? i have noticed you know about lots of different things and meet lots of different people. i want to do that but i cant figure out how? /gen
A little bit of background is probably needed:
I have had people ask me this before, and honestly I had a little bit of a cheat code. While my life has been filled with a lot of trauma and bad shit, I was raised by a mother from an incredibly leftie family who walked the talk when it came to values and doing the work.
She had a lot of ideas imparted on us from a young age: social and community responsibility, ideas of collectivism, eduction. Even as a poor, trapped young mother, she was believed that many people behaved badly based on ignorance outside their very limited bubble, and that when life became difficult economically or socially, people would immediately point fingers at groups they knew little about or saw as distinctively different in order to have a blameable target.
From about 4-5, outside typical schoolwork, my mother also taught us about the world. This included different conflicts and genocides (which may sound horrific to some people, but basic information and explanation was given, and then it got more in depth with age), different countries and cultures (often she would randomly select a country from a world map, and we would spend a set amount of time learning everything we could about the place, culture, people, etc), different religions (I attended many different types of religious institutes at least once, and my mother often found people willing to talk about their belief system with us), volunteering, etc.
I have definitely had a head start and a lot more guidance than many people, which I am incredibly grateful for. It can also make it difficult to advise though.
Realistically:
Honestly, the two best things you can do if you donā€™t know where to start are: listen and learn. Find any local group, start participating and volunteering. Listen to the stories of people there. Ask questions. Expose yourself to all sorts of different ideas and opinions.
In the last year, Iā€™ve started doing a little throwback to my childhood. I have a schoolbook, and I choose random topics, and spend a few hours every week learning basic things about it. Choose a country, choose a place, a time in history, a religion, a culture, a people. You donā€™t have to be a scholar. You just have to expand your horizons.
As you get involved with more things, you will begin to narrow down your core values. This is good: you canā€™t do everything at once. I would say roughly 2-3 core issues or topics you care about is good (this doesnā€™t mean that you donā€™t care about things happening outside it - it just means you donā€™t spread yourself thin). Thereā€™s different things people make their focus: LGBTQ+ issues, BIPOC issues, environmental issues, homelessness, disability, refugee issues, etc. Your core focus will be the ones you feel most passionate about, which is good, because it means you will put in genuine work and care, and you will lower the risk of burning out fast and being of help to no one, including yourself.
You also have to get comfortable with the fact you will never be perfect. You will never be up to date with every idea and practice. There is always something you will need to learn or unlearn. Becoming rigid about being correct all the time will make you more of a menace than a help to any reputable movement or group. You might feel uncomfortable when you realise the gap or misunderstanding you had - thatā€™s normal. Be open to learning and expanding your understanding of things vs burying your head in the stand stubbornly. I say things and then months later I realise that actually, I donā€™t agree with that anymore, or my understanding has deepened, or changed, or pivoted. This tends to make people feel very bad or uncomfortable, but you have to get to the stage where again, you acknowledge that thatā€™s normal.

You do realize that since Lunar is doing this, he might lose Gemini-
OH YEAH NO SURE. ARE YOU KIDDING, THERE'S NO WAY HE WON'T TBH HDJSBDJD
See, despite my feverish love for Lumini and just Lunar and Gemini seperately as well, I wholeheartedly accept that this very well may be their divorce era!!!
I don't know how else to put it, but like. I've seen some people say that maybe Gemini will stay on Lunar's side and this may be a big rebellion moment, but Gemini has proven to be steadfast when it comes to their position in the council.
Gemini doesn't understand why Lunar has emotional outbursts to begin with, so why would they suddenly understand that Lunar felt sidelined and useless to them? Why would they understand why they've turned to someone else to feel important?
If Gemini does stray from their cushy seat in the council because they realize they care too deeply for them, I will be truly genuinely surprised!! But as it stands, I am expecting this to be a lovers-to-enemies situation LOL

THE LOST BOYS IS ONE OF MY FAVORITE MOVIES TOO OMG šŸ«¶šŸ«¶šŸ«¶ so happy to have found someone else šŸ˜šŸ™šŸ«£šŸ¤
Haha, same hat!! It's literally been my favorite movie since I was like...13 maybe.
Two fun facts about the lost boys to share. One, there is a lil lost boys reference in the last update, though it's small and only on certain routes. Two, my dream second IF that I think about sometimes is loosely lost boys inspired!!!
