the thing that i always find interesting about the menu is how slowik tries to instil into margot that they are the same. and i think, for him, he views it that they are both working class (working class in the sense of working for the state - working for other people, for the benefit of other people - as opposed to strictly lower class)

but the problem is, that’s a pretty broad demographic. yes, slowik has had his love for his craft ripped away from him, yes the critiques and such don’t care who he is (but rather what he can give), yes he’s absolutely had a decidedly demotivating time; but, that doesn’t make him the same as margot. and i think that’s fundamentally where he misunderstands her. because he can afford to have a private island, to have a big house and broad team of staff. margot is only on the island because she has to be, for her work. slowik has lost his purpose but he still has control. he cooks for other people, yes, but he still gets to decide the menu. margot doesn’t. margot is on a menu as predetermined by what someone else wants. a perfectly e respectable job as well, but it’s not the same as slowik’s

and i think this thinking from him highlights that despite everything, he does still have a level of privilege, to view what they do as being the same. because on a very arbitrary, general level, yes, they might be, but, slowik can’t see beyond that. that general line. he doesn’t understand there are things that set them apart. he’s fine with margot dying, even if she stands on the same side as him and his team, because in his eyes, it’s what they all deserve. it’s what has to happen to complete the menu. and maybe if he tells himself that margot is just like him, he doesn’t have to feel guilt for that

a lot of people call the menu an “eat the rich” film, and i think it can be interpreted as that; but the thing is, eating the rich is about “standing up to those in power, and holding them accountable on behalf of the less fortunate” [source]. if slowik wasn’t truly doing that, then surely he wouldn’t kill margot? because surely he is not benefiting the less fortunate “through killing those in power” if he kills the less fortunate as well?

he views margot as the same as him and all his chefs, and he views them as the “less fortunate”, so surely he should let all of them live and just kill the other customers if his goal is some act of making a stand. but the thing about slowik is this he seems to think in very broad terms - margot and i both do “working class” jobs therefore we are the same. these people have destroyed my art therefore all of us must die. this isn’t so much about retribution as it is him making a stand about his art, and the deaths of art

all of this is to say - i think that the menu has a lot of meat (excuse the pun) to it, and the best way to really unpack it is to first unpack slowik. his thought process is so interesting to me, because i thought there was some righteous logic to it at first, but i’ve started to realise that it is, just, a frantic man putting on a perfect menu

okay im gonna say a problem thats really been bagging at me. and its 'the angels are bad because they dont know what gets someone into heaven shtick'

but like... we do know? we know that you have to be a good person and not a douchbag (ik adams in heaven but im assuming that he was good at first and then turned evil although this is just an assumption)

like sir pentious was the least problematic out of the cast (that could go to heaven) and he did end up getting redeemed. so we know that you have to be a good person now do we know what qualifies as 'good'? no.

but actually counter argument, do we know what qualifies as bad? because if good and bad are opposites of each other then in order to be considered 'good' you just dont have to be bad. if its considered 'bad' not to steal then dont steal. if its considered 'bad' not to lie then dont lie.

does hell know what gets a demon down there? we dont know. all we know is that heaven doesnt know what qualifies someone as good. not to mention im pretty sure that they aren't in charge if whether or not a soul passes the pearly gates. im pretty sure thats some higher being.

point is that i dont see why it instantly makes heaven the 'bad guys' in the fact that they dont know what makes a soul able to enter heaven. especially the seraphims. its clear that theyre not in charge of who enters heaven so theyve had no reason to know that stuff. theyve had no reason to know why a soul passes the pearly gates. they never thought of redemption so why does that make them the bad guys (also before you go off its clear the emily never thought of it although she is willing to give it a try being more open minded). its a new idea that most likely might throw off the balance of heaven in some way so yes some people are scared to try it. it doesnt make them bad

i’ve been fixating on how peter’s mindset could evolve after nwh and it’s driving me insane because i can’t figure out how to word my thoughts so here are rlly random notes from my notes app.

peter who has developed the most outrageous trust issues while still maintaining a very.. weird moral / belief system / mindset (?)

peter who has lost complete trust in himself, he’s accepted that no matter how hard he tries he’ll always end up getting someone hurt OR hurting himself— he who knows that he’s trying to do the right thing but doesn’t trust that he’s actively doing it, he’s been manipulated before, what’s stopping that from happening again?

on the other hand, he sees the good in people and believes that everyone has the ability to do better in them, but he has no faith in people’s abilities to make the right decisions or do the right thing, how could ned and mj decide to stay associated with him when they don’t know how great life was without him?

peter who projects his self sacrificial tendencies onto other people, so what if ned and mj somehow knew how the twos lives would turn out without him? they still wouldn’t make the right choice— they would stay by his side and sacrifice the perfect life because of some moral obligation ( the same way may and ben did, the same way tony did. ) and how was that fair? they shouldn’t do something so damaging because it’s the “right thing”

but that doesn’t apply to him, he knows it’s hypocritical but atleast this way they don’t know he’s hurting them— if he chose to reintroduce himself imagine the pain they’d be going through?

he leans more and more into his own negative tendencies, he gets more reckless and makes decisions he knows aren’t good for him, he pours all of his energy into helping others because isn’t that what hero’s do?

he considers himself a threat and doesn’t trust that people coming into his life have good intentions, how does he know you’re real? what if you’re being manipulated— peter can’t be trusted around anyone, he’s going to get them hurt. he completely isolates himself because that way nobody he cares about can get hurt and he’s able to protect HIMSELF from others.

I'm always torn between wanting to say that John and Connor had to work together more than the game let's on and taking the game for its word and saying that they have only met a couple time sporadically. Both are deeply fascinating ideas to me.

Like I don't need to explain why them working together more often is compelling. They would just know each other better and the fact that John says he had only met Connor a few times despite him clearly admiring him is all a product of their fallout.

On the other hand, the idea that they had only met a few times here or there is also incredibly fascinating because that means John would have completely put Connor on a pedestal based on his assumptions and opinions without actually knowing the guy and just believing what everyone else said. Which is also so so so interesting because like why? Why would John need to do this? There's no reason to like admire or look up to Connor but he did! Also not to mention it makes the fact that he continuously defends him in St*nes Unt*rned just that much more "sad". Like this guy is just not willing to drop the "vision" he made of Connor.

on your way in, you notice some rats scurrying under the furniture (you seem to recall this apartment complex being strictly no pets, but you're willing to look the other way).

anyways, you know how these things play out... you're working along your fellow scamming repairman!kishibe when he tells you he's found another hole that needs patching... you go at it like those same rats, except you're not just ravaging the apartment, but each other's bodies <3

after a thorough inspection of the apartment, you're able to find a handful of other absolutely necessary (you and kishibe nearly destroying the whole apartment in your lust) repairs totaling over a thousand dollars each! fortunately, the roommate gives you the top-knotted tenant's billing information before you leave!
